Joe Gomez called up to national squad for games against Germany and Brazil. Fingers crossed he gets a shot at CB to see how good he can be. Even if he makes mistakes (learning curve), it will be good to see him rub shoulders in his favoured position against some of the best and show if he is ready to be a regular CB at Anfield. Could save us some money on an extra CB we may have to buy.
Good Luck Joe!

Sorry bud my bad.

02 Nov 2017 19:05:25
Looks like Klopp should have most of the first team to work with over this international break, with only A handful of player getting called up. Salah, Mane, Chamberlain and Sturridge most notably staying at Melwood.

Hopefully this one won't screw up our momentum and preparations like the last one did with that in mind!

99% certain of Mane joining up with Senegal, they called him up when he was injured, now he is back training, he will go with them. Interesting to see if Coutinho plays for Brazil though! ;)

02 Nov 2017 21:35:14
I'm looking forward when it's out the way, hate the international break! It makes such a boring couple of weeks not to mention we don't know who will return fit.

02 Nov 2017 21:48:19
Not sure if Mane and Cou will join up as Cou is injured and Mane may have to be evaluated before we can know if he can join up with Senegal or not.

02 Nov 2017 22:16:25
its not up to us though Loris, he will travel and be assessed by Senegal's ''doctor'' who will no doubt pass him fit.

02 Nov 2017 23:17:31
You are correct there, Kloppiskloon.

02 Nov 2017 18:25:22
Hey ed001, do you know what happened to dan crowley? He was once touted as the finest talent to come out from Arsenal's academy since Jack Wilshere.

Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he is at Willem II.}

02 Nov 2017 20:00:23
Thanks. What happened to him? Did he have some injury nightmare, or just went off the book?

{Ed001's Note - he was out in Holland on loan and Willem II liked him so signed him permanently. Arsenal just didn't think he was making progress. He didn't improve after joining them from Villa at about 16 or 17. Maybe he wasn't working hard enough, I don't know but I am not aware of any injury problems.}

02 Nov 2017 17:52:24
did anyone hear roy keanes comments on Liverpool that were dull and going nowhere was he on one of those buses that united parked at anfeild when we played them recently and this from a thug who purposely went out to injure alf-inge-haland.

Believable13 Unbelievable1

02 Nov 2017 18:11:31
He's also assistant manager of an Ireland team that concedes the majority of possession and territory to everybody. Even Georgia and Wales. He's hardly the first pundit not to practice what he preaches though.

Gotta love the clever little "I wouldn't watch them if they were in my back garden" remark too. Oh I see what you did there, Roy, you little scoundrel. All you forgot was to say you'd close the curtains.

02 Nov 2017 18:59:38
Might as well take notice of Joey Barton if you listen to that fool 😂

In fact, that would be nice. Put Barton and Keane in a room together and just see what unfolds over a 48 hour period with nothing but Wayne Rooney's jock strap sweat for sustenance.

02 Nov 2017 20:24:48
Roy Keane is a failed managers slagging off successful managers even the man u brigade in Ireland or sick of his nonsense talk.

02 Nov 2017 22:21:41
Why are people paying attention to what Roy Keane says? When did his opinion become relevant?

02 Nov 2017 22:58:35
He was a top midfielder though,

02 Nov 2017 23:21:49
Lfcder, He was a top midfielder as well as a thug, a bully and a failed manager who is obsessed with LFC and prolly Klopp. The only reason he is a pundit is cos he could not hack it as a manager. All these things can be correct at the same time.

03 Nov 2017 06:23:13
Him slagging klopp and mourinho is like biscan saying Keane was a bad player.

05 Nov 2017 02:13:47
A bit like Souness then?

02 Nov 2017 17:10:38
Hey Ed001! Is there an update on whether mane will be joining senegal for the matches or will he be staying back at Liverpool?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't expect him to be fit.}

02 Nov 2017 18:23:20
Thank Goodness for that. I just seen pictures of him in training and was about to ask the same question.

02 Nov 2017 19:11:46
He will join up with Senegal no doubt.

02 Nov 2017 21:55:14
Disagree, Kloppisakloon. He will have to be evaluated by the Senegalese medical team first and if his not fit, he won't play. Players' safety is paramount. Belgium selected Kompany for the last set of games even tho he was injured and he played none of those games.

02 Nov 2017 22:22:12
Belgium had already qualified big time to the world cup and they used eden hazard when he had just returned to training as is the same with Mane, Senegal on the other hand need points to qualify to the world cup and it's a different situation with different circumstances, Mane is Senegal's best player. Belgium have Alderweireld and Vertongen!

02 Nov 2017 14:42:34
Credit to him and to Klopp for showing faith in him. Hopefully, this will do massive good for his confidence going forward.

02 Nov 2017 15:13:20
Shame he'll play 90 minutes both games and get injured but other than that awesome news.

02 Nov 2017 15:16:53
Hijkle, come on, man. A bit of positivity would definitely help right now.

02 Nov 2017 15:20:49
Always one. Well done to the lad.

02 Nov 2017 16:26:15
Is it as a rb or cb or cover for both I wonder.

02 Nov 2017 16:44:10
Starting at CB GS has said. Oh and well done Hiijkle you just couldn't leave it.

02 Nov 2017 18:15:03
yeah well done gomes. fair play. ease up on hiijkle, if he were called up for Trinidad then we would all be worrying about his fitness after the internationals. hiijkle is not the first person to worry about our players getting injured on international duty, it happens every time.

when you look at the competition at cb for England there isn't an overwhelming amount of quality. cahill and jones, smalling and gomes, that's about it.

02 Nov 2017 13:27:01
Nice to see lovren sharing player of the month with mo salah. Yes he's had a bit of a mare the last few weeks but death threats towards his family by so called fans? These people are scum. Its a game at the end of the day. There are some vile people in this world.

Believable15 Unbelievable6

02 Nov 2017 13:57:15
Well done to all who voted, I'm sure without this site he probably wouldn't of got as far as he did with the votes, I'm sure it'll mean a lot to him knowing more then the odd few idiots there are normal people who do support him no matter what.

02 Nov 2017 14:33:47
CORLEONE.
I totally agree with you weather people say it was deserved or not it shows there are more decent people out there than a few idiots.

02 Nov 2017 14:44:58
His award is a strong message to him that regardless of what he is going through on and off the pitch, he IS one of us and we will support him through out his travails. At the same time, this is a message to the muppets out there who targeted his family: You are NOT welcome there and we will defeat you every time. YNWA and congrats to Salah and Lovren!

02 Nov 2017 14:48:48
Too right redsteve mate :)

02 Nov 2017 15:11:00
LORIS
FULLY support your comments well said.

02 Nov 2017 15:16:11
cheers CORLEONE i said the other day weather your a top footballer have a few bob in the bank if you have off field problems you need all the support you can get just look at the struggles of Clarke Carlisle.

02 Nov 2017 16:28:39
Cud be crazy but sometimes when the world is against you And nothing is going right, something like this that shows you're not alone and a little solidarity can hopefully allow him to turn a corner.

02 Nov 2017 18:18:31
Agreed, it was a fine gesture. I can imagine the moment Lovren was told he was joint player of the month as voted for by fans. At first he might have thought it was a cruel joke or an ironic bashing but then he would've realised what it meant. I bet he was touched, especially if he is going through some kind of depression. Well done all those who voted. And let's be honest, he will probably play better for it.

02 Nov 2017 20:29:07
Dont agree he shouuld get millions of appologies on social media but no player of the month when you had a shocking month on the field.

02 Nov 2017 21:38:26
Whilst I would normally agree that a player should only get player of the month for footballing reasons, however, in this instance, I am all for an exception and I am so pleased he has been given the award. His wife, family and children have received a death threat which is so sad, unfair, diabolical, disappointing and shocking.

This is the right message to send to Lovren, his family and any other player that plays for us now or may sign in the future.

02 Nov 2017 22:01:36
Irish, that is your opinion and you are welcome to it. Clearly, the majority disagree with you cos we know that he is having a rough time on and off the pitch and have chosen to vote for him as more of a sign of support for him and his fam over the pitch as we recognize that football is less important than life.

02 Nov 2017 22:18:02
well put Loris.

02 Nov 2017 22:56:01
What one must remember is that it might not have been Liverpool fans sending out the death threats. We have some pretty vile footballing enemies and when you go to certain away games, I won’t name them on here, it really does hit home.

Anyway, what a great gesture and I hope Lovren and his family get over this awful “ stuff “ they’ve been subjected too.

02 Nov 2017 23:24:07
That's the spirit, Drogie. Well put, sir.

02 Nov 2017 23:27:31
Fans can be so fickle sometimes.
The player of the month award should be granted on merit alone.
It’s not fair on the other players who deserve it on football grounds.
If you want to support Lovren send him a nice letter, card tweet or an email
I’m sure that would mean a lot more to the man.

03 Nov 2017 06:47:43
It's seems like charity to me and I would think lovern would be embarrassed as well give him love on social media but plaudits for he s performances which have been shocking.

02 Nov 2017 13:20:37
hi ed 001 i was qondering what do you thing of Emyln Hughes aka crazy horse as a player. do you think he is a legend for Lfc. I have never watched him play but every time i read about Liverpool history his name is always there. i personnaly feel that he along witha few other Shankly had is the base of Shankly and to an extent Liverpool history.
if you want you can add him to the Legends list too
thank you.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I have not seen Emlyn play, but he definitely figures as a legend of the club. He was a big part of the Shankly era and deserves inclusion without doubt.

I have added him to the list.}

02 Nov 2017 14:25:04
I watched Emlyn Hughes play many times, he was a huge player for Liverpool, so much heart, hated getting beat, always going forward, I would really want him in this side, truly a great player .

02 Nov 2017 17:10:20
crazy horse watched play so many times and his celabration after scoring goal was so good to watch great player for Liverpool.

02 Nov 2017 17:18:50
he also earned 62 England caps too 👍.

02 Nov 2017 22:56:54
Great player.

02 Nov 2017 13:16:07
Ed001 good match review mate, imo surely this was a good chance to play grujic from the start, 5 minutes here and there are doing him no good at all, we didn't need milner, Henderson or wijnaladum to see off such a poor side, he could have played alongside can and AOC and got some vital experience.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he has to earn the right to get gametime mate, he has not done that.}

02 Nov 2017 15:12:15
It’s easy to say Klopp should have picked Grujic, Woodburn etc after the game when we have won but imagine the uproar if Klopp had picked a bunch of kids and we hadn’t got a result. Just be happy with the result, if these guys work hard and are good enough they’ll get their chance.

02 Nov 2017 15:20:47
Spot on, Smeg. This is not the time for mucking about. We are not in a position to doing such things esp. seeing as we are not sure to qualify as things stand right now so Klopp did the right thing in respecting Maribor and going out there to get the 3 points, job done. The youngsters will get their chances later but for right now, we need the wins however way we can get them so no screwing around, please.

02 Nov 2017 12:52:57
Hi Ed,

Was wondering if Fabio Cannavaro was on your list?

An interesting character with a very impressive career considering he was a 5'9 Centre back along with off field controversies. World Cup and Ballon d'Or winner with over 130 caps for a top country.

Would be great if you could add him to the list if he's not on there?

Cheers.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he is on there mate don't worry.}

02 Nov 2017 17:31:34
How did you rate him personally as a player Ed?

{Ed001's Note - he is one of the best defenders of the last 30 years. Showed how you don't need to be tall to be able to play big.}

02 Nov 2017 20:31:34
I loved Cannavaro. He and Baresi inspired me as a defender. I would break the bank to get either of them into our side at the moment.

02 Nov 2017 12:30:20

02 Nov 2017 14:24:18
Salah keeps scoring and the egyptians keep voting.

02 Nov 2017 10:41:17
Hello ED1.I am fifty two and I remember that I was impressed with the Argentinian Passarella. He was not tall for a centre back but he was great in the air. In your opinion, was he good?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, it was before my time really, I only vaguely remember him.}

02 Nov 2017 20:57:45
From what I remember of him he was solid, not much got past him but he could play as well, was an all round excellent defender. I think he was the captain of Argentina if I remember correctly, and very well respected, not so well known here but there wasnt the social media etc that you get now.

I do remember him being on the front cover of a huge world cup poster on my bedroom wall though 😄 (among others), at a time when the World Cup seemed to be a much bigger thing than it is now. No Champions League, Sky etc back then.

Good shout though HL, had forgotten all about him.

02 Nov 2017 10:45:06
lads, would you be happy with hendo naby and lallana/ oxlade as our midfield next season? I assume Can and coutinho are off.

Believable4 Unbelievable3

02 Nov 2017 11:06:56
If they left, I'd like a proper dm with Keita and one other at the side, say gini. Then lallana hendo grujic can switch in and out.

02 Nov 2017 11:23:48
No. I have backed Klopp and Hendo throughout this experiment, but it hasn't worked out. I want the club to act on the interest in Obiang. Then we can have Obiang sitting, With Keita, Gini, Lallana and Hendo competing for the two positions ahead of him. Grujic is being trained to play the holding role in the u23's and it looks like it suits him so he can cover Obiang in the deeper role if required.

Chamberlain can cover injuries in the more attacking roles, but he is a winger by trade and should be focused on fighting for Mane's place. Mane has started picking up injuries far too regularly and there is serious interest in him from Europe, so the Ox may have a real chance at making that position his own if he can just add some goals to his game. I don't want him side tracked by a desperate attempt to shoe horn him into midfield. He's looked good going forward in the last few games. Square pegs go in square holes. Even if (touch wood) we can keep hold of Mane, the Ox should be putting pressure on him and Salah to perform. With Keita on his way, we have enough in midfield.

A midfield of Henderson sitting, with Keita and Ox ahead of him is 2 players out of their natural position. Not for me. It is too risky, especially considering Keita is a bit of a hot head. If he got his marching orders, do you have faith in Henderson and Ox to stay in relative control of a football match?

Can and Coutinho are definitely off, but if we got in Obiang and Keita i don't think we'd miss them. Keita is at the heart of every Leipzig attack, and Obiang is easily better than Can at protecting the defence. Additionally, Henderson needs to be pushed further forward where his pressing is effective, instead of just leaving a gap in front of the defence.

Klopp and Hendo have to accept that their little experiment didn't work out, for the good of the club, and Chamberlain needs to accept he is a very good winger who could make a name for himself there if he stays focused.

02 Nov 2017 11:58:04
Good piece MK. Not for the first time I agree with your comments, mate.

02 Nov 2017 12:37:49
Agree Mk.

02 Nov 2017 12:37:57
Great one, MK. Obiang is the one we should be going after. The Hendo experiment should be done away with. With Naby coming in along with Lallana/ Hendo, we need a true DM to protect the CB's and defence. We were seriously interested in Obiang and we need to get him in. Or we can get Nzonzi who plays in a similar high press system at Seville. Klopp has shown that he can learn from his mistakes and tweak his system to suit the PL. Not playing with a true DM in such an open system has not worked so he has to adapt to that and get one in. A midfield of Obiang/ N'Zonzi, Hendo/ Lallana and Naby would be a good first choice three in CM with Wiji, Grujic, Woodie and Ox as depth.

02 Nov 2017 13:00:51
Agreed Loris. That midfield looks so much more solid in my opinion. Henderson/ Lallana are both very good players around the edge of the box with link up play and delicate touches. Plus they are intelligent when pressing.

However the midfield is light weight and unbalanced, which will be even more of an issue when Can and Coutinho go. I can see Keita really taking our team by the balls and making it his own with Coutinho not there though. He loves running at teams, his vision is superb, he presses like a man possessed, and he scores and creates goals. He is exactly the kind of dynamic midfielder we've missed since we lost Gerrard. He will want to be the driving force of our midfield and with Coutinho there, i think they would get in each others way, even though they play in totally different styles. They both follow the ball and demand it off their team mates.

If we had Keita/ Gini driving us forward and Lallana/ Hendo pressing though, we would need an intelligent, more defensive player behind. Obiang or N'Zonzi would be my picks as well.

I'm really hoping Woodburn is given chances though over the next few years. In 2 or 3 years time he should be knocking Hendo/ Lallana out of the team. I don't know why we would want to sign Brandt or Meyer when Woodburn has as much potential as them and won't sulk about waiting for his chances.

02 Nov 2017 13:03:23
Adam, I would be interested to know if you saw Grujic over 90 minutes against Man Utd U23 just over a week ago.

02 Nov 2017 13:41:12
Not over the full 90 mate. Just highlights. He was very impressive though from what i could find, and from what i read.

02 Nov 2017 14:37:10
Don't think Pedro Obiang is the answer to improving us into a title winning side.

Not good enough for me and would be another Robertson, Klavan, Matip style signing of a stop-gap.

{Ed002's Note - Obiang won't be moving to LFC.}

02 Nov 2017 14:52:40
Spot on, MK. Naby is the real deal and you described him perfectly.

Navy Keith, I disagree. Obiang is the exact player we need or N'Zonzi would be a good shout as he plays in the same system we play at Seville. These are intelligent footballers who are doing a great job at their teams esp. N'Zonzi who has really grown as a player since he left The School of Destructive Football under Pulis at Stoke and has had good coaching from better managers like Unai Emery (3 time EL winner and manager of PSG) and now Eduardo Berizzo (ex asistant to Marcelo Bielsa in the Chile national team) . The players you mentioned may be stop gaps BUT N'Zonzi and Obiang are no stop gaps. They are the real deal.

02 Nov 2017 18:23:46
it isn't just hendo, ox, Lallana and kieta though. we have gini and milner too. But no, I don't think that is enough. Milner is quickly getting worse. he can still do a job but I'm not sure how much longer he will be at Liverpool. Aoc is a winger really eh and Lallana is no spring chicken. if Can leaves he is replaced by keita so we just need to replace couts. we will have a tonne of cash to do so, I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem.

02 Nov 2017 10:17:48
Hi

Stefan di Vrij being mentioned in the press. Is he a leader and organiser of the defence? Who do you think, that is available, would be a great addition to try and solve our defensive issues? Great site and thank you.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

02 Nov 2017 10:33:01
Organiser? Yes.

However he is slower than Klavan. Would help on set pieces no doubt, and he can play! However, we'd still get done in behind against the bigger teams.

02 Nov 2017 10:38:32
We need to start looking at signing defenders who will work in a partnership.

So if we assume Gomez is going to get a run in the side then what are his strengths and weaknesses.
Biggest weakness is lack of experience and I think he's not dominant in the air, understandable for a young lad. His biggest strength is his speed and ability to recover a situation as well as his ball skills.

So we need a defender who's experienced and dominant in the air and can lead a defensive line. Might sound obvious but the recruitment team needs a lot of direction.

02 Nov 2017 10:47:43
Sami Hyypia wasn’t quick, but he knew how to use his physical strength and he had an extra yard in his head because he was a very intelligent footballer. So I’d take a defender who had the intelligence to make up for their pace.

02 Nov 2017 10:56:23
Agree Mr Dennis. Even Carragher was not blessed with pace, but he was the only voice you could hear shouting and screaming to organise that defence. Read an interview with Phil Thompson recently who stated Van Dyke is not that kind of player so how would he help?

My question is: Who is out there that is available that has those traits?

02 Nov 2017 10:56:37
Well said Ron. Gomez is also better on the right side of the partnership, so we should target someone who plays on the left side.

I think that is why the club wants Van Dijk. He is as dominant in the air as you can get, he prefers the left side, he is club captain at Southampton etc. The only problem is he likes to go walk about.

You could argue though, that he just doesn't suit Southampton in open play. Their defensive line is ridiculously deep, and Van Dijk likes to get involved im the play. For him to do that at Southampton he has to come about 40-60 yards out of the defensive line. In our team where we dominate possession and press high up the park, Van Dijk can get involved without having to massively vacate his position. It might suit him. He does need to sort out those lapses in concentration though, so that he gets himself into position a split second faster.

Macca seemed certain the club would sign him. I think everyone within the club still believes we will. He wants to come, Klopp wants to sign him. He wouldn't be my choice, but I'm trying to understand the logic for signing him and there is some there. City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool are the interested clubs. I think that says a little about his abilities, even if he his over rated to some extent. If he is the player Klopp wants, then let's just hope the club can get it done.

02 Nov 2017 11:02:33
Hyypia played in a deep defense.

02 Nov 2017 11:25:23
True Dennis, but Hyypia played in a deep defensive. Klopp won't adjust his style so we need a centre back with the pace to keep up with strikers running beyond them.

02 Nov 2017 12:41:48
Most Strikers are generally quick and they will always be running forward. A defender needs to turn to chase that striker so unless the defender is Usain Bolt 9 times out of 10 they will always struggle to match that striker even if they are just as quick as them. What we need are defenders who read the game and are in position ready before the striker even breaks into his stride. That's where players like Hypia were great.

{Ed001's Note - you are forgetting that the striker is very rarely able to sprint flat out, due to needing to control the ball or hit a shot. That is why someone like Sol Campbell got away with being positionally inept, he was quick enough to get back in and make a challenge.}

02 Nov 2017 12:42:18
De Vrij is injury prone, slow and will be bullied by PL CF's who are built like tanks. Comparing Hyppia with any of our defenders is a false narrative. Tho he was an intelligent footballer, he played in a deep defence and he would struggle in ours esp. w/ o a true DM in Hammann protecting him. VVD may not be my choice but he is a step in the right direction, plays on the left side of the defence and is powerful in the air. He is not vocal and his languid approach to the game is a concern BUT that can be coached out of him, IMO. Gomez does need to get more games cos he can be a great asset to us in the future.

02 Nov 2017 18:26:28
Gomes is clearly seen as the future of liverpools cb hence the chasing of vvd who plays on the left.

Cheers mate, agree with all especially your notes on TAA and Milner.

{Ed001's Note - thank mate, bit of a quick one that one as there is not really a lot to say on some of the players without just repeating myself. While I know certain players have their deficiencies, there is no point just going on about them, and it can be difficult to find something new to talk about!}

02 Nov 2017 09:23:56
The worst thing i noticed about Milner last night was how he consistently running into others players spaces, couldn't for the life of me understand why he was so high up the pitch, at times he was virtually in the face of Salah or Firmino and ran the same channels they would have run.

{Ed001's Note - that is something I have mentioned in the past, which is why I have not mentioned it this time. It is a major problem in my opinion. He doesn't create space for others with his runs, he condenses it.}

02 Nov 2017 09:31:15
Yeah I know what you mean mate, not much to discuss with that game to be honest, like you said yourself, a very similar game to the Huddersfield one which I'm not moaning about of course :)

I'm hoping this is our turning point, we are far from perfect but we are looking better (debatable in many ways I know) . West Ham Saturday, we win there surely it's the start of our good period? one can only hope. I don't like repeating myself but I want to see Karius have a game where it's a challenge for him, WH won't be easy, no game is in this league, stick him in goal. Is Ward still injured?

{Ed001's Note - fingers crossed mate! Yes Ward is out for a while I expect.}

02 Nov 2017 09:53:21
Why is it, every time we start playing well and pick up momentum, they put an international break in front of us 😂.

02 Nov 2017 09:55:47
Great read, Ed. Spot on, about Milner. The guys offers nothing in midfield, nothing at all. It is mind-boggling. He runs into other people, runs into other people's spaces hence congesting the spaces that are already tight and his set piece deliveries are hit and miss.

Even if he was brought on to take penalties, he even can't do that anymore cos the penalty he took last night was just dreadful. How do you show the GK from the get go, where you will place the ball and hope to score? You have to have your poker face on or give the GK the eyes so you can fool the him. The GK watched him the whole time on his run up and didn't have to break a sweat to know where Milner was going with it. And him having an assist does not nullify the poor game he had. It should not. Anyway, great 3 points and on to WH.

02 Nov 2017 10:15:35
Sturridge loves playing West Ham and is in good goal scoring form. If we play how we know we can, I'd happily back him to score this weekend. He's quite capable of a hat trick to be honest.

02 Nov 2017 14:12:14
Great review ED1 as per, not sure why we kept trying to whip the ball in vs 7 defenders when our first one two move gets a sweet goal from Can. Also how about a one off review of Tottenham bringing down Real? Just as it was such a big win and a shock too.

{Ed001's Note - so long as you whip it in early then nothing wrong with crossing, though it makes sense to get more bodies in the box if you intend to do so.

As for a review of the Spurs game, it was not really a shock to most people, Madrid have been hopeless this season. Zidane has been getting by on being Zizou and now he is facing some setbacks he is being found out. Plus I never saw it to review it, I watched us play.}

02 Nov 2017 14:41:29
3 points from the West Ham game would give us a huge lift, can the team actually practice taking pens, we have missed the last four, yet another stat that is a big negative, we might need a goal soon, and need to start putting them pens away .

02 Nov 2017 15:07:30
Ed, RM were dreadful from start to finish in the Spurs game. They did not seem to have to break a sweat to beat them. There are lots of issues with that Real team right now. Sergio Ramos was exposed for the poor defender he has become w/ o the fleet-footed Varane there to cover for his shambles. ZZ also went to a 3 at the back system which made matters worse and even Isco and Ronaldo took sly digs at ZZ for doing that, saying that the change completely left the team at sea.

ZZ has never been tested as a manager. Until no and we will now find out if he is a good man manager or if he was he just came in in the right place or the right time. ZZ, over to you.

{Ed001's Note - from what I saw of his time with the B team, he was the latter defo. He did not impress at all, other than just being Zizou. I was shocked he got the job, even more shocked that it went so well initially. I think Ronaldo proved just how good he actually is over the last couple of seasons.}

02 Nov 2017 17:41:21
i thought milner had a really good game, bar the penalty miss. he was industrious and creative and he didn't stop working. should've scored in the first half instead of being unselfish and cutting the ball back to alex. I'm not saying he did everything perfect but surely his performance didn't warrant people knocking him? over the two games he was great. against lesser opposition he can definitely do a job, doesn't seem to shine in the big games anymore but last night I thought "milner can still do a job"

02 Nov 2017 18:36:32
a fair article ed01. we were pretty poor to be honest, we don't look the same team as last season. especially in the last month or so. The urgency seems gone eh. its good enough against Huddersfield and Maribor but I worry about home games against spurs and city. we have Chelsea soon and we don't look up to it atm. I hope we find the form of last season soon.

I was worried when milner stepped up for the penalty, he was breathing so deep, he didn't look relaxed at all and I thought he might miss. so don't worry dude, we jinxed it together. i'm torn with Milner, he did do some good stuff last night but we don't look as good with him in the side, so I think you're right to some extent although I think he can do a job against smaller teams and it must be worth having his experience at the club?

{Ed001's Note - we have no shortage of experience though, it is quality we lack. Milner's only real use is as a utility player and he does not want to be one, I think it is best for both parties if he is sold as soon as possible.}

02 Nov 2017 19:24:35
he is on really high wages too eh? I don't think his pay is relative to how important he is for us. He isn't really that important. We have five midfielders who are in front of him imo. hendo, can, gine, Lallana and coutinio. with grujic waiting in the wings and even aoc who wants to play there. althought he is surely a better winger than cm. i'm not completely adverse to him as a centre mid (alex) I haven't seen him play there enough to make a real judgement but that tells me he isn't a cm or I would have seen him playing there!

I think milner probably runs a lot because he knows he isn't playing in the pl so he can burn himself out. Saying that he played last week didn't he? yes. I dunno with milner. Just when you're ready to write him off he does something good. He won't be sold in January but perhaps its time to part company in the summer. Stoke a beckon.

02 Nov 2017 08:45:54
Have Liverpool turned a corner in relation to beating team's that games focus totally on defence? They should a lot of composure the last couple of games and didn't get frustrated. As for Matip Ed01 has been spot on for example at one point last night he just stuck out a lazy leg and let the Maribor player by him with ease. Anyways happy with the win onwards and upwards.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

02 Nov 2017 09:25:55
West Ham will be the real test in my opinion, very few teams come to Anfield to attack these days and we have conceded 1 goal in the PL at home compared to 15 away goals.

02 Nov 2017 09:31:58
I wouldn't read to much into Maribor and Huddersfield were at Anfield where we've had no problems. West Ham is the litmus test, if we get a good result there then I'll start getting optimistic again.

02 Nov 2017 09:39:36
So far this season we've played 3 teams in the bottom half of the league. Palace, Leicester and Huddersfield. We've beaten all 3 of them 1-0, 2-3 and 3-0 respectively.

In the Champions league, there is a clear weakest team in the group and across both legs we've beaten Maribor 0-7 and 3-0.

Every game we've played where you would say we should be winning, we've won. The draws against Burnley, Newcastle and Watford are frustrating as Mignolet cost us all 3 games with an individual error, but those 3 teams are destined to finish in the top half of the table this season and he likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have all dropped point against them too.

I think the real issue is the manner in which we capitulated against Spurs and Man City. It has put a real negative spin on an otherwise decent season so far. To lose both games by such an embarrassing margin has made us a bit of a laughing stock. Though keep in mind, we made Arsenal a laughing stock as well.

Top of our CL group, and just 4 points off of 3rd place. Looking at our fixtures so far, I'd have taken that at the start of the season. It will be tough this year though. There are 6 teams good enough to finish in a CL place. I think we have enough to climb above Arsenal and Chelsea though. They look poor this season. We have to carry on dismantling teams in the bottom half though, starting with West Ham on Saturday!

02 Nov 2017 10:03:23
I agree with you, MK. We are top of our CL group and are 3 points off 4th and 4 points off 2nd. We are 7 points off 2nd BUT that can change this week if we win and certain results go our way. We have done much better vs low block teams this season than last and the numbers bear that out.

The problem is that the manner in which we lost the two games we lost (with the errors that come with them) and the way we drew to Newcastle and Watford (the Burnley game is diff. IMO cos we created enough to score 3 goals and had a penalty nit given) that caused the panic and the media in their diabolical way, pounced on it. They are quiet now BUT they will be back on Sat if we lose to WH and the defence crashes again.

Top 4 will be tough this season so it will come to who can beat the lesser teams and win it's home games on a consistent basis. As for Chelsea and Aresenal, if Chelsea lose to Utd then Conte will be up against it and Arsenal are one hiding (at City? ) away from meltdown mode.

02 Nov 2017 13:14:34
for me even the battering we got at spurs or city makes any difference. my concern is that i don't see progress in the whole team. As Mk said in one of this post that players are playing out of position, there is no DM to cover our fragile defence, these are my concern which are not being addressed at this moment. yes we are still in the runnning for 4/ 3 but are we really improving? do we see the team different from the one last season? we are still struggling to break down defence. i personnaly don't see a lot of improvment from last season, my favorite thing from last nights game was the second goal, 1-2 and boom right corner. those are the fast play i like to see. we can do it but we as a team likes to pass sideway, backwards and even forward without any real speed or intent.

02 Nov 2017 15:15:07
Crazy, how are we still struggling to break down defenses when we just smashed two low block teams 13-0 in three games? We also beat CP 1-0 at Anfield. The only teams we failed to beat were Newcastle and Burnley, in games were we created enough but did not take our chances and by the way, we took points in those games as against last season where we would have lost those games. I know you dislike Klopp and you wanted him gone but now, you are just moaning for moaning sake.

You say you want one-two BOOM type fluid football. How is that going to happen with a team playing 10 men behind the ball esp. without 3 of our most creative players in Cou, Lallana and Mane? Klopp is winning games w/ o his creative players vs low block teams and that is progress already BUT clearly, it may never be good enough for you cos the guy cannot do anything right in your eyes.

02 Nov 2017 16:15:34
if Liverpool as a team was really improving we would be higer up the table. everyone around us is playing bad but we Lfc give each other the assurance than we are only few point away from 4 or 3rd. Instead we should be taking full advantage of every other teams failure and mount a proper challenge instead of silly excuses.
yes the last few games have been good but please don't tell me there is marked improvement in the team. every team has injury so Kloop is not the first one to encounter this.

02 Nov 2017 08:22:41
Hi eds1 do you do match reviews on the champions league games?
Matip got done twice last night so so easy to go past him I think it was about 65 mins in my 9 year old could run passed him 🙈Anyway you only win what's put in front of you. 👍🏻.

{Ed001's Note - I am writing it now mate.}

02 Nov 2017 07:17:16
Did anyone manage to watch how Keita got on in his champions league match vs Porto? I saw that RB lost 3-1 but would be interested to hear how he got on despite the disappointing result.

Red Sandman.

02 Nov 2017 09:41:34
All I'm aware of is apparently he made more tackles then any other player on the pitch (6).

02 Nov 2017 10:48:52
The sooner he can arrive the better.

02 Nov 2017 07:16:47
Good Morning ED001

I noticed that you have been asking the posters for names of "legends" of the game to write articles about.

The one name that I have not seen on there is, in my eyes, the legendry Billy Liddel. Quite a remarkable footballer and man.

It would be an interesting read for others to know he also served in the second world war in the RAF and still managed to score 228 goals for the club, and all the justice for peace campaigning he did post retirement.

Also, do you have Eusebio on your list of to do's?

Regards.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - both are on there mate.}

02 Nov 2017 08:26:32
Do you have the romanian Haggi? or Bebeto? Cheers boss :)

{Ed001's Note - yes mate.}

02 Nov 2017 08:59:58
Thanks ED1, I will look forward to reading the Billy Liddel piece

All the best.

{Ed001's Note - I am looking forward to researching it. My great-uncle used to go on and on about him being the greatest ever.}

02 Nov 2017 09:31:26
And Garrincha, the Brazil legend?

{Ed001's Note - yes mate.}

02 Nov 2017 09:57:57
Hi Ed, is Liam “chippy Brady on the list?

{Ed001's Note - he is now.}

02 Nov 2017 10:05:13
Ed, don't know if you have any Russians on the list BUT may I propose Alexander Zavarov (ex Juve) and Alexander Mostovoi, two of the best playmakers in European football history?

{Ed001's Note - added both.}

02 Nov 2017 15:55:02
Lee Bowyer? XD.

{Ed001's Note - somehow I don't think he will ever get legend status outside the ranks of the National Front and other scummy racist groups.}

02 Nov 2017 02:42:29
I knew the ox would come good. In his last few performances he has shown, imo, why Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool were so keen to sign him. I think he has shown what we expected and more. The pace and the power. But his inter-play has been great too and his delivery and supply looks very promising also. People have a bit of a downer on English players I think, they don't seem as glamourous. Ox was always going to be an exciting signing, I don't get why everyone didn't realise straight away. You could say he has played against lesser opposition but these teams are still at a high level. Huddersfield are mid table in an elite European league and Maribor are in the champions league so its not like he has only performed against dumplings. Klopp has man managed well imo, he has held the ox back a little but it has made him play with a desire to impress and with added passion. So far so good concerning AOC. Now he has to perform in bigger games.

Believable7 Unbelievable5

02 Nov 2017 05:53:09
I think the Ox has had a decent start to his LFC career. I think it's only 2 starts though and the rest from the bench. When Mane regains fitness he will likely go back to the bench though for the majority of games.

02 Nov 2017 07:59:09
I think it was just 40 million on yet another attacker and for what seems a bench player for the foreseeable future.

Mane firmino salah
Coutinho
Hendo can

Keita next year.

At the time we needed a cb. It wasn't nothing against ox but was there not a 30/ 40 million cb we could of got in the last few days of the window.

02 Nov 2017 08:13:51
Can and Coutinho won't be here next year so maybe Ox will get more game time then.

02 Nov 2017 10:11:52
Top, spending on Ox did not prevent us from getting a CB as money was NEVER the issue. You are aware that you can want a good CB and also want to add depth to the squad in the wide areas as both were needed. You can walk and chew gum at the same time. We did not get a CB cos Klopp did not find a suitable one apart from VVD. You may disagree with that BUT that is the fact. This was not a case of either we get Ox or VVD or another CB. It was us trying to get both, a CB and Ox.

02 Nov 2017 11:54:07
i think we actually spent much more money than people realize. The transfer fee on Naby Keita has already been registered with eufa. A little sexy number of 63 million £.

02 Nov 2017 12:43:21
Loris you do also realise we never actually put a single bid in for VVD.

{Ed001's Note - that was not down to money.}

02 Nov 2017 00:33:37
Eds, I saw something that the attendance for tonight's game was 47-48000. Why so low on a champions league night?!? We expanded the stadium I would have thought it was always full especially on a night like this.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - for starters, I believe the attendance is less on a European night because of differences in segregation from a Premier League game. Secondly Maribor did not take their full allowance. Thirdly it was Maribor in midweek. If your budget is stretched it is Maribor you will chooce to miss.}

02 Nov 2017 07:59:55
Too expensive, I could go to spain for a week holiday for the same price it'd of cost me should I have gone last night when you consider travel etc. That is fact, Spain for a week or go watch us slam Maribor for 90 mins? - Just an example and putting it as simple as it is, if they lowered ticket prices they'd pack it no matter what night/ game, but they won't do that.

02 Nov 2017 09:11:55
2 home wins against poor opposition but Did the job.
If that turns into another win away at West Ham it's been a decent turn around since the Spurs smashing we got.

02 Nov 2017 09:36:58
Yet there were no tickets avavliable on the website.
