24 Jan 2017 22:42:02
So Coutinho is about to sign a contract extension which will see his salary doubled to nearly 160k a week with no buy out clause.

Ed, in reality, does this really mean anything? If the right offer comes along from Barcelona or Psg then no doubt he will be on his way imo.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - Right.}

25 Jan 2017 00:42:32
Pip will stay with us as long as we get CL football, he is going nowhere so don't worry.

25 Jan 2017 07:24:35
Ed
Is this not similar approach we took with Suarez?
Upped contract, increased value, cashed in?

{Ed025's Note - as i see it agger the club wants couts to stay, but i suppose it has an element of an insurance policy just in case the worst happens and that seems logical to me mate..

25 Jan 2017 12:05:25
I can see him being turned if Barcelona call (as would almost any player) but let's hope he wants to stay. him and Firmino we awesome together.

26 Jan 2017 08:12:26
Did we "cash in" on Suarez or did we get rid of a player that had dragged the clubs name through the mud too many times?

24 Jan 2017 21:02:52
Ed any chance letting them cancel the markovic loan was good faith towars carvalho haha?

Think his height and strenght could be a value asset, esecially with corners.

This is the guy who help shut out france for portugal btw!

Believable10 Unbelievable2

24 Jan 2017 23:09:03
TBH we have messed markovics career up enough should just speak with him and ask what he wants to do. do feel some what for the lad

24 Jan 2017 23:42:33
he was never really good enough IMO

25 Jan 2017 00:48:16
How have we messed his career.
Wherever the lad has gone he has struggled.
The club have always acted to find him a decent loan position with decent clubs.
He has a great chance now to prove his with as Hulls new manager plays nice football.

I hope he makes it but he reminds me of Aquitanien in many ways.
Some parts of his game were excellent but the whole package wasn't right for the prem.

A typical naive Rodgers signing thinking he could play ticki tak football in the prem.
Even Guardiola is Kopping on.

25 Jan 2017 01:49:58
I liked Lazar, didn't get given much of a chance and when he did he was out of position

25 Jan 2017 03:22:02
Isn't he still only 22? He could still come good, but a smart loan deal is in order. Perhaps Swansea?

25 Jan 2017 07:27:07
Markovic, when played centrally, provided glimpses of brilliance.

He wasnt/ isn't a winger and a failure to have a proper plan for him destroyed the lad.

P! $$ poor player management from our club which must impact others' decisions going forward

{Ed025's Note - just never cut the mustard for me agger, these things happen in football mate..

25 Jan 2017 08:16:21
I agree ed, just never really put the effort in wherever he has gone, its no surprise to me his loan in portugal was cut short. Sometimes players need to take responsibility for their own improvement and progression, this tranference of blame to the club all the time is disingenuous.

{Ed001's Note - he tried very hard for us. That was never his failing.}

25 Jan 2017 08:47:01
I don't think his sending off vs was it Basle? helped his cause.

25 Jan 2017 09:46:25
Ed002 alluded to he needed to be left alone in Portugal fora year or two more to develop more he was never ready for the move we paid well over the odds just to play him as a wingback and ruin a couple years of his career I wouldn't be surprised if he moved to Italy or Spain and did extremely well

25 Jan 2017 10:06:57
he has the chance to do very well at hull, good luck to him.

25 Jan 2017 10:26:03
I do hope he lives up to his potential. He was in the list of best young talents in Europe.

25 Jan 2017 12:08:35
We definitely messed with his career. I thought he was showing real signs of talent but he needed patience and we didn't have any, plus he's been terribly injury prone too which doesn't help. Hope he manages to get back on track and think Hull will be good chance for him to prove himself even if there will be less freedom and possession.

24 Jan 2017 20:53:25
Ed02 you've said there is a chance of a deal for William carvalho, have we even approached sporting regarding this potential transfer? Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Read the posts.}

24 Jan 2017 21:33:43
I have read them, you've said there is chance but later said we've not talked to sporting regarding carvalho so what are you implying? Thanks

{Ed002's Note - It is perfectly clear - I am not aware that Liverpool has spoken to his club about him. They previously looked at the player. Why is this so difficult to understand?}

24 Jan 2017 21:50:05
well you said "there is a chance" implying that something is happening. Thanks for your time

{Ed002's Note - That doesn't imply any such thing.}

25 Jan 2017 00:11:33
It's quite simple, ed said
1) we have looked at him in the past
2) a deal would be possible i. e. they would entertain a bid if we paid the right price
3) but he's not aware we have spoken to them about this

This seems a red herring based on the fact we were in Lisbon to talk to them about Markovic and someone's added one plus one and gotten 3

25 Jan 2017 00:34:10
Better placed clubs have come in for him in the past and he didn't leave so I don`t think he'll leave now,

25 Jan 2017 01:35:21
this is why Edd often don't wanna disclose too much. when he disclose a little. people seem to complicate things up.

25 Jan 2017 16:06:25
There is a chance that I will winning the lotto Friday night. Not very likely but there is a chance🖒

24 Jan 2017 18:18:19
Surridge signs a new contract! Ideal!

24 Jan 2017 18:47:24
Hope so

24 Jan 2017 19:34:13
Hope he does and finally cements his place in Klopps team. Would hate to see him go elsewhere. Great player.

24 Jan 2017 19:53:03
Hook line and sinker 😂😂

24 Jan 2017 19:59:32
i hope not, he is not the player he was when suarez was here and im sure we can get better in the summer maybe a player with his finishing but with the speed he has lost

24 Jan 2017 20:26:53
I think Bournemouth will benefit most from this.

24 Jan 2017 20:28:26
😂😂 Bournemouth striker Surridge 😂😂

24 Jan 2017 16:37:52
I think this William Carvalho might be true.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

24 Jan 2017 17:24:55
Sadly. It is not mate. Echo have said zero interest.

24 Jan 2017 20:31:19
Historically, the reporting from the Echo has been fantastic, but since the takeover by Trinity Mirror, It's a load of she~p!

The club don't trust them anymore as they did in the past, so I wouldn't necessarily agree with the opinion of penfold.

24 Jan 2017 21:09:15
Carvalho has been touted as a target for numerous big clubs YET he`s still at Sporting. I wonder why?

25 Jan 2017 08:26:02
James Pearce knows absolutely zilch and is constantly writing non stories for the echo. But on this matter i think he is right. Where would he play and who gets displaced for him. Some say henderson will move to one of the other midfield spots, so who gets cut for him? Wijnaldum? So why did we spend 25m on him to sit on the bench?

We are clearly focusing on another wide forward player and possibly a centre back. Klopp has already said we will not be looking for a left back with the way milner is playing and i also suspect they are waiting for juanma to be ready for the first team in a season or so.

So i believe we will wait until targets become available in the summer.

I always suspected we would struggle with the injuries and mane at afcon and be behind the pack at the end of jan. But when they are all back we will have a strong finish and cement our top four spot.

Once we are back in the champions league we may then splash the cash and buy the tent players people crave so much.

24 Jan 2017 14:33:05
Emre Can has been stalling over a new contract and believes he's worth more than Liverpool are offering.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

24 Jan 2017 14:52:37
He's entitled to do this, I don't think it should concern the fans too much.

24 Jan 2017 15:17:08
Doesn't every player think that and every player try to negotiate the best deal for themselves?

This is just called contract negotiation and happens every day.

24 Jan 2017 16:24:42
Thank god, we need to get rid of player's that keep giving the ball away.

24 Jan 2017 19:54:43
Timmy 10 touches. He will learn

24 Jan 2017 14:09:57
About 4 years ago a work friend who is Portuguese and a massive Sporting Lisbon fan, was always banging on about several of their players: Carvalho, Rojo and Ilori. They were thought of as bright prospects for the future. According to him, for a long time Lisbon had suffered by selling their best players on relatively cheaply. When Bruno De Carvalho became the new president he clamped on this and set hefty price tags on them, William Carvalho in particular. From memory he was of interest to Arsenal who I assume, thought he was overpriced. Recently he seems to have faded from the spotlight. I saw him at the euros, but didn't watch him closely. He was always though of as a defensive midfielder who was physical and a solid tackler. I don't know how he's regarded nowadays or how he'd adapt to the EPL - hopefully better than Rojo and Ilori .

Believable2 Unbelievable4

24 Jan 2017 21:20:07
I watched Carvalho through out the Euros as I`d never really seen him play and trust me, he is quite a player. People think he`s just big and strong and a brute. He may be all these but they take nothing away from IMO, a very good technical ability and good passing range he possesses.

The guy can tackle, cover ground with deceptive speed and most importantly, pass the ball long or short with either foot with ease. Danilo from Porto (another similar size to him) started the Euros ahead of him but after the 2nd game, never got his place back. Just my evaluation, Razor.

24 Jan 2017 22:59:51
Cheers Noah. I really didn't feel I could make comments about him because I've seen him little, and mostly in champions league and international football. As I said my friend said he was great technically, but the big question is will that translate to the EPL and how would he fit into a midfield 3 for us. Actually we don't even know if there's any current interest from Liverpool.

25 Jan 2017 12:24:27
Don't think it's very likely, but if he were to come in i guess it would be as a deep midfielder to backup Hendo. Probably at the expense of Lucas and Stewart.

24 Jan 2017 10:46:33
So what do we make of these William Carvalho rumours? Personally I can't quite believe this. Wrong position, powerful but not that quick.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

24 Jan 2017 13:44:09
Until 002 says it, then, carvalho who?

24 Jan 2017 13:55:54
002 has confirmed we have interest and that we could strike a deal. However what she has not confirmed is whether or not we are actually trying to do that ;)

I am not a fan of Carvalho, but if Klopp is I will trust his superior judgement.

And Pearce is a con man pretending to be in the know. He hasn't actually been reliable since Brendan left as they had a special relationship.

{Ed002's Note - I have not said that - I have said that Liverpool has previously looked at the player but I am not aware of any talks with his club about him.}

24 Jan 2017 14:15:22
I know nothing if him he any good?

24 Jan 2017 15:20:04
wrong Carvalho

actually going for Ricardo to solve our defensive issues.

24 Jan 2017 20:03:35
ed002 its amazing how some people turn your words around, i know you never said it,

24 Jan 2017 21:20:38
He's in China now for his last payday, Agger.

24 Jan 2017 23:52:51
Mbrock, I have not put words into Ed002's mouth. I have simply repeated what had been written using slightly different terminology. Ie, we have shown an interest, and a deal could be possible if we made the effort, which we currently are not doing.

I rather think Ed002 misinterpreted what I wrote (but neither of us made a big deal of it because we're adults) and you are just trying to patronise me and start something that isn't there.

I did clearly point out that Ed002 had not yet confirmed we are trying to make a deal happen, only that it is plausible due to past interest. I've not turned any words even in the slightest. Honestly, grow up.

24 Jan 2017 10:27:58
According to today's Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims Liverpool representatives have flown to Lisbon to discuss a deal for midfielder William Carvalho.
I checked to make sure it's not April 1st

24 Jan 2017 12:05:14
He is a mixture of Kante and Matic. He is a bit slow. But brilliant on the ball. A hard tackler. I would assume Hendo might swap his position to play further up alongside this fellow. He is a good player.

24 Jan 2017 12:37:48
Makes sense to me to shore up the defence. Lucas, Can and Stewart would be nervous though

24 Jan 2017 12:40:03
No truth in it mate according to some guy called James Pearce.

24 Jan 2017 12:50:16
He will not join this window 100% although there has been interest in him, I doubt he would even be signed in the summer

24 Jan 2017 13:10:21
Wish we could get him in. much better than Emre and would mean Henderson could venture forward much more often with the knowledge his back is covered. I like Emre can but he's not quite there yet.
Fingers crossed but secretly know it ain't happening unfortunately

24 Jan 2017 13:50:17
What on earth has Can done to deserve so much hate amongst "supporters".

Do people not remember that he was played out of position for pretty much the entire first season he was with us? Shoehorned into CB by Rodgers, after suffering quite a serious injury a few months after arriving.

He then got another injury and missed 6 games of the following season and has already missed 8 games of this season. All of which without getting a regular run in the team.

And he's 23! 23 years old. Maybe, just maybe, William Carvalho is better right now. But he is also a year older, he has only been out through injury once in his entire career, and has been playing every single week in his favoured position in a league that will make the better players look incredible.

People need to get some perspective. Writing someone off at 23 with his injury history and him playing an entire season in the wrong position is just ludicrous.

I still believe that Emre can be a great player, and he needs the support of the fans, he obviously loves being at the club and whilst that is still the case he has a chance to make it. The fans turn on him and he may as well pack his bags because he'll hate being here before long.

24 Jan 2017 14:10:25
No hate Red dawn, But someone has to make space for a new midfielder and atm it looks like Can.

24 Jan 2017 14:20:54
Spot on red dawn

24 Jan 2017 14:23:08
Why does someone have to make space? Why do we need a new midfielder?

There may not have been hate per se, but look through this site in the last week or so and search the web for Emre Can, Liverpool "fans" all over are calling for his head and I just don't get it.

Why kick him out to make room for someone who is not necessarily any better for the cost of yet another £30million + extras. It's lunacy.

Let the kid play some football and support him, he ain't going to improve with the fans on his back.

Henderson was the same when he came, bit raw, bit of a headless chicken but he's one of the first names on the teamsheet for me now.

24 Jan 2017 14:53:23
We need someone who can seriously challenge our best midfield 3, and preferably one that can cover Hendo at the base of midfield, particularly with Stewart and Klopp still seemingly a bit off the pace yet.

Don't believe the Carvalho rumors but wouldn't be completely shocked if we were at least thinking about options, as it's a role the team will need filling in the summer when Lucas leaves.

24 Jan 2017 15:01:28
I'd replace him with someone with more quality, that's my only issue with him, he lacks technical ability.

24 Jan 2017 15:22:02
Why do we need a new midfielder? Because we want to be better than we currently are. Coaching can only take a player so far and if we want to improve we'll need to make signings. Can has struggled this season, it could be a bad run of form or it could be he's simply not as good as we thought he was. If it's the latter then we should look for an upgrade.

24 Jan 2017 15:54:09
So when we want to be better we have to buy someone from somewhere else? Who says Can can't be a great player? He's only really had one proper season if you discount his injuries and the season he spent out of position. And he's 23? If he was still in Germany or Italy he would be viewed as one for the future, still a youngster.

Sad state of affairs if we are advocating getting rid of a 23yr old full international for the World Cup winners and 3rd ranked team in the world, and spending millions on someone just as unproven.

Jeez, Liverpool used to make great players, not purchase them.

24 Jan 2017 15:54:09

24 Jan 2017 16:33:30
I don't see the hate.

I see a player who is obviously struggling, and well off the pace.
In fact, he appears to be regressing, and making more and more mistakes each game.

I see a player who has not realized the potential he showed a few years ago, at Bayern.

Maybe he will come good, maybe not. None of us can predict the future. All I know is that right now, he is not at the level we need.

If it is due to lack of fitness, why is he starting?

Yes - Liverpool used to make great players. They also used to be ruthless with players who weren't good enough. Don't forget that part.

24 Jan 2017 17:29:06
Dawn, transfers are an intrinsic part of progress, so yes we do need to buy to improve. That's not to say it's Can that needs replacing but Klopp will buy at least 2 new first 11 players this summer and someone will make room for them. Seeing how Can is one of the players struggling right now then he's in danger, as are a number of first team players.

24 Jan 2017 18:45:27
I don't think any liverpool fan actually hates Emre can. he has his moments. Thought he did ok against man u for instance but I very much doubt he will grow into the footballer we'd like to see. Henderson for instance had a mediocre 1st season, lot of people slated him. But he's our captain and is a massive loss when injured or suspended. Could any liverpool fan say the same for Emre can really? I wouldn't sell him unless he wants to go but I certainly want a better option along side Henderson.

24 Jan 2017 11:35:39
Nice Story, Ex Liverpool youth player Adam Morgan is the current top scorer in this year's FA Cup with 6 goals. After a few years of tumbling down the leagues and suffering from a number of disciplinary problems there are early signs that he's getting his career back on track. Along with 6 FA Cup goals (in just three games) he's scored 10 goals in 11 appearances in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

{Ed001's Note - sorry I don't have time at the moment.}

24 Jan 2017 13:41:55
I'll answer for fun!

I have been impressed by Gibson of Middlesborough, Sam McQueen of Saints and Antonio of West Ham.

All 3 would fill gaps in our squad at centre back, left back and wide forward.

Morning all, ed's been reading a few reports this morning that we are in talks to sign William Carvalho, have you heard anything onthis or is it just bs? Cheers in advance.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - William Carvalho has been looked at by Liverpool so there is the chance that something can be done.}

24 Jan 2017 11:30:38
One for the summer I would imagine

24 Jan 2017 12:40:22
DaRedMan, the rumours are that we are in Portugal now to broker a deal this window. The source isn't great so doubt it myself but would be a good signing if we are interested and can pull it off.

24 Jan 2017 11:10:16
Are we currently working on trying to get a deal done Ed002?

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of anything happening at the moment.}

24 Jan 2017 10:04:56
I know this sounds mad, but what about TAA in the place of Mane i read that he has played this position before.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

24 Jan 2017 11:31:45
He has played on the wing before so it's not out of the question. Can't see him being given the chance there though.

24 Jan 2017 08:36:32
Eds, could it be that Klopp has sent markovic to Hull to get a look at him in the premier league with a view of bringing him back into the fold if he is decent?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - No - Liverpool has ruined his career up to now and are continuing to pay through the nose for a player Klopp doesn't want.}

24 Jan 2017 12:01:50
thanks Eds002

24 Jan 2017 08:22:22
Reports saying Couthino is in contract talks with the club.
Ed002, do you think there I'll be a release clause inserted if he signs a new deal with Liverpool

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - To what end? Why? Who would it apply to.}

24 Jan 2017 01:12:56
Disclaimer: I may be reading too much into this.

Was just wondering, with the reports out that Klopp says he's frustrated with the window (apparently because we are struggling to get our targets at a reasonable price), this is in direct contrast to what we've heard from the eds about not expecting any pieces coming in this window.

Has anything changed since then? Can't see a reason why Klopp would not be telling the truth here (unless he's trying to light a fire under a few of our players) .

Ed. anything imminent or in the works (with incomings) for this window?

Thanks!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea which Ed told you not to expect anyone arriving in this window.}

24 Jan 2017 12:07:01
Klopp also said that the clubs don't want to sell in January.

24 Jan 2017 14:28:48
If I remember correctly, I think it was Ed 01 who said it.

{Ed001's Note - I didn't say we were not going to try mate, just that I didn't expect us to be able to bring anyone in. January is always a difficult window, unless one transfer kicks off a big merry go round.}

24 Jan 2017 17:51:56
Ok cheers. Thanks for clearing that up.

24 Jan 2017 21:27:18
I seem to remember how difficult it was to get Alex Texeira in from Chahktar last Jan. We went all in for him but they were asking for stupid money hence we pulled out. This explains why Klopp hates the Jan Window. Unless you are willing to break the bank (something we should not be doing), you won`t get players you actually need.

24 Jan 2017 00:23:28
Stevie is onto a winner here,

Jurgan has stated that he would like to be here around 7 years like BD and FCM. That gives Stevie 4 years to work his way up the ranks up until assistant manager in JK's last year. Exactly like zidane at Madrid. He can also do punditry on the side but learn management from the bottom up. He could be the manager of MK Dons right now but has chosen to work with the academy. What does that say about his passion for the club. Having him around can only be a good thing and I also think if he implements his ideas within the youth set up of the club, we will have a great future manager of LFC with a lot of home grown talent in the squad.

Believable6 Unbelievable3

{Ed007's Note - I've just been a wee bit sick in my mouth reading that. Have you ever considered a career writing soap opera storylines or chick flicks?}

24 Jan 2017 07:42:31
No thank you. Leave him in the academy to inspire the kids. He is too careless to be manager. He'd be done for tapping up on a monthly basis!

When Klopp steps down I really hope we use our head and not our heart by appointing Pepjin Linders as head coach/ manager.

24 Jan 2017 07:50:09
Josh shall we just wait and see if he turns out to be a decent coach first, let alone assistant manager. As Klopp said himself, whatever Gerrard does after football he's starting from zero. He's not coached or managed before and we've no idea how good (or bad) he'll be. Only time will tell!

24 Jan 2017 07:56:35
Klopp has his own assistants and he is not going to have the circus that comes with Gerrard anywhere near the first team.

24 Jan 2017 09:59:19
Saying he'll be bad is no better than saying he'll be good. let's just leave him be and wait and see how it turns out.

24 Jan 2017 10:10:07
what exactly did I just read, come on man you can't be serious? Besides the fact, Klopp hasn't been here long and your already talking about when he's off, wow.

24 Jan 2017 10:52:28
Why would Jurgen Klopp dump the excellent assistants that he's worked with and trusted for years, for Gerrard?
And God forbid, when Klopp does eventually move on. and I hope it won't be for many years yet, I hope Liverpool FC sets its sights much higher than Gerrard when looking to appoint a new manager!

24 Jan 2017 10:39:28
I'm fairly happy with the assistant manager we have now! And think we need a more experienced manager than a first timer when Klopp leaves, club legend means nothing as a manager

Good point Danray. This romanticism and sentimentality must be done away with.
Gerrard may or may not make good coach. We don't know. Let's let him go prove himself and stop this fantasy.

We'll soon be sounding like Man U fans (Giggs) .
Good luck to Stevie and hopes he makes a decent career for himself, be it eventually at LFC or elsewhere.

For now, we have a manager in place, and a class one at that. Let's focus on that and supporting him and his technical team.

I'm fairly happy with the assistant manager we have now! And think we need a more experienced manager than a first timer when Klopp leaves, club legend means nothing as a manager

{Ed007's Note - I've just been a wee bit sick in my mouth reading that. Have you ever considered a career writing soap opera storylines or chick flicks?}

What I would like to know fellow reds is who you think looked elegant when running with the ball. For me it was Smicer.

Jari Litmanen, he glided around the pitch with the ball glued to his toes.

If only this was something no-one cared about because it's pointless!

Patrick Berger, usually ended runs with a cracking shot too.

Romeo cencini in the over 75s five a side competition on father ted. What a guy. He missed the penalty tho. Some eyebrows on him.
