GREAT result tonight. Manchester United progress to the next round of CL. Keep the premiership's co-efficient up so we retain our 4 places.
More importantly is the future of Davie Moyes Football Genius (DMFG). The last thing we want is for him to get sacked before he's finished his work.

There you go then gents, Utd through to last 8 of CL. I know most would say they won't win it but I can't imagine the pain if they do win it somehow and we finish 4th. We all know what that would mean. Disaster.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If we keep winning, we will not be playing for fourth.

So what United do or not will be irrelevant.

Who would everyone realistically like to see come in at LB for next season? Seems to be an area that BR will look to strengthen in. No point talking about Shaw, Moreno seems Madrid bound and Ed02 reckons Ricardo Rodriguez is unlikely at this point. Anyone else?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The only one I am aware of declared interest in is Ryan Bertrand but I suspect he will be heading elsewhere. It was suggested earlier that Sporting Lisbon's Rojo could well be a player Liverpool have been looking at but people would need some convincing that he is better than what the club already has, and he is effectively a CB who can play at CB.}

Wow you don't come across many CB's that can actually play Cb. Pretty Impressive!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Occasionally he plays at LB as well.}

Bertrand - back to Chelsea or elsewhere?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Elsewhere.}

19 Mar 2014 23:40:27
Do you see Caner Erkin as a possibility, Ed02?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I see it as unlikely but possible.}

19 Mar 2014 23:40:15
Ed02 is Bertrand likely to make his move to Aston Villa permanent?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - They would like to do that.}

I wouldn't be surprised to see BR go shopping for a LB in Swansea. Ben Davies looks a cracking player but has (I think) recently signed a new contract and will probably have a nice price-tag that may scare potential suitors away.

But Neil Taylor I would have thought is a strong possibility. Prior to his leg break he was highly rated and played very well for Team GB in the Olympics, and is also very well known to BR. He's now back from his injury and has been playing well for Swansea again, but with them having Davies, Taylor could be an option? What do you think Eds?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - personally I wouldn't touch either, neither of them have shown anything like the level I would want. Davies is likely to be expensive, Taylor has shown nothing since coming back from injury. I suppose it is possible Rodgers does turn to him, but it would seem unlikely, not when we are looking to European football.}

Appreciate your input Ed001. I'm surprised you don't rate Davies? I think the boy has a lot of potential, going forward the lad looks just as good as Shaw, ok he gets caught out of position sometimes, but given how things have gone downhill at Swansea this season (nobody has had a great season in comparison to last year) and his age I'm sure BR could teach him to pick his runs better.

Who do you think we will go for and (realistically) who would you like to see us sign for LB?

Cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Davies is lazy, his attitude reminds me of Johnson on a bad day and he lacks stamina. I watched him in one match and by 85 min he could barely stand up.
I would like us to get Moreno, but I don't know who we will go for right now. It will depend a lot on where we finish.}

I think in Davies' defense he is a young lad playing in only his second season in the Prem and he has had to play virtually every Swansea game for 2 years due to Taylor's injury, I think any young lad would be a bit jaded having played how much he has had to, look at Stirling last year after half a season, he was done for physically!

That's not possible, nobody is lazyer than Johnson!

Isn't Moreno due to sign for Madrid?

On a different note and out of curiosity do you think there would be any possibility of us signing Coleman? Without doubt the best RB in the Prem! I would love us to stop trying to find £8m bargains this Summer and go balls-out and put £25m on the table to Everton.

All season we have been holding back on the title talk. I know we are doing fantastic, but let's keep our feet on the ground here. There are still 27 points to play for. That's 9 difficult games still ahead of us.

Let's just hold back on the title talk until we are still in the race with 2/3 games to go.

Still a lot of hard work to do.

I was watching a show yesterday on which dean sturridge(daniel's uncle) appeared. He said daniel told him that stevie g has been telling the squad they can win it for a couple of months. It's only now that stevie has come out and talked about our chances in an interview.
The captain believes it and I'm sure stevie must be looking in the eyes of players and reminding them what they are playing for. I think we must be a little more optimistic and BELIEVE.

As much as I'd love United to go out tonight, if they win then it'll give them confidence and hopefully help to take some points of City.
These are all huge ifs as United are extremely poor.
Or maybe they go out, Moyes gets sacked, new manager comes in and gets a couple of wins as is initially customary with a change of personnel?
What's everyone else's thinking?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If he does get sacked I doubt they will appoint someone that quickly as they will have nothing to play for

Listen. You've all got it wrong. David Moyes is one of Britain's most promising managers. He has had a tough time this season managing an ageing squad.

I've been supporting Liverpool for 40 years. I begrudgingly recognise he is a legend in the making. It hurts me to say but I guarantee (and am willing to bet my house) that he will be manager of Manchester United for at least three seasons.

I think Gerrard will retire if we win the league. Anyone think so?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No chance. And miss CL next year? He's certainly not going to retire before his contract is up and before a WC.

Agree0 Disagree0

In a word, no

Agree0 Disagree0

Not a chance, he's looking in good shape and I think the new role will preserve his chances of playing longer.

Agree0 Disagree0

If he can make that position his own, and keep improving tactically/positionally then I think he has another 2 good seasons in him.

Its very important that he has players around him with lots of energy who can do his running for him!

It wouldn't suprise me if he retires from international football (after Brazil) to prolong his club career though.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Mar 2014 22:12:08
No he won't, he lives and breathes the club and, as was shown in Suarez's interview when he said Stevie talked to him and asked him not to leave, he is just as important off the pitch as he is on it.

p.s. I know that wasn't the reason Suarez stayed before Ed02 corrects me but to have a player so well respected in world football is important in itself and could be crucial in retaining/acquiring top talent.

Juan Mata must be the first player to change clubs because he didn't want to play in the Champions League

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Mar 2014 15:40:03
TBH, chelsea are indeed pretty lucky to have 37 mill in the bank, Mata looks completly a shadow of his former. He is being constantly played out of position and and looked terrible in the wings, He is crying out to play in the middle, But then Moyes would have to drop either Rooney or RVP-Impossible.

Agree0 Disagree0

Moyes should have thought of that before paying 37m if he isn't going to play him as a 10.Sooner or later he would have to

Agree0 Disagree0

Hardly impossible. It should be an easy decision to drop forwards who are not scoring. The hardest bit is which one?

Agree0 Disagree0

Van Persie, by a mile, I would think Irish Rover. For me an interchangeable attacking quartet of Rooney, Kagawa, Mata, and Januzaj would be far better than playing with Januzaj and Mata hugging the lines, a midfield two of Carrick and Fellani, and two up top of Rooney and Van Persie who are simply not on the same wavelength. There is zero creativity in the midfield from that formation.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Mar 2014 21:19:14

I would have picked Rooney myself. (Posted just after RVP scores a hat trick) ;-)

Banter please eds

Moving away frm our unbelievable season I was wondering if a little bit of fantasy footy could be had?

Who & what do people see happen come summer?

I understand new player will come in & players will be moved out but I for one am not sure what I want to happen never mind what will happen, I mean the general feel on here seems to suggest a lb, cdm & a wide left forward? But correct me if i'm wrong aren't those current positions covered by flanno(most passionate hard wrkin lb in the country at the minute)
Cdm, stevie gerrard(true leader of men who is the most consistent set piece taker in the country who is in double figures in assists & goals frm a 'deeper lying role'
Lfw, sterling(lookin like a genuine world class player with the guidance of rodgers who is proving many of his critics wrong, me included that size doesn't matter as long as u got the skill & pace to go with it.
Now I understand that more games might be played next year with the possibility of champs league, but not ONE of these players deserves to loose there place if we get there they all would have contributed a heck of a lot come end of the season & would maybe feel a bit pissed if they see us buying ready made replacements for them.
Plus I forgot to mention there 'rotated' players
Enrique-lucas-coutinho. I jus can't see more players in those positions coming in with out any of the 6 mentioned going out.
But hey only 1 guys opinion keep.up the fine wrk.eds u guys have genuinely got the most addictive site I go on.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It is not a case of these players losing their place, it is a case of having more players to choose from.

This season if a player played every single game for us they will have played in 43 games. With Champions League and hopefully longer cup runs this could be 60-65, that's 40% more games.

These players have performed amazingly over 43 games, who knows how they would have performed if they had 65 games to play for the season.

Currently I would say we have 16 players to choose from to make our starting 11 the rest are just not up to starting regularly yet. To be a success on 4 fronts you need at least 24/25 players to choose from who you would trust to come in and do a good job.

It is about having a squad full of players who are good enough, not just an amazing 11 and some potential.

I hate them both, but look at players like Young and Nani at United. Were not picked every week, were not even in the squad every week, but when Fergie needed them, he was confident enough to drop them in and they would play how he wanted them to.

That is what Fergie built at United a squad of 25 not a team of 11, and Rodgers is trying to do the same, which I think is 100% right.

Agree0 Disagree0

Depends on ins and outs but for me would like us to bring back Borini, Suso, and then loan out the likes out Coady, Ibe, & Ilori (or sell toure and keep rotate Ilori) to let them get plenty of game time. Much as I like him (dunno why) think assaidi should be sold with Robinson, reina and would sell Johnson if possible and try get Montoya and another LB (not a clue who tbh). Also dunno what to do about Kelly, always liked him but flanno has taken over, maybe try at CB or sell.

Then buy a left forward (want kono or griezmann, need cover/comp for places). If money is left over then maybe a CM, someone like bender from bayern. and think that would keep us sorted!

so would have
Forwards/Wingers: Saurez, Sturridge, Borini, Kono or Griezmann, Sterling, and Ibe/Texeira
Midfield: Gerrard, Allen, Henderson, Lucas, Coutinho, Suso, and Bender (or whoever)
CB: Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, Ilori, Kelly, Wisdom
RB: montoya, flanno, mclaughlin, + Kelly/wisdom can cover
LB: New Lb, Enrique, + Flanno could cover

and think we'd be more then sorted

would spend a fair bit getting these players in but selling Reina, Assaidi, Robinson, Toure, + Johnson could get us 15+ million

Hi mate. I was asking myself this the other day as well. I think Enrique is gone in the summer now to be honest. His knee injury has kept him down and out for a long time and 27/28 year olds don't usually recover from such injuries. He is now considered to be injury prone, and although he is a good player, he isn't so good that it's worth paying him 12months wages for 2 months of service. Unless he comes back in the next 9 games and cements his place in the team, I think he will be sold. Cissokho will likely return to Valencia and not be signed.

You are correct, Flanno has been excellent there. However He is still young and needs competition if he is to continue to play well. I don't see Robinson making the grade now and Brad Smith is not ready (and in my opinion will develop into more of a left sided midfielder anyway). So a left back is definitely a must for me depending on Enrique producing a miracle comeback or not.

Regarding the defensive midfeild position; In January I was desperate for us to sign a holding player. Lucas got injured again and Allen is a square peg in a round hole. I thought Gerrard was an Octagon in a rectangular hole until recently! Gerrards natural game made it look near impossible for him to play there. However he is adapting to the role well and although he doesn't bring the same stability and composure Lucas does, he is a more steely and volatile option. He can turn defence to attack in a single swing of his boot. When you have the likes of Coady, Baio, Pelosi and Rossiter all knocking on the door for that position as well, I don't see the need to sign a defensive midfielder any more. Gerrard and Lucas should be able to rotate there.

As far as a wide forward goes, I think you are generalising what we need to much. We don't need a left sided forward. We need another versatile option to play across the front 3. They need to compete with Sterling, and provide cover to Suarez/Sturridge. We currently have Sterling, Aspas Suarez, Sturridge, (Coutinho) and Moses. Moses will not make a permanent move, but we have Assaidi, Suso, Borini and Ibe returning from loan as well as Dunn, Sinclair, Peterson and Yesil. I think Assaidi is likely to get the bullet and Ibe needs another season on loan so one more senior option will likely be sought. I don't know whether Aspas will be loaned out or sold, but its very unlikely he'll sit on the bench for us next season. Its a squad game though so try not to get too caught up in the "well that's the end of Sterling" frame of mind.

For me, the only position we NEED right now is competition for Mingolet. Jones is a great back-up but he is never going to push Mingolet for the starting role. All the other signings depend on who leaves if you ask me. For example we could improve on certain players. Those players need to be moved on first though.

I would like to see Suso and Borini in particular get more of a chance next season though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks guys a lot of different views on this, I jus can't see us spending(wasting) another 15/20 mil on squad type players Like aspas & alberto jus to sit on the bench? i'm not entirely sure 'rotation' as i'm sure players like suarez studge & the rest of the lads will wanna play as much as they can & I can't see any new players i.e kono or whoever they are will b happy to sit on the bench as much as aspas & alberto. Should b an interesting summer let's all hope we happy come september 1st.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey east midlands, actually agree on a lot you said apart from Jones being a great back up, he is far from it to be honest. I know its a tricky situation getting a good enough back up keeper who is happy to sit on the bench until called for but we do need an up-grade on Jones I am afraid to say, he is a good professional but not a good enough keeper in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

We just need 3 or 4 quality signings to take our team to the next level. We should go after a winger midfielder striker and a lb

Eds and other members. Your opinion please.

With Sakho and Lucas back. Would you change a winning formula? Myself I would keep the same team and keep them on there toes knowing if thy under perform then they will be replaced. But at the moment Agger and Skrtel are looking reliable again and Gerrard is a different holding player than Lucasqith his distribution.
Also I would keep Raheem there as he is playing great.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why fix something that's not broken. We are doing great with the current "formula" and we also seem to have a good backup options to switch it up a little when necessary. I say keep the current squad and let other fight for the starting place for some healthy competition.

Agree0 Disagree0

Simple. Keep the same team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Give Lucas and sakho time off the bench and ease them back in slowly. See how they perform. They might not get starting positions regularly until next season now with it being so close in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Let's remember that Joe Allen got a start against Man United at Old Trafford, and helped dominate the midfield possession with Henderson doing a similar task.

Rodgers doesn't mind changing and tweaking his starting line up, if he's going to do it when going to Old Trafford as the bookies favourties to get a result, then he'll no doubt feel perfectly at ease making a midfield change or defensive one going to Cardiff's ground again, as the bookies favourites to get the result. Likewise he'll not doubt be happy to settle with a winning formula if it's viable against Cardiff's layout, David Marshall has been phenomenal between the Cardiff sticks at times this season, getting a decent amount of work at his end of the pitch though.

I've just had a look see at Ole Gunnar's formations since he's been in the Prem as a manager, so I thought i'd type out the formation he's favoured since he's been in the job. (Only about ten games or so)

The Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar used a 5-4-1 formation when going away to Everton and he almost scrapped out a point losing late on to a Seamus Coleman goal 2-1.

Cardiff played hosts to Fulham and beat them 3-1 and Ole Gunnar preferred a 4-4-2 formation on the day.

When Cardiff went to Tottenham Ole Gunnar used a 5-3-2 formation, Cardiff lost 1-0 Soldado managed to score from open play!

Cardiff played hosts to Hull and Ole Gunnar used a 4-4-2 formation and Hull scored their fourth goal by the 67th min, Jelavic got two on the day.

Against Wigan in the F.A Cup Ole Gunnar went for a 4-2-3-1 formation and Wigan took an early lead. Cardiff pegged one back and then Wigan went on to win 1-2 at Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff played out a 0-0 draw with an inspired David Marshall in the posts for Cardiff, Ole Gunnar decided on a 4-4-2 in that match.

Cardiff went two Swansea and Ole Gunnar played a 4-5-1 and held on in the first half but got played off the park in the second half, 3-0 to Swansea.

Cardiff played hosts to Norwich, Ole Gunnar's team formation was a 4-2-3-1 and although Norwich took a very early lead Cardiff managed to pull back the game and win it 2-1 with Bellamy being hailed as the second half difference.

Cardiff went to United and got beat 2-0 goals in both halves, Cardiff played a 4-5-1.

Cardiff went to Bolton in the 3rd round of the F.A Cup and got an away win with the sub Frazer Campbell getting the only goal, Gunnar's formation was a 4-4-2.

Cardiff went to City and battled bravely in defeat losing the game 4-2, Cardiff's formation was a 4-4-1-1.

Ole Gunnar's first home game in charge of Cardiff was against West Ham and used a 4-3-3 with Noone, Frazer Campbell and Odemwinge in attack and lost the game 0-2. Carlton Cole scored for West Ham!

Ole Gunnar's first game in charge of Cardiff was against away at Newcastle. Newcastle took a late lead on 73 mins and Cardiff managed to comeback and score two late goals with Noone and Frazer Campbell, Gunnar used a 4-4-2.

Just a question for everyone out there.

With 9 games remaining now are we in a better position to win the title than we were after we beat the mancs 4-1 in 08/09 season.

I remember believing then that we may win the title this year, however I think we are in a better position with 9 games to go this season but i'm not as confident.

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

For me, the aim always been to qualify for next season's CL, and I'm not talking about 4th; has to be 3rd or better to go straight into the group stages. That saying - it's not over till it's mathematically impossible for the spuds, mancs and the bitters (yes! they are still in the fight for top 4) to catch us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Singred if we win next game. then we are 12 points ahead of spuds. with 8 games to play. that's 24 points to win with the 12 points ahead we only need 3 more wins mathematical to keep us infront of spuds but then everton might have a chance *lol*.

Agree0 Disagree0

In 08-09, Manchester United were the only team we had as a direct rival for the tittle. Chelsea, Arsenal and the rest were struggling to stay with us and Man Utd.

This season, there are 4 teams all going for the title. This season is harder IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

Top 4 will all get over 80 pts I reckon and 4 points will separate all 4

Hi eds do you know if we are currently negotiating a new deal for Brendon he's a revelation this season much can be said that suarez and sturridge have got us were we are but Brendon is the type of manager that looks like we can win something under and that he can make ordinary players look like top players for example flanagan last season looked like a player destined for a life in the championship but now he looks like he will own the RB slot for the next ten years amazing turn around and the same for henderson who now looks like he will play a massive role for england in Brazil. i'm sick of everyone asking for huge buys when we have an academy like ours, Barca didn't get were they are today by buying there way to the top they play the barca way with the own academy graduates.
Please share your opinions lads

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know what the plans are regarding his contract at this time. I think it is pretty certain that he will achieve the goal of CL qualification this year, but it will be a tough ride for the club being in Pot 4 assuming they get through any pre-qualification. I would think the board will be looking to retain him.}

Pot 4 would mean, we would ahve to face 3 tough opposition from 3 different league ouside england.

Quote from BR.

"Once you put your ideas in place and once the players start to crack it then we will have success. Money can't buy that, " Rodgers told members of the media.

"Teams spend a billion quid and it does not guarantee anything.

"We will be in the market for good and top players but there is more to it than that."

It would appear, as our Eds have been saying since the turn of the year, that there will be no massive wholesale change to the team.
Just top players in areas we are weak in (Mainly on the left IMO) and maybe cover for our fantastic strike force.
With the way some of our loan players have been performing this season this will bulk out our squad for next season and maybe 2 or 3 quality addition's in key area's will be enough for us.
We must trust BR in the summer. Back the men in suits to the hilt. And not be coming on here slating them because we have not gone out and made wholesale buys that are not and will not be needed.

Disagree with a CDM coming in Harr. I mean Home Fan,
The way I see it S, G and L.L have that filled. Maybe a left back, an ACM(dependant on what happens with Suso's future) and a LW.
Any other transfers will likely be dependant on players leaving, and wouldn't affect our first team too much anyway.

Not a rumor, but a query. IF (big IF) Liverpool were to win their remaining gmaes and looked like winning the EPL title. would LFC look at 'signing' Jamie Carragher to play off the bench? He had been a long term servant of the club and possibly retired a year to early. Just a thought. not sure if its possible or not

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Jamie Carragher had every chance to be part of this team and decided not to. Why should we risk losing points just so a club legend can get his basically illegitimate medal? Love carra but he messed up not believing in this team.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is possible. It's 5 appearances for a medal in the Premier League. Will we do it? No. I think it would be a very hollow victory for Jamie, and I don't think his character would permit him to do it. I don't think he'd want to take any credit for how we've performed this year.

Think it's already been done mate. I'm sure if we do it Carra will be there but not like that dick ed Terry. Liverpool and carra epitomise class and JT couldn't spell it!

9 games left the way I see it 2 of those will define thy season :-)

He needs 10 games I think plus his pride wouldn't allow him to do so

I very much doubt carra would want a medal he didn't earn I no he deserves it but let's win it first b4 we stress who is getting a medal

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree fully Dezy. No way would he take a medal that he hasn't earned!

TJred shame on you for saying cara did not believe in the team.

He wanted to go out on top so he retired.

He played for Liverpool all his life. What else proof do you want for him believing in a team?

Park, I suggest you read his interview on regretting retirement before you put shame on me. He said he would only stay another year if he thought we could challenge for the title. And he thought we were only good enough for top 4. Sounds like a lack of belief to me. This is a useless thought anyways; it really benefits no one. Carragher wouldn't want a medal unless he earned it.
