Konoplyanka deal back on!

Believable10 Unbelievable15

Why, because he liked a Gerrard photo?

No, because Macca says so and also because apparently he told one of his older Managers that he may be in Liverpool soon.

Maybe he meant Everton?

According to the Echo: Reds closing in on double swoop for Spanish full-backs Moreno and Manquillo.

Believable11 Unbelievable3

31 Jul 2014 23:10:09
Seems a lot of noise about a double signing of Moreno and Maquillo from Athletico. Ayre out there to finalise both.

Many press printing this. Suggests this leaves the final window weeks to secure a forward or two if Borini goes.

Lacazette has been quoted as £10m in reports linking him to?Newcastle
Reus has a £28m buyout apparently.

Wow dream up this squad if those four come in by 31st August. .Title?

Believable9 Unbelievable5

Reus' buyout only gets active next summer so if he leaves between now and then, he will go for £35m+

According to Echo we are closing in on both Manquillo and Moreno as Mr Ayre fly to Spain.

Happy with that Ed?

Believable5 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Maybe.}

31 Jul 2014 22:52:48
Ian Ayre has flown to Spain in an attempt to hurry along negotiations which have continued for most of the summer over Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno, and right sided defender Javier Manquillo of Atletico Madrid.

Eds, great site! I check it so often on my phone that my girlfriend thinks I've got someone on the side haha. But in all seriousness, if we could only have one more signing this window, who would everyone want?

I would have to choose Ricardo Rodriquez the lb from Wolfsburg. Unrealistic, I know. But I get an anticiperection everytime I think of him in our startling 11!

You know who's really not a fan of Liverpool? Iago Aspas, that's who.

Not only is he revelling in the fact that he's escaped his Anfield misery, but he's also acting as an anti-recruitment consultant for the Reds, telling Kop target Alberto Moreno to stay the heck away.

"Alberto Moreno would never feel like he does in Sevilla at Liverpool, " he told sevilla.abc.

"I've been here for three or four days. Now that I belong to Sevilla, I prefer he stays here."

Doesn't look like the deal is likely to happen anyway. .

Believable12 Unbelievable4

Maybe the journalist or the media is twisting his words to make it sound more negative then it actually is. I think Aspas is talking about the environment in Seville compare to Liverpool. I been to Seville; it is very beautiful and food is quite cheap.
As for peferring moreno to stay, perhaps it is better for him/squad to have him in the squad than without.

Agree3 Disagree1

I'm sure Aspas' number one concern is the price of food on his measly wage!
Anyway I think it's more of a case of he wants their better players to stay rather than leave!

Agree1 Disagree0

I'm sure Aspas has really expressed his concerns over the price of food. Haha.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its just like Gerrard saying he wouldev liked it if Suarez stays.

Its not like Gerrard saying Suarez is too good for Arsenal.

If you get my drift.

Eds a few questions I would be grateful if you could answer.
1. Is it possible for Liverpool to turn their attention back to Alberto Moreno after missing out on Bertrand.
Is Rojo still an option?
And is bony an option?

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - They will all be options I guess.}

Thanks for the reply ed! And also any idea if the Javier Maniquillo interest stil exists and what type of deal that would be?

HI eds with Jimmy Anderson having a great game down in Southampton and scooping the man of the match award can we expect a bid from LFC anytime soon or wiil he first have to change his name to Mark Key

Believable7 Unbelievable0

Or he could change his name to Jiminez Andersones and add a couple million to make him sound fancier.

Or hit two birds with one stone and call him Marqueez Signinho. Then will people be happy?

Is anyone annoyed at Aspas for telling Moreno to stay at Sevilla? :/

Believable19 Unbelievable1

31 Jul 2014 20:39:22
No, why would any news station know what aspas said to Moreno anyways?

Agree2 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 20:45:03
Sorry I didn't see the interview till now. But I'm not annoyed by it still. He didn't say anything bad about Liverpool fc.

Agree3 Disagree0

I don't believe he said that in as many words.

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 21:05:13
Aspas is a smart guy. He's already figured out it's the only way he can be of any use to Seville.

Seriously in all fairness, he's done no such thing. He specifically says he's not spoken to him about Monero. All he said is that he never felt at home in Liverpool and already feels at home in Seville, and he feels it gives him a much better quality of life and has made him happy. It's nothing to do with Monero, just how he feels after what was no doubt a tough year to stomach

Agree2 Disagree0

Not exactly what he said. Was more along the lines of 'well, I'm a Sevilla player so of course I want our best players to stay here'.

What would you have him say? Sure, I just joined and want the supporters to like me, but Moreno should definitely leave?

Agree4 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 21:15:21
aspas is sounding a bit deluded really. he didn't try hard enough. and was way out of his depth. he should ask himself a few questions before criticising others. let's face it no-one in the world wanted to buy him off us. he's on loan. same with reina. get over yourselves.

can't understand why we signed him in the first place. I could tell straight away he'd never be good enough

i'm sure moreno is clever enough to make his own mind up

Agree0 Disagree2

When talking to Spanish media Spanish man says he prefers the lifestyle in Spain to Merseyside shock.

Agree8 Disagree0

01 Aug 2014 02:58:44
mr shankly. If there's one thing aspas didn't lack it was effort. I guess you missed the moments he was urging the crowd on even when he wasn't getting a place in the team. The guy busted his tail when he was in the game, and out of position as well. Maybe you should be our chief scout if you knew a center forward would struggle in a new environment/culture out of position in his first year. And also, I'm pretty sure aspas will have no trouble finding a team in Spain.

After watching last nights game I've decided Henderson is the only player in the world who mustn't dread pre-season fitness!

Believable27 Unbelievable0

The kid really does seem bionic. Good for him and keep it up

Agree6 Disagree0

Hendo is awesome!

Agree9 Disagree0

Turns out his gait is actually an evolutionary advantage.

Agree6 Disagree0

Looks like he's been hitting the gym aswell. Definitely a very important player in our team now.

Agree2 Disagree0

Sterling is the real deal. Hendo has gone up a level. Sakho looks determined to to have a good season. Coutinho ready to step up just needs a few goals. Sturridge looks too relaxed at the moment. Needs to get ungry and driven like he was last season but i'm sure it will come.

Agree3 Disagree0

I was hoping we could have some "chuck Norris" esk Henderson jokes / statements about his fitness.

Jordan Henderson is so fit that when he done the bleep test the national grid stopped before he did.

We need 2 fullbacks. Stayed up last night and watched the game, and again on repeat just after work.
The team is very very promising,, but focusing just on the defence, time and time again City wingers was getting to the bi line and cutting in. It was just too easy.
I think whether it's Johnson Enrique Robinson or Kelly they're just not good enough. Flanno has the potential but he's years off the finished article. If we're serious about challenging for the league again we need 2 awesome fullbacks

Believable9 Unbelievable6

I thought Kelly played very well last night, looked stronger in the tackle than other recent games which could mean he's getting over his injury worries. If he can get back to his pre-injury form he will be a very important player this season and for many to come.

Agree6 Disagree1

In the first half we played the diamond formation and that made us narrow so naturally their wingers would have some fun. This is not the teem BR will play against Southampton. It was a friendly! It is only designed to allow managers a free hand to try different setups.

Might also add that City never scored in the first half either so given the attempts our defence didn't do that bad.

I don't believe Flanno is "years" off. Nor has Kelly had much match time. To soon to judge but it is LFC at the top of that table.

Oh and another thing City played to seasoned wingers against our returning injury Enrique and our youth Kelly. These wingers could make anyone look bad.

For me, we did what we needed to do and above all we did not give up.

Hendo and Sterling looked damned good.

Agree4 Disagree0

DBol, how many games has Martin Kelly played in the last year?

Exactly.

On Johnson and Enrique I understand your frustrations however.

Wasnt exactly first choice defence was it. don't worry so much.

Eds and reds. Bit out a strange post this is, but I have no where else to turn, and with everyone's extensive knowledge, I'm looking for some help. I fly to Greece next week, and low and behold I've got tonsilitus, so bad the white pus things all over them. My gp says she's not giving me anti biotics because the nation is "growing immune" to them. My question is, from London to Bombay, are there any natural remedies I can try to speed the recovery up, I've namedy tonsils "kewell" as they're always injured and I hope that makes this Liverpool related. Please help!

As odd as it seems Eds advice works, and if you don't have a history of using antibiotics, then there shouldn't be an issue, and you should challenge the doctor, or see another, but if you have been (more so, within the last 6-12 months) then best to take the doctors advice, leave the antibiotics for the potentially heavy stuff. Also, fresh ginger tea could help with soothing.

Good luck!

Agree0 Disagree0

Read up on that honey, it's quite raved about! Expensive tho! And also read about acupressure on the tonsils ed, could be an interesting route, not sure it would cure the pus on the insides, might relief some pressure though. And Wayne, been gargling salt bud, had hot water, tcp, salt and mouth wash in one glass! Thanks for all the advice :)

Agree1 Disagree0

I was very sick the other day, then I re-watched Liverpool vs Arsenal and all was well again.

Agree4 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 21:17:43
salt water gargles

lots of fluid

and plenty of sleep.

get well soon matey

Agree0 Disagree0

Also once its cleared up keep an eye out for tonsil stones and food stuck in them! I can remove mine which seems to have stopped the infections

Agree0 Disagree0

Go and see another doctor lad you should be given antibiotics for tonsilitus its can be nasty and does not shift by itself. The immunity to antibiotics stuff stems from doctors prescribing antibiotics for colds and flu - basically things people don't need it for. They are necessary for tonsilitus - demand them!

Agree2 Disagree0

Seano is right, tonisllitus is not to be piss*d around with

Agree1 Disagree0

You should take antibiotics if there is pus on your tonsil otherwise that can progress to tonsillar abcess which is more difficult to treat
If the doctor concerned about antibiotic resistance she can just take throat swab and do bacterial culture and resistance test and prescribe you with antibiotic then she can review your condition after 5 days
By that time the culture result already finished and if needed she can adjust the antibiotic according to culture result

Eds I remember a few days ago reading you said the Moreno offer was still on the table and if my memory is right I remember seeing you say that he wants to play for madrid one day. So I was just wondering if Liverpool would really want a player who as soon as he sees fit to go he will just be sold or will put a transfer request in to get his move which seems to me like he is only really interested in going there one day and not playing for the Liverpool jersey?

Believable5 Unbelievable0

31 Jul 2014 20:48:01
What Spanish player doesn't wanna play for those clubs? Alonso loves Liverpool yet it was his dream move to go to Madrid.

Agree5 Disagree0

01 Aug 2014 06:35:53
I can still remember Ed002 saying that terms between LFC and Moreno's agent were agreed but if we want the player then LFC need to meet Sevilla's demands.

So IMO the player is more than happy to join LFC but we need to pay up. It is that simple. Moreno has been our #1 target for LB all along so there is every chance of us going back to make a deal happen.

Just got back from Spain on holiday and thought I'd report on some fabulous news.

I was out in Madrid in a Bar named Totally Bull (they love a bit of bull fighting) and noticed a familiar face working as a waiter, I approached him and asked his name, after a bit of to and fro (My language for dummy's book by Joey Barton worked a treat) I managed to establish that the lad was in fact Isco! It turns out that Real Madrid have got him doing some bar work in order to train him for his new role in the squad - the water boy. He said he's dead keen to move to Liverpool from what Alonso's been saying to him and has Facebooked Rogers in the hope of securing a deal or at least a connection on LinkedIn.

Fingers crossed for this one fellas, would be a great one to bring in. Makes a cracking cocktail too.

31 Jul 2014 19:28:42
Think he may have taken a knock or felt a strain as in one of the training photos from yesterday he had his left leg strapped and was watching with Lallana. Maybe just a precaution being only a few weeks away from PL kick off.

Agree1 Disagree0

Skrtel wasn't their either.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 15:21:43
Hi eds and fellow reds,

Just looking for the opinion of you guys on our rb position. If we sort our lb out with a decent player who do you see starting rb this season?

For me it has to be flanno, johnsn is terrible. he is so frustrating to watch constantly losing the ball with really bad decision making trying to dribble past 3 players when the simple pass is on, as well as his defending is brutal. with flanno you may not have the best attacking full back in the world but he shows passion for the badge, defensively more solid than johnson and I think his retention of the ball is a lot better than johnson.

finally I don't know what the big hype is around coutinho on this site, If markovic hits the ground running and lallana comes back from injury I think he will struggle to get into the team. His shots from outside the box need a great improvement its so frustrating to watch him skin a player or two then take one of his shots which never seem to hit the target or else his final pass doesn't reach its destination. Am I the only one who notices the amount of times our attacks break down due to his poor technique with his shots?

Believable0 Unbelievable12

The only time we've looked good this preseason is when coutinho is on the field. Coutinho (at 20 years old) should be in the starting line up every game. Lallana should be used as depth and nothing more. He brings nothing that coutinho and sterling do not. As for his shot. Yes they are often off target. But I feel this is due to youth rather than lack of skill. Let him continue playing and his shot will improve. Sit him on the bench and it will get worse. Lallana was a horrible buy for a depth player.

Agree0 Disagree5

Ohio. Agree that we've looked best with Coutinho on the field so far. Completely disagree that Lallana is a horrible buy. They can play in the same team are be used in tandem across games and series of games to ensure we always have a creative spark.

Agree7 Disagree0

Lfcohio I think you're right on Coutinho mate and leaving him out of the side certainly won't help his shooting so he needs to keep playing, his little moments of magic (more frequent when he's not being marked out of the game) make him such an important player for us now Suarez is gone. Surely they must be working on his shooting in training though? I can't quite understand how inaccurate they are sometimes.

I think you're completely wrong on Lallana though. I honestly believe he will be a magical signing, you do not pay £25m for a squad player.

Agree4 Disagree0

We haven't even had the chance to see Lallana play for us and you've already written him off? Okay then.

Agree6 Disagree0

I'd put Flanagan in at RB because of his performances last year. I just feel he had a better season than Johnson and deserves to start the season in the more familiar RB position.

Johnson was pretty decent when he played LB, so why not switch them over, see how things go and if Johnson is having problems then put Kelly in a RB and switch Flanagan to LB.

This is all assuming we don't have any more business this summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2014 01:08:44
Lallana will not be benched much, as I believe he was Brendan's number one target, so he'll start more than he's benched!

Agree0 Disagree0

Guy's rread Ohio's post. He doesn't say Lallana is a "horrible buy" he says he would be a horrible buy for a squad player!

Big difference.

Oh and BTW watched a ssn review of last season and got to see Lallana's goal against Chelsea. If you've not seen this few seconds of magic hunt it out. Got me buzzing to see him in red even more!

Agree0 Disagree0

For me Coutinho can't be marked out of a game because he pops up everywhere on the pitch. Also his work rate not only tackling and closing down but making sure he is open for a pass is huge considering his age.

Agree0 Disagree0

FatJan. I can read mate. All players are squad players. But the idea that Rodgers paid 25m for someone he doesn't expect to start (all things considered) is bonkers.

I think the bashing of Joe Allen is ridiculous, and a sign of short term memory loss. Allen at the end of last season, on regaining fitness, was a workhorse and actually quite a joy to watch. I agree he has his flaws, his long range passing in particular. But, the lad is 23-24.? It was insane to watch the team last night and realize our starting lineup is likely going to have a front 5 of players less than 25 years old. This team is going to only get better.

Also, I think Coates, who may be slow, showed why he was rated so highly when we bought him. I think the injuries have caused him to be even slower, but, his positional sense of the game and having a knack for being in the right place was impressive. He's also very, very young.

Believable14 Unbelievable4

Allen is like everyone's mistress
spank him whenever you want
anything goes wrong Allen out brigade goes to overdrive mode
poor lad
p.s tj red you had asked about posting something long on out Liverpool - banter.co.uk site you forgot about it?

Agree4 Disagree1

I think confidence may be an issue with him. He never plays with freedom and always looks like he is playing under pressure.

He needs to loosen up and start enjoying himself. Look at Henderson, he has a similar role to Allen except he looks light years ahead of him.

As it stands he won't get a game, but if he is happy to work hard behind the scenes and up his game then he is welcome to stay.

Red Rum

Agree2 Disagree1

Sorry but Allen will never reach the heights to justify his price tag. he was absolutely poor last night, I don't think any team in the prem would want him. I hope he can prove me wrong this season but I somehow doubt it

Agree4 Disagree7

Most of those fans bashing Allen claim that Sakho is a waste of space too.

It is a case of where one cannot see the wood for the trees.

Agree2 Disagree3

Seriously, this is getting old and damn near stupid. Leave the boy alone! Allen is like everyone`s punching. If we lose or draw a game, blame Allen even if he wasn`t in the stadium. LET IT GO! Allen plays without fear and works hard for the team. He is often injured so he cn`t seem to get a run of games BUT when fit and in form, he is a very good player. Someone said he playe too much under pressure. Why wouldn`t he with clueless posters giving him stick because he lost the ball once in a game. It shows that some of those who slate him have never kicked a ball because if the have, they would know that it has happened to every player pro or amateur. For the last time, LEAVE THE BOY ALONE!

Agree6 Disagree2

I rate Allen as a decent player, but I cannot see the lad ever becoming a regular first team player with LFC. His best performances imo last season were against Spurs and Cardiff when paired in midfield with Lucas and Hendo. But with Can and Lallana coming in, he is our 6th best midfielder and unlikely to make a significant impact at the club. I could see him leaving next season.

Agree5 Disagree0

We all know he is short. I doubt any health drinks will help him to reach the height you wanted.

Agree1 Disagree0

Allen works his socks off and he wears the red shirt with the bird on it .It will be a long season and plenty of games for him to play. Leave him alone, a strong squad will be required, and Allen would be a worthy member of that squad.

Agree1 Disagree0

I gave Allen a chance for 2 seasons, but Sorry I see nothing but a player costing us goals. He's to weak on the bal, not very incisive in the final third, misses glaring opportunities. he doesn't cross well and isn't quick enough to pressure. In short. He's not good enough for the midfield we want

Agree0 Disagree0

P.S I think the posts of ''leave the boy alone.'' are pathetic, I'm all for giving players chances, but then there's just blind allegiance. He's had 2 years now at anfield and unlike borini wasn't injured or sent on loan, and for me he' still no where near the 1st team. The ''kid'' needs to go

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 14:22:19
Hi Eds

Could there be a chance that Enrique could be our first choice left back next season with Flanagan as back up, or do you still expect a new LB to come in?

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - still expect one to be signed.}

If I was Rodgers I'd go all out to sign Moreno. we need a top quality LB

Agree1 Disagree1

A left back has to be signed. It was the priority position for this transfer window. Lots of good options out there, as long as the club is willing to stump up the cash.

Agree1 Disagree0

ED is that expect or hope. You any exciting info?

I'd have thought if Moreno is the 1st choice we'd have gotten closer by now as a price has been set. Unless I'm wrong we did meet prices set on other signings, Lallana, Lambert, Markovic and Can?
We also agreed the terms Lille wanted to enable Origi signing.
Surely when Aspas moved we'd have used that opportunity? What do you think ED? am I completely off or is maybe Moreno no the choice?
Thanks

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - expect. I think Moreno's move has gone mate, it just seems unlikely we are going to suddenly meet their terms and I see no reason for them to accept ours.}

Do we have any interest in Ricardo Rodriguez?

{Ed002's Note - No.}

You would think Everton signed messi ronaldo Suarez there on about winning the league now he he he.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

31 Jul 2014 15:37:43
I think now that he's found a home, and with a great manager like Martinez, they, too, will be searching for a place in Europe. Lukaku has haunted my professional and national teams, (Liverpool and USA).

Agree2 Disagree0

To be fair, they should be really happy, at least for now. Stones, Barkley and Baines have all stayed and Lukaku has arrived permanently along with Besic (don't know much about him tbh).

That's a successful window to date for Everton. But with no one buying a £35 million broom off them this window, like United did last Summer then maybe they'll have some painful decisions to make in the coming few seasons, if backing isn't found. Who knows?

Agree2 Disagree0

It is big news for them that they retained their two best attacking players. Not sure they can add to what they accomplished last year, but they look like they can give the top teams trouble.

Agree1 Disagree0

Let them dream. Been a long time since they bought a player of that calibre with that kind of price; the everton fans will have a lot of hope this season which is always great for the derby but unfortunately it will go crashing down especially with the Europa games they have. We couldn't cope with it and we had saurez at the time.

Agree1 Disagree0

They now have a better striker than us which is a disappointment

Agree1 Disagree12

We bought Origi for 10 mil, who kept Lukaku out of the Belgium team this world cup, and the bought Lukaku for 30 mil. so who made the better signing hhhhhmmmm?

Agree8 Disagree3

They had lukaku last year & didn't qualify they've just spent 3 years budget & not actually gained anyone from last season

Agree4 Disagree0

Everton is simply a stepping stone for Lukaku, just like we were for Suarez. I can see him playing for one of Europe's elite in 3-4 years time. And they have not exactly strengthened imo. They have qualified for europa (which is a curse) and have spent the majority of their budget in making two of their loan deals permanent. Unless they bring in 5-6 new players, 6-7th is bets they can hope for.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku better than Sturridge? Not for me, just looking at the quality of goals he scores in comparison to lukaku, Danny has far more to his game.

Agree6 Disagree0

Sorry Chris, but Sturridge is better than Lukaku

Agree6 Disagree0

But quality of goals is actually irrelevant

Agree0 Disagree5

Lukaku is not NOT better than Studge. Shoot, he`s not even better than Benteke and Origi who would have/indeed kept him on thebench at the WC. Stupid post!

Agree2 Disagree0

Better striker than us Chris?

Grow up lad.

It's people like you that take a class player like Sturridge for granted.

Agree5 Disagree0

I always rated lukaka till not so long ago when 2 season ticket holding bitters said he does have very poor first touch a lot of the time and that he does no off the ball work, said he will just stand there no matter how much they scream at him.
Will defo pay closer attention to him this season to c what they are on about.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku better than Sturridge? That seems a stretch.

Agree4 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 18:02:12
Chris,

You rate lukaku more highly than studge? On yer bike mate

Agree9 Disagree0

No need to get carried away lads, I don't under estimate Danny at all and I like him a lot. I just happen to really rate Lukaku.
Statistically he's a better goalscorer and he's only 21.
It's not like I'm worried as I think attacking options wise we're very strong

Agree1 Disagree4

I have a lot of bluenose mates. They think Lukaku blows hot and cold and his first touch needs to improve. None think he was a good buy at the price. It's a bit like a West Ham putting all their eggs in the Carroll basket. If Lukaku gets injured will Bobby Martinez wish he'd brought in 4 or 5 players instead? On the flip side it's a settled squad with further improvement to come from Lukaku, Coleman, Stones, McCarthy and Barkley. I think Everton will do well again.

Agree1 Disagree0

How is he statistically better even?

Sturridge had 21 goals with 99 shots (conversion rate of 21%) in 2, 269 minutes played (goal every 108 minutes).

Lukaku had 15 goals with 98 shots (conversion rate of 15%) in 2, 467 minutes played (goal every 164 minutes).

Sturridge had 7 assists to Lukaku's 6 and a 79% pass completion compared to Lukaku's 66%.

Literally the only statistic in which Lukaku was better was in clearances, where he had 18 to Sturridge's 5. Otherwise, they even had similar defensive stats in terms of tackles and such.

Agree2 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 22:03:23
Lukaku better than Sturridge hahahaha, now that's comic genius

Agree0 Disagree0

RDL
You are basing your stats on only 1 season and remember in that season Sturridge was at the club that finished second and was partnered by the best striker in the world whilst Lukaku was at Everton.
I was talking about career stats.
If you only want to pick one season why not pick the season before last when Lukaku was at lowly west brom?

Agree0 Disagree1

Okay.

For 2012/2013:

Sturridge at LFC had 10 goals with 61 shots (16% conversion rate) in 1, 088 minutes (goal every 108 minutes).

Lukaku at WBA had 17 goals with 97 shots (17% conversion rate) in 2, 004 minutes (goal every 117 minutes).

Sturridge had 3 assists (in half the playing time) to Lukaku's 4 and an 85% pass completion compared to Lukaku's 72%.

I'm not saying Lukaku is bad or anything as I think he's a decent enough striker, particularly for his young age, but, for me, I don't see how Lukaku is better statistically at all.

Last season Sturridge had one of the highest non-penalty conversion rates I've seen for a striker in a long time (Suarez was ~17% as an example with 31 goals and 181 shots which was near twice as many as Danny, Ronaldo at ~14% as another with 31 goals and a ridiculous 216 shots).

Sturridge has been more or less in the vicinity of a goal per 90 over most of his career and is very clinical. For me, Lukaku is not quite at that level, although still very good.

All opinions though.

Agree1 Disagree0

Put simply Lukaku has a senior career average of a goal every 2.3 games
Sturridge is a goal every 2.4 games
This makes Lukaku better statistically
Add to that he's younger and has got his goals in much weaker teams.
As I say I'm happy with Sturridge and I like our attacking options but I would have loved to see us add Lukaku because I don't see many more players available with his ability.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - stats? Come on Chris you are better than to use a ridiculous stat that shows nothing about the way they have been used throughout their career. Sturridge has had to make his goals for himself for almost his entire career before joining us. A lot of his goals with us he has had to do so too. He also chases back to cover full backs, presses for the ball, shows good movement and has an excellent first touch. Lukaku has a woeful first touch, has everything given to him on a plate because of his size, he is the sole focal point of the teams he has played for. You would have to ask why he is not scoring a lot more? He should be a better than 1 in 2 player with the way he plays, because he adds nothing to a team in build up play or workrate. Half the time he is just standing around moaning about the ball not being given to him. Lukaku is nowhere near Sturridge's level right now, not even close. He needs proper guidance and coaching and to develop a team ethic.}

You're right Ed I wouldn't usually resort to meaningless stats but 1 in 2 is pretty good I'd like you to find me half a dozen strikers with a better return than that. Also it is true that he's been at lesser clubs with fewer chances made for him and while I'm a fan of Sturridge as I've alraady stated I do, for some unknown reason, think that he may just have a bum season now and again. I hope it's not this season. I feel Lukaku will just get better and better.
It's all about opinions though but I'm disappointed with some of the comments aimed at me after all I'm hardly top of the list for "posters who slag off players"

Agree0 Disagree0

Alright number 1.
Am intrested in you opinion on sturridge, and his ability to lead the line by himself. I think he is a fantastic player and that we are lucky to have him. But how much of his great season was down to his strike partner creating space for him with his runs and defenders fear of his unpredictability. Do you think he has the football intelligence to be there by him self or does he need a strike partner to flurish?

Thanks for the great work by the way, working long hours to help out people u will probably never meet; for me you deserve a knighthood.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I think he creates his own space with skill, pace and acceleration, the issue is finding a partner that doesn't close it off. Someone like Lambert, who likes to drop deep, would be perfect. Let Sturridge terrorise with pace right up on them, to create the space for the rest to operate in behind him.

Thanks mate, but I wouldn't want one, I love what I do and it would feel wrong to accept something like that for this. I would feel like I was cheating someone who deserves it out of one.}

He flourished without Suarez at the start of last season, so why not?

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2014 06:35:23
So do you think someone like bony would be a good partner for him? Macca mentioned him as an option instead of remy and at first I was a little disappointed but he's a good player and fits your description ed, he loves to drop deep and lay the ball off for others. Plus he'd thrive with Gerrards free kick deliveries.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - should be yes.}

Hey ed's and reds.
Firstly imo I would of thought lfc would be going for a more versatile fwd, as studge will be our main cf next season so the other fwd could get some games playing wider.
However with the speculation regarding bony maybe this suggests the the two up top with the diamond may be used a lot again this season! which could explain going for such a player! As him and studge offer different things but both offer goals. I would be interested to here ed001 opinion on the possibility of bony if possible tho? As he's always very knowledgeable on these matters.
Also I see a lot of lfc fans going on about reus! While he is a lovely footballer, I think some need to realise that sterling is getting very close to reus' standard already. I think that sterling could fill that number 7 shirt and role for many years to come and we should be very excited to see him develop further.
Thanks

I think we could let go of Johnson and Allan you could really tell last night that they just look out of there depth now, Johnson just does what ever he wants, he was on for the second half and he was court out of position 4/5 times in that period.
Emre can looks in a different league to Allan, he has an end product and is very comfortable in Possession, I fail to see what these two bring to the team?

With lallana hendo can & cout all capable of playing that CM role Allan is gunna find himself 5th choice and only starting in the league cup. I'd sell and bring rossiter in its the only way he's going to get the game time & experience he needs.

Believable5 Unbelievable11

31 Jul 2014 14:48:47
Nice way to support the team Benny. Johnson hasn't been great for the last year but while he's a Liverpool player he needs support. Your trashing of joe allen is ridiculous. How can you judge a player on a pre season game? Try being positive about our players!

Agree2 Disagree5

I'd let Lucas and Allen go and bring in a DM.

Someone with pace who can cover for our fullbacks when we lose possession up the pitch, because that is how we will get caught out this season.

As we saw last season we attack so much that we shoot ourselves in the foot sometimes by conceding sloppy goals because of the lack of protection in front of the back 4.

Red Rum

Agree4 Disagree5

31 Jul 2014 15:43:09
While I totally disagree with Benny about Allen, I don't think he's said anything out of the way. He never said he'd boo the players, he just said they look in over their heads. I didn't think Charlie Adam was good enough, and thought he was a bad purchase, but I never didn't support him when he was on the pitch. I think people are too quick to throw stones at others for criticism.

Agree5 Disagree0

I think Lucas is good cover. He had a few poor games and an injury but he was class before that. I think he has done well in preseason. Much rather get behind him.

Allen. Not so sure. I haven't seen him have a great game or a run of good games, mostly the opposite.

Agree1 Disagree1

Lucas is a great player and I have no idea why any of you would want him sold, especially with the extra games this season. At the VERY least, he is a great backup to a number of positions but primarily DM. IMO, he is more reliable than SG in that position.

I'd say so far in pre-season that Allan is not been great but I have to take into account that the position he plays is not one that will often be covered in glory. That said, I think with the players we have brought in, he is going to have to up his game big time to get a decent amount of game time.

Agree4 Disagree1

If we can get anything for Kelly we should let him go as well

Agree0 Disagree2

Why do we want to get rid of the likes of Allen & Lucas - Granted they are not starting 11 but as we saw last year a starting 11 isn't enough to win the league - We need the likes of Lucas/Allen to provide us that depth when we have injuries etc - And if we replace then you have people saying "oh i'm worrying were going to do a tottenham" Lucas/Allen can do a job - They won't be in the 1st eleven most games but remember we have PL/CL/FA/CC all to play next season

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 13:37:54
Interesting game last night, thought City were probably the better team overall (Fernando looked very good) but that we too had good spells and ended up finishing the stronger side (which bodes well for match day fitness when the serious stuff starts). Few observations about the game:

Positives
- Excellent energy in midfield, particularly from Henderson
- Coutinho looks very sharp
- Sterling could have a huge season ahead, boy has so much talent its scary
- Kelly looked good and, positionally and defensively, so much better than Johnson, hope we get to see him at centre-back at some point to see how much of a good utility player he could be
- Lambert looks like he is slowly adapting to our style and how the manager wants him to play - it will take time, but we are seeing progress
- Emre Can is looking very reasonable, can't believe he is 20
- Mignolet did well with the penalties (and was blameless for both City goals)

Negatives
- Conceded 2 very sloppy goals
- Enrique's positioning was abysmal and left us completely exposed multiple times
- Johnson same problems as Enrique
- Coates' inability to turn quickly exposed us a few times though he does read the game well and is comfortable on the ball
- Kolo was dropping too deep all the time and because of this we had no discernible defensive line
- Sturridge looked isolated and ineffective - it is only pre-season so no need to look into that too deeply

It was an entertaining game played at a good tempo for a friendly, thought City had an extra bit of quality going forward (Navas was excellent) and that Fernando kept a lid on Coutinho. Henderson's willingness to run everywhere was key and Sterling's introduction really unsettled their backline. Interesting game with lots of positives. Felt sorry for Joe Allen -the only thing he seemed to be doing for the entire game was covering our fullbacks who had went walkabout. Obviously if we do sign a left back and have Flanagan/Kelly as our right back options we won't need to worry about that as much. All in all pleasing - most importantly for a pre-season friendly no injuries.

Believable5 Unbelievable3

Kelly? Looked good? Take of your red tinted glasses he was abysmal! Coates was a beast though

Agree1 Disagree4

I'd agree with most of that. Not so sure about Kelly on that performance, Robinson had a good go and Lucas once again looked good when he came on.

It would also have been nice to play on a pitch that way playable on both sides. It seems odd that these games are on converted basesball grounds; can we not use amereican football grounds or better still actual 'soccer' pitches.

Agree2 Disagree0

Agree with your post here Seano but would also say its a friendly of course and we as fans will always analyse the whole game - What I liked was we managed fitness really well I thought - We didn't get caught up in what kind of game it was playing man city but yet we weren't prepared to lose if that makes sense - The last 10 minutes were City looked exhausted we jut turned it up a notch - Loved seeing that - Although its probably not the case it just made it look as if we had been toying with them for 60/70 minutes treating it like a friendly but then had the attitude to say your not going to win though - Look at the times of the goals we scored - Straight after them everytime

Agree1 Disagree0

@LionRed - I know he didn't offer much going forward but he defended well on that right hand side as well as covering for a positionally suspect Kolo Toure; for those who like attacking fullbacks then Kelly probably isn't going to win many admirer's but personally I like the fullback to be good defensively first and foremost - in that respect I didn't think he did much wrong.

@PMT - Yeah that's fair enough, maybe I'm giving Kelly too much praise, I did genuinely think he played well (from a defensive stand point). Thought Robinson was decent but got skinned a number of times (albeit by Navas) so in my opinion he was not great but not terrible either, somewhere in the middle. I agree as well these pitches have been atrocious, they should be far better.

@cialbray - yeah I understand your point mate and largely agree, we clearly weren't firing on all cyclinders for much of the match, I just thought City had a bit more quality though we were never outclassed by any means and, considering we were also playing a lot of fringe players, we did well. I was pleased overall - though its just a friendly there are a lot of positives to take from the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

With a scratch defence we were second best in the first half. Lambert & Sturridge didn't link that well. Second half we were much better. I thought GJ played well - most problems came down the other side and he joined in with the attacks better than the other three FBs. Henderson showed great energy but poor touch and Sterling was the main man by some distance. Couts looked good on the ball but didn't do enough with it for me. Easy on the eye but no real product most of the time. But it was a friendly, we won and no injuries which means we are more happy than sad. On the pitch. What next. A game on the ice?

Are we interested in the Norwegian youngster Martin Ødegaard? He is only 15 yo, and have already played over 10 games in the best norwegian league, and even for the defending Champions. Ilori is recovering from an injury and Coates has been heavily involved in all of our pre-season games.

There are reports today that both are being linked with loan moves to Deportivo.

Agree2 Disagree0

Coates looked calm and assured with the ball and his defending, making some good interceptions.

But getting isolated one on one clearly highlights his lack of pace. On the whole he did well seeing his job was made even more difficult by Enrique who had a poor game.

Agree2 Disagree0

Coates did ok but when confronted with a player of pace he looked very flat-footed and a little out of his depth. In fairness to Coates he had to contend with Toure dropping about 5 yards deeper than him throughout as well as having Enrique completely out of position and miles up the pitch for the entire first half. He is just too slow in my opinion however he was not helped by his fellow defenders what so ever last night.

Agree1 Disagree2

31 Jul 2014 13:11:22
I thought he done very well but a bit worried how deep we defended as a unit.

Agree0 Disagree0

James Pearce has a report on his performance, and I agree with his assessment that Seba has been quite solid and reliable. Will he be able to force his way into the team? That's a different story all together. But he was particularly good last night.

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 13:46:24
But Tommy, if we're being honest how many of that back 4 will be playing together if playing at all for us next season? I agree though with the point you made

Agree1 Disagree0

He was solid, looks like he's got a point to prove. The slow and lethargic panicky centre back seems to have got a bit more of an attitude attacking the ball and seemingly believes in himself a bit more i'd say.

I know it's ''just pre-season'' but Coates (in my opinion) has never looked so good or sharp for us whilst playing.

He's most likely on the chopping block and his Liverpool days may well be numbered due to Rodgers wanting to play the high-D line which is maybe too much an ask for Coates but he's looked so much better since coming back from that horrific injury. Or, at least in my opinion whatever that's worth. :)

I didn't think Kolo had too much of a bad game mind

Oh how do you solve a problem like our full backs?

Last night showed that unless we go to three at the back (not a bad shout with Skrtl, Lovren, Sakho as the 3 - but it is a system that can give up the midfield), we are well short of what we need. Assuming we generally will play a back 4, the following is looking likely.

Flanno - almost the first name on the team sheet, as he is the only FB with youth, drive, passion and the ability to defend against a winger. And he is far from perfect.

Johnson - where has he gone? Is his head somewhere else? Poor in decision making, not tracking back, got skinned by their FB on a 1-2. He has become almost the worst choice of the other 4.

Kelly - sadly it seems the injuries have affected him. He didn't seem lost for pace, but he just seems to have the attributes of a much younger defender, naivety, poor challenges, etc. I hope I'm wrong, but I think this tour will be his last for us.

Enrique - I thought he did well against Navas in 1 to 1's, but his positional play meant that when he bombed forward, and we lost the ball, he was missing. To be fair, if we had a 'proper' DM, that position would have been covered. The likes of Mascherano would have got across to Navas, but we don't really have one. We have SG, shoe-horned into a role not suited to his tired legs.

Robinson - showed desire, but got skinned so often I would be surprised if he was trusted against a quality winger again. Decent in possession though.

McLaughlin / Smith must be seen to not have the ability to break through, as they could do no worse than the present incumbents. Maybe they are another loan year away from being trusted at this level, but it certainly seems they won't be breaking through.

Call me crazy, but Aly Cissokho would have done a decent job last night. He CAN tackle.

Last night must have shown the owners the need for a LB, and BR must see Flanno as his first choice RB.

That's my conclusion. Get the best quality defensive LB we can for the money if we are to play 4 at the back.

Believable7 Unbelievable4

31 Jul 2014 12:25:35
Can't disagree with any of this .

Johnson drives me mad , all that ability and not an ounce of application . He is fast becoming an embarrassment and , with only 38 League games to go until the end of his contract , I am sure that the club are doing all they can to move him on .

Where's Harry Redknapp when you need him?

Agree11 Disagree1

Agree with all the points EXCEPT the part wit Masch. You don`t buy a DM to cover for poor fullbacks. If your fullbacks are poor, you replace them w/ FULLBACKS and not w/ DM`s.

Agree5 Disagree1

Agree with the DM is what we need so that the wing backs are not found wanting when the move up the pitch

Agree0 Disagree3

Thought Kelly did well, most of the trouble came up the left hand side. Enrique was at fault but he has been out for ages his positional sense has always been poor. Can't see him as any more than a squad player, a left back is needed.

Johnson should've been sold years ago, he doesn't even seem to have the attacking impetus that meant we could overlook some of his defensive mistakes anymore.

Agree6 Disagree0

Calling you crazy as requested. Cissokho was not great.

If we are not able to buy Moreno, as he is noted as first choice. Then I think Enrique, Robinson and Flanno would be good enough.

Robinsons comments on his loan last season sounds positive in his progression. Training around Rodgers and our squad should improve his game. I guess it's the pace that cannot be given to a player, but maybe improved awareness would cover that? It has with some of the best CBs.

Agree0 Disagree2

Crazy man talking

Agree2 Disagree0

I wouldn't disagree about getting a quality left back but to me the current senior full backs along with Skrtel appear to be the main issue.

Even with three at the back if one drops deep (aka Skrtel) and the 2 full backs are both playing as wingers we will still have the team spread over the pitch that good teams will pick us off / play between our lines.

Three at the back may also stop some of our pressure / attacking play as although Gerrard drops back he also moves forward in a more attacking position when we have the ball.

Watched game just now on recorded. Thought played well, really well as it's not our first team etc.

Thought both goals were great bits of play, build up and finishing compared to two scrappy goals

Overall really impressed with our squad. Nice to see Kelly&Enrique back and fit. Coates looked great too, tad slow but reads the trouble and got great tackles in. Like to see him given a chance.

Lambert unlucky. Sterling&Coutinho look class. Great runs in from Henderson.

All feels positive. If we could not find the right players and had to go with what we have I'd be confident and look again in Jan.

Only bad player for me was kolo, he looked sluggish and got caught out of position a few times

Agree2 Disagree3

I thought Toure and Coates were poor if i'm honest. Coutinho continues to be wasteful in front of goal. Lambert should have scored, not unlucky. Sterling is superb, Henderson has real energy and it wasnt Citeh's first team either. Really good game tho. Both Citeh's goals were really scrappy. Ours were beautifully crafted. Mom Sterling.

Agree1 Disagree2

Sterling looks very confident and I think he will have another good season with a good haul of goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thought Kolo had some moments of poor decisions Suarezchomper but in general he was tidy and in the right place.

If I had to choose a bad player from last night it would be Allen. When City broke on us he was slow to get back. I find out of every ten passes 7 are intercepted due to being poor or without required pace. Unless it's an easy short pass, his is the last touch before possession is lost. I'd like to think he'll only be back up to Gerrard, Henderson, Can as our 3. Lucas, Lallana and Suso also ahead of him.

Agree3 Disagree0

Completely agree with your comment on Allen. I thought he was god awful yesterday, I cannot think of a single effective input he made all game. He just quite simply got overran in every aspect of the midfield. Definitely bottom of the midfield pile for me to be honest, wouldn't mind seeing him moved on with his place given to Rossiter or maybe Teixeira playing in a central role.

I don`t know what game u and others, were watching. City were the better team and held possession very well, creating more chances. Their movement was very good and Jovetic, Navas and especially Fernando were brilliant. In particular, Fernando blew me away with his strength, passing ability and speed. Our formation was poor in the first half and we lost the ball too much. BUT we were better in the 2nd half and showed grit and passion to come back and win the game. All in all, ag VERY good workout.

I thought that the City game was one of the best pre-season games I have witnessed. We obviously still need our left back position sorted out, unless of course Brendan decides to go three at the back and play with wing backs. I hope we are still interested in Moreno, as he would be suited to a back four, or playing at wing back. Enrique and Johnson would be better off with three at the back, and we wouldn't need Gerrard playing the holding role.
The guy has been a complete legend for this club and will be talked about in the Dalglish, Billy Liddell way. The Istanbul come back never would have happened if it wasn't for him driving us on. Olympiacos, "header, for Gerrard" "Ohhhh ya beauty. What a hit son, what a hit." 90th minute strike against west Ham, "Take a bow son, take a bow!" An absolute Legend.
I will always remember him for them three moments and his goals and Celebrations against the Bitters and the Mancs of course. A true Legend.
I am not going to say but.
I would like him to finish his last season with us, which it should be by the way, coming on with 30 minutes to play, in every home game. Doing what he does best driving us on, playing them forward passes, shooting from the edge of the box. And of course stepping up and taking a penalty.
I am not comfortable watching him play the holding role and to be honest, I have never been a fan of finding a role for someone to play, so he can still be on the pitch. The holding role is a specialist role Mascherano, Hamann, Lucas before Injury. Whelan latter years. We should let Stevie play his game further forward and not worry about defending. And even if its for the final third of every game, I think he will give us a lot more to smile about.
I don't think we need to play with a holding midfielder, certainly not at home, Can and Henderson alternating together, one breaking and one sitting would be perfect. Lucas came on for Gerrard last night and found himself on the edge of Citys box and putting Sterling in to score.
And my point, Stevie should finish his career with Liverpool doing what he does best and even if it's only for 30 minutes every game. Driving us on not defending or covering the back 4.YNWA

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Well said Jiminy
I wouldn't restrict him to 30 minutes but I agree with everything else you said. Gerrard still has a role pinging in crosses from the right. like the rafa role he had. he could play this 60 mins a game

Agree1 Disagree0

I agree with a lot of this. If we play 3 at the back (Skrtl, Lovren, Sakho) we can accommodate attacking FBs. In that scenario, the holding midfielder isn't needed.

Last night showed exactly how SG is not suited to that role with a back 4.

If we don't buy anyone else this summer, the first team in a 4-2-3-1 should be JF, DL, MS, JE (as the 4), JH, EC (the 2), RS, AL / PC, LM (the 3) and DS.

I see no place for SG in that against he stronger teams.

I remember Bryan Robson as the best English midfielder of his day, who scraped a title medal at the ned of his career as a bit-part player, as fitter players took over his role. I hope the same happens to SG, so he gets the medal he deserves. Sadly, if BR perseveres with him in this role I would be very surprised if we get near the title, as the top teams will overrun us in midfield.

My favourite part of this post is where you talk about how you shouldn't try and find a hole for players to play in and that CDM is a specialist position. And then link your proof of that to Whelan who you freely admit moved to that role in his later years. Just like Gerrard is doing. Quality 'thinking'

Agree3 Disagree1

I disagree.

At the beginning of last season I think everyone was thinking Gerrard was finished and when he moved into a more defensive position people were not too sure; but he had a very good end to the season - we won 12 of our last 14 games; gerrard (all be it a lot of penalties) scored lots as well as creating lots.

I think a lot of fans now appreciate how Rodgers wants his teams and players to play (potentially moving roles) - Gerrard can still do this; I wouldn't quite call time on his career as yet.

Agree0 Disagree1

Whelan wasn't played as a c entral midfielder, he was actually left midfield and moved to central midfield when a place became available, just like Carragher moved from full back to centre back.He was about 26 not 34 when he started playing that role. He had 3 great seasons doing that role and then 3rs of injuries He was 33 when he left the reds.I love the way some fans like to pick holes in what people post. Pretty sad really.

Some observations from last night
1-What a finish by Henderson
If he continues like that throughout this season I can surely see him breaking into double figures
2-Just how good is Sterling
I would really like to see him upfront with suarez where he can run with pace at defenders
and the ease with which he goes past people
that goal which was disallowed absolutely sublime
3-Sturridge really needs to work on his penalties
twice I have seen him take penalties for us this year and both times he has just blasted it
4- Johnsons positioning is just getting worse he can't even beat his man
5-Emre Can is a beast

Believable6 Unbelievable0

With respect to your second point. I think we would all like to see him play with Suarez - but we have to let that one go now - the ship has sailed - he is gone! Lol ;)

Upfront with Suarez? Your either reminicsing about a recent past or have been on the moon for the last 6 weeks! Haha

Agree1 Disagree0

Great Post Reet,

Would love to see the VC band given to Henderson personally - Boy is getting better & better, Sterling showing class again and sounds nice thinking of him and sturridge up front just not 100% sure about it for some reason although his finishing is now great as well so no reason not to test it, Johnson topped it of for me when Jovetic went past him by the by line and johnson stopped and watched - Never abuse any of our players but can't wait for the lazy ******* to be moved on!
Just an extra point we missed - We really need a new LB as neither Enrique or Robinson could handle Navas last night

Agree2 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 10:38:44
1] Agreed, great goal
2] Didn't realise we had kept Suarez, lol. but I agree with the general sentiment
3] I think Studge is looking a little frustrated on the tour (he thrives by scoring) but I don't care if he can never score a penalty if he gets his scoring 'mojo' on again this coming season as SG and RL are both brilliant penalty takers
4] GJ did not have the best game in the world but he and young Robinson were far more effective than Enrique and Kelly from the first half. that's not saying any of them were bad but the combinations BR tried have yielded some clear successes and failures, and,
5] He truly is a beast of a player and I'm literally looking forward to seeing his development with us because I think we've honestly struck gold with the lad.

Agree0 Disagree0

1. Couldn't agree more, Henderson was brilliant once again. I firmly believe he is on the verge of becoming our best player. Virtually everything goes through him, he dictates the tempo we play and his work-rate is infectious. I think he should be our vice captain.
2. The boy is going to be England's star player in the next year or two. He has everything to be one of the top players in the world. If he continues to progress at this rate we could be looking at a future club legend. Only thing that worries me though is if he continues to improve at this rate we may be fending off Barca or Real in the next few years.
Phenomenal finish for the disallowed 3rd!
3. Very poor penalty, no striker should be leaning back when taking a penalty, they know better than anyone else how important it is to keep your body over a shot.
4. Awful, just awful!
5. Knew nothing about him prior to signing, but am now starting to understand the comparisons to Ballack and Schweinsteiger. The boy is made for the Prem.

Just read the thread about reina down the page, he is the best keeper at the club and fit the current playing style well, he plays like a sweeper which would allow us to play a high line, as we don't have enough pace at the back to play that way.

Reina should apologise for his comments and rogers should have the good grace and humility to accept, its gall about what's best for the team, and not about petty arguments. But he was right about rafa being the better manager though, that is fact and can't be disputed

Believable0 Unbelievable23

{Ed001's Note - seriously? How is it fact? It is your opinion, there is no fact about that kind of thing. Talk about idiotic comment, of course it can be disputed.}

Yeah, like most of your posts, another controversial post that most will disagree with.

Rafa is the past as is Reina.

Waro, long time no post, that iv read. This one is up to your usual standard though!
Rafa's reign was good but he lost his way toward the end, he sold Alonso to try and get Barry, and then failed.
Its your opinion but each manager has their strengths and weaknesses. Rodgers is a man manager and Benitez was a technician.

Agree0 Disagree0

How can it be disputed ed001? He may eventually surpass rafa's achievements, but as things stand rafa is the proven better manager. So take your jesters hat off you dope

Agree0 Disagree13

{Ed001's Note - grow up, you are just beyond a joke.}

Which part will most disagree with ag?

Agree0 Disagree7

I agree that Reina is the better all round keeper in the squad, but what he's done and said has created an unworkable relationship with BR.

To be fair the club wants rid because of his wages and attitude, not his ability, otherwise he'd be first choice without a doubt.

Reina will leave. We have 2 very good backup keepers in the squad in Jones and Migs, but there is still a need for a top class keeper.

As for who's the better manager, does it matter? Both are great in different aspects of their job, but it's playground stuff really.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

If Reina does stay it will be interesting to see who Rodgers uses if Mingolet got injured. I know who my money would be on, and he is not an Aussie! Rafa has certainly had more success, so far. That could change of course with a league title under Brendan's belt. ;-)

Waro is back hello. Hello.

one of waros posts came over to our Liverpool banter. Co.uk site
it was up to his standards:-D

Agree0 Disagree0

Ha! Waro just forgot to add that Dossena is the greatest left back in the known world and we should go for him now.

Agree1 Disagree0

Waro believes Reina is better suited than Migs and I think he has a point on playing style.

He means Rafa is better than Rodgers because he's won more, has more experience and has been successful in multiple countries and also won a trophy in hideously difficult circumstances at Chelsea. In the sense that this is true it is a fact not an opinion. Rodgers has done well but he's still learning and remains trophy less.

Would I want Reina in goal? No. Do I want Rafa over Rodgers? No.

Waro might have phrased it better but his points are perfectly valid surely.

Agree0 Disagree1

Waro, once in a blue moon you post something decent, this is not one of them. I read your post on the other site and am still not sure you are actually an LFC fan? You are negative and ignorant in half your posts and need to seriously grow up. Unless of course you are simply a WUM who enjoys the attention? Reina wanted to ditch us. It fell through and now he is sorry? Do you honestly believe Shanks would have brought him back in to the fold, or for that matter Sir Bob? On paper he is a better 'all round' keeper. However in reality he had two awful seasons for us before going to Napoli where he was crap. So bad that Rafa doesn't want him. He is LFC history now. I thank him for his contribution, but we need to sell him and move on!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Sir Bob was legendary for his ruthlessness, no player messed him about and stayed, no matter who they were. Reina would not have been loaned out under him, he would have gone on a permanent deal for whatever we could have got and we would have moved on.}

What about that goal last night lads? The dinked cross, Hendo's cushioned pass, Raheems first touch on his left foot and that second to finish with his right! My god, you don't see many better team goals than that. A total of 4 touchs from 3 different players to take it from the corner flag to the back of the net! Mingolet was excellent in the shootout btw.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

Agreed EMS. Henderson's goal was lovely too. got to give plaudits to Coates too, wasn't expecting him to come back into the squad and look so composed. His anticipation of movement of attackers seems to have improved, and he's picking his head up and laying off some great passes to clear danger.

I'm still of the opinion that Raheem has the potential to score 15+ this season. I'm not saying he will, just that if he keeps a cool head and his finishing keeps improving on the trajectory it has been so far then he is going to be a serious threat.

Very, very glad we've bought Can. Gerrard has adapted well to the DM position yesterday, however it seems he struggled slightly to get back when Navas was skinning Enrique. Can will bring added speed in to cover that ground when necessary, early days but his acquisition seems like an astute piece of business.

Lucas scoring the winning goal? He must be having flashbacks to his Gremio days when he was knocking them in!

Agree2 Disagree0

Emre looked impressive, did you notice how BR asked if he would take a penalty last night, and he seemed completely non-chalant, something like "Sure, no prob", I really liked the attitude. Sterling is genuinely starting to turn me, he could well turn into a beast, completely changed the game. Robinson should not play for the club again, very disappointed with him; a tad worried about Sturridge not being in best of form, but he still brings enough on the table. Fullback issue needs to be addressed, what are your thoughts on Kelly guys? He is showing a good attitude, but we are in trouble each time he leaves an opponent behind him, he compensates with sliding tackles but this is a risky strategy. Still, would like to see him given a chance, also in CB.

Agree0 Disagree3

Great game last night! What would we think about pushing raheem up top?
4-3-1-2 formation
Midfield 3 being Gerrard/Henderson/Can

Coutinho just infront with Sterling playing around Sturridge with DS being the main man upfront - Think it could maybe work

Agree1 Disagree0

Its coates reading of the game that made him an exceptional prospect. Sadly he's rather lumbering. I've only watched highlights as I had the gf round and she insisted on seeing the new planet of the apes film.
I liked the fluidity in the highlights though and as you say, that goal looked like it came so naturally to them.

Agree1 Disagree0

I would be worried if Sturridge was using his best form all up in these preseason games mate, not his lack of form!

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 13:40:52
It was Lucas' cushioned pass, but I agree with everything else. Two scrappy goals conceded (which doesn't worry me as we didn't have our first choice back 4 out) countered by two goals out of the top draw. Jeez I'm excited for the new season!

Agree0 Disagree0

Also add Sterlings second goal and the passing involved, only a slow linesman got it wrong. It was onside.

Some of the mazy runs and clever through balls by Coutinho last night and most preseason games remind me of Beardsley.

Also agree with Can. Looks a very clever signing. Surprised now, seeing as scouts from the same group of clubs we're always up against in the transfer market, did no one else bid? Looks like a steal.

I've seen lots of praise for Coates recently so was looking forward to see how he performed against Man City and I have to say I was slightly disappointed. He's always been slow so I'm not going to make too much out of the fact he was beaten for pace on numerous occasions, but with slower center backs they usually make up for their lack of speed by having good positioning and reading of the game, but I have to say last night Coates showed no sign of being able to do either. He was constantly out of position, recklessly diving in for challenges and missing the ball and I personally don't see why he's still getting the praise that I've seen after that performance last night. Just interested to see what other posters felt he played like against City?

Believable4 Unbelievable3

He looked good against slow paced opposition. The first high tempo game and it was like watching a fish out of water. Last night just reconfirmed for me that he belomgs in Italian football. Good player, but not for us.

Agree3 Disagree0

He's still a kid, needs regular games n confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I disagree, he has no shortage of confidence at all, quite the opposite. His problem is a lack of pace and that he takes 20mins to turn round.}

31 Jul 2014 10:29:16
Totally agree, we were a different team as soon as Sakho replaced him. I hope the lad is bought by a good team that will utilise his strengths but he is unfortunately not the kind of player that will thrive at the new LFC.

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 11:53:59
Lads I think you should lay off this boy,
he hasn't played many games in the last two seasons, and while I agree about the pace issue,I still noticed some very good tackles in our box when we were under pressure.
Although he's not in our top 4 centre halfs, he's very useful to have for thes early round cup games. (i don't forget oldham 2 seasons ago btw)
The lad just needs a bit of support and we should give him that while he's at the club, I also like his demeanour, seems like a goo

Agree2 Disagree0

Coates is very good defender and will have a good career. Problem is that his style does not suit the defensive system we play. If he goes to Italy were defences play deep, he could be good. But w/ us, he`s too slow and will struggle mightily in the PL.

Cheers and Happy birthday!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - my personal opinion is that it is little more than a training routine to get players close to match fitness. So I would read nothing into performances at all, that only matters when their are points or trophies on the line. I prefer not to watch preseason games, it gives a false idea of a player. Players like Voronin look like world beaters and get your hopes up for nothing!
Having said that, Robinson and Coates have impressed the staff, though both are in the shop window to be sold, and are just playing for a move really.
Thank you for the birthday wishes.}

I agree with the Ed about pre season, but the game last night was entertaining, I think both teams didn't want to lose. Yes the priority is to get them fit, but you could see us dig deep when we were losing the match. It was great to see it meant so much to us and at the death we were going for the win.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mmmmn, yes and no. A win over City on penalties can't do any harm can it. Granted I'd rather beat em in the league.

Agree1 Disagree0

I would only have watched preseason games in the past due to being desperate to watch a bit of football but with the world cup this summer I don't really see the need. If I recall correctly didn't Aspas knock in 4 goals during preseason last year.

Eds001

I guess first things first, I should wish you a happy birthday chief. and there it is.

I'd like to ask you your opinion.

Before I do, I'd like to a make point. Personally, I think what BR, his back room staff, and FSG, have done for the club since the Hodgson era, is absolutely nothing but exceptional.

I remember sitting in my season ticket seat, of 28 years on the first game of the season under Hodgson aginst Arsenal, joey cole getting sent off and konchesky at right back. I felt empty inside.

In the last two years I've seen a hungry young coach, who, all on his own has learnt 3 different languages to throw dedication to the cause, and has been invited by Del Bosque to join in on Spanish international camps to continue to learn his trade, surpass all expectations.

He has brought a modern day footballing philosophy to the club, a grass roots philosophy, where egos and £250k a week wages have no place, where wearing the badge means you will run through brick walls. He has created a squad of hungry young talented footballers who play, quick attacking, attractive football, but where the centre forward will spill blood to cover his right back in the defensive formation.

Personally, and above all I feel there is a real working class unity back at Anfield, the kop and there songsmiths are in full voice again. He is making the people happy, and believe.

Having said all that, this is my question.

If, and it is a hyperthetically if, if the likes of a Rick Parry had gone with the Dubai investment capital in 2007, rather than selling to, well you know who. and we had a backing like Chelsea and City, and were in the elite transfer list of buying James Rodriguez for £70m, or bale, or falcao, or any other over priced, half decent player. (ps I don't own a console so this isn't Fifa fever) but you get my point right?

Maybe we won have won the league and knocking on the door of the champions league final again. Maybe my season ticket would be £3k this season, and I would have never heard of Jon Flanagan, sterling, Kelly, Ibe, Suso, Texeria, robsister. they would all be playing in the lower leagues I guess

So, would you have rather seen vulgar success like that. bearing in mind I'm talking 2007 onwards. or the natural, grass roots, working class success, we are about to embark on?

I know buck is still young, and still learning, his conferences are getting better, rather than "clunk" that came out of his mouth at first, like prince Philip esque

But I feel we are on the cusp off greatness, and above all, it's being done right. We on own football, not the Arabs, not the Russian oil and gas business

We own it, the working class fans

YNWA JTF 96

Thanks in advance, happy birthday :)

Believable8 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - first off thanks! Secondly, the recession hit Dubai hard when it came, so we would not have been any better off under them really. While they have made a lot of changes to protect investors etc since, back in 2007 the place was in a real mess financially. I very much doubt the financial backing would have been there to work in that way. To be honest, having had the chance to speak to a couple of guys who were involved with the DIC bid, a year or two prior to it going in, I very much doubt they would have worked that way anyway. They were looking to get in, build a new stadium and then get out, being totally honest. That was their plan and it was a 7 year one, if I remember correctly.}

Great post Cookie76. Pump your chest out words!

I too thought the same last year sitting in my season ticket seat in the Kop. But I am glad we have FSG in charge and are not ruled by someone who treats the club like a toy.

I am not a religious person in any way shape or form, but there is a little thing in the back of my mind which wonders if things happen for a reason. What I mean is, did Liverpool fans have to go through the pain and heartache that was the H&G/Hodgson horror-show to re-find ourselves as a club.

Prior to BR appointment I had numerous arguments/debates with fellow supporters that the passion and belief had gone out of our fans. It got to the stage where I was getting angry and having full blown arguments with my fellow supporters in the Kop who did nothing but criticise every player with a Liverbird on his chest, make fun of players coming on/off (laughing and cheering when Lucas was taken off, can remember what game) and some couldn't even be arsed singing YNWA (can't understand how any Liverpool supporter can go to Anfield and not sing that)!

I lost count of how many opposition teams supporters sang 'where's your famous atmosphere' and we didn't ever retort!

It was like the fight had gone out of the fans and they had accepted it!

But now the passion is back, the fire has been re-lit and Anfield roars no matter who the opposition is! The scenes around Anfield before the Sunderland match and the remaining home games were fantastic, and I'm sure the players will remember those scenes for the rest of their lives! It's things like this which can make these players go that extra mile and achieve greatness as they will want to repay the love, affection and support we have given them!

In your jobs, ask yourselves this, would you react better to criticism and ridicule than praise and belief? The simple answer is no!

I can't wait till Sunday 17th to be back in the Kop singing myself horse and watching my beloved Red Men.

Support the players and believe in them.

We are the twelfth man!

Ricardo Rodriguez
Son Heung-Min

Believable0 Unbelievable10

While I don't think they will happen, a very interesting 3 to select. I like all three but have only really seen their world cup performances so don't have any real knowledge but a nice change from the norm and I wouldn't imagine completely out of sense at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't think Ochoa will happen, Rodriguez would be welcomed but again very unlikely. I really like Son Heung-Min but we don't seem to have shown too much interest in him for some time - I would be surprised (but happy) if we did bring him in.

Agree0 Disagree0

I had my young apprentice with me this morning while I was driving and he wanted to look on my phone to read this site. We had been discussing players we'd like to see come in and he has taken what I said and posted it as my own rumour
I DO NOT think this will happen
Wouldn't mind though

Anybody else feel that we are playing way too many preseason friendlies? I am just worried that the players might feel a little jaded towards the business end of the season. I think 5 games would have been enough.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

We looked the stronger team in the last 15 minutes against citeh

I think he's got it about right so far, giving all as far as reasonable, a run out

Lyes Houri, a young French midfielder has been at the Academy on trial. We are negotiating with Valencinnes and are close to bringing him in.

great game. 2nd half was brilliant. henderson and sterling were impressive. fantastic energy from both and finishing as well. if henderson can frequently finish like that then we don't need to think about gerrard's replacement when he retires. as bertrand has gone to southampton, it will be interesting to see who will be our left back next season. eds do you think rojo, alex sandro or any other will be persuaded now as our number two left back target has moved?

Does anyone know if the club or Rodgers has given an update on markovic? Was he injured for the city game? How long will he be out?
I've seen someone post on twitter he's out for 6 months hopefully that's not the case.
Cheers

Lavezzi Rojo & Medel

If we got those three we would have had the best transfer window ever and a serious chance at winning the league.

Every problem area sorted and gives our wide forwards like Ibe and Markovic 2 or 3 years to progress before having to replace Lavezzi.

Believable2 Unbelievable9

Agree'd but won't happen

Agree2 Disagree0

I know but we're already in dreamland compared to 4 or 5 years ago come on dream with me!

Agree1 Disagree0

Go along with those 3. I think BR might go bony and lavezzi u no. LB defo come in but not sure we will go another DM.

How good does Can look though :-) think Allen will b restricted once more this yr

Agree1 Disagree0

Personally I wouldn't have lavezzi. He runs around like a headless chicken half the time

Hi eds and reds
utterly confused with the whole reina situation. He arrived with the rest of the squad and hasn't been injured. OK we could be trying to get rid of him, but does BR hate him or something because why isn't he getting any game time. I personally would like him at the club.
Thanks, please could you clear the situation up about pepe.

Personally I think all managers come in identify the players they don't want and Get rid if they can.

Agree1 Disagree0

What's confusing?

Reina is third choice among three keepers.

He had two torrid seasons with us then went to Napoli and basically burnt his bridges with the open letter saying goodbye and how much better he thought Benitez was than Rodgers. That season he didn't perform well, Rafa doesn't even want him anymore. We came 2nd in the league and got CL football so he's had to come crawling back with his tail between his legs and the club are trying to offload him.

He's a petulant child that didn't get what he wanted in the first place (a move to Barcelona because they extended Valdes contract for the year hoping to sign Ter Stegan) so threw his toys out of the pram last year, thought he was going to greener pastures but unfortunately his attitude isn't backed up by the ability he believes he has anymore so he's got himself into a terrible situation all of his own making.

If Rodgers doesn't like him you can't blame him. I haven't met him and still don't like him as a person for the way he conducted himself.

Agree12 Disagree2

Hear, hear!

Agree1 Disagree1

I don't think Brendan has ever trusted Pepe. Remember he was playing the media with his agent saying he wanted a move here there and everywhere whenbrendan came in. He had a preference for Barca, which never happened for him. Good management if you ask me. He wants people who are fully committed.

Agree5 Disagree0

Pepe should sit his behind on the bench and eat some serious crow. He has played lfc and BR for fools for 2 yrs and now the chickens have come home to roost. If he can`t handle it, he should ask to be released from his contract, go beg the "best manager in the world" (Rafa) to take him back at Napoli or take a pay cut and go elsewhere. Until then, he should shut it and take his medicine like a man he claims he is.

Hi everyone, with Bertrand not happening and Sevilla looking as if they won't change their minds, would you think that Brendan may give Robinson some good playing time because I believe he has quality and bags of potential? Also, not a big fan of Bony (although he is a good player) but to be honest, there really are no other strikers, what can we do?

Imo Robinson is not good enough for Liverpool but could make it at a premiership club with lower aspirations.

Agree13 Disagree1

Robinson started the second half of the game against City last night quite well, getting a good chance and attacking well, however, anytime Navas ran at him he looked lost. Personally, I don't think he will make it as a Liverpool player but I would love for him to prove me wrong.

Agree7 Disagree2

Yeah I agree with 'You' on this one mate - Tonight Enrique still looked poor (Put that down to getting back to fitness) and although Robinson was good going forward, Defending he was quite woeful - So that's not to say he's not got potential but gave a good chance to look at how he could cope with the like of Navas etc and in my opinion he just isn't ready for that level just yet - Watchin the game tonight I would imagine a LB will be signed immediately as we looked weak - And I think another striker isn't far away as Lambert is definitely a back up to Sturridge as second half sturridge was a different player up top on his own

Agree3 Disagree0

Guys, we have SERIOUS issues at the FB positions. GJ and Jose were awful and if our defence is going to get better, it`s not w/ these two guys. It was open season for Navas, Kolarov, and Sincair (of all people). BR need to sort it out ASAP or we will b in a world of hurt.

Agree0 Disagree1

Maybe another loan to accompany our RB and that way we can see if our potential LB's are good enough or we need to buy.

I prefer to get genuine transfer rumours but I don't think it works that way.

"Happy Birthday Ed001!"

"Ed001: Thank you mate, by the way we are in for Torres, Alonso, Mascherano. Oh and the rumours of Jay Rodriquez and Marco Reus are true as they would definitely pass our simplistic medicals. And maybe Hulk Hogan. maybe."

So Bertrand gone to Saints, Moreno not happening, Rojo not happening. Anybody got any ideas for our priority left back signing? Unless we sticking with what we've got of course. You have any ideas Ed as to what we might do now?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I totally agree with you, what's going to happen? Moreno or Rojo would have been really fantastic signings and there is still chance to get them but its slim. So yep who are we now after? :/

Agree1 Disagree0

Rojo and Moreno still available. Need to have better than we currently have at the club for full backs. Like Sakho and Lovren as CB and keep skirtel as back up. Please not toure though.

I am very happy with the business our great club has got done so far it was a bit disappointing what happened with remy but I think that could be a blessing in disguise if we can cash in on borini £14mil is a great price for a player that hasn't done it for us yet the chap has a great attitude but the quality just isn't there and I think he's had enough chances at top level to prove himself and that cash would go along way towards getting wilf bony in he was outstanding in the EPL last season and would be a great addition I think him a studge would put fear in any defence

Good post, but it could do with comma, period, and less negativity towards a Liverpool player.

I wouldn't call it negativity its just reality mate we wouldn't be where we are today if we were looking to hold on to players that ain't doing at top level I agree about the other part of your post though but how and ever

He picked up a little bump in training, so he has been left out of the squad for today's game as a precaution. In addition, I think BR wants a decent performance for today's game against the PL rivals, so he is going for squad with PL experience and players that have played and are accustomed to last years tactics/formation. Even man city's second stringers looked ominous in their last outing vs ac milan, (5:1); so, strong performance in this game is still necessary for the squad morale and hopes for next season.
