No stories about the lollipop lady outside anfield overhearing KK's chauffeur as he drove by her zebra crossing etc...just an observation that not many people will agree with including certain eds. I actually think Downing is a cracking player and better that some of the other so called targets mentioned on here ala Payet, Jeffren, Elia etc. Mata aside there are not many players on the market that can deliver the balance he will bring to the side, crossing ability and goals contribution without having to fork out 30 million pounds for the pleasure or have a five syllable name ala coutinho del reyes or whatever, that the fans seem to crave. Our pass and move system means that we don't need the next Sanchez flip flopping their way down the wing on every attack making us one dimensional again, just someone who is intelligent and able to supply accurate crosses and passes to supply our attackers. KK knows this and with the likes of Adam providing through passes from the middle suddenly we have creativity and goal threat all over the park. They may not be the exotic names that some fans seem to crave, but they may be the most astute signings of this summer and could prove to be critical to reestablishing our club as a real force again. Please do let me know it you think i am overstating their importance, but I think if they come off time will justify their signings. Peace

Hey Ed, and followers.
We are clearly focussing our attentions to young players with great re-sale value, however with players like Jack Robinson, John Flannagan Martin Kelly etc... signing young players will only hinder their proggression, which is why I believe it is such a long process for the signing of our players, DC is clearly trying to find the right age where the youngster will not be blocked from proggresing, just a thought.

For crying out loud, have we all lost our minds or what? The transfer window is barely open and already people are whining because we are missing out on targets. Who are these targets? Phil Jones?? Ashley Young?? For Gods sake, so you want a player wearing our shirt who doesn't really want to play for us?

And how have they really improved? Phil Jones won't be playing yet, might make twenty games this season if he is lucky. Ashley Young...I reckon Valencia and Nani are both better. De gea (spelling?)...who gives a crap, we have Reina anyways

You have all said it, In Kenny we Trust right? Well trust the guy, and the rest of the management staff to get the players that we need and stop believing everything you hear in the media. Only certain people know the truth, most of it will be a whisper someone heard in the pub. LFC is doing things the Liverpool way, behind closed doors, the way it should be. And I'm betting that all you nay sayers will have shut up by the time the transfer market slams shut, and the Ed's & probably Macca can put their feet up, look you all in the face and say 'told you so'

You're all beginning to sound like Chavski fans...and if that isn't enough to make you change your attitudes I don't know what is

Please post this is rumours edz...cheers

All u so-called SUPPORTERS make me sick , it's ur expectancy that's making u the way u feel now . John w Henry said when he first came to the club we won't change it over night we r here for the long haul and we r building for the future . To many people surrounding them selfs with this big hype that we expect to buy the world an all it's greatest players , we will get who we can and when we can so for the 100th time chill-out and let the people at the club do ther work an if u want slate the owners , king Kenny , dc and Steve Clarke after the window has closed . .....the chef kd7 YNWA JFT96

Missing out on Clichy, a proven premiership LB whose available for 7m would be nothing short of a travesty. Even if he didn't work out as we'd hope, we would still have no problem recouping the money in a couple of years. We all want 2b sure we're signing the best possible players but sometimes ya just have to take a chance on players. Look at United, they have just spent over 50 million on a inexperienced keeper, a not yet fully proven Centre half and a lively winger who in all fairness doesn't produce enough end product and it looks like we've missed out on Clichy because we sat on d fence for too long. If we're to attract top players then we need to be on d ball, show them how much we want them and get them signed before a champions league team decides they like the look of them and swoops in for the kill.

Let me take you back, Kenny has to build a team , after people leaving, he changes our formation and gets John barnes, beardsley, ray houghton and a nomark from oxford.That team turned out to be the best lpool team ive ever seen(and ive seen a few)So what im trying to say is leave kenny to build a team and stick to sorting insurance claims, working in a bank or selling life insurance, in short have confidence in kenny and stop being ald women, like me bird...

i hope the board arent starting to talk about the stadium situation because they dont want to spend big in the transfer market the last yanks left a bad taste in my mouth nothing has made me think these r any different they have only bought 1 player in henderson as the money from torres bought sauez and carroll .

yes but the differnce is, under hicks and gillett the torres money would have went straight on the debt, now it goes straight on players so stop being judgemental, they know how too run a football club and you can tell they are genuine by the way they arnt making promises , as gillett and hicks did.

Hi guys am I wrong for starting to think that some fans are starting to ask questions about our owners and managment team when fsg and inpaticular when kk came back he said he wants to do things the Liverpool way quiet and behind closed doors and fans was finally happy now it seams these fans see missing out on targets as our owners are this dc and kk this all because nobody knows what is going on please let's just support our team and trust in our management john Henry answered questions on Twitter yesterday not many owners are willing to interact with fans like that I was lucky enough to get a reply to my question and for that I feel our future is bright sorry for the rant ed but just hate seeing all these people questioning our methods because we need support all cause we missed out on a few mediocre players wickham Jones we have better players in our acadamy Morgan suso wisdom ayala so why don't people support what we've got and forget about what other teams are doing

Liverpool have sent representatives to 'finalise' a deal for Sevilla's young right hand sided midfielder Antonio Cotan.
The Merseyside club look set to beat Chelsea and Internazionale to the Spanish teenager, after employing Spanish agent Alvaro Torres to overlook the deal.

The transfer further shows that FSG's transfer policy is buying players for the future and who will show their class in the long term.
ED(s) happy with this signing?
JamietheRed {Ed002's Note - I am by o means conviced by this story. If he is a kid, then fine, they come and go. If not, don't get the dander up of the fans.}

I've never seen wickham play , but in your opinion who shows better potential Adam Morgon or wickham.
Just watching Morgon looks to be a good one.

I have it on good authority that we have agreed a fee with Hull City for Tom Cairney. Hence the quickly arranged pre-season friendly with Hull City. This was confirmed today by Grimsby Town FC "Hull City have pulled out of the pre-season friendly game against the Mariners which was scheduled for July 23rd. The Tigers will now play Liverpool on the same day which has been arranged because of an impending player transfer between the two clubs."---------------------------------------- Ed, do you know if this is true? {Ed009's Note - I have heard nothing regarding the player I'm afraid. Whilst I see no reason to make such unremarkable information up, its probably best to treat it with a degree of scepticism for now.}

30 Jun 2011 22:49:32
Another England manager with no idea - Morgan comes on in under 17 game for 10 minutes - looks so much better than any other striker, and certainly a better prospect than Wickham.

Patience is required at this time. I have no doubts that LFC will get the players they need. This time last year the club was in a financial mess. Also due to poor decisions by Rafa and Hodgson we have been left with players that were given big contracts. They had little motivation on the pitch and they have little motivation now to play regular football with other clubs. Plus others are just rank poor and clubs are not interested.
I am confident that Kenny and the new owners will sort this out.

Ed I know a lot of people will tell me to trust kk and keep the faith, but the reality is we seem to still move too slow in the transfer Market and have missed out on our top targets so far. And the top four seem to be getting stronger I really hope fsg have something huge up their sleeves don't you? If we pay 20m for downing I won't step foot inside anfield again on principle. Ed your thoughts pls?
Dave {Ed002's Note - I am not sure what answer is acceptable to you today. I guess there is a Kenny Out, Damien Out, Comolli Out group simmering here. They will turn to FaceBook and we will give you details to sign up.}

30 Jun 2011 22:32:43
Ed I understand that we haven't had negatiations with mata nor Valencia but why not? Why are we not being more aggressive regarding getting players we want it seemed to me everything came to a standstill when kk was away Surely our plan was to have most of our players for preseason or at the very least all our Brit based players in by July 1st? {Ed002's Note - Mata has been rather busy. I have explained how Valencia dealt with the matter.}

30 Jun 2011 22:31:19
Sunderland no longer interested in N'gog as they have bought Liverpool target wickham, possibly the worst bit of business on behalf of the Liverpool board... chance to buy an up and coming superstar and off load a pile of S**t, well done DC once again now we have no wickham and no N'gog deal from Sunderland.

If Inter are interested in Raul M and it looks like he is going to be going. Why not a swap plus cash to us with David Santon. I know he's right footed but he's played most of his Inter career at left back because of Maicon. Their's been plenty of other top class right footed left backs. Scum had some t**t called Dennis being very successful for a long time. Go a bit further back and Chris Hughton had a very good career at Spurs and West Ham being a right footed left back and also being the first black man to play for Ireland.I mate that point because you can play at the top level for your whole career being a right footed left back or vice versa. Raul's going, we need a left back, and David Santon is classy enough to make that position his own. He'd be a lot more comfey then playin Glenn Johnson there and he didn't look to bad. I have said this before and will say it again. Do not expect our new owners to spend a lot this window. People are crazy if you think they will. The reality is we have a lot of expensive useless players on our books that we cannot get shot of and they will not leave. The costs ofvthese players will hinder transfers. I fir one am not bothered by missing Clichy, yes hecis quick and recovers his mistakes well, but he is far from being a class wing back and his crossing I'd nothing to right home about. Liverpool need another centre back, left back and at least one class winger. Without those signings we will not improve next season and that is reality. Let's hope we can shift dome dead wood, if not our season is over before it starts.

30 Jun 2011 22:11:53
Ed, the transfer rumours seem to gave gone quiet? Do you think there's anything in this or am I just reading into things? Lol. Thanks :)

30 Jun 2011 22:10:59
I had posted here at the end of the season that I was concerned that our lack of European football might hinder us in the transfer market and I have the feeling this may be true.

Granted some of our targets were deemed too pricey by DC & KK but others have chose to go elsewhere.

Eds/Macca, do you think that we are now having to readjust our transfer plans and go for 2nd choices are do you think that not getting our preference of english based players will force us abroad?

I would love Walcott and A Johnson to join and if not them then I think you have to look abroad for wingers of similar quality

See it's difficult to suggest that we could repeat such displays with the pressure of bring higher up the league.
The lads weren't under any 'real pressure' towards the end and really enjoyed their football. It's a different story when a league is there for the taking and hopefully this season the lads are under that pressure.

As I agree with the point of not being under the Pressure of winning the the league near the end of the season. The fact is he got them Playing with Pride and a belief that they can beat the best. The negativity at the start of the season was to great for any team to mount a serious challeng.the truth of the matter is kenny has change that , and who would of thought without Torres and gerrar (injury) we would have any chance at all, but not only a chance but a real shout of european football with the start we had.and believe me every time those players put on that shirt while sitting in the changing room and hearing the sound of the ANFIELD crowd of you'll never walk alone they fell Presure.

People need to realise when they say we have missed out on this player and that player in almost every case we were never interested in them.the media gave us these apparent target and they prob get them from players agents and clubs trying to increase the value or speed up bids from other. Any of these report meireles last year nope cuz hardly any of them know much atall.we will sign more players and i bet only one or two will be ones mentioned by the media.also all the talk of new wingers i think wel be playing 4 33 most the time next year with kuyt and suarez just behind carroll then gerrard lucas and henderson in middield and expect the lb and rb to to get forward on the wings.

"Absolute Truth"
Had a dream downing was playing for us, pulled in from the left, carried on towards the goal, we were all shouting shoot when he did and scored
Please don't take the mickey, my friends. I did dream this...dont' know what it could mean...
In the awake world: Mata and Hazard will be the 2 big names who fit the criteria set by WJHenry (young, talented and expensive)...adam still to sign...

Hi Ed, not a transfer rumour but nonetheless some quite remarkable news emerging. True to their word, FSG have been listening closely to the fans and like us, they are only interested in players who will give everything for the badge rather than those whose motivation is simply financial. With effect from the 2012/2013 season, FSG will require all first team members to change their names by deed poll either to Carragher, or to include the name Carragher. Stevie is fully behind the move but, having children already, will retain his surname and change his name to Steven George Carragher Gerard. Several other players, however, have indicated that they are willing to completely change their names both in support of the club and in order to conceal team selections and formations right up to match time.
Good times ahead. Mrs Ruben.

30 Jun 2011 20:16:00
Ed reports are saying that hazard wants to leave for psg and his coach can't understand why he wants to move there. This is the perfect time for liverpool to place a bid and try and convince him to come. ALso lille are more likely to sell as would prefer him not to play for another french club. Do you think we might bid as you always said comolli wanted to be kept informed on what was happening with hazard? {Ed001's Note - do you not think he is wanting PSG for money?}

30 Jun 2011 21:12:27
Say I'm the manager looking at players to sign who will improve the squad next season and season's to come.
I would put a cheeky offer of £35-37 million for pastore
Then a £10 million offer for Spain u21 star thiago
Fernando gago for £10 or Diego.
So there we have pastore who can play midfield or 3rd striker if you like, same as Diego. Thiago who is a great athlete and a good passer of the ball. And gago who is a fantastic tackler and has a trick or two.
Your opinions ed?
Jamie

30 Jun 2011 20:58:29
ed, have I missed something here?
We have missed out on Clichy Wickham etc.. Did anyone from the club declare any interest in either player? I know there was rumours, press stories but did Kenny or co say; yea we want this lad? I don't think so.

Nobody knows outside the club what's going on - people need to chill out like.. Our first friendly is on the 13th July.. I predict the next 11 days may well be a crucial stage in Liverpool's summer movement...

Corkpoolred {Ed009's Note - you've missed absolutely nothing mate.}

30 Jun 2011 20:56:27
Ok, had enough are we going to strengthen our reserve and under 18 with this youth policy crap and sell them on in 5 or 6 years to make a few bob while our rivals are improving and are going to improve, i for one is very skeptical about this....
Rumours Ed for feedback..

I'll be gutted if Man city sign clichy. Would be the perfect left back for us, plenty of premiership experience and good going up and down. we should go straight in with a bid of 10 Million to get him, no messing about.

Also if we can't get Mata, should go for adam johnson.

But I trust KK and I'm sure he'll pull a few class signings out of the bag. He knows a quailty player when he see's one. Just need to be patient.

30 Jun 2011 20:24:45
hi edd do you think that we havnt signed players like clichy, wickham and young for a reason because liverpool are staying quiet about who we are signing and maybe KK has other players he wants and already agreed personal terms with liverpool and could maybe be made official tomoro or next week because the international transfer window has opened? YNWA {Ed009's Note - I would not go as far as to say that we have agreed deals for any players - although I am no one to say that we haven't - but your point that our so called 'failed targets' may not be targets at all is an incredibly valid one that I would agree whole-heartedly with.}

30 Jun 2011 19:25:46
I'm like everyone else, i'm looking everyday for news of new signings, but i believe KK and DC have their targets and we will find out soon enough who they are.
I do laugh at some of the posts here, like th eone yesterday when a guy saw a Mata lookalike on a bus and gets told the guy is signing for Liverpool
I would love to see Mata, Baines, Clichy, and possibly one or two others, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
One thing is for sure, KK won't but any crap. Come the end of the new season, Liverpool will be top 4 and a lot closer to the top than people think

Clichy to city for 7mil & Nasri possibly for 20mil surely surely we can afford this for quality players like this, ED do you think the 180k which is being offered is the reason we have not made a move, i can understand that for Nasri but didnt we make a 7mil offer for Clichy also? {Ed009's Note - If Nasri does move to City I believe it will be due to his belief that they can truly challenge for the title, something which - positive as I am - isn't something we can realistic hope for. I think we have possibly dodged a real bullet with Clichy.}

30 Jun 2011 20:53:45
The reason we have grinded to a halt in the transfer market is that we have got to get rid of the dead wood first, fsg have stated we have got to trim 30mill from the rubbish we are paying first so when we start to see the sales going through that's if anyone wants them then if there is any time or targets left then we will deal, looks like last minute rush or nothing

What has happened to our interest in Swedish striker, Ola Toivonnen? Wasn't there loads of scouting done? Seemed to be a scarrier, Viking themed Andy Carrol. Didn't he score 30 goals for PSV? Do people on this site support Liverpool? No?yes? Maybe? Sometimes I wonder. To the fella that called Carroll a cart horse. What planet are you on? Do you play at anfield most weeks? Didn't think so. Yes I grant yah we paid to much but it's obvious the lad is quality. There are too many people slating everything at the moment. Just get behind the club for god sake. Ta.

Sell before we buy is basically what LFC have to do before signing the players we need. This isn't because we have lack of funds, we have plenty, but the fact that the wage bill is ridiculous. Cole £100k aw, Jova £90k aw, Ngog £60k aw, Aquilani £80k aw, El Zhar £30k aw & the list goes on. Hopefully we can shift this deadwood, but some of them may be happy to warm the bench or even just train if their getting paid more than they'd get anywhere else. Fingers crossed these misfits can f*** off soon

Been watching lfc tv most wanted in the close season and seeing us not just beat but destroy both mancs chelsea and other so called big teams.I really don't understand the panic of bringing in new players.yes we do need to strengthen certain areas ie leftback and wingers, but if we sign three players with the same energy as our first 11 we will rip the league apart next season.kenny has got them playing the football that will have them running scared every time they see that sign.THIS IS ANFIELD

I don't understand why fans are getting so agigtated about transfers and why we're missing out on these"so called" targets how do we even know that everyone of these is a real target it seems like the snowball effect 1 person says we're signing some1 then another and another KK & DC know we've got problem areas and they certainly aren't stupid enough to allow them to stay like that if you are a TRUE RED then you would'nt be complaining about KK he's not stupid but a lot of yous are. So the Liverpool supporting, it would be a dream to play for Liverpool Connor Wickham chose Sunderland over you lol says it all really especially with cart horse Carroll in the team Big team? Do me a favour your own fans don't even want to play for you {Ed001's Note - except he never had a choice to make, so how could he choose to join Sunderland over Liverpool? Liverpool never even tried to match the price.}

30 Jun 2011 20:18:28
it's horrible to refer to human beings as 'deadwood'

30 Jun 2011 20:14:10
Ed what did macca mean by this?

If you read what John Henry said this morning, he inferred that he was not willing to go above £7 million..

Out of my control sorry..

If you read my latests post i have changed how i word things..

I mentioned that he was a target..

Macca

Thanks
Ton {Ed001's Note - I have no idea, but if I had to guess I would say he was just suggesting Wickham went for more than we valued him.}

All

Before the end of the season DC stated on Liverpool TV that key requirements for any new player are:

*Fitness history
*their ability to withstand the physicality of the premiership
*be team players
*age

obviously the club undertake hours of research and investigation on deciding who their targets are - when those targets are available I am sure the club will buy quickly.

The problem is with the club's intentions being private and its fan base so eager to see landmark signings there is a conflict, at the moment, however, have faith and with the full transfer window opening tomorrow expect some quality well thought out signings.

In my opinion, we should focus on strengthening the left back, centre back, left and right wing, and get a third striker.

Remove as much deadwood as possible - get a lean and quality squad so that up-and-coming young players can simply come through.

Champions league next year, pushing for the title thereafter.

Suarez to take over captaincy from Gerrard in two years.

Alright eds any thought on city's purchase of nasri increasing our chances of signing Adam Johnson one of the few British players I do rate keep up the good work lads

Cheers

30 Jun 2011 19:59:54
ed or fans- do you think any more of the young players could be in the 25-man squad for next season if kk thinks they are good enough i think he will .this together with the young players brough in last season would give people maybe a better idea of what players we really need to sign lfc {Ed009's Note - players under 21 don't need to be included in the 25 man squad - they can play regardless.}

30 Jun 2011 19:58:06
What ever happened to Jamie Kanwar?

30 Jun 2011 19:52:45
Why are all fixtures on saturday?????? {Ed009's Note - we don't have the notable distraction of huge Europa League treks to Azerbaijan etc this season.}

30 Jun 2011 19:48:25
not a rumour but i hope KK and DC have got a couple of big signings up their sleeves because with Man Utd spending big and Man City starting to open the cheque book we'll be lucky to finish same position as last year and we can forget top four no disrespect but Henderson and possibly Adam and Downing aint gonna get Fergie and Co worried {Ed009's Note - but Kenny Dalglish will.}

I think I'm sicker than Ed001. I went to sky and looked at an article re: stadium for us. The images I saw made me sick. Hard to believe that was not too long ago. Onwards and Upwards, the Mighty reds. Have Faith.

Have you ever thought the club is trying to make out that they have to sell before we buy to keep the transfer targets prices down..

Also if we had to sell first how could they possibly of afforded Young and Jones..

Cheers

Macca

30 Jun 2011 19:18:26
If we cant sell the players without a swap deal then why dont we do swaps in every transfer deal just to drop the wage budget. the wage budget was the reason we didnt get wickham

Sunderland are doing OK with there Jordan Henderson money .

Kieran Westwood
Seb Larsson
Conor Wickham
Ji Dong
Craig Gardener

Interesting , some young talent there and 2 players to take the place of Henderson , apparently they are still keen to sign some MUFC players .

Could be an interesting to see Sunderland in the Premier League next season .

I've posted twice over the last 3 days that transfer fees were not the issue. But that the owners are very worried there gunna end up with an unsustainable wage bill.

Now talk sport are reporting we need to lose 13 squad players and £30m a year off the wage bill.

With Cole, Jova, Maxi, Aqualini and Poulsen costing the club over 1/2 million a week in wages I think there may be more to this story than my source told me about.

Any one think that Juan Mata is staying at valencia to see how Liverpools season pans out, and then make his decision on prefered club next season or possibly January.

30 Jun 2011 18:49:53
I for one am pleased we are not paying inflated prices for players who obviously dont want to play for us. Those mercenary types bleed the club dry. Promote the youngsters until we get the right players with the correct attitude and desire to play for the red shirt and wear it with tru passion and pride. The rebuilding of the squad may take longer than anticpated or may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as was the need to blood youngsters like Robbie and Macca. Kenny will always do what is best for LFC, some fans obviously don't remember the days of Peter Robinson and how things were only publicised when deals where complete. Patience and faith. The Grimsby Town official website is reporting that their friendly with Hull City has been cancelled as Hull are now playing Liverpool on the as part of an impending transfer deal between the clubs. My first thought was that Ayala might be going to Hull. However, usually the small club gets the friendly as a sweetener when the big club buys one of their players. Looks like we may be about to sign a Hull City player - no idea who though.

Bob

Or it could be set up for our young squad.

From the Guardian today

It's 10 years to the day since the former Liverpool manager Joe Fagan died aged 80. And while the brief but brilliant contribution of winning the League Cup, the league title and the European Cup in his first of only two seasons might be forgotten outside Merseyside, on the Kop it is cherished, affording him the hallowed status of the club's more famous fathers.

When Bob Paisley retired in 1983 the then Liverpool chairman, John Smith, had enough confidence in the burgeoning bootroom ethos to give Fagan the job. Despite having absorbed the managerial genius of Paisley, to whom he was assistant manager and Bill Shankly, whom he worked with as a coach in almost 30 years at the club, Fagan's only previous experience as a manager was long behind him at non-league Nelson in the 1950s.

That Fagan accepted the job is something for which Liverpool fans should be eternally grateful. The straightforward 59-year-old Scouser may have appeared to be the natural successor, but he was a reluctant one, saying of the Anfield job: "It's lonely up there." At only two years Paisley's junior, he was hardly a long-term option and admitted to feeling more at home enjoying the banter with players in training at Melwood than the rigours of succeeding a manager who had just won six league titles and three European Cups in only nine years, a record not even Sir Alex Ferguson has matched.

A 31-year-old Kenny Dalglish may have had the innate ability to cope with managing Liverpool but, in 1983, he was still busy terrorising defences with Ian Rush. Whether Smith ever considered the possibility of recruiting an outsider is not known, but that Fagan understood it was his duty to "wearily climb the steps", as Dalglish once said of Fagan's promotion, is. His remarkable success in his first season (1983-84) would do more than justify Smith's faith, it would also play a huge role in validating what has since become known as the Liverpool Way.

To his detractors Fagan was nothing more than a glorified co-pilot keeping an unstoppable machine pointed in the right direction. But that does the man a disservice. Liverpool's dressing-room was a strong one, with the experience of Graeme Souness, Phil Neal and Dalglish accompanied by some old-headed younger players such as Alan Hansen, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Fagan was not merely brought in as a cheerleader, he was appointed because he was respected by a group of players of whom many had been used to getting what they wanted on and off the field for the best part of a decade. To walk into such a situation and have the strength of character to make telling decisions was not easy. The league campaign was a fiercely contested one. Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and QPR ran Fagan's side close.

An embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Coventry City in the first half of the season could have sown the seeds of doubt in Fagan's mind that he was nothing more than a No2 and not up to the task, but by the turn of the year Liverpool were top by two points and heading towards a 15th league title. Using the much-maligned Michael Robinson as a third attacker was a shrewd move too, keeping the formation fresh and giving the young striker the experience he would need to deputise for Dalglish who missed nine weeks of the run-in with a shattered cheekbone caused by the elbow of Manchester United's Kevin Moran.

Fagan also dropped Dalglish in his two-year spell. Perhaps it is this painful memory that prompts the Scot more than any other Liverpool player or manager to recite the old adage that no player is bigger than the club, another vital component of the Liverpool Way. Liverpool's remarkable run in the European Cup, in which they did the rarest of things at the time and tore apart the Portuguese champions Benfica at the Stadium of Light, winning 4-1, culminated in a final against Roma at their home ground, the Stadio Olimpico .

A baying atmosphere made it feel like an away match for Liverpool, but they were 1-0 up after only 13 minutes when Phil Neal pounced on a fumbled cross by Franco Tancredi. Roberto Pruzzo's equaliser before half-time led to a cagey second-half and extra time, finally culminating in penalties. Despite 70,000 hostile Romans willing Liverpool to miss every kick, it was the 'home' side who suffered. Fagan's quiet word with Bruce Grobbelaar, instructing him to do what he could to put off Roma's penalty-takers, worked a treat. The eccentric goalkeeper's spaghetti legs routine gave Francesco Graziani the wobbles, forcing him to shank Roma's fourth penalty over the bar to secure Liverpool a fourth European Cup.

Fagan did not allow Liverpool's players to celebrate for long. "Here are the Championship medals. If you qualified for one, take one, " he told his squad after their short summer break. "The trophies we won last season, the European Cup, League Championship and League Cup are gone. In the past. We start again. We're European champions. We have to defend our title."

He quietly replaced Graeme Souness with Jan Molby, arguably the finest passer of a football to wear a red shirt (Xabi Alonso included). It was a signing that would benefit Dalglish as manager more than Fagan, but showed that he had a keen eye for a footballer and was more than just a coach.

Perhaps it was because Fagan, who never actually played for the club, was so steeped in the Liverpool Way that he resigned in May 1985. "Second is nowhere", was Shankly's motto. That's where Liverpool finished in the league (to Everton) following his treble-winning season. His decision was taken in the days leading up to the horrors of Heysel, in which 39 Juventus fans died after Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse during fighting before the match. Liverpool lost the final in Brussels 1-0. Not that it mattered after what had gone before.

While the red half of the city was paralysed by guilt, Fagan showed his strength of character, It was he who spoke for the football club at a memorial service at Liverpool's catholic cathedral when others could not. "We pray for their families and friends who have suffered through bereavement, " he said in his warm Liverpudlian lilt. "We pray that the sporting spirit, so treasured on Merseyside, may never be lost to violence or bitterness." Perhaps it is because Dalglish learned from Fagan that the responsibility of being a football manager sometimes goes beyond making football decisions that he was able to hold the club together so bravely in the aftermath of Hillsborough.

That Fagan's glorious cameo should end on such a sombre note is a crying shame. But his work at Liverpool was done. His success emboldened the board to once again recruit from within: a decision that is still benefiting the club to this day.

dear ed with nasri goin to man city and city still looking at the possibility of mata and hulk wat are the chances we could bring in both or 1 of adam johnson and james milner cheers ed

longlivethekenny {Ed009's Note - If City were to sign another winger or two then there would be an increased chance of Johnson if we made a good offer for a player who Mancini quite simply doesn't want. Contrastingly, Milner is not a winger, and will probably stay at City.}

30 Jun 2011 18:41:59
What ever happened to young Griezmann or perhaps Reus at Borr Moenchen. Both great young prospects and cheaper than Downing. I personally like Downing, and yes we need a crosser, but we also desp need a couple of players who can beat a man. I would personally have offered 20m for Marin. Bremen would have taken that.

Can anyone confirm this as a real quote from mata, found today on link from a twitter account.

There is a lot of media speculation in Spain regarding my future, but I have decided to remain", said Mata.

"I want to honour my contract until June 2015 and win trophies with my club.

"We can achieve great things next season because we recently signed players like Diego Alves, Adel Rami and Dani Parejo."

Rumour please. Ed I'm usually optimistic as a fan but I'm beginning to worry we won't have a very good transfer window. All the players we show interest in we seem to then stop trying. I understand if we really wanted Wickham we would've signed him but who else can we get in his place and now it seems Clichy is off to City. Whats going on ed? {Ed009's Note - there are quite simply too many fantastic players for us to worry about losing specific ones we would like. Dalglish's targets may be very different from those that are perceived to be his targets, and I am sure he will get those he really wants, within reason. We quite simply can't attract the top, top players this season, until we regain Champions League football. Personally I'd be relatively happy with just Downing and Adam as well as a left back. It'd provide us with an assist machine for Carroll, and an assist machine for the entire team in Adam. It's small steps back up to the top mate, but Liverpool FC wasn't built in a day.}

30 Jun 2011 18:21:37
What's the Craic ed? Great site assisted to it . All I wanna know is what the hell is going in??? We are just about loosing out and missing every single transfer target that we are going for and "supposedly" trying to sign All I can say is DC and KK better have a few big things up their sleeves and shock us all and everyone else. I'm trying my best to keep the faith but it's starting to whither away ............ {Ed009's Note - supposedly is the right word. Lazy journalism is the root of every supporter on here's angst. We all need to relax because the truth is that our supposed targets could be entirely different to who Kenny and Comolli actually want.}

Ed i saw an article on aguero to juventus saying they will sign him for closer to 30m and pay him just over 6m a year. Well we can afford. Also a lot of ITK's who are normally right are saying we are meeting with aguero's reps this week, do you think there could be any truth that we might be trying to sign him? Also guilium balague said we were interested {Ed009's Note - perhaps we could afford to sign Aguero if we went all out for him, but that simply isn't the point. The point is that we are not in need of another striker, not nearly as much as we are in need of wingers, and so any money should be spent on a world class player in that area.}

30 Jun 2011 17:51:37
Liverpool fans - Hold your nerve.

30 Jun 2011 17:51:04
I don't see us landing many, if not any of the targets people are mentioning day in day out tbh

As for the marquee signing?
I reckon its gonna be another Meireles type of signing
We won't see it coming and he'll have a cracking season

kyriagkos has signed an extension
poulsen and Koncesky are just poor no1 is going to pay for them

Lets hope KK can get them to play like they ended the season

what would be a fair wage to pay football players in the age of austerity.

Just wondering,
steven gerrade £120 000 x 52 = £6 240 000 a year
20 starts , 4 goals, 5 assists
Joe Cole £90 000 x 52 = £4 680 000 a year
9 starts, 2 goals, 1 assist

The sums of money being offered to the footballer seems to be far more than any normal person would need in a life time. Lets face it apart from kicking a ball, none of the above would of ever earned a wage near that amount in the real world. Most of them would of endded up in jail, life of crime or hard labour.

Footballers never complete education, if one of them has GSCE's he is seen as a professor by the others. In the 1980's footballers earned a average wage that was inline with normal people.

IF we apply this wage structure in average office. People would wonder why the office junior was getting £15,000 a week for doing very little. Why the Office lay about was on £90'000 a man who has no targets to drive him. Mr SickNote was sitting at home on £120'000 a week.

Average players have some how managed to suck as much out of the game, are the elite players.

The wage gearing ratios for english football clubs are higher than any other league in the world. English football seems to be playing hell of alot of money for a average product.

When Alan Sugar instructed sky to pay through the nose for football. He should of also introduced a wage structure to the game {Ed009's Note - thats a little harsh, no? Lampard passed all his GCSE's (or their equivalents) as far as I know, achieving several top grades.}

30 Jun 2011 17:37:37
ed any news on first team coach could we move for kevin mcdonald of villa?DORSET RED {Ed009's Note - I'm afraid I've heard nothing as of yet; I imagine it is not a priority until pre-season training starts, although I show you to macca's post where he suggests Rush could be a target.}

30 Jun 2011 17:30:22
so we have to pick 2 frrom the follwing:
gerrard, henderson, adam, aqualiani, spearing, shelvey, lucas {Ed009's Note - you can presume that Aqualani will be sold, and that Meireles may well join him.}

30 Jun 2011 18:00:00
I know they don't fit the bill of the new owners because of their age but i have said for a good few years now that we maybe should have bought for defoe and Wright Phillips

Then why not take the ideas floating around on the internet. put them on a list and hand them over to manager. lol

Not a rumour but important news for LFC fans:

Apparently Kelvin McKenzie, who published The Sun's lies about LFC fans after Hillsborough, and who has never openly apologised for his actions, has moved to the Daily Mail today.

Those terrible headlines were his doing, and it is him that all Liverpool supporters should remember as the real source of those lies that added to the devastation of the bereaved families.

There is good reason to publicise his move as widely as possible among Liverpool supporters, and to boycott the Daily Mail, if this evil poisonous lout is in charge of any significant part of it.

I would urge people to spread the word of McKenzie's move on all LFC websites, and consider what action to take. {Ed007's Note - It is not just LFC fans that hate that pond life, JFT96}

Kenny Dalglish knows what he's doing. He's been in the football buisness long enough to know the mind games and the tactical rumours. All interest in British Talet, such as. Adam, Downing, Clichy, Wickham and lately Lennon. Is all a cover keeping other teams on edge. Yes Adam maybe signed. But that is all, Expect young international prospects to be bought in. I expect that he has a few signings lined up already. For 14M i would be biting galatasaray's hand off for Turan. Expect Champions league football in 2012-2013. You'll never walk alone.

Liverpool's previous interests:

Phil Jones - Man Utd
Ashley Young - Man Utd
Connor Wickham - Sunderland
Gael Clichy - Man City?

No A**m yet, No Downing yet??

I really hope that Henderson isn't the only signing though, so much sh*t we need to get rid of

Man flu is bad, I feel sorry for u today ed. I didn't know whether I wad on the right page, I really thought I was on Liverpool moaners page ( should b a separate page ) for a min. I'm a Liverpool fan through an through an it pains me to read so much negativity about r great club. If they we're to put half as much effort into supporting this great club instead of moaning, they wud realise apart from man u, who has signed maybe the next tiabi, and 2 players who aren't goin to play week in week out, none of the other so called top 4 has signed anyone of any relevance yet, apart from u's. So get a grip people an support the team you r supposed to love an get of the Eds back he's got man flu {Ed007's Note - He is just a big wuss! I hope FSG put the money in (15m+) to buy a decent young winger that can get us (score + assist total) at least 20 goals next season plus a solid (8m+)left back with pace and a few years experience in a decent league, because that is ideally what we need most at this present moment in time. Buying for the future is all well and good but we need to give Kenny a chance to get in the top 4.

30 Jun 2011 17:13:57
Hey eds, just wondered what your opinion is on the claims that we didnt sign Wickham as we are only prepared to bring in players once the wage bill is reduced. Just wondered if you believe this to be the case as if it is I would find it very worrying. I think we will struggle to sell players as I feel some are quite mercenary and would rather collect their wages at anfield than play regularly elsewhere. The other problem is the time it will take to offload them if indeed we do manage it as it mayeave us with little time to do business or even finding our top targets have already been snapped up.

Cheers, JD. {Ed001's Note - no, it was simply that we have a valuation for players and we are not going to go above it because someone else will. A striker isn't the main priority, we are not desperately searching for one right now, so we can afford to wait for the right one at the right price.}

30 Jun 2011 16:55:56
KD dont afraid to go buy expensive wingers. BUT..why 1 of them is Downing? it is becoz KD believe he has quality that LFC need for nxt season.

Hope to hear C.a**m & Downing good news by tomorrow...

Unfortunately, Aquaman is not strong enough for the intensity and pace of the premiership - skilful player more suited for serie A - another Rafa decent buy.

It also gives some good rationale on why we might not have gone in for Wickham & Marveaux and why they want more data on a player other than how he performs on the pitch including detailed pyschological assessment. Interesting that Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley used a similar idea in that they had two files on each player, one about them on the pitch and one about them off it.

LB - Baines
CB - Cahill
LW - Mata
RW - Johnson
CF - Sturride

These would be my ideal signings, admittedly expensive ones but Ed what are the respective chances of each and how highly do you rate Sturridge? {Ed001's Note - I am not a fan of Baines, he is useless defensively, great going forward, but I would rather have Johnson or Robinson because they are both defensively superior. Not to mention there is very little chance of Everton selling him to us, they have no one to replace Baines. He is their main attacking threat these days, they can't afford to lose him. Cahill is just a hoofer, I don't see any reason to buy him unless we are bringing in Fat Sam or Tony 'Pump It Long' Pulis as manager. I would love Mata, I am not confident of signing him, but it is certainly not impossible. Not sure which Johnson you are talking about, Adam Johnson is a left winger that Mancini is too stubborn to play in his strongest position. As a left winger he is top class, he does have issues with his off pitch drinking and is not the best trainer though. Sturridge is not even a tenth as good as he thinks he is, not good enough and not prepared to listen to instruction to learn to be good enough.}

Please post on rumours site. Liverpool are closer to sign Clichy from Arsenal. Also where does Kelly play, Johnson RB and Clichy LB, Ed what do you think? {Ed001's Note - why would this go in rumours? Kelly can easily shift to centre back, which is his preferred position anyway.}

If we manage to sell enough CM players (Merieles, Aqua, Poulsen), we should bid $30m for Javi Martinez. I know they don't want to sell, but I doubt they'd turn that kinda money down. If we were somehow to get Mata, (fingers crossed) then I reckon he'd love ta join his Spanish U21 buddy. Maybe its a dream, but its a damn good one.

If you put Gerrard, Suarez, Reina, Johnson and a fit Agger in the Barca side. They would still be the best team in the world.
That's how good the Key players of our Team are.
So we don't as much as everyone keeps saying in my opinion.

{Ed001's Note - oh yes, you have this down to a tee, because we are still owned by Hicks and Gillett who are penniless. Oh no wait we aren't owned by them, so we must be in huge amounts of debt with an unsustainable interest payment required. Or you could just be talking nonsense? I wonder which it could be?}

------------------------------------------------
I didn't say the owners were penniless Ed, I was merely pointing out that they seem to want to buy a BMW at Skoda prices and are dressing it up by saying the player acquistion needs to have resale value, i.e. buy on the cheap. In my opinion Carroll and Suarez would not be at the club if it weren't for the Torres revenue as the owners would not have paid those prices. Henderson has been bought due to the imminent departure of Meireles and Aqualini, therefore essentially net spend zero. We are in desperate need of a centre half (the greek a 12 month extension How many goals conceded were down to him last season, Carraghers ready for the knackers yard and Aggers a puff pastry constantly injured). We're having to play a right back at left back and an out and out centre forward in Kuyt on the right wing. Furthermore if Carroll or Suarez are injured, next in the pecking order is none other than Mr Ngog. I'll take it all back if we sign a decent centre half, left back, Mata on the wing and a decent third string centre forward. However, I just can't see it. We can't shift the deadwood and the owners won't invest any of their own money. Personally, if Meireles and Aquaman bring in £25mill, £16 covers the Henderson deal and I'd rather they settle the remainder of the Poulsen, Ngog and Jovanovic contracts and let them go. If the wage bill is the stumbling block they'd have a clean slate. {Ed001's Note - so you think the club should spend millions getting rid of players? And you think that the signings of Carroll and Suarez were the only ones we intended to make in January? Torres messed up the January window for us, he left us desperately looking for a striker, so all our other business had to be put on hold. Just because we haven't gone and spunked a load of money on some big name foreigner doesn't mean we have no money. We just happen to have a manager who knows how to manage without requiring an open chequebook.}

Juan Mata is definitely staying at Valencia, unless all the news media are plaigerising each other (like they normally do) and the original story was bull.

30 Jun 2011 16:14:02
Liverpool are looking to move on a total of 14 players. The reasons; 1. They are surplus to requirements. 2. To reduce the wage bill. 3. To enable us to trim the squad and use the money to improve the 1st team. The wages below are only a guess but this is the task facing the club.

Keeper - Jones 30k pw = Experienced Keeper
Defence - Konchesky 40k pw, Aurelio 40k pw, Kyrgiakos 40k pw, Degen 50k pw, Insua 35k pw = Baines & Cahill

Midfield - Meireles 50k pw, J Cole 100k pw, Jovanovic 90k pw, Maxi 90k pw, Poulsen 50k pw, Aquilani 70k pw, El Zhar 35k pw = Henderson, Adam, Downing & Mata

Attack - Ngog 40k pw = Defoe

In summery
14 players out 8 in. Smaller, higher quality 1st team
Wage bill for surplus players 760k pw (that's a lot of money) just over 39.5m a year gone and put to better use

Ed's>>> Question about Lavezzi

I was looking at his stats and was a little worried about not only his current form ( 22 Apps/6 goals)in 2010/2011 but his injury plagued season. I'm not sure he is really what we should be looking for in a forward, I could be way off bat here but may I ask your thoughts on him please, im just wondering where and why there has been so much hype over him.
Thanks. {Ed001's Note - I have never seen anything in him myself, he just looks a decent player, but not top class by any means.}

Liverpool owner John Henry has ruled out signing short term fixes at Anfield and insists the club need to plan for the future.

Following the signing of Jordan Henderson, the likes of Wayne Bridge and Alexander Doni have also been linked with the club, but Henry says the club's policy is to involve signing younger players.

Henry wrote on Twitter: "Speculation on players shouldn't include those of a certain age. We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC this is from givemefootball.com so EDs who does rule out that we are linked to {Ed001's Note - Wayne Bridge for one.}

30 Jun 2011 15:19:08
what do you reckon ed on playing three at the back with two wing backs

e.g. dann

carragher agger

wing backs

johnson/kelly baines/bale

midfield gerrard

turan mata

forwards saurez carroll

we can all wish cant we but noy a bad side with aguero charlie adam henderson meireles lucas kuyt on the bench {Ed001's Note - I have to be honest I am not a fan of a back 3, if played well it can work, but it should only be a short term solution to a lack of genuine wide players in my opinion.}

30 Jun 2011 14:30:13
Ed what would you say the situation is with downing? How far apart are we from their valuation and do you think it is definate he will sign. I wonder whether if they stick to their supposed valuation of 19m then will will walk away like we did with wickam, i don't think we will pay over the odds for anyone. Just wondering your thoughts ed? {Ed001's Note - I wouldn't say it was definite, they need to get someone in first before they are going to let him go. Villa had a small squad thanks to O'Neill, Houllier didn't get the chance to add much to it, now they have lost Young. Players like N'Zogbia that they are targeting are not proving easy to acquire.}

30 Jun 2011 15:36:58
Why bother paying £19m for Downing when he hasnt been consistant for MBoro and Villa..... He's loosing his pace and there are better and cheaper options...Lennon you can get cheaper, Giovani Dos Santos hasnt been given the time in England and would be available for around 6-8m, Turan £12-15m...any of these are better than downing (poor man's Adam Johnson) {Ed001's Note - he was consistent enough to get Villa's player of the year award last season.}

30 Jun 2011 15:26:28
Ed's I have a feeling that the site is going to be going mad tomorrow if 27 signings don't happen on the first day of the international window. LFC412 {Ed001's Note - I have no doubt you are correct, I am dreading it!}

to quote the master from Kung-Fu

"Patience grasshopper"

KK knows what he is doing. He's been there done that. It will be all systems go from July 1. He will want to have his departing players out and his arrivals and and ready to train ASAP (by the middle of July) as they have to get used to each other and practice I believe what will be 4-3-3 or using wings in attack formation.

He knows expectation is high and that we have to finish top 4. Please give him some time.

30 Jun 2011 15:17:02
Really hot debate over Downing. Obviously Kenny rates him but I just can't see it. Downing at Boro was no more than ok. Has he really improved that much while at Villa. Never seen him consistently go past people throughout a game. Walcott and Lennon - why would they leave London? Hardly ever a successful venture...Joe Cole. We don't seem to have many available wingers in Britain but N'Zogbia has improved over the last 2 seasons and is well worth his valuation.

Stevie J {Ed001's Note - Beckham never, ever beat a man, but he still managed to do alright as a winger. The important thing is that Downing has a very accurate cross on him. Whereas the Zog is a typical glory seeker, he will run with the ball while Carroll is stood in the middle waiting for a cross. It reminds me of the old days when Peter Beagrie was on the wings for Everton, he would beat his man over and over while his team mates would get more and more frustrated waiting for a cross and not getting it. Football is a simple game, we just need to play to the strengths of our players, that doesn't mean hoofing it out from the back to Carroll, but getting it wide and whipping it into the box.}

I thought aquaman Aquilani was rubbish too but I watched him vs portsmouth and was proved wrong:

Every long-pass is pinpoint accurate, some awesome 1-2s and some pretty good dribbles. I know it's one match but his skill is there.

there's a lot of buzz around anfield at the moment of a possible move for gareth bale. apparently the rumour is that liverpool are looking to spend up to 35 million as well as including either one of joe cole or jovanovic for the welsh international. Harry Redknapp has expressed a lot of interest in Joe Cole during the past year, especially after missing out on him last summer. apparently tottenham are prepared to pay 5 mill for Cole, which could tempt them to part company with Bale.

-------------------------------------------------

Bale wont come to liverpool as he hates the city according his youtube post.

stop having a go at people who raise there concerns i am sick of liverpool fans having a go at people who give their opinion we are not a facists party or a communist party people have views my concern is we pay 16 mill for a player we must have about 9 of then it looks like we have to lower the wage bill to buy more if money is the concern downing 19 mill nzogbia 9 mill cmon and nzog is classed as home grown some people might say attitude well half the players in the league are bellxxxnds

30 Jun 2011 15:02:58
Ed,
Regarding the players that we would like to ship out - I don't like the term 'deadwood', sounds horrible - and I include Aqua in this - how much do you reckon they are costing the club in wages per week ?
A ball park figure - £400k ?
Then add that up to a monthly outgoing.
It's a good whack of money, and I can entirely understand JWH's statement about good financial housekeeping.
What you reckon ?
The Real KB {Ed001's Note - it has to be at least that much. They do need to be shifted, it is a big hit from the club's coffers each month.}

Conor is clearly a LFC fan and at 18 will have a few years first team experience at Sunderland. By the time he is 22 we will be top team in England again and if he has progressed as we hope he will have a few months left of his contract and we should get him for a reasonable price.

Hi Guys,
for those of you not yet in the know. Liverpool have announced a pre season friendly against Hull on 23rd July at Hulls KC stadium. Cant wait for ticket announcements.

30 Jun 2011 13:59:06
LFC need to offload deadwood by offering them in any future deal..
for example:

1)juan mata - bid 20 + jovanovic
2)nolan roux - straight swap with Ngog.
3)juan mata - bid 15m + meireles.
4)zapata - bid 7m + aquilani
5)lavezzi - bid 12m + aquilani

then everybody happy..
LFC got their targets and get rid their deadwoods..

agree Ed?

LFC.rockx {Ed001's Note - why would they want our deadwood?}

30 Jun 2011 13:48:03
If we were to keep Aquilani surely we wouldn't need Adam. Adam is a good player and definitely worth the money being quoted but Aquilani is a better player IMO. Sure we wouldn't get the money from his sale but we would keep the money from not signing Adam. Our midfield would be something of a force next season. Downing on the left, Gerrard and Lucas in the middle, Henderson on the right. Aquilani, Spearing and Raul (if he stays as back-up). All we would need is a couple of wingers and we would be sorted in that area.

Throw in a CB, a LB and a striker and we are in business for next season. In the seasons coming we could trim the excess and sign world class players to build a title winning team. Couple this with great youngsters coming through, great management and great ownership I think we'll be sorted for the next 20 years.

Even if we were to sign Adam and sell Aquilani we would be getting a player who would bring a different range of passing to the side. He could fill in the left wing role (once he is fit) and his set pieces would be like presents for Carroll. The same goes for Downing. If we only signed Downing for the left wing we would be getting someone who can take a man on and get the ball into the box. Downing for top assists and Carroll for top goalscorer next season (if fit).

We will be back in the CL next season and challenging for the league within 2 years. KK and DC I'm sure over the next 3 years will put us in a position where we can go on and develop for many years to come

If KD and DC sell meirieles and buy downing , adam and dann then the should be sacked. Even thinking about these players should sound alarm bells in john henrys head Turan, payet or hazard instead of downing. sissoko instead of adam and sakho instead of dann. Both sakho and hazard won the player and young player of the year in france and will not come cheap but at least there would be 3 quality signings. Clichy or cissosko for lb would mean 4 excellent signing all at good ages. Keeping meirieles, aquilani and joe cole would also be good as its a squad game. We would be strong in every department and maybe add a striker to the mix if the budget allows it. Total spend would be around 50m but would keep us in good step for the next few years. Selling guys like jovanovic, poulson and konchesky would free up some wages.

JMCN {Ed001's Note - so you don't want to buy Downing, Adam and Dann, but you think it is good to keep Cole? What are you thinking?}

30 Jun 2011 13:37:36
Hi eds,

although the double-swoop for Gardener and Dann didnt go through, Craig Gardener is expected to complete a 6m move to Sunderland and is having a medical today.

I can only hope that it means someone else showed a better offer for Scott Dann - imagine an all-scouse back four of Robbo/flanno, Dann, Carra and Kelly

30 Jun 2011 13:28:54
{Ed001's Note - not at all, why earth {Ed001's Note - not at all, why would anyone be bothered? I don't understand all the whinging going on about missing out, clubs always miss out on targets, every single transfer window. Why is it suddenly a reason to get all hysterical about t?}
-------
I think prob because thus far the only target we've actually signed is one where noone else bid for him. Its not all doom and gloom as people think but I can understand peoples frustrations as whenever someone else bids against us they win. Even crap teams like newcastle and sunderland.

Chin up though guys there's plenty more players in the world that noone is interested in to sign.

Mr E

30 Jun 2011 13:15:32
Whats all this
"we trust in Kenny, but" nonsense from most of you.

You cant have it both ways, if you want to slag KK off do it, if you want to support him do that, but you cant do both.
Some people just cant be satisfied.

You want him to sign players sensibly yet go off on one when a rumoured potential signing , who may or may not be the next superstar is signed by someone else in the belief that we have missed the boat (again).

Wait until the transfer period is over, then comment on those we got and if the players then perform poorly by all means have a go. Remember where we were 12 months ago and be grateful we are not there now.

Optimistic Meg

30 Jun 2011 13:07:13
By the sounds of things we won't be signing players until we get rid of the dead wood to trim down our wages bill

I still really want to see Downing & Adam in The Red Shirt

is *clichy -man city* deal done?

i wonder y clichy would opt for city....if he will get regular 1st team football here .....

ohh yaa city have champions league but still..city squad should be given status of a city itself considering its size..n so many of unused un touched players .they have just kept on buying ......i dont see clichy getting regular start there

what u think ed? {Ed001's Note - or perhaps he wants too much money for a defender that is incapable of defending?}

30 Jun 2011 12:56:57
Is it me, or does anyone else feel that our return to the top 4 can be summed up with 1 glaring need: PACE We have loads of talent, but we are lacking that explosive winger that can make things happen by using their blistering speed.... I truly feel that if we had someone such as Mata, Walcott or even Lennon we could really challenge for the league title... Right now we're too easy to defend because Suarez is the only speedy threat we have... Your thoughts eds?
Oh, and mark my word... Glen Johnson will be playing more at right wing with Kelly playing RB... That is if we sign a marquee LB....
YNWA USA {Ed001's Note - you mean pace such as Johnson, Kelly, Robinson, Sterling, Suarez, Gerrard etc? Pace on its own is meaningless, that is why Walcott and Lennon are both so decidedly average.}

30 Jun 2011 12:46:21
I just have to say to the posts which suggest that 'we have to spend money quickly and get the best players even if it costs 60million' - What a crazy idea. Unlike Chelsea or City, Liverpool are are not prepared (nor should they have to) pay through the nose for the top players, while placing a financial burden on the club.
Players like Wickham and Clichy, who we have now missed out on, may have passed us by, however it doesn't mean we don't have similar targets on the radar.

From what ive seen on the site and in the media, in my honest opinion, it doesn't look like Mata will be a liverpool player (however brilliant this would be). This doesn't there aren't alternatives with similar skill available.

It seems that as soon as a half decent name is mentioned on this site, people take it and run. When the international transfer window opens, we'll see some business

hey ed, i just want to tell everyone to calm down. at the end of the day we have two top forwards instead of one and we now have a young english mid who all the top clubs were linked with not so long ago. im not sure if we have much money or not but we are already stronger than we were this time last year. im delighted that the king is back and we should all now get behind him and the team no matter who we get or do not get. i want people to stop talkintg about how musch other teams have spent, it makes no difference to us. we are liverpool and we are on the way up.dublin red

I would give Aquilani one season to prove himself and if he can't then show him the door.

We re not going to see a flurry of transfer activity until nearer the end of the transfer window. The only players moving now are either unwanted by their respective clubs or have been bought for sizeable fees (Henderson, Jones, De Gea, Wickham).
There are 2 months of transfer activity left. Teams such as Blackpool are going to be in no rush to sell their best players for low prices when there is ample time to sell for more. This is why Adam (10m) and Downing (19m) wont come cheap just yet especially if there is any interest from other clubs. Expect more signings at the end of the window when the selling clubs have less options. At the moment, it is still a seller's market.

FSG and KK are obviously very open to spending (£20m for Henderson £35m for Carroll) but what I love is that they are being very thoughtful about who they buy. We don't want to go through another Babel, Riera, Aurelio situation. I would love to see Downing at LFC, mainly to give Kuyt some competition for first team football, and I think we will.

According to Koptalk (via The Mirror), we missed out on Wickham because the owners would not sanction any further additions to the wage bill until the high earning deadwood is moved on.

So don't expect any further deals to be completed until Cole, Jovanovic, etc are off the wage bill. Escpecially potentially high earners like Turan, Mata, etc.

Since LFC can't give these players away because their wages are too high, worrying times ahead if this is true

Taken From An Interview With king Kenny ...

Dalglish, alongside director of football Damien Comolli, have set two golden rules since Dalglish returned in January and they are that firstly Liverpool's squad does not need a massive overhaul and secondly that any business will be done at their pace and at their convenience.

Other clubs would have baulked at Blackpool's delaying tactics over Adam and offered an open chequebook just to get the deal completed or would have entered a financial battle with Sunderland for Wickham's signature but Liverpool are refusing to do that.

Some may say they paid over the odds for Henderson and although he is a gamble at least he has Premier League experience unlike teenager Wickham.

As far as Dalglish and Comolli are concerned it is a case of taking things steady, conducting business calmly and making sure the players who do come in help to aide and assist those already at Anfield.

If that takes until the clock is ticking down on the transfer window then so be it.

That may make for uncomfortable reading for Liverpool fans desperate for marquee signings but Dalglish and Comolli should be trusted - and respected - for not being strong-armed into conducting any frantic transfer action.

And if Liverpool's fans want prove of that patience they only have to remind themselves of Dalglish's words back in May before the transfer window even appeared on the horizon.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "The squad only needs tinkering.

"If people want to see the best players and assets of the football club wearing a red shirt, that's what we want to try and provide.

"We want to get the highest quality of player in that we can. That's what position we have been put into, and that's what we will try to do.

"Whether it is massively or cheaply, it doesn't make any difference as long as you spend well.

"Budgets are all very well and good but it doesn't guarantee you anything.

"Like every other club there will be movement in and out and I am sure there will be plenty of speculation - some we might even recognise the names of.

"We will be doing business but the better we do the business the more successful we will be."

Why can't we moan? Why do people have a go at a fan for daring to have an opinion? We pay our money and so we're entitled to have our say.

I think I've got the crux of the issues with our moaners. So why can't they moan? The reason many of us on these forums cannot stand the moaning is because it's not an opinion you are stating. You're not having your say; you are having a moan, a whinge because this is today's society and this is the culture that our brilliant Government's have created over the years. We'll make it easy for you system.

It's far too easy to moan and complain. You have little regard for the full picture, in fact you do not even weigh up the pro's and con's of your whinge because that's too difficult to do. You're disrespectful and idle, akin to opening your mouth like some whale taking in 300,000 tonnes of plankton. You never qualify your statements. That's too damn difficult. You rarely sign your posts. You pay little attention to the facts. You generalise rather than talking about one particular topic. You use the lowest form of intelligence: abuse and you absolutely refuse to engage the brain before the fingers.

Example and I quote "fed up waiting and even if we do sign anyone it like 2 more slow coaches adam and downing are liverpool allergic to pace sign nzogbia now 9 mill absolute bargain to the drool we are looking at Man Utd keep signing pace and keep winning leagues we keep signing sloooooooooow players in kk we trust but didnt celtic and newcastle say that hendo an average player we didnt even need or wait for it are we gonna play him on the wing square pegs round holes the story of lfc over the last 15 years that and no pace in wide positions"

Impatient to the point of ridiculousness. Disrespectful to players. Bizarre ranting on why we should sign a player. You mention 'kk' referring to 'King Kenny' but then mock him with the unsuccessful spells at Celtic and Newcastle, so you clearly do not trust him. And there we have it, the judgment of a player. Average is the description. Why is he average? We don't need him? And do you know how quickly Henderson covers 100M by any chance? I think you may need to have a look at some detailed reports on him. Square pegs, round holes for the last 15 years? Would you like to qualify this?

This isn't an opinion. This is the wailing of someone who has simply no idea about football. None of us claim to be an oracle but the majority of us study football, some deeper than others and can actually give a worthwhile explanation. This is an opinion backed up with relevant points. It may not be considered right or wrong, but creates what most fans on here want. A worthwhile discussion.

In fact an opinion expressed in such detail can be positive or negative and it would not be mocked as such. I'll go on record as saying that Bjorn Kvarme was the worst defender I have ever had the misfortune of watching at Liverpool and I'll give A, B and C reasons why I think that. It's an opinion. I would like to read what others state and it wouldn't bother me one iota if anyone disagreed with me and said why. In fact there are many who want this type of interaction.

You Tom Hicks and George Gillett are very lucky that the Ed's just haven't the time to sift through the posts without really seeing what they contain, otherwise if that happened you'd be reading about 15 posts per day.

I feel as if I'm fighting a losing campaign but stick together lads and lasses and we'll rid this site of Tom and George once and for all.

Bob the Red, join the campaign

why is it that we where willing to pay double what jordon henderson is actually worth, yet we wouldnt increase our offer of a pathetic 5million for gael clichy?...the clichy deal should have been sorted weeks ago, and YET AGAIN we piss about and now there is a possibility that city have swooped in ahead of us typical liverpool f.c behaviour this rick parry rightly got slaughtered for this type of pathetic behaviour...not convinced by comolli or dalglish for that matter whatsoever as of yet....every1 respects wot kenny done a a player, but 2 have blind loyality 2 him because of this is ridiculous and naive

30 Jun 2011 12:08:06
First Jones, then Wickham and now Clichy. Dont get me wrong, I will stand by King Kenny 100% but i am getting a little frustated that we have been beaten to three players that we know we had an interest in. The only explanation i can have is that we must have some other targets in mind as i cant believe that we would have let these players go elsewhere without having a decent plan b. ED, i know most of you have been saying there is no need to rush etc, but even you must be a little miffed as to what is happening? We supposedly had Jones were we wanted him, We all know that Wickham wanted to join us but we wouldnt up our offer and Clichy by all accounts wanted us but looks like City have stolen a march. I might be talking sense, but i could also be one of the most impatient people on this earth {Ed001's Note - not at all, why would anyone be bothered? I don't understand all the whinging going on about missing out, clubs always miss out on targets, every single transfer window. Why is it suddenly a reason to get all hysterical about it?}

30 Jun 2011 12:08:01
i strongly believe we should just pay out the extra five million or so for mata. this is because he is far better 4 years younger and has a lot more accolades than downing. mata has one the u19 and u21 euros with spain also the world cup, the copa del ray. On the other hand downing has only won a measily league cup. Also i believe we should buy another centre back either zapater or gary cahill because agger is constantly injured

I've glad i've read a few positives posts about Andy Carroll. But for a minority who belive we've missed out on better player or will turn out a better player then Andy in Wickham, that remains to be seen but i doubt it very much. I think some people forget Big Andy that at not long turning 22 he's still learning the game himself. He already showed how dominant a player is when we played against Newcastle away. He never just dominated our 2 centre halves who he tore them both new clackers. But to the match itself. He was head and shoulders above anyone on that pitch that day(no pun int) scored 1 and set Nolan up with a towering header leaping over Skirtl. He scored against Chelsea, out jumped Arsenals keeper for a goal. Now this was when he was fully fit I think the only time he's been close to full fitness since he joined us was against City, the best defence in the league and he tore them apart not just with his goals but with his all round play like the delicate through ball to Suarez that ended up hitting the post. I really belive that if he can get fully fit, get his house in order. We will have the most dominant centre forward the Prem has seen since Drogba in his prime, maybe even better.And the most lethal strikeforce with Suarez in the Prem bar none. I do know that what signing's we make from now till the end of the season i cant wait for Gerrard Suarez and Carroll linking up. That alone is what i'm looking forward to more then any signing. Because make no mistake, after being written off by his so called fans, a minortiv i know.Gerrard is gonna be hungry he's gonna be f***in lethal. Get your coin any of the above 3 to be player of year. Jonson6

30 Jun 2011 12:00:42
Adam is a better striker than Mata, having scored 13 league goals in a poor team, compared to Mata's 9.

He's cheaper and British, so it's a no-brainer really. Having said that, Nolan Roux is still a good alternative

Sorry for copying & pasting, but here is a few Q&A from fans and John W. Henry. It just brings a perspective of what the summer will bring.

JWH: Speculation on players shouldn't include those of a certain age. We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC
Fan: does this mean that we're only thinking long term though and should brace ourselves for a wait for success? YNWA
JWH: I don't think so, Luke. We were very competitive in the second half of last year.

Fan: are we making progress on the new stadium plans?
JWH: Simon, an incredible amount of work has been underway on this issue. It would be helpful for fans to get an official update.

Fan: Sir what is going on? Things are not going according to plan. you promised early signing. noting happen. Man U 3 player now
JWH: Abuh, some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important.

Fan: do you think the press are overhyping us missing out on targets to try and make fans feel unsure about your ownership YNWA
JWH: David, who has a tougher job than a football journalist in trying to decipher what is going on in this sport with poss transfers

Fan: Isn't balance the key John to a team's success? Youth & Experience? ... Are we ruling out buying players over a certain age?
JWH: We already have quite a bit of experience in the club. Should be a good balance.

Fan: We're in the market for young & hungry talent that WANT to win & play for the shirt
JWH: That's a big part of it, Michael.

Brad Jones is a good player ok, anyone who doubts his ability has only heard of the man when he signed for liverpool, and under different circumstances we would have seen a very good keeper for Liverpool. This brings me to my next point, i have to say your original post was disgusting. Support for this great club doesn't only involve matters on the pitch, a real supporter would show their full support for somebody going through such a heartbreaking time in his and his familys lives. A decent human being would at least consider what effect this would have on somebodys life, let alone his football.
Sometimes there are more important things than football, even to the professional.

Of course we'll have to see what happens when the July 1 international window opems, but it's looking like our deadwood will be harder to flog than first thought.

Downing, mata best options out wide. Upset the Lennon deal was never followed up we could do with some pace and supply for carroll. Do we need Aquilani? or even adam for that matter? i think clichy would be a great signing we certainly need a left back. and Zapata or Cahill to fill caraghers boots. Zapata probably best option as both Skrtel and Agger would get the nod ahead of him but he is a solid sub - much better than Kyriakgos if thats how you spell it

30 Jun 2011 11:45:11
"I returne to liverpool with great enthusiasm".

"This is not a problem. It's not true that I didn't want to return to England."

Alberto Aquilani told Sky Italia.

some people say some liverpool fans are obsessed with Man Utd well they keep winning things thats why my point is shouldnt we take notice of some of the things they do ie like buy some good wingers with pace dont buy central mids when we dont need them and dont play players out of position which we have done for 15 years if you buy a player and play him out of position and i dont mean for a game or 2 i mean like kuyt right mid maxi left mid cisse rm biscan rm and so on if you do that why didnt you buy the right player in the first place we seem to look at a player think hes good buy him and then got nowhere to play them its the same with the kids where is shelvey been playing rm kelly is a cb not a lb thats why hes getting injured 6 foot 3 trying to turn buy what we need

30 Jun 2011 11:26:55
Can people stop linking us with Everton players? I've seen multiple posts saying we should buy Baines and I have just seen a post from a few hours ago where Jack Rodwell was supposedly a realistic target Everton would never sell to us unless we bid a ridiculous fee so please stop dreaming.

Also, we never missed out on our 'target' Wickham. If KK was seriously interested in him he would have put a bid in for him. Its all speculation.

Personally, I dont believe that we should be buying Downing. Aston Villa want £20m for him and hes almost 27. Not good business if you ask me. I understand that neither player is proven in the Prem but I would much rather we at least tried to get Mata and Turan. We could try and temp Galatasary with £15m bid for Turan and possibly a £23m bid for Mata could be enough.

We do not have a bottomless pit I get that but if the wing is out problem areas we should be prioritising that rather than Adam for the time being.

I also think that it would be a good idea to step up our interest in Clichy. I know some of the Eds dont like him but he is proven in the Prem and 100x better than Bridge and we could get him for about £7.5m if you believe what you read in the papers.

I thoroughly believe that those 3 players along would make a major difference to us next season. We would have a greater strength in depth and a stronger looking starting 11.

I trust Kenny and I really hope he can pull off some good signings this summer. Who knows? He may sign somebody completely unexpected and they could be brilliant, only time will tell.
I am only young and so have never seen him play or manage before but Kenny has gained my respect after the way he turned us around last season and I can only see us improving under him.

Sorry for the long post but Eds if you have any thoughts please respond to this post.

Look guys, this was an UNREALISTIC WISHLIST from 10 August 2010...

'10 Aug 2010 23:08:21
OUTS :
Riera 4m (DONE)
Benayoun 5.5m (DONE)
Insua 5m
Mascherano 25m
+15m from board

TOTAL: £49m

INS:
Wilson 5m (DONE)
Jovanovic FREE (DONE)
Cole FREE (DONE)
Poulson 6m
Salcido 3m
Turan 15m
Wright Phillips 6m
Ruiz 12m

TOTAL: £47m'

This is how bad the state of our club was back then. People WANTED SWP and poulsen, enough said. We couldn't even sign ruiz ffs, now look at our club. we spent approx £15M on 1 player this month and last year we spent around £15M altogether, and the international window hasn't even started yet So all of you ungrateful supporters have some patience and by the 10 of August 2011 we'll have spent maybe triple of what we spent last year, as well as getting rid of poulsen, jova and other players not good enough for lfc.

Patience is a virtue, so wait and you will be rewarded for your patience

Aquilani has no problems in returning to lfc. He told Sky Italia: "I return to Liverpool with great enthusiasm, this is not a problem.

"It's not true that I didn't want to return to England." Aquilani moved to Anfield in a deal worth an estimated £20 million from Roma but failed to cement his place in the first team during his first season.

He enjoyed a relatively successful campaign at Juventus last term but the Turin club reportedly refused to pay Liverpool's asking price.

The Italian's agent had previously hinted that a stay in his home country was a viable option, with Napoli mentioned as possible suitors.

"Aquilani to Napoli? I don't think it would be an easy negotiation but if the will is there why not?" his agent, Franco Zavaglia, told Italian Radio Crr.

"I have not spoken to [Napoli sporting director Riccardo] Bigon but the player wants to remain in Italy.

"If something was to come up he would be happy. I have not spoken to Alberto but Napoli is an important club.

"If Napoli considered Aquilani to be an important player, he would be open to negotiations."

Sorry for the copy & paste eds, but does this mean he'll stay?

Lets stop panicking people...just because the 'targets' the media have said we are in for are going to other clubs that surely proves that the media haven't got a scooby doo what is going on behind the scenes. Lets just wait and see what happens....and don't be surprised if we sign a few players that the ed's have rated 1/10 in chance of signing i'm sure the day before we signed Andy Caroll the ed's would have given him 0/10. I know this was largely due to the sale of FT but still shows anything is possible right up to the last minute. I for one am extremely excited about arriving at Anfield against Sunderland and seeing what the '11/12 season brings. Lets enjoy the summer, speculation & having the King in charge.

People are beginning to think that the under25/26 transfer policy is solely for resale value, but in the scheme of things that would make for a very measly profit, what FSG are trying to do is build a team that will for the better part stay together for at least the next 5-10 years, the real profit in a club is when they are winning trophies, and building a solid foundation over the next few years is the only way to do that, not to buy for 35m, pay wages and then sell for 40m because by my calculations that is a 5m gain minus wages, so they'd actually lose out on that, there is no money in buying and selling players, the players have to make money remember, the money is in trophies and building a better team.

30 Jun 2011 11:13:39
Henderson or Wickham? Who got the better deal, Sunderland or Liverpool?

We have paid shall we agree on £16M and Sunderland have paid £8M for Wickham. Both English, very young and talented players.

Sunderland have sold a player who played 37 games in the EPL last season, made his Senior England debut and in November last season was rated the best up and coming midfielder since Steven Gerrard. Steve Bruce actually commented that Henderson is as good as, if not better than Scholes was at the same age. And whilst fatigue hampered his run in to the end of the season, arguably after playing 37 games this would only aid his progression.

Sunderland have bought a player that has never played in the EPL. Someone who was rumoured to be that good that United, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Liverpool were all fighting each other to get first dibs on him. Where does he end up in the midst of the current climate for fancying young, home bred talent? Arr yes Sunderland and today stories already coming out of tractor land that Sunderland over paid and they bit their hand off.

Wickham has played the majority of two seasons now with Ipswich in the championship. Enough time for every scout, coach and manager to have a good, long, hard look at him in a difficult league. The answer to what they discovered is clear to see.

Whilst he maybe talented, he isn't the bees knees that the media were hyping him up to be. Or at the very best he clearly had a valuation way below the £8M with add on's that his talent didn't justify in overstretching.

The fact that Liverpool did so with Henderson is further prove that we have bought a gem in the making. And further proof, if any was needed, that our policy is not to flash stupid amounts of cash on anyone and everyone but only on players we deem it necessary to do so.

In plain old english. If we identify someone and they meet what we want, then regardless of price we will get them. Therefore if we were interested in Wickham and we must have been at some stage, we obviously took the view he wasn't top notch material and we were not prepared to land him come what may and if any player hits this criteria then i don't think we'll bother.

I think we've all had enough of Moores, H&G's bargain basement directives don't you?

Wickham not signing should be seen that we are being selective and careful in our project. And in hindsight, if we wanted him, he'd have been bought in early June.

Hi ed
i am getting anoid with are transferes i know we have till 31st of aug

but we signed henderson who i think at 16-20 mill is too much but we will give him a chance. but the problem is we have been linked with so many players and have gone after a few. they have either rejected us or we have been too slow to get off the mark to get them. i am not saying we should pay silly money but when you spend 16-20 million on henderson we only have our selfs to blame as other clubs will be thinking that we will pay silly money

i also know we need to get rid of players and i am sure we will but there wages is a problem. we also need to stop paying silly wages.

so come on lfc sign some players

Fresh Start to build.

please post this in rumours. I am eager to hear your thoughts and that of others if you wish to respond with your numbers.

Ed, Fellow Reds, Out of 10 what do you think our chances of getting rid of (IE. finding buyers):
El Zhar, Ngog, Maxi, Kyriakos, Agger, Merieles, Aurellio, Insua, Aqualani, Jovanovic, Cole.

I understand Agger, Merelies, Maxi, and Aurellio are good players but due to injuries, contracts etc. they may well be heading for the door.

Would also appreciate any info of interested parties in these players?

Ok lads some of the posts on here are actually insane. One thing is to express anxiety over who we buy, or to disagree with such and such as a potential signing
...but to start slamming the owners , Damien Comolli and Kenny Dalglish and saying "same old story" etc... is crazy r JUST PLAIN STUPID. I also feel that there may be difficulties, frustrations in your own personal lives if you feel the need to lash out at the owners and manegment. You might not be happy even if we got Lionel Messi on a free. It could also be explained by mass amnesia, as quite a few of you have mighty short memories to be B####ing now when a matter of months ago the club was in a horrible state. I realise that this is an open forum for opinions and thats what makes it a great site.....but i feel strongly that those if us who realise that the club is in a healthier state than it possibly has been since Kenny left have to stamp out this mindless negativity, and support out team, isnt that what 'SUPPORTERS' do? Come on moaners, join the happy Liverpool revolutionIts not blind faith/optimism...our eyes are wide open. YNWA

I completely trust KK, DC and JWH to do the right thing. There is no need for a complete overhaul (as we saw from the end of last season) and the transfer window is still open for a month

Seems like the Adam & Downing deal has gone through and I for one would love to see Clichy at Anfield.

I really think people need a reality check. 6 months ago our club was in a shocking state 2 cowboys a manager not good enough and alot of very poor average players. This is the begining of an new era. we have Kenny and owners that want the club to be a success for many years to come not a quick fix.ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY FOLKS. (irishred)

30 Jun 2011 10:22:54
fed up waiting and even if we do sign anyone it like 2 more slow coaches adam and downing are liverpool allergic to pace sign nzogbia now 9 mill absolute bargain to the drool we are looking at Man Utd keep signing pace and keep winning leagues we keep signing sloooooooooow players in kk we trust but didnt celtic and newcastle say that hendo an average player we didnt even need or wait for it are we gonna play him on the wing square pegs round holes the story of lfc over the last 15 years that and no pace in wide positions

I'm generally puzzled and just slightly worried, though i'm not sure why. Henrys statement could be interpreted both in + and - way. I'm not sure which, if its genuine then it should be applauded. On the other hand it may excuses, slight of hand or any form of deception. It would appear we have missed out on certain players, but then again some were never really likely, or were just not good enough. What do any of the Eds think? Thanks in lieu of an answer, and thanks for the hard work.

Muzmacol YNWA {Ed002's Note - I think, generally, the fans try and disect every statement attibuted to a club official or player. If folks knew this was going to happen then they would have to plan everything the say to the nth degree, or simply say nothing. If it appears in an interview or on Twitter, just take it with a pinch of proverbial salt. It won't be a secret message.}

YNWA

Hi everybody.

I stated Aquilani will return a month or so ago, just wanted to confirm and inform you all he will arrive back at melwood in the next two weeks to begin our warm up to pre-season.

30 Jun 2011 10:11:44
I think macca was right about us only targetting brit based players but I think the reason for this is because we aren't going to have the time to negotiate for foreign ones. The international window will open soon and we still haven't wrapped our targets in england after a month of negotiating for 2 players who are both low profile. It would prob take us till december to finish negotiations for a high profile target.

I know its the clubs that are holding up both deals but if we were willing to spend 35m on a striker with half a season prem experience, injury problems and disciplinary issues then why not pay the extra 2m or so that blackpool are looking for to wrap up the transfer of adam?

I'm not all doom and gloom, just trying to make people be realistic, we will spend the window signing adam and downing and possibly a left back and that's it till dec.

Mr E

I feel sorry for the editors on these Liverpool pages, why do you all have to ask for a rating out of ten about signing players? Does it make you feel all warm inside if the editor says there is more than a 6/7 out of ten chance??

Complete joke, everybody is laughing at you as always.

Liverpool seriously need to re-assess there sales and transfer policy, and fast, theres atleast five players that need to be got rid of, stop sitting on your hands and sort this out, Downing and Adam, hardly sets the world on fire does it, Henderson whoopy do, un-tested at top flight football, the week before the players come back, no assisstant manager, its nothing short of chaos.
-----------------------------------------------

You're a cheerly fellow 1st of all Steve Clarke is assistant. 2nd you need a buyer before you can sell anyone, or would you like to buy them? 3rd the transfer window is open until the 31st August and I believe we are not quite in July yet. With my reckoning, and maths isn't my strong point, that's 62 days still to go. And lastly, why are you having a go at someone who set up more goals for Sunderland than anyone else, someone who has not yet played in the beloved red shirt and I do believe Sunderland are in the Premier league, or is that not top flight football? I mean, if you were any good why aren't you there?

Hi all, What is really frustrating me is that I keep reading the excuse from other posters and the Ed's that the reason we are not signing the likes of; Turan, Mata, Defour etc etc is becuase the European transfer window is not open. Well if you look down the East Lanc's road you will see De Gea being presented to the media Do the rules not count at OT again or are LFC (Damien Comolli) just not direct enough. I fear DC is too intent on trying to save a few quid on the deal/wages rather than getting the right player for LFC. If the likes of Mata and Turan are identified, publicly state they have a liking for the club do the deal for gods sake

We need to stop believing paper rumours we have "missed out" "again" on our "targets". Do we really believe that LFC would not offer an amount of money they thought was necessary to secure players that thet "really wanted". What about Henderson Suarez and Carrol n amounts paid for them .we have been linked with too many players we could field four or five teams. Stay cool people Dalglish aint daft and below that unpenetratable face is the biggest grin just waiting to bust out when we gety rolling. Remember the sad old passionless days first part last season when RH was mismanaging the teams and the long and clueless faces of the players before kenny came along. Well look at the faces all round now And have a look and see how many liverpool "youngsters" are currently listed as english internationals now All things have improved throughout the club and the fans should be fully behind the club as well so read bwtween the lines with the paper rumours people.jim22

The moaners are out in force already. Poor old Mr Henry is becoming a hate figure already. Come on for crying out loud the international transfer window is not even open. Conor Wicham and Mavereux 'Sick note' are they really good enough for Liverpool? Are they going to bring the title back? Have patience and the big signings will come. If Gerrard and Reina thinks we are going to challenge then that is good enough fo me. Steve068

I don't know about you guys but i personally think downing is waaaay overrated. He obviously doesn't cost 20 mil, he's not even worth 10 if you ask me + he's 27. I don't know why KK and DC are so obsessed with him, i think they're making a mistake...

what is going on???

i get the feeling lfc will buy big and chelski the mancs spuds all are waiting for each other to make their move's like chess with wadds of cash if someone moves to barca (where everyone wants to play ball lets face it)then a domino effect begins the correct moves for players means a better chance for CL football we need a couple of defenders and another forward (id love to see a player john barnes esk to place the ball on carrolls nut)Y.N.W.A

Why are Liverpool so slow with the deals for downing and Adam? We already lost wickham deal yes to Sunderland, even the quicker than Liverpool. If we dont hurry up we will loose out on other targets.

30 Jun 2011 08:24:41
From the Daily Mirror..."Liverpool's bid for Connor Wickham was scuppered by the failure to cut their own wage bill. "
This looks like any big signings are out of the question, FSG are now showing there hand I think as they are not willing to buy anyone older than 25, a player with experience and coming to there prime.
I think KD has to work miracles this season with what he has got.
But if we sell then things might change, but missing out on Marveaux and Wickham is worrying because of wages, probably both wages combined is less than Coles.

30 Jun 2011 08:11:18
On a scale of 10, forget the lot. Its as clear as the days long, there won't be a great deal of activity, the Americans don't want to spend significant amounts and until the deadwoods been shifted so don't expect to see much activity. The only reason £16 mill was stumped for Henderson is because the outlays covered with the imminent departure of Meireles and Aqualani. So in a nutshell the Americans haven't spent a penny but in fact if both Meireles and Aqualani depart, they'll be in profit. Spurs and Arsenal are now in for Mata, PSG/Arsenal for Hazard, Stoke in for Dann, Utd in for Celtic left back, Enrique all gone quiet, City in for Baines, City Lavezzi, Youngs gone, Jones gone, Wickham gone, Downing unlikely, Adam maybe from the loose change from Aqualani sale. Its a joke. Henry's dressed it up this morning by saying the transfer policies based upon the 'LONG' term success at the club as opposed to filling short term gaps and not to speculate on the transfer of players at a certain age. Well correct me if I'm wrong Mr Henry but all the young talent out there's being taken by other clubs while we're left in the shadows dithering, 50%-60% of Liverpools targets are now either gone or being warmed up by other clubs. Same old story and all these posters harping on about 'have some faith, KK knows what he's doing', you need to have a word. KK will get the best out of the bunch he's inhereted but there should be a degree of concern as to how we're going about business in the transfer market. Utd identified the areas they needed to strengthen and have gone out and done it. If they hadn't they may have been in a bit of trouble next season. Spurs have a settled and strength in depth squad, they just need a decent striker and they'll be pushing for top 3. Man City, say no more, they will spend. Chelsea, say no more, they will spend. Arsenal won't miss Fabregas, Wiltshere, Nasri and Ramsey to fill the void, they just need to strengthen their defence. We need a complete overhaul, left back, centre half, ball player if Meireles goes, holding midfielder and another striker, as if Ngog wears the red shirt again next season, we may as well give up now. If the undertones are anything to go by, come the start of the season, don't expect to see many fresh faces and certainly don't expect top 4.

30 Jun 2011 08:10:53
dear john henry, pls give king kenny 60-70m pounds for adam johnson, charles nzogbia, daniel sturridge and leighton baines. just pay top money for them and lets get the pre season started. all good premier league players, time for 19th.....

If Sunderland don't qualify for europe then Wickham has a release clause of 12 million. Aguero's release clause dropped to 32 million from 42... I have just heard these things while online - ed can you confirm or deny any of these?

Never mind that What's the script if Sunderland get Relegated which to my mind is a damn sight more likely than qualifying for Europe.

Just a thought... Next season KK will use Adam in left wide position.. Henderson in right position wide.. Suarez will be position just behind Carroll... I personnally agreed if we sign Diego, the creativity in our Midfield will go excellent I strongly believed that Adam and Diego will provide goal from free kick...

30 Jun 2011 01:52:40
This isnt a rumour but i'm just wondering

Ed's, if Kenny and Damien were so keen on Wickham and pulled out, does that mean they found someone better? {Ed002's Note - I would not read too much in to a player not joining Liverpool.}

30 Jun 2011 07:36:20
{Ed002's Note - And what if he continues to disrupt and walk out? That is the risk.}
---------
it does represent a risk but so was signing anelka who was disruptive everywhere until liverpool. So was signing suarez a player who engineered a move away from groningen and then ajax aswell and who bit someone. So was signing carroll who had discipline problems and couldn't stop boozing.

I think we should go for diego talent wise an excellent addition to the team, and if anyone thinks he will still be trouble under kenny then they have no faith in his skills as a manager.

Mr E

30 Jun 2011 07:32:49
I don't understand why we're paying around 20mil for downing and not going for Johnson or mata with that money it's ridiculous

30 Jun 2011 01:32:55
{Ed001's Note - bit of a different case, Xabi hadn't been in to see Rafa asking for a big pay rise, Raul has.}

yes, but to be fair, u said he was also promised a pay rise if his first season was good.

30 Jun 2011 03:26:15
im starting to fret a little, not worried as we played well at end of last season, however i hope we r going to play a masterstroke, my thoughts kk knows what is needed lb, lw, backup gk, rw, and young striker, we do not need many def as of the startling performances of flanno, robbo, and kelly, henderson and adam are going to be squad players, i reckon we are going to play glenn johnson right mid next season, kuyt as backup 4 both rm and cf, i also think its nailed on 4 mata cos the other clubs interested cant offer him first team all the time, and diego and he wont be allowed to be big time charlie like he did at juve-it wont go unoticed we to masch from west hams subs bench to barcas champs lge winning team. up u mancs

J W HENRY........... Releases statement (albeit on twitter) about Liverpool's transfer policy.

Liverpool owner John Henry has explained the club's transfer policy is designed to build for long-term success rather than instant gains.

The Reds have been linked with a host of names since Fenway Sports Group bought the club in October and they have backed new manager Kenny Dalglish to rebuild the squad.

But FSG have always intimated they want to implement a strategy similar to the one they successfully used with their baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, acquiring younger players with potential who will have a greater re-sale value.

That was illustrated by this month's £16million signing of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, 21, and the Reds were also interested in 18-year-old Ipswich striker Connor Wickham but were unwilling to match Sunderland's successful bid of £8.1m - rising to £12m.

But speculation linking the club with the likes of 30-year-old Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge prompted Henry to outline the way forward.

"Speculation on players shouldn't include those of a certain age, " he wrote on Twitter.

"We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC."

Wise spending

That prompted a flurry of questions about the club's transfer policy this summer, with some making comparisons with Manchester United, who have already signed Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea for a combined sum of around £50m.

But Henry responded by stressing Liverpool would not be rushing into any big-money signings.

"Everything in sports is overpriced now - especially the cost of winning. But you make your choices based on a plan, " replied the American.

"Some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important."

While Liverpool swiftly re-invested the £56.5m they received for Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel in January, they spent it on the 24-year-old Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, 22.

Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, 25, appears to be edging closer to a move to Anfield while reported target Stewart Downing is probably towards the upper end of Henry's ideal age range as the Aston Villa winger turns 27 in July.

So Liverpool fans we can put to bed rumours of the return of ALONSO, a legend in his own rite in my eyes. Also many other rumours.

BUT It does make me wonder why we want Adam and Downing, 25 and 27 respectively, when there are better options out there.
The likes of Gerrard, Carragher and Kuyt who all fit into the over 30yrs mark are the only ones that deserve to be still at the club, played until they can walk away head held high they put a shift in.(which they have). The rest of the over 30's need to go.
With a midfield of Gerrard, Lucas, Spearing, Meireles, Henderson and the up and coming Shelvey... WHERE DOES ADAM FIT IN?????
Fair enough we may well need Downing, we have no out and out wingers. TURAN is a better option..... as is MARIN....etc etc etc...........
I don't doubt KENNY or COMMOLI to come up with a suprise in the transfer window. Have faith......... DON'T BELIEVE THE PRESS OR NUMEROUS WEBSITES OR RUMOUR MONGERERS.......
Alot of them are all for there own gain and as usual try and dislodge and undermine the good name of LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB.
When we buy, it will be for a good reason..... have faith......... and only believe when its signed sealed and delivered on the OFFICIAL LIVERPOOL WEBSITE...........

LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB is on the up

I eds just thought i would give an insight on the age transfer policy for lfc. Great sight keep up the great work.

The Reds have been linked with a long list of names ever since Fenway Sports Group bought the club in October.

However, FSG has always intimated it wanted to implement a strategy similar to the one it used successfully with its baseball team, Boston Red Sox, acquiring younger players with potential who will have a greater re-sale value.

That was illustrated with the £16 million ($24.04 million) acquisition of Sunderland's England Under-21 midfielder Jordan Henderson earlier this month.

The Reds were also interested in 18-year-old Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham but was unwilling to match Sunderland's bid of £8.1 million ($12.17 million) - rising to £12 million ($18.03 million) - and the player has completed his move to Wearside.

But speculation linking the club with the likes of 30-year-old Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge prompted Henry to underline the way forward.

"Speculation on players shouldn't include those of a certain age, " he wrote on Twitter.

"We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC."

This unsurprisingly prompted a flurry of questions about the club's transfer policy this northern summer, with Henry responding to comparisons between the progress Liverpool had made compared to that of champion Manchester United which has already signed Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea for a combined sum in the region of £50 million ($75.16 million).

"Everything in sports is overpriced now - especially the cost of winning. But you make your choices based on a plan, " was the American's response.

"Some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important."

Looking for better value for money in the transfer market does not rule out major spending though.

I believe we should go for:
-Adam Johnson & James Milner 35m
- Jeffren Suarez, 8m
- Gael Clichy, 7m
- Kjaer 9m
- Stockdale 3m

Total = 63m. 6 Players who could all improve our team.

Liverpool FC principal owner John W Henry used twitter to talk all things LFC.

John W Henry explained the club s transfer policy is designed to build for long-term success rather than instant gains.

He tweeted Speculation on players shouldn t include those of a certain age. We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC

He also admitted that journalist have a impossible job Who has a tougher job than a football journalist in trying to decipher what is going on in this sport with poss transfers

Finally he tweeted about the progress on the Stadia situation an incredible amount of work has been underway on this issue. It would be helpful for fans to get an official update.

Kenny is apparently already losin his rag over carrolls antics his refusal to rest and stay off the beer is not allowing his knee to heal. On top of that he apparently made a pass while sloshed at someone he shouldn't have, I'd say either one of the other players wives or one of the staffs family. Either way he's on his way out as Kenny won't put up with that sh.t

Hi guys,

After my comments last week about us not signing anyone until Friday I would just like the fans to brace themselves for the next few days

Adam will def join with 90% N'Zogbia instead of Downing Also expect a bid to go ahead for Elia, Diego, Barrios an Aguero If offer cnt be reached with Aguero we will go after Cavani ar lazzezzi

Also John Henrys comment today was very good an realistic but we will def spend 70 million this summer. Watch this space guys.

Am hearing Juan mata is not coming and downing is signing fact.
Looks like it could be another 21 years before we win anything, unless we get lucky in the cup again.

You best duck off and get your Man City shirt for the upcoming season.

According to Villa fans Downing is coming to LFC for 18 mill + a poss 4 mill in add ons.They have agreed this because they have agreed a fee of 8 mill for Nzogbia.
If true I would say Villa have the best of the deal.
***************************************

Financially - yes Villa probably have the best of the deal. As far as having a player with consistency, passion and good temperament, LFC win easily in my opinion.

Do you think it's still a chance to sign Fabio Coentrao and are Liverpool still interested?

An enquiry kore than a rumour, but i would just like a bit of clarity on the Liverpool transfer policy. Mainly the idea of resale value. Does this mean that Liverpool shall be mainly looking for players they feel they will be able to sell on for a greater price than they have paid, or does it mean they are looking for players they hope will maintain their value of a greater period of time?
If they are hoping for the first strategy they are not going about it the right way, can any body see Liverpool a couple of years down the line selling on Carrol for more than 35m?
Im just curious?

sup port[suh-pawrt]
- verb (used with object)
1. to hold up; bear
2. to provide a living for
3. to uphold or advocate (a cause)
4. to corroborate (a statement)
- noun
5. supporting or being supported
6. thing or person that supports

- Related Forms
well-sup port ed- adjective
un sup port ed ly- adverb
un der sup port- noun
pre sup port- noun, verb (used with object)

Just wanted to remind a few people exactly what supporting means, iv been honoured to have a season ticket for the last twelve years and have had to endure some terrible times like Roy Evans diamond attack formation, bruno the new zidane cheyruo, jimmy I can't control my feet traore putting the ball in our net and a woman who screams behind me every game for rafa to get his dirk out (kenny doesn't go as well). But through all this ups and downs the one thing that makes Liverpool fans the best is that the support given bonds the team together like the cement between the brickwork holding anfield up, its the support of the fans that makes it,
I for one will be there for the first game singing proudly for what ever team kenny decides to put out, so can all these posters complaining cos were not signing messi and co, look at the old tapes of the 80's and you will notice that the best 100 million pound player is there, its the 13th man as shankly said the crowd ,

Please post as I love this site but it kills me to see the future generation of fans wanting these high paid pin ups playing, shankly wanted men that would run through a wall for Liverpool,

Thanks

Please reply I look forward to the feedback,

Trillionaire

Sorry if this has been covered, but correct me if I'm wrong but the international transfer window opens Friday? How did scum sign de gea on a 5 year deal today?

Also just to put my opinion in the mix I recon Adam, a Johnson, mata and Diego would create amazing options for attack then if we could pick up a left back and a center back I will be happy as larry

Ed's sorry about the rant before, but i'm glad i didn't know then what i know now or it would have been ten fold. Somebody who replied to an earlier post said people, or so called fans have been tweeting John Henry about lack of signing's. I've never used it, wouldn't know how, but does any of the Eds not think that its becoming embassing if this is the case because think its f***ing outrageous. Jonson6 {Ed001's Note - it is extremely embarrassing, people need to grow up a bit.}

"Some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important."
Ed doesn't that just say what some of us have been saying that some transfers may come in early (henderson in this case) but others could come later on but at the end of it they will be here? or am i misinterpreting it. Quote from John Henry by the way {Ed001's Note - he is just saying stop panicking.}

There hasnt been any mention of James McCarthy from Wigan or Shane Long from Reading in the last couple of weeks Do you think they are still possibilities?
Also is there any chance of Xabi coming back - that would be the best signing we could make , in my opinion

Love that the media can't squeeze any solid news out of LFC and are resorting to frustrated and/or recycled links

just wondering as john henry has come out and said we are only looking to buy for the long term, does that mean the return of alonso may never happen, no only this summer or the future?
Thanks

At least Diego downed his tools off the pitch, not like Torres who clearly downed his on the pitch. Except when we played Chelsea, and left us in as much if not more s**t as Diego did Wolfsburg. Chopper Read.

Do you reckon the lack of transfer activety is down to the fact that most players contracts run from the 30th of June so when trying to sign a player wait until the day after and his contract is shorter by a year?
