Eds what playing position are Liverpool looking to strengthen in the summer I would highly appreciate an answer cheers {Ed002's Note - GK, CB, W.}

06 Mar 2013 23:03:11
Eds and reds is ince still ripping the championship apart, haven't heard much lately? {Ed001's Note - no, he had a few injury problems and Blackpool sunk in that time. The whole team is a bit of a shambles at the moment, so it will take time before his dad can put his stamp on it and then he might have a chance to get going again.}

06 Mar 2013 22:59:42
I hope Reina stays, he is still one of the best keepers in the world. Just my opinion, but there you go

U for real? he's had like 2 good games this season.

I think the problem is inconsistency has crept into his game. He was always reliable, making very few errors. Now, thanks to some errors sporadically over the last couple of seasons, people have interpreted the inconsistency as an overall dip in form.

Unfortunately, people remember the errors easier than the solid performances.

2nd most clean sheets in the PL as of gameweek 29. Whilst he's made some bad bad mistakes, he can't be doing THAT badly overall

07 Mar 2013 14:11:20
@2nd poster - Sure, 2 good games and then a somehow miraculous 9 other clean sheets behind a defense making mistakes because they are learning a new playing style. 11 clean sheets is the 2nd best record in the league during a bad season for Reina.

Reina hasn't been as good as he was since Rafa and specifically Ocho left but he is without doubt a top quality 'keeper.

06 Mar 2013 22:45:43
I don't know whether Rodgers is going to play more defensive against spurs because spurs are very quick on the counter so if we play deep and try and play our counter instead. If we are too high that's where they catch defences out.

Lucus mate keep bale in your pocket like you've done to everyone else and we will win!

I'd still put sturridge coutinho and suarez as front 3

Londonred

We play better when we play our game straight out. I hope we just go for it and play our best formation and just press them and push the attack on them.

We played them off the park earlier in the season and I still don't know how we lost that game.

And you don't mark players like Suarez and Bale. You cut out their service. It'll be down to who controls the midfield.

A big game from Lucas and Gerrard, with Lots of running and pressing from either Allen or Henderson beside them, Downing will play even more defensively than usual and his work and running will be key in limiting space for Bale. Good game from the FB's.

Looking forward to it, I think the lads will be up for this one.

Liking the idea of that front 3, never knew much about the Cout - but I like what I've seen.
Best form of defence is attack, attack, attack.
I also think take Bale and Lennon out and they could struggle.

AVB stated a few weeks ago, they are going out to attack and try to win every game home and away.
The way I view that is that we are Liverpool and at Anfield we fight fire with fire and attack relentlessly for the full 90 minutes and they will not live with it.

Eds, hope you're well.

Well, granted it's off a pretty poor source, I have seen a group saying, 'Liverpool are confirmed to be interested in Keisuke Honda. ' I have used the search function and although I've read you think we may have blown our chances a few years ago, do you know if it's true that we have CONFIRMED interest? I'd find it interesting signing him just after Coutinho. Could be a very threatening team to anyone in the BPL.

What do other reds think about Honda?

Thanks. {Ed001's Note - nothing confirmed, no. I hope we do get him though, I like him a lot as a player.}

I like the way Honda can move on to a ball and shoot equally as well with either foot. The game is so quick nowdays that the ability to do that is big plus and is something I feel that holds a player like Shelvey back as he has to work the ball onto his riight foot, often the chance is gone.
Honda does seem like a no-brainer signing if we could make it happen?

I have to say I cringe watching analysis on RTE. John Giles and Ray Houghton aren't too bad but how on earth has Eamon Dunphy got a job! There's around 400,000 people unemployed over here and half of those could easily do a better job than him! It's a good laugh watching him argue on the panel but seriously! He said Wanyama was a centre-back and he said Forrest was at fault for the first Celtic goal which was a bit harsh considering he wasn't even on the pitch! I know he played for Ireland and everything but seriously football analysis just isn't one of his strengths!
Cheers,
LS7.

Ya know Gus Johnson? An old college basketball commentator turned Fox Soccer's new shining addition? Afraid that's what I have to deal with in the states. Count your blessings.

Can't be worse then wilkins, his best quote was 'I always say if you beat the wall and the keeper during a free kick, you can score a goal'

Couldn't agree more, FL RedFish. He's absolutely awful. The top of the box is not the 'top of the key' and the other team is not doing a 'full court press'. Oh, and Eden Hazard is not a 'French international'.

American announcers are generally really bad when it comes to soccer, but he's a whole different level of terrible. I wish Fox Soccer would just bring back the English feed or whatever they were using before.

RDL you feel my pain, we hail from a long line of horrible and uninformed commentary here in the states. Fox Soccer Plus now has an option of watching replay matches with "non Gus Johnson" commentary. Perhaps my prayers have been answered.

Mate dunfy is brilliant to watch, a bit stupid at times but he is stubborn and sentimental, always worth a watch. By the way Wanyama did start center half, if not he was definitely playing there for the first goal.
dr

Yes dr that's what I'm saying I love watching him its just at times he does make you wonder how he ever got the job haha! I was in bits laughing last night on the analysis of the first goal! "Is that Forrest who gave the ball away Ray?" Then Ray Houghton says no I think its Hooper. Then Dunphy says "No, no I think its Forrest" haha! I was just pointing out he is supposed to be a professional and I could just picture people outside Ireland saying 'he gets paid for this?'. Its great watching him but I think he just has to do a little homework on players and their positions! Also I'm sure a certain Ed won't be happy with him calling them a club where players go only to be noticed by a bigger club which was wrong in my opinion.

Cheers,
LS7.

Ah man Dunphy is priceless him and Giles with Bill and when Souness was on was the best punditry you could have they were brilliant. Can't stand Houghton spews nothing but cliche after cliche and that Liam Brady is a smug old fat man, good player though.

With transfer window coming in July. Who do people see us signing? Big ask yeah so say 4-5 players.

(Centre half). S. De Vrij. Seems most likely to me in this area

(Goal keeper). One of young German keepers is most likely to me. Makes sense can give real competition to Reina.

(Midfielder). We would all love Eriksen but I don't see us getting him. Honda would be a good addition though.

(Striker). A. Sanchez. Really hope we can pull this one off (if true), excellent player.

If I had to pick five for them positions I'd be happy with the above.

Jonesred

You never quit Jonesred. I've got to admire your tenacity, always making countless lists of players you hope to sign. But seriously mate, why don't you try a different tact. Try a little banter, or even some talk on our current team.

Football matches are happening right now and constantly living your life for footballing life from one window to the next. Try appreciating the moment a little, it's a rough ride but an enjoyable one.

does anyone else think agger as a def-mid would be a good position change for him and us,

mickey b

I have to agree Mickey B, he likes to make those runs and have the odd shot now and again.

Don't think so, every time he'd have to turn quickly to chase someone back he'd pull something :-)

Fitzy

I like Dagger and he's a very good CB on his day, and a wonderful ball playing CB every day.

However, positioning is not one of his strengths and that is the A number 1 key attribute for a good CDM.

Plus a CDM is constantly in motion and needs exceptional stamina and concentration. There is a reason why good ones are hard to find.

Agger would not be a good CDM, I liked when Carra came on in that position for the last 10-15 minutes earlier in the season. The center back that I have seen do it best is Pepe.

The CB I've seen do best at CDM in the BPL is sideshow bob from Chelsea.

Hansen was the very best

He's too one footed, CDM has to be comfortable on his left or right side to be top class? in that postion. Jeez!
common sense!

i don't know what other fans think about coates, but I rate him and I believe he has not had a good run in the side to show off how good he is, I think getting rid off him would be a bad move a bit like tom ince, all coates needs is games and a loan move would be ideal for him he would get the game time he needs and also the experience aswell, and we won't have to spend millions on buying him back, like tom ince,

mickey b

Dont rate him. Lacks pace.

Chuck Norris

Loan spell for confidence I'd say.

So does many top centre halfs mr Norris. Do think he would do better out on lone with a club that likes to play football. Would be thinking Blackpool. They improved both Shelvey and ince in the short time spent there. Also don't moan about the prices they want us to pay to get there best players. What is Suarez worth to us.

I think he will grow into a fine centre half. Not quick enough to convert to a full back until then like Carra did and Kelly is doing, so he may leave LFC and one day people will look at him and say we let a great player go.

It looks like big teams need to buy experienced centre halves and goalies. You can get away with mistakes from young players in other positions, you won't in those 3 positions.

Fitzy

Lacks pace does he norris? I know a cb whos made a pretttttty decent career for himself, with no pace.
We all dream of a team of carraghers.

07 Mar 2013 10:52:22
2 strides and the guy is at half way! He will be quality player. He just needs more games at least to see if his not good enough, we let downing waste a position for a season and a bit, should've just thrown him in at the back, he's scored as many goals as downing has for Liverpool I think.

Agree with last poster, he's a big lad that needs game time to get up to speed.
People judging him too harshly.

He is a poorer and younger version of Per Mertesacker IMO.

Just a thought - which ex Liverpool players do you forget that ever played for us? Not necessarily because they weren't good enough - but just those names you hear every now and again and say "oh yeah, he used to play for Liverpool didn't he?".

A recent player I always forget is Fernando Morientes!

Red or no red card the sending off changed that game! It's about time man u got things go against them, we get it every other week in prem, I'm glad that's the way they went out with a red card that changed the game, welcome to are world, just for the record I hate any game that a player goes like that because I like to know we beat a team fair and square!! But that s the way it is unlucky but the way AF was when Jon Jo early in season! Stones, glass houses!

Providing the Mignolet rumours are true, I would imagine we would 'do a Chelsea' and loan him out for a few years until the time is right for him replace Pepe? Anyone's opinions on this? {Ed002's Note - Liverpool are not going to buy Mingolet in order to loan him out for a few years.}

Why not Ed? I predict we will pay an absurd amount of money for him and pay him a wage so high that when we loan him out, we will have to fund his wages whilst getting no return on our investment.

This comment would appear insane, if only it weren't for the Joe Cole and Andy Carroll fiasco's.

Ed02 is politely pointing out that Mignolet would only come as a number one, we'd only buy him as a number one and so all talk about loaning him out is irrelevant. He's been one of the best 4/5 goalies in the Prem. he's not a back-up.

06 Mar 2013 17:26:38
Hey eds I know this has probably been asked many times but do we have any interest in Alexis Sanchez

The big muus {Ed002's Note - Try the search function.}

06 Mar 2013 18:48:18
Hi ed's do u think the owners will again back the manager in the summer despite the recent losses. {Ed002's Note - Done to death.}

If we make 1million 1 year but we do not make 1 million the next year but break even this is looked at as 1 million loss. {Ed002's Note - A prime example of why finances should not be considered on these pages.}

To the eds- if I were you I would now accept that you are dealing with amoebae, throw my hands up, white flag in each and go look for the nearest funny farm.

You have my respect and sympathy for the proligeration of muppetry you have to deal with.

Mrpjd

06 Mar 2013 18:46:29
Hi ed's do you think the owners will look to change things around in terms of how the club is run, ie more senior footballing people at the helm on the club. {Ed002's Note - Done to death.}

06 Mar 2013 17:35:56
Hi Eds,
long time since last visit.

-Looks like Andy Carroll will be back to LFC. U think hw much Newcastle willing to pay for him? Is swap deal with Ben Arfa possible?

-Carra retired, Skrtel might go and also Coates. So we are searching for 2 CBs in the summer? Is BR serious in bringing Ash Williams to Lfc?

-is BR looking to bring right or left attacking winger in the summer?

-So Coates, Skrtel, Brad Jones, Pacheco. who else u think?

Kareem. {Ed002's Note - (1) I doubt it. (2) At least one, but perhaps the youngsters will get their chance. Perhaps 2. (3) I expect he is. (4) Try the search engine or read the posts please.}

Stoke might be an interesting option for Carroll. But not at 17m - I suspect they would be interested at around 12m.

Ben Arfa no chance. Cost too much and not reliable enough.

Defender wise I'm sure we will bid for Williams but I'm equally sure Swansea will demand a high fee for a 29 year old. Pearce would be a back-up option to Williams and De Vrij obviously another option (less likely if we got Williams I'd say). Gardos can play CB and DM so he could be an option if the scouting team have come back with glowing reports.

Any new GK far more likely to have Prem experience than not. Begovic, Vorm or Mignolet rather than a bunch of Germans no-one really knows anything about. We also have players that may interest Stoke, Swansea & Sunderland.

Ince the most likely winger - he's young, hungry and scores goals. In fact he scores at a rate that puts most of the foreign johnnies in the shade.

Most summer windows result in a maximum of about 5 incomings so this summer will probably look something like his.

If REINA leaves BEGOVIC or MIGNOLET for roughly same fees but lower wages
CARRAGHER squad place replaced by PEARCE on a free and lower wages
SKRTEL replaced by WILLIAMS or DE VRIJ with 3m or so net for further signings and lower wages for the new guy.
WILSON released and SPEARING sold and GARDOS in to cover COATES position should he go perm or on loan and the Romanian to provide DM back-up.
PACHECO to leave and INCE to arrive making it possible to consider a season-long loan for STERLING.
CARROLL to eventually go but not for 17m and a chance we could use this money for a more creative attacking midfielder who scores goals. I'd say if we have someone in mind and need to raise cash through sales to afford them we'd listen to offers for Downing, Shelvey or Henderson.

Best guess right now:

In - Mignolet, Williams, Pearce, Gardos, Ince & attacking midfielder dependent on sales
Out - Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Coates, Wilson, Spearing, Pacheco & Carroll

Personally I'd like Pepe to reclaim his best form and we keep him. I would also love Eriksen to be the attacking midfielder and don't see lack of CL as being a deal-breaker completely. He would play every week and surely the prospect of playing in a front six with Suarez, Gerrard, Coutinho, Lucas and Sturridge would appeal from a footballing point of view. From Ajax's point of view we could offer Assaidi as part of deal ( we pipped them to his signing) and Suso possibly on loan.

07 Mar 2013 09:26:50
Im a little worried at all this Pearce talk.
I've got nothing against the guy, but I am concerned as he is struggling to mantain a place in relegations candidates Reading.

Can we rely on a player who can't get into the Reading team?

Maybe at £2-3 million. Any more would be too much of a gamble.

06 Mar 2013 19:35:10
For an actual Liverpool discussion rather than adding to the oh so wonderful manc banter, line ups for Spurs? I'd go with a 4-4-1-1 with Suarez just behind Sturridge and Coutinho/Downing at LM/RM with Gerrard/Lucas as CM, same back 4 from Wigan.

To really march on to the end of season, beating spurs would be magnificent as they have been in tip top form. Wins in our remaining games could just secure 5th place or at the very least, above the bitters even in the season of their life.

I think we could potentially get overrun in the midfield with that but it's what I would probably go for too. I suppose you could put suarez or sturridge wide and drop coutinho into AM if we were struggling.

I think we will beat spurs with that front foursome and lucas and gerrard sitting inthe middle

I think Rodgers will play 3 CM's with Hendo/Allen alongside Lucas & StevieG.

Chuck Norris

Get over run in midfield with 5 in there what are you talking about. Then you talk about switching countinho in to the middle with Suarez or Sturridge going wide, switching players does not give you more in midfield you need to tweak the formation for that. We will start IMO 4411 Suarez playing the a, m/s, s as the game gets more open it will be a more 4231. But we might see at some point 433 with 2up and 1down the way Rodgers wants us to play.

I thank god that we are discussing the names above instead of some of the names we had just a few seasons ago.

Fitzy

I'd go 4-2-3-1, Lucas and Gerrard sitting with Downing, Coutinho, Suarez behind Sturridge

06 Mar 2013 18:34:07
Not a rumour more an observation. Is there a competition to link us with or enquire about players with the most obscure names?

Just wait until the end of the season and see what happens in the next window, don't fill the pages with the most ridiculous 'links' and names picked up from the Xbox or PS

It's not even until the end of the season that we should wait. It'll be 4 months, at least, until we actually sign someone. But the speculation is bloody endless.

06 Mar 2013 17:31:48
Do you know if Sturridge has gotten over his injury? Will he play on Sunday?

06 Mar 2013 17:13:21
Come on Reds,
Who actually cares about Utd or any other English team other than ourselves?
We are more interested in us winning
Utd fans are more interested in them winning
With the exception of the bitters who are more interested in us losing.
Remember that we are Liverpool FC and we do not lower ourselves to caring about other teams.

YNWA

. Because it was funny

Unfortunately we are not in position to judge. We were not in the Champions League, already knocked out of the Europa League and knocked out of the FA Cup by Oldham. Let me put it this way Zenit, Swansea and Oldham or Real Madrid and Chelsea? They are who have knocked both us and them out of the cups this season and Utd are still in the FA Cup.

06 Mar 2013 17:03:40
Spurs goal keeper Lloris said "Liverpool are playing maybe the best football in the Premier League at this moment, "

I would not disagree but spurs will be a good test.

I disagree it's probably spurs who are playing the best. We are right up there though.

06 Mar 2013 20:15:58
Nice to hear some praise for our beloved team for a change. Although many clubs are probably relishing in our bad form and lack of PL title for 20 something years, always nice to get good press.

Steve clarke

Liverpool are prob playing the best football in the league

then west brom beat us 2-0

pay no mind

06 Mar 2013 16:59:59
i believe with carra retiring and coates and skrtel likely leaving in the summer we will see the transition of martin kelly from right back to centre back, thoughts?
Mr Deeds

I think we will likely sign De Vrij in all honesty. I do also think Skrtle will stay one more season at least

Jonesred

Agree, said it ages ago. He is a CB.

Chuck Norris

Was around his age Carra moved in from the full back position. If it goes half as well as that transition we're in for something

06 Mar 2013 16:48:09
the cheek of that little mole sorry cole running down our club he said he did not have the heart playing for Liverpool he had his hand open for his big pay packet when it came plus he even told hazard to only join chelski little sh*t mick dublin

LOL like u ever had a chance with Hazard?
Chris the REDman

Suarez is 10 times better than hazard and we got him

Make Sense Please

Im not often glad to be rid of a player of ours but Cole was up there with Konchesky and Poulson for me. A total waste of funds.

06 Mar 2013 16:37:49
I'd be more interested in talking about if Spudz will play a high line against us on the weekend, whether we'll see Saurez, Sturridge and Coutinho all together in attack or SKrtels future as opposed to mentioning Nani, refs or opinions of other teams not making it to the 1/4 finals of a competition we won 5 times.

06 Mar 2013 15:51:13
Correct me if i'm wrong but I thought the terms of Andy Carroll's loan deal stipulate that West Ham had no choice other than to buy him for £17m if they stayed in the Premier League?

Harty

06 Mar 2013 19:39:19
IIRC, niether club confirmed the details so it's all press rumour.

They'd have been insane to agree a £17m deal irrespective of how he performs. I heard they have to pay if he plays more than a certain number of games, which with his injury, he may not make. That could be nonsense either though.

06 Mar 2013 15:59:14
Lowest price for a ticket for the game in Germany 13 euros! £10. with all transport included any where in the county, 19 euros! how much to go to the Emirates? £62? {Ed019's Note - Way too overpriced}

Makes you wonder if the governing bodies in football weren't so obsessed with making money themselves they might bring in a wage cap across the game and in turn clubs can lower ticket prices.

always a red

A one match ticket to the Emirats is the same price as a season ticket for the alienz arena

To see bayern or 1860 Munich? I have been to see 1860 three times in the last four years, the tickets for a second division game were over 20 euros every time!

Super G

06 Mar 2013 15:44:46
In which position do you think Liverpool are going to improve, I have thought about this and of course we are going to need a centre back but where else could we improve?

06 Mar 2013 18:23:15
CB - Top-notch replacement for Carra and a younger defender as well

GK - If we keep Reina, then a young 'keeper able to compete and keep him on his toes.

Winger/Inside Forward - Replacement for Downing possibly, young, technically good and fast.

DM - Cover for Lucas, but also good enough to give us bulk in the middle against the likes of Stoke. An older player possibly, with good discipline and leadership qualities.

And other than these possibilities, any good young quality addition to the academy ;)

I think that with Stevie and Lucas together in midfield, we have enough 'steel', but if one of the two is injured or rested we look a bit lightweight in the middle. No idea who we should get, but someone like your man from west ham (forget his name now - starts with a D!) would be a good shout, especially if he can be bought for a few million as is being said. It's good having all this flair, but we also need a couple of hard men here and there who are still good ball players.

We need to get better on the right side. Need more of a cutting edge there.

The Liver Bird

To be honest with a new cb I think our starting XI is pretty solid its our bench that needs improving

RF to replace Downing.
CB to replace Carra.
DM to backup Lucas.
GK if Reina leaves.

Chuck Norris

funny how united fell apart after the decision, refs in the leauge think united can walk on air not just sayin this as a Liverpool fan it is a fact, if they only got the same treatment as the rest the clubs in the premiership, WERE WOULD THEY BE, lfc dar

My own feeling is that if they would have spent more time organising themselves instead of ranting and raving ( the whole team and Alex F, you watch it. Giggs, Ferdinand, Alex f. Where's the leadership and calmness. ) they may have been able to keep the 1-0 lead. But, to be fair it was a big match and keeping your head whatever happens is essential.

My son has been offered a trial at Manchester United. He's delighted.

It's truly the bìggest day in any young referee's career.

I found this on facebook. lol

To be fair, they hardly fell apart, Real scored two beautiful goals. And they had great chances in the last 10 minutes.

It was just my observation for the first 10 minutes after the sending off I thought they lacked the compactness in the centre of the park. Mind you Utds strength is in attack.

06 Mar 2013 14:20:02
I still have a glimmer of hope that we can make the Top 4. It's unlikely and with only 10 games left we have no room for error, but with Chelsea and Arsenal not playing at the top of their game, I have a glimmer of hope we can do it. If we can beat Tottenham on Sunday and Chelsea both at Anfield I will have real hope. Arsenal are falling away slightly, there's not a whole lot of belief at Chelsea. 10 points isn't a huge margin in the Premier League but as I said with only 10 games left it is unlikely.
Here's hoping!
Cheers,
LS7.

Problem is mate, in the past 4-5 years you've needed about 70 points for 4th (ranged between 78 and 69 ish). If we win every single match from now until the end of the season, we're on 72. Doesn't look good.

Lets just win all 10 games and see what happens. :-)

06 Mar 2013 13:25:23
I think Nani's red card last night was borderline but I think he just about should have been sent off. In the Premier League, Everton vs West Ham, Cole and Gibson were sent off for similar challenges.
What was the difference between the two? Simply the fact that Nani went into it with excessive force. Regardless of whether he was looking at the ball or not, the rule clearly states that if a player goes in with excessive force and puts an opposition player at risk it should be sanctioned with a red card. So although many referees would probably let it go, the rule states it was dangerous play.

So just to clear it up, my initial thought was it was probably a yellow, but on second viewing Nani didn't exactly pull out of it and as the rule states, he did put the opposition player in danger, resulting in a sending off.

Cheers,
LS7.

They both had their reds over turned. plus theirs were worse, nani didn't see the player, those two did.

Nani didn't see the player? Get real please, Nani knew exactly what he was doing, including continuing with his kick when clearly he had already made contact. Why on earth would he fly into a challenge like that if there was supposedly no one near him? Why take such a huge lunge when there was supposedly no danger of him not getting the ball anyway?
He knew where the other player was. exactly.

It was a red, a straight red and as Roy Keane agreed, it was fully deserved. Get over it my no named friend

Tel 1949

If he did see the player then surely he is not in control, thus should not have foot so high. Thus Red Card

But Cole's and Gibson's red cards were ridiculous. Cole in particular was basically sent off for a high foot. Shouldn't use them as examples of good refereeing to be honest. Nani's was borderline, but considering he clearly didn't know the player was there and was only trying to control the ball, I'd think it very harsh if it happened to one of our players.

Anyone else think the way Manchester United and their whole team reacted after the match last night was disgraceful? Crowding the referee, clapping and shouting in his face, refusing to speak to the press etc etc. I understand it was a big game and they felt hard done by, but that happens to every team every so often. Just shows how little it ever happens to utd and how none of them can handle it. Rafael should have been red carded and Real a penalty anyway - Utd too prob should have had a penalty in last few mins.

Though I haven't seen much of the media mentioning any of this - surprise surprise.

Anyone else think it strange how much it meant to the team, all their reactions and mourinho's reaction? I know him and fergie are good friends and maybe i'm reading too much into it - BUT i'm wondering whether fergie will retire at the end of the season and mourinho is being lined up to replace him? Would explain why their whole team and fergie were so "distraught" after the game and mourinhos ass-kissing press conference.

Just to clear this up Red Ollie I never said the Cole and Gibson red cards were good refereeing. I'm saying everyone is saying that Gibson and Cole got red cards rescinded so it shouldn't be a red card but they are completely different situations. Nani jumped into the challenge, meaning he was reckless and was putting an opposition player in danger. Gibson and Cole got theirs rescinded because, as you said, it was only a high foot. The difference being Nani's was dangerous and if he didn't see the opposition player there, why did he feel the need to jump for the ball? He clearly seen him coming even if the footage shows him looking at the ball, which is only footage based on about 3 seconds of play.
As I said the rule is if you go into a challenge with excessive force, putting the opposition player in danger, it is deemed as dangerous foul play. This is the law so the referee wasn't in the wrong. As I said I didn't think it was a red card at first, but seeing it on the replay, the referee was only doing his job. It may be harsh yes, but it's the rule of the game.

Cheers,
LS7.

LS7

Nani had his eyes on the ball 100% of the time and was only looking to control the ball, not even kicking towards it. Would you honestly be OK with it if Suarez was sent off for the same offence?

HBadger

HBadger read my post! How many times do I have to say it? I said I thought it was a harsh sending off but by the rule it is a red card. Yes as you said I wouldn't be happy with Saurez being sent off, simply because he is a big player. By the way United losing Nani is like Liverpool losing someone like Shelvey, a fringe player. RTE just showed a brilliant view. Nani looked at Arbeloa before he even went for the ball. He proceeded to go into the challenge with 'excessive force endangering the opposition player'. By that alone he could have been sent off. I could also mention that he kicked out at Arbeloa towards the end of the challenge, but I don't know whether he did kick out or if it was just the movement of his leg, so I can't comment on that.

All I said was it was harsh but by the rules of the game it was a red card. No bias, no hatred, just fact! So read the post before making a comment please.

Cheers,
LS7.

LS7

You did say he deserved it because his action was 'wreckless'. That's where I disagree because to me it looked like a player looking to bring down the ball with his eyes only on the ball, not wreckless IMO. Also if that is wreckless and deserves a red then surely everytime we see an overhead kick attempt that connects with a defender it should be a red? Didn't Crouch knock someone unconcious with a bikey recently and not get punished? I seem to remember Demba Ba get his nose broken too with a 'wreckless' kick by Coloccini who was not red carded. With these 2 scenario's the ref has obviously taken 'intent' into account as well as 'wreckletvess'. I do accept in Europe refs can be a bit softer and sometimes decisions can go either way but that last night was a very harsh decision IMO. It wasn't a wreckless game in any way, IMO the challenge was far from wreckless and a yellow card would have been the sensible and correct decision.

hi don't slate me to much but I just looked at fixtures left for us spurs chelsea arsenal everton I really do believe if we carry on our recent form then 4th place isn't done yet chelsea have tough last 4 games but think they'll already of cemented 3rd by then anyway, everton think we will be above them anyway, spurs yes 12 points ahead of us now but will be 9 after sunday we then play southampton, villa west ham, reading, they have us sunday fulham, everton, chelsea, man city, arsenal don't have a bad run in but think they going through what we did earlier in season next 4 games we could be right back in it as we are looking much better and a bit of consitency is being shown let's hope strongest team each game pepe, agger, carra, johnson, enrique, gerrard, lucas,
coutinho, downing, sturridge, suarez,

If only it was that simple.

06 Mar 2013 12:59:42
Looking forward to the game against spurs, we need to carry on were we left off against wigan. Even though we played very good in the last game, still think we can raise our game further. Hope sturridge comes back into the team, as he'll give the spurs defenders even more to worry about, as will suarez, coutinho and Gerrard.

06 Mar 2013 12:56:51
Aubame-is at again, I think we should snap him as soon as possible. Surely worth more than downing. if we cld get him for sturridge money tho, that wld be awesome.

Hope we can work more Coutinho magic, anything like the January transfers and we are good. Great pace, trickery goals can play wing and forward. FYI-Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for those going who?

Go for him BR

I really can't believe all the talk about United, simply embarrassing. And some of you have the nerve to call Everton fans bitter, time to look in the mirror.

always a red

Always a red youv'e got some nerve to call us embarrassing. Utd fans get what's coming afterall they always spout on about how good they are, They're always on here giving it the big one claiming they'll win this that and the other. If the majority want to laugh at them when things go wrong then so be it afterall isn't it banter!

Is it banter though? Some of it sounds like the rambling of petulant children. Taking pleasure in others misery is bitter and embarrassing, yes United fans will do it to us but we need to be bigger and better than that.
Liverpool used to have the best fans in the world, having read this site for so long I don't think we can make that claim anymore.

always a red

Aw, come on, we need a bit of a laugh. Schmichael at the weekend said he could "sniff a treble in the air", aye Peter, it was the one you were drinking!

Where do you work if you do I use to work in a factory with man and Leeds fans by god I got some stick and they did of me and a couple of others they deserve everything they get soon as the whistle went I was texting like f**k to them cause they would have done the same to me.

06 Mar 2013 12:29:00
New slogans just updated in Facebook.

". when UTD wins. the referee is right.
when UTD loose. they are wrong. "

'When UTD loose' ha ha ha. very funny!

Was at the Library today and found a Biography entitled Sir Alex's United. Funny thing was it was in the same section as books on The European campaigns of Napolean and Hitler.

Napolean and Hitler were both stopped by Russia not Spain

Superb! Hoho

Napolean and hitler both conquered europe unlike ferguson

"Napolean and Hitler were both stopped by Russia not Spain"

How can someone disagree with the above factual statment?

Some strange folk out there!

Jayus BUCK is really growin on me he seen what us LFC fans saw and got rid of the DONKEY ass cole the cheek of him mister I run for 2minutes and I'm wrecked its early days but I think we have our proper number 10 WELL DONE BUCK, JON96

And the same Joe Cole has been saying crap how he didn't connect with the club and fans. How much did he cost us? Yet he opens his mouth to say nonsense about us. Ridiculous!

He didn't connect because the fans couldn't see anything in him worth getting excited about. poor, poor player

Few posts on nani red card and everyone has missed the point! Even roy keane was wrong in trying to justify it! He didn't get sent off for a high foot, there's no doubt in my mind he had his eyes on the ball to bring it down and if that was the case it would of been a yellow. the fact that on his way down he then kicked out is what got him the red. can't believe i'm the only one whos seen this!

You are not the only one that seen it mate, I did to and agree with you, it was that which got him sent off and it was the linesman not the referee. I actually texted 5 live this morning about the very same thing when they had the discussion about it. but in England we always expect an English team in the quarters of CL and very hard for the commentators and football pundits to accept defeat with grace.

Roy

I have been telling all the lads at work this. If you watch on the way down nani makes an unatural second movement with his leg.

You're not the only one.

When I saw it first at full speed, I thought yellow card at most.

Replay showed me that, although Nani initially had eyes on the ball, once contact became inevitable he pushed/kicked Arbeloa away with his studs, and then his play acting that he had been hurt in the challenge made up the Ref's mind.

I think if Nani had made *any* attempt to pull his leg back after contact was made and then got up and checked on Arbeloa, it would have been a yellow at most.

Yes I saw that too, he kinda kicked out, with studs out, while his boot was at its highest, the poor ref really had no other choice but to give a red card, yes it did change the course of the game, but to me it was football Karma at its very best.
redforever

I agree with you. I saw it too! Clear red card!
Grant.

I saw it son. RedTurk

Carragher Vs. Nani; Nani Vs. Arbeloa.

I posted the very same thing immediately after the game. Fully agree, he knew exactly what he was doing. Straight red, and deserved too

Tel 1949

Sorry but look again and that is the momentum of arbeloas arm taking his foot in that direction. Be afraid if lfc reach Europe next season.

Haha brilliant! Now
Arbeloas arm made nani kick out? It's impossible to suggest that unless he grabbed nanis foot and pulled it towards him!

Did I log onto the Man United page by mistake? Could have sworn this was a Liverpool page but you would never know it going by the last 24 hours worth of posts.

"Alonso is the controller of their team, " Ferguson told British television before the match, noting that Shinji Kagawa struggled to mark the Spanish midfielder in the first leg. "Danny Welbeck I think is the best at that on our team. "

A tribute to one of the best midfielder I consider in this generation.
Even the most successful manager in the history of english football admitt it.
Proud to be an alonso fan. once red. always Red.

just look back the second half. he was just like the king. controlling the game and he just was incrediblet o watch when he picks those pin point passes.

BR. now that's what you call as a XAVI. wether spanish or welsh.

Bring him back.
and he will bring us the title.

harry scousser
ynwa {Ed001's Note - he is nothing like Xavi, what are you talking about? They play a completely different style. Perhaps you are slightly confused by the fact his name is Xabi?}

06 Mar 2013 12:07:40
but ed. rest apart from that point is correct.
wether he plays different or not.
I meant to compare him with the quality of xavi.

like messi being a striker comapred to ronaldo being a winger. {Ed001's Note - whatever. Stop whining for one day please. Try supporting Allen, he is young and has potential.}

06 Mar 2013 12:30:39
sure ed. your call.

Allen has potential yes but he is not good enough for lfc, i'm sure the whole of next season will prove it. RedTurk

He didn't look that great in The first half when Welbeck and the Man United midfield marked him out the game he looked a lot better against 10 men big Hook!
Its Typical of some on here use another game with an ex Liverpool player in it to Slag off present players at the club

Lyndon

Actually thought until the sending off the tempo of play in the game passed xabi by. this was also reiterated by the commentary team during the game funnily enough.
love xabi for what he done in an lfc shirt but modric was the one that changed the game for madrid.
credit where credit is due, he may have been voted the worst buy in the spanish league but looked like luka had a point to prove. maybe on his way back to england in a Manchester United shirt while bale goes to madrid?
and finally, if xabi came back who'd pick him infront of gerrard in a 4-2-3-1 system right now? I know I wouldn't as xabi hasn't the legs and wouldn't have the assists either and he certainly couldn't do the donkey work that lucas does.
basically, time to let it go, like rafa, it's getting boring.

06 Mar 2013 11:17:14
So after doing absolutely nothing in a Liverpool shirt, and absolutely stealing a living, Joe Cole can't help but have a pop at us. well I'm delighted this leech is finally off our books, in coutinho we have a young hungry player with great potential, everything Joe isn't.

Cockney mate says it all! He forgets if he had of been decent we saved his career

06 Mar 2013 15:34:23
I bet u where happy when J. Cole first signed. He strugged at L'pool but he was class. He was like Mata at his prime. Dnt disrespect the man for speaking FACT. Coutinho still has a long way to go. If he hits a drop in form, you'll be here whining again.

06 Mar 2013 11:05:48
Someone needs to remind Nani not to watch Karate Kid before a big game ;)

Lay off Nani ok! At least he didn't roll around and then cry when he ran into a Madrid shadow. good lad. Save that for the games vs Pool ok? Haa!

Are Liverpool going to go in for Rooney if he's leaving? :P

Without a doubt Rooney who openly professes to hate LFc will join LFC in the summer and take a 70% pay cut to boot!

Nice to see three people got the joke.

Never ever. not good enough to get into our team next year.

06 Mar 2013 09:59:41
Oh god Mourinho, cut the nonsense, why don't you just drop to your knees and beg for the future United job.

06 Mar 2013 11:20:33
dude. let's be honest. that's the most inform on demand job right now as a manager.

Of course its a job that a lot of top mangers would want, but jeewizz have some dignity.

Let's be honest. that's the most inform on demand job right now as a manager
================================

Yeah but Mourinho have his head up Fergi rear side so high up its unbelievable.
His drama yesterday was ridiculous

You know before the match he gave an interview to MUTV where he basically came out and said 'I'm not joining united'?

06 Mar 2013 09:52:41
"I can only play for teams that I'm passionate about and I think that's what went wrong for me at Liverpool, " ESPN quotes Cole as saying. "I didn't feel a connection with the club or the place that I had at Chelsea and West Ham.

"When I joined, the guy interviewing me said 'you've joined the biggest club in the country' and reeled off the trophies they'd won. I just said 'yeah, if you put it like that, I suppose you're right' and Liverpool used that as the headline to the interview.

What the holly crap is Joe cole upto?.
this is an insult.

harry scousser

He went on to say "The dawning realization that I was playing for a club I didn't want to really played on my conscience to the point where I renounced my huge salary and tried my hardest anyway. "

Worst transfer by miles even at a free, that's ignoring the astronomical wages and signing on fee.

Your sense of humour left you?

You guys spend more time on here than your own side. so, so bitter! It's banter, if you don't like it, don't give it!

Says the guy who obviously doesn't support Liverpool but spends time reading through an LFC banter page.

06 Mar 2013 09:34:40
Allright, here's another bone of contention! Why do some fans on this site keep posting about fears of what if Arsenal gets taken over by Super rich Arabs or Man city/Chelsea now have a reserved right to Top 4 because they are owned by Sugar Daddys. Come On Guys!

1) How much do you reckon Chelsea/Man City have been consistent despite collecting superstars in their team?

2) Do you enjoy their brand of football?

3) Do you see cohesion in their team and players playing for the TEAM, FANS, CITY etc? No they are all just justifying their insane salaries and theirs more individuality than team work.

I personally want us to follow Borussia Dortmund model and I want them to win this years CL more than any other team. Love the fluidity in their play, excellent stadium, brilliant fans, fantastic city, young manager, home grown players etc.

Never want a Sugar Daddy for LFC.

Its a beautiful community, let it remain ONE!

We are heading in right direction. NORTH!

this is nonsense.
have u seen the game yesterday?. CL? night.
One CL game = 10 league games.
200 mill people officially watched the game yesterday.
Jose said in the interview The world will stop for 2 hours. and that's special.

top teams plays in top competition. not carling cup or mickey mosue cup.

CL nights at anfield was special very special.

its been 3 years dude. we haven't been in CL.
and its just CL that sperate sunderland and new castle from arsenal or other top euoropeon clubs.
not the style or wage structure.

just imgaine. luis suarez playing against messi.

Liverpool vs barca. or Liverpool vs milan.
or ronaldo vs gerrard.

Now we are going to be stuck with a 35 million pound bench warmer. Thanks a lot Kenny that signing was a joke. Allen is another expensive mistake 15 million plus 2.5 million signing on fee we will now have 55 million pound worth of crap on our bench. This season has been a failure every season we win nothing and don't get top 4 is a failure.

I am not sure about the other points.
but Liverpool finishing outside top 4 any seaosn. no matter of injury. deapth. wage. manager. player. is a faliure. simple as that.

06 Mar 2013 10:22:17
cant agree more.
top post. now poeple will start commenting. and disagreeing.
we have reduced wage. we hit the wood. we had injury.
since. cole already accepted Liverpool a failure we can see caroll too accepting immediatly after departure.

Good to see you support your players - an instant success sort of guy I suppose, who obviously knows his football - Carroll and Allen are most definitely not crap.

You're probably one of the ones moaning that we need him as a plan B, well you may well get your wish

Why are you worried OP? Andy carroll will not be a Liverpool player next season. He has absolutely no future here under BR. Oh by the way John B, strikers that can't score are crap!

Skip! .

06 Mar 2013 09:16:39
Is it just me or does anyone else think Arbeloa could have been killed last night by that kung fu kick to the stomach by Nani? Surely that red card was well deserved and I think Nani needs to learn some lessons from Carrager on how to get mean and rough without seeing red. And this is why the rest of the league should worship and hold us in high esteem. 5 CL trophys and I don't even see any team in EPL equalling this achievement in the next five years.

The good thing is we are getting back to our best and I'm most certain our summer dealings will be the launchpad to greatness once again. 5-0, 3-0, 4-0, 3-0, 5-2, 3-0, 4-0 and another 5-0 and only a strong team can boast of this result consistently. We have won 11 this season and 8 of these have been emphatic. Again, the ease with which we are doing it is also a testimony of what is to come. Now, imagine what will happen by the time we are made even stronger. My good Lord!

06 Mar 2013 08:46:10
Ed. I need you answer.
can u tell me the club which was fallen out of the CL. and came back inside immediatly in past 20 years. ?

harry scousser
ynwa {Ed001's Note - Bayern Munich.}

06 Mar 2013 10:02:57
thanks ed. I hope. Liverpool also comes in that list.
can you tell me how many years they were out of the Top4 and who dominated german football those periods?. {Ed001's Note - they weren't out of the top 4, at the time Germany only had 3 Champions League places and they finished 4th in 2007, so missing out on qualification. The following season they finished 1st and returned to the Champions League. The year they missed out, Stuttgart won, in 08-09 Wolfsburg won, Bayern winning again the following season. Dortmund have won the last 2 season in a row, so no clear dominating team until them.}

if I were the owner. I would have breaked all the wage structure and sign alonso. just watching him play in the second half.
he is the greatest living midfielder for me with gerrard.
he can change a game. his passing is the best in the world.
18 mill for allen. would have been enough to get the wages of alonso in our team.

Oh the beautiful irony of a referee crushing dreams! Welcome United, to what every other team in the Premiership faces week in week out when we have to play your 12.

As for Ferdinand's hand clap in the referees face, unbelievable! No class, no dignity.

United might be able to buy the League, different story in Europe against teams that spend as much if not more.

Nicky D

Turkish delights at Old Trafford. Now they know how it feels when decisions go against them.

Both feet off the ground, studs up, makes contact with the player. How can anyone argue that's not a red? If it was carragher or Shelvey against one of theirs they would have been howling for a red.

Erm carragher on nani?

Exactly my point. Even Carra was surprised to stay on, and the crowd were howling for a red.
Indeed, he might have got a red if it wasn't for Nani getting up / falling over and blubbing which made him look totally fake. Even Rooney was laughing at him.

06 Mar 2013 02:58:24
Not going to lie, feel a tad bit sympathetic for the mancs going out like that. Would have preferred an old fashioned hiding, but wanted Real to move on nonetheless. My only comment to any utd fan on the red: if that was our #7 in Nani's place at OT, would you be content with him only receiving a yellow? Or would you be screaming for a red.

No sympathy from me, they had had years of decisions going there way. Its time they had a bit of there own medicine - only disappointment is the lack of EPL teams left in the CL.

06 Mar 2013 08:32:33
yep. but nani did played a blinder. arbeloa was in his pocket. if he wason the pitch. madrid would have lost. by 2 goals.

No sympathy for me too. This is an arrogant, bullying, unpleasant club who have simply seen the other side of the coin for once due to a referee who did not become intimidated by the circumstances.

Ferguson was a disgrace last night his behaviour was unbelievable he rants and became abusive to the ref assistant he standing on side lines abusing ref he should be brought to task over his conduct this is a manager with great experience of european football and referees from europe did he think his behaviour would make the ref change his mind and let nani stay on the man is a disgrace to the EPL whom he and his team are representing in this competition when we had shelvey sent of against man u we did not have brendan abusing refs and linesmen and our sending off was not the right decison on the day but with out biase theirs was even their former captain kean saying it was a sending off the man has no class at all loosing is part of managment you have to except on the day the ball did not role your way and move on not him he even refused to come out and be interviewed he had to send his lacky who was equally as classless the best team won because they scored more goals weather it was with ten men or eleven because you can't say madrid would not of scored if nani had not been sent off they are a class act and how fitting it was their former star player who knocked them out all in all great result but poor poor display of managment by manchester united it show exactly what him and his team are a group of bullies

06 Mar 2013 02:27:40
sunday tottenham, I think we should go all out. we are a far better side when we have sturridge upfront but I don't like suarez out left! so I think rodgers will play suarez behind sturridge with downing right coutinho left. I hope he doesn't leave one of them out to try an contain tottenham with a third mid ie allen. or another idea is have wisdom come in at right back move johnson over to LB and have enrique as the third mid to man mark bale. enrique is the only one good an strong enough to bully bale.

just a thought! come on you reds!

06 Mar 2013 08:44:47

06 Mar 2013 00:50:22
I take it we all watched the game then?

Borussia Dortmund were amazing once again, what a player Goetze is/will be!

Jolly Red, I went to see them play at home in the league just before Christmas, they're a fantastic team with an amazing stadium, I recommend going over, amazing fans and such friendly banter.

Just before kick -off 80,000 of their fans started singing You'll Never Walk Alone, absolutely blew me away, (I'll post it up on Youtube to show everyone) I love Anfield more than anything but the atmosphere in the German League is absolutely fantastic

Considering everyone in their starting line up, baring one, cost under 4M I'd say it also goes to show that you can have a great side without breaking the bank. The one was Reus who was still a great deal at 13M.

RDL

German football is still primarily owned by the fans, and it really shows.

Well reading on here to tonight I have to say what a pathetic bottom
Feeding club we have become, some
Ludacris comments about the united game, why can't we just show credit where it is die even to our rivals? They have done to us in the past and try deserve it now,
They were hard done by and should've won, sickens me
But they will probably win the league whereas we will have nothing so not like we can actually gloat either. Don't be bitter, be a sensible respectful fan

Yes, let's all be respectful, the way Rio Ferdinand was to the referee at the end of the game.

Nothing wrong with a bit of banter when your greatest rivals get knocked out of a tournament, especially when only a couple of days ago their fans were claiming they were going to win the the treble.

As for the decision, look at the replay again on sly sports, why is Nani extending his leg straight into the players stomach at the last second. It was in no way a shocking or disgraceful sending off at all, haha, just ask former United legend Roy Keane.

It sickens you that we're celbrating a refereeing desicion go against United for once?!?!?!

You're either an undercover united fan or a WUM - either way, DO ONE!

Did you really want them to win another treble?! I know I didn't! It's bad enough that the whole league has gifted them the title this year when they haven't even played well most of the season!

Where were you when the same happened to JonJonJo

The original poster is absolutely a United Fan.

sensible respectful fan my arse.
