Balotelli wants to stay at LFC could it be he won't get the same money anywhere else and stays here for the amount written in his contract?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed030's Note - As well as no team wanting to pay the amounts of money Liverpool are asking. }

28 May 2015 08:40:00
Balotelli himself is not that concerned with money if what people in Milan say is true. It's his agent that pages for higher wages. Mario gives a large portion of his wages away.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 May 2015 14:17:54
Nevada. I like Balotelli and hope if he stays he can prove us fans wrong and adapt to the system.

Anyone else find it staggering that we've given Toure another year, yet are putting a young defender with good potential in Ilori up for sale? Not to mention the money we paid for him.

Bizarre.

Cheers

Believable9 Unbelievable3

{Ed030's Note - I agree, It's down to unneeded signings such as Toure as to why Liverpool are not bringing through these youth players and instead are wasting millions ever year on the wages of players such as Toure rather than developing talent such as Ilori. }

27 May 2015 23:57:59
I'd keep Toure and Ilori and sell Skrtel

Agree16 Disagree1

28 May 2015 00:42:58
Totally concur Stured and Ed030! We as a club are not in a position such as say Chelsea whereby they brought Drogba back as a bit part player, with whom I can imagine was on grandiose wages.

Yes with Stevie gone our squad now lacks experience, but I simply can't comprehend why we would continue to pay high wages to a particular player that is purely and simply a squad player at best irrespective of "experience", and especially one that is average at best when he does occasionally come onto the field of play?

Don't get me wrong Toure comes across as a decent bloke, and every time there is a news conference or interview it is highlighted, and re-emphasised - what a good bloke he is, but why "employ" a player simply because he is a "good bloke"? . why not come out and tell it like it is . the bloke is a YES man, who fits the bill, the club unfortunately has a manager who is the ultimate YES man, we don't need players who follow the same "party" line . what we need are players who are First team level, and have the why for where to push and motivate themselves to put pressure on the entire squad to achieve a certain standard, not feel comfortable or happy merely to keep the bench warm!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he showed, when not playing alongside Skrtel, that he can be an excellent player for us. The issue is not Toure, it is Skittles, time to get rid of him, he is on more than Toure as well.}

28 May 2015 02:15:45
You guys are overplaying illori like he will come good or something. Yes he may deserve a shot but if he doesn't work out which will most like be the case and we let go of one or even two established centre backs so we can bring in youth all the time I can assure you we won't be achieving anything anytime soon. We crave success but on modern football you need a balance, and more so for the experienced established players. They are the ones that know what it takes to win they are the leaders, if there was a Steven Gerard or Jamie carragher in the academy do you not think we would know about it. You know when someone is good enough, it's as simple as that and illori was never ever good enough for us.

Agree0 Disagree3

28 May 2015 03:59:48
Toure should be first choice for a season. His experience and leadership is vital and a good run with Sakho could solidify our defence. Bring in a disciplined right back and a top GK and we would have a pretty strong defence.

Red Rum

Agree3 Disagree1

28 May 2015 06:00:14
Stupid - sums up our approach to transfers and approach to our youth system. Toure offers nothing except average squad cover, I see no reason to keep him. Ilori has been mucked about since he joined and has never been given even a half chance - I feel sorry for the kid - also don't think this sort of thing helps endear our club to other young players either.

Agree0 Disagree2

28 May 2015 08:05:25
Toure is a good player when not played right back,and played alongside a proper left sided centreback.
The best thing all round is to sell Skrtel and keep Ilori and toure.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - why is it the best thing to keep the overpaid useless centre half that makes all the others worse?? Skrtel is paid more and is terrible, he has no idea how to work as a partnership.}

28 May 2015 10:34:52
Agree totally ED001 I want Skrtel gone. I don't know if you were replying to me,or to some 1 else earlier in the thread there. :-/

Agree1 Disagree0

28 May 2015 11:10:02
Ed001, bobatron is with you on that you just misread it.

I'm with the gang for keeping Toure and selling Skrtel definitely. I like Toure and the leadership he brings to the team. Once he is fit I think he is a good option and the younger players could learn a lot from him.

Skrtel splits all of the fans. I'm on the side who really wishes he would go, I don't rate him at all.

On Ilori, I haven't seen him so I don't know if he's the answer but it still seems odd if we sell him without giving him any chance. If he's any good at all then we should at least try him or else try loan him to a PL club for PL experience (and also so I can see him play a lot easier which is important of course!).

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - sorry I misread it, apologies. I was still waking up at the time, and obviously still a bit bleary eyed to make such a stupid mistake.}

28 May 2015 19:37:53
If Ilori and many of the young players are being bought for good money YET are not given a chance, who`s fault is that? We will never know how good he and the other kids are until we have a manager willing and able to give them a chance. Those saying "if he doesn`t work out" and all. how will we know if he doesn`t pan out if we NEVER play him. Spent 7m on him YET haven`t even seen him on the bench. Which young player would wanna come here after that shambolic peice of management?

Agree0 Disagree0

27 May 2015 23:04:43
Tbh I think markovic has been a huge disappointment but I'm not sure he should be sold. He's still very young and may possibly be worth sending out on loan for a year to regain his mojo somewhere else.
Hasn't done anything near to justify his huge transfer fee and imo looks way out of his depth and lost in most games he's played.(to be fair out of position mostly) but still you need goals and assists from your wingers and he has provided very few.
Sad for a player who I was quite excited about when he signed.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

{Ed030's Note - I agree he has had a disappointing season however I believe it to be down to moving to the premier league a year or two early. Personally think it would of been more beneficial to him to stay at Benfica a while longer and work on his game more before getting his move. }

28 May 2015 01:24:03
He's also been asked to fit a variety of rolls and hasn't had a decent run of games.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 May 2015 05:06:17
Probably the attacking player in the PL with the worst finishing. can't score and doesn't supply jack in the box

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - I think you will find that Balotelli trumps Markovic in both those things.}

28 May 2015 06:02:37
He, as you mention, has been played out of position for the most part. He's also a young fella, in a foreign country and an incredibly tough league. He was always going to take time to settle and, with the way Rodgers has used him, it's only meant that time has increased. I still think he has the potential to be a quality player - importantly he must be given a fair shout by fans and by whatever manager is in place next season. Selling him will simply mean we lose money on a player who still has the potential to be very useful - so given our cavalier, amateurish approach to transfers that's probably what we will do!

Agree1 Disagree0

27 May 2015 22:45:24
I see reports that lazar markovic could be sold this summer! It's a bit early for that think he needs run of games in his natural position would be sad to see him go

Believable19 Unbelievable2

27 May 2015 23:24:54
If someone offered £20m for him I'd let him go.

Agree7 Disagree4

28 May 2015 00:01:59
He was never ready for the EPL. Ibe was more ready than he is yet BR loaned him out and brought in Marko who would need time which we don't have. He's a talented kid but we don't have the time to wait for him to grow, unfortunately. He did not sign himself. If we can get good money for him, let him go.

Agree6 Disagree3

28 May 2015 07:35:36
Who do you think will pay £22 million pounds for him? Oh wait, we did.

Agree4 Disagree0

28 May 2015 11:11:57
Better to keep him. I'd imagine you'd be looking more at £12m than £20m so let's keep him and play him in an attacking position to see whether or not he can adjust to the PL.

PSG 2011

Agree2 Disagree0

27 May 2015 22:39:26
AC Milan was hardly "full of world class players" he had a few stars yes and some very, very good players, but I'd hardly say they were all world class.

Agree1 Disagree11

27 May 2015 22:44:35
Pretty sure neither Reggiana nor Parma were full of world class players.

Agree7 Disagree0

27 May 2015 22:53:34
hsf, he had kaka in his prime the best in the world at the time.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 May 2015 23:06:39
Parma have always been deceptively full of talent in their youth Team.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 May 2015 00:03:29
i consider his AC Milan side to be one of the best club sides I have ever seen. I mean look back at that starting eleven that night in Istanbul.

GK Dida
RB Cafu
CB Jaap Stam
CB Alessandro Nesta
LB Paolo Maldini (c)
DM Andrea Pirlo
RM Gennaro Gattuso
LM Clarence Seedorf
AM Kaká
CF Andriy Shevchenko
CF Hernán Crespo

That to me is what made that night even more special. The fact that an Lfc team including djimi traore, Harry kewell and Milan baros beat them is still amazing.

Agree10 Disagree1

28 May 2015 06:04:52
You make a great point wassa. I'd say that the only "weak" points of that team were Seedorf (who's powers had significantly waned by the time we played them) and Gattuso (who, though a battler, has always struck me as a somewhat overrated player). No doubt about it though we punched so far above our weight it was insane. A special night, I'm happy I was actually able to see it in the flesh.

Agree1 Disagree1

28 May 2015 08:16:31
Haych I hope you were taking the mick when saying 2011!!!! That wa sa team more than capable of winning its own dometics league and going on a decent cup run in europe.

The AC Milan squad has always been good for as long as I remember(Till 3 years ago).Pretty sure, he had Abiatti,maldini,schevchenko,Pirlo,Gattusso,etc when he took over. Once again a strong team,with a very good nucleus

Agree1 Disagree0

27 May 2015 21:17:59
Bacca would be the ideal striker for coutinho and would work well with sturridge . Don't waste the 25 m on bentekers

Believable15 Unbelievable3

27 May 2015 22:03:14
Don't Sevilla have Champions League now? We may not have the pull.

Agree10 Disagree1

28 May 2015 00:34:05
Why would Bacca want to come to Liverpool?

No Champions League
Team not good enough
Manager not good enough

Agree7 Disagree0

28 May 2015 09:29:38
More money, the lad was a fisherman not so long ago. Sevilla can't match prem waged, same as with.costa. Why leave ath when you are top dog, champions and in champions league. Money!

Agree0 Disagree0

27 May 2015 20:56:20
surely we need a manager that can attract big name players. As Kenny and Rafa did.

Believable13 Unbelievable3

27 May 2015 21:13:23
Big wages and Champions league positions dictate that.

Agree8 Disagree10

27 May 2015 21:39:39
You do realise we have never really bought world class talent. Ever!

Noone has attracted anymore than Brendan!

And the club will never go ib that direction with these owners (no critism but its not brendans fault were not after these so called world class players) itd the model we work under.

I know the others brought players that would turn into the world class bracket but they were not bought that way!

Alonso 10m, mash 17m, Torres 24mil, reins 4 mil

Suarez 22 mil

Coutinho 8 mil

Agree1 Disagree11

27 May 2015 21:39:47
What big names did Kenny attract?

Agree8 Disagree9

27 May 2015 21:54:32
Irish Rover he bought the biggest SUAREZ

Agree10 Disagree3

27 May 2015 21:59:10
Irish Rover - Peter Beardsley, Glen Hysen (taking him from under Taggarts nose), Johnny Barnes, Rushie back from Juve, Steve McMahon, John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Alan Shearer, David Batty, Tim Flowers. All part of league title winning teams.

Agree10 Disagree3

27 May 2015 22:24:13
007,think you'll find hodgson had already signed Suarez before dalglish took over

Agree3 Disagree4

27 May 2015 22:25:28
Lol. The OP shold have thrown Bob Paisley in as well. Total nonsense off course going back 20 odd years. i'm not surprised.

Ps Kenny did not bring Suarez. The deal was already done.

Agree3 Disagree4

27 May 2015 22:27:49
Whoever the people are who disagree that KING KENNY never bought Suarez need to look it up as its a FACT and not a stat.

Agree4 Disagree7

27 May 2015 22:40:28
Why's it nonsense Rover? Kenny attracted those players did he not?

Agree2 Disagree3

27 May 2015 22:43:46
i think you will find dalgiesh spotted Suarez whilst commentating and bought him. Rodgers claimed it was him but was taking credit for something he didn't do.

Agree1 Disagree2

27 May 2015 22:45:19
There was interest in Suarez before Keeny took over as caretaker and if you want facts surely Fsg signed him?

Agree3 Disagree1

27 May 2015 23:01:49
Actually when have Liverpool ever signed a big named player? Havent all these players had the majority of their fame/success at Liverpool? Was Suarez a big name at Ajax or did he make his name at Lfc. What about Aldo, Alonso etc?

Agree2 Disagree2

27 May 2015 23:04:36
Lallana £25m?
Lovren £20m?
Allen £15m?

That is what we are in for when we sell Sterling and have BR in charge to spend the money.

Agree2 Disagree2

27 May 2015 23:23:19
So Hodgson attracted Suarez???

Agree0 Disagree0

28 May 2015 00:17:07
KK oversaw the final lap of Suarez's arrival but it was Roy who sparked the deal and laid the ground work. Suarez was already bent on coming here before KK took over

Agree3 Disagree0

27 May 2015 23:23:41
Whoever pressed disagree to the Kenny signings would you please let me know which of the said players you disagree he signed.

Agree1 Disagree6

28 May 2015 05:17:06
Suarez was the captain of Ajax. They were holding on to 35 Mil for suarez , due to his biting habit, we got him for 22 Mil.

Same with barcelona they got him for 65-70 Mil reduced prize due to biting. still it is considered bargain. Think what hell of a player he is.

He was already known player while playing for ajax and his handball against Khana.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 May 2015 07:40:59
Irish Rover's point was about KD's second spell as Manager at LFC, not what happened a quarter of a century ago. But sure, LFC fans like to throw the past in your face whenever any sort of discussion is on-going.

And to answer the OP's question, a big manager does attract big players, but none of these big names would take a huge pay cut to join LFC now with Rodgers in charge, and no CL football.

Liverpool FC attracted Luis Suarez, not Hodgson, Dalglish or Benitez.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 May 2015 09:46:03

Bacca looks impressive too. The lads got the lot, tenacious, left foot, right got, score with his head, good movement. Exactly the type of forward we need.

A bit pedantic I know, considering everything else that's going on with LFC at the moment, but am loving the Sevilla kit in tonight's Europa Final. Plain red. It's what ours should be really. And it's made by NB.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 May 2015 20:02:34
Eds and fellow reds I wonder what do you think of us allowing a contract clause which apperantly Benteke demands which will gurantee him to be first choice striker.

At the time when GJ was rumured to have such a clause I thought this was ubelivebly unprofessional from the team to agree something like that.

But maybe desperate times call for desperate measuers. If we cannot compete with the other top 4 in money or CL or trophies potential maybe this is our way to lure the likes of Benteke. Ideally jsut by the manager tells him he will be first choice (and let's face it with Sturridge injured and our other strikers quality he will probably be anyway) but a contract clause is something else.

I know some people here don't think he is right for us, I think he can be a very good signing but assuming you think he is worth the 30M and can score the 20 goals a season, what do people think about such cluase as some kind of leverage for attracting top players (I am sure there are some sphisticated ways to settle this so it will be dependent for example in a certain number of goals scored in a given period).

Of course other than tying the hands of the manager it may also create huge unrest with the other strikers. Mourinho would never agree something like that but maybe we have to?

Believable1 Unbelievable10

27 May 2015 20:54:42
Benteke is perfect if we played to his strenghts and he wasn't as injury prone as stude and didn't cost 30 mil! Lol

Out of all the big men the one who could work perfect as a disciplined rock solid wall would be manzukic hands down, offers nothing if you don't use him right though, but if you played the wingers inbound and has him linking up and using his strength would be great. But the eds have already mentioned that with him fee there trying to get vietto and/or cavani so I can't see it being low! And he's worth no more than 20/25 absolute tops!

Agree0 Disagree3

27 May 2015 21:01:09
If true, which I doubt, tell him to get stuffed, it is the road to no town.

Imagine the conflict this would cause throughout the whole team and why would any other striker even try in training if he has no chance of making the team.

Plus he is not good enough to make these demands !

Agree0 Disagree2

27 May 2015 21:34:48
Am I the only one who doesn't want Benteke? I'd rather have Vietto if he's available

Agree8 Disagree0

28 May 2015 00:21:06
If that clause is the similar to the "alleged" clause that GJ had in his contract that he had to play all the time when fit then he can jog on. He ain't even that good anyway, especially for the crazy money they are talking about.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 May 2015 22:50:09
Maxi96 .could you inform Br that benteke is not a goal keeper but a goal scorer ,but I think Brendon's should try him at right back for a season so emre can could play in goal

Here are 4 experienced players who are available and would influence our starting team Massively. With many high earners expected to leave this summer I'm sure if the club wanted to they could finance these moves.

Carlos Tevez - Experienced and knows how to find the back of the net.
Pedro - Would be a perfect replacement for Sterling.
Yaya Toure - Could maybe be persuaded since his brother is staying.
Cech - Top keeper.

Add Montoya and I'd be happy with those signings this summer, even thought the chances are very slim at best.

You use the word 'available' in a very misleading way. They can all play in CL teams, City wll not let Toure join us and Cech may want some game time otherwise why leave chelsea, and even if any of them would consider coming, if they are indeed available we will have very strong competition from some of the big teams (and lose them as always0.

In other words, keep dreaming.

'here are 4 players who would probably never join us without Champions League but, if they did, would demand ridiculous wages and only be good for a maximum of a couple more seasons'. What is the point? These are the sorts of signings that continue to hold us back. We have enough experience in the team, what we need is young, hungry players, not aging players looking for a retirement nest egg.

{Ed002's Note - He is a decent player and potential signing. If you want to take a "whiz" try the bathroom.}

27 May 2015 18:15:20
Hi Ed002,

I've seen you mention quite a few times that the club's asking price for Balo was too high for anyone to bite. Although I'm not asking for specifics or any numbers, I'm just curious as to whether the club would make a profit if a club was actually stupid enough to bite at the asking price?

Thanks in advance.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - This is sort of why we don't talk numbers - his cost to Liverpool is not just the transfer fee, but a signing on fee, outrageous agent and other representative fees, wages, insurance etc.. So I don't want to go there.}

27 May 2015 19:02:44
Just in the transfer fee alone Liverpool are going to take a hiding to get rid of him. Nobody on their right mind is going to pay more than £4m for him and even then he's over-priced. Yet 12 months ago we paid £16m.

And therein lies a problem. I assume the club will be looking to recoup most of the £16m out;ay - which simply is not going to happen and the only way we will get rid of him is to be big boys and take the loss on the chin.

Agree1 Disagree1

27 May 2015 21:28:48
if you get in a different manager who actually will play him instead of leaving him to rot like he's broken both his legs then maybe he will produce more. i'm sure with a manager like ancelotti or klopp he'd at least be value for 12-15 goals throughout a season(all competitions), which would be better than selling him for peanuts.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 May 2015 00:16:03
Bizarrely enough I agree with you Haych - get in another pacy striker like Sturridge alongside him and play him in a front 2 and I think he'll be very effective. I'd still prefer we sold him as he's not a natural fit for our play, but he can definitely add something different if we need to switch it up so why sell for peanuts.

Just a personal view. I read today that Mario B's agent today said that Mario will be at Liverpool FC next season. I think this means Brendon will be moved on, IMO this is Mario saying "il give it one more season under a new manager here" personally; i would have mixed emotions on both counts!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Posturing to get the price reduced if he has said that. He did mention before that Balotelli would see his contract run down rather than move somewhere he doesn't want to go. All posturing.}

27 May 2015 17:32:51
Very cunning by his agent Ed. Stating he's staying so we bow down to him and allow him to leave cheaper than what we want for him.

Hope we do move him on, clearly he's not wanted.

{Ed002's Note - It is hardly cunning - it is a simple case of the stupidity that thinks anyone will pay the price Liverpool are asking.}

Another player wouldn't be as lazy and disruptive as Balotelli. The problem with the lad is that he brings a whole host of negatives, on and off the pitch, which do nothing but cause issues for the club he is at. His laziness will be his undoing and, as he shows no will to change, seems a pointless player to keep at the club - all it will do is drain the wage bill and ultimately undermine the team. It can't be good for the squad to go into training and see Balotelli's half arsed attempts at building up his fitness - it sends a bad message and could be especially problematic to our youngsters - we need to get rid whilst the name 'Balotelli' still has some stock left in it.

over the last couple of seasons I've read posts on here and a lot of fans go on about the money side of signing a player but to be honest the club make enough money to pay big wages so i don't worry about how much a top players wages are going to be, i also am realistic enough to know that if we want top players who are going to improve the team are going to be on high wages and if that wins us the prem then them players will be worth every penny, that's why i can't understand fans on here who moan about how much wages a player wants, all the top teams pay the wages and they win things, we can't win anything by getting players who are not on high wages because it will mean the player is not good enough, a lot of fans did not want fabregas because they thought he was not good enough and that he would want big wages well he helped chelsea win the prem so again to me he would have been worth every penny in wages we won't win anything on a shoestring budget, i know we were 5th in the wage bill and untill the last game we were 5th in the prem, the top 2 in the wages will most probably be chelsea and man city maybe not in that order but you can't escape the fact that they came 1st and 2nd and man city won the prem last season, as I've said chelsea got fabregas and they won the prem they finished 5th last season without paying the money for him in his transfer fee and the wages, while our fans are moaning about his wages chelsea win the prem with him, maybe if we would have got him he would have been the difference in were we finished to finishing in the top 4 and being in the champs league, oh well i still see fans on here going on about players wages being too much i wonder when these fans will wake up and realise to win thing you have to have top players who will want top wages, you can't say don't pay top wages then moan we can't get top players, because its easy for a player to chose who is going to pay him the most if we don't pay the going rate for that player then he will never sign for us anyway

Afternoon Eds and Reds,

Off topic slightly but wanted to get the opinions of everyone.

With all the talk of centre forwards and English players, I wanted to know who is everyone's favourite English centre forward of their generation?

To get things started mine would have to be Shearer for his finishing and power. As a well rounded CF I can't think of many as good, other than Rooney. Was torn between Shearer and Fowler but didn't want to seem bias.

Thoughts Eds or reds?

The reason I went with shearer over fowler is because for all round CF play, finishing, heading, strength, link up play. He was also great at a set piece of any kind.

Fowler for me was more of a ST with natural finishing, dribbling, pace and wizardry! He was better than most give him credit for with his heading.

Quite different players but equally as brilliant.

Also my parents didn't appreciate me crawling around the living room trying to sniff the skirting boards when we scored! So if I was actually being biased it's because Robbie got me the belt and rations, thanks god.

Sorry for two questions in a day ed ( thanks for the info on the Fifa case btw )
I was just curious, if it's not about the money to young raheem, why has he not handed in a transfer request? What bonus', privileges would he be losing by handing in a request. I thought it was just a loyalty bonus? Scratching my head as his agent said he wouldn't sign a £900,000 contract, but yet to hand in a transfer request.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - He loses 5% of Liverpool's proportion of the transfer fee if he hands in a transfer request. He is to some extent, probably almost entirely, just doing as instructed.}

27 May 2015 15:37:06
ed002 ,

i have to disagree with you that he is doing everything his agent his telling him , he has been at the club for years now and he has had other agents , he knows this is the wrong way to treat the club and if he wanted to leave he knows he can hand a transfer request in , but one thing that's for sure he is his own man he has a child so to say he is getting bad advice i don't believe it , i think he thinks he is better than he really is and when he does move the reality will set in and he will sack his agent , a lot of wiser people have told him to stay because he is getting game time , stevie has told him as well but he has chosen to ignore his team mates and that has got nothing to do with his agent , this is what gets me with him a lot of people are saying its down to the agent and taking the blame away from sterling at the end of it all no matter what happens sterling still has the final say don't get me wrong his agent is a bad one but sterling knows what's going on and can put a stop to it all at any time he wants

Agree1 Disagree3

{Ed002's Note - He is a child and not a particularly bright one. If you think it is his idea to screw with the club, make arrangements for and give an interview not authorised by the club and, presumably in your view, force his agent to give stupid statements to newspapers about him you are far from correct. As for his team mates, the majority are DFs like him. His agent is what is behind this - he is simply like you and many of the Liverpool fans, gullible and easily led. Lemmings springs to mind.}

27 May 2015 17:02:29

Hi Eds, a question about the site - in the past I think posts that were published here had just made their way naturally to the bottom of the page when other new posts were published until at the end the moved to the banter page 2.

But you could have watched a post and the replies to it for about a day in this page if it wasn't a very busy day. Recently I have noticed that posts and the replies to them appear and then dissapear after an hour or two even when older posts still appear (like with the post Miki1985 or whatever his nick is published earlier today.

Is this the case? Why? if a post was good enough to be published at the first place why it is deleted?

{Ed002's Note - The United States Justice Department does not work quickly and such an issue could take a long time to come to court in the United States. Everything else will be a wait and see what happens situation. The Swiss have acted as a result of information provided by the US which is, I understand, compelling enough for them to begin a separate investigation. The immediate impact will likely be on CONCACAF and on a number of accounts being frozen (certainly any in US Jurisdiction).

The potential long-term impact in Europe will be discussed when a number of clubs meet at the end of August. There is a potential that one (actually up to three) of those clubs could look to have an earlier meeting to discuss the way forward.}

If this turns out to be the case and England get the 2018 WC, could liverpool receive a cash injection to finish the stadium redevelopment ready to host WC games?

{Ed001's Note - that won't happen, Australia have a very real case for legal action regarding the 2022 World Cup, for starters.}

27 May 2015 15:13:53
I have to disagree Ed001, As an Australian, I would love for the World Cup to be played here, but I think that based on our amateurish bid video with stupid cartoon kangaroos bounding all over the place and bloody crocodile Dundee making an appearance, I think that's more than enough to put the kibosh on any legal action LOL.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The Australian legal case would be against the reasons given for the bid not being successful, and probably won't mention kangaroos at all.}

Ed for them to have a legal case for why it was rejected, it has to be a dumb reason right ? The 2022 is quatar, so I'd say Australia was told it would be too hot ? Lol!? what was the reasoning given ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It was because Australia proposed a December to February window and FIFA discounted it because it needed to be in June-July.}

27 May 2015 17:27:48
Is this for the general good of football or the Americans lending a supportive hand for the third time?

Wow Ed, i'm gobsmacked, i was only joking. Surely then as the world cup has been announced for winter, australia should at least get their bidding fee back.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is way more complicated than that - and certainly if it were that simple FIFA would give it back. But incredibly significant payments have already been made by one organization in relation to that tournament that FIFA could potentially get in to a bigger hole if Australia were to win a legal case - and that will be asking for no more than the tender process to be re-run.}

27 May 2015 18:14:28
Once again your'e to kind for the information shared. If you're ever in oxford you'll have to let me know, i could pick your brain for hours! Ill ask only one more question, as I'm sure you're sick of answering me, do you see a re-run for the 2018 and 2022 world cup hosting?

Hi,
All a question for fans aswell as Ed's.
I am a bit confused about the whole Bentekke situation, as an Ed said on another post which I very much agree with
"if your tactics are direct, whipping the ball in to the box at every opportunity, then he will score goals, but pass the ball around and he looks lost. That is why he suddenly returned to form when Tim Sherwood introduced long ball tactics"
I do not understand why we are "reportedly" going to spend 20-30m on him. Now I'm not going to slate the guy in the right team and with the right tactics he can be a really good player but we do not play like that we keep the ball on the floor and pass it around this will obviously not get the best out of him. So why,
Why? I don't get it!!
We have good money to spend on a striker surely we will spend it on a player who is ready made for our system or pretty close. Tekkers just isn't that player imo and I am sick to the teeth of us buying players who just don't work out. Who's genius idea is this? Rodgers?
Committee?
Opinions most welcome from Ed's, If ye feel ye can shed some light and fellow fans also, I can't be the only one left disillusioned at this.

Cheers,

So maybe it is time to start to change how we play?

In any case we will not get Benteke for reasons I have explained in a longer post that made its way to the 'other posts' page, but we will need to make changes to our game for any striker we bring or we face another Baloteli season.

WHO? Jackson Martinez, Heung Min Son, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Carlos Tevez, Luis Muriel, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, Theo Walcott. Most will not come to us. and other than Theo Walcott (who is yet to clarify his own situation).

Benteke is a proven goal scorer and not just some long ball jockey. He has good pace and dribbling stats but outstanding strength and finishing. He is, though, the worst free kick taker around. He would more than likely give us between 15 and 25 goals per season. That said, it doesn't matter what we think as everything is just poor guess work until we hear from official channels what target (if any) we have.

Agree8 Disagree4

27 May 2015 11:16:04
Nevin, we definitely have to add crosses from the wings and have more people in the box when we attack. If it will happen with BR or not I don't know but whichever striker we bring, if we will just keep on trying short passes and go from the centre it will be as easy to defend against us as it was this season unless we bring Messi and Iniesta. I don't think we scored one header from open play this season (other than maybe GJ diving header) and hardly any from corners and free kicks either. I hope even Br understand we need to add this element to our game (though lost many hopes for him).

I must say I have just read that Benteke demand guarantess he is a first striker in any time he will sign for. This actually makes me slightly more optimistic that we may get him eventually. We are the only team of the bigs team who can gurantee him that. If we agreed this with GJ we can defintley do it with Benteke.

Agree4 Disagree3

27 May 2015 11:22:31
Reynard, have you actually seen Benteke play? He is most effective when a long ball is played to him, so yes, he is a long ball jockey in that respect. If he signs I doubt he would get anywhere near double figures. A lot of money badly spent if it happens.

Villa did not play long ball football when they played us off the park. Belgium do not play long ball when he scores for them. You only have to look at the quality of his goals to see that he is more than just a Carew or Heskey. With the players we have capable of creating chances I don't think many teams would fancy facing him.

27 May 2015 12:30:04
Why can't you play a big striker in a good team, you don't need total movement capabilities, if the team passes it around, the big number 9 offers a focal point, and a target to mix things up, especially from the byline not deep, then it's not long ball football!

Check out his goals on YouTube ( I know everyone will say the milkman can look good on there) but you can't make goals look better than they are on YouTube and most were scored in the premier league against premier league opposition ( which is what we failed to do so many times last season) surprisingly not many headers -strange given whenever I've watched him he's always causing problems for defenders with crosses and set pieces. I for one think with a few tweaks to our play he could be a good addition.

So from what I can gather at the moment if we are to sign a striker the most probably or most obtainable would be Ings or mandzukic? Ings we know about being a premier league player but don't know much about mandzukic as I don't watch Spanish football. For those of us that don't watch la liga eds any chance of a brief explanation of what kind of player he is? Or instead, is the player profile page still running and could a profile be made for him?
Thanks eds

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have not said anything like that. I have no idea whether or not the player profile page is running but I certainly don't have the time to describe what players are "like".}

27 May 2015 11:22:52
Mandzukic from what I've seen of him is physically strong, has very good technique, is a proper finisher and good in the air. Only thing against him is his age.

{Ed001's Note - he is not in the running to join us from what I know of him.}

Thanks ed001 I asked the question because ed002 stated further down the page that we showed recent interest in the player in a reply about benteke that's all, I didn't know anything about the player so thought I would ask. If it's a no go then it doesn't matter, thanks though mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he has Champions League clubs that are interested, we are out of the running now we are not in next season's comp.}

No probs that's all we need to know.

27 May 2015 09:11:14
So Khedira is off to Juventus, and idea about Stéphane Mbia Eds? Likely to stay or go? Liverpool ever shown interest?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - (a) Probably. (b) Mbia is moving - but you need to ask on the European pages.}

27 May 2015 13:20:07
Mbia the defensive mid who isn't very good or is there another Mbia?

Agree1 Disagree0

27 May 2015 09:03:47
Eds do you think that a midfielder will be looked at to replace Stevie G, or do you think that we can get Lucas to stay? I think our Midfield is quite good with Henderson, Lucas, Can, Lallana as a 4-4-2 and a diamond with the likes of Ibe at the tip. I think now is time to start to integrate our quality youth players.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has been looking at midfield players.}

27 May 2015 08:20:56
Reports that Benteke is our 'number one target' this summer are disturbing. Eds I'm sorry for asking a money question, but even a general answer to a general question would be great. Roughly speaking, do you think we could get Huguain for a similar amount of money to Benteke?
Thanks a bunch

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - It is never that simple. Many of you have an incredibly naïve view about transfers. "Let's buy him then..."}

27 May 2015 09:19:08
I know it's not simple Ed, a question from my gut instead of my head I suppose, as I think Higuain would be the best signing and Benteke the worst I can't help getting a bit upset by today's 'news.' But thanks for the answer anyway.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - If you want to make a comparison about any potential rekindled interest in Benteke compared to anyone else - try Mandzukic someone who Liverpool has shown very recent interest in. Manduzkic will not make demands for game time - Benteke has already made it clear, through his agent, to two interested parties he wants to be first choice and wants that in any contract. If Liverpool were to rekindle interest, they would need to deal with the baggage to make any transfer viable.}

27 May 2015 09:52:54
Would Mandzukic want champions league though?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - All players want CL but not all can have it. I have simply been explaining where Liverpool has shown interest in players. It is becoming increasingly clear that the people on this page have no interest in that and I am wasting my time. Others, far more attractive, are interested in him as well.}

27 May 2015 11:33:32
Ed is Mandzukic a viable option for us? Would he be interested to play for Liverpool not in the CL? Personally I think he is a great player and we need another striker to come in considering Sturridges injury. Also do you see it being a case of Mandzukic or Ings for example or both being bought?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Mandzukic will be sold this summer as Atletico look to fund a bid for two strikers. Manchester City see Mandzukic as a replacement for Dzeko and it is a solution that perhaps suits all. Liverpool, Milan, Napoli and Monaco also have an interest in the player. "Apparently" (an agent's "apparently"), Manchester United and Arsenal remain interested. Maybe not.

Manchester City are likely to focus their attention elsewhere first, so it makes him viable for other interested sides.}

Typical Spurs!! They are rumoured to have offered 12million for Danny Ings. Have you heard anything eds? Isn't he a free agent next month? What do LFC have to do to get him? Bid more or offer perhaps a big signing on fee? Surely the player has complete control?

Cheers

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - what a load of rubbish. Spurs would not offer £12m for him, they only need to complete a deal with him and his agent, compensation would be nothing like that much.}

Hello Eds.

Eds is there any truth in the Tony Barrett's latest article? It is really worrying situation for the fans as the owner's are making the same mistakes.
1.signing benteke.
2.Signing Milner(which is not what we need at the moment)
3.Planning to keep rodgers and not implementing the structure of DOF.

THANKS

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't read Tony Barrett's article to know what he is writing.}

27 May 2015 07:58:01
Not read it. Milner is no mistake. All ex players, managers etc say having senior pros around, players who have won titles etc are important. Rather Milner running our midfield next to Henderson and Can over Joe Allen.

27 May 2015 08:36:21
Well said Renn. Fully agree about Milner. Good pro, good player. As for Benteke, i would be pleased, i know the eds don't agree but i think he could do a job for us.

Milner is a better ballet than Henderson

27 May 2015 09:30:30
Ed001, if you don't mind me asking for your view, how do you see Milner fitting in? Playing in partnership with Henderson or competing for the same spot? I myself would think they would be competing for the same spot.

Agree0 Disagree1

27 May 2015 10:13:11
I agree Max , these fans saying we don't need milner don't have a clue , if we get him it will be the transfer of the last 2 season's I don't know when fan's on here will learn fan's on here did not want fabregas because some thought and said he was not good enough and he would cost too much in wages and look how well he did for Chelsea its known that he helped them to the title oh well the fans who was against him knew better and now they don't want milner for the same reasons they won't know of how good he was before going to man city the fact is if we don't get him I will be gutted the man will run our midfield he has all the attributes

Agree4 Disagree2

27 May 2015 11:21:45
How about the fact that Milner isn't actually a centre midfielder? He is a winger and a very average one at that, yes he runs around a lot, but what does he offer that we don't have already? Frankly I don't want another square peg in a round hole, we have seen enough of that this season.

If somehow you think a centre midfield pairing of Milner and Henderson is going to paper over that massive hole in our midfield then you are sadly mistaken.

Agree1 Disagree5

27 May 2015 19:01:53
Don`t know where the love-in with milner came from? he is NOT what we need if we wanna go to the next level. We need 2-4 top players because the squad is more than decent BUT he is not one of them. He`s a good pro, experienced, etc. Aren`t Can, Hendo, Lucas, Couts all good pros, talented and hardworking? So why`s he any diff? because he isn`t. Sorry, I did not know that being a good and hard working pro was a quality. It should b a requirement and not a quality. And where is he going to play because he`s a jack of all trades just like Can who`s a better player potentially? We need the right manager and goals from all over the field and we should focus on those instead of dwelling on the arrival of Milner who will add nothing more than what we already have, IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 May 2015 01:13:47
Don't think we're going to hear anything from the owner re Rodgers until after the season review but I do wish they would come out and either back him or sack him so us fans know what to expect through the summer and next season. Really do hope it's the latter though!

Quite a lot of messages came from people close to FSG that BR is safe and staying. People here find it hard to accept so keep on blaming the media of being clueless etc and wait for surprises but you can definitley assume he is staying. Had they wanted to get rid of him they would have done so already.

Agree1 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - nothing has come from people within FSG at all.}

27 May 2015 09:32:57
Fanobip, how do you come to the conclusion that the media know what's going on when FSG, nor LFC have said a word in regards to Brendan being safe or not? Just curious.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The media reported what they were told. This was made clear.}

27 May 2015 19:23:42
The media know nothing because "those within the club" who keeps feeding them speculation and opinions know nothing as well. Why? because they are not close to FSG nor Michael Gordon and his crew. i`ll believe nothing in the media until the press confrence is held with the owners either letting him go or keeping him. till then, CHILL!

Benteke rumours gathering pace now.
It's starting to become a pattern now with Rodgers, he's only able to buy these players who are at lower clubs who would jump at the chance to join Liverpool.
It's last season all over again regarding transfers.
IMO Danny ings is better than benteke and he's on a free, he's quicker, can run in behind and just as good in the air, and he presses defenders all the time.
I fail to see the logic behind buying benteke for what could get close to 30m when there's much better more mobile strikers out there.
GK needs to be sorted out i'd pay whatever Chelsea want for cech or begovic.
Skrtle needs replacing and Lovren isn't the answer.
and RB and LB imo both need improving, flano is injured and Moreno has just been woeful.
These are important positions, which year after year Rodgers fails to see. And just buys attackers.

''Danny Ings is just as good in the air as Christian Benteke''. imagine saying that.

27 May 2015 01:04:41
I don't think we will ever see our defense improve significantly unless we get a defensive coach in or a new manager.

Rodgers has spent the last 3 years playing hungry hungry hippos with various centre backs with Toure, Can, Skrtel, Agger, Carra, Kelly, Sakho, Lovren, Ilori, Wisdom and Jones all at the club and none of them being 'the' solution.

At what point do we just say its the manager and not the players.

Agree6 Disagree0

27 May 2015 03:49:12
Danny ings was too scared to take a penalty to help his side stay up. hardly the mentality we want at Liverpool, if he can't handle the pressure at Burnley what chance does he have at a big club? Whilst I don't think we play to bentekes strengths he would be an infinitely better option that ings. He can defend set pieces ( as well as score from them) and can bully defences and most importantly he can score goals. He's no suarez but we need players that the opposition need to worry about ( as they did with Luis) - Benteke certainly can do that if used correctly ( ie don't let BR play him as a CB)

Agree7 Disagree0

27 May 2015 07:28:29
Benny C. You can buy good players from lower league teams. Its just the scouts jobs to find the right ones. Bertrand for instance, would you have picked him instead of Moreno and save yourself £5 million. Personally i have very little faith in whoever picks our players. So many wrong ones and not just under Rodgers but that is always highlighted when a team isn't doing so well i guess.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - it would have been a saving of about 10m.}

{Ed002's Note - I wasn't - I spent the summer explaining what a good and cheap option he was for Liverpool.}

27 May 2015 09:38:17
dwarf, many here were slating Bertrand needlessly IMO. I myself would have thought that an experienced PL left back, with European experience and CL winners medal would have been an excellent buy. Judging by his performances this season, it seems it was a mistake not to buy him and save 8 - 10 million in the process. I think he is a good player. Though, as Mourinho was prepared to cut him loose, he was deemed crap by many here.

Agree1 Disagree1

27 May 2015 11:18:51
I agree, but people on here tend to gravitate towards exotic last names over homegrown talent. Still a shame that Moreno has been so horribly utilised by Rodgers

I remember the Bertrand posts, I remember Ed002 mentioning he would be a good signing alright.

I was definitely against signing him. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, Bertrand has had his best season yet and he made the PL team of the season. Looking back on it now do I think he would have been a better signing than Moreno? Yes, definitely. Did I think that at the time? I didn't know of Moreno so I never commented on his ability.

If I had the chance to go back my opinion wouldn't change. I didn't want him as I didn't see him as good enough for challenging for titles and regular top champions league quality. I still don't think he's at that level but unfortunately we have gone from 2nd to 6th so challenging for league titles and top champions league quality isn't where we are at.

Having this fool for an agent? Does it put other clubs off buying any of the players he represents. Do they look and see the way he goes about his business and avoid at all costs? I would guess it doesn't mind. Just curious.
