Im starting to get confused whos a first teamer and whos not! Players who would normally play europa arent ie suso and jones Players play in earlier games and then disappear totally ie pachecco. Then theres players who've vanished into thin air ie doni flanno and morgan. Does anyone honestly know what our starting eleven is? Is johnson our first choice left back in the league and right back reserve in cups? Surely players need to start playing more regulary in their best position to get a team pattern and rocket science. Wholesale changes never works. Confidence comes from playing and gaining understanding with your teammates.

Paulie

Does it matter?

Name me one team that plays European and domestic games with an exclusive starting 11?

It's a squad game, and we've got a small squad. Constant change is inevitable.

This saying Liverpool played well and didnt deserve to lose is not washing with me, Rodgers and Liverpool need to win first look good second, this idea that everything is ok if we play well but lose is getting really tiresome and its only been a month into the season.
Borini is a dud, all this, his runs are good is a poor excuse, he is a footballer not a runner and needs to be better with the ball.
on the positives i thought Downing put a shift in and credit where its due he responded to the managers request of working harder.
Our defence WOW, I dont know how many games its been now without a clean sheet but every time we play im not feeling confident we are going to, a massive bid for Shawcross should have been a priority years ago. a leader who will put his body on the line to stop the ball going past him, a young Carragher if you will.

I am so annoyed with such posts...I log into this site everyday but there is such a contrast in banters after a win and loss of game...After Norwich game every single fan on this site was gung-ho about BR and his methods..Today same bunch is slating him for being pretty but not effective..Is there anyone on this site who can put his hand across his heart and say that we were not the better side..that we didnt deserve to win..Up until half time we were miles better and ahead..In second half Udinese got 2 goals in 2 minutes- courtesy Own goal and a thundershot..but somehow after ages I had this feeling that we can still win..we can score more than opposition no matter how many they have scored...this is different..BR and his philosophy has been fantastic so far..Ball control and first touch have improved vastly..players now seem to have confidence in system..First time in years somebody is taking the bull by its horns..either in team selection or making substitution choices..Right from the start All BR has been asking for is PATIENCE but alas thats the only thing so called Fans dont have...we have been really really good with this small young squad..dominating matches but not getting the deserved result at times..so what..is it gonna stay like this forever..NO..so be Patient..

I think it's time to show some serious support to Reina, he's a class act but not making many saves any more. Personally I think his song is crap so I would like to suggest the old "Brucie, Brucie Grobelaar, Brucie Grobelaar in our go-oaal" tune to Pepe Reina?

just a thought!

As a liverpool fan I let my head rule my heart in the bookies today and while I got 66/1 on half time/ full time I'm disgusted on happier note I won 330 but we need to sort out the defence big time ynwa JON96

Let me get this straight you bet Liverpool to lose?
Great fan just what I expect

i think we should go with 4-2-3-1, and have 2 sitting MF, as good as allen is hes no lucas defensively i think when lucas is fit, lucas and sahin sitting, sahin is more box-box with lucas defensive cover. leaves up to put suarez of possible jan buyup front
and then a nice 3 of shelve/gerrard, sterling and assaidi on each wing

Borini was excellent today, he was singled out for praise by the itv4 team after the game and rightly so. It's a shame he's not getting the goals I think a lot of it is to do with the fact we have not had a player making intelligent runs into the box since torres left (well 18 months befor he left) and our other players are learning how to provide proper service and make assists again.

Downing was also good, the rocket suppository method must of been used. But it also annoys me that he was making such an effort today because it's makes me think where have you been for the last 12months? If it's just a case of actually breaking into a sweat then you don't deserve the shirt mate.
Losing his spot to suso and sterling must of made him think about his career and how it's going down the pan unless he starts putting in the effort.

Johnson was awful for me, his positioning and effort is awful and it's costs us time and time again.

Pepe was unlucky to concede so many today that save was immense I hope he rediscovers his form because more and more people are writing him off.

It's typical I have been posting a lot over the summer about how Suarez is never going to score enough goals and he must of read it because it's like his personal mission to prove me wrong right now.

Shelvey is turning into something special. That's all on him.

MIKEY

I desperately want Borini to be excellent but without telling me "he worked really hard" (which should be a pre-requisite for wearing the shirt by the way), I'm afraid I don't see what footballing quality he offers.

Hope I'm proved wrong, but I could work my balls off for 90 mins, doesn't make me good enough to play for Liverpool.

Joe

Hes a late bloomer

People need to show patience we are getting there, there is no quick answer so all this moaning needs to stop, our 2nd team narrowly lost to udinese. Big woop, under Brendan we will be a huge success, in Brendan I trust, there isn't a good enough manager to replace him anyway, and before I get a reply, f**k rafa is mine.

IMO.this match brought a few things to lite..carragher is terrible he isn't helping coates at all.this was glen johnson worst game this season..keeping the ball without penetration doesn't win games..we need lucas back asap..I hate the way allen is exposed at the back..udinese played a counterattacking masterclass today..downing was really impressive today, assaidi had a bad game..some of our players need concentration training..no need to panic pips things would get better..YNWA. Mixed night tonight, the result didn't go our way but their were some encouraging performances and signs. Have issues with a few players, here is the rundown:

Reina - Few shaky moments when coming to deal with crosses in the 1st half but generally very good - made a great save from a header. Could do nothing to prevent any of the goals.

Johnson - Solid is unspectacular in the 1st half although missed a golden opportunity to square it to Borini for a tap in. His mistake lead to a goal in the 2nd half and he was sloppy in possession, poor defensively, poor on the ball, and was basically a liability until the final whistle.

Robinson - Great performance, solid at the back, assured going forward, loads of stamina, surely Enrique's long term replacement (or perhaps replacement for right now)?

Coates - Really solid, played well, defended stoutly, distributed the ball well, everything you want from your centre back. The only blot on his performance was his misjudged header that led to the own goal, apart from that was very good and constantly broke up play, especially when the dangerous Di Natale was on the ball.

Carragher - has simply lost it, too slow to react anymore, any ball over the top looks a danger when he plays. It is a shame to see such a club stalwart on such a decline but I do not believe he is capable of doing a job for us against decent opposition. In the 1st half he was relatively untested, when Udinese upped the tempo and the pressure he struggled.

Allen - I struggle to see what he provides except short, accurate passes. He does that well but we lack a player to break up opposition attacks when he plays, he is not a defensive midfielder but doesn't seem to have any bearing on the attacking play either. Great for keeping possession but unfortunately little else.

Henderson - Was very good in the first half, had a lot of energy and intensity about his game, clearly busting a gut and was generally good. Was more anonymous in the 2nd half.

Shelvey - Very good first half performance, Gerrard-esque you could say. In the thick of the action, attacking, building up play, scored a goal, very good. Really faded in the 2nd half, not sure if this was a stamina issue but seemed to lack any of the influence he displayed in the first half.

Assaidi - looked really threatening in the first half, decent deliveries, caused panic for Udinese and was very sharp. Completely anonymous in the 2nd half and seemed to lack energy, was he fatigued?

Downing - really good first half performance, actually looked up for a change when crossing the ball and found Shelveys grateful head waiting. Ran at players and was genuinely very good. In the 2nd half it seemed like he was satisfied with his 1st half performance and so stopped trying, or tried to do stupid things. Not sure he will be here for the years he supposedly wants.

Borini - loads of energy, intelligent runs which dragged defenders all over the place. But that was pretty much it, hope to see him more involved in future games. Johnson should have provided him with a tap in.

SUBS:

Gerrard - gave the ball away twice in midfield which eventually led to the 3rd goal. Has been hit and miss this season and was very sloppy tonight when he came on, hope he can up his game because we are going to need him at his very best.

Suarez - absolute world class, changed the complexion of the game and looked like he might go on and win it for us. Stunning freekick, good interplay with those around him, really starting to find his form this season, very positive signs.

Sterling - Looked bright, sometimes tries to do too much but, at 17 years old, it is to be expected. On another night might have got a goal - one shot was defended well by Udinese and the other drifted just over the bar. Bags and bags of potential.

Conclusion:

Great 1st half, sloppy, almost lethargic 2nd. Passing game worked well, Udinese were chasing shadows. A couple of individuals really let the team down tonight because, as a unit, we were fluid and could easily have scored more goals. Positive signs and, despite the performance, feel cautiously optimistic that we will win more than we lose this season. Only worry is that this is the 3rd straight loss at Anfield - we want the place to be a fortress, not a sandcastle. Also worrying is the sheer volume of goals we are conceding - a common theme this season seems to be the gap between defence and midfield, really are missing Lucas in a big way. Allen or Henderson (or whoever is adopting his role when out on the pitch) need to step up there defensive role much more - back four has looked way too vulnerable, that cannot continue. Hopefully onwards and upwards against Stoke at the weekend - we definitely have the tools to beat them with style.

SMc

Brilliant summation of what Allen brings to LFc.
Perhaps the blinkered youth who populate many of the Liverpool blog sites etc are starting to realise Allen doesnt have the mettle to defend or attack. Looking neat and tidy in passing only gives the midfield no thrust or threat. Allen's moves are never incisive. Just pretty. What was 15m for exactly. jmac

He's currently 2nd in tackles in the team. Last season for Swansea he finished 5th in the entire league for tackles. Yeah, he's just terrible defensively...

RDL

I agree with you everything except Joe Allen. He is vital for our system.

The real AG

I habe said many times in here about allen and all i get is disagrees and comments like 'plastic fan'. its good he keeps possession and makes good short passes but is that all we want him here. he doesnt loose the ball thats good but will the whole day play and no penetration and just passing will win us the game, we got to think.

redh0t {Ed063's Note - He dictates the tempo and play of our game - he is our midfield general, all at the age of 22. Gerrard answers and listens to Joe Allen, he is unbelievably good. If he keeps going like this Barca will come knocking, make no mistake about how good he is my friend}

Drunken fools listen, Allen played more advanced last night, he was still available more often than Shelvey or Henderson, he was more economical than both too. He played 3 balls into the opposition area (1 i would deem as "Killer") and made 2 runs into the final third. If you're still humming the tune "Passes Backwards or Sideways" then actually count the times he doesn't, you will amaze yourself.

I love watching the passing football but as I said back in July, its very naive to think teams wont just come and hit us on the break. You have to capitalize when you are on top and I don't think we have the forwards yet to do this, its very one dimensional.

I'm very confused and I'm not sure how to feel really. Principally its very admirable but I'm not sure where its going to get us. We could do with learning how to protect a lead as well. Its funny how we are possibly the exact opposite now to Rafa's system.

For me, unless we are tighter then we are going to struggle.. poor mans Aresnal?

Good luck fellow reds and Brendan - great guy - I hope we get a good striker in Jan to convert possession into goals..

Gazman

04 Oct 2012 23:07:38
Well if I was playing against liverpool....

I would tell my players... Sit back behind the halfway line... Let them pass it around the back 1000 times then when joe allen or gerrard cross the halfway line.... Press them...tackle them....then break forward and score...because lfc fullbacks have left their positions and only the centre backs r left

Easy....

So all the possession at the back is pointless... Play it forward for godsake

Udinese cudnt touch the ball first half and still won

Play the ball forward quicker.....and fullbacks learn when to break forward just incase the centr mids lose the ball

Pete

Maybe you should send your CV in Pete?

Wow you must better than Mancini and Ferguson... Just stay BEHIND the halfway line without the ball and Liverpool won't know what to do... Simple but... Simple!

04 Oct 2012 23:03:07
20 Total Shots 8
7 Shots on Target 3
91% Pass Accuracy 71%
80% Aerials Won 20%
8 Dribbles Won 1
18 Tackles 21
75% Ball Possession 25%

Very impressive. But only one stat counts...and it's not listed there.

If you look back 6-8 weeks ago everyone was asking where the goals would come from. Well, we can score them. But what is happening at the back? Unbelievable! Confident that BR will get it right though.

Why did BR mess up a perfectly good defence, that was already in place last summer and last season.

Whats changed? Look at the composition of the midfield and ask yourself, who could intimidate and defend against other teams attacking midfielders. They have gone. They might have been unloved, but they were attack minded and tough. Borini and Allen are too lightweight for this midfield.

Borini is hardly there to protect the back 4. Last season we had Lucas for that and then Spearing & Adam. We had a reliable back 4 consisting of Johnson, Agger, Skrtel and Enrique.

The 4-3-3 doesn't provide this protection. A return of Lucas can only help.

04 Oct 2012 23:01:23
Look red fans...we were the better team by a mile but with all the possession there was little penetration as BR says is key to this style of play and he knows this...downing simply doesn't do it for me got the assist but is too slow on what he is going to do and the space is lost! As BR said in Being Liverpool this season is all about building a squad to go forward with...Its only 1 game...yes we lost but keep the faith..our 1st team is quality i.e. team against Norwich..lb is johnson best position...however on tonights game henderson n allen can't control the midfield..too similar of player..we need a player that will hold like lucas..conor coady perhaps but would go all out to get victor wanyama!...allen is the more quality of the two and you would see him in his best position slightly further forward...Borini is our new kuyt FACT should be played on left to cut in n try our natural finisher in Adam Morgan up front in cup games

We really lack a def mid tonight
and where panicky and naive in defence. We suffer when we come up against teams with a lot of experience and a bit of quality

Borini is great off the ball but is one of those new style non scoring forwards and a little lightweight. Downing I thought played well and worked really hard

Just cranks up the pressure again for Sunday. I pray for Suarez to remain injury free we are so dependent on him

04 Oct 2012 22:46:20
Think tonight highlights the need for Lucas to return to full fitness as soon as he can!
We are leaking goals because we dont have a protector in front of the back four. Allen is filling in there but he isn't a player who will track opposition players runs and find danger before it develops.
He is a good tackler in front of a more defensive player and a great passer.
In terms of the result lets not over react, remember the positive posts before the game?
If we dont get out the Europa League group but finish top 6 then thats a successful season.
Think of the bigger picture.

Jay

I would not mind goin out of the europa league tbh. Its simply an unwanted distraction. Would love to see us win the league cup or fa cup, n finish top6.
Indian Buzzer {Ed063's Note - Tbh I agree with you}

Disagree, if it hadn't have been there could we have blooded all these youngsters and watched them graduate to the 1st team?

04 Oct 2012 22:41:39
Work in progress. Loads of positives. Obvious negatives.Coates is going to be a 'world class' defender. Anyone who knows anything about football can see that the future is going to be very bright indeed.

04 Oct 2012 22:40:52
Eds please could you say who is our defence coach? whoever he is we should get rid because it's not working. {Ed001's Note - as far as I am aware, we don't have a specific defence coach do we?}

Doh! The defence coach? His name is Brendan

Disappointing result but it is a season of transition so I won't be negative about the performance. I thought there were a lot of positives and it could have been a different result if the ref had produced a red card for the rugby tackle which he should have in my opinion.
We aren't getting any luck at the minute but I believe it will come and results will begin to change.
A striker in January would be welcome but I wouldn't be surprised if no-one comes in.

I still have faith in what Rodgers is doing but Carragher is finished, he's a liability at the back these days. Sloppy goals now week in week out have to be eradicated big time

Does anybody else think its time to give Robinson a Premiere League start at left back?

I rate him more then enrique.

04 Oct 2012 22:37:54
Lucas was sorely missed tonight. All those attacks came in from the center, especially that goal from Di Napoli. Lucas would have shut down a lot of that. Where is that finisher / goal scorer ?? I really hope we get one in the January transfer window. This can't continue like this for too much longer..... ra1969

04 Oct 2012 22:37:39
Hi Eds
Great site. I just wanted to ask do you think we can attract quality payers with the wage and budget restrictions in place now under the owners? Or should we as fans lower our expectations to youth players and average buys?
It just seems to me that with the youth players Brendan has been forced to use due to the lack of funds the owners will again be able to spend little or nothing. {Ed001's Note - yes we can, of course we can.}

04 Oct 2012 22:33:40
What an absolute joke. just wow. something NEEDS to change.

Your attitude maybe?

Here we go trolls are back moaning already. Look we are already playing amazing football think about it when brendon sorts out defence and bit more clinical finishing we will be right up there! It's called patience I love the way as soon as we lose all the negative idiots come back on the site! Go away! We need fans that support us Lose or win

We've scored 8 goals in 3 games mate. Its the defending and cover for the defence. That needs addressing.

Getting tired of losing and saying we never deserved to lose starting to wonder if Brendon Rodgers has got what it take sad lfc fan looking for some light at the end of the tunnel hopefully there are some fans here to give me some perspective but getting tired of this now

04 Oct 2012 22:29:15
Oh um Oh um. I watched the first half of the match this evening and at half time thought Udinese looked average at best. Couldn't get near the ball, no possession and giving it away when they did get it. 1-0 Liverpool, well done, good movement nice touches and great team spirit.
Unfortunately I couldn't get to see the second half, so imagine my surprise on seeing the final score and seeing all the stats for possession and attempts on goal. I'm wondering if someone has got them the wrong way round.
Oh that's right, previously having posted on this site and stating that, if you can keep a clean sheet you can win a match. I said that if you concede two to three goals a game you won't win many.
It's been a concern for quite some time for me and I think that being able to keep a clean sheet is a basic of football, and it's seems that it's not every high on BRs agenda
When BR was in charge of Swansea, I watched the game they played at home against Newcastle. They battered Newcastle. What was the result? 2-0 Newcastle.
If Liverpool are to start winning games on a regular basis they are going to have to have the ball for 100 percent of the game, because when we haven't got it we are going to concede.
Is this Brendan's master plan?
I could think of a better one.

Stu the Red

-- "I said that if you concede two to three goals a game you won't win many." --

That's bloody genius that is. Did you come up with that nugget of brilliance all by yourself?

Who is the defence coach this season..?

Look at the stats last season for league goals conceded and compare with the current rate of goals conceded. Because of stout defending last season and despite Suarez going missing, 8th was achieved where it might have become bottom half.
Now, without any defending strength and a still stuttering goal performance, it makes 8th a distinct risk. Playing pretty and conceding every game is no way to win Trophies. jmac

04 Oct 2012 22:27:53
hi eds this football is lovely to watch tika taka, with no end,we need to buy striker come January we can;t afford to b leaving saurez on the bench if we want to b winning games,we have no one to replace him

04 Oct 2012 22:26:01
Already the moaning begins, admittedly the defensive side of our game is a cause for concern. But all goals were conceded from bad touches, Johnson should never have been looking to take it down in that position and Gerrard has an easy straight pass but gives it away cheaply (not for the first time this season that it has led to a goal). Not going to have a pop a Coates as I thought he played very well and Carragher left him marking two players on that free kick. I felt he carried Carragher all night to be honest and I noticed when he headers the ball he looks to head to our players every time a la Hyppia, whilst Carragher just aimlessly pumps it up field. Jamie will always be a legend but as others have said time is up. Felt we were really unlucky tonight but I have faith in Rodgers and again a very frank & honest asessment of the game in his interview, anyway on to the weekend for another good performance but with the win we need and hopefully a clean sheet. YNWA

What about all the games Gerrard has won you on his own without him I'd put a big wager on Liverpool to be relegated I wouldn't like to see it tho,Im not an lfc supporter but I like lfc as my second team an I hope you get back to where you belong the top

04 Oct 2012 22:19:00
I agree that we are leaking a good few goals but you also have to consider the fact that this wasn't exactly our first team. As time goes on the defence will tighten up.
*We are in a transformation period so it will take time to adjust to the new philosophy.

04 Oct 2012 22:18:58
When Lucas i out injured our defence is not good enough.

Yes, that is correct, when our world class defensive midfielder is out injured we don't defend as well as when he's fit and playing.

Looking for tickets for the Wigan game. Anyone help? Coming over from Ireland

04 Oct 2012 22:15:02
Disappointing result. Good in the first half but very nervy in the second. Goals conceded due to sloppy defending. Shelvey and Borini played well, we were more threatening when Suarez came on. Stoke is going to be similar to Udinese, so Rodgers has work to do on our defence this Sunday. Singred

Wait, what? Stoke is similar to Udinese? Really?

04 Oct 2012 22:14:31
Positives:
Played well against top side without full strength team
Downing played very well IMO
Suarez scored again
Reina made a few good saves

Negatives:
Conceded 3.
Defence was weak
Lacking out and out striker
Still not getting refereeing decisions IMO.
Luck is not on our side

Felt Pinzi should have seen red for his rugby tackle on Downing!
Maybe could of had a claim for a penalty on a few occasions.
I feel we are getting lazy though when we go ahead. We just seem to sit back once we go in front which is the only real concern IMO.
All in all though a good performance from the lads!
If anyone disagrees or has something to add, opinions are welcome,

All this passing is great, but we are having to commit to much up front to break teams down to get a goal, and this is leaving us vulnerable at the back.
He needs to get the balance right soon.

That's why we need Lucas back mate asap. He is so reliable in retrieving/winning the ball back when we've lost it. Lucas's presence in the team is not underestimated nor taken for granted.

Lucas is as important to us as Stevie, Luis, Agger, Skrtel, Allen and who ever else wears, the red shirt. And probably our most important player in the way Brendan wants us to play. He said so himself. If Lucas was fit we wouldn't be getting caught on the break as much as we do.

Get well soon Lucas, you are needed...

Sickening how far kenny set us back. I would just let Downing and Henderson go for nothing, then sell Carroll and Enrique in January. THen we can start fresh again. Every player signed by Kenny is a complete joke. Suarez does not count, since he was already being sought before Kenny arrived. Loved you kenny, but you really destroyed us.

Kenny signed shelvey, and henderson is quality and didnt deserve to be taken off as, shelvey faded badly. and borini is another player who i cant see what he contributes in quality with the ball? if rodgers wanted a runner he might as well have stuck with dirk.

Except Dirk isn't actually fleet of foot. And in 2 years, when Borini has been scoring goals for us regulariily and yet is just turning 24 and starting to enter his prime, Dirk will be retired.

Kenny gave Sterling his debut and maintained the great youth set up which has now had its management taken apart - who oversaw that.

What kind of thinking can blame someone who hasnt been involved since he left LFc in May for the shocking defensive formations that has resulted in the worst start to LFc season in history. One person responsible - the current manager. LFC was the third hardest team to score against last season. Until BR has one trophy, any trophy, he cant even lick the shiny leather shoes of KD. So far BR is a gamble that isnt paying off. Bolloks to all this 'transition' excuse.

So.. Beating Norwich didn't really effect the team today did it lads? ; )

And by the way some of you saying why am I coming to your site a bit more? Because I am fed up of some of your muppets disturbing us, though I'd give you lot a taste too.

So yeah Well done Udinese, your 15th in the Serie A and have only won 1 game this season but you beat the almighty Liverpool!

Not a great result but its not the end of the world. It's great to see we are getting an end product and using our squad in europe but Sunday is a far more important game and keeping our players fresh for the league. But we need to cut out our silly mistakes at the back.

04 Oct 2012 22:07:04
Before everyone starts with the "Brendan/Downing/Henderson/Pepe etc out" rubbish, lets have a look at the game tonight. It was the original game of 2 halves - we bossed the first and looked very good value for our lead, but Udinese profited on our little mistakes and punished them. That said, I am not going to let this result get in the way of a good performance (despite it being a results-based industry!). I must say that the right hand side looked a bit suspect and almost bereft of ideas at time - neither Johnson nor Downing were entirely confident when they got the ball in the opponent's half, and when they didn't have the ball and the other one was in possession they both were hanging back, waiting for a pass from the other.

Good point was defo Robinson - a cracking display again from the young lad - and the link up play from Joe Allen - he's a good buy, that lad...so as the stereotype goes, "Calm down, calm down" - Rome was not built in a day and with the "new style" passing game Brendan has us playing (beautiful, innit?) little mistakes will be made. But hey, that's football. YNWA.

Fishyred.

Allen doesn't really contribute a lot to either our defense or our attack though, not sure if making short 5 yard passes is enough at the top level - Lucas can do that and break up play, Allen needs to do the same.

Allen isn't lucas, he's filling in for him.. You'll see the best of him when Lucas is back

Hey eds can you explain to me how the NFL tackle on downing not a red card?? Why are our players getting no protection?? {Ed001's Note - it was not dangerous.}

Hmmmm so if someone beats u u can grab him and rugby tackle them?? Hmmm horrendous call IMO easy sending off. {Ed001's Note - I never said I agreed with the decision, I just explained the reason it was not a red.}

Appalling sportsmanship like that deserves a red card IMO.

MIKEY

No way it is a red. Sure it looks bad, but its just a professional foul. It's not like it was a rugby tackle, more just dragging a player down with 2 hands opposed to 1 which you see regularly

Not too down Brendan & the team learning together,Europe is a learning curve udinese are no mugs & a player of di natale's craft & guile is always a danger, jack robinson, coates are young players who did well coates was unfortunate with the o.g. Remember carra scoring 2 when we played utd, shelvey is becoming a monster of midfielder & to those who were slating joe Allen he was class tonight! Jft96
Paisley's genius

You must of watched a different game to me kid. I'm sick of all the excuses! Allen is a class act but he needs to pass forward more & not pass the ball for the sake of passing (sideways/backwards)
You could hear the crowd shouting "attack, attack" because we were too infective upfront. Its all good playing possession football as long as you use the ball better in the last 3rd. I hope it gets better in the new year & we get some attacking players in with a cutting edge.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed the game even though we lost. We are playing proper football. We are going to get better and better. It will take time but the signs are so positive. Brendan has arrived at just the right time to use our wonderful group of young players. We are going to have the most exciting future. We really can compete with Citeh and Chelski just as Barca can beat Real Madrid. Money matters but being smart matters more.

04 Oct 2012 22:07:52
Good performance, delighted for Jack Robinson and Jonjo Shelvey. Borini great movement, pity Johnson never squared it for him in the first half, would have been a tap in.
Whilst I'm on the subject of Johnson, how many goals must he cost us before he gets binned? The only negative for me.
ALB.

I was about to post the same about Johnson mate. We all know what he can do going forward but he's lazy, sloppy, doesn't track back and his positioning is awful.
He costs us far more points than he ever creates. Especially at right back, his supposed best position. He's not bad at lest back but Robinson should be there for me now.
we need Kelly back on the right as soon as he's fit

Couldn't care less about the performance, until we stop conceding 2-3 goals EVERY SINGLE GAME, we are not going to win many games. It seems 5 goals is the requirement if we want to win because its a case of out scoring the opposition. Dreadful.

7/10 Games conceding 2 or more
Udinese 2-3
Norwich 5-2
Man U 1-2
YB 3-5
Arsenal 0-2
Man C 2-2
West Brom 0-3

Other games:
Sunderland 1-1
Hearts 1-1
Hearts 1-0 (only clean sheet)

Explain that then Brendon..........

04 Oct 2012 22:04:36
We are getting punished for our mistakes. When we give the ball away we have only Joe Allen to cover the back 4. Lucas is a very, very big loss to us.

Get well soon Lucas, you are needed...

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

When the commentator says about j henderson to keep his head down and think of lucas and where he he is now and how much liverpool miss him, i say how far have liverpool fallen if he is a major loss.

Couldn't agree more mate, I posted the other day saying he's probably our best player now. He stops us losing and allows other players to win us games.

04 Oct 2012 22:04:17
That certainly has left a bitter taste in my mouth!

We just seem to get punished at every small opportunity.

The better team lost ladies and gents.. No need to worry, we're looking very good, even with our 'B' team.

Henderson should never have come off. Downing looked better tonight.

04 Oct 2012 22:03:52
Unbelievable! Another home defeat, what is going on? I thought Rodgers wanted to turn anfield into a fortress? How's that working out? Lol...... Do we have some sort of curse on us playing at home? Someone tell Rodgers to sell glen Johnson! He's awful!

Johnson had a few lapses, but at left back he's solid.

Johnson isn't the problem, our inability to protect our defence on counters or long balls is the problem.

We'll be fine..

Lee YNWA

04 Oct 2012 22:03:36
I think this is going to be our season... ups and downs but we'll do okay overall and take the youngest team in the premiership forward again next year. Performance tonight was good so we'll take that...

If this is our season... Then Suarez won't be here next season, That's a for sure.

shocking.this tick tack football is geting us nowhere. Shelvey useless borini useless johnson useless gerrard should have stayed at home. Poor manager rodgers won't last long hopefully

So what style of football would you have them play?

Haha oh dear god what a ludicrous post

Don't be too down mate we are on the right track. But keeping players fresh for Sunday is more important.

Mighty reds

Get a life mate, shelvey was really good tonight

Really?? Your post useless!

Were u watching a re run of the arsenal match?!

04 Oct 2012 22:02:21
Carragher has been a great servant to Liverpool but he should retire now. So sad to see a Liverpool legend ending his career like this.
For all of our possession, there's very little penetration. Allen needs to start passing forward & Borini looks like another squad player. Maybe we should of kept our money & let another kid come through.

We really need to be in the market for a quality finished in January, this kind of thing will keep happening until that happens. The possession tells the story of the game more than the goals do with us! Another game dominated, another game lost and the only thing to blame is the lack of conversion of shots (and maybe a bit of misfortune for that boy Coates).

Its a results game and BR is useless at getting results. Good football dont mean s**t wheres the wins. I would rather play bad footy and win games.

Sundays more important.

Mighty reds

You have more chance of winning playing higher quality football when in an inconsistent run I remember houllier's last 2 seasons some of the football was terrible granted we managed to scrape into the top 4 but playing bad & losing to southampton at home was not enjoyable....which was a shame I liked houllier (I liked roy Evans & rafa as well) keep the faith.....jft96
Paisley's genius

Lets put this into perspective, it was the Europa League which is hardly a priority, we had a second string team out, we still scored two goals and were unlucky not to win, never mind draw.
Keep the faith, 1 result in a cup competition doesnt make or break a season.
Sunday v Stoke is much more important.

Jay

Patience. If it were easy, you could do it.

"Europa League hardly a priority..."

It is a gift of extra income from the cup win of last season.

It is likely the only source of serious extra income this season.. Havent you noticed, it is a small squad of 'young' cheaper players now. The budget cannae take big players contracts any longer. Already spent 30m in summer, on a misfiring striker and a passer, already half the net spend of Commoli/KD after the transfer sales revenue.

04 Oct 2012 21:55:09
fine performance, deserved to win really

We'll never win when we concede 3 goals at home . that's 17 goals conceded in 8 games under rodgers

04 Oct 2012 21:49:50
I really don't care how 'pretty' the football is, we're leaking goals like there's no tomorrow , what happened to our defence.... Have we swapped it for 'pretty' football?
Sorry it needs to be sorted

Two words. carra,coates

B team, B defence.

It will be. We are a work in progress... and progress is being made. Liverpool are playing good football. Results will be patchy for a while but it won't be too long before the Liver bird soars again.

Shelvey's not fit enough to lace Clever's boots. Cleverly glides round the pitch moving the ball, shelvey is a knuckle dragger who can lift heavy things.

Shelvey looks well fit to fill Gerrard's boots when the time comes. Sebastian Coates is outstanding again on this first half performance. Looks the part. Much better than Skrtel in my opinion.

Think at Pacheco's age he has either got to be used or moved on.
Doesn't seem to have fulfilled his potential since he made his debut and I think there was offers for him in the summer.
However, saying that, I was impressed with him against West Brom in the Capital One Cup and I would have thought tonight would be a good opportunity for him to impress again.

I just read in marca.com, that tom hinks and gillet refused 2 back BENITEZ 3 millions on FALCAO, so benitez had him on his sight allready, and only 4 3 millions.

Add to this list.

Dani Alves.
David Villa.

Makes you wonder if they had backed him on these three where we would be now.

Still he got us the likes of Sterling, Suso etc so well done to him for that.

Jonesred.

He wanted Silva and jovetic , the fee for the 2 of them combined would have been around 30 million atmost 3-4 years back..apart from the whole host of first teamers that we have now were his bargain buys .. he got suso, sterling, shelvey and restructured our academy all together..
I back BR 100% but cant help but feel Rafa doesnt get 10% of the respect and praise he deserves from the so called best fans in the world ..

Skint, thats where we would be.

This makes me feel physically sick, those Yonks should be ashamed. We could have easily won the league with alves, villa/falcao and torres upfront!

While we always here so much about all the super-star players Benitez wasn't 'backed' to sign, I can't help but wonder how many 'Aquilani's we avoided? How many players was Benitez interested in that are now languishing away in the Spanish second division?

Also, maybe Benitez didn't push hard enough - he spent a lot of money on a lot of dross, maybe they were his preferences while the Falcaos, Silvas etc were second choice/he didn't think they were worth it?

Not having a go at the man, just think it's worth thinking about these things as well!

JammyRed

Most managers have signed some dross....

Liverpool reps always dithered when it came to getting deals done thats why we missed out on some of the best talents in football these past 20 years

Maybe this indicates that he should have a scouting job at Liverpool in the future?

Piledriver

Agree with JammyRed

Not only Aquilani was a waste of money but also Keane. What about that Italian LB who also did not last?

We also have to remember that Benitez was a terrible man manager so it is all good and well that we he wanted Jovetic (who at the time was still very very young) and Silva but if they were treated in anyway like Yossi, Babel, Crouch, Alonso etc then who says the likes of Jovetic and Silva would have made it at Anfield?

Yes Ryan Babel should have had a slightly better attitude but if your manager does not give you a proper run when he signed you for +-12 million and you get used sparingly for matches, play you out of position continously as Babel should have been deployed as a striker from the start but kept on playing in a position which he was struggling with then how is that going to make you want to have a positive attitude? Babel was truely going to be the next Henry when he arrived at Anfield but not with Rafa could not make him shine.

Red4Life

Where would lfc be now if hicks & gillette backed rafa a little more.
unquestionably in the same plight as rangers.
none of these suggestions of possible players matter because we as a club were spiralling into more and more debt so financially it had nothing to do with H&G but more to do with the club being in deep financial trouble (which was aided by rafa's relentless spending and player contract agreements!)

Deals were apparently done for Villa and Silva and they were going to come then the owners revealed that the funds weren't there. That was the summer after we finished second. Imagine what that side would have been like...

Hey Eds, please post this I would like to hear your thoughts, none of my posts get posted. What is your understanding of where we are with the Financial Fair Play coming into the Premier League? Have all clubs agreed? When do you think it may come into the League, and will it benefit Liverpool?
Please read this and post. YNWA {Ed002's Note - FFP in the premier league is some years away. It will likely have little or no impact on the clubs who are in Europe as they will be complying from the UEFA aspects. As for the other clubs, they would be unlikely to be in breach of the rules in the long term. If it were this year, of the teams not in Europe I suspect only Southampton would have been an issue. After the game against Norwich I feel that maybe we have turned a corner...I was one of the first to be dubious about BR but now I feel that he can turn our great club into title contenders! Three opening home games Man U, Man C and Arsenal...Harsh that the fixture computer (or for a better name the Fergie Mac) threw these games at us and we were unlucky against the two mancs...We have some exceptional young players at the club and I feel that with the right guidance they will succeed...1 question though...wheres Adam Morgan? Fowler was banging goals in at he's age as was Owen...Blood him in and watch the goals flow. Other than that I am looking forward to seeing this young team develop.....who agrees?

Think its early to be talking about title contenders but we are definatley heading in the right direction.
I think the clubs transfer policy and playing style is clear to see now and thats what every team needs, a clear direction.
I am optimistic about where we will be in 3 or 4 seasons time but am sure every club who is doing well at the moment (Spurs, Everton etc) is thinking the same thing.
Just hope we stick with BR, keep giving youth a chance and continue with this brilliant style of football.
Would like to see more of Morgan as well, hope he starts tonight.

That exactly the problem this over optimism will turn into a black hole of despair when we lose and we will lose.

Anybody come to this forum afer a loss its like the end is nigh.

The fact that we were beaten by Utd and Arsenal when we should have won and drew with city when we should have won means nothing if you can't convert games you lose or draw

Taking rose tinted glasses to the matter of the Rodgers inept revolution is fooling yourself

Would a realistic expection of moving forward not serve the best interests of all involved?

Why set yourself up for a fall why do that?

Mr. Puss

TITLE CONTENDERS - You are having a laugh. We are just above the drop zone and Rodgers has yet to prove himself. Mid-table finish at best.

The day we stop believing is the day we just stop watching and supporting...and if BR doesn't believe he can get us into the champions league then we and the players might as well take up knitting because quite frankly all of the hours and money we invest into supporting the best club in the world would be bloody pointless... But I guess the name does as it says on the tin eh sour puss !! YNWA Tobiwan

I think the next few games could set us up for a really good season, the four games coming up are all at home and all winnable.
If we beat Stoke and Reading (which we should if we want to improve on last seasons league finish) and beat Anzhi and Udinese we could well be almost qualified for the next round of the Europa League plus in the top half of the table, which isn't too bad considering the run of fixtures we had to start the season.
Plus, our record would then say 7 wins out of 8 games (we are already on 3 wins out of 4).

Jay

It would be interesting to see why and how many in this thread are having a go at insulting me through my name, I can helped why I am called after all there was a boy named Sue.

I have attacked no one merely stating an opinion that this forum is full of over optimism which soon turns to despair and a more middle of the road approach rather than the extreme high and lows encountered would be more prudent and you would still be a fan of LFC it would not be treason!

I love this site, if you say the team is ****e then you get told to support someone else, if you do show support or a bit of optimism, you get told your living in cloud cuckoo loud! Classic.

Does know well else think that someone who calls themselves 'Sour Puss' is just deliberately trying to wind us all up? Maybe don't rise to the bait next time!

JammyRed

I am not trying to wind anyone up!

Merely trying to point out the manic highs and lows from those that are over optimistic and then their optimism turns into depair when things go wrong as they have wound up their optimism past breaking point.

What wroong with an even keel?

Right now I don't think Stewart Downing should be anywhere near LFC's starting eleven. I'd sooner play with ten men than an eleven featuring Downing. The lad adds absolutely nowt. In fact, his presence hinders and sets us back.

He got 35+ games last season and this season, too, he's had fairly enough chances to put it together, has had support from his colleagues, manager and fans. We gave him everything he ever needed to be a success here, but it simply has not worked out.

And at 28, no improvement is in sight.
It's all sad, though. I really like Stewie. He's a genuinely good sportsman and a fine human too. He's always represented himself with respect and dignity, both on and off the field.

I'd love to see him enjoying his game again. But I'm afraid it won't be at LFC. He just doesn't have the 'big club' mentality and personality.
So best we quickly cut our losses and sell and move on.

BR did suggest that he could try him at LB, an idea which I supported at the time. I'm not sure if Brendan still feels that way, but if so, go for it. If it works, great, if it doesn't, sell. I'm still convinced we should get about £12m for him.

I'm not particularly inclined to talk transfers, money and all that, but I think we'll have a good summer.
The possible sales of Carroll, Enrique, Downing (fairly high earners) and Spearing could bring in a minimum of £30m. The owners may also throw in £15m/£20m. Consider also that we have significantly reduced the wage bill and we'll have slashed our losses to about £30m.

Now as it is, the one position I'd fill is DM. That Celtic lad Wanyama has lots of promise and would do a better job of deputising for Lucas than any of Allen or Hendo. He could add that defensive shield we sorely miss in Lucas absence.

He's young, apt for our game, wouldn't cost a fortune and would be on fairly low wages. January would be a good time to bring him in. Give him four months to bed in and prep himself for what will be a massive 2013/14 season.

I doubt if we hold any interest, though. But I'm there should be other similar options, young, talented, inexpensive, low wages.
This is the only area I'd improve January.

The issue of a striker has been greatly exaggerated, perhaps myself I've been guilty of it at times.
I still back Fabi to come good and get his 15+ league goals.
Suarez, as often unclinical as he is, will bag some important goals, more so now with the way we playing and with the likes of Sterling, Assaidi, Sahin and Suso creating clear cut chances aplenty.

There's also Shelvey, Gerrard and Sahin, all very good goalscores.
I said when joined that Sahin will get us 10+ league goals and just as many assists. I'm still of that view. Assaidi, too, looks a decent bet goals-wise.

Jonno will also typically chip in with 4, 5, as will Ninja and Dagger.
We should also not forget young Yesi. He looks a heck of a player. He'll get his chances, and with the tons of chances we create, you certainly bank on him bagging a few.
I thought he was impressive at WBA and very unlucky not to get one or two.
He's settled in nicely and will only get better and better as he gets more games.

So I think we'll manage on this front. No worries.
And then summer we can at getting in another forward, not because our frontline will rubbish, no. Just to increase and improve the squad's depth.

And then replace Downing and Enrique and we'll be good to go.
No revolution, no bloated squad and bloated wage bill.
Just a mere tweaking and putting together a compact squad with reasonable depth, largely young talented, competitive team on reasonable to low wages.

I think that's what BR and the boardroom envision. And I, I'm with them all the way.

I know people are thrilled with the footy they are seeing now.
But it's the start of next season which has me tickled.
The team as whole will be significantly attuned to the new philosophy and identity, Suso, Wisdom and Sterling would likely have had 40 odd games each (EPL, UEFA, COC, FA), there'd likely 2 or more Sahin-esque technically supreme new arrivals and BR and the lads will have a full preseason together.

If the lads have been able to on board so well our new ways in just a few months, how frightening will we be next season?
If Suso, Sterling and Wisdom have made the impressive impact that they have, being the fledglings that they are, how frightening will they be next season when they have 25+ EPL games under their belts?

It's a mouth-watering prospect that has me licking my lips everytime I think about it.

Lastly, just want to congratulate my 2nd favourite team, Borussia Dortmund, for such great display last night. A treat. Massive respect to Klopp and Zorc. Pity they didn't get all three, were well worth them.

Madrid and Barca will be the ony genuine threats for them, imo. I'd back them to have little difficulty beating the rest, no less the English sides. But Arsenal may prove a tricky proposition, which is why I want BVB/Arsenal final.
We'll see.

BARNEY

What about Cole?
I know what you mean about Stewie but I hate to give up on players so I'll reserve judgement untill BR has had a bit more time to work on the way the team plays.

What exactly has Downing done for humanity to make him so fine? Sick to death of these ridiculous one liners when the author writing it knows Jack rubbish what the person their writing about is really like.

I'm a bit worried that our top young talent will b took from us to the highest bidders with our lack of spending other clubs might see that as a chance to get them wat u guys think nice 1 ynwa JON96 {Ed002's Note - What lack of spending are you referring to? Net spending by Liverpool this summer was in the top ten clubs world wide.}

No oil baron spending like!

The poster must be a kid, his logic baffles me, he thinks just cause we are LFC we should have bags of money lying around, what sugar coated world does he live in?

Sugar coated world great place to live

Everyone is happy and smiley

So different here!

With rodgers being the saviour to some the devil to others

FSG being great owners to some and the pits to others

With Gerrard being great to only a few and the root of all evil to most others

With Carra being the devil incarnate to 99%

Ah yes opinions, opinions

Whats logic got to do with it?

Logic is limited.....kurt godel

sahin would probably cost a lot even if we could convince him to leave madrid. he has 4 or 5 years to run on his current contract

Who cares? If we still like Sahin at the end of the season we'll make a good offer for him at value and wages in sync with our other players. If he wants it, he takes it. If not, cya, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Look, we're building something here under Rodgers for the long term and we've only just started. The average age of our team selections so far has been 23. We have a plethora of under 19 yr olds of high quality coming in to the team and their own. We're still establishing which of our current players who will make the final cut. There'll be more. We faces coming in. Some experienced and some potential. If Sahin is part of that then so be it. If not, we'll buy, rent, or groom a n other to take his place.

We need to stop the whole mentality that we one player or another. We need a team, a system, and a long term plan to get back to where we need to be.

SpudRed

True but we paid 35mill for Carrol, 20mill for Downing and 16mill for Henderson, So after a year on loan with us the owners will get to see how good he is and would probabley sanction a decent sum of money for him if he plays like a 20-25mill player for us.

The owners (despite what some beleive) have never shyed away from big money transfers and TBF they still spend 15mill on Allen after 1 good season at top flight (kinda like Adam) after being burned by DC sighnings the windows before, So i beleive if he wants to join and we want him FSG will make the money availible.

FYI not comparing Allen to Adam just saying Adam had 1 good seaon in PL before we signed him FSG could of been concerned Allen would turn out to be just like him (over hyped, Over priced) I know Allen is 10 times better than Adam.

UCCM

If Sahin doesn't stay we can loan another top player for a while. Or buy one.

Oh my god!! LOL
Don't let let the door hit ya where the lord split ya!

Priceless...

hi eds
is real madrid really interested in suso and can LFC fend off real madrid and others by quoting unrealistic prices etc ? watching shaktars champions league match henrik mkhitaryan was class has liverpool moved for him?
starred {Ed063's Note - I don't know if they are interested - he rejected Real and Barca in order to sign for Liverpool in the first place and he is now getting regular games in the first team. I don't see why Real would now interest him where he wouldn't get a game}

Agree with ed,mourinho would be unlikely to play him if was signed, he likes established players he can put straight into a team,he is not really a builder & real Madrid have the galactico policy which is not really conducive to the development of young players,it is only a few that come through...

ive read that joe cole and downing could play against udinese , i think it would be unwise and unfair on the kids who have been playing well for us , in the end they will say sod this im off , im playing well and then getting dropped , if i was assaidi , sterling or suso and was dropped for downing , henderson and cole i would not want to stay at the club , i think BR is doing a great job and will turn us around and we will start winning , but to drop inform players for crap players then is could backfire on him , lets play our strongest team, score the goals and then bring the poor players on ,thats if we are taking this comp serious , or maybe the prem is our main target , either way downing as proved he is not good enough and the youngsters have proved they are better than him ,

JFT96

But if they were dropped then they play against stoke?

Kaizer

Downing has done okay under Rodgers system and Cole did well in the French league against opposition about the level of these Europa game. Assaidi will likely start if Suso doesn't. If Suso, Sterling, and Wisdom don't start then it's not because they are dropped it is because they are being rotated in order to play them against Stoke.

The Europa is nice and I want us to do well in it and go deep into the final rounds. However, this is the group stages and we already have an away win in the bag. The league games are so very much more important at this stage of the season and we need our best players fit and full of running for these league games in order to chalk up a nice winning streak and set the tone.

There are still plenty of Europa group stage games left to qualify even if we don't get a result in this game. There is also the league and Fa cup where the youngsters will get more starts.

Eds any news on the contract situations for Suso and Sterling, don't wanna lose these two. The future of Liverpool.

PD6 {Ed063's Note - Well Rodgers said today that they have opened negotiations with several of the talented youngsters - I'm sure those two are at the top of the list}

Can anyone clarify where we stand with Walcott and Sturridge?

Last i heard Walcott was pressing Arsenal for a striker role and Chelsea were asking too much for Sturridge.

Do we still have an interest in any of them or has our position changed with the injection of youth in our team?

from the many times i have seen balotelli taking a penalty, i have to say he is one of the best. nerves of steel, no fear, just calm all the way. in terms of taking penalty only though. look at his penalty against Dortmund for example. so relaxed.

Kaizer

He's a great player but could be even better. It would never happen but I would love him at Liverpool despite his track record. In fact, there aren't many players at other clubs who I would love to see here but Balotelli is one.
