Just wondered what people would think of Lucien Favre as a potential Rodgers replacement in the club decide to swing the axe.

Lost 6 games in a row this season. No real pedigree. No thanks. Get proven pedigree in. Same goes for players. We need a top player magnet.

Well klopp had an awful season last year, not saying he's an awful manager at all but even good managers have rough spells. And the job favre did at his club was brilliant he coaches good football too

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Sep 2015 11:04:48
I think Favre is a very good manager, and did really well with Gladbach and Hertha Berlin, getting them CL footy with limited budget and no real star players. He is a very astute man tactically, though very moody and eccentric apparently. He has quit before when he felt he couldn't turn things around.

Macca has sparked this site into life with his last two posts! Also, it's given reign to some positivity and it has given us all a break from reading the same posts everyday! Everyone is intrigued including myself! Keep up the good work Macca and the eds:)

Hello eds and fellow reds,

Question for any of the Eds: Would the fact that Mcallister took the press conference have anything to do with the potential change in manager or is it just because it's before the league cup?

Thanks in advance

Love Macca's comment about talking to someone who used to work in spain. obviously most people are saying Ancelotti. but the comment leaves a lot for people to read into if you want to. used to work in spain at a big club.

maybe our new DOF Johan Cruyff!! I am sure Ed01 would jump for joy.

also worked in spain could mean a player from Real or Barca, Frank de Boer? or Frank Rijkaard

Probably just means Ancelotti, which if true is not a bad thing.

Having read the posts from today and seen the papers pick up the (rather wooly) story of us talking to Ancelotti. I just can't see it happening at all.

I just don't think we can attract that calibre of manager anymore. I think we will end up with another 'up and coming' manager. Not what we need!

Believable4 Unbelievable6

23 Sep 2015 05:20:46
If Stoke (no disrespect) can attract the most Champions League medal winners, Liverpool should be able to attract a high level manager. It will depend on what we are willing to pay to bring them in and what the club can offer.

A Guardiola would be out as rebuilding a club is not quite his forte, he has a track record with tweaking successful teams, however there is a lot of money in the EPL compared to other leagues, so we should in theory be able to provide a good pay day.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - bit of a difference attracting bit part players that have little real interest elsewhere, over attracting a top manager with plenty of choice.}

Has anybody else considered that Macca might be alluding to Frank Rijkaard? Managed Barcelona for half a decade and currently unemployed.

Ancelloti has health problems. That's the whole reason he took this year out. I'd love it to be him but especially after Ed002's comments, I just struggle to see it happening.

Good evening Ed001

Having digested all posts & your replys after Maccas posts it clear to understand we have spoken to and see Ancelotti as a firm possibility to replace Rodgers.

My only question is is it likely he would only arrive at end of season as he wanted a year out of the game, meaning Rodgers would probably remain for the full season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I never said it was Ancelotti.}

22 Sep 2015 21:02:27
No you didn't mate to be fair, I'm jumping the gun a little just trying to piece it all together. Also Ed002 is surprised that Ancelotti has met with the club.

I guess we won't know the situation until the season is through.

Thanks again

23 Sep 2015 07:02:25
Tbh I'm not surprised Ancelotti would consider LFC. This job is completely different to what he had at Real and Chelsea. Instead of taking over a world class team, he would be coaching a young team full of potential. This would be a refreshing challenge for him.

If the owners do decide to release Rodgers from his managerial duties, what do people think about letting O'Driscoll take the reins until the end of the season?

Apparently he is a very good man manager and is highly respected by the players. Can't do any worse than Rodgers has done. This can also give the owners enough time to appoint the right manager or even keep O'Driscoll in the job if he impresses.

Just my thoughts as it would be disappointing to see the coaching staff leave so early into their tenure, if another manager brings in his own staff. That's if the owners do ditch Rodgers of course.

Believable3 Unbelievable5

22 Sep 2015 19:22:35
No thanks. I don't think he has worked at any big clubs before and I don't think he has any European experience.

He absolutely could do worse than Rodgers and he won't find it easy to retain top players. If you are going to go through the process of sacking Rodgers then you have to hire someone who is more qualified for the job. S O'D just doesn't fit the demographic IMO.

Agree9 Disagree1

22 Sep 2015 19:24:53
Hell no. if that's the case then we rather keep Rodgers till the end of the season. Your post only shows how far behind we are to the extent the fans are accepting mediocrity. we got a championship manager in Br and now you want someone from league one to take care of the situation. Lol
personally I believe Br should remain if we can't get a proper replacement immediately.

Agree4 Disagree1

22 Sep 2015 19:57:51
Why is it a must that a new manager has to have managed "Big clubs" to be considered for the role. Many top class managers in the game have came from lower league "small clubs" and have been a huge success. I will use our very own Bill Shankly as the prime example who was managing Workington a few years before Liverpool, plus the likes of Ferguson who was at Aberdeen. There's many more. Some people just need the chance to succeed. Most of you would only be happy with Klopp or Ancellotti and would rather Rodgers stay in his post rather than giving someone else a chance?.

Agree1 Disagree3

22 Sep 2015 20:09:10
Aberdeen were far from a lowly club when Fergie left. He won the Scottish double with them and a European trophy (UEFA cup)?
You don't have to have managed at the highest level, but if you have managed at a lower level and not really put yourself in the spotlight then it doesn't bode well.

He may be the best thing since sliced bread, but it's not a risk we should be taking IMO.

22 Sep 2015 20:15:04

We gave that chance to BR 3 years ago.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 20:35:05
I think Aberdeen might be a bit surprised to discover they were on a par with Workington when Ferguson managed them. Leaving that aside, don't forget Fergie was a goal away from being sacked and Shanks took over a club in need of work just to be near the top flight. We've just had the developing managing given time to work, it hasn't. We've spent £300M on a squad that is actually capable of challenging for trophies (barring an issue of CBs lacking the top level). If the club wants to move to a situation where big names will come and stay, where silverware will be regularly picked up, where the stadium expansion makes financial sense, etc then we need someone with the ability to come in and perform at the top level. We don't have the luxury of another guy finding his feet at this level. Plus there aren't a lot of Shanklys and Cloughs hanging around these days.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 20:08:05
We need someone with a proven track record and someone who knows how to win. Someone who is respected in the game. We tried the up and coming with Brendan and look what happened.

I've wanted Carlo for a long time. Brilliant coach, great man manager and would keep and attract top players. Would be the best manager we will of had in years. If we are in talks, then rodgers' days are well and truly over... but are we?

Agree8 Disagree0

23 Sep 2015 00:49:37
One of the key reason we need a top name is to restore belief and attract top talent. We're hard enough to recruit for as it is, but I'm sure signing or keeping top players will be easier with a klopp or ancelloti vs a S o'd. .can't afford any more talent drain

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 16:27:51
So ancellotti has been spoken to apparently! Managed a big Spanish club recently as macca said. Only free agent that fits the bill really. To be honest new face, new lease of life on the team, respected manager, should be able to get some better performances. I hope it happens. And I hope it happens sooner rather than later to allow us the biggest chance of getting it together and mounting a reasonable challenge for Europe

Believable16 Unbelievable1

22 Sep 2015 16:48:21
I think what we need to remember is this is all an hypothetical situation. We still have a manger( A highly incompetent one nonetheless 😢😔) . Ancelotti would be an excellent option if Gordon pulls the axe. Sadly i don't expect it to happen any time soon

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 17:38:11
Not sure Ancelotti is the best option out there for LFC, but one thing is for sure that he will keep our best players like Coutinho out of reach for the likes of Barca and Real. He has the pulling power and would guarantee trophies. What worries me is how he would react during negotiations when FSG tell him the budget available at this point of time is non existent because Clueless Brendan spent it all.

Ancelotti would give an immediate lift to the club, wealth of experience, proven and a really nice bloke.

Agree3 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 19:41:52
The fact we are "in talks" with another manager means that Rodgers time is running out fast, they should've wielded the axe in the summer. I didn't see the point in changing so much of the coaching staff & allowing Brentan to spend all that cash if they plan on sacking him after 10 or so games.

We could've gone the whole hog, get a new man in while only buying 3-4 players that were NEEDED & let the new manager find his feet with the rest of the squad. This is BRs 4th season & it's going to be another one of pain & transition.

Sick of it tbh. Also don't agree with the plan to wear Klopp style glasses to be worn at Anfield. Makes us look silly & petty. I know it's probably considered top banter or whatever. But to me it's not a good idea.

22 Sep 2015 14:57:58
Afternoon Ed01, I would like your opinion on something if possible, a couple of us were dicussing conduct on the pitch with recent events, some were ok with it & others not so! it has obviously always gone on as Ian Wright & others have confirmed but was it to the same extent. Are you happy with winding up the opposition or do you see it as bad sportsmanship or not concentrating on your own game?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is bad sportsmanship and the refs should book a player for doing it, if they catch them, automatically. I believe it comes under the rule of ungentlemanly conduct or whatever it is called these days. Secondly, it can be detrimental or beneficial, depending on so many different factors that is impossible to say which it will be in what match. Whereas concentrating 100% on your own game and working harder on that is always beneficial, so I fail to see the point in winding your opponent up personally. May as well put the effort in to playing the game instead.}

Wreck their heads with your skills and they will make mistakes, slag off their sister and your likely to get butted (zidane)

22 Sep 2015 20:35:46
When I played any sport I always felt it was best to score goals, points, touchdowns etc. I would let my opponents run there mouths. At the end of the game after my team has won there isn't much they can say. I've always felt that way and that is how I'm teaching my boys to behave.

I really wish Zidane would have done that in the world cup as I really dislike the Italians

22 Sep 2015 23:09:43
I agree with most of what's been said but take someone like McEnroe. He ran his mouth and shouted at umpires because he genuinely believes it fired him up and made his opponent lose focus. The facts about the weekend are Gabriel lost focus and Chelsea took 3 points.

Hi ed 001 I was wondering what you thought of lucien favre? who has recently left his post at borrussia Monchengladbach. Another thing could you do a podcast talking about different managers and their tactics like a deep analysis I think that would be really great I like learning about that type of stuff! Or does anyone know any websites that already do that kinda thing I like reading about that kind of stuff. Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Favre is a bit, erm, different. Good idea that for podcasts and articles for FNV as well. I will start work on something now thanks. Favre is one of those happy to see his players just shoot from anywhere, from what I have noticed. This is a decent insight into his methods though: http://theinsidechannel.com/lucien-favres-tactics-at-borussia-monchengladbach/

I would be interested to get the Eds take on how much of a loss Gerrard has been this season.
Watching the games this season I get the impression that SG may have been doing more to galvanise the team (on and off the pitch) than he was being given credit for.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Not too much. He is at the end of his career and his performances last season were not looked upon kindly by the folks here. It was time for a change and for him to move on.}

22 Sep 2015 12:42:40
Ed002, do you think Liverpool have suffered from his lack of leadership? I posted after the Man Utd game that we seem to lack leaders and my view is that, regardless of Gerrard the player, Gerrard the Captain appears to be sorely missed.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - Not to any great extent. I am pretty sure the original plan was that Lallana would have taken over as captain, but with the injuries it allowed Henderson a chance. Milner would certainly have been considered as captain as well. Gerrard is currently causing the club some problems with his book, so they won't be missing him too much.}

22 Sep 2015 13:04:46
Fair point about the book, I would imagine it pretty much means he won't be involved in the club in any capacity under these owners or manager!

I do wish footballers would wait until they have retired completely from the game (including management if that's where their ambition lies) as its just noise and distraction otherwise. Its not as if they don't earn enough on the pitch to have to cash in so much off it!

Thanks for the reply.

Agree2 Disagree2

22 Sep 2015 14:48:23
Why do you wish to gag him? Steven Gerard was a great servant to our club. Things are clearly - CLEARLY - not right at the club. So why shouldn't he say it. He is more qualified than perhaps anyone alive to give insight.

Furthermore, he should've been kept with a view to learning the managerial ropes - in a similar way to what United are doing with Giggs. To me it stinks of lack of vision.

Why do some Liverpool fans have such short memories when it comes to such a loyal servant?!

Steven Gerard was a colossus, a true legend for us. Please lads, let's try and reciprocate the loyalty he gave us.

Agree5 Disagree2

22 Sep 2015 18:12:01
Erm, I'm not in any way denigrating Gerrard!

He has been my Liverpool hero for nigh on 15 years!

My point was that Gerrard bringing out a book where he is basically criticizing the coach, some of the players and the owner unfortunately means he is unlikely to get a coaching role in the current set up. That's a crying shame as I also would've loved Gerrard to take on a Giggs type role - player coach for a couple of years maybe then progressing to assistant manager as Giggs has done.

FSG/BR/Others shoulder a big chunk of the blame for not offering it, but by writing what he has written, Gerrard hasn't helped himself at all.

My final point was about footballers generally. I found much more pleasure in reading Kenny Dalglish reflecting on a full playing and managing career, than reading Torres' 200 page love letter to Liverpool just before he jumped ship.

Although the latest rumours he was putting on there is about Sahin and Clint Dempsey as its not been active for a few years, I imagine he still has some connections at the club who feed him bits of inside info. . just food for thought

The reason we believe macca is because of his track record. When we signed Suarez, he was saying it from 3 weeks before. He also told us about Carroll before any paper. Downing, Adam, Aland also Sturridge, Macca has been on the money. Obviously in football and life, anything can change in a second, but clearly macca has some inside info and that is why we believe him.

Many people thought we had a decent transfer season but I like to think otherwise. Apart from clyne and Ings who both cost a small potion of the budget the rest of the money was wasted on needless talent. Why waste money on Firmino when you have a hell lot of quality talent in the attacking midfield. With coutinho, lallana, texeira and company in the squad that money would have been better placed in convincing inter and kovacic. Why sign a Benteke yet all players with similar have before failed to work in our team. why not get a player who would effortlessly fit in the team. one thing I know, most south American players are mercenaries and trust me Tevez would easily have joined us and did a job for at least two seasons as we sort ourselves out. Don't tell me crap about his behavior because right now Liverpool fc needs to sort its name on the football pitch. Milner was also another con which am starting to think it was a connivance between Milner and Br to undermine our club.
Wow, I had forgotten J.Gomez. the kid is brilliant

Tevezw ho's just took a payout to go back to his boyhood club and was playing in the champions league last season? To generalise an entire continent as being mercenaries is just plain stupid. I could easily say the same about African players or Europeans for that matter.

Tevez would not have came to us, South American players are not 'mercenaries'. I bet you were one of the fans made up when we signed Firmino, but hey I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing - besides I still think he is a very good player and will hopefully come good for us

Apologies for mercenary bit.

Mr Yoxall, trust me apart from knowing he existed. i didn't have a clue about Firmino before we signed him and am not saying he is a bad player. all am trying to say, there was not need of wasting money on him when we have more pressing issues in the squad. Am sure, even Brendan has to scratch his head a few times to get him a position in the team when coutinho is playing. and what message does signing him send to the likes of texeira?

Management change could be sooner than we think if we lose to Carlisle fair play to fsg for giving rodgers a chance to rectify last season but another season starts with yet more dismal performances and results sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say its not working and make the change let's hope fsg do it sooner than later as this seasons still salvageable if br goes good luck to him its never nice someone loosing their job (if it happens) but he just wasnt right for the position

I appreciate the questions are coming thick and fast after Maccas post.

I'm understand you can't say who we have spoken to but is it someone that has been mentioned on here or not?

Is he likely to be interested or to early to tell?

You don't have an idea then?

Could be one of a thousand managers currently out of work, those that stand out are obviously anchelloti but there are some not so obvious ones. Fillipo inzaghi, donadoni, seedorf, montella, schaaf, etc.

Wouldn't like to second guess, but will not hold my breath tbh, especially after the summer and disatrous decision to keep brendan on.

Macca specifically mentioned on sabbatical though. would managers being out of job without any reason be classified as sabbatical?

Only saw MoD highlights but looked better shape balance to the team, as Rogers does he falls into a formation that works for him, last poor than incredible run that fell off a cliff towards the end.
Question ifs do we have patience or is it a case he's no learning and won't learn.
I personally think he's got the squad but not sure he's the right man any more, my problem is he should have been big enough to go when they sacked his number 2s pas or and marsh
Finally I'm sorry you need a keeper who's going to win you points not lose them.

1. 3 at the back is not the answer to me, It simply means take an attacker and put a defender. More over, It leaves huge space behind the Wing backs. A good manager would exploit it.

2. He is the one to blame for not replcing Migs last year infact should have been repalced 2 years ago. Felt sorry for Moereno when Migs kicked one into the stands.

22 Sep 2015 08:39:20
Harry makes a very good point. It's very negative playing 5 defenders particularly at home. And we still managed to concede. We were overrun by a very average Norwich side in the midfield particularly in the first half.

Essex

Good point brining up the issue with current midfield. The one common factor in our all games this season has been our very ineffective midfield. And this would continue untill Henderson is back or BR changes the personal.

There was an incident when Can ran with the ball from the defense to the opposition 6 yard box but litrelaly did not knew what to do next with the ball.

Except Lucas None of our midfilder could read the game well and this is a worrying sign.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 10:32:24
It was more numbers than personnel. We had Lucas and Milner against 4 Norwich midfielders most of the time. Idea with the diamond is you dominate the midfield so I've no idea why Rodgers is adamantly against it.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 12:55:04
I find the avoidance of the diamond a little bizarre given our previous success, outside of it would mean some tough decisions that Rodgers is not keen on facing up too, in terms of starters.

Agree2 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 13:34:32
BR does not believe in playing the diamond. He never has if you read Ed01`s comments on the issue. Bielsa advised him to do that in order to get the best out of LS and Studge as well as Couts, RS, Hendo and SG which worked results wise. Why he hasn`t switched to it and never did it last season is only down to his ego and his unwillingness to change his pathetic philosophy of pass, pass, pass in our own half which is a proven failure. He is the one who refuses to play the diamond and the high press and that is his fault.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 06:43:01
Hi Eds,

Glad to see Ings playing as striker and not wing back. Do you think just playing inform players in their natural position itself will make huge difference.
I think if a player is not doing good, replace with a player who can play in that position. I think rodgers is messing it, by selecting players he want to play in a team and somehow accommodate them. It might work sometimes, but i don't that is a permanent solution.

Thank you.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it makes a huge difference. It is bizarre so few managers see that.}

22 Sep 2015 12:55:15
When I was at school, I used to play right winger, but tell me to defend, I was almost next to useless, so of course it makes a difference! I could never have played CB, even with better coaching and BR needs to realise that or his future is doomed!

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 13:37:23
BR is so determined to mould a player into what he thinks the player can do instead of focusing on what the player can actually do and Ings is a good example of that. Another many fall under that category. he wants to be able to say, "I made that player better" instead of just getting the very best out of the player in his natural position. his ego will be his downfall if it already hasn`t been based on Macca`s comments

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Sep 2015 06:11:22
So I think this is Brendan Rogers plan for every season. Start off ok, with a few wins(to show that he has learnt a bit, and changed), then go through a few bad loses(to show that its a new squad that needs time to click), then he changes the formation to a back 3 and wins some games on the trott(to show how "genious" he is). And then finish just out of the top 4. Uses this to convince the owners to keep him for 1 more season.

He is severely under pressure, but nothing has happened yet. When it does happen, I expect it to be swift though, with little real warning, as it is one man making the decision. It will just be when he decides enough is enough it will happen.}

22 Sep 2015 04:38:05
Hey guys,

One area I hope feedback could be provided from Eds and the community is the role of captain.
With Henderson out and Milner wearing the armband it kind of irks me from both a length of service and a squad perspective.
I have always thought the captain is the on field leader/general, someone to manage players emotions either by example or having a word with them, someone that people could look to when the game is on the line and an individual who represents the club as an ambassador.
There is nothing personal against Milner, I just think that someone coming in after 3 months and receiving the armband has not had time to earn the role and responsibility for the club. This then adds concern that our manager does not see anyone in the squad who is befitting the role, or has leadership qualities on the field, which makes me question the character of our players.

I would of thought after Henderson, someone like Coutinho, Sakho or Skrtel (bias aside, Rodgers does look to Skrtel) would be our V/C.

Does the captain role serve a purpose besides coin toss, am I over thinking a new player being given the armband?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - a captain is meant to be more than just someone to take the coin toss. They are meant to be the leader on and off the pitch. Milner was given the vice captaincy purely because he is experienced, not because he has ever shown any captain-like qualities. It was just another in a long list of nonsensical decisions.}

22 Sep 2015 06:30:49
I think he has it in him but as a new joiner and with a squad lacking confidence and a manager on the brink, it needed someone established. Who though? Lucas had been marginalised by BR, same with Sakho, Llalana not a regular, Coutinho too young, only really leaving Skrtel. Not sure how much of a leader he is, your thoughts Ed? Who would you have gone for?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - between Lucas and Sakho for me.}

22 Sep 2015 09:07:15
I think the captain can be anyone in the squad but you need the right qualities - Of course normally everyone heads towards the oldest member of the squad as they've been there and done it for LFC but sometimes new blood can be better but its vital to have the right qualities - I captained both club and country in Wales and was always taught as rule number 1 is always be vocal - Some captains are different of course but if you constantly hear your captain/leader calling absolutely everything in a game it instantly makes you feel better and that you know he's there - When a game isn't going well your the one who needs to be standing out, raising your voice so the players know your the one up for the challenge to turn it around not shy into the background which i feel Milner does slightly - Hard work alone doesn't cut it as that is expected of a captain. I also own a large call centre that have leaders in the room and they are always taught to stay vocal throughout the day so the other employees know your there to help them through the day and get the results etc - A captain is someone who demands the best and nothing less

Ed001

Has Brendan lost the confidence of the dressing room do you think.

I think the owners have to be very careful how long they leave this go on, another trophy less season and poor league finish will see the likes of coutinho look to move on. And who would blame them.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he lost it last season, a lot of the players like him, but confidence is very low throughout the club in general, but with him in particular. We will hear the usual nonsense quotes from players, but none of it means anything.}

22 Sep 2015 06:37:24
Not surprised it's low, we are no closer to answering some fairly basic questions like

- what's our best formation for this squad
- what's our playing style (target man or twin strikers, high press or not)
- who are our best CBs
- is migs good enough
- is Lucas a regular or not, and do we need a DM or a playmaker
- wingers or attacking mids
- is Can a midfielder or not

Unfortunately Rogers also seems to be on a different planet to all the fans on most of these questions
