I feel like Liverpool are going to have a different vibe about them next season. I hope they just keep the transfer talk low and when deals are done come out and show us all. I hate how we get so carried away with unrealistic targets when really brendan is doing some tough business getting the recruitment we will need for another long season ahead. I should like to think we could finish top 3. Again most would laugh and shrug that off maybe. With man city lurking for a new manager and struggling to find that engine they had for 11/12, everton now looking for a new manager, man united with so much pressure assuring fans that this is their man. I honesty feel that chelsea are going to be underdogs to win the title if and that's a massive IF jose mourhinho returns.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Man Utd - huge loss with Fergie going
Man City - adapting to a new manager
Chavski - going to make the huge mistake of re-appointing Mourinho
Spurs - may lose Bale now not in CL

Next season is going to be interesting.

Agree0 Disagree0

None of that will matter!

w got borini and allen in august to push for top 4. countiho was never a target in summer. since allen flopped misserably. br looked for another ACM {Ed001's Note - utter nonsense, Coutinho was not bought to replace Allen, except in your deluded world! Flopped miserably? He was our best player in the early part of the season, knee jerk fans like you are the flops. Why didn't you sign this post Harry?}

to Ed01. sorry mate. I sign it. I don't rate Allen. neither I like him personally. for me he is an 18 mill flop. is that a problem?

and with the limited knowledge I have may I know what actually is Allen s position?
a DM?. a CM?. An ACM? {Ed001's Note - for you he is an £18m flop, for those with any knowledge of the game they would know he didn't cost £18m, so that says a lot about your opinion. You don't even know where he plays, so how can you judge him on his performances if you can't tell that much about him? I can't believe you can really be this dense, you have to be a wind up.}

Jus a question for EDs001 if he about?
Bein a red and all how did u rate BR signings this season? Personally I thought a bag of revels comes to mind, j. allen I think has been harshly criticized this season havin had a really positive start think injuries & not knowing his position hampered his season (when Lucas come back & not knowing weather to stick or twist) borini, well not much I can say bout him but another one who struggled big style with injuries but out of all BR signings looks like he could b the most costly. Then onto our shining lights of the transfer markets, sturridge & coutinho, little gems in the making, now I normally don't like talking new players up (jus as much as I think it unfair to criticize new players) but these two if they carry on in the vain they started in could b magical for many years. Quick wrd on the legend that is Carra, legend gets used soooo much these days but If anyone deserves that status at this gr8 club then it him! LEGEND! YNWA {Ed001's Note - bag of revels is a good description, but it is very early to judge them. You only have to look at the major improvement Henderson and Downing have made in their second season to see that. Borini has shown some good movement, just needs to work on his composure, I think he is trying too hard at the moment. Allen started off well and faded badly, hopefully the extended break he has had will be what he needed. Sturridge has looked a lot better than I expected, though he still shows flashes of greed at times, it is nothing like as bad as it has been previously. I think we need to keep him right up top, even when Suarez is back, to continue to see these good performances though. It would be a mistake to change the way he is playing, Suarez could provide more out wide or behind him and allow us to keep that threat over the top. What can I say about Coutinho? He has been a revelation. A player that seemed to have it all when he first arrived at Inter, then stalled in his career, now he looks rejuvenated and has been brilliant. It is all about keeping him at that level now, which is going to be difficult, because he has set the bar right up in the stratosphere!
As for Carra, he had his faults, but he was great for us and deserved far more recognition and respect from England. I remember people calling him our version of John Terry, but that is total nonsense, Terry was never as good as him.}

Thank you Carra. Always gave 100%. A real legend. If Macca says Pepe is 95% on his way, then it's looking very likely particularly when his home club has a vacancy coming up. He has given us great service. If he goes its a concern as a new keeper is always a risk. However if we replace him with quality it would benefit the club financially as he is a very high earner. Well done to Ibe who for quite some time has looked an even better prospect than Sterling. Jerome Sinclair is next. Suso needs some game time and a loan next season will do him wonders. If BR and his team can sign a couple more Coutinos and Sturidges this summer we are in for a very good 2013/2014 season. Reality Red

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, we should send Suso to someone like Wigan as Utd did with cleverly, they play some nice football and we all know the championship can be competitive. He could always be recalled as we did with shelvey.

I think we have reasons to be quietly optimistic for next season. We have finished 12 points off our goal for this season but that is with only beating a team in the top 8 once all season. Normally in a season you have atleast 3 or 4 good results against teams around or avobe you and I am sure we will get that next year.
Add to that the fluke defeats to West Brom and Aston Villa at home this season which will not happen again, and the games we should have won about 6-0 but couldn't get an early goal i. e. Reading away and there's no reason why we can't claw back that many points next year.
With 2 or 3 quality additions, Allen and Borini having better second seasons, and Sterling, Suso, Wisdom, Ibe and Morgan putting pressure on the first team squad, we should have a competitive team.
Also we will have no europe to deal with so no early start to the season and hopefully a good cup run.
Come on Red men!

Jay

P. S Carra = Legend

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We should have had 10 extra points

should have kept 2-0 lead over arsenal
should have kept 2-1 lead over city (both times)
should have gotten jose enriques goal vs swansea
should have gotten the goal Suarez scored vs Everton.

but i'm not complaining it's done, nothing we can do about it. the first two were down to individual mistakes.

this season just too inconsistent be need two TOP CB's and 1 younger CB.
a good DM to back up lucas (very clear we missed him in the first half of the season)
still need a left wing to replace assaidi (that and also play right wing)
a right winger to replace downing

then we'd be sorted.

all has to be class signings the only two who can be future stars yet be ready for first team football is the replacement for assaidi and replacement for coates.

In my opinion if Barca are so keen on Bringing in Reina as their number uno then we should be trying to get Sanchez as part of the deal not Tello.

Reina and roughly 5-7 million would be a deal I think Barca would accept. Sanchez is still only 24 I think and is more of the finished article than Tello is right now. Sanchez can play on either wing and or up front. I think Barca would be willing to let him go, and we have an abundance of young talent, such as Suso, Sterling, Ibe, Teixera and Coutinho.

In Sanchez we would have a more finished article so to speak. It is possible Sanchez could be interested in a project like ours. The prospect of playing alongside Suarez, Coutinho, Gerarrd, Sturridge and Lucas would be something that would surely appeal to him.

The first half of this season we sadly lacked goals, pace and width, Sanchez has all three of these. Just my opinion and don't get me wrong I think Tello is good, but I would prefer Sanchez to go straight into our first team.

Jonesred

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Id prefer tello personally

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd also prefer tello

Reina for £5m + Tello sounds better.

on the right wing would could just sell downing and buy 1 of 3 players. Ben Arfa, Nico Gaitan or di Maria.

Eds can you enlighten me on the current situations with the following midfielders? Sorry if this is a pain but was just wondering if any would be possible targets.

First one is Isco of Malaga. I'm aware there's massive interest in him, but is his release clause really 35 million? I hear if Pelligrini moves to City, he's destined for there but if he can be obtained for say 25 million I'd like to think FSG would fund such a move.

Second is Ander Hererra of Bilboa. Does Hererra have a clause like Isco's for silly money? Quality player in my opinion and would fit into our system.

Third one is Iker Munian. I'm aware there was huge interest in him last year, but he seems to have dipped this year. Are Bilboa still commanding near 25 million for him or has his value dipped?

Fourth one is Sergio Canales. If I'm right he moved to Valancia last year from Madrid, but would Valancia be willing to sell after a season?

Fifth is Susaeta of Bilboa are you aware how much he would command if a club was interested?

Sixth. Ever Banega. Was subject of interest when Rafa was in charge but nothing since. Would he be available if a club was willing to make an offer?

Seventh. Lucas Biglia of Anderlect heard a number of other clubs have shown an interest and could be available for around 8 million. If true would be worth a punt.

Eighth. K. Honda. Although we did show some interest a while ago wouldn't Rodgers see him as a good deal? He still hasn't moved clubs and his fee seems to be falling all the time.

Sorry for the length of the questions ( 9 players in total) but just wanted to know if you knew the current situations on them in regards to possible valuation and availability.

Luck is subjective and non existent, much the same as ''talent''. Scientists have been looking for the ''talent gene'' for about 30 years and it isn't there or anywhere. It's genetics and practise, it's best simplified in the example of a soloist musician, the reason they are so good is because on average it's about 30,000 hours of practise before someone is able and at the standard of a soloist, which is about 3 and a half years in terms of how many hours that equates to. Obviously there are anomalies and prodigies but that's abnormal genetics.

Luck is undone by physics

Agree0 Disagree0

Luck is only undone by physics at the macroscopic level.

If you go to the quantum level then luck not only exists but it is an extremely powerful observation.

've had my whole life with Jamie Carragher at the heart of Liverpool FC. He thought me it was cool to play centre back and that its vital to always give 100% he may not have scored that many in his 737 games for Liverpool, 4 in all and scored more than double that for the opposition, but he saved hundreds and although Stevie G would always get the plaudits it was Carra who was strength at the back which lead to our wins. I have too many memories of this legend but my absolute favourites would be his last ditch tackle in the champions league final to keep it at 3-3 an then suffering from cramp and literally screaming in pain. But also the fact that he was the first to congratulate Dudek for his penalty save on shevva despite his cramp and was the first to reach the winner of the cup after every shoot out LFC won. A hero and a legend and he shall never be replaced I was so gutted he hit the post on his final game but he is the greatest centre back to play for Liverpool nonetheless. We all dreamt of team of Carraghers and now we shall suffer with a team of no Carraghers. So thank you JC23, our working class hero our rock at the back and the truest Liverpudlian there ever was and ever will be. Enjoy retirement, Liverpool will never be the same without you. YNWA, concon

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Carra was good but there was a better tougher man from Liverpool who showed opposition terms no mercy he was Tommy Smith.

Agree0 Disagree0

Joe you put this on faceebook aha

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not too sure about this Carra love-in that seems to be going on although maybe it's because I grew up with Lawro and Hansen so I was a bit spoiled. Throughout his LFC career I thought he was a decent centre back but I certainly wouldn't ever call him one of the best, an LFC legend because of his service yes but when we compare him to the very best i. e. Lawro and Hansen then I'm afraid he just doesn't compare. When we remember him I just want people to remember him in a real sense rather than through rose tinted spectacles, Carra was as I always believed him to be a very good brick wall but as a footballer? very limited I'm afraid, there is a reason why no-one ever even inquired about him and it's not just because he was Mr Liverpool, to not even have one inquiry says a lot and it also gives us a good idea as to why he never won the league aswell. If he truly was our best defender over the past decade or so then in comparison with what our players were like in the eighties then we really have let our standards slip. If we really want to kick on and win the league then we need to up our standards big time, with all the respect in the world Carra was very limited, a good organiser and captian yes but he couldn't pass, lacked speed and panicked when pressured on the ball. We need to do better.
Frank J.

Agree0 Disagree0

A harsh post Frank J. During his time we have had some excellent defenders; Hyypia, Babbel, Henchoz to name a few. Carra may not have had the class of Hansen, however he fulfilled his primary role better than all; that is he was a defender and kept the opposition out.
Truly a LFC great
G

Agree0 Disagree0

At his peak Carra was the best Centre Back in the Premier league.
He was one of the heroes of Istanbul.
With his perceived limited ability, he still clocked up over 600 games for a team that was regularly in the top 4.

Ipso Facto He's a legend.

Agree0 Disagree0

Frank J, that is the biggest load of toss I have ever heard of. Aside from anything else a) how do you know that he never had an enquiry after him if any enquiry resulted in a flat out no? and b) why would you enquire after players who would never want to leave their club and whose club would never want them to leave? If you have any management responsibilities, do you often tell your staff to go and completely waste their time doing things?

Carragher was brilliant. He lacked some speed and his first touch was hardly inspired but his tackling, positioning and bravery were top notch. And his biggest attribute was his attitude - bulldog spirit, never stopped driving us, never gave in. He was a defensive cornerstone of a team that won the CL, UEFA Cup, 2 FA cups and 3 League Cups and the lack of a league win added to that was down to an inability to score almost every time we failed. Nothing to do with rose tinted specs - he was a hero whose international career was ruined by refusing to become a new age 'spice boy' like Terry or Rio in order to be noticed

Agree0 Disagree0

Hansen, Lawrenson Hughes, Thomson,

Still Tommy Smith none better!

Agree0 Disagree0

Samsam9000 Cara actually didn't have any inquiries about him, how do we know this? The man himself said so in a radio interview in the past week. Just because you don't agree with what somebody says doesn't make it a load of "tosh". Think about what it takes to win the league and what kind of player you need and also take the blinkers off and you will maybe understand the line about Liverpool's standards slipping, Carra no matter how much you obviously "love" him wouldn't have been first choice for any of the league champions since we last won the title. Think about it precious.

Got to say I enjoyed that season.
It was almost like watching a team grow over a season.
Watching the kids turn to men and seeing the accedemy produce so much talent.
It took a whole season but we look like a team on top 4 form now. Especially since January We have seen tons of goals and clean sheets.
Another good window is needed now to really kick off to a good start next season.
I'm not overly worried about pepe leaving I think it's been on the cards a while. I think it's more about him wanting to go home than us wanting to sell. Besides there are plenty of decent keepers about and I'm sure a lot of scouting has been going on for a while.
Good luck to carra for the future you have shown us what a true professional you are.

19 May 2013 20:25:26
For me we should be looking at getting our business done early this summer and have deals tied up in next few weeks.

In my opinion I think it will be

Outs.
Pacheco 2-4 million.
Spearing 2-4 million.
Downing 10-12 million.
Carroll 12-17 million.
Carragher (retired).
Coates 5-7 million.
Wilson (free).

Ins.
T. Alderweireld 8-10 million.
L. Digne. 6-8 million.
T. Ilori. 4-6 million.
C. Eriksen 13-16 million.
K. Honda 8-12 million.
Young keeper?

Loans.
Shelvey (Cardiff). For full season.
Wisdom (Southampton). For full season.
Sterling or Suso (Hull). For full season.

If Reina leaves (which I don't want to happen) then we would need two new keepers for next season. If Skrtle left which again I don't think he will. I would like us to go for S De Vrij, he has signed a year extension, but if we are in need of a further centre half then he would fit the bill.

Jonesred

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So you'd pay 8-12m for Honda when he is out of contract in January? And getting rid of Wisdom seems bizarre to me. Love that you've decided what teams will want our loan people - who exactly is Wisdom replacing in the Southampton back line?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 May 2013 20:23:55
I know it's unusual but maybe because he's a legend, the number is not that common and in light of his foundation we should retire Carragher's number 23. What do you guys think?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Actually I like the idea of retiring a player's number, as occurs in North American sports. They display them from the rafters, which is a suitable reminder of the team's history and to the current players.

It would be great to see the names of Dalglish, Keegan, Kennedy, St John, Liddell, Busby, Paisley, etc. , within the stadium. It would certainly send a shiver through my spine to look up and see such esteemed names adorning Anfield. Maybe one tyo consider. What do others think?

Agree0 Disagree0

Nah, if we haven't retired numbers for players previously who have won more with the club, such as Alan Hansen or Phil Neal who were both multiple league winner (just for an example) then why should we start now?

JC has been one of the best servants for Liverpool since the Premiership era but I don't care for that retiring the number fad, not unless it were in light of a tragic accident. Then I at least understand the rationale behind it, but with Jamie Carragher it's not needed.

He did his job and never went missing or looking for an easy ride, using his exemplary attitude and never give up attitude as an example for young and old a like coming into the club is high praise enough. Footballing posterity will fondly remember Jamie Carragher, that's all any footballer can ever ask for, that's their immortality.

BCDI.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think retiring jc's number would be so bad as its 23 but if jamie deserves it then why not the rest you mentioned and lots you didn't as the older players on the list all wore 1 to 11 and some the same number how do you retire jerseys decide who was the best number 7 retire it with his name on and snub another fantastic number 7 and eventually you would have players wearing numbers 108 or 148 because we retired all the low numbers

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think retiring the number is the best thing to do really. I think he's immortalised that number, and as such should be handed to the next player who shows as much talent as what Carra did. I think that'd be a good mark of respect for Carra and also be passing on to a different generation of footballer. Maybe that's sentimentality but I think it'd be pretty cool.

JFT 96

JP

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't have a problem with players wearing high numbers because lower numbers have been retired. I would also like to see the stands named after the true greats such as Shanks, Paisley and Dalglish; maybe one to consider with the upgraded stadium. I am not usually in favour of the Americanisation of football but in this case, I do think that US sports can teach us a thing or two.

Agree0 Disagree0

Who wore the No23 shirt before Carragher? Yes Robbie Fowler. Now let's get another legend to wear the 23 shirt!

Before we all ride off into the sunset of the close season I wonder whether we should do a stats comparison between Liverpool, WBA and Swansea.
Why those clubs in particular?
Well earlier in the season there were quite a few people on here comparing Brendan Rodgers' management of the club unfavourably with how (well) Clarke and Laudrup were doing.
Well we only finished one place ahead of WBA
but scored 18 more goals and gained 12 more
points. For Swansea - we are two places better off,
scored 24 more goals and garnered 15 more points. Do any of those posters want to take this
opportunity to comment?

Yes we are above them, but if you compare their resources then both teams have had a much better season than us (Swansea also will be in Europe next season), so I'm afraid your post does not hold

Game of season?
Worst game of the season?
Best goal of the seaon?
Best moment of the season?

For me it would be.

Great compliment a player by insulting a talented young player. Brilliant!

Both of them have the potential to be world class players. Interestingly England are starting to produce really technically gifted players in the last few years especially if you look at the championship. Less midfielders like Frank Lampard and more like Jack Wilshere.

Completely agree with Macca, would be a big mistake letting pepe go. Think the defence will be unsettled with the changes at centre back without changes at gk. Understand he has had a few wobbles in recent seasons but still remains one of the best keepers in the league and his distribution and sweeping is one thing that is key to our style of play. If Reina moves on due to the call of old club Barcelona then we should thank him and wish him well, however if the move is being instigated from our side, i'd question the decision and be interested to know who they are planning to replace him with.
Eds, are there any keepers on the continent you believe we could bring in for the same sort of price (10m quoted)? Begovic, mignolet, mccarthy have been mentioned here, my pick in the perm would be vorm if it came to it but not too well up on the availability of quality in Europe
Cheers {Ed001's Note - there are thousands of keepers out there, many much cheaper. I take it you mean of similar or better quality though, rather than just available for £10m? In which case, I am sure there are, it is just up to the scouts to find the right one for our club.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think we should go for Rafael Cabral £5m is what Santos want for his.

Santos also want Coates we should ask them £1m + Cabral for Coates

or. Cabral + a youngster for Coates

It is the wrong decision to sell Pepe Reina doesn't matter what anyone says reliable keeper and with the players we are buying in now, we are just going to buy another average keeper, ceaser maybe an option I'm not sure I'm just generally disappointed :/

Cheers JJ

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why don't any of the Pepe Reina supporters ever explain why he is only half the player he once was?

Agree0 Disagree0

Have you ever once considered that the player actually wants to leave?

Have you considered the many years of service he has given?

Contract or not, that's Lifein football.

Let him go if he wants to go.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think that the time is right, the writing has been on the wall since Benitez left and the Spanish influence is coming to an end. Just remember keepers are NOT irreplaceable.

Agree0 Disagree0

No one is irreplaceable. I feel that Carra should have been replaced a long time ago and that's not being disrespectful it's just my opinion. I appreciate the job he's done for the club. I was standing at the ground earlier clapping him and wishing him all the best. I now feel we should get a Lawrenson type Centre back to replace him as the team should be able to attack from a higher position up the park.

Agree0 Disagree0

There was a time when Reina was irreplaceable, I think that's what confuses fans. But he's very replaceable now a day's, evident by the quality of keepers out there.
I would personally keep him but I think he's replaceable if we're getting 10M for him. That's top top money. We'd be silly to turn it down.

Good win, which is exactly what we wanted to sign off the season (even though it should have been 2-0 and we where back to our usual selves in front of goal). You can see the improvement in the way we play, and the individual players we have on the pitch. both much better than last season. Next season will depend on who we get rid off and who we bring in this summer. I predict a 5th place finish which is still an improvement. let's hope suarez stays, and we replace the players leaving with more quality. Carragher you are a legend and I always emulated how you played in defense for my club. Your the best defender Liverpool has had in a long time along with hypia. I will always remember what you did for my lfc. Jordan ibe, you beauty. What a prospect he is going to be along with the likes of suso, sterling and wisdom. Coutinho is a world class player, IMO. I cannot wait to see how brazil play in the world cup with the likes of coutinho, neymar, oscar, lucas moura etc in the squad. Now. the long wait for next seaon begins.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Never would happen

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok, so Chelsea consider him the future of their attacking line and after 1 season in Belgium with no PL football paid £17m for him. So by a rough rule of thumb, factoring in the amount he's scored this season in the PL, additional experience he has, Chelsea's lack of any need to generate funds ever and the slight embarrassment of what happened the last two times strikers past between us (Torres being a £50m flop and Sturridge becoming a £12m star) - I'd say that our 'bid that could be worth it' would need to be about £55m to be listened to at all

Nice one ed. I personally think Borini is a fantastic player. If you watched in the begining of the season the poor kid was making great runs, he needed a countinho to pass it to him. So if we improve all the positions that need improving, and bring in a decent keeper we have no chance of top 4? Get a grip! Pepe is one of the best keepers in the league over the years he's been playing for us, but he has been so inconsistent the last few years, it just seems like his heart isn't in it anymore. Better to let him go and bring in someone who will play their ass off week in week out

Agree0 Disagree0

We don't have the money to buy another keeper of that calibre. we need four more players of quality to push on and that doesn't include a keeper. and if we've got £20/25 million to spend we don't need to waste half of it on a good keeper. imo

against fulham henderson played in midfield from the left cutting inside, that's eriksen position at ajax. it would make sence if we try to buy him. br wants the left back to defend and push forward. we can play lucas gerrard coutinho eriksen in 1 midfield. johnson and enrique will be defending wingers. we need a strong defender next to agger and he needs pace, essential in br system. I think with the our system we don't need a out and out striker suarez. sturridge/borini should me enough. maybe another right winger with goals in him would help. 1 or 2 center back eriksen and a winger and we could be right up there next season. malta

Reina's played well enough since Christmas, but he did make mistakes before that and obviously some fans think there are better goalkeepers out there. And we've had "Reina is going to Athletico/Barca" for at least the last three summers, so this is nothing new.

Personally, unless we sign Begovic as a replacement, I'd be much happier with Reina than anyone else we're realistically going to get.

Wonder who'll be the new vice-captain if he does leave though? Somehow I think Suarez sabotaged his chances (even if he does stay). So Agger? Lucas?

It took us 20 years to find a decent keeper - remember that. You won't realize what we have lost until Pepe isn't there. Terrible decision from the board

His throwing isnt great either, so a new GK wouldn't have much to live up to in terms of footballing ability IMO}

Update on Eriksen, apparently he will sign a new contract at ajax unless lfc or bvb make a 15m bid for him in the next month. A source close to him said "one minute there is concrete interest from Liverpool and they're ready to make a bid, the next minute they're taking their time". What are the eds thoughts on this and do you eriksen is the right player for us if we can pull it off? thanks {Ed052's Note - I dont have any thoughts. He is probably avaliable, not too expensive, we're interested and he cannot get the Spanish move he wants. I still think it very unlikely}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think he's interested in joining Liverpool? Think he would jump at the chance of joining spurs (boyhood team) or united but I think spurs have lost interest and united aren't interested either! So anyother move to the prem would be a quick stepping stone to spain!!

21 year old goalie as first choice at a club that has the expectation level of Liverpool and the associated pressure that brings. Yeah, you'll have to excuse me for not being too confident about that.

For every Joe Hart who comes in at a young age and thrives, there are 5 goalies who are nearly destroyed by it. Paul Robinson & Scott Carson never lived up to their early promise, for example.

Even De Gea, a supposed goalkeeping prodigy, took over a season to firmly see off Lindegaard and he still hasn't convinced everybody.

You have to respect Eriksen for his comments. That's no nonsense! He said last night that if LFC don't offer the 15m within a month he is signing a new contract. He says Liverpool haven't followed up their previous interest. I think with Reina moving on Liverpool have probably got distracted and have other priorities. We should definitely sign him though! Good young player! If you had him and Coutinho in the same team it would be crazy! {Ed002's Note - Eriksen's comments?}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Eriksen didn't say any of that, the article you're referring to says it was a 'source close to Eriksen', which in translation means 'a lazy journalist trying to drag a story out to fill pages', or at least that's my look on it.

I know next year is your year. But I thought i'd just offer an honest, neutral and unbiased view of your team. There a number of positives and negatives and I think you've still got a lot of work to do. Ok let's start at the back. Reina used to be in the top three keepers in the league. But the last couple of seasons he's been making a lot of errors. Is he in decline? I think its because your back up keepers over the years have been poor so he knows there's no challenge and his place is guaranteed and so he's become complacent and the errors have crept in. Full backs, well personally I don't rate either of them. Enrique goes missing a lot of the time and I just don't think he's Liverpool quality. Johnson is good going forward, quick pacy, but lacks a final ball. Defensively his positioning is suspect. Your centre backs Agger and Skrtel are a good partnership but a little injury prone. Unfortunately you don't have good backup. So bit of work to do there. Now midfield is interesting. I like Lucas, does a job and is effective. Struggled a bit to start and had a bad injury but is a good player. I also like Joe Allen again does a job but I think he needs to use the ball better but needs the right players around him. Gerrard, well what can be said. If only he was a few younger eh? You do need to find the replacement to replace the midfield goals. And its not Henderson or shelvey. God their bad players. I think Henderson is struggling with price tag and expectation. He'll have a few good games against weaker teams but is he really top four quality? Same with shelvey. Coutinho looks a good signing. Excited by seeing more of him. Downing I know all about, good when he's a big fish in a medium to large pond but goes missing a lot, can't hack being just a fish in a massive pond. You do need a couple of wingers. Upfront then. Borini, odd signing struggled to score in italy, I think he's poor. Sturridge is good signing but has to be played right. Which is upfront on his own as the newcastle and fulham games have shown. Suarez, well, one of the best three players in the league and one of the ten best in the world. But the guys a lunatic. When he wants to play he's worth the ticket price. But his antics have shamed your great club in the eyes of a lot of fans. I think, if he's not driven out, you need to get him in therapy. I think overall you have the makings of a good squad. Still short of top four but getting closer. Five good signings and if you can sort LS out then who knows. VTID

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Another tool that wants Gerrard replaced!

Why replace Gerrard?

Was it something like 10 goals and 10 assists this year from Stevie from a much deeper midfield than he has previously occupied, what other player is going to do that?

As May West said AGE is only a number, so what if stevie is 33 in the summer, Giggs is still playing well at nearly 40!

Lets give up with the Gerrard replacements, there are more vital areas that need attention in the Liverpool team.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 May 2013 11:47:02
If you read what the guy put he's clearly not a Liverpool fan. I also think he's right. Yes Gerrard is doing the job now but the club has to think about replacing him long term. Who else is there go midfield that can get double figures each season? Get someone in now who can learn off Gerrard for two seasons before replacing him. As for Giggs just because he's still playing doesn't mean others can. Or should. I think its a mistake for Giggs to play on, I think its a weakness from United.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard's not immortal though is he? He is going to retire at some stage so its correct that we need to find a replacement who can bring the goals from midfield. Although I disagree with the Henderson part, I think he has come on a lot this season and will continue to progress next season again.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am aware the OP is not an LFC fan but there are many here who claim LFC who want Gerrard replaced.

Here are the gerrard replacement scenario's

1. So we find a Gerrard replacement let's says he 19

Gerrard plays on another 4 years the gerrard replacement will be 23 then and unlikely to be at the club unless he likes taking a back seat and a gerrard replacement would surely not like that!

2. We find a Gerrard replacement or more likely what appears to be a gerrard replacement but reallt they are not! (There are no end of immitations - but there is only the one real thing and that's Gerrard himself)

Will we abe able to afford the endless stream of Gerrard replacements?

SAF tried to get the Keane replacement spending over 70M in the process and getting nothing like Roy Keane.

3. We could enjoy the real Gerrard and not look for a replacement as there are none!

Gerrard is a once off player just like any of the great Players LFC have never got another Kenny, never got another Tommy Smith, never got another Steve Heighway, never got another Ian Rush, never got another Robbie Fowler, etc.

Many thought Sissoko now at Newcastle could be the New Gerrard I remember the posts on here having a go at DC for not getting him, Is he the New Gerrard?

Other players will come up and the old will get phased out in time naturally (its not Gerrards time to go yet) looking for a Gerrard replacement is futile and is only an expensive exercise that's ends in failure!

Replacing a player that's playing well just because of an age on his birth Cert. is stupid as Giggs testifies too!

Enjoy Gerrard while we have him it may or may not be a long time before LFC have another home Grown hero.

My guess is that it may be a long time for the a player of Gerrards ability to come from the streets of Liverpool into the team but who knows!

Lots of people who posted on here wanted Kenny gone as mgr. then when Kenny was gone many not all expressed Regret at Kennys departure be careful what you wish for in Gerrards case you might just get it and it may not be what you want!

Enjoy Gerrard and enjoy his time at the club.

No Gerrard replacements are out there if you knew how special Gerrard is then you would realize this!

Agree0 Disagree0

Before Gerrard was used in a deeper role he played just behind Torres, does no one think that ability wise Coutinho might be the long term replacement?

I see the midfield 3 being Coutinho just behind Sturridge/Suarez, Lucas as the holding mid and Henderson being the box to box midfielder.

People are going to disagree, but I don't care. It's my opinion after all.

So what if Pepe is leaving - just another player who can and will be replaced.

It's a job for these players, take the money and when they've had enough off they go. the majority will never have the love and passion for the club like the fans do.

So if he wants to go then get rid - don't need non committed players here -!like I've always said never get attached to players, they are simply commodities.

There is an exception SG and JC. JC an immense player for the club, who gave it all. Not technically the best, but committed, passionate and never let us down- JC we salute you, but in time you too will be replaced.

Players come and go it's the nature of football, no point crying over players that want out or retire.

Macca,
Id have to say i'm not sure about Reina going. Depending on his replacement its a good move for both parties. If we manage to replace him with a good keeper then fair enough, because I think Reina has lost a bit of his drive and needs a new challenge. If however we would have to make do for a year because our budget and requirements mean that a top keeper would perhaps be off our list of things to do.
On Reina, how much do you think we could still generate off his sale?

With chelsea, united, everton and city all in managerial changes I think we could sneak in! however, we need to buy 2 quality defenders that are leaders ad are vocal. I think spurs will lose bale s won't be looking anywhere near top4, nuless they buy some insane replacement (which is unlikely as players usually need a season to settle). I think united will struggle to retain the title. My predictions for next season are:

1) Chelsea

4)United

Alex McCarthy. Why not? He's young and talented, and will only get better
Pepe Reina was a good keeper but hasn't been at the races for the last 2 seasons, and as much as I like him, we need to replace him, and I hope we do

The issues are more with the defence. If we get the right players here, we will be in good shape come the start of the season
I think as lot of money will be generated by sales, plus whatever the clubs budget will be. I also think with that in mind, we could be looking to bring in 5 - 6 players in the summer

I seriously think we will be top 4 next season. Consistency is the key, and if we can turn all those draws into points, we won't be far away from being a Championship winning team. Results against the so called "Smaller clubs" will be key

My money is going on Liverpool to finish top 4 and my prediction for top 6 is this;

1. Manchester City
2. Chelsea
3. Liverpool
4. Manchester United
5. Arsenal
6. Tottenham

David Moyes has a massive task on his hands as it won't be easy replacing SAF, or keeping United in the top 1 or 2 places

Chelsea will be strong but I see City as being just a bit stronger. Who knows though, with all the comings and goings in the summer, it leads to a very interesting transfer window

If BR gets the players he wants, and early, I am very optimistic we can have a great squad ready for battle

Consistency is the word. If we have that, there's no telling where we could end up. Next season the Championship is up for grabs for 3 or 4 teams, and I believe Liverpool to be one of them!

If Reina was to be sold to Barca (with or without Tello involved in the deal). Would we consider going for Barca's other target, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen? I've been a fan of his for a good 2 years, always hoped we'd sign him. Any chance we would?

Also with the main rumours/targets being Eriksen, Illori and Tello (with the less consistent rumours revolving around Zouma, Papadopoulos and Digne). Would their be enough money to buy a decent striker such as Gameiro? This includes the money raised from sales such as Carroll and perhaps Skrtel. I just think there needs to be just one final Striker. If Suarez went on another mad-one then we'd be left with just two Strikers in Borini and Sturrdige and The top teams seem to have at least 3 quality Strikers and I would say we are just one quality striker off of that.

If Pepe leaves I think the club should look no further than Pantilimon as his replacement. Failing that I would look at Nikolay Mihaylov, Julio Cesar, Martin Stekelenburg, Kasper Schmeicel and Alex McCarthy (only because he had the mother of all games against us). I would love to see Courtois arrive on a season loan but I can't see Chelsea sanctioning that and obviously there are a clutch of talented German keepers out there. If he goes, he goes - he has had a number of indifferent performances for us in the last couple of seasons although replacing him and Carra in the summer will be difficult to get right. If we could somehow get Tello as part of the deal then I think it would be incredible for Liverpool but sadly I can't see that materialising.

Gutted if Pepe goes. Now people will find out first hand how difficult it is to replace a top goalkeeper and let's not kid ourselves Pepe is anything less. We had our chance to make it right when Kenny came in and bought dross and we had a second chance when replacing Kenny with B-Rod. The lad has fell out of love with LFC, but I tell you this, every single doubter of his ability or proclaimer of him being past his sell by date will eat their words time and time again over the next 18 months, if they are intelligent enough to see the bigger picture that is.

I hold a slightly differing view from you on the bigger picture, does that make me 'unintelligent' then? If Reina were to leave, it would be a big hole, however the PL has a plethora of great keepers at the moment, Germany is producing some fantastic keepers too. If we could replace Reina with a young, hungry keeper then I don't see it causing an enormous difference. Reina is fantastic on his day, but he has still been shaky these past couple of seasons. It would be sad to see him go as he has become part of the norm at LFC, but performance wise, I wouldn't see it doing us too much harm if we were to sign a good, young keeper which is entirely plausible. In fact, it might even be a positive. Who knows.
