Hypothetically question:

If Wilfried bony could be a part of the Sterling deal, would you take it?

Believable1 Unbelievable4

{Ed030's Note - No. }

24 Jun 2015 23:21:55
Obviously depends how much they were offering alongside, but unless it were £35m+ +Bony, I wouldn't

Agree2 Disagree2

25 Jun 2015 02:56:06
No, no and no

Agree1 Disagree1

25 Jun 2015 03:47:50
I would hold out for Bacca instead of going for Bony. Take the cash from City and pay for Bacca. Bony is good but Bacca suits our play better.

Agree3 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 10:07:26
I'd take £25m plus Bony. No question.

If Bony doesn't play much this season and he's happy with that then I'd change my opinion, I'd want a player who wants to play rather than just collect his wages.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 22:29:43
Okay so I've calmed down a bit after initially blowing my kixi fruit this morning because we bought what seemed like anither midfielder.

But with gerrard and sterling leaving, milner already coming in, allen and lucas and markovic possibly going, it seems not so bad now.

what i think is most significant is that i think this could now be the signing to actually replace suarez, if used corectly. If he's used as another midfielder then i am done. If used as a suarez type player then i might actually be optimistic.

Believable4 Unbelievable5

24 Jun 2015 23:12:14
Or a player that plays of the front and creates space for others. You know like Suarez did!

Agree6 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 01:34:48
Suarez never played in midfield though. He was always a tricky forward.

Firmino is a number 10 at heart. If we use him like we used suarez then great, he's our suarez replacement.

If not, he's another ton of money wasted prematurely on players we don't need.

And to be honest, with rodgers as our manager, its hard to be excited about any signing at all, because you always know they'll either block someone else out the team who deserves more game time, or will not be utilised properly. Probably both.

Agree3 Disagree7

25 Jun 2015 10:13:53
I just get the impression you haven't watched him that much tbh??

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 21:59:31
So Ilori is off injured again? as i keep saying, him and Sakho can not guarantee you run of games through a season. and Lovren is not better than Skrtel.

You might keep saying it but most people (including me) don't seem to agree with you.

Hi Eds,
Do you know of any clubs that are interested in Yarmolenko? For someone who got 14 goals 14 assists in 26 games from a wide position with performances such as that vs Everton in the EL its a bit surprising that not many clubs seem to have made an offer for him. Or is his asking price too high? What are your thoughts on him?

{Ed002's Note - Try the European page.}

24 Jun 2015 21:57:46
Where-oh-where is Rogers? OK. I know it's been said that he's on holiday until July, but seeing as though he seems to have a lot to say about a lot of things, you would think there would be a comment about his mate being sacked? How about us signing a decent player?
Do you think he has been told to button-it?
Also, I'm pleased with the early transfers for a change. Do you think they're spending all the money before he comes back, so there's none left for Benteke? ;-)

24 Jun 2015 21:40:57
Ok so first of all great signing, have a good feeling that Firmino is going to be top class for us.
Secondly, we now have lucas, hendo, allen, marko, ibe, sterling, Can, coutinho, firmino, lallana and milner all fighting for a starting place. Surely Sterling will leave and also Allen as ed001 said earlier he was offered to swansea. I'd like to get kovacic but Bacca makes more sense for now so expect to see us making an offer for him in the next few days. Interested to hear other opinions on what formation and players we should use next year. I would have lucas protecting the back 4 every week with milner hendo and can in front of him. Coutinho/firmino just behind origi/ings

Believable6 Unbelievable0

24 Jun 2015 23:21:46
I am from Swansea and it is the first I have heard of Allen being offered to us. News to me and all my season ticket holding mates

24 Jun 2015 21:31:03
Eds fellow reds ,just read a report that kovacic has sign an extension at inter til 2019 .have you heard any thing or does he's current contract that anyway

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - his contract runs until then anyway mate. Maybe it was an old report?}

24 Jun 2015 21:51:02
Cheers ed001 , that's why his price is so high then .

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 21:30:51
Hi eds, what is the deal with lallana? I really like him and want him to start but with Henderson coutinho and firmino being definite starters. And also I'd think Can would've employed in midfield too. Where does he stand? Surely he's not just a squad player? To good to be wasted on someone's bench .

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he will have to fight for his place.}

24 Jun 2015 22:52:11
the bench is better than the treatment table , he too light weight for me and gets pushed of the ball to easy , i hope he bulks up a bit to get stronger

Agree0 Disagree3

24 Jun 2015 23:11:29
Amazing how he was a top class player and highly thought of in Soton but suddenly cause he's in Liverpool he needs to bulk up. Maybe he just needs someone running beyond him and around him so he has someone to offload the ball to?

Agree5 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 02:55:01
I disagree. I think Can could be a great player but all this nonsense about him being able to play anywhere on the pitch before he started for us worried me. When you hear that its generally nonsense. He should be in midfield and there i think he would get to show what he Can do!! :)

He'd score a boatload with Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana & Ibe behind him.

24 Jun 2015 23:35:19
That would be 4-1-4-1 formation?
Who's the 1? Lucas or hendo or can?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 07:22:20
Not everyone was happy with our signings last season eg: Mario, Lambert and Lallana all received criticism at some point.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 07:42:55
Not in the same team fella!

I'd usually go 4-2-3-1 - Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Henderson, Milner; Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino; Bacca/Sturridge for a strong looking "best" XI if we sign Clyne & Bacca. You could swap Can for Milner& stick Milner where Lallana is and its just as strong. Lucas & Hendo in the more tactical games for maximum solidity.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 20:54:38
Hi Eds, regarding Moreno & who challenges him at LB. I'd completely forgotten about Enrique. Guess nobody wants to buy him. So what happened with Brad Smith? BR gave him his debut at Chelsea & that's the last I saw of him!? Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he was involved in a contract dispute with the club which saw him recalled from loan. He is likely to leave.}

24 Jun 2015 23:15:11
Ironically he didn't want to sign without a realistic idea of how much he'd get played, so we took recalled him from his loan and didn't play him.

Fun fact - Smith is the highest capped full back in the squad (4)

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 20:26:41
Ed01 question about the Milner and Firmino signings. assuming that Sterling will be sold, I'm curious what you believe these two signings do to two of our high profile signings from last year, Lallana and Markovic. If Can moves into the midfield and Milner and Hendo are also going to be regularly in the starting 11 and it looks like Coutinho and Firmino will be starters as well. with Ings in for Sturridge until he is healthy you quickly find very little room for Lallana/Markovic or Ibe. I hope there is a plan but you are going to end up with someone being really unhappy with their playing time next year. Oh and I haven't mentioned Lucas or a potential Kovacic move either. I realize you need more than just 11 players and require depth off the bench, but a lot of these guys are not going to be content with that role. Curious what yours or anyone else's thoughts are about how all this plays out.

thanks.

Lee

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I expect Markovic to be sent out on loan for a season, for he is clearly not ready for the Prem yet.
Lallana is a different matter, he picked up quite a few injuries and never really established himself. He is going to have the choice of upping his game consistently, settling for a bit part role or moving on. I would expect him to fight for his place next season and then reconsider his options next summer depending on how things work out. Personally I think he will end up leaving next summer to be honest, though I hope he just ups his game, as that would be best for Liverpool.}

24 Jun 2015 20:52:31
There will be plenty of games next season, Firmino and Coutinho can't play all of them. I'm sure Lallana and Ibe will compete with them for places in the starting line up in the prem and probably start in the League Cup and Europa group matches. Hope we see Ojo, Sinclair, Kent, Rossiter in the cup competitions.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 21:16:46
Assuming Markovic is loaned out, I'm not convinced there is a real issue in terms of who is 'left out'. Ignoring the '2 players for each position' rule, we have Firmino, Couts, Ibe fighting over maybe 2 positions. We have Milner, Hendo, Lucas, Can, Allen (I know) fighting over 3 positions. There is a lot of scope for everyone to get their chance. Seems a good place to be in IMO.

Agree2 Disagree1

24 Jun 2015 21:19:00
I said at the time Lallana was a poor buy, I hate being proved right when it's about a player gone bad but no doubt we will take a big hit on him. I don't know if it's me but he just never really looked like he tried that hard :/

Agree4 Disagree8

{Ed001's Note - I think his issue is more that he tries too hard personally.}

24 Jun 2015 21:28:51
Eds, you say he's not ready for PL football yet, but wouldn't we look to send Markovic on loan to another Premier League club? He's shown at Benfica he's talented, just hasn't adapted to English football yet for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I would hope he got a Prem deal, I think that would be best, but we would have to find a Prem club that wanted to take him on loan. That is not as easy as it sounds. The limits on loans within the Prem are tight. It would be the most suitable option, but I am just not sure if the club will be able to make it work.}

24 Jun 2015 21:37:46
When you have players for all positions it really makes you work harder for your place in the starting 11 . We just need players who want to fight that starting place .
Cheers
Jamesee

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 22:37:36
All I ever think about Lallana is he's mediocre, he'll do job for you and will a few deft touches but he won't impact games which is what you need for a player of his position. He is talented and he will run himself into the ground for you, but he is not worth 25 million. I was staggered when we paid that much for a good squad player in my opinion. Put it this way, if we player 4231 next season which seems likely he would be 5th choice in the attacking midfield positions behind Coutinho, Ibe, Firmino and milner who could well be used in AM. As I say I like him but we way overpaid

Agree1 Disagree5

24 Jun 2015 23:05:11
Edd001 man lallana is a top player when he's on form. I hope he gets back to his best because if he can this year he will be one of the best players in the squad. He's had injuries but also been messed about by Rodgers.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 08:26:34
Lallana was easily one of our better players last season when he got a run of games. If he can stay fit I fully expect him to up his game from last year. His footwork around the box absolutely mesmerises me,and creates him so much space where it doesn't look possible. A player like him can only help Liverpool for me.

Doesnt seem to have a lot of swagger, Ings. That natural confidence you need as a striker.

Look forward to him proving me wrong.

Cracking finish by Belotti, he seems to have thay killer instinct.

24 Jun 2015 22:40:59
He seemed to run himself into the ground after about 20 mins. He was sprinting around the pitch for the first 20 but looked knackered for the rest of the game. Having said that he didn't get much service and Kane didn't exactly help him by trying to shoot from all angles of the pitch.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed030's Note - I hope he will go out on loan and get regular first team football. }

25 Jun 2015 06:29:47
I think he will be the next one to follow the Sterling, Ibe trend into the first team. Though I still hope for Teixeira to get his chance.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 19:08:41
Hi Eds!

I couldn't find any on this player since last year.

I just saw that Arda Turans agent is pointing him towards England. I know that we have a rather packed MF and all, but he is a real fighter previously known to be a LFC fan. Any chance at all that he could end up on our attacking MF?

I'm thinking for instance if Markovic goes on loan to build experience as mentioned.

Thanks in advance!!!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed030's Note - I think our interest in Turan may have past, Good players though. }

24 Jun 2015 18:48:20
do u think £85 million is too much for; Sterling, Balo, Borini, Lambert, Alberto, Allen, Teixera, Coates, Toure and Enrique? I feel these are the players we need to move on and invest the money into starters with quality.

Believable6 Unbelievable6

24 Jun 2015 19:21:02
Why would we sell Teixera. He is going to be a great player for us. He just needs a good loan move for a year. Toure is staying as he signed a new deal.
I agree the rest will probably move on.

Agree10 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 19:24:04
Yep. Toure has signed a contract extension so won't be going. No one except hellomagazine.com have any interest in Enrique. Allen doesn't appear to be for sale. Teixeira is recovering from a broken leg. Alberto hasn't covered himself in glory, and won't break any transfer records. Lambert was an inexpensive purchase, and may or may not choose to move on, but won't cost the earth if he does. Of the remainder (associated fees aside) you might be looking at 65m+
If we can offload Balo and Borini, we will be taking a hit on both. I suspect Borini will not generate the money he would have done had he gone after doing well at Sunderland last year.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 19:38:23
I wouldn't sell teixeira the others I agree

24 Jun 2015 20:05:37
I really doubt Texeira will make it at Liverpool.

Agree1 Disagree7

24 Jun 2015 20:37:43
Teixeira has a broken foot and nobody is going to buy him right now. I agree I would be surprised if he ever got a chance at LFC. Maybe he will leave next summer along with Enrique, Yesil, Toure and Skrtel (if he doesn't sign a new contract).

Sterling, Balotelli, Borini, Alberto, Coates will all leave this summer, Lambert if LFC can find a buyer. Allen? No chance while Rodgers remains the manager.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - you might be surprised about Allen, as I said earlier or yesterday, I was told he was offered to Swansea. So maybe there is a chance he is leaving this summer.}

24 Jun 2015 20:55:31
That definitely is very interesting Ed001. Either way, I think Allen has had enough chances to show what he is all about and clearly, he is the week link among all of our central midfielders.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - when I was told he was offered to Swansea, the person who told me made a joke about him and Brendan having a lover's tiff or maybe Rodgers has gone as well. They seemed to be genuinely surprised that Allen would be sold while Rodgers was in charge too. Allen was described as a teacher's pet. Not sure if they are a bit bitter or if it is a genuine opinion though. Hard to tell.}

24 Jun 2015 21:25:23
Kovacic plays tbe same position as Allen but is much better (obviously)

Where clearly replacing him

Just not enough room for all these mids with out one leaving

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 21:34:54
Wouldn't read too much into comments like that from Swansea, football is full of childish observations that are based on half truths. For teachers pet he's spent a lot of time on the naughty step aka the bench. I still rate Allen but at Liverpool level he's just not good enough at any one job. Not a strong DM, not creative and not a scorer. OK isn't enough to warrant a long term place in the squad. He'd be first name on the team sheet though at the right mid table club.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I really think Allen should have just stayed at Swansea personally. He was at the right level for him. I fully agree with you on your reading of both his ability and the comments, but it wasn't said in confidence so I could share it to give an idea of the kind of things that get said in off hand comments.}

24 Jun 2015 22:47:29
Fingers crossed Ed, the move would be right for him as well because he will really struggle to break into the team next year especially if Kovacic joins as well. That will leave Can Lucas Hendo (maybe Kovacic) and Milner for the CM spots. Not to mention we could use Rossiter and Chirivella to fill out the squad if needed. There is no doubt about Allen's commitment, he is just anonymous in games.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 01:31:34
Not saying that the Swansea comments about BR v Allen are true but one has to say that BR does not do enuff to disspell that notion because boy, does he seem to bend over backwards to find a place for him in the starting XI with his wired selections

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jun 2015 07:48:26
Allen has hardly ever been a first pick redohio. Remember why Rodgers was so keen to sign him? Gerrard had missed most of the previous season and the new manager desperately wanted someone he could trust as his "controller" in the most important area of the pitch. Gerrard stayed fit and Allen didn't that first season and he's found it difficult to become a first team regular ever since. There are many players I'd criticise before Joe Allen. He always tries and is a dedicated pro. Some of the abuse he gets is frankly disgraceful.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 18:41:40
Away from all the rumours and pandemonium of firmino now.

I always wondered. if there is a few non speaking english players in the team. how is that handeled in the dressing room between them and the coach. do the club provide for each a translator. how does that work out if its a few diffrent langauges?
How do clubs handle that?
Any thoughts dear eds?
Many thnx

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - the club provides a translator if necessary, though they usually find one of the players acts in that role, which is preferred as it can bring the squad closer. Usually through them playing jokes through the translation. They also provide English lessons which the players will take until they are fluent or they leave, whichever comes sooner.}

24 Jun 2015 19:17:22
I always wondered about this, cheers ed. Curious as well do players from the same country often band together? How much mixing goes on in the squad outside of working hours? Are there any good examples of friends from different countries or do friendships tend to be drawn down nationality lines??

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it depends on the club, some clubs try and break up those kind of groupings as they tend to form cliques if left unchecked.}

24 Jun 2015 20:20:51
It might be a shot in the dark but I'm an English teacher and have thought about approaching clubs offering my services. I don't suppose you know how I could do this, do you?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they usually advertise positions on their website. Failing that, you could approach a club directly, sending in a CV/resume with a covering letter. A lot of the time they will use agencies for cover work, so it might be worth signing up to any local ones, you can always turn down other stuff they send you. The other option is to take your CV/resume into the club offices and try and get someone in a managerial role to speak to you. Even if you just make sure they get your details, you will have a chance of being called if they get let down by one translator. Which club were you considering?}

24 Jun 2015 20:40:52

{Ed001's Note - you are welcome.}

24 Jun 2015 23:40:11
This would be an interpreter, guys, like Jose Mourinho before he became a manager, at Barca. Translators only deal in reading and writing, so perhaps they'd be used for signing any paperwork with the players, whereas interpreters are for speaking and listening. I've always wondered how a manager does a team talk to players who don't speak English so well.

with the new signings thins are starting to look up , last season when we had bought all the players we did our team still looked lite weight but with milner and firminio the midfield looks solid already and that adds to players like hendo and couthino so i have hope which was not there last season so let's just pray we keep these type of transfers up for the areas where we are weak , we really can't depend on sturridge to be on form or injurie free , so if we can get a decent striker then i forsee a very good season ahead

Believable2 Unbelievable2

24 Jun 2015 20:21:03
I think that there are bigger issues than the quality of player. Defence for example. We could have the best 4 defenders in the world but with our current coaching and organising they would still be made to look like dummies. It's the same with the midfield, none were shown or looked instructed to fill in the gaps left by our attacking fullbacks so our back four were left exposed constantly. All the changes in players aren't going to help that. Then you have the need for our players to play in their preferred positions. All these are bigger issues than personnel IMO. With the addition of quality we are heading in the right direction though. I do not think BR was left in charge without directions, maybe the change in backroom staff is to bring about these changes in coaching! Here's to hoping!

In regards to our interest in Bacca, if we were to make a bid do you think it would be possible to offer Luis Alberto as part of the deal or is that out of the question?

{Ed001's Note - it is possible, though they would have to be interested in him and he would have to be interested in joining them.}

Hi Ed001 really happy about the way Liverpool went in and got the deal sorted pretty sharpish.Maybe they are learning by their mistakes.I am also very,very happy that the back line is getting sorted as well.Sakho has to be the main CB but also as you said a actual defender at RB,now imagine that.That just leaves the LB position Ed do you see Moreno still there?
Barry inLouth

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it can work well having one defender who charges forward and one who sits and covers, look at how well it has worked for Chelsea in the last couple of seasons. I would be happy to give Moreno another season to make the place his personally, with the option to look for a replacement in January always available if need be.}

24 Jun 2015 18:15:48
I'd love us to sign a decent centre back and a proper goal keeper. Or even give ilori a fair crack in the team. Not likely though.

Agree4 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 18:30:20
I think Moreno should be given another season,just to see if he can learn and progress - the season gone was such a disappointment and full of so much negativity it is diffcult to judge players potential to progress. If Moreno can cut out the stupid mistakes and lapses in concentration it would be a huge start - and not something I would imagine is hugely difficult to alter(?).

Wanted to ask if any of the eds know anything regarding pep defensively. I know he is well regarded and enjoys a high pressing attacking style, but do you think he can get our defence sorted also. I wonder how much input he will have with Brendan involved. As Brendan has been so quite would love to know what was said at the review, we can only guess. It does seem that more of are younger players will get game time, and played in the correct position. You guys think this has anything to do with the owners

Believable9 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - if the high press is done correctly, which is what he emphasises, then it takes the pressure off the defence as the whole team is working together to defend. In my opinion, and having spoken to numerous coaches over the years regarding this, every part of the game should be done as a team and the best defences start from the forwards. Barcelona can get away with Mascherano and his total inability to actually play central defence because he very rarely has to actually act as a standard central defender. Because the team are working a full press, he is able to play like a defensive midfielder and harry and hassle, rather than as a centre back and channel players away from the goal. You only have to look at how Morata skipped past him without any real effort on the couple of occasions the press failed and he was forced to try and be a centre back to see how poor he actually is in that role. The press protects him and allows him to play to his strengths, rather than exposes his weaknesses in the role. Lovren is a similar type of player, in that he also wants to harry and hassle, rather than just block off runs and force attackers out wide etc. A high press will allow him to just be a part of that press, rather than making him look rash and wild as he did at times last season. If the coaching staff can get the press to work, then it is a very good way of protecting defensive weakness, which is why Bielsa used it to such great effect while managing a Chile team that had almost no defensive players to speak of. He knew the defence was extremely weak, so he used the press to protect it. The main issue with a press is that it can be exposed by long balls over the top, but having pace such as Sakho and Ilori at the back can negate that threat to a major extent, and that it can be energy sapping. So we will need our players to up their fitness, which can take time, some players can take a couple of seasons to gain the necessary stamina to work well in the system. It is definitely possible for stamina to improve to cope though, you only have to look at the difference all the extra work Charlie Adam has done in recent years has made to him. It is because he is not just doing the one training session then lazing around or partying like most players. He is staying behind and putting in extra training. We will need our players to do more training sessions and expect to see them struggle a bit in the early months with fatigue late in games, but the fitness will come if they stick with it.}

That's a great answer 01. Absolutely bang-on.
This might sound a lil vague as a question. but I'd be interested to hear your opinion on how we will line up next season when at full-strength (with the players we currently have - I'm not asking who we will sign or anything silly, just factoring the players we currently have In our squad - minus Sterling, I suppose). I mean, will Ings start with Sturridge up front? What of the seemingly similar Lallana, Coutinho & Firmino? Will Milner start in the middle with Hendo, Can and what about Lucas and Allen? What of Ibe and Markovic? Who are the best centre back pairing? Is Moreno for you? Who plays at LB, if anyone? I ask because with this latest raft of signings I can see Rodgers taking a bit of time trying to find his best team. And let's face it - the one thing he doesn't have is time! That will bring its own problems.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - for me it has to be Studge with Firmino up top, Couts, Milner, Hendo, Lucas in midfield. Wisdom, Ilori, Sakho and Moreno as a back four. Though in practice it would be more of a 3 up top with Couts and Firmino with freedom behind Sturridge. Milner has not come in to sit on the bench, so he has to be in the team somewhere. The advantage of this is that you can change the formation in midfield very easily with those five, if you include Firmino, offering a lot of different possible formations without having to make major changes, just minor tweaks.}

24 Jun 2015 18:35:58
I agree with your potential first XI ed, my question though is what does this mean for Lallana? A player we paid a lot of money for is seemingly going to become a mere squad player in the coming season - will he be happy with that role (which I think is a nigh on certainty as I don't see him ahead of any other player)?

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 18:40:53
Where dos that leave Lallana Ed001? He cost 25 million GBP and no way will he want to be a squad player. There will be a lot of unhappy midfielders at the club next season, and i have not even thought of Markovic and Texiera who both hopefully get good loan moves to further their careers. Even Ibe will find game time difficult to come by especially in the premier league. Brendan needs to learn how to rotate his squad properly or there will be a lot of frustration in that dressing room.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I always said that good as he is Lallana was a mistake, he now has to step up and prove that opinion is wrong by forcing his way into the team. Right now he is on the edges and needs to change that by playing well when he gets his chances.}

24 Jun 2015 18:49:34
Ed is on the money. The prob is wthat to play the high press, you need a GK that can play as a sweeper-keeper as well so even if the ball is hit over the top, the keeper will always get there before the player because he is already advanced to some degree. That is why Mingo will not succeed and needs to be sold IF we are playing that system. Also, Bielsa did the same at OM this season as their defence is a shambles hence, he presses the opponents high up and BANG, they cough it up BUT each time that defence got exposed, it was aweful. If you wanna see how great the high press is, watch Germany and Costa Rica at the WC in Brazil and see how well that can work IF you have the right players to play it which is why I wanted Kaylor Navas to come to us because he was brilliant in that system as the sweeper-keepr just like Neuer was with Germany

Agree1 Disagree1

25 Jun 2015 02:40:49
Is it not likely that players will rotate more, you could argue we have the depth in the squad - finally - to do so?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - the teams that work the press best do not use rotation much. It requires a high degree of teamwork, you really want a settled unit that know each other well. If we do use more rotation it would be a worry.}

I do think we need a good striker, and like Ed01 said (i think) someone experienced like bacca for example.

Lallana is quality. He'll be an important player this season. Our ability to rotate high quality players like Firmino, Coutinho & Lallana is exciting and a sign that the squad depth is improving. Sturridge, Bacca, Ings & Origi is a similarly stronger and better balanced set of strike options. Bacca looks a proper predator. Fingers crossed fellow Reds!

For me, the Milner signing is becoming more astute by the day. With Gerrard off to LA we became short on experience and with the continued focus by the club on buying young, someone who knows how to win, work, and stay settled is extremely important. He may not be "talismanic" like Gerrard, but at this juncture he feels like that calming presence that speaks to composure needed.

While these other signings give us the talent to compete at the top, it's Milner I feel who'll fuel a growing maturity. Probably something the fan will hear less about, but it's the influence of these Toures and Milners which sometimes make the biggest difference.

24 Jun 2015 17:02:06
Tiger,
I still think we need a better keeper who can organise a defense and good distributor.
We needed a DM in the form of Medel to protect the defense and break up attacks.
We need a top clas Defensive Coach to finally get us strong and tight at the back.
We really really need the Striker.

Agree6 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 17:07:45
What - just because we signed Firmino? His recent team finished 8th, same as the current team of Kovachich. Even if we can get Bacca - which I doubt - his team also finished out of the top 4 (albeit won the EL). None of them played for bad teams or bad managers either.

Don't get me wrong, all very good signings or potential signings, but a lot of people here got very excited last summer because of our signings. I think that even with these 3 we are highly unlikely to finish top4 especially as we also have some big names leaving, Gerrard, probably Sterling (combined 16 league goals between them last year, Firmino and Kovachich scored 14). And we know some players take time to settle in the PL. Again all are welcome and potentially good signings but I suggest to be a more realistic in expectations this time.

Agree4 Disagree8

24 Jun 2015 17:22:14
No we didn't become top 4 contenders. We already had a squad capable of getting into the top 4, the problem we had and maybe still have, is that the tactics were just inept.

McGoveb, until otherwise changed, we have Lucas who, IMHO, is an excellent DM and fully capable of being that guy in a top-4 team. Not that I'd sneeze at Medel, but I'm happy with what we've got.

As to the all-out striker, I completely agree. Presuming we don't fall foul of FFP, tha, more than any other position, would be the place is spend. As much as Mignolet has his faults, with adequate defence I don't think he's as much of a liability as is our inability to consistently take advantage of attacking opportunities.

24 Jun 2015 17:39:11

We'll never get in to the top four with the amount of changes that occurs season in - season out.

I still think our manager is the man, and I'm happy with the players we've acquired, but I suspect much of last seasons problems was with the changes that occurred.

How do you expect a team to gel when they don't know who the flip they are playing alongside? It's going to be a slow process this to get back in to the top four, and one which no one can afford.

I just hope the players settle.

The goalkeeping conundrum is going to be the one that costs us, in my opinion. We will never have a solid defence if we don't have a solid, reliable goalkeeper capable of organising it. Mignolet simply cannot fulfill that role and we don't look like signing anybody else - it is going to make a huge difference.

We had the same defensive issues, the same goalkeeper, and the same manager when we finished second, did we not?

We just happened to score about fifty more goals in that season.

So it seems scoring goals can be useful for a football team, regardless of other issues.

Not sure why Firmino will have trouble gelling alongside Coutinho. Or Milner alongside Hendo or behind Sturridge. Not as if they've never played with each other before.

I've got to say if from here we get in kovacic I'm pretty extatic. if we add bacca to that I'm over the moon. full backs have been mentioned but I don't think it's vital although I do like clyne as a player and would be very happy with him although he needs good coaching to improve defensively which I'm not sure is at Liverpool at the moment unfortunately! But would still improve the team and squad for sure.

I would like to take the time though to actually congratulate the board as on paper (I'm assuming from here as if kovacic and bacca will sign) we have done fantastically.

Forget about finances as the eds keep pointing out we don't have the information to discuss it properly and all I can say is that the club will have very intelligent financial advisors who will not be stupid enough (at least I hope) to bankrupt the club or breach ffp. Fsg are not ignorant enough to be 100% sure we will be in the cl or win the league or anything next season so they wouldn't budget on the basis if we don't make cl then we close the gates etc.

Anyway back to my actual point.

Ings - it's a good bit of business no matter what happens really. Worst case scenario he doesn't settle at all and probably would be sold for a profit next summer. Btw thought the way he spoke about earning a "iconic" number at Liverpool was fantastic and he seems a top lad. Let's not forget also at 21 in his first prem season what was it 13/14 goals?? Not have bad for the lowest scoring team in the league I'm pretty sure. And a lot of people who would probably know a lot better say he was always a better prospect than Kane so it's obviously possible for ings to bang in 50 odd goals too ;)

Milner - Underrated signing on a lot of levels for me. Pretty good from a dead ball which is a plus. Has experience we definitely need. Always gives 110% (and supposedly took wage cut to come which is more than you can say about some players). Also he has played in a very multi cultured team that has won the league. After this summer Liverpool could have a very multi cultured team and we don't really have any English or premier league experienced leader of note and Milner brings all of this so I think it's a great signing and he's almost guaranteed to contribute 15+ goals from either scoring or assisting which is a return not to be sniffed at.

Bogdan- okay I really don't get this one. Ed001 summed it up saying ward who has signed a new contract can easily do the job that bogdan will be asked to do. I would have loved the big keeper to really push us on cech or handanovic but it didn't happen and I'm glad at least we didn't go out and spend 10 mil on a back up on 100k wages or something ridiculous like we have done with some other positions before!

Gomez - honestly know zilch about him. I gather from some on here he can play rb as well as cb? If so possibly he will be looked more so as a rb but I'm not going to comment much here.

Kovacic - I haven't again seen much of him so I will not judge to much but I will say he does have ability that's undeniable and he has one of those powerful presences on the ball which I like in this position a player who can nearly run through people with pace and powerful legs! And again a deeper 2 of Henderson with Lucas or kovacic possibly all three in tough games looks very solid!

Firmino - woke up yesterday morning saw the reports and was like yeah yeah whatever wake up today deal basically done. I'm thrilled is all I can say. He is a player we have needed aswell as a striker imo we need a number 10/wide player who has the potential to score 20 +. Modern day football almost demands it if you look at top teams and this is the one thing I think coutinho and sterling were missing combined so firmino looks tasty and he links up well with coutinho and I think his movement up top is potentially clever enough to play up top for a run of games also.

Bacca - almost costa-esque I would say. Never really seen him bury them from 30 yards or anything but wow the last season or two he knows where the net is in and around the area. We were linked with him a couple years ago and started watching him around then and wasn't that impressed but he has seriously improved and would be a 1 in 2 striker for us me thinks!

Add to this I ed001 says skrtel could be on the way out with agent looking around and ilori staying and saying he'll be given a chance. It seems like a lot of what almost every fan wanted has been done. And bacca firmino and coutinho would just be magic I think it could be a magical trio them playing together.

So I would like to congratulate them on getting
firmino. And if they do manage to get kovacic and possibly bacca well then thank you fsg as not only would you have bought some top players but collectively players who at least look like they fit in a team together and with some quality experience to go alongside the developing players like ibe markovic can etc.

One think I'm curious to ask ed002 as you said Liverpool came in and offered more than other teams were willing to for firmino which surprised me somewhat. Also earlier in the season you said he'd been watched but highly unlikely. I'm just wondering was this a transfer that did take you a bit by surprise ( in general and with the seemingly quick negotiations also) or had it just been quite a well kept closed deal that had been in progress for the last number of weeks possibly as I know you also keep saying the owners are trying to keep things much more behind closed doors?

And honestly are people at this stage against fsg just because they kept Rodgers?? Seems to be the impression I get when yet again we really don't know what happened. I'm sure after klopp left Dortmund they would have been allowed to ring him up and ask Liverpool? Interested? He could have said no there and then we really don't know. Apart from that I'm genuinely interested to hear any other bits and pieces against them as the way I see it they're not ideal but they seem to learn from mistakes and be willing to reevaluate when things don't work!

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I had explained that Liverpool had rekindled interest. The only surprise was Liverpool making an offer as high as they did.}

24 Jun 2015 16:05:54

This maybe a bad shout or Maybe I am optimistic. having a big name striker would be great but I am not sure we need to spend the money. Ings works really hard to get himself in the right positions and score goals. I am not saying he's amazing but the kid can score and I think with PC, RF and AL/IBE feeding him, I think he will deliver. Creativity is not our problem it's having that poacher/predator in the box to put games away. I Would like to see the money spent on our defensive game.

24 Jun 2015 18:09:45
But do we have that poacher predator at the moment? I don't think so, bar sturridge and I wouldn't be sure he can do this either he's not that player. And while ings certainly has the potential and possibly origi/sinclair they simply aren't there yet which is why I would like bacca he's at the peak of his career at 29 when the season starts and we can get 2 seasons out of him or longer still have the potential to recoup a portion of whatever fee and then have a readymade ings/origi/sinclair and if in the mean time any do excel quickly then great problem to have!

I have to say that news of a potential new deal for Illori and one of the Eds thinking that maybe an agreement for Skrtel to leave may have been reached, on top of Firmino signing, has made for a pleasant couple of days to be a red!

LFC have for once acted swiftly and in good manner to get a deal over the line and it's refreshing to see them do so! I don't remember being so excited about a signing since Suarez and before him Torres!!

It's my 43rd wedding anniversary today, and still going strong.

My first ever visit to Anfield was on 26th December 1964 when we played Stoke. It was 1-1 at half time, and my dad said at half time 'don't worry lad, we'll score 5 in the second half. Full time score was 6-1. How was that for a prediction?

50 years later it was the reverse score - I bet he'd never have seen that one coming.

I'm a bit younger than you and my first match at Anfield was 20 years later. against Stoke! 23rd Feb 1985, Stevie Nicol and King Kenny scored in a 2-0 win. Happy Days.

Hey Eds and Reds haven't posted in ages
Delighted with the signing of Firmino and hopefully he is the start of a few signings to come. I know we are being linked with a striker (Bacca who I really hope we get) and I know that position needs filling but are we looking at signing any defenders? I know we signed that Gomez chap but I don't see him starting next season and we really do need a new Centre Back. Our defense was appalling last season and was the reason we were losing games that we should have drawn or drawing games that we should have won (argument works for needing a striker as well)
Cheers in advance anyway and also hopefully Reds will stop looking for a Mignolet replacement. Seen a few posts here saying Mignolet is not good enough but last season he was actually very good and rarely at fault. His positioning isn't always great and yes in the long term maybe we do need a replacement for him but towards the end of the season he stopped us from losing badly in some games and deservs some credit for it. Not his fault the defense in front of him was so poor

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - we are bringing back Ilori and Wisdom, plus the arrival of Gomez, how many defenders do we need?}

24 Jun 2015 14:47:05
Its all about the gk. This will be 2 windows were we target changing the denfence to make things better when the problem is in the gk.

24 Jun 2015 15:55:48
Agree with Redman. That defense is not improving while Migs is still our GK. How can a defense that likes to play a high line be efficient when the GK himself does not communicate with his defenders and has no distribution attributes? Migs is not even the best shot stopper in the league to make up for his many deficiencies, so while he is No.1 GK, the defense will continue to stumble and stutter.

Agree2 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 16:35:41
I think people are underestimating how much a difference Ilori will make if he starts, next to either Lovren or Sakho, as then we can finally use the high line to full effect with a pacy defender next to one who leads both comfortable with the ball

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 17:01:11
Really don't think we need anyone else defensively. Fingers crossed new staff put in place will get them defending at a better level. Migs will learn to communicate better as will they, would of been nice to see a better keeper come in but that's not going to happen

{Ed001's Note - I know but sometimes I have these wild ideas about playing players in the position they are used to. Mad but it happens. I will try to ensure it doesn't sneak into my replies again though.}

sos I should of said isn't that the type of thing we are used to seeing from the great man.Playing people out of position

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 17:31:16
I'm just curious ed, I remember reading that Wisdom was played in midfield to improve his ability on the ball,is it common for young players to be played out of position purely in order to gain certain certain skills or to broaden their understanding of that position? e.g. a defender playing as a striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - quite often it happens yes. Kolo Toure was often used on the wings when he first broke into the Arsenal team, it was just to make sure he got on the ball and got a feel for the first team without pressure. Gerrard played just about everywhere on the pitch, and Sterling played numerous roles to improve on his understanding of the tactical side of the game. Sometimes it can help, other times it is just stopping them getting a better understanding of their natural role.}

24 Jun 2015 13:50:54
Ed001. Just grab your thoughts on something when you have time.

I've replied to a few posts relating to Clyne and signings in general, mostly before Firmino. I've argued we need a LB. No one has really joined in on that?

Am I alone on this? We have Moreno, we have 38 prem games, FA, Euro and League cups. Are people really seeing Enrique as enough cover/competition?

Only Smith was a name from the academy and I thought he has gone now?

For RB we have Wisdom, Flanno when fit, Randall and McLaughlin. Unfortunately Can as well. Manquillo is still here. Why this interest in Clyne and do you also think a LB is not more a priority,

If you know of others to cover Moreno please inform me cause I can't think of any?
Would you expect Sakho to play there or Ibe to be converted? Has Enrique turned things around?

Thanks for your input

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Sakho can provide cover, but personally I would like to see Stewart given the chance if Moreno is out of form or injured. Enrique is available if anyone would take him, not exactly been a queue of interested clubs though.}

Hi eds and fellow reds

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the hard work the eds put in this is the only site I come to for information.

Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on what the likely formation we will begin the season with?

For me I would go 4-2-3-1 with wisdom llori sakho and Moreno back 4 Henderson and can in the centre an attacking midfield 3 of lallana coutinho firmino and then Sturridge or maybe a future signing as the 1 up top.

Think that would give us balance and a great attacking threat.
Cheers for your thoughts

Believable2 Unbelievable2

24 Jun 2015 14:44:48
I don't think 4-2-3-1 is quite right for us. That's how Chelsea play and they use a direct and physical forward to make it work (Costa). Sturridge isn't that kind of player, he's better along side someone.

I can see us returning to the 13/14 4-3-3 with three from Sturridge/Ings/Firmino/New Striker playing in front of Hendo/Milner/Coutinho. Means we leave out a lot of good players but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 13:40:21
Moreno is pretty much the same albeit he is better defensively. Position and anticipation really lacking due to the pace of the game. Hopefully he has settled in and hopefully we play 4 at the back because he always get out of position as WB.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

24 Jun 2015 13:38:25
Some reports saying that we are still after kovacic as well. so how does that work out if its true? How many midfielders will be jammed in the formation? I hope we don't go for him and focus on a striker for now.

And what's happening with lambert? Is he staying?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

24 Jun 2015 14:44:49
Yeah was thinking the same sure with the arrival of firmino we should probably sell Lucas. Both midfielders both Brazilian. Makes sense one in one out.

In all seriousness though they are very different players who can easily play on the pitch at the same time and both add attributes which we don't really have enough of. So if both can be got and it's within financial means then do it!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - some deals are easier to do than others.}

24 Jun 2015 13:12:18
Eds, firmino seems to be a great signing. However, we're going to have to develop quite the rotation to keep all these players happy. That said, if we could sign one forward that is older (28-30) to allow some of our youth to develop (origi, Ibe, oyo etc) I think we'll be in great shape for years to come. Assuming we get our defence sorted. Which, what do you see happening there next year? Will lovren be given more time or will we try to move him along? I personally would like to see sakho and illori given a chance in the center with wisdom and Moreno on the flanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is unlikely that Lovren will go anywhere this summer.}

24 Jun 2015 12:59:39
Great signings so far, Firimino is a quality signing and it looks likely we could get Rondon and/or Bacca as well, all looking positive. Are we still interested in signing Konoplyanka? not bad on a free signing. Also heard we've bid for Bartra and Abdennour to sort out our defense.

{Ed001's Note - links have to be filtered and checked before they come through as we get a lot of spam from people like Sly, so we tend to just automatically filter out links to them now. 24 Jun 2015 13:44:52
My apologies ed, I'll be sure not to link them in future. There is a good article on Firmino using stats from WhoScored.com, it doesn't paint a complete picture but at least gives a little insight when used in the correct context

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, I am not a big fan of Sly anyway, get sick of them copying stuff said on the sites as 'sly sources say' rather than just admitting where the copied it from. But the spamming slybet did a while back just took it too far. They could have easily afforded to pay for adverts but they would rather spam us. That was the reason Ed033 created the spam filter, purely down to them.}

{Ed001's Note - very poor, we do little other than find them a place to stay and then leave it up to their team mates to make them feel welcome.

Every club has a different way of handling it, Chelsea I am told look after this side of things better than anyone else in the Prem. I haven't really looked into it properly, to be honest. I know at a couple of italian clubs (can't speak for all) they give help with language, orientation, finding a home, moving family and at least at two clubs they also offer an in house sports psychologist who will help them adjust to new surroundings and people.

The players often help out as well if they are a/ experienced or b/from a similar area of the world.

{Ed001's Note - not at all mate, I am just sorry I don't know more to be able to give a proper answer. I will have to take the time to look into it as it is something that has been mentioned a few times as an issue at the club by people who have found themselves left pretty much to fend for themselves after signing. We always get so hung up on finding out about new signings, we forget all about what happens once they sign, obviously I am as guilty of that as anyone. I will have to make an effort to change that before the next transfer window and put together a full article about how the clubs deal with it for our FNV site. Or pass on the info to someone on there to write up, if I don't have time to do it myself.}

Hi all,

Firstly, great to see us getting our business done early, hopefully we can get everything wrapped up in the next few weeks and give everyone a nice long pre-season together to get settled.

A question for Ed001 if you are around mate.

You mentioned earlier that this summer seems to be happening entirely without Rodgers and you have previously said that the so called "backing" following the review was nothing of the sort and that in fact the club pretty much said nothing, they didn't back him or sack him.

Is the fact that BR has been quiet so far a sign that he is learning to stay quiet himself, that he is being kept out of the limelight on purpose by the higher ups or even that the club still haven't made their mind up about him and he may still leave this summer?

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

Cheers for all the hard work Eds.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am firmly of the opinion that he is being kept out of the limelight and that it is not by choice. It is an opinion though, as no one will talk about what is happening within the club right now.}

24 Jun 2015 14:38:48
Exactly my point, ED. I mentioned before on this forum that BR is not talking because he suddenly had an epiphany or learnt to be less talkative overnight. Like you, I am of the opinion that the owners after countless warning for him to zip it, are now fed up with his trap and have moved decisively to shut it for him. Why? because there`s no microphone or journalist he has met that he doesn`t like and if we got anything good from this "review", at least we got the owners to shut his trap because clearly he can`t be trusted to do it on his own

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 21:15:03

So do you think there's still a chance he could be gone before the season starts, or do you think this is just a new regime of "shut your cake hole!"

Cheers again

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I really do not know at all. Until they report back for preseason training, I don't think we will find out either.}

24 Jun 2015 12:10:24
Just wanted to say how impressed and optimistic I am at just this Firmino deal alone.

Now I'm not jumping on some Firmino league title bang wagon, I am not going to expect anything of him.

I am just over the moon at how the deal came about. Last night at half 9 bid agreement announced and this morning signed him, boom.that is elite club mentality. That is what should happen, we've been knocking on that door for an age. Willian, costa and mkhitaryan. I'm just glad we have gone through it now.

I think we very much need a striker though, I wasn't as bothered until Firmino went through. But to get the best out of all these technically gifted creators they need a striker. Otherwise they're (I use the word lightly) useless, as there qualities won't been seen.

If we can get Bacca (as he is the closest to a Suarez type there is) and its been proven Brendan and this team can't work with other type of strikers then that will be a perfect window.

I still would love Kovacic but he seems like a luxury signing now and unlikely.

I would like to ask eds in the Kovacic deal, I know everyone is reporting we have no interest (I trust ed002 a lot more) but if inter wanted other interest in him would they not want to leak our bid, to make other clubs come for him, and since they haven't are they trying there hardest to sell others instead of him?

I am sad though that Mignoley is still the keeper. We either had to go up top fix or defence fix and I think we can see were we have chosen.

Another question eds since were all in a good mood for once, with regards to ward. How does he compare to a de gea, hart, Coutois when they were his age. The reason I ask is because they all just got thrown in goal, and look were they are now. Would the club look at that for ward? Granted it might be a few shaky seasons whilst he develops but I just cannot see him doing worse than Mignolet (I know that's not really a bench mark) but can he really do worse in your personal opinion?

A great day for Liverpool? Oh yes.

Can it get better? We'll see

Thanks in advance if you respond and Tha ks anyway if you can't for just running this website. I dint know what i'd do if it wasn't around.

I think that's enough ass kissing to warrant a reply haha

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Inter want to keep him and sell other players. So the last thing they want is to invite others in.}

24 Jun 2015 12:33:26

I know this is negative, but we now have so many attackers and cms we cannot keep them all happy, especially seeing it seems 2 more are targeted. I don't believe we will buy a striker, but even if you disclude the ones who should go, we could have about 12/3 players for 6 positions. I know you normally say 2 per position, but barring maybe origi, all the players I would say are good enough to start. And when fit, lucas, hebderson, coutinho, Sturridge and now probably firmino, would probably start in out best 11, and say we added kovacic or bacca?
I think marko should go on loan, Allen should be sold (I don't hate him, he's just not can/hendo/lucas level) and probably origi loaned to a prem team, although I doubt this. I fear rodgers may underplay can or out of position, or lucas again may want to leave? I love lallanas touch and effort but has he got the edge to force his way into the starting 11 regularly? I know this sounds pessimistic, and I am happy with the summer so far, I just fear we may force out a very promising or important player if handled wrong, or lack a settled team if rotated too much.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

24 Jun 2015 12:21:23
I think Allen has a good head on him especially in organising the defence, as pointed out on MOTD early last season he could clearly be seen shouting at other players to get in position, pick up un marked players etc.

He's just not up to it physically.

Just my view, but I agree he cannot be anywhere near top pick now.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he also tends to leave the centre backs stranded when they have the ball. I lost count of the number of expletives I aimed in his direction when one of the centre backs received the ball and he was too busy walking up field not even looking in their direction to make himself available. Just making an angle there would have made a huge difference to his performances.}

24 Jun 2015 12:50:47
Is that him ed or direction from the coaches with regards to where be should position himself when we have the ball! Is someone else instructed tl move for the cb's.

I like you can't understand with the type of player he is (possesion type) isn't moving for the ball, and it annoys me more and more when be doesn't.

But for 3 seasons he's never done that, so that's why I feel he could be instructed to not! Maybe Brendan likes him further forward.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - maybe it is instructions, but an intelligent player knows when to ignore instruction, rather than having to be told to do so by Sakho. If he is not able to show initiative, then he is not what we need.}

24 Jun 2015 13:27:45
When he arrived the thing he did best was back up the play and always provide an angle. Some of his early performances were very encouraging. He was great in the 2-2 at home to City I recall. In fact, he always seems to do well against City. Unfortunately he'll probably be 5th pick for those 2 more withdrawn midfield positions now, unless we sell Lucas which I wouldn't.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 13:28:39
You call it initiative,managers call it disregarding orders,so sit on the bench for a while

Agree0 Disagree0

Firminhos a fantastic buy. I was convinced he was united bound. He is a great buy and by far the best buy of the summer this far for lfc.
I've also noticed talk of lloris getting some first team football And skittles leaving. ThAt too would be a great step forward. Some of the signings I see no reason for but the potential signings of Kovacic and bacca if they happen would greatly improve the first team.
The biggest disappointment in our dealings has been no top goalkeeper in. And I believe that will cost us points this season.mignolet is a liability unfortunately and distribution is awful. Cech might not have been interested in joining us but arsenal have made a superb signing there.
Anyways I might be talking the foot of the gas for football this year but lfc aren't doing too bad in dealings so far. Also interested in Rodgers role now.

Believable13 Unbelievable1

24 Jun 2015 12:46:22
Big Al

I thought mignolet did enough to warrant another season, he improved a lot.

Cant be easy being a keeper with our unorganised rubbish defence in front of you.

Agree5 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 13:42:41
Lavers I have to disagree pal
He is a mistake always waiting to happen. I want like every other fan for him to be good enough but the standard the club should be at he just doesn't cut it.
I can't comprehend a player never mind a goalkeeper having such awful distribution and playing for lfc. Under no pressure and kicking balls out of play or to noone is just unacceptable man. It drives me maD.
He does not make up for it in other areas either. He does not command his area or communicates enough with the back line. Being a decent shot stopper should not cut iT.
I am aware our defence needs major improvement but it begins with a goalkeeper the defence has confidence in. A goalkeeper should not be in the team when you are aware a mistake can happen at anytime. Imagine a final or fighting for fourth or a title.

Agree1 Disagree1

24 Jun 2015 14:50:19
Big Al

Don't get me wrong there's plenty of better keepers out there, but I just feel we need other areas sorting out first.

Maybe next summer look at a keeper if there's not much improvement from mignolet

hey eds,

just read your thoughts about a centre back leaving and none arriving. today I read an article in the telegraph about us opening talks with aymen abdennour of monaco. it said we opened talks, but gave no real quote or definitive statement that we were actually looking at signing him. IMO the telegraph used to be a great source of information on events that were true, but this article suggests to me that this is starting to change. I am from australia so i don't have the luxury of reading this source daily. is the telegraph a credible source of information or is it becoming more like the mirror and other tabloids.

thanks guys really appreciate it

{Ed001's Note - I honestly have no idea, I do not have the time to read newspapers any more. The only time is when someone mentions them here or one of the other editors puts a link up on our editors' widget to look at. The only reason I know some stuff regarding how Balague works is because one of the editors we used to have did some ghostwriting for his website a few years ago. Judging by the stuff people ask us about on here, it seems all the papers are just hitwhoring these days sadly.}

24 Jun 2015 12:06:08
Just extending that line of thought - is there any significance to which articles are linked on the LFC website Media Watch Page or do they just show all the rumours going around?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they just link to all they find.}

Welcome Mr Firminio and thank you for coming, can't wait to see you in the Liverpool red shirt.

An excellent siging and exciting.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - thank you for coming? At least we know how they sealed this deal so quickly now.....}

24 Jun 2015 13:32:54
You think that's bad?

Just wait for the medical.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Ed007 will no doubt be recording it if that is the case....}

24 Jun 2015 11:19:13
Hey Eds, with the Clyne bids/rumours RB appears to be a position we're looking at. I think you guys are satisfied that we have Flanagan and Wisdom to compete for that spot. Do you think that either of these guys could develop to be top class RBs or is it simply that you don't think Clyne isn't any better?

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I think they are as good as Clyne, they are also younger, so have more potential. Clyne suits Southampton well, as they have a lot of protection for their full backs, so he can charge forward at will, not having to worry too much about defending. We do not give our full backs the same protection, we don't have Wanyama purely sitting in to cover, so I am not convinced he would suit us. Wisdom and Flanagan are both much better defensively, though neither are as good going forward, so suit our team better, I think.}

24 Jun 2015 16:02:05
Spot on Ed. I have posted the exact same thing. if Clyne is bought and doesn`t play in the same system that makes him look good at the saints then he will struggle as Lovren has. I like you, think he is not a better defender than Flanno and Wisdom who is just tough to beat one on one. As for going forward, that can be coached and he/Flanno can be mentored to do that if the manager is willing to give the time and effort to coach him up BUT as well all know, our defenders` issues are uncoachable per BR so I doubt he will do any of that

Hi Eds,

I have read Clubs insure Players ? Does it mean that Sturridge salary, treatment is covered in the insurance policy ?Can you shed some light on this .

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, his treatment and wages will be covered by insurance. That is why players tend to be banned from motorbikes, as riding one breaches the insurance.}

24 Jun 2015 11:35:53
Does it cost more to insure certain players?

Sturridges insurance must cost a lot?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it costs more usually based on injury history and wages.}

Could the speed that the firmino deal was done suggest a deal has been reached for sterling but it's being kept quiet until we got a replacement? Similar to what happened when bale went to Madrid, the worst kept secret in history

Believable5 Unbelievable1

24 Jun 2015 11:41:44
Probably looks like it. With Firmino joining lallana, Ibe, Markovic and Coutinho in the attacking midfield ranks, Sterling imo is now surplus to requirements and anything more than 40 million GBP for him would represent brilliant business for the club and give us the necessary cash to sign a quality CF which looks to be Bacca right now. The club needs a CF now, not Sterling so i hope it is Bacca in, Sterling out.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 16:03:58
With you, Buzzer! If Bacca is the guy which I hope he is because he is just perfect for the high press system we wanna play under Pepin then Ayre, get on your bike and get it done NOW.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:57:18
Its amazing how a good signing like Firminio can lift the mood and the optimism of fans, great bit of business and great how we just went out and got the deal done. Now i don't know why and i may be adding numbers up here and getting fantasy answers but i can't shake the feeling that someone else is pulling the strings now (not the dreaded transfer committee) other than rodgers. As one of the eds commented earlier he normally takes the plaudits for what is seen as a successful moves like the Firminio one that would put him into the hearts of the public. Now as i said i'm probably thinking out of the box but what do you guys think of this thought, that Firminio could be a caveat in what could lead to Klopp appointment as in he's picking the targets.
as i said its and out there thought but this is the crazy season after all.
keep up the good work eds.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

24 Jun 2015 11:39:19
Wishful thinking mate, but I believe one of the eds mentioned that there would be constraints on Rodgers as regards to media from now on

24 Jun 2015 10:44:27
Morning Eds
Just wanted to ask you a quick question if I may.
Witn the likelihood being that Sterling leaves and the fact that our main targets are likely to be foreign, do you think that the main attraction of Ings and Milner weren't that they were free but were also English and would help maintain our homegrown quotient?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - good question, but Ings was targeted in January, so I would suggest it is more of a bonus regarding him. Plus there is no homegrown quotient as such, it is just that you can only have 18 (if I am remembering correctly) that are not homegrown. You do not have to have 7 homegrown players, you can leave a gap in the squad if you choose. We already have a fair few to fill the homegrown quotient, Hendo, Allen, Sturridge, for instance. I doubt it is any more than a plus if the player happens to be fit in the homegrown category.}

24 Jun 2015 11:24:04
Thanks for the reply Eds. Have to say that it's great to come on and read some optimism for a change. Get Bacca and Kovacic and ecstasy may be on the cards. Thanks for putting up with us lot eds it is appreciated.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - it is much nicer to edit when it is positive!!}

24 Jun 2015 12:17:27
Hendo, flanno, sturridge, ibe, wisdom, lallana, ings, Gomez, lambert. I think were the only club that doesn't have to think about out homegrown quota!

Agree2 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:42:39
So apparently according to Ed001 Bacca's our first choice target for a striker and Kovacic deal is pretty much done (correct me if I'm wrong Ed) although Inter can (and would like to pull the plug as long as they get rid of other players). Let's hope that the Firmino signing is the start of a new era of transfer dealings and we get these players in as soon as possible!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is not a case of pulling the plug, the deal is on the table but they are looking to avoid it. So it hasn't been switched on to have the plug pulled yet.}

24 Jun 2015 11:46:49
Are there any indications that they would manage to move someone else, ed? After the Kondogbia transfer I have a feeling that things are slowly starting to move for a Kovacic to LFC transfer.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they have interest in Hernanes, so that might scupper it.}

24 Jun 2015 11:53:08
Why are we struggling to get the kovacic over the line?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - because we upset Inter with the way we went about it. Completely the opposite to the way we have dealt with the Firmino deal.}

24 Jun 2015 13:22:31
Okay, thanks for answering. Hopefully we learn or have learnt :) No sense in the way we have been acting with other clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 16:07:53
Another feather in the cap for our reputation for being disrespectful to other clubs. Arsenal did the same thing with that stupid offer for LS and we said, "Go fly a kite!" to the gunners so who can blame Inter for not wanting to deal with us?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The offer from Arsenal was far from stupid - it met the termination clause and Suarez was desperate for a move there - and threatened the club with legal action.}

24 Jun 2015 10:36:56
Wheres brendan rodgers? He seems awfully quiet consideri g all the new faces and the new tour announcements. not heard a peep since the managers review.

It seems he has awoken from the coma the dentist 'accidentally' induced a few weeks back (you may remember me informing you of the situation).

However he is apparently suffering from Amnesia and was last seen outside Swansea City's training ground having a fist fight with Garry Monk. Joe Allen has been notified and it's expected he'll get the next flight out to pick Brendan up and take him back to their secret home in Kirkby. Colin Pascoe is delighted Brendan has forgotten about the last year and is hoping to seduce Brendan with a candle lit dinner when he returns.

Yeah because so many other PL managers are talking to the media right now. Get off the man's back. When he f^%$s something up again have a pop. Until then give it a rest. It's not even banter. There's nothing original about a jibe about a) His teeth b) His way with words or c) His desire to play Firmino in goal. I'm going all out and saying he has a nicer more lovable agent.

He is one of us now, Sterling can't wait to go and has rubbished our name a la Suarez. So of course he is better. Yep that's all it takes they want to be here or they don't.

But jesting aside. He looks a more accomplished player. He is becoming as regular an international as Raheem, but in a better and I would guess more respected National side.

But Sterling is to cost twice the ££s. Don't see him as twice the player though.

The first game firmino plays there will be anticipation, and excitement, it raises the crowd which raises the team. Exotic name, big money, I haven't even seen him play more than twice, but I am excited.
Sterling would not have that affect if he played, and of firmino hits the ground running it will raise the belief in the squad and fans.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 12:12:58
Based on the matches I saw (on tv) I would say Firmino is marginally better with greater potential and upside. He is more mobile and has a bigger range on the field, than Sterling, so he'll stretch out opposing defenses more. And I think he is tougher and bounces off defenders and tackles far more than Sterling (the second most fouled player this past season). Firmino is also more tenacious in pressing opposing defenders, a la Suarez, and that is crucial in giving the midfield time and space to set up and defend.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 13:30:11
Firmy is closer to coutinho than sterling tbh, he has better vision, better tackler and better decision making in the final third than sterling. So based on that yes he is, but he is also three years older so it is to expected. One would imagine that sterling would develop those qualities over the next three years so its not a straight comparison. We have more than made up for the loss of sterling though and he could go to to be a superstar if managed correctly.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 18:52:53
From what little I've seen I think Firmino has a quicker football brain and can produce good quality, fast paced link up play and quick one-twos etc (assuming the players around him can work with that of course)- whereas Sterling usually seems to need more time to think about where he will pass, thus allowing the opposition time to gather their wits and close things down.

Sterling might have more pace, but Firmino has a quicker brain and quicker feet, and he seems to have a really great touch (at times), in fact at times his quick passing looks like that of suarez or coutinho.

In terms of end product, last season they both got 7 league goals and a similar number of assists, but all round Firmino looks a better finisher, a sharper player all round, more energetic and more incisive, and a quicker and better passer of the ball.
But you have to also look at the team making a player look good. Everything depends on whether Firmino has a team around him who will make the sort of runs and passes that his hoffenheim teammates make.

If he plays in a team who are as laboured and as lacklustre as lfc played for 2/3 of last season, he might look quite poor, as sterling looked.
That said, personally I think Firmino is the better player of the two at this point in time, and by some way.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:30:08
Eds Thanks for your extraordinary work.
After reading the posts of fellow reds i couldn't stop myself posting.

First of all its good to see some positivity on here for once! seems like it has been lacking for the past few months!

My question is, is it realistic we could actually get him? what wages would he want etc?

Also if that was true surely we should be signing Medel anyday now? we can dream.

Unless my memory is fading, Is the Firmino deal the first where those original FSG statements of 'money to compete with anyone' the first one which cements that?

Yeah we over paid for Lallana, Lovren but we tried low offers, we upset Saints and by all accounts both players forced their moves.

This deal feels like a big transfer of Chelsea, Utd or City. Just go in, get it done and as soon as you've geard the link he's then gone and signed.

This just gives me a feeling of trust with FSG, they have done exactly what they said they could do. Nice feeling.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 11:21:41
Yeah aside from what I said in the OP. It does seem a different strategy.

The different shows between the team mates Coutinho and Firmino. Coutinho was unestablished, not regular international for Brazil and fringe player at Inter. A young 'prospect' and a bargain at the time.

Stroll on 2 seasons or less. Firmino, the next level of transfer. Established name linked with top clubs, regular current international for Brazil, regular important player at club. Approaching finished article, although still both young and areas to improve. A high fee, £21m + add ons.

I guess we bought and turned Coutinho into Firminos level (with his own desire n quality) whereas we now bought that instead.

All this and believe me I'm not trying to put pressure on his arrival. I just hope he succeeds as we expect.

24 Jun 2015 10:06:14

24 Jun 2015 13:42:12
Let's not be greedy, I'd love a proven striker but if we can't find the right guy we have enough talent to provide for Ings and Origi until Studge is fit.

I'd like to see some outs now, Sterling, Enrique, Balotellil Skrtel and Allen and the ones i'd want to leave. If Coates and Borini can find good clubs as well then I think we will have a great squad if believing our youngsters are as good as we hear for cover.

Striker nice, but not a deal breaker for me In terms of transfer window happiness.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:04:44
we need a proven striker. we can not rely on sturridge,he can get injured again and then we will blame rodgers for not signing anyone. i think bacca is a best choice. double figures in two seasons for sevilla, runs like a mad. i wanted him last season as he is most similar player to suarez(although not that level) and he will score. also he is a winner and has european experiance. also as he is 29 soon his fee wouldn't be that high. and we could have 3 very good seasons in him

Believable1 Unbelievable2

24 Jun 2015 11:29:45
His fee will be as high as £22m which the papers suggest. Is that not high for 29 yrs old?
I'm happy we have enough prospects and young upcoming stars etc. to go for proven experiance is refreshing and like van Persie to Utd. It's not 'cheap' but if it results in trophies and close challenges then it's money well spent.

I believe the saying you buy cheap, you buy twice. Bacca ain't cheap and at 29 he is 3 seasons away from being at the age (in football)!where decline gets mentioned. But, he is proven and 3 good seasons of goals, maybe that's all we need him for to return to being contenders or better.

Fees are only expensive when they fail. If we had the best defensive record last season and either won the title or just got pipped, Lovren would have been a good buy. If Ballotelli won the golden boot for his 40 goals £16m would be a bargain etc.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - in 3 seasons we would want to be looking at him moving to a rotation player so Sinclair can step up anyway. That is when it makes sense to buy a player like him.}

Just a general comment, question.

I thought with the introduction of ffp that it was supposed to be the end of inflated transfer fee. It seems to me that with the talks of ronaldo a 29 year old fantastic player at 100 million euros and some of the other prices like benteke at £32 million that transfer fees are continuing to spiral out of control. Admitting I can't think of a way of stopping this, I just wondered what the eds thought?

{Ed001's Note - it would only stop transfer fees going up if revenue stopped going up. Increased revenue means increased transfer fees.}

Hey ed01 - how do you see Sturridge's long term future in the club? Are there any new updates about his recovery, and do you think that he would be able to rediscover his great form in the future?
If we are getting another striker in, then it would on one hand allow us to ease him in slowly, so I do hope that long-term, Sturridge can get back on his feet.
Also, I do not like the news about Marcovic, I was hoping he would push forth this season, but mayhaps with increased competition a loan would be the best for him. In your opinion, is there a chance he would make it at our club - if not this year, then the one after? He has the potential, his pass is good, the problem for me is mostly his abysmal shooting, and the fact that he does not quite fit in out system (not that there was such a thing last year). However, he has shown willingness to play further back than he ought to, and I like his passing game.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I would think it will depend on his ability to stay fit. If he can stay fit, I do not see any issues with him regaining his form. I believe Sturridge is best when he has a partner to work with, so bringing in a forward to play with him is not an issue in my opinion. It is purely his fitness that will end up deciding his future in my opinion.
I like Markovic's attitude, his willingness to work hard and play out of position, but I am not sure he is anywhere near ready for the Prem. If his attitude when did play is any indication though, I am sure he can make the improvements needed, if he gets game time on a regular basis. He does need a lot of work though, he is severely lacking when he gets in dangerous areas, which should be the positions he is at his best.}

24 Jun 2015 09:42:55
Morning Ed001 if you don't mind, how do you think Brendan will line up in terms of formation this season based on the squad he's got
I can see it being best as a 4-2-3-1

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - that is what I see it as too. I believe the management wanted Kovacic/Can to sit alongside Hendo/Milner, with an attacking 3 permed from Lallana/Ibe/Firmino/Coutinho etc.}

24 Jun 2015 10:17:02
I think we'll revert back to the 4-4-2 diamond that served us so well, Lucas DMF, Henderson & Milner CM, Coutinho AMF, with Firmino in the false 9 role alongside ???? (Bacca) or Sturridge (if ever fit again).

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:17:14
I agree with the formation mentioned, which in my opinion spells the end for Allen and possibly Lucas if we continue our interest in Kovocic. Rossiter would then be used as back up to Can/Kovocic. I'm also puzzled by the interest in Clyne (Decent player) when we have extended Wisdoms contract which suggests he has been given some reassurances for playing time. There is also Flannagan returning from injury in the coming months and I'm guessing Manquillo will be on his way. Looking like a lot of player's will be leaving over the next few weeks.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 11:00:46
Would love to see midfield of Can/Hendo/Milner and then Coutinho sitting behind Studge/Firmino in a diamond setup.

Think that's our best formation to make the most of Coutinho's vision (2 upfront making runs), but I also suspect it's going to be a 4-2-3-1 as BR seems to prefer.

Either way with Firmino/Llalana/Coutinho we have three seriously creative/talented scoring attacking mids. looking forward to the season!

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 11:00:46
I agree too but we do have the players to shift between 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-3-3 and 3-4-2-1 as required. The key is deciding which one is our default and only adapting when strictly necessary. Just wonder whether this signing will mean a loan for Markovich? Just can't see him getting enough games ahead of the others in the squad. And with that level of investment we need to keep his value up by allowing him to play football.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 11:37:21
Like Moreno at LB. Wisdom is the only RB. Manquillo will leave. Flanno is injured and recovering, possibly not at the level required? As he can cover both backs let's hope he returns as good as before.

But with Wisdom, Flanno, Randall, McLaughlin. I'm really surprised more aren't calling for a LB rather then looking forward to Clyne?

Linked with Digne, I'd see him or another more of a priority, if we don't then I'm worried Sakho or Ilori will be played there, even Ibe? Still, would take any over Enrique.

It is good signing.

24 Jun 2015 09:30:25
Very happy with Firmino.
I wonder if we will go back to the diamond formation now?
I can see RF filling in the Suarez role. Coutinho at the tip of the diamond.
Ings or Sturridge as the other striker.
Hendo and Milner the midfield engine
Can as the slightly more mobile defensive midfielder.

I think it could work well, it certainly did last time but was countered by people man marking Gerrard. Can would be a bit more difficult to man mark.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - it would also help that Hendo has shown himself capable of those 'Hollywood' passes Gerrard was famous for. So marking out Can would not stop him just playing it simple to Hendo to play the pass.}

24 Jun 2015 09:57:56
Ed1 do you see Henderson improving even more without Gerrard next season?

Agree4 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - yes, it will free him up.}

Hi eds . It's been that long since I posted I had to change my password lol .
I was wondering if you knew much about the youth set up. I was watching my son at training last night and there was a kid doing his own training session over in the corner of the field . I am from Durham . I have heard he was at Newcastle and they had really high hopes for him but the story yesterday was he is moving to Liverpool . Just wondered if your knowledge went that deep into the club . Sorry if it's a daft question . Cheers

Hi eds

To sum up the Firmino signing, which clubs apart from Liverpool and United were interested? Did Liverpool push a lot harder for him than United? Seems odd that we were able to attract him if other clubs like United were interested.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Man City tried to sign him but he turned them down for a number of reasons. United enquired but did no more, though they might well have done later in the window, hence why I think we just went and got him done now, rather than risking losing him.}

24 Jun 2015 09:55:23
Makes a change tho ed, right?

Agree4 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - a nice change at that.}

24 Jun 2015 09:58:19
According to the Official LFC site they state that they beat off strong competition from many suitors from the prem and Europe. So sounds to me that he had a lot of options to consider before choosing us. Nice to see us going in and acting so decisively in capturing his signature.

24 Jun 2015 10:57:43

It seems that the planets aligned for us to sign Firmino.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 09:14:40
Eds - Last summer transfer window Suarez was sold, everyone new we were loaded and we probably overpaid for Lallana (Though I rate him and think He'll come good), Markovic, Loveren etc.
Is the signing of Firmino and possibly Bacca & Kovacic etc. before we've parted with Sterling for big money a sign that he club has learned a lesson here.
Contrariwise, if £29m is an overpayment for Firmino, has it not made any difference??

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it really does seem like we have begun to learn lessons, examining each move and seeing what we could have done better. While it may be seen as an overpayment, you have to pay what it takes to improve the team, rather than just filling in the squad.}

24 Jun 2015 10:03:04
Considering the lad's quality at the age of 23 and establishing himself as a Brazilian international, his value is going to rocket if he keeps up his previous form and makes an impression in the PL. The £29M transfer fee may seem like a bargain over the coming seasons.

Agree4 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 12:32:53
Have to agree, considering we're holding out for £50M for Sterling and Villa want roughly £32M for Benteke can't see £29M being a bad amount to pay for a relatively proven 23yr old.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 09:13:27
Question for ed 001 please,

Do you think firmino ha been signed to play up front primarily or in midfield? He plays further up for Brazil but more in midfield for hoffenheim

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - second striker I think. Though it will depend on the game, but I expect the intention is to play him off Sturridge, Ings or even Origi (or a. n. other brought in) to create more space in midfield, as it will force someone from the opposition midfield to drop off and look after him. If they don't it will mean the forward line has more freedom to create havoc. So should be win win, so long as the manager is brave enough to stick with it.}

24 Jun 2015 10:00:26
Will the manager have any say in the matter Ed001, seems a lot of things are being taken away from him. Who knows maybe the way we play is out of his hands too!? Just a thought.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am trying to find out what is happening in that respect, as this summer seems to be going on entirely without him. The fact that he is not even trying to take credit, which he normally does for anything good, for this signing, is out of character to say the least.}

24 Jun 2015 09:11:41
Hi Ed001. Firmino looks decent but just worries me where the signing leaves Lallana, Markovic, Ibe etc (assuming Sterling leaves). Could you see Firmino playing the '7' role as a second striker off Ings or Studge?

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I expect Markovic will be sent on loan if a good one can be found. I think you are correct, Firmino will play behind the striker.}

24 Jun 2015 11:59:54
No disrespect but if Sterling is moving why would we be willing to move on Markovic? His personal preference or Brendaned?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - because he has dropped behind Ibe anyway. So he needs to get some game time. Nothing to do with Rodgers, he just hasn't made the hoped for impact.}

24 Jun 2015 12:35:49
Considering the formations that have been played and the development of Ibe is Markovich likely to end up as a total spare or does he still have a chance to make his mark? (Personally I did think he was unnecessary considering existing options but haven't seen enough to see if ultimately it might be someone else to move on).

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it really depends on how he develops.}

24 Jun 2015 13:53:26
He's clearly talented but the Premier League is a big step up week on week compared to Portugal and, let's be honest, he joined a team that struggled from the off. He needs a loan to regain some form and confidence. It rather reinforces Ed02's comments about Chelsea not thinking he was ready. Wouldn't write him off yet though.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 09:05:54
Hi eds,

Its feels great to have signed Firmino. Just want to know whether he will deployed as an attacking midfielder(replacement for Sterling) or a forward by Rodgers?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it will depend on the game as to where he will play.}

24 Jun 2015 09:02:31
Without trying to complicate myself or anyone else discussing money do the ED'S think our current business is based on sterling moving? I think I read somewhere down the page that we have a genuine interest in a out & out striker & rb looks to have been targeted(clyne) & the constant links with kovacic however real or not keep appearing. I really can't see all 3 potential signings happening without some major players leaving. I.e sterling, skate, boring so on so fourth.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - only in terms of we have to replace him as well as doing our normal business.}

24 Jun 2015 10:10:18
Do you believe we need to replace Sterling if he leaves ed? We do have tons of players in midfield that can also play as a wide forward (coutinho, Lallana, Firmino, Markovic, Ibe). If so who do you think the club might target to replace him?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I believe we have already replaced Sterling now, Firmino and Milner cover all the roles he held in the side.}

24 Jun 2015 10:13:05
To be honest I expect a mass clear out or at least an attempt at one because we have a lot of fringe players that we do not need and that can sell for decent money. I still expect players like balotelli, lambert, borini, manquillo, Enrique, Coates, Alberto, illori/wisdom, sterling and possibly even Lucas (should be Allen moving on but Allen accepts the squad player role and Lucas won't, plus he gets injured too consistently unfortunately, otherwise he should be first choice midfielder) to all be sold or at least moved on.

With a few others going out on loans. The reason everything seems a bit packed at the moment is because none of these players have been moved on yet, partly due to the fact the transfer window hasn't really opened yet. Once we do get rid of most if not all these players plus a couple more signings that squad will look a lot better.

Agree0 Disagree1

24 Jun 2015 09:01:57
Hi Eds, couple of questions on same subject, just your opinions please.

Chelsea's announced interest in Sterling and stating they would not pay more then £40m. How does this affect anything if it does?

City have bid more, with add ons and expected to bid again higher. If Sterling prefers London, Mourinho etc can he force a move for a lower fee?

Could you see a player plus cash deal, which in value is closer to our required £50m and at the same time cash wise near what Chelsea quoted?

Could you also expect us to have a preferred destination for him? I'm assuming London is his preference and aware of this Chelsea hold the cards.

And last one, if he were to join either how do you see it working? Is he a starter in both squads just walking straight in (£50m you'd think he would). Is he really ready for their level, can you see him maybe being looking average or even failing like Torres. Or can you see this move turning him into Hazard level?
Thank for your time

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - It affects them paying more, but that is all.
He could try and make it difficult and try and force the move, but it is unlikely that will happen, he knows he would find it much easier to get in City's team than Chelsea's.
No.
Our preferred destination is the team which pays the most not called Man Utd.
He would replace Navas at Citeh, he would compete with Willian, Oscar and Cuadrado at Chelsea. I think he would be much better going to City.}

24 Jun 2015 10:03:45
Cheers 001. I appreciate it was a good few questions, but they were all just buzzing around my head.

I see Rob Jones (loved him, shame about those shins) says it's more Sterlings loss then ours. I get some ex players still love our club and supporters, but on this occasion I agree. Don't doubt his talent, but now I see him as a trouble maker and last season he had many poor games especially in big games, I don't feel the loss like Torres or Suarez to the team. Both clearly wanted out too, but both contributed to us being a dangerous challenger.

He will no doubt win medals and trophies, but I think the price tag, expectation playing a factor. At 20 I've already seen him through hands in the air, but of disinterest at times and with that agent in two years if he is not happy for any reason. well. I don't see him becoming the next Messi or Ronaldo, John Barnes or Ryan Giggs.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I actually think you are right to a degree, I think he would have been better staying for his career progression. I do think he will do well if he goes to City, but it will tail off as he will be allowed more freedom and I think he will end up not becoming the player he could have been. If he did end up at Chelsea, I think Mourinho would set him straight and he could raise his game to a whole new level.}

24 Jun 2015 11:41:00
Thanks. I think you're more likely right then me. I'm just a little bitter with Sterling, so am more hopeful of failure then the likelihood of it happening.

Shrewd bit of business there lads get in! the link up between firmino and coutinho has been awesome to watch during the copa and freindly games I see trouble for defences around the world with firmino and coutinho in there and if Rodgers don't work out the new boss will have some gems to work with, what a difference a day makes.

Did we realize that the way we messed Inter about was not the way to go and so we just went in and outbid everyone and got the deal done? Could the way we handled the Firmino deal have a positive impact on us completing the Kovacic deal?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I would like to think we learnt a lesson from that. I don't see how it could relate to the Kovacic deal now though?}

Hat's off to LFC, what an excellent addition to the team. I've seen a scouting compilation video about him an apart from his skill and goal scoring, he is very strong (opposing defenders trying to kick him off the ball and he still beats 2 or 3). Add to this his passing and vision looks equally fantastic. Well done again Liverpool and I'm looking forward to seeing him turn out for us.

Hi Eds

With the signing of Firmino please tell me this puts to bed any move for benteke!! let's just hope this proves we are learning by our mistakes as he would of been yet another one!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - not related, Benteke interest was for a different role and it was shelved a while back. Hence the recent interest shown in Bacca and Rondon.}

24 Jun 2015 09:22:44
Really hope its Bacca ED001. Have only seen him play a couple of times but he strikes me as a Suarez/Tevez type of player who runs between lines and can also drag defenders out wide allowing his teammates to run through the centre. Decent pace and bucket full of goals. Beats Rondon any day for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am not a fan of Rondon at all. He reminds me of what Andy Carroll would play like if he was on valium when I have watched him. Big and strong but slow and lacking any movement at all. If we do get him, I just hope that the times I have seen him I have misjudged him or he was carrying an injury which hindered him, otherwise it would be a huge mistake.}

24 Jun 2015 09:33:28
Bacca all day long for me. If we cannot get Tevez or Aubameyang, then Bacca is the next best option out there who would fit into the team seamlessly. I would prefer to see players with movement and pace than big target men at the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 10:33:17
Hi Ed1 do you think we have a chance to go for Bacca though, it looks like were learning from our mistakes that we are no longer faffing about with fees? Also do you see kovaic going through and if so do you think that will be it for our transfers? then its a case of selling of some players?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - we have a chance if we can convince him to leave behind Champions League football. As for Kovacic, I have no idea, Inter would prefer to sell someone else, and there is a long way to go there. I am told that might be it other than outs as Gomez might be instead of Clyne, but it is merely conjecture right now. In that instance it would be Wisdom given a chance to prove himself.}

24 Jun 2015 11:28:18
Great thanks Ed1 i think it would be great to get Kovacic and Bacca in, and leave it at that, it would be nice to see wisdom tearing up the field in a reds shirt he sure deserves the chance to have a shot at RB or CB cover.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I know it is not a popular view, but I like Wisdom, he has a good attitude and is very good on the ball, which is why he ended up at full back in the first place.}

24 Jun 2015 12:13:45
Yeah from what I've seen of him too he seems to be level headed player who maybe like ibe will try and improve and with him and flanagan when he's back playing RB we don't need yet more players taken up their spots that they are working hard to deserve.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 12:39:42
Ed - if Clyne did come in would that be instead of Wisdom (and potentially him moving) or the pair being allowed to compete/develop?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it would be to compete.}

24 Jun 2015 13:59:16
I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Gomez being in the first team squad next season. I've been talking to a Charlton season ticket holder who says the kid isn't phased. Slotted straight in and never looked out of place. Sometimes you get a Rooney or Owen or Sterling who gets a chance early and just takes it at the highest level. From what I've been told this kid is a bit like that. Would love to see him live up to the hype and have a great pre-season.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 08:02:20
Absolutely made up with Firmino signing he was brilliant last season and I've been watching the copa America too he's been excellent, we've got a lot of options for a fluid front three now, him Coutinho and lallana or Ings and when studge is fit a diamond with a free role for Coutinho!

Believable3 Unbelievable0

24 Jun 2015 09:00:31
Have to say I've been preaching about buying players we need. Whilst I'm not sure he fits that bill or how BR will play him he does represent an upgrade on what we have and makes the starting 11. Some optimism has crept back in for the new season!

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 09:06:27
Wow, just wow. Firminio likes to play the old Luis role just behind the striker. In the gap between the CAM and the striker. For once the transfer team need congratulations. I can't believe some are still moaning. Identified target, outbid opposition, get our man! Its what we have been crying out for. It may be a little high but would you rather wake up to find he's gone elsewhere? Let's just enjoy the positivity for a while, we don't seem to have had much lately.

Agree2 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 08:00:55
Hi Ed's,

do you see us actually going for a striker after Firmino signed? He's not an out and out striker but with Sturridge 1st choice, then Ings/Firmino as back up. maybe Origi if he doesn't go out on loan? what are your thoughts.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I still expect us to try and get one other forward yes. The interest in an out and out striker is genuine.}

24 Jun 2015 09:12:00
Ed. If the interest in an out and out striker is genuine, do you know who the number 1 target is?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I believe it is Bacca now.}

24 Jun 2015 10:02:51
Ed1 a few days/weeks ago the general view was we should not hold our breath over Bacca - has this changed?

I don't want to get too excited just because we have finally splashed some cash and made a real quality signing (subject to medical. ) but it looks like our aspirations might have changed and our fortunes along with.

What would your view be on the possibilities of

Bacca
Rondon
Kovacic
Coyne

Any others you think may be on the horizon?

I see Lacazzette rumours have surfaced again? I think it's odd if his agent is trying to talk up a move or is more about talking up a pay rise?

Many thanks once again,

Rob.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I would prefer to stick to not holding our breath, as I am extremely superstitious and the one player we signed which I wanted I was not allowing myself to dare to believe it would happen. As for Lacazette, you would be better speaking to Ed002, he would have a much better idea there.

As far as those 4, we are talking over Bacca and Rondon, but it is out there at the Copa this is going on, so really out of my reach in terms of keeping tabs. I, like all of you, are heavily reliant on Ed002 for information there. Kovacic deal is all set up ready to go, but Inter are trying to do other business so they do not have to sell him. I assume you mean Clyne and it was a typo? If so, we seem to have dropped out of that for now. Maybe it will be a deal we will return to after other business is done.}

24 Jun 2015 10:45:49
Great response there Ed, cheers!

Ed2, would be grateful if you could fill us all in!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea where you are getting any of this Lacazette stuff from.}

24 Jun 2015 07:54:45
The Firmino deal, is that also a confirmation that Sterling has been sold? Reading between the lines of course.

Should we expect that sale to be announced or are there still other clubs bids expected which might see the sale dragging?

And congrats to Ayre etc who often get bashed, by me included, they didn't low ball and alienate. Deal seemed to be rapid like we see with other clubs. All positives.

24 Jun 2015 08:19:20
it was rapid and wrapped up only because we offered the cash which was much more the what the player was valued at which is a good sign because if we want a player who we know will add quality there is no point bargaining and streching the deal. kudos to entire transfer team for getting it done and quick. also glad the lad chose us.

yes its good to see some +ve vibes. i mean lallana coutino firmino it just seems an excellent attacking trio. Oh i can just imagine the fluidity and skill in the attacking third the trio can bring. They can be all over the attacking third just harassing defenders.
Now just some good defensive training and stratergy with 4 at back will sort out our problems. we don't need to buy anyone i believe ,just practice more and play with a solid RB LB and two CB.

Positive bants by the best fans in the world.

Good to see positivity back it's a must easier read for me but one swallow and all that jazz, we need to ship out the players that we don't want and the one that does not want us , I wish them all the best etc etc except when playing us . I don't know much about our new lad but he seems to be a decent player by all reports

24 Jun 2015 07:22:45
Wow, Firmino huh ☺️ (I know I'm late, I didn't know until this morning.) I'm very happy tbh, he's a good signing! Well done to the committee for getting this done. And thank you and well done to the Eds (particularly Ed002 in this case) for calling the interest a while ago 👏 you've done it again!

Now Ed002, is that time machine of yours available to rent? If so, what are the starting rates please? 😜

Believable4 Unbelievable0

24 Jun 2015 07:16:20
If we sign Firmino 'if', then I make that 3 first team quality number 10s. The others being Lallana, Coutinho. I can only assume 1 of them will be played wide.

Quesrion. does Firmino like to play from the left? By all accounts I've heard he is best played as a traditional n10?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Firmino can play on either flank. Why not play the 3 of them as a fluid trio that just go where there is space and fill in gaps defensively? Why have one stuck out left and one out right?}

24 Jun 2015 08:21:02
Eds if we play all 3 across the front with an out and out striker. Doesn't thatlikely limit us to 4 at the back? I thought initially BR was looking to stick with the 3 centrebacks and 2 wingbacks?
Do you think the new coach (Lijnders?) will be able to sort the defensive mess?
I'm a bit worried we are just trying to do 13/14 again and forget about defense and go all out attack and attempt to score more,without addressing the issue which could see a well balanced team.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have heard nothing about whether we are going back four or three, but I would be very surprised if we did not play a back four next season. Lijnders can help, but it really comes down to the head coach to set the right tactics to get the most out of the defence.}

24 Jun 2015 08:21:13
That's a fair point 01. I would be happy with that, as long as everyone understood that role. It worked well when we had Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho/Sterling interchanging!

If we follow up in reported interest in an out and out striker, do you see us going 4-4-2 diamond?

I'd like to see us be more versatile and change between the diamond and 4-3-3 as and when needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I would expect more of a 4-2-3-1. Two sitting in front of the defence allowing the front four more freedom.}

24 Jun 2015 08:22:27
I agree with ed but then no room for ibe and he needs to start games for him to progress

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Ibe could surely act as one of those 3?}

24 Jun 2015 08:47:10
Cheers ed001. Agree. I hope we go a back 4 and play more of a 4-2-3-1. It will be interesting to see what happens when Studge is fit again and whether one of thos front 3 gets dropped,or he choses play play him sparingly.All questions for further down the road I feel.
^^^^Agree above Ibe should slot in nicely across those 3 from what I saw this season at Derby and us. (Feel slightly sorry for markovic,who it looks more and more likely may warm the pines,or get force into another role)

How is it we offered 29m pounds as suggested on most news, when Hoffenheim was happy with just 20m??

Believable3 Unbelievable0

not lfc related but dmitri payet is moving to west ham for cheap.( or may be not )
i think he had an astonishing season for marsielle. goals assists, free kicks, he seems a real good player.
we didn't even have a look at him. eds just wondering is it true that some french clubs sell players to bigger clubs at very high prices while the same player is made available to other clubs at reasonable price ? i even feel stupid writing this but i read it somewhere.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it was a comment by one particular owner that English clubs will pay more that dates back a number of years now. I am not even sure that owner is still around and it was only about players he didn't want to sell, he was saying he would ask ridiculous money and get it from English clubs.}

Ed001, I have been reading with interest lately in regards to Ilori. A little while back it was mentioned that we wanted to sell, and we overpriced him etc etc, and I thought he was destined to be playing somewhere else next season and beyond. It seems now that there has been a change somewhere inside the club where it seems now, judging by some of the Ed's comments that, that he will be staying, which I am excited about by the way, and has will be given first team opportunities. Can you expand on where this change of heart on Ilori came from within the club? I am assuming if I read some comments correctly, that it wasn't a Brendan decision that he stays and will be given game time, but a decision made by others and a scenario that Brendan will be forced to use him? Hope you can elaborate. Thanks in advance.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am of the opinion, but this is only an opinion as I can't get it confirmed right now, that it is to do with an agreement between the club and Skrtel to sell Skittles. Certainly contract talks were shelved between Skrtel and Liverpool after an agreement of some kind was made. Newspapers were saying it was a new contract agreed, but having heard that his agent has offered him around Europe in recent weeks, I think it is more likely that there has been an agreement to part ways. I think this has led to a rethink of Ilori, as it makes no sense to buy a replacement when we potentially have one already contracted to the club.}

24 Jun 2015 09:12:20
Cheers, Thanks Ed! The sudden about face on Ilori had me confused as he seemed certain to leave. As you said its only your opinion but what you said seems to make sense.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it seems to make sense to me as well, we were inviting offers one minute, the next telling him he will get a new contract if he performs well and will be given his chance. It does seem the only explanation that someone must be leaving to make space for him.}

24 Jun 2015 05:16:44
Imagine this coming days FSG decide to part ways with Rodgers? or telling him that we like to continue with you but if only you agree to no2 role? after announcing Firmino and co signings. this would have been a fortune turning decision by FSG and they could win many friends and even get a song from the kop. to Sakho & Ilori raters, don't harm yourselves and the club progression. despite their potential, the potential of reliability is not there and they are likely to get crook and miss games on season process. to me Skrtel is a v.good defender, reliable and adaptive as he played under different managers here, winning lfc best player of the year under the previous manager. it is apparent that defensive set up and positioning is coachable along with any system, Guadiola, Mou etc are doing it which Rodgers has fail in his 3yrs here, despite the personality at the back, Rodgers defense is always at lost. we will lament Skrtel departure.

If this firminho transfer goes through will that affectively end the pursuit of kovacic?
Or seen as there both totally different players there's room for both?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would not try to complicate matters that way.}

24 Jun 2015 00:28:06
I am just hoping Chelsea don't at the last moment decide to step in and take Firmino off our hands! It will bring back bad memories! lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea have been approached repeatedly about the player and have said no, so don't worry about that.}

24 Jun 2015 00:24:02
HI Eds
I think attracting Firmino is great and not someone i thought would potentially come to us. I see some mentioning £20 million though and while i am not asking for costs etc i think its closer to £40 million.
Anyhow my question is do you think, while very talented, he is the player we need?
Do you rate him

Also i personally hope Lucas stays and we end up with 3 brazilians to keep him company!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Firmino is certainly a decent player and a good addition. Not sure how he will be used.}

24 Jun 2015 00:00:24
So Eds - with a deal for Firmino agreed in principle, do you think this may help Lucas to stay ? Surely it helps his ambitions and Coutinhos too for their national squad ? Brazil coach will have to watch a few Liverpool matches to keep his eye on Firmino, Couts and Lucas (if Bodgers ever plays him)

Cheers
RedTed

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It makes no difference to Lucas - and if he leaves it will be yet another appalling move by the club who persuaded him to stay in January. One player has already been kicked in the gonads by the club this summer - it would be a far from neat idea to do it again.}

24 Jun 2015 02:08:00

23 Jun 2015 23:56:27
Eds,

How many players do you think we will buy this summer. Its already seeming like a fair few (5 already if firminho is confirmed)

+ potentially kovacic.

Do you think we will look to buy someone to replace sterling once he has gone too?

Thanks v much

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained where there is interest and would think Rodgers may look to use the new and existing resources to replace Sterling.}

24 Jun 2015 05:02:32
Looks like we haven't learnt our lesson from last year. I know people are excited, but this is looking like a shambles again. Where are the two or three absolute quality additions we need for the first team? Firmino should be a first team addition, as will Milner - but was Milner needed? Bogdan to replace Jones, Ings (with Origi coming back)another young defender? We are clueless in the transfer market.

Agree0 Disagree6

24 Jun 2015 06:29:58
Good news about Firmino but he is not the answer to our striker woes, and neither is Ings. Unless we sign a top striker this window, i do not expect us to make the top4 next season either as goals win u matches, and our midfielders simply do not score enough to compensate for the lack of a world class striker. Hopefully Bacca is next on the list rather than Kovacic who imo would be a luxury signing at this point.

Agree2 Disagree0

24 Jun 2015 08:54:52

Ed2 IF we pull of Firmino does it mean Fsg have opened up the candy store again and were going to get fined or are they spending hoping sterling money covers it all over time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool remain under observation from UEFA as I have explained. The impact of what happens post June 30 with Firmino etc. won't be clear until next season, but there will be sales.}

23 Jun 2015 23:48:32
I know we tend not to talk about money, but the £29m reported on the BBC just seems unbelievable!

Surely they must be talking about total value of transfer rather than just the transfer fee?

Not saying he isn't worth that, but the reports to date had the fee pegged so much lower?

Are you able to clarify at all Eds?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained the situation as far as I need to.}

23 Jun 2015 22:54:01
Is it me or does it clearly state on the bbc website that we just shelled out £29million on firmino? I hope they mean euros which would sound about right (£20mill). If it is £29 mill then we will become an even bigger laughing stock than we already are.

Believable2 Unbelievable8

24 Jun 2015 02:50:58
I know what you mean, Kman.

However, look at Sterling for £50m or Di Maria for £60m or Ozil for £40m.

Even if it is £29m rather than €29m, if he helps us kick on to the top 4, so be it.

Using overly simplistic maths (and I know this is not how it works, but let's just speculate):

Sterling out for £45m (say)
Borini for £10m
Coates for £5m
Skrtel for £8m
Balotelli for £8m (at best, I reckon, and maybe a loan)

£76m in

Firmino in for £29m
Kovacic for £16m
Bacca for £18m
Clyne for £13m
Ings for £8m
Milner for free (albeit with hefty signing on fee I would imagine)
Bogdan for free (probably a relatively small signing on fee)

£84m out

Net spend of £8m plus agents fees, signing on fees (esp Milner) and other add ons per Ed002's explanations.

I can think of worse transfer windows, not least 12 months ago.

I also suspect there will be a few more outs, although I hope we hang on to Lucas, Wisdom and Illori.

In terms of salary bill, we won't know about that until the next set of accounts (or the ones after that), but we have lost some immense salaries in Gerrard and Johnson, plus I can't believe Skrtel and Balotelli are on small weekly deals.

Trying to do some simple matching on salary costs (please don't cringe too much Ed002!), Gerrard will cover Milner, Johnson should cover Clyne & Ings, Jones will cover Bogdan, Balotelli for Firmino (maybe?), Skrtel and Borini to cover Kovacic, so therefore, barring any other outs, we have a net increase in salary of Bacca's salary. But hey, I'm just guessing! I would imagine the club will have thought of things like this, lol!

Just speculation, but hey, its what we do best!

Everything crossed but it seems the Firmino deal is going through. I was wondering if the Eds know what this would mean for the rest of the summer deals?

Do we need to sell Sterling to pay for Formino or could a high profile signing convince Sterling to stay?

Is there money to make other high profile signings this window (such as Kovacic) or will this be it?

Have to agree about Sterling Ed002.
I feel he has been unduly influenced by Ward and if the club has any sense will not deal with the parasite in the future even if the player involved is world class and on offer for stupid sums.
He may think he has done a good job in getting a move for Sterling, bt it will hamper him in the future IMO and will find it difficult for teams to deal with him.

We've all read the firmino reports at this stage and hopefully after you've flushed away your used tissues you'll read give your take on my observation.

Despite now knowing it's not the useful and reliable source it once was I still tend to go into the echos site each day.

I've been on it a couple of times today and all they had about firmino was a report about Liverpool being linked with him, bacca and rondon, the Eds have been answering questions all day as a result. only after reading these reports coming out in the last hour or so I decided to go back into the echo site and all of a sudden they too are saying a deal is agreed but the part that caught my attention is the time they claim the report was published. 1.45pm today.

Now I've been on that site since then and that report was nowhere to be seen and only appeared after it broke from another source.

Anyone else notice this????!

I've never seen Firmino before but if he's anything like Couthino like some say on here, I just want to say great business as a replacement for Sterling.
Any fast person can knock the ball past a player and beat him to the ball, no disrespect to Sterling either as I rate him highly. But it take a real genius to posses the skill and technical ability which Couthino has.
So if he's anything like Couthino then I'm really excited.
Here hoping the deal goes through.
C'mon Liverpool!!!

Agree0 Disagree2

23 Jun 2015 23:10:14
I have to say the Firmino deal looks more and more as it is going to happened. I hope no last minute surprises. Unlike other people here who keep on moaning about him or Kovachich this is not exactly what we need, I think this is exactly what we need.

I know that a lot of people here believe that our squad is made of 11 Ronaldos and the only reason we were rubbish last year is that BR played them our of position or is clueless more generally. Without taking anything from his responsibility to our form, I think we have several players in the team that wouldn't make it even to the bench of some of the other top4 and are just not good enough. And this include the midfield.

In any case - nothing bad in having many options - ManU have the following options in midfield: Mata, Di Maria, Carrick,Herrera, Blind, Fellaini,Janusz, Valencia Young and Depay. Most of them would have walked into our starting 11 and they are still looking for more . Why we have to have only 4-5?

The two questions left are of course what made Firmino chose us given that many CL clubs were probably interested and also what happened to the warning that we have to sell first before we buy. Not complaining at all, very happy with that, but how come it suddenly seems BR has open cheque and on the other hand there is no urgency to sell players (e.g. rejecting 40M bid for Sterling, keeping Baloteli, Toure, Skertl, Lucas etc).

Believable2 Unbelievable5

24 Jun 2015 03:10:54
A few people have said the same about our players but i disagree. Player for player we have a really strong squad, its just not being used effectively.
We are short on a quality striker but our midfield is solid and we have some good defenders. Easily as good as Man u, and arsenal Imo, but maybe man city and chelsea have a slighlty better squad. but not much in it for me. if we can grab a great finisher

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I think the main difference is in the teams, Chelsea, City and Arsenal have a stronger first choice team, right now. Squad wise ours is as strong as anyone's. I hope we continue to work on improving the team, rather than the squad. Chelsea have shown clearly that a small tight knit squad works best. Barcelona do not use all that many players either. You need to keep a strong core that plays together consistently and develops a good understanding of the system you use, most of the time. We used too many players and too many systems, styles of play and formations.}

The thought of Coutinho and Firmino REALLY excites me. I don't even think he's what we need but when a quality player like him comes up in the market then you don't say no. He is a pure FLAIR footballer. This signing is up there with Suarez and Torres and that they have shown obvious substantial amounts of quality with a LOT more to go.

This is a step in the right direction, I hope we follow this up with perhaps Bacca and Clyne. Then focusing on shifting players out,

Man am I going to look silly if it doesn't eventually finalise.
