we have Brendon on one side where 1 player leaves and he spends £100 m on players and on the other side we have Koeman who has £97m worth of players most of them to Brendon and Koemans team playing good attractive winning football and the other playing a load of garbabge. One player leaves ok one injured but should of kept team consistent waste of new players nope its Brendon whose not upto it.

Agree quiet a lot with your post. We are litreally casting doubts on every Liverpool Supporters outside, Without Suarez we are piss poor.

Agree9 Disagree3

West Ham started the game with 5 new players (Sakho, Valencia, Kouyate, Song, and Cresswell).

We started with 4 (Manquillo, Lovren, Moreno, and Balotelli).

Not a big fan of the 'time to gel' excuse.

Agree22 Disagree0

Boom I just find it so funny how a few weeks ago you said Man Utd where a mid table club and Liverpool was the dogs b***ocks

Diego

I still stand by it. You finished 7th last and would finish close to 7th this term.

Agree2 Disagree4

We will see

Agree2 Disagree1

One thing is sure Diego, if we had half the budget ManU have, we would have won a treble every year and bring world peace. Unfortunately we cannot ask our sponsor to buy us a top 4 place so we have to try and do it with players who are being paid less than the annual budget of an avarage European country for a week. So why don't you go bother some of your rich friends in the Man City and Chelsea and leave us alone?

Agree2 Disagree3

To be fair fanobip, BR has now spent well over £200M on players. It's not like we're surviving off of scraps.

Agree5 Disagree0

Have a look how much u have spent pal and then come up with a ridiculous statement

Agree2 Disagree1

Liverpool spent near 60 million under Rodgers and another 100 this year to go with the 40 or so last year you spend a lot but don't really have the backing united do because big sponsers don't sponser Liverpool its not as attractive

Agree0 Disagree1

21 Sep 2014 09:14:59
To be fair, van Gaal has stuck to his system and bought players for it. BR seems trying to be too clever and change every week in addition to buying players who will hardly play. At this rate Utd might finish ahead of us.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think everyone is missing the point here. Liverpool have spent plenty of money BUT we haven't been buying £50/£60m players have we? No. The reason for this is that we are trying to build a squad of young players who will eventually/hopefully be successful for many years to come. Man Utd on the other hand is now doing what Real Madrid do, and City and chelsea used to do; throw money at a handful of top players in the hope of getting immediate success. fact! We have spent £100m or so on players this summer but these are all young players with lots of potential. this was to not only add depth to the squad but also we are looking to the future. Remember, we had one of the smallest squads last season and only had the epl to play in. This season we are playing in 4 competitions so we needed to buy players. I've not seen enough to think that the right players have been bought but only time will tell. We could have spent all that money on two players but then where would we be?

Starting to wonder about BR again

Believable10 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - I fear this screwing around with the defence will, as I explained before, end in tears Chris. As you know, Kirikou has left the home of Sparky and moved in to Brendo's house when he left - maybe just jealousy.}

Our system, style of play and Gerrard at DM would even make Carra in his prime look bad.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2014 16:55:40
Why is Sakho dropped? I will admit I am nervous when he is on the ball but I do think the manager needs to stick to a centre back pairing and give them plenty of game time together.
On face value with Skertel being out injured till this week it would seem that the managers preferred CB's are Lovren and Skertel.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - He has only been filling in whilst Skrtel was injured.}

Sakho has gotten himself 'Brendaned' by the looks of it. If he is just a filler for Skrtel and Lovren, then i think we should move him on in the summer. We could get a decent fee for him, and we have Ilori coming back from loan and can play as RCB and LCB. Disappointed for Sakho though.

Agree2 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - I can do nothing but refer you to the events of August 25 as described by @WonderDogSparky on Twitter.}

Really disappointed to hear Sakho is not playing today. Yes he looks nervous on the ball but he can pass, he wins so many headers cleanly. Lovren was at fault for goal during the week, Lovren lost his battle with Senderos last week and Auguero scored after 22 seconds on Lovren. Lovren will come good, but Sakho should be first choice centre back.

Agree5 Disagree0

20 Sep 2014 17:51:38
Looks to be a great decision bringing Skrtle back then.

Agree3 Disagree0

Look at Sakho's header for their 3rd goal.
Dont understand this love in for the guy.

Agree2 Disagree2

Poor header admittedly but why three West Ham attackers running through and none of our midfield

Agree2 Disagree0

Because Gerrard isn't good enough to play DM but cannot be dropped.

Agree3 Disagree0

Our defence is exposed time and again because we are so weak in centre midfield. Villa, West Ham, Man City all exposed the fact that Gerrard is now a spent force. The game against Chelsea showed this too. Gerrard is a legend, that's a fact, but teams of old phased out players who's time was up and now he is looking like his time is up and as a result we look soft in midfield and we are getting dominated and being left exposed. I know BR thinks that Gerrard can be like Pirlo, but I would beg to differ, the italian game is slower and he is less exposed because of that and he is and has always been a player that never relied on pace unlike Gerrard, I think it's now time to phase Gerrard out in favour of Can. Love Gerrard to bits for all he has done but maybe it's time he wasn't first name on the team sheet.

Agree5 Disagree0

20 Sep 2014 16:52:00
So where will Lucas play and where will Gerrard play?
Surely Gerrard doesn't have the legs as an attacking midfielder? And surely Lucas has shown he is much better at DM than he is further forward

Believable2 Unbelievable0

20 Sep 2014 17:19:32
What's wrong with Gerrard legs if they r not working he shouldn't be on the field imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mcgoveb

He might wanna play two holding DM to stop WestHam play in the middle.
But don't they play direct from flanks?

Agree0 Disagree0

Just wondering what your thoughts are on The fact Rodgers tried his best to sell Borini this summer and brought in Lambert yet it's Borini being called upon while Sturridge is injured.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's also sitting Lallana in deference to Lucas, Sakho is on the bench, and Markovic. £60M worth of subs? Or just squad rotation?

Agree2 Disagree0

Sure there will be squad rotation throughout the season but when you tell a player he is better off moving because his opportunities will be very limited but then play him at first given opportunity ahead of the striker you brought in this summer

Agree2 Disagree0

20 Sep 2014 16:41:26
Rodgers has picked the exact squad I was hoping, I'm being optimistic and saying borini for a brace!

Believable1 Unbelievable9

I would have had Lallana on for Lucas, but in the past, the diamond leaves us vunerable at the back, so maybe Lucas can sure up the midfield with Gerrard. let's see how this XI fares!

Agree0 Disagree0

Pile,
Wouldn't removing Gerrard and replacing him with Lucas be a better bet to sure up the back thereby allowing us play a real attacking midfielder like Lallana further forward
This is West Ham we are playing not City or Barcelone, two DM's is ridiculous

Agree3 Disagree0

Annoyed Sakho has come off for Skrtel, Skrtel is far worse positionally and Sakho is actually fine in possession despite appearances.

Sakho-Lovren is the younger, long term partnership should stick to a back 4 and get them to gel. Its the one place on the field injuries permitting that shouldn't be rotated unless desperate.

Agree5 Disagree0

I agree Mcgoveb. West Ham themselves are playing 3 defensive midfielders!

Agree1 Disagree0

Meh I've been a bit of a blind fan when it comes to skrtel in by the fact I like him, and I was thinking lallana ether then Lucas at firt pile but I think easing lallana in to games might help him after the injury

Agree0 Disagree0

And that ladies and gentlemen is why I'm not a manager!;)

I am very happy that Borini has a start today.
It's ok to think he's not quite up to scratch. But I defy anybody to tell me he doesn't possess all the qualities that have turned Henderson into not only an integral part of the team but fan favourite and vice captain.
I see no reason he couldn't be a Dirk Kuyt for us, a big player for big games. His run in the Liverpool team was basically August-January in Rodgers first year, before his injury.
Anyway, he's got my full backing!

hi eds, how come coutinho isn't even on the bench? while he has been disappointing so far surely if fit he would make the bench.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - You might want to search for "it will all end in tears". I would think Coutinho is dropping down the pecking order a little, and Kirikou, as I have gone in to in some length before, will now be looking at where he will be fitting in over the coming months. It is not simply a case of using all available players during this few weeks of heavy fixtures.}

Rodgers/the committee/whoever really need to sort out our acquisition strategy. It's just bizarre.

Arsenal showing Villa up for the poor team they are

Believable4 Unbelievable0

20 Sep 2014 16:02:52
its not hard we haven't played well once so far this season we need to play 2 up top

Agree2 Disagree0

But Villa are at home and less likely to sit deep
As I've said previously, the Villa home game will be the standard pattern for most games at Anfield this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

They're simply doing what we should have done. Attack them and move the ball forward at pace rather than playing everything sideways and backwards. In my opinion we were worried about their counterattacking threat so played conservatively to prevent it, but that unfortunately leads to our attack being blunted as well. I don't think it's as much formation (one up top, two up top) as tactics.

Agree1 Disagree0

Everybody knows they're a different side at home.

Ozone regarding your last post.
If you hadn't refused to watch "the Italian" you might have noticed what he brought to the team against ludogorets.
Bringing him on changed the shape of the team and largely influenced the final result.
I'm not quite sure what you expect from him but he's a fairly decent squad option at the very least.
We used to slag players off for trying to force their way out of the club or going on strike, but now borini gets it for refusing to leave?
I would have sold him for that money and thought it was the best option for him as a player but he decided to stay and fight at a big club, so he gets my support, as does every other player who is willing to fight for his place.

Believable14 Unbelievable6

I agree Mikey. A aside, Borini starts today.

Agree6 Disagree2

What are you on about Mikey, he played from the start and scoring a goal will influence the final result and I see him as a main player rather than a decent squad option and when were we trying to move him on? We've only just signed him!

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2014 06:44:49
The results of yesterday's poll of the day was interesting. Mangers will always say they're only concerned with the next game but in reality, in most cases anyway, they do work on tactics several games in advance.

The main problem with this is unforeseen injuries to key members of the team which can obviously affect the plan, however it would be foolhardy to the extreme to not plan in advance against certain teams.

Good evening all,

I just wanted to add to the comments on our new fullbacks.

I like most if not all Liverpool fans at the moment are really impressed and have high hopes for both of these talented players. but aren't we in a bit of situation here?

One has openly said he wants to play for Real Madrid and the other one has an option of a return/Athletico don't HAVE to sell him and can reject bids situations going on with these players?

What do we do in the worst case scenarios?

If Alberto gets in interest from Madrid (lets say next season/the season after) its pretty much a given that he is going to want to go! Yes we would probably get a decent amount for his sale but who would replace him?

Just imagine he continues his form over the next season or 2! Adding a few goals, providing assists/crosses/being an outlet on the left hand side. Adding to that if he develops a strong defensive game (I was surprised/impressed with some of the tackles he made a few nights ago)

He's likely to have that lb spot to himself right? Barring injury's /suspensions. Who would we replace him with?

The whole Javier situation with Athletico really concerns me to be honest.

I just makes sense that if he carries on being as good as he has been, surely Athletico will want him back/block a permanent move to us!

I know its early in the season but I like to think ahead.

Just like our overloaded wage bill concerns me, but that is a different discussion.

Any opinions on my post above are welcome.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Manquillo's situation is a bit of a strange one, but if Real offer a lot of money in a few years time then it's because Moreno has been doing well. We likely sell and find the next Moreno (unless by then we're a legitimate consistent European threat ourselves, in which case perhaps he decides differently). Really not such a bad position to be in.

Agree8 Disagree0

I have had these concerns ever since both signed for LFC. Its a given Moreno wants to play for Real and I think he will get his wish if he keeps on improving. Manquillo on the other hand is most likely Juanfran's long term replacement at Atletico, Simeone will not give him up without a fight. The worst part is it would block the progress of Mclaughlin and Smith for the next couple of years and we could end up with none of the 4 full backs in say 2-3 seasons. Smith and Mclaughlin are clearly LFC fans and it is their dream to play for us, so I hope BR gives them enough opportunities to prove themselves.

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Sep 2014 04:17:33
It's up to us fans to change their make them fall in love with the club, they're both amazing.

Agree4 Disagree1

I think you should be more concerned about Sterling going next summer, especially if we don't play CL the season after. Unfortunately where we are now, if any of our young players attract interest from Real or Barcelona they are likely to go, and we cannot do anything about it other than hoping we will be able to replace them with the same quality. Arsenal was in the same position in recent years and lost some top players like that. The real problem in my opinion is that if we will not play in the CL and not get any trophies, some of our top players can be tempted also by MAnU, Chelsea, MAn City as with RVP, and this will be really annoying.

Agree0 Disagree2

20 Sep 2014 08:53:17
I suggest Moreno has only just arrived. Let's enjoy him while he is here. No player can be begrudged going to real or barca. Brad smith might be ready by that point

Agree1 Disagree0

Moreno may want to play for RM, but when the likes of Ronnie is fed up with the things that are going on there, who knows, they may not be the force they once were. IMO, they and Barca are not the measure of a players success if they want to play for them or play for either of those clubs now. Anyway, I believe LFC will surprise everyone this season by going all the way to the top. So this should help in players wanting to stay at the Club.

Agree1 Disagree0

Rather have good players that other clubs want than rubbish ones nobody wants

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You might want to rethink that - Real Madrid did not want Moreno.}

But i do agree that Real may not be the force it is right now if Ronaldo does leave. Time and again they have shown they cannot step up their game without him, he is their talisman and most players are attracted to playing with the likes of him to improve their own game. If LFC can catch up with Real in the next couple of years (provided Real lose Ronaldo), then i would be more confident of keeping our star players even if they come knocking.

I think there will be a few coronaries on this site in the coming months. a win and people are talking like we are invincible, and a loss and suddenly we are completely inept. I personally can't predict what will happen, as much depends on how the squad gel, injuries, reaching potentials, etc.

I said 3 months ago that I would be happy with top 4 and move beyond group stages in CL. Most on this site ridiculed me as having lack of faith in the team! I think the reality is that we added a lot of depth, but were never entirely sure how to move forward without Suarez. let's face it, everything he touched turned to gold (unless he spoke or bit) and we built everything around him. I am encouraged that the players look genuinely disappointed with their performance, and have shown signs of much more. Suarez was the best player ever to don a Liverpool kit (argue all you like, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, in Liverpool history was as effective statistically). I am not a Suarez fanatic, but while we were clearly not a one man team, the players had far more confidence in attack when he was on the pitch. I was worried this season could be a transitional one (in the sense that it could be one step back before taking two forward as the old cliche rolls. ).

Looking forward to saturday, as I am every time we step on the pitch. Don't see a win to be honest, but will be ecstatic if we get one. Suspect a draw is on the cards. Really hoping Stevie gets a day off, but on the bench and available if things don't work out. Either Lucas or Hendo could play that role, and I think BR should go back to two strikers up top (and yes, I am also crazy enough to suggest it should be Borini with Balotelli, not Lambert).

Cheers,

Coop

Eds, maybe Ed001 - was just re-reading some stuff about the stadium redevelopment on here. Why are we only set to increase somewhere around 13k capacity? Will leave us still a fair bit behind united and arsenal, and from what I've seen online looks like a lot of the clubs around us will be increasing to.

Is it just logistical reasons? Or they worried we won't fill it up? Or just a cash money situation?

Seems like a proper ball ache for 13k extra seats

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - logistics, the area's infrastructure will not allow for a bigger stadium capacity at the moment. The plan is to improve that over the next few years though, in concert with the council.}

20 Sep 2014 09:11:46
Cheers ed

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The initial increase will be circa 8.5k but critically this will include all of the hospitality additions. Eventually (after phase 2) it will reach 58k and some. But that will be some years off. Going over 60k will mean Liverpool FC contributing significantly to the infrastructure around the ground - including transportation. The amount of debt being taken on and the minimal additional income this will bring annually means it is necessary for the owners to look to commercial contributions through selling the naming rights etc..}

Noticed a few calls for Flanno to be tried at defensive centre mid, I don't think that will work. I've said it before, I love the lads attitude and determination but I don't think he is what we need as a full back or as dcm.
I don't think you see a full back "progress" to a centre mid very often, more so the other way round, you may get a player not quite good enough to play centre mid that excels at full back, I've seen this a number of times through watching junior and youth football.
Please don't think I'm slagging Flanno, I'm not I just don't think he is the best we can hope for or expect.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

BR could well use Flanno as cover for the CDM position, and imo he would not look out of place at all bcoz of his understanding of the game. But no way should he be a long term solution for CDM, we need to to spend big on a world class CDM to improve our midfield. Flanno I think will be an utility player for the club in the long term, like O'Shea for the mancs.

Agree1 Disagree1

What about Skertel or Lovern as a DMD (when the other plays CB)?

Agree0 Disagree2

20 Sep 2014 11:16:10
Or.

We could rely on the three senior players who we have who can play already play DM instead of trying to convert defenders? I know, I must be insane, right?

I know I said that I don't think Gerrard can play there all the time both on account his style of play not suiting some games (& his age is a factor too), but Lucas and Can should be enough back up / alternative options.
