i love Liverpool fc. i'm the happiest man when we win and i'm a nightmare when we lose I live and breathe lfc, it really is my life. I have friends who support other clubs (one is a die hard tottenham fan and the other is a die hard southampton fan) and they both try and tell me that we are a spent force, a club living in the past. it gets to me and makes me angry. every Liverpool fan expects to win every game no matter who we play. our fanbase. our kop is always worth points, we have made good signings. maybe there not the marquee signings everyone wants but they are all good players.

mignolet really is one of the best young keepers in europe. his shot stopping is really up there with the best.

toure is a great defender. part of the invincables, part of the man city league winning team, experience, character, class.

aspas is a really tricky player, dirk kuyt and craig bellamy in one, good skills, great touch, good finisher, he will work for us, he will work hard. he has his best years ahead, no matter what happens he won't be found wantinf for effort

luis alberto. silky player, tall, average pace, but clinical, barcelona did want him, they really did, but they have too many players in his posistion. scored double figures and created double figures in a second tier league I would consider as good as our championship (compare those stats to zaha)

there are a few recent names were linked with, we will get a couple more in don't doubt that, whoever they are and whatever they cost we will have a gtter squad than last year. wether its enough to compete I don't know, other fans of other teams are guna be just like me trying to explain signings etc. I am not guna guess where we finish, I won't guess how this year plans out.

What I will say. as a man whos daily life revolves around Liverpools fc is that we are ready, brendan is ready, he's up for this you can tell. gerrard, agger, lucas, coutihno, sturridge, kelly, toure, mignolet, aspas, borini, sterling, ibe, . every single one of these players shows desire, shows passion.

Liverpool fc is not a your usual football, were different, our fans are different, our stadium is different, our scouse heritage is different,

we won't crumble, we won't fall. we've been out the champions league for a few years. SO WHAT? we'll stay here. we will thrive again, we will win the league again, we are the champions. maybe man u have overtaken our league record, let's see them beat our european record, fa cup record, league cup record. naaaa we are the team, we are LFC

we will never be beaten

I think I know what Rodgers meant when he said right mentality now! Imagine playing against Suarez Aspas Costa and Papa in the same team. They will kick lumps out of each other on the training ground! They all have the mad streak that creates a winner. There needs to be one in every team. Bayern is full of winners! Barca are a different team when Puyol was injury free. Chelsea's glory days with Jose was built on these sort of players!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The best team Fregie ever put together at utd was full of people determined to win. everybody that criticises Costa and Suarez would have taken Cantona on there team in a heartbeat .

Agree0 Disagree0

Tis right we need a bit of steel.

Alfie

Agree0 Disagree0

I remember the Arsenal team with Petit etc. seemed to be full of players built like Usain Bolt and just as powerful and quick.

Agree0 Disagree0

And Mignolet is really confident and Toure has a will to win. And Coutinho wants to turn it on every game. And Allen and Hendo will always give 100%. It's not about being mad and a bit of a head the ball its about a team of contrasting skills and abilities who play as a unit and all refuse to be beaten in their own way.

I am an ex season ticket holder at Anfield, who had to a long time ago, give it due to job commitments abroad. My wife who is Spanish is a Real Madrid Supporter and so are the rest of her family. I hate the Bernabeu, as it is nearly as quiet as the Emirates and therefore have a season ticket to Atletico Madrid. I also like to go to the Ground of Rayo Vallecano (which is has only 3 sides) and the fans are the anarchists of Madrid. Last season they cut the power lines to the floodlights because they did not want to pay the high prices being charged to watch Rayo versus Real.

Anyway, I have watched Diego Costa playing for both Atketico and Rayo and this boy is good, in fact he is sensational. He is as quick a player as I have seen and he has the ability to go with it.

Yes, he can be a little dirty, sly kicks, leaving his foot in after the ball has gone but boy can he play.

He is the reason that Atletico made the Champions league in the second half of the season not Falcao. This guy was tremendous. He played on either flank or through the middle and he also made a lot of assists for Falcao. he winds up defenders so much they focus on him and lose their concentration.

If we keep Suarez, a front four of Sturridge or Aspas as the focus with costa on the left, Suarez on the right and coutinho behind would be formidable.

And for all those people complaining he is dirty. Just remember we had Souness and Case playing for us at one timeor the other and they were not particularly clean.

At 25 million euros he is a bargain. ( weird that every transfer is 25 million this season)

Orrin

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Wouldn't want another troubled clown.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nice one Orrin lad.

I haven't seen him play, but that analysis seems pretty honest and I'll take your word on that.

DaveyBootle

Agree0 Disagree0

I have seen Costa play, scored a few alright goals, nothing special technically and considering his size, regularly bullied by defenders and rolls around like a cry baby, when challenged. An absolute embarrassment.
Where does his reputation come from? Animal, thug and other adjectives, suggesting hard man. Please tell me it's rubbish EDs please.

JDP

Agree0 Disagree0

If you're right Orrin, we'll have a pretty formidable range of attacking options!!
Sturridge, Costa, Suarez, Aspas, Ibe, Sterling, Borini, Yesil, Downing, Coutinho, Assaidi and the rising stars waiting in the wings.
Assuming Brendan has sat down and thought about this wealth of talent, I'd imagine we might see a couple of outs (transfer/loans). !?

If costa bid true, anyway feel suarez may be going? Arsenal haven't commented and we seem to have a few strikers now for a team that plays one up front? {Ed019's Note - Suarez could still go but the proposed Costa transfer makes no difference to whether Suarez is staying or not}

we all wanted big marquee signings now maybe costa isn't what u want but he is a marquee signing and a coup for us in our current state u have to remember he's with a team in champions league and probably a better team than us its a marquee signing wether its not what u want eg eriksen. u want a big money signing this is what u wish for. 21m u wanted to see this big money. what u have to say would downing henderson get a game with at madrid so take money away he's an improvement

Any interest in Ayew eds? Or just recycled rumours. {Ed019's Note - There is a very good chance Andre Ayew will leave Marseille this summer - and the club have already accepted this. They lined up a replacement, although as no one made an offer for Ayew the planned replacement has since moved on. Inter Milan, Arsenal and Dynamo Kyiv have already declared an interest in the player who might just attract the attention of AC Milan as well. Marseille has already lined up his replacement but no one has put an offer on the table just yet. As of August 1, Liverpool has not spoken with Marseille about the player. Should they wish to, there will be a representative of the club arriving in England tomorrow.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Cheers ed!

01 Aug 2013 22:40:36
So all the papers including the Echo and Guardian AND the BBC are reporting that we've bid 21m for Costa - but his club have apparently denied getting a bid :S As the eds say they don't think there's been a bid I'm taking their side on this one so wouldn't get too excited just yet (or too worried, depending on your opinion of him!), but I think he'd be a good signing if it does turn out to be true, would provide goals and options playing up front, out wide or behind the striker

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Highly unlikely that this isn't true given that ALL of the main stream media outlets have confirmed the bid and AS are the only ones contradicting it. Really hope it happens as we defo need competition up front.

Agree0 Disagree0

Once a story's on the BBC all the main outlets tend to report it, I imagine most of the reports are just copying the first few - the Guardian are claiming that Atletico have denied the deal themselves but it does look like they might just be reporting the AS denial story

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 22:40:21
Almost as soon as the likes of the BBC and Guardian claimed Liverpool have made a 25 million euro bid for Diego Costa, Atletico Madrid have denied receiving any offer through Madrid-based paper AS.Atletico Madrid say they have not received an offer from Liverpool, or any other club, for the combative Brazilian striker.

Also a work permit wouldn't be an issue for Costa as he has a spanish passport

01 Aug 2013 22:30:57
Hey eds just wondering, on a personal opinion I see coutiniho getting better and better. So is there anything in his contract that could see him move off for a cut price? I'm asking as contract clauses seem to be getting more definitive in transfers

Thanks for the time

Can you please tell me what type of player Diego costa is like and would he be a good combination with struuige {Ed019's Note - I made a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCXIIfpjTK4 I wouldn't judge him on that alone, but he seems a pretty decent dribbler and knows where the goal is and where his team-mates are for a possible assist. However he is a diver and a fiery character who has previously punched Pepe and Thrown spit at Sergio ramos so his discipline is something to look out for. Hopefully he can stay out of trouble and the press if he does indeed join Liverpool}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Can you blame him?

Pepe is a nasty piece of work and Ramos is ruthless.

Agree0 Disagree0

He also gets his fair share of nasty tackles on him, plus spit, remember the spainish kicked maradona off the park. He just stands his ground ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Well if Luis is leaving we need an animal to replace him:-)

01 Aug 2013 22:28:36
Diego Costa was granted dual nationality on July 6th 2013 and no longer requires work permit - interesting one - we'd be a horrible team to play with him and jaws if he stays - no word yet from usual suspects in Spain hunter, balague, or Sid Lowe and BBCs Ben smith isn't that reliable on domestic matters but you never know!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Aug 2013 22:27:50
For what it's worth Athletico have denied receiving bid

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I seem to recall them denying our bidding on Torres as well, though. Not quite sure why clubs do that to be honest.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 22:25:40
so the diego costa bashing starts already and we don't even know if we've actually made a bid let alone if he's going to sign. 20 goals and 8 assists in 36 starts last year all while playing second fiddle to the 3rd best player in la liga (falcao) and yet the doom mongers and nay sayers are out in force already. Oh and for all his "bad attitude" he got 1 red card last season and that was in the europa league. Don't seem like bad stats to me

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It's because their FM stat's have not updated yet.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 22:18:54
I think that if indeed we purchase this Costa guy, we will be buying another Suarez. Suarez as in behavior, aggression, and potential to be world class. However, I hope we can get these 2 playing on the same team, as they don't give up easily, and will give us some fight at the back end of matches. Will be very happy if we pull this off, and Suarez stays.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Aug 2013 21:51:31
Many reliable sources such as James Pearce (ECHO) and Ben Smith (BBC) claiming we've bid £21mill for Diego Costa, do you see any truth in this EDs? {Ed019's Note - Yes}

Why are we spending so much one a second choice striker when we could get eriksen and Toby who both want to come to anfield?any la liga expert please tell me he is a messi lite

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well aside from Toby and Eriksen not being good enough for Liverpool or having the right attitude and not playing the same position of Costa.

And that's not even mentioning that we aren't interested.

But that aside and that Eriksens attitude sucks we might just try to waste our money on them.

20 goals, 8 assists and a massive work rate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Eriksen is good enough for Liverpool, it's a case of do we really need another player like him at this moment in time? Probably not with the options we have in the CAM role! Personally I'd love for us to buy him

Looks like the reports on Papadopulos were not true. Would have liked this one to have happened think he's the type of centre half we need alongside Agger.

Would be no doubt on lower wages than Skrtle and we could regain some of the transfer fee through his sale. It must surely be down the injury concern and possibly the fee.

Hearing various rumours on this that it could be we have asked for a loan with option to buy deal and various others.

If it is the injury would we not find this out in inevitable medical and judge for ourselves?

Also would anyone consider selling Johnson for say 12 million and bringing in Alderweireld for 7 million? Alderweireld can play right back and would be better defensively than Johnson.
He would also no doubt be on lower wages also. These two factors alone work in our favour.

Question is would we have any takers? Considering the enquiries we've had on various players in our squad this year, has anyone bid for him or even enquired about him? Could be an outside chance Rafa might make an offer, and I think Johnson would be interested.

I wouldn't mind if he stays, but you can clearly see we are offloading a majority of high earners for younger players with lower wages.

Replacing Johnson with Alderweireld and Skrtle with Papadopulos decreases the wages considerably and must be something they would be considering.

I have to say also I'm surprised we are not looking to replace Downing with Eriksen. Eriksen is reasonably priced and would be roughly on the same wages, but Eriksen would be the player with more sell on value and ability.

He has age, ability, scoring ability and a higher sell on fee. He could easily play on the left and would have more impact than Downing surely this ones another must for me.

They will move for him if they can offload skrtel

Ok here goes. I have never seen diego costa play and I hadnt even heard of him before today but I want him to sign after reading one report on the bleacher report. He sounds like an evil genius. When I first started reading I thought right its bull, there is no way rodgers wants this guy but the more I read on I began to see the method in the madness. He has no soul. My kinda guy. Also there is quotes from a couple of defenders and a couple of managers in la liga who say he is better than falcao. Bold claim. They made it, not me.
Not sure if i'm allowed to post the link on here. Let me know and I will.

Can anyone see us selling Johnson, and bringing in Alderweireld for 7 million to play right back?

We could probably get 12 for Johnson, we're as Alderweireld would be only 7 and on less wages. He can play right back but whether he would be willing to change position in a world cup year I don't know.

In all honesty if we bring in Papadopulos, Eriksen and Costa, and also sell Downing, Skrtle, Assiaidi, and Coates I'd be content.

Jonesred

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think you would struggle to get 12M for Johnson and I'm also struggling to think of who would want him.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 22:49:17
Not a bad shout. He plays right back for Belgium anyway so it'd actually increase his WC chances. He won't play CB ahead of Vertonghen, Kompany or Vermaelen. he's a good defender, but not tough enough for the centre. His ability on the ball suit him to a right back role though. Food for thought!

YNWAdam

Agree0 Disagree0

Unless I'm missing something RB is the position we a best served in. Johnson and Kelly are England internationals. Wisdom is an U21 international and McLaughlin is highly rated. You can't sell Johnson as there are no takers at 12m and 100k a week (highest paid RB in Prem). So best we allow his contract to run down knowing worse case scenario is that we have a ready made (free) replacement in our ranks. Johnno does make mistake but he's also one of the best in his position in the PL.

Just read what Ian Ayre had to say about Suarez isn't for sale and is sure he will be playing for Liverpool next season, well I have to say that you will look like a fool if we sell Suarez now! It will just be another screw up by Ian Ayre in a long line of screw ups

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What else can he realistically say other than suarez is for sale? It's not like suarez has a buy-out clause where he could then say suarez would only be sold if the buy-out clause is met and the club no longer have a choice.

source of reports on Costa are the BBC and the Echo. If we thought Luis was getting bad press, this fella is going to be reporters dream, he's part animal. They call him the panther of brazil, and based on some you tube clips, he acts like one

Oh dear, what is BR thinking?

Tel 1949 {Ed002's Note - Sorry but they will be carrying a story from elsewhere Tel.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

mayhem 1981

Agree0 Disagree0

Guys, I didn't say he wouldn't be good for the team, I said from the, you tube clips he looks part animal and will be a reporters dream. he's a fighter and he can't help it just like Luis. he's a winner, of that there's no issue, but like all winners he has a dark side ( unlike dear old tel ).

I don't know what BR is thinking, is he putting together a team of winners who only know one way. win at all costs ( like Luis )? We have to assume they have done their homework on this guy if the rumours are true. If he joins us I will welcome him with open arms, after all, we love a fighter at LFC don't we?

Weve had a few down the years who have put that tough spine through the team, but in recent times the players all appear a little more gentlemanly and refined. aka Downing/Johnson etc. Toure is a beast and a proven winner and along with Stevie, Luis and our panther if he arrives we may just have the mix that could cause a few shock waves.

i spotted a phrase by one of the more respected journos earlier that said the only way to describe Costa was that he was a bigger nuisance than Suarez!

If you join, then welcome Diego. let battle commence in the premiership!

At 6 foot 2, brazilian and strong as an Ox, he could just be the missing link, albeit a highly sprung link!

Have we bid for Costa? but what about Erikson for AM, it's clear both he and Toby want to come to Liverpool should we not be bidding for these two, we could regret not acquiring both at this time with both looking to move, young, hungry, in FSG policy. should we bid?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have you actually seen either player for anything more than a highlights package??

Erickson is just not right for us, he is not and unfortunately never will be. His physique reminds me of Charlie Adam. He's just not a natural athlete and as such can't or won't track back enough. He would be a disaster and teams like City, Spurs, even Swansea would show him up. Italy would be the best destination but his career would be ruined coming to a fast moving pressing team in such a quick league.

Alderweilder is not coming either as he's no better than Coates, hell he's no better than Wilson who just got released.

Facing Suarez, Costa and Aspas would scare the feck out of anyone. Might be a useful tactic.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hopefully add papa to that list too.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just hope Costa doesn't snub us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kinda hope he does to be honest. Not really in a position to be picky, but I much preferred the Konopylanka rumor to this one. Guys a wind-up merchant and likes to cause issues which isn't a part of the game I like at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Konopylanka is a much better option in my eyes but if the club want Costa its for a reason .
He will add something we miss and that's some fight . Hell Cantona was a wind up merchant to but you don't hear the mancs complaining about the job he did for them . Hell i'd take Ken Aguero if he was in a shirt and showing the desire to win this guy shows .

Already we have snide remarks concerning a potential signing of Costa. face it, youve all seen as much of him as you have papa or Erickson or Alderweirld, which amounts to next to nothing. If I remember right he partnered the likes of Falcao perfectly so why wouldn't he do the same here. I dunno for sure as like everyone else especially the doomongers I havnt seen enough of him to properly comment but if the reports from last season are true then he'll do for me. Nutter or not.

The Liverpool Echo is going with the Diego story, so there must be something in it, as they are normally spot on with LFC news.We are apparently waiting to hear Athletico's response, to us triggering a clause in the players contract. I expect something like what they smoking in Boston.

Costa has been excellent for the past 2 seasons and would adapt to the EPL easily. Strong as a bull but with skills - and a couldn't-give-a-feck attitude to the media. He's a fighter, which is why BR likes him. More likely to play centrally than wide, especially as he's quite selfish (in a very good way).

Diego Costa was used almost solely as a left winger for AM last year, presumably Rodgers sees him fitting in well with the fluid front three he wishes to play with. Competition for places only breeds success, no united fans are complaining about having Rooney, Van Persie, Chicharito and Welbeck. So why should we complain about having Suarez, Sturridge, Aspas, Costa. I now fully expect borini to go back to Italy as he really hasn't settled well. All the best to him as always worked hard and showed glimpses, particularly against Fulham last year. I doubt Ayre would come out today and say Suarez not going, and then sign costa as replacement only a few hours later, Costa is here to support Suarez. YNWA

I asked whether the interest in Bernard has increased a lot in the last few months because he is now 'more eligible' for a work permit?
Read what you put about the big clubs cherry picking and the others not being deemed good enough for exemption due to the big teams not showing interest, its a shame that they cannot sort something out to help the smaller clubs with that, however, the smaller clubs are the ones bringing English lads through so maybe their lack of draw for foreign talent is a blessing in disguise!

REPORT CARD: FSG

Since there's been a lot of talk about our owners recently I thought I'd write a review of their performance as owners of our club

MEDIA & COMMUNICATION
-----------------------------

Lets start with the good. Since their arrival they've been pretty good with the media and have been rarely caught off guard and unprepared (as was often then case with H&G). In general they have been respectful and cautious with the media, making sure that at worst they come across in a neutral fashion but mostly positive. They have not made wild promises and being quite realistic in both their goals and words. They also did not hit out (as some other owners have in the past *Sugar/Bates*) when they received some negative attention (as with the death threats).

"We regard our role as that of stewards for the club with a primary focus on returning the club to greatness on and off the field for the long-term." - John W. Henry upon completing the purchase.

I still believe this quote to be true and that they have demonstrated their commitment to making our club stable and self sufficient.

"I am proud and humbled, " said NESV head John W Henry. "I can't tell you how happy I am. We're here to win." - Again more measured and positive words.

"We're going to do a lot of listening, we have a lot to learn, and we'll walk this path together" - John W. Henry talking about the fans.

Again I don't think people can argue that they have delivered on this promise since they hired Kenny on a permanent basis due to fan popularity.

There have been a few mishaps, stating that they had total faith in Kenny one month before sacking him is an obvious mishap, but is there a premiership board which doesn't give a manager the dreaded 'vote of confidence' just weeks before sacking?

GRADE : A-

FINANCE AND COMMERCIAL
-----------------------------------

Since taking over, Liverpool (as a brand) has grown significantly and while some people (and a lot of managers) disagree with end of/pre season tours there's no denying they strengthen the global brand and increase market share, on this front FSG have performed rather marvellously. They have also negotiated record breaking kit deals since they took over and have increased advertising revenue by quite a bit.

In addition to this they have slashed the wage bill drastically and also invested roughly 50m per season of their own money in keeping the accounts straight (in part due to new stadium plans) this represents quite a clear commitment to the club.

It's true that a lot of transfers have been funded by the sales of other players but people should remember that the money received from transfers does not have to be re-invested in transfers (just ask Manchester United as they have yet to re-invest the money from Ronaldo) this is very significant in my opinion as they could have made the transfer income unavailable and simply used the money to service the accounts and keep us straight (balancing the aforementioned 50m per season). They didn't, they have made virtually every penny available for transfers.

For those who still disagree with this, which would you prefer. To be a player for a couple of years like City or Leeds (at the height of their spending) or to be a player for the foreseeable future like Bayern and United? The first approach takes ridiculous and unsustainable amounts of money, the second simply takes pateience. You've waited over twenty years, will 3 or 4 really be that bad if the return is constant finance?

GRADE : A+

DECISIONS AND STAFF
--------------------------------

This is perhaps FSG weak point, as so far nearly all of their appointments have been a mistake. let's have a look.

Kenny - initially a great success, the interim appointment seemed to suit all parties. Kenny was allowed a swan song (a very good one as well) and FSG had time to search for a full time successor. However the fans (and if he is honest Kenny too) wanted to give Kenny the position full time. This didn't turn out very well as we failed miserably in our primary goal of getting back in the champions league.

Commolli - I don't think I need to say much about Damien, his negotiation skills are legendary. as in its a legend we will tell to future managers and DOF's of how not to conduct a negotiation. We will never really know who selected the players which were bought (though I suspect the selection was manager and the buying was Commolli) but we can agree that some of those players simply did not improve our team. One did and its arguable that over the last year another has become a valuable squad member (Henderson). But overall the players were not what we needed, and badly over priced.

Jen Chang - The less said about this appointment the better, truly terrible and many people knew it even before the big incident.

Rodgers - Perhaps the only real success of FSG appointments, they took their time in appointing him and gave him the freedom to buy who he wanted (as opposed to having a DOF) a decision which probably made them nervous given the wasted money previously. He came with some new agey sounding terminology and an idea to improve us on the field. I won't say he's a resounding success yet but he's demonstrated that he at least has some tactical acumen and an eye for under priced talent at times.

GRADE : C-/D

OVERALL
------------------

Having re-read the summary I just wrote I think it's fair to say that they have done pretty well and have actually had the club interests as a priority over their own interests. They seem to me to be responsible, realistic and fairly down to earth owners, if a little naive at times. They've made mistakes, but it was new territory for them and I don't think they did too badly considering that.

GRADE : B-

Thanks for reading comments always welcome and appreciated.

Ed02 mate you have always defended here people who are running the club.

If owners are dong their job as you say

Rodgers doing his job

Board are doing their job etc etc, then why Liverpool is struggling somuch? You yourself said a month back that you don't see LFC in top4, if everything is right as you say then where the problem lies, infact things are getting worse every season, this time we couldn't even achieve europa forget champions league, it really pains me to see the state of our club, when will we see champions league again at Anfield, when will we see dominating europe, when will we see Liverpool playing in highest level?

{Ed002's Note - It is a competitive situation. I have said that I think that the top 4 is perhaps a step too far for Liverpool right now but it is not out of the question. I expect Liverpool to be fighting for the other European places but there is a bunch of other decent sides out there - the Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs et al. The team played well thru the latter half of last season and Rodgers is looking to strengthen. There is no divine right to be at the top of the league or winning in Europe. When Liverpool were at their peak Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa were the ones to beat.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed I completely agree that we are not in a position to challenge for the top four yet (possibly could be if we bring in the right players this window.) But at the same time you have said and it is well known that the target for the season is top four.

So if we don't make it into the top 4 this season then we have failed the objective, my questions is do you think the owners might look at the managerial situation again as no doubt Rodgers would be blamed along with his signings?

I personally hope not as I like Rodgers and think he will get us to where we need to be and changing the manager constantly won't fix the situation.

So I guess what i'm asking is if we don't make top 4 this season do you think the club will have patience and keep Rodgers on?

Agree0 Disagree0

OP. Think of

Usain Bolt is the fastest sprinter on the planet, on his day there isn't another runner who can touch him. He's dominant in his sport and has been for years.

Now if he decides tomorrow he's going to start smoking, eating only KFC by the bucket load and partying the night away every night hoovering up lines of coke off of naked models he's going to under perform.

If in 5 years he has a revelation and decides he wants to come back he could go out and hire the best manager, the best trainer, the best nutritionist, psychologist, agent and get sponsored. He could train harder than ever before, everyone does the best job possible. He's in the blocks goes on the B of the bang, great acceleration, impeccable kick on, he lengthens his stride and everything flows, its all gone perfectly.

Except he's in a race against people like Yohan Blake, Asaf Powell, Tyson Gay who all kept improving consistantly and a ccouple of others who appeared new on the scene who had even better training and are younger.

The game moves on, what once was may never be again. but even if we never win another title or trophy the Liver Birds will still be on my tombstone when I'm pushing up worms.

I have explained that Reina wanted to leave - and have been doing so for months.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Suarez wants to go, Ed. That doesn't mean anyone will pay the amount we demand. Why is it so hard for you to understand that there is no option for Suarez this year?
He will stay because it seems RM is not bothered to buy him. at least this year. Arsenal will not pay 50m+ for him.
So please explain us how will he leave if no team is willing to pay that much for him?
I don't give a toss if he stays and bangs the goals again. I will give a toss only when he is not bothered to play and frankly knowing him I don't see that. {Ed001's Note - if you say so, you must know all after all, the nameless posters are always the most accurate of course.}

LEGIT - heres the hold up with the suarez deal. the clause in Suarez's contract means that Liverpool only have to inform suarez that a bid has been made. HOWEVER the clause also states that if a champions league club offers over 40m and Liverpool are not in the champions league then suarez may be sold. the hold up is that Liverpool are saying that arsenal are not in the champions league as they have not yet qualified for the group stages. the qualification games are on the 20th and 27th which means there will still be 3 days to complete the transfer. arsenal will have already started their premier league campaign however this dosen't matter as suarez is banned for the first 6 games. so basically we just need to be patient i'm confident the deal will happen

He continues to work hard and train hard for Liverpool. That will continue and I'll expect him to be here at the start of the season.""It's not something we're interested in and, as our fans would expect, we rejected both. The man is firstly a hypocrite, it's not that long ago he was begging Steve Gerrard to stay when Chelsea twice nearly got him to move to Stamford Bridge (i'm glad he stayed by the way).
But what bugs me the most is it was his opinion along with David Moores that landed our club on the brink of financial ruin by selling to the two cretins Hicks&Gillette, when by all accounts a far wealthier genlemen from the far east wanted to become our owner.
Who knows where we would be now, maybe a "sweetner" was offered to our then chief exec. to allow the two Ronnies to take over. He clearly was innept at his role as he sat and watched Manchester United become a global football financial monster, we used to be bigger and better than them.
So we are now watching ourselves trying to play catch up thanks to him and his opinions.
Our hero's will come and go but the club will always remain the greatest in the land, why, because we love it but that's just my opinion.

I still think Suarez is on his way to Madrid. Even if they buy Bale.

Bale's camp letting it be known he is a bit miffed because he was told that there was a "gentleman's agreement" in place whereby he could consider a move if the bidding hit a certain number (£81m).

So, Real do their thing and let slip a report that that are ready with an £82m offer for the Bale.

The actual offer is cash plus players. It's Angel Di Maria, Fabio Coentrao and £37m million in exchange for Bale. Implicit in all this is that Di Maria and Coentrao are worth £45m million combined, they want to join Spurs, and Spurs want them and their wages for 5 years.

Which, in all fairness is a smart move for Real. They have £43m from selling Higuain and Albiol, and neither DiMaria nor Coentrao will likely get a lot of games next season with Marcelo back and Isco signed (£23m). So, they get rid of 4 players that won't likely play as much this year yet are on high wages and then bring in Isco and Bale for effectively £17m net outlay and have wage money freed up to give Ronaldo a pay rise.

And so they'd still have the ability to buy Suarez for £45m, for a total net (barring any other sales) of £60m summer transfer window and they'd have Ronaldo, Bale, Suarez, Ozil, Isco, Benzema, Modric, Rodrguez, and Morata for the their forwards.

Of course they'd have to throw out 2 extra footballs on the Pitch to keep Ronnie, Bale, and Suarez happy.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I highly doubt Di Maria would want to join Spurs. And the offer was just cash according to ssn. {Ed002's Note - There have been discussions between the parties about players being part of a deal and an initial offer included two players. Spurs have made it clear that they want cash and have suggested a number that RM won't accept. RM have suggested what they would pay in cash - but obviously would need to sell the players to raise it.}

Agree0 Disagree0

They should have just bid £80m plus €1

After we lost out on Mkhitaryan we surely must still be targeting a creative force with the departure of suarez we will only have coutinho as a genuine spark. Can ed1 or anyone else for that matter share any info on potential realistic targets. Many thanks Jimbo

Believable0 Unbelievable0

HM and Aspas were Suarez's replacements. That much is obvious. We're looking for a goalscoring atta king midfielder, a starting CB and a cheapish fast LW. That's it. CB dependent on Skrtel or Coates leaving. Others on Suarez leaving. That's why nothing is happening. We could net spend zero to 10m or make 10m profit on sales. Michu, Papa and Atsu/ Ince type signings.

Hello Eds, I must ask as I am quite confused on the matter. Liverpool seem very keen on telling the media that Suarez is staying. I don't disbelieve you guys at all but I'm wondering if the stuff media is the actual stance the club are taking?

If the club stance differs, could you explain how please?

Thanks. ^_^ {Ed002's Note - The club want Suarez out. Suarez wants to leave. Suarez wants to get another £2M out of the club. The club want him to put in a transfer request and save the £2M. The club want the best deal that they can for the player, but will at some point have to decide if they are willing to let matters drag out or not. Obviously the longer the club hang on for a deal that suits them to be put on the table, the less likely that any player (let's take Leandro Damiao as a hypothetical example) would still be available. When he goes, the "blame" (that fans of certain clubs are so seen to be attributed) must rest on the shoulders of Suarez.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree with you Red Jay
Same thing when we were interested in buying Ince back

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think the club want him out ed, if Suarez turns around and says he wants to stay the club would be ecstatic so not sure you're right about that to be fair. The way Gerrard and Rodgers have been talkin about him doesn't sound like they want him out, I don't sense not even a tinge of bitterness or dislike for suarez at all from them. {Ed002's Note - So you think the club want to keep a player who is desperate to leave and has made it clear the players around him aren't good enough and taken legal advice over the terms of his contract? It will be like having a rotting fish in the dressing room all season.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Jayden look mate he wants out desperately, if he had any decency about him he would put in a transfer request and forgo the fee he's a greedy conniving t**t.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 20:11:13
Thanks Ed02. So is all this talk of him staying, simply to annoy him and to get him to hand in a transfer request?

Also, I think this loyalty bonus(am I right? if not we'll just call it that for the sake of it) should also be null and void when the player talks in the media or to anyone for that matter. It's disgusting that a player can rip off a club like that, what makes it worse though, is the club agreed to it! {Ed002's Note - The 5% of the transfer fee is payable if the player does not request a transfer. I imagine the club would be happy to see his behaviour void it.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez' agent is flying all over Europe trying to get his client a move that he so desperately wants. He is willing to join a rival of yours. Even join Monaco who are not in Europe next season. He has belittled his team mates by saying they are not good enough. He has been done for racial abuse and he has bitten two fellow footballers. He has ruined Kenny Dalglish's memory. He wants out of Liverpool YET will not hand in a transfer request as he doesn't want to lose his £2m loyalty bonus (ironic). I am amazed Liverpool fans are still defending him. Baffled by it in fact.

Disney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed I usually agree with most of what you say but I do feel that your observations of the Suarez situation are more perceived than actual. Ian ayre has released a very strong statement saying Suarez ain't going anywhere, Rodgers has said the same and the players have said the same. I think this 5% thing is all in your head because there has been no suggestion that he is after more money or that money is a motivating factor is anything. He wants to play for real, simple as that. Just like reina wants to play for barca. Liverpool are not playing mind games or trying to "protect his value" by issuing all these statements, they genuinely want to keep him for one more season if they can convince him. I like you but sometimes you have to remember that your observations are not always correct. Liverpool want to keep him and they've made that very clear. We don't have to sell and we won't unless real or another foreign team meets our valuation and Luis forces the move. If we wanted him out so badly we would have entertained discussions with Arsenal. Not having a go just my opinion mate. {Ed002's Note - It is pointless trying to explain. I told you bout the legal advice and the confrontation they were trying to avoid in Australia 10 days before it hit the press. His agent has been in to clubs trying to get interest in him in the past week - one of those clubs is English. I assume you think Gerrard is lying about the hard work he is putting in to try and get Suarez to stay? And the 5% is tied to the regulations - and not something in my "head."}

Agree0 Disagree0

I get where you're coming from but you're saying the club want him out. if they wanted him out why would the captain be trying to convince him to stay? do you see what I mean? all i'm saying is that I think on this rare occasion you are wrong in thinkin the club want him out because clearly they are desperate for him to stay. Also I understand the 5% thing is regulation but Suarez's decisions are nothing to do with gaining 5% of the transfer fee. He is a multi-millionaire and is going to make another 20million at least in his career so i'm not sure he is bothered about 2 million quid. The reason he hasn't handed in a transfer request is because he knows there is no guarantee that a club will meet the valuation and he may have to stay another season. Suarez can be stupid but not even he is that stupid enough to hand in a transfer request without a guarantee of a move. his life would be hell on earth if he handed in a transfer request but then had to stay another season. By the way, how do I apply to be an Ed? {Ed002's Note - So you don't think Gerrard has a mind of his own? This is just hopeless watching you flounder around grasping at straws.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure i'm clutching at straws just having an open mind, I couldn't care less if he stays or goes. i'm just confused who you think wants him out? When you say the club who do you mean because the owners, the captain, the manager, the players all have publicly said they want him to stay? So who do you mean? You keep saying "the club" want him out but I just can't see who that could be specifically? Help me out. You're so vague sometimes and that's why you probably end up getting into arguments on here because its not always clear what you mean. Who in the club wants him out? I fail to see who to be honest. The owners see Liverpool as a business and the only way to make money and get a return on investment is to be in the champions league competing at the top level. the only way to do this is to keep your best players and that includes Suarez.

To all the fans saying they'd like to see Suarez leave for £55m, I understand why given his behaviour, but who would/could we buy with the money, because I don't see anybody near good enough to replace him at this stage? It sounds like we're on the verge of two marquee type signings, which I hope we get and keep Suarez aswell. I am sure he's been given this assurance to encourage him to stay. He won't go to Arsenal, but if Madrid or Barca come knocking with the right fee then good luck to him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

His talent, skill and ability are better than we can get for £50 million, yes maybe, but we could get someone who plays every game rather than I suspect 75% because I am sure if he stays in UK he will miss more than just 6 games. once a knob always a knob

Not a rumour, just a query. I cannot remember quite as many players going out on loan as this season. I think its a very good move to blood our younger players and get them upto first team ability, fitness and knowledge.
I was just wondering why Benitez, Hodgson or Dlaglish never really loaned out players?
Makes you wonder, if Morgan and Spearing had been loaned out for a couple of seasons in the last few years, would they be first teamers now instead of struggling to push into first team at Liverpool?

Anfield Andy {Ed002's Note - In RB's last season there were 17 players out on loan. Hodgson put 11 out on loan and Dalglish 9. Whereas I think Rodgers only put 3 first team players out on loan last year. Morgan was loaned out and before that he was too young - like Sterling was too young to go on loan.}

I really am getting so bored of listening to all the moaning and groaning we have signed some good players just because its not 30 or 40 mill everyone moans, we were prepared to part with big money on hm but he didn't come to us, people need to get a grip of reality this isn't fantasy football its business and books have to be balanced, so no we don't have 200 mill to go spend on 5 or 6 players sadly, we obviously have some money but i'm glad that br is not going to spend stupid amounts on money grabbing mercineries havnt we seen enough of them!! and just because br isn't coming out saying we want eriksen, muriel, barnard, soldado, etc doesn't mean we don't have targets i'm sure he does, I agree we do need some top class players to come in but didn't coutinho and sturridge combined cost 20 mill and there hardly useless r they, and i'm sure when its time for us to know who we signing then we will here, but br obviously has a good eye for talent as in all of his signings so far can anyone actually criticise any of them on what they done so far, and we r getting to see some of our great youth coming through, this is a big season for us so if we do no better than last year then people can have a go but I for 1 believe we will fare much better

Agree0 Disagree0

LOL. But what's to be positive about Marshy? It's not like we had a brilliant pre-season conceding no goals and winning every game even without our main striker and Suarez barely playing? It's not like we got in 4 very good, clever signings early in the window or that we have a lot of good up and coming talent in the academy? If only we had signed a striker in January who could be the fastest striker to 10 goals for Liverpool and another astonishing young player who could help us create chances- perhaps if all of that happened I might have something positive to say.

I agree sometimes we can be a nasty bunch criticising players unfairly, giving abuse to the owners and management and acting like we know exactly what goes on behind the scenes. I value some criticism as I enjoy the debates and general banter that no other page other than this one can offer, we have intelligent posters who look at patterns and links and share their views with the rest of us in a logical way, then you have the nutters who believe everything and are adamant they are right, this only adds to the entertainment.
Perspective is key to positivity, for example two fans could argue about whether keeping Suarez at the club or selling him is a positive move, and in the end either one of them could be right.
We do have things to be positive about; the academy is in good shape and appears to have a long production line of quality players available for the future, the stadium is being redeveloped, we have an excellent stadium, fans and the best kept pitch in the league. we look like being a team that will cope well with financial fair play rules, we still are the most successful team in England, we will be successful again with Rodgers as manager the groundwork is clear for everyone to see.
Finally we don't do it enough but if you consider how big a headache this negativity gives you spare a thought for the poor ed's that have to read it all, so thanks Ed's great stuff, insight, tolerance, etc.

Hello fellow reds,
I see a lot of you have started with how the owners saved us from administration and so on. Sure we are thankful but is it enough?
I have finally come to terms we won't be a top 4 club for a very long time given our transfer activity. I mean seriously BR says we have money but will spend it only on quality. No one is asking for star players but only upgrades on the dross in our squad. Is it really hard to find a top LW, an upgrade on DOWNING, an upgrade on SKRTEL and a good back-up to LUCAS.

I am trying to be as less negative as possible and will always be an LFC supporter but just feel if this is the best we can do to achieve top 4 we should not hold against players like SUAREZ, AGGER, and after a few years COUTINHO if they leave us for better teams. They have the quality to play for teams that can match their ambitions.Simple as that. I was first really angry with Suarez but watching our recruits I reckon he is better off leaving as even I feel pretty certain we at best will only challenge for Europa League.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

"I am trying to be as less negative as possible"

I read on here recently one post from one if the overly optimistic posters stating that he/she prefers to see their glass as being half full.

How can that be? I think the proverbial glass should be analysed by how much was in it before it arrived at the point we are measuring. If a glass is full and you drinks half of the contents, it is then half empty. Alternatively, if you pour water into an empty glass until it reaches the halfway point this makes it half full.

In the last eight years we have been in two European cup finals, came second in the league and were ranked no1 seed in European draws. We are now seventh beat and deservedly so.

For me this means our glass is now half empty and that is just being realistic. Hopefully if we can add some top class players this window then we can begin to fill up our glass again but if we don't then I fear it will be a little emptier again this time next year.

Keep it real folks and we'll enjoy better banter discussions as a result.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally do not think we are that far from top 4, we gave silly points away last season, points that would have had us in the top 4, the first half of last season was our undoing, is we carry on as we left off last season I think top 4 is easily within our grasp

kevc

Agree0 Disagree0

Eds, if they have been surprised it must be on the cards that they are looking to sell a stake or the whole club.

If they aren't in a position to move the club forward then in a few years they could see themselves losing even more money than they are now?

They like all owners talk a good game but in all honesty they don't have the funds to get the stadium plan going or to invest into the side to give us a better chance of top 4. They are pinning all there hopes on FFP which look like a joke with the way some are spending. The only way they will make money out of us is if we are playing in Europe on the big stage.

If we become a mid table team and just scrapping for 6/7th place the value of the whole club will reduce and the good players leave.

Reducing the wage bill as they have is the right thing to do as a business if its not making money but Football is not a normal business.

Personally I bet they wished they never bought us, they don't care about the club like the fans and never will, it's all about $$$$$$$

They should have stuck to sports in there own country.

{Ed002's Note - You seem to be just making all of this up. You cannot have any grasp of the finances or the running of the club at all. Last season only two clubs in the EPL spent more than Liverpool. Year-on-year Liverpool are in the top 10 spending clubs world-wide. Would you like a nice sugar-daddy owner like Thaksin Shinawatra? How about Sheikh Al Thani? Or Sulaiman Al Fahim? Ken Bates has money in his pockets and is wandering the streets looking for work - would he do? Liverpool has good and responsible owners who have been supportive of the managers. They made a couple of mistakes in appointing Comolli and giving Dalglish the full-time job, aside from that they have worked on the commercial streams and stadium, and worked to overcome the stupidity of on and off field antics of one particular DF that have been rather more than disruptive.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed Are he owners surprised at the amount of s**t they get from some Liverpool 'fans'? I'd guess there's part of them that wishes they'd left us to it {Ed002's Note - The owners are aware of the perception that "fans" have through reports that are regularly (I think still weekly) prepared for them. These reports summarize the views which are published across various official and unofficial fan sites, sites like this etc.. The folks responsible for the data collection and analysis ignore or filter out knee jerk and extreme opinion of course. And to be fair to them the reports are well balanced and probably reflective of the underlying feeling of the fan base. The owners are obviously aware of the issues with social media as well. They are experienced owners in the sports domain and whilst the racing side of the business tends not to attract fans with such a level of commitment as other sports, both Liverpool and Red Sox fans are clearly at the higher end of the "voicing an opinion" tables.}

Can people please stop going on about Marquee signings are required for Liverpool or for any club for that matter, do you think 'Marquee players' were always worth 20, 30, 40 million pounds. teams and players and coaches improve and grow and hopefully eventually win through, hard work, knowledge and talent. then they become worth 20 million plus etc.
Take Steven Gerrard best player at the club and has been for many a year come from our own door step that's where winning comes from TALENT!
Im really happy with FSG and Rodgers work at the minute he has an idea and good football knowledge and is trying to let talent grow into a winning formula this will take time but the signs are good about which way the club is going at the minute.
and if Suarez goes then so be it I still remember the day Ian Rush Left and Luis Suarez ain't no Ian Rush!

"Can people please stop going on about Marquee signings"

Why?
Steven Gerrard agrees that we should aim for a couple. I hold the same view. By Marquee I mean talented, not in monetary terms. Just because others don't hold the same views as you, doesn't make them wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

Here's the quote from Steven Gerrard:

"If we get the couple of marquee signings we need and keep Luis that will give me confidence that we can compete."

I would be very happy for Stevie to have more confidence that we will compete. Wouldn't you?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Gerrard's statement is abysmal. Shows no faith in the new signings nor the team in general which is exactly the opposite of what a captain should be doing.

Agree0 Disagree0

If I was captain of Liverpool fc I would have no confidence or inspiration for what is happening we used to get the best players now we just accept that they will not come because of no champions league sadly the fact is they will not come because Liverpool will not pay the wages we should go he'll for leather get the best and we can always sell them next year .
Other wise it will always be, next year will will be good, we need to be good now before we get left behind, some thing is wrong we have more money from tv than ever before ok minus champions league we have more from sponsorship etc what's going on .
Is it all to make the books look good before due diligence again I hope not.
Saint kevs old boy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Your post makes very little sense to me.

LFC won't pay the wages of City, Chelsea, or United simply because we can't afford to. Our wage bill was already too high before. It seems you think constant losses is the proper way to run a football club?

Also, sounds like you would be an awful captain.

I wish everyone would stop with the doom & gloom saying "oh we're not bringing anymore players in, new owners are fooling us" and all this rubbish. New signings don't happen overnight & we've just gotten back from a tiring trip to 3 counties on the other side of the world in which we needed to put a lot of effort into this tour as it helps with revenue we are missing out on due to lack of European football. I for one think the owners have done a great job, for all the deluded doom mongerers just think back to Hick & Gillett & tell me you'd happily go back to them days, FSG have stabilised this club & I don't think many fans realise how close this club come to going into administration so for that I'll forever be greatful to FSG. Their continued work behind the scenes will ensure the club will have a healthy future, yes we maybe mid table for a few years while this happens but at least we exist.
As regards to new players, the money is there, we have had big money bids made for players like Henrikh Mykataryn & Papa the Greek, I imagine the work has started again this week towards the next stage of recruitment & I understand they might also be looking at alternative targets due to the Suarez situation. BR & FSG & Ian Ayre have all said transfer business is not over, BR said he's strengthend the squad now he wants cover at LB & 2-3 players to go straight in the first 11, that doesn't sound like someone who's spent his budget, this has been reiterated by FSG & Ian Ayre. These things don't happen over night & if we signed the players we want this week the same doom & gloomers will be moaning on deadline day that were not panic buying someone ten mins before the window closes. {Ed002's Note - You should have signed this.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with 99% of what you say. However there have been absolute denials from Shalke that ANY bids have been received in regard to Papadopolous. {Ed002's Note - Correct - there has been no bid from Liverpool for the player.}

Just something I thought of there now.

When people criticize FSG's transfer policies of employing the cheapest, youngest option; in the hope that they'll potentially make profit from the club, instead of buying proven quality players with experience, we often hear:

"You should be grateful of FSG, they saved our club from administration, blah, blah, blah" - Well actually they didn't!

There were other potential buyers that would have bought the club had FSG not bought us.

Remember Kenny Huang?

The reason FSG own us is because Ian Purslow decided it.

They might own us but they never "Saved us".

And I'd like just like to say, that they've barely put a penny into any of our transfers, considering it's mostly come from outgoing transfers and the freeing up of wages.

Torres alone would have saved us (Let's say he was on 80k a week) £4m.

Now we are buying players who will accept (Or are even just worth) 30-40k a week, and people are expecting us to compete?

Common sense folk.

SR (StrabaneRed) {Ed002's Note - Try the search function about Kenny Huang - I made it absolutely clear at the time that he was a charlatan even going as far as having someone seek out his office.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Seriously? You think Kenny Huang would have been a better option?

Wow.

Sometimes in a moment of madness I wish FSG would just take a loan against the club of a sizable amount and buy someone from FIFA 13 with a high OVR or whatever just to shut people up. Then I realize that we've been down that route before (rather recently, in fact) and it turns out it was an absolutely awful idea and has never worked for anyone.

Agree0 Disagree0

RDL, I didn't say Kenny Huang would have been a better option.

I said FSG didn't save us from administration like people always suggest, as there were other potential buyers from Liverpool and I pointed out Kenny Huang was one of them.

Liverpool would not have entered administration had FSG not have bought us was my point.

SR (StrabaneRed) {Ed002's Note - Kenny Huang was never a potential buyer.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I suspect you're correct and if FSG hadn't stepped in someone else probably would have. Whether a different potential owner would have been better or worse is a interesting intellectual exercise, but largely irrelevant as FSG won and there is no changing that. So far, they've shown themselves to be reasonable, pragmatic, and supportive. They've also made a couple of mistakes. While they don't perhaps deserve the title of 'saviors' they also shouldn't be rubbished as they are constantly on here. I would absolutely if the owners were made to feel more like part of the broader LFC family rather than a wallet as I suspect it might perhaps make them more invested in the team emotionally.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he still has money to spend in the remainder of the transfer window but "won't waste it for the sake of bringing a player in".

I would have thought that Papadopolous & Ericksen, would fit the profile. So might Konoplyanka, Muriel and Alderweireld. (I'm not advocating us buying all five of them, obviously).

We did well early on in the transfer window, however, Gerrard reckons we need another couple of 'marquee' signings and I would be inclined to agree with him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Exactly mate, those mentioned would improve the starting XI & are probably available.

I'm not an advocat of waiting until 31st August to get the business done, get them in for 17th August or even before so they have a couple of friendlies to gel, we don't wanting to be playing catch up again.

Eds slowly but surely LFC is losing its place amongst Europes Elite. We are Liverpool Football Club and there is no other club in the world like it, but we are seeing our club bit by bit being dissected and broken up from the team players were once we boasted some of the best goalkeepers, defences and the best midfield and strike force in Europe, where we were feared when teams visited, when it took 30 seconds to put pen to paper when a player signed, And it is very hard to take in because where did it all go wrong? We can blame Hicks and Gillette David Moores, Rick Parry, we've been a mish mash for years we never capitalised on our success, bad chairmanship, not moving with the times STILL not having a world class stadium it's a joke, we have just performed I front of over 300.000 LFC mad supporters, the potential is enormous, it seems as though we take three back I'm not a pessimist I'm speaking reality, if Agger goes and Suarez, we've lost Carra and PEPE what the Hell is going onwe are 3 weeks away from the season Now Rogers is saying I'm not going to spend for the sake of it, Mate we need reinforcements lively because that second half of the season will of meant nothing because we will be back to the drawing board Again! So Please FSG if you really truly have LFCs best interest at heart Please please INVEST into the team not potential or maybe they might come good I mean boss players who would go straight into the team and be a match winner or match saver because as I said at the beginning we are slowly but surely going to be drifting off from the leading teams and champions league or the title will be a distant dream, we at a defining moment in our Clubs History over to you FSG great work Eds bless ya loads Liam

Toure is a stop gap surely, aspas could be useful
Only time will tell I suppose, Alberto is a young kid
Who in time could be outstanding, look at spurs!
Chadli, paulinho and now soldado 3 first team players
Who will make the team better than last year and god
Knows who they'll sign with the bale money forget city
And chelski we are miles behind them and I'm not looking
For miracles but when saurez goes we will b well short
At the moment I think we will struggle to compete with
Spurs and arsenal, can u shed any light on the situation eds?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Spurs without bale are crap, who knows how there 3 signings will adapt.
Soldado may need a season to settle by which time he's knocking on 30.

When we made the signings of coutinho and sturridge they transformed us.

People mention are defence last year as being dodgy but also for me it was the amount of wasted chances in front of goal.

As a team we need to score early then we settle and get confidence, the longer it takes to get that goal are heads go.

Give are new players time they have all looked decent in our pre season games.

You never know Aspas could make an impact similar to michu last season.

"What gerrard and Suarez call quality is a lot differnt to what we call quality" " we won't spend money if the players we want aren't avalible" so Rodgers is pretty much saying there's gunna be no top signing this window! What a joke! Look at Tottenham 17m paulinho 25m soldado, we sell 20m worth of players plus the 25m we have to spend and there nobody available? We bring in squad players instead. What's the point? Spurs may have gotten rid of bale but with the 85m there gunna be a better team without him, and WAY ahead of us! We should of kept our team together and just bought in 2 top quality players, that would have convinced Suarez to stay, this stupid age thing FSG implements will be the end of us is they carry on! The 25m we've spent already should have been 1 top quality player. Not 3 squad players and a goal keeper (who's good but just a waste when u have a top quality one already). Seriously guys Swansea have a better strike force than us and I'd say unless we all get surprised with some quality additions our teams gunna be on par with Everton and Swansea, which is Imbarrising! Sorry for the rant but hearing Rodgers say that was a big wake up call for me that we're heading in the wrong direction. Enjoy coutinho while we have him boys 2 years from now he'll be gone 100% an with gerrard retiring around the same time we could really see the end of Liverpool being competitive!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A serious question and an honest answer would be appreciated- did you consider Sturridge and Coutinho 'squad players' when we signed them because of their situations and cost?

Aspas and Toure are not, in my opinion, squad players, nor is Mignolet. Adding Sturridge and Coutinho and you're now looking at almost half of our first team being different than it was this time last year. That's a substantial change already and I struggle to think of another team in the PL that could well start the first game of this season with a team that is half different than what they started last year.

In retrospect apparently one of the worst things we could have done was getting 4 players in early as now we've had to listen to this constant moaning all summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok tell me then would any of our so called first team new signings get into arsenal Chelsea's or the manchesters first team?

Well, Sturridge couldn't get into Chelsea's first team and Coutinho couldn't get into Inter's so I'm not real sure what your point is (other than perhaps helping me prove mine)?

All very negative on here today. FSG and Brendan Rodgers are doing their best for the club.
We would be in desperate trouble if FSG didn't come in and buy us and they have spent a lot of money, I don't think they can be blamed if they want to make sure of their signings.
Brendan is turning into a great manager and turning us into a very good team in the process.
Be patient and get behind the team because believe it or not this current squad is going places and has me more optimistic than I have been in years.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We are all behind the team and the manager and fsg but fsg mad promises that they have not kept so far they have only spent 4 million on players and not one marquee signing its understandable for fans to be upset they want to see fsg back their manager and bring in quality not squad players but first team players {Ed002's Note - The manager chooses the players, not FSG. FSG has ensured that year-on-year since they arrived Liverpool has been one of the top ten spending clubs world-wide. You have been told for the past 6 months that it would be getting tougher financially and that the club would move toward self-sufficiency - yet money remains even now for the right players at the right price. The problem is many of the fans want any player at any price - they care not if they would be an improvement to the team. The collective daily orgasms over any BS on Twitter is at the very least embarrassing. I would say suck it up, but perhaps that is not appropriate in this case.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Couldn't agree more. We've had a good preseason thus far, conceding no goals and scoring a fair few without the likes of Suarez playing much and Sturridge not playing at all. From January on last season the team played well with CL position type form and we've only strengthened since then by bringing in 4 more very good players without breaking the bank. Will win the league or finish top 4? The first is a huge long shot and the latter a tough proposition, but that was always going to be the case. Either way the team we have now is miles beyond where we were this time last season when competing against Toronto and Roma. If you can't see that then I'm not sure what else to say?

Agree0 Disagree0

My view of the current fan's mindset. The financial prudence, cost cutting and low cost player replacements. Sensible financial management of a enterprise that is cash flow poor due to owners conscious decision or just not as wealthy as they would like to be. Manager Saying Liverpool's best summer "signing" could be Gerrard. Strategy to prospect and speculate on players rather than buy a 1st team finished article. Pressure to get CL football to generate much needed cash and prestige but competing against cashed up top 5 and ambitious upper mid table teams. Fans mentally split as we know it is common sense to run a business sensibly and not borrow.
However we are LFC, massive supporter base, iconic brand, illustrious history so why can't we be more ambitious? Star player Gerrard even quoted as saying "If we get the couple of marquee signings we need and keep Luis that will give me confidence that we can compete. Keeping Luis could be our best signing of the summer." We are all confused. We need clarity on the strategy, we either have the funds or we don't. LFC need to just either spend on "marquee" players as Gerrard put it or just say that this is not are strategy. Instead there is all this speculation that is frustrating for fans and players as we do not know if we can play with the big boys but chose not to or we want to play with the big boys but can't. What worries me is we don't spend and don't get off the a good start considering our easy fixture list then the natural assumption will to be to blame the owners and manager for lack of ambition. The atmosphere at Anfield is quiet enough, we don't want it to get toxic as well.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It just doesn't make sense that a couple of weeks ago br said don't worry the big signings are on the way at the moment what's on the table a back up for enrique and only a couple of weeks to the off?

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with a bit I think. I don't think it's helpful in the least for Gerrard to make statements like 'with 2 marquee signings and keeping Luis we can compete'.

To me, particularly as captain, those sorts of statements are not exactly going to improve the morale of the team (nor buoy optimism amongst the supporters for the coming season) as basically what you are saying is your teammates aren't good enough and you're really being very unkind to the new signings by essentially saying they're not very good. No idea why he thought this was a good idea. Perhaps it would be better if everyone from LFC (manager, players, owners) just shut their mouths and focused on the football.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard is right though, it will take two marquee signings and keeping luis to makeus competetive

Still reckon 4 Quality players in coupled with Suarez staying and we will finish top 4. It won't matter if Spurs buy Ronaldo or Arsenal buy Messi.
But the problem is our transfer team. We can't keep worrying that because King Kenny wasted money on poor players so will Rodgers. Please for LFC's sake spend some dough to get 4 quality players.
Best part is it will take a max. of 30M + Sales money to buy them and we should easily make it up by finishing in top 4.
So what is the problem?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A little concerned by our lack of ambition this summer. Of our closest rivals, Spurs are spending £26 million on a striker and even if they lose bale, will be set to spend big to replace him, whilst Arsenal will surely spend a chunk of their wealth on a big name signing before the end of August. Meanwhile, if you take into account the sale of Carroll and Shelvey, we've spent a total of £4 million, not to mention the wage reductions from loaning Reina. All three newly promoted sides, as well as Villa, Norwich, Southampton, Swansea and Everton to name just a few have a higher net spend than us. Can we expect big spending to compete or is that unlikely, given the more pragmatic approach of the club in recent years?

I replied to a post earlier which, in between me writing and sending it, had disappeared off the page.
By coincidence my post was also about speed.
Specifically, about the pace of Ilori.
I read below somewhere that this guy is sh1* off a shovel quick.
Is that right?

In the past, players like Lennon, Walcott and (god forbid) even Gareth Bale have been described as 'athletes with no end product' on these good pages - by eds too, I may add.
Now it's Zaha's turn.

You can teach technique, positioning etc but pace is a god-given gift.
You've either got it or you haven't.
And Liverpool do not have enough at the back.
Toure to start? B hell.

Just had a horrible thought, If Bale goes to Madrid for 85m and they buy Soldado for 26m that's fine with me.

But, what if they offer 55m for Suarez?
They'll have the money from Bale's money.
If we sell to them that'd be it for us.
It'd be just like them though to put both Arsenal and our noses out of joint intentionally.

Please god, don't let this happen.
I'd rather sell to Chelsea or the Manchester clubs (obviously the Manchester United option would never happen).

On a side note, Brendan suggested today we have money to spend but only on quality.
I personally am delighted to hear this as frustrating as it might be for some.

No more Downing like transfers, he's decent but not worth 20m, if so, why do so many want him sold at a huge loss.
These are probably the same fans wanting the big money signings also, do you lot want to keep going around in circles?

Despite fully supporting BR and FSG I must, sadly, admit that I would welcome the Saudi Oil company in buying Liverpool. My cousin, a petroleum engineer, knows the company and says it has more money than Abu Dhabi, Dubai etc all put together. They are so rich they don't know how much they have!
is it a good thing? In essence no, but all our rivals are our rivals because of money! Buying power is what decides top4 and winning leagues etc. if BR pulls it off with what he's got (if Suarez stays), then he has pulled a majou coup, if Suarez leaves, we will end up mid-table as I don't see anyone replacing or paying to replace him. Funny, Liverpool's near future prospect depends on the whims of one player! The only way change the situation would be for FSG to make a statement of intent by providing funds for 'marquee' signings; Eriksen it the only one of our so called targets left. We tend to get targets but other like Spurs (can you believe it!) beat us to their signature. Nurturing talent is to be applauded but right now, RIGHT NOW, we need players to walk into the first team. to make us stronger on the field and not on the bench.
So please FSG and BR, get a move on before all are sold out!
And fellow fans, please don't reply about how negative this post is because it is not! IT IS REALISTIC! Time to pull our heads out of the sand!
Two signings, attacking midfielder and a striker will make us challengers. now what's wrong with that? Unless you want to spend the season watching games and saying' well we could've bought. if only we had him. '
At the moment we are buying young potentially great players. a great policy but you will need proven talent to help nurture that!
Here's to a good seanson my brothers and sisters!
YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not unrealistic perhaps but it all just sounds too nice and easy doesn't it. Endless money and buying who we want. but where does it end and what trouble would this club potentially be in if there then became another dispute about who owns what if the owners then decide to leave. These multi billionairs did not become so rich without being crooked, extremely ruthless, unflincning or very careful about protecting THEIR investment.

I don't know myself. Rather stick with what we know personally

The word used to describe 99% of billionnaires would be sociopath.

Agree0 Disagree0

I couldn't agree more, football has changed since the Chelski buy out. You only have to look at the players going to France for £50 - £60 million due to the cash rich clubs backed by oil money.

Its sad to say it but I agree the Top 4 will be locked down before too long. I do think we have some amazing talent in the Youth set up, but this will not bear fruit for 2 - 3 years, and if Saurez is an indication of the perception out there of the ability for us to challenge now then we need to make at least 2 high profile signings. I hate the word Marque signing but I think that's what we need.

Success Breads Success and with success comes more revenue and a higher profile. Getting into the Champions league position for example would be a major success.

On a plus note, I think BR is getting into his rhythm now and I do think we can have a good season, the football we play is looking good and in Couthino, we have potential player of the season (I rate him that highly).

Top 4? I doubt it, but maybe we will be a lot closer than recent years.

Devdog.

Agree0 Disagree0

Saudi Aramco are not going to buy the club. I worked for Aramco in the 90s and they're an oil production company - not an investment vehicle like DIC. They have no interest in anything other than getting black stuff out of the ground and maybe sponsoring a few local schools and hospitals in the Kingdom.

I don't think you're being unrealistic in assuming that we probably need more money (either through revenue or one of those nifty interest free loans converted to shares a la Mansour/Abramovich) in order to compete for the title. I do think you're being unrealistic in expecting a new owner with that sort of wealth to come in and buy Liverpool. If there was any interest from such, in would seem to me they would have been in for us when were clearly up for sale last time at a reasonable price. Which leaves us with the other option- slowly increasing revenue and building a competitive squad over the long term which is precisely what we're doing.

Exclusive information from my contacts in Spain is that Bale is the number 1 target for Real Madrid, not Suarez.
Barcelona have taken a decisive stride - or should that be leap - in the one-upmanship stakes between the rivals, showcasing a daring "Superman Dive" at the World Diving Championships.

Madrid desperately need a counter, hence the mad money on offer to sign Gareth Bale.
Madrid hope to showcase the Welshman's "Dying Swan" dive asap and will stop at nothing to ensure this happens.

A source close to the deal said: "I have been told by a person very close to the player that the deal is done and that it's not Arsenal. "No one ever takes anything for granted in this game until a final announcement is made but all the indications are he will be en route to Madrid or Munich - the only other serious bidders. "Luis has insisted throughout the Real Madrid is his favoured destination but Bayern's manager Pep Guardiola has been working hard in the background. "As I understand it a deal has been agreed and we are not far away from a formal announcement."

Hi Sport Fans

I have some news which you may not want to hear but I will share I with those who are interested.

I have been hearing that a lot of the rumours publicised are near enough true.

Suarez really doesn't want to leave and talks about going to Arsenal has a threat for the board to spend on big players.

He has faith in Liverpool but not with some of the current crop of players he is playing alongside.

Gerrard is right has to Liverpool need to invest in order to keep the likes of Suarez has Suarez is a winner and he gets frustrated with some of the results we had last season.

In order for him to stay we do need Marquee signings for him to play alongside and take some of the burden off and publicity and Suarez doesn't see the likes of Aspas etc has Marquee and doesn't technically want to do it all on his own again like last season.

He see's that Arsenal has the money to get Marquee signings (hence why he hasn't gone there yet because they haven't made any) and even tottenham and Liverpool are struggling to keep up so unless we do bring in some quality players he will leave.

You clearly saw how frustrated he was last season with final balls, even some of the passing and that showed in some of his actions (not saying it was right to bite etc).

Unless we get some descent players Suarez will go.

Trust me on this one.

Agree0 Disagree0

You seem to be perfectly right on this one. Guess, it's up to the owners to show if they do have real intent of making Lfc the force they once were. Very doubtful the owners will splash the cash for some "Marquee signings" as you say. Most probably, nothing big will happen and I'm expecting nothing that will cheer me up till the end of the transfer window. We are linked with everyone but I see everything as fake just to excite the fans and nothing much happening.

Agree0 Disagree0

You lost me at 'AFC have the money for Marquee signings.' Their club structure is very similar to ours.
Load of nonsense mate.

The general opinion among the reporters I trust would seem to be that the cash is there - but 'big name' players are just not interested in us when we have no CL football, and aren't a London club.

Suarez is leaving. Get used to it. Others will also leave and others will arrive. More than a month remains. We did the business we could do early. Teams interested in our players are hanging on for better deals. It's called negotiation. It's called football. We have lots of targets for differing scenarios. We don't need tons of signings. We need to have stability and greater depth.

Who do you rate as the best from; sterling Ibe or Sinclair and what type a players are they similar? I only got to watch sterling myself {Ed030's Note Probably Ibe although all there has bags of potential. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I reckon its close between Ibe and Sinclair. Sterling could become a lot more potent if he starts using his left foot a bit. For me he is too right footed.

Agree0 Disagree0

They play different positions but Ibe seems the most complete player so far. Could all have big futures but Ibe has impressed a lot of people in the past month.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Sterling is more developed as he's a year older, but Ibe has more potential.

Agree0 Disagree0

i would say potential wise ibe. but watching sterling in pre season, he looks hungry, sharp, focused, more matured. I think out of the three sterling will be the one were most impressed by this season. may I add that this is a huge season for mccaughlin and texeria, texeira is 20 and needs to stake his claim, he has deco potential, just needs a chance, he is lucky that his main rivals for the posistion suso and adorjan are both on loan. hope he gets some games, but I can see suso coming back next season ready to tear it up

Liverpool fans simply have to accept that the club doesn't have the finances to buy £20m+ playerS. don't come tell me that it's not all about buying £20m+ players and giving me coutinho as example etc etc. If you buy the so called young/unproven players with potential then it turns out to be 50/50. Either the players turns out to be very good (e.g coutinho) or a flop (e.g ngog). If FSG thinks that they cannot invest in the club or compete financially then sell it to some middle east or arab countries.
Now, before some fans start saying we do not want to buy the title ala city or chelsea, then what can I say just watch other teams spend big on quality players and winning trophies at the end of the season whilst Liverpool still dreams about next season.

k_g

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What you say may be true to some extent, but while I am one of those who would say I do not want to buy us success I also think its worth mentioning that many of these huge spending clubs cannot and will not keep this up. When they are financial trouble (worse than most are now at least) then it would be good to say we are comfortable. People knock Wenger for not spending big all the time but I really respect him for spending sensibly and being careful. (although 40-50 million on Suarez would put an end to that perhaps! :)

Gareth

Yes we did spend lots on players and look where that got us? We are struggling more now because we spent money on Carrol etc.

At least read my post before saying stuff completely unrelated

Gareth

Agree0 Disagree0

Gareth you talk about arsenal not spending big, it was because they had to pay for their new stadium, and the way you feel about us and them not spending should show you why both teams have not won anything or the prem in years, you need to spend big on players if you want to win anything its just the way the market is at the moment

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes but we soent bug money in crap players what we need to start bloomin doing is soending big money on good players

I believe they thought we weren't a million miles away from top 4 but I hate to say it but we are about 60 millon pounds in signings away Mr Henry. If Liverpool are making such commitments to Suarez it will mean an amendment to his contract, a significant pay rise and a commitment to pay him £2M on leaving. This is for someone who has dragged the club through the gutter and repeatedly acted like a complete DF. Suarez wants out and is going to some length to get his way.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed I see what your saying now.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed has bad as he is he still scores 20 plus goals a season and I have seen it myself last season when suarez was disgusted with some of the passes or chances missed by other players in our club, like it or not suarez wants better players around him, after all he is a winner with the same mentality of one and if he can see our bad players then maybe we should listen, because there is no players out there now who can gaurentee 20 plus goals a season, neymar for barca can't do it

mickey b {Ed002's Note - Right, the runt who wants out of the club should be allowed to name all the Liverpool players he wants sold on and all of their replacements? Why not give him the captaincy as well? The orange sunshine kicking in?}

Because we're consistently losing money every year, any money that isn't from player sales comes from the owners. This isn't our money, and it counts towards our debts at the end of the season. Therefore we can either gamble on cheap players who may or may not be good enough, or we can spend massively and hope that we don't get kicked out cause we failed ffp if we actually get top 4

Eds please answer. Stevie G is quoted as saying that losing Suarez to Arsenal would be a big blow to our top 4 chances. Other players and many supporters seem to be of the same opinion. Do you think that LFC would allow Suarez join another rival even if we got an offer of 50M plus? I would think Bale leaving Spurs will help our top 4 quest and if Arsenal get Suarez secure their top 4 place. It does not make sense to me in a season that Utd City and Chelsea all got new managers and Bale leaving Spurs giving us probably our best chance of getting back into the CL. What do you think of the situation? I would allow him leave to Barca or Real but not to anyone one in the PL. I think the fact he signed a new contract last year gives us the power to take this stance if we wanted. {Ed002's Note - I would imagine that Liverpool would prefer not to sell to an EPL side but it could still come to that. New managers at other clubs do not result in a season of transiton - that seems to be something peculiar to Liverpool. Chelsea have often changed managers in recent years but have been very sucessful.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I believe the only team that will be hugely affected by the transition will be United.

Rodgers take note! Spurs have made two quality signings with Paulinho and Soldado. If they keep Bale they have top 4. Liverpool didn't aim high enough with their targets. Why not stick on the extra 5 or 6m and buy Eriksen instead of Alberto who wants to join. Toure and Mignolet made sense but they were just replacements for outgoing players! Atleast they tried for Mkhitaryan so they deserve credit for that. Aspas was an ok signing as he can fill in a variety of positions.

Liverpool need to let some players go to raise cash! Spearing Assaidi and Coates will leave. Have Borini and Downing done enough to deserve a future at Liverpool? I don't think so to be honest! Skrtel is another who's future in doubt.

Replacements for these players should be Papa and two marquee attackers replacing Assaidi Downing and Borini. I think Johnson is adequate back up for Enrique with young McLaughlin looking really promising.

If Arsenal get Suarez then Liverpool will be competing for 6th place for at least the next three years on there own!

Asaps would be the direct replacemnt for downing.
Alberto, I am not sure, we should have got honda for the same price.
Assaidi and spearing would fetch a max of 3 mill, by which you can't buy anyone.
If asaps and sturridge could compete for CF position, where does borini stands?

The way I see it we would need a goal scoring attacking mid who is equally adept at playing striker so he can cover when Sturridge is injured. Someone like Michu does fit the criteria but was just wondering if there was anyone else people could think of that could replace Suarez in this way.

Just a quick one, this Lorenzo Melgarejo, someone put on this site he's 5ft 5ins. Google says he's 1.78 metres, which is 5ft 10ins. I know height is not massively important, except when you're marking against Stoke, but does anyone know how tall he actually is, and how good he is? Has there been any interest from other teams?

Should be good enough, we have a deal in place next summer for 7 mill to make him permenant.

He is just over 5 foot 8 inches and no deal is agreed to make his transfer complete next summer; there is probably an option to make it permanent agreed upon by both clubs, if they wish too, similar to most loan.

All this talk by Rodgers, Ayre and now Gerrard is just prevaricating the truth. Suarez will be leaving.

Just look at the Reina situation both Rodgers and Gerrard played the PR game of making us believe Reina would not be leaving and look how that turned out.

They are doing the same with Suarez.

Its all to protect his value.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

And I'd have it no other way.
What other clubs openly slate their players and make it abundantly clear they want to sell someone on? No one, of course.

I'm happy for the club to conduct themselves like this, key staff and players preaching the optimistic/hopeful approach, no bad PR out of their own mouths for once.

a big test in this saga for me will be this weekend, will LS play? how will the crowd receive him? How will his attitude be?

I don't envision many LS chants in the game (obviously the focus should rightly be on Steven and his contribution to the club, the city and his foundation).

misterdrumz

Agree0 Disagree0

What Reina situation? He said he wanted to go to Barca - BR found a replacement, Barca didn't want Reina, who was now surplus to requirements, so they did what every PL side would have done.
Strange idea really, but have you ever thought that BR, Gerrard and Ayre are telling the truth and like 99.9% of LFC fans they want Luis to stay.
His value is set, no amount of " prevaricating " will alter that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry John B, I believe they would like Suarez to stay no doubt.

What i'm trying to say is that there comments are purely to protect the value they can get for the player he will be sold and they want the maximum value they can get. So there comments are not to believed.

With Reina they knew he wanted to leave but continued to tell us and the media that he was going to be a big part of next season for us and he was happy with the competition - this wasnt true.

Im not saying that they shouldn't do this they should do what is in the best interest for the club, just don't believe what they say until things actually happen - that is my point.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its not about protecting value. Suarez is worth 50million regardless of what Rodgers, Ayre or Gerrard say in interviews, we won't sell for less than 50mill and nothing is going to change that. The players genuinely want Suarez to stay and everything you hear from the manager and the captain in the press is to try to convince him to give it another season.

I'd be surprised if we met what Schalke want for Papa. And I'm also a bit sceptical after his injury. ACL's are notorious for ruining careers, sometimes players recover but sometimes they're never themselves (Gazza, Roy Keane). Surprises me we're interested in him. I'd steer clear and get someone with a cleaner medical record.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He would likely be having a very stringent medical though mate. Liverpool would not make such a big risk at such a big price after aquilani.
Or at least you would hope not.

He looks a pretty solid defender, given his age is just 21. But Injury worries me too, he had 5-6 injury in his spell already.

Agree0 Disagree0

I've had a couple of ACL tears (both knees from football) and I know you're never the same again after it. There's a school of thought that believes if you have the reconstruction surgery while you're still young (under 30) you stand a better chance of a full recovery. But my take is that Papa hasn't played since last Nov. How on earth can you buy someone who has suffered a potentially career ruining injury without seeing how he can perform again to the same level? It would be a huge gamble to buy him at this stage before he has proved his fitness. We just can't take the risk.

Hello fellow kopites,
reading the Stevie G interview seriously feel he has hit the nail on the head.
If the club are serious about top 4 we need atleast 2 class signings and keep Suarez for atleast 1 more season, which according to Stevie himself is a defender and an attacker who will link up well with Suarez.
Can BR and scouts not see this?
Seriously please atleast show ambition to get top 4. Just 4 quality signings can make the difference and best of all they are available and would easily jump to play for LFC. Is it really hard to attract Papa(15M), an LB, Konoplyanka (15-20M) and maybe the newly linked Diego Costa (15M) or maybe a DM depending on prority.
I just feel we are going to pay for not spending this window.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Aug 2013 08:44:43
Is suarez stays with us, That would solve or RW/LW issue permenantly, also a cover to our striker If sturridge do gets Injured.
We should bring another Attacker. Preferbly LW or an ACM who could play in different positions.

If we stick Asaps and Sturridge as the main striker, I don't see any place for Borini or another striker If suarez stays.

Luis alberto purchase is still a mystry, If he was bought to replace Shelvey, why not Honda?, same price, proven, and could use in differnt positions.

I don't think Alberto would get into our team this seaosn.

Agree0 Disagree0

Is there any actual interest in konoplanky lad or are people just wishlist spouting again?

The OP here
Really feel we need to show our top players ala Suarez, Gerrard and Agger that we mean to have a real go at top 4 this year and so far it doesn't seem so.
I too support LFC like all others here but I don't wear rose-tinted glasses. Its clear we need quality in the squad and need to add it soon. So while we support Toure, Aspas and Alberto we need to understand they are not starters for a top 4 team and we need to work hard in the window to add quality to the first 11.

Agree0 Disagree0

Luckily Steven gerrard is our midfielder and not our manager.

MIKEY

Agree0 Disagree0

The OP here
I reckon Alberto's best position will be as an AM. He is not ready to start but is capable enough to play back-up to Coutinho. However do agree with you, we need a top LW hence Konoplyanka. He is class and Sterling can play back-up to him. The third importance in attack will be to replace downing with a better player reckon Diego Costa can be that player. These 2 signings will really take our attack to the next level.
In Defence only replacing Skrtel with Papa and getting in that Benfica LB on loan should be more than enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2013 10:38:22
Diego Costa is a superb player, Or probably Turan to play in the LW, also can operate as an ACM if COuntinho gets Injured,

COME ON PEOPLE LISTEN!

When will our ignorant stupid fans learn, we do not have the funds to buy 30-40million marque players especially x2 players, without additional funds from selling Suarez our total funds available at best will be 25million and that is still a huge investment by FSG considering our league finish and lack of silverware last season.

FSG have done fantastic work in rebranding the club and plugging the holes created by previous owners and managers but their philosophy for their businesses both in the UK and USA has been profitability which means without success of CL and PL we will not be able to spend the kind of sums required to compete with successful clubs or billionaire owners. This does not mean we will not be successful with our current squad we have a fantastic youth squad with excellent players coming through mixed in with seasoned professionals.

Not sure if FSG purchase players based on statistics like in the film Moneyball based on Baseball would be interesting if the model worked in Football. I would like to see the numbers see if it stacks up.

Jules in Australia

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hello fellow kopite,
actually no one is asking for 30-40 million players.
Even if you consider our budget is 25 million, we have so far actually spent less than 5 million.
So say its 20M+sales(Downing, Skrtel, Coates, Spearing, Assaidi)
that is alteast 40M to spend on players.
We could virtually buy Papadopoulos(15M), LB(1M), Konplyanka(16M) and Capoue(8M). Is it too much to ask?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Liverpool actually need two quality attackers coupled with Papa! I think Papa will be funded by moving Skrtel Coates and Spearing on. In attack I think Liverpool should try and move Downing Borini and Assaidi on keeping Sterling from going on loan.

Targets:
Bernard Muriel Eriksen Konoplynka Munian Sanchez Tello Lamela Shaqiri

Agree0 Disagree0

Mate we hear you loud and clear, but without some real quality we will not be getting CL! This is embarrassing for our once great club. We are fighting just to get in the CL, and haven't even been close for 3 seasons now. We want the league not just scrapping for European football

But to buy a top quality proven LW, would shed atleast 15-20 mill, dowinign + assaidi + spearing won't be enough for this money.

Agree0 Disagree0

If the owner's can't fund the transfers why are they here? Just sell up and move on.

Spurs have less revenue than us and are by most standards a 'smaller' club- yet they've spend 15 mil on paulinho and are just finalizing a deal for Soldado worth 25 million. Why are we not doing the same? We are a 'bigger' club and also don't have UCL this season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What?. just because we haven't bought a 30m striker they aren't commited. they have just purchased a goalie, a CB, a young mid fielder and a striker! Cost doesn't always mean quality. the amount of people moaning in january about coutinho a 20 year old who couldn't get a game at inter and sturridge a bench warmer at chelsea and look what they've done!. its would be bad business to spend every penny that comes in through sales if we don't need to. 2 more signings and i'd be happy. and about a month to do it!

Reality, we cannot have transfer flops, like city or UTD or chelsea.
we should have been wise in our purchases.
We have bought players who might be a future star.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree - 4 signings already and another 4 weeks before the end of the window, with BR clearly stating what he expects to bring in - not the most patient people on this site.

Agree0 Disagree0

"We have bought players who might be a future star"-like Allen?

You talk about top 4 finish and CL-no chance. Mid table this season. Even if Suarez stays he will not be available at the start of the season and if he goes and you bring in replacements they will have no time to integrate within the squad before the season starts. BR, if realistic, will see the coming season as one where serious rebuilding needs to continue, with no chance of CL. However, seeing the over optimistic posts on here, and the owners expectations, he may not last that long and then many of his signings will also disappear.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry make up your mind mate.
You say we have bought players who are future stars here as an argument to your post, then in a post further up you say we should have bought Honda instead of Alberto as he is proven?
Do you know actually what you want? This is the reason why the owners and the manager should never listen to fans, because they change their minds more than the weather. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but no-one possesses it.

Hi Eds,

You would think AC Milan would need to jettison one or two of their strikers.

Robinho and Mad Mario have committed to the club.

Pazzini and El Shaarawy and Mad Mario all competing for spots on the Azzuri World Cup Squad would want regular starts which will be difficult as they have no CL or EL either and also have Niang to develop. Pazzini although nearly 29 still has some great years in front of him and wouldn't cost the earth.

Also with Scheletto joining Inter would that mean Alvarez or Guarin would be available? {Ed002's Note - There are plenty of teh Milan and Inter players available.}

Agree0 Disagree0

DONT THINK SO
If they seriously give him no money to spend in the window and then ask for top 4 they seriously need a head wobble.
A team challenging for top 4 has to atleast have a transfer budget like Spurs. They have spent 50M wihout any significant sales. Even if FSG had given us about 30M pounds + sales, I reckon they had a right to ask for top 4. With the current budget a 7-10 finish is more attainable.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Aug 2013 01:53:49
Who or if any more players come in depends on the outcome of the Suarez saga. If he stays I'm sure we will still make a couple of quality first team signings. If he goes BR will have his work cut out finding a replacement; the money will no doubt be there but it's uncertain we will get a striker of the same pedigree. Personally I hope he stays as I think with him in the side we have a good chance of making top four. If he goes everything is down to who we sign and whether they hit the ground running.

BTW with all these mind boggling sums being bandied around for Bale and Suarez, in hindsight doesn't RVP seem an absolute bargain for £30million?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

RVP was sold for £24m, was in the last year of his contract and we were desperate to sign someone having lost out on Hazzard and Moura

We made a promising start to the summer with a few squad players added to our ranks. However, I thought we were in for some two or three big name signings as well that can immediately benefit out first team- this is what brendan promised us.

It now looks like we're just going to have to settle with what we've got, and unless suarez leaves, no one new will be coming in.

I for one thing this is scandalous- our net spend is virtually zero so far this summer. This is the last window in which we can spend without it taking a blow to FFP rules. Every other premier league team is looking to strengthen heavily. Even clubs like spurs and arsenal are looking to spend 40, 50, 60 million this summer on players. Where is our ambition?

The owners just don't have the money. Sell up to the rich oil owners before it's too late for us. We are blind if we don't see our team is to weak to challenge.

Given our curent squad I feel we'd need at least another midfielder (Eriksen), forward (soldado) and defender (papa) before we could even start thinking about top 4. We'd then need preferably a better winger and then cover at LB and RB.

6th place here we come- mark my words.

"6th place here we come- mark my words"

This a long name to mark. are able to shorten it?

Agree0 Disagree0

In order to sell something there has to be a buyer.

To people just think we can sell players (e.g. the why don't we sell Skrtel and Reina crowd) and the club to the ether? I must have missed the queue of 'rich oil owners' that FSG are fighting off.

I also love how 'ambition' really translates to 'I want other people to spend their hard earned money for my benefit'.

Agree0 Disagree0

Transfer window isn't over yet, bit of patience!

if we haven't brought in any "marquee" signings in 3 weeks, then I'm all up for this rant.

But until then, let's keep a bit of hope!

Agree0 Disagree0

By your own admission you have just said that this is the last window to spend big before FFP. Therefore how would mega rich owners after the transfer window closes make any difference. Doesn't matter if they would give us £1 or £10 billion.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yadda, yadda, yadda. you clearly don't know what you're talking about. How many players have the gooners signed? one. You'd think if we've wanted Eriksen, we would have signed him by now. Are you claiming you're better than our scouts? Are you aware of papadopolous injury? Do you want us to buy another Aquilani?

You are totally clueless - mark my words

Agree0 Disagree0

Whats wrong with you?. The team has been on a far east tour . I expect things to start moving on players again in the next couple of weeks now that they are back in the uk

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree the squad even with the new guys is not good enough to get 4thplace

Agree0 Disagree0

Reading your post I was thinking this guy really hasn't got a clue, just sell to oil billionares blah blah blah. Then he said get cover for left back (done deal) and right back (erm kelly, wisdom flanno!) and I knew it was just a troll. Silly me
Tcp

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, must admit I thought it was going to be a really positive summer but as we have not actually spent any money as yet (net), everything looks like it depends on Suarez leaving to free up some money. Feel sorry for Brendon as if he had around 30mil to spend then we could be challenging for top 4, even Norwich and Southampton are spending that kind of money!

Agree0 Disagree0

You say our squad wasnt strong enough - it is! We played some quality football last season and considering it's a new regime and we had some bad luck we did well. We will challenge for top 4 and would everyone stop going on about Marquee signings! We make Marquee players, not buy them. We want players hungry to prove themselves and wear the shirt with pride.

Stop acting like a spoilt brat, you remind me of a kid whose parents won't buy him all he wants then throws a tantrum. What we are building a strong team ethic, quality young players will serve us well into the future . Just a thought when the ffp rules do kick in, we will be well placed . Those clubs who spend their way out of trouble will struggle . City spent zillions and played as 11 individuals, we play as 1 and we should support as 1 .

If Real Madrid land Bale, I am willing to wager our little demon Suarez goes to Chelsea. Deny it, as many will, but let's see where the cookie crumbles. Chelsea clearly in for a striker, and they will not get Rooney. United not weak enough to sell to a major rival. We are, unfortunately, and when Abramovich comes flashing 50 plus million, we will cave.

I really don't see Arsenal coughing up another 10 million, and most of the other mega spenders are stacked in attack. Maybe one of the Russian clubs would buy him (and that is wishful thinking but would be perfect in my eyes). Perhaps a surprise bid from Barca or Bayern?

I actually have the same feeling, but you just don't know 100% mate until transfer windows closed .

Agree0 Disagree0

The only way Suarez will stay is if no-one wants to buy him. His agent is still going round the clubs offering the services of Suarez to them.

Good point mate, He would stay If no one actually wants him or no one actually meets Liverpool asking price.
Arsenal wants him so as real but won't pay 55 mill.

But this ugly, person, muppet, rubbish can go on for a strike to force the move?. or sit in the reserves or bench and get the salary.

Or what if he wears the shirt and plays with heart and scores 30 goals again.
you not going to appreciate right?

I like your spirit mate, No offence.

But everytime you slate him, I would have one reason to defend him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry,
I have and will never question Suarez' footballing ability.
I will question the rubbish that comes out of his mouth. The fact that he wants everything his own way to the detriment of the club I love. The fact he wants to squeeze as much money out of us as possible. The fact he has had his agent search for a new club for him after just 12 months of being here. The fact that he has spat in the face of all loyal Liverpool fans as he claims we aren't big enough for him.
If you want to defend that go ahead. Besides which I never actually slated Suarez in my original post. Nor have I ever been disrespectful enough to call him ugly which you clearly have. Is that not slating?
You always seem to have a go at Suarez but also defend him? I assume you're the definition of fickle?

I would like a signing of a Eriksen or a turan plus toby or papa. the two positions we need to strenghten. As long as suarez stays. !

Had to go read the article myself, but I'm astonished he actually said that.

We won't sign any Marquee players (whatever they are) and Suarez will leave.

Players all follow the gossip columns too looking for big name signings! They are no different to fans!

He is right, in mine opinion we need another class defenter to pair with mighty agger, and another attacker if suarez leaves, I would personally bring Higuain but he's off to napoli, damn :) dreams dreams :)

Eds, since Rodgers said its time to strengthen the team, we haven't signed anyone. Do you think he meant its time to improve our current players? After all, BR is a coach that fulfils potential. {Ed001's Note - no, it is just that we have not been able to sign the players he wants yet.}

Eds, when spurs sell Bale, they will have about £90m to spend. Which of Liverpools targets do you think spurs will swoop for with all these funds?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I know it may seem hard to believe but similar stature of clubs go for similar players. Its not real Madrid stealing barca's targets when they both go for players is it? Just get over this petty excuse for not signing a player and letting him get "stolen" from us. If we want him that bad and he only has eyes for us then he will sign.

Agree0 Disagree0

1) Levy wouldn't dare spend all of it, he will probably only spend half of it.

2) Please stop crying about stealing targets. If they were our targets we would bid for them.

3) Last time I checked there are only a small number of quality players so for them to sign some that are rumoured.

4) We have signed many if there targets also.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spurs won't spend 90 million they will play it late, just like Levy likes too. Offer us a toffee crisp wrapper on transfer day.He will also buy the Ajax Pair cheap. The difference between Levy and Dick Turpin, is Turpin wore a mask.

I suppose we're on a level playing field now financially with Everton and the players we can attract.

FSG looked at Martinez along with BR so will be interesting to see who made the better choice. Once Suarez is sold along with Skirtle our squad could be on paper even weaker than theirs.

I'm still 100% behind BR.

Hard to judge how he will fit into the Everton job tho.

If Sturridge can keep fit this season then I can see him doing big things. Quickest Liverpool player since the PL began to hit 10 goals. We saw in a few of the games that when Suarez didn't play he stepped up. he's found a great link-up with Coutinho and I reckon they'll be a great pairing to watch next season.

Dya know what?. i'm ready for the season to start, i'm sick of reading comments from supporters of Spurs etc saying we aren't a big club and how they reckon they've moved above us in the pecking order.
Well. We'll see then won't we cause I reckon we're going to surprise a few this season, If the 2nd half of last season is owt to go by then we'll be thereabouts, whether I agree in lots of the management decisions or not ill be backing our boys, I just hope we shut a few clubs with no background or history up with what we do on the field.
As a club we've not helped ourselves in the last 3 years but I've a feeling we're in for a good ride this season.
Come on boys get behind the club never mind what we all think of particular issues its time to show who the real big club is!
