Well done Reds. Young squad pulled it off, and nice to see Lucas on the score sheet. Young Harry Wilson got a run out too. First win of 2017!

Erm how good did ojo look. Best cameo.

18 Jan 2017 23:21:53
Plus Ojo is only 18 yrs young, and not fully fit, this lad has a huge future ahead of him .

19 Jan 2017 07:08:58
Ojo was really good. I'll take the win, clean sheet, no injuries and another home time. Happy Days!

19 Jan 2017 06:33:20
Ojo looked great, so did Woodburn IMO especially when dropping a little deeper Coutinho style. Gomez, TAA, Lucas, Ejaria all sound. Strikers disappointed a bit, can see Firmino starting up top again.

19 Jan 2017 23:55:02
Ojo is going to be a star, he runs like Digger 😎

18 Jan 2017 21:12:12
Great to see young Wilson coming on best of luck to the lad

Tidy finish from our Brazilian genius.

Well done Lucas and the young team tricky potential banana skin avoided
tonight.

To much side to side passing from us giving them breathing space and let them regroup.

19 Jan 2017 07:11:28
Agreed, Dermot. Good win for the kids BUT too many passes and not enough shots to loosen their defence.

18 Jan 2017 20:14:31
Pure class that, the banner for Daniel May.

{Ed025's Note - yeah bergen...great stuff mate..

19 Jan 2017 02:21:24
I watched the game here in Australia with my 10 yr old boy. He asked who Daniel May was. When I told him, he commented how nice a gesture it was by LFC fans to make the banner. It was a very classy gesture indeed, so thanks and respect to those fans for doing all reds proud.

Hey Ed01,

Hope you are doing great mate. Will quickly get to what I wanted to ask you.

1. Isn't klopp carrying the baggage from utd game for far too long now? Shouldnt we just move on to the next game than disect that in pressers?

2. That stat where opts says Liverpool played more long balls than united this season. I am kinda finding it difficult to place when exactly did that happen. I have seen most of our games this season and I don't seem to agree with that stat. Are clearances hoofed by our defence botching thay stat?

Thanks as always! Good day!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - 1. No, he is just making certain the players pick up their performance in the next match.

2. No idea, OPTA stats are not a useful tool in that kind of context. It is a pointless thing to even look at. It is arbitrary decisions on what is a long ball and what is not. Though you seem to have forgotten slid balls through to a forward that he races onto, cross field passes etc can all be long balls.}

18 Jan 2017 17:09:56
I think you need to check again United have played 510 long balls . Liverpool only played 478.

18 Jan 2017 17:15:05
I just read a sky sports article on long balls that places us 15th and unt 12th, what can we gather from that? It's all bo****ks and you can manipulate stats however you want

18 Jan 2017 17:48:28
ball went back to migs a fair few times and he launched it up the pitch, also counts as a long ball

18 Jan 2017 17:50:09
Opta long balls are anything over 35 yards and into space. not directly played to a team mate based on the details I have read.

18 Jan 2017 18:08:19
Bit of a pointless discussion really if your comparing utds use of the long ball compared to Liverpool

Why?

Utd use it only when Carrick is either not playing or is covering as centre back during play as they have no other sensible option to do with the ball due to lack of talent and creativity in midfield.

Liverpool use it for fast counter attacking, for example firmino is the furthest man up front and central with lallana maybe 15-20 yards back further but in a wide position. As we deal with whatever defensive pressure we are under lallana will pick up the ball out wide taken from a pass of maybe 20-30ish yards run maybe 5 strides the hit a diagonal ball for firmino and then BANG! Ball in the net.
That's the real difference in my opinion.

Don't count them, compare how the long ball is used and it's effectiveness, between the 2 and you will see an ocean of a difference then and only then.

{Ed025's Note - that sounds to me like its ok for liverpool to do it as its tactical, but if utd use it its hoofball, now why doesn,t that surprise me?..

18 Jan 2017 18:46:30
Ed025

It's the truth mate. little partisan and rose-tinted about it. But you already know that now, don't you? Lol

{Ed025's Note - i can hardly deny it suko, some of the posters do make me smile.. deluded or what?.. :)

18 Jan 2017 19:50:54
Ah ed025

Stop being a hater

😂😂

{Ed025's Note - im not a hater savvy..just a realist mate..

18 Jan 2017 20:08:35
Ed did you not see the difference in let's use the utd game for example.

Utd in the second half kicked the ball from maybe around 10 yards outside their box to the edge of our box and hoping either Martial or ibrahahimovic could get a knock down and hope somebody was running onto that.

Compared to our defence working it out to midfield or the wings quickly and 2-3 passes later we have yet another shot on target, there's a real difference between the 2 and I am a realist as well by the way.

Have always called it as I've seen it and just to butter you up a little I was never Henderson biggest fan either since he joined but he does have his moments now and again.

😉😉😉

{Ed025's Note - its just differen means to an end savvy, none of them is wrong or right mate just different ways to create a chance mate..

18 Jan 2017 20:15:08
Agreed but one is a lot more exciting to watch than the other which I think was the original OP point at the top of this thread.

{Ed025's Note - in your opinion i would say savvy, i actually along with many others would prefer it to tikka takka which is incredibly boring..but i suppose it takes all sorts mate..

18 Jan 2017 21:02:44
Theres a difference between puttinf fellani up top and hoofing it up to him and your cb switxhing the ball to your lw like lovren does whichever side he plays a lot of the time.

18 Jan 2017 13:54:27
Anyone know if the American lad Brooks Lennon (currently playing for our under 23s) is close to getting a chance with the 1st team, or is he still a ways away?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

18 Jan 2017 14:38:55
think he is going back to the American League on loan

18 Jan 2017 14:59:05
He's been very good this season for the U23s and he's just gone out on loan to the MLS to get some experience I would imagine. One of the most underrated players for the U23s in my opinion

18 Jan 2017 15:58:43
Are you sure? He played the other day under 23 vs man u.

18 Jan 2017 16:27:28
Going out on loan I should say

18 Jan 2017 12:58:26
Ed 001 if you have time, i remember a few years ago this young irish boy who grew up in Australia, zak gilsenan i was just wandering is he still at liverpool ar has he moved on. i haven't heard a thing aboit him since.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am sorry I don't know.}

18 Jan 2017 13:38:30
I know who you mean. He was in the Barcelona academy and therefore got nick named the Irish Messi! Rumour has it we signed him to the academy.

Haven't heard anything in about 3 years now but he was only 11 back then. So he is probably only 13/ 14 years old and being kept firmly out of the spotlight if he did actually sign for LFC.

18 Jan 2017 14:17:58
Ahhh yeah I remember hearing about the Irish messi

18 Jan 2017 18:33:08
Cheers lads. whatever is happening with him its being kept quite

18 Jan 2017 23:52:27
Mess. ie

Hi Ed002.just a quick question re the whole Matip affair. With the cited problem being that Matip did not "officially" write to Fecafoot to inform them of the retirement whilst he was at Schalke (it seems Schalke did not give him appropriate advice in 2015). do you think that FIFA will move to an investigation on Friday? My personal view is that if they follow the letter of their own law then we'll lose him for the entire AFCON. Such a pity if it happens as it's such a silly mistake and was easily avoidable.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The rules are clear as to where the responsibility resides for all such matters and the expectation remains that FIFA will try to draw a line under the matter on Friday. It is not a silly mistake and the person responsible at Liverpool should have known better.}

18 Jan 2017 14:40:04
Thanks for the reply Ed002. I understand what you're saying but the complaint actually extends to the original point of time when Matip was a Schalke player and not a Liverpool player. It looks like LFC will claim that they reasonably "assumed" Matip had been given the correct guidance by Schalke's employees when he originally retired from international football and was a Schalke player. I'm just saying what I've read to be honest from various press reports. But thanks again for always being on hand and enlightening.

{Ed002's Note - You may wish to go and read the rules about club responsibilities in terms of player eligibility. Any arument of stupidity on behalf of Liverpool will simply be referred back to the rulebooks (FA, UEFA and FIFA all make responsibilities crystal clear).}

18 Jan 2017 16:33:20
It's lack of due diligence on the clubs behalf.
Matip said pre season that he would probably be going to the African cup of nations.

This should have set alarm bells ringing at Anfield as an officially retired international player wouldn't have even mentioned going.

When players sign for a new club, lawyers, agents, doctors, managers, accountants, prem league. Etc. All get involved lookingafter the player and the clubs interests
How this was missed by so many people is amazing given Matips own statement on the ACN.

{Ed002's Note - One person is responsible at all clubs - and one person only.}

18 Jan 2017 17:49:35
every season from when I first starting supporting Liverpool, and that is from birth, we have always messed something up, we always have on our books, someone who is not tuned in, this has held us back big time, I hope Klopp shows whoever messed up this time, the back door, if we ever want to win the premiership, we can't have wasters on our staff/ books .

18 Jan 2017 17:52:48
ED02 taking nothing away from the fact someone at the club responsible hasn't clearly done what they are paid to do. If Cameroon didn't even select him for the AFCN in their final 23 squad. Why do they dig their heels in so to speak?

Thanks in advance for the response.

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what you mean by "dig in their heels". And it is nothing to do with their "final 23". They had in December made it clear that they would like to have selected him - and that alon should have been ringing alarm bells at Liverpool even if they had already screwed up. There continues to be an obsession with trying to blame someone else.}

Not at all ED02. I read a fifa advice experts (apparently) outlook on the whole situation.

He said that no written statement was done by the Secretary of L'Pool and so the Cameroon FA said they know nothing of Matip confirmation of retirement from International football.

That said he hasn't been selected for a while for his country. advised them he was retired whilst at Schalka and so he could not understand that although they selected Matip for the 33. He was injured at the time. Cameroon then went onto not select him for the 23. His outlook was an error on Liverpool's behalf. but cannot see why Fifa have not just stepped in and ended it.

{Ed002's Note - I have explained what has happened and I have explained where responsibility rests. He has never advised them that he was retired. Your last message was looking to blame his country for digging their heels in and now you want to know why FIFA do not "step in" to resolve matters such as this. The question has been asked of FIFA and they have said that they will discuss it on Friday to see if it needs to be looked at further - they have done what is appropriate. I am not going to explain again where responsibility falls as it is oerfectly clear.}

18 Jan 2017 21:03:59
Thanks ED02 for the reply even though I have annoyed you slightly. Appreciate the effort you put into this site.

I think a P45 maybe on the horizon for the Liverpool secretary.

i have seen a lot of debate about how fans should be feeeling at the moment in regards to our position in the table. and our recent form.

i myself am a glass half full type of fan. i think we have a fantastic team, our front three are fantastic and any team would stuggle to handle them. we have one of the more talented midfields in the league, Henderson is proving his worth to everyone in this deeper role, Lallana has stepped up, i for one thought mane would take his place in the side. how wrong was i! we have got one of the bargains of the season in Matip.

yes our form lately hasn't been the best however, our league position hasn't suffered so much as this has coincided with cup games. which i think we can turn around.

we have played all the big boys away from home (except city but they have hardly been formidable) which means all our title/ top 4 rivals have to come to Anfield. we haven't lost at home in over a year!

then we have IMO one of the best managers in the league, and some reallt talented younger players. how many people would have chewed your arm off for top 4 considering not many were impresssed by our transfer business.

Coutinho is back, and we can get back to winning ways tonight and Sunday!

come on lads its not all woeful.

Nice one lads.
On our day we are capable of giving anyone a thumping.
Form has dipped recently along with confidence and that has been magnified by Chelsea's incredible run.
There are 17 games left, I see no reason why we can't win all of them if we suddenly rediscover our confidence.

Spot on, LFCSTE29. We should always look at the big picture and the great progress we have made under Klopp. Have there been blips? Of course. That is bound to happen cos no one is perfect and no one has ever won all their games in one season.

Remember we have only lost three times in all competitions and lost 2 games in the PL, period. That alone should be a sign of hope and positivity that we are getting there despite our issues. We are still in a good position despite our troubles and once our big boys are back in the team (Mane, Couts and Matip), we will be able to unleash hell on the PL again, like we did in the first 3/ 4 months of the season.

We just have to not dwell on the negative things (of which are rare, IMO) too much, stop with the overreactions after every result (even a win), stay grounded and focus on the positives, stick together and get through this patch, with knowledge that there is already light at the end of the tunnel. Keep the faith, my fellow reds!

18 Jan 2017 10:09:20
To all the reds heading to Plymouth today, have a great evening, and cheer our team (hopefully) to victory. I lived in Plymouth for four years, really fond of the place, so gutted I'm not going tonight

Cheers'en
