Use our rumours form to send us liverpool transfer rumours.

18 Mar 2016 17:38:23
Hi Ed002, After my horribly flawed attempt to explain the work permit regulations for non-EU players in the EPL (! ), you asked me to remind you to put up a post explaining the new regulations which you oped to do over the weekend.

Here's your reminder ;)

Thanks

Zed.

{Ed002's Note - Hassle me Monday Z.}

Got to say Sakho was superb last night, I have been critical of him but his best game by far for me. If he continues like that I will be well pleased. He headed everything that came into the box.

Hey guys, just thought I'd get people's views on starting Origi and Sturridge up front with Coutinho as the attacking mid with Can as defensive mid with Lallana and Allen either side of him in midfield. Then have Flanno, Sakho, Lovren and Smith in defence with Migs in net against the Saints.

Love to hear what you guys think.
Cheers in advance.

This would allow us to press well, while giving Firmino, Hendo and Clyne some rest and get them refreshed for upcoming fixtures.

18 Mar 2016 19:36:35
Where does firmino fit in?! prob been our best attacking player.

18 Mar 2016 20:08:14
I expect the same team to start against Southampton. Except Milner who is suspended for Flanno / Moreno.

18 Mar 2016 21:25:46
Henderson is a doubt, and I expect Allen to come into the team for him, and if Milner is suspended, and Moreno unavailable, Flanagan should come into the RB spot, pushing Clyne to the LB slot.

18 Mar 2016 22:24:31
Expect Benteke to play .

18 Mar 2016 23:25:16
no chance I would leave Firmino out against Southampton, wonderful player.

19 Mar 2016 00:49:41
I'd leave Clyne RB and put Flanno LB, he's played there more for us. Flanno played RB v City specifically to nullify Sterling, otherwise I doubt we'd have seen the switch.

19 Mar 2016 02:38:33
You've left out Firmino

If I were to play a diamond against Southampton I'd go Benteke/ Sturridge upfront, Firmino in behind them and a Coutinho/ Can/ Hendo midfield.

I suspect Klopp will go with what we had against the Mancs and fit Flanno in at LB

Llalana/ Allen/ Can lacks something defensively IMO.

19 Mar 2016 09:48:47
Mignolet
Clyne lovren sakho flanno
Hendo can
Lallana firmino coutinho
Sturridge

On current form team picks itself and i feel this is the best formation to suit the players. If hendo hasn't recovered then Allen comes in. Would give origi 30 mins in place of sturridge as he's looked impressive when coming on.

18 Mar 2016 19:11:09
Lovren&sakho looking like they can be good partnership really impressed with them lately. they were superb last night I think if it wasn't for them it could of been much closer. Clyne struggled big time not just the penalty. Get rid of skittles"llori and fetch in subotic ( spelling) and a dominant keeper (begovic) and with the rest of the squad I really don't think we're far off being a real force. What you think eds?

Believable1 Unbelievable8

{Ed001's Note - not sure why we need Subotic.}

18 Mar 2016 19:17:00
We need subotic because Lovren&sakho fitness records are not the best and we need people with class who can slot right in.

{Ed001's Note - I seem to remember Subotic having a few injury problems and he is far from top class.}

18 Mar 2016 19:23:57
Most players get injured that's why we need cover. What world clas defender would you like to c come in then ed001 wich you think we would be able to sign?

{Ed001's Note - we have signed Matip. Perhaps we would be better off just giving Toure one more year and waiting to see how Matip gets on?}

18 Mar 2016 19:24:21
Ed1 with Matip coming in next season and Lovren and Sakho, who do you think will be our fourth CB next year? With Kolo out of contract, do you see Skrtel staying?

{Ed001's Note - that seems very likely, sadly. I would rather we sold him and gave Toure one more year, but it does seem to be the plan to let Toure leave and Skrtel is unlikely to sell.}

18 Mar 2016 20:09:30
Saddening to see people abusing Skrtel who by far was brilliant under Klopp and haven't featured in months.

{Ed001's Note - who is abusing him? And he has never been brilliant. Apart from in terms of his ability to get an ridiculously high and undeserved wage by throwing his toys out of his pram when he wasn't sold by the club.}

18 Mar 2016 20:25:01
we look far better of without him, at least lovren and sakho know what each other is doing, I would have him as 4th choice behind toure, personally I would sell him in the summer esp as matip is coming.

18 Mar 2016 21:27:59
Begovic is not a good keeper and if we are looking we should aim our sights higher than a player who wrote his career off at 27 to sit on Chelsea's bench and who has already said in the not so distant past that he had NO interest in being our number one keeper.

18 Mar 2016 21:28:24
Subotic has been plagued by injuries over the past two seasons and has struggled with form, and been a peripheral figure at Dortmund, and in no way is he an improvement over Skrtel.

If Lovren and Sakho can stay fit and continue their recent form, Skrtel will struggle to get back in the team.

Matip will be replacing Toure in the summer, in the squad IMO.

18 Mar 2016 21:30:06
Hi Ed. Would you not say skrtel is likely to leave. I mean he is effectively fourth choice now with toure being the preferred bench option wince skrtel returned. With matip coming in skrtel will still be fourth choice. Personally I would like to see skrtel toure wisdom illori moved on with Lucas and Gomez able to deputise capably if needed.

{Ed002's Note - Skrtel is injured, Toure is cover. Gomez is far from useable as a centre back. This makes zippo sense.}

18 Mar 2016 21:34:34
I think we've looked better without Skrtel and while he has value, move him on. Matip, Ilori and if need be Toure (if we extended his contract) can cover. That's hardly abusive towards Skrtel and that's the attitude many people have I feel.

{Ed002's Note - Ilori has done a couple of league cup games - it seems idiocy to throw out others ahead of him.}

18 Mar 2016 22:04:55
id keep ilori and as for kolo for one more year as cover? nah lucas is better bet.

19 Mar 2016 01:10:10
Could Lucas be the 4 choice cb.

19 Mar 2016 02:44:20
Skrtel is an experienced option in case Matip struggles and either Lovren or Sakho get injured. Matip and Sakho with Lovren and Skrtel challenging and Lucas/ Illori backing up is a very strong set of CBs (maybe one too many but given injury record of some of these better to be safe than sorry)

18 Mar 2016 23:16:37
Ed002, Ilori would be what behind Matip, Lovren, Sakho, Lucas and Toure (if he stays in this scenario)? The only person he moves ahead of is Skrtel who is effectively replaced by Matip. I don't think it's too far-fetched, if Toure moves on and Skrtel stays Ilori would still be cover for injury/ cup games behind 5 other players.

This is assuming Wisdom moves on and I still don't know where Gomez would play.

{Ed002's Note - Skrtel is not replaced by Matip. Toure is not staying. Ilori has no future with Liverpool and Gomez is not ready to play CB at this level and will continue as a LB.}

18 Mar 2016 17:47:35
The more I think about it I'd rather play Dortmund than Braga or Prague.
At least we can get proper up for the game like against united, city, Chelsea, arsenal.
And when we are proper up for a game we can smash anybody (united, city, Chelsea, arsenal) where as we struggle against lower side usually (no disrespect to braga, Prague, Villarreal etc. ) but we maybe take the games for granted and struggle. Palace, Carlisle Newcastle for example.

And then if, big IF, we go through then we will carry that momentum through the semis and hopefully the final, knowing we had the two toughest ties and triumphed.

I'm excited and nervous and worried and a little bit optimistic all at the same time, who knows what the result will be but I know 100% I will have chills when the entire stadium fills with a chorus of YNWA on April 7th.

Believable10 Unbelievable3

18 Mar 2016 18:34:32
I quite like starting away aswell. Keep the score close, get a goal and finish the business at home, extra-time needed or not. Bring 'em on!

18 Mar 2016 18:54:08
April the 7th it will only the away fans who will sing YNWA.

18 Mar 2016 19:11:30
Dortmund sing it as well.

18 Mar 2016 19:44:03
Ye dortmund fans will show how to support win, lose or draw. It'll be a great occassion.

18 Mar 2016 20:04:22
A sea of red and yellow, a superb rendition of y. n. w. a from both sets of supporters, both grounds packed to the rafters, and a more friendly environment, chuck in the klopp factor and you have the tie of the round. Bring it on.

19 Mar 2016 02:41:03
Its going to be a great tie, the whole world will be watching us. playing against one of the best teams in Europe will show how far we have come under Klopp.

18 Mar 2016 17:45:32
Would like to see origi in place of sturridge and Allen in place of hendo for trip to Southampton. Just think they deserve a run out been very impressed with both when they've come off bench. and you can see hendo is not right.

Believable1 Unbelievable5

18 Mar 2016 18:00:02
I guess Allen will play as Milner is suspended.

18 Mar 2016 18:54:57
Milner will be replaced by a lb Moreno if fit again or Flanagan at right clyne left judging by previous games.
Tough to tell with hendo wether he needs more or less time on the pitch to get back to his best but hopefully klopp plus medical staff will suss that one! Allen if called upon to come in would do a solid job if called upon as you say performances off the bench have been good.
Sturridge the exact same as hendo for me tough to know if he needs more minutes or rest. although the anger/ disappointment he had going off and the fact that klopp took him off suggests to me he was giving him a breather to be ready for the weekend? Could be wrong though. Again completely agree that origi looks very good off the bench at the moment. Love how direct he is really uses his pace and power to good effect. although this is a little easier against tired legs but definitely seems to be progressing very well.

18 Mar 2016 17:07:02
Flanno has a new contract! Get in there!

Believable12 Unbelievable2

18 Mar 2016 20:06:01
A well deserved deal, gives other players hope that a bad injury does not have to spell the end, well done to the scouse cafu.

18 Mar 2016 21:28:59
Can't believe someone disagreed with you there kingkenny7!

18 Mar 2016 21:54:49
they have a disagree button so they feel the need to press it mr Dennis, probably disagree with this post.

19 Mar 2016 02:48:53
Haha there you go kk

In all seriousness, it does amaze me how many random trolls float around on this site clicking disagree.

18 Mar 2016 16:21:47
Didn't want Dortmund so early on, it would have been a great semi final or final but it would have been ideal for us to have one of the easier opposition for the quarters, just to get us really in contention for winning the competition. Huge fixture and it will bring a lot of attention as ed1 has said. But my confidence for going through isn't very high. If we do beat them though, I think we will go on to win it. This has to be a priority now, we won't make top 4 in the league let's be honest. They are still battling for the bundesliga, and hopefully they draw closer so that is deemed more a priority to them. We probably have the advantage of klopp knowing Dortmund but not the mental edge.

Will be liverpools biggest game in years if we go through.

Believable7 Unbelievable7

18 Mar 2016 17:12:17
Doesn't matter, Dortmund are the strongest team, better to play them now, if we win then great, if we lose then it's better to lose now rather than further on as we can concentrate on the league, plus its obviously a special game with the Klopp link so at least we get to see a special game as well (can't wait to see YNWA sung) Plus like the ed says it's a huge advertisement for LFC.

18 Mar 2016 17:38:11
Any one else think these draws have been a bit strange? I predicted spurs v dortmund an us v utd last round and now this 😕!

{Ed001's Note - nothing surprises me any more in footie. FIFA banned someone for 2 years for match fixing. The issue being he was the ref who told them he had been approached to fix a match. Says all you need to know about the running of the game.}

18 Mar 2016 18:57:35
I wouldn't write off top 4 just yet the way some teams are going. if we win our next 3 fixtures I'm nearly positive we'll be top 4 or within a point. so wouldn't write the league off completely just yet!

18 Mar 2016 21:31:38
There are only 3 more "rounds" to go - the quarter final, semi-final and the final. I rather we get play Dortmund now in the quarters as someone said earlier, we will get up for the big games, and we should be well pumped of for this one. If we get through, the semi and the final, we will definitely up for them under Klopp.

18 Mar 2016 15:41:38
Yesh, Its official- Reus, Gundogan is coming to Anfield. :)

18 Mar 2016 15:26:28
Hi Eds, it seems that we are being linked with a lot of free summer transfers or out of contract players. Do you know if this is going to be the plan for over the summer or is it just Klopp trying to get some players in so he has them for a full pre-season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained where I know of interest. Certainly Matip will be arriving, others you need to search the site for.}

18 Mar 2016 15:20:33
Ed001, what do you make of the draw?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I think we all knew it was going to happen before it did. I am glad though, it is exciting as hell and puts us back in the forefront of the media coverage of footie round the world. Out here they have barely mentioned the Champions League in the football coverage, when normally it is all about it. They even interrupted the Tues/Weds coverage with reports about us and United in the build up. Since the moment Klopp came in we have been front and centre of all the sports reporting, this game will keep us there whatever the results.}

18 Mar 2016 15:53:07
The one tie i did not want is the one we got, i guess it was meant to be, but now its locked in i'm excited. Regardless of the result it really shows how far we have come in such a short few months. Not bashing rodgers but as a comparison i would never have expected us to get out the group stages much less knock out man u and be in a quarter final against dortmund.

Will the cup final defeat against city spur them on to win this competition? Well on recent evidence we are more than capable. I am with ron on this now, bring em on and let's topple them and get to the semi's.

18 Mar 2016 16:52:04
And hopefully, Ed, in a position to capitalize on some more commercial opportunities. If nothing else, the so-called Klopp Effect has brought with it a spotlight which the club will hopefully take full advantage in their money-seeking (Mia) adventures! Facing Dortmund should only enhance that position, I would think.

Ahem.

Not to sound so cynically business-like! Haha!

As for playing his former team, it's a real test and opportunity for him and the club to show what they've got.

{Ed001's Note - they should take advantage of it, but the commercial office has shown no signs of doing so at all out here in the Middle East. It is still almost impossible to get any Liverpool merchandise in the area. The commercial dept is hopeless. I tried to get in touch with them, but they don't return calls. Hopeless really.}

18 Mar 2016 17:08:07
The merchandise department is a mess. I still haven't understood why in country of a billion where we have a significant following can't the ckub be concerned opening about a frigging shop. I share ed001s problems here. Getting any merchandise here is a pain . And then you see Manchester United fully capitalizing on it in several asian countries.

{Ed001's Note - the thing is I know a whole raft of sports shops here are desperate to get their hands on anything Liverpool-related. There are sports shops here that are selling kits from prior to us signing for Warrior still!}

18 Mar 2016 15:20:41
Does anyone know of a reliable ticket site where I can buy Dortmund v Liverpool tickets?

Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 15:29:55
I'll second that. I want to get over to Dortmund for that one but sure it's impossible as I've got no EL games registered this season. Any tips on how to get em would be appreciated.

18 Mar 2016 15:11:22
It just had to be didn't it, Dortmund is going to be fascinating. Liverpool's recent resurgence makes us one of the form teams in England but, if there's anything to be critical about, it's that we've only beaten teams in bad form, the last time we played a form team we got beat by Leicester. But that seems a life time ago and everything's changed since then. Dortmund are certainly a huge test and how we do against them will be an excellent yardstick to measure Klopp's progress, I'm anticipating two excellent games.

A few thoughts on last night. I was surprised how nervous we were for the first 30 minutes, there were a few moments were the defence panicked and our passing in midfield was wasteful, I feared we were in for a torrid night. We grew into the game though and across the board the team did great for the last hour or so.

I have doubts about Sakho but last night he was immense. Utd tried to put him under pressure early on and it didn't phase him at all. There were none of the heart in mouth moments that I associate with him just solid defending and neat possession.

I find it funny when posters talk about limited players like Toure and Lucas and how they're important because of their great attitude and professionalism then in the next sentence say that Milner should be sold this summer. Milner wants to be a CM but his best position is RW, last night he was asked to play LB and not only did he do well he threw his heart and soul into it. He was metronomic up and down the wing, he showed more defensive nous than Moreno has all season and he contributed in attack. He wasn't perfect but that's not the point, he was the epitome of team spirit, work ethic and selflessness. If there's a player our younsters should look up to it's Milner.

Coutinho, my oh my. Like the rest of the team he started off nervous but his goal was class personified. That's the Coutinho that's worthy of the Barcelona team. His later run through the heart of Utd's team just made me purr. I want to comment on his consistency but then I remind myself he's only 23. Liverpool needs to provide team mates worthy of him because he is a special, special talent.

Finally on Sturridge. I'm not sure he's having fun at the moment, he's not figured out his role in Klopp's team yet and is feeling isolated. I'm hoping he just needs to adjust and we'll soon see him back to his best. I do think he benefits from having a strike partner so I'd like to see Klopp give that a try. Origi's pace and movement make him suitable but I've been a disappointed by his end product since he started getting more game time. Benteke doesn't suit a Klopp team but I reckon Sturridge would love to play next to him and I'd like to see Klopp give a run out to that combination before the end of the season.

Southampton on Sunday and a chance to put daylight between us and midtable, come on Boys!

Believable6 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 15:19:19
Can't fault Milner at all top pro. Does what he does and does it well.

18 Mar 2016 15:36:46
I thought firmino was/ has been his strike partner no? Or have i been watching a different liverpool.

18 Mar 2016 16:04:03
With Sturridge its more of the case he is lacking in confidence but he is not basking himself in glory at the moment because he is not making the runs say Origi made last night when he came on Origi ran the channels and had two decent shots, personally myself I would be starting Origi at southampton ahead of sturridge to I've him a kick up the backside.

18 Mar 2016 16:46:28
I wouldn't say Firmino's been playing as an out and out striker. My read is that he's played a withdrawn role in front of the opposition's defense and picking up the ball from deep. The problem is Studge doesn't want to make the runs that Origi's been making to stretch the defense. He wants to drive at the full back, skin him and meg the keeper but he's got no one level or ahead of him distracting the other defenders and he gets crowded out.

I'm confident they'll figure it out though, Sturridge is still getting up to full match fitness and he's still figuring out Klopp's style. He'll catch up with everyone else and when he's up to speed he'll start tearing it up again.

18 Mar 2016 19:49:39
Studge has been out for onths. Ut wull take more than a handful if games to get his grove back.

18 Mar 2016 14:45:01
Apart from Barcelona and psg, dortmund are the one team in europe i do not want to play right now. They are on fire and on paper will smash us.

That said, we also managed to beat AC milan in 2005, who had one of the greatest sides ever assembled, with a team that comprised of players like dudek, riise, smicer, baros, cisse and traore.

It can happen but i can't see it.

Believable3 Unbelievable11

18 Mar 2016 15:16:25
They haven't played us yet!

18 Mar 2016 20:42:49
As much as I respect Dortmund I do not fear them, waving the white flag under klopp is not an option. If we want to return to the top table at home and in Europe then we have to stop being scared of teams and impose ourselves on them. Heads held high, chests out be positive, we are Liverpool fc and its 11 vs 11 of course we have a chance.

18 Mar 2016 13:53:59
Both officials from us and Utd should get together and issue bans to any fans that chant about any disasters as it will show fans that it is unacceptable and it'll show UEFA what consistant action looks like. UEFA should have taken action and put sanctions in place notifying fans who engage in illicit chants and/ or incite violence will incur large punishments for their clubs and will seek bans against them personally. Hopefully the European pan league will be set up with better government structure that will outlaw vile and punish the individuals concerned.

Apparently Ings will be the biggest every tribunal fee in English football. I think Liverpool should just pay up, it should have been settled a long time ago. He's a great player and I don't want to see Burnley ripped off.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I agree that Liverpool should have paid what Burnely originally wanted and that they will now be paying more. I am sorry to say that Liverpool has shown before that they care not for other clubs under the present regime and they have already delayed the tribunal which has upset Burnley. And you can add to that the situation with Bolton - I cannot think of any other Premier League club that would have denied their request.}

18 Mar 2016 13:54:13
I agree Ed that we should have just coughed up, or at least got close to it.

The whole Bolton thing is just not on as its effecting Jay's career which isn't fair.

18 Mar 2016 14:45:48
Any news on why Liverpool are doing these things Ed. I recall them being ridiculous in proceedings with Kovacic too.

{Ed002's Note - We are not going to get in to it G.}

18 Mar 2016 15:43:19
Fair do's Ed. cheers anyhow.

18 Mar 2016 13:16:16
Jordan Henderson played with illness and was vomiting at half time. Hats of to him, he really is willing to fight for this club. As a young man, model professional good ball player. he has my nod for the captaincy and i hope his detractors start to quieten down.

I bet you the Pool vs Dortmund games generate more interest than most of the CL quarter finals.

I am so pumped for this tie. How nice is it for liverpool to be involved in such an important game this late in the season? Makes me feel hope for the future under Klopp.

18 Mar 2016 14:59:09
One good thing about not meeting them in the final is playing 2 legs in each others stadiums - going to be awesome and if we survive I'd fancy our chances.

I do worry about Aubmeyang and Reus, but on the other hand we have Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge. I think it may come down to whether Can and Hendo play well and whether we can control midfield or whether they get enough time on the ball to unleash their forwards.

18 Mar 2016 12:38:16
Haha . it had to be. Klopp tempted fate yesterday.

Anyways, its good that we are playing the most entertaining ties. First United now Dortmund.

18 Mar 2016 13:05:08
It's a cliche, but in order to win the cup you have to beat some strong teams along the way. Beat Dortmund and who are we going to be frightened of?

Great performances against the mancs, Clyne and Sturridge won't have such difficult performances again and we are now organised better than we have been for ages. And now we need to keep it going at the weekend!

18 Mar 2016 15:11:44
A very good draw as it will show many of our fans what the Liverpool team will progress to over time. Also I think that Mamadou Sakho will own Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over the 2 legs and the tie will be an amazing spectacle.

That is the draw I i'd not want due to all the raw emotion behind it. well, let`s go out there and leave it all on the pitch in both games.

18 Mar 2016 13:16:36
It almost feels like we are playing against a family member or something, like you said lots of raw emotion, especially with Klopp and also the fans have great respect for each other their respective clubs.
One off the bucket list if can get a ticket to see the yellow wall but I've a feeling the return leg at Anfield could eclipse anything we have seen before.
Nervous/ excited at the same time optimistic as their players will no doubt play with great emotion.
These are the ties we look forward to and the ties our great club deserve YNWA.

18 Mar 2016 12:15:58
So we get the most difficult draw possible in Europa. Liverpool vs Dortmund
We were going to have to face them at some point so the earlier the better. The positive is if we beat Dortmund, we will be favorites to win the cup.

Dortmund got the most difficult draw 😎.

18 Mar 2016 12:03:09
Good game yesterday. looked like we could lose after the penalty, but the players did a good job of keeping their head up and playing.

Don't want to be negative, but was anyone else disappointed with the lack of goals, considering the space we had.

We had players in good positions, but we were often too slow to release the ball, that coupled with De Gea and some poor finishing at times, I think we could have easily scored a few more. Not taking anything away from the players and how well they did in a difficult game.

Coutinho is beautiful!

Thoughts on Sturridge, he obviously lacks a bit of match fitness, confidence and still working out how to play with the new players around him.

Does anyone agree he plays better as a second striker, where he can go into space and know another striker will be keeping the centre backs occupied.

I would like to see Origi play with Sturridge, with them having a fluid interchagning r.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 12:07:37
I honestly believe that ings will fit in much better. Sturridge runs into long through and slots away. He never is a one two player around the box, he holds onto the ball for far to long. Even when he's on fire he holds onto the ball too long. That cannot be denied.

Cue ed1 to tell me how wrong I am but I'm telling you ings will take his place.

18 Mar 2016 12:13:19
Origi deserves a start the way he has played in the past few games, stretching the opposition, and he and Sturridge need game time to get their goal scoring back.

So playing them together seems the best idea to me, at the expense of one of the three attacking mids.

18 Mar 2016 12:17:31
I agree he seems to play better with a second striker to distract the other CB and disrupt the defensive patterns, I think he's also at his most dangerous making runs off the CBs shoulder in behind. I too would love to see Origi/ Sturridge and Firmino in behind but I suspect Klopp will persevere with 4-2-3-1 as it's working for Firmino/ Coutinho nicely.

18 Mar 2016 12:26:14
Ings is a good player but I don't think he is as good as Sturridge.

Sturridge is clinical, if there is an opportunity to shoot first time he will, as he did when he was on top of his game. But he also has the ability to take a few touches keep the ball and make a better goal scoring chance.

Which is why he is better than Ings and Origi. Sturridge still backs his quality to take on a player, which may not be currently working for him but it will come back.

18 Mar 2016 12:28:41
You can play the 4-2-3-1 with one of the two playing on the wing and interchanging during the game.

Lallana though playing well currently drops to the bench in my preferred team. With him coming on to give Firmino or Cotuinho a rest when necessary.

18 Mar 2016 11:54:43
Hey Eds, apologies if this has been asked but what happens if the winners of the Europa League qualify for the Champions League via their league, I. E Dortmund? Does the extra champions league spot get passed to the runner up?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No.}

18 Mar 2016 12:17:42
Dortmund are out so it won't be them.

18 Mar 2016 11:27:42
Hi eds

Do you think Liverpool will fight the charges against them for illicit chanting? Isn't it a little corrupt if UEFA completely ignore United fans' illicit chanting but punish us for a minority who did it for 5 seconds? I'm proper flabbergasted.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would think it very unlikely they will fight any charges and there is nothing "corrupt" at all. There is no conspiracy against Liverpool and the club will accept it has, like all clubs, an element of DF fans, it will suck it up and move on.}

18 Mar 2016 12:39:06
It's not corrupt, there is no malice in it. It's just an example of a ridiculous and over-beaurocratic system whereby it doesn't matter how muich evidence is available, all that matters is the report of one very busy man whose job is to focus on the game itself. We deserve punishment for last night but their lack of ability to take evidence from a variety of sources to make decisions is another reason to add to the list woif why UEFA will eventually be broken up. The ref didn't include it in his report. what a load of nonsense.

18 Mar 2016 12:44:20
Umm, naive question . . . why is the crap still happening? The "Fergie was right" response at Anfield was brilliant, I thought, but then this. Very discouraging.

18 Mar 2016 12:49:17
I'm not denying that the club has its element of DF fans. The point is, why the hell should Liverpool be punished if United won't be punished for a more severe nature of the same crime? It doesn't make sense ed, and you can't blame people for thinking that something dodgy is going on when there is such a betrayal of logic on show from UEFA.

{Ed002's Note - You need to get over this thought that everything is a conspiracy and it is the fault of someone else. You need to put it aside and stop bleating.}

18 Mar 2016 13:08:33
Apologies ed, the bitter rivalry has only aggravated my anger about this. When you see your bitter rivals get away with everything and you don't, it's irritating.

So what's UEFA's reason? The referee recorded the chants in the match report?

{Ed002's Note - This is just getting tedious Nick. Being bitter is no way to go through life.}

18 Mar 2016 14:09:09
I know I know. thanks anyway.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome Nick. Think about unicorns and butterflies, your day will improve.}

18 Mar 2016 10:11:06
Hi eds. What could potential punishment be given that we have been charged by uefa.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would expect a fine, a strongly worded letter and a warning about the future behavior of the fans for Liverpool. It may be more of an issue for Manchester United as they are responsible for security as they wee at home.}

18 Mar 2016 12:26:38
Freudian slip Ed002 mate with the "wee at home"? . Thanks for the chuckle.

18 Mar 2016 11:54:02
Lallana doing enough to keep him in the team for next season (since the final he has woke up a beast)

Opinions.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 12:04:40
He has NOT done enough IMO, but he has shown that he has the ability. His end to the season will decide it, will he go back to sleep for the last 2 months or will he keep the momentum going?
I hope he does it, but he needs to demonstrate he is up for the fight.

18 Mar 2016 12:08:42
I like his effort but still no end product yet.
He needs a few goals and assists in the last chunk of season to be safe from the axe for me.

18 Mar 2016 12:18:06
I would still move Lallana on at the end of the season, purely for tactical reasons. He is too interchangeable with Coutinho, Firmino and some of the youngsters and I see a glaring need for an out and out winger. Ibe is taking time to develop and will take longer time and it is not a given that Markovic wil make the cut at the end of the summer (can he really play as a winger? ) . If nobody takes Benteke at the end of the summer, then the need for at least one effective winger to supply crosses becomes even more pressing, for next season.

18 Mar 2016 12:24:28
He's done enough to stay. In shanklys words you need 8 to carry the piano and three to play it. Coutinho, Sturridge and Firmino are players and capable of doing the spectacular, but Llalana is a Dynamo in midfield that makes the system so effective as he's all over the opposition every second of he game IMO.

He's also more than capable of creating and scoring himself and is underrated in that department. give it time and I suspect that despite the already noticeable improvement in form he will get even better.

18 Mar 2016 12:40:49
If we can get 20 mil for him then fine, otherwise he's showning why we wanted him in the first place and, just like Lovren, should be sticking around.

18 Mar 2016 13:01:25
he still holds on to the ball far too long and doesn`t release it in rhythm. The prob is when he does release it in rhythm, those are his best games BUT still does too much on the ball with little end product. He`s a luxury player that is wasted on the bench due to his fee and wages IMO as Couts, and Firmino are better than him so again, why is he here?

18 Mar 2016 11:41:22
Are flares not allowed in stadiums, because I have seen them at so many games around Europe.

I like seeing flares and think they should be allowed.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

18 Mar 2016 11:54:22
If it was adults only then I wouldn't see it as a problem, but as a parent I wouldn't be impressed with seeing flares going off whilst with my young kids.

18 Mar 2016 12:05:23
Of course they're not allowed 😄.

18 Mar 2016 12:41:42
You mean the stick of fire that billows smoke in the tightly packed crowd? No they are not allowed.

18 Mar 2016 10:18:13
why are UEFA charging us for illicit chanting last night, but nothing happened with Man Utds chanting last week.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 10:35:37
Well you can't deny what happened last night.

The real question is why didn't they sanction Man Utd last week? It is ridiculous that they didn't and the end result was worse crowd trouble last night.

Well done UEFA, complete bunch of feckless corrupt clowns.

18 Mar 2016 10:43:59
this is so UEFA, It shows they will lick the butt of anybody with money. they charge us and gave united a clean chit even going as far as saying that the ground referees didn't report any chants in their match daty reports, where in the explicit chants were actually bought to the notice by a referee. however, Uefa claims otherwise, which shows they shat up referees. i am sure they will charge us whatever they can. pretty sure they are pissed off at us knocking out there adorable manchester club out.

18 Mar 2016 10:48:51
Where we singing illicit chants like? I didn't hear them but I did hear always the victim ect ect and they ain't even getting charged UEFA is a joke nout gets said last week when the full away end where singing them and we didn't sing jack and then fellani is flinging windmills about over the 2 legs and gets one yellow card could of been sent off with 4 yellow cards over the 2 legs and UEFA don't take no action in the first leg and he does exactly the same in the 2nd leg. They are fickle as hell absaloute joke run by a bunch of clowns.

18 Mar 2016 11:01:01
right fellani got off. and they are denying illicit chants that were audible on TV sets . there defiance has led to bitterness among some LFC fans . although i totally condemn the actions like fighting and setting up fires, and hooliganism but i also believe if they would have treated the matter rightly and justly in the first leg it wouldn't have come to this.

18 Mar 2016 11:07:11
Sanctions or no sanctions aside. any lfc fan that stooped to illict chants and inciting violence has lost all credibility.

18 Mar 2016 11:02:56
When you've got someone on the Board of Directors at Man Utd . who's also a member of UEFA Executive Committee. maybe there's your answer!

It's a total disgrace after the Mancs vile chants last week.

18 Mar 2016 11:23:29
no one would/ should have a problem with us getting charged for that if they had charged Utd last week. It utterly defies belief and Liverpool should expressly and publicly point that out. Which ever idiots were singing it, nice one you morons you've dragged the clubs name through the mud and left Utd looking like victims. The chants are vile, grow up and pack it in.

18 Mar 2016 11:34:47
In reply to above post. Quite a number of times the united fans were singing murderers and always the victim. Not isolated groups but many thousands at a time. Don't know whether you could hear it on the TVs. Very loud in the ground and not just kids. Grown men and women. Some of our fans responded with the Munich chants but were told by some of us other older fans to shut it. Looks like we will come out of this the worst as usual. It's Liverpool so we are guilty. Always the same. There are a few photos showing the lads above us getting attacked but no doubt that again will be our fault.

18 Mar 2016 12:08:56
Agree with others, you can't condone any hooliganism or offensive chanting. Why we concern ourselves with them I have no idea.

18 Mar 2016 10:23:05
Apparently there was a fight between the supporters in the end inside the stadium.

18 Mar 2016 11:20:43
The incidents were being provoked before the match when Manchester United fans hung a banner which read 'murderers' along with the date of the Hillsborough disaster in Salford and UEFA's apparent blindness/ deafness after the first leg made certain parties feel like they will not be sanctioned for any of their behaviour! Our so-called act of provocation is here to see https://youtu.be/b01S2ovDZyc

18 Mar 2016 10:16:49
What is the reason why so many teams back off Sakho when he has the ball? Statistically one of the most accurate passing CBs in the PL but rarely gets pressured when we are spreading it around at the back.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 10:35:59
They're scared of him.

18 Mar 2016 10:50:27

18 Mar 2016 11:03:10
Ever met him? I have several times now and still never been brave enough to ask for a photo haha.

18 Mar 2016 11:04:52
Would u run at him he looks like a mad bastard haha.

18 Mar 2016 10:06:05
we have been charged for illicit chants? what were some singing? hope they are banned as they have tarnished the result!

Believable6 Unbelievable3

18 Mar 2016 11:35:46
FYI, According to the Guardian, apparently there were chants of `Munich` when the fights broke out.

18 Mar 2016 10:05:40
Apparently we've been charged with setting off fireworks and illicit chanting by UEFA. The fireworks one is fair enough but illicit chanting? I heard nothing (though my stream is poor) from our fans - and it seems a bit of a piss given how audible and frequent United's chanting was both at Anfield and Old Trafford. Can anyone confirm that our fans we're making some chants in poor taste? As I say my stream sucks so I may have just missed it.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

18 Mar 2016 10:17:17
Apparently we have been charged with illicit chanting but United haven't!? How is that possible?

18 Mar 2016 10:56:22
With UEFA all irregularities are possible.

18 Mar 2016 11:09:23
Not to minimize or make it seem better than manU, but it must have only been a andful of the 3000 in attendance. Apparantly some manc fans pock it up on their cell video so fair enough. But ye uefa should have made a stand last week.

18 Mar 2016 10:05:22
Unbelievable! I've just seen that UEFA have charged both clubs for last nights trouble as expected but also we've been charged with illicit chanting! after last week nothing done?! and the banner above the motorway?
I know the banner has no bearing on UEFA but if that's not inciting trouble I don't know what is,
Disgraceful, I really don't understand these organisations at times.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 09:59:10
Thought we were the better team over 2 legs, deserved to win both legs and ultimately outclassed them.

Mignolet will rarely have 2 games were he has so little to do, but he made no mistakes so good on him.

Clyne was really jekyll and hyde over 2 legs - excellent at Anfield, but looked over awed at Old Trafford and was a weak link there.

Milner was good over both legs and definitely, through positioning alone, more solid than Moreno would have been at Old Trafford - that Klopp picked him over Moreno suggests he simply doesn't trust the Spaniard to do the job.

Lovren was excellent over both legs and looks to be developing a good relationship with Sakho (a pairing many of us were calling for since he first signed) .

Sakho was good in the first leg and possibly man of the match in the second - his distribution was excellent, his vision from the back allowed us time on the ball and in term of defending he was at the heart of the defence at Old Trafford - if he and Lovren can continue this form we may finally start to see our defence solidify.

Henderson was very good over both legs in my opinion - perhaps a little more so at Anfield, but still good at Old Trafford and realistically he could have scored in both legs - if the lad can add goals to his game he will a beast. Still carrying an injury as we know but all the signs are there that he will get over it an be better than ever.

Emre Can - arguably the best player over both legs - bossed the midfield, constantly broke up play, didn't allow them to settle and was a real calming influence: especially important that he broke up their attacks before they could really get going, could be a huge player for us going forward.

Lallana - probably the best we have seen him play yet. Tireless in his work rate and actual, effective contributions in the attacking third. In this form he can do damage and create chances - he is in the squad on merit, long may he continue.

Coutinho - a constant menace over both legs and a goal of real class at Old Trafford that really settled the team: they say big players score big goals and it's exactly what he did. Looks to be coming into form again.

Firmino - another player who is tireless, works hard for the team and provides a real edge up front. His movement off the ball is excellent and he is a very difficult player to mark over the course of the game. He and Coutinho look to have a good understanding as well.

Sturridge - he'd probably admit himself that he wasn't at his best for these 2 games. I would still say, however, that his movement, the positions he takes up and his link-up with team mates still caused problems for United: he is just back from injury so the sharpness is probably not quite their yet, but I think it will definitely return.

Believable4 Unbelievable5

18 Mar 2016 10:58:23
Milner didn't play the 1st leg. He had an illness.

18 Mar 2016 11:01:21
Moreno was injured for the 2nd leg that's why he wasn't picked, he picked up a hamstring problem in the training session the day before the match and aside from the start was decent for the first time in a while in the first game.

Milner can't have been good over both legs because he only played the second leg!

18 Mar 2016 11:27:55
Moreno was injured with a hamstring, otherwise probably would have played.

18 Mar 2016 09:48:35
Sincerely hope some of the Sakho doubters I see on here regularly are enjoying their humble pie this morning. He was an absolute rock last night, can't praise him enough. Hope this growing partnership of Lovren/ Sakho continues to flourish! Happy Friday everyone. ynwa.

Believable10 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 10:33:18
Iv been critical of him at times but fair play to the man for that performance what a rock.

18 Mar 2016 14:01:56
Don`t worry, they`llbe back as soon as he makes a mistake in a game.

18 Mar 2016 09:33:41
Hey lfc fans . It's a been a while
Ok great win last night for many reasons and it's good to see Liverpool getting further in competitions unlike thenrodgers period (sorry had to say it)

But I will say this. I am sure clyne will not play that badly again for a long time because I didn't recognise him at all

And I know it's an away game so expect pressure but I just thought the midfield was so open and easy to get past and lucky sakho an lovren played well it looked as if Man Utd had three extra players in the middle . Why was that? Any thoughts people.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

18 Mar 2016 10:11:52
We're a lit mire solid with lucas sitting infront of back four stopping the threats at source. But at the same time we then lose a bit in attacking quickly.
Its all a judgement call and Klopp seems to be calling it right atm.
Where rodgers called it wrong.
Thats why they get the big bucks.

18 Mar 2016 10:13:01
Couldn't disagree more mate, emre bosses the midfield himself and with a sick but still pretty decent hendo, your thug in the middle was poor and predictable, it looked like youse came through mid easily as the ball bi passed it most of the time straight to your wide players who was good Last night partially martial,

18 Mar 2016 11:13:25
The energy between hendo amd can is thei biggest strength and can be their weakness too. Constantly chasing all game, they can and will be toen to shreds by technical teams. And in any case we've seen that it is quite easy to get beyond our press because once u get a touch past hendo and can its open season! Luckily there aren't that many teams good enough to do that!

18 Mar 2016 11:15:34
Hes stong, gets stuck in, but loses the ball with silly passes way to easy. He CAN be frustrating to watch at times. he's a pro . I don't believe all that he's young makarky . He should be able to make 15 yard passes . That goes for anyone else as well. Losing the ball needlessly is not acceptable in my eyes . And he is one of our biggest culprits.

18 Mar 2016 09:00:44
Would like to say emre can has been brilliant last few weeks. Has really stepped up and deserves some praise.

Believable8 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 09:05:25
Totally agree he's become a right powerhouse in midfield.

18 Mar 2016 09:29:00
He looks to be really learning a lot under klopp, his tacking and movement seem to have come on loads. As ed says below the spine of the seam looks great now and still so young and only going to get better. Fingers crossed when fully fit flanno can claim the rb spot. I fully believe we can sell benteke replace in squad with ings and use all the mo way to land a top top Kepler, think probably give Moreno or smith one more year to improve and take the lb spot.

18 Mar 2016 09:35:53
Bring on the Quarter Final Draw.
People have been saying who they don't want us to get, but I guarantee, none of the other teams will want to be drawn against us.

18 Mar 2016 10:07:32
Is Can starting to remind anyone of Didi?

I do like Lucas and think he is underestimated but it's nice to see Can winning balls without giving away silly free kicks. And it's not that just Can is playing better, I think its not the individual but the partnership of hendo and can. They compliment each other well. Lovern and sakho case in point too.

18 Mar 2016 10:13:00
Bang on he's really improving, I would also say he is moving ahead of Henderson as it stands.

Not slagging Henderson off and I'm also aware he's playing with an injury, but can is really stepping up to the plate.

18 Mar 2016 10:37:21
He was absolutely ripped to bits by some on chat last night until Coutinho scored.

18 Mar 2016 08:48:29
Greetings Eds, as you made mention in your last review of the game the boys are starting to adjust to the way Klopie wants to play, what a game with both sides going head to head with both attack and pressing. Just 2 points i'd like to get your opinion on again if possible.

1st : You mentioned last week that its still early to judge Kirko and Lov as a partnership, are they heading the right direction in terms of forming the partnership Klops wants?

2nd : Your view on Hendo and Can display last night? Just my opinion but the latter is proving to be a player we can't do without if not 1 of the best in league on current form.

Hapy friday all.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - 1. Yes, clearly they are beginning to gel together. There are some very good signs appearing.

2. I think people are underrating the job Hendo is doing, allowing Can more freedom with his work. Though he struggled last night after the first half hour, he has been doing a good job since he returned from injury.}

18 Mar 2016 09:08:16
Hendo was ill appernatly - vomitting and stuff. Just ashame he missed that sitter. could have done a lot of good for his confidence scoring at OT.

18 Mar 2016 09:27:57
I'm looking forward to see the Lovren-Sahko partnership, just how Alderweireld and Vertonghen establish theirs.

18 Mar 2016 09:34:05
Yeh imagine him scoring running over to the corner and spewing everywhere😂 it must be old Trafford because I feel abit queezy when I s3e it too.

18 Mar 2016 09:37:25
Strange to send out a player who was vomiting and is still clearly hampered by injury.

18 Mar 2016 07:18:06
Oh i mentioned i was scared yesterday. And with right reasons too i knew united would attack us and they somewhat tried to. when the penalty went in i had a sinking feeling. burried myself under the quilt didn't watch until i heard the commentator scream Sturridge! and it hit the bar, had a even worse sinking feeling, added the pillow to the burial items. and then heard commentator shout Henderson! and it went over . oh my what a waste . went back again inside heard rojo missed his chance and then heard the moment of absoulte magic, i only heard it Couuutinho! what a goal and the quilt flew with the pillow. only downside the flying pillow broke my grand parents old clock-photo. watched the match with pop-corns there onwards. EL quaterfinal . Bring anyone ON!

Believable3 Unbelievable5

18 Mar 2016 07:22:11
Lol, they were 2-0 down of course they were going to attack us but we also knew it would open them up for the counters which we did very well- just didn't take the clear chances we created. Great game though, feel we are improving by the game at the moment.

18 Mar 2016 10:19:31
We were lucky enough. they had chances for 2-2
And even to take the lead. But mata was poor
Couthinos goal though well taken was due to utds full back being missing.
That instant changed a good half for utd to a all but certain victory for us.

18 Mar 2016 06:25:25
where do you think we need to strengthen in the summer ed001?
would also be interested as to which players you think should be brought in. cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - we need a keeper and left back as the main priorities. Everything else is not vital. They are desperate needs though. I don't know who though, I got asked months ago to write an article about the best left and right backs in the world and the only reason it took me months to do the right backs and that the left back one is still not done, is purely because of the lack of quality full backs around. At times I have liked the look of Gaya from Valencia, but watching him closely last night and he is as poor defensively as Moreno. Like Moreno he relies on pace rather than ability, reading of the game or positioning. Though he does offer very good delivery. We might need to hope Smith or Moreno can be taught how to defend.

As for keeper, personally I would suggest Zieler, he seems to offer the best all round package for a team that needs a quick fix. He has lived in England before, so he wouldn't struggle to settle and speaks English fluently. He is also a very good keeper.}

18 Mar 2016 07:01:32
I would like to add a couple more addition.
Desperately need a RW. Someone who has pace and trickery. Very much like Matrial / Mahrez mound. His pace won him the penalty, you just can't handle pace.
A world clas CDM/ CM. A proper £30 mill Player and not messing around. We lack discipline and passing perfection in the middle.
Rest on the basis of outgoings.

{Ed001's Note - we have a central midfielder coming in and Stewart for the defensive role. We do not need to throw away money so you FIFA players can masturbate over them. As for the right wing, we have a whole host of young wingers, again it is throwing away money due to a lack of patience. Develop what we have, not spunk money on needless buys so that we can lose any hope of getting quality young players to sign for us in the future.

Let's give Klopp the chance to develop them, that is what his main strength is. No more of this collecting players like Brendan did that you want.}

18 Mar 2016 07:27:10
Totally agree Ed, develop what we've got rather than blowing money on someone who may not settle and will need patience.
Just have patience with the youth players, it will pay off.

18 Mar 2016 07:46:24
Correct me if I am wrong Ed.
Markovic future is uncertain and I would personally allow Lallana to move on which give us only 3 youngsters for the wide role. Ibe, Kent and Ojo. I would defo add one world class Winger and bed the three on the other side.
Stewart is certainly in my books to play for the next game. I would move on Milner and bring a CDM which will push Hendo and Can further ahead and release the shackle from defensive duties.
These two signings along with a keeper and LB would take us back into Top 2 or 3 next season.
I don't think they are money wasting. Two paotiona which we have never filled in long time.

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - one world class winger? Stick to FIFA because you are dreaming. You are talking about fantasy crap. This is real life, we are not going to get a world class winger. We need to develop one.}

18 Mar 2016 08:08:28
What is wrong with people lallana for me is good enough, he works hard can use both feet and is really starting to push forward under klopp if fifa give him an upgrade will people like him more. Markovic will hopefully get a run in the team as he could be a real top top talent and very exciting. I think milner, allen, benteke maybe even lucas even though i think he is brilliant all need to move on and let's start giving the younger ones more game time. Gomes can cover lb, ings will be back and then get a new keeper and that will be a winner for me.

18 Mar 2016 08:22:35
any knowledge as to what klopp wants to do with markovic eds?

{Ed002's Note - There won;t be any decision at this time but Liverpool know that there is interest in him and the player will not want to be pushed to the fringes of the team again.}

18 Mar 2016 08:48:21
Im sure a lot of LFC fans on this site including me want us to sign a new top quality winger. But like Ed001 said, where is that 'top quality winger' going to come from? Does anyone honestly think Bale, Reus, Moura, Douglas Costa or Robben will want to come to LFC right now? It may be time to give Kent, Ibe, markovic and Ojo their chance in the first team than splurge 15-20 million on decent wingers who may be no better than what we already have. Ed002's list of wingers the club has had watched includes Gokhan Tore, El Ghazi, Nkoudou etc. Do we really need these players and are they going to come in and set the league alight? I very much doubt it because all of them lack experience and play in low quality leagues (no disrespect intended) .
Personally, a top GK and a LB will do for me. If things still do not get better, then may be the club could look at a winger and CM next January.

18 Mar 2016 09:03:36
"Spunk Money", now there's a line I wasn't expecting to read whilst eating my breakfast, bon appetite Ed.

{Ed001's Note - I am sure it made it taste all the better mate.}

18 Mar 2016 09:38:24
You might be thinking of Ed2 there 😈.

{Ed001's Note - ah no, that is Ed007 who thinks of Ed002.}

18 Mar 2016 09:54:27
I don't even play an instrument but I'm going to learn just to start the band "Spunk Money"

18 Mar 2016 11:16:45
I'd be fine if we only got one new signing in a genuine first team contender at GK to compete with Migs, having said that, looking at the other positions

1) I personally don't mind the LB issue as I think Smith can make the step up if Moreno fails to improve defensively, or if not him then worst case switch Flanno to LB (leaves us a bit exposed on the right but that's a worst case outcome)

2) Def agree no need for CM with Can playing well with Hendo, Grujic to come in and lots of alternatives like Stewart

3) I would be perfectly happy with Markovic, Ibe and Ojo competing for the "pacy winger" option should we need one, and Coutinho, Firmino, Llalana remaining as our "A team" with Milner as utility backup. To be fair though if we could somehow find a Sanchez type character and we let go of Benteke and perhaps even Milner at a decent price then I'd go for it. could jump us forward a year or two in terms of development IMO

4) no need for another striker or CB (assuming we keep Skrtel as backup)

18 Mar 2016 03:18:38
ed001 could I please have another one of your match reviews for those of us who had to work tonight, always enjoy your thoughts on these matters, sad to hear about the crowd trouble, but I cannot help feeling uefa should have took action after the 1st leg. what a way for countinho to score his 1st goal vs man utd by the way. Cheers pal.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - It was not a vintage performance, we were really poor for long periods of the first half, and allowed them to put us under pressure until United got a penalty and converted it. Then the pressure was really on and I feared for us, though we had been creating chances, De Gea looked in top form again and our passing was awful. Then Couts produced a moment of magic. A slice of pure genius and United crumbled. They completely lost heart and gradually we took charge. That is the most concerning thing, as regard United, the way they just gave up once we equalised. For us, the worry is how much the pressure was telling until Coutinho popped up to turn Varela inside out. Have to say, it was shockingly bad defending by Smalling, once more, his positional sense is woeful.

Mignolet - didn't really get called upon, other than for the pen, except for kicking a few clearances. Sadly he did his usual job on them and made a mess of them. No blame for him on the goal conceded, he never really had much else to test him, apart from one cross which saw him rooted to his goal line and the defence stood around watching looking for an offside.

Clyne - what can I say? Could have got himself sent off very easily. He was utterly hopeless. This is what happens when someone is able to get at him. He can not handle someone who is bigger, stronger and faster than him. He doesn't know how to position himself, he just keeps trying to use his pace and strength to cope, rather than changing his game. Awful game for him. Hopefully this time he will learn from it and not concede needless penalties. The worry is that he will now get targeted for the rest of the season.

Lovren - solid and, while less obviously good than Sakho, he was very good. Made one mistake when he played a bad pass after moving out with the ball around the edge of our box, other than that he was very good. All of the successful United attacks came down the flanks for a reason.

Sakho - he and Lovren are beginning to show real signs of a partnership developing. They were excellent. They really need help from their fullbacks now, as they were able to break up anything that came at them through the centre. He did take a few chances in possession, which is always going to be a risk, but the results tend to be worth it, as he opens up space ahead of him when the opposition are drawn to him. Some really good incisive passing from him at times as well.

Milner - struggled positionally at times, allowing too much space and time. Other than that, he was good. To be honest, I think fullback should have been his position all along, but it might be too late for him to learn the positioning now.

Henderson - looked good early on, but clearly faded in the second half and was struggling to keep up with the game. Broke up the play, got involved in attacks, but then gradually became less and less involved as the first half wore on. The second half he was really struggling and it was no surprised he came off early.

Can - excellent, grew as the game went on to dominate the whole United midfield almost singlehandedly. Not faultless, there were still a few errors, but his overall play makes up for it completely. It is looking a real partnership in there with Hendo. Our spine is really beginning to take shape.

Lallana - showed some incredible bits of skill, but still needs to add end product to his game. Very rarely do his twists and turns create a shooting chance. He did have a good game though it is something he needs to look at.

Coutinho - what can I say? He was sensational, unplayable, brilliant on the ball. He was running through the centre of their side like they were just training cones at times. The goal was world class. Truly world class. Only the very best can produce that finish at the end of a run like that. While it did help that Smalling did not come over to help out the full back, he destroyed that lad so badly that LVG took him off at half time.

Firmino - once again he was everywhere, chasing back, racing forward, breaking up play in midfield, skipping past players in attack. If he mans up he will be special. Bravery is the weakest part of his game. His touch is sublime at times though.

Sturridge - really looks short of confidence. He is taking too many touches constantly, looking for options and then not making up his mind which to pick. It will come, he just needs a run of games. At one point he was the one racing back into our right back area to cover for Clyne, tackled the ball back, played some good passing and then popped up in their half in the same move. The signs are there that the lad still has the quality, he just needs to get his confidence back.

Allen - ran around a lot but did not really achieve anything. He has been excellent when coming on as a sub ahead of the midfield, looked lost when playing in the centre of it once more. Still, it was a necessary sub as Hendo was looking done at that point.

Origi - offered more directness and sharpness when he replaced Sturridge. Created himself a couple of good shooting opportunities. If he can start putting some away there will be no stopping him.

Benteke - didn't have long and showed some good hold up play but he still is not doing enough. Both times Origi shot the ball was spilled by De Gea and he was stood watching on the edge of the box. If he was alert and sniffing, like a goalscorer should be, he would have had a chance of getting to the ball. Says it all that Allen was the only one closing it down the second time.

The important thing is that we are through and they aren't. That is what matters most. Klopp's really beginning to make us into a team.

Sorry this took a while!}

18 Mar 2016 06:51:06
Spot on Ed. And the fact they didn't create anything despite going for it presses me. Good team back bone.

{Ed001's Note - the only thing they created, really, was knots in Clyne's legs as he twisted himself inside out.

One thing I have to say, what on earth does Fellaini have to do to see red? He throws one arm up and out, so it can't be for leverage, as is claimed, or both arms would go up and then be swung down, not out. The fact he is just throwing out the one at an opponent tells you it is deliberate and intentionally malicious. The guy is a vile thug who is going to hurt someone badly one day.}

18 Mar 2016 07:08:26
First half was terrible. Got so nervous, made me think we'd throw it away. Realized at half-time that aside from Coutinhos sublime goal Sturridge hit the woodwork, De Gea made a great save on Couts shot and Hendo blasten over when he should have scored. Suddenly felt a lot better knowing we can play a crap half and still have the quality players to do some damage. Nice to see the lads basically control the game in 2nd half aswell. They are learning how to play "european" games, step by step. Can horrible first 15-20, then MOTM for me.

18 Mar 2016 07:08:43
UTD did create couple of good scoring opportunities which went begging. Milner leaving lingard free header inside the box. Marcus Rojo missing a sitter.
Coutinho is world class. More than the goal. His
Run from the middle dribbling 4 players to set up Sturridge was simply outstanding.

18 Mar 2016 08:22:12
If I'm thinking of the same incident is argue that it was lallanas fault that Lovren have the ball away, have him a horrifically awkward pass under pressure.

18 Mar 2016 08:45:36
Totally agree edd with your breakdown of the game. I do find coutinhio very frustrating though with possession and in front of goal. He does all the hard things easily and struggles with the easy chances or passes. He has the potential to become the leagues best though. A point on sakho aswell, his passing in general is superb probably the best I've seen this year from his position, really gets us on the front foot. Can has the potential do captain this side for years, he's staring to boss the middle.

18 Mar 2016 10:18:16
Could not agree more with that ed. and fellaini. crikey, this guy is actually vile. He is a tad worse than Diego Costa in my opinion. Costa has a really hot temper and is reactionary (most of the time) . Fellaini is calculated and malicious. What kind of human being thinks it's okay to needlessly elbow people in the face during a football match? The guy is a complete s***stain, and it's a disgrace that UEFA didn't ban this runt, and it's also a disgrace that this guy hardly gets red cards for his cowardly efforts.

18 Mar 2016 10:32:37
Sturridge is lacking confidence. The fact that in a team where behind him is 3 players who will get on the ball and link play he needs to stop dropping back trying to be coutinho, firmino and lallanna. He looked most dangerous running in behind. He should be told to stay doing figure of eights between the centre backs. Ed it looks to me like he doesn't trust the rest of the lads to get the ball to him?

{Ed001's Note - it is just the way he plays, he likes to mix it up, especially when a team is playing deep, like United were. No space to run in behind them, so he dropped off into space.}

18 Mar 2016 10:59:35
Flanno on right, Smith on left for next game.

18 Mar 2016 06:13:43
Nervous start to yesterday, but ended up being a truly top day. Paddy's Day, so had to join in the craic obviously, componded when we played with calm and assurance and dumped united out of Europe. Totally deserved to beat them over the 2 legs, Can was incredible last night, as was Sakho. Ferguson's face was a picture and bot and Van Gaal were tripping over their jowels by the end of the game. Take Brada, Sparta.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 05:02:35
Big thanks to all the players and staff for the brillant performance during both legs. Sakho and Lovren were rock solid at the back and the brazilian Magician was superb but the one who impressed me most was Emre Can. He seemed to have up his game and during recent games he was outstanding in midfield. Hope he continues like that in our future games.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

18 Mar 2016 05:21:31
I think a top CM next to Can would do wonders for our team next season. Hendo will be an option but not first choice because of his injury problems and Grujic and Chirivella are not ready yet for regular first team football. An experienced CM would be a priority for me this summer, along with a new GK and winger of course.

18 Mar 2016 05:51:24
It depends Indian. If Klopp see Can as a deeper midfielder, then we should buy a top class CM to play alongside him. If he wants to push Can higher up, then a top class holding midfielder. Henderson should be dropped. Can't pass, can't shoot, and couldn't protect the back 4. I am struggling to find any positive for him and a place next season.
He should first and foremost need to sort out his injury.

18 Mar 2016 06:21:02
What's wrong with Henderson exactly? He played pretty well too and went close to scoring a number of times.

18 Mar 2016 07:04:37
Man utd would have killed for Hendo in their team last night. Suspect most of the other top 8 sides would also want him too for his dependability and all round skills.

Problem is he's been injured of late and vomiting last night, can't believe how much stick the guy gets.

{Ed001's Note - it is embarrassing that people are on the back of a player that has been proven to be vital to us.}

18 Mar 2016 07:44:23
The guy was ill last night, was throwing up at half time, and still went back out to play. And he was still better than most of their team. Its games like that that show why he is our captain.

18 Mar 2016 08:44:40
I think what Klopp needs to decide is where Lucas is going to be predominantly playing next season - midfield or defence.

If it's as a a back up defender then Skrtel and Ilori should go. If it's in midfield then that's another body in there and there will be no room for a other central player.

Like ed002 says there needs to be squad space for any incoming players!

18 Mar 2016 08:52:22
TBH Ed001, i do not want Hendo to leave at all. The problem is the lack of depth in our CM position when it comes to experience. Chirivella, Grujic, Allan and Stewart are still learning leaving only Can and Hendo as our senior options. Klopp does not seem to favor Lucas in a 2 man midfield so maybe looking at an experienced CM might be an option for the club this summer. But if Klopp believes the kids are ready to push Can and Hendo, then that is great.

{Ed001's Note - I would rather let the kids gain experience than buy someone to ensure they can't.}

18 Mar 2016 08:59:47
Hendo will become himself again soon just git to give him time.

18 Mar 2016 09:24:23
as I keep saying we need to stop blocking the youngsters path to the 1st team, let them learn as they play.

18 Mar 2016 09:49:13
People forgetting already how good Henderson was post foot injury and how good steward was looking just a couple weeks ago before his injury, the futures bright.

18 Mar 2016 10:29:52
I guess it all depends on whether we can win the league with the players we have. What's our ambition - 4th place or the league title?

I like the Henderson/ Can partnership but I certainly wouldn't be against a top class centre mid being brought in, someone in the Luka Modric ilk. Hendo is a 'play the way you're facing' midfielder and Can is turning into a real powerhouse - I think we need a centre mid that can play on the spot in tight areas, a player that can continuously get the ball to our advanced players when the space is tight.

18 Mar 2016 14:20:28
Hi Ed totally agree. It would of been nice if Hendo took that chance and scored that goal, I still think his the best player we have arriving late in the box. If he can do it more often at the right moments he can get more goals. This will help the team even more, people must get off his back. You try and play they way he has with injuries and sickness, you'll be stretched off in 5mins. Ed001 what kind of player is Grujic i haven't seen him play how do you see him fitting in?

{Ed001's Note - I have not seen him play either, sorry.}

18 Mar 2016 01:30:38
Brilliant tonight! If we had played rubbish - which we most certainly did not - it would have been hell on here - but we played the Mancs in front of their very abusive crowd and cane up trumps. It shows something when the Theater of Dreams sort of emptied out very early. What a nightmare.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 05:36:19
They clearly weren't leaving early to avoid the rush, they were in the thick of it. If they'd have stayed til the end it would have been the quickest exit of OT any of them would have experienced.

18 Mar 2016 01:45:15
Mingolet would never get beaten on his near post like that.

Believable1 Unbelievable5

18 Mar 2016 03:38:30
I wouldn't use terms like "never" when referring to Mignolet in that context.

18 Mar 2016 04:33:44
tell that to suarez.

18 Mar 2016 05:23:11
If Man Utd had Mignolet instead of De Gea as their first choice GK, they would be in a relegation battle, i'm 100% sure of that. DDG makes the entire Man Utd defense look half decent. Without him, they are royally f****d.

18 Mar 2016 05:42:26
Except that goal DDG was rock solid, While Migs was again guilty of not dealing corners.

18 Mar 2016 06:22:33
I said those exact words to my friend Indian! And I also think it true - the amount of times De Gea's heroics have spared United's blushes this season is insane - they'd be miles down the league without him.

18 Mar 2016 07:29:44
I've seen Mignolet beaten on his near post more times than I can remember this season.

18 Mar 2016 09:00:48
Agree Ron. Ramsey's goal for Arsenal immediately springs to mind when the was trickled past him at the near post. Having said that he has looked better of late but he still doesn't command his box enough. The Lingard header last night was laughable from Migs as was the Mata chance. Both times the ball is looped in the air 7 yards from goal, just deal with it man! Buzzing about the result though well played lads! Could you imagine how we'd all feel if the boot was on the other foot! I'd not leave the house for a month! Ha! I love beating the Mancs at any time but to put them out of Europe like that is just a dream come true! YNWA!

17 Mar 2016 23:33:34
And that is how you do business!

Can, Couts and Kirikou were "BOOM" tonight as Klopp would put it.

Dortmund
Braga
Bilbao
Sevilla
Villarreal
Shakhtar
Sparta Praha

Tasty.

Clyne was run ragged and made numerous errors. Maybe look to change for the Saints game.

If we win that we'll be 4 points off 4th with 9 games to play (2 off WH and 4 off City as I post this) . Manchester derby and West Ham have Chelsea away this weekend also so tough games for opponents.

We've got a sniff there. Hope we can capitalize and give it a real go!

Believable8 Unbelievable1

18 Mar 2016 01:32:58
Both fullbacks struggled today and Studge had a stinker. All in all, great work lads. As for Klopp, everything is BOOM!

18 Mar 2016 01:41:25
i don't think milner struggled at all tonight and produced arguably the best left full back display of the season for us.

Clyne didn't have the best of games but i feel this was more down to the fact that he had no help whatsover from the midfield.

All in all a good performance from the reds looking forward to the draw tomorrow.

18 Mar 2016 03:09:11
Agree. Milner did a great job at fullback, it was Clyne who really struggled (for the first time IMO) but then again he was often faced with 2 or more players looking to overload him out wide. Martial also had a good game to be fair.

Milner has really proved his usefulness as a utility player in recent weeks, able to play wing, attacking mid, midfield and fullback.

18 Mar 2016 05:25:24
Biggest culprit was still Sturridge imo, though Hendo's illness did not help one bit. Firmino and Coutinho had to do most of the pressing in Utd's half, meaning the pressing from our fullbacks and midfield was out of sync. And Clyne bore the brunt of it today. Milner did well playing out of position.

18 Mar 2016 05:44:35
Indian is spot on. Sturridge see himself as the Messi trying to dribble past all the players and being very individual showcasing his skills.
Fowler was a deadly goal scorer and never cared anything else other than scoring.

{Ed001's Note - that is not true, Sturridge is always looking for other options, the problem is a lack of confidence. He dithers and misses the chance to play the pass. It will come back.}

18 Mar 2016 06:19:22
Sturridge did okay but he's free kick deserved a goal . We should have won this game I thought but delighted to go through . Over the two games we were the better team but harder games await us in this competition I feel.

18 Mar 2016 06:28:13
Ed01. The Coutinho pass to Sturridge in the second half inside the 6 yard box should have been a goal. Fowlerd would have had first time shot while Sturridge tried to dribble past Smalling.

{Ed001's Note - again that is lack of confidence, he took too long to get his shot away. Oh and Fowler was not opposed to the odd dribble rather than early shot at times.}

18 Mar 2016 10:20:03
Please guys. If this is sturridge's best form then people would never have been devastated every time he was injured. At best form, Sturridge is electric with the ball and a great decision maker.

18 Mar 2016 10:37:27
I think what people forget with Sturridge is his excellent movement. Yes, he's lacking a little confidence at the moment, but he's still our best striker.

His movement is excellent, he's still very sharp and causes the opposition defence to panic. It then allows Firmino and Coutinho a bit more space to play.

Klopp is using that balance of Sturridge and Origi perfectly at the moment. I wouldn't change it.

17 Mar 2016 23:29:54
I will take Sparta, Villareal or Braga in the next round. Hopefully avoid Seville, Bilbao, Dortmund or Shaktar. Let them knock each other out.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

18 Mar 2016 01:00:48
I think braga would be the best possible draw. Weakest team and not millions of miles away. I reckon we will draw Sevilla though which would be the worst draw after Dortmund of course.

18 Mar 2016 01:36:39
Braga is not a team you wanna mess with. Trust me on this. They are near unbeatable at home and made the EL final in 2011, losing to FC Porto and Falcao (in his prime) stunner. I'd pick Sparta who are the weakest team, IMO.

18 Mar 2016 01:36:41
Anybody but Dortmund or Sevilla! We'll find out in a blink! Great result tonight!
Great win for Hutch and Alexi and all the Reds!

18 Mar 2016 01:42:03
would rather play sevilla than shaktar.

18 Mar 2016 02:53:02
Any of them, don't care.

18 Mar 2016 04:50:30
Would love to meet dortmund in the final.

18 Mar 2016 05:07:45
Dortmund and Sevilla would be the worst draw but anyway if we continue to play like we played against the Mancs we should be afraid of any team.

18 Mar 2016 05:26:26
Salim, i would take a Sevilla. Dortmund and Villareal are the two teams that will definitely beat us. Hopefully they face each other and one gets knocked out.

18 Mar 2016 06:31:28
Indian,
You forget Sevilla won this competition twice in the last three years. They are a very good side.

18 Mar 2016 08:07:01
How do you figure that Villareal will 'definitely beat us'? They are good but not that good, we have a very good chance of overcoming them. I'd like Braga, Shaktar, Sparta or Bilbao.

18 Mar 2016 08:10:43
redohio - I see your point about Braga but just by looking at their league table alone, if they are near unbeatable at home then they must be leakier than a ship away cause they are still 4th place and 11 points off 3rd in a poor league. And 2011 was 5 years ago, hardly an indication of current ability - in the 5 years since then we went from the Hodgson era, to 2nd, to back to mid table!

18 Mar 2016 10:11:23
Indian Buzzer you seem to forget that Sevilla is the only team that has beaten both Real and Barcelona this season and also Villareal last week.

17 Mar 2016 23:24:56
That was a great victory over the 2 legs Lads!
Just want to post and mention the Liverpool away supporters tonight. Absolutely fantastic and I was proud sat infront of the TV hearing you All night 'Over Sing' 70odd thousand Manchester United supporters.
