Chill out guys,

Scored 4
Got 3 points
We WON

It's the business end of the season, points matter more than performance .

Roll on the next game .!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Exactly, every game is now a cup final.

Does anyone really think that BR was happy we shipped 3 goals? Of course he wasn't but he's also clever enough to not belittle his players in public.

You can be sure he will be working on it.

At the end of the day the bigger picture is that the team didn't give up and kept pressing for a winner.

That cannot be understated.

Oh yeah and it looks like the football world is waking up to the fact that Daniel Sturridge is a world class player.

Agree0 Disagree0

MARK E SMITH, yes BR is probably
Not happy with conceding 3 goals but
What we as fans would like to know
Is what is he doing about it, this has been going on since last season and
Nothing seems to be changing.

In light of yet another horrific defensive display today, it is imperative that Jamie Carragher be brought back in immediately as defensive coach.

None of the members of the existing coaching staff have the necessary qualifications for this role.

Brendan Rodgers himself has done an incredible job on creating superb attacking football for this team, but he needs urgent help on his defence. Martin Skrtel needs to be taken out of the firing line for the game at Southampton because his rashness in decision making is causing a sense of panic to come over the entire defence.

When Carragher came back into the team during last season instead of Skrtel the goals against for the rest of that season decreased dramatically.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The irony of your statement is that you're unqualified to make such claims; with all due respect you're talking nonsense.

The problem is we don't actually have a back 4 at the moment, in the sense of 3 out of our 4 'first teamers' really should be replaced if we're to succeed in our desired style of play. The only defender I believe capable of playing at the level we want to achieve, the way we play, is Sakho. Unfortunately because Sakho is there it renders Daniel Agger irrelevant I feel as I don't think he can play in a right sided position comfortably. Skrtel is, and always has been, a liability. He's not comfortable playing high pressure football, he doesn't have the pace or decision making required. Johnson is just lazy, overpaid & generally that good this season (I used to be a huge fan FYI). Enrique has about the same ability to 'see the bigger picture' as child. He really does just do things on a whim, great when they work, catastrophic when not.

In conclusion I don't believe the coaching staff are at fault entirely. The way we play is working as we're picking up points. There was nothing wrong with the performance on a whole today, however individual errors led to us conceding 3 goals. one could argue that by coaching us to play in a way that causes the opportunities for this mistakes to arise are partly to blame, however with the attack we possess I think this is a worthy sacrifice. (As far as I could tell from MoTD we are the first team to keep more possession than swansea in the league this year?)

Agree0 Disagree0

You can't have it both ways. If you want to see the fantastic attacking football that's being produced at the moment, then the payback for that is defensive frailty. We throw players forward to overwhelm the opposition and create opportunities. This leaves a big hole where the holding midfielders would be normally, exposing the defence. The current setup with Stevie G and Hendo is always going to leave the team at risk defensively, as Stevie struggles positionally at times and Hendo can't track a runner to save himself, but they make up for it in what they add on attack. We have the least protected defence in the prem because of the way we attack, but I would take 4-3 over 1-0 any day. Hard on the nerves but great entertainment!

Agree0 Disagree0

So brendan should sell enrique johnson agger and skrtel?seriously

Agree0 Disagree0

That would be the best way to move forward

It's strange but it's clear to see Suarez operates down the left and never really in the middle
And I guess that's why Suarez hasn't scored for ages
It would be a problem if we wernt scoring but seeing as we are it's not such a problem at the moment

Special mention for Jonjo Shelvey today, Swanseas best player first half, scored a great goal then almost apologised for scoring it. Showed how much he thinks of us.

Great result today. Just a thought, if we make top 4 and qualify for champs league, will BR change our style of play next season to maintain our league status (keep top 4) as well as progress in Champs league? More defensive ala Rafa or will we be the same. I know its hypothetical but maintaining a healthy league position and not being dumped out of the CL early is going to be tough (next season). #DareToDream

Summer deals could end up.

Out
Jones (free) & Reina 5 million = Valdes free.

Out
Johnson 6-8 million & Wisdom 4-5 million = Montoya free

Out
Skrtle 10-12 million, Coates 5-6 million, Robinson 2-3 million & Enrique 5-6 million = Moreno 20-25 million.

Out
Assiadi 5-7 million & Allen 10 million = Rakitic 15-20 million.

Out
Aspas 5-8 million, N'goo 2-3 million, Borini 8-10 million =
Munian 10 million & Konoplyanka 10 million.

With our upcoming youngsters I'd prefer them loaned to lower tier premier clubs like below.

Ilori. QPR (if promoted).
Alberto. Norwich.
Suso. Hull.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - So 15 out and 6 in this summer?}

Gotta love abit of fantasy straight from someone's football manager season!

To be fair to the guy Robinson, Wisdom, Coates, Assaidi, Ngoo, Borini, Reina haven't played for us this season so can they really be counted as first team players than needs replacing?

{Ed002's Note - You are right, simply wasters sent out on loan before having their contracts cancelled in the summer.}

Hello All Eds and fellow REDS

It's bemusing to see so many 'fans' moaning about our back four, defensive coaches and formations.
Lads, look at the way we are playing! Look how many Liverpool players suddenly pop up in the opposition penalty area. Look how deadly we look attacking, we look like we can score every time we attack.
Now, think back to when was the last season Liverpool attacked with such deadliness, such pace and in such numbers. We are a joy to watch! The whole country (barring the obvious 2) are ringing our attacking praises, our movements and how exciting a team Liverpool have become. Take a moment to weigh things up.

Stevie G is beginning to familiarize to his new role. However good he is, it takes time to really get the grips to a new position in a league as frantic as ours. Lucas, when fit, will solve that problem. Sakho and one other will solve the defensive hitches and Mignolet will become better with every game. He is only 23, so is Sakho.
We have a fantastic team who are on the verge of something extremely exciting. When some fans begin to make comments not befitting a Liverpool fan I'm not surprised at the replies they get from the Eds.
Come on friends, everyone's waiting for us to slip and slip WE WILL NOT because we will support and shout and sing our hearts out. The team looks like a TEAM, a team with fantastic team spirit and a great unity that was absent in recent years. take a look fellow Reds and appreciate and ENJOY our team. funnily enough we still are a work-in-progress, don't forget.
Well done to the whole team, BR and his team and people.
Let's take on game at at time, used to be 12 games, now it's 11. YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said brother in red, I'm reading some of the comments and can't believe what I'm reading really! What a super season for us, most goals scored in the league and four points that's four points off the top! I can't remember when I was so excited about a group of players as this lot, congrats and thanks to everyone involved is due never mind this rubbish of putting them down, Liverpool have no place for plastics!

Out of the four up coming players Suso, Alberto, Ilori and Teixera who do you think will be loaned next season and who will be a squad player/comes on as sub?

For me I'd loan Ilori and Alberto but next season would prefer it to be to premiership clubs I.e. Hull, Palace, Norwich to ensure they get gametime in this league.

I think we will keep Teixera so he can continue to develop under the clubs watchful eye. With Suso I think he will make more of an impact than Alberto next season.

Alberto needs a loan to build his confidence and ensure gametime. Would have liked him to have been loaned in January so he could of get some games under his belt.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I understand that two want out because they have not had adequate opportunity, one will seek talks over commitments in the summer and one is a kid who might get a chance going forward. But you can't have it both ways; give the youngsters a chance or bring in experience. The loan model works well - the club has not used it well enough.}

Eds I'm guessing you mean Ilori and Suso for me both have looked good since being loaned.

I don't the club would loan Teixera due to his injury problems and would rather bring him through at Liverpool.

My ideal scenario would be they all stay but to ensure they get some vital playing time under their belt in this league I would try and ensure deals with clubs such as Hull, Norwich and QPR (if promoted).

For example
Ilori loaned to QPR if promoted.
Alberto loaned to Norwich.
Suso loaned to Hull.

This is all dependant on departures and signings obviously but we could still do this to help them develop further.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It doesn't work like that. It is really not just that simple.}

Hi gang, if any of the EDD'S are available please could you
Tell me WHO are the defensive coaches at anfield because
After that game today and also through the season the
Defending has been shocking, it's OK the JOLLY RODGER
Sitting there in his interviews waxing lyrically about how
Great are forwards are but when is he going to sort the
Defence out, personally I don't think he will, this is as good as it gets, god help us when we get in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - So you can trash even more people you have zero knowledge of. It is embarrassing to sit and read post after post demanding the coaching staff, the manager and most of the players are kicked out. Liverpool has played really well for a year and have screwed up here and there but gotten lucky a few times. But the club seemingly has the most unsupportive fans anywhere that I know of. How many did Liverpool lose by today?}

I don't see that Rodgers slagging the defenders off would be productive, at the end of the day we always had one more gear when it counted, rather than focus on what went wrong, look at what went right. Hendo, Sturridge, Suarez, Allen all had good games, Henderson particularly, he reminds me of the great Ronnie Whelan he's getting that good.
4-3 is not good for the nerves, but sn*g me, I got my money's worth today.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't care if the match had ended 10-9 so long as it is us that finished in front.
The only thing really bad today was the pen we gave away for the 3rd.
That is a mistake that many on here highlighted early in the season. Luckily today it did not cost us any points. On another day it could have.
Our style of play is a joy to watch and I would rather be entertained with BR style of play than the negative defensive displays we have had to endure in the past. Nicking a 1 goal lead then trying to defend it till the final whistle.
You don't mind so much losing or drawing a game when you have been thrilled like LFC have this season.
And many a game we have won/drawn this term we would have drawn/lost in the past.
I really do see we have improved so much and I am sure BR is as concerned as much as the fans to some of the sloppy goals we concede and will be working hard in the future to cut these mistakes out.
A good performance yesterday capped with 3 points. What more can a fan ask for!

Great point by Mark E Smith there:

"I got my moneys worth today"

Isnt that what it is about at the end of the day? We want to be entertained and be proud to watch our team.

I would much rather watch Liverpool win 4-3 than Chelsea win 1-0 as they did against Everton.

Do you boys think Suarez can win PFA Player of the year?

He certainly deserves to be nominated but do you think his past histrionics will come back and haunt him?
(Personally I think he should be judged on what he is doing this season, but as they say, its a funny old game).

Whilst I'm on the subject, who are your top 3 nominations?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Suarez, Sturridge, Hazard in that order for me Dags. No 1 else even close to their level at the moment.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi dags i'd go with aguerro saurez sturridge ramsey hazard any 1 of them 5 would be worthy winners even with the injuries to ramsey and kun buy I think on paper saurez has been immense this year and if he finishes the season strong he should be favourite but if chelsea win the title can see hazard winning it with saurez been judged on his previous

Agree0 Disagree0

No dg I think he has done a lot to reform himself in the eyes of others, let's hope it lasts.

My 3.

Suarez - top scorer, top no. of assists - speaks for itself.
Hazard
Toure

An honourable mention for Koscielny, one of the top defenders this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez

Hazard

Aguero

In that order. really like Chelsea's ramires but he will never get it he's so underrated

Agree0 Disagree0

If Suarez can avoid trying to eat anyone between now and the voting then he should definitely win it. He's been consitently the best player in the league over the past twelve months.

I'd have:
1. Suarez
2. Kompany
3. Aguero

Agree0 Disagree0

Ask any Everton fans about Ramires' antics yesterday.
He should wear flippers instead of boots.

Agree0 Disagree0

I must admit you guys have all mentioned the ones I was thinking of.

1) Ya Ya Toure

2) Suarez

3) Hazard.

Agree with Richards, an honourable mention for Koscielny this year who, along with Mertesacker, has been brilliant for us (dont mention Anfield, lol)

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers for the nominations lads.

Agree0 Disagree0

Aguero and Ramsey have been in and out due to injuries, so I don't think I'll go for them, but they were class whilst they played. My personal choice would be Suarez, Hazard and Negredo.

Agree0 Disagree0

LOL Ken.

People need to calm down a little. Up until today we have played a chunk of the season without a high quality back five. Johnson, Agger, Sakho (who I think was ultimately bought to replace Skrtel) and Enrique in defence and the ever under appreciated Lucas Leiva. We are four points off the top WITHOUT these players and they are still to come back. Added to this is the emergence of another local lad come good in John Flanagan who seems to be fast tracking his career all of a sudden. Then there is the ever improving Sterling, perhaps the most consistent performer this year in Henderson and a striker in Sturridge who looks as prolific as a certain blonde number nine( who doesn't seem to score as many in blue as he did red) did several years ago. At this rate its not inconceivable that we may have six players in the World Cup squad .Johnson, Henderson, Gerrard,, Sturridge are, for me close to certs. with Sterling and Flanagan as possibilities.
I understand the frustration of the problems at the back and often scream to clear the ball when we seem to be over playing it but that's part of the process. We have a manager who has been brave enough to implement a style of play throughout the team. It has its risks, especially before he has fully assembled HIS squad to play like that. That said we haven't looked anywhere near as exciting going forward as we do now for 20 years. Add to this the obvious development of players already there and a growing belief in the squad we have a chance of the title. Its almost the end of February, were 4 points off the top and we've scored 70 goals. Weve got the big boys to come to Anfield and a trip down the East Lancs to come. The futures bright and the now is so exciting. Enjoy it people

We did make hard work of it today but still some great play in patches. Henderson very good today and 2goals a big big bonus.Sturridge, lethal simple as that. Suarez trying so hard and so unselfish many times today, think he has really matured this season. Superb ball by Sterling for 1st goal, bending into Zsturridges run. Nice to hear Sturrigde getting song sung to the tune of Patrick Berger song, he deserves it.
Flanagan struggling a bit, getting a bit too tight to pacey wingers and getting done but can't fault his effort at all. Mingolet really ends to start coming off his line to collect balls on the floor, a few times today rooted on his line. Thought Bony was too strong for our centre halves today, he done well.Couldn't understand Rodgers subs today, firstly taking Sterling off for Allen, not Allen coming on but thought if anyone Coutinho should have went off, quiet in the first half and no better 2nd half, then taking Sturridge off when chasing a goal, worked in the end as we got result but I think it could have went badly wrong.
All swell, so onwards and upwards boys, well done.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Feb 2014 20:22:21
Hi fellow reds
Am I the only one who thinks that Sturridge could have played Suarez in for a tap in on a few occasions (especially after scoring 2 and going for his hat trick) whereas Suarez has laid on for him to score easy goals. He did it again today and it could have cost us 2 points, after all it is supposed to be a team game and if he could get that part out of his game he would be a much better player

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Feb 2014 21:13:26
I missed the match, so I can't comment on today's game specifically, and he did set up Hendo today, but generally I have a little nag in the back of my mind about Sturridge's team play. It's dreadful at times. And yeah, all good strikers are selfish, but Rush, Fowler and Torres (we hate him, but let's not forget just how good he was) scored hatfuls at their peaks and did more in terms of teamplay than Sturridge does imo.

Sturridge is better in the build up than someone like Owen or Baros, though, and he has scored nearly at a rate of a goal a game for his LFC career so far. Something which the others I mentioned didn't quite do. And given that it's been broken up by spells playing with little niggles and spells on the sidelines, I don't think it's a purple-patch either. This is quite possibly his level.

So it's trade I'd make for his goal-record for the moment, but he could stand to work on it.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - So you missed the match but know that Sturro set up Hendo in front of Brendo?}

23 Feb 2014 22:17:39
Ed02 there is something called "highlights" that you can watch online

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - They are hoping to introduce it for the 2017/2018 season. Hang in there.}

The moaning about Sturridge is ridiculous. He scored 2 goals with only 4 shots nevermind neatly setting up Suarez who took an extra unnecessary touch and fluffed it (and Suarez took 7 shots, 2 on target, got 0).

If the situation had been reversed and BR had pulled off Suarez who was on a hat trick and left on Sturrudge who had 7 shots and only 2 on target with no goals, people would be howling. Instead, the guy who was one of our best players on the day is getting stick for no particular reason and after being completely integral to our actually winning.

Good win today but yet again very poor defending. If we had a half decent defence all season I would go as far to say we would be top now . That`s obvious I know but it`s true . We have 11 games left if we can win 6 of those games we will be in the champions league next season . Looking at our run in I see no reason why we can`t do that . Being greedy I think we could do even better maybe third or second if we win our games at home against chelsea and man city. If we play like we have been doing at home we could do it . But the defence needs to do a lot better if we are to do it . Dare to dream .

I thought Johnson's form was encouraging today, it's the first time I've felt we had a good balance of full backs, I've been very critical of him recently, but I would guess his 'injuries' hampered his ability more than we (I)thought.
I still don't think he's the long term option, but at his very best level he is an asset, so his return could be helpful.
I'm also glad BR didn't stick Flanno out on the left, he's earned that position for the time being, so kudos to Rodgers. It may be a little harsh on Cissokho who's played fairly well recently, but there's no doubt at both peaks, Johnson is probably the better option.

We very much need Sakho and Lucas back.
I have no idea where we fit them in or who we take out for them, but the outcome has to be better than the comical defending we saw today.

Great show from Henderson and Sturridge. Both shoe ins for the World Cup, whilst last year they probably wouldn't have. Massive well done to both the lads for that.

I don't care that Suarez isn't scoring ATM, he isn't sulking, and you can see just how much he wants it.
I don't think he wants the hassle this summer, if we finish 1st or 2nd, he'd stay without a doubt. Champions league is the minimum if we want to keep him.
If we can keep up results, and get wins against United away and Spurs at home, I think the top 4 race will be pretty much over.

Arsenals horrible fixture list starts now, and City have a huge fixture pile up, although perhaps they alone have the squad to successfully deal with that.
It's all still to play for yet, all I want, is 3 points v Soton!

Evening Gents,

Dont you boys ever have a boring game? lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Evening Dags,
At this stage I'd gladly take 11 more boring 1-0's lol, my heart surely won't hold out much longer ha ha. Still great 3 pts in dif circumstances for both teams. We need to take advantage of City playing cup final at the weekend though to keep the pressure on them. We're away to Southampton and ye got Stoke away so 2 toughies. Chelsea are away to an unpredictable Fulham but they'll be confident of the win. We have 2 weeks off after that unless they re-arrange the Sunderland game. So hopefully have Sakho, Lucas back then for the final stretch.

Great result, but how many games can we expect to win if we concede three goals. Don't get me wrong, I love this brand of football, but today we scored four goals and I was nervous up to the final whistle.

Its far too easy to blame individuals or CB partnerships. IMO, the reason we are conceding so many goals is the system we are playing. Brendan persists with four attacking players (and hey, I love watching them pouring forward) but the reality is we only need three of Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge & Sterling especially against teams like Swansea who can hold onto the ball for long periods and attack with purpose. Brendan made the change today bringing on Allen for Sterling backing up my argument. I'm big, big fan of Brendan's, but now we're at the business end of the season I'd much rather win 2 or 3 nil than having to score more than we concede every game.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Feb 2014 19:50:39
To a degree yeah, playing this style of football will always result in more chances for the opposition, but it's up to our defensive players to snuff that out.
Besides, our comical defending have simply been errors that you can't coach out, or warn people about beforehand

Big 3 points.

Norwich did us a favour and the Bitters lost ground.

We need the cavalry to come over the hill. Leiva and Sakho will be big players for us in the final 6 games or so.

Allen is now showing his legion of doubters that he does have something to offer. When will some of our so called supporters learn? First Lucas then Henderson now Allen.we have some bloody good players who should be supported until they show that they are not up to the job.

Spurs are looking like they will cave in.

We can still peek over our shoulder to make sure they don't sneak up again but to hell with it let's just belt on and give it a go. Keegan could not do it at Newcastle but we migth just do it with our lot. let's get Arsenal in our sights first and then see if we can bring down the big two Citeh and Chelski. no fear just go for it and see where we get to.

Any chance Carra would come out of retirement to play in the last few games. Can you imagine if he was in the studio and told Gary Neville that he was having to leave him to do the analysis himself as he was off to get changed and play. maybe the game at OT would be the one to do that!

Fair play to Ken and the lucky pants, I myself am in difficulty. I have been wearing a LFC shirt to the Gym for a while. It was nicely washed etc after the Man City game and then we went on this unbeaten league run. I missed washing it just a few times and then released it may be linked to our top four push. It is absolutely minging now as I can't bring myself to wash it or stop wearing it. I swear it will not be washed and still worn until May if it helps. I may well be arrested for environmental pollution by then but I will take it for the team! All joking aside this current style of play is seriously entertaining if scary, we don't seem to do boring. let's just hope if we need to, we continue this all season I will take 3 points per game however they come now. I was lucky enough to support the reds through the 70's and onward, and so want this generation of fans to see us where we belong, right back on our perch!

In many ways, being slack at the back is not a good thing.

Yet, for selfish reasons, being direct and efficient up-front out-weighs the issues at the back.

Maybe we should compare our team to say Elton John, who as his age would be grateful the front bit is still working yet the back is still a little vulnerable.

Swings 'n' roundabouts etc etc.

That's the way I see today's performance anyway.

If we restrict the penetrative attacks to the back things will tighten up eventually.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We are not settled at the back due to constant changes to the back four due to long term injuries. That`s the REAL problem we have right now.

There were mistakes today and we got punished, but we have time to work on it for the next match.

Let's take the positives out of the game:

1)We scored 4 goals.
2)Henderson was imperious again.
3)Allen played well, was impressed by his contribution and the balance he added. And I'm the first to admit that I've been very critical of him, I love being proved wrong!
4)We picked up points while our direct rivals for fourth didn't.

Hi Eds,
good that Daniel is scoring as Luis is having a hard time to find the back of the net. But we have to play better defence as we`re not going to score 4 or 5 goals every game. We had some bad luck today but defence is looking poor this season. Hope we`ll clinch top four finish and add 2-3 quality defenders in the summer. All the best.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't think it's players. Put the same team in benitez's hands and they would be one if the best defences in the league I think but we would have scored half the goals.

What a great result (if not performance) that has proved to be today. Spuds losing means we can concentrate on looking at the teams above us rather than over our shoulder. Next match against Southampton is going to be a tough one but with 6 points separating us from 5th a slip-up there wouldn't be as costly to our 4th place prospects.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We drew a game like this against Villa and West brom so great improvement on those outcomes. Our defence is unsettled and has been all season. Migs is still battling w/ self-confidence issues. These are contributing to our problems. Ant to add to that, Skrtl is a perennial liability and I`m fed up w/ him right now.

Phew that was another close one but let's remember Chelsea and City won by not playing well also.
Our defending was shambolic at times to say the least but as with against Fulham we showed Character and had to dig deep to come through these games with maximum points.
Swansea looked tired in the last 15 to 20 minutes but that is what Europa league does to you.
Do we have a defensive coach working at the club?
I know the way we play is pleasing on the eye but need to tighten up defensively as eventually we will not be able to score more than the opposition.
BR is learning all the time as is the team and hopefully will be stronger and learn from the mistakes that are being made passing it around our back 4.
Well done to Henderson and Allen who have had their knockers on this site but are working hard for the team.
Think that Suarez is looking a bit jaded and possibly needs a rest of some sort just to get him up to full energy for the final push as the man is quality.
As I write this Norwich are 1-0 up against Spurs which would be a great result for us.

I know we scraped the win and so all the talk is about the points or the bad defending but is it just me or were we again on the end of some really bad refereeing decisions? Their 2nd was a gimme, how can he give a free kick for an off the ball incident? The pen was soft too but also a lot of bad calls all over the pitch for the entire match. I think it's high time someone from our club spoke out about this because it's an all too familiar story now.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The ref was not the reason. Skrtl is wholely to blame for that. He wins the ball then rakes his studs on Shelvey`s calf. That`s a foul and complete lack of discipline. Then on the free kick, he is busy pulling jerseys instead concentrating on the flight of the ball and is surprised the ball hit him and went in. Then on the penalty, Bony has NO chance of winning the ball because Agger already dealt w/ it. But Dodgy Skrtl had to grab and hold even though there`s no danger and got caught hands down by the ref u`re critisizing. Ref did nothing wrong IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not how I seen it at all mate, I think half the stadium in attendance cheering sarcastically when we eventually got a decision lends itself to what I posted too. The ball was well clear of the incident when Shelvey looked about to fall onto Skrtel and Skrtrl then raised his footy to avoid being squashed. I don't only speak of today's game either, there's a whole load of poor decisions that have gone against us recently and nothing gets said. We could make a massive case against Howard Webb alone never mind the rest!

Shocking shocking shocking defending, that's were the transfer budget needs to be spent, all four were poor today. Again I thiought Coutinho was terrible and is little to no use to us when we are defending.
Thought Henderson was excellent again, his harrying go the opposition gives everyone great opportunities to steal the ball and set of our wonderful attackers.
Thought Joe Allen was awesome when he came on and would love to see him get a run in the side.

Guys is it just me or does anyone else think that Luis has been very poor these last 4-5 weeks, no goals in 7 games and also his work rate seems to have gone.

I know he is desperate to play in the world cup but surely after all the club has not only got a great chance of a top 4 finish but a chance of winning the league itself, so if he saving himself for the world cup rather than put a performance in for the club week in week out and help the club achieve not only there ambitions but his as well as well as paying his wages and has supported him through thick and thin, then maybe at the end of the season we would be better to cash in on him.

Obviously I want him to stay, however I am looking for him to continue his early form which was unbelievable, not too concerned about the lack of goals lately but would like to get back to his eagerness and willingness to fight for the team

alan50

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I disagree, he has been working his socks off just as much as any player. The goals are not coming but not for a lack of trying, the odd shot against the post (think back to the volley against arsenal and fulham I think), other times the keepers are doing well in denying him. Maybe today he was slightly desperate for a goal but he is still at the heart of our attacks whether that be winning penalties, providing assists or setting up an attack.
Hopefully he is saving his goals for when we need them :)

Agree0 Disagree0

It's just you.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not concerned at all. He plays his heart out every game. And he tops the goalscoring AND assist tables in the prem this season, so he's not doing too bad :p

Try not to be too reactionary.

Agree0 Disagree0

5 games with out a goal not 7 and he has set up how many you clueless plank he is a hero

Agree0 Disagree0

For what it's worth, I kind of agree with you. Suarez was poor today in my opinion and gave the ball away an awful lot in the oppositions half. His work rate was poor today as well and honestly thought Sturridge worked much harder tracking back than Suarez (as can also be seen by Suarez having 0 tackles and 0 interceptions on the day). Hopefully we don't see today's Suarez for the next 11 games otherwise things might get right interesting for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Feb 2014 16:31:05
What a nerve racking match. Glad we got the three points but BR need to sort out the defence immediately or else we could loose the fourth place. Agger and Johnson need to get their form quickly. I think we are paying the price of not buying a defensive midfielder in January.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That is not the problem as such. We don`t defend as a unit that`s why individual errors happen. Also our backline has been unsettled all season hence no continuity and we lack an attitude of "they will not score today". These are our main problems

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Feb 2014 16:30:14
If we play like that against the bigger clubs we will get tanked. Gerrard was caught out far too many times, Sterling faded, Skrtl had a nightmare. Johnson (out of position on the left) had a reasonable game. Obviously not match fit but looked good going forward, but was very hesitant defending and you get the impression he might not be over all his injuries. Henderson played very very well as did Sturridge and Coutinho. Agger didn't impress. Flanagan had another good game but a couple of passes went badly astray. Suarez is Suarez - a force of nature. Mignolet had a fair game and the three Swansea goals (2 and a penalty) were not his fault. Allen looked good when he came on - better than most of his appearances. Toure looked OK. Moses made no impression.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Funny how we all see different games. I thought Johnson was poor, left big gaps and I thought luis looked off the pace a bit, but he allowed an off game once a season. Defence abysmal.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have to strike a balance b/w attack and defence because we will NOT win the league nor improve our current position in the table if we play defence that way, that`s for sure.

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought Coutinho anonymous and Suarez mediocre. Sturridge was great as was Henderson. Allen had a brilliant 30 minutes.

23 Feb 2014 16:21:00
Very relieved with the win after a pretty shambolic performance.

We were rescued by a brilliant first half performance by Sturridge, Henderson's hard work (and goals!) and Allen's introduction, which gave us an extra body in midfield.

In truth, though, we were very luck to get the three points - not for the first time this season.

The centre of our defence is an absolute disaster zone. Hard to think who I'd like to play alongside Sakho once he comes back.

We're not much better at full-back - Flanno did OK (no more today), but GJ was poor again and doesn't deserve to displace Cissokho, who is at least solid defensively.

After two or three absolutely storming games, Gerrard was badly exposed in the middle again today, much as he was against Villa at home. With Henderson more advanced, Coutinho relatively anonymous, and the full-backs being dominated by Swansea's wingers, there was just far too much work for Gerrard to do. When the opposition are pressing us at home, we either need Henderson and Coutinho to both stick closer to Gerrard or we may need Allen to come in.

Add to all that the fact that Suarez looked jaded (though his class still led to two goals) and it might look like we've got a few problems. However, I've thought that at various points throughout the season and we keep on getting the results and pulling out fantastic moments just when we needed them, so maybe I should worry less and keep on enjoying the roller-coaster!

Ultimately, great character shown by the lads, just like against Fulham - and another vital three points!

YNWA

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Feb 2014 16:02:39
As soon as Lucas returns from injury I think he HAS to return to the side, because his intelligence and positioning should help to improve (at least to some extent) our disjointed and frequently shambolic defending.

However, having said that, I fear it might be difficult to introduce him back into his usual CDM role. To do so would undoubtedly involve either forcing Gerrard to vacate the position (which would be a strange choice considering how recently excellent he's been in there) or switching back to a set up with two CDMs (which would mean one of Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho or Henderson would have to be dropped).

I was wondering, therefore, whether anybody thinks Lucas could be successfully converted into a centre back. Surely he has all the attributes (mentally, physically and technically) to play the position at least as well as some of the others have this season? Mascherano has made the switch pretty successfully, after all!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

This is like the idea of putting agger as cdm. I really don't think it can work mate. just my opinion though. mascherano isn't really doing it as a cb too imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

I believe when lucas is back he needs to play where gerrard is. gerrards been fantastic, but lucas has better posistion to stop danger earlier. he is also so calm on the ball. he gives away silly freekicks. albeit in good posistions sometimes, as a centre back he would give away too many penalties in my opinion. When sakho is back he should play with agger. skrtles shirt pulling will now be exploited and toure is scaring the life out of me.

for me now when fully fit the team has to be.

flanno sakho agger cissokho

Anyone who ctiticises Lucas should have a look at our goals conceded in games where he does not play. When he is missing the back four are exposed far too much. BR keeps bigging up Gerrard for the holding midfield role, but he hasn't got the legs or positional sense to plug all the gaps. I don't care how many 40 - 50 yard balls he pings out to the wings, shielding the back 4 is the priority.

It is ridiculous that we have to score 4 at home to guarantee winning the game. I'm not sure why Agger went off but it appears that he either gets injured or can't be risked for the full 90. This affects the stability of the back 4, which shouldn't be rotated in order to give them a chance to gel into a unit. Therefore, if a half-decent offer comes in for him in the summer it should be taken. Sakho must be given the chance to nail down one of the spots and the others (maybe even a new recruit) should battle it out to partner him.

Hoepfully Spurs will slip up to give us some breathing space. If we can get to the stage where we have virtually guaranteed a Champions League place we will be able to relax and mount a charge for the title. If Spurs continue to cling to our coat tails, I think we will nervously stumble through games.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with you about Gerrard - even from the deep positions he can be an offensive threat. His defensive positioning, however, was woeful today, he was dragged out of position time and time again and just seems to lack the discipline. Have to say our fullbacks didn't help, they were so advanced in the first half it was just ridiculous - Gerrard was forced to cover on the wings and as a result massive gaping holes were left in the midfield.

We have the best attack in the league, but by jove somebody better sort out that defence on the training ground, because it will cause us points if we go on like that. Suarez had 7 shots today. Hope he doesn't slowly slip back into his sloppy finishing again. His conversion rate has been excellent this season but the last 4 games his shooting has been very poor. Skrtel is really pushing his luck. At fault for there 2nd and 3rd goals and lucky to still be on the pitch. Johnson was pretty average tbh. He should have done more for their first goal. Dyer had too much time to pick his pass.

At the end of the day though, its a good 3 points and Sturridge and Hendo were the stars of the show. I just hope Lucas and Sakho hurry back because defensively we're an absolute shambles.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez was very poor today, even aside from the shooting. I lost track of how many times he gave the ball away or passed to no one in particular. If he keeps up this form, we won't have to worry about anyone breaking the bank to buy him.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would prefer him to have a slight dip in form (if you can call it that) when sturridge is in form, than when if/when sturridge is struggling or injured. Suarez providing assists to sturridge is fine with me!

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez was noticeably fatigued near the end of the game and was poor but before that he was full of running, a constant threat and had a hand in 2 goals - very harsh all this talk of him being in bad form. He is still playing well, its just that purple patch has subsided some what - on top of that the extra attention he gets from defenders just leaves more space for Sterling, Sturridge, et al. Have to say I think Coutinho's form has been very iffy - he was ineffective today and really bad when we didn't have the ball. I'm not suggesting the lad needs to play as a defensive midfielder but he at least needs to learn how to tackle, didn't see him win the ball once today.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agger should not be anywhere near the first team. I can't believe people still think he's a good defender. I don't know what our best combination is but I do know Agger should not be part of it

Agree0 Disagree0

Skrtel is an infinitely worse defender than Agger and undoubtedly the biggest threat to ourselves - he needs dropping immediately because he is a mistake waiting to happen. We cannot play the passing game out of defence with Toure and Skrtel either so I think Agger and Toure has to be the way to go for now. hope Sakho gets back soon, we are missing him.

Grinding out results is what we have to do - far from our best today but managed to get the points, that is hat it is all about. Plenty of players could be criticised and I really am not convinced that Johnson should be in the team - awful defensively, would much prefer Cissokho.

p.s. honourable mention to Joe Allen - he played well and balanced the midfield well. He needs to be more physical though, players walk past him at times and that is not acceptable. Henderson MOTM? I think so, how about everyone else?

We've been saying all year that Skrtel's shirt holding would come back to haunt us. Is he insane or something? They talk about it every week on international tv and yet he continues to do it. Hope he hasn't cost us three points

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You might be right but I guarantee at any other ground (Chelsea's, United's, Cities, etc) that decision would have never been given against the home team. If you gave penalties for them there would be 4 penalties a game - I don't mind if ref's started to clamp down on it but it seems weird that they just pick and choose when to penalise it - that inconsistency is unacceptable.

MIA:

4 defenders and Luis Suarez's finishing boots.

Much work to do with the defence.
Still think we'll get the 3 points

Been a fan of Henderson this season and it was a great finish for his goal but I feel he has really exposed us defensively today. His legs and pressing seems to be missing today and he's not helping Gerrard in the defensive midfield position which has been giving Shelvey and swansea way too much space between our midfield and defence. Furthermore we've been defending way too deep as bony does not possess much of a threat with his pace. Hope BR gives them a bit of a wake up.

Strange to say maybe, but Swansea better team first half! Against Everton & Arsenal we were closing down immediately. with 2/3 players.
We have given every Swansea player so much space (TONS of space!) they were always going to score.
Poor passing, Coutinho needs to take his blindfold off and defensively we are very very poor.
Anyhoo, I'm hopeful that our quality finishing, yet again, will save the day otherwise another half like that and its going down the pan.
Come on the boys.

Henderson's passing game is off today but I think he has one of the best first touches in the prem.

ruthless attack, shakey defence, no existent midfield. Johnson and Flanno are playing to high up that Gerrard is having to cover them and thus leaving huge gaps in the middle of the park. We are 3-2 up but if we maintain our shape like this we are going to concede more. Coutinho needs to up his work rate and contribution, he cannot just make an impact hen we have the ball and then do nothing when we are defending, he needs to be more involved in all aspects of the game - we are allegedly set up with a 3 man midfield yet they've barely made their presence felt defensively in midfield, we must improve. Our razor sharp attack is glossing over what has been a poor performance thus far.

I hope GJ has benefited from his time out, and comes back refreshed with a point to prove.

I want to see him more positive and confident in the final third and strong in his defending.

His time to shine is now.

Hey eds, what do you think lies ahead for the following players?
- Iago Aspas
- Andre Wisdom
- Jack Robinson
- Seb Coates
- Martin Kelly
- Conor Coady
- Ryan Mclaughlin
- Brad Jones
- Fabio Borini
Some I would want to keep (Mclaughlin, Wisdom and a couple of others) whereas others I would definitely rather we got rid of (Jones, Aspas and LOTS of others!). Thanks in advance eds!

Shelvy, de Guzman, Routledge Dyer and Bony.
They are playing an attacking game. I hope BR has them prepped because with those players, I can see Swansea pressing us very high up the field.
I would ask Hendo to keep close to Gerrard and make sure he's always got an outlet. Even if we sit deep the spaces will open up behind with Sturridges pace.
Can see a very open game here today, we'll either stuff them or it'll be really close!

too many fans are dismissing swansea because of recent home games. they are no pushovers and keep the ball well and seem to have found some form after their manager got sacked

2-2. is my prediction as I think they might expose the gaps on the wings due to sturridge or suarez being forced to drop back

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm going for 4-0 as I have one of those feelings. The last time I had a good feeling like this we smashed Arsenal 5-1.

I just hope Ken is wearing his lucky pants then we're all good :-)

I cannot see Tottenham dropping points today away to Norwich either.
This is a must win game!
Hopefully they will have used all there energy up against Napoli on Thursday.
Come on you red men. Get at them early.
Lets hope for a convincing home win.
I must say I am getting nervous.
Lets hope SAS have there shooting boots on.
Solid at the back today.
Home win.

Going for a 5-1 btw

Predictions lads.

I'm going for 4-0. Suarez to end his mini drought with a brace, and I reckon Gerrard and Sturridge will bag one too.

Red Rum

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Very confident that, I think it's going to be much closer with Swansea coming with the " nothing to loose" thoughts.

I hope we do win because can see spuds winning today, also hair the thought of utd getting closer to us and we have a visit to old Trafford coming up.

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope your right mate, really nervous about the game today as its all set up perfect for us to win and pull away for the other clubs chasing fourth. Then its time to climb the table.

Lucky pants are ON and we are at home. That says 3 points and usually a few goals.
I'll go for 3-1. Sterling and 2 from Luis.

Why would be interested in Benzema when up front is one of the few positions we could compete with the Bayern Munichs and Barcelonas of the Champions League.
He, Suarez and Sturridge would expect 90minutes every game meaning we'd set up a team with sterling, Coutinho, Benzema, Suarez and Sturridge and possibly even Konoplyanka.
Well, I'm all for exciting football but that would be ridiculous. If we have £25m buy Shaw or Moreno to give us quality at left back- a position where we really lack it- and another 4th choice centre back (sorry Kolo mate!)
Seems this is just lazy journalism, as per usual, from Metro Sport

Believable0 Unbelievable0

IF FSG are willing to spend 25 million plus on one player, then I hope BR sorts out the left back conundrum rather than blow it on another striker. Lots of top quality left backs who could welll be moving in the summer Moreno, Rodriguez, Coentrao etc.
Plus Benzema is average imo. And his attitude stinks.

At work on overtime with not a lot to do but have found a 2005 copy of Zoo magazine with summer transfer rumours in. Quite a fount read. Apparently Torres was going to Arsenal, Mascherano to Chelsea, Manchester United were losing Ronaldo to Real Madrid for 18 million and we were getting Shaun Wright-Philips, John O'Shea, Owen Hargreaves and Kevin Nolan.

Lots if other quite amusing ones. It's a funny read!

had a quick question eds and hopefully you have an answer. I live in the states and i'm pretty psyched that Liverpool is coming to play during the summer. if anything ill be attending the Liverpool vs manchester city game in NYC. just wanted to know whether you think most of the first team players will be playing during the north america tour, such as suarez, sturridge, gerrard? since they'll be in the world cup, wondering how long of a break they will be given before returning to the team.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It will be case-by-case depending how many games they play and how far their teams get in the tournament.}

23 Feb 2014 03:53:24
eds, any possible interest in Davies of Swansea?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware.}

23 Feb 2014 02:03:41
Salah has played roughly 13 minutes for Chelsea. I fear he will just waste away now. If mata couldn't get a game.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed003's Note - I'm sure they feed the players well enough to avoid that.}

Yes. He looks reasonably comfortable in his new position as bench warmer.
I wonder if he had the decision again if he would still pick the same team with the benefit of hindsight?
