From what I can gather these are currently the main concerns of the fans.
1) Team playing too defensive.
2) Centre back pairing
3) Left back situation
4) Cover for Coutinho
5) Aspas

Below is my opinion on how to rectify these concerns.

1) To create a more attack minded team it may be better to play a 4-1-2-3 formation against Southampton.
Lucas would play in the holding midfield position allowing Gerrard and Henderson to operate further up the pitch. Gerrard seems to prefer playing deeper this season but I think we would all agree he is the best midfielder we have in terms of getting the ball forward and setting up the attacking players. Therefore, he needs to play a more attacking role. Henderson is the younger of the 2 and has the the legs to do most of the tracking back to allow Gerrard to maintain his forward position and conserve some of his energy. He can also get forward and join in with each attack. Our midfield is where we need to start controlling games and I feel this system would have a good effect.

2) The centre back duo which I would prefer is Toure and Agger. They have been our most impressive partnership so far this season. Toure uses his leadership skills excellently to organises the defence and he is a tank of a defender. For me he is vital to our chances of success this season. Meanwhile Skrtel looks like a man with a point to prove and could become a regular starter once again should he continue to impress when called upon. However, it has to be Toure and Agger for me this weekend.

3) The right back situation is easy. Having watched Kelly for the U21's earlier this week it is clear that he is ready for the step back up to the first team as he is currently the second best right back at the club (behind Johnson). I totally agree with Rodgers that a loan move would suit Wisdom in order for him to develop further as I feel he isn't quite ready yet. Also, I read several posts stating that Toure should play right back but I completely disagree. At his age he does not have the legs to be bombing up and down the flanks and chasing after wingers. For me Kelly should be the one to start this weekend.

4) As I have said in the first paragraph, I would move Henderson into the midfield alongside Gerrard in the absence of coutinho. Either Aspas or Sterling could play on the right wing instead of him.

5) I know many of you have not been impressed with Aspas as yet this season, but there is so much he does off the ball which dictates the flow in which the opposition play. He is very energetic and puts pressure on the opposition's defence allowing them very little time to think and get the game flowing. When our forwards play like this we force the opposition to make mistakes. We don't allow them to play the ball out. I would like to see more of this against southampton as it was missing from the Swansea game.

Having taken all this into consideration this would be my team to play against Southampton.

Mignolet
Kelly, Toure, Agger, Enrique
Lucas
Gerrard, Henderson
Aspas Sturridge, Moses

I specifically liked your opinion on aspas, good to know someone's sticking out for him

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post, I think that we will see the best out of Aspas if he is allowed to play as a box striker. The problem is that We have to world class players who want to play there ahead of him. Hoping he works out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Completely agree with every aspect
Nice

Agree0 Disagree0

Pretty good post mate and I agree with most of what you say. Hope you are right about Gerrard being pushed further as whilst Hendo is improving I don't think he has Stevie's passing range (not many do). Wisdom clearly is not a right back so Kelly to start. Aspas to start ahead of Sterling as with Sturridge and Moses playing we need someone more tactically aware than Sterling.

Read a stat today that we have conceded the second most shots on target this season which is a bit scary so reckon tomorrow will be very tight.

Agree0 Disagree0

For me, the outstanding thing about Aspas is his movement. Causes endless problems for the opposition. Fortunately, the coaching staff are not as ignorant as some supporters and are well aware of his qualities. Everyone else will have to wait until he scores a few goals before they get on the Iago train.

Interesting that the only two unbeaten teams in the PL are on merseyside!

I really hope Martin Kelly starts at RB vs. Southhampton. Nothing wrong with Wisdom, but he's not as good going forward, and is really built to be a center back. If not him, then Martin Skrtel, who did a decent job in that position in the past when called upon. I really think it will be Toure and Sakho in the center of defence, unless Agger is back then it will be Toure/Agger.

Also hoping Luis Alberto gets the nod in place of Coutinho. Might be a little early for him, but I would prefer him to Sterling, who is simply too easy to knock off the ball and doesn't look interested in defence.

Prediction: Liverpool 1 Southampton 1.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Raheem, not interested in defence?! What then does he get yelloe cards for

Agree0 Disagree0

Well, occasionally he gots caught under someone's legs, and draws a yellow. Entirely unintentional

Agree0 Disagree0

I watched a compiled clip of Alberto's pressing off the ball-

He is streets ahead in terms of his tactical awareness in regards to how Rodgers likes his players to press- Suarez is the only one who is on the same level.

He did get a year of intensive training in the finer arts of pressing at Barca B I suppose.

Agree0 Disagree0

Love to see the city doing well. I don't mind if Everton come 2nd in the prem evrey year. as long as we're 1st.

is it just me, or is aspas playing rather poor? maybe a swing and a miss be rodgers by there, but still he adds depth to the squad which is good I suppose! YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He has one more chance created and an assist more than Coutinho in 70 minutes less league time.

Guess it depends on how you define poor.

Agree0 Disagree0

In that case, get in a load of league 2 players nice and cheap to add more depth of players who are "poor"

Agree0 Disagree0

He's only played 4 league games, judge him (and the rest of the team) next May.

Agree0 Disagree0

Stats are great, except if you watch the game Aspas looks like a 10 year old girl playing against men. He needs time to build up his strength, I wouldn't start him tomorrow.

Agree0 Disagree0

I could care less what he looks like on the field. Creating chances, getting assists, scoring goals, completing passes- these are the sorts of things that matter to me, not how big he is or isn't. I suppose we could buy Huth and play him as a winger if that would be more to your liking?

He's played a grand total of 236 minutes for us in the league- can we at least let him get near 900 or so before we write him off?

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said RDL!
Some fans will never learn and always need someone to complain about.

Agree0 Disagree0

If I remember correctly, he played RW in the first game and really created lots of chances. In the subsequent games he has been played behind Sturridge where he is not as effective

Agree0 Disagree0

Get a clue fella. There's more to playing up top than goalscoring.

Eds fellow reds, just want to say congratulation to young sterling after court case collapse, hopefully now put it all behind you and get back to the form you had last season .

Hi Eds, Great work as always and love the site - glad to see its calmed down a bit after the mad transfer window!

Any news on how Yesil is progressing from his injury and when we can expect him back? Hoping he gets some minutes later in the season

Cheers {Ed019's Note - He's still recuperating and hopefully he'll be back soon. The club don't want to rush anybody in action to try and avoid long term issues}

I'm not suggesting this is our best pairing but if we want to play Sakho then Toure would be the best partner for him I would think. At least until he's got used to the prem

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think pairing Sakho with a more vocal and experienced counterpart would help transition him. Toure or Agger fits that mold. I don't know if Skrtel has the communication ideally at the back, but he's proven in the league. Sakho seemed to be a bit out of position and honestly that is somewhat natural with him being new to our defensive system. I felt like a bit more communication and instruction back there could have limited him jumping out and making unnecessary tackles. Looking forward to see if Agger's fit tomorrow and how that plays into the back line up.

Agree0 Disagree0

As I said the other day. I think that Toure snd Sakho will be the pairing in the not too distant future. I just can't see Liverpool paying Toure's wages or Sakho's fee to warm the bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

I still think that for now the best pairing is Agger and Toure. I think agger is still out?
Now Skrtel has been in good form recently, should be worthy of a start? Sakho arrived for big money, is young and needs playing time.
He was also descried as a beast in training but looked a little rusty the other night. End of the day this time last year we would never have thought to be talking about this type of problem at the back.

Agree0 Disagree0

Does anyone else think that Agger might be moved position? Either Rodgers wants to start playing 3 at the back or Agger could be moved into a deep midfield role or left-back. He's just been appointed vice-captain so surely you have to assume that he'll be playing too. Either way, we finally have quality and depth at the back!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sakho is rusty. He hadn't played since may.

Hi Ed02, I found the reply you gave a while ago about the big teams breaking away and forming a two tier European league very interesting. In it you gave a possible time scale of 10 to 15 years.
With this in mind I was wondering if you see the current situation with the Quatar world cup 2022 possibly moving to the winter, providing them with an opportunity to implement this? {Ed002's Note - This was discussed in the recent meeting as was the possibility of a transition to a summer based league, which is sort of related. At this time I understand that such matters would be seen to be a distraction to their long-term goals.}

With firstrowsports being gone. do any fellow reds know of any other good streaming sites?

P.S Good Luck to the Lads tomorrow. believe {Ed002's Note - www.firstrowsports.bz}

Coolsportz is reliable.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Daveyliver, have always used coolsportz and had 0 problems. If I am looking for a game to stream I generally just type (for example) 'Liverpool vs southampton live stream' and look for the ronaldo7 website in the google search results. ronaldo7 generally has 20+ links to the game from different channels with different commentators etc

Agree0 Disagree0

Footballstreaming.info is the one I have used for a few seasons. it shows many available links for all games. Links to coolsports, digisport, dolcesport etc. Also has Sopcast stream links which give far superior quality and less chance of streams dying. Same with SportsLemon too.

What did you guys think about Sakho in the previous match? He's got good tackles but felt he need to position himself a bit better. But nothing he can't improve and would only get better with games.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I thought he was impressive. Did make mistakes but doubt we planned to play him straight away particularly with skertel. His ability is there for all to see

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought he was pretty poor actually.

The 1st goal was a poor header, these things happen.

The 2nd was pretty shocking IMO, Stepping out for a ball he had no chance of winning, leaving a big hole for Shelvey to run into. He did this a number of times.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was powerful in the air and his distribution was good, obviously it was his first game but he did look immense at times. The last ditch tackle on Michu at the end of the game saved us a point for me. He's a beast, imagine if we acquired Papa to play alongside him. They would make a formidable partnership at the heart of our defence IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair after playing just 1 game in the premiership, a league he has not played against a very good attacking side with players he probably knows little about I think he did well.

I am confident he will be an excellent signing but think he may need 15-20 games to really start understanding the movement and pace of this league

Agree0 Disagree0

Poor IMO. He has however, all the attributes required for a top CB an will turn out to be one.

First thing he needs to do, stop diving into every challenge!

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 13:18:16
He was very rash on 2 or 3 occasions, and was poor positionally. However in the air, in the tackle, and distribution wise, he was very strong. He gave away possession in a silly area towards the end of the game, but made up for it with a phenominal tackle on Michu just moments later to reclaim possession. I think the lack of communication hurt him. He got no help from Skrtel, didn't seem to know where to be or which runners to track and clearly didn't hear anybody call man on in the previously mentioned loss of possession. I think he needs to carry on training with the side, maybe make the odd substitute appearance against lesser teams, and go away and learn the language. Once he has that nailed down, he will walk into the starting line-up. He just looked a bit eager to impress and I'm sure next time we see him, he'll be far more calm and disciplined than the Sakho that played against Swansea. He showed enough in the game for me to believe he will be a top signing. Also take into consideration his lack of game time recently. He was bound to be rusty.

YNWAdam

Agree0 Disagree0

As always adam, your analysis is spot on once again.I really like skrtel but he seems to only have an understanding with agger
For me sakho and toure would be immense together

Agree0 Disagree0

Sakho seemed very eager to impress on his debut, his tackles came across as very extravagant and he got sucked into his man too quickly on a couple of occasions, however what he did to correctly he did well. Some of his passing was awesome and his speed and strength are major bonuses.

He will be considered one of the leagues best CB's once he is used to the league IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 07:54:55
Ed's Any thoughts on this?

We really did not need to spend big on left footed center half, the problem was the right side. Just some one cover Agger would have been enough. But we went out and spent £16-£18M on Sakho as our Marquee signing.

With Barca's low ball bid in pre-season of Agger, were these bids just to tempt the water to see if A) the player was interested and B) Liverpool were interested in selling him.

Do you think it is possible that Agger will move to Barca in Jan transfer window and Liverpool have gone into the market very early to get a player and let him settle into the team knowing full well that Agger is going.

It works well for both clubs and Agger (who obviously loves the club but if Barca come calling it must be difficult). Barca have time to raise the cash for an acceptable bid and Liverpool have a ready made replacement. {Ed002's Note - This has been done to death over the summer, but Barcelona are still looking for a centre back and Agger is a player that interests them.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed 2:

Do you think a deal has already been done? {Ed002's Note - No.}

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 10:38:06
if agger dose make his way to barca in jan I would love to have alex song as part of the deal he has said he would like a move in jan, song and lucas could free up gerrard in midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

Aces_up1504: So you are saying that we can't play two left-footed CBs at the same time? What about two right-footed CBs? Is that OK? Plenty of world class CB pairings are actually both right-footed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Flexibility people. Agger can play as a left back, left mid and can also play as a more attack-minded DM. Sakho can also play left back and as a more defence-minded DM. It also gives the flexibility to field three quality CDs in 3-5-2, 5-3-2, 5-2-3 formations. It's not about startiing 11, it's about selecting a match squad to exploit you opposition whilst also covering for injury, suspension and dips in form.

Agree0 Disagree0

RED LENIN

I am pretty sure Agger cannot play Left Mid! Also, at 29, I don't think it's a wise idea to change his position on the pitch, certainly not to areas like LM and DM where lot more energy is required and considering Agger is injury pron, it would be a terrible decision.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would try to accomodate all four skrtel sakho agger toure somehow.
I would play one of them as DM. let gerrard operate further forward in coutinho's role. or on the right of the top 3
one of them can take the right back slot while johnson is injured
would be a much more physical team through the spine

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sure I saw Agger actually come out and say that he would play out his career at Anfield, as long as he was wanted, even if Barca came knocking. He loves the place.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 18:00:21
Edmundo is correct, Agger will stay as long as we want him. Everyone bitching about too many centre halfs. Think about the idea of playing 3 CBs with Johnson and Cissokho againdt some of the more difficult away games?
Martinez and Rodgers style of play are similar and it is a tactic Martinez has used fairly well. Then 2 left footed centre backs doesn't seem an issue as there would be a right foot there with Toure and then maybe Agger or Skrtel.
This would work so well with Gerrard in CM with Lucas. Then Toure would push into CM with Gerrard pushing up on the counter, I think Rodgers has set up superbly for this with an athletic CB in Sakho.
Anyone else agree?

Agree0 Disagree0

The Real AG - Agger can play left mid as a last resort and has actually had to do so a handful of times. He was OK actually - not earth shattering but competent.

Agree0 Disagree0

The real AG - but I must add I don't think he's ever started as a left mid. Just ended up as one during the game.

I am sure Suarez will destroy defence when he will return like when a lion is freed after a long time in a cage. We love him or hate him but I am sure each and every true Liverpool fan is desperate to see him in action. Even if we are at the top of the table, we have really missed him because he is so special. I think all the match we won by 1 - 0 could have been 3-0 or 4-0 with his presence. However, I believe he should skip the match against the mancs and start the next EPL match against Sunderland instead. Any views!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I didn't mis him at all. I still believe he makes our team as a unit worse

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't say worse lionred, I think its more a case that he changes the teams style of play as people want to pass to him. He creates his own chances and yes the team play suffers a little, but he puts the chances away.

Teams struggle to deal with sturridge as it is, with both of them up front it will be a defenders nightmare if he manages to play a season without ascting like a misbehaved child.

Agree0 Disagree0

BR has to ensure we don't revert back to Luis Suarez FC, in other words pass every ball to Luis and let him go for goal. We have to ensure the balance remains positive for the group, like BR said, we are no longer about individuals and long may that remain.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 12:01:46
Yeah he creates his own chances and scores spectacular goals, but scoring the simple goals seems to evade him at times. and going for the spectacular when another player is in a better position than him happens a lot as well, good player no doubt, but his attitude stinks

Agree0 Disagree0

As long as the lion has been well fed whilst kept in the cage he should be ok. ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

Hmm, after rubbing the club and supporters noses in dogs dirt! some people still hero worship him! spose its a case of personal pride and integrity

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Sep 2013 00:36:42
I think playing suarez will backfire on us, at the moment we are top of the league albeit by 1 point and we have had a good team ethic, suarez is a magician, unplayable at times but we always seem unbalanced when he plays as he wants the ball all the time and does not give when others are in better positions, also will his desire still be there, I believe Liverpool have a dilemma do we play him and disrupt the team flow but see him shine so we can get a great price for him in January or in the summer or do we not play him, keep the team flow but don't get the money or as much interest, hard one I hope br gets it right as I was at anfield in 1990 and watching hansen lift the trophy was a special moment sadly it was our last although we were very close and I would love it again-

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No offense Bootroom, but this is crazy talk. Love him or hate him, he can only make the team better.

Agree0 Disagree0

Stick him on the wing and tell him to get back and help his fullback out - Sturridge is a better striker anyhow

Agree0 Disagree0

I am pretty sure that a player who we turned down 40million pound for is a sure starter if fit. He will walk straight into the team. The more relevant question is will Suarez be played central, wide or floating with Sturridge?

Agree0 Disagree0

Any more negatives you want to makee up, we are the top of the league and let's hope we stay there, suarez scored 2 goals for his country the other week so I don't know where you get all this doom and gloom about a world class player who is in the top 3 players in the world, ihe did carry us last season, it seems that some of his own fans have got the knives out already and he has not even played for us yet, and if you notice sturridge he is greedy aswell and takes shots from stupid angles when other players are in the better postsions have a look at the swansea game it will show you

Agree0 Disagree0

How come you want to be Champion and lift the trophy and at the same time you want your best player to be sold in January. We may be at the top of the table but offensively we have suffered a lot during his absence and we will never be champion without a player of his calibre.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well Coutinho is out for 6 weeks, so I do not think we will see much difference in formation or players. Suarez will play just behind Sturridge for the time being.

Would like to see Gerrard playing in the advanced position next game and Allen coming into CM.

Agree0 Disagree0

As of now with Coutinho out, I would like to see him played behind Sturridge. Move him out wide when Coutinho is back and play Moses on the other side.

Agree0 Disagree0

I also find the guy annoying and was truly wanting rid of him if we could have sealed ourselves a great alternative player.

But, we didn't and he is here. For me I also have said many times for all his magic he can certainly ruin teamplay. that being said I still think he is a better striker than Sturridge by some distance

Agree0 Disagree0

Mickey b- Sturridge has 4 league goals from 11 shots, 7 of which were on target. Those are impressive statistics no matter how you look at it. Sturridge has been historically far less wasteful than Suarez.

Agree0 Disagree0

In the example Rodgers once gave of how divides the pitch up he has 2 players behind his perfect type of striker (the description he gave 3 yrs ago perfectly describes Sturridge) and the type of players he likes in behind are either quick and clever or technical so Suarez fits here. Ideally Rodgers would have an advanced goal scoring midfielder in there (Sigurdsson at Swansea and Mkhitaryan being a target makes the point). Lucas & Gerrard don't appear ideal fits as a pair for his 2 ideal deeper lying midfielders. I would expect us to look for a more mobile DLM than Lucas with a greater range of passing in the next year or so. Gerrards replacement also being sought with time to bed them in.
