I don't understand our reasoning for going after players of relegated clubs i. e wijnaldum (done deal) and amavi (interested) . It just shows a lack of ambition going for players from these clubs. Go for hector at 20 odd mill who is proven and very experienced other than amavi at 10-15 mill inexperienced, relegated last season (albeit injured) but why do we go for a player who has been out all last season.

Surely you must know, that just because we want a player and may be able to afford the fee, doesn't mean he'll want to come/ a deal can be reached/ we can afford the wages. We are currently a team outside the top 4 with no euro to offer. Also, it makes little difference whether a player we sign came from a relegated club. Milner came from a top club with a few titles under his belt and yet people still moaned.

21 Jul 2016 23:50:55
Leicester won the league with:
-Simpson who I believe has been relegated previously with Newcastle.
-Huth who I believe was relegated with Middlesborough.
-Albrighton who was deemed not good enough for a Villa team which got relegated.
-Dyer on loan from Swansea who were fighting relegation.
-Jamie Vardy who came from non league football just 4 years ago.

Am I right in thinking that the best midfielder in the league, Moussa Dembele was relegated with Fulham as an average second striker notorious for not scoring?

Seriously mate, come on. Where a player came from doesn't automatically make them a failure.

21 Jul 2016 23:57:00
Players have to want to join the club.

22 Jul 2016 00:35:38
Were they relegated due to this one player, is what you should really be asking instead.

22 Jul 2016 00:50:00
I have to agree, I've been baffled by some of our transfer activity this summer. I'd just rather get a player garurenteed to sort out a position rather buy the cheaper option who has the potential to be better than who we already got, he flops and then we constantly do the same thing over and over again. I just rather spend £20m on a player that will be better than what we have rather than keep spending £15m on the same position every other summer.

Also before all the BS, I don't mean marquee or big name signings. No one knew who Jonas hector was before we where apparently interested in him, or dahoud for example.

22 Jul 2016 01:13:08
Also to bear in mind that Hector was mediocre all last season,
He performed well at the (worse euros) ever, do you gamble on that stat.

22 Jul 2016 01:38:01
I understand the frustations. We just have to accept that Klopp is the manager, and those are the manager's choices. It's time to back whoever joins, and reserve the judgment. Maybe they will turn out to be good signings. There are lots of possibilities. We don't know yet.

22 Jul 2016 01:39:12
You realise it is possible to buy players for less than 20m that will be better than what we have.

Seasons aren't won or lost in the transfer window either.

22 Jul 2016 08:57:04
Maybe klipperty had been watching him before he went to villa and knows what he is capable of.

21 Jul 2016 22:45:27
Just heard from a very reliable source.

Liverpool are very close to sealing a large deal for a world class LB

Name given was German Shepherd
Should add some bite to the defence

😉.

21 Jul 2016 23:54:29
That's possibly the worst joke I have ever heard.

21 Jul 2016 23:57:39
Never heard of him.

22 Jul 2016 01:17:27
Klucas, agreed. You know a joke is falling flat to the extent you have to reread it to make sure there wasn't an astute actual point being made and it actually was just astoundingly bad.

22 Jul 2016 07:46:31
Why a German Shepherd? Maybe a Jack Russell for left back or even a pug.

22 Jul 2016 08:34:34
I've heard they are re signing Stan Collymore.

21 Jul 2016 22:40:26
Based on reactions here Wijnaldum is not a good signing and it seems more recently than others times its a culture to bash and slate players before they play a match for the club. I can remember the same treatment towards Sturridge and though he has issue with staying fit when playing he is a top striker. I'm not saying he is going to come at LFC and blow magic dust out his bong, but back the manager and know that apart from Coutihno and Firmino (who played as a striker) we lacked goals from midfield were Lallana failed to deliver and let's be honest Milner is no Ronaldo and if I recall amoung his goals were penalties. Relax a bit fans and let Klopp do what he gets paid for to make decisions that either work or fail. thanks for listening YNWA.

The other person who I wonder about is Firmino. Is he still a possible departure Eds?

Many thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - Many things are possible.}

21 Jul 2016 22:40:03
Hey ed, are unicorns possible?

21 Jul 2016 22:28:24
I will admit, I am one of the hyper critical Liverpool fans. Especially with regards to klopps transfer abilities. I said when he first came here, he's a great manager but everyone has a weakness. not knowing his, I speculated it was in the transfer window. Only time will tell if right or wrong. That being said. I was not a fan of wijnaldum. Not due to price or anything like that, but the fact that he had one relatively good season. And that has come back to bite us before. Now that he is here though, let's get excited about him as a player. He scores goals from midfield. Something we've been missing. Can, though I think will be world class, is still young and prone to mistakes. This take some pressure off. Henderson may or may not have injury problems, wijnaldum reduces the pressure to always play Henderson. I love Lucas, and I think that in another time, allen could have been good and I think he's a decent squad player. However, Wijnaldum can defend better than allen and go forward better than Lucas (both of whom seem to be on the way out) . So while I will continue to be pessimistic and hyper critical of players and decisions before they happen, as soon as they arrive let's get behind the team. We've got a great team and are a few transfers out and in from being real contenders. Not to mention. Our youth have looked brilliant.

The sooner people realise that the lad played in a shabite team, around shabite players with miserable fans, then the better they might just realise that the circumstances weren't exactly ideal for this type of player.

Some players just don't click at certain clubs for whatever reason.

21 Jul 2016 23:09:16
He was Dutch player of the year before his "one good season" at Newcastle.
The lad has ability, there's no doubt about that.

22 Jul 2016 00:15:51
How did the Dutch do at The Euro's btw?

22 Jul 2016 01:42:58
How did England do? Didn't they have the two top scorers in the Premier League?

International team performances have not a lot to do with individual abilities.

22 Jul 2016 08:08:54
I beleive England were beaten in the embarassment of the century, i wouldn't go there personally.

21 Jul 2016 22:25:12
Evening eds,
Just a quick one, with all the talk of Flanagan going on loan and the new centre back coming in, do you think possibly klopp has had a rethink and is going to give Gomez the season to ease back in covering full back positions and possibly taking over at left back from Moreno when fully fit? Just a thought as I doubt he would want to break his promise to the lad but if we bring in a left back with the new centre back it looks unlikely Gomez would get much of a look in.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - No.}

21 Jul 2016 23:24:11
Cheers ed just thought maybe an option since that where he started last year and don't seem to be having much luck with left backs.

21 Jul 2016 21:26:08
Any news on Coutinho? I expect him to go, just a feeling based on our purchases. Believe we are doing our business now in the knowledge he is off. But what do I know.

Believable4 Unbelievable7

22 Jul 2016 08:04:49
I think you could be correct. We're seriously overloaded in midfield now, if it's not Coutinho then it must be Lallana or Milner (which wouldn't bother me at all) .

21 Jul 2016 21:15:10
Really need to sort the left back issue, still hope we can get Chilwell but looks doubtful now, Reckon we'll get someone who hasn't been linked at all.

Believable4 Unbelievable4

21 Jul 2016 21:34:44
I think you are probably right, Square tomato. Wouldn't be surprised if it is a left back from the German league who we have never shown interest in before. Either way, I hope it will be an improvement over Alberto Moreno because that man has driven me to near heart failure on many occasions.

21 Jul 2016 21:50:21
Exactly Tomato. I thought we'll be getting that one first. I just hope we are still prioritizing that. Still got time.

21 Jul 2016 22:54:50
If Chilwell is as good / has as much potential as it is believed I'd love him here - a good season with no europe would aid his development (more one on one during the week for coaching) .

I hope we get him, even if we wait a year the price is going to be similar for the compensation - bite the bullet and get him in!

22 Jul 2016 00:11:52
Chilwell originates from my town and I know this might sound a bit he said/ she said but, my sons female friend is very good friends with chilwell and he told her he's dying to come Liverpool and we have told him stay there for 1 more season and we will sign him at end of next season by tribunal.

21 Jul 2016 20:34:46
Hi folks and Eds.

Eds,

Sorry, changing the main subject of transfers etc for a minute.

Do any of you know if Carlsberg UK have sponsored the players lounge in the new Main Stand?

After speaking to the main host last season, she was unsure if they were re-investing this season or not.

The temporary one they had in the hospitality tent was great albeit small (can be excused for the situation of course)

It's a fantastic facility to meet old and current players and to chat to some real legends of the game whilst enjoying the game as well.
Be good to know if possible please?

21 Jul 2016 20:32:57
Ffs no one can say Fsg are tight surely, there spending some money whether you agree with the new signings or not.

Believable8 Unbelievable4

21 Jul 2016 21:11:35
They are good owners. The committee (no matter who's on it) are the ones to point the finger at
But ultimately, FSG are still to blame for everything because they put the trust in these guys and employ them in the first place.

21 Jul 2016 21:14:20
Couldn't agree more. And yet.

There'll be plenty on here who will say otherwise. Ridiculous really!

@DontgoCountinho I'm sure you'll disagree?

21 Jul 2016 21:43:52
As the eds have mentioned they want to win the title as it would push the club into the billionaires club and then they can either reap the benefits or sell the club and get a return on their investment. To steer from the path they have set us on with Klopp would be extremely foolhardy at this point and I say let the manager have the players he wants and let's see what happens. Of course I'm pretty happy with the problems we've addressed in the squad though I think we are showing a tremendous and probably worrying g amount of faith in our new signings. particularly in Matip and Karius case. Wijnaldum for me can be great if we as fans get behind him and encourage him to give his all.

22 Jul 2016 00:27:48
We've also recouped a hell of a lot of money too. But you people always forget that part.

21 Jul 2016 20:07:59
Was wondering if anyone knew if Kent has been left out of the US tour, he was seen at the bus with the rest of the team, but was then seen walking away with who I think was his mum, if he has I assume it is because of the late arrival of Wijnaldum, shame really, he's looked bright when I've seen him play, but I think another loan for him as I'm not sure if he's ready for the first team, but you never know.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

21 Jul 2016 20:23:16
He is not on the tour like Woodburn, and as you say, is expected to make a loan switch to the Championship where there is plenty of interest in him.

21 Jul 2016 21:45:38
I think Kent was left off because he will get a loan move but that's just a gut feeling. Hope he moves somewhere he can start some matches and he continues his growth.

21 Jul 2016 23:00:14
Woodburn is more to do with age etc. isn't it?

21 Jul 2016 23:34:39
Yes. Woodburn has had a good experience with the team, and will need to be gradually allowed to develop. He is expected to be a regular at u23s next season.

21 Jul 2016 19:54:08
I'm not slagging anyone off here just thought I would share this.

This is an extract taken from Jurgen klopps autobiography recently released:

"I scouted him when i was at dortmund [georgino wijnaldum] when he was at feyenord, i knew then he wouldn't make it at the very top and if I were to sign him now it'd only be for a quick fix"

Just seems a strange signing. We are well stocked in his positions as well. Even those not behind the signing are agreeing with klopp.

Believable1 Unbelievable10

21 Jul 2016 20:08:13
Twitter? I understand this was written by a Newcastle fan and made to look like Klopp himself wrote it.

21 Jul 2016 20:11:03
Klopp doesn't have an autobiography?

21 Jul 2016 20:12:05
Managers and players who are still in work shouldn't write books-period.

21 Jul 2016 20:23:58
This quote was not in Klopp's autobiography, and was made up nonsense by a sad Newcastle fan.

21 Jul 2016 21:16:40
"I believe in training, you believe in transfers,
Ian Ayre believes in riding Unicorns naked with the almighty Ken Aguero"

- Jurgan Klopp 2016.

21 Jul 2016 19:44:30
My biggest concern is that our transfer policy doesn't seem to have really changed since Rodgers left and Klopp arrived.

1) The youth prospects are in with basically no chance of competitive game time this season given the bloated nature of the squad and our lack of European competition (and based on promises made to individuals by Klopp) . Much like Rodgers tenure.

2) We are buying too many players and players that are really not needed (Wijnaldum, Klavan) . Like the Rodgers tenure.

3) The way we price, and choose to pay for players, is still ridiculous. We refuse to meet Leicesters price for our first-choice left-back. We refuse to meet Udinese's Zielinski price despite behaving very, very poorly. And now we go out and splash £25million on Wijnaldum!? It is madness. No matter your thoughts on the player no one can argue, with any sincerity, that he is worth so much. Our transfer policy is appalling and lacks organization and it harms us season after season. Like the Rodgers tenure - think Benteke - same sort of overpriced stupidity.

I WAS optimistic about the forthcoming season. Our current transfer activity has torpedoed that optimism. If anyone can tell me how this transfer activity is different from Rodgers, aside from Klopp controlling it all, I would love to hear it. Mistakes are being made again and it is really getting tiresome.

p. s. if Wijnaldum really is a replacement for Coutinho then I will have officially lost all faith in the club and, to a large extent, Klopp. Coutinho is one of only two world class players in our squad - we sell him we sell any sense of ambition.

Believable3 Unbelievable17

21 Jul 2016 20:03:03
Although he has made a questionable signing, the fact he signed players in the positions we needed (GK, CB, RW), I feel that instantly made him different from Rodgers. If we get a left back in without any other surprise signings I feel it's a good summer, so long as we get rid of the dead wood amongst the squad. I must say it does make me laugh how one or two signings (Wijnaldum and Klavan) has made some of the supporters start to turn on Klopp already, We shouldn't blindly trust Klopp, but the word fickle springs to mind.

21 Jul 2016 20:13:40
We seem to be asking more for our fringe players, that is for certain.
Maybe give Klopp's signings a chance?

21 Jul 2016 20:14:54
"We shouldn't blindly judge Klopp but the word fickle springs to mind" - but if somebody does voice an opinion in opposition to something Klopp does they are immediately branded 'fickle'. Boss logic.

21 Jul 2016 20:26:15
It is difficult to compare what Rodgers did with Klopp simply because we don't know if Klopp will use his new recruits like Rodgers will.

So, while the transfer policy may look a little strange, keep in mind that like Rodgers, Klopp has the last word on any transfers.

21 Jul 2016 20:30:44
You think they are players we don't need, but klopp obviously thinks we do. It will take minimum 3 windows to aort the squad out and it means we will have holes and overloads over that time.

21 Jul 2016 21:08:05
It was trust but fair enough, I was just stating the fact, some of the fans have started to slag of his transfers before they've been given the chance to play.

21 Jul 2016 21:13:38
But we got 15 million for Ibe, for me, 7/ 8 mill would have been enough, so it does work both ways .

21 Jul 2016 21:19:15
Difference being Klopp is buying quality players for positions we needed addressing and before we start thinking we are overloaded I'd wait till the window closes as there are going to be a lot leaving and loaned.

Maybe a few surprises in store.

21 Jul 2016 23:03:01
I'm baffled by your post I wonder if I search for your other posts will I find you saying in earlier posts that u believe in klopp now without even a ball kicked this season being kicked you are giving out just to address a few of your points 1 we have already got rid 8 or 9 players already with another 5 or 6 to go maybe more 2 there seems to be a deluded sense on this site that we have the best up and coming young players in the world there's no doubt we have some exciting talent coming up in are ranks but to suggest that they should be playing a lot of games or replacing the likes of full international players like joe Allen or kolo is crazy 3 it's klopps first transfer window and already people are writing off his signings comparing them to Rodgers signing to me this is crazy why can't you wait to the end of the season before having a go.

21 Jul 2016 23:08:04
I think FSG have supported both managers in buying players before some have been sold.

I think Klopp has addressed the problem areas apart from LB (thus far) . Rodgers bought players for the sake of it IMO then we he had them all didn't know how to play them / fit them in.

Rodgers never spent anytime with the reserves, U21, youth teams; Klopp has and still bought 2 surprises (CB and soon to be AM) we have to assume that he doesn't feel the other youth players are ready (which may be correct or not given that he has been watching them and as Ed's say the previous non thinking of developing players on loan - NB: Branagan rumoured to go on loan to wigan but we want him to play 75% of games he is available) .

At the end of the last season everyone was available - that should tell you what Klopp thought of the squad / was prepared to seel to buy in other areas.

Lets hope he got it right; support the players regardless of what you believe / read!

22 Jul 2016 06:10:12
I am not 'slagging off' Klopp's signings but I am not prepared to just 'have faith' either and accept everything without raising a few questions which are, in my opinion, fair. I have simply pointed out that Klopp is doing what Rodgers did with regards to transfers - if people are struggling to get their head around that idea then there really isn't much of a discussion to be had. We've bought two players this past week who we did not need - one for a very high price (who is of questionable quality) - if Rodgers would have made such a signing he would have been slaughtered on here, but if Klopp does it it is somehow an inspired move? Sorry but I don't get it. It also looks like the chances for youth players are going to be slim to none this season - we have, instead of using the youth, bought senior players to provide cover. The same as Rodgers. I do not like, or agree, with this approach - I didn't like it when Rodgers did it and I don't like it now - just because Klopp is doing it does not mean it is the right thing to do.

I like Klopp, I like his style of play and the way he tries to get 100% out of every player but, in regards to transfers, he is clearly fallable. Can we all stop pretending he is the messiah and just look at this with a critical eye instead of saying every single thing Klopp does is wonderful?

And yes, to underline my point, IF (and this is a big IF) Klopp expects Coutinho to leave, and his replacement for him is Wijnaldum, then I will lose a lot of confidence in him. Coutinho is world-class, the best in his position at the club and would leave a gaping hole - if Wijnaldum is his replacement (and again I appreciate this is purely speculative) then it is a terrible piece of transfer activity - just because Klopp has ratified it does not suddenly make all transfers gold or all players signed world-class.

p. s. as for us getting reasonable fees for players? Yes, that's great, but this is hardly down to Klopp is it?

21 Jul 2016 19:26:29
Well, I for one am happy.
Last season we moaned about a lack of goals from midfield and a lack of width at times (both sorted)
We moaned about leadership at the back between goalkeepers and centre backs (also sorted)
We moaned about not having enough quality to bring off the bench (sorted too now)
And most of all in my eyes anyway the whole feel of the Rodgers squad had just gone a bit stale at times, it was obvious a lot of players showed glimpses or were good to put a shift in but win a league? Naah not for me, I think we're lucky to have a forward thinking manager who knows what he wants, I welcome all the new signings as I think each and every one give us something we didn't have last year and I think its exciting that Klopps thought right let's weed out who can't do the job and let's get in who fits the puzzle.
He was always going to assemble his own squad so let's have less bickering about it and more support, if this lot turn out winners then i'm sure the groans will subside, we can't sit back forever waiting for this lot to do a Leicester city otherwise theyd have done it for Rodgers
Bring em all on, i like the signings and they all get my support!
Now whose playing left back? .

Believable9 Unbelievable2

21 Jul 2016 20:34:43
Lack of goals from midfield wasn't my complaint and still isn't, it's that we're as soft as sh*t through the middle and teams see us as a soft touch, that's still not been addressed and it will cause us problems again this year.

21 Jul 2016 20:35:35
For me I would play klavan looks like a no nonsense defender, who has a ton of experience.

21 Jul 2016 21:19:44
Hendo, Can, Grujic, what a bunch of weak softies.

21 Jul 2016 23:40:35
Problem is with Lucas, Hendo and Can in midfield you get zero goals. With Wijnaldum and Grujic if they get 5-10 each we are up on goals from last season. The lack of goals puts us under undue pressure as when we're on top of teams we start to panic and lose our formation trying to break through.

I'd also try to coach Can as a DM. He's quick, strong and a good defender, perfect for the role if he can get his positioning right. He can also pick a pass.

I have a sneaky feeling Hendo will leave this window or next and possibly Couts aswell which suddenly makes these signings make sense. I also don't understand the confusion about the Klavan signing. We've lost Toure and Skrtel and replaced them with Klavan and Matip. A huge improvement in my book.

I wouldn't feel comfortable if our only back ups were a teenager whose never played at centre back in the PL and Ilori who is obviously not good enough. You can't leave yourself one long term injury away from having an inexperienced youth player in one of the most important positions on the pitch.

21 Jul 2016 19:12:23
Hi ed I know klopp has spoken about his admiration for tielemans in the past but are we showing any kind of interest if he becomes available over the coming seasons?

Ed1 mentioned he was top. chpice for spurs, is that still the case?

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Tielemans has attracted long-term interest from Chelsea with Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Juventus, Borussia Monchengladbach, Napoli, Spurs, Barcelona and Marseille all showing an interest in the past year. Plenty of other sides will have had him scouted. Chelsea have actively been speaking with his club since January 2014 but would even now need to send him on loan for, I imagine, at least a year or more. Atletico spoke with Anderlecht this past summer and the player liked the idea of a move to Madrid but nothing could be resolved for a move at the time. The problem with a move to England is that he is certainly not ready to step right in to the first team at many of the more senior clubs but it may not stop Spurs looking to bid. If he accepts that and a loan, then a move is possible. Whilst Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea may well have all looked to offers in January they knew a move before the summer is unlikely. Juventus are keeping a slightly low profile but if others bid then they will as well. I also understand that Piero Ausilio attended the Spurs vs Anderlecht game to watch two players - Tielemans being one. I suspect an offer from Borussia Monchengladbach would be welcomed and a deal done this summer as he would drop straight in to the first team. Milan see Tielemans as an option to Zielinski and Kovacic.}

21 Jul 2016 18:55:43
Before I start this isn't a list of who I want to leave this is a list of who I expect to leave.

Goalkeepers
Unchanged

Defenders
Flanagan (loan) . I think it will be similar to wards situation where he will go for a year and then come back to replace Clyne next season.
Llori - has potential but won't get game time
Wisdom - same as above may get a reprieve if he is seen as cover for Clyne. Think it's more likely that will be gomez's job in the team.
Midfield
Lucas- one I don't want to see go but don't see him sticking around for his own reasons to play the odd game. Shame really.
Allen - bid accepted, would want regular game time.
Lallana- similar to Allen I expect will leave for games, only one of him and Milner will stay imo and Milner edges it for assists.
Markovic- needs to leave to reignite career. Ojo and mane are ahead currently.
Alberto - same as Markovic
Balotelli - could be a star but just doesn't care.
Benteke - studge and origi fit klopps style better and won't get games if he stays.

Think they are all likely to leave and barring Lucas no one really controversial.
Flanagan I think his loan is more for long term goals which is the impression I get about most of klopps dealings.

Previously we would make a decision, a loan for example and we would forget about them by the season after. By that point we would of replaced them and hence why we have a bloated squad and loads of wasted young talent.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

21 Jul 2016 19:27:41
God sake God name is Ilori! It starts with an I not an L how difficult is it for people to grasp?!

21 Jul 2016 20:21:42
Made a mistake in the haste of writing it, disappointed that a spelling mistake is all you took from the post. Shame.

21 Jul 2016 20:30:34
Flanagan needs to prove his fitness first and then prove next season he is better than Clyne. I don't expect him to displace Clyne.

Neither Lallana nor Milner is going nowhere regardless of the antipathy towards both by a large number in our fanbase. Klopp likes both players and they will be staying at least until January, but they definitely will need to up their game as Wijnaldum, a fit again Henderson, Grujic and Mane will all likely be competing with them for a spot in the team.

21 Jul 2016 20:43:22
Ashy, people still can't spell Skrtel never mind Ilori.

21 Jul 2016 18:06:22
So it seems that somewhere in the region of £60m, probably more with fees and add ons, has acquired us Mane and Wijnaldum. I'm split on what to make of that - whilst they are players which have undoubted quality they do come with widely known question marks over their heads around work ethic / attitude. Maybe though, for 60m, acquiring 2 youngish offensive players who have displayed [some] strong premier league performances for a club without European footy is at the top end of the kind of business we could hope to do. What are Ed's views on this? Good value, overpaid or just general 'what we can expect' given big to deals, no Europe and what else might've been available? Cheers.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

21 Jul 2016 18:57:33
Amongst that you make a good point. We do not have European football, we are likely not to be seen as challengers or even by some top four. These might be the top of the table we are sat at, these might be the best we can aquire at this stage, players who might get us to the next level but not from that next level.

People might want Sane, Gotze or last window Depay. Have any of them been alive since we one the title? Sane was about 9 when we won the CL.

Klopp will get us there and the next batch of amazing we will be able to attract, until then we go with what we've got and both players have proven they can do it in the Prem which is what we need. Roll on the season and let's exceed.

21 Jul 2016 20:31:56
The attitude/ work ethic problem (if it exists) will be dealt with by Klopp - you can be sure of that much.

21 Jul 2016 20:43:01
Max ren. one of the best post iv seen in here for a long time.

I get the concern over bloated squad, but there will certainly be departures. The only question is who and when.
What I think klopp is trying to do is give us options. Too many times over the last season or two, you would like at the bench and see only like for like replacements. The signings so far seem an attempt to offer different options, the ability to have players that will help a change of tactics or formation rather than shoehorning people into roles they don't suit.
I still think the kids will play a role. There's just no way they will be introduced en
masse. They will be drip fed game time, given opportunities. The onus is on them to grab them and run with them, both in matches and in training.

Eds/ reds

I have a question.

For the fees paid I imagine GW and Mane will be starters for the season ahead. I also think coutinho and firmino (klopp favourites) will be starters.

So where does this leave sturridge, origi, ings, ojo, lallana and Milner (and others I may have forgotten)

We have a lot if players fighting for those front 4 spots!

Believable4 Unbelievable2

21 Jul 2016 17:54:37
I think 1 or 2 of those will be sold (Couts and Lallana? ) .

21 Jul 2016 18:02:15
I thought couts but ed suggested the other day at the moment he looks like he's staying.

21 Jul 2016 18:17:37
I don't think fees paid comes into it really. Liverpool is littered with past and present players that have arrived with big fees and played bit parts only to be sold at a later stage. You hope that these big priced players make a difference, reality is that few do. Wait and see is my motto from now on.

21 Jul 2016 19:30:52
City are interested in Firmino. Also Barcelona looked at him before we did.

Barcelona and PSG are interested in Coutinho.

Ojo is still only 19.

Lallana and Milner are hopefully moving on. They just aren't good enough for the wages they are paid. Which ironically might be the biggest problem when it comes to shifting them!

I don't think we will lose both of Coutinho and Firmino. But I am resigned to losing one of them.

21 Jul 2016 21:00:31
Wijindum will play in a midfield 2, why none of you seam to think of that as a option is beyond me.

He played midfield for psv and was really good.

21 Jul 2016 16:32:00
Hi Ed's,

Was curious to ask, shouldn't the Value of a Player from a relegated Team be less and give the buying club a upper hand while negotiating?

If GW is really a 25 Mill buy aren't there better options who play in similar positions in other leagues eg. Hakan Calhanoglu, Younes Belhanda, or others.

The Salary and Fees Liverpool are paying for GW if paid same to other players even they could be tempted to join Liverpool.

I feel its that simple but it could be more complicated, help to share your thoughts.
Thanks.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about - sorry.}

21 Jul 2016 16:58:45
The value is what the club is prepared to pay, but having said that its a lot of money for a player we don't actually need.

21 Jul 2016 18:17:32
If he had been plying his trade in a championship team all season i would agree. However he was a premiership player last year and would like it to stay that way because he is better than the championship, so he is still a £25 million player.

Would kante or mahrez be £10 million players if leicester got relegated instead of winning the league?

21 Jul 2016 23:39:17
He means we should have tempted any other player for that transfer fee.

21 Jul 2016 16:29:50
Looking at the transfer activity, I think Klopp expects Coutinho to leave. I can't really see any other reason for bringing in Wijnaldum. Should be an interesting season. Klopp's full throttle style should suit us well this year with no europe and less games. Looking forward to seeing the reds on the field in August.

Believable5 Unbelievable5

21 Jul 2016 17:20:21
Im convinced coutinho must be off.

21 Jul 2016 18:22:23
You're looking forward to our best player leaving?

21 Jul 2016 18:25:27
I still reckon it could be lallana that's being replaced. I know 25m for a squad player is a ridiculous amount but the figures today are massively inflated and we did pay a similar amount for lallana in the first place.

Also think it's a case of buy before sell so we don't have even higher prices being brandished about. A risky strategy though.

21 Jul 2016 21:00:20
I am convinced Henderson is off late in the window. Wijnaldum is no replacement for Coutinho ( Klopp ain't that foolish ) He has played the deeper role at PSV.

21 Jul 2016 15:19:51
With all this talk of Wijnaldum (hope i spell it right) I thought i would open up a new discussion

I was just wondering whether we have any interest in youth players i know a few have come already with a lot leaving with the new idea of quality of quantity.

Does anyone know who the new youth players are that have come in and what views people have on them?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

21 Jul 2016 16:07:50
If the youth have any sense they wouldn't come to us.

Again bringing in an older player (Klavan) and stopping the chance of youth stepping up.

21 Jul 2016 16:24:03
Surely Klavan was brought in to offer experience and leadership. Gomez is injured and for me Wisdom and Llori are not good enough. The fee was minimal for this day and age, to me it makes sense and I believe he will surprise fans.

21 Jul 2016 17:38:06
We have matip, lovren, sakho and Gomez as recognised CBs.

Yes Gomez and sakho maybe injured but there not out for the season.

So when all are fit that probably pushes Gomez to 5th choice.

Surely at some point you have to use youth as cover.

Rather than buying wijnaldum we should have given ibe a good run.

21 Jul 2016 18:27:39
The more competition for places the better, who's to say Gomez will be 5th choice, if he plays well enough he will get games. But think Gomez is being lined up as cover for the rb position.

21 Jul 2016 18:44:28
sure why not play 11 young players.

21 Jul 2016 19:03:05
Sorry Lavers but Ibe was awful in the majority of games last season. 15 million was a good bit of business, wish him all the best though.

21 Jul 2016 19:07:21
He's not injured.

21 Jul 2016 19:47:04
Grujic is pretty young.

21 Jul 2016 22:44:05
AJGREDS

It's about giving them decent game time and allowing them to settle in the 1st team.

When Flanagan first played I'm sure most thought that he's no chance, but after having a good run most think he's our best RB.

21 Jul 2016 15:11:03
Ideal business before the window shuts, thoughts everyone:
Out:
Lallana, allen, markovic, chirivella, mignolet, moreno, illori, wisdom, benteke, balotelli, ings

In: hector, manninger, volland.

21 Jul 2016 15:25:03

21 Jul 2016 15:27:51
Volland has moved.

21 Jul 2016 15:28:14
For alphabetical reasons. The OP didn't have any other Cs or Is on his list. Before one of you says 'Ilori', I believe the OP, as with most other people his age, confused the 'I' for an 'L'.

21 Jul 2016 15:30:12
I disagree about some of your "outs" but i'm guessing you have forgot about Luis Alberto?

21 Jul 2016 15:34:29
Volland has signed for leverkusen. Why would you get rid of ings? The only person you said that makes sense is hector.

21 Jul 2016 15:43:38
Volland already transfered this summer so forget that one.
We're not gona sell mingolet and have manninger as no.2
Moreno isn't going anywhere. he's the only first team left back we have.
Ings isn't being sold either.
Nonsense post.

21 Jul 2016 15:44:11
Im with Tristan,

Ings out - no way, i think he will be immense this season if he stays fit

Chirevella - the lads quality, why sell him now for buttons when he will be worth a lot more in the seasons to come if given the chance.

21 Jul 2016 16:36:23
Even selling Mignolet would be a bad idea, he will be a good back up to Karius, and having a senior Goalkeeper would be a benefit to the young German.

21 Jul 2016 17:49:31
Clyne, Randall, Ilori, Wisdom, Moreno, Smith, Markovic, alberto, Balotelli, Benteke, Allen, Lallana out.

Chilwell in.

Happy days.

22 Jul 2016 10:35:20
Let's here your opinion then Kman.

21 Jul 2016 14:59:26
There are a lot of people who are concerned with transfers. Admittedly I wasn't so sure on GW and would have loved a Carvalho type but I think we should relax a little. Klopp deserves his chance to shape his squad how he sees fit. If he doesn't think some of our youngsters or current crop are up for it then I have no problem in him signing a 30 CB. Of the current first team players they had half a season to impress Klopp and the youngsters have been given a decent go of it too in my opinion. If Klopp doesn't deem them good enough then let him bring in replacements and get rid of who he wants.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

21 Jul 2016 18:33:51
Everyone is giving klopp a chance doesn't mean we can't give our opinions. If we think he's made a mistake it has to be known, he can't just escape criticism just because he's klopp or because some people are so privledged to have him manage us. I like klopp and everyone's giving him time but he had over 50 games to evaluate the squad, that's not half the season mate. If Rogers was to make some of the same inclusions as klopp we'd be getting out our pitchforks. We will see next season. Remember no one is bigger than the club, even though some fans would lead you to believe there is.

Good afternoon fellow reds Cheers Eds! for all your hard work, with the capture (soon) of Winja Eds we are a bit overloaded with attacking midfielders, is it possible that couts or lallana could be on there way out? Squad Size

I have seen a couple of comments on hear rgearding squad size, particulalry from Ed01. I fully agree with his stand point.

For me, having a trimme ddown squad not only gives time to develop a first 11 - it also greatly benefits this in and around the first team squad.

Anything over 24 players when we have a season without the distraction of European football is simply not required.

realistuically 2x keepers vying for starting position means they compete directly against each ther intraining to start - any more than this and the others are probably demotivated as they are in a larger pool competing for one place

A strating back 4 plus a couple who can cover across the line with youth players below this is plenty
(Clyne/ Matip/ Sakho/ Moreno) with (Flanno/ Gomez and outh for cover)

if we play 2x DMs how many do we need? If we play Hendo and Can there then Grujic and 1 other (Milner/ Lucas/ Allen) are back up, and this should be a youth player

Attacking midfield - well we have Mane, Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho vying for 3x spots and potentially GW too which means youth players further down the pecking order

And we have 4x forward competing for 1x spot. (origi/ Benteke/ Sturridge/ Ings)

A smaller squad naturally increases competition and motivation as there are less people to climb over to get a start.
A bigger squad with older players surely demtoviates the youth and those on the fringe as rhey are miles away from a starting berth.

The youth players at the club must be so disheartened with signings coming in as it just cuts off their progression.

Believable7 Unbelievable6

21 Jul 2016 12:58:43
Im thinking a lot of players will still be leaving. something like Smith, Wisdom, Ilori, Flanagan, Lucas, Milner, Allen, Alberto, Markovic, Ballotelli, Benteke. Possibly over 10 still with maybe just the addition of Chilwell or Amavi. hopefully something like this happens because even with that number of players leaving our squad wouldn't be thin.

21 Jul 2016 13:49:18
AggerDo, u may think squad need trimming, but does our supreme manager Klopp think so? Apparently he thinks differently from you guys clamouring for trimming e squad.

21 Jul 2016 14:41:45
Leekuanyew, why do you say Klopp thinks different? he has already said players will leave. there is a long time for players to leave to. many will go. we all know that will happen as soon as the right offers come.

21 Jul 2016 15:27:58
Kopdog, he adds few players and then sell a few. A lot of people expext wholesale selling of players before we add. Klopp’s idea of doing things so unconventional . it makes all those who are ITK look silly.

21 Jul 2016 12:16:11
So how about a bit of chat about the futures of hendo, milner and lallana?
Are those three more likely to be coming on from the bench by the end of this year, once the new boys have settled in and really started to challenge for starting places?
And can the new boys give what those three do- which is hard work, good pressing and a positive attitude?
What would your starting 11 be assuming the new players adapt and perform well?
By xmas I'd be hoping to have grujic and Can in a mf two, with mane, firmino and couts ahead and sturridge as striker.
Looking at the players, I do wonder if klopp is thinking more of adopting a 433 though.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

21 Jul 2016 12:53:17
Milner surely has to go, i still don't see what he offers and he isn't getting any younger.

Lallana should go if a quality replacement can be found, whether that is wijnaldum or not i do not know.

Henderson is captain and should stay, he is a good player.

21 Jul 2016 13:20:18
Spot on Wooly. I never saw reasons why Milner was signed and Lallana has now become a luxury squad member especially with Mane on the right who is better than him. I wouldn`t mind if one or both were sold this summer.

21 Jul 2016 14:01:32
Milner did well at times last season and overall was consistant, nothing special but never was really. I think he will still be dependable to Klopp, but won't worry if he goes.

Lallana stepped up from seemingly unable to complete a full 90mins to being the best presser we had. Ended up a real workhorse. Problem is, he stunted our attacks and can't score. Klopp will be buying players who can press as that's his style, so again won't worry if we lose Lallana.

Henderson. He is for me a really good player, a lot better then he gets credit for. I'm not sure what changed, maybe the injury he carried and carries is now affecting him in a more demanding set up? He is able to score, to set up and to lead. He is like an engine and will run through walls. He should be higher regarded for playing through pain as many could sit out and collect a wage. That's a captain. Never forget we missed him that season we came close. We missed him last season when he was out or not 100%. Hendo is important and still due his prime years. Imo can't lose Hendo and if fully fit, first name down for midfield.

21 Jul 2016 14:06:12
I'm very much team Hendo, I think he's as important to us as Coutinho and Sturridge and I'd see Can dropped before considering replacing Jordan.

I wouldn't sell Milner but I can't see him getting as much game time this season as he did last. He's not a player we need but, in the same vein as Lucas, he's a useful guy to have around. If injuries bite we'll regret it if he's left.

As for Lallana I'm intrigued about how his season will go, if he scored more he'd basically be the perfect Klopp player but it's that lack of goals that may see his game time curtailed. It all depends on how much Klopp depends on his terrier like qualities, if he sees the ability to win back possession as crucial then don't be surprised if Lallana starts more often than not.

21 Jul 2016 15:21:34
Didnt Milner have the most assists for us last year, I think he is well worth keeping even for leadership alone.

21 Jul 2016 12:11:19

Gomez needs to get healthy and fully fit first which could take months.

21 Jul 2016 13:22:08
If Flanagan leaves, Gomez has no chance of getting a game, now we have a situation where the 1st choice right back is not a happy bunny, we have to hope his head is right for the coming season, Flanagan must be gutted at this latest turn of events as he is Liverpool through and through, not surprising he needs time to gather his thoughts, if he is fit enough to go on loan he is fit enough to play for us, looks like randall will be clyne's understudy, as for wisdom, jones, Ilori etc pack your bags and go as you clearly have no future under jurgen klopp.

BT and plus net called Liverpool and told them their network couldn't support the ticket sale process today so you're at an unfair advantage.

21 Jul 2016 09:33:08
Totally agree. I would play Flanno before all our fullbacks. Surely he's got to be fully fit now. He seems to have been back ages?

{Ed002's Note - If Flanagan is fit enough to go on loan he is fit enough to play for Liverpool.}

21 Jul 2016 10:08:34
Lucas is only 29! How is that nearing the end of his career? Or do you mean the end of his Liverpool career?

Could it not be that to get back to full match fitness Flanno needs game time but with current fitness levels being where they are this may take time and games from Clyne so to get Flanno back to full fitness and proper competition for Clyne and Moreno a season long loan could be the best option Klopp feels. Klopp seems to like talking to his players so as long as Flanno and Klopp are happy with these plans, what we think is irrelevant.

21 Jul 2016 12:02:15
Eds. does this mean randall will be back up RB? AND wisdom?

{Ed001's Note - yes it would mean that.}

21 Jul 2016 11:19:25
Exactly ed02. Can we assume from this that Klopp doesn't rate him?

Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - He either thinks he is not ready or not suitable.}

21 Jul 2016 15:59:36
Randall looks like he offers a bit more on the ball and Clyne will start 85% of the time so maybe it comes down to what's best for Flanagan as a player.

21 Jul 2016 08:50:54
Also what's the latest on flano going to Burnley on loan? Good move if he plays every week.

When Klopp joined I saw him like a new cool uncle introduced to the family.

I am still made up with his appointment, specially when my real uncle sucks, but my point is the rose tinted glasses are off now.

I am giving him all the time in the world, he has only been here a few months but I am noticing odd things.

I don't have anyone that works at Anfield so don't know the full story. But the new CB signing confuses people.
Flanagan out on loan- personally I would have him over clyne any day and if clyne isn't happy anyway surely the club know that?

Ibe saying Rodgers style of play was his style suited best to him, . how different is it to Klopps?

And GW from Newcastle? why? if we had to shop in teeside i'd rather it Sissoko.

Also although stroppy at times ED02 has insight information, ie Klopp can only play 1 way, and players falling out with him in past etc.

I guess all I am saying is every manager will make mistakes but we shouldn't IMO put him on a throne because he has to prove it first and feel we took to him as a person but also in jubilation that Rodgers left.

Thanks all.

We have No idea what is going on behind the scene, Perhaps klopp knows he can't hold onto coutinho, Perhaps firmino is heading Out. We can't know for sure, but klopp himself says that the squad is bloated, So there must be some reasoning behind his decisions.

21 Jul 2016 08:50:34
Signing a new centre back isn't that confusing considering he can also play left back. We have sold Skrtel, released Toure, will sell Wisdom and will sell Ilori. Whilst I don't think we needed a centre back, this is not Klopps squad so perhaps he just doesn't have enough trust in the players who are already at the club.

When Rodgers signed an attacking midfielder once or twice a season it was ridiculous. Klopp signing one in his first proper window though really shouldn't be that confusing. Yes Rodgers has accumulated a lot of them. But that is exactly the point. Rodgers signed these guys, not Klopp. That doesn't mean Klopp has to rate them. Rodgers replacing his own players after 12 months was pathetic. Klopp coming in and replacing somebody elses players is not an issue for me. Again, it is not his squad.

Klopp is not getting preferential treatment, he is getting the treatment every new manager should get. He is being afforded the time to build a squad and adapt to a new club and league. Rodgers was here at least 2 to 3 years before people began to slaughter his every decision.

You are correct that Ibe said Rodgers style suited him more. So what? Rodgers style suited Balotelli more as well! That is football. And that is why some players dislike Klopps methods (never seen anyone criticise him personally or suggest a fall out) . Some attacking players prefer to conserve their energy, leaving the defending to the defenders, so that they have more energy for attacking.

I bet you won't find a defender moaning about his style. Because his style massively helps them out and relieves the pressure on them. It is attackers who don't like the gegenpressing, because energy they expend defending from the front is energy they can't use to run at people.

You are worrying over nothing. Klopp was and probably still is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in the world. Yes, he needs to adapt his style slightly for the English game. It has more matches than Germany, no winter break, a higher Tempo, more physicality etc. Therefore he needs to find a balance so that his team won't fade as the season comes to a close and we don't pull so many hamstrings. I have every faith Klopp will figure out a way to make things work. At the end of last season Klopp openly admitted he needed to rethink his approach. That is something Rodgers would never have done. The first step to learning is admitting you got things wrong.

Keep the faith.

21 Jul 2016 08:59:32
The new CB is assumed Klavan - he can also play left back. We need a left back.
Flanno on loan? I don't know the reasons either but he has had injury problems so perhaps he needs to prove his fitness?
Never listen to players (Ibe) especially if they've just left your club. Klopp's style is vastly different to Rodgers, that's plain to see. The main difference in my opinion is ethos: Rodgers believed in possession at all costs so defenders would faff about on the ball in their own penalty area in order to retain possession. Often to the team's cost. Klopp believes in using your possession for attacking intent. Possession has to have an attacking purpose. So if a long punt down the middle is the most effective use of possession in a given situation then that is what you do.
Newcastle is in TYNEside (Toon Army), not Tees-side. Maybe Sissoko does not want to move? Thought about that?
Still giving Klopp all the time in the world? Or saying he can only play one way after 9 months at the club?

Kloppo will make mistakes, he is the self-proclaimed "normal one". But he is a proven winning manager, he is good at moulding teams and getting them to gel, he is good at developing players.
Signing players who are not reaching their potential at a club is not a crime because if he can fix their attitude and maximise potential then you have a great signing and a loyal player.
Let him assemble his team and judge him on results not on whether you agree or not. If we were all good managers we wouldn't be on this site, we'd be out there earning millions.

Sterling 49mil, Pogba most likely more than 85mil, so can anyone explain why people keep saying Mane was overpriced?
He's what we needed, and he's impressed so far. He had a good last season as well.

Believable15 Unbelievable1

21 Jul 2016 08:56:39
Don't have an issue with Mane's price. Seeing him accelerate past defenders with ease shows why he's worth it.

21 Jul 2016 19:07:54
Just put things into perspective a little bit. United overpaid for martial, all complained before he kicked a ball. Now no one talks about the price. They also overpaid for depay, no one complained that much about the price, didn't have a good season, now they mention the price. We overpaid for firmino, had a decent season, no one mentions the price. Benteke has a bad season, everyone mentions the price.

Posts like these are just as stupid if you ask me. How could you say any of that before he kicks a ball and have a go at people saying we overpaid for him. The fact is, we have overpaid for him. A lot of other clubs seem to get better players for cheaper. But that doesn't mean he's not a good player or not what we needed. He is what we needed and improves our first team but for £34m it's hard to say there aren't better options out there. That's just the state of football, and English clubs especially us and United are getting held at random and sometimes very willing to give in.

If mane flops next season, you bet your money people will slate the amount paid for him, and I bet you will as well. If he has a good season no one will say anything but praise him. The fact remains we overpaid for a good player, how can you not compute?

21 Jul 2016 07:38:24

Morning reds,

4 games, 4 wins, 10 goals, 0 conceded. So far so good! Only blemish is the two penalty misses!

Where can I see the squad that travelled to America? Its not on the Liverpool website or reported in the echo?

yes I know its only pre season games but I have to say grujic looks impressive, on another topic that's 2 spot kicks we have missed now so who would ed001 and fellow posters like to be assigned our penalty taker for the coming season, i'm assuming that milner will be more a squad player this coming season, personally I would give the job to mane as I feel strikers should always want the chance to score in a 1 vs 1 situation, its obvious the little magician is not up to the task.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Henderson or Sturridge.}

21 Jul 2016 07:01:59
nice one ed001, out of those two I would pick Henderson, sturridge does not fill me with confidence he will score, I felt he was fortunate to score past de gea and I still remember that penalty vs everton that went into orbit! any more info regarding medel mate, reason I asked is like yourself I rate the player very highly indeed.

{Ed001's Note - I have not heard anything yet. With him being in Italy it is not my area, so I am trying to go through a friend who acts as an agent in South America to get info. Right now though, he is so busy trying to sort out some deals for players coming over to Europe that he has not got back to me, other than to say he will ask when he gets a moment.}

21 Jul 2016 07:04:53
I've just got a feeling that Grujic will be awesome at penalties but failing that - Sturridge or Can.

21 Jul 2016 08:13:28
Emre Can for me.

If Milner is on the pitch then him.

If not, Henderson.

Flanagan on loan seems a strange one to me eds. If ge does go do you think we have enough cover in the full back areas? Not much past Clyne and Moreno is there.

{Ed001's Note - Wisdom, Randall and youth teamers. We are well stocked for right backs.}
