Thought the team today was fantastic. The squad at last is looking real strong and great competition for places. i'd settle for 4th and a cup

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You'd "settle" for that? That's like saying Manchester United would "settle" for the PL.

4th and a cup would be hitting the jackpot this season

Ally cissokho will be announced on Monday! Good news all round, cover/competition for Enrique! Just what he needed, Thanks a lot

My views on the match:
- atmosphere was great at stadium
- coutinho, aspas, Sturridge inter-play was brilliant
-hendo played well, but should have had a goal
-Toure added danger from set pieces, brought the balll forward, composed on the ball
-full backs played ok
-great football at time probably should have got more but some new additions and it an easy time to score against
-Sturridge played well but looks a bit short of match sharpness
- still get nervous when defending set pieces,
-Simon bit sketchy at first but made some good saves plus did brilliant on saving penalty
- team looked like there was a good vibe between players

Also hats off to stoke fans for chanting; "we're passing the ball, were passing the ball. We're stoke city, were passing the ball!" Made me laugh

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said Roland-dinho, could not agree with you more on your analysis of the game today. Apart from the 3 points I was made up with the atmosphere for most of the game today, let's all keep it up.

Good evening Ed's and fellow Reds

Good news we have started the season with a win and 0 goals conceded. Its a good start that will help us build confidence. We look a better equiped team than last season which will stand us in good stead .
If we can add a proven winger and a CB to the team prior to window closing I feel we could be in with a really good shot at top 4

Willan?
Alberweld?

RedforLife

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think a CB being purchased is going to be contingent on our outgoing players ie. Coates, Skrtel. If they stay, I just don't see us adding to the 6 players we'd have available for that position.

Mathieu Flamini as cover for Lucas (who ran the game today) anyone, i'm sure he's on a free and if our medical team can work yet more of their magic he'd be a great addition to the squad.

Oh and by the way get in there the reds! Mignolet you beauty.

Right now it sounds like Willian is the flavour of the month and every man and his dog wants more than anything for this lad to sign.

But, am I the only one who thinks he won't address our problems? We need goals and attacking threat from the wing, does Willian offer that? An excellent dribbler no doubt, but goals?

Today showed us fans what we have known all summer and still haven't fully addressed yet: we don't take enough of our chances.

Anyway, great game today thoroughly enjoyed it and fingers crossed our squad is as good as it can be come the 2nd September.

Puzzled Red

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I couldn't offer my thoughts on Willian, don't know enough about the player.

I agree we need an attacking player comfortable on the left or right side who can score goals as well as beign a creative force).

Also not sure spending £30m on a player will be in our best interests; saying that there seems a lack of talent available in this window (from an overall pespective).

I'm happy we have got (well appears to have got) someone to challenge Enrique; good player and strong, hard to beat but his distributon and crossing/shooting is not the best.

I still think there may be a few changes before the transfer window (Coates and Skrtel could go).

I thought we was very good in the 1st half - 2nd took the foot off the pedal a bit - and not knockign Joe Allen but henderson looks a better option to me atm.

Hoola

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Rodgers is going for someone who can break down the defense's that park the bus outside the 18. Willian has a bag of tricks with pace to burn, the link up today was already fantastic and throw in Suarez(if he stays) and our attacking force will be intimidating. Imo, we have enough goals in the group, just need more creator/flair type players to bring them out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Again, Like a broken record I'm going to repeat it, Don't be worried about his goals lol.

Suarez wasn't prolific for us at first & despite being prolific at Ajax, you really have to take anyones goal scoring capabilities in the dutch league with a pinch of salt.

I refer to Dirk Kuyt & Majeta Kezman.

Rodgers is the right man to develop attacking players.

Agree0 Disagree0

An unpredictable dribbler of WIllians type, sucks in defenders, pulls them out of position, creating space, I think this is what BR has partly in mind, create a little space and uncertainty in and around the box, making the quick interplay easier and more effective especially with the technical quality we have. So all though Willian is not a prolific scorer (I'm sure that will be worked on) this type of players contribution falls outside the standard stats of goals scored/ assists, he creates goals in other ways so don't concern yourselves with the stats, look at how many players he draws in when his on the ball. that if we even buy him!

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 20:58:13
Had to laugh at the sign before the game at the emerites. YOU CAN'T BUY CLASS. A.F.C. Ha ha then boo your team off at half time. Priceless.

Thrilled with the first game. Those are games we would have drawn or lost last year. Mignolet looked great, he's a beast of a keeper. However I think we were spoilt with just how good pepe is with his feet, mignolet def needs work on his ball skills and passing out the back. All in all brilliant performance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I disagree about his passing. He played two excellent passes to Enrique and Johnson (Johnson got pressured quickly, but it found him first), Fantastic debut after a dodgy spell at the very start.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Aug 2013 05:00:38
Agree with Michael, After an early scare, his passing became:a lot crisper and more accurate, especially to the full-backs

Agree0 Disagree0

Slim has a fair point lads. Mignolet got blocked down once, that pass to Enrique was nuts it was over a Stoke player who was quite close to him - you don't want your keeper trying Xabi Alonso passes, and that one to Johnson was on his head with a man running towards him - these aren't good passes from a decision perspective he shouldn't be playing them.

If he can't play short passes to feet or passes to players in space where they have time to control the ball then he should go long. Otherwise we're going to lose possession close to our own box.

Wow just been on arsenal page, they really unhappy with AW even calling for him to go, yes I know it not first time but he got them on a really good run last year at the end got them top 4, it's bad for them all this but got to be good for us, as I said early millions today started the day with hope and smiles and now the smiling to crying for some!!! Under pressure to spend might have to panic buy
Ynwa

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He`s been clueless for years but keeps getting fourth to the point that their fans don`t even want a trophy.

Wow i'd show a little more respect after one game. Too many of our fans get way ahead of themselves.

Mate Wenger is a fantastic manager. The Arsenal fans booing him are just plastics.

17 Aug 2013 20:11:40
Encouraging performance but at the end of the day, stoke are mid table at best, credit to begovic but we need to convert the multiple chances we had, and against better teams we won't get as many chances. thank god mignolet saved that! For the first time in a while I was confident our goalie would save the penalty and he did, went mental when it happened! We need a striker, if willian and cissokho come in we could have a good season. Nice to see Brendan looking for competition for Enrique. Lucas, toure, aspas and coutinho stand out performers for me just need one more clinical finish and we could push for top 4! YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd take a 1-0 win every time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mate when was the last time we beat Stoke in the league?

Just a thought but why didn't we make any Subs other than Aspas for Sterling?

Personally would have taken Sturridge off for Borini.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That's why BR is not the manager and not you - correct decisions made - 1-0 victory - job done!

Agree0 Disagree0

Think BR was trying to keep as many tall players on the pitch as poss to defend set plays from Stoke

Agree0 Disagree0

We were winning a nervy match 1-0, I was a bit worried about Aspas going off, so would have been worse if Sturridge got replaced, no matter who came on in his place!
We won, leave it at that, you don't have to make 3 subs every match don't forget!

Agree0 Disagree0

Height, reluctance to change something that is working, if borini comes on and they score, what does taht do for his confidence? I wanted Borini on for DS at the end as well, but I believe Rodgers was right to not change it up anymore. Sterling coming on was nearly a disaster.

Speaking of which, anyone know what has happened to the development of Raheem? His progress seems to have stalled, any idea what the staff think happened, or am I expecting too much out of the young lad?

Agree0 Disagree0

You saw how long of him? Hard to tell if his development has stalled from that long.
Also, personally I didn't buy into his hype last season, his main skill in youth football was his pace but against men he simply isn't quick enough to make up for his lack of strength, height and talent. He may still come good but he will never be in the same league as the likes of John Barnes who I keep hearing him compared to.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with the original post. I was worried with Sturridge tiring he could get injured again and Borini would have been fresh legs to at least put loads of pressure on the Stoke defence. Hindsight is a wonderful thing lads and yes we won and Sturridge didn't get injured but you don't have the benefit of hindsight when you're making decisions.

Thought everyone of our lads played really well and deserved the win.
Think this victory will do us better than a 3-0 which without Bergovic it would have been. Think the last 10-15 minutes will remind a few how last seasons games against this level went. So well done all especially Mignolet

And Toure, Carra replacement? better then Carra especially attacking corners. What a signing. if only he had a brother

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Saw the match up in the tunnel and thought wow no chance at set pieces. Toure has been the best cb all preseason and a threat at our set pieces

Agree0 Disagree0

Better than Carra?

hi everyone
just wanted to say how good hendo and toure were today {Ed030's Note - Signing Toure has been a great bit of business,Henderson is improving week in week out and runs his socks off too. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have to agree hendo has come on leaps and bounds. Got to say though I really like the look of aspas very skillful and the work rate is quality a little like a skillful kuyt if you like :) it nice to see bith centre backs very comftable on the ball aswell.

Agree0 Disagree0

I`ll take Henderson`s heart and work ethic over a "marquee" singing who`s lazy, inefficient and moans all the time when things don`t go his way.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 19:39:47
The are top of the league after dismantling Swansea. Van Persie had no near death experiences but did manage a brace and amazingly Welbeck scored not once but twice. {Ed030's Note - I think Utd will come unstuck this season especially if RVP gets injured there's nothing down for them and there midfield is not very good at all. }

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Swansea dismantled themselves. They were very poor on the day and gifted United a few.

Agree0 Disagree0

Time will tell but I hope they come unstuck.

My mate just told me we are bidding for Micha Richards, any truth Ed`s? {Ed030's Note - I doubt it mate. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree ed, watching the Liverpool and united games I was so annoyed. we created loads of chances. 10 very good ones and we scored only 1 goal, then united score 4 goal for something like 2 chances! How do they do it. AHH!

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 18:10:47
Hi Eds, with the cissokho signing all but a formality, do you expect the possible addition of willian to mark the conclusion of Liverpools transfer activity? Love the site, cheers {Ed030's Note - I think and hope there will be at least 2 more signings. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed030 do you think we will sign Willian? {Ed030's Note - Erm,I don't know,It just seems to good to be true to me,I really hope so though. }

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed30, I completely understand your 2 signings is purely your own opinion, but does that include or exclude cissoko? If there's any truth in him signing that is. {Ed030's Note - No. }

good win today very impressed with aspas, coutinho ran the show
over the course of the season if we upgrade Johnson Enrique and lucas we'll have a strong team, those 3 players are very poor, excellent attacking play add willian and we'll be excellent

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You have never in your life seen a match have you
lucas poor?
enrique poor?
johnson poor?
dear good lord {Ed030's Note - Johnson is awful at best,He's half decent going forward but not the best defensively,Enrique is better but gets caught out of position alot,Lucas is a very good player. }

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas is very poor? Did you watch the game today?

Agree0 Disagree0

Very poor? Very ducking poor? Lucas is immense one of the best players in his position in the world! Intercepts tackles gets are attacks going and Enrique played well today to! You my friend have the footballing knowledge of a wet decaying cabbage!
Stay classy San Diego

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas, poor? You want to try watching what he actually does for the team.He broke up play again and again, kept the ball moving, always available. He's getting back to the player he was before the Career threatening injury he had.If you don't like him fine, your entitled to your opinion, but honestly, take him out of the team and watch us miss him.

17 Aug 2013 19:45:59
You need your eyes examined.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas is poor?
Are u high or wat?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas is quality one of the best players today

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair a blind man could see lucas was gr8 tday . I just worry about teams sharper in d middle. but if we get willian and when suarez comes back teams will need to worry about us . lucas is solid

Agree0 Disagree0

Really? We would not have won today without Lucas! That's cute, best midfielder on the pitch today

Agree0 Disagree0

Majestic, I thought it might mean your age, or person but guess you need to change your viewing angle for future games .

Agree0 Disagree0

I ain't the biggest Lucas fan but especially 1st half today he was awesome.

The biggest problem I feel for home games we need need someone who can drive the team forward box to box, Gerrard & Lucas are filling the same position, a bit more creativity please to go with Phillipe. We're not too far way.

Agree0 Disagree0

Prob didn`t watch the bleeding game. Mug!

Agree0 Disagree0

What must Lucas do? He was massive today. The best is when the scuffle broke out near the end of the match, the stoke player went after Couhtino, Lucas stepped in and was ready to beat that guy down. Class.

Toure fantastic as well.

17 Aug 2013 19:08:12
I actually thought that Glen johnson had a really good game today, lots of threat and penetration. Although I'm not quite sure which position he was playing in - about five different ones I think. Having Toure in the defence is very comforting, he really does read the game well and deals calmly. Agger was a bit iffy but is taking a bit too much stick from people. He'll play better than that. Enrique was his usual self - occasionally world class, occasionally clumsy and ineffective. The midfield were all excellent, although Sterling frustrates - when he comes on late against a tiring defence I want to see him knock the ball past the defender and do him for pace, but he's always hesitant. Stoke are a tough nut to crack but we cut them open several times and perhaps should have stuck a couple more away. The best thing for me was that there was a very deliberate and effective style of play on show, the one you could see starting to appear in the second half of last season. Anyone could see how far the system has come from the start of last season. Very encouraging.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Square Red

I concur with your comments regarding Sterling, however I honestly believe that the young lad is caught in two minds.

Does he play his individual style, a style that initially got him into the first team squad, but leaves him open to criticism because he takes players on but will at times give the ball away and look greedy, and possibly goes against Rodgers' instructions, leaving him open to being dropped, or does he play a more cautious, reserved, passing game, which is probably keeping with Rodgers' wishes and keeps him in the squad?

I personally would let the young lad have his head and run! however I'm neither the manager nor the player.

As for today, at certain times in the second half I thought our midfield looked a little open, that said, I do think Henderson is slowly coming to grips with the role Rodgers wants him to play, and also the fact that he is playing for Liverpool (big club, etc), that said I would still love the club to go out and buy a young, mobile, bullish type of midfielder that can be groomed to take over from Stevie - as it stands now I don't see one coming through the youth ranks (mind you - it's a pretty high level to achieve)

Ed's, I'm not as versed as I used to be with players both within England or around Europe, is there any one player that you feel may fit the bill? {Ed030's Note -There are lots of good young players out there such as Lanzini,Parades and Bruma to name a few,A little older players who I think could do well are Pjanic,Douglas Costa,Inigo Martinez and Moritz Leitner who are also very good players with bags of potential. }

Liverpool - 26 shots, 53% posession, 1 goal
Manchester United - 10 shots, 35% posession. 3 goals

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Rvp is sheer class. As a striker he only needs a sniff at goal and the ball is in the back of the net. We just need to be more ruthless in front of goal, the opportunities are being created.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well those stats will be put into work in 15 days.

Agree0 Disagree0

4.1 away to Swansea is a fantastic result given the injuries and lack of transfer activity. If we can add 2-3 top players in the next two weeks number 21 isn't too far away, with or without Rooney.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well done
This shows the problem we have to work on.
We dominate but do not get the goals that our dominance deserves

Agree0 Disagree0

And so?

Agree0 Disagree0

Watching United play is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Also, Swansea were awful today, not sure what that was about.

Agree0 Disagree0

How many points for the goals did they get! OH only 3 points. SO just like us. A WIN IS A WIN

Agree0 Disagree0

You missed that regardless both get 3 points!

Agree0 Disagree0

I, ll correct you with united, s match facts attempts 14 not 10 and possession was 49% not 35% as you stated! Don't know Liverpool, s but ye probs wrong about that too also don't get your pointless post so what if we didn't score more alls that matters is we got 3pts level with united

Agree0 Disagree0

Wrong comparison. Manchester United are an experienced team. We are a work in progress. We will need to improve that tho.

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool played a very physical and defensive, counter-attacking stoke team.

United played an open game with a very attack-orientated, less defensively-rigid Swansea team.

The results cannot be compared.

Agree0 Disagree0

Death by football.
Robin Van Persie.

Agree0 Disagree0

Stoke isn't Swansea

Agree0 Disagree0

Swansea play expansive football which allows a good team to also have chances. We played a rugby team who cannot for the life of me, complete 5 passes. {Ed030's Note - Are you serious?,Considering Gerrard had 90% pass accuracy your point is invalid. }

I made a note at the end of last season that we had too many draws against teams like Stoke. This afternoon's win will hopefully go to addressing some of shortcomings from last year. BTW absolutely love how the team hugged Mignolet after his fantastic double save; as good as scoring a second goal!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So true. You could see the unity of the team coming together. Even at this early stage of the season, the lads are hungry for points. They showed passion, now we need continuity."And every game we love to win and this is what we sing"

Agree0 Disagree0

That`s what preseason is for. Bonding and unity.

17 Aug 2013 18:39:46
Let's extrapolate that performance and roll forward to end of season. By then we will have maximum points, let no goals in and have won the league. But what else can we extrapolate?

1) Courinho will win player of the year in every format
2) Mignolet will become a fans favourite in the Grobelaar mould
3) Sturridge will enrage us with his selfishness
4) Sturridge will wow us with his goal scoring record
5) Aspas will be this year's marmite man. We will love and hate him on alternate weekends depending on if he scores or not
6) Lucas will be remembered this season for not being talked about, i.e. he will do his job
7) Gerrard will amaze us with his ability to be in the right place at the right time
8) We will scratch our heads on why we didn't sign Toure years ago as he becomes our new rock in defence who has an uncanny ability to score vital goals
9) Suarez will pick up his championship medal having come off the bench 32 times in season. He will ask for a transfer to a mid table team in order to assure he gets a place in the starting line up

On a personal level by May, I will have bitten my fingers to the bone due to nail biting tension of each game and I will have developed a stalker like crush on Coutinho.

Loving this season already

Believable0 Unbelievable0

"6) Lucas will be remembered this season for not being talked about, i.e. he will do his job".

I can just imagine in 20 years time people saying "Do you remember when we didn't talk about Lucas?" ;)

I have always said future Liverpool captain give the lad time and he will be a great

After watching arsenal and Everton games I think we're better than them, our style has got us creating a lot of chances, a lot more than the others! I will admit I'm scared of Tottenham this year but the other 2 I think just aren't good enough. If we buy Willian we can be title contenders. Apart from man city an spurs (with bale) I think we have the better team and better playing style!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Please don't overreact, we had a good win today champions league is the target :D

Agree0 Disagree0

Title contenders? No way. Top 4 contenders? Definitely! let's learn to walk before we can run!

Agree0 Disagree0

Utd look very ordinary, if they lose rvp with an injury there screwed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Everton might finish ahead of us once or twice in 20yrs so not too bothered. Arsenal though were quite unlucky today w/ the penalty and the red card BUT that Villa team showed that hard work, energy, work ethic and quality at the top end will yield rewards. Arsenal had better get the 55m ready for Suarez because it`s desperation time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Blimey, a scrappy 1-0 win at home against a poor team, who missed a penalty and suddenly you are title contenders. it's a bit of a stretch, 1 game tells us little about anyone otherwise United have already won the title and Arsenal are going to get relegated. I think we need about 10 games before drawing any conclusions.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 17:10:59
Don't think Suarez will fancy going to arsenal after today's events. If we can sign willian this week then we will be seriously challenging top 4 or even better. No Europe this season will be a blessing.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

True but then it means that we shouldn't make too many squad rotations. to find consistency we need a constant starting 11

Agree0 Disagree0

He just used them as a pawn in his scheme. Who in their right mind with any ambition will join that team is beyond me.

anyone else watching this meltdown arsenal are having? This season has started wonderfully for us

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Serves them right for conniving w/ suarez to embarrass us. Him, we can move on from. But Arsenal deserved everything they got today.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lol its 1 game and arsenal basically made the same mistakes they are known to make. its nothing new. people don't prejudge our competition, keep it here, just talk about what we're doing for now.

Same Old Liverpool?

You are forgiven for thinking it. We were all thinking it. All the signs were there.
10 minutes left, Liverpool looking shaky, mignolet nervous, and stoke were pressing.

We haven't won our opening game in 5 years, stoke haven't scored against us at Anfield in 5 . Even Michael Owen was commentating How many times have LFC let wins turn into draws? You couldn't paint the picture any clearer and sure enough.

In the 88th minute a penalty was conceded. And of course it was this year we decided to get rid of our reliable penalty stopper. As we looked enviously over to stokes goalkeeper we were ready on our keyboards and phones what we should have done, who we should have bought, why we are all going to become Tottenham fans, why Liverpool have no hope under Rodgers, why getting into the champions league will only be a theory but then it actually happened for once.

The new signing didn't buckle under the pressure, he didn't get scared by the transfer fee, he didn't get lucky, he didn't somehow score an own goal which wouldn't have been seen if it wasn't for the introduction goal line technology, he didn't panic by the idea his new club haven't been in the top 6 for four years, he didn't think about the giant pay check he would get whether it went in or not. He saved it and we won our opening game of the season, the first game of the 2013-2014 season in one of the most exciting 1-0 games you will ever see.

Liverpool are finally settled, gone is over-played overvalued players, gone is the boring football, gone are the protests about the owners, gone is the worry about the manager, gone was endless journey of underachieving.

We became the same old Liverpool the one that used to win at home, the one that gave standing ovations to the newcomers and the former players, the one that challenged for titles and trophies and showed the world why we are the best football club in the world.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ha ha. calm down son. jesus. it was a scrappy one nil!

Agree0 Disagree0

Great post mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Scrappy 1-0s are what win titles and getting into the champions league.

Mourinho is the best example of this from his first stint.

30 1-0s is better than 25 5-0s.

Just saying.

Serious question for those who slate Lucas on here: What do you think of his performance today?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The kind of of person who doesn't rate Lucas really has no idea about football.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas was awesome today. He reads the game brillaintly and is always there to nick it back for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thought he was very good today. It's not like anyone wants the players to play badly. We all want the best for the football club.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was excellent.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thought he was a big softie but I loved when he stood up for Coutinho against the big bully Nzonzi. Probably hasn't forgotten being chokeslammed by Nzonzi a couple of years ago!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers, all. Appreciate the responses- I too thought he was brilliant today (and probably on my shortlist for MotM which is a tough choice) but I always think he's very good so wasn't sure if perhaps those that thought him under the standard required thought his game today was good enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

I raise my hand up and admit I have doubted Lucas many times, but he did play well today.
That said another DM would not be bad especially when a DM such as Fernando Reges is available for 7M.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucas was boss today and he has been boss fthe year prior to his bad injury against Chelsky.

Said a few days ago, scrappy 1-0 will do me and we got it! Well done Mignolet!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

34 scrappy 1-0 will do for me this season!

Agree0 Disagree0

Sometimes I think a scrappy 1-0 can do wonders for a team, more so than pasting the opponents, if that makes sense.

To me, this is exactly what we weren't able to do the last few years- come away with a bit of a luck and a win even after dominating a game. More of the same effort, hard work, and most importantly team camaraderie and it could be a most interesting season for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think my definition of scrappy is different to other peoples, our play was fluent and penetrating albeit without the finishing. We dominated them with 53% possession I believe so scrappy it was not. Out set piece defending needs some work, but a tall commanding defender would help with that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah, it's all a matter of definition. For me, I'd consider it scrappy as we spent the better part of the last 10 minutes just trying to get the ball as far away from our goal as possible- game plan went a bit out the window and everyone worked very hard to keep us on top = scrappy (for me).

Cheers {Ed002's Note - It i not related to Liverpool as you note.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well if he has played for Monaco already he could only go back atletico Madrid, cause you can only play for a max of 2 teams inside a year. This is of course if the these posts are to be believed. Which I know noting about. {Ed002's Note - A season, not a year.}

Interesting to see some people saying Enrique had an excellent game. I personally felt he wasted possession a lot, (which I have thought about him for a while) particularly higher up the pitch. Very frustrating to watch!

Delighted to win now and can relax while watching the rest of the weekends games. Well done lads.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I wouldn't brand it excellent, but good. He did a job, some good parts, some not.

Agree0 Disagree0

Overall he did very well. Both full backs give great width.only concern is when we lose it high up the pitch. Look vulnerable on the counter although a stoke only had one dangerous counter in the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally wasn't too impressed. His first touch is terrible. His decision making when up the top of the field is questionable a couple of times he shot when he should have laid it off. Hopefully Aly Cisscho pardon the spelling will easily dislodge Jose.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 16:02:14
Agger gave away a penalty for the second consecutive opening fixture but this time it was irrelevant. Sturridge has opened his account for this season, Aspas seems suited to the BPL, Toure was quality and Mignolet kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty. Temporarily top of the league and are already 3 points up on this time last season.

Rodgers needs to give sterling a roasting for giving the free kick away that led to the Stoke penalty, was not brave enough to put his head up for a ball so decided to go with a high boot, needs to be brave if he is to become a premiership player.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Dude I agreee with you, I know how it sounds but that was a stupid decision from raheem, and not the first time he did stupid foul under 30 m from our goal, but oke no negative stuff, I only broke my keyboard (watching a game on internet) when I saw a penality was awarded, and than again I when it was saved.

Agree0 Disagree0

Exactly what I was thinking when say that challenge. It was a lazy, half-hearted attempt that almost cost us dearly.

Agree0 Disagree0

The only thing I got from that was.

Charley played umpteen games for us, took sooooo many set pieces and not one and I mean one set piece was as good as the one he decided to throw in against Liverpool.

Good game, played well. I know people will moan that we didn't score more, but Begovic fair shout he was immense. Some of his saves, were incredible, Henderson, Gerrard, Enrique etc.

Pros.
- Good creative, fluid play, going forward.
- Aspas, Coutinho and Sturridge linked up well.
- Henderson, Gerrard, Lucas solid as always.
- Toure what a player, so passionate love him already. Ran over to celebrate with Sturridge, grabbed Mignolet. That's what I love to see.
- Agger what were you doing, but solid as always and did well.
- Johnson and Enrique good on the flanks.
- Mignolet as others have said shaky start, grew into the match after flying save in first half and fantastic double save from penalty love this guy. When was the last time we saved a penalty?

Cons.
- Enrique needs to work on his crossing and shoot less when so far away. Is that what Cissokho will bring to the side??
- Aspas looked really good, linked well with Coutinho and Sturridge. But on occasion looked a bit light weight and his first touch needs work. But I believe when he gets used to the pace of Prem he'll be top quality.
- Need to work on our defending from set pieces, looked suspect against stoke. I think we need a big, tall CB.

Other than that really pleased with our forward line, if we can add Willian on another player upfront. Wow!!!

some great performances today. I said toward the end of last season that this year coutinho would do what bale did last year and win player/young player of the year and I still stand by that he was outstanding today, I may get slaughtered for this but he is closest thing to iniesta I've seen (not as good as him yet obviously). Lucas was immense today as well. biggest positive for me was how well the new signings looked, they all looked like they have been there for years.
People may say it was a bit like last year where we are dominating games but not winning but I think the difference now is that this was the type of game we would have drawn last year so very happy with performance, not perfect but hey 3 points and top of the league i'll take that :)

What a great game that was. and the last 5 minutes were just unbelievable . we played soo soo well nd great attacking football. if that goalkeeper hadnt done ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENTLY we would have atleast scored 3 . 1 from gerrard free kick another from henderson's shot that he flicked onto the post . I was impressed by all our players. Lucas was exceptional nd it was him maybe who made a goal line clearance in the first half. gerrard was impressive as always. sturridge scored a stunner. coutinho played well. enrique was very very good. johnson defended well in a long time. toure hit the post. but two players who impressed me most were ASPAS nd HENDERSON. hats off to them both. aspas was involved in that great hendo opportunity that struck the post nd was moving exceptionally well all the time nd arguable the best of our forward players. nd hendo was like a beast. running running and running all the tym . had great pace moving forward. also made some great efforts . overall great game. 1 we conceded the penalty so late on I thought OH NOT AGAIN!. The most beautiful part of the game was the moment when almost every1 gathered around mignolet to give em a WEIRD passionate hug. showed that it meant as much as to them as it means to us. Our players didn't want to disappoint us again. they were more relieved than we were.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well how good was Toure today! Could be a cult hero in the making!

I thought Aspas was awesome. His link up play was good and he has a trick to get past someone. Showed real football intelligence at times as well.

I think it's fair to as Mignolet was bound to be nervous - totally different laying for Liverpool than Sunderland. No dis respect to Sunderland.

It doesn't matter how you win the first game, as long as you do!

Good start

The positives

1 - 3 points
2 - top of the league
3 - a clean sheet
4 - superb interplay, brilliant movement, lots of chances created in behind a very defensive outfit
5 - Our ability to win the ball back for 75 minutes was a key part(Lucas outstanding)
6 - their keeper MOM (again)
7 - our keeper gains a huge boost through that penalty save
8 - I thought the FBs were excellent. both at the back and going forward
9 - the players mostly seem comfortable in our slick passing style, so BR can take a big tick for that one.

The negatives

1 - only one chance converted
2 - we got very nervy against them late on
3 - our ball retention dropped alarmingly in the last 15 minutes, and I thought the midfield went missing.
4 - we looked in trouble every time the ball was tossed in.
5 - our lack of height and a dominant aerial centre-half caused us problems and will do again unless sorted.
6 - keeper's distribution looks poor. This could hamper our ability to play from the back
7 - Henderson, although showing bags of energy, looked the least comfortable player in the system.

Overall, a very positive showing. Not getting the three points would have been a travesty, but if we continue to be profligate it will cost us in tight games.

I think the game showed several things we need to address.

Conversion of chances is still not good enough for top four, and we don't appear to be about to solve that problem. Willian (if he comes) doesn't score and Suarez has a poor conversion ratio anyway.

The signing of an all-conquering defensive monster is a priority.

On a final note, we can take heart from this, albeit a narrow 1-0 win against one of the favorites for relegation. Tougher tests are to come, but it looks like the very least we get is an enjoyable style of football.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Excellent post. v accurate!

Agree0 Disagree0

Not havin a go here because I actually agree with most of what you said but i'm just curious if we did sign a defensive monster as you called him, would you drop agger or toure?

Agree0 Disagree0

Probably I would leave out Agger when we need to be strong like against Stoke, possibly Toure when we need ball-playing against teams like Spurs and Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Went to the game, great great atmosphere. Fans seem to have more optimism this year, which is amazing.
Agger needs to get more sharper, abit weak for us today. Toure was quality, so strong.
Gerrard touched the ball more times than I have ever seen, darting everywhere.
Coutinho and Sturridge, electric.
Left back and left wing need work for me, not very diverse.
But a win.A WIN! So happy

What an awesome start to this season! Boy did I have my heart in my mouth towards the end. How about Mingolet eh? Great comeback by him.
We played Stoke off the park for most of the first half - there are goals in this team, I just feel aspas and a couple of others need a goal or two and then we could see them at their best. Here's hoping the lads keeping getting wins and get more clinical as the season progresses. As for Stoke, we knew what we were going to get and boy did they test our defenders and young Simon. We still look shaky as a defensive unit against set pieces but hey we pulled through and got the three points. The debutants did well, aspas particularly looked lively and it seems the good pre season will stand us in good stead. The one issue I had was Enrique's wastefulness in the final third, it will be interesting to see whether he can hold onto his place this season.
Great win! Just another 37 to go.

Superb today, positives:

-Toure was immense at the back
-Mignolet's confidence will be sky high
-Dominated play
-Coutinho gets better and better
-Aspas linked well within the team, looked fluid
-Enrique had a crackin'game
-Sturridge looks to have plenty of goals in him

negatives:

-Aggers handball was stupid, hopefully does not happen again
-Mignolet a bit 'flappy' early on
-Inability to get 2nd goal slightly disconcerting (not to mention close to killing me through heart failure)
-Left Wing needs attention

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Toure was an absolute rock and a goal threat, Henderson didn't stop and could have had 2 goals from some intelligent runs.

WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! LFC is off to the races. Played a great game. and Migs? LEGEND! He was shaky and nervous which was understandable BUT he made THE save when it mattered. However, we need to defend set-pieces and balls into the box MUCH better. We outplayed them completely and without Begovic in fine form, it could have been a cricket score. All in all, I`ll take 3 points any way I can get them. On to Villa, next week. YWNA!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

17 Aug 2013 14:47:34
MIGNOLET!!

Don't worry fellas, we won't play against Begovic every week. Remember when we were linked with him earlier in the summer? Fantastic keeper.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mignolet made my day

Believable0 Unbelievable0

17 Aug 2013 14:46:26
OMG! That was absolutely nerve-wrecking, but what a game to win! Witnessed everything good, bad and ugly! Toure was colossal, Mignolet was really nervy early on but redeemed himself with a great penalty save ala Pepe! Coutinho my MOTM - absolutely genius at work! Fantastic 3 points and opening win against a notorious long-ball team. Viva Reds!

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Daniel Agger is a defensive weak link for us.
Nearly cost us yet another game.
Turning into Pepe Reina with his dip in form the past 2 years.
Hope Barca take him and we replace with a consistant performer.
I know people will disagree but just look at the numerous times last season he fell asleep.
Stoke away, United away, Arsenal away.
Just 3 off the top of my head.
He's committed yes, but he's become a weak link and has no mobility to recover, see Lukaku goal at Anfield last season as a clear example.
Thank god we won today, needed that so so much.
Phew!
Next 2 games will be tough.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Seriously mate can't believe you actually said those words. Weakest link? He is one of the best defs in the world, and that is the reason Barca want to have him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Didn't say weakest link!
Said he's become a weak link.
Enrique and Johnson for me are our weakest links in defence along with Coates unfortunately.
Delighted with the win though!

17 Aug 2013 14:44:50
Clean sheet, penalty save, dominant possession, multiple chances, 3 points.

All sounds good and I'm happy with the first game.

But Brendan needs to get to grips with our lack of composure in front if goal.

1 down, 37 to go!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Toure was a giant today, coutinho was a wizard but nearly the same old Liverpool lots of chances but always prone to a defensive mistake

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Aspas excellent
Mignolet excellent (after some nervy moment)
We've played well today dominated most of the game, if it wasn't for their man of the mach bercovic we would have scored more.
3 points better than everyone else good start, onward and upwards LFC!

Phew, a win. Am getting a bit pee'd off about how many opposition keepers at anfield get MOTM.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Just shows how good we are with the ball. Just need early goals to settle us down. We haven't been top 4 for ages - this team must to learn to play well and kill teams off and play poorly and nick it. We need several 5 game winning runs this season and to lose no more than 6 in the season. That will be op 4.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 14:43:06
Mignolet just underlined why he was a good purchase. What a save. For me that was a solid performance, looked shakey at times but against such a physical team we did well. Up the Pool.

Mignolet you beauty, we made seriously hard work of that one boys but it would have been a travesty had we lost, thought we played some good football but also thought our passing was a little over zealous at times, made the player receiving the ball look a bit daft when he couldn't control it. Still work to do in defence but happy with the win.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The team showed spirit and togetherness through out. I think they were just nervous and eager to do well. Migs? AWESOME!

Liverpool still know how to make it stressful and hard work don't they!

At least this time we have a lead though rather than frustratingly trying to get a foot in front or come from behind. BUT I wish they could put a second in so I can actually enjoy the rest!

FOR:

1 - 0 up
slick passing (rain has helped)
Coutinho
Sturridge looks reasonably fit
Mingolet's superb save

AGAINST

Mingolet looks ultra nervous.
We look suspect from corners
Plenty of chances, (yet again), but only one goal to show for it

well good start. Wish DS would have made 1 or 2 more passes than he did, especially at start there were a couple of much better options. However, well pleased if we can get another early all would be great!

Defensively we need to be more alert though

Poor Coutinho those rugby boys are giving him a right kicking, let's hope he has the last laugh. Very good game so far, the ref's letting Stoke RC get away with a bit like. We are in desperate need of a left winger fingers crossed Rodgers buys some more quality.

I think you should have paid the extra couple of million and bought Begovic.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What a time to scuff a penalty. Only one place it was going, keeper's bottom left like always with Walters. I think Adam should have taken it. Liverpool deserved win, but were very lucky at the end there and there are weaknesses in there. Three points is all that matters and my bet has survived a potential banana skin.

Agree0 Disagree0

Got to disagree with you there syd lol but it was just great to see a penalty saved at anfield doesn't happen often but mignolet looked great today couple of crosses looked a little flappy but other than that tied in with the penalty save he did a top notch job but begovic kept it at 1 nil 70% of other keepers played against could have been 3 to 4 nil easily just happy to get the win on opening day

i think stoke will press very high. i'm sure walters will chase down our full backs when we have possession

so I hope brendan has a very plans up his sleeve this season. and also makes the team get the ball up top quicker

we all know other managers know how brendan likes to play. so let's hope the defence do not pass the ball 100 times around the back inviting pressure

i think we will do well. today if we speed up the play

Anyone else have a sneaky feeling that Kolo Toure is actually going to turn out to be a very good piece of business?

I'm not too sure about Willian, especially at the reported price!

I would use Wisdom as centre back cover instead of going out and buying another. Agger, Toure, Wisdom, Coates, Skrtel is enough if none of them leave.

I would like to see us go for Lamela instead, has there been any concrete interest in him ed? i've heard rumours that spurs may be looking at him should Bale finally move on

Dear eds and all, I am a huge Liverpool fan but am fairly young, and don't really come from a footballing family, so I was wondering If anyone could tell me the best way to get tickets. As I'm sure your aware, it is notoriously difficult to get ahold of Liverpool tickets, certainly from the club itself and definitely when compared to other clubs (the manis have got season tickets going spare) and it seems that you have to know someone if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

My personal experience is if you have to buy tickets off a site they're anywhere between 110-200 pound depending on who we are playing, a lot of the time you won't be sent a ticket you will be sent a membership card which you swipe to get in for home games, and I usually get one with a girls name on it lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Very thin? Yeah right mate. Keep trying to create a worthwhile post mate it may come one day, then again probably not.

Agree0 Disagree0

Doesn't look thin really especially when you consider it is without skrtel, Kelly, cissokho (who we now know will join), Suarez, assiadi and probably two players added to that

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2013 11:54:58

Believable0 Unbelievable0

17 Aug 2013 11:51:58
Liverpool are protecting themselves to get the best price for Suarez. Players will be contractually restricted from talking openly about club activities to the media. All businesses have these media clauses in their contracts.

Look, I'm not saying I'm some guy in the know, I got a call off a mates dad who explained the conversation he had with Ibe, and as far as the players are concerned Suarez is all but gone.

Well count down has truly begun

49 years old and pacing around as excited as much as a 5 year old on Christmas Eve - the wife is fed up with me already as she is asking questions about other stuff and I am not hiding the fact I am not interested in anything else - gutted that I can't make the match.

My view on the window so far - not that it counts for much anyway

Pretty good so far - only one that really surprised me going out was Pepe - didn't see that coming and I think a real shame about Jonjo maybe he tried to hard and it just didn't work out.

On the incomings only time will tell and when they have that famous red shirt on - they will get my support and will never walk alone

So by 3 pm I will be elated or gutted and my weekend ruined!

So here's to the first match

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Phil, great post by the way.
You just summed up exactly how I am feeling in terms of excitement, the fact the misses has gone out and said how I don't go out enough with her and the kids because of my hobbies (LFC), and for ignoring her a little.

And like you win or lose, the weekend ends after the match. until match of the day when I get to see how everyone else does

Ed049

You mentioned something about Willian being a strong possibility. Do you really think we can pull this one off?

PS. Buzzing for the start of the season, come on the reds! {Ed049's Note - If personal terms are agreed I don't see why agreeing a fee should be an issue as Liverpool are willing to spend. In my opinion 30 million should do it. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

17 Aug 2013 10:11:26
I think we are going into this season a little weak at the back. I was hoping for another top class CB and a DM. Overall though I must admit we look great going forward, I just hope without Suarez we can still put teams away. Absolutely can not wait, COME ON YOU REDS. Setting off after a full english

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lucky man full English, the game sounds like a dream ha ha have a great day m8

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think so, we've only lost Carragher at the back this season. We've got plenty of players who we could use all across defence (providing we sign Cissokho).

As for DM, if we play 4-2-3-1 again, we've got 3 players (Gerrard, Lucas and Allen) for 2 positions, which isn't great, but should be fine. Should we lose two of our DM I'm sure Rodgers will change the system like he's done in the past to suite the players we have.

Agree0 Disagree0

Is there anywhere to watch this match other than BT Sport

If we do sign willian, that's one hell of an attack.

Sturridge up top with Willian, Coutinho and Suarez behind and Lucas and Gerrard in centre mid.

If we can add Sakho and sell Skrtl then I'd say that was a good summer transfer window.

Just a "good" summer? If we get WIllian, Cissokho and Sakho, I would say it is borderline the best window we would have had!

I think BR and FSG are trying to create foundations for the growth of our wonderful club. We may not get top four, we may have lost the ability to attract the top, top signings, but we are Liverpool with the best fans in the world (all over it!). Believable0 Unbelievable0

17 Aug 2013 09:41:29
He's played 4 games and has 3 assists this season - Man of the match twice

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair you can't really judge a player like that. You have to watch him play a few games. I know what you mean he ain't going to score loads of goals but he is up there with assists.

Agree0 Disagree0

Watched a couple of youtube clips? Know nothing about the player, yet you question his valuation? Hmmm.

Agree0 Disagree0

Montagers are obsessed with skills, watch one of the videos where it shows every touch he takes in a match, they show a player much better

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Liverpool now have a good scouting set up and if they feel he is good enough to play for us then trust them
The days of Comolli are over

Scouts only watch a player. Eyes on for 90 mins - they don't watch the game, just the man. It's slightly more scientific than YouTube.

Received my Brand New Coutinho 2013-2014 Away Kit Yesterday. Sadly its a few sizes too small. So this morning, my wife who knows nothing about football will have to parade around the local mall with it. I'll just imitate the Manager.

Could the fact we let Downing leave this week be an Indication that we are definitely about to sign Willian, and that talks have been ongoing for some time?

If true and he does sign its a positive move, plus the recent apology by Suarez looks like we will get another season from him.

Cissoko seems a solid player and will be good cover. Happy with how the squad is shaping, and a lot of the players Rodgers didn't want who we're high earners have virtually now all gone.
The wagebill has now been significantly reduced with our summer dealings.

The squad is beginning to look really good, and if Willian does arrive we have an abundance of pace flair and goal threat from our attacking players.

Just one to put out there but could we not include Skrtle in the Willian deal and this way move another high earner off the wagebill? This would also reduce the fee for Willian.

Money saved (10-12 million) could be used to buy an Alderweireld or Papadopulos.

Optimism is starting to lift again after that mid transfer window worry when we wernt signing players and only offloading them.

Our defence at present is Mignolet, Enrique, Agger, Kelly, Johnson, Toure. I still expect to see Skrtle, Coates leave and Wisdom go on loan. We have Cissokho arriving this week and one of Alderweireld or Papadopulos would give us a strong defence. De Vrij would also be another good option.

In midfield we have Gerrard, Allen, Henderson, Srerling, Ibe, Lucas and Alberto. I still expect to see Assiaidi leave and we are potentially gaining Willian this week. For me that's a strong midfield with pace, goals and creativity.

In attack we have Sturridge, Aspas, Borini, Coutinho and looks increasingly likely Suarez is staying if so that's a really good attack.

I think Rodgers has done really well offloading the players he didn't want and who were on high wages. The wagebill must have decreased drastically this summer which is only good.

Still two weeks of the window to go so still possible for more recruits to arrive and other players to leave. Still also two weeks of will Eriksen sign or not, but if we sign Willian I think that will end any interest we had in him.

Morning All, hugely excited about today and feeling much more confident about the upcoming season. We need to get off to a good start particularly at home and I believe we will start with a win against Stoke City this afternoon. If, and it's still a big If LFC can retain the services of Suarez and pull of the signing off Willian then we will have more than hope this season of making the top four! City have strengthened and could take some stopping for the title but Pellegrini knows very little about the EPL and may take some time to get settled, the pressure will come on UTD when Moyes loses two games on the trot and that Will happen (the sooner the better) Arsenal look desperate and if they start slowly their rich fans will undoubtedly turn on the team and Wenger! Chelsea under Jose will be more up than down but it is a very different league than when Mourinho was here last time so it is not a given that he will be as strong this time around despite the obvious quality Chelsea possess! As for Everton they will lose one or two more players this season before the end of the transfer window and that will put pressure on their small squad in Martinez first season! So that leaves us with Spurs who have signed good players this season and will probably strengthen further when Bale leaves for Real Madrid! This gives them a good chance of improving into the top four this season and probably makes them a bigger threat than most! But my attention is on all on LFC and with the addition of one or two more quality players we need to push on early whilst the other new managers are finding their feet, be in and around the top floor by January and then add a new face or two to complete our transition back in the competitions we have historically been successful in over our illustrious past! Get behind the team boys this is where BR shows us why he is the right man for the job and all he needs now is our support! YNWA . Let us know what you all think!

It is believed that BR has a maximum of £30m to spend this window (this includes all the money raised from outgoings) and he is trying to make 3 additions LB, LW, CB. The LB seems to be sorted on loan through Cissoyho but the other 2 are proving tricky. Willian is a possible but £30m is too much as nothing left for a CB so there has been talk of Skrtel being offered as part of the deal ie £22m + Skrtel for Willian. This would leave £8m for Sakho our preferred CB option. If all 3 happen by end of the window I believe we have a great squad to push for top 4. Let's hope it all goes to plan!

Ohhhhh nothing like the first proper day of the season. Over in Kosovo though at the mo so the seaso ticket is being looked after by one of my brothers. Got to go to my dodgy betty and put my coupon on, stayin clear of our match tho, nothing worse when your coupon goes first match haha. Got my sky box here and BT sport up and running so happy days. Anyone nervous? Would love a win but cannot see past a draw, am I being too down-beat there?

Anyway glad the Suarez saga will be over in 2 weeks for better or worse and this Willian guy well i'll believe it when I see it. Coutinho and Sturridge I feel are key this season!

Hi Eds,

Wllians a good player yeah? Iv never seen him play. But surely for the reported 30m price tage Liverpool could get Eriksen and Sakho?

Glad we got another left bk in Aly Cissokho. Solid left bk.

I think eriksen is a great player, but where would he fit in? He plays behind the striker, which is where coutinho will play this season. If and it's a huge if that Suarez stays, and Willian is signed, then we will have 3 forwards all comfortable playing anywhere across that front line. With no set formation, just interchanging throughout the game making it a defenders nightmare.
Agree on sahko, great player. But don't like the way eriksen is pimping him self out to anybody that will listen, think its very disrespectful to Ajax. {Ed049's Note - Sakho will be a cover at LCB, we need someone who can play on the right side of the Central Defence. }

Agree0 Disagree0

Well if that is the case, I doubt very much it would happen, why would he leave psg's bench to sit on ours. He wants first team football. Great player tho, maybe he's being looked at if agger were to leave for barca. I actually think toure is going to do a decent job this year, and maybe Kelly should be given a fair chance to show what he can do if called upon. Not sure we need to go out and spend 18m on papadopalous, or anyone else when we have young talented players at the club already.

Morning eds and all, can't sleep with excitement so I said i'd share a few thoughts. Apologies for the long post.
Glad to see cissoko arriving, very experienced defender with around 35 champs league appearances so definetly looking forward to him.
With blanc confirming that sakho wants to leave I think we should definetly go for him even if it is just a loan. he's a hungry young player who needs a good season ahead of the world cup and he could well have that at LFC.
Hopefully these reports of willian signing are true as he will link up beautifully with the boys. If we don't get him i'm sure they will line up someone else.
Finally with inter milan apparently looking to free up some money again, how much do you think freddy guarin could go for eds? Not saying we would go for him but I wouldn't mind having him and lucas as my 2 dm's. It would be gas if we bought guarin for a cheap fee and he turned out to awesome for us like little phillippe.
Come on you reds, can't wait, just another 8 hours.

Can someone tell me how is it that we sell a man with definite promise in jonjo shelvey yet we keep hold and look to loan out again a certain dani pacheco who I think has had more than enough of a chance and we all know he's a bit second rate?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Shelvey doesn't suite our system and if he's going to make it at the top, he'd need plenty of game time, which we weren't able to provide. He is a trier and other teams see that, so clubs want him.

Pacheco is the opposite, he might suite our system, but he always moans and doesn't show effort, the club are trying to loan him out for this season as I believe it's his last year of his contract. There was a reason we didn't play him in the Europa League when we were short of strikers and put Shelvey on instead. Pacheco has been out on loan four times and has only done well in the Spanish 3rd division. He'll see out his contract and find work elsewhere.

I don't understand Liverpool.
We all know suarez is going.
We all know anzhi offloading players.
We all know we in for willian.
In my opinion he will turn out and be the best in the league along side sturridge.
So I wanted to know why haven't we gone in for any other anzhi players?
Eto'o be the ideal replacement for a year or so 5m most probs could get him.
Boussafa? Isit? really talented footballer could go for him.
Anyone else we have gone in for or maybe bided on.
Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi mate, I think it's probably because we're not interested in them? Rodgers is looking for a very specific type of player with a win or die mentality and most importantly who can fit into our system.

On the etoo front not sure if any of the eds can back this up but isn't he one of the highest paid footballers in the world? Something crazy like £300k a week?

if we buy william then him and couthino will be on the save wave length which some defences won't be able to handle plus put lucas in and we have a very good attack midfield and lucas moping up it will be good to see william and couthino doing their samba tricks on the pitch for us, I thought we would not buy anyone so I've got the egg on my face if we sign william but as someone said if downing is worth 20 mill then william is well worth 30 mill .Teams will be very wary of our team if we get him who will they mark couthino or william or sturridge or gerrard and then maybe suarez, if we get william we could even go on to win the prem

I used to laugh at middle-aged blokes wearing football shirts but . well, here I am.
I can't wait for tomorrow!. I'm wearing my new 2012/13 top (cheaper) and I've re-checked the kick-off time.1245 (silly time)
The top fits me (a blessing) and my season-ticket is still where it was when I checked 10 minutes ago!
Have I covered every base?. Parking, petrol, food, cash, season-ticket.check. I'm ready.
Goddam shirt feels a little tight around the shoulders. not bad for a tenner though!
Must remember to set my alarm. frickin' early kick-offs!
Will we win?. it's only Stoke so. yes.
I've been impressed with our pre-season. Aspas, Mignolet, Toure and Alberto have all done well!
I hoped we'd sign a "marquee" player (sounds like a circus performer) but I'm sure we'll cope.
Coutinho's a wizard and will be too classy for Stoke. I hope Ibe plays a part.
Anyway, got to go 'cos the shirt's getting itchy and I have to make sure I'm ready for the kick-off!

Well it's nearly upon us and let's hope the mighty reds continue this season as they ended last season. I, as always, will be honest in my opinion and I thought at the start of last season BR was not the right choice. He came in and in many peoples eyes changed our style of play, which I doubted, having watched KK's team dominant games and not win.

However, having watched last season and see us grow and develop (JH anyone?) into a more rounded team I am really excited about this season. I do feel sometimes BR should say now't and get on with it, but equally we moaned when previous managers said less!

I personally have been impressed with his signings to date (and hopefully future one's before the window ends), all 4 players look decent and as I have said previously, BR signs players that suit his style of play, not just because they are available.

I have been impressed with his and FSG's handling of LS, for me if he wants out then bye, take the right price and go. I only want players who WANT to play for my club and are willing to give their all, not stroppy players who want out when it suits, regardless of how good they are.

I like all reds want us to get off to a flying start and hopefully we will. let's get behind them and BR, let's back them and believe in them so they believe in us and themselves!

I must admit after his behaviour I wanted Suarez to leave, but if we have Suarez, Coutinho, Willian and Sturridge that is quality.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree mate exiting times especialy when u consider they will have stevie.g hendo and lucas behind them! I think if the teams gels top 4 could become reality

Agree0 Disagree0

Not forgetting Aspas. If Willian did come, it's a measure of our squad when you find it difficult to play Aspas. For me the best front 4 in the country and with that little magician Coutinho pulling the strings behind them, its a frightening prospect. We need to keep Coutinho fit. He's the key.
To say I'm excited at the moment is an understatement, I just hope the team plays to its potential and gets some consistency, so we're not all on here tomorrow wondering how we lost to Stoke!
In reality, going into the game tomorrow, we've swapped Reina for Mignolet, Carragher for Toure and Aspas for Suarez in terms of how we finished games last season. So I'm trying to stop myself getting too carried away!

New season starts tomorrow. as always very very excited and optimistic but I hope my expectations are met and its nothing like last seasons 3 nil defeat against west brom which was a real reality check and set the tone for the stop start season.

I honestly think by looking at our first 10 fixtures that we should be able to get 7 wins and a draw from em perhaps ( points in the mid 20's) from there December is probably the toughest month with three big away fixtures and if we can survive that then top four should be a real possibility.

Additionally ed can you please give your view on what type of player willian is, whether he is worth the 25-30 million and is he a real possibility? many thanks

Happy with the signing of cissokho, always looked a little shabby defensively but going forward the guys a menace, although against the bigger clubs we will still opt for enrique, as defensively he edges it but against the smaller clubs that set up shop, cissokho will give us that little extra! Anyone else think that? Trying not to get carried away with willian signing but that is rather exciting news and just hope we follow through with the deal this time and move quickly as there are clubs who can offer him champions league football, we all saw what happened with mkhitaryan! Hello Eds,
a couple of questions
1) Regarding Willian, a number of journos reporting we are in discussions to sign him. But a few sites reporting interest from ManU. Now I know they were approached to ask if they were interested but are they genuinely in for him?

2) Do you reckon after Cissokho and Willian, a top CB is still on the agenda?
Would love Papadopoulos but feel after blowing major money on Willian,
Sakho would be a more affordable and equally good option. {Ed002's Note - I have explained all of this.}
