Macca's post got me thinking.
I posted the other day about how I had little doubt Rodgers would be sacked due to a complete failure to meet any targets this season, and I still suspect he will be.
But other than Klopp, who it would be the greatest mistake in the modern history of the club to not pursue, what outstanding candidates are there to take over?

De Boer's been mentioned quite a few times. The fact is he's failed to win a trophy this season with Ajax, which is abysmal. Although the PSV team that has beaten them to the league are a good side, they lost 4-0 at home to Vitesse in the Dutch Cup Fourth Round and dropped out of the Champions League with just 5 points, and then Europa League at the hands of Dnipro.
Moreover De Boer's first would be a season of transition most likely, which I think very few fans could take after this year's disaster.

Rafa's also been suggested and that's just laughable. He's not done well in Italy, has he? Also, despite the idiocy he occasionally shows, when Rodgers has us playing our game, we are very exciting to watch; I for one wouldn't want to return to watching such slow, boring football at Anfield.

Emery seems a much better choice, but that's only been people on here deliberating over who could feasibly be interested.

I would like Phillip Cocu, whose PSV side have beaten De Boer to the title, and would love him to bring Depay with him, but there's been no inclination to suggest he'd be offered the job, and besides he might have other offers he considers more attractive.

My great fear for the summer is we sack Rodgers, can't find a replacement and so appoint Gary Monk, Eddie Howe or any other young manager with no experience of the big time. Although I like both of those two and admire the brand of football they play, it would set us right back 3 years to BR's appointment, and the cycle would start again.

I figure there are probably a hundred managers I've never even heard of who all have a fatter CV than Brendan did when we hired him. He's probably have learned a bit since he's been here, but realistically he's still only got 4 seasons of top flight management and only 7 seasons total of first team management in his entire career. What I'm getting at is it would probably be near impossible to find someone less qualified than Brendan was when we hired him and not trivial to find someone less qualified than he is now.

I understand not changing the manager for someone less superior or a complete change in playing style (although I'm not 100% sure what our style is this year) that means you have to change a lot of players.

But who would be available in January or next summer deemed more superior?

Ibe has been forced on BR and when fit he plays; same occured last season with Flanagan. Some young players will not make it for a variety of reasons; but we shouldn't be buying more than 5 players this season and replacing people that are going to leave / be sold with the youngsters on loan or from the development squad.

I don't think we will get our money back on Balotelli; nor do I think a Sunderland will offer £14m for Borini this summer. There is going to have to be a lot of juggling this year and I can see us selling Sterling (not that I think we should) to balance the books.

Seems a bit harsh on De Boer,
He's a little off the pace this year sure, but it doesn't detractfrom the point he's won 4 of the last 5 eredivisies.

You could easily argue the same as klopp that Dortmund have constantly been in a 2 horse race for the Bundesliga and because of this year,he's a terrible manager.

People will say Klopp had to sell his best players to his rivals and other clubs(lewandowski, goetze, kagawa, sahin, but Ajax have done the same, eriksen, aldeweirald, daley blind, vander wiel, vertonghen,I could go on.

I think to say De boer is having an abysmal season because of a lack of trophies is harsh, when we defend Klopp who is under the same circumstance.

To say you would rather cocu because of 1 good season seems a bit ridiculous to me,especially after taking over psv they went backwards from 2nd to 4th before going 1st this year.

Ajax were already winning Eredvisies before De Boer came along is the difference between him and Klopp, Bobatron. Dortmund were close to bankruptcy and struggling to stay in the Bundesliga.

Ajax won the title in 2010/11 when de boer took over from Jol,they were 4th in the league, they went on to win 4 titles in 5 years.before that they last won the league in 2004,that's a 7 year gap. They certainly were NOT winning titles. when De Boer came along. That's actually just a complete fabrication!! (they were close but they weren't winning.)

Hi Ed

I have kept quiet and watched the season unfold, I must admit when Liverpool went out of the Champions league after playing Real away and fielding a second side I was ready to see the back of Rodgers. However he has redeemed himself a little since. However top managers have ways of finding out systems and that's what has happened to Rodgers recently, the top managers found him out and he is too slow to react.
He blarts out about strikers and the lack of goals but everyone with a football brain knows that's not Liverpools problem. last season we scored over a 100 goasls and didn't win the premiership, This year Chelsea have scored 65 and are 10 points clear. The problem last year as it is with this, is the the amount of goals we concede. You can win the league by scoring just 38 goals. Rodgers has been so naive, until he learns how not to loose instead of worrying of how to win we will have no chance, if Chelsea were in our position last year when they played us then they would have won the league, They would have parked the bus as they did against Arsenal on Sunday and got the draw, However Rodgers went gun ho to win,

Sorry guys but with a Kevin Keegan 2 at the helm we will have no chance.

People would moan if our manager played a defensive solid game as apparently they want the team to play 'the Liverpool way'.

Sturridge and Coutinho wouldn't look as good. Sturridge would only score half his goals (when fit). The stat boys and girls would moan about little assists and low possession, and that's even if the tactics worked.

People are never happy, especially today's supporter, and that includes all club supporters in the league.

Oh yeah, for you to suggest that Liverpool's problems aren't related to the lack of goals scored is simply naive and laughable.

Yes, the manager has got many decisions wrong (and has lost a number of games as a consequence), but any decent striker would be banging in some of them opportunities.

Sturridge isn't the main man now and credit to the manager for addressing that in public. I actually believe that will be a blessing in disguise for Sturridge.

One criticism I do have though is the inability to play our other new signing bench warmers (Lambert and Borini).

I'm convinced both of them would have smashed in their fair share of goals if given the opportunity, regardless of speed or ability.

Instead, we continue to give the Italian opportunities over Lambert who is actually a proven better goal scorer in the league. Not good enough, sure, but proven in the league and what little international games he's played in.

Ridiculous.

Understand what you're saying, but our issue last season was a leaky defense, not this year. Would we have won the league last year with a Carra at CB? Who knows. This year, after losing Suarez and the inclusion of Euro footy, we were never in with a shout, but a few more goals and it's obviousl the 0-0 and 1-1 games could have brought even a further 2 wins and we're up amongst it.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 23:27:23
We lost the league because Gerard isn't a natural CDM and Hendo got sent off with a soft red card at a critical time in my opinion, leaving us exposed when it came to the crunch. A top CB like Carra would have helped but ultimately they were exposed on the counter attack too many times.

My main issue with Rogers this season he tried to completely change the formation and style of Liverpool at the start of the season instead of keeping it simple and trying to build in the base from last year. He hasn't played the diamond at all year, despite being the system that unleashes Coutinho/Sterling as our best players.

Instead we get half a dozen new formations and players constantly out of position including Balo as a lone striker, Can at RB, Sterling as wingback, Gerard as holding midfielder etc. and persist with the likes of GJ, Allen etc.

Rodgers might be potentially a great coach at some point in the future but right now I don't even know what formation we'll be starting with come the weekend, and certainly don't know who will be starting (and not in a good way). Not a great position to be in at this stage of the season and not what you want from a top coach.

So what happens if we draw 38 games!!

Goals and a solid defence win you things , a lot of games this season we have looked like never scoring.

Rodgers knew what he was loosing and never replaced it.

Why I want Unai Emery of Sevilla he took Iago Aspas on loan from us for this season and Aspas has scored 10 goals for Sevilla this season so far. How many did he get for us one against Oldham in cup game is all I can remember. Emery has improved him by BEEFING him up so he is not lightweight anymore which should of been done here, just one instance of how Emery improves players/teams.

Believable2 Unbelievable5

27 Apr 2015 20:12:52
He's got 6 against a 2nd tier club in the Copa del Rey. He's only played 301 minutes in La Liga, scoring 2, so while I like Emery alright it's not like Iago has exactly improved necessarily or rven played all that much for them.

Agree2 Disagree1

27 Apr 2015 20:24:04
He scored 6 goals in 2 games against teams from Spanish league 3 which quality wise is conference at best here in England plus it's in Spain so he's not playing again knuckle headed oafs like here in England. It's nothing to do with the manager the player is bad and he's still bad now

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 20:53:34
It might have helped that Emery actually decided to play the players that he has in his squad, tell Rodgers that if he wanted Aspas to score then he needed to be on the pitch, bearing in mind we did have the two most in form strikers in the league.

Aspas just sat on the bench for a year, I did find it infuriating that he wouldn't even give Aspas 10 mintues at the end when we were winning 4-0.

Agree0 Disagree1

27 Apr 2015 21:31:32
Sorry Bond but Aspas looked very poor last season and as mentioned by RDL 6 of his goals came against a very low team. I've been checking the lineups all season and he has hardly ever started a match.

I wonder would Sevilla even give us £5m for him?

27 Apr 2015 17:14:00
if BR does what he says then what is happening on the pitch, he says one game at a time, fair enough i say but then we get performances in the last 2 games that say other wise, the players are playing like they can't wait for the end of the season, so one game at a time goes out the window, he should be saying we are looking to win our next game/games if the manager can't motivate the players into earning their money each week then something is very wrong wither it be the players or the manager

the papers say another game without a goal even though we had so many shots, why does not BR make the players shoot at goal after training if he does not do this then his training is flawed because they can't hit a barn door at the moment

this brings me to sterling and his contract i know its been done over and over but i'm looking at it from a different angle, why does sterling think he deserves such a huge pay rise, because he does not create much which being a winger he should be doing, then you might say he has been used as a striker ok wheres all his goals for such a pay rise, again they are lacking so in reality does he want such a pay rise on his potential which at the moment he is not improving, no assists and no goals, i know he is our top scorer but that is because he has been set up for most of them by couthino, i think if ballo or lambert or borini had the same chances they would have scored more goals, so basically its down to BR's selection and the way i look at strikers if they are scoring and in form they get more goals look at harry kane, he gets played he is in form and scoring, i really think that its unfair to critisise our other strikers as they have not had a good run in the team, games here and there won't do any player any good and it won't build their confidence, then there's the player playing out of position because BR never bought the players he needed for his formation, so getting a left winger to play at right back does not work

to sum it up a little, BR is at fault for his use of players, sterling is not worth a 100k a week for what he is doing on the field, and we don't have the right players even after all the players we bought, Br must have had a plan in his head about this coming season and what type of players he should buy,

after 3 years BR does not know his best team he is also stuben to the point that even when we are getting beat because other teams have have got on to us and our formation and tactics he will not change them , we have a lot of mediocre players who need to go who he has bought so he can't blame anyone, and these players have come in and gone backwards instead of improving and making the team better

so what do we do with BR its not that simple, we all want different managers to replace him and then we will need the new manager to bed in and his new players to bed in as well, its a tough one for our club because of what i have wrote about how bad BR has done then i don't want him at the club, i believe last season was down to suarez because this season has shown how much we have missed his goals and his assists and all round play, he even made sturridge look better than the player he really is because i don't think sturridge will have another season like last season for one he is too greedy taking mad shots from impossible areas instead of playing in a player who is better places, glory and hunter come to mind, our team is sick and needs to get better by changing a lot of bad habits as in staff and players

Believable2 Unbelievable1

27 Apr 2015 17:57:13
Very sensible post. BR is on the ropes and knows it hence, his double-speak and spinning in the media. Our team is sick as you say Nd the curing and rehab must be done and must start from the top of playermanGement down. We don't need a whole lot but mainly, we need a DOF who will pick a new manager who can then do a proper evaluation of the players . We cannot have the clueless manager evaluating his own squad properly or we will have the same results we are having now.

Hi eds. and reds

Listen, can someone tell me something positive for us going forward! Pretty deflated after the weekend results, any chance is more or less gone.

What i'd really like to know is, do people realistically think that getting young academy players into the squad would work for us successfully? Do ye really think there's enough potential there to help sort the squad without spending if the cash isn't there?

And also, is it just down to Rodgers not giving them a chance to break through. If they were that talented a crop, surely some lad bar Jordan Ibe would have come through. Having said that, we know why he got his chance!

Thanks in advance

There's a fair chance Mignolet will win a Golden Glove, I suppose that's nice.

I would love to see us using more Academy players and more often. Frankly I struggle to think of a time when we've played one and they have let us down and in many cases they've done quite well (Teixeira and Rossiter, as examples), albeit most were ignored thereafter for some reason I still don't understand.

27 Apr 2015 17:19:38
BR has not given enough of the kids a chance of a break through even if he brings them on for the las 15 29 minutes of a game when that is done we will all see how good these kids are and i think some of them have great potential but are still too young the ones that he could have brought through who has potential he keep loaning them out with no intention of playing them in our team when they return , ilori looks a top talent and we know what wisdom can do , but i think these will be sol next season if BR is still in charge , i hope this helps

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 18:08:15
The Midas to be right. You will only know if they are good enuff if you give them a fair chance and not just one game and then off they go. Look at Lyon, for example. Their first eleven is made up of Lacazette, Fekir, Ghezzal, Umtiti, Tolisso, Nje, Lopes are all from the academy. They are on their way to winning the league and now clubs want Lacazette and Fekir and who knows who else. How would they have known they were good enuff if they were not blooded in gradually. We have a very good academy and must be used like we used Flanno, Sterling, now Ibe while guys like Ojo and Rossiter should be given chances gradually. However, BR is not the manager to do that because he has no confidence in them, uses them when no one is available and buys young players to replace or block their development like he bought Alberto for Suso, Manquillo for Kelly and Wisdom and Marko for Ibe who was loaned and now recalled.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 18:35:21
Cheers for the replies guys

A golden gloves award is never something to be sniffed at RDL!
Is it fair to say that BR's inexperience (some would say incompetence) has seen him not have the nerve to trust academy players to do a job for him, and instead spend/waste cash?
If so, it has to count as a serious blind spot. Whatever the summer holds, hope we can regain some hope. It's at a low ebb right now.

The squad we have is good enough to make top 4 and this season has seen us waste another perfect opportunity to get CL football again.

I was under the impression that the teams we should be walking over ( no disrespect to Palace/ Burnley etc) would of had a mixture of youth and the fringe players ie Lambert, Johnson? My thinking at the moment is paranoia has set in? that's why allen gets to play every week? also why he wants hoardings put up wtf? his ramblings and the way the team is set up to bore its way to 90 mins is pretty evident of that imo? No, FSG have got to act come the summer otherwise he will want the dugout turned into a bunker! he is already covering his mouth when he talks? spies to lip read and then txt the opposition what he's said. with all that going on he probably thinks the kids are spies too!

Summer transfers rumours upon us!!lfc linked with every player to ever grace a football pitch(sunday league ones too) everyone guessing who might be leaving or who might be signing. Crazy time of year this summer transfer window & i for one don't be-grudge any if the eds with the constant asking of 'any chance of us signing this. guy'(I will probably be in a long list of many asking who i think lfc will be signing). My question tho is do any of the eds think the english prem to be a busy time this summer? I would expect both Manchester clubs to spend big in the summer & i also think the north london boys(gunners & spurs) to spend a fair few bob too. Fingers crossed we can spend a bit more wisely & get the right people in for the positions we need.

Eds reds lots of talk about what players are comeing in summer window. Firstly money to spend, secondly who we can attract without champions league. If we have money to spend I would go for depay, benteke, jammat, martinez. The second choices would be Konoyplanka, ings, milner, alderweireld.for the amount of money the second choices would cost they may make just as much of an impact as the first list!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

27 Apr 2015 19:02:12
That 'first choice' list isn't realistic at all I hate to say except Jnmaat. Villa would demand £30m now Benteke has hit form, Depay would be ery difficult to get as other teams like Man Utd an PSG-who can offer Champions League football-are both interested. Janmaat is an unusal choice but I'm sure he is feasible. By Martinez do you mean Jackson Martinez or Javi Martinez? Either way, they are both excellent players but again they will have a ridiculous price put on them and they wouldn't come without CL football. Also Jackson Martinez is unproven in a top league which could be too much of a risk considering our transfer record over the years.
However, that 'second choice' list is very realistic! Kono is quality from what I've seen of him and I'd definitely take a punt on him. Ings is a proven goalscorer which is something we could do with at this time; he may have taken his foot off the boil slightly recently but I do not doubt his quality. Milner is a complete beast! An absolute bargain but would he fit in? I think he could so I'd snap him up. Alderweireld looks like a very good prospect for the future but is he ready for the first team? I doubt it and I wouldn't want to hinder his development in any shape or form. Each of these set of players in this second list are realistic and could fit in perfectly.

I believe we must get our priorities straight. We keep asking about players coming in etc etc, when the priority should be the coach/manager. The game on Saturday says it all. Bad tactics and no motivation at all! Does anybody on this site really believes that with our current squad we can't beat West Brom? 6 matches left to play in the season and they all looked like they had given up! And let's not focus on Klopp, for it will take a miracle for him to come

No reason both can't be done in tandem, if a DOF comes in then the two will be mostly separate anyway.

The reason we keep asking about players is because everytime we ask the eds about a DOF/Manager there has been no movement, but there is a little more movement when it comes to interest in players or at least the information is more available.

What a waste of space!
You hover on the edge of excitement.
You reach out and nearly touch the hem of greatness. Then eight months down the line you fall flat on your face and try to put a positive spin on it.
Drawing with West Brom wasn't the end of the frustration, it was just another bus stop on the route to "same old, same old" dreams of futures we have had for the past decade.
Forget the 'nearly had it in the bag' 2014 dream. This year has simply been a glossy version of the past few years - poor signings, throwaway results and poor excuses.

The suggestion today that Sturridge may be out for the rest of the season just highlights why I can't be bothered with England and the games they play. Injured in September 2014 and hardly played for the Reds all season. Yes, players get injured, but what use is England in the context of a Premier League and Champions League battle?

Balotelli, Lambert and Lovren: three poor signings and in Lovren, one that should have worked. I can't believe we have thrown away a fair salary in the past year on Lambert when we could have recruited younger players. The salary of a benchwarmer is wasted unless we can be sure he can change a game when he comes on. That was never going to be the case with Lambert.

Lovren: what has gone wrong or did it go wrong before we bought him? Shone on the coast but seemed positively overwhelmed in a big pool. I preferred Kolo Toure to him as at least he would fight for every ball. His performances have been major let-downs and I question the purchase rather than the player. No matter what the manager says, it does NOT take nearly a whole season for a player to settle into a club.

Balotelli: the manager bragged he would have a real go at bringing the best out of him. That has long since gone. When other managers despair and throw up their hands, it is for a reason. Bravado and blind faith are no substitute for making the right call with advice.

I have supported the team since the early 70s but the past decade has been empty and promising much only to fail every year. I see no reason for this to change. Blind faith is no way to press on. We are no longer great but just a big club. We are as big as Arsenal and Chelsea and more glorious than City and Spurs and a step below United. Our history is our undoing - we rely on telling people we have 5 European Cups as they buy smartly, win consistently and smile at us. Wake up!

Agree that Balo and Lambert were very poor signings but the rest like Markovic, lallana, Moreno and Can will come good as long as we get in a proper manager who brings out the best in them.

I have been playing the same drum about defence but look at how important John Terry has been for Chelsea. Fantastic defender. One of the slowest in the game but reads the game exceptionally and communicates with his defence who listen to him.
I reckon had we had a terry type defender we would have challenged more and won atleast one title. Fantastic leader and player.

You have to also give credit to the coaches he has had especially, under Mou who preaches a well defensive shape into his players, which shows that defensive shape and discipline in NOT "uncoachable", like one manager keeps saying in abid to hide his inability to make his defence much better over the three years he's been coaching some club on Merseyside.

No, this is the same defense that has let in 177 goals in 153 games in the past 3 years in all competitions. That's an average of more than goal a game and over a three year period nothing has improved. Not only do we concede lots of goals, we also look poor defensively, have shifted around plenty of players in defensive positions, and still haven't at any time looked solid and a team capable of defending properly for the 90 minutes.

Just been thinking on the transfer committee front. If it's just aload of Rodgers sat there then there isn't much point is there? For me you need one guy running transfers, then you know who to boot put the door when it goes wrong.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

27 Apr 2015 13:57:01
Exactly! The committee was a calamity and should be scrapped. However as the Eds have said, Rodgers is part of said committee and he has the power to stop transfers he does not want hence, the idea and excuse people give that the committee dictates to him who comes in, is ludicrous and unfounded. Then, again I don't blame them for that because he never takes responsibility for anything so I can see why they might think he has no control.

27 Apr 2015 14:26:52

FSG and Rodgers collectively in my opinion.

Jonny

At the end of the day, our committee had a shortlist containing the likes of Costa, Mkhitaryan, Willian, Sanchez, Remy, Bertrand, Huntelaar etc etc. Just saying so it is not like they were not scouting players that bwere wanted by other clubs.

At the end of the day, Rodgers had the last say and could have said yes to Remy instead of Balotelli. How on earth can FSG be held accountable for decisions on transfers?

They can be held accountable for appointing Rodgers but not the decisions Rodgers has made and is exactly why FSG will be sacking Rodgers. At least FSG will be learning from their mistakes by getting rid of Rodgers. If they keep him as manager then yes, they need to be hold accountable for not trying to fic a failed plan.

You failed again, Johnny. The owners don't pick the players and based on the Eds info (if you have better, more accurate info on this issue, please share. If not, keep it moving), he signs off on any signings and he said himself, "no player will come in here that the manager doesn't want". He said that in May. If all you have are opinions, save them. If you have facts to debunk those I posted, I'm listening.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 21:17:55
We should have taken into account more than just the player's stats.
Looking at Balotelli from a stats point of view he is not a bad signing for the price we purchased him for.
But we all know that there is so much baggage to consider other than the player's ability.
That is the point I was making in reference to Moneyball.
You don't just look at a player's price to stats ratio.
There are many more things to consider.
Why have I failed again Red?
In your world the owners don't do much.
Which begs the question "why spend so much money on buying the club in the first place if they are not going to make sure that every decision made is scrutinized from the very top down?

Good to see Ed002 trying to explain how we and Rodgers/TC has fail on the field. when we had the ffp muscle we mishandled it or a different manager may still bring out the best from the current crops of squad. a good manager would still utilise Gerrard to the best of effect for the club. as the Ed002 said Rodgers is more a PR figure than a manager, he is the cause of every sticks that he gets from the fanbase. i hope the rumours of De Boer or Rafa is true, looking at the former records i wouldn't frown upon him being our next manager, 4tittles in an underrated league by being a feeder club to european big spenders. i hope the owners would not lure to his BR sweet talks.

It is highly unlikely that Rafa will ever manage LFC again. Since leaving LFC he has not gone one to wow the footballing world.

There is a difference between winning the Europa League by being knocked out of the Champions League and having to start the Europa League from the group stages and then working your way from the bottom to win it. Rafa has also twice shown that he is not good enough for the EPL and has not only wasted loads of cash at LFC but also at Napoli.

They say never look back and one thing is for sure, FSG when they sack Rodgers would have picked up on many things since buying LFC and one of those things is fan sentiment. FSG would be digging their own grave if they appoint Rafael Benitez as in the eyes of the fans (well those who worship Rafa) Rafa is like a god and can do no wrong. FSG will not be thinking of putting themselves in a situation where one individual can bring them to their knees. Sentiment luckily is not anywhere near FSG's vocabulary.

Rafa to LFC ain't happening.

Rodgers was given 250 million to spend and spent and wasted the 250 million he was given.

Again in August a number of clubs will gather to discuss rules, capping certain income for FFP and, in particular, the pan-European breakaway - which two very powerful clubs want to happen as soon as possible now. Fortunately the other clubs won't be bullied but the owners will be aware that eventually Liverpool could be impacted by that. Chelsea has/had the luxury of making mistakes, we don't. So spending 20mil on Matic, a player who sold 10x less in previous years was a huge gamble that paid off. Gunner, he was the man because he was winning and had he not succumbed to his arrogance we would have won the league. Many fans of your own club wanted Wenger fired last season and had he not won the FA Cup, he prolly would have so you know a lot more about this type of practice than we do because to many of your fans, Arsene is the man till he loses the next game(s). Now, questioning the parents as in this case, the owners is a low blow at them because they want to win and had to invest to win so trying to blame them is harsh and disingenuous on your part.

There really is few top strikers in Europe who are viable.
Benteke might be strong and have hit some form but I do not rate him as being good enough. He would be another expensive disaster.
Mandzukic maybe but I don't think we are interested. Ings looks the likeliest. It's really up to the scouts to find the talent.

I fear a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they see Origi next year. He is a 3rd choice striker at best.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - And Vietto?}

27 Apr 2015 13:27:24
EMS, As I said previously I think Ings and Origi will be fighting over the same playing time. To me it has to be one or the other and we already own one of them. I read an article today where Ings said he didn't want to step up and take a penalty for Burnley and miss it through fear of not wanting to be responsible for confirming their relegation. If he doesn't want to or can't step up for Burnley, I can't see him making the step up to Liverpool. As Ed002 has alluded, I would much rather LFC make a massive play for Vietto to play with and without Sturridge, than see Danny Ings.

I believe Liverpools way forward is to promote from within with what we already have here in the academy. Its what I want to be our next manager's main charter. Promote from within first, then look to buy. Though Ironically, I am sure BR was tasked with this anyway.

27 Apr 2015 13:15:47
I think we'll sign Vietto or Ings Ed. Surely not both?

They're both similar in terms of development though so Ings is a lower risk option in my opinion. I personally think Ings is vastly under rated. 35 goals and 12 assists in his last 2 seasons. He's also made nearly 80 appearances in that time which rubbishes the injury prone myth.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not so sure EMS.}

27 Apr 2015 15:52:21
Ings for me is a no brainer. Already has good talent with a lot of potential for improvement too. If he wants to join then sign him up, it's a gamble worth taking in my opinion. However I wouldn't think we would look to sign just one single striker especially if Ings is a small fee paid. I believe Ed said we are interested in Gameiro too and if that fee is not too steep I would be delighted with signing him. Obviously a lot can change between now and summer but I'm not too worried, surely we can't get it tremendously wrong yet again!

Here are the facts:

ManUre's net spend in 2014 was £125.5 (£60.1M in 2013) whereas ours was £39M in 2014 (£23M in 2013). Same?

Agree4 Disagree3

{Ed002's Note - The difference is that they can afford it and are not breaching FFP - whereas Liverpool suffers complete financial mismanagement and has a manager who in both years pissed the money up the wall. This is again why we try and avoid discussing finances - most of you simply don't get it.}

27 Apr 2015 11:03:49
It's probably because he is British. You also see the same media fawning over Harry Redknapp and Tim Sherwood, and in the not so distant past, Martin O'Neil and Paul Lambert.

SF you cannot be serious with net spend.
United pull in huge revenues and have huge sponsorship deals.
Whether it is nET spend or not Rodgers spent 250 million. It doesn't matter if it's not spend or not he still has spent 250 million. I think you are missing the point.

Agree5 Disagree4

27 Apr 2015 11:17:33
Doesn't matter what we spent net, we spent the gross amount( over 200 mil in 3 years) the players we have aren't bad but what's the point in buying them If a) we already had cover in most of the positions we bought b)Rodgers then plays them out of position the few chances they're given. Now we have shed loads of players out on loan or in reserves that are worth sweet FA. We'll take losses on all of them just to raise enough cash to buy one first team player.

Does Rodgers have complete control over transfers then?
If he does then does that not show FSG up as incompetent as well?
They signed him up?
They even decided against a DOF because they wanted him so badly.
And on top of that they have given him millions to "piss up the wall"
Is that not a case of the blind leading the blind then?
Because the theme is that Rodgers has pissed money away.
And whether you agree with that theme or not, do FSG not deserve criticism for giving Rodgers, who everyone including FSG knew at the time was a rookie manager, all that money in the first place?
Without putting in place a sound structure of scrutinizing every transfer decision?
They wanted a young manager with a vision for the future of the club.
They chose Rodgers, but it now looks like after choosing him they said "here is a load of money" get on with it.
That is unbelievable naivety on their part in my view.
You can't have it both ways.
You can't accuse the manager of "pissing 250 million against a wall" without asking the question "why did FSG allow a rookie manager to piss 250 million against a wall"?
Just to add.
I don't think we have totally "pissed" that money away.
Sahko,Coutinho,Mignolet,Sturridge,Moreno,Markovic and Lallana are all good buys in my opinion.
Maybe even Lovren will come good so it's not all doom and gloom but if there is criticism to be levelled at the manager then there has to be a certain level of scrutiny of the people above the manager as well?

Agree5 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - FSG will be well aware that they have made mistakes appointing certain personnel, Rodgers, Comolli, Dalglish, Jen Chang etc. but are far from culpable in terms of transfers - they have added to transfer committee to help Rodgers out and I have explained I think needs to be done to start straightening things out. The players Rodgers has purchased have not given any on field success at all. Whist your anal defence of Rodgers is admirable it is becoming tedious as you are now trolling posts. Rodgers needs to go if Liverpool want any sustained success.}

27 Apr 2015 12:42:11
How am I trolling posts ed?. I reply to posts.
If that is trolling then I am guilty as charged.
I am off work today and bored.
I thought that a great way to spend a bit of free time was to come onto this site.
I am not defending Rodgers either.
Well I am to a point.
My position is clear.
In my opinion Rodgers has not been a complete disaster as you and many others on here claim that he has been.
I don't think that is an unreasonable position to have.
If Klopp is attainable then I would go and get him now.
There is, however, part of me that feels like even accepting his mistakes that Rodgers does deserve another season.
I don't think that it is unreasonable to be torn between this season and last season in terms of Rodgers.
Maybe that is looking through rose tinted glasses, who knows.
In terms of winning things I would agree with your assessment that he has failed but I would also argue that finishing 2nd last year was meeting the target of qualifying for the champions league.
That is a success is it not? If you meet the target set out?
I don't really know why you are having a go at me to be honest.
All I am doing is taking part in the debate.
That is what this site is about.
I reply to everyone's posts.
I am a frequent poster, Is that not what you want?
I really object to you calling me a troll or accusing me of trolling posters because the connotations behind that word are very unpleasant.
I am not a bully or a troll and I think you have overstepped the mark on that ed.
But I won't return the favour.
I won't rise to your bait.
My only crime is not agreeing with you.
All I am doing is giving my opinion just like everyone else on here does.
If you don't want me to give my opinion then you can just tell me.
I would rather that than you trying to imply that I am some sort of bully.
That is bang out of order.

I think that while there have been some poor signings, every club has them and we've had some great ones too.

My biggest problem with Rogers isn't so much the players he's signed but his failure to buy for the positions we really needed meaning players often being played out of position (eg. Markovic, Llalana, Can) and making it even harder to adjust and play their natural game.

I also think his formations and selection choices have been inconsistent, which hasn't helped anyone settle. The new signings have often been hooked at the expense of Gerard, Allen, GJ etc. who have had poor seasons, undermining confidence (especially Llalana/Markovic).

I genuinely think Lovren, Llalana, Can, Balo, Markovic, Moreno all had more to give than we managed to get out of them this year largely because of how they were played.

"There's going to be a whole raft of players that I'm sure will be looked at and then it will be up to the club if they're affordable and available."
Great confidence boost for players who are low in confidence and have been used incorrectly.
Too many fans pine spending spending spending forgetting how appallingly we have spent and are blinded by this man. In another club he would be pushing them into administration. The keys to the candyshop and his job need taken away when the season ends

Just need the rite man to lead them.

27 Apr 2015 10:54:52
Ino jay I do believe he will be gone though this summer, I would be astounded of not. He doesn't justify another season.
Lavers, yes mate we do. He is just out of his depth. That squad should have been comfortably in top 4. Under the right man' and 3 positions in the first adequately corrected (GK, ST,AND Cm) we would be challenging next season. We need atleast one of those signings to be a leader. Look at John Terry fantastic player and leader.
I have no clue as to why we have shown no interest in petr cech. And the players the eds have confirmed we have interest in are worrying.

Agree2 Disagree1

27 Apr 2015 10:55:56
100% agree with Lavers, we have a very good squad missing just a few quality players. With the right coaching, and a manager who can adapt tactics to our opposition, whoever that may be, we can be challenging every season. Squad overhaul after squad overhaul does not provide the settled consistent team that we need. We have a young squad who given another season to gel just adding one or two new additions at a time could set the league alight again like we did last year.

Agree2 Disagree1

27 Apr 2015 11:22:40
Good one Brendan, isn't that the mistake we made last year? What he should have been looking at was 3 or 4 first team players. We may have made CL and would be in a position to add just a couple more class players this season. Prime example of him being incapable of learning.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 12:11:55
I don't understand what everyone is complaining about. Buying players who are "not yet the complete package" and hoping they develop into that complete package is always going to be more miss than hit.
5 years from now i'm sure some ofthose player that we've bought will become very good players. But it can't happen if they get 5 minutes of playing time here or there, or if they are played out of position or the fans get on their back and confidence is reduced.

We either pay top dollar for recongnised and ready stars (which I don't think we can afford) or we accept the reality of our situation.

Cheers

Fair points red Ted but we could afford it last year. Instead of 3 or 4 ready stars we bought 9 that could be good. I don't mind most of the buys- just that they were not what was required at the time. The time to spend on 9 'chances' is when you're flush with cash and already have a top first team. Hey Eds n Reds. So as we all know, this summer there will have to be a large number of players leaving as we have a crazy amount of players on our books. So for me i'm thinking that a summer that has 13 outs and 4 ins would be ideal.

Outs - Borini, Ballotelli, Lambert, Sterling, Gerrard, Manquillo, Toure, Coates, Aspas, Alberto, Johnson, Jones, Allen

Ins - Vietto, Neto, Hughes, Depay

I would love to bring in Higuain as our main striker but i'm sure he is out of our reach. Also because i'm under the impression that we will be going for talented young players with high potential. I would have Wisdom and Flanagan as our right back options and i would also keep Ilori as long as he is going to be given oportunities. 4 strikers out and 1 in might sound extreme but if we have something like Sturridge, Vietto, Origi, Sinclair. that would be fine with me. it is probably more likely that Allen will stay and Lucas will leave but i think having Lucas and Emre Can as our "defensive minded" midfielders would be the better option. So that's my wrap up. i'm sure people will have there own opinions and disagree. Dnt get me Wrong, Pedro, Higuain, Vidal, Czech and Varane would be exciting lol. but for me this is a much needed summer and with the players coming in, going by the "young talented players with high potential" model. Hope all is well Eds n Reds

We need to keep lucas at all cost and especially when you see 5mil being quoted for him , doesn't make any sense what so ever.

Don't think we really need to look at hughes to be honest , we have enough young players in that position and also we need to move can into midfield and stop playing him in defence.

Think the money we have needs to fund the best striker which we can get.

Completely agree on Lucas! We're absolutely hopeless when he's not playing! He should be offered a new contract and the vice-captaincy to show him how much he's appreciated and wanted. But as it looks like Rogers will probably stay, he'll no doubt bugger that up, like everything else!

Agree2 Disagree2

27 Apr 2015 12:48:22
His objective during his first season was finish in Top 4 - failed. In the second season, was to challenge for the title - achieved, win a trophy - failed. His objectives for this season was: Challenge for the title - failed, win a trophy - failed, a good run in the CL - failed.

So that's 5/6 failures if you are happy if that, keep up this incredible strange defense of Rodgers' failures.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Apr 2015 13:04:57
2nd season aim was to challenge for the league?
Really.
That was not the objective.
It was a top 4 finish.
It became an objective because the team did really well.
I am just after a bit of balance AG.
If Rodgers goes then he goes.
I am not in love with Rodgers.
But I don't think he has been awful either.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I think people have forgotten how bad Hodgson and Souness were if they think Rodgers is our biggest mistake. Rodgers has not done well enough with the resources at his disposal, but he is not the worst we have had.}

27 Apr 2015 14:23:59
I am just as frustrated as everyone else at the way this season has gone.
I along with most people thought that this season we would at least be challenging for the league.
How wrong was I.
And even this year when we have been on the cusp of clawing back something from our terrible start we have then shot ourselves in the foot.
If Rodgers were to stay on next year that would be my biggest fear.
"Are we nearly men under this manager"?
You have to say yes at the moment.
And if he was to be sacked in the summer then that would be where I would place his time at Liverpool. Nearly.
But Hodgson was a "not even in the same stadium" manager when compared to Rodgers.
I suppose that is the feedback I am getting on this site.
There are those who think time is up for Rodgers and those who think another season is about right.
I would not even promise the whole of next season if he were to stay.
I would look at the league after 6-10 games and if we are not at the top or near the top then I would yank him out.
I can't stress enough how important I feel it is to sell everyone we don't want before buying anyone regardless of who is in charge.
We have to take stock of what we have and what the future is for players already with us before signing anyone else.
If that means we miss out on Depay then so be it.
That is why I am getting twitchy already because the rumours have started about buying players when we have about 10-13 players who we need to move on.
It is gross mismanagement.
Is that Rodger's fault?
If it is then maybe it is best he goes.
Clear the decks of the playing staff.
Clear the decks for the management? Yes if we can get Klopp and no for anyone else.
That is my position.

27 Apr 2015 14:50:34
I agree Ed, sourness was a disaster but was left with an aging squad but got shot of too many key players too quickly. He lasted 3 years in an age where managers were given far more time. Hodgson also inherited a dodgy squad but seemed to think draws were wins and losses were draws but at least we got rid fairly quickly. BR had 3 years and an awful lot of money which is why is up there in terms of disasters!

He failed first year but succeeded in year 2.
In year 3 it looks nailed on that he will fail with the same objective.
Or to put it another way, If we were in the top 4 right now then I don't think the majority of people on this site would be asking for him to go.
At the moment I think the majority do want him to go.

Eds, what's the rush of PSV to get rid of Depay? He is the top scorere in the Dutch leage, scored 21 as a playmaker, one of the big dutch stars of the future, are there any issues with him?

I can see how, if the player is desperate to leave, they may be willing to cash in on him, but it seems they are almost happy to get rid of him. 3-4 of the biggest teams in Europe are chasing him, they could have used it to raise his price hugely and yet there is a mention of 20M, which sounds like a huge bargain for this kind of scoring record by a midfielder in a good European league (Bony was bought for 30 millions I think), and all this almost two months before the transfer officialy opens, before most league ended. Are there any issues there?
