Just because we have started talks with suarez's agent doesn't mean he will sign a new deal in the next few weeks. These talks take a good few months and I'm sure what is being said is that if we do qualify for CL then would he want to stay and sign a new 5 year deal on £150 -£200,000 a week deal.

If suarez is after a payday then give the lad a payday, if bale was irreplaceable to spurs then we will be in big trouble if suarez does go. The figures being quoted though 120k are a joke, do they really believe he will stay for that in the modern game. Having said that, if he isn't already on 120k then then no wonder he wants to go. I understand that without CL its hard to fund the wages but they need to look at the bigger picture. LIVERPOOL FC have the 3rd best player in the world, we should do everything we can to keep him.

FSG have a big job on there hands to keep him this summer. There isn't a player on the planet that we could buy to replace him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I know it probably isn't this easy, but don't buy anymore of these £5 million type players, and if necessary off-load one or two, to find the funds to pay Suarez top dollar.

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolutely agree, we would not be second in the league without him. Simple.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thought it was 200k which would make him up there with top earners in BPL
Gerrard's on 120k atm I believe so you may have been confused by him eclipsing Liverpool's top earner of 120k?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it goes deeper than just wot we pay him, we r in the best positin as a club right now than we have been in a long long time i'm not saying we have to spend money ridiculously but think fsg must realise that we have a platform here to build from, a couple of top signings in jan to prove we want to move on again and put luis on £180,000 a week and who knows wot could happen, I've always backed fsg and believe they will c this too and I think huge shout has to go out to br short space of time wot a job he done

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't get it. He is playing unbelievable football but to say he is irreplaceable is ridiculous. We played our first 5 or six games without him, we finished last season strongly without him. Most of us were happy to see him go after the bite, or after throwing himself at any club that would take him. When Arsenal sold RVP they have become stronger for it, when we sold Torres it was a similar story so just because it hasn't yet worked for Spurs doesn't mean it will FSG us up as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

You cannot compare RVP and Torres with suarez. RVP and Torres both finish of chances created by the team. So if they go the team still create chances.

Suarez scores goals he creates by himself and creates chances for others.

Yes we control possession ect and keep the ball but I really believe Suarez is making us look better than we actually are. We wouldn't score many without him. The team are controlling the play and suarez is doing the damage.

last season, first game of his bitey-ban, against Newcastle? How many did we score that day?

Agree0 Disagree0

Newcastle were very poor, what's your point? Its one game!

Agree0 Disagree0

And what about the other 9 games we played where I think we remained unbeaten without him? ( I know we won 7 and had 2 draws, not sure about the remaining one though). My world came crashing down the morning I woke up and saw Torres holding that blue mercenary shirt. But remind me who filled those massive boots he left? Oh yeah, that man Suarez everyone is on about these days.

Moral of the story, Liverpool will always have world class players no matter if we end up selling one (for quite a significant profit) to bring another one in.

Quote from Michael Owen when writing an article about different clubs title hopes. When talking about Liverpool he said 'The noises I am hearing are that Rodgers has money to spend this coming window.' How much information does Owem really know about the club still or is he just talking out of is ****?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm sure he still talks to the likes of gerrard carragher, fowler, mcmanaman. But how much do they really know? It's a just rumours. Bruce groberlaar said a couple months back he's been told a top world class signing will be made in January and I quote " but I'm not giving anything away". Who knows how much these ex players no. I don't think there in the no.

Agree0 Disagree0

Owen is close to Carragher and does know several people within the club still and I suppose he may still talk to Stevie also. I think he may be exaggerating his club knowledge though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Here's the thing. Rodgers has spent money in.every transfer window so would it be surprising if he spent in January? Owen might well be stating the obvious.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Dec 2013 21:02:39
FSG will always be happy to fund transfers if the transfer committee approves and can convince them that the player in question will help the club achieve its ambition.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Dec 2013 16:05:57
Hey ED 002, could you explain how modern football club owners can expect to make a profit while also trying to challenge for trophies? Transfer fee are mind boggling, wages even more so. Plus they have to spend every transfer window, it seems like football clubs are just an endless pit of money. Liverpool for example have just been spending money relentlessly for the last few years while winning, well almost nothing. Even with the long pre season tours and everything, isn't this just a loss making business venture for most, if not all of the owners?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Manchester United and Arsenal constrain their spending. Success has helped sustain both through income from the Champions League and sponsorship. Chlsea peaked financially with the CL win but has had sustained success in Europe and a very good turnover. Manchester City and Liverpool have much lower turnover and are the only two English sides to have failed the FFP tests for all three years of data capture. Spurs have managed their finances through sales as have others. Getting back in to the CL and sustaining it fo a few years will put Liverpool in a much better position - although it will be tough as the club will likely be in the mid 30s or so ranking wise so will face a tough draw when they do return.}

I like how you say when, and not if. Ed ;)

Hi guys, first time poster and just wanted to say a big thankyou to all the eds and posters on here who make this site so addictive. I look for updates at least 10 times a day and sometimes in the middle of the night. I know I need to get out more! Anyway did anyone notice Brenda has included Rossiter and Smith in the squad for Chelsea? I was profoundly underwhelmed when Rogers got the job because I didn't think he had the credentials to take us back to the halcyon days but I put my hand up and say I was wrong. He can pick a player no doubt but I thought he was tactically inept, no plan B but week by week he's proving me wrong. I hope i'm eating humble pie for a very long time! I have my fingers crossed for Salah and if he comes along with Alex Song and the greek guy I will be made up and then we can start to dream! By the way what happened to the Egyption poster on here who used to rave about Salah and in my opinion was quite articulate and knowledgable but he used to get derided on here? Whoever and wherever you are buddy I hope your well and isn't the taste of vindication a tasty one?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

18 Dec 2013 15:46:45
I'm right here. Thanks mate.
But the season is still long and I hope we continue to improve until the last kick of the season, when the vindication will be deserved if we finish in the top 4;)

By the way guys, watch Liverpool U18 vs Blackpool in the fa youth cup tonight:) Maybe Rossiter will get a start.

Ryan Kent signed his first professional contract with Liverpool (awsome little player) also!

There are at least 5 clubs who are ready to bid for Salah so I would be delighted if he comes but I don't want to keep my hopes up because Dortmund, Inter and Wolsfburg are really trying to sign him. Salah himself said in an interview a week ago that he would love to come to Liverpool but Liverpool won't budge over £ 12 million and Basel want more, closer to £ 15 plus 25% of any further sale which is very "greedy" we'll see.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey Malak, good to hear from you again. don't stop posting buddy because I for one appreciate your input. You seem informed and passionate about our great club. Let the haters hate and let the real fans support. Do you think Salah would be a perfect fit for us and do you think he'll be wearing the Liverbird on his chest come January? 25% sell on fee is ridiculous!

Lol, I love you boys, truly I do.

Can I just say, i'm 47 and been a gooner all my life. Have had the pleasure of visiting Anfield 5 times with Arsenal. I have been to every ground in the league but I loved my trips to Liverpool.
my best mates a scouser and we use to go together and you scousers are the warmest, friendliest supporters I have ever encountered.
I remember turning up in a pub near Anfield with my Arsenal shirt on, walked through the doors about 3 hours before kick-off, the pub fell silent, 100 odd scousers looking at me in my Arsenal shirt and I thought "Oh sh*t".

But I swear, every one of them treated me like a brother, kept buying me drinks and gave me the warmest welcome you could imagine. (like I said though, my mate I was with was a scouser so that helped lol)

Top boys you lot.

Agree0 Disagree0

5 Gold Stars, you are correct my friend.
I just love class players mate and Suarez is truly the best.
The fact we were linked with him during summer made me wish he was a gooner, although we knew all along it was never going to happen.

The Juicer, geez, that is just the worst cockney I have ever heard mate, hehe bless you for trying though lol.

It will be interesting to see if the rumours of Suarez being offered a new contract are true.

Personally, I suspect it is, but what about the consequences of the timing of the contract?

Yes, the club need to tie him down now if possible, but what if the player refuses to sign? What if the new offer instigates a move by the big clubs in January?

Let's see the reaction then!

Either way, I still think he will go, and good luck to the lad if he does, but there will be some questioning (if he signs) whether or not the new signing is a test of loyalty or another player playing for the money alone, as we all know the lure of Madrid is too tempting for anyone to refuse.

Anyway, less of the pessimism and let's enjoy his football whilst still in a red shirt.

Sensible debate this morning please guy's.
While I don't doubt Suarez is worth the £200 000 a week we are reported to be offering, does anyone else wonder if this could turn out to be a poisoned chalice?
If we make CL football (and all indications are that is a possibility) we will have to strengthen the team and do so BIG style to cope with the extra demands the competition will bring.
If players that are looking to join see another player on £200 000 a week they are going to try to push for a similar kind of contract. Will the club be able to afford this? Will we be able to buy the quality that will be needed to have a sustained CL push AND pay such large wages?
I am not going on a downer. I trust in BR and what the owners are doing. I think we need players of Suarez/Gerrard stature to draw other good players to the club. I just worry that the club can sustain wages on this scale and don't want to see in a few years time us struggling to maintain this kind of structure.
Don't forget it took BR ages to shift moderate players on very high wages when he first arrived. (I am not suggesting Suarez is moderate LOL) and don't want to see us have to do that again in the near future.
I want to see BR bringing players here like he is doing now, who want to play for LFC and not for the amount of 0000's going into there bank accounts.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

WE should only buy quality players who want to play for us. There is no way FSG would bow down to the demands of an incoming player, especially when he is yet to perform for the club on the pitch. The whole world knows Suarez is one of the top 5 players on the planet, hence why FSG are sanctioning such huge wages. I very much doubt it would create any issue while negotiating salary packages with incoming players. Also FSG believe in the performance based contracts, so any new player will have to play at Suarez's level to merit such huge wages.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well, I am sure the club will not give 200k to a guy without good reason. I still think, if we get CL football, we will continue to buy players on the current wage structure. They will nees to play damn well to earn an increase.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't believe so, no. Never a poisoned chalice to reward productivity in my opinion, no one at the club is on the same level that Suarez is, or in the League for that matter, no disrespect to any of them and I think they'd all understand and agree the lad is in his own bubble right now.

No one coming into Liverpool will warrant going straight on that kind of wage, not unless they are very, very highly thought of and even then i'd imagine they would have to perform exceptionally well and show the same sort of brilliance that Suarez has done, before a mega contract would be offered to them. The best players should be paid competitively.

To put into context how good Luis has been since coming back to the team in September, Suarez is leading European football goals to games ratio, bare with me and the statistics but just to revel and marvel in our #7's unprecedented 17 Prem league goals in 11 games, giving him a 1.55 goals per a game ratio that is only challenged in another major league (England, Germany, Italy and Spain) by Ronaldo who has scored at a ratio of 1.13 goals per a game, that's the difference right now, there isn't a player in better form playing in a major league who can match Suarez for productivity right now the nearest is Ronaldo and he's 0.42 goals per a game off of Suarez ratio!

After Ronaldo it's Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid with a ratio of 1.06 goals per a game. That's 0.49 (virtually half a goal) per a game less than Suarez and that's compared to third place! Sergio Aguero has a 0.87 goals per a game ratio which is the closest player to rival him from the Premiership, which is 0.68 goals per a game less than Suarez has managed to score.

Sturridge has a 0.75 goals to game ratio, which Suarez has almost made the difference between himself and the next best in England, Aguero, again 0.68 in ratio difference, that's nearly a whole Daniel Sturridge as the difference. Unreal and looking at Cardiff's away record of conceding 15 goals on the road this season, I wouldn't put it beyond Suarez to keep his foot off the goal gas.

Suarez outscored Messi in 2010 by 1 goal but was not given the golden shoe because goals scored by players in the Dutch league are not awarded the same value (points) that goals in England, Italy, Germany and Spain are, which is why i've labelled England, Germany, Italy and Spain as the ''major leagues''.

Agree0 Disagree0

While no one can doubt Suarez is a fantastic player and in this ridiculous financial age in football he probably is worth a crazy weekly wage, but I don't know if its a good idea for a business already running at a very significant loss to give an employee a very generous pay rise. Then again i'm home on a week day at 11:30 so what do I know about business.

Agree0 Disagree0

If players that are looking to join see another player on £200 000 a week they are going to try to push for a similar kind of contract

==========================

This is not necessarily true, Messi and Ronaldo are on a higher salary than the rest of their Galactico team mates.
As the Indian Buzzer said, Suarez is one of the top 5 if not top 3 players in the world, having him in the team will encourage incoming players to join to play along side him

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Messi and Ronaldo are not good examples to use as the finances of sponsorship of their clubs is completely different to that of LFC.}

Liverpool do contracts with bounses remember suarez scored 20 goals got a extra 20 grand sterling is on some kind of contracr were preformance mean more money and I read so is sturridge suarez proved his worth that is why he is getting more

Agree0 Disagree0

I think I may have not made what I was saying clear in my post above.
What I am concerned about is players coming In seeing us pay a player £200 000 a week and thinking they can get a contract for more than they are worth. The likes of Joe Cole (admitted came on a free transfer) who was on (if memory serve's me right) £100 000 a week. It then took BR and FSG an age to get the likes of these "STARS" of our books.
I don't want in a couple of seasons time to be in the same position. Mediocre players here on exorbitant wages and us unable to shift them because no one else is willing to match there salary.
I agree with what people above have said about Suarez. He is an exceptional player. One of the best in the world who should be rewarded for his performances. I just don't want to see other players coming here because they are going to get high wages and not be bothered to play for the club which has happened with past players.
vrcomp
Y.N.W.A.

Agree0 Disagree0

If there is anything the owners do know about it is how to run a business and how to make money. Bear in mind, they have already sanctioned a few seemingly wreckless transfers (Downing, Carroll, Adam etc). I am comfortable that FSG will not make mistakes when awarding pay rises.
I am also confident that Suarez deserves to get a top wage. He undoubtedly raises the achievements of the team and he raises the profile of the club. Suarez is a true world class player, his next 3 years will be his peak. If we sign him up it will be worth while.

Agree0 Disagree0

Having Suarez on the pitch is literally like having 12 players. He does the job of 2 players with amount of running, pulling defenders out of position, assists and goals. As far as I'm concerned, it's not unfair that he gets paid 2 players wages! The only other player that I can think of that does the work of 2 is Yaya Toure - I would also say that he deserves 2 players wages - the both of them are simply THAT good. I can't think of any other player that makes a team feel like they have an extra man on the pitch, so as far as I'm concerned - pay him the money, he deserves it! If a new player comes in, he can watch Luis and see how good he has to be to get that sort of wage, if they are as good as him, all the better for us!

Agree0 Disagree0

Vrcomp I know what you mean but I do not think that this will start that trend. FSG have actually taken a lot of flack on this page for being careful with wages and fees, they are also looking to offload players who'se contribution doesn't match their salary-hence why downing, kuyt, cole et all were sold. So I don't think money will ever be the main factor in a player joining Liverpool again.

I'm a LFC fan and I work with a spurs fan .he started with Liverpool were average and spurs were really poor, my reply a bit disrespectful to LFC .then went on to say spurs are one of the biggest clubs in England (top 4)after chocking I ask why top 4 team in country, I would put them top 8 at best on history and current form .but he said I didn't have a clue what I was talking about .i asked for the evidence why there a top team he said 8 fa cup 2 leagues and massive fan base. Have I missed something .please let me know if I'm to far of the mark .

I've never seen such positivity on this site. Quite incredible!

Anyway, am I the only one that thinks Cardiff will be a tricky game? They are decent defensively and are a very real threat from set pieces. Whittingham's delivery is top drawer and defending set pieces has been our Achilles heel. I expect us to win, but don't think it will be easy. Plus I've seen a fair few false dawns from us over the past few years.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If I remember correctly, Cardiff at home was Bill Shanklys first ever game as manager and the last time they visited Anfield. We lost 4-0.

Agree0 Disagree0

We beat them 2-1 at Anfield in October 2007 in the League Cup (that was their last visit)

I agree it's a much trickier proposition this time around and will be a better indicator of where we're at from a football perspective as a whole

Agree0 Disagree0

Cardiff to have something about them and we nees to concentrate on this game and not the next two difficult away fixtures. Aftrr all, a win against Spurs and Cardiff are worth the sameamount of points.

Agree0 Disagree0

I saw Cardiff stuff Liverpool on University Challenge the other night - hope it's not an omen!

I also saw bad tea leaves in the bottom of my cup, and a seagull flying backwards!

Good grief, the more that our good form continues, the more that we all look at patterns from the past to see the next big pitfall.

Just enjoy the good performances and let Cardiff worry about how they are going to stop us.
