I think if we do get a striker we should try Suarez on the wing when he comes back from ban. He's quick(ish) he can take players on and he's graet at getting to the by line there's just never any one there to get on the end of it. Get a striker and play Suarez on the wing. Probably Bellamy and Suarez either side of a 4-3-3 ? In the middle

The thing that makes Suarez hard to play against also makes him hard to play wiht at times, he's unpredictable!

He'd go to the byline, then take on the player in to the box, then go back the half way line, do a one-two with Kuyt then crack off an amazing outside right footed shot from the corner flag! How do you make runs for that... He's a roaming player who should just be allowed to play havoc.

I'm ready to support anyone Kenny Dalglish decides to sign in this transfer window , It could be an exciting one .

I'm with you there, matie. Not bothering my head thinking about who we'll get. I'll just wait for the announcements while i entertain myself with the rumours, in the meantime.

A big thanks to Rafa the man is a true red, he should be given a scouse knighthood. And be welcomed back to the club, in a role similar to what Kenny had on his return. All the best JFT96.

KNEE JERK

Great gestures from the man, but i don't want him back at the club. No thanks.

The Players Liverpool should look into.
Marco Reus around 18 Mil EU Qualiy striker.
I Like Adam Johnson who doesn't but City will 90% not likely send him to Anfield. Maybe 24 Mil Pounds.

Cheaper and quality option--
Farfan for 6 Mil. EU Decent winger upgrade at what we have now.

Quality addition i think would be the Yank Shea few Million to Dallas would get him at Anfield.
Also i hear Huntelaar is possibly moving this Winter.

Hairy Yank YNWA!
Needs for Liverpool are a Winger and Striker. Possibly 2 if offered 65 Mil for Suarez You almost have to take it and bring in Llorente or Soldado and Reus.. Carroll needs to get going sooner the better!

I've been looking online and the rumour doin the rounds on the net is that we're interested in signing darren bent for £20m+. I don't know what everyone else thinks, but in my opinion he is just not good enough for us, surely there are other "fox in the box" strikers around for the same kind of price or for substantially less then what he would cost. I have 100% faith in KK so i for one hope he doesn't sign bent. He has shown he can't do well at a big club hence why Spurs sold him. Don't do it kenny! Go for Podolski or Soldado.

Red P

While i agree with you on Bent, i disagree that Podolski is any better. Just like Bent, Podolski has proven that he can't cut it at big clubs, either.
I see him as another Sean Dundee kind of player. A disaster in waiting. Not convinced about him at all.

Let's be realistic ! We are not going to finish in the top four. Apart from our back 5 gerrard and Suarez we don't have the cutting edge. Downing, Henderson, Adams, shelvey, they are all ok but not on level 1. We need a goal scorer like rushy, we need creaters like Barnes. Our midfield is weak and were missing a goal poucher!

Well if you consider where we were this time last year and where we are now, and within 4 or 5 points of CL spot i think this is a bad post. See what happens from now till May, keep the faith.

for me as a liverpool fan.... no disrespect KD has done some great things for the club... but it's time for liverpool to look to bring in a new manager..... we have drawn 10 times this season... thats not good enghough in the primeir leauge. nor is it good enought for champoins leauge.... we have one of the best atackers in the game of football... how cant we be winning games... the manigemt (spelling) needs to change

Think you was looking for the Chelsea page mate. All the best.

KNEE JERK

You know as much about football as you do about spelling. get to bed, I know it's the holiday's but it's still late.

right i just dont get why we cant splash out 20-30 million euro or pound on a decent player, i mean all the pundits, papers, people sayin the new owners have invested heavily bla bla bla take our spenditure on all our new players from the ones we sold...they spent fek all! and andy carroll is nowhere near gud enuf for any premier league title side or champions league, accept it he should never have been bought, nor adam or even hendo!

29 Dec 2011 22:49:33
Some of the posts are getting a bit carried away, we are heading in the right direction and the clubs history and stature will always assist when trying to sign players.......but get real, we cannot even think about signing Cavani, Hazard, Ozil, etc. We haven't had champions league for a couple of years and its far from guaranteed this year (although I am confident that we can do it !), we have no chance of the league this year and maybe even the next couple.

Lets not start aiming low, but lets get real about who we can and will sign and we wont be disappointed on February the 1st.

Blair,

I'm currently in Lichfield visiting family which is Villa country. The talk here is that it is very much a possibility. Personally don't rate him that highly.

Dirks Engine Room
--------------------------------------------------
I like Darren Bent, Dirks mate. But I wouldn't pay no more than 12-15 mill, for him. The prices being quoted range from 20-25 mill, which is ridiculous, for someone his age. But he's English and it's the January window, so we can expect inflated prices. I would like him but Villa will probably be looking no less than 20 mill, for him.

I watched McLeish's press conference last week, when asked about selling Bent he said "No one could afford him, in January" IF we could get him for 10-12 mill mate, it's a no brainer for me. Theres not many 'Fox in the box' strikers better than him in the PL. Hernandez is better but apart from him, I can't think of anyone, can you mate?

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Agree on what he's worth Blair, but i've heard Villa would take £18- mill for Bent. And maybe an option of a fringe player going to Villa on loan. All the best.

KNEE JERK

Bents good but would only be a short term investment. Im not sure our owners would be interested, even though he is a proven striker, but you never know..?
Tel 1949

Thanks Knee Jerk, 18 mill is still to much. 12 mill and Wilson or Sterling or both on loan. Would be a good deal for both clubs, imo mate.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96 {Ed002's Note - You cannot give two players on loan to the same club anymore Blair.}

We paid up to 20 mill for Downing, Tel mate and his 27, same age as Bent. We desperately need a player like Bent, if the price is right, like you say mate you never know?

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Why not Ed?

Thanks

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96 {Ed001's Note - Prem rules Blair.}

Bent is tripe!

Front page headline in The Guardian tomorow reads ' Thatcher's ministers wanted to abandon Liverpool' Disgraceful

RED87

Hardly new news! She wanted to abandon everyone!

I no this sounds wrong but I have champagne on ice for when that evil cow decides to reshuffle hell.

Dont Buy The Sun

She will out live us all mate, sure she made some sort of deal with satin. All the best.

KNEE JERK

The guy who actually told her this was a stupid idea and shouldn't be done, was Michael Heseltine. The Thatcher bit didn't supprise me but the Heseltine bit did. I thought this guy only gave a f*ck about himself and southern England.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Stuff the poll tax

I do like the thought of her deal with satin. Plain white or pink inlaid panels? Difficult one I know...
Don't Buy The Sun - I'm with you on the Champaigne, just waiting for the day she goes.

Been taking a look at Luuk De Jong on YT.The vid entitled "Luuk De Jong|2001/2012|The next Van Persie?".
I have to say im impressed,I know its YT & everyone looks a world beater on there,but his movement & coolness infront of goal seems streets ahead of most of our strikers.
He's not the quickest,but so what,many wonderful EPL strikers over the years were not blessed with blistering pace (Fowler,Cantona,Bergkamp etc) its quickness of thought that we need in our box at the moment.
Im encouraged that if we get him,he could prove a shrewd bit of business.

Rob Paisley

Quickness of thought process is much better quality to have than quickness of pace. The last thing we need is a striker who runs faster than he can think. Ugh!

I would like to see 3 signings made next month:

LW/ST-Andriy Yarmolenko £12m
RW/ST-Luuk De Jong £12
CDM-Berim Kayal £6m

These 3 would give us the cover we so desperateley need, & numerous options once we get Luis,Lucas & Stevie back full time.

29 Dec 2011 21:46:59
I think we all have to accept that unless we get CL qualification we will not attract 90% of top class players so therefore it's looking for up and coming talent in my opinion or in the case of a striker a provel goal scorer that might not excactly be a Villa or Messi but knows where the back of the net is. I've always seen Suarez as a provider and if we had an Owen or Fowler we would be challenging for the league. It's a curate's egg - do we spend a lot of money know in the hope of CL qualification or keep what we've got and hope and then invest. In my opinion we need to invest now as CL qualification will help pay the investment back. Then we can get one or two more quality players in the summer. Failure may well result in top players leaving and we know who they are and will set us back a while.

I'd have a punt on Hoilett from Blackburn, try to get Salgado from Valencia but Bent may well be an easier if expensive option. I've never seen Luuk De Jong but he isn't a proven Premiership player and I think at this point we need someone who can finish and Bent does have that ability or Jemaine Defoe so they would be my choices.

Doesn't Salgado play for Blackburn?

Just wanted to ask is there any truth in the rumour that Torres is to return to Liverpool? As my girlfriend's sister's Aunty's second cousin, first removed has said that she'd recently spoke to her brothers uncles midwife, who has spotted Fernando Torres doing keepy uppies outside Anfield in a full Liverpool strip, singing YNWA in Spanish. Is this just another vicious rumour or is it worth tuning into Sky Sports news for the next few days? Many thanks in advance

I know your brothers uncles midwifes cat and believe me the story is true

im sick of people posting about luuk de jong, look at earlier posts .

ed, do you honestly think we will buy a top class striker this january, possibly between 15-30 million. if we do it shows the board to not trust in carroll 100%

REDUBLINER {Ed002's Note - I cannot guess at what will be spent. Surely the player is more important than the money?}

Steven Fletcher (Wolves) would walk to Liverpool if he thought it would get him a move there, His family still live there, he and his late farther Kenny were season ticket holders at Anfield. We could do and have done a lot worse.

Eds,
is it true we had deals in place to sign Aguero, Silva and someone else before Hicks and Gillet pulled the plug on it?

we'd have been an insane team if so.

thanks {Ed002's Note - Not Aguero. But Silva and Villa perhaps.}

How could we have been insane team when we had a manager who was insane on playing defensive footy?
With the kind of footy we are playing now, yes, bot players would have been fantastic for us.

hi ed's, with Suarez out for 8 games do you think we'll move early in the transfer market or do you think it will pan out for most of Jan? I know there's numerous factors involved but i think if we leave it too long, champions league is out of the question. {Ed002's Note - There is no way to tell.}

Is this correct from the Daily Mail; Liverpool can appeal against the suspension Suarez received following the Evra case once the independent QC, Paul Goulding, makes the reasons known for why he was found guilty. If this is corrects the FA dosn,t know the reasons for the panels verdict.........Bobbinred

{Ed002's Note - No, you misunderstand. They can only appeal once the report has been provided to the club and for 14 days thereafter.}

Yes Ed I understand that but the Mails article implies that the panel has given the FA the verdict but as yet has not given the reasons for the verdict......Bobbinred {Ed001's Note - the Mail is not a paper a Liverpool fan should be reading, it is full of lies and pays Kelvin McKenzie's wages. Just ignore it as a piece of filth, because that is all it is.}

OK ed, I just thought this was the reason for the delay. I feel sorry for Surez and the LFC as this has been hanging about for 3 months now....Bobbinred {Ed001's Note - we just have to wait for the report to be composed and typed up basically. Then it will be sent out to the relevant parties, once we have examined it, we will then know what grounds we have for an appeal.}

Thanks as always

Ed002 - just a thought I had been mulling over.
I like to see your responses but sometimes you seem just a tad tetchy. I can understand that you get
irritated about being asked the same questions over
and over but not everyone goes through the posts every day. Why not just 'post' but not 'answer' the
posts which get up your nose.
I will know how you regard this by the type (if any)
of response I get

Puzzled {Ed002's Note - We are now deleting all duplicate posts and will continue to do so. You don't see a lot of the posts in any case.}

Thanks

Hi everyone hope all is well!

My 2pence for the first half this season...

4th place - is realistic! we're competing well which is good to see. I always think about the match away at West Ham last season towards the end of Roy's reign.. it was one of the poorest performances ever. To see us now, slick passing, innovation, pass and move, i think the players have done us proud. The goals obviously aren't there, but that is solvable and i have 100% faith Kenny and Co will address it which is wicked... not like last year when the whole team was all over the place. So hopefully 2012 will be a good year for us troops ! :-)!

ANYWAY i have a random favor to ask from anyone who can give some input... basically i'm spending this weekend in liverpool. didnt have time to book things properly and i really want to goto the game tomorrow! I checked the website, and its sold out, theres some ridiculous quotes online bopping about like 150-200 per ticker... i was wondering what are the chances of being able to purchase 2 outside the ground? If i just arrive at anfield in good time, will i be able to get some tickets without being majorly ripped off??

Finally... very off topic.... but i'm planning on popping the question to the mrs on sat night... anyone know romantic places to eat near the dock ...or any romantic locations looking out over the dock?.....ahhh romance *cough*.. back to football!!

Wish me luck anyhow!

Tiz ynwa =D

If you go to Anfield Tiz and try to buy tickets, you will be majorly ripped off mate. You will be charged more outside the ground, than online. The ticket touts know this is your last oppotunity to see the game, so will be looking to cash in on your desperation, for tickets.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

29 Dec 2011 21:50:13
I've bought tickets from

www.footballclubtickets.bz/

before who were very reliable and delivered to my hotel but were really expensive. There are always people outside
the ground selling tickets but they may not be cheap tomorrow either.

Romantic place by the docks for the proposal, I'd go for in front of the iconic Liver-building. The albert dock is amazing but a bit commercialized. For the ultimate romantic experience, why not propose directly at Anfield just before kick-off? Why not try a line like,
my love, in this place Dalglish and Rush were a marriage made in heaven and thats what I'd love for us too'. Then you open the box with the ring with 5 small diamonds representing our 5 European cups mounted on an 18 carat gold band, one carat for each league championship we won - your sure on for a winner there mate.

For eating out, try the London carrage works on hope street, it is quite simply the best restaurant I've been to in the world. Nice Hotel also by they way. Good luck.
RedAce.

Nice one pal..believe me the idea of doing that has crossed my mind! thanks for all the advice. I'll check out the website and who knows fingers crossed!...i should've knownnn to have planned this earlier.. DOH!

Tiz ynwa =D

Lol that match at West Ham we lost 3-1 was under KENNY actually.
Kennys new signing suarez was playin.
Match wiv roy at home we won 3-0
BUT i knw which manager i'll take.

29 Dec 2011 19:20:18
Hiya Eds, is there still any chance of Adam Johnson? Last time he was talked about he hadn't signed his new contract, does this affect his situation at all? He recently said he was unfairly dropped and clearly still has issues with not starting enough. He would improve us massively, not only would Carroll benefit but the whole team would play better, faster, more creative attacking football, not to mention the goals he gets! Also, is there a chance of Steven Fletcher? He would be perfect (and cheap) and would solve our goalscoring problems, especially if we got Johnson as well ha.

Awesome site! {Ed002's Note - Read the posts.}

Whether he has or hasn't signed a new contract at City is completely immaterial, firstly he would want to play for us, secondly would City sell to us......if City get a winger in this window....I believe they would do business at 15-18million max. I think this would be based on the Adam looking for a move to enhance his chances of being on a flight to Poland/Ukraine in the summer. Adam Johnson would be almost assured of a position in LFC team, also his location at present is only half hr from Liverpool......if available it would make perfect sense to go after him......

I don't believe that Kenny has given up on signing Adam Johnson this winter despite the player having signed a contract extension. I believe we'll still kop him in jan.

Hi Eds,

Could you please explain if anything further has happened regarding Suarez. I know the club was waiting on the report for the ruling of his 8 game ban before deciding whether to appeal his ban but have they received it and/or decided.

Also with regards to transfers I'm happy with just waiting and seeing what we get. If we can nick a top played like we did last year then that would be great if we get some one like bent I will still be relatively happy - an established English international that is proven to score goals wherever he goes and should be able to finish off the chances we've been creating.

By next year, Carroll and Suarez should be firing in the goals and this third striker will be vying for his position in the team.

Cheers as always,

J {Ed002's Note - I don't know if the club's lawyers have the report or not yet. It is certainly expected that they will appeal the punishment. If a "top" player is to come in then you need to expect a significant departure as well. I would not hold your breath.}

29 Dec 2011 19:05:32
hi ed, are liverpool interested in getting any more uraguayan players? {Ed002's Note - There remain the rumours about a couple.}

Didn't we sign a deal with the Uruguayan club Nacional about bringing in players which excel there? Or something along those lines.

29 Dec 2011 18:55:34
players that Liverpool could possibly sign in January:

1) Huntelaar
2) Soldado
3) Strootman
4) A. Johnson
5) Martinez

Not keen on huntelaar isnt consistent enough.

ACHILLES.

Which part of the following isn't consistent enough for you with regards Huntelaar ... or am I missing the joke? :

Ajax - 72 in 96
Madrid - 8 in 20
Milan - 7 in 25
Schalke - 23 in 40
Holland - 30 in 48

-Shane.

Huntelaar could be a good signing as his style of football would blend nicely with the way Liverpool have played under Dalglish.

He wouldnt get that many in the EPL its to physical game for him i think hed b a waste of money with no re-sale value!
If he was good enough man u would off bought him when they showed interest a few years ago.

ACHILLES.

Oh, can you just give us all a break with this claptrap myth of EPL being "too physical"? In the EPL they play FOOTBALL not RUGBY.
The last time i checked, many holland players are doing fine in the premier league.

29 Dec 2011 18:53:08
Not sure exactly but I think it's like 170 goals in 380 games. Don't get me wrong I like the exciting exotic strikers but bent is not a bad option at a goal every 2 games personally I would love to see de Jong at lfc but Bent is not a bad player to settle for.

29 Dec 2011 18:48:25
Darren Bent is a good striker, but does Bent's style of play suit what Liverpool require at the moment and would he fit well into Liverpool's style of play. There is risk involved in signing such a player and could hinder progress particarily in front of goal where at present Liverpool are struggling at the moment.
There are other players out there that could be better for Liverpool. Jan Claas Huntelaar looks like a player that could fit well into the current style of football Liverpool are playing under Dalglish. Despite an unimpressive showing at AC Milan and Real Madrid, he is playing well at Shalke and has been a proven goalscorer at Ajax. Huntelaar has also played successfully alongside Luis Suarez at Ajax.

That is all well and good, but will schalke sell? That is the question.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE LIVERPOOL PUT IN BIDS THIS JANUARY FOR :-
1.kevin strootman
2.lucas podolski
3.georginio wijnaldum
4.javi martinez

ACHILLES.

Will never happen though lol {Ed002's Note - I would say that three of teh four are possible.}

I think kevin strootman would be a great signing

Sell adam i dont like him and replace him with javi martinez but i know the king wouldnt do that to a fellow scot.

Javi would be way too expensive to buy. He's one of those overpriced spanish players(40M!) who might or might not make it in the epl.

Why dont lfc recall DANIEL PACHECO why luis suarez is out for 9 matches when i watched him for lfc reserves and he has that creative flair that suarez has abviously not as good bt he has it!! And in front of goal he cant b any worse than what we have already lol

Really i just thought he was out on loan

Hi eds and people it was quite interesting listening to Guillem Balague on lfc tv the other day and his opinion was that we need a player that can play inbetween the lines. In the summer would it be fair to say that we had an interest in yossi. So my question is are we in the jan transfer market for that sort of player?

Mighty reds {Ed002's Note - I don't recall Liverpool interest in Benayoun.}

I agree we need a link up player, someone like Ozil,Kagawa,Ericsson not saying we will get them but were missing a link or 2.

Love to see Kaka . £22m he is here.

We had a perfect chance to sign Diego Ribas of Wolfsburg who was very available at a very reasonable price and really wanted to come to us.
Right now, i can't see a better player for that role out there, at the moment. Unfortunately, he is now tied up with a loan contract to Atletico till summer. Kenny was defo slow on that move.

BooDaBooze {Ed002's Note - To be fair to Dalglish Diego comes with massive baggage - thrown out of Juventus after a year (Juve taking a £10M loss on the transfer) and who walked out on Wolfsburg three times last year and been find £400k. Having a player like that has the club has the potential to be very disruptive to the team.}

Kaka ain't worth 22M no more. Waste of precious millions.

Hi

I have been posting comments on and off for a few months now under the name RedKev. I have just realised someone else has also been using the name and used the name before me.

My apologies there was no deliberate attempt to mislead people. I will now use the name 'Crazy Horse' as a tribute to Emlyn Hughes and Neil Young

Sorry

Cheers Redkev, I mean Crazy Horse, my bad. lol

Some of the talk about players we may get is nothing short of children dreams! If the likes of Hazard turn up at LFC i will be so amazed i'd faint! We all saw the players we got last time around and while there was speculation we would be getting some of the best players in the world, we didn't! Probably because we are not one of the best teams in the world right now.
I actually think we got some really good players last transfer window (with exception of henderson) but we are still 2-3 years away from winning the title in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong i love LFC but its silly to think half these world class players would want to come to us at this moment in time.
I think the players we did buy will start to gel much more in the second half of this season and we have a fair chance of gaining CLF, but i do not see LFC finishing ahead of the two Manchester's of Totters (who are brilliant at the moment).

Also, while i do not think Bent is world class people should look at his stats before suggesting he is not worth 10 million! This season has not been great for him but he's consistantly up there each year with two or three of the top goal scorers every year!

I know this is no rumour but please post as i am sure there are other people out there that love this great club but realize it will take time and hard work to be truly great again

Happy new year to all!

Dear Santa,

Please can you make sure Kenny blows his summer budget in January on 2 Strikers & a creative Midfielder?
I've been a good boy this year..promise!
Maybe a Winger who can cross a ball if any money is left over.
Please Santa, Pleaseeeee.....oh wait it's the 29th ughhh.....too late!
Guess we'll be buying Heskey then, ughhhh!
Seriously though, we need 2 Strikers not one.
No more Wingers cum Strikers Kenny please!
Need some natural goal scorers asap!

Hi eds,
A quick question,
When a player is transferred between clubs, is there a portion of the fee that goes to the FA?
Are clubs supposed to pay the FA for any transfer?
Does this applies to bosmans and loans too?
Thanks ed,
Samsaliva from Malaysia {Ed002's Note - None of the transfer fee goes to the FA.}

Interesting piece in the Daily Mail today talking about the youth academies and some emphasis on the NextGen Series. It quotes Raheem Sterling as the next Theo Walcott with Sporting Lisbon's Diogo Matos (academy director) saying that he would get in any team. I hope this lad is really looked after and makes it through to the first team and doesn't become another Dani Pacheco.

ED, Whats the story on the stadium? I expected there to be some kind of news or update...any help? -McMenemy {Ed001's Note - just waiting on an announcement, not sure why it has been held up, lots of talk it is just waiting on the Suarez ban to be resolved. Not sure why that would affect it, I guess so the publicity wouldn't be overshadowed.}

An ideas what the announcement could be a new build or what?? tanx {Ed002's Note - With a feeling of deja vu, we don't know but putting aside a ground share with Everton, there are five options as I see it: (1) New build to an existing “approved” design commissioned by the previous owners. This has the benefit of being the quickest and most economic way forward as far as a new build goes and I recall the fans being impressed with the designs. (2) New build to the design of an existing stadium (e.g. the Allianz Arena). This would save considerably on architects fees but may prove problematic in other areas – but may be more viable than folks realise. (3) New build to a completely new design. It will cost considerably more and take much longer to go down this route. This has to be a high-risk option. (4) Redevelopment of Anfield to add 12-15k seats that FSG would like to see. Economically this would seem to be the option that would give the best return on investment, but this is the option that is hampered by local planning regulations. My feeling is that this is seemingly the option that most fans would prefer. (5) A phased improvement and redevelopment of Anfield to bring the stadium up to code and to perhaps add some additional seating. This would provide a medium term solution that only moves the real issue to the right, but it would possibly facilitate the inclusion of the full quota of additional seating at a later date. My assumption was always that any naming right deal would be for a new build and not for a redeveloped Anfield. I don't know if anything has changed in respect of that. I also don't know if FSG are actively trying to find a way to overcome planning regulation restrictions that would allow them to eventually add the additional seating at Anfield that they desire. Building a new stadium is going to mean a very large loan being taken on and even though sponsorship will cover much of the cost year on year, it can possibly be seen as an albatross that FSG may not want hanging around their neck. My own view at this time is that the club will look at a phased improvement of Anfield hoping that a way can be found to add the additional seating in the not too distant future. Some effort with teh search function will find lots of discussion on the subject and a couple of pretty well informed responses to the above.}

Darren Bent for me would be a sensible move,
We are in desperate need of a goal scorer!

I would love to see Darren Bent (England's best striker) at our club. I am also desperate to see Adam Johnson arrive (I realise this is unlikely). My question to the Eds is, is there a player that city are keen on that would make them more likely to release Johnson and if so what is the likelihood of them getting said player?

Chris in Tamworth {Ed002's Note - A little convaluted Chris, but: Manchester City want Tevez player off the books completely as soon as is possible. Kia Joorabchian was given an open brief to approach other clubs and the prime target was seen as Real Madrid who had a long-term interest in the player and was always the favoured destination of Tevez. Attempts were made to broker a meeting between Joorabchian and Miguel Pardeza but it never happen. There was no way that Real Madrid were in a position to pay the £40M Manchester City wanted for Tevez so a trade was the next best option and Manchester City were open to this. Khedira plus cash would likely be offered up and I don't think he would have been of any interest to Manchester City. City were expected to ask for Di Maria in a straight exchange. So as we stand right now, I don't see Manchester City finding a player they want in January - therefore an immediate move seems unlikely. As an aside and going back a few years to an interview he gave when leaving Boca, Tevez had made it clear that his two targets were to play for Real Madrid and to retire at 28 to pursue a life as part of a religious order.}

Sorry about that, cheers Ed

Chris in Tamworth {Ed002's Note - No problem Chris. At least it means no one will ever need to ask about Johnson again.}

Yeah right! Expect an average of about 10 a day over the next 4 weeks from all those who seem to only have the ability to read their own posts

Chris in Tamworth

A religious order? What, like a shaolin monk or something??

Cuchulainn's Hounds {Ed002's Note - Perhaps he could have followed me to Father Yod (Ya Ho Wha) and the Source family back in the day. But perhaps something Catholic is more likely}

So Ed002 you're saying he'd more likely swap the vast scenic landscape of Hollywood Hills for a white collar job on Craggy Island? The source family are just a wee tad before my time, I get that hippie commune brady bunch feel. And this Yod guy was killed in a hang gliding accident in Hawaii? I'm Bizarrely fascinated. Isis Aquarius? Echoes of a Crone? I still think tevez might just find his niche in life yet...

Cuchulainn's Hounds {Ed002's Note - I remember the restaurant really well. It closed right after the summer I spent down in LA in 1974 and eventually everyone moved to Hawaii where Father Yod did indeed prang the kite. But Tevez was really keen on the whole priesthood/church deal.}

As it's coming up to silly season again, i.e. the transfer window, I was just thinking outside the box. Could people tell me who, if we get CL, from our starting XI would be good enough to get us a good run in the competition. Would genuinely like to know people's opinions. For me it would be:

Reina
Johnson
Agger
Skrtel
Enrique
Gerrard
Suarez
Maxi?
Bellamy?

Cheers for your input

LJ

No one

If a team is good enought o qualify for the competition from in my opinion the most competitive league in Europe, then I'd say they are good enough for a decent run.
You missed (at least)
Kelly, Carragher, Aurelio(when fit), Henderson, Adam, Lucas,Spearing Carroll and Kuyt.
Why do people undersestimate our players so much? We have quality, but the team isn't balanced enough, meaning we're missing a; cretaive playmaker; a young, clinical and pacey striker; and a fast right winger. You still need the grafters and the solid players, we're just missing the falir to play around them.

Berbatov would look average without Nani, Young, Anderson, Cleverly and Rooney creating things for him. Its a team game and balance is key.

YNWA! (Adam)

This is why I asked the question. The players you mentioned apart from Lucas, first XI, are, IMO, very good SQUAD players. I still feel, IMO, that our first XI is still lacking players that can change a game for us with a bit of flair and composure. I believe our squad is strong, but our first XI just lacks that little bit of individual talent that can turn games for us.

LJ

IMO

CARRA
SPEARING
AURELIO
KUYT
HENDERSON

are not good enough for champions league, although i love carra, id like to see him go into coaching. the others do not have the challenge factor. Henderson still has stuff to prove but has definately played better of late.
Adams been a dissapointment aswell as downing

LTP

Carra not good enough fo cl ,bet you didnt say that when his hard work helped us win it

Richard Buxton is a journo who writes on all things LFC on Click Liverpool a general news site for the city. Dont know if its the same guy you're following but you can follow him on twitter. Just looked at the site and he says we made an enquiry about Bent. He does have good contacts at the club and has been the first to break news before, but if you make enough predictions you're gonna be right sooner or later. Cheers Bri.

Hi all, and Ed's

I cannot believe that most people would not like D Bent to sign, when it is very obvious that we need goals. Luuk De Jong might be cheaper, and so would many others, but they may not work out.

We all know that Bent is a proven goal scorer, and he's never been at a high profile club, with quality service. He is just the sort of player we need, quality finisher, doesn't get injured that much, Villa may be looking to sell him. ( Dont say he didn't work at Spurs, because they we still a mid-table team when he played for them)

I for one we be over the moon with him, if he were to sign, even though it seem very unlikely, as the Ed's say no contact has been made by LFC.

Fingers crossed a quality finisher will come in this January, not only to score, but hopefully he can take pressure of Carroll to score a hat-trick every game.

Thanks Ed's

Burnsy

He HAS been in a quality club - named Tottenham. Didn't really cut it. I am not convinced he s cutting it for Villa either, since he suffered a dip in form just before his injury.
For me he doesn't represent value for money.

Need to research more, spurs are a high profile club & had better quality of service whilst their! Some are suggesting that arsenal could land darren bent? If so he wouldnt bother thinking about joining liverpool??

It wud b gud 2 sign Bent as he is gud and english But if you think about his age and the Price 20m is too much. 18m and Underwud b ok i wud pay 17m MAX.
BUT it wud b gud if we can sign DEFOE or HOOPER instead as options.
BOTH are ENGLISH gud Poachers and wud b great if Under 9m.
Defoe is Better but Hooper younger.
Im not which 1 wud b the better option.
My preferred signings based on hu we hav been linked to and realistically.
1.Gaston Ramirez.
2. Luuk De Jong
3. Defoe/Hooper

29 Dec 2011 14:48:21
Liverpool have made an enquiry for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

The 27-year-old will be sacrificed by Villa boss Alex McLeish as he attempts to bolster the mid-table side's transfer kitty during the upcoming window.

Speculation over Bent's future has began to mount after injury sidelined him for Villa's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool earlier this month yet was photographed shopping in Cambridge on the same day.

His fire power and link-up play with England team mate Stewart Downing, who left Villa last summer, is understood to be the key motivation for Liverpool's Champions League charge.

Kenny Dalglish has been mulling over a move for the well-travelled hit man in light of the club's lack of clinical edge in front of goal, which has resulted in six home draws.

Luis Suarez's goal tally has stalled while Andy Carroll continues to shoulder the burden of the excessive £35million price tag which lured him to Anfield just 11 months prior.

Monday's stalemate with bottom club Blackburn Rovers has prompted Liverpool to signal their intent for Bent, who appears set to leave Villa Park almost a year since his arrival.

In spite of McLeish's doubt that 'anybody' could afford the club's record signing, the former Sunderland man will be allowed to leave for significantly less than his £24million valuation.

But Liverpool face competition from both Fulham and newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers.

Damien Comolli, the Reds' director of football, admitted last January that the club had considered a move for Bent prior to his move to Villa but claimed that his "lone wolf" approach to games would have proved incompatible with striker Fernando Torres, who later joined Chelsea.

If the competition for Bent is only from Fulham and QPR then I would humbly suggest that he is not as highly thoght of by big clubs as he is by posters on here. We don't want him. RED LENIN

We could argue the case with many successful players who have not been targeted during transfer windows. Just because a certain high profile club is not interested in a player does not make them a bad player.

DaveyBootle

Our only competition for Suarez was Zenit St Petersburg and Shakhtar. Competition and popular opinion of a player does not dictate their ability. Saying that, I'd much rather we spend the £20m+ required for Bent on someone better.

Martin

29 Dec 2011 14:40:15
Hi Ed, just a quickie, but all this talk about Ramirez, De Jong, Lucas, Podolski etc, it just doesn't seem like value for money? There are goalscorers in our lower leagues, who I think, are worth a gamble? Why on earth pay over inflated prices for players who have never played in this country? I'd love to see KK give Billy Sharpe or Matty Fryatt or Luciano Becchio or Gary Hooper or Matty Tubbs a go. No more than £3 Million for any of them. If it doesn't work? Rather lose 3 than 15-20 million.

I agree with you mate, it doesn't matter what quality league you play in, because if you know where the goal is, then nothing else matters.

It's the sort of thing most people do on FM and Fifa, but rarely in real life.

Boys your not getting champions league the top three are sown up by the two mancs and spuds. That leaves us and chelsea fighting for fourth with the loser in fifth. That leaves you sixth at best. O well always next yeah eh lads?

So Arsenal are out of it then?

Dear Dellusional Arsenal fan, there are still 20 games left in the season and we are 2 points behind you. Just wait 'till big Van Persie gets his annual injury or you might see him exit
in the January transfer window, seeing as he is still 'thinking' about signing a new contract.

Good luck in 6th place mate.

Renegadered

Nice post Renegadered, i hope Van persie gets injured then lets see how good they are without him, they rely on him far too much just like we did with torres and gerrard. Im convinced we will get 3rd, spurs will no doubt drop off when they start to pick up injures, minus adebayor they dont have a striker as pav will be off in jan.

BigD

BigD

Yea it wont be long at all till he is injured. And as soon as a big club come in for him, he will be gone. :-) enjoy it while it lasts.
Gaz b

Dream on, If Persie gets injured we have Theo, Gervinho, Chamakh and Park in that order. Remember all can play the striker role. We have Afobe etc in the reserves and "new signings" Mr Wilshere, Mr. Gibbs and Mr Diaby to freshen the squad. Roy Miyaichi and Alex OC are waiting to take the wing positions. van Persie has been fortunate to be a recipient of assists from Theo, Gervinho and the midfielders. Whoever takes up his role when injured will receive the same number of assists and continue to bang then in. Remember your home games are worth a maximum of a point and you are not guaranteed 3 points away! Dream on, lets chat in May. I like yoy Liverpool fans, you leave in dreamland- i mean how can you think you will sign Cavani or Higuain?

Poolgunner

Dear Mr. Poolgunner, you might have people who can play the striker role, but they don't have the prolific rate of your star man. Van Persie has scored more than HALF of your goals this season in all games. Now if you had the knowledge to actually look through the page, you'd see that 12 year olds are posting wish lists like 'Higuan or Cavani'. Not guranteed 3 points away? How many did we get when we went to the so called 'invincible Emirates Stadium' where NASRI was even playing? Eh?

Come back in May when your behind Chelsea in the 6th place spot.

RenegadeRed

Eh, Nasri's mind was already at City and even Blackburn beat us then, infact any team of horses could have beaten us then i admit.

Would love to see Liverpool sign Honda in the jan window. We clearly lack a wee bit of creativity in front of goal. Brilliant player who can make things happen!

Totally agree m8, but if the eds are correct than at £20m euros i fink it is a bit much, however around £10-£13m is reasonable and id go for him {Ed002's Note - Liverpool were very interested at one time but may have blown their chance of Honda last January when he was available for about £8M. During the mid-season in Russia, Wolfsburg and Juventus were interested in Honda but the player said he wanted to move to Spain and the 25M euro asking price put them off. Recent enquiries for the player have been from PSG, Sevilla and Palermo but given the player has been out injured much of the time since September and I am not so sure he will be moving this winter, particularly given CSKA may need him in the spring, and when he does move I would guess at PSG being an option or perhaps the Iberian peninsula. Thoughts about a move to Arsenal come up occasionally as well.}

Why dont we then?

29 Dec 2011 13:58:32
Just a thought guys, why not go for Michael Owen? He may have lost that pace but he's a proven goal scorer and will not waste the amount of chances we create.

Not in a million years.

RenegadeRed

Would rather miss all the chances than have him putting them in. He barely even plays anymore anyway. Having him "solve" our finishing problem would be akin to relying totally on Aurelio to be fit as our 1st choice left back.

hii guys...i dont know whether this is talked b4 on not...but i have a point to make..

since kenny has taken over ...maxi has performed really good..scouring a good amount of goals...n i think his runs n knowledge abt space is really good.....compared to hendo,kyut,n downing ..has more confidence to go for the goal .(by which i mean doesn't west a good opportunity or position ..like few or say many of our players . ) but y the F... kenny doesnt shows faith in him to give him more starts ..i think at this moment with this squad ..maxi should be a regular starter...i know he is not what we really need or say that much classy but...say if he is in a good run....y shouldn't we play him more.

Kenny Dalglish mentions during his praise of Maxi Rodriguez on the LFC website that 'Maxi is not able to play every game and needs to be managed accordingly' .

Qwerty

I actually believe if Maxi was capable of playing every game at 100%, Kenny would put him in. Kenny is quoted on the website today talking about Maxi:

"He's not able to play in every game and we have to manage him as best we can. But when he does play he doesn't give you many bad performances. He's a real credit to himself and his profession."

I think Kenny must be protecting him either from an existing medical issue flarring up or preventing fatigue setting in, in order to keep him fit / sharp so that when he does get the opportunities to play he is tip top and invariably scores.

Which Windows are you using? If it's XP Pro, part of your DVD problem might be to do with a thing called CODEC. You need to install a programme (available on internet free) called K-Lite CODEC. Is your DVD drive actually part of the PC - ie it came with it as integral? If not, then you may need to install/re-install the DVD driver programme (downlaodable from the manufacturer's site) followed by a DVD burning programme - one such as Nero i you have it, or a decent freeware one if you haven't - such as imgburn (just google the word). If that doesn't sort it, take it to a small one-man-band PC shop (not PC World - they are dink). RED LENIN

Thx redlenin,its not in my pc,its a freeview box with builtin dvd recorder,it use to work fine,i could format a dvd rw disc and keep it running overnight and reformat it for use again,but now wont format discs,it will play dvds but not rw ones,ive spoken to lg,

and they say use a compatible disc which i did but still the same,im trying to shame them on twitter to see if they will send me a new one,

Hi ed002 how are you? I was wondering why Liverpool don't make any money from shirt sales and is it only Liverpool that don't make money? and also if this will change when we move to warrior? Sorry of its complicated!

Square tomato {Ed002's Note - It is not complicated at all and it is true for most clubs. The money from shirt sales goes to the manufacturer, the distributor and the retailer, who can make extra adding numbers and names to the shirts. If Liverpool are the retailer (club shop, club website etc.) then they get the retailers cut. The manufacturer (Adidas, Warrior etc.) pay the club an amount each year which allows them to manufacture and sell the shirts using the correct logos etc.. That is how they justify the money given to the club. So if you walk in to a high street store and buy a Liverpool shirt - nothing goes to the club. There are a few clubs that have negotiated different deals with manufacturers (Real Madrid with Adidas and Barcelona with Nike are the two obvious examples) based upon joint reselling ventures. So the income from shirts is fixed to the £12M or whatever Adidas pay Liverpool plus a small amount for reselling through the club retail outlets (shop, web) and as of next season it will be the £25M or whatever Warrior give plus a small amount for reselling through the club retail outlets (shop, web).}

Thanks ed really appreciate that

Square tomato

Over the period of he contract, how often are the deals renegotiated either with the existing manufacturers or new manufacturers?

Could there not be terms in the contract that stipulate if a certain amount of shirt sales are achieved the annual fee increases to x amount?

If a club suddenly doubles its shirt sales or in Man City's case probably quadoupled since 2008 you would have thought that they could easily negotiate a deal for a higher annual fee. So indirectly if you have a massive increase in shirt sales you could potential negotiate a higher annual fee if the terms of the current deal permit it.

Liverpool have signed a near record deal with Warrior, I havn't looked at the contract but I suspect given the already high annual payments to the club and the stagnated numbers of LFC shirt sales since 2010, there will be little room to negotiate an increase in the fee or perhaps no clause whatsoever that provides the option. {Ed002's Note - The contracts could be renegotiated if the provisions of the contract allow. I cannot think of any example of this happening. Warrior are out on a limb with the Liverpool deal and are hoping on growth in the Far East but well aware that the Chinese market is pretty much nailed by Manchester United and there are significant "fake" goods markets in the region.}

I do find it amazing football clubs don't make money on selling shirts. It seems like
selling Levi jeans and Levi not getting any money for it. Do you think Mick Jagger would stand by and not get any money for sales of official Rolling Stones tee-shirts? Surely the only think to do is make the LFC badge a registered trade mark. At the moment is it true that football shirts are being made by kids in the far east sweat-shops and then sold at a huge profit?

{Ed002's Note - Levi manufacture the jeans and get paid for it. Liverpool don't manufacture shirts - Adidas do. The LFC badge is a registered trade mark and Adidas pay Liverpool £12M a year to allow them to manufacture and sell the shirts.}

Eds - why do the Chinese support
Man United? {Ed002's Note - Because of the success they have had over recent years - or all of living memory as far as their media and sports coverage is concerned. If Lincoln City had one as manay titles as Manchester United in recent years they would all support Lincoln. I spent several months living in Hong Kong back in 1990 and you would see a real mix there but my 9 months of hell living in Beijing in 2005 it was a pretty fanatical 95% supporting Manchester United.}

Since China has the worlds largest population at 1.3 billion, maybe explains why man-united is one of the world most supported clubs?

Liverpool have a lot of supporters in India I would estimate a lot more than UTD during my time there

Kolkata had many Liverpool supporters, real madrid, and barcleona then UTD.

Hi eds am I right in thinking Lucas was originally an attacking midfielder and if so do you think there is a chance of kenny pushing him up if we get a new dm. Next season of course with the injury. Personally I think he would be good there as he is usually our most accurate passer of the ball. The only problem with that would be finding a permanent dm as good as Lucas. {Ed002's Note - He was certailnly more attacking when he first moved to the club, but I rather doubt Dalglish would want to change his position given that he has been playing very well.}

It was very clumsy from benitez that he changed his position because he could have became an excellent attacking midfielder.When he was in brazil I think he scored something other 20 goals a season and won the golden boot or whatever they call it. anyway he is a very good defensive mid now hopefully that injure doesn't affect him long term.

Danny

Clumsy? what are you on about mate? masterstroke more like it.

Sven Bender (Dortmund) is quite similar to Lucas. dont know if he can do the same in the BPL though.

Kaizer

Danny, Lucas Leiva has never scored more than 5 goals in a season. Even whilst in Brazil not 20? You pool fans get more and more funny its unreal.

Ed, what do you think our chances are against Newcastle? What's everyones predictions? :D {Ed002's Note - A comfortable win for Liverpool. 4-1 but the third goal is just a touch offside.}

4-0 to Liverpool. One on the crossbar and the other three to the posts.

Are you still in journalism Ed002? And if so is it as a sports journo? (I'm hoping the answer is no to the second part of my question considering the slating I have given to sports journos in the past!)

Sorry Ed002 it's remiss of me to try and sneak it out of you like that, obviously I know you're still doing the rodeo work and the exploring at the weekends, I just wondered how you paid the bills (I'm assuming that even being a gigolo doesn't pay for the extravagant lifestyle you lead?

Ed002,

Im just curious how did you end up involved in football? Being a former resident of the states I wouldnt have thought it easy to become involved in european football since its behind every other sport in popularity over there.

Rewflo {Ed002's Note - I moved to England to do my Masters originally and have lived in Europe for 30 years, so there has been plenty of time to become involved.}

Thanks ed. What was your masters in? If you dont mind me asking.

Rewflo {Ed002's Note - I have a degree in English and History from the University of California at Berkeley's College of Letters and Sciences and a Masters in Jounalism and Law for University College London.}

Brillant Ed...now wonder your replies and comments are so insightful. No disrespect of course to non-graduands. I have a DPhil from York University and though that doesn't make me special it has made a difference in my life.

What is jounalism Ed002? Only kidding!

Our benefit that you have lived here for 30 years and come to love the game though. Can we not tempt your allegiance? You'd look great in red!

I'm impressed. Really. So you're NOT Gabriele Marcotti in disguise? Thought not. How simple of me.

Someone on this site (think it was Ozone) was stating that he felt Carroll had been "hiding" and used his knowledge of semi pro football to back this up. I spoke to a very well known and respected former striker (starting striker for one of top 4 teams at '94 world cup) recenty, who said this about the notion of hiding....

-No professional striker, even poor ones, hide. You are either better than your marker or he is better than you. But no hiding. There is always space and he (Carroll) seems to find it well, he just doesnt find the right space sometimes. He seems to be improving in the right ways, it will just take time, moving from Viola to Juventus was a difficult transition for me at first because I was learning an entirely knew whay of team play and the coaches also wanted me to change my body. This was very hard because my body had been the same for 2 or 3 years. -

I may have paraphrased here and there which is why I have not put it in quotation marks as it was quite a long conversation but if said ex-player thinks Carrolls moving in the right direction then I will happily listen to it as he was a phenomenal player in his day.

Rewflo

No Andy does'nt hide! Ozone is a fool, a troll never to be seen again by clean eyes and soul of a fair poster. He is lost, to the depths of the Man utd (punishment) pages. Where he shall spend the rest of his days arguing with his reflection in the mirror.All the best.

KNEE JERK

The Striker in question is one : Roberto Baggio - The divine ponytail .

I wonder , what does that make Andy Carroll - The ______ ponytail .

Qwerty

To be fair rewflo, that is a fair point. I may have vented my spleen post match through anger and gone down the 'hiding' route out of frustration because I was disappointed.

You raise two points within your post. Firstly body shape and secondly losing your man. The points I raised previously were that I don't feel Carroll has the body shape to lose his marker off a standing start as he has no turn of pace due to his body shape (this can be seen in the way he runs). Secondly, he clearly knows this hence the jossling movement in the penalty area we keep seeing which isn't inviting the right type of crosses from our wingers.

If your man seems to think that he will find space eventually through the way he is moving and at some point it will all come together then heres hoping.

Ozone

You're entitled to your opinion Ozone. Just thought I'd share an observation given by someone obviously qualified to do so.

I was surprised that he'd seen Carroll play at all to be honest, though I suppose I shouldnt be I've never seen someone with such a keen interest in football.

He's not really my man lol. We just have some of the same friends and acquiantances.

The FA took £40,000 off our Club and Luis yesterday and it set me thinking how long that would last with their apparent spending style before they came back for more. Chauffeur driven limo for the Chief Executive, probably First Class travel and accomodation and meals at expensive restaurants for staff. What exactly do these people spend the fines on?
Also, do Premier League clubs pay a higher rate for indiscretions than lower leagues and if so, why?
Midsred {Ed002's Note - The money is recycled in to the lower tiers of the English and Welsh game - the so called "grass roots". Punishments for the lower tier teams is less - the reason being the obvious financial constraints they work under.}

29 Dec 2011 09:35:42
ed correct me if im wrong on any of this but as far as i am.was aware..

Torres sold 50 mil and was on around 110k a week
Babel 7 mil and 50 k a week
Poulsen 40 k a week
Degen 15k a week
Jovanavic 60k (became 120k a week due to signing on fe
Meireles 13 mill 70k a week
Then the greek insua ayalla etc 80k a week
Aquilani and cole 5mill 110k a week

75 mil in and 550k a week (rounded down a little as im not 100 % sure on wages)

We all know the transfers in have cost around 100 mil but there wages combined are costing 350 - 400k so if u look at it from a different view we are actually saving alot of money each week which for future forecasts makes the owners net spend extremely low

Just thought id show this and ask who would take our original squad and maybe 5-10 million over this 1?

Thanks eds if you post this just hate the pessimism
Shane K Lfc {Ed002's Note - I am not going to get in to this too much, but there are numerous other costs folks have chosen to ignore. The pay offs to Jovanovic, Degen, El Zhar and others. The continuing contribution to the wages or signing on fees of Cole, Aquilani and maybe other, the 5M euro final payment to Roma, agent fees, VAT etc.. It is certainly not as cut and dried as many folks think and the club are running at a loss. Howver, the owners are responsible and the club is moving in the right direction.}

I understand what youre saying ed but the point of this was just a basic comparison between a 12 month period as all the figures you have mentioned are very hard to find out accurately and instil into this because you would also have to look at signing on fees we get from loaning out players etc. and comparing marketability of the players from last to this based on shirt sales etc.

so i tried to just do this basic 1 so people might stop complaining that 100 million has been "thrown down the toilet " when it clearly has not been..
another thing is the average ages aswell which has been considerably dropped..
Shane K Lfc {Ed002's Note - The problem is Shane that unless all the figures are considered then the level of investment and the return on that investment cannot be quantified.}

Are the accounts a matter of public record ed? I recall a while back someone got hold of the Chelsea accounts, correct me if im wrong though. All the best.

KNEE JERK {Ed002's Note - Accounts are indeed a matter of public record. You won't find accounts covering this past summer for a while yet though - about another 17 months.}

Vat is only paid to the hmrc when received from another club ( ie Torres which Chelsea pay) & reclaimed from hmrc when Liverpool buy a player ( an expense). The same goes with agent fees ( if Liverpool are paying the agent, the vat element is reclaimable).

The Irish Rover {Ed002's Note - You need to read up on reclaiming agent fees.}

Is the Vat not reclaimable Ed002? I assume they charge Vat, being over the £60 odd thousand threshold. If it's not, why not?

The Irish Rover {Ed002's Note - No, and it has been an on-going issue with the clubs:

"Clubs and players increasingly use agents when negotiating the acquisition, sale or terms of the contract of players. Agents established in the UK providing services to a client in the UK will charge VAT on their commission. Depending upon who the agent sees as its customer, non-UK agents may be required to charge local VAT.

A number of different relationships exist between players, agents and football clubs and Customs position is that in some cases the agent provides its services, not to the football club, but to the player. On this basis Customs claim that the football club is unable to recover the VAT charged on agents fees and, as the player is in most cases
not registered for VAT, the player is also unable to recover the VAT.
However, where the club is contractually responsible for the payment to the agent there is also the possibility that even if the agent is deemed to be supplying services to the player the VAT should be recoverable by the football club.

This possibility has been presented to Customs by a number of football clubs and, in some cases, Customs have accepted the point."

The whole issue of VAT in football is a big deal to both the clubs and customs. I could give lots of interesting examples about players being registered for VAT and one reasonably high profile player being paid by his club for interior design services, one being paid in tax-exempt cars and one in oil paintings. There have in the past been cases of players being registered as having their primary home offshore and being paid abroad.}

After the Blackburn game I have given this site a swerve because I thought it would be full of anti Kenny and the team posts, I havn't checked but I am sure it was. I just wish people would look at the bigger picture and see beyond just this season, Kenny has moved out a lot of crap and in the main bought well, just compare the squad when Hodgson left and now and also how we are playing now compared to then. We will come good, maybe not this season but deffo next, we need continuity and give kenny the chance to build his team, we gave Houllier 5years and Rafa the same so give Kenny the same opportunity and back him and the lads BECAUSE THEY WILL COME GOOD.

Waro

It was BIG TIME!!

Do you think that Hodgeson shouldve been given the same time Waro? Maybe he wouldve come good too. Maybe we should have given Hicks and Gillet the same time that David Moores had and they would have come good.

I understand what youre saying and do think more time is needed but to say we gave someone else more time so we should give the current encumbant more time is faulty logic. As they say in the stock market, the sign of a good broker isnt spotting up and coming stocks. Its spotting when to cut your losses on one on the way down before it takes you out.

No, because Roy played a crap brand of football and didnt get what the club and fans was about. All the best.

KNEE JERK

You have too be realistic with your argument regarding Hodgson, he was never the right man for the job and that's not just my opinion it was the opinion of the majority of Liverpool fans I spoke to before a ball had been kicked under his tenure, factoring Hicks and Gillett in to the arguement is ridiculous aswell, if you are not happy with Kenny then that's your opinion and your entitled to it but try not to mask your opinion with pointless/stupid comparisons.

Waro

Maybe he wouldve come good though? Maybe the team were just about to gel and obliterate everyone? Maybe Ngog was just about to click. Maybe Hicks and Gillet were just about to grant untold fortunes to LFC.

Obviously this is all untrue. My point was simply that we cant do the same as the past. If something isnt working then we have to correct it quick as possible, and with the exceptionally poor results against the lesser teams...something (against them anyway) is obviously not working.

I was only pointing out Waro that your own comparison was also a redundant one. Kenny should be judged on what he does now.

Not what Benitez did, or Houllier. On what he has done now is good. Is it good enough? Not quite. He should be given more time I agreed with you on that. Just felt that saying he should be gieven more time because other people were is false logic. Hope no offense was taken as I did not mean it.

No offence taken, everybody is entitled to an opinion

Waro

Lesser teams? you obviously think we have a god given rite to 3 points just because a side are not as big a club? you have to battle for every point in this division! I can understand your frustration at some results, but in almost every game this season we have played some excellent pass and move football and created a stack of chances I think you would agree, and with some luck better finishing and less inspired goalkeeping we would be around 8 points better off and cruising to a champions league spot. If Hodgson would have been given time we would now have had a decent chance of the play offs. Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.

Waro

I dont think we have a god given rite, but I do feel that as a supporter of THE most successful team in the english league filled with international quality players that we absolutely should beat every team that currently resides below us in the league.

I'm not saying disrespect our opponents, I'm saying respect ourselves correctly. Whether it sounds disrespectful or not, the truth is we are a better team than most of the league. We have better players than most of the league. We are more successful than all of the league. If anybody has the right to believe they will win surely its us?

not really a rumour but anyway.. wonder what my fellow liverpool fans would think due to the lack of goals/chance conversion rate. we create a hell of alot of chances.. what about darren bent epl proven goalscorer thinks hes 27 english prob get him for between £16-20 mill.

I think its not just down to the chances not being converted, but also because some of the chances are not good enough to give the striker a decent chance.
Some of the final balls and crosses have been woeful.

If you look at statistics the best goal per chance finisher is actually demba ba with 60 % accuracy and 31% conversion...
are squads conversion this season is 8.2%

I dont understand why bent is being mentioned he has no composure or first touch! How he has demanded such high transfer fees is beyond me. He isnt for me
LeeWils

I posted a few days ago that currently Luuk de Jong is the most clinical finisher in europe with a 70% conversion ratio and the season before it was 50%.

That will drop in england of course, but even if it drops by half that still makes him more clinical than Lionel Messi (28% if I remember correctly)

just wanted to say that i think liverpool fans are bieng a little pesemistic, when kenny took over last jan we were in a bad position but we had a great second half to the season , we finished really strong, so my point is that with 20 games left in the season we are in a fantastic position, only 3 points of cl footy, so if we can finish this season as strong as we did the last then i think 4th is the least we should expect and with stevie comig back it will be like a new massive signing for the jan transfer window , i mean can u actually imagine gettin some1 of stevies quality in your team when your makin that final push for the top four, he will vitalise the team , he will add energy and urgency into the way we play and more important he will make and score vital goals, can you imagine having him in some of the games where we have struggled to finish teams off in the final 3rd, i know we probably have to buy a striker in jan but stevie is the missing link , the bit of the jigsaw that blends the midfield with the forwards, so i for one am looking forward to the second half of the season with relish and cinfident in the knowledge that we will be a force to be reckoned with once again.

i may have match of the day fever as ed002 put it but i like the look of celtics forrest from the game, he strikes me as ayoung bellamy minus the temper. Also i think that gary hooper is an excellent finisher from this season and would be easily good enough for the premier league. They'll both be worth a punt because their cheap and im sure would jump at the chance to play in the premier league. Is there any interest eds ? {Ed002's Note - I don't know of any interest that Liverpool have in Celtic players.}

Why would they want to leave Celtic for Liverpool? At least at Celtic they have a chance of Champions League football

does anyone else realise that it was allowing raúl mereiles to leave anfield had a bigger effect on the squad than what we first imagined. I think that we need a player to replace him- creative, playmaker and skillful and can score. In other words a good no.10- along with a center forward. Stop this balls about carroll he'll come good he has time on his side.

Miereles was only good for about four games. The rest of the time he was varied from indifferent to shocking. You can't carry players like that at this level. Be thankful Chelsea were daft enough to take him.

He was forever Pulling out of 50/50 tackles. Which if your a Midfielder probably not a good sign!!!

Glad we have people like Jay to not pull out of 50/50 tackles, won us the game did that...oh no wait it cost him a red card. Perhaps pulling out of 50/50's is ok every now and then

I've always felt there was more to Miereles leaving than we realise and that Liverpool did what was best for the club. Miereles attitude had changed somehow just before he left. I think he was hankering after more money.

Team against Newcastle:
4-1-2-1-2

Reina
Johnson Agger Skrtel Enrique
Adam
maxi Bellamy
Shelvey
Carroll kuyt

Manno

Reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
Downing Adam Henderson Bellamy
Gerrard
Carroll

In my view Gerrards best position is just behind our number 9, worked so well back in the day with Torres, play Gerrard til he gets tired, he's only back but i feel we're missing a leader up there to get us the wins we deserve... Liverpool to win 2-0, I really believe in Andy Carroll and think this is his opportunity to show just what he's capable of, doesn't matter how much we paid for him when he wears the Liverbird on his heart we should give him our full support, i'd rather cheer all our players on through the good and bad times than give out or give up on any one of our players... Us as fans have the responsibility/duty and world recognition as the best fans in football, lets rock Anfield and be the 12th man and lift our team to a top 4 place, we wont get there without support, we'll play with more confidence with the crowd on our side, come on The Mighty Reds

Rocky

Gerrard won't start. He will be on the bench. It's to risky to start him yet. If we get a good lead expect him to appear for 10 mins tops. If we are struggling expect to see him earlier. I expect to see Carroll and Kuyt up front in a 4-4-2 initially and Henderson also to start. The rest of the middle 4 is anyones guess - so many options despite injuries and suspensions. Back four writes itself at present.

Adam cant tackle so having him in a DM role is suicide
LeeWils

I personally think Gerrard plays best as Attacking Midfield in what the italian call the 'Trequartista' role. That was his role for our champs league season.

If he plays too far forward then he cant arrive late in the box to pick up loose balls, which is a bit of a specialty of his.

Just my opinion though

29 Dec 2011 01:28:56
Why would Kuyt possibly be on his way in the summer? Surely he's happy at Liverpool and KD must be happy with him using him as regular as possible in the starting 11

Is Kuyt happy with Kenny?

After all he was the first name on the teamsheet in Rafa's time but not anymore!

I guess when you had a touch as Good as Kenny it must be hard watching Dirk in training the ball flying of his shins!!

Kenny was over estimated

Would kucka from genoa be of interest to Liverpool. How about brkic from Siena and begovic from stoke. Stoke is limiting begovic playing time to play sorensen.

If Inter arent quite convinced by Kucka, and their midfield needs a lot of work, then I dont think we should be either.

Mauricio Pellegrino: joined Rafa on the bench

Julian Dicks: word was said he cost more than robbie keane

Andriy Voronin Rafa loved him but he could not score bad hair too

Nunez: scored against Chelsea, in the 3“2 League Cup loss never was seen again
Pegguy Arphexad: Shocking goalkeeper

Jean-Michel Ferri: who?
Fernando Morientes: Was supposed to be world class, couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo!
Abel Xavier: Looked like Santa Claus, but rarely delivered
Christian Poulsen: Couldn't pass, tackle or defend but Roy spent 5m on him...miracle we managed to sell him!

This was morientes stats
from 2005 jan - 15 games 3 goals
2005“06 - 45 games 9 goals

a guidline for people to see how carroll is doing.

How can you forget Deggen !! He was by far the worst!!

Jean Michel Ferri was bought as a spy by Houllier to report back to him about what was said in the dressing room.

It's in both Fowler and Gerrards books

How can you guys forget Biscan? The worst player i have ever seen to wear the red shirt.

BooDaBooze

Forgot to add:

Paul Konchesky: Couldn't defend
Milan Jovanovic: Looked utterly lost

Ha ha ha Biscan was afunny guy. I remember being in the Kop for a pre season friendly once just before kick off, the crowd started chanting "Igor Igor" and he turned to wave just as the centre was taken, as a result of him being more concerned with waving to us he lost possession stright away as it was nicked off him without him even knowing the centre had been taken.

Rewflo

Biscan is a liverpool legend

Macca, do you think gerrard will still be on the bench even after the suarrez ban announcement?

I am not Macca but do you really need Macca to answer that!

After a long absence and Gerrard clearly looking off the pace in the last match he would be certain to be on the bench.
