Well we won. But make no mistake we were lucky and only played adequately for 45 mins.
All the posts praising our performance should take a look where we are.
There is no glory in beating AV - it's to be expected and frankly we ought to walloping teams like that. look at their position in the League!
The defence are a real cause for concern as they are liable to concede mistakes and stupid goals.
AV had a fair few chances, which they ought to have converted.
Even at the end, the scored -albeit a disallowed goal.
We don't seems able to take a team by the scruff of the neck from the start and win convincingly.
LS was good -but were his shooting boots?
Gerard only really played decently for 45 mins.
BR was tactically naive again in the first half and the fact is we didn't win convincingly.
As for Downing - he is by far one of the worst signings in the history of the club. What did he do today - absolutely nothing of any worth whatsoever.
He is simply not fit to wear the shirt - no effort, no passion, no end product. Considering what FSG paid for him, it's no wonder why they would be reticent about paying over inflated fees for any players.
Only a few more games to play this season - time to push on and win every one, then FSG should make an assessment as to whether BR is right for the club.

People forget that most our team played internationals last week, suarez flew half way round the world, so starting slow was to be expected! Next game is all that matters! Please let's not Speak of if we win all our games and such an such lose, we could be in top 4! because every time we do! We lose! You have to agree downing was non-existent, aswel as henderson for most of the game. Lucas is too lightweight to play in the position he's playing, same thing with joe allen. I thought we could of got thrashed, still not good enough where we are in the league. RedTurk

I ( and probably a few other red fans)had a feeling if we scored in the first 20 minutes of the second half we would win, grateful we did, Villa's confidence just drained away, thank God for Stevie G's fantastic goal line clearance, Suarez was out of sorts today but still a handful, well played lads, keep it going now.

Great result today but its clear we lack a physical presence in the team. Every time villa went long to Benteke we looked weak, If we buy a strong powerful CB and similar style CDM I think we will have great team and squad.
Dont like to speculate but somebody in the mould of Diame for CDM and a similar player to Samba for the back.
Just feel that would give us another side to our passing game when we play the Stokes of this league

Before anyone starts going on about signing benteke remember a certain andy carroll who destroyed us twice in the same season. then we blew 35million on him. It bares too many similarities with bentekes situation, benteke seems a bit overated if you ask me.

Its clear that whenever jordan henderson plays, Liverpool are a better and more balanced side. Can't heap enough praise on the lad after a very difficult first season for him. He has fantastic energy and stamina and seems to be much more penetrating going forward. Very good to see.
Onto the transfer targets of next season, we don't need too many new players. I think downing is a good player to have in the squad, but I'd love BR bring in someone with a greater offensive threat. I. e ben arfa or sanchez if available. I also feel that lucas needs competition. He has come on leaps and bounds, and has turned out to be a fantastic player. However I feel sometimes, his lack of pace against quicker forwards is a hinderence and hence he gives away silly free kicks in dangerous areas. Someone like wanyama or capoue would be ideal. I hope we sign another creative midfielder for depth, christian eriksen maybe. We definitely need at least one new CB. One to play alongside agger. And if required one off the bench. We should be set to compete well next season.
PS. Coutinho is absolute class.

Bussquets and aren't and Macallali weren't blessed with any great pace. Lucas is a tremendous reader of the game, that's were his pace comes from his brain.

Henderson needs a special mention today. He's now a really good player for us. I like him just off Luis in a more advanced roll. He looks great going forward.

I think we are a really strong centre half away from being a great team. Fingers crossed Luis will stay.

Henderson now looks better for us because he is being played in the correct position, where he played for Sunderland. its frustrating when clubs buy a player then play him in a different position to the one where he was playing well enough for the club to buy him
Kevin Keegan moved to a new position, and that seemed to work out well enough. ;)

Maybe he's just growing as a player, maybe some of that potential is coming through!
I don't think it's down to simple position change.
Rodgers deserves some of the credit IMO.

I think we do look better playing with three midfielders. With Suarez Sturridge and coutinho interchanging at the front we'll have some kind of cutting edge. An imposing defensive presence is needed in the center of the field to add to our core of Hendo Lucas gerrard Allen Shelvey and we will have cover there. Then just a cb and well be strong next year without paying too much

Excellent 2nd half today - I thought we were going to have one of those days again with all those chances.
What's important is that I'm utterly convinced that Brendan is the right man. Defending needs sorting and I'm sure Brendan will address this in the summer.
So many silly points dropped this season. We would have been right up there if we could've closed games out. City home and away - Aresnal away - everton dissalowed goal - there's 8 points right there. Not to mention the countless home draws where we could've had a bag full.
On the whole web have been great. I don't understand the unbelievers on here now, we are the 2nd top scorers in the league, and great to watch. I bitch and moan if its not going well, but since christmas and namely after the 2 great signings I think we have been excellent on the whole.
It's time to come together as one now, Brendan is going to take us to the promised land.

Im going to back you on benteke. he's 21, 6 foot 3, has a goal ratio of 1 goal every 2 games which is outstanding for a the young lad at a poor poor side of aston villa. His goals have come because of the majorityof his work. Aston villa have created the least amount of chances this season to any other PL teamwork. He is fast, strong and makes fantastic runs, the best after RVP IMO. Just to clarify that's not including suarez. People. who analyze the game through out the season, he does have a good touch. He is a very good prospect in the PL.

I think he's a better striker than carrol and Sturidge and would be a good addition as the lad is pretty fast and can shoot with both feet. Again, he won't cost too much, say 8-12m if Villa were to go down. I would rather Benteke than Weimann anyway.

I was talking to some fans today about reports about alonso possibly coming back. and I think that Stevie and alonso if he comes back will be first choice for 12/18 months, and in this time hendo and Allen will spend a lot of time training with them ready to step in the season after next. Eds fellow reds what do you think could it be possible.
Move on, Alonso isn't coming back and Liverpool have shown zero interest in bringing him back. Stop believing everything you read in the paper. Galatasary is the team who is chasing Alonso, not Liverpool.

Personally I do not think is very nice to slate Alan. When Alan arrived at the club he was playing some excellent football.
Then the man had an injury that he was carrying around, he was in pain and still was playing for the LFC shirt.
It is a disgrace for some of us to talk about our players in such a manner and humiliate them especially under the circumstances of Alan been injured.

I was at the game today and it was clear in the 2nd half that Gerrard had really got into the team at HT and I thought he had a good game for us again.
It got me thinking, how much longer will we have him for? Do you think he will change his position SLIGHTLY in the following years or be used more sparingly perhaps? As I was shocked but also very impressed that he is the only BPL player to play every minute of every game. What an achievement!
Anyway I digress.
So how do you think Gerrard will be used in the coming years to prolong his career and what are peoples thoughts on his replacement (if he can ever be replaced truly)

When we have seen gerrard come on as a sub when we needed a goal he has done really well. napoli newcastle last year. I think he can help us for years to come wether he starts or when his legs can't take bring him in later on in games to get goals or keep a lead with his experience.

Just having a bit of a flick through the comments and I find it bizarre that somehow young Joe Allen is being slated yet again when the lad wasn't even playing and after we won AWAY from home.
Henderson played well, I'm a big fan of his and he took his goal nicely, no need to turn it into a henderson vs. allen thing though. They're both our players and we should support them both.

Thanks Famous, I'm just happy for the manager, the players and the fans, they showed great character today and I just felt there was enough in the first half to give us some cause for optimism in the second and they really delivered, we can still improve, but overall I thought we were good value for the win over 90 minutes.

Lets take a bit of a reality check here. i'm a passionate fan like all of you but the fans have very little to do with what happens on the pitch. Fans staying positive will not result in more wins. Proper team selection and tactics, players staying in good form and injury free, and the club building the best squad possible will get results. Fans just sit back and cheer and enjoy the ride.

Although I am very happy with the result and as you said we grinded the result we are no were close to compete with the big guys, villa lost their head completely after the second goal and every long ball they were throwing I felt that they might get a goal. good result but a very very long way to go.

Its the same old story here if you are realistic you get slaughterer, names thrown at you and don't belong to be Liverpool supporter or ask to support other teams. it was a very good result specially after the way we played the first half. but if we are not critical of our self we won't improve and for me it doesn't stop here, it stops when we win the league year after year and be untouchable again.
I sometimes feel can't have a decent conversation on this site apart from few posters, its always we will be top 4 and win the leaugue next season or BR is out of order Allen is rubbish suarez is leaving and we are buying 10 new players. I really need those decents posters to come back.

Playing teams close to the relegation zone who are fighting for their premiership survival and the financial implications attached to it are sometimes difficult to beat. Villa are a decent side as proved in todays game when they performed in the first half. Good luck to them they play good football and the EPL would be at a loss if they were relegated.

It's always difficult to play teams scrapping for their lives at the bottom and Villa have got some decent players upfront.
So at the end of the day we should be happy with our performance over the full 90 minutes (noted some posters ridiculous criticisms at half-time)
Thought Gerrard got quite angry and spurred the team on to a great 2nd half come back and thoroughly deserved his mom accolade.
Special mention to Henderson who always tries his heart out and took his goal well.
What can you say about Suarez? "Pure Class" even on one of his (for him) quieter days.

Eds if you are around, I have a doubt. It's regarding assists and goals.
1) Would a player who has been fouled in the 'box', leading to a penalty which has been scored, be awarded an 'assist'? Eg: Would Suarez get an assist today?
2) Would a player who shoots, but it deflects of an opposition player for an own-goal get an assist or a a goal? Eg: Suarez against Everton away early this season.
The reason I ask is because on both cases Suarez does NOT seem to have been awarded an assist.

I'm pretty sure the fouled player would be credited with the assist, don't know about the second point though.

When a player wins a penalty, that is subsequently converted, it is considered an assist. Don't think that Everton example is an assist though.
No for both cases I believe, but on fantasy footballs, they would normally get points for assist, for both cases. but they won't get listed for assist in the assist table.
I very much doubt it, and in any case what the hell does it matter!

All the moaners should hang there heads in shame, your not giving anyone at the club a chance at all, you just moan at stupid things, a game of football is 90 mins + injury time, but some of you come on here at half time and start complaining when the games not over! We all admit its been one step forward and two steps back this season but the key thing is we are showing progression in the right direction, we have played better than last season, we have scored more goals, it looks like we will end up with more points than last season too! plus some of you think the owners ain't backed the managers when they clearly have, kenny spent well over 100 million, Rodgers over 50 million, plus I'm sure we will see more money being spent in the summer too! Just calm down down and stop spitting your dummy out over every little thing that goes wrong at Liverpool! Show some patience, give the team your full support and let's give the players and the manager time to show what they can do! Well done Liverpool today for showing that you can come back from being 1-0 down to win 1-2 against a team who's fighting for survival, remember there's no easy games in the premier league now a days!

I think I must have been watching a different game to a lot of the negative readers. We are away from home, with little to play for, against a team fighting to stay in the league.
AV have a few decent players who cause problems but we created so many great chances and if we scored four it would not have been undeserved. Jordan Henderson is starting to develop into an intelligent, hardworking and skillful midfielder. Well done lads!
Probably too little too late for this season but I'm optimistic for next year especially if LS stays and we get an organiser at the back to replace carra.

For all those doubting us at half time, go away and 'support' someone else. For those who love football and indeed Liverpool football club, just watch the coutinho pass for the equaliser, you will not see a better through ball all season, simply sumptuous. A very good second half performance, controlled and comfortable. There are seeds of a very good side showing, just nurture them people and watch us grow.
Br left the team too dependant on suarez in the first half but he took notice and pushed up early in the second half and we scored a cracker a good win but we should do better against the villa type teams, villa had no real experience at the back

Blah blah blah, Henderson is rubbish, Lucas too slow, Gerrard doesn't try against the 'lesser' teams, BR is clueless.

Biggest problem first half was we didn't close Villa's midfield down enough, we allowed them to lift their heads and pick a long ball. Second half we stopped that happening a lot more and it forced Villa into hoofing the ball more in hope which made it easier for our defence to deal with.
Great character shown from the boys today, would have been easy to let their heads drop trailing 1-0 half time.
Really impressed by Coutinho once again, plays the type of intelligent passes we've been missing for years. Give him a couple more years of Prem experience and he'll be some player.

Ok he missed a good chance to score today but even the great Messi misses the odd opportunity.
He has 2 goal and 5 or 6 assists already. If you aren't happy or impressed with stats like that then you clearly have no understanding of football and should go and join the other plastics supporting Chelsea and City.

Congratulations to BR and the lads showed tremendous character to come back from behind take all 3 points against a highly motivated Villa side. There are some really fickle posters on here, slaughtering the manager and the players during the game - I wonder if any of you are going to come out and say I got it wrong and congratulate the manager for reinvigorating our players at half time? Perhaps you should check out my half time post, all in all it was a good team performance and we got our reward with 3 points to continue our progress under BR making it a Happy Easter for everyone connected with LFC.

It seems to me we need another blow out this summer Henderson has showen quality but he's just not good enough for Liverpool. suarez has been so wasteful. Benteke showing him up today. We carry zero threat from corners, most likely because we do not practice them. Then Defending any set pieces we are hopeless. If BR wants to be remembered as a good manager he needs to be strong defensively. Rafa had a perfect balance of a strong defense and great counter attacking football. Although I do not see BR getting sacked before next season I fear that he will not make any quality additions in the summer. If suarez goes then I think we will remain mid table for a long time. If we lose this match (even draw) it is not a good result and we have been thoroughly outplayed by two relegation candidates.

I don't know, everyones calling for calm and Rodgers to be given time but as much as i'd like to see continuity i'd also rather see us winning and challenging. tough one to call but i'm really on the fence some days I think wre going forward and others i'm just so fed up of the lightweight manner in which we go about our business. I see Skirtle gets a lot of slagging recently,

Anyway I think Skirtle is a great defender, he needs
a good run of games to be in form, which he has not had. Him and Agger are a brilliant partnership at the back. Probably one of the best in the Prem. Rather have them two than Ferdanand + Vidic. Skirtle, on form and on fire is the solidest thing any defense can have. The Skirtle situation is not a well managed at LFC.

Well, there really aren't many positives to be taken from this half. I would highlight the 2 through balls from Johnson and Coutinho to put Suarez in, who looks very hungry btw.
We seem to be trying more of a direct style of play, not really trying to play our way through and we are only pressing in our own half. I would say these tactics aren't really working at the moment. We are also making Benteke look like the best striker in the world - we just can't get the ball from him - a 10/10 for him atm. We really don't have enough of a physical presence in there, every cross of theirs looks dangerous.
So what would I change?
Nothing at the moment, change the tactics at half time, keep the ball on the floor, play our way around them. Then if things stay at 1-0, bring on Sturridge at about the 60 minute mark, probably for Downing, who hasn't looked so impressive so far.

I've just been watching all the seasons goals on LFC TV and anybody else notice that when Skrtel is defending he just backs off and doesn't challenge which led to Afew goals being conceded, same with agger losing his man on set pieces has cost us

Really hope we put in a good performance against Villa, it's not going to be easy today.
With eight games to go I think slowly we are moving in the right direction under Rogers. As most of us are aware, last season we couldn't score goals, this season we're leaking goals. In fact, so far this season we are the second highest scoring team in the league and the 57 goals we have scored in 30 games to date, are more than we amassed in 38 matches last season. Interestinlgy enough, we've also scored eight more than at the same point in 2008-9 season when we finished second to the Mancs.
Suarez has been key this season almost doubling his goal tally from twelve to twenty two so far this campaign, which is why it's so important the club does everything it can to keep Louis and build the team around him.
Along with shoring up the defence I'd like to see more vision from midfield. When Lucas was injured, Gerrard was pushed further back, picking the ball up on the 18 yard box which to me, is not where he should be. On Lucas's return, Gerrard moved further forward again and the teams goal tally doubled with Gerrard getting seven in the last fourteen games.
Last but not least, we really need to man up against teams like Stoke City. We've got to be able to break these teams down and not get out muscled in key areas of the park.

1. Buy some leaders in defence and midfield
2. Inject some pace
3. Buy early
It is vitally important to buy some players who are strong on field leaders. Players who can lead in defence, lead when the goings tough, drive the team and add mental toughness. A few "older" players may be the answer. The payback maybe more advantageous in results rather than the dogma of resale value so often associated withour purchases.

We obviously need to replace carra in the summer.
Do we replace him with a player that will go straight into the first team? Pissing off skrtle in the process and probably making him leave as well, leaving us needing to bring in yet another centre back this summer.
Or do we bring in someone younger and up and coming to be back up to agger and skrtle? (a bit like carra this season, only younger) skrtle stays, and this new player gets in the first team eventually. But leaving us with the same leaky defence for next season.
Coates is probably going and Kelly will probably be moved back to centre back after injury.
Rodgers has to tread through this potential mine field very carefully in the summer. He has to get this right.
Im my opinion Williams is not the answer. But Rodgers will know better than me if he will fit in or not.
