when watching the game on sunday and looked at the bench I have to say it was our best bench for a few years and to think we have some very good players to come back from injury then the bench will look even better, does anyone think because moreno can play against city will GJ be put on the bench, I even think BR will play GJ at right back, for me both manquillo and moreno should start

Believable14 Unbelievable0

They said here today (and confirmed by one of the eds) that GJ has a clause in the contract that if he is fit he has to be in the starting 11 - schoking as this may sound. The bench is better than last year (though not as strong as City - for example their bench for last Sunday game was Zabaleta, Milner, Navas, Agüero, Fernandinho and few others). When Lallana and Markovich are fit and if we bring one more forward we will have a strong bench. I reckon though that the likes of Coutinho and Henderson are really hoping we will bring an Eto kind of player and not a a Cavany because if Lallana and Markovich play to their potential and we bring a big name who has to play 90 mins to justify the money he is paid, them two will be pushed back to the bench.

Agree0 Disagree3

Yeah I would have manquilo and Moreno. I would rather have an untested, debutant than play Johnson against city, they will rip us to shreds through him.

Agree2 Disagree1

I wouldn't be surprised to see Moreno wait another week for his debut. Then again I don't know how well he's settling and how he's doing in training, etc. I just mean your debut against the current champions isn't ideal for a defender.

I'm interested in people's thoughts about Gerrard's effectiveness this season and in the future.

It seemed to me that he wasn't particularly influential in the game against Southampton, but then not many players were very good, and I'm certainly no expert judge.

Is it just that every time he has a poor game everyone rushes to write him off as being too old to play a fast-paced pressing game, or is he really in a slow decline which means that he is gradually losing his ability to influence a game for the full 90 minutes?

Despite his age he put in some great performances last season, and he will again this season- but are those increasingly the exception, and can LFC afford to have a starting player who cannot do the pressing and covering to the extent that is needed to make BR's system work?

Before any haters kick off, I want to add that Gerrard will always be a true club legend, one of the top five players to ever pull on the shirt in my view, and he has given herculean service during a period when the club was being badly managed in every way.

But age catches up with even the very best of players eventually- so when will the difficult time come for him to lose his automatic starting place?
Will that time come before the end of this season, and will BR have the bottle to bench him if he loses fitness?

Believable7 Unbelievable7

Good post, but I think the last word should be form not fitness. If he isn't fit i'd hope Brendan would remove him from the starting 11 with no problem. If he was out of form it may be a more complex situation, with some arguing his presence, experience and leadership warranting a starting berth regardless

Not knocking SG at all but having him play DM is probably a waste. Play Lucas as DM, get SG on the pitch in his old role for 60mins, then bring on Can in his place to start giving him the experience. We need a proper DM in that position, not a converted AM, guessing we won't be buying one.

Agree3 Disagree5

No one in the squad can pass like stevie. His knowledge a d experience is invaluable no matter how old e is . That man is our saviour.

19 Aug 2014 20:06:02
Never write Gerrard off. I think the problem was playing Lucas in there with him. We picked up the pace when Allen came on and had more legs in the midfield. We also played to narrow so Gerrard couldn't pick his long diagonal balls. Gerrard sometimes starts a season off slow but it will not be too long before he grows into it.

If Gerrard is one of the top five players in our club's history I'd like to know who the other four are , apart from Dalglish who no-one will ever come close to in terms of ability .

No player has given more to Liverpool than Gerrard . He is now playing exactly how a 34 year old plays , for some reason we seem to think that he should be exempt from the passage of time , on the basis that he was once a great player . Time catches up with you in all walks of life .

Older readers will remember the finest post-war goalscorer in the English game , a chap by the name of Jimmy Greaves . He retired as a professional at 30 , though he was smoking 40 Woodbine a day at that stage .

I trust Rodgers to channel Gerrard's contribution effectively over the season , but at this stage , in a system that needs " legs " in the engine room , I don't think he should be a starter , just my opinion . What a player though , once referred to by Zinadine Zidane as " the best in the world " .

Agree6 Disagree0

I think this will be his last full season tbh but I expect him to hang around and put in a shift at least next year as well, I just hope we can get him a PL winners medal before he hangs up his boots

Gerrard is without a doubt my absolute hero and were it not for his influence I would have almost none of my best Liverpool memories, or I would, but they would come under worst LFC memories. Having said that, if there was no negative psychological affect on the other players, I would drop him. I think we have to sacrifice too much to accommodate him. He's ideal for the playmaker role, splitting the centre backs, when he have possession. But he just leaves us too exposed without it. It's easy to blame the defence (as they were pretty shite) for the goals we conceded last season, but the main problem was our midfield getting completely bypassed. The amount of times teams found theirselves 2 on 2 or 4 on 4 with our back line was worrying. Especially if your back line has Glen Johnson even remotely near it. And the main problem for me was that when teams broke against us, although Gerrard occupied the space of a midfield enforcer, enforce he did not. Now u could argue that other midfielders should cover for him, which is BR's argument, but I don't think players do this. Why run into cover an area someone is covering. It reminds me of a game (poss Chels at the bridge, can't remember and it's my post so I'm allowing myself not to have accurate evidence to prove myself correct) where Suarez took up a position to block a cross, Johnson (in a rare frame of mind where he fancied doing some defending) was going over to block the same cross, saw Suarez taking up a better position and I think he just followed the overlap instead. Suarez then half-arsed just stuck a leg out as more of gesture than anything else, ball comes across, goal. Cue plastic flags and shit. And for me this is a damn near perfect analogy of why our midfield kept getting over run. Please let me know your disagreements, your entitled to them, even though I'm right ;)

Agree1 Disagree0

To get the best out of him he should be played in his best position. If that's only for an hour every game so be it.

Stevie's legs have been gone for a couple of seasons now, hence him being moved back into a DM role where he has to cover less of the pitch but can still ping a deadly ball and is also available for dead ball situations. I can see him playing maybe 30 games this season, injuries allowing. Hendo & Can are his natural replacements, with Lallana and Markovic hopefully replacing some of his dynamism once fit. He is up there with the best who have ever played for LFC, that is undisputed but I would hate to see him start to get stick from the crowd by playing past his sell by date. Let's hope this is a great season for him and who knows, if we win the league even his last, going out where he belonged all along, on top.

Agree1 Disagree0

JohnnyR, initially it sounds like a good idea to take off Gerrard after an hour of hard effort in every game, but the problem with a player who can only put in 60 mins is that quite often you need to take off a couple of other players because they are just having a bad game and need replacing, and if you are committed to always using one substitution for the same player then you only really have one sub available per game. And if someone gets a bad knock and has to come off, then you have no subs left to make tactical changes.
Like Suarez, you simply can't replace Stevie G like for like, but Henderson and Can between them might provide some of that dynamism and force that was so typical of Gerrard's game five or six years ago.
I don't know how close Stevie is to losing his mojo- he has probably lost some of it already, compared to the incredible player he was from 2000-2009. But how much of that amazing player do people think is still left in him?

Agree3 Disagree0

I think he works better as a lone CDM in a 4-3-3 rather than as part of a 2 man anchor. In the 4-3-3 he has the two other CM's to harry and press while he plugs gaps and can launch attacks from deep.

Agree1 Disagree0

I'm not expert. like a lot of others on here (sorry to break that to you guys).

A few points - when do you want him to press? If he's pressing whose in the DM role you crave to stop the other team attacking?

I think we should ask what do we want from our team - as I see lots of people on here wanting a DM player; is such a player going to press the oppositions full backs of the ball to their DM - no he's not so why should Gerrard do so?

If we are playing a team whose sitting back do you still want a DM in the event of a counter attack or would you prefer us to press and control the opposition?

It's easy to moan about every player (especially one that has a career of being effective somewhere else).

The fact is that Gerrard may not be the best DM in the world but he also has other qualities - if we're so harsh we could ask where the Coutinho of pre-season went against Southampton.

In my opinion he has a role to play - comfortable on the ball; good movement, pace when he needs it, hollywood balls that hit their target, great header of the ball etc.

Unless Xabi turns 23 this year I think he is best suited for our game; he is an athlete and he isn't slow.

With the current recruitment criteria there is no one as yet to take his place - maybe if there was I'd happily consider if he is still 1st team material - for now IMO he is.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard still has a big part to play at LFC. I will concede that the only position he can play now is DM, but there are few players around who can do as good a job as him. Even against Southampton, he was spraying the ball around the pitch as if it was child's play. He may not be a tough tackling DM like Mascherano, but he is improving at his defensive responsibilities, which is impressive for a player his age. In the modern game, a DM must be able to be creative and defensive. Very few players can do both to the high standard as Gerrard.

The only problem with Gerrard playing that position is his stamina/speed. This means that he is best being played in a midfield of 3 with highly energetic players alongside him. Luckily enough, we have Henderson, Lallana, Allen and Can who fit this criteria, but this means that there is little room for both Lucas and Gerrard in the same team.

Shamefully, around Christmas, I was one of the people calling for Rodgers to put Gerrard on the bench, for the same reasons as you are listing now. This all changed after Rodger's masterstroke decision of reinventing Gerrard as a DM. Name be a better DM who can defend AND create as well as Gerrard, for a cheap price. Not to mention his vital leadership qualities. For me, Gerrard still has a few years left playing DM for us. We have far more important positions to address, such as a striker, a goalkeeper and even another winger!

Agree0 Disagree0

We jut bought 9 new players. 2 of them starting, we sold our main striking threat in Luis Suarez who SG linked up well with, it's the first game of the season.A team doesn't gel instantly this stuff takes time

Don't think of SG as a defensive midfielder please, he's not, he's a deep lying playmaker, hence why he's the one that picks up the ball from the centre back to play it forward and drops into the hole when they CB's split. It's just handy he can tackle and win headers.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Aug 2014 00:19:24
At this moment a world class DM playing over Gerrard, with Lallana and Henderson around, would be a massive improvement to be fair. However Gerrard and Lucas are good enough to not be prioritizing a DM signing. I think in most games we'll be seeing a three man midfield or Gerrard or Lucas at DM rotating and then Henderson, Can, Allen, and Lallana in front. Ahead of that will be 3 attackers be it two wingers and a forward or a 10 and two strikers in a diamond formation.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ryan. In the PL alone? Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Fernando, Matic.

Further afield? Lahm, Khedira, Carvalho, Vidal, Javi Martinez.

There's quite a long list of dm's better than Gerrard. Hell Southampton have 2 right now! Then there's Medel and a number of other terriers out there that have more defensive capabilities and instincts than Gerrard.

What were basically doing is saying we have no strikers so let's play Agger up front because he's tall and a legend that can win headers. It's not right. Gerrard simply isn't a defensive midfielder and for the good of the team this needs addressing. I love Gerrard but I love LFC more.

Hi Eds

Do you have an idea of when we can expect to see those players who are/have been injured back and playing? I.E. Lallana, Markovic, Flanagan, Enrique.

I've tried the search function, but not found anything which answers this question.

Thanks in advance

{Ed002's Note - I cannot answer questions about timing. There may have been a press release about injuries today but I have not looked at all.}

Just picked up on the Father/Son theme running through BBC Sport today (after Max Verstappen, son of Jos, has been confiremd as a Torro Rosso driver).

Do we have any kids coming through the system at the moment who have had famous footballing fathers? I know that Ince jr was here until a couple of seasons ago, but anyone still here?

Probably a question for Ed001.?

Of course we do, Alberto Moreno's fathers both played for Liverpool. Gerrard and Xabi Alonso.

Bill Jones, grandson Rob Jones and I believe Robs son, Declan is on the Academy books.

One for Ed002 please if you are around.
Are we in any danger of breaking the UEFA fair play regulations?
We have signed a lot of players this window and are rumoured to be looking for further additions. I know that we have sold Suarez so that will have put a healthy slice towards in comings, but with the fees and wages (I don't want to get in to figures, don't worry) that this years additions will cost, plus the continuing increase of debt against the club, surely this is going to raise a few eyebrows with fifa?
It is expected that we won't spend big after this summer for a while, maybe this won't be through choice. Also, with the young age of the squad and how the team should grow over the next few years maybe the owners are expecting some sanctions?
Am I reading too much in to this?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It depends on several factors. If the turnover this season is not as high as predicted, then there would be an issue there. However, I would think Liverpool have already breached the wage increase limitations. The debt is a business issue but obviously the owners need to manage that, like they need to manage the significant additional debt updates to the stadium will cost (say £150M plus interest and charges). There will be additional revenue from television, from selling naming rights to the stadium etc., but it will be a long haul to get square again. Many folks over estimate the income from the additional 15k seats. Given what has been spent on some players this summer there may not be the profit there when they are sold in the future.}

Why are Chelsea not in the same boat as man city, barca and PSG? They've made one annual profit since 2004.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - (1) The profit was recent but in other years the turnover has been high. (2) Chelsea have been compliant with the Fair Play rules in the three years since they were introduced.}

They are taking a very big risk doing this.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - In the short-term I don't see an issue with UEFA - a strongly worded letter or slap on the wrist. In the longer term the risk is much higher and the stakes are much higher. The business really needs to stay on top of this and I would suggest that when the moves start in respect of the stadium, and there are dealings with banks, sponsors, the press etc. to be done, that the board will recruit someone, possibly with a US or UK banking background, to run that whole side of the business from England (London).}

I seem to remember something about some, if not all clubs being audited over a 2 year period rather than one - obviously that would mean that we could make up the losses in one year over the next however i'm pretty sure we don't fall in that bracket

also aren't stadium costs totally exempt from ffp?

rather leave this to the money men to do the hard work but the finances interest me nonetheless

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is a sliding three year window that allows the owners to contribute to the business in terms of FFP. So the first three years 11/12 to 13/14 are the first window, 12/13 to 14/15 the second and so on.}

19 Aug 2014 16:25:21
Benny

You could clearly see Chelsea transfer deals past an year. They sold Mata and bought Matic and Salah in Jan. They sold Luiz this summer and bought 3 players in Fabrigas, Luiz and Costa. They also sold, KDB and others would be on the list.

The reason they didn't went for Luke Shaw was FFP.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - And Lukaku, Van Aanholt, de Bruyne, Bruma and Ba have also been sold. They have had income from other sources related to transfers as well. These aren't declared in the same way. The reason for not buying Luke Shaw was nothing to do with FFP.}

Ah ok Ed so would I be right in saying that in order for us to run at a loss one year and be safe in terms of ffp we would have to offset that loss equally in the 2 years either side of it in order to break even over all 3 year auditing periods? or am I totally wide of the mark?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No because it is backward facing - the three years is the one just finished plus the two before. Liverpool were at loss the two seasons before last - I suspect they will be in much better shape when the figures for the season just past come out in the spring.}

Harry try not to comment on things you can't comprehend. Since 2004, every annual turn over vs spend, is in the minus. There's more things to running a football club than buying and selling players. I'd imagine only arsenal and united are the only 2 prem clubs to actually turn over more than their spend on a consistant basis.

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Aug 2014 19:47:46
A lot of people might not agree but it is really commendable the way Chelsea have been running the financial side of things the last few years especially transfers where they seem to make a profit by selling backup players and bringing in better players without any significant net spend. I think we would do well to emulate that. Easier said than done though I am sure they will have some of the best people running the show for them

One of the Eds, I think 002 said of Fabregas a while back that he was slow and had no defensive attributes or desire at all.
Given his performance last night I would still agree somehwat, however, in that Chelsea team he will work wonders. With Matic behind him he does not need to be defensively minded, especially as Oscar also covers. And secondly Schurle and Hazard last night did the running to pull players about to gift Fabregas the time and space needed to match his undoubted vision.
My question, Ed, is this. Do you believe Fabregas can be an effective maestro if afforded the extra space and also when allowed to ignore his defensive responsibilities, as Chelsea appear to be doing with him?
I get that it was 'just Burnley' but he pressed high up often enough to matter and was devastating once Hazard and Schurle pulled the oppositon about. I am asking on this site specifically because when we were linked with him one of this sites Eds said he was overrated.

Cheers in advance.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I wouldn't have said that, generally I don't give opinions on players. I am not sure why you are asking this on the Liverpool page. I have no idea what an "effective maestro" is and Liverpool never showed interest in Fabregas. Try the Chelsea page.}

It was Ed1 who said he didn't want Cesc here when there was all the speculation, I remember being a bit surprised by his response.

Agree0 Disagree0

People tend to completely disregard the effect matic has on that team, truly a great player

But I think you will see him come undone against better teams, Coutinho looked like a lost child against Southampton (other than playing out of position) for much the same reason that Fabregas will against better opposition, the players around him didn't create enough space

however, when coutinho (and cesc) have enough time on the ball what they do is magical, once cesc settles into that team he will probably get complacent again but we shall see

Agree0 Disagree1

That is a fine bay to get marooned in . ;0))

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to disagree with you brown jesus, when he was at arsenal he was a top player he won the young player of the year became arsenals youngest captain, he is world class imho, he will get better as the season goes on, he will become one of the most talked about signings this season . that chip over the defence from just outside a crowded box was something we don't have

Agree1 Disagree1

Cesc is a lazy player and completely overrated.
Just like Matic now, he had 2 doneys to do the running and hard work at arsenal in flamini and hleb. I remember the tracker at the time showing both those player cover an average of over 13km's a game most of the time whilst cesc barely ever breached 9.

This is what gave cesc time and space and allowed him not to track back or worry about tackling.
He's good only in slow build up play, which does suit chelsea.

Watch some old arsenal coutner attacks, ask him to turn, face the opposition goal on the counter and play a direct pass, he can't do it, he bottels it, and loks to lay it off to a wide man often breking down the counter attack.

Put cesc in a team without a brilliant defensively minded player he crumbles. Barca often had their most shocking perormances when he was asked to step in for xavi or iniesta, as busquets was w*nk at doing the covering and real wor

Agree1 Disagree0

If they play a team that press well, or matic gets injured, watch cesc be completely inefective

Believable8 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - in this squad? I can't say I know many personally in this squad to be able to judge them. The ones I do have personal experience of them as people I would say no, most definitely not. I really wouldn't want to speculate on the others. I know Suarez was definitely highly motivated by money, but you have to understand that is a lot to do with the conditions he came from. Plus it was not so much about wanting to make money for his own benefit, it was more about providing for his family than just being greedy. Owen on the other hand was just purely greedy.}

He may be greedy who really knows? ( not like Torres! ) I was not present at any of his negotiations but Liverpool fans should be aware of how much he did for us. No Michael Owen goals no Champions league qualification, FA cup etc

There are still lots of posts flooding in about Cavani. He is in my top 3 most over-rated players I have ever seen. I understand that there will have been games where he has done well, but every game I have watched him he been nothing more than ok. My top 3 'raved over' players, that I have never seen be anything more than ok, are;

1.Hulk
2.Wilshere
3.Cavani

Clearly we require another striker, wether it be Borini staying or a.n.other being signed, but I really don't believe that if Cavani does somehow sign he's going to light the EPL up like so many people believe he will.

Believable9 Unbelievable2

Cavani must have had at least one decent game in his life given how many goals he's scored!? Before you start rattling on about serie A being an easy league if that were the case there would be loads of strikers out there with his stats. There isn't though. I agree on Cavani being massively over-rated. Those are great stats but he hasn't been anywhere near what I'd expect when watching him. You know the stats and you think wow he must be great but, for me, he doesn't add much when I've seen him.

I agree with you on Hulk too.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 15:03:56
Willing to admit that given the stats I am a bit of a convert. I have always thought he was overrated, despite only watching about 10-15 games he's played in. However, after seeing 138 goals in 180 games I am willing to admit I am impressed and will retract my opinion based on the opinions of peolle who know more about the player.

Agree3 Disagree0

I don't think Wilshere is overrated at all, only Arsenal fans seem to pipe on about him now, pre injuries he was great and only ever went from strength to strength and looked like a great prospect for english football as a whole but the general consensus nowadays is he isn't good enough to make the first 11 behind ramsey, ozil, cazorla etc and in the england set up barkley, hendo, sterling, lallana, ox

Partly not his fault due to injuries but one only wonders whether they truly hindered him or his attitude has

Hulk was always overrated but Cavani is a weird one, I used to think he was rubbish and massively overrated but like others have mentioned, stats speak for themselves really, i'm on the fence, yet to properly watch him play, only seen the odd game of his but in the world cup his wasnt even in Suarez' shadow he was that far behind

Agree4 Disagree1

States also said allen is the best passer in Europe beating off xavi and iniesta. Does that make allen better than them? Yeah I didn't think so

Agree1 Disagree1

The only difference between Xavi and Allen is nationality - Welsh Xavi represent

Agree4 Disagree0

I just think cavani has been played out of position, in the national team the top player used to be forlan, then it was suarez, but cavanis goals shows he knows where the goal is and the stats don't tell us what type of goals he has scored, was many from pens or free kicks or both, what I remember is I have not seen him score many pens or free kicks, i'm not saying he has not though I just don't know, but one thing that's for sure is he can score no matter where he has been

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 22:33:48
Hulk is cr** and is only rated because of his nickname. Cavani is a goalscorer but his all round play is too average for his price tag. Wilshre couldve been the best English player of his generation,, now he's ruined it IMO and won't be half the player Sterling/Barkley will turn out to be

Hi guys!
If we do end up getting falcao on loan for the season even though it would cost a ridiculous amount. Do you think it's worth it?
If getting him wins us the league or CL then IMO that's money well spent, but very unlikely that that will happen.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Out of Interest Eds, what is the prize money for winning the CL?

only worth it in my eyes if his performances virtually pay his salary and loan fee etc

in my eyes, if you can keep his salary to a moderately acceptable level (which is highly unlikely) it would seem a better investment to buy him rather than loan him and just pray that madrid come in next year or the year after and give us another 75mil

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is based on a number of variables including results in the earlier rounds (€x a point sort of approach). If Liverpool were to win the CL this season their prize money might be in the region of €38 but that would be boosted (doubled for want of a number) by television money.}

Ah ok so you are rewarded financially for your performance in the group stage rather than just on a flat rate of games played? and then obviously prize money and tv rights for each subsequent stage you get to - i'm assuming the figure you mentioned is for the final only and not a cumulative amount from the previous rounds as well? quite a lot really haha, with that in mind I would buy Falcao if we were guaranteed the CL but obviously nobody can make that guarantee

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No, that's the total amount.}

I'll be the first to say if Falcao signs and stays injurd free. We will win the league

Agree0 Disagree1

I'd have to go with beckham as most overrated ever

Agree2 Disagree1

Really, with the way everyone goes on about champions league revenue I had assumed it would be silly money - naive I suppose

also, from memory it fluctuates from year to year but if you could, roughly how much do you get paid for each of the top 4 places in the PL, I found a page a long time ago that listed all 20 but probably outdated now n can't ind it anyway

Jordan Henderson's dad has revealed he kept his cancer battle a secret from him:
"It was a very emotional time when I had to break the news to the family.
"I went to speak to Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool who was very understanding. He gave Jordan time off, and the people at Liverpool were amazing.
"They were very understanding and gave him a lot of support. I said to Jordan that the best thing he could do for me when he got back to playing was try to get man of the match in every game.
"He got it in four of the next five he played - people didn't realise the pressure he was under. I was so proud of him."

Not much chance of it happening but I think if we did sign a cavani or falcoa most people would be pretty damn chuffed. Putting aside the costs etc both are world class strikers who make the difference between first and second. Those that don't agree should think how you'd feel if they turned up at spurs. Arsenal. Chelsea etc. if the owners think they can make it a viable option financially and the manager wants them for his system then bring them on!

Believable10 Unbelievable1

We can't just buy players to prevent rivals from buying them, that's not a good idea.

Agree3 Disagree6

19 Aug 2014 13:33:00
Sean, I think Swish is making the point about the aura of the players themselves. If one of our rivals signed them, we would be jealous of them, is the point he's making, so maybe we should be a bit happier if we sign them.

Agree9 Disagree0

Falcao yes, Cavani no.

Red Rum

Agree4 Disagree5

Sean Ireland I didn't say buy players to stop others having them. You completely missed my point.

Agree2 Disagree0

Your point is they would be great and would lift the club but ignore the costs. If the club ignores the costs then the club will be doomed.

Agree2 Disagree2

Sean did you actually read my post? I said if the owners thought it was a ' viable option financially' that does mean 'ignore all the costs' I don't want to get into wages and loan fees with everyone speculating. which is why I included the above caveat. The main point that if we could afford them most would love to have them in the shirt. That does not translate as' buy players to stop other teams having them even if we can't afford them' ( which seems to be your conclusion)

Agree1 Disagree0

We'll have to agree to disagree as you also said "Putting aside the costs etc" which to me is the club ignoring the costs. Fair enough you did then say if the owners thought it was viable financially but to me you've just said the opposite to your sentence before so we'll just leave it and move on.

Sorry boom we are lost in translation.

My original post was a reply to someone saying because me have spent all this money we should be challenging for the title.

I agree we will not spend this amount ever again hence me saying we have only spent this amount due to saurez going.

The good thing is we have had the chance to spend such an amount to final get our squad up to a really good standard which we haven't seen in a good few years.

So come next summer its add 1 quality signing and like you say to replace anyone leaving.

I could have sworn we won this weekend. Granted I was away and might have heard wrong but I was certain we won 2-1. Seems like we lost 6-0 with no-one on our team even threatening goal and our midfield almost uniquely in top flight football games not getting a single touch of the ball. How very strange.

Guys, we went to a nervy opening game with most of our new signings still bedding in or not even available yet. Lallana, Markovic, Monero, Sakho, Can, Flanagan, Enrique, Ibe etc can and likely will play big parts for us over the season and most haven't even seen the pitch for more than an hour or so in pre-season yet, if that. Give the nay-saying a rest! We didn't have a great day but we did what we needed to, walked away with 3 points and we can all be absolutely certain that the best is yet to come.

Completely happy with the 3 points over the weekend, But it also highlights some serious problems which we should clear it out. If not we wouldn't be lucky against City and Spurs away.

Agree7 Disagree0

Adam, (I am presuming you are talking about Skrtel at CH) if yes I agree but we do not have an endless stream of cash, we have spent almost £40 mill on 2 CH's, only time will tell if it was well spent. Discuss all you like lads but there has been no discussion here. Just panic and player slating. To not see a single positive thing about a match we won is shocking. I literally wouldn't have a clue what the result was if I only looked at this page. All I'd know is that 100 people are desperate for money to be spent and several have written off a number of our players after one game, including a couple that were injured and didn't even make the bench

A lot of people want Lavezzi to be brought in as our striker signing.
But think about it will it solve our Center Forward problem?
Suppose (God forbid it please) Sturridge is out with a long term injury
I would really doubt Lamberts ability to lead the line for a long stretch with his back concerns
Borini I think will be sold to sunderland once we get a striker
Lavezzi and Markovic though capable of playing as a false no9 aren't what you would call strikers?
Thus I think we need to bring in a pure Center Forward
What does everyone else think?

We need a striker plain and simple.

{Ed002's Note - The enquiry for Cavani was many months ago.}

Bony would fit the bill better in my opinion, ability wise he is good and financially it would be a better option rather than going for Falcao or Cavani (who is hugely over-rated).

Completely agree with you on Lavezzi. I think he's very good but ya he's not a striker he's more of a wide forward/winger even.

Greetings Eds & Fellow Reds

It seems its all about Falcao on this site and in the press . One thing I would say is that Falcao + Liverpool = better sales for the media .

I think we do need another Striker as Sturridge does get injured now and again and to me we need more competition for places up top . I would say that Lambert is a great option to have and he certainly played his part on Sunday .When he came on he unsettled the oppo and helped make space for the goal.

Borini for me is still a bit of an unknown quantity at Anfield he has shown that glimpses of what he can do on loan but I am not convinced he is the answer this season.

I am not convinced by Falcao as an option he simply seems to be too expensive for us . I am not going into money but surely the FFP implications alone would mean that we need to be very careful as we are a club with significant debt .Also importantly does he want to come? Or are we simply one of the few clubs prepared and able to pay over the odds?

I believe we should look at a striker with something to prove, or a younger player .We need a striker who will be happy to fight for his place as Sturridge for me is the main man . Talk of benching him for Falcao etc is simply rubbish .Sturridge deserves proper respect his first 50 games have provided the best goal return we have had ever 36!

I would look at Bony, simply because he would come with a point to prove and he would be stepping up ( no disrespect to the swans) to a bigger club with better players so could not expect to walk in to a regular place.

I would also look at Huntelaar, he has real quality, would work well in a rotation system and is a proven goalscorer .

I hope we get another striker and I hope its someone that can lead the line and has a bit of presence about them .

If ( God forbid) Sturridge is Injured Lambert & Borrini for me will not produce enough goals to get us where we need to be so we really need another goal scorer, not just another forward .

Apart from the striking options I am really happy with our squad we have reasonable cover in most positions .I would say that the difference between challenging for the title and fighting for top four depends on adding to out striking options .

I would be interested to hear your thoughts .

Believable6 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2014 12:50:31
I agree with you Kobi. I see Bony and/or Huntelaar being the most realistic options. However, money aside, if Falcao has recovered from his injury, I would be extremely excited to see him in a Liverpool shirt!

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 12:52:05
Buddy, Take out Borini ( Its a shame though ), He is certainly not in BR's plans.

Agree3 Disagree0

We would be in a worse position if we don't sign Falcao and finish outside CL places than with him and in CL places. We need to sign him £10m loan fee and £9.6m seasons wages n' all. Justified by Suarez's 'would be' wages would cover the £200k per week Falcao wants. and a £10m from the £75m we got for Suarez = we loose nothing bringing him in just gaining £65m from the sale of Suarez. paying for Lallana, Markovic, Lovren.

Maybe just that the money(20m) could have been used to buy a more permanent solution BUT apparently THERE IS NO ONE available that is convincing enough people at the club to make a permanent signing having got Origi.

Agree1 Disagree2

I agree Boom, I hope Borini gets another chance to develop on loan as I do thing he could be a real talent but he needs games in my view and I don't think he will get them with us .

Agree1 Disagree0

James Pearce from Echo has said that LFC don´t have any interest in Bony.
Our attack is mostly built fast counterattacks, so I´m not sure that either Bony or Huntelaar will fit in. Their task would be similar to Lamberts - when fast counterattacks doesn´t work throw in a player who can add something else. In this case Lambert aswell as Bony and Huntelaar are great at hold up play, bullying defenders and try to shoot from distance.
If Sturridge does get injured, we need to replace him with someone who´s similar. Thus a player like Lacazette would be ideal.

Agree4 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 13:49:20
The Situation should have been Ideal, Two top class striker and Borini being the understudy.

A World Class Defensive Midfielder
A 10-15 goals a season Good enough Striker

You can only pick one and please do give reasons

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - sorry goal keeper is the most important for me.}

I agree with ed that a goal keeper is important but for me a striker ( not just a forward ) is vital last year the bug difference was that we had 2 strikers who finished of our build up play .We have a lot of creativity but need to finish that off if we are to mount a challenge for the prem .Another striker for me is key.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 12:34:20

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Aug 2014 12:50:00
Don't need a midfielder Allen showed he is good enough.a striker is imperative if we are going to challenge for the league.

Agree1 Disagree0

My order of prefereance would be:

1. An experienced striker capable of playing with or without Sturridge who will score 10-15 goals a season at least; Huntelaar, Torres, Eto'o etc. OR if we've got a bit more money to Spend go younger with Bony, Lacazette or Balotelli. The dream? Falcao, but only if it makes financial sense (loan to buy or outright purchase) and he passes his medical with flying colours. BUT only if Borini leaves. I'd rather just give him a shot to be honest.

2. A pacey forward who can play either flank, as a second striker and even in the hole; Konoplyanka, Lavezzi etc. I think attacking depth will be critical next season and I'd like to see Ibe get a loan so he can experience regular top flight football.

3. Replace Lucas with a world class holding midfielder. No, not Alex Song. Alonso, Lahm, Bender, Strootman etc. Somebody who will not just come in as a squad player, but nail the position down as their own. Again though, whilst I fancy Can as more of a box to box player, we could just give him a chance to cement the place as his own. Lucas is an adequate back up to Gerrard though, he just can't play with him.

4. Sign another keepr and sell Mingolet. Begovic, Hart, Cech etc. Hart and Cech are facing a serious reduction in their game time and a chance to become our undisputed number one would attract either of them in my opinion. Again though, I'd just keep Mingolet. Or converesely, sell Jones and sign Romero as the new back up.

I think we'll just get Bony/Balotelli and Konoplyanka though (with Borini sold and Ibe loaned out) and possibly replace Jones with Romero then be done for the summer which would more than please me.

Borini, Ibe, Lucas and Mingolet are all good players though so unless we can improve on them, there is no point in signing anyone else. The same with Jones, he is a willing back up who accpets he'll get less than 10 games a seaon so unless he can be improved on, why change it?

Agree5 Disagree6

Do you not rate migs ed001?
I think the guys decent just needs to improve distribution.
Also why do people think we need a DM? We have lucas! possibly the most underrated L.pool player on this site IMO if you were to look at his stats over the last 2 years for tackles won and tackle success rate I guarantee he would be in the top 5 in the PL.
For me a striker is the only signing we need now, i'd be happy with Bony or Balotelli

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he flaps at crosses as well. He really does not command the area at all.}

Why get rid of Mignolet?

Hes had 1 season with EMS, 1 and your already writing him off?

Young keeper who made a massive step up to a big club and yeah he may not off been as commanding as wouldve liked but that will come this year - Really don't agree with getting rid of a good young shot stopper and replacing with cech or Hart! You playing fifa

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't get rid of Migs myself, just add another keeper to compete. Jones is fine as 3rd choice, lovely fella, but just not good enough for the Prem.}

Mine would be not spending anymore money but reinvesting money we would get for selling players that don't really have a future with us.

Agger 10-12m
Lucas 10m
Coates 3m
(perhaps Johnson 5m)

GK: Romero 2m
DM: Song 8-10m
ST: Falcao 10m

that would kinda be a perfect transfer window which never happens so I'm not expecting it.

Agree1 Disagree2

If just one more signing I would go for Bony. He wouldn't be gone after a year (Falcao), he's affordable, he is good enough to start but not too good for the bench, he could play with Sturridge and he could provide cover for Sturridge when he's out injured. I think he would be the best fit available for us.

More flexible than Huntelaar positionally.
Lavezzi couldn't fill in at centre forward if Sturridge is out.
Falcao is too expensive for me.
Cavani is massively over-rated he wouldn't be worth the fee or his wages.

Agree1 Disagree2

I think we need the striker.
If Sturridge gets injured then we are in trouble.
Lambert can't be relied on as a first choice striker playing 2 or 3 times a week (Ed001 mentioned something about a long term back issue).
There are question marks about Borini's future and even if he stays then he doesn't fill me with confidence playing at the point of our attack.

I think with the defensive mid position Gerrad can play there for another season or 2, and by that time Can might have proven himself as an adequate replacement, plus we have Rossitter as a potential DM.
We also have Lucas to cover there and Allen or Hendo can drop in if we are short of numbers due to injuries and/ or suspensions.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm happy with migs. People are too quick tor remember keeper howlers but to keen to forget great saves.

If he improves his distribution, he'll be much better, also when skrtel finally stops dilly dallying on passes he'll look better with the ball at his feet.

Personally I don't want another player, I'm happy. Only get another striker, if he sells borini.

Nothing against the person Lucas, Who stood with the club over the worst time we had.
But Its time for us and him to mvoe on.
We are talking about players like Matic, Yaya etc.

We had 2 holing players against Southampton, Yet we were totally outplayed in the middle by Saints.

Agree4 Disagree2

Because Mingolet is too good to sit on the bench and would only request to leave next summee if he was completely replaced. He wouldn't get a game if we signed a world class keeper so we'd be better off selling him whilst he was worth something.

I did say though I'd rather just keep him. Signing Romero (who is equal to Mingolet) would give him something to fight for without completely wiping out his chances of playing. I simply meant that if we signed Begovic, keeping Mingolet on the bench would just dent his value and give us nothing.

ive just read your post on the 13th of august, how wrong you are about costa and fabregas, did you see fabregas chip the ball over the defence for the goal, well tell me who in our team or squad can do that, I said we should have got him, a lot was saying he was past it, he was not good because xavi got picked before him and all the other rubbish that got said about him, then there were the ones who said he cost too much, well if he helps chelsea to the prem it was money well spent

Believable3 Unbelievable5

{Ed001's Note - so now he has made one pass against an awful Burnley side, who were lucky that the Championship was so incredibly poor last season, Cesc is suddenly a great player? Talk about knee jerk!}

Though EMS was highly critical there.good players. However let's remeber it was 3-1 and if was any other player in the Chelsea game they wouldn't have.been soo overhyped. Fabregas is slow, can't tackle, will be.completely outmuscled by the top teams and doesn't press. Give him time and space he can pick a pass as can can any good player.

Yes you can say 'give him space etc' but you don't give him credit for making the space in key areas, whereas if he was a striker bed get all the credit for losing his man. Yeah maybe poor marking, but it's not easy to find space in the attacking third.

Agree1 Disagree0

It was the vision behind the pass it might have only been burnley but we have been beat by teams that were far worse, but hey you are all right and i'm wrong, I don't have a clue just because i'm not one of the boys on here does not mean i'm wrong, so if fabregas done it to us or man city or arsenal or Manchester United in the 1st game of the season it does not matter because that would be the reason for them teams, it was only the 1st game, EMS slated players and they produced, if I get thing wrong I admit it not many do on this site, plus it does not matter how fast or slow you are the vision to think about the pass was pure class, to say otherwise then its just daft because it was meant and a goals was scored from it

Agree0 Disagree0

Brown jesus did you watch him play for arsenal, he can pass a ball he might not do that identical pass but he will do many that goals will come from, what will you eat then maybe humble pie, he will do it all the time and he will have one of the top assists in the prem this season, some may talk about matic and it helps having a player like that I wish we had some one like him instead of lucas, but still fabregas will have to deliver and I think he will most of the time

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001

i was saying it before he signed for chelsea, that's why I wanted us to get him, but hey teams can only beat who they are playing, I hope you say the same ed001 when he does it against the better teams, and if I am wrong I will hold my hand up, he was class when he played for arsenal, maybe he won the player of the season because everyone felt sorry for him

Morning All,

I watched the Michael Owen documentary last night. Undoubtedly he was a fantastic player for us, but he took the shine off that by the way he left and what followed IMO. After watching the program I did slightly soften towards him.

I was just wondering what the consensus is on Mr Owen amongst the other posters and Eds?

Believable5 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I never liked him as a person, horrible little full of himself prick who was only ever interested in money. He was very good, but lacked the clinical edge Fowler had with his finishing.}

19 Aug 2014 11:10:12
He wanted to come back to us. But Rafa was never interested and righly so IMO.

19 Aug 2014 11:15:55
Agree with Ed, he was on the radio yesterday disputing Rodgers claims regarding young players and money, he even said 'an extra few hundred quid a week wouldn't affect a young player'. few hundred?! Great player, bit of a blob

Agree5 Disagree0

Hes such a bore as a pundit too, would rather listen to paint drying

Agree7 Disagree1

I fully agree with Ed 1. Michael Owen was only ever interested in himself, though sadly this is far too common in footballers. The "stalwarts" of any club are the exception. The best example I can recall of a player showing love and loyalty to a club over and above their own interests is Le Tiss. An exceptional player who could have achieved so much more, but stayed at Soton for his whole career. Sadly, you wouldn't see that in this day and age.

I seen carra getting asked about leaving Liverpool shortly after Istanbul to which he replied where would I go that would be better than Liverpool fc. Owen contradicted himself in one sentence he said his heart was set on joining and then he said footballers don't think like that it's all about people fergie loving person.

Agree2 Disagree0

As the song went where were you in istanbul, glad we did not take him back as if he was a horse he would have been put down at that stage.

Agree2 Disagree0

Ed01, agree with all you said about Owen except I can't believe you say he wasnt clinical.

{Ed001's Note - well he wasn't. He was handed numerous chances on a plate and would miss far too many of them.}

Ive been reading for days, people don't want falcao, he's not all that, he's a decent player, id.prefer bony". On form falcao is world class' for those in doubht watch his performance when playing for athletico against chelsea. He is an unbelievable finisher. If he gets.over his knee injury and were to come to us we would have one of the best strikers in the world. Will he be viable? I don't ni but make no question of his quailty.

Believable7 Unbelievable4

The only problem for me is the loan option. It would be an incredible amount of money to spend for only 1 season.

It would make more sense to buy him, and yes he would be a fantastic "replacement" for Suarez, however, I think this will come to nothing.

Red Rum

Agree3 Disagree0

The big question marks are fitness: could take him a full season to get fit and on top form again so what's the point? Not to mention adjusting to a new league.
The cost: he would cost the club about £25m for a years loan!
Huge gamble for any player let alone one with a bad knee.
Got to be a no go.

19 Aug 2014 10:46:58
Only a fool wouldn't want a player like Falcao in a team. He was very close to join chelsea, If not the money offered by Monaco.

Agree1 Disagree4

I think everyone is just cautious because of his knee and how much the deal would cost us. A £20m loan deal is not a good deal in my opinion. His talent is unquestionable and if money isn't an issue, I'd be ecstatic if we signed him.

Agree6 Disagree2

Only a fool would want him on loan after his recent injury problems.

Red Rum

Agree4 Disagree1

If he did come to us and his goals helped us win the league or the champs league would the loan money be worth it, I say it would, he is a finisher and knows where the goals is, I don't have any doubts over his knee look at demba ba, for me some fans sould just support the team and the players and want us to win instead of worrying about the money side of it, imagine worrying about the money everytime a good player is linked with us or we sign a player, just enjoy the football, not money ball

Hello lads, here's my tuppence on the 'great striker' debate.
If Falcao, Cavani, Lavezzi, Bony or someone of that calibre can't be attained within a reasonable financial package - then we run with Borini and Lambert as backups to Studge and see how we go till January.
E'too is past it in my opinion. Torres same.
Our role as fans is not to pressure the club into a panic buy that will be a financial noose around our necks for a number of years.
Brendan and FSG have demonstrated their willingness to 'go after' any player that they feel will improve us.
If a striker isn't there then they can't magic one out of thin air. Patience is required. For too many years we were a club that spent in haste and lamented at leisure.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

19 Aug 2014 10:15:21
The striker depate has a few levels imo, playing at least 2 forwards who are running behind the opposition defence creates space for hendo and countinio so they can play and increases our chance of scoring from periods of possession. We don't want to follow arsenals "packed midfield but no one getting into the box" example. Markovic seems to be the sort of player that will run from deep as will lalana to support and contribute goals and not much point spending the money on these guys if there not going to be playing a fair amount of first team football. You start adding up players and wonder whos going to be sitting out because evan if you play only one holding midfielder gerrard/lucas neither have the pace to defend or cover midfield runners like a player in that position should do. That leaves you with Can and dropping both of the formentioned to accomodate our attacking players and hendo. It feels like the sensible choice to do that but I wonder if BR will.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

19 Aug 2014 10:31:24
You are way too Judgemental.Neither Markovic and Can haven't kicked a ball yet in the League. They need to prove themself and adapt to the physicallity of the league.
I don't expect Markovic to score 20 goals in a debute season.

Agree6 Disagree3

What are you on about Harry? I can only assume that you, and your 4 agrees all completely failed to read the original post correctly.

North, I thought your post was spot on. Say hello to Kanye for me and tell Kim I'll call her later.

Agree2 Disagree0

The OP literally just made an observation that we've got a lot of depth in midfield and one of Gerrard or Lucas will need to be dropped to accommodate them. He didn't slag Markovic or Can off once, he merely stated there is no point signing people who won't play.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 12:17:07
Adam

All I meant was, let's not be too Judgemental and carried away with the player we bought in. We would need to give the new players time to settle in.
Lets not come here and slagg markovic next tuesday If He wouldn't perform at his very best.

I don't expect him or Can to make an instant impact as they are raw from another league.

Then why say North was too judgemental when he/she didn't judge anybody?

I see your point on the amount spent, but city and Chelsea have been doing this for years so we are still catching up.

The added challenge of the champions league will change things so top 4 would be good.

Ed001, with the likes of Falcao, Cavani and Eto'o being touted around, I see them as somewhat unlikely. fortunately because while being decent strikers I don't think they'd suit our style of play.

Who do you think would be the ideal player for us? Could Kono play up front or off the striker? Ed002 mentioned Pedro or Huntelaar who would fit. The dream would be Reus but that is never going to happen lol.

Cheers mate

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I can't believe you wouldn't want Falcao, injury free he is top class. Other than that, someone like Bony is about the best we could realistically hope for, in my opinion. He can play behind Sturridge or up top on his own if needed. He is unselfish and clever, as showed by his block to set up one of Swansea's goals at the weekend.}

19 Aug 2014 10:14:24
Falcao would be superb. and the year loan would suit him. he could prove his fitness to madrid and get his dream move.

Bony would also be good. We looked a bit lightweight at the weekend. Be good to get a physical option. and look at his goals, ok he's not as mobile as sturridge sterling but that would mean we could mix it up a bit, play the ball into him and let those two run off him for the second ball.

This was the hole suarez would drop into. and it's a big hole at the mo if we don't fill it

Agree1 Disagree0

Ed001

Please can you tell you whether we have any interest in falcao
yhe last definitive answer is from 10 days back

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - we asked about him, so there is interest there. I believe the interest was rebuffed.}

If the club deem Falcao financially viable, and he passes a medical without any issues, we'd be foolish to refuse him.

Sturridge always pulls wide which creates massives holes in the centre, but leaves nobody there to exploit it. It is obvious what Rodgers wants; an experienced forward who can play through the centre either with or without Sturridge hence Bony, Eto'o, Remy, Huntelaar, Falcao, Balotelli etc. All players with European experience who can play with or with or without Sturridge. Lambert is one option. However he has no European experience and has injury issues that will limit his gametime.

I wish we'd just give Borini the chance but it's not going to happen so we need someone who will willingly stand centrally to occupy their defence and someone who will run in behind and get into the box. Sturridge is too much of a free spirit. He can't play a disciplined striker role and asking him to do that wastes his skill and movement.

If we can fill this role in the squad, I think we'll see a move for Lavezzi or Konoplyanka but that is not a priority as we can just keep Ibe at the club till January and address it then.

Falcao is a dream for the position, but it's just a big risk I doubt the club would be willing to take. Perhaps a loan to buy deal would be a good move but a solitary loan that would cost an 8 figure sum seems silly to me. Then again, it's not my job to worry about finances!

Untill an year Back. Falcao was the best striker in the world. He was third placed in the Ballon Do'r.
He had everything a striker should have.

If you need a top class striker, you need to pay top class fee and wages. Now that's a fact.

I don't think this transfer would happen.

I agree with Adam, Keep Borini and get Kono and Lavezzi. more likely to happen
Chelsea have only one out and out striker.

Agree3 Disagree0

To be fair Falcao would be good, but the money involved for only a year long loan sounds ridiculous.

Thanks for the response ed001

What is your knowledge of actual registered interest from LFC in strikers as it stands today?

Are the clubs (LFC ) representitives / agents in talks with any players / clubs representitives / agents to discuss possible transfers?

When you say the question was asked to Monaco (regarding Falcao). what was the response from the club / player?. was there any interest from them?

Or did we back off when financials were discussed?

19 Aug 2014 09:23:00
Just like to share my view on Sunday as people have touched on my main point but not thoroughly. We struggled because of our midfield, or complete and utter lack of one. Henderson always seemed to be out wide, gerrard inline with, or behind the centre backs and lucas ball watching/under Harry Potters invisibility cloak. This allowed southampton complete controll to nick the ball off the front men and run straight at the defence virtually untouched. The lack of a midfield also reduced our outboard with lovren and gerrard regularly lumping it long. Finally, whenever Manquillo or Johnson or even Sterling got wide with the ball they seemed to always turn inside to the southampton comtrolled middle making it hard to supply cout and studge. We need to play the likes of Can against city or the same will happen again, and I don't see Silva Toure and Nasri struggling to get past Skrtel and Gerrard. Can plays, we stand a chance, Lucas plays we dont. Also, Hendo needs to learn to get back central, like he was last season, when the opposition have the ball to help cover the defense and Sterling/Johnson/Manquillo/Moreno need to have confidence to run at men wide to give us an outboard.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Were these people who touched on your main point working for the BBC in the 1970s?}

I thought we were playing a sorta 4411 to start, with hendo on the right and sterling pushed up a little higher.

So easy when you're sat in an armchair at home haha. Henderson was told to play out wide, I get your point about Lucas amd Gerrard, but you have to understand they are told to play there by the manager. Rodgers obviously thought it best to play two holding midfielders. Maybe Can isn't quite ready, who knows. Hopefully it was more first-game nerves than anything.

Saying "Brendan told them to play there" changes nothing. Boom got it spot on. How can we play lucas and stevie to cover the back four and have no cover for the back four? They both disappeared for long stretches. Henderson may aell have been told to play right mid but if Rogers is this great tactician everyone heralds him as how did he not spot the issue and simply move hendo inside? My point is the same, play yhis same 11 with the same tactics against City and Silva and Toure will have a field day.

getting falcoa on loan will cost to much money and we be left with the same problem next year.
before his injury falcoa was proberly the best striker in europe, but he had a serious injury it could take him several months to get his goals scoring touch.
cavani is a good player but not a stiker we need he drifts out wide we have sterling/markovic/ibe for that role.
we need a dzeko type of striker, someone who can score and hold the ball upfront for our pacey players.
i know not everybody will agree but balotelli is the only class forward available.
if br can get his head in order and make him work more we will have a real star.
balo has it all strenght, pace, ball control, and goals.
i think at anfield with the crowd behind him he could be great.
we need him and he needs us.

i was actually happy with the game the weekend. I know we didn't perform well as such but Man U and Chelsea make a habit of scraping wins in the games they play poorly in and everybody says its a champions mentality. Not saying we're going to be champions or anything but think it was a great way to start the season and give the players the belief that no matter how difficult a game is they have the determination to scrape through. Hopefully it'll be a little easier to watch though

For me, I'm happy with 4th, maintain champions league football is basically priority 1, we are still in transition really, have to deal with the extra games and BR has to learn to rotate his squad now

Happy to hold off the title challenge until next year, that's not to say that I don't think we will put pressure on City and Chelsea this year but I don't generally expect us to do better than 3rd

Believable7 Unbelievable1

Maybe i'm old fashioned, but when you spend over £100m on new players you expect to be challenging for the title.

We have the squad (except a forward) to compete on all fronts, therefore, there is no excuse not to go all out to win every game.

1 game at a time lads, aim for 1st in all comps and see where we end up.

Red Rum

Agree10 Disagree1

I'm with Red Rum. Aim for 1st in every game you play and the trophies will come naturally.

Unfortunately, "next year" never comes. Last two times we finished second, there was no next year. We just faded away.

United with Fergie won it for the first after just falling short the year before.

We must try to do the same. Or momentum could be gone.

We have some key players at their peak now - Henderson, Sturridge. Sturridge cannot keep scoring at this rate indefinitely.

I think the expression is
"Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you'll end up amongst the stars"

If you fell from the moon, assuming you somehow escaped disintegration during re-entry, you'd come crashing back down to earth ;)

Agree2 Disagree0

We should always aim for the title. We only just lost out on the title last season, we have strengthen our squad and should look to push on.
The win on day one is a win that champions get, scrappy and maybe undeserved. That was a draw or loss previous seasons.

However if there is a better team this season but we've pushed them close all season then that just happens sometimes.

If it does end the same as last season, top four, great exciting football, challenging again then I'd still be happy. Our team and players trying their best in training, at the game. If that continued I wouldn't be calling for Rodgers to go, would think it's £100m wasted. I'd still feel positive.

It was very recent that we'd have loved to be in the Champions League and looked miles away from it and Man Utd, watching over our shoulder a Spurs side ready to push us further away, not looking like we'll ever have the squad to compare to Chelsea and Man City. I remember that feeling and glad the feels like a distant memory

--from my bomb shelter.

Agree0 Disagree0

Im not saying we shouldn't aim to win, but if we put in a good challenge but fall short I would still be happy, like I said, we have to get used to additional games and the whole squad has to gel to cope with rotation, one of the benefits of only having 13 or so players last season is that you play with the same players every game so you develop a 6th sense about what people will do around you, anyone who plays any team sport will understand what i'm on about

my prediction for this season is to come third and anything above that I would be over the moon, we have a very young squad, many of whom havnt played a first team game in england and I just feel that its too soon to expect too much

that said, things are looking very good, exciting to see how we will do in europe and if sunday is anything to go by it looks like we might start grinding out the tough 3 points which maybe the last few seasons we wouldve lost or drawn - the future is bright

Johnson, well what can I say. another poor performance, Lucas struggled! (noticed he waved to the crowd at the start).

Just hoping we can tie up a deal for a decent striker/attacker/forward before the window closes, we need more potency upfront! (not even going to start listing possibles, as we are just linked with too many to speak of).

I have concerns about Coutinho (enough said).

I for one would have liked to see Ilori play for the team (but he is on loan again), maybe even in a makeshift DM role (lads got pace and craft).

Next few days, may very well define our season!.

Your posts the last few days have been. out in left field. But, most of this I agree with. The ilori as a defensive mid idea just seems terrible for me.

Coutinho just needed help We played too defensively with Lucas and Gerrard in the team and it costed us. Allen coming on changed the game for me. And lambert did well. I don't know that we need another forward option; if we have Borini, that is.

Agree1 Disagree1

Don't worry about Coutinho, he seems to have a slight attitude but he'll come good, this is his season!

Agree0 Disagree6

I think that Can should have partnered Gerrard in the middle or Allen, Lucas would have been my third choice, but at least we have options there.

Coutinho was just crowded out because Gerrard and Lucas sat so deep, he didn't really have a chance to get involved in the game.

Agree3 Disagree0

Its all about having an opinion and a view, you either agree or disagree.
If everyone thought the same, there would be no need for any form of communication or expression. .the world would be full of 'mindless sheep' easily influenced and without any, resolve or dedication.

Yes, I am on the left, its the best place to be, a statement of collective resolve and dedication.
Capitalism is motivated only by greed and seeks to exploit all and mainly the weak, when profit goes before people. well then its really f**ked up!

Ilori point is mute anyway, as he is on loan again, which is real pity.
Fact is we have a need for a true DM, not to mention others.

If we play against Man City as we did against Shampton, we will be torn to shreds.

Coutinho, well I chose not to go into too much detail, but suffice it to say, his passing game was well below par (many stray passes, lacks strength, and stamina).

Anyrate, less than 2 weeks of the window left, and hopefully the team can address the issues.

We have many, many games to play, and a lacking of real potency up front.
Can't win games defending and not without scoring goals.

Hello mates!
Stopped posting for a while basically because everthing I needed to say or ask already had been treated.
In all sincerity, the game against Soton was not a good one. Am not saying this because we didn't play well(of course we didn't), but because Rodgers knows starting an immobile Lucas with Gerrard in the deep will leave the CBs exposed, yet he chose to. I don't know what he was experimenting against a rampant Soton sde who lost the better players and have a point to prove! Even if you have the best CBs, the pressure on them will be too much! We won and got the max 3points which is good for us.

Is it true that Lallana is back in training?
Cos we need him for the match against City!
Johnson's contract clause better not be true because its going to be our undoing this season if we keep using him!

Nice Job Eds and I hope this get posted(lots of missing posts)

Believable0 Unbelievable2

I agree with you but I thing BR went with the most epl experienced side he could to just get through the fist match which is always tricky. Manquillo excepted. Just my thoughts but I expect BR to start intergrating the new boys over the next few games. hope i'm right.

Agree1 Disagree0

Hopefully BR sees the same as everyone else and starts Can above Lucas. Johnson will most likely play and Lallana is back in training but will only be ready in September. apparently

Thought can wouldve bossed that game tbh, was a bit disappointed to not see him included

I noticed something about Lovren on Sunday, he really fizzes the ball into players testing their control, it's going to be interesting to see who can and who can't control the passes from him.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Can can

Agree9 Disagree0

Stevie is the same Al, he likes to fizz a ball to feet.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yeah we should see some quick sharp passing throughout the whole team this season.

Our team lost the middle (in southampton match) because we no have a,, guard dog,, like was Mascherano . other teams like chelsea have matic or ramires, city have fernando or toure. STEVIE . are like an regista. like pirlo. henderson is not defensive midfield. I think Liverpool need one defensive midfield. SONG IS THE BETTER OPTION for now. for striker I choose cavani. I think I'll get ready to become coach. Why do you think you?

Believable0 Unbelievable8

I'd take Cavani, not Song, Gerrard is perfect there, put Can next to him and you'll see a major difference

Agree2 Disagree3

Song isn't a defensive midfielder either.

not sure if anybody's mentioned it yet, but Sturridge has just overtaken Torres in to second for most goals after 50 games for LFC:

1. George Allan 1895-97 41
2. Daniel Sturridge 2013-14 36
3. Fernando Torres 2007-08 34

take a bow son.

He overtook him last season. He just played his 50th game on Sunday to make up the stat

Joel Campbell would be a good signing. 22 years old and can play anywhere across the front line.

He's a nuisance to play against like Sterling. He has the energy to fit in with our pressing game, he can drive at players and he can score goals.

A front line of Sterling, Sturridge and Campbell would be terrorising for any defence.

If Arsenal are still interested in Agger then we should try and sign him.

{Ed030's Note - Arsenal will not sell one of their bright young talents to a rival, It would be like Liverpool selling Ibe to Chelsea. }

Arsenal are well known for selling good players to their rivals ;)

In all seriousness, he's 22 years old and will want to play regularly. Can Arsenal offer him that game time?

News from the ever reliable Chris Bascombe:'Liverpool remain confident that they will sign an additional striker but there is every chance it will drag on until the final days or hours before the transfer window closes .
Interest in Radamel Falcao is complicated because of the player’s preference for Real Madrid and the Spanish side may raise funds to make a late move by offloading some of their players.
Liverpool also retain an interest in Samuel Eto’o, although he is facing a dilemma as to whether to wait for a decision from Anfield or accept an offer from Ajax.'

Suso not making the bench hope he wins BR over soon if he shows Hendersons attitude he could make it

Believable2 Unbelievable0

To be fair you could say the same about a lot of young players - Henderson's attitude and professionalism is exemplary, all the youngsters on our books should be looking to emulate what he does - if they did there is every chance they too could have a successful career with us.
