Noticed our name linked with Antoine Griezmann the other day. He's been doing really well in Spain recently, and imo would be a better option than Konoplyanka. Do the Eds think he could be on our radar? He's definately gettable, playing for Sociedad, I doubt his wages would be ridiculous either.

P.S Another winger linked, Viktor Fischer, has had an op on his hamstring. He'll miss the start of next season. So i'd imagine that rules him out as a target.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No. Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Marseille, Rennes, Fiorentina and Lyon have shown some interest in Griezmann in the past year and repordedly Barcelona tool a look at one time. Whilst the kid has said on several occasions that he has no plans to leave Spain anytime soon, the financial problems being faced by Real Sociedad may still see him leave the club in the summer. He has had a good season which have led to enquiries being made by Juventus, Arsenal and Chelsea; and Manchester United and PSG having the player watched on more than one occasion.

Viktor Fischer has been subject to recent interest from Milan, Manchester United, Manchester City, Roma and Werder Bremen. Ajax has negotiated a new contract with him but might let him leave as, when fit, he has not been performing at all well. There is a suggestion that Liverpool might be interested but it remains unconfirmed although they have certainly taken a look.}

Ed02,

With Barcelona's embargo being suspended the noises coming from Barcelona seem to be mass exodus. Obviously they have Puyol & Valdes leaving, however it also seems that Pedro, Mascherano & Sanchez will likely follow as well.

With Liverpool actively looking for a wide forward this summer, do you think it's conceivable that we will look at either Pedro or Sanchez as possible players to come in? I would also love Mascherano, but he looks Napoli bound.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I think Tello is higher up the list.}

Why would we want Masher? He's 29 and on a fortune. We need a younger DM to be eased in as Gerrard & Lucas are doing fine.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think an easier question to answer is why wouldn't we want Mascherano. Still world class in the right position.

Simonpw,

Re your Arsenal post.

I think its achievable as long as you beat Chelsea this weekend, come on mate do us a favour, lol.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Trying to stay away from your page Dags. People seem to frown upon it.

Anyways, I feel super strange about this one. I feel it could go 0-0, or we could blow em out. Either one of those results wouldn't leave me too upset.

Liverpool U21s will face Manchester United at Anfield in the U21 national play-off semi-finals on Friday, May 2, at 7.45pm BST.
Alex Inglethorpe's side qualified for the play-offs to determine the overall national champions after finishing second in the Barclays U21 Premier League 2pts behind Chelsea.
Last season the young Reds lost at this stage when United beat them at Old Trafford, so Inglethorpe's charges will be hoping to go one better this time.
The other semi-final will see Chelsea face either Fulham or Man City. Fulham currently hold 4th place yet City can replace them if they win their final game on goal difference. City play Aston Villa on Sunday 27th at the Etihad knowing a win will earn them a trip to Stamford Bridge.

I can't believe that Mourhino's mind games have worked on here so much. Mourhino is a winner, he hates to lose, don't believe for one moment that he won't field a side on Sunday that he believes will give Chelsea the best chance of winning.

This will be the toughest of games, we will have to be at the very top of our own game on Sunday to get a result. Rodgers I am sure will be warning his squad at every opportunity to keep calm and fully focused and to avoid any of the injuries that may 'appear' to be in our favour.

We may lucky and have Sturridge back, but we are missing Hendersons energy and passing in the middle of the park, I don't know the answer to that problem, Lucas sadly hasn't the pace, maybe with Sturridge back, Couthino could do a job replacing Henderson

Come on Redmen, We have been waiting many years to be in this position, now let's not get carried away with trickery, but stay focused and win the game

WE GO AGAIN!

It has put the game into perspective for me, considering he was only 45 years of age and the Barcelona manager just 12 months ago - tragic.

Very, very true my friend.Look as the saying goes it's only a bloody game.I lost my dad the same way and it's horrible.
Respect to all Barcelona fans out there at this sad time.

For some reason this passing in the game has struck me, I think it has to do with his age and career opportunity with the great Barcelona.

I do not usually get affected by a death in the football family but Tito's passing has brought about a reaction from me I never thought I would have.

To anyone who has any info how has Ryan Mclaughlin been progressing/how do the club see him developing. I've always been confident that he will become an unbelievable player and would love to see him given a couple of chances next season especially in pre season and early cup matches. I think we've seen with Flanno the importance of game time seeing as the club were looking to loan him out and now people were upset he wasn't called up to the national squad. So yeah any information on Ryan at all would be appreciated.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Apr 2014 16:58:17
He has been decent for Barnsley, but he is in and out the team because I think he is pretty injury-prone so gets little niggeling injures. I think he would be a brilliant RW in the future. With Flanagan or Wisdom behind him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Injuries have affected him this campaign, so much so that at one point he came back to LFC and do some work, even playing in a reserve game.

He also plays for a side struggling to stay in the Championship, but to be fair, he has shown his attacking qualities whenever he has played.

Dunno about everyone here but like stats myself and there are some interesting stats about the boast of Sturridge being fit for sunday.

http://tinyurl.com/mf2smho

not a great site but interesting article, know stats are misleading and Saurez drops deeper against bigger teams and tends to create a lot more assist in the big games. But still a positive sign have Sturridge back! (hopefully)

25 Apr 2014 15:36:21
Think he will be in best case scenario just on the bench. And Suarez absolute best performances this season came when he was alone upfront. So opinions and shopinions. Facts don't lie.

25 Apr 2014 12:54:22
i really don't understand why we should not go for marco rues, his available, the price would be high but he will be worth the money, he is what we need and to be fair I don't even think we need that many more new players, we only need to bring back the loan signings, give back the loan signings we have, sell aspras, coates, llori ( as he doesn't want to wait for his chance) sell and replace brad jones sell reina.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Because we cannot afford him unless we seel Suarez.

We can't just keep spending money that we don't have.

We will probably let Moses and Cissokho go, sell a few of the players out on loan and then sign a left back, a centre mid and a versatile forward. Other than that we will only sign people as replacements for those leaving. This current team is very likely to win the league. The starting line-up is only really short of a left back (Flanno is great, but he's naturally a right back and still only young). Other than that we just need to shed some weight in the centre back department and bulk up the squad with a couple of signings plus some returning loan players.

We don't need to spend big money.

I guarantee you our net spend this summer is less than £30m.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea, Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal showed an interest in Marco Reus before his return to Dortmund last year. Recent tentative approaches made by Chelsea and Manchester City have resulted in a "not for sale" response. Manchester City may push again but Dortmund seem to no longer be looking at Dzeko as a possible replacement for Lewandowski, so the option to offer favourable terms on the transfer or a contribution to his salary may well have gone. Interest from Manchester United remains quite speculative right now - 2015 might be a more likely option if the club do well - but should the player become available before then they may well look to bid. Dortmund will not want to sell and a move this summer seems unlikely - although Barcelona will be looking to rebuild this summer and could potentially try and put an offer on the table - but right now that does not seem to be the case.}

Ed I know you hate ..................

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I really don't want to go there.}

Ibe is just one of many players on loan at Birmingham. As for Robinson, he is just a very average player, and quite the thug like Ed001 says. It can't help having people like him in the squad when youngsters are brought into the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ayre has stated we have got money to spend even with developments to the stadium taking place. as well as this I thank the owners for helping us so much, the position we are in would not be true right now if it wasn't for them.

going back to Marco Reus I understand that we mostly likely not going to sign him, but I don't understand why we can't compete with players of his quality because we have got the money there to spend. instead we go for players such as tello ( not saying his a bad player) but the quality of Reus and tello are very much different

Agree0 Disagree0

I think your mistake is assuming 'we have got the money there to spend'. By what logic do you come to such a conclusion?

Agree0 Disagree0

Woah, looks like I replied to the wrong post. Apologies everyone.

Agree0 Disagree0

What makes you think this much talked about "money to spend" is significant enough to buy and pay wages and all the other extra costs for Marco Reus?

He is an excellent player and the type of player a team like us would love to have. I can only assume we have not looked at him because the club realizes he is not affordable.

Agree0 Disagree0

And do you have any idea how he would fit into the team?

What position would he play, given we have Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling?

And Suso coming back, and Ibe knocking on the door.

How much would he cost? 40? 50 million?

How much would want in wages? 200k a week? More?

Would he care, or go on strike, like the Man U or Spurs players this season?

We are a loss making club, that is just now starting to get on an even keel. I don't believe this is the way forward.

Develop players like Sterling, and look for opportunities like Sturridge and Coutinho.

And let BR and the coaching staff do the rest.

Just my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

EMS "guarantees" our net spend is less than 30m so why doesn't everyone just listen to him?

Morning fellow reds and Eds.
Still cannot believe the position we have got ourselves in regarding the league, it has been a great transformation.
Moving forward I think we need to find 2 or 3 quality players (not back ups) to keep us challenging next season as that will be tougher than this campaign with Champions league added into the mix. And with some of the youth added that are coming through we should have a stronger squad.
Would not like to guess who the Liverpool scouting network are looking at but I am sure they will find the right players at the right price because of the FFP restraints which the Eds have explained perfectly on here.
Cannot wait for Sundays game and hopefully will get another finger on the trophy.

Keep up the good work Eds and I for one really appreciate the work you do.

We go again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Completely agree. Was in the pub with a mate a couple of days ago and what you've said it exactly what we were discussing and agreeing on: 2-3 quality players, utilisation of our youth system. If we find the right couple of players without losing any major personnel we'll be in a strong position for next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Apr 2014 15:58:09
What I like about your post mate is that you haven't suggested 10 outs and 10 ins. It seriously does my brain in why so many people can't be more realistic. 2-3 starters will be fine by me. The players who don't play so often doesn't need to cost 8 million each and take the places of really promising youngsters like Jordon Ibe, Rossiter and Jack Dunn, I would rather see Dunn getting minutes in the cup next year rather some striker who cost 10 million who f.eks plays 2nd fiddle to Sas. In a worst case scenario CL is just 6 more games. Really lame excuses those PL managers come up with.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with all the above posts. Personally though I think we may have upto 6 new players due to other fringe players leaving - still I'm hoping 3 of the new players are deemed 1st 11 players or thereabouts.

I think League Cup will be a 2nd 11/youth players next year and FA Cup will depend what cups and current league position.

Love us to win the Champions League but would hope that's because we're in it the following year as well based upon our league position.

I don't put much stock in the papers banding about, 60/70m transfer kittys but I remember reading a while back about a clause in the standard charterd that if we qualified for the CL then they would release more money, is this true?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No, it is the other way around. If Liverpool failed to qualify they would pay £5M a year less.}

So if we qualify, they pay £5 million more than this season?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No, They don't pay £5M less.}

You're always confusing us by talking about money Ed2.
As a fan I don't see why we would be bothered. It's up to Ayres and his team to sort the finances out. I don't think Brendan has needed to lash out a huge amount so far.
Progress in the champions league will mean more than what Standard Charter gives us in my opinion. We might need a couple of players at most but there are a few who could go too.

Question for eds or general people;

Has anyone got an update on young Jordan Ibe? How is he getting on at Birmingham?

Cheers.

3 more games!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I think the best thing to do would be to go and read the comments from Birmingham's head of their ultras, sorry left back, he just plays like a thug, Paul Robinson. He has suggested the loanees have let the club and manager down. Other than that, I am not really sure, he started off brightly.}

Thanks for the swift response 01.

I will indeed research the ultras, sorry left backs comments.

Agree0 Disagree0

Paul Robinson also questioned the loanees love for the game and suggested that they didn't really care about what happened at Birmingham - If this fella was your captain if would be easy to understand the apathy towards Birminghams cause, he sounds like an unpleasant character and player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Club captain, currently serving a suspension for picking up 15 yellows. maybe he should look in the mirror before pointing fingers about letting the club down?

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Apr 2014 00:05:32
just because he's a bit of a thug on the pitch doesn't mean he's not allowed to question the desire of his team mates

Agree0 Disagree0

No, but a lot of the loaness are youngsters getting their first taste of high level, competetive football: the onus shouldn't be on them to save Birmingham, the seniors players should take responsibility for both performances and motivation of the squad - it looks like a ploy from the club captain to deflect attention from him and his mates at the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

What kind of a club blames loanees for their league position? Bizarre.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, had to reword it a little though. My condolences to your family mate. P.S. No idea the voting is anonymous.}

25 Apr 2014 09:19:57
Hi Zed's,

Really like today's poll, and glad most people would rather lose Suarez than Rodgers (not that anyone would want to lose either) at least so far with 20 votes or so. It's the whole "give a man a fish vs teach aman to fish" analogy IMO, as great managers have shown that players come and go, but a footballing dynasty endures with the right principles in place.

If we are able to suggest future quiz questions, I would love to hear if other users would have liked to see Carra given the opportunity to earn the 10 appearances necessary to get the one missing medal in his collection this year (IF we win it, one game at a time etcetc!). I personally would not, as much as I love the guy, as it would undermine the achievements of the other squad members, even though, I do feel that the defensive General could've made the appearances on merit during this season if he had not chosen to retire.

Z

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think it would be great for Carra to go running onto the pitch at the end of NUFC game whilst stripping off his suit to reveal a wonderfully tight green Candy kit and join in the celebrations, 10 apps or not!

Hi Ed's,

Would you happen to know if 59,000 is the maxiumum capcity or if going forward, let's say in the next 10 years there will be a possibility for even more of a capacity increase. I know its a little bit of a crystal ball question so apologies if I sound slightly dumb asking but I was hoping you may be able to help.

Many thanks

Sam Adzii

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is a major financial issue with going over 60k.}

25 Apr 2014 09:23:43
From what I understand Sam, the Liverpool City council have ruled against a capacity greater than 60,000 until the local area and transport infrastructure could support 60,000+ fans piling into the Anfield area at once. Currently it is not viable. If the club wish to increase our capacity further we would have to invest a substantial amount of money into the surrounding area and its transport systems. It's not financially viable as it stands but could be an option in the future.

Pretty simple explanation but as I said, that's just my understanding.

Agree0 Disagree0

It was actually a planning condition on the new stadium proposal in Stanley Park (that was given the go ahead in H&G days).
That was back in 2003.

The new redevelopment has not yet had a planning application, though one will be put in due course over the coming months.
It remains to be seen if the above condition will remain as a template. So it is not as totally black and white as being claimed.

Agree0 Disagree0

What I meant is, Adam, that there's talk of eventually filling the corners at the redeveloped Anny Road end which may bring capacity to about 65k.
Whether that goes in to the coming planning application, I don't know.
But that total is not substantially over the 60k mark and it has been suggested that, with transport improvements that have been made since the 2003 permission, the 65k might be allowed.
There are also other Council infrastructure projects in the city that are planned that could be beneficial to LFC (and EFC) in the future.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The threshold is 60k for now. After that LFC have to contribute to the transport and infrastructure costs.}

Sorry there, the later H&G design (the fancy Allianz Arena - type one) was never given planning permission. That was supposed to be over 70k.
It was the 2003 one that was passed.

Ed02, looked up FFPR great summary! I think I understand now didn't know it had been previously posted, we are able to write off the loan repayment from the previous owners (£38million in stadium repayments I think) and any future stadium payments etc.

We have definitely made over a 45 million euro loss over the last 3 years, my question is since the test period is over 3 years and Liverpool is not under investigation yet (according to newspapers) but mostly likely will be next season, is the aggressive commercialization and sponsorship a byproduct of attempting to break even before our FFP test?

If it is evident that the club is attempting to correct the issues of the previous regime at the same time as trying to break even with regards to non-excludable expenses through commercial deals, reduction of the wage bill and the new premier league deal/champions league money will UEFA take account of this effort or is it just 'any team that has broken FFP is subject to sanctions'?

I know you dislike talking about the finances but I really do appreciate the time taken to talk about this! Find the financial side of things very interesting!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The push for commercial income would have happened regardless. Being back in the CL will help, as will the increase in TV revenue. So there will be improvements this year and again next year. But, the owners have built up some debt on the club that will also need to be addressed. The issue with sanctions is the legality of it. UEFA are aware that one team has said if any sanctions are imposed then they will take UEFA to court. They are also wary of a breakaway pan-European league and a second meeting of the interested clubs this season (at the end of March in Monte Carlo).}

Do you know which clubs attended the meeting ed was lfc one?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes and no, Liverpool is not one who attends these meetings.}

25 Apr 2014 11:10:48
I take it Liverpool were not involved in this meeting again Ed02? If not could you give your thoughts why they don't feel the need to attend these meeting. Or is it strictly invite only? Any other PL clubs that go? Maybe Liverpool just don't find it important enough at this stage? Thanks Ed02.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has not been playing in the Champions League and has not been party to the discussions. Two EPL sides always attend - a third turned up in Monte Carlo but was only involved in a meeting regarding capping sponsorship income for the FFP rules.}

25 Apr 2014 01:58:59
Just looked at today's poll, replace sakho with agger? Tough one. Do we need sakho's aggression v whoever plays up front, or do we need agger's composure and distribution? I'd probably opt for agger in this game. We're due for a penalty call against us and sakho treads that line a bit too often IMO.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What and skrtyl doesn't? If its based on that criteria you could drop both and bring toure in as well!

Agree0 Disagree0

Of course skrtel is a worry with shirt grabbing etc, but he has been the teams stand out ever present defender, no argument, and that wasn't the poll question.

Agree0 Disagree0

But to be fair Skrtel has hardly given away anything foul-wise. That grabbing, though iffy, is something that happens in basically every penalty area, from every corner, in every game in the Premier League. You could pick out instances just like it by other players in every match - that the media chose to focus on Skrtel is why his reputation seems more exaggerated than others but it really is nothing out of the ordinary. If refs want to clamp down on it then they can but there will be more players than just Skrtel giving penalties away if they do.

Hi guys, Everton Fan here. I never come on this site, but I was wondering if you could tell me how well Allen integrates into Liverpool's style of play?

Efc have been linked to Cleverly, and this has caused quite a stir among us everton fans, as we are unsure if he will fit. I've watched Cleverly in Moyes's United team, and can say I don't see much potential. But having said that, the Man U style of play is quite different to Efc's. Ours is more similar to yours, with regards to possession, and quick passing and build up.

Anyways, I ask about Allen, as in my opinion, he is a similar type of player to Cleverly, and I was wondering if he fits in well within the team? And if he's effective and can cope with the possession.

Also congrats on your season so far, and good luck with the last 3 games. Cheers :)

[Also ED, my original Username is QB (back on the efc page), but it wouldn't allow me to log into it on this site for some reason, so I made this one, Hope that's okay]

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Fine by me.}

Hiya QB2, I disagree with your assessment of Cleverly.I don't see him being similar to Allen. As Allen's main attributes are ball retention, off the ball movement and pressing/hassling players in possesion of the ball. He's suited to playing just slightly in front of a defensive midfielder. I say Cleverly has a similar role to Henderson and Jack Wilshere. In that he's a jack of all trades but a master of none. But he falls short quite a lot from the two listed above.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers mate well done to efc as well. Hoepefully both be champions league next year. And regarding cleverly I completely agree with red wisdom I can't see effort going for him anyway

Agree0 Disagree0

Cleverly has been used as a sort of Carrick-lite recycling the ball. He doesn't offer or at least isn't instructed to press the way Allen does. I think Moyes has used him in a much deeper role that he was afforded at Wigan and Watford probably because of the depth further up the field that Man united have.

His pass completion is up there with the best in the league, mostly because he does play passes side ways and backwards not that he can't play them forwards but that isn't the job given to him under Moyes.

He has been slated all season because he is used in a position that offers very little going forward and is hardly noticed unless they make a mistake. I wouldn't take him at Liverpool but he is a useful player and his form under Martinez at Wigan would be encouraging.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's struggled because his end product is woeful. Dare I say this, I think Utd were hoping he'd be a 'gerrard' type player. Powerful midfielder who can score and create from deadball situations. I think the similarities between Cleverly and Allen are minimal.
He reminds me more of Jay Spearing, who obviously didn't fit.
Everton should keep Barkley, you have a good manager and a good squad, no reason you have to sell. Good luck pal I hope you get 4th

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Apr 2014 08:25:32
I may be one of the only people who rates Cleverley. I just think Moyes can't utilise him. There is nothing wrong with playing it sideways so long as it's not every time. Under Fergie (who basically won every game with his illustrious supply of wingers (Nani, Young, Valencia, Giggs etc)) all he needed of his midfielders was to shift the ball out wide. Cleverley's ability to do this successfully 90% of the time made him a very reliable base for Fergie to start his attacks.

He has proven he has the ability to pick a pass and when he gets around the box he isn't too bad at hitting a shot either. He just needs to be afforded a more adventurous role. He needs to be told to drive on with the ball and utilise his incisive passing in a forwards direction. He'll never be the next Lampard or Scholes, but he could be a good Tom Cleverley.

Don't be dissapointed if you sign him as Martinez has worked with him before and he's not as bad as the media make out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Okay thanks guys (and girls). Not the response I was expecting acctually, but that's mpre down to me comparing Cleverly to Allen. Thank you for the insight though, as well. Good luck again with the title push and I hope we don't sign Cleverly, but I suppose our manager knows best. :)
