Went to the game last night but must have watched a different one to the majority of posters on here. Joe Allen is an excellent young footballer, and had a good game last night barring 2 or 3 missed place passes. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand that if he has got the ball 10 yards outside our area he is not going to be able to play a defence splitting pass everytime he gets the ball. If other players did as much running and moving into space off the ball as Allen does maybe he would be able to play more forward passes. He ALWAYS goes looking and is ALWAYS available to recieve the ball, unfortunately others dont give him the options that he gives them. Really can't understand anyone moaning about JA, really glad we bought him and in a season or two we will be holding Allen in the same regard as we hold Alonso . Three individual errors cost us last night, Johnson, Coates and Gerrard. We completely dominated the 1st half, they had the first 15mins of 2nd half and then we got back in the ascendancy and controlled the last quarter of the game. We still look we are missing a 'presence' upfront, but we are playing some really good stuff. Also thought Assaidi had a very good game, its been a long time since we had someone as direct as him. Ok, he tired alot 2nd half, but when his fitness gets upto speed he looks like he could be a bargain.

Agree wth every word Tommy. Good post.

Joe allen is a quality player, and im very happy with the way he's performed so far.

05 Oct 2012 22:33:57
I watched on ITV4 as well, glad someone saw the same thing as me!

KH

Well said Tommy, time is what Brendan and the owners need. We are playing FANTASTIC football mate, it's been a longtime since I've actually enjoyed watching Liverpool play good pass and move football, but we're doing it now, and we're doing it well. Allen is a great player, he'll be worth twice the amount we paid for him in 2 years. And your spot on about the volume of clowns we have coming on here venting complete bullsh1t... they simply haven't got a clue. IN RODGERS WE TRUST.

Stevie.

Well said Tommy , totally agree with your view of the game .
Spot on post ,

Rediculous mate! Wake up and look at the results

Think the negativity are from folk who never watched it, and probably never read about it even, they see the result and not the story of the game.

What are the odds of that? Jay Spearing says about seeing his old man who works in the tunnel. Pretty damn high Jay, pretty damn high ha ha.

If Steve Clarke was assistant we would still have a quality defence like last season then add a goalscorer perfect!!

I have been impressed with LFC play so far....but we can't rely on kids to soak up the pressure.
Experience and quality up front is everything....just look at 34 year old Di Natali and what a fool he made of the defence especially Carragher. Look at Van Persie for united. You need absolute quality upfront to help, support and cover Suarez.

05 Oct 2012 20:54:26
When Lucas is a crucial part of the midfield, you know times are bad! The kids look promising, Johnson should be on the wing and the best thing about us over the years was the defence. We need to sort it out ASAP. And all those who said Suarez won't be a 20 goal striker.... He's looking alright so far.

J Weezy

"When Lucas is a crucial part of the midfield you know times are bad." Whats that supposed to mean? The man who sits in front of the back four is the most important in any team eg; Yaya Toure, Roy Keane etc. Its one of the reasons he's the first name on the brazil team sheet.

Why the hell are times bad when Lucas is crucial? The guy has worked his arse off and has become one of the best defensive midfielders in the Prem. If he wasn't racked by injuries I could see him being the next captain. The guy bleeds Liverpool and covers all bases in a holding position to let the other midfielders push forward while he holds the fort at the back with the back line. I think people underestimate just how effective Lucas has been for us in the time he's been on the pitch recently.

Bozwollox...!

Personally I think the keeper is the first name on the team sheet, followed by the rightback then leftback etc. Reckon Lucas is about the 6th or 7th name on their to be honest.

Yah you know times are bad when one of the first names on the Brazil team sheet is your best holding mid.

Hi Eds and fellow reds I'm needing some info just to put you in the picture I own a B&B in Sunny Blackpool,as you can imagine I get some stick when they see my Liverpool signs around the hotel and as much as can take banter I can only give so much out as its my living don't get me wrong on numerous occasions I've felt like belting some. The usual go at me is Andy Carrol about why we paid out so much for him bla bla can you lot give me some ammo ie there flops now and in the past I'm going to print it and frame it and put it behind my bar so when the smart arse persons say something I can just turn around and point at the sign much appreciated.YNWA

How many trophies have Blackpool won?
They play in the Championship, we play in the PL.

Juan veron to united,28 million in 2002.

Read my post you tit I'm not a F*****G blackpool fan Christ almighty it's hard work on here, Eds you all need a medal.

Fernando Torres, 50 Mil in 2011.

I'm afraid even Veron at £28million who was a class player is not going to stop a little bit of wee coming out when you say the words "Andy Carroll £35 million" all in the same sentence.

Why are some fans on rodgers back..we were worse than this with a larger squad under kenny..now the man is trying to build a team for the future and people can't get behind him..all these talk of we have a lot of talented youngsters blah blah..they never had a sniff of first team under kenny only sterling had substitute appearances when those playing were terrible..I still wanted kenny to be given time but he's gone now.enough of all this borini and allen talk get behind the team even when we are terrible..for me being realistic we should aim for top6..buh as a fan I still dream of top4.

Have you analysed our results?
We weren't "worse than this" under Kenny. Maybe less passes, but more points and less conceded.

05 Oct 2012 19:47:48
Arsene Wenger had a team of invincibles, most of his defenders couldn't pass wind. As that team broke up, Wenger employed a brand of fast-paced pass and move football which is a joy to behold. Indeed Arsenal have been by far the best footballing side since.
Yet, they are potless. They've won nothing but admiration for 7 seasons and counting.
Swansea had a decent season last season. Sure they lost more matches than they drew or won and they had a negative goal difference, but ignoring results, they played nice football. They achieved it during first season syndrome. No-one knew what to expect and they got a shock.
Now everyone knows Rodger's tactics, they've been countering Wenger for 7 seasons do they know what to do.
What makes Rodgers think he can do better than Wenger?
Personally, I'm not very optimistic he can. We're a poor man's Arsenal. {Ed001's Note - you might want to learn what you are on about before talking about it. Arsenal's invincible team was based on Kolo Toure, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole and Lauren, all 4 were picked for their ability to keep the ball and not just lump it up field.}

05 Oct 2012 19:46:28
The stats do show that apart from 2 other prem league clubs (and not much in it) we are the easiest club to score goals against....how is this the Liverpool Way.
Some of the banter written here baffles me. Yes its great to see youngster comin through, but comments like 'we have been brilliant' when results (which is the true measure) have been unacceptable and poor. All this bad luck talk is crap. Shanks, Paisley, KK,GH,RB never talk of bad luck.

We need Lucas back, when he got injured last year we started to leak goals.

MIKEY

Bizarre post. Comparing fans with managers.

Kk never talked of bad luch?

In his penultimate season houllier bemoaned his sides bad luck
Paisley's genius

Rafa moaned about bad luck. Plus he was convinced that Ferguson could use Jedi mind-control powers on him.

05 Oct 2012 19:28:22
So you "people" want to get rid of BR already. Once again the "Liverpool fans" want to get rid of a manager. You're making us turn into Chelsea. All your job is is to support the team or criticise if necessary, it isn't trying to force out a manager every 2 months. Stop this stupid immature behaviour. A manager or a teams season shouldn't be judged on a few months, it should be a season or more! Give them the chance to show what we can do. Brendan's philosophy requires TIME TO PERFECT. Yes, the results aren't coming now because the players are getting used to it but you can see week by week that we ARE improving. Just imagine what we will be like in 2 or 3 years time when Sterling, Suso, Wisdom, Robinson, Ibe, Sinclair etc. are in their 19's or 20's. They will be world class and they will have already had the experience which means they'll be at the top level. Just give Rodgers TIME TO PERFECT.

BthekingB

Don't talk nonsense the liverpool fans do not want rid of Rodgers.

05 Oct 2012 19:13:48
For me, Rodgers hasn't worked out how his possession based football copes with the quick counter-attack which is rife in English football but not so in La Liga.
Our defenders are really struggling to get to grips with the "system" and style of play.
My mind goes back to the England v Spain recent friendly which Spain absolutely totally dominated and lost 1-0.

Secondly, Reina has lost it, much like Dudek did.
A keeper is like a boxer, once they lose the self confidence, they're shot. Get rid in Jan please.

Pepe made probably the best save of the season last night and was not at fault for the other 2. What a person what a supporter.

Evered

Last transfer window there was talk of cashing in on Agger. I reckon the best player to cash in on at the moment would be Reina. Past his best for me but still highly rated by many so could command a good sale price.
Patiently I wait for Gulasci xD

H you person that friendly dosent matter, in the last 4 years spain have won 2 european championships and 1 world cup , what have england won in the last 4 decades? NOTHING

Dudek - First season with new Manager - different defensive set-up.

Riena - First season with new Manager - different defensive set-up.

Go figure -

Riena has also lost a big part of his game as he could hit wingers and strikers over the top and have commentators and pundits wax lyrically about his "distribution of the ball" now that is out of his game it is all about shot stopping and command of his box. I still believe he's in the top 5 shot stoppers in the world - he's just been out of sorts. That save from the header on Thursday was nothing short of Banks/Schmichael quality.

So Blair in your opinion we don't need striker. Borini is perfect to lead our line. Blair be honest if we had striker like persie or torres etc where would we be sitting in the table. I think united place and united would be sitting our place
-------------------------------------
If we had RVP mate we would be a lot higher than we are (who wouldn't). But we haven't got RVP and I don't want Torres back. He's not even half the player he was and you would take him back?

I would rather stick with Borini, give the kid a chance.....

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Blair I agree with you mate I really like Borini and believe all he needs is a tap in, then the goals will come my only concern is I think he needs more service in the box but I really like this kid.

Mighty reds

05 Oct 2012 20:42:17
Nope Blair I won't take torres back i was trying to say we need torres mould striker.

A lot of people also overlooking Borini has been the key to opening up defences for other players to score. His runs and positioning have been drawing defenders one way or the other to open gaps for others to score. A stat which is never recorded but still extremely useful in open play. He has also been moved out left to accomodate Suarez in the middle. How long did Carroll take to score 10 goals again? I suspect a goal return will come sooner for Borini than it did from Carroll.

Huws

We need a striker in the mould of Torres? Have you seen Torres playing lately? Its obvious, we need another striker. If Borini starts banging them in, we still need another striker. I like the look of Yesil and would bring Ngoo into the 1st team squad for Europa League. I think he deserves it, he's been very impressive so far this season.

BUT, we can moan or criticise until we are blue in the face. The reality is, we have to use what we have now. We can't change anything until January, so get behind the players we have. Then address the striker problem in January.

Would be a lot less stressful, for all of us.

I'm rarely critical of players and this post isn't going to be overly critical. But for the first time last night I can see the frustration with Allen and more importantly BR's system.

Now I know it's Allen's job to keep thing's ticking, keep it simple, press when required and be available at all times. However a little positive thinking wouldn't go a miss. Now I'm sure that'll come with time and perhaps the return of Lucas, but I hope it comes soon. Everyone remembers Alonso for his range of passing, but where he really excelled was that sharp through ball, usually to Gerrard who in turn fed Torres often resulting in a chance/goal. Allen has the ability to thread those balls and perhaps that change in pace will keep teams on their toes rather than just predicting the open counter attack that we're so open too.

Keeping the ball for 75% of the game would normally tire opponents, but we rarely force weaknesses on anyone other then ourselves. We don't make use of the space we're creating and it's so frustrating. Now those of you that have read my posts will know I'm a big fan of BR. I just want to see a little urgency in our game. A little shift in pace and us playing higher up the pitch a little, as right now our defence is so exposed its scary.

Also I just wanted to chip in on the Borini talk. His runs are truly brilliant, he works the channels, pulls centre backs all over the place and to me will make a very good addition to the squad over the next few months/years. He for me is a good replacement to Kuyt, who I for on think was and is a top class player. I can see why (not that I agree) some are saying he's not a fox in the box etc, but frankly how can he be when the ball never gets into the box. He honestly didn't have a sniff last night, but managed for 50-60 minutes to work three good centre backs very hard and almost fashioned a couple of chances out of nothing. He has Downing who for a winger rarely crosses, Jonjo who rarely passes and Assaidi who doesn't really know what he's going to do until it happens in support. that for any striker makes it a hard task to predict anything. If he'd had Sahin, Suso and Gerrard playing behind him, then he'd expect a little more regular service not complete unpredictability and his runs wouldn't have been ingnored.

Those expecting him to show individual Suarez brilliance need to accept that won't happen anytime soon. He's a striker, a poacher and a runner. He's not a trickster or a little magician, but then not many in world football possess the skill to nutmeg a mermaid like Suarez. BR knows he wasn't brought to be that man, he was brought for the squad to give balance and drive and I for one am delighted he's with us.

Stoke is always a big test, but I'm confident as always (false or otherwise) that we'll win. But what I really want to see is some grit to go with our finess. Personally I'd like Henderson and Coates to get a shot over Skrtel and Allen/Sahin. Both just seem a little sharper and more keen to force the issue, which you need against Stoke.

Fingers crossed for the weekend.

Papa G

The John Terry Case;

Little help needed, can anyone find if the FA used a similar phrase after Luis's ban than the one issued today?

The one I'm referring to is the "We do not think he is a racist" line - did Luis get a similar caveat? {Ed001's Note - yes, from both Evra and the FA.}

Ahoy - here are 4 statement 3 of them are 100% true 1 of them is false.

1. I recently poked a frog with a stick.

2. I am currently much more positive than I have been for a number of years with the structure of LFC, from owners, management staff, playing staff, academy development, and general PR of the club. I have a very strong feeling that we have turned a corner and are currently at the start of something special, that will over time prove to be a re-emergence of our great club. Success is not guaranteed but is earned on a number of levels. We stand at the beginning of exciting times.

3. Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart) from Home & Away told me to F*** Off for repeatedly shouting "Pull your head in Ailsa" whislt he enjoyed a quiet family meal.

4. I share my birthday with Bradley from S Club 7.

Which is false ???

It's got to be the first one, because I reckon what you poked the frog with, rhymes with stick.

2.. pretty obvious given our recent performances.

Ahoy - I can confirm I share my birthday with Jon from S - Club and not Bradley.

I'm glad I don't share it with Jo O'Meara from S-Club as she would have got a 4 match ban and £220,000 fine from the FA when she was on Celeb Big Brother

Noticed a slight difference in our play last night, previously our back line (barring Enrique who just played his own game) have always tried to pass out of defence regardless of the passage of play. Last night defenders "cleared long" when there were a large number of the opposition in our half (mainly after corners or throw-ins in the final third).

I preferred it as it was infuriating me watching sideways passes across the back in transition (i.e. just regained posession and still being pressed by opponents forwards).

Any thoughts/comments on this change (or if I imagined it)?

KH

So the result didn't go our way! Not the end of the day, in all fairness Udinese should be the only team that gives us a test in the group (fingers crossed).

I know we lost the game but can we stop the calling for everyone's head?! If you really think you can make better decisions than Rodgers then go support Ebbsfleet United and make some decisions! (their fans own the club yeah?)

Seriously, we need to lay off Borini. He's 21. He's a good footballer, he's clever he just isn't scoring. I like that some fans on here don't throw fits when Shelvey doesn't score every game or get an assist! I like that people seem to turn a blind eye if we let in goals when Kelly is playing! They are the same age the difference is that Borini is italian and the other lads have played their entire career in england!

Some things however do need changing. It seems to me (and a lot of others) that Carragher just isn't up to the task at the moment. His pace is an issue but leave the lad alone! He will throw himself in front of a train for Liverpool and it's not like he is as bad as TITUS BRAMBLE!

The football is better than it's been under the last 2 managers and the team seems happier. Our key players all seem happy and are signing new contracts. Goals will come, just get behind the team or eff off!

I think we need a DM to help protect our back four.I know were a work in progress but the amount of goals were conceding is a major problem. With lucas suffering long term injury problems,i think the manager should sign a DM in january.Maybe we should think about bringing in a new coach, who can help our defence on a few things.

Lucas will be back and healthy by November. His injuries were separate incidents, not reoccurring

Would still like to see another DM brought in,incase lucas gets injured again,or just for general competition.

On a side note to the game last night I would like to thank the udinese fans. They were very respectful and were not jeering us for losing and they clapped our fans and shook hands. Very different than the napoli fans. They clapped our subs and goals and were loud and entertaining.. I wish more sets of fans were like this.

The amount of people that have ever played football on this site is very small, judging by the way u criticise players at every turn, its one thing to complain about a night gone bad , but to keep nicking at our players really shows how much of that mushy stuff in ur head is actually a brain.
Playing tika taka is very different from what we were playing last season. Skrtel and Agger were a wall last season, but this season no, why tho ?

Well its simply due to the movement that CBs have to do during a game, they push high forward and out of position, our full backs are even higher up. When ever a team plays tika taka it will and always be valnurable to high through balls that are played over the CB , and if ur playing against a team with a very fast forward , its even worse .
To prove this remember the games Barcelona lost to Inter , Madrid and Recently Chelsea, these three teams scored with balls passed over the top and the CB just couldnt keep up with the forwards. So until we get very pacy cb or cb that read a game like DMF , who cut inn passes were gona keep letting them in .
But remember this , we are Liverpool . And this league title will be restored to its rightful place with BR in charge.

Agger reads the game excellent.

Anyone who comes on here and slags him has a sort memory, ok he`s not got the legs he had , but give him some respect, he`s still brilliant. Before i get slagged for not going to games, i bet i`ve seen us win a lot more trophies than most.

Seen them win more trophies than most? You must be getting on a bit fella ;)

TK-Red

No one can take away what Gerrard has done for the club over the years but its not his commitment thats in question, age catches up with all players in the end regardless of what they have done in the past. He has had spells out of the team in the past through injuries and such like and one thing I always notice when this happens is it gives other players a chance to step up and take centre stage. The team will move on with or without him, all that people don't want is sentiment becoming a reason to start carrying him on the pitch.

Adding on to the Gerrard/Shelvey/Henderson debate which came about due to the Gerrard/Henderson substitution last night......I have come to the conclusion that Gerrard should be playing up front!

Leave Lucas/Allen/Henderson/Sahin/Shelvey/Suso for the midfield positions.

I do like Borini. His movement and runs are top class, however he is finding goals hard to come by. Imo, Gerrard and Borini should be in rotation for the position up front.

I would love us to buy a striker in Jan, but in reality it is going to be very very difficult to do!

So, I say for the front 3 have......Suarez/Gerrard/Sterling/Borini/Assaldi/Morgan

I would love to hear the opinions of the Eds and fellow Reds

K.Bennett

Morgan isnt getting a look in. I assume Rodgers might not rate him that highly? I mean if a young £1 million German forward can sign and start a game what does that say to Morgan?

22 goals (approx) conceded in all competitions this season, 3 home defeats on the trot, incompetant transfer policy.....everyone saying what good footie we are playin....
Have or are we just being blinded by all the talk?

Its the emperors new clothes mate have been sayin it for ages here about Rodgers

We are falling for his lies in our eyes

Look mate. I've criticized the team the last few years, firstly because we didn't really played good football, our unwillingness to pay extra money and our stupid transfers(paid much more of the worth of the players last year).
This year I'm really amazed at the speed of how Rogders changed the team. We didn't really looked solid team at the beginning of this season, far from it. Yet we are playing better football than most of the teams in the PL.
Firstly Rodgers changed our hopeless midfield(last season) to a rock solid midfield. Secondly he changed our hopeless wings(last season) to dangerous wings. Thirdly our hopeless attack this season is starting to look like a goal machine.
The only vulnerable point, which seemed our strongest is the defense. And I believe given time, because we have world class players at the back, Rodgers will make the defense solid.
Yes we play wonderful football, in fact except against Arsenal all the other games we dominated with pretty football.
We need to realize its a change of manager, new ideas, young players are coming through and this will take time to become solid.
Even if Rodgers didn't prove anything yet, I strongly see he is the man to make us giants again. I'm really amazed at how rapidly he is forcing his ideas into the team.

Blinded by the great football mate.
Have a little faith, have you even been watching the games or just looking at stats?

I used to be very negative about results and blamed everything on our performences under our last 2 managers, and I think my negatives were justified.

But last night (And so far this season) our performences have been brilliant (Bar Arsenal/West Brom).

How Udinese scored 3 still baffles me. They had around 5 shots and we around 15.

We dominated every aspect of the game, yet we lost.

Under our 2 previous managers people would scream "It's bad luck, It's bad luck", and i'd say "Stop chatting bulls**t, it's our performence and mentality".

I was correct!

Because now our performences are great and so is our attacking mentality.

Now I can't blame the manager.

It REALLY IS bad luck!

I'm not so negative anymore, and i'm not even disappointed about the Udinese result, because the performance we gave last night pleased me more than the result, and if we continue like that then we're in the CL!!

Change you're attitude and give the Irish man a chance to prove his worth.

Why do some lfc fans talk like they are 5yrs of age..can't you dumb folks see allen is playing out of position.judge him when him and lucas play together..and just leave borini alone he is 21 and scored 9goals in serie A before he got here...why are fans complaining like he was world class b4 he came..rodgers even said it that he brought him to backup suarez..but due to lack of depth he plays him out wide..which am against..I still despise rodgers for loaning carroll,on top of the tiki taka rubbish he talks about we still put in a lot of crosses every game..stoke would be tough those guys just sit back and play on the break..hope we get a win..YNWA. Bossman

So we bought another non versatile footballer in allen can only play one position?

Stevie has played 8 different positions for LFC and he's slated my god the madness

I don't know what the moaners slagging off JA are looking at.
If you actually watch the game, he makes himself available for every player that has the ball.
He is always on the move, creating space, passing to a teammate.
All this and he is playing slightly out of position, in a new team, at a new club and he is still so young.
I swear some people wouldn't know a decent player if he jumped up and bit them on the a**.
Maybe it's because we didn't buy him from a club in Europe or didn't spend £30m+ for him.
Watch him receive the ball. He is already turning into the space and if he is closed down, he gets out of trouble with ease.
he is a joy to watch and is becoming my favourite player (although Suso is steaming up the outside for that accolade).

Errr..even my five year old could spot that a player who cost £12-15m should be able to cope with a wee bit of pressure of positional change. Maybe even attack and pass forward now and again.

As for Borini only being 21, WTF did the coach think he was doing by offering £12m. He is starting to make AC look like value for money. Even AC could be a game changer or a winner. I still count the header againstthe Blue as a winner in the FA cup final.

Remember then, when the team got to finals? {Ed001's Note - by the sounds of it, your 5 year old would have a better idea of football than the nonsense you have been posting recently.}

You still get crosses in tiki taka they are just shorter and more accurate rather than lumps.
Like the one we scored from the other day.

2nd poster. Don't be silly. That's NOT what the first poster said.

Players have preferred positions. That's where they play best. It doesn't mean that they can't play in a different position. However, chances are, they're better in their preferred position.

Carra should be nowhere near the first team anymore other than couching, and steven gerrard needs a hard dose of reality, lose the ball, fight for it back, sorry for jordan henderson, played well, team went to bits when gerrard was added, forget were they are born, there not cutting it know more...

I'd love to see how JC gets on with couching. Maybe DFS or Harveys have a vacancy he can fill.

Just think before you slag CARRA of and what he's done for LFC please.

Legends they maybe - if they're not performing every week, out of the team they need to be.
This isn't slagging them off -just plain FACT

Just think before you slag CARRA of and what he's done for LFC please.
You left out in the last 5 years

Yeah.. Carra sure does love his couching

I have said before:
You can never take away what these players have done for the club and what they have done will always be held in the highest regard amongst the true fans.
I just hope that sentiment does not become a reason to carry them on the pitch. Carra already taking a back seat role now I just wonder if the england captaincy is in Gerrards mind? He has waited so long for it I think its possible he may try and cling onto his playing days longer than is really acceptable for the good of the team...

Hi guys, watched you last night and didn't really think you deserved to lose, you definately have to remember you are a work in progress and i'm sure you'll have more days/nights like last night for a while longer. I know you all love KK, he did spend a lot of money whilst there trying to build a winning team, I know it didn't work. I cant imagine potentially how good you could be if BR had that kind of dough to spend. We've been 7 years with nought and i'm still hanging in there and like I said before hoping this is our year. Stick with BR and it aint gonna be long for you boys either. Love the way your playing.

Agree with you 5GS.

But although Allen is great, he does deserve a little criticism for his side to side passing, and not playing "Alonso-esgue" killer passes.

But he's young and (hopefully) he will learn from the best.

I tHinkle BR is fantastic the way he has us playing is excellent the only 2 criticisms are

I think sometimes we over pass and out build up play is to slow allowing teams to get players back and flood us then hit with good counter attack as our defence is to far up the pitch trying to support midfield as they try to keep the ball.

Defensively we aren't as tight as we should be.. leaking goals. like Brendan said last night we shouldn't have to score three or 4 goals in order to win a game!

Love watching us play at the moment tho... it is pretty beautiful.

It will take time. But the future is more promising than it has been for many years

05 Oct 2012 15:22:55
For 70 minutes last night we played some good stuff. Lack of concentration at the start of the 2nd half cost us the initiative but for me the turning point was taking Jordan Henderson off and replacing him with Steven Gerrard. Henderson was instrumental, along with Allen, in the short passing and pressing that we excelled at in the first half. As soon as he went off the work rate, especially defensively, dropped off dramatically, and there was big gaps in the midfield. You could also see how disappointed he was when he was brought off. In hindsight a better substitution would have been Gerrard for Shelvey, as I thought Shelvey's 2nd half performance did not match his first. What do you think eds. Brian

Totally agree mate. i too was a little surprised that hendo went off instead of shelvo, who had a v quiet 2nd half.

if hendo stayed and stevie came on for JS, it would have been better for the team dynamic. hendo could sit abck and hustle with allen with Sg bombing forward. to me it was a little too gung-ho by BR leaving JS on and bringing LS & SG as well.

also the moment stevie came on was the moment shelvo wasn't the 'main' man any more..and it was visible.

the subs make all the difference...if done correctly. and its not only who you bring on, but rather who you take off which defines the outcome.

Sinner21

Shelvey is more of a goal threat.

This site was great and the Eds do a top job. However, I'm going to have to stop visiting as the mindless, negative persons are driving me mad. Rogers has been in the job 5 minutes and already has us playing some great football. Yes we're a bit soft at the back but you can't build a great team in 4 months with 1 transfer window and a small amount of money! Rogers is doing a fine job and Joe Allen is a fine player...give the guys a chance for you persons!

This is just my opinion but I really don't understand how people are giving Downing so much praise for last nite, I thought he was better than his normal level but I was severely annoyed by his lack of tracking back at times.

I also think Coates had a good game overall, the OG was unfortunate, but honestly I would have loved Reina to have came out there and cleared man and ball in that situation.

More balls need to be flashed to the edge of the 6 yard box instead of shooting (suarez near post shot etc.) Borini was there so many times for the tap in and never used. Once we start using his ability to peel from defenders and get in tap in situations he will score a lot imho.

Everyone needs to calm down. This team is showing it can play world class football at times. That is a good thing. The next thing they need to learn, and I believe Rodgers will teach themit, is that 30 or 45 or 70 minutes of that type of football is not enough. It requires 90 minutes of ruthless play. The next step for these young players is to learn how to win and finish teams off. A top team would have loved to have played the way liverpool played in the first half. The only difference is a team like Manutd or Barcelona etc, would have led 2-0 or more at halftime and the game would have been over. If we can be more ruthless in pursuing goals, and not have these lulls for 15 or 20 minutes a game we will be a very difficult team to beat. We are very young and very talented, that is in the long run a good thing.

guys stop the negativity it was a good game we played very good, I know we lost it its the only result that matters but it was a difficult game what so ever. just think if we sack BR after 2 months in the season whom are we gonna replace him with? who can we buy when we dont have enough money for players like lorente or cavani. Just give him some time he will come good, I have watched LFC play worse than ever when we had Hodgson and lost hope that we will be considered a top side or win anything, but now there is that glimpse of hope and we will be a good side one day just like Dortmund or like bilbao and even better. It will take time, even I am dissappointed but please dont judge the manager by 7-8 games. we gave hodgson 6 months lets take about this after jan
Red 316

I was sceptical about Rogers coming to us at the beginning but i am seeing a lot of potential in our play now. I can see him doing a really good job for us.

With the exception of the first few games (results to be expected to be fair) some of our play has been great. If he can do this in a couple of months i reckon the guy's gonna be a legend for us and i'll back him all the way.

You've been watching football at Anfield for 20yrs and you still haven't got a clue about football. If Borini hadn't have made the move to the front post and brought 2 defenders with him. Shelvey wouldn't have scored his goal. And he was playing upfront on his own against 3 defenders and only coming back from injury.

But hey! Who am I to disagree with someone who has been watching football at Anfield, for the past 20 years? Lol

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96
-----------------------------------------------
Blair mate we need fox in the box and borini is not our answer. I'm afraid if you think borini can take us to next level. If we want to finish in top4 then we need to buy a striker who knows how to score or else will be very difficult. Look at van persie he is the reason why united are not in relegation fight

Borini is a fox in the box type striker mate. Brendan persists in playing him out wide, in our front 3. Until BR plays Borini in the centre of our front 3 will we see the best of him and the goals will come. His movement has been fantastic considering he's being played out of position and he's still trying to fit in BR's style of play. Some LFC fans have no patience nowadays, its starting to get embarrassing. It took Crouchy 16 games to score for us, when he 1st came. Once he got off the mark, he was scoring hattricks for fun.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

The supply to Borini was poor, the movement and creativity of the wide men including full backs was not good enough. Borini was making good runs and not receiving the final pass. He may not be the finished article but the system we now play means the wide midfielders and full backs are the ones to help provide the chances. I would question the performances of others than Borini. Thats my analysis (from 40 years of going to Anfield!)

YNWA Evo

Good call with crouch comparison Blair the media were relentless on crouch not scoring think borini will come good,he certainly has the right approach & work ethic.........
Paisley's genius

05 Oct 2012 16:01:31
Nah blair borini has played half of his carrer in Rodgers systeam. How can you say he is trying to fit in Rogers systeam. Again nope he is not fox in box striker. If you look our game he gets 5/8 chances to score and he squanders them where fox in box striker would score 3/4 goals

A fox in the box type striker is there to get on the end of chances. Like you said he gets 5-8 a game because he's in the right place at the right time. With better service and a bit of confidence, he will get goals. Ive always thought and still do, that Borini will be a good signing for us. Fans were slating Lucas for years and look how that turned out. Borini has only been with us a few months and already people are rating him as highly as Dundee, Vorinin, Diouf (cost 11mill) etc, etc...

05 Oct 2012 17:37:09
So Blair in your opinion we don't need striker. Borini is perfect to lead our line. Blair be honest if we had striker like persie or torres etc where would we be sitting in the table. I think united place and united would be sitting our place

He's the first fox in the box we have had since Torres left.
Some people need to actually watch football blair, he's clearly a fox in the box, he's clearly a good player, he makes great runs and causes defences problems.
If he's not going to be scoring goals he will at least provide the space for others in the box. Like he did for shelvey the other day. He did that all game it's just our other players didn't take full advantage.

Sadly 'pretty play' is never remembered, only results count.
And we are not getting the results.
Can't help but think, if this had happened at Chelsea, the BR would be out the door already!.

05 Oct 2012 15:36:25
Really? You want another manager? With limited funds and how many other managers would actually come if we sack them every two months, how many players would join if that's the way we conduct ourselves. Think long term we not Chelsea we can't afford to do what they do, I can't help but think you know nothing about football

That's why we are not Chelsea as for "pretty football" I will never forget the way brazil played in Spain 82 still gives me goosebumps when I watch it....

Point being all this Brendan Rodgers has lost this game and that game, its alot harder to take a team Lets not make out that we were Man City and he's ruining us. Because thats hardly fair.

Yesterday I was at pains to say keep a level head with reults and stop the manic moods that accompany the fortunes of Rogers and I was slated for it.

Yes its great showing support and enthusiam for the team when its balanced with reality the problem is that its often based in failyland rather than reality and overblown hopes for this year will only end in tears.

Following Rogers plan its going to take 3-4 years to show fruition if it does work.

Players not good enough for our team:
Henderson
Downing
Allen
Johnson
Carragher
Borini

I agree with everyone but Allen, so far most consistent of our midfield never wastes procession, Johnson is lazy and annoying at time but is one of the best attacking fullbacks in the country and borini is only 21 and new to the league and only played 10 games cut him so slack!

You have zero idea!

Two weeks ago Allen was better than Stevie

You are a fckin emptied headed clown , joe allen is a quality player , johnson been very gud , fair enuf last nite

Glenn's been great so far but sometimes he turns up for games like he's stoned , like 1st half last night. Allen's had a mad few months , once he kicks in again he'll be fine. 05 Oct 2012 12:39:53
My views on the game:

Reina - a fantastic save in the first half, looked unstable on several crosses though. Seems unable to assert firm authority in the penalty area. Of the three goals, I am unsure on his positioning for Coates' masterpiece - he left the entire corner of the net exposed, but I think he was acting according to a standard procedure. All to all, he is NOT to blame for the loss - 6/10

Carra - made some secodnary mistakes, but wasn't responsible for the goals - he had no way of dealing with di Natale for the third. A good performance - 6/10

Coates - the lad did so well, but made a devastating mistake which cost us the game. I am really disappointed, because he looked better than Carra, but in retrospect, he is much more responsible for the bad result. 4/10

Robinson - I rarely saw him put a foot wrong. Was outplayed at times, but uses his body greatly to beat stronger players, and went in attack quite often. 7.5/10

Glen J. - was suspect defensively, and didn't contribute nearly enough offensively. His attitude is what most irritates me. The first goal was 75% his fault, getting caught in pocession, and some terrible movement afterwards leaving room for the Udinese player on the wing. 4/10

Allen - made some mistakes, which is unusual, given the high standard he has set. Allowed Di Natale to curl round him for the first, could've acted better. 5/10

Henderson - didn't make any mistakes, but rarely threatened the opposition. Fits nicely into possession football. 6/10

Shelvey - tremendous first half, dreadful second. Still hasn't got enough experience to be a constant factor. 8.5/10 first half, 5/10 second

Downing - a strong game, very pleased with our flop. He got an assist! Hasn't got the quality to turn a game around. 7.5/10

Assaidi - unhinged them in the first half, got lost in the second. Lost stamina? 6.5/10

Borini - nothing spectacular from the lad. Active, created some chances, but didn't get clear cut chances. Made the freekick for Suarez' screamer. 6.5/10

Conclusion: dreadful mistakes in the second half cost us the game. We still lack the class to finish off our opponents once we outplay them. Nice possession football in the first half, but we were once more dreadful in the back. Udinese are a classy opponent, far better than some people believethem to be, and took the maximum out of their chances.
The most worrying for me is the continous trend of senior players making a minimum of one fatal mistake a game.

Im very sorry to say this but Joe Allen brings nothing to the team whatsoever. I have watched him most of the season - he is there on the pitch but what does he do?

Im afraid I am of the same opinion. What does he actually do? And he cost quite a bit of money too.

05 Oct 2012 12:59:18
He is like a crab he just goes side to side then back to side and then goes backwards, allen you are allowed to pass forward you are so negative lad, whats the point of having the ball in are own half for most of the game, all those clowns who slate gerrard are muppets because if he gets injured for a long period we have no one to feed the forwards and would be goosed. ASHY

Jesus christ! I know you are probably a fan of football, but you've clearly never played it (or your about 12 which is why i'm holding my tongue).

Joe Allen dictates the tempo of our play, maintains possession for us when we are being pressed relentlessly, and offers a constant outlet to players further forward when they are under pressure. He is vital to preventing us being hit on the counter. He also spreads the play so others can exploit gaps in the opposition, and when the chance arises, exploits it himself.
Unfortuantely, he is not a midfield destryer. He is our Xavi, but he needs a Busquets next to him. Lucas is unfortuantely injured, making our defence look exposed, and making Allen look weak. Xavi would be nothing without someone next to him. Why do you think they have players like Busquets, Song, Mascherano and Keita? We need two player on that level to. Lucas cannot be relied on to stay fit for every game, all year round. I persoanlly think Henderson does the job well, if told to sit. We fell to pieces for 15minutes after he was subbed. Gerrard should have came on for Shelvey, who had started fading by that point. Henderson knew this, which is why he was annoyed at being subbed.
Does this answer your question in full? because i can rage a little more?

YNWA! (Adam)

Are you blind lad?

Are you serious? the lad is absolute class - he made 1 mistake

Keeps possesion... regularly brings it away from our goaline...makes passes...shall i go on or are you one of those guys who wanted to send Lucas home after a few games ? say no more ! Toniwan

People on here have no idea. Allens job is to make him self avaible and to keep the ball moving. He was not bought to smash in 40yard goals but to keep the ball. He may not play the killer pass but that is why we have Gerrard, Sahin, Shelvy, Suso etc. Some people need to understand this and then they would realise that he does his job better than anyone else. People dont realise thateach member off the team has their bit to play, other wise each team would play with 11 strikers and how crap would that be.
wildwelshman

What good is keeping position why not get a great big lad and stick him on the corner flag he would keep poession as well and might be just as effective as allen

You need to do something more than 5 yards back and accross passes and allen does nothing more

Yesterday, Allen made 135 passes, he completed 127

From those 135 passes, 33 were in the final third with 29 of those 33 finding a man.
He created 3 shooting chances.

Allen has the second most tackles in the team. He was fifth in the EPL in this stat last year. I haven't seen stats for interceptions, but imagine he would at or near the top of this list as well. The lad is very, very good at what he does.

That is silly. Allen is the little wheel that makes the whole machine tick. Players can't be judged simply on goals and assists you know, especially in the style we are trying to implement. Allen is proving to be vital for our midfield and will be a great star for years to come.

Drigan

Stats are not a great representation of football ability

Ask Damien Commoli about that one

DC got sacked because he always backed stats. Always has.

Just want to say, whilst thinking about the negative un educated fans posts about sacking br.

I thought to myself, how would i feel if br was sacked today?
Answer, id actually be really, really gutted. This is the manager weve been waiting for. Amazing with the player, media and fans. Knows exactly what he is saying, and we are playing our best football, well, in my life time. He needs at least 3 or 4 years, then see where we are at.

Its all part of the dance.

Benny baller

So we are playing the best football - where are we in the league?

6 league games doesnt make a season

05 Oct 2012 12:11:57
Not just last night but that's brought it back to the forefront of my mind that the lack of respect given to Lucas on these very pages after those three very good results was astonishing. Most folk had down for the cup teams, in reality it probably will be and rightly so Lucas and take your pick from the rest of the midfielders. One man dont make a team but we are missing him badly, his return to fitness can't come soon enough for me.

BR is spot on, we ruined everything with 20 mins of sloppy, lazy football. It doesn't matter if you have Xavi, Messi and company in your side if you dont stay focuesd and put the work in you will not get the results.
I'm getting sick and tired oh reading we deserved better, the fact is you earn your points, and last night they never put the shift in for a full 90. The manager knows this, let's hope the players start to learn it quickly, like he said, I thought we were passed this stage.

Here here. How can BR be blamed for last nights result when the team played well in the first half. It was the same team that came out for the 2nd.
They just need to be more consistant.

John

I'm going to make a rather bold statement here. Play Coates, Wisdom and Robinson in the defence with Agger. It is very young but it could be the remedy

Keith YNWA

Not a chance when we have
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique as 1st choice
Enrique was brilliant 1st half of the season last year.

Enrique 1st choice because he was brilliant 1st half of the season LAST year! That makes total sense, Robbie Fowler scored 28 goals in the 1995 / 96 season whats he up to these days?

So let me get this straight doomers and gloomers... BR is this BR is that... whinge whinge effing whinge ! Can we get some perspective on what happened last night please ? First of all it's a group game in the Europa league...not a must win and perfect opportunity to test some of the guys against some technically gifted opposition. On balance they didn't do too bad and were unlucky not to win in the end or at least draw. Secondly just because we beat Norwich 5-2 at the weekend are we supposed to be beating every team that lays before us ? Not going to happen ! Why ? Because BR is trying to embed a whole new ethos that has been alien to our team for god knows how many seasone now ! Let the man do his job and can all those BR haters get a life and just enjoy what he is trying to do. Hopefully FSG have the nuts to see this through and weed out all the old school whiners and trolls calling for his head. Whatever he's doing I like it and I can safely say it's been a while since I have felt this excited about where we are heading.... YNWA Tobiwan

Hi all you say in your post lets put some perspective on last night, well according to some stats i seen 661 passes completed and 70%of the ball, although this is all exciting stuff and pleasing on the eye,it is missing the most important thing end product, and the way were conceding goals at the minute its badly needs addressing,is this the way are season is going to pan out play teams off the park, and get nothing cause they have a di natale persie aguero rooney lads that can score regular, lads are going to be moaning and rightly so its results business and we want to be winning all are games.winning games builds confidence and puts us in a good frame of mind for next match how disheartening it must be for our boys to have so much of the ball and so many chances and still lose.ray

I hear what your saying Ray but BR has only been there for 10 or so games... give the guy a break no ? then if at the end of the season there has been no improvement you can say I told you so. BR isn't responsible for the past few years misdemeanours...Tobiwan

05 Oct 2012 13:42:08
Tobiwan(play on Obiwan perhaps?)
Totally agree. The fact we have limited strikers has been well documented, and quite frankly isn't BR fault.
Lets put everything into persceptive shall we?
Rebuild process will take time, watch what happens when old whiskey nose leaves united, teams always have ups and downs, the mark of a good team is still to be fighting for trophys even when your not at your best.
History suggests that even though we are without a premier league title since the year before i was born(jinx perhaps?) that we are still a top club capable of challenging for trophys. Maybe not perfect but i for one will take that until we get back to the top.
Still not good enough for some of you? Ask Leeds united fans or Blackburn Rovers fans, with our past financial stresses,we could have easily ended up with them.
So i digress, lets try and look at the glass as half full eh? And Judge at the end of the year,or maybe even the end of next year,to see if Brendan has what it takes.
Rant over.
WBD

Tobiwan i am not against br i see what he is trying to do i like his style of play, but there has to be a end product, all be it with some luck udinese beat us last night, but other teams will defend deep let us have the ball knowing that they will get a chance r 2 and take it,also we dont have the luxury to leave saurez on the bench in any game until we get someone else in to score br should b well aware of this i know he is trying to keep him free of injury for other games, but 40,000 fans last night is big money to be bringing in we need to stay in the competition if were getting them gates, god knows we need the money.

05 Oct 2012 11:06:30
First half-sublime!
As soon as we concede our insecurities are there for all to see not just the team but the crowd too.

I thought stevie was pretty poor when he came on only interested in passing to suarez which was a shame.

Yet ironically the ball he gave away was one where he had a straight pass to suarez and tried a more complicated one.

05 Oct 2012 10:43:53
It was disappointing last night and we deserved at least a draw. One thing it did show was that Johnson plays better on the left (where he has been playing recently). He was back on the righjt last night and although he had a fair game, he was probably our second worst player on the pitch. Reina made some stunning saves. RED LENIN

I think johnson always looks worse on the right when he has downing in front of him,rob b

05 Oct 2012 11:31:42
He seems to have to focus more when he is on the left, making him more aware. On the right he sort of slips in to a trance and more easily makes mistakes, but on the left he works harder because it is more difficult for him.

Jolly Red

Every time johnston plays right full he gives away a goal. Don't let him near right full anymore

05 Oct 2012 10:33:11
Pity we didn't get the result last night. There were some good performances out there, esp in the first half. Really impressed with Robinson and Coates. But my man of the match, even tho 3 goals went in, was Pepe. After coming in for a lot of stick (rightly so) but was excellent last night. Lets hope he gets his form back for the rest of the season. Did you notice how pumped up he was when he made that 'worldy' save?!

Hi Reds & Eds,
Just wanted to say that I accept that some people will be negative while results are up and down until the team finds it's natural balance between defence and attack. I just find it disappointing that some people are jumping on Joe Allen saying he offers nothing to the team. Allen's role in the team is to make things easy for his team mates. He offers himself as an easy passing option to team mates under pressure, while usually under some pressure himself and plays the ball to a team mate who is in a better position under no pressure to play a good pass forward. This is why people think he only plays sideways and back. He also does a decent amount of covering which tends to go unnoticed.
Only for him you'd see the back four and midfield forced to play 50-50 balls forward that lead to nothing. He controls the game for liverpool and I'm sure if you ask his anfield colleagues they'd tell you he is vital to the team.
Watch him and what he does, when he is in a position to pass forward he does and has probably hit as many/more completed dangerous forward passes as any other player in the team.

I agree so much with the original poster, Allen is doing a vital job. The number of negative posters on here about Allen only confirm what I have known for years. That is, it is amazing how many people go to games or watch them on television who have absolutely no knowledge of football wahsoever.

redmersey

Bang on red mersey. Some people just dont get some of the nuances of the game, have no idea what its like to play with a guy like Allen who constantly takes the pressure off players. Always willing to receive the ball in nearly all circumstances. Give the guy a break people cause I guarantee that yous who are whining about Allen really would be crying if City or Chelsea came knocking for him.

just gunna say guys, unlike the vast majority of the people that use this site, i refuse to get disheartened. we are playing some great football and dominating teams in every game, we have pushed through our youngsters alot earlier than planned.( what i mean by that is if kenny was still here they wouldnt of had a sniff yet ) we are officialy the youngest squad in the league. give the man a chance, look at how hes got us playing. its quite clear that we are in desperate need of a striker and in my opinion another defender, wether that be a centre half or right back.( wish we whent in for dawson and defoe when AVB first took over, reckon we could of got them ) my point is weve played 6 league games and 2 europa league games, brendan knows we need too strengthen in january......every liverpool fan with any sense does.dont drive this man out like we do when things arent goin right, its early days and he will get it right...mark my words on that. get behind him and get behind the team. if your not willing to do that then find another team and fans too bring down with your negativity!
harry h

How unfair ro Kenny he blooded many younsters and remember they are a year older this year then when he was in charge last year.

05 Oct 2012 09:53:37
Same old same old, play well n concede loads. IMO we need a CDM to cover maybe replace lucas, since he missing we letting goals galore in and who knows if he`ll ever return the player he was. As soon as we make an error in midfield we seem to concede, it looks worse than it is really, loads of teams make errors but have better cover in that area, i think if we fix this we will concede less.

Looked tighter with allen and henderson before gerrard came on

Shushyboy

Gerrard at fault again, unbelievable

05 Oct 2012 09:53:35
Again last night Borini looked like he was never going to score- I think it's about time we all realised he is not going to cut it at Anfield. I have been watching games for over 20 yrs at Anfield and apart from closing down when the opposition has the ball, this guy has nothing else to offer. He has been signed to score goals, he is not even alive to the rebound from the goalie- get rid in January and replace with a more lethal striker.

05 Oct 2012 10:05:46
i agree with you , but to be fair to the lad he made some gr8 runs , ultimately runs dont score tho
5gold stars

If you're talking about the incident in the first half yesterday, he was alive to it; it's just hard to actually get to the ball when a defender is grabbing you and dragging you away from it!

JammyRed

"About time" Christ, I hope you get more than about 20 hours of work in a new job you went to before they decided to get rid!

05 Oct 2012 10:42:24
Nobody said he was the finished article. He's 21 years old man, lets give the guy a chance. Or should we get rid of Shelvy, and henderson too? Maybe Kelly? After all,why play youngsters when you can buy players on massive wages? Its a project and it will take time to build. If you've been watching for twenty years then you should know better than to criticize young players giving their all and trying to make a name for themselves.
WBD

You've been watching football at Anfield for 20yrs and you still haven't got a clue about football. If Borini hadn't have made the move to the front post and brought 2 defenders with him. Shelvey wouldn't have scored his goal. And he was playing upfront on his own against 3 defenders and only coming back from injury.

But hey! Who am I to disagree with someone who has been watching football at Anfield, for the past 20 years? Lol

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Well said Blair Mayne! Borini made and excellent run to aid the goal for Shelvey. It wasn't the only intelligent run from him either. He is a clever player but is still finding his feet. He'll come good...

For once Blair I totally agree with what you're saying. It pisses me off when someone says they've been a fan or watching the team for a specified amount of time. It gives em no more knowledge or right of opinion then anyone else. To be honest those who specify the length of time they've been at it usually are the more I'll informed type, talk out of their hole in my experience.
J.C

Aside from making room for the other players with intelligent runs, Borini's main role is to SCORE GOALS- if he can't do that he should not be in our forward line up and it looks like we've been had again

I have been watching at Anfield for three years and I know that Borini is not good enough for this club

05 Oct 2012 12:42:21
Dont forget the couple of tap ins he would have had if early balls across the face of goal had been played instead of cut backs.

Simon

Another flaw in Borini's game is that he does not look like the sort of player who will be able to score a screamer from outside the box- how many goals has he got in total- I rest my case

Next rush maybe?

Lil Redn {Ed001's Note - hope not, it took Rush 3 years to get going and cost us our great scout Geoff Twentyman.}

This is a results business and br is useless at getting results even when we play well.

05 Oct 2012 09:35:30
I don't normally do the analysis thing, but I will make an exception.

Reina - great game - I have been a recent critic but
fair-do's
Robinson - good game - bodes well for the future -but perhaps not for Enrique
Johnson- I have always regarded him as ok going forward but poor defensively-last night didn't change my view
Coates-The future looks ok with this lad in the middle
as he gets more experience
Assaidi- not short on confidence but no end result
Henderson-I like this lad and think he can be a good player for us for a long time. But he needs to play regularly as I think his confidence in his abilities is fragile
Downing-wasn't bad last night but yet again he looks to lack confidence. The lad looks as though HE doesn't believe he is good enough to be at Anfield
Borini- at last playing in the centre....BUT...didn't get the service - but at least he goes looking for the ball

WBD - it wasn't my intention to go through the whole team and it would be better if I did not comment on Carragher but I did intend mentioning Shelvey - Great first half but in the second half he either faded or went into his shell with Gerrard's apperance
KH- not read ONE media report.Like I say I do not normally involve myself in inflicting MY opinions on you people and on the one occasion I do, you accuse me of copying news reports - trust you read a quality paper and I have not been accused of copying from a red top?

If you play a team without your key players and loose I guess it Rodgers fault for picking that team. His record at Liverpool makes Steve kean look good.

05 Oct 2012 09:34:51
Great game last night. Impressed with the pass and move system BR is installing. Ok, another loss, but its only the second game of the group and we're 1 point off the leaders. I'm sure if it gets to a must win to qualify game Brendan will select the strongest team possible. With such a small squad this year he needs these games to rest the league team and have a look at the fringe players. I think he's been spot on since his arrival. Another thing, although not a great game for the lad last night, but Assaidi 3m could be one of the bargains of the year.

3 defeats at home in a row tells its own story.
Brennan did say he wanted anfield as a fortress.
That is why i worry for our cub. Since Jan 2012 our league form has been shocking.
Time for br to be brave and drop some established players.
And start both pepe on Sunday.

Eds & fellow Reds,

Just been watching a BBC interview with Fowler released on the 3rd. When questioned about whether he would be up for having a coaching role at Liverpool he said he would love it! Why don't we get him in? He's a legend and always will be regardless of being part of the backroom staff. He loves our club and would give great advice to all our forwards, especially the likes of Borini and Morgan. Any thougts welcome

Fowlers Nostril {Ed002's Note - I cannot subscribe to the view of giving jobs to folks on the basis they are considered "legends" at the club. Staff should be recruited because they are the best at doing what they do and they are available. Perhaps once the fans force Rodgers out and Super Stevie Nicol gets the job then the likes of Fowler could come in to coach.}

05 Oct 2012 09:25:34
Hai ed great site,
and great work

just one question..
do we have a problem in selling henderson?
he is awful..and we dont need him..
shelvey with allen, sahin, lucas and gerrard..enough..

thanks {Ed002's Note - It is the close season, he cannot be sold.}

Henderson is good and will become a great. Gerrard realistically has no more than until the end of next season at most.

Football is not just a results business football is an art form,Liverpool of the 70's & 80's sublime football (the results will come)

05 Oct 2012 09:05:20
the 2 weakest links last night = henderson and downing.

I think if we'd uused Suso and Sahin instead of these 2 it may have been a totally different story.

Assaidi needs to learn BR's style of play, he is way behind the rest of the squad with the new tactical philosophy. He does look good with the ball at his feet but his play needs to be more direct.

Borini had a good game and if only the likes of downing could have checked his runs he would have been on the score sheet for sure.

Shelvey= the new gerrard, even down to the same reckless tackles gerrard made as a kid ;)

Allen looked a bit out of his depth last night, he really needs a player like lucas next to him to let him play his best.

Flanagan was impressive, good runs forward, crosses were good and defensively sound.

Johnson had a poor game but to be fair he has probably forgotten how to play right back as he is always being used on the left.

Coates had an good game, except for the own goal, promising future first team player, good tackling and diustribution and good in the air.

Carragher is a legend but as we all now he's past his best.

Reina looked better than in recent weeks.

I think BR is trying to hard to keep the whole squad happy, downing is being given his chance to shine, borini is being his chance to score etc.. We need to be picking out in form players exspecially against opponents of udinese's class!

All in all the future is looking good, a few tweaks here and there and we will be ripping opponents to shreds.

RedMurf

Flanagan didn't play mate, It was Jack Robbinson.

No point in Sahin 'learning' BRs methods, he will be off somewhere else, or back to his own team once loan ends.
He already plays to the style of a CL club, which is where he will surely head back to.

I thought Joe Allan was quality last night.

Without Downing the score may have been 1-3...he got the direct assist..

What are you taking about

Rodgers playing style sucks. Liverpool was a too big step up from Liverpool. He needed more experience first.

05 Oct 2012 09:00:21
Playing good footy don't mean crap wen you loose br needs to sort it out or find a small championsip club to manage.

In a few years time Liverpool will most probably be a small championship club, so he might as well stay there.

05 Oct 2012 08:52:43
Was at the game last night. Thought once again, we looked in control, played some smart football and dominated first half. No excuse first 10-15mins of the second half though, completely switched off and looked sloppy. Johnson needs to go, far to lazy on the ball. The rest, well for me some good performances but we need to tighten up defensively or we'll continue to get punished!

Any idea what the score is with Cole Ed?
BR was interviewed yesterday on Radio City and he said that he was ready and would feature but turns out, not even on the bench? Doesn't worry me cos I think the kids are more deserving right now but just wondered if somethings gone on?

Cheers Ed.

The Goatherder

05 Oct 2012 08:42:02
We are hammering opposing teams
we outplayed Udinese last night,
we battered united,
we pasted city
we caned the canaries
we are playing some beautiful football
we have a very talented squad
we have a very young squad

But

We are conceding too many goals, too cheaply.
Why Jamie Carrager last night? We should have played Skirtel with Coates.

Agree to all of the above. And none of the performers are BRs. He inherited a quality set up, and they are playing the way they have been brought up through academy or wherever. An overhall from the defence forward was not required. I think BR should have started with the front line coaching, he has weakened our defence to the point where teams expect mistakes.
Allen and Borini are lightweights, shown again last night against the europa league qualifiers. The return on these players for 28m cant be justified on results. Allen cant attack - or defend, but a lovely passer. Poor Borini cant keep running to places his team mates wont pass too. He either runs too obviously or too late. Cant keep blaming their team mates every for their lack of performance. 28m on a 'goal attempt' conversion coach. Now that would have been worth spending the money on. Sadly thats not BR.

05 Oct 2012 08:39:38
defense is our problem, accept it. we don't have any clean sheet.
BR change assaidi who play left wing put Suarez in who is a Striker. then who will play in Left wing ? after we go down we play good football why not we show that before we go down.

r-r

05 Oct 2012 08:32:49
Liverpool were lazy, says Rodgers in BBC.
I am not agree with you BR you have no idea about Udiense, the team play CL last 2/3 years. they knock out penalty shootout this year qualifying. a weeks a go they beat AC Milan in Milan's home san Siro.
but BR not even use his best young player. Suso, Raheem, Sahin all warming bench. Gerrard, Suarez, Agger, Skartel. all watch from bench we well beaten by a good team. they change thier plan in 2nd half and win it. BR don't have a 2nd plan.

hhh

Hi eds and fellow reds,

I would just like to comment that although I am as frustrated as others that we aren't always getting the results we deserve this season, I have to admit I like the style of football that we are playing. I did not think it would start coming together so early on, but it is clear that BR is getting his message through, we outplayed Man City and Utd at Anfield and its not as if we didn't outplay Udinese last night either.

It is clear that we haven't found the balance yet between the attacking football and defensive duties, however I do believe that it will come. I expect nothing from this season but to let BR's style of play get ingrained into the squad and as a consequence of this a top half of table finish. However I do think BR is the right man for the job, his attitude and commitment is excellent, and he is instilling that into the players we currently have.

Come next season, once he has signed a few more players with the commitment and desire to give 100%, I think this will be the time to start judging him fully. I am impressed by him so far though, and it is easy to see his influence on the pitch, I can't help but think the FSG messing up in the transfer window may actually benefit us in the long run as it has forced BR to give some of the youngsters a go, and they are showing desire and passion to play for us!

Kingobuzz

I agree with what you say. I thought the first half was brilliant from our perspective. I am worried though that we are a getting to be a team that looks great with the ball but poor without. When we conceed possesion we look really fragile and 2 goals were given away like this last night. Borini & Assaidi are not at the races too - yes they press well but we need more in their roles.

Pompey Red

If you are correct and this is a year of transition, why should the top quality players want to remain to see out this experiment, waiting to see if they can get CL qualification in 2014 or after. Two years is an enormous time in the life of a footballer in form with no real ties to the UK. I mean Suarez, or indeed Sahin. Without LS KD lost his striker. Whereas LS is saving BR's skin.

By your account, and I agree the timescale certainly wont be 2013, it is acceptable to have no success for two seasons. Success measured on winning cups. Thats not a strategy I see any owner subscribing to - unless they dont mind, because they are happy to have a cash cow which are nearly-rans like Arsenal. Is that what you want? I liked winning cups. Last season was a good start.

05 Oct 2012 08:10:04
Well it's the morning after a dissappointing loss. I only managed to watch the first half and could only catch little bits of the second.

Like all fans I am dissappointed with the result, but lets put some rational perspective on the game shall we?

In my eyes, we completely dominated the first half, Udinese couldn't get near us and they were chasing shadows. We passed them to death and it seemed like we were in full control. Next thing you know they've scored at the start of the second half and we have to try and take the game to them again - which we did to a certain extent.

Major turning point for the game was the "rugby" tackle on Downing. Should have been a red card, no question. If you raise your arms your supposed to be off, this ref simply didn't follow the letter of the law. Minutes later, they've scored two goals and it's game over!

I couldn't believe how the press are reporting the game....."Liverpool were poor" etc. I trust what BR said in his post match interview - we were sloppy and lazy. BUT lets remember that it was a Europa game and if we can continue our winning form in the premiership, then by Sunday tea time we will have forgotten about this game and all will be forgiven.

I find myself so excited about games now that the down time between matches is agony. I just want to keep watching us play! BR has brought this about with his style of passing, hard work, commitement to the badge and the introduction of exciting youngsters. I'm very excited about our future.
I used to think bringing back Rafa would be a good thing, but having seen the team develop under BR, with the help of this documentary, I wouldn't have Rafa back at all. I have TOTAL faith in BR and only hope the majority of our loyal fans keep supporting him both from the stands and on forums like this one.

Just my humble opinion.

Hello Eds,
not a rumour but a quick comment. Liverpool played beautiful football last night in the first half. That`s what all fans would like to see on regular basis. Pity the second half was not so impressive.

Its a 90 minute game mate

i think we finally have a goalscoring in Jonjo Shelvey! Possibley the next Gerrard, BIG STATEMENT. Comments welcome
Redmanluka

I am sorry but I have to comment, Shelvey the next Gerrard, no chance, he is less mobile now than Gerrard is at 32.

How many times do you see Gerrard apologizing for playing a poor ball. I was at the match last night and my memory of Shelvey was poor passing (lost count of his hand in the air apologies to fellow players he made), poor tackling, lack of mobility and pace. Credit where credit is due he was in the right position to score and it was a good finish.

Shelvey excellent first half. Second half not so much so ... not sure whether he faded or whether Gerrard's introduction sent him back into his shell

I am growing tired of 'pretty, pass and move football', I want 'RESULTS' football instead.
Screw this delicate thing!.
We keep trying to pass the ball into the net (sorry, it ain't working'), we are not Barca!. {Ed063's Note - Is this person for real?}

ED VERY MUCH SO!!
it is the results of the games that will bring back the glory days, and not the way we play!
and has anybody stopped to think why BARCA play like this? easy coz they have some of the best players in the world, so they can!

Mr. Einstein, you answered your own question when you wrote "why do Barca play like this". They play like this because it's a team system, a team philosophy and a team drive to win !! Sure, having some of the best players around helps, but then look at Real Madrid. Almost everyone will agree that they have individual players who are as good if not better than Barca's and yet they have achieved nothing close to what Barca has achieved in the last 5-10 years. The results for LFC will come !! ra1969

Do you think barca played like that overnight ? We are in a transitional period and to be honest mate we are further ahead than many thought we would be. With the introduction of a striker in January or the summer will see us improve even more especially on results. Please don't point to barca now. Point to bad a good few years ago when they were where we are now. Some LFC fans are far too impatient. Yes I want results but I would prefer continued results for the future with the introduction of young players playing a great style rather than trying to buy the league with players who only have a few years in them - thn when they are done we have to fork out millions for a replacement. Have patients lad

Sad that we were not able to field 'our best' tonight.
Have to feel for poor BR, as he has to 'conserve' our best striker, and not be inclined to 'overplay' LS.
Its only October, but our 'striker' defecit is already weighing heavily and impacting performance, and January is still a awful long way off.
Oh, the 'shortsightedness' of our FSG owners, just can't understand the stupidity of it all!.

True we should of signed players - the emergence of suso, sterling, shelvey etc is a massive hinderance on the future of our club. I thank the owners and So would many of the young players !

For the neutral it was a great game but i'm not neutral and while it was a good game i'm pi**ed off at another result thrown away ...AGAIN !
That said and on a positive note , it's not as if we were outplayed , far from it we're playing some great stuff - just these stupid errors that we keep getting punished for .
Has to be said , i thought Johnson was back to his cavalier self tonight and for me was at fault for the first goal .
An own goal can happen anytime but the more i look at it , looks like Coates thought he was up the other end aiming a lovely header into the corner !
Shame 'cos i reckon Coates is improving and apart from that had a good game .
I know Downing had a hand in the first goal and tonight was ok ... but sorry i just don't rate the guy & never have!
I'm gonna support Borini as i thought he worked hard - yes i know that should be a given but we've had some that didn't haven't we ? At times in the first half if you watch his runs into space he wasn't found when he was in good positions - that's not his fault but the support players taking the wrond option .
I hope his luck turns and if he keeps working hard then surely his and the team will start to get the goals they deserve .
Having said that - credit to Udinese who were a good well organised team - apart from that rugby tackle on Downing ....i mean what the hell ....?
Most irritating moment - Gerrard ignoring an easy pass to a man in space and trying the hollywood ball and giving it away ....leading to the 3rd goal .
I know Stevie is a legend and i hate to criticise him but for me THAT is something i just can't stand - Downing is usually the culprit .

Final positive note - young Robinson at LB , just as impressive as Wisdom in previous games and i also thought Henderson did ok until he was subbed .

Getting tired of these Demba Ba rumours!!
1- He's a big clumsy striker like the one we put on loan!!
2- His knee is a ticking time bomb hence him failing his medical last year at Stoke!!!
3- People please search how many goals he scored last season!!
4- how honestly do you think he will fit into the BR system??!
5- Carroll will be 10 times better then him and we put him on loan so what does that mean about Demba Ba??
Hoping the editors put this up sick of these terrible rumours getting linked cos he finally scored 3 goals!!

Southall Scouser Chind

Initially you refer to AC as big and Clumsy and then basically go on to say he'll be amazing... Make your mind up sport!

I think the posters moaning can't see that we lost this game due to the performance of Di Natale. He was a constant menace, created and scored 1st and created 3rd, always dropping into space, excellent touch and hold up play allowing the wide players to attack flanks.

He was difference between sides and if we had played Suarez for 90 mins instead of 25 mins we would have got a win.. but we chose not too and that cost us in terms of result.

We still had enough chances to get the draw or win, and played very well in long spells.

Yes Udinese pressed better and changed their gameplan for 2nd half and disrupted our rhythm but we could and should defend better.

Bright spots - Robinson played well, Shelvey and Dowining good 1st half, Reina great save and better performance and Suarez looking sharp.

Negatives - poor game from Johnson, Borini not gelling, Carragher just not the answer and badly miss Lucas.

the goals are now starting to come but we have to keep a clean sheet. Until then we have good possession and performances but bad results.

How was that Brendan.. ok.

"...because a familiar flaw of Rodgers' fledgling reign came to the fore. Liverpool give a goal a game to their opponents. While, for Liverpool, it seems scoring is an arduous task based on meticulous planning and carefully patterned passing moves, the visiting team simply have to wait for the inevitable mistake. " Telegraph 4/10/12

BR has destroyed the defensive stronghold that was in place last season when LFC was the hardest team to score against bar the two manc teams.

While we played well last season we didnt convert. Now we apparently play well again. But what good is a change in 'system' if we lose the core stregnth of last season's team which was to stop other teams scoring. Stoke are a canny team. And as they are at Anfield on Sunday they must fancy their chances.

Loving that 5 have already disagreed, so you don't believe the goal stats that are their in black and white for you to read.

Who is the current defence coach then?

Answer: there isn't one. A tactically aware Manager wouldn't damage the strongest part of his team that was already in place last season. A 'coach' however, might like to try and show how smart he is by implementing a 'system'. Unfortunately without the experience of winning, BR seems to have ignored that is only achieved when you stop conceding goals. He will find that out more acutely when LS isn't there to pull his beloved system out of the toilet. Shelvey, our other goal scorer already missing due to disciplinary.

BR needs someone above him. He can't come out an complain about the players. Its his change of the midfield which weakened the existing stregnth in place from last season. Go check the goal conceded stats children.
