Looking at draxler play against man united you wonder why we opted to go for Firmino instead.

I'll only judge him after a dozen games playing at either no.10 in behind the strikers or upfront alongside Sturridge or Benteke. He looks very useful for me, just needs game time to get used to PL and to be played in his natural position.

You mean a young German has settled into a team that plays in the same league he's always played in, where his team mates speak the same language as him, in his home country, without any unfortuante injuries quicker than Firmino has settled into our team?

Who'd have guessed that?!

Draxler is a good player, but what in this universe makes one think he would fair any better under the guidance, leadership and tactical genius called BR?

Does anybody think that if Brendan Rodgers is till in charge next season any of our currently loaned out players will be added to first team squad. Unfortunately unless Kolo Toure leaves I cannot see a future for Tiago Ilori with us.

Believable5 Unbelievable6

30 Sep 2015 20:59:13
If he's still in charge next season, it will probably mean we somehow managed to win the league. So we may just keep some of the loaned out players and buy a few more

Agree13 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 21:15:58
As much as I'd like to see ilori given a chance, the guy hasn't impressed on any of his loans this far. None of us really know what he's capable of at a senior level.

Agree25 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 21:44:21
Out of curiosity how many of u have actually seen Ilori play?

I'm just asking because I've seen none of him whatsoever yet on here he's held in very high esteem.

Agree18 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 22:05:15
CTR, I doubt 90% of our fans have seen him play but people are copying Ed001. It shows respect for his opinion I suppose but this craze for someone who hasn't played a single game for us is a bit extreme. Just my opinion, I could be wrong

Agree13 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 22:08:06
Looked good in the U21 tournements and a brief cameo last preseason he looked good on the ball and quick. All pointless as Villa have buy option which they'll no doubt take

Agree1 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 23:14:29
He really played quite well at Granada, added a few assists at the club for a CB. Didn't see much of him at Bordeaux but he was injured for much of the season.

He played very well for the U21s this summer, and the fact ed001 says the coaching staff hold him in very high esteem (despite Rodgers not picking him), combined with the woeful defense and Skrtel being a liability means people want to see him play.

Agree4 Disagree1

01 Oct 2015 01:48:14
Red man, you're right many of us haven't seen him play for us so why not give him a chance to prove himself instead of loaning him out on pointless loans that prove nothing about his ability. That's all I'm asking for. Those who already think he isn't good enuff because a manager who's out of his depth doesn't pick him ahead of two of the most error prone cbs in the PL, doesn't prove a thing about his ability or if he can hack it here. We bought the kid and three years on, we haven't seen him in an LFC top. Doesn't that bother you?

Agree3 Disagree3

01 Oct 2015 01:54:41
I think fans desire to believe in illori shows their faith in young talent. It also shows how dire our defense is that we want to start a young player most of us haven't seen play over our starters

Agree4 Disagree1

01 Oct 2015 03:53:25
all this is nonsense about fans not having seen him play so who knows if he's good enough. the club spent 8 million pounds on him after being deemed good enough by scouts, Rodgers and the transfer commitee. you don't spend that money on someone unless you intend to give them a chance (unless your're Rodgers who can't be bothered to turn up to reserve games to make that call) typical of what he has been doing.

Agree4 Disagree3

01 Oct 2015 07:47:11
Didn't see him at Bordeaux but saw him at Granada and seen him a lot with Portugal U21. Simply put, he's better than Gomez right now

Agree5 Disagree1

01 Oct 2015 08:43:15
I caught a few games for the U21s before he was loaned out & he really stood out. I know I may not be the best place to judge somebody but his composure on the ball, coupled with his obvious speed to get around was impressive. He should've gotten the nod to play ahead of Gomez IMO, who also looks a good player by the way, not having a go at that young lad. But as far as Tiago goes it must be a right kick in the nuts to be told you will get game time by the manager, then they buy a guy 2 years younger who gets to start while you get shipped off for a loan while the manger is also playing other CBs who are a complete disaster. Is Ilori ready to start for us? Who knows without giving him the chance. Will he do any worse than Skertl? I really doubt it!!!!

Agree7 Disagree1

01 Oct 2015 10:45:09
He should be used as a DM for me. With his pace, he control and being such a calm young lad with the ball, great passing also. ( lots of theese attributes as a result of him being a striker but made into a CB later on. )

This would allow our team ( or any other team with Ilori ) to press higher and still be comfortable that he will pick up counter-attacks pretty easily as a buffer infront of our CBs.

I started reminicing about the swashbuckling style we played a few seasons ago and wondered what my favorite style of play is. While i enjoyed the attack attack style i despaired at the defending and wished we had a decent back line.

But i can also appreciated the balanced approach when you defend well as a team and attack as a unit like atleti a few seasons ago.

Then there is the sublime close control and flair of the barca side under pep.

Then i remember the one touch pass and move of lfc in the late 80s with great defence and awsome attack not unlike the total football played by the dutch at the time.

What are you guys favorite style of play?

Believable2 Unbelievable2

30 Sep 2015 19:06:42
I really like the pointless passing we do at the start of the season, I especially like it when skirtel and migs make a few dodgy passes which end up with migs kicking it out for a throw. I also like it when we get near the edge of box and then pass it back all the way to the defence. What is also great about this style is you have next to no efforts at goal and rarely score.

Brendan and fsg like it more than me tho.

Agree31 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 19:24:26
I love the direct, pass and move style. That is the way footie should be played. You can never have a perfect balance but teams that always try to have that will acheive some kind of balance even if it isn`t perfect. Teams can play the beutiful game and still be defensively sound for the most part. we have seen teams doing it before. it is the managers who think one has to suffer to accomodate the other that are ruining it for the rest of us.

Yes direct one touch football with wingers who will dribble, beat a man and whip a cross in for the striker.

Can't be done with all the faffing about with 6 midfielders occupying 1 metre square of the centre of the pitch tapping it 1 yard back, 1 yard sideways ad infinitum. Yawn!

Agree3 Disagree3

30 Sep 2015 20:01:06
1. If you don't concede goals, you won't lose. Obvious but organised man marking defence, everything we are not!!
2. Possession with intent to go forward (not side to side, then back).
3. Not the long ball!
4. Get in to or around the 18 yard box and actually shoot.
5. Attack, attack, attack.
6. Entertain the fans.

Agree1 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 21:47:58
Haha og i was actually tryn to have a thread that didn't mention our fav manager of the month, oh well. i'm a pass and move with a large dose of individual flair, fast flowing football where generally the ball does most of the work.

I agree ron not a tippy tappy man myself unless its late 90s ronaldinho doing it with 4 stepovers and a nutmeg.

Agree0 Disagree1

01 Oct 2015 06:10:12
I loved 2013/14 where a high energy press up the pitch, quick turnover ball and breaking forward at pace made for exciting, winning football. Requires pace and energy upfront though with Sterling/Studge/Suarez then making dangerous runs for Coutinho/Hendo to hit.

Unfortunately Rogers hasn't seemed to prioritise this approach since, with the likes of Lambert, Balo, Llalana and Benteke drafted in instead of Suarez/Sterling, clearly not targeting a high press or runs in behind the defence. I do feel we can get back there though with the likes of Sturridge/Firmino/Ings if we just continue to play as we have in the last couple of games.

To play this way however, I do also think we should fix our DM/CB problems first or we risk conceding every time they get in behind, and while Lucas is doing a good job we should probably have a younger talent at DM for the future (like Kongdogbia or Schneiderlin and assuming we're not going to gradually develop Can into that role). We also need stronger CB's who have pace and the ability to deal with counterattacks, something that seems to panic Skrtel and Lovren.

Lucas gets a lot of stick on here but I thought I'd share some data on the weekend just gone.

Lucas completed more tackles than any other midfielder in the league last weekend (8). Matic was trailing just behind (5). In fact only one other player made more tackles than Matic and that was Newcastle defender Mbabu who matched Lucas' s tally (8).

Lucas also completed more passes than any other player in the league (100). Cazorla was well behind in second place (70).

Unspectacular? Yes. But highly effective at breaking up play and keeping possession to launch attacks. Hope he isn't dropped in a couple of months when Hendo is fit again. He is first name on the teamsheet for me.

Believable28 Unbelievable3

30 Sep 2015 13:57:20
Only those who don`t really know the game or think a DM should be as flashy as a playmaker tlk crap about Lucas. The DM`s job is to be effective and nothing more and Lucas is arguably one of the top 3 in the PL right now at being effective

Agree11 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 14:05:01
IMO should be vice captain. Always liked Lucas even when he first came to LFC and struggled with his game. Love him. Good guy, good dad and a credit to the club.

Agree14 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 15:07:52
I don't think he gets a lock of stick, the argument is whether he's a top level player or just a good player. The debate around him should be does he make the team better? Sometimes he has a positive impact, other times he does not.

For me he's like Nicky Butt, a solid player that's an asset to any team but not a guy who's going to take the team to the next level. I want him at Liverpool but he's not the first name on the team sheet.

Agree4 Disagree8

30 Sep 2015 15:52:48
Juventus wanted him. That's the Champions of Italy and arguably one if the top 5 teams in Europe who considered him good enough for their side.

He does have a positive impact. He anchors the midfield and as a rule we concede less possession and less goals whilst he is on the pitch. We also have a higher win ratio when he plays. Surely that is taking us to the next level? Without him we look weak in midfield.

It's an opinions game so fair enough if that's what you think mate, but for me he is absolutely a top level player and 100% the first name on the team sheet for us.

Agree6 Disagree4

30 Sep 2015 15:54:10
Disagree but you only see how much lucas brings to the game when you watch him at the ground

Agree1 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 16:02:15
There's only one problem with him. That is when defending in the final 3rd Lucas becomes a liabilty. He leaves the the edge of the penalty area empty where oppositions midfielders easily occupy good positions and make us vulnerable. Also look hiw easily he lost his marker for the 1st Villa goal

Agree1 Disagree6

30 Sep 2015 16:09:40
Agree 100% with muscatred.

He is a decent committed player. Nothing more or less.

Good to have as a backup.

But a very good professional from whom youngsters can learn on how to conduct.

Agree2 Disagree3

30 Sep 2015 16:34:53
Hey EMS, last season we had a better win ratio with him in the team but it was worse in 13/14 (we averaged 1.83 pts from the 20 games Lucas started, 2.67 from the 18 games he didn't).

As I say I really like the guy and I'm delighted he stayed but I don't think he's as good as you think he is.

Agree3 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 16:51:55
He's far from amazing but it's not a glamorous role he plays.
Lost count how many stupid fouls he's given away In dangerous positions but I like Lucas he works hard. Scapegoat of the century when in truth he's no better nor worse than anyone else in our average squad tbh

Agree1 Disagree1

30 Sep 2015 16:59:06
I like Lucas, I think he is a great pro, I think he is our best defensive midfielder ( Can is potentially better but would be wasted there) and to top it off he seems like a nice guy
However I've never thought he was top drawer and I would have sold him to replace him with a top drawer DM

Agree3 Disagree2

30 Sep 2015 19:27:33
If Can doesn`t improve his awareness, anticipation and positioning, he will never be in Lucas` class and this is coming from a Can fan.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Oct 2015 12:16:33
Can doesn't have the nous of Lucas yet or the discipline (often gets caught out defensively) but may become a great DM at some point with some nurturing.

As to Lucas, I think he's fantastic, a great human being and fantastic servant of the club, but in situations where we face fast breaking counterattacks we look vulnerable as he's not as mobile as he was, he needs to be an to read the play early and/or have other energetic midfielders to break down play before it gets too loose.

I would play him against top 4 sides where we expect to face intense pressure (when he's invaluable), and in games with milner/hendo alongside him to help break down play, but if we have slower players like Can in midfield, and/or facing pacy counterattacking sides like Crystal Palace, I would rather have someone else more mobile.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Interesting article Ed1, do the Eds write these or are they outside contributors?

I would argue that most of the points he makes were just as applicable when we were the most successful league in Europe a decade ago and I'm not sure it's just that we've lost the fear factor.

We often think the lower teams in the PL are improving and that's why we have so many upsets in the PL but just as easily it could be that the top teams are getting worse. How many genuinely class stars does the PL boast? Hazard, Aguero and Silva? A lot of our other stars are cast offs from Barca and Madrid.

Hi reds,

Midweek loan update.

Ojo came off the bench in the 56th minute and got a goal and an assist as wolves beat fulham 3-0.

Lloyd jones played the full 90 and helped keep a clean sheet as Blackpool picked up a much needed 2-0 win against chesterfield to raise them off the foot of the table.

Williams played the full 90 as Swindon drew 2-2 with Doncaster

Maguire was not in the squad as Leyton orient lost 2-1 to Carlisle.

Harry Wilson came on as a 77th minute sub as crewe lost 2-1 to Southend. Crewe are now bottom of league 1.

Canos came on as a 70th minute sub as Brentford lost 2-0 to Birmingham.

Allan played the full 90 as senajoen lost 1-0 to HIFK.
Senajoen now sit second in the table.

I think a bit of reading between the lines is required, Swindon were obviously disappointed with his attitude, that's why he was fined. They would have wanted him to say sorry, pay the fine and promise not to do it again.

Instead they got a petulant response from him showing disrespect for their discipline process, pretty much the opposite of what they expected. I am not remotely surprised they cancelled his loan.

I hope he learns a lesson from this and doesn't walk away thinking he's the victim.

he is resuming his loan. Weird he's only got 1 clean sheet in 9 thought it was more from the updates

If an 18 year old kid turned up late for work in most other jobs, was rightly reprimanded, and then made it publicly clear that he treated the whole issue as a joke, that would set alarm bells ringing about his whole attitude.

Who the hell does this lad think he is, that he can disrespect a club who have agreed to make him part of their league campaign, by treating their disciplinary measures as a joke? He has done nothing, achieved nothing, and he acts like a big time charlie because he earns more money than the local club's own players?

It also reflects badly on lfc, but my guess is that it may be a more widespread issue among highly paid under 21s these days.

I'm annoyed that we have a lad with such a poor attitude still on the books to be honest, those are the kinds of players who can cause friction and unrest among the squad.

Actually, £50 worth of pennies is not legal tender and does not have to be accepted.

5p - for any amount not exceeding £5

2p - for any amount not exceeding 20p

1p - for any amount not exceeding 20p

hI eds got another question about our youth or under 21 teams. Since I've come out to Argentina don't see a lot of the reserve games, so who do you think is the most talented players in the youth or under 21 s thanks ed big help

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - for me Rossiter at U21 level stands out. That is why he is in and around the first team now.}

Lot of the players from the U21s have been loaned out, or sold, and currently youth team players from the U18s are being introduced into the U21 setup much faster. It is truly a state of flux with those two sides - U18s and U21s as a result.

Sorry for the pessimism, but Sinclair looked the real deal when he was at the U18s but has struggled with injuries and hasn't fully transferred his form for the U21s. Baranagan and Randal are solid players but I think they but I don't know if they have enough about them to get into the first team at LFC. I do not see any of Stewart, Jones, Vigouroux, Teixeira, Maguire, Ward making it at LFC at this time for various reasons. Williams, Cleary, Brewit look okay but don't stand out.

Centre midfielders Rossiter and Chirivella stand out as does Adam Philips at U18s. Canos, Kent and Wilson, all wingers look exciting and has the ability to step up. Ojo is doing very well on loan and might be ready for another loan next season. Fulton is the best GK in the youth setup and is the first choice for the U21s and 3rd for the senor team though he has had injury issues in the past. Danda is the stand out alongside Alexander-Arnold for the U18s.

I have not seen, but heard good things about Polgar, Madger Gomes, Ejaria, Wheeler, Adekanye, Brimmer, Herbie Kane, Toni Gomes, Lennon and Paulinho.

Thanks ag enlightening, why do you not see texiera making it from your perspective. I always had high hopes for him but he seems to have been frozen out despite have good attributes that could benefit the first team squad.

{Ed001's Note - that's probably the issue, is that he is not getting chances, as he is clearly quality.}

Teixeira is one of those players who was ignored by Rodgers. His chance came and went before we all knew it. He will turn 23 in January and playing in an U21 league as one of the overage players. Rodgers has not named him in the Europa league squad and he was not picked for the League Cup game either. I think its safe to say Rodgers has no use for him sadly.

In my opinion on our young players:

Shoes ins to make it - Rossiter, Gomez, Ibe

Good chance to make it - Ojo, Kent, Canos, Wilson, Origi, Fulton, Jones, Maguire, Phillips, Dhanda, Chirivella, Polgar

Outside chance to make it - Teixeira, Stewart, Ward, Flanagan, McLaughlin, Sinclair

Things change fast at that age though. Rossiter could have a major injury set back like Flanagan did and be replaced within 12 months.

No idea what tiexeira has done wrong maybe he has eyes on teeth's secretary lol, he had a chance ore season and looked a standout performer, as far as I remember last season he played was mom then dropped, this isn't they message we should be showing our promising young players. I'm not surprised one bit that Sinclair wants out as Suso dis before him, won't be surprised to see origi heading the same way next year as I have no idea where he fits in tho bit a bad prospect himself.

Hey Adam,

I would broadly agree with you, but have a few points of debate:

I think Ward should at least be in with a good chance after his performances at Aberdeen, coupled with the fact we have not bought a No 1 in the last transfer window.

Flanno, if he can get over his injuries, should also have a good chance - who knows what tactics the new manager will employ, and hopefully they recognise the need for a scouse-beat.

I personally think Teixeira also has a good chance, as Mick and others have said. Not a shoe-in, but a good chance.

BR has no use for any of our youth really. he only plays them when he`s either ordered to aor forced to. Tex is pure quality but won`t get the chance under this manager. Another one? Maybe.

This is for ed 1, Getting away from BR for a sec.
Has there ever been a choirmaster for the Kop ?
It saddens me that the atmosphere in Anfiled is not what it used to be. you know, when things are not going well, we sing louder, a la minute 45 at the ataturk 2005.
My personal feeling is that the fans still want to sing, but they don't know what to sing, they have nobody to lead them ! I know some will say well they're not real fans if they don't know the songs, but we are where we are. We should be singing from minute 1 to minute 95 ! What a difference that would make !

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't remember there ever being a choirmaster, but it has changed as it is difficult to sit with your mates these days. Much harder getting a song going if you aren't sat together.}

30 Sep 2015 02:50:38
Hope I don't get slated here but, maybe better than a choirmaster, perhaps due to the change in fans not being all local etc. it could be an idea to print and hand out the songs before matches or have a place where one could print there own copy to bring .Those who know them etc wouldn't need them but those who do could and would have no reason not to sing. It's my dream to go to Anfield soon but financial constraints make it impossible. I know some of the songs but not all. It doesn't make me less of a supporter just one who regrettably hasn't been able to be there.

There's never been a choirmaster, you'd just get one random guy in the crowd get up and sing something and everyone would happily join in. They're too scared these days. Like ed001 said, difficult to muster the courage when you're just sitting by yourself around people who you think may be judging you.

I remember as a young lad, on the Kop with my dad, and one of his mates, Frank Kinder, would always start the songs. He'd only get 4 or 5 words out and it would start up. It's not the same with all seater stadiums either I'd guess, though have lived away from the UK for years so can't really comment.

I think Edd & Nick have a point.
It is quite hard for a good group of you to be able to get tickets week after weeks next to each other. The guys from RAWK have been discussing the atmospher issue as well, they are suggesting a singing section. The club won't do anything to help with allocating tickets. So they have done their research and the easiest place with the least season ticket holders is the Annie Rd end blocks 127 - 129
So if you want a sing song with a load of other like minded lads get your ticket in these blocks.
Let's make a bit of noise and have some fun 😉
