When I was a kid in the late 80s (I remember Dalglish, Beardsley, Whelan), whenever we cared to my Dad would take us to Anfield and we'd pay a fiver at half time to get into the kop. I'd sit on top of a tall brick wall to the right hand side to get a view.

I was in the Main Stand when Michael Thomas scored THAT goal.

In the 90s (I remember Barnes, Rush, Fowler) when I was a bit older me and my brother were allowed to go on our own to the kop. I'd wear walking boots to be a bit taller but I still couldn't see much. The best bit was when we scored and I could lift my feet up and be carried round in the crushing surge, and end up metres away from where I started.

I was there at the last standing match of the kop in 1994 (beaten by Norwich). I remember chanting "you're supposed to let us win".

The last time I was in Anfield we were beaten by Blackpool- October 2010.

I've not been able to get a ticket since.

Until now. On Sunday I'll be back. My girl will be with me, attending Anfield for the first time. Being American she has adopted Liverpool as her team in England (a Timbers fan first) and is as excited as me.

What's the point of all this?

Fact is- tickets for Anfield are like hen's teeth. The ground being what it is, experiences like this only come around twice a decade for some of us. Hoping for a good game. Hoping for passion. Hoping for a win. I'm going to say 3 - 0.

We all read plenty of rubbish on here, we all post plenty of rubbish on here, lol.
But sometimes one of us posts something that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, goose bumps on your arms.
Well done Stoneage, you've rekindled wonderful memories of seasons gone by, great times to be a LFC fan.
I hope that you both have a great time this weekend and for the younger posters I hope you can feel what us older guys felt when we were the great Liverpool Football Club. We really can get back there, I want to see our great club at the top again.
Have a great weekend Stoneage and thanks for the memories.
B.

{Ed003's Note - Don't forget the bit about Blackpool winning :) It was my Birthday and I can remember - even if I can't remember getting home lol.}

I was on the kop for Michael Thomas's goal. You could have heard a pin drop, shattering. That was my last game before emigrating to oz. I'm back every couple of years and only get to a game when a family member is willing to give up a ticket. My most memorable game of recent years was when a cousin let me have her ticket for the gladys st end, Goodison. We won 3-1 with crouchy scoring the opener and cisse rounding it off. It took all my strength to sit quietly for our first two goals, but couldn't help myself when cisse scored the third. I jumped up and down so much and the toffees around me kicked off so I was escorted from the ground, worth it!

You're off your head stone. I can't see Norwich getting 3. If we play Sakho they'll only beat us 2-0!

That was unexpected.

I hope it means he's going to play more, because I really think he could be a top defender with the right coaching, and even being slightly ragged as he is now, he should be starting.

But my cynical side suspects there's a specific transfer fee get out clause if he doesn't get a certain amount of games and BR will end up allowing it to trigger. Assuming such a thing is legal, of course.

So happy about this. He seems like an awesome guy whith his philanthropy outside of the club. He also seems like a great personality inside the dressing room. Oh yeah he also happens to be our best cb by a long shot.

Yeah I wonder if that's for the extra money and he still wants to leave. It's all well and good wanting to fight for your place but when you do enough in the games you play and the 'first choice' are still being picked and making mistakes then it can't be good for you're confidence in playing

My son has downloaded Champ Manager on my phone. I'm not going to brag but I stuffed WestHam 5-0 when I was bored waiting on a call last night.
I answered my call thinking it was business but it was Ian Ayre himself. Apparently it was tactical genius the way I replaced Migs and Lovren, and played Firmino in his natural position.
The man was bamboozled by my team the way it 'for the first time in 3 years',, took it to the bi line and crossed it in for Benteke to head.
Not saying i'm Bill or Bob,,, but I'm going to put my name down for the vacancy if we don't beat Nowrich

Hi eds so what is the update on the Klopp situation with the new story now coming out with Liverpool could speak to Klopp in November. Wonder if you could possibly shed some light on it. is it just a made up story because of the Liverpool struggles so its an easy story to write or is there actually some truth in the matter?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is no situation with Klopp and I am told that some think Honigstein has written he now says was taken out of context.}

18 Sep 2015 16:54:08
He also said Liverpool might sit down with his people again in november. This november.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - He retracted that and said it was taken entirely out of context.}

18 Sep 2015 20:22:14
He said thay Liverpool had contacted Klopp 2 times before. What he corrected was that those two times were in the past, not this summer. At least that's what he himself wrote on twitter. Here's to hoping :)

Agree5 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 22:33:04
Can't quite follow why they would talk to him in November and not now. Unless thing just go massively sideways (which is very much a possibility), I really don't see Rodgers going anywhere anytime soon.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Sep 2015 01:27:01
He said Liverpool haven't contacted Klopp yet this Summer (they did twice in the past), but that's the only thing he cleared up. The rest wasn't out of context, he was very deliberate with what he said. He gets the sense after talking to a few people that Liverpool may approach him in November, but that may or may not have implications on this season. Honigstein is a credible journo, but all we can do now is just wait and watch the story of this season unfold.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Move on. Liverpool has not made any approach to Klopp regarding November and if they did now there would certainly be a constructive dismissal issue they would need to deal with. Perhaps they should talk to the lawyers about this whilst they are discussing another matter with them? It is simply not true.}

19 Sep 2015 11:26:40
Come on guys just leave it, you know ed002 is always right

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Sep 2015 11:47:53
We're not saying at all that Liverpool have already made an approach to Klopp for November, and that is not what Honigstein is remotely saying.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - RH retracted the statement and has made it clear that it was being taken out of context - November actually relates to something else entirely.}

18 Sep 2015 10:56:05
Question for Ed001.
Can you see a scenario whereby both Skertle and Lovern are both dropped, leaving Gomez and Sahko at CB, and Moreno and Clyne at fullbacks?

I think it is so important to our style to have Mereno in there, providing pace, particuarly when we play the diamond and need extra width, but you simply can't drop Gomez. Sahko is the best defener it goes without saying.

Believable9 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - no, I don't expect that pairing to be split up, they are the manager's first choice pair. Considering he never trusted the defence enough to play a back four in midweek, I don't see him going with Sakho and Gomez in the Prem.}

18 Sep 2015 12:08:48
I like that idea beavun. I also believe we should play a straight 4-4-2 to take advantage of our strengths. Benteke needs help up top.

Agree3 Disagree1

18 Sep 2015 12:32:57
Perhaps not immediately but if the first choice pair continue to disappoint, whilst Sahko and Gomez perform well in EL? I think it could be a good combo of pace, strength and passing ability is obvious with both players. We all remember Kane using the EL to break into the Spurs team in the PL.

Agree8 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 12:36:18
J4stone, I guess the problem is we only have 1 winger; Ibe who is not performing so far this season. Brendan should of persisted with Markovic. I think the diamond should be persisted with, allowing Sturridge in with Benteke. But I repeat, we need Moreno if we are going to do that.

Agree6 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 12:47:08
Wide players will get the best out of Benteke. No use of adding up strikers and ACM behind him. He is a very differnet player to Suarez.

Agree2 Disagree12

18 Sep 2015 13:21:29
maybe your underestimating benteke abit there EG. i had big doubts when we bought him, bt he is a much better player than when i saw him with aston villa.

he needs support around him, he is isolated too many times. it doesn't have to be a wide player. the diamond will provide with a striking partner upfront.

Agree12 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 14:41:42
People get too hung up about the formation. Have you ever seen a players' heat map?

The problem is, the freedom and expression that BR raves about seems to have been replaced with this new defensive nous, which in turn, isn't making a blind bit of difference.

I no longer have any idea on how we're going to play week on week.

Agree3 Disagree4

18 Sep 2015 17:35:01
Formation is more about player responsibilities as opposed to where they
stand on a patch of grass.

If you tell firmino to play off benteke instead of on the right side of a 4231, the player knows that it his now his responsibility to form a partnership with benteke and the others know that he is a go to man, as opposed to being stuck too far out with defensive responsibilities.

Sure firmino may end up dropping deep or going out of position to get the ball, but his responsibilities have changed.

Because the clubs websites will be bombarded with the kinds of posts that would make the club look bad as a global brand.
The club are trying to lure in fans from all corners of the globe using websites and the like, imagine a potential fan going on the clubs website then seeing all the fans slag off the players/manager/owners etc, they would probably click on the man United page instead. Lol

Please come back to this site after Norwich beat us 3-0 after skrtle gives away 3 penalties and you will see what I mean.

I'm Brendan's biggest critic but feel he can't win this time.
Don't play the kids and your ignoring them and holding them back, play them and your not taking the competition seriously.
I'm glad he played them actually, it was nice to see what they can do and they show such passion compared with half the senior team.
Let's be honest with ourselves as well, it doesn't really matter if Brendan takes the competition seriously or not because we are never going to win it with him in charge, he's got to be our worst performing manager in Europe ever.
He has absolutely no clue whatsoever when it comes to European football, it's like he has never watched any continental teams play.
A good manager will change his teams tactics to counter the playing style of whatever team he comes up against, Rodgers doesn't do this so he's always going to struggle against all the different playing styles in Europe.

Believable21 Unbelievable0

18 Sep 2015 09:52:54
I don't think the issue is playing the kids, it is that it should have a strategy based on what is best for their development. Chucking them in together, with mainly 'also rans', to see how they go,may not be ideal.

18 Sep 2015 10:59:17

18 Sep 2015 11:10:52
All depends on the weekends team though. Not much point playing that team if we go back to the way we played the last couple of weeks. Personally I would have liked to see a little bit of experimentation last night. Change the back 4 up which we did and was good to see. Give rossiter a chance chiverella probably also merited the run out but then try maybe a partnership with benteke up top? We need to find a genuine way to be effective with the ball and if our defence staY's shakey this just becomes more relevant. Would be fine if we were able to control the game and hope to knick most games 1 or 2 nil but that ain't happening for me anyway

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 17:39:59
I personally think the maximum number of kids you can play at once is 3 before your side ceases to become your actual side.

If you've got 6 teenagers playing instead of 6 first teamers you're basically playing the under 21's and not liverpool aren't you?

So yes he did try to play kids, but that doesn't excuse the still poor management. Or the stupid formation.

Maybe he should of played more kids when we had patience with him and before they had left, eg shelvey, suso, soon wisdom etc

18 Sep 2015 08:26:50
Does anyone else feel that putting Clyne at right back the rest of the defence should remain. Gomez ( how good does he look by the way) Shako or best defender at the club and Moreno at LB looks decent. A lot more balance.

With 4 very winnable games coming up, this might well be an opportunity to try that back four and see if it works, and give them a chance to work together.

But I bet dumb and dumber will be back against Norwich.

Agree11 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 09:04:10
Moreno should always be the LB for me, I for one couldn't understand the logic in playing him WB, If he is vulnerable in defending how could you play him lone on the flanks? Gomez should partner Sakho in the middle and Clyne at RB.

Agree9 Disagree2

18 Sep 2015 09:19:07
Couldn't agree more.
Clyne-Gomez-sakho-Moreno.
Skrtle and lovren should be benched and sold.
Lovren has had enough chances now, he's not the same defender he used to be and he's never going to be now.
Skrtle. Well I don't really need to go there, does anybody apart from Brendan still rate him?

Bordeaux was a winnable gamr yet we could have conceded 3 goals. WH was a winnable game yet we got stuffed. Utd was a game wr could have easily gotten a point in andwe got stuffed while the other games, we dtruggled mightily. None of thrse teams are better than us yet we make them look good because of the dreadful systems we play. We are our own worst enemy because our team is set up tp lose or not win. How are we supposed to succed this way? How is this diff ftom Roy's time here? Something is not right and it needs to b fixed i can't handle watching this dross every game.

Hi ed002, apologies if you already answered this, but what do you think of FIFpro's new proposal to FIFA on abolishing the current transfer system?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It has been on cards and in discussion for a long time but the proposals don't align well with reality. It would certainly force the breakaway to be accelerated and it would then not only partition elite clubs but may force a union of elite players. In a way this would suit them as they could pick up the balance and represent them. Write now they naively don't distinguish between clubs and leagues - and unfortunately that makes matters problematic. To be workable at a lower level it would require the restructuring of the leagues in to clear tiers and that could screw a lot of clubs. There is a lot of fluff in the proposals about agent fees etc. which can be worked out without their involvement. Some of the proposals would be acceptable to world football but they need to break the proposals up in to small bite sized chunks that can be dealt with separately. Going after UEFA is not the ideal way forward, and is perhaps a mistake. When I have some time I will try and work up a fuller answer.}

Thank you for the overview Ed002. I look forward to reading the more in depth post.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - FIFPro made collective asses of themselves at their press conference by citing examples of transfer fees which were throwaway comments by others and discussing matters that have zero to do with them. They need to focus on the real issues facing their members in the old Eastern Bloc, Greece, Turkey and South America rather than discussing the flow down of transfer fees from the "elite" sides to the lower tier sides, the costs of transfers, the transfer windows etc.. If you go back to the real issues their members have and raised they are to do with non payment of wages, access to free legal council, getting a hand post a low paying soccer career etc.. Heading in the direction of flow down as they see it is like going back to the 1950s where Manchester United would buy the best player from Bolton who would replace him with the best player from Huddersfield Town who would raid Rochdale for their best player who would recruit some cloth cap wearing deep-lying playmaking goalkeeper from Liverpool or Harworth Colliery & Railway Sidings Reservesl.}

Hey ed1 what did you think of the youngsters playing tonight are they finally getting a chance or is this just cause rodgers isn't caring ao much about europe . Again i had to take the wife to dirty dancing * sigh* but thought it might be better viewingbthan ghe game would be lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is clearly Rodgers putting the Europa League as a lower priority, similar to the League Cup. It is good to see them getting a chance, but just throwing a bunch in like that is not the best way to settle them in the side for the long term.}

18 Sep 2015 07:24:59
Agree 100% - love to see the youngsters in the team but rather one or two at a time, or for 30mins cameo's so they settle in and learn from the best rather than feeling like a 90% B team match.

I think Rossiter deserves more chances while Hendo injured but most others should make do with cameo's and fighting for one or two spots in the odd cup game.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 07:52:46
There were too many kids in that squad. I know people will disagree with me, but I am of the opinion that Liverpool need to take the Europa League seriously. Not only will a good run give confidence and experience to a squad and manager very low on European expertise, but it give a real opportunity and an alternative to win a trophy obviously, and qualify to the CL next season. It will also increase LFCs ranking in Europe that will help with seeding purposes in future European competitions, and they should give it a bit more respect and stop thinking so highly about themselves, particularly when Rodgers the clueless is in charge and his ineptitude got embarrassed LFC last season int he CL.

Agree6 Disagree1

18 Sep 2015 07:54:18
Rodgers is void of sensibility. I have shaken my head in disbelief more in the past three years than I have in the 35 years of my life preceeding his arrival. He is not the manager to lead the club to any form of success in my opinion. I don't know who I would want in his place, so I am not calling for him to be sacked. I am just being realistic that we will not be seeing him lift a trophy of any kind in his time here. And that gives me zero satisfaction - it saddens me actually.

Agree5 Disagree1

18 Sep 2015 00:22:57
Up until last season I was a very frequent watcher of the Academy sides, and Pedro Chirivella was a joy to watch.

At that level he dictated the tempo in midfield and always looked calm and confident in possession. I'd love to see him play again. Could be a gem.

Cheers

Believable5 Unbelievable0

18 Sep 2015 04:43:09
didnt get to watch the game, how did he play?

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Sep 2015 07:48:32
Chirivella has this natural ability to pass beautifully, but he needs to develop the defensive side of his game. More than on 3 occasions he was caught out hopelessly when in a defensive situation. But it was his first professional game, and he did relatively well against a very average Bordeaux team, though he will need to also bulk up and learn the nuances of defensive play.

Agree4 Disagree0

17 Sep 2015 23:15:20
Not a huge amount to write home about but an away point in Europe isn't a bad one. It's a shame we dropped so deep at the end as we could easily have doubled are lead imo. Sakho showed why he should have been in the team weeks ago. I'm suprised BR has gone back to the 3-4-2-1 because there is virtually no options at times for the defenders and central midfielders when then they have the ball. Coutinho was shackled by the formation and couldn't get the ball enough. Well done to Rossiter, Chirivella and Brannagan who all looked tidy and not out of place. I really hope we don't go for 3 at the back against Norwich because in the PL I feel it's recipe for disaster. Luckily Bordueax didn't press us high enough otherwise we would have been in trouble.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I am still not impressed at all with BR's system(s). The first half was painful to watch. No penetration, no incisive movement or passes bar Sahko who had a very good game along with Rossiter, Chirivella and Couts. All we did was pass the ball around in our half. Only Couts tried to make things happen while the rest stood and watched. Bar his goal, Lallana was very poor, late to get into space and late to release the ball after mucking about before. We scored and was slightly better but all in all, not good enuff especially vs a piss average Bordeax team (I've been watching Ligue 1 since the 90's).

This Bordeaux team will be happy to finish in the Top 10 in France, and are about the poorest Bordeaux team I have seen over the past 7-8 years or so since I started following French football. It is poor to see Rodgers set out to draw a game such as this when a little more adventure would have won us the game quite comfortably, even with all the kids in the team.

Correct ag completely winable game but yet again compromised by poor tactics and decision making.

Lets be clear there was nothing wrong playing alternative players as that's why you have a squad. A few of the defensive players left out have also been awful so dropping them was a no brainer. However to go and play 5 in midfield looking for another bore draw just is not the lfc way.

Both the strikers were horribly isolated yet again, when they equalised we had no conviction to try and win the game. Evidenced by at the end a cross came into the box and only ings was in there with five statues outside the box looking at him.

Wheres the influence that the new coaches were supposed to bring, another bunch of bredonite yes men.

Thought Lallana was much better than you just made out and his goal was excellent. I like seeing him and Couts work together and I'm glad he's fit again.

Stolen point IMO. We were shocking in the first half and the second only had a few moments of quality. Sure, a lot of new players and a meaty situation, but I found there to be a lot of passengers. A lot. Sakho was, by far, the best of the Liverpudlian bunch. Couts was excellent, but caught in possession far too often for my taste - perhaps a function of the surrounding "quality."

I really want to like Ibe. I really want to believe (I sound a sorry version of the X-Files) that he's going to be better than Sterling and that he brings a lot of quality to the squad. All I see, though, is a player who consistently gets it completely wrong. Thus far, not a fan of his game.

As for Lallana, even a blind squirrel finds a nut. A moment of brilliance seems to have masked his ineptitude for a lot of the match. Again, I want to like him, I see flashes of a strong player, but he's never really done it for me. Hopefully get gets plenty more run-outs in Europe and Cup play to get fit so he can show me what he's made of.

Nice to see some youth out there, though I question both the occasion and the number. One could make the argument that BR is *trying* to get the sack with his playing style and choices. Sure, Europe is secondary to league, but would the team he fielded avoid the drop in the Prem?

As for the tactics. . *thunk*
