If Spurs win tomorrow they will be just two points behind us and we head to OT for our next game. We ll need to beat UTD on 14th else we ll drop out from top 4 as other 4 clubs have easier fixture.

03 Jan 2017 22:20:35
You don't win anything in January mate.
It's where you finish, not where you are after 21 games.

03 Jan 2017 22:21:11
United have been playing awful. It has completely gone under the radar that their 6 game run has included at least 3 offside goals, Rojo getting away with a blatant straight red, a lucky comeback at home to relegation fodder, and the opposition receiving a completely outrageous red card.

11 days break until then (as the kids should face Plymouth) so we should have a fully fit team out at OT. I can't see them living with us myself. Although I would not be surprised to see Mourinho bottle it as usual and play a back six. Hopefully at home they have a bit more ambition and try to give us a game.

If we do (god forbid) lose the game, then we'll still have 17 games left to play and I personally won't be going into melt down.

03 Jan 2017 22:36:29
MKS absolutely spot on imo.

Exactly my thoughts. They've been let off the hook quite a bit the last few games and the wins haven't been at all convincing, I think a lot of people may have seen the results but they don't reflect the bigger picture. Before that I thought they were starting to look decent though.

I still expect it to be a very hard game. If we have Couts/ Hendo and Milner back by then I think we should have enough to overpower them. Need our stars to turn up big time like Phil did last time round.

03 Jan 2017 22:38:37
oh dear. bro we'll need to beat manU no matter what happens tomorrow.

03 Jan 2017 23:29:08
Harry, stop yielding to panic as it doesn't suit you. MK nailed it. Klopp tries to win any game he plays no matter where it is played and Utd is no different and he owns Mou in his head to head games against him so if anything, he should be scared of Klopp. Had he yielded to panic, would we be leading the head to head table vs our rivals or would we have beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton on their own patch? We'll b fine regardless of the result.

04 Jan 2017 00:39:52
The utd game is just like any other, we need to go into it aiming to win, simple as that.

04 Jan 2017 01:21:14
Agree with MK but united have a hx of winning ugly so we can't take the lightly. They are not playing great but they showing signs of promise unfortinately. The top six is going to be tight. If couts and matip can come back and stay healthy I think we will get top 4.maybe even (won't jinx us)

04 Jan 2017 02:45:22
If you guys wait til April to start whining, it will be too late. As fans we have the right to start whining when the team is not performing to expectation NOW.

{Ed001's Note - no we don't. Whining is childish, spoilt brats. Criticism is different.}

04 Jan 2017 04:50:06
MK

We have Saints away on Wednesday 3 days before the UTD game which is a League Cup Semifinal.

04 Jan 2017 06:43:27
As a United fan I spend most of my time over on our pages but i do enjoy reading the the mojority of the other teams pages especially this one. Within one sentence of that post I knew it was MK Scouser before id evenue seen his name. Reeks of over confidence and excuses. The fact of the matter is, we've had some awful decisions go against us in the games leading up to our recent run of wins. I wouldn't use them as excuses when we lost/ drew and I wouldn't use them as excuses when we win.

The fact is, a month ago we were languishing way off the pace and not getting results. Now we are team playing with style, cohesion, ruthlessness and flair. You can paint it any way you want but we're not 6th because of luck. Likewise, yous are not 2nd because of luck. Thump your chest all you want but right now we're just getting into our stride.

Yous have played some beautiful attacking football but there's a reason Klopp hasn't won anything in 7 years. And there's a reason he finished 8th last year and lost 2 cup finals. Klopp is just like the big bad wolf who ran out of breath when he huffed and puffed, very much like all his teams. Your bench against Sunderland was laughable for a team with Championship aspirations, considering you've only had a few injuries.

I don't think the match in 10 days will be an easy one to call. Yous always up your game against bigger teams. We've had our worst start to the season in decades and your lot are talking title challenge. We've been utter tripe for the majority of this season and yous have been playing out of your skin, yet just past the halfway point, we could be 2 points behind. Funny old game this football.

04 Jan 2017 07:08:51
Mumbles

Easy man easy, If you loose then you ll find closer to Everton than Chelsea.

04 Jan 2017 07:35:52
Mumbles AKA mouriniho wow
Up the pool.

04 Jan 2017 08:56:18
Mumbles - that match against Sunderland we had Coutinho, Matip, Henderson, Ings and Grujic all injured. A few? Put Lucas and Moreno in there and that's a bench - and one of if not the best benches in the league!

When your fans are still celebrating winning multiple games by offside goals, I wouldn't talk about over confidence or style and flair. All your style and flair so far has shown is that refs aren't paying attention!

04 Jan 2017 09:06:04
Mumbles I hear the Sam tripe every year from Man U fans were playing crap but we are still up there blah blah blah, no doubt about it you've caught back up but it's January let's see what happens at the end of the season.

04 Jan 2017 09:30:37
Mumbles what happens when the Europa kicks back in and you have to play Thursday and a sunday? Everyone seems to forget this run of games is because you ain't playing twice a week. Out of 12 points over the Christmas period we have took 10 and played Everton and man city it was always plausible we could drop a hell of a lot more points as for having a pop at klopp we both know who has the better manager but you won't admit it seen as though he's Liverpool's manager . What would you rather watch either playing heavy metal attacking football like a certain red nose used to play or boring boring mourinho with any sniff of loosing pulls a back 9 and just hoofing the ball away . how much have you spent last summer again? Pogba cost more than all of our transfers in the summer and we have a solid CB which we got for free btw a YOUNG winger who pops up with a goal and can only grow more these transfers fixed problems in our team where your defence still looks shakey your midfield can still be cut open like a knife through butter and if zlatan is injured who do you have to go up top for a team who spent nearly 200 million now tell me who's got the better manager? mourinho has never had to rebuild a squad he's always had the spending power and half a squad to work with where yourselves where in tatters when he come in and when he leaves I see it been the same just with a bigger chunk of cash missing out of your bank balance.

04 Jan 2017 10:37:55
Lads just don't bite. Mumbles lost all credibility when he said the ref mistakes are not excuses for their victories. Because of course, playing 75 minutes against 10 men has absolutely no advantages to it. Nor does having an offside goal flicked on by a handball allowed to stand, apparently.

04 Jan 2017 11:19:53
Having watched man u the last few games they are playing much better. I still feel personally they are looking to ibra to ignite them almost every game which is way too much of an over reliance but when they get going they have been playing well.
And mk his point was they might have been unlucky with decisions early in the season and as most say they get balanced throughout the season so they might have got good decisions but so do half the teams each week debatably although the ref last night in the arsenal game had a notably fantastic game imo.

All that being said I think man u back 4 can still be got at and if we as almost is the usual now overpreform against the big sides I think we could have another magical 1-4!

03 Jan 2017 23:31:14
Just something to bear in mind guys.

We finished last season on 60 points, 16 wins, 10 losses as well.

We're only halfway through the fixture list pretty much and we're not a millions miles away from that point tally.

It's been a great season so far and I expect a lot more smiles before its played out. 13 wins and 2 losses at this point of the season makes for good reading for where we are as a club.

I know Ed002 likes to a have a little chuckle about the 'transition' (which is warranted tbf, have to give him that) . But in terms of how pesimistic and borderline depressed I was towards the end of the Rodgers era. to think we've come this far is enough to perk any reasonable supporter up surely?

We're 2nd in the league and the buzz around the club is nuts. Sometimes i find myself having to pinch myself that Klopp actually joined the club if I think back to seasons past.

Anyway, my point is. cheer up :)

04 Jan 2017 12:17:10
welcome mumbles,

i don't think I've seen you on here this season until now?

a slightly different spin on your wind up. if you lose against us you'll be 8 points behind despite winning 6 games on the bounce.

you should of held your tongue until the game because if you lose you look a right fence post.

04 Jan 2017 13:36:53
Mumbles must be losing his mind knowing that even having won 6 in a row (with a plethora of pathetic ref decisions in their favor), Utd is still 5 points behind LFC. I would be losing it as well if I was him. As for the game in 10 days, we will be ready cos there`s no one Klopp like to beat the most than Mou as their head to head record suggests (3 wins 2 draws and a loss for Klopp) .

04 Jan 2017 20:32:30
He is right though. Decisions might have gone his way in last few matches but they weren't at beginning of the season. And despite what I think of him, Mourinho has got them playing a much better style of footy than the turgid rubbish they were forcing their fans to watch last year. So Im not surprised the ManU fans are feeling better about their team now. Let them. We should be concentrating on our team. And we've got 2 game to go before we have to worry about ManU.

03 Jan 2017 18:58:04
Eds, any truth in the article of Matip having to report to Cameroon camp next week? and the possible consequences should he not? Thanks.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - This was dealt with weeks ago - they "expect" him although he has said he isn't going, they will bleat about it, nothing will happen (at least not without a court case).}

03 Jan 2017 19:25:42
Am I correct in saying if the player doesn't want to represent his country then there's nothing that can force him?
At least he didn't do a Stephen Ireland.

{Ed002's Note - That is generally correct - unless he (or the club) uses an imaginary an injury as an excuse.}

03 Jan 2017 20:09:51
Matip is injured and hasn't played for Liverpool for a number of weeks, so I really think they are clutching at straws.

03 Jan 2017 20:58:58
They are just posturing for the sake of it. Nothing will happen and they themselves, know it.

03 Jan 2017 21:13:31
I think half of it is the media making nonsense out of nothing as per usual, but what do I know.

03 Jan 2017 22:48:51
I thought they could stop him playing for his club for the length of time the national team is still in the competition.

But maybe with Matip having been out injured for a number of weeks it may be different.

03 Jan 2017 23:30:30
They can't do a thing and they know it especially if the player refused to go or especially if it is injured.

04 Jan 2017 08:57:37
If you could be forced to represent a country then logically players like Zaha would have no choice who they play for - the first country with a claim could call them up and they would have to be tied in there forever.

03 Jan 2017 18:56:28
To put the season so far in perspective. After the city game, we had the most number of points we have ever had after 19 games of any premiership season. In Klopp I trust.

Believable13 Unbelievable2

03 Jan 2017 21:01:04
True, Swansea-red, BUT with the comments I read on here and on other fan blogs after every negative result, you would think that the facts you just posted were made up or nonexistent or just fake news.

03 Jan 2017 21:19:12
Well said. In the last 2 seasons we were in 7th/ 8th place after 20 games, on 29/ 30 points. It's pretty obvious we're in a much better place now, some 'fans' just don't get it though. For me, 7 points from 9 over Xmas is actually quite good!

03 Jan 2017 21:56:43
Exactly, even when we finished 2nd in 2014 we only had I think 37 points and were in 4th or 5th if i am not mistaken after 19 games. We are in a great place, and the club is moving forward, we are playing amazing football. The result yesterday, was disappointing, but we didn't lose, and every single team will drop points. Arsenal have dropped points tonight by drawing with Bournemouth, this is the most competitive league in the world, and we are playing the best football, we need just sit back and enjoy, i for one am not thinking anything about the title, not even top 4. we do much better by looking at the next game, the next game for us is Plymouth in the cup. let's not think the world is over after 1 game, or that we will win the league after 1 game also. One thing we need to learn from our last time in a title race is to stay grounded, not get carried away, I felt that we did when we played on saturday against city. there was a calmness to our game. Sunderland is always a tough game, especially when we were missing a few players and tired from playing only 48 hours before hand. But still we did not lose. We need remember where we were when Klopp took over to where we are now and see the difference. let's stop slating our players for one bad game or thinking the world will implode because we drew. Just sit back and enjoy the ride Klopp is taking us on. YNWA.

04 Jan 2017 00:45:25
Kevlaw, yours is the most brilliant post I`ve ever read in quite a while. Take a bow, Monsieur!

04 Jan 2017 04:04:13
Well said Kevlaw. you don't win or lose the league by any one result and yet our emotions (myself included) tend to swing based on each performance and that's reflected in the comments. We can all learn to take each result in our stride better, appreciate that we won't be always able to perform at our peak, and appreciate just how far we've come in the last 18 months.

04 Jan 2017 13:42:44
That`s the spirit, Zimbo. I love it. We are SIXTEEN points better at this stage last season. We are the best attack, 2nd best Good, most points taken off other members of the top 6 (11), most chances created, least shots on target conceded (149), under Klopp we are undefeated in the PL vs Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and City. Even Rafa couldn`t manage that at any period in his tenure. I mean, the list goes on and on so let`s just learn from each negative result and always remember who and where we were before Klopp came to us and turned us into believers again. Up the Pool!

03 Jan 2017 14:13:05
as gutted as we all are about yesterday, we did not lose the match and we still have plenty to play for, its amazing how with 1 draw we won't be winning the title, yet if had won we would have been the real deal, I hope mane has a good tournament with Senegal and comes back to us fully fit and ready to carry on where he left off, minus that brainfreeze yesterday he has been brilliant for us, the good news is that our next match is vs man utd at least no Liverpool player will be short of motivation for that clash, we must not let yesterday become the start of a spectacular collapse, we are still in a wonderful position and we still have plenty to play for, one final thought for klopp, trust your young players more they are just as capable of playing in the EPL as they are the cup matches.

Believable8 Unbelievable7

03 Jan 2017 14:47:51
Yesterday's was crying out for Lucas instead Can got picked and let's be honest he could have played a lot better. So hopefully Can will learn from his mistakes and Klopp will see that Can is not a DM. Anyway Red's onwards and upwards.

03 Jan 2017 15:31:39
it was lucas that gave the foul away that led to the pen not can. and you don't how the game would have gone with lucas starting. for me he all ways gives fouls away in dangerous places. but some players can do know wrong.

03 Jan 2017 15:35:11
Can gave many fouls away in dangerous positions. The fact is Mane just had a brain lapse and it cost us some points. It happens. Everyone calm down and stop pointing the finger.

03 Jan 2017 16:42:47
Mane has won us enough points this season. think we should forgive him for that one 😀

We desperately need a bit of grit in the middle. For me a strong DM is a must if we want to challenge for titles.

03 Jan 2017 17:02:29
Can't blame everything on Mane. He did score the goal and the only player who looked like scoring one yesterday. The goal was coming by the way we were playing yesterday!

03 Jan 2017 17:50:04
Absolutely. Lucas gave away the foul which finally led to the goal. Lucas is no world beater as some seems to think on here. He is just an average player and this is why he is not in the starting eleven. This is why klopp is willing to let him leave in the transfer window. He may be a nice guy etc etc and hence the man love from many of u but player wise he is just average.

03 Jan 2017 18:33:31
How does Lucas get blamed for a foul he didn't commit? Anywho I see the simpletons are out in force again finding any simple target to blame.

03 Jan 2017 18:57:41
It wasn't a foul in the 1st place.

03 Jan 2017 18:58:08
Can is like Lallana last season: caught in possession too often. For a DM, that's not ideal. He has potential, but he has to move the ball quicker instead of trying too often to beat a man.

Lucas has seen better years, but I don't see how he was at issue. That was a pretty generous call.

03 Jan 2017 21:02:43
How the ref gave that call but inexplicably missed the demolition job on Studge a few minutes before that, is what is doing my head in.

03 Jan 2017 21:32:36
Dodnt we concede by 2 penalties? And dominate most of the match?

Why was can so bad?

It was a draw. move on you fixkle lot.

If anything mane mistakimg him self for a gk was the biggest thing from yesterday, yet hardly mentioned.

03 Jan 2017 21:35:47
Good call Hamilton and very true.

03 Jan 2017 22:55:29
Absolutely no way was that a foul by cann outside the box.

It was a perfect intervention using his body to shield the ball.

Poor performance by the referees.

I don't see why the officials don't have to come out afterwards and answer for their performance to the media.
It's the not knowing that wind people up.

04 Jan 2017 00:51:58
Spot n Barry and Dermot. This is why Klopp said he didn`t know what to say or what the players could have done in his post match comments and can you blame him? The double standards alone n both ref incidents is enough to put your fist through the wall. Now as for the WH - Utd game, that was just daylight robbery.

03 Jan 2017 13:55:11
Happy new year all,

Just wondering if Eds or someone can update me with regards Sakho? Is he not getting a looking due to the shenanigans in the summer or does Klopp just not rate him? Personally I still rate the lad.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is no update - try the search engine.}

03 Jan 2017 14:42:15
You still rate him? I don't rate his attitude, sooner he's gone the better. He doesn't deserve to be in a side like Liverpool.

03 Jan 2017 13:25:17
As I've heard not to expect much business in terms of incomings in January, and the only real outgoing being sakho possibly. I know it's early yet but is there anything about the club tracking any big deals in the summer window? Or even any departures? Cheers.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Clubs look at players without constraints of timescales and Liverpool have continued to scout players regardless of what happens this month. Much will be driven by the desire to make a few changes and then address any unplanned departures.}

03 Jan 2017 13:44:15
Cheers ed. Heard something about us scouting the Norwich youngster Jacob Murphy, anything in that?

{Ed002's Note - Yes, that is correct and there is also interest from Spurs.}

03 Jan 2017 18:19:27
Ha, do we share a scouting department? If not, I want the credit for the financial savings it would make!

03 Jan 2017 13:00:59
Hi eds happy new year to one and all .
Bad day at the office yesterday, all to apparent and firmilar slow play preventing us from breaking down Sunderland more than we did . Firstly missed Hendo unbelievably, Can is too slow and wasteful in possession which allows teams as much time as required to set out their stall defensively, I like the young lad but I don't think his reading of the game is all it should be and I don't think he'll ever get there to be honest you can't teach pace and although his reading of the game may improve he is still too slow to adapt to Klopps pressing style of play . Defensively we are still very suspect and without Maltip (what a piece of business superb player ) at the helm anything can happen, Lovern has improved but Kalvan is extremely slow like Can and prone to making silly mistakes . Sturridge injured again surprise surprise what's new guess we won't be moving him on this window no doubting his ability but attitude and work ethic or lack off beggers belief sometimes . I personally don't think he is a Klopp like player, basically what I'm trying to say in a nut shell is we have maybe 11/ 12 great players that play extremely well in Klopps preferred system but outside of them we lack real quality in our squad and our fast paced pressing game suffers as a result . Do you see Klopp addressing some of this in this window or do you think he will persist with what he has and re access in the summer sorry for harping on a bit but I think this is all too apparent and needs to be addressed if we want to fufill our potential and reach the holy grail that has illuded us for far too long .
Cheers and keep up the super work.

Believable1 Unbelievable11

{Ed001's Note - how on earth can you question Sturridge's attitude and work ethic? He has had injuries that he is struggling with, but he has worked damn hard to get over them. His attitude has been excellent, he has not thrown his toys out of the pram despite the crap in the media.}

03 Jan 2017 13:19:55
The only way to know the quality of your bench is by giving them chances. The bench struggles coz they hardly get a sniff on the system of first eleven.

03 Jan 2017 13:33:07
Was going to do a post on Studge but will reply to this instead. Klopp clearly rates Studge, every time he gets fit he brings him back into the team either as a starter or a first reserve. People try to say he's 'not a Klopp player' but the team does better with him in it and Studge has scored plenty of goals for Klopp.

This season alone he's on a goal every 101 minutes, that's stupendously good. The only reason it's questioned is because the goals are clustered in the league cup.

The simple fact is that when he's fit he's brilliant. What everyone forgots is that the club employs experts to evaluate his injuries. If he was a lame duck he'd have been replaced by now. Klopp has faith in him, the doctors back him and he's still scoring goals for fun.

03 Jan 2017 13:13:12
Yes ed Sturridge is a quality player and the media will have a go at him people for it . It's a easy cheap shot at someone at people need not to believe the media all the time.

03 Jan 2017 15:29:07
''I like the young lad but I don't think his reading of the game is all it should be and I don't think he'll ever get there to be honest you can't teach pace and although his reading of the game may improve he is still too slow to adapt to Klopps pressing style of play''

Tony Adams showed you don't need pace to be a ''decent'' player, If he can get his timings when to go close, when to st etc right, he should be ok.

03 Jan 2017 13:13:31
Cheers eds for the quick response maybe I'm being harsh on Sturridge no doubting his ability and that he has worked hard to get back fit and fair play to him I am just stating that he doesn't put in the shift that is required by the system we play, I think we are missing the whole point of the post and that was the lack of real quality in the squad and if it would be addressed .
Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - but there is no lack of real quality in the squad. We have quality, expensively acquired quality, we also have some grafters, and a lot of youngsters who need to be developed through playing time. Try patience.}

03 Jan 2017 18:04:57
Your probably right Ed patience is what is required I do realise that their is a abundance of young raw talent at the club that just needs to be nurtured and given time hopefully this will all come to good and we'll be able to reap the rewards but do u think we might possibly add maybe one addition to the squad and if so where do u think is the most critical position to be added too . Sorry if the original post was terribly critical of Sturidge it's just frustrating for us all and the lad himself that he is having a horror time of it with injuries
Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - it is not just the young talent. Sturridge needs time on the pitch to get his form back. Origi needs it to develop as a player. Firmino needs to keep playing to develop teamwork with the others. Henderson is still learning his role. I could go on. A small squad is beneficial to winning trophies, which is why the top managers work with one.}

04 Jan 2017 02:25:46
Sound response Ed
Cheers point taken on board.

{Ed001's Note - thanks mate, glad you thought so.}

03 Jan 2017 12:32:51
Whilst it's certainly true that we could have won yesterday I think that's only an excuse if we feel hard done by the result and I don't think that was the case yesterday. I will concede that there's no guarantee that a different starting 11 would have done better but I was very surprised by Klopp's selection and feel he made an error making only one change. Regardless of how fit our players are there is no way you can be fresh playing two games in 48 hours.

Klopp's realistic options (beyond Sturridge) to come in were Moreno, Lucas, Origi, A-A, Ejaria and Stewart. Ed1 thinks Ojo isn't ready yet but he started 6 games for the u-23s in December so I'm surprised he's not even making the bench yet. Milner going off at half time suggests he shouldn't have started, we know Moreno's got too many flaws but he's experienced and his pace brings a weapon to our left flank, he should have come in. Hendo's absence could have seen Stewart or Lucas deputize and if there was ever a game to give one of them a start in their natural position this was it, I think Klopp's lost faith in the pair. Origi should feel most hard done by, over the last month or so he's shown his best form for Liverpool so not to start against either City or Sunderland must be hugely disappointing for him. A-A and Ejaria are very raw so I'm not surprised they weren't used, A-A is behind the only player who categorically is fit enough to manage the Christmas schedule and Ejaria is probably not ready to start in the league but the fact that neither came off the bench is, again, very surprising.

Personally I would have played Migs; Moreno, Klavan, Lovren, Clyne; Stewart, Can, Lallana; Mane, Origi, Studge. With the plan to bring on Firmino and Wiji if things were going badly and Ejaria and Lucas if they were going well. We may have still dropped points but what's the point in having a squad if you're not going to use it.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

03 Jan 2017 12:44:28
Didn't get to see the game yesterday, but all teams are in the same boat regarding games played over Christmas.

Other teams have managed to perform over the period.

How many changes did sunderland make from there game the other day?

03 Jan 2017 13:50:52
sunderland were fully fresh LAVERS as they did bugger all vs burnley whilst we were in combat with man city, I agree with other posters we should have freshened up our line up yesterday, having said all that the team we put out should have beat sunderland, we sadly pressed the self destruct button and paid the penalty ( no pun intended)

03 Jan 2017 13:52:17
Irrelevant Lavers. Tiring legs is an equalising factor. It will make the game more scrappy and affects players with quality more than the scrappers who take heavy touches and play lazy passes as a norm anyway. Besides Sunderland had a longer break than us in between all 3 festive fixtures.

Putney, I agree with you on some part of your post. However, I disagree with some part of it. First off, it doesn`t matter what Klopp did per his selection cos if we didn`t win, the geniuses in hindsight (not you, of course) would second guess his choices till the cows come home so to me, that is already baked in and Klopp made the decision to play the same team and go for the win which I applaud so to me, there`s no point rehashing the whole selection theme.

Secondly judging by the circumstances, I think we played very well as we created chances, dominated possession in their final third, had 15 shots on target (Mannone was MOTM) and gave up 3 measly shots on target, all of which Migs comfortably saved so that perf was good enough for me with no rest and 44 hours of preparation after a mammoth effort 9physically and mentally) from the City game, before the game.

Thirdly, it`s not about not using the squad for me. He said he consulted the players and the medical team to see if the guys could start the game and they said that they felt good and then he trusted them (which is what he can do) and went with them. To me, it was not a mistake and it was always going to be a gamble regardless so you have to take the good with the bad cos hindsight reasoning solves nothing, in the end.

03 Jan 2017 13:13:11
Just checked, Sunderland made 3 changes. The other 12 teams who played Sat and Mon made at least 2 changes with most making 4 or more.

03 Jan 2017 13:14:52
There's a difference mate we played city they get hammered against burnley so the give up at 3-1 . We could not take it easy against city.

03 Jan 2017 13:15:25
Putney

Brilliant post. Makes so much sense.

03 Jan 2017 15:43:07
Hamilton, that last part I have a problem with. It's not the players responsibility to pick themselves, it's Klopp's. Saying that they told him they were OK sounds dangerously like an excuse.

03 Jan 2017 17:09:39
Hamilton

A manger is actually paid for his hindsight and nothing more. It's his team after all and he should take the blame / credit. Simple as.

03 Jan 2017 17:16:24
I actually agree with you on that last point, Putney. If you read my post, you would see that I said that he trusted them to get the job done. Trusting them was his decision as they had rarely failed him collectively and our record this season backs this up. My point was that you can`t know if a decision is a mistake until the outcome happens. That is the part NO manager on earth can control so one`s desire to use that as a stick to beat him with is what I deem unfair and dishonest.

There is a reason why the expression (It is what it is) exists as in, what`s done is done and using hindsight is pointless cos no one knows the outcome before it arrives hence, the reason why I never refer to it in any of my comments. Why? Cos had we earned the win, this conversation is non existent.

03 Jan 2017 18:58:41
"A manager is paid for his hindsight". Is he also paid to tell the future, in your opinion? You are indeed one of a kind.

03 Jan 2017 11:01:10
Imo these 2 cup games have come at the right time. Squad rotation will come in. Ed am I right in thinking Couts Hendo Matip should be back for the Utd game?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The club have yet to say.}

03 Jan 2017 11:30:06
Hope so, these three would be a massive boost and give us our best chance of nullifying Ibrahimavic, Mkhitaryan, Pogba.

03 Jan 2017 10:19:47
Happy new year!

A draw was hard to take yesterday but got to suck it in a move forward.

Worried about our CBs still and think one could come in this Jan but shouldn't be a caulker signing like last year.

Any cbs you known of us having interest in?

Promes seems an odd signing but kinda makes sense as it would add depth for next season for CL or Europa.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has not made any approaches in respects of CBs.}

03 Jan 2017 14:41:59
The CB`s are fine as it is these same CB`s that have conceded 3 goals (two of which were penalties in one game) in 5 games (3 clean sheets) . They have also been well protected by the FB`s midfield and attackers who press well and clog the passing lanes for the opposition. we can`t just be asking for transfers at each negative result cos to me, it is getting tiresome.

03 Jan 2017 10:00:11
hi all ed001 what is going on with Marko Grujic he does not even make the bench anymore?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he is injured, well he is back in training now.}

03 Jan 2017 10:08:03
cheers ed.

{Ed001's Note - welcome.}

03 Jan 2017 12:34:53
Ed1 why has grugic not played before his injury? Ed2 alluded to him and his father making a bit of a stir about it. I ask as it would seem like the club are making broken promises yet again to players.

{Ed001's Note - because he wasn't ready.}

03 Jan 2017 07:20:25
Hi eds (particularly 001 and 002), am interested in your perspectives on Emre Can please.

There have been times when I've been hugely impressed by his potential, mostly
1) when he played RCB under BR for a while
2) when at the base of a 4-2-3-1 but only when alongside Hendo who's mobility, positional sense and passing range complemented his physicality and tank like runs from deep very well

Of late however he seems a bit lost and seems to lack either
1) the mobility, positional sense and passing vision to replace Hendo in our 4-3-3, and/ or
2) he lacks the slick movement of Llalana/ efficiency of Wijnaldum further forward, and his slowness on the ball is proving a blocker rather than an enabler for the forwards

Question is do you see this as just part of his learning curve given he's so young, or do you also worry our current style of play doesn't actually make the most of his strengths and he'll continue to struggle as you can't teach the mobility and agility that our system requires (similar to Benteke for example)

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - you can develop mobility and agility, but he doesn't need to do so, he can just develop his play to offer us a different option for different opponents. The issue is the slowness on the ball, similar to Lallana in previous seasons, where he is not quite in tune with his team mates. That should be something he can learn. It really depends on his ability to evolve and develop himself. Players can be under the best coach in the world and learn nothing. It is up to them to take the lessons from each training session and match and learn from them.

Right now, Can is not learning, but he is still young and players regularly do go through these downturns in form. Their body has matured, to a large degree, but their mind has got nowhere near that same development level. That is what Can needs to focus on, developing his mind to read the game better, as his reading of the game is appalling, hence why he struggled so badly (despite you being impressed by him) at centre back as soon as anyone actually targeted him.}

03 Jan 2017 08:48:54
He needs to learn it quick. There are enough players in the academy who are crying out for a chance. Not a big fan of him and I don't know what he brings to the team other than his physique So does sissokho and Wanyama. He has one good game and then go missing for months.
Can has no discipline to play the deeper role nor he displace Lallana or Wiji playing higher up. Klopp is struggling to fit him into the team.

03 Jan 2017 09:11:35
Emre was poor, is he overweight? Does he look like a long term solution in that position. No. but he's got time on his hands to change.
Did we not win the game because of him? No I don't think so, we did not create enough clear chances considering the domination of possession and shots on goal.
Yes they scored 2 penalties but on another day we would of scored 4.
Lallana dropping deep didn't help as his speed in and around the box was missed, sturridge played well but no one seemed to want to ride his wave and up their game.

03 Jan 2017 09:31:35
Thanks for the reply Ed - much appreciated and hope he can step up quickly. He has much work to do to fit in the current setup.

Right now I'd rather see Stewart (DM) or Grujic/ Ejaria (further forward) on the team sheet in a 4-3-3, and that's saying a lot given Can is already a capped international player and how much potential I thought he had 12 months ago.

That is unless we go back to a 4-2-3-1 and play him alongside Gini or Stewart.

{Ed001's Note - I am sure he will learn given time.}

03 Jan 2017 10:01:26
Emre has shown enough quality at times. This is the point of a squad. You are right in that there are others from the Academy or on the fringes of the 1st XI and the Bench that will fight him for his place.
He is definitely not a bad player and I like him in the squad. Nobody is a complete player at 21 or consistently good at that age. The only one who delivers constantly is Delli. and we missed out on him.

03 Jan 2017 10:07:59
If we don't have Hendo available I think that Stewart should absolutely be starting in front of the defence, not Can. For me, Can plays when he's preferred to Gini or he doesn't play atm, that's the job he does.

03 Jan 2017 10:17:55
Eric Dier learned that role in less than what 12 months and was arguably the best player last season at the base. I know many don't rate him but he did learn that role magnificently.

{Ed001's Note - Eric Dier had played there before. He came through a youth system that teaches players a number of positions.}

03 Jan 2017 10:20:54
I agree Harry but I think there's more to him then what we are currently seeing.

03 Jan 2017 10:36:41
People need to give players time and one or two bad games does mean he's rubbish. You going to get this with young players.

03 Jan 2017 14:49:17
Ed is spot on. Emre is still a young player and he`s going through what young players go through in their development. To me until he figures things out, he is not a Klopp- type DM for the reasons Ed and others have presented cos he simply is not there yet in his development or is maybe trying to find his best position in midfield.

However, his qualities are more than useful. If he plays next to a DM like Hendo, he is more effective as he can get forward and press, score or assist as he has shown he has that in his locker this season.

I think he should play next to a DM due to his lack of awareness, speed of thought and positional sense, all things needed in order to play the DM position especially, the way Hendo plays it which is exactly how Klopp wants it to be played.

03 Jan 2017 17:22:12
I have one wish for Can, he needs to develop "coolness" as Klopp would say. He needs to be more composed in possession.

03 Jan 2017 18:56:43
Spot on eds, I first noticed his exceptionally bad reading of the game while he was playing with Germany. He was well off the pace and not near the level of the German national team.
Anyway, he has not developed at all in the last year or so from what I can see.
I was really excited by his potential when he came in but when you see no progression you start to question.
He's still very very young so I hope in a year or even two he can grow into the player he can Potentially be.

03 Jan 2017 07:53:56
I felt we did enough to win the game yesterday, their keeper made a couple of decent saves to keep out Sturridge in particular.

Having said that, you can really see the difference when Henderson is out of the team, Emre Can did ok but was off the pace IMO.

I also felt at times, Klavan and Lovren struggled with Defoe and Januzaj, especially Defoe'a pace, he should have scored when he split right through our defence.

I really hope Matip is back for the United game as they have pace in their team and they'll be sending in diagonal balls for Zlatan to knock down into the path of those runners ( the likes of Rashford ) something we failed to deal with at times yesterday.

We are still second though, if you'd have offered me that at the start of the season I'd have taken it all day long. It's just a shame we couldn't quite get the three points yesterday and I'm sure we will encounter a few more set backs between now and May.

Come on you Spurs tonight! 😎😎😎.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

03 Jan 2017 09:31:02
Looking forward, Klavan and Lovren should fare far better against Ibra than they did Defoe and Borini, which tells its own story, but Mkhitaryan could cause us real problems without Hendo. Doesn't happen very often, thankfully, but it was a bad day at the office by Klopp yesterday.

03 Jan 2017 10:15:13
Spurs play Chelski tomorrow Nicky.

03 Jan 2017 13:53:20
I fully expect Chelsea to beat spurs and pull away even further, we need to make sure we stay in the top 4.

03 Jan 2017 14:57:42
Keep the faith boys as Nicky said. Yesterday was always going to be tough regardless so I`m not surprised about the difficulties we faced. Sunderland had the same issue but they were at home so they had the fans to spur them on. Either way, nothing has been won nor lost yet especially with half a season to go. Just keep our heads down and focus on the next game and let the media do their thing cos frankly, that`s their job.

03 Jan 2017 07:33:00
Hi ed's. Where can I find your match reviews
Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I put them on the others page because they are usually lengthy. The one from yesterday will be up in about half hour or so when I have finished it.}

03 Jan 2017 06:29:30
Ed01, March review?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am putting it together now.}

03 Jan 2017 10:33:09
Its only just January.

{Ed001's Note - shows how awake I was, I never even noticed that!}

03 Jan 2017 03:40:28
Anyone else see the difference between Firminho on the pitch with coutinho and without.
When Phil returns, I think we actually get two new players (Robby and Phil) vs just one.
Man we missed Hendo today.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

03 Jan 2017 06:06:13
He is actually missing his natural position. If you keep playing him on the flanks, his influence is less.

03 Jan 2017 06:45:10
Agree, we almost seem to have two styles of attacking play

1) the slick passing/ movement/ interplay of Coutinho, Firmino, Llalana and Mane that swarmed all over sides in the earlier season
2) the more traditional and direct CF style play of Origi, Sturridge which IMO works best with the likes of Mane providing pace and width to stretch the defence and get in behind

That's probably a gross generalisation as most players at this level are good enough to adapt (particularly Mane who has fitted in well with both), but what is Firminos natural game? Probably not feeding Sturridge from left wing.

Firmino has definitely struggled for not having Couts to play off and read his movement or passes, question in my mind is can Klopp make Firmino and Sturridge or Origi work together better if that's what's required?

03 Jan 2017 07:26:50
The goal against Stoke city sums up the best position of Firmino. In and around 6 yard box where his movement is utterly unpredictable. He is a nightmare for any defender of his clever movement. He makes space for himself in any crowd. Receive the ball on the right. A little dummy and bang with his left foot. That is what he brutally good at.

Playing him on the flanks restricts his natural movement as he would need to play a lot more direct approach to get behind the man which Ian not his cup of tea.

If you play Sturridge you need two world class wingers on either side.

The same rules applies to Lallana as well. Shift him to flank and he becomes the old Lallana.

03 Jan 2017 15:01:15
Harry, I thought you said Firmino was an attacking midfielder.
