Just want to wish Stuart Downing Well at the Boro - I have a soft spot for the Boro after living up there for 9 years with work. Hope he fires them back to the Prem.

cant wish him anything andy! think he was the most gutless player to pull on a Liverpool shirt?

17 Jul 2015 00:51:47
john it wasn't really his fault bad purchase not good enough to play for a top 6 team looked like a dear in the headlights but to be fair to him he should have had 12 assists but carrol missed them all then fans see his stats 1 assist can't remember goals low tho and everyone gets on his case confidence goes from low to crushed not a bad player for a smaller club just no good for team trying to get in the top 4

The first game I watched at anfield, downing scored his first goal and ran off celebrating like it was the norm, assisted too I think, a rarety in itself

You don't remember Harry Kewell??

Agree0 Disagree1

17 Jul 2015 08:10:18
Well then Scouse John you never watched him play.

You try playing left wing when Enrique keeps using you for dummy runs, whilst trying to go solo,looking for an overlap and Enrique runs 20 yards into the middle of the park.Running back 50 yards because enrique lost the ball in the opponents area instead of passing.Then when BR finally has enough of Enrique,forces you to play left back in Europe a position you clearly don't know well just off the cuff,without any planning.

Downing for me gave effort and when finally played in the role he preferred without a moron next to him,he excelled. He always did well when played on the right with johnson.

Agree2 Disagree1

17 Jul 2015 09:36:58
It's odd enough that he's dropping down. He was West Ham's star player the first 3 months of last season and he was in top form. Has he just aged an incredible amount in the past 6 months? I know they are aiming higher but he should have been kept, imo, as he can play any attacking position behind a striker.

Not good enough for us and I don't think he tried hard enough until it was too late. Still wish him all the best though, they can't all work out he is only human.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Jul 2015 10:12:47
West ham stopped playing him in the number 10 role. I think they started with a diamond with him at the tip then went to a flat 4-4-2 and then their poor form began. Even then in that poor form,he was still their best player by far and really put in some shifts.

Gutted to see that Brian Hall has passed away. Leukaemia is the same thing that Brad Jones' s son had as well.

Hall was only 68 years old and I believe he played well over 150 games for us and won a fair few titles in his time as well.

RIP mate. YNWA.

I'd be amazed if Salah joins after the way he

A. Joined Chelsea
B. Spoke about LFC at the time
c. Refused to see out his loan with Fiorentina
D. Has all but refused to train now back at Chelsea
E. Hasn't settled AT all in England

NOT a top 6 player IMO.

DEFFO not for us.

Maybe Ed002 (As she is a Chelsea supporter) can tell you more about him.

But for me seems another Sterling type with attitude and we don't need a player like that at Pool again.

vrcomp
Y.N.W.A.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Salah decided he did not want the second year of his loan with Fiorentina, but doesn't want to play in England as he failed to settle. He has not "refused" to train with Chelsea but has been left out of the tour. Other clubs are interested.}

16 Jul 2015 22:14:01
Edd002 if I may. I saw you mention how Liverpool like players with stupid haircuts. Just wandering if anfields redevelopment will have hair stylist in place to keep up with all the latest line shaving and bleaching. Benteke also has the hair for such a style so I think the club could make back a bit of the money spent on players this window?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - You have just found out why Sakho is not being sold. #WonderDogSparky explained his role last year on Twitter.}

17 Jul 2015 07:02:55
I have to ask. is that you?

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Jul 2015 07:36:11
Ed can you or one of the posters explain where the name kirikou (think that was it) for sakho came? Is it as simple as a middle name or am I really missing some reference? It's the one of yours that always bugged me.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It comes from the name of a fictional African boy that has certain powers and embarks on a series of adventures. It has been popular in France as a cartoon. The cartoon boy has a similar haircut, hence the name.}

17 Jul 2015 10:42:14
I just found him there and I'm in stitches mate. that is a quality reference I half thought that you were giving another story with that response but it is a uncanny resemblance! Respect given for that one!

16 Jul 2015 22:11:25
Hi guys first time posting but just wanted to let you all know that I'm hearing that we may well be looking to bring arda turan in on a short term loan due to barca restrictions. They accept he may well need to go out on loan, but don't want him playing for a champions league team, we will be the chosen destination for the player who is constantly linked to us. Keep up the good work eds

Believable1 Unbelievable7

{Ed002's Note - So if Liverpool want to leave Firmino out of the equation for a few months and disrupt the team, this would be a great way to do it.}

16 Jul 2015 23:05:16
We don't need to loan player for half a season. What is the point? Play our own players. We are Liverpool FC and should not be loaning players!!

I must admit that I haven't really watched Benteke play to judge him, but from reading comments on this site he is skillful, fast, strong, can score goals and obviously expensive. Some would say he is average and ed001 mentioned he doesn't work hard enough. So my question is this, if he buckles down and works hard and scores his goals, do you see him turning into an excellent signing?

Believable7 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - If he scores goal he is doing the job he is employed for.}

17 Jul 2015 07:41:10
Yeah mate it will come down to how benteke applies himself when he signs. All the attributes are there for him to score goals for fun and he is a monster. He never did press for villa although villa are not a pressing team so there are two sides to that coin. He will not hassle defenders like Suarez but I'm positive he will also do more than balo. As I said it's down to him really as the ability to press is really a mindset/determination as much as anything else.

{Ed002's Note - So that would be to replace Firmino and disrupt the team for a few months?}

16 Jul 2015 23:02:06
Have to agree with Ed002 - we've got a shedload of new players coming in, a new backroom staff, and, like Carra said, an opening fixture list that looks like it was drawn up by a committee consisting of the managers of our rivals. We need togetherness and a trench warfare, backs to the wall, No Paseran! spirit. We do not need players whose focus will not be getting injured for their parent club, who will be off without feeling consequences if we don't win, and who will displace our regulars. These are human beings, not computer sprites, and need to be managed and gel as a team,. Rant over.

Danny ward helped Aberdeen to a stunning away win to Rijeka in their Europa league qualifier first leg.

Aberdeen ran out 3-0 winners but largely against the run of play. A shock result in European football.

Ward was central to the win pulling off a number of fine saves in both the first and second half

I haven't looked it up, but I imagine that bar Sturridge, benteke has scored more premier league goals that the rest of the squad put together has scored for liverpool?
I know benteke has about 40 odd, a bar maybe 25/30 for coutinho Henderson and skrtel, I can't imagine there's many more.

Obviously not including milners/ings/lambert etc goals for other clubs

Can't believe this bumming Gerrard rubbish all the time, would you be proud to look at a medal in you cupboard that you had nothing to do with except made a last minute appearance for.

Loan move back has already been rumoured, so it's not like he may solely be seen to be jumping on the band wagon.

However, I don't see that he could contribute enough to warrant a loan move and if the team is doing that well, don't upset the rhythm.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Jul 2015 01:07:52
he should take a loan to celtic stroll in the park for him up there and a gaurenteed league title

2 cumbersome centre forwards ?? Benteke would play up on he's own I'd imagine with firmino coutino Milner Henderson so where behind . If so, and because we have all been very good today, as a special little treat. would you be able to give us all a insight into who they are targeting, if anyone?

Thanks in advance Eds

Before anyone starts with the negative reaction on Benteke's impending arrival. Just try this. Imagine Mignolet's goal kicks last season. Now close your eyes, imagine Benteke receiving the ball. Now do you feel better? This season will be a good one.

Bit of a strange question for you Eds. Say Liverpool were keen on a player, but they found out the player had a chronic fear of flying. Would that be an issue ? with all the traveling involved nowadays's. Tours to far flung places & European games.

Thanks.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No it would not be a major issue. Liverpool only play in Europe for short periods nowadays and driving or getting a train is not a major problem. Merson and Bergkamp both had major issues flying when at Arsenal.}

Jesus Navas of Manchester City used to have a well documented "fear of traveling" which forced him to miss many games for Spain and Sevilla, and reject many transfer offers. But it seems he has overcome the fear after intensive counseling and treatment.

I've said before and not just now it looks confirmed. Benteke will be awesome. He will be that power we've missed in recent times.
Here's a thought as to why we don't cross the ball in as many as suggesting is a problem for this move to work. Why would we have crossed the ball in? Who to? Sterling at 5ft nothing? Balotelli who never went near the box? Borini the giant?

Neither Lambert or Carroll suited us cause of pace. Benteke has pace and is able to control the ball on the deck.

We win plenty of set pieces around the box thanks to the likes of Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana. We now have an immense target. He can also hold the ball up for incoming attackers. Perfect for Firmino?

Our wingers, wing backs and corner takers now have a ball winner to aim at.

I'm more then happy we have Benteke, Origi and Ings as strike options and then Sturridge when fit. When Utd dominated they had 4 top strikers, now we will have too.

I have to agree Max. I think he's the missing piece. 4 quality striker's and 4 different kind of strikers too. We have so much creativity in the midfield and forward flanks now it's a great signing imho. No excuses now with the squad we have not to be pushing the top sides all the way 'til May. Can't wait for the season to start. I've noticed too he has not been in the Villa training pics the last few days either so he might be on his way for medical etc. Buzzing lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 15:25:47
Is it just me who thinks signing Benteke is ridiculous, and for that price, it's nearly on par with Andy Carroll as a mistake

I can't stand the idea that we need a target man who can give us another option. Rodgers clearly, if the last three years is anything to go off isn't capable of playing one. We signed Lambert last season because he would be that option. Balotelli too is very capable of holding the ball up. Considering the fact that neither did well suggests that we play a style or game that doesn't suit them.

I just don't see how that will change signing Benteke. Balotelli is still our second best striker at the club, we have still failed to sell our unwanted strikers and Benteke adds nothing more than unnecessary depth.

The way I see it is that you can look at Benteke and think we could have done worse, but most definitely I think we could have done so much better, especially with the price we're willing to pay. Disgraceful.

Thoughts?

Believable6 Unbelievable9

16 Jul 2015 15:38:31
I think its too much money for sure, but he has a lot of talent and if its possible to work on his attitude and make him work for the ball more he would be very good. I still think he would almost certainly bag 15 premiership goals minimum a season

Agree2 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 16:55:39
My opinion is that it will all depend how much playing time he gets. Considering the price tag of him and firmino I would say that BR will have more peessure to play both together. Benteke is mostly a target man and you r right in saying that both lambeth and balo are target man. I would say he must play 2 strickers and so 442 as benteke may struggle as a lone striker and at the end of the season we will all be here saying what a flop. BR has to change his tactics and play to get the best out of some players. But he will put cb alone and expect him to win us every game. I would say give players a decent number of games and then the team will gel together. IF AFTER 3 YEARS AND £250M SPENT BR STILL SAYS HE IS THE BEST AND NEED MORE TIME TO GET HIS TACTICS RIGHT how does he expect players to achieve their full potential with few minutes here and there.
442 or 352. We need 2 strikers to play together. Give balo and origi a fair chance. DO NOT LOAN OUT IBE. Give the lad his chance.
We loan players more than WONGA give out loan.
comments welcome.

The only comparison between Carroll and Benteke is transfer cost. Carroll was bought for potential, Benteke for actual production. They are not even in the same conversation in regards to being "proven". I agree that it is an over payment but only because we have turned into a value buying club (buy low and sell high). Man U, Man C, Chelsea, are throwing crazy money at players with plenty of question marks and no one bats an eye. They are in the business of spending no matter what the cost to win. If we want to be a big club again and we want players that are proven we may see more of these types of purchases especially with out (at the moment) Champions league to offer

The club are going out and paying the required amount to get the targets they want and it's disgraceful?! I feel for you eds. The club has done a great job of acquiring the targets they wanted this summer. They may have missed out on the odd one such as bacca and obviously conducted themselves poorly in their dealings with inter. Burak Yilmaz has proven season after season he's a good player at centre forward(however he's 30)

I think Aubameyang could be very handy the way we play,will be able to handle the speed of the game and likes to play with lots of space in behind,although his finishing could be improved

Kevin Gameiro could be worth taking a punt on. If given a run of games,he might find his form again.

Lewandowski is available,whereas not an option I would be thrilled by I am sure he could prove useful, he's quite versatlie in his play. I am unsure of the price and (fanstay football restriction) on this one,but he's available I believe

Jesus I'm itching for the new season to get started! I really think we have a squad capable of challenging for the top 4, I just hope it's not another false dawn.

Been mulling over Benteke as our striker and it makes more and more sense to me. Last season when we had Sterling up front on his own, opposition defenders really had very little to occupy them as he was pretty easy to mark. With Benteke, we will be a completely different animal as he will bully defenders and if he maintain a high enough work rate, he will create so much space for Firmino & Couthino to break into. Plus he can hold the ball up so the midfield can afford to push on a bit more, whereas last season, the ball was usually coming straight back at them, preventing them from pushing on.

Manchester City and Man United both look weak to me. I see no reason why we can't knock them both aside. United are weak at the back and lightweight up top, as well as having a top heavy midfield. Man City have a aging and weak defence, a very average midfield, and an inury prone striker who seems to play less games by the year but whom they won't replace because when fit he's probably the best in the world. Arsenal and Chelsea on the other hand will be too strong if you ask me. They both look very well balanced and have excellent squad depth.

I think we'll finish 3rd-5th depending on how well Firmino, Milner, Benteke and Clyne settle into the starting XI.

Thanks for the reply ed002, I think it would be important for Benteke to join the squad to integrate with players but understand how the jet lag may hinder the player. I'm guessing he may join them in Finland and away to Swindon.
Btw, our pre season games aren't exactly against quality teams. I would have thought we would have had a more competitive final pre season game!! What's your opinion on the pre season opposition?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Typically the pre-season games are a mix of commitments that are paid for by sponsors etc. (for which many clubs including LFC get well paid), pre-season tournaments which are pretty meaningless and games which clubs throw second string players at. So some practice, a chance to try out new tactics and avoidance of injury.}

16 Jul 2015 13:41:00
There is much talk on here about who we might replace in the top 4 next season. I am more worried about finishing above Spurs. We have finished behind Spurs 4 of the last 5 seasons. Is the consensus on here that we have improved our squad more than they have?

Yes De Gea staying is huge for united as without him they would never have got top 4. Any team could drop out of the top 4 next season, with the exception of Chelsea. Arsenal could be very good but still have their weaknesses in defence and up top when Sánchez isn't fit. If we add benteke then I believe we are stronger than united and city right now, although it could change before the end of the window.

You could well be right BigRed, but the only style we had last year was the style of not scoring goals ! (and plenty of crap defending of course)

16 Jul 2015 14:16:24
I would rather have had Lacazette or Reus too but they were always unlikely, and Benteke is a very good player. I'm happy if he joins to give us a proven PL scorer and a plan B to Sturridge.

I do actually think he'll be effective in a 4-3-3 with Firmino/Llalana out wide, but I'm also looking forward to seeing him in the diamond with Benteke/Sturridge just ahead of Firmino. Defenders won't know whether to drop deep and risk facing Benteke in the box, or push high and leave Sturridge space to run into!

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 15:06:27
The only thing I see that is a better scenarion in signing Benteke in comparison to signing Andy Carroll is that benteke is a better player, a better goalscorer and has tremedous upside to improve if he has the desire and the right management. A part from that, we`ll have to hope that lightning doesn`t strike twice in the same place. he is not my preferred choice but he`ll be one of us (rumours are rife that he was an LFC fan growing up in Kinshasa, Zaire or DR Congo)and we need to support him because if he flourishes, we as a club, flourish.

16 Jul 2015 15:32:54

BigRed,
If we can't get goals from Benteke then I would sack the manager. The guy has scored goals in a terrible Villa team who have nothing like the quality we have. This nonsense of not suiting our style is rubbish, our style last season was to be toothless scoring very few goals. We should play when needed to suit Benteke, UTD did it with Fellaini and they got top 4.
Let's stop this "Our style " nonsense because it didn't work too well for us last season.
I hope we get Benteke and I hope we get balls into the box so he can smash them home then let's hope the new coaching staff can teach our defenders how to defend properly then Top 4 I think will be in the bag.

Got a bit of a hammering from 'Red Kev' yesterday, slightly inappropriate calling for my head, after all it was only a suggestion. Anyways Kev, i'm sorry if I upset you and hope you sleep a bit better tonight. I mentioned Yilmaz yesterday, I didn't know what peoples thoughts were on him and I have seen Menez mentioned today. My whole point is this, what would you rather see us go for, a £30M plus million pound striker like Benteke who by all accounts is a large gamble at that price or would you rather see a more experienced player added to the ranks at a considerably lower cost but has pedigree at the highest level scoring goals. If we are to bring in somebody like Beneteke, my previous post was simply stating that it shows we have no intent on giving players like Yesil or Sinclair a opportunity in the coming years. I think they should now be considered and tested at the highest level otherwise we will never know if they had the ability or not.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 12:01:00
I get what you mean mate.

I guess the gamble works both ways - Benteke's price is so high because Villa took the gamble on him working in the EPL, and he has proved that.

The flip side is someone like Menez is cheaper - 1/3 of the price if reports are to be believed - but unproven in the prem.

Are the names we are being linked to more like Suarez and Torres - able to hit the ground running - or more like Aspas or Morientes - great in Europe but not able to adjust to the pace or power of the Prem?

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 12:21:53
Our aim as a club is not to know if Yesil or Sinclair have the ability or not, but to try and win trophies. If we learned anything from what happend in recent years in the EPL it is that the top players, who are usualy very expensive, are those who make the difference between being successful and not. Suarez, Aguero, Costa, Sanchez, Hazard. Getting somewhere with young unproven talent in the EPL may have worked in the early 1990s, not today.

Whether Benteke is the answer or not is a different argument (no one argue he is in the level of the above names although he is still a very good striker). No one will complaine here if we bring Lacazette instead. But the point is if we are not willing to spend big on big players we will get nowhere.

Big clubs now send their young talent on loan. If they impress, they can come back to the team like Ibe did. But not to bring a top striker in order to give Yesil a chance will bring us nowhere.

Agree2 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 12:22:21
You are right mate regarding youth players.But considering Rodgers situation I don't think he will gamble regarding a striker.Benteke is proven and experienced player in premier league.Okay actually proven and experienced mean nothing considering our previous signings.Still Rodgers prefers him.And Yilmaz is a bad suggestion,he is not that great wheras Menez is a sensible option.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 12:11:02
No issue in bringing in the likes of Benteke as you would assume he would be a starter. Why the need for the other 2 ( Ings and origi) as they are the ones that are really preventing the youth as they are taking the slots on the bench- the starting point for the younger players.

Agree3 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 12:33:24
Finally got to agree with Swisch in the context of buying just for the sake of buying.
Benteke if arrives would be a starter so do sturridge.
Ings and Origi has cost us close to 20 mill.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 12:47:33
You see, there is a point. The Suarez and Torres kind of signings, ones which are more high profile & top players at that rather than 5 or 6 'stocking fillers' makes more sense, then you blood the younger lads through. Example, why buy Markovic when we had Ibe? Why buy Toure when we had Ilori, why buy Ings when we have Sinclair. i'm not hammering the players we bought because they aren't good enough but surely it makes more financial sense to work a club like this. You can take a look at Teixera as another example, a player with huge potential which we will likely never see in a Liverpool shirt. Just a shame that's all.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 13:15:29
Swish is right. We need to focus on improving the first 11 or first sixteen players in the squad then use our youth or fringe players who can contribute, to make up the numbers. What we are doing is buying fringe players for large sums (as EG has said)while our youth are pegged back even more in the pecking order. This is not sensible business and good squad management. This is the "kid in a candy store" mentality in the TW which has made our squad big YET severely unbalanced. Must do better!

Agree1 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 17:40:00
If we can manage to offload the two Italians we are left with a decent and manageable compliment of forwards/strikers.
It's a big "if" but we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Personally, I suspect we'll sell Borini (at a loss) and loan out Balotelli with an agreement to share his wage commitment. Just a hunch.
If this happens we'll be looking at Sturridge, Benteke, Origi and Ings as the main ones, with Firminho as a back-up option and whatever youngsters can come through. Not too shabby, eh?
Considering the amount of games, Danny's sick-record and the "plan B" option off the bench we will probably utilise them all to the max.
With the additional firepower and creativity we've recently invested in I wouldn't be too pessimistic about our potency up front. Benteke and Origi will provide a dimension we lacked last season. We were incredibly poor at corners/set-pieces.
If we can't find a club for Balo we'll have another option to use but I can't see him setting the world alight or even getting much of a chance. If we can't offload either of the Italians we'll have one of the most expensive forward-lines in the world to stifle our youth. If I ran a branch of Sainsbury's (med-high level supermarket) and filled it full of caviar, truffles and mink coats whilst keeping the more useful stuff in the back I'd probably be sacked when they didn't appeal to the masses.
I've left Ricky Lambert alone because, even though he's probably surplus, he's been a model professional and a useful but under-used back-up option. If he stays we'll have more attackers than ISIS !

Would love it if the interest in Menez is true. He is a very skillful and hard working forward who creates as much as he scores. A front 3 of Firmino, Menez and Coutinho would be devastating. I'd put them down to get at least 40-50 goals between them.

Sadly I think it's a manufactured story. The movement that front 3 would offer would just be impossible to deal with though.

One thing I would say though, Menez is not a 20 goal a season striker. He scored 16 last year which looks good on the face of it but 8 of them were from the spot. Having said that though, I'd say we're in need if a new penalty taker with Gerrard leaving.

I think he's a perfect fit myself.

EMS.

We did try last season with Countinho, lallana and Sterling uptop, Linking and interchanging.
All they did was to pass and make the crowd look WOW, We did not score goals and for that you need an out and out striker.

Menez is very much similar to Countinho and Firmino.
We should leave the creativity to them and need a physical presence inside the 6 yard box to put the ball back in the net.

There is no another Suarez out there. eEither its a typical creator or a CF.

Agree4 Disagree2

16 Jul 2015 10:23:22
Menez started playing regularly as a stiker last season at Milan,before he played as a winger.So his goalscoring exploits are decent.I would be happy if the club actually considers him.
He fits our style of play.And Since Milan are buying stikers I think we can bring him,if we lose our primary target.But again he scored in patches and he has some attitude issues,so it can be a gamble.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 10:50:26
EMS actually in those 8 penalties 5 were given for the fouls made on him.So he could have scored 13 goals from open play.Anyways the major thing is he has everything in his arsenal skills,movement,passing,dribbling,finishing from both his feet.Just he was not consistent and I didn't watch Serie A regularly to know the exact reason.If anyone has any idea,it would be great for them to give their opinion.Also Eds what is your opinion?

Thanks.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 10:53:05
EG, the biggest problem we had last season was that Sterling and Coutinho both drop deeper to run at people and that Sterling can't shoot. Lallana was also injured too frequently to get into any rhythm. So we had nobody regularly looking to run in behind or get into the box. Firmino and Menez are both far more suited to playing in a front 3 than Sterling though. They both look to get into the box all the time.

As Indian Scouser says, Menez did actually play as an out and out striker last season anyway and it was arguably the best season of his career.

Those 3 players to me look very similar in style to the Barcelona front 3; albeit with less quality. You have the hardworking power in Firmino (Suarez), the blistering pace and skill of Menez (Messi) and the skill and flair of Coutinho (Neymar). Like I say, it's certainly not as good as Barca's frontline in terms of quality, but style wise the evidence is there that an interchangeable front 3 can be devastating to play against.

16 Jul 2015 10:25:22

Agree1 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 10:37:51
What is the point of Liverpool wasting money buying another striker if he's not a major improvement on what we already have? Benteke is a very good, proven premier league striker. If we cannot get a striker in Benteke's bracket OR better I'd say don't buy and give Ings/Origi/Firmino the vote of confidence.

Agree2 Disagree5

16 Jul 2015 11:07:16
Remember what happened with the last striker from Milan with a good goal scoring record that we bought? :)

I don't think Menez is what we need. I would like a simple out and out 20+ goal a season striker who doesn't want to go near the wing.

I am always wary of buying from Italy.

Agree3 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 11:25:40

Exactly why we need a top class CM behind Countinhom and Firmino, Else both would drop deep to pick the player and often gets marked out.

A passing midfielder would psuh the attacers upfront and we would have mobility in the front three, All we need is a presence inside the 6 yard box and Benteke is all about it.

Beneteke could also shoot from way outside 30 yards with ease.

Menez is very much similar to Firmono and would block the way of Firmino and Countinho when they move forward.

We need someone inside the box and that's where Benteke comes into the picture.

Exactly the prblem at Arsenal they have abundance of Artist who could create, But no player to put the ball in the back of net.

Agree0 Disagree3

16 Jul 2015 12:02:38
Bobatron Balotelli is a different class.Menez is completely different from Balotelli in terms of playing style.

Menez is a striker whereas Firmino excels in Second stiker or midfield positions.We already have plenty of passing midfielders like
Hendo,Milner,Coutinho,Teixeira,Lallana.What we lacked was a striker who could create space for others to exploit and who could stretch the defence and exploit the space behind defence by making runs.Hence signing Menez will make sense.Arsenal felt the importance of CDM and GK.In striking department they need another one so that they cannot solely depend on Giroud.

I'll repeat this once and once only EG.

Menez now plays as an out and out striker! Firmino isn't even close to a similar player. He is all about craft and clever movement. Menez is more about pace, skill etc. He's incredibly direct and always attacks the penalty area. You seem to be recalling the Menez of AS Roma. He is a different player now.

Spot on, EG. Menez will not get you the goals you need to compete for the top 4. Kane scored a hatful YET Tottenham only finished in fifth so what will Menez who`s never been a striker, give you?. In fact, He only started playing the position last season after playing out wide for years with Monaco, Roma and PSG. We have enuff players of his ilk. We need a striker who can finish the multitude of chances we create and if Benteke is the guy (per the Daily Mail, we will activate his release clause any day now) then let`s go for him and forget all these other names who won`t improve us that much. Oh and by the way, we still have Studge to return.

Morning Reds and Eds

I'm just going to get straight to my point.

I totally understand when Ed002 says Liverpool have the worst fans in the world!

Why abuse Sterlings partner (who has nothing to do with football) and why be racist?!

So quick to use the N word!

So, should Sturridge, Sahko, Ibe, Toure, Wisdom, Sinclair, Ojo- just leave then? Are they going to be called n*gg**s when the going gets tough?! Are they and their families going to get abuse?!

I'm totally disgusted to be honest. It's hard enough dealing with racism on a normal basis (yes it does still exist unfortunately).

Did no one learn from the Suarez/Evra situation?!

People have asked me a few times how I can still support Liverpool after that situation and my answer is always something like- " I love my club very much" & "we are not a racist club".

To quite a few opposing fans we are starting to look like that sort of club which really pi**es me off!

I think we saw from the Alves banana incident that more people.
tweeted about Alves response to racism and how it needed kicking out than agreed throwing a banana was ok. Do I now think all villareal fans are the worst fans in La liga? and that evertytime Bertran Baily goes on the field it's to chrosues of racist chanting and he should leave the club. no

If someone is a horrible, nasty bigot then that's what they are regardless of the football team they support, the religion they follow, or the colour of their skin.

You see this is the fundamental problem with social media. In a society that endorses free speech you are unfortunately giving the morons within society a forum to vent their sorry feelings.

Biggest problem about dealing with racism is many people still deny how big the problem still is in Britain.

Most racism is not about skinheads shouting abuse or attacking people, it's the other more subtle things; not getting that jobs or promotion, your kids into the the best schools, turning up to rent a house, then finding out all of a sudden it's "gone", being harassed by the police, etc.etc.

You see it in football, the lack of people of color in Management or refereeing.

We have no hope of getting rid of the trolls if we don't deal with the institutional racism first.

Let them vent Wassa. Just like the BNP if you let them try to rationalise their idiocy it highlights how stupid their ideas are.

Hence in a society of free dpeech, we have the right to call out the morons as well for their dire remarks

Eds, has a transfer ever happened where you guys just heard nothing about until it was announced? Liverpool or otherwise?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, of course it has. I wish I was omnipotent, but unfortunately not. So long as it is announced before the paperwork is submitted to the relevant FAs it is very possible for clubs to do their business quietly. The problem is that they are usually dealing with agents who want to tip the wink to other potential buyers to get a better deal for their client.}

16 Jul 2015 08:21:25
Thr news explode the moment a club talks to the agents.

Agree1 Disagree2

16 Jul 2015 09:29:33
What's the biggest one you didn't hear about liverpool related?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - there are so many mate, it is difficult to remember them. I have been doing this 14 years now, things merge into one after a while.}

16 Jul 2015 10:13:16
Was it Aspas who came completely out of the blue two summers ago? There was definitely one either last summer or the summer before.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I honestly can't remember, this is when I wish I kept a database to help. Trouble is I once got hacked and some of the stuff had info that was not for sharing, so, even though it was not hacked for any more than someone being an arse, I just don't feel safe keeping info where it can be found. I have taken to deleting texts and emails as soon as I have read them if they have anything in them that is sensitive. Which is a problem as footballers are such knobs there is almost always something about their misbehaviour in every message these days.}

16 Jul 2015 10:49:12
I seem to the remember the assaidi transfer coming from knowhere

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes that one did defo catch me out.}

Assaidi was the one who came completely out of nowhere. Literally the first time anybody heard his name mentioned with regards to LFC was the morning the club website officially confirmed it.

ed001 get an air gapped small laptop when you get some free funds,never connect it to the internet.So your data can't be stolen. A notebook costs £200 can be password protected. If you're wanting to keep a database of texts you receive etc.

16 Jul 2015 16:33:27
A simple Excel file sounds good, easy to list, easy to add notes in columns, easy to find what you want. Unfortunately there are people out there stealing anything they can.

And Assaidi, spot on lads that's who I meant too - couldn't think of him and mixed it up with Aspas but 1 million percent I meant Assaidi as well.

Morning Eds. You can't tell what someone else is thinking, but after seeing Origi up close in action, could you see us hold off on Benteke or anyone and have the answer already. He looked a lot stronger and built then I remember so to me looks prem ready. Has the right attitude by his interviews.

Also Teixeria. With the new coaches on board as well, who have been noted for their work with youth, can you see his chances stronger going on his performance?

I'm grounded that it's a preseason game, Thai XI etc, but they looked good and think they deserve their chances. Would you expect Rodgers has been nudged towards using the youth we have following his 'meeting'

Thanks

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - nothing is judged on an game that is purely about fitness. Rodgers was nudged towards youth in January. Ibe's return was a part of that.}

16 Jul 2015 08:23:00
Our first match is at Stoke without Sturridge, I would rather a class striker upfront than anyone.
We simply cannot drop points yet again with excuses. We have enough time to get the business done.

Agree2 Disagree2

16 Jul 2015 08:37:30
Who nudged him Ed do you know,because the owners don't know enough about football in my opinion to be able to do it.And they sacked his number 2 and head coach so I don't expect they had any input because most on here say they were just yes men

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it was one of the owners. Should be fairly obvious which one.}

16 Jul 2015 13:28:36
They`re not yes men when it comes to messing with their money, that much is true.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 07:26:51
We should let the mancs buy Benteke for 32 million, and concentrate on someone better and a bit cheaper surely there is some decent strikers out there, come on scouts earn your crust.

Believable1 Unbelievable5

16 Jul 2015 08:24:33
Strange is, the lib got knocked out by Bacca who is a lot cheaper to Benteke, how would we negotiate with Villa?

Agree0 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 09:03:12
Should we pay 32 mill for a player who is not worth the money even in today's market, it should be 25 mill at the very most because if he's a flop everybody would be kicking off and like Balotelli would be hard to get shut of.
I just think it's a big gamble paying all that money when we've wasted so much lately and Benteke has been inconsistent in the past.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 04:31:31
Eds, Lots of talk about United seemingly taking the initiative with Benteke, and now looking more likely to complete a deal ? Two questions, do you believe he is better suited to their style of play, and if we miss out, is Rondon the most likely option, as I would personally go for Vela. Appreciate any feedback.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no, he doesn't suit them either and yes, though I would rather have Vela too.}

16 Jul 2015 06:15:30
Benteke would never suit UTD nor Liverpool. After buying Schniderline and Bastain, they would shedd the long balls, moreover they have Fellaini for plan b
I expect a bigger name to go to UTD. Leweondaski might be.

Agree1 Disagree5

16 Jul 2015 06:26:04
Vela is very much similar to Firmino. We need an out and out striker.

Agree5 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 08:17:27
Lacazette would be absolutely perfect for the way we play,

Manager also just came out and said if a club bids between 35 and 42 million then I have to let him go and wish him luck

Agree5 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 08:38:58
You got two choice.

1. One who press high up pitch and make our play beautiful just like Arsenal ( always trying to score that near perfect goal )

2. Buy someone who would just score like it or not how he plays.

16 Jul 2015 09:16:15
Painful to agree with u Harry but is true. Look at kane nothing glamorous just puts the ball in the net

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 09:38:32
Thats exactly the club is after Benteke. At the end of the day league table is what matters most. Given we get a top class Midfeilder There is enough Mobility in the team.

Benteke given 90 mts on the pitch is sure certain to score one without a doubt. If he could draw couple of defenders out with his physicality, We could see other chipping with goals.

But My question remains, How is he better to balotelli? What is that Balotelli couldn't and Benteke has been doing for villa?. If they are much similar, would he succed at Villa?

Question for Ed001, who would you rather as second keeper Valdes or bogdan?

Also I assume given the choice you would say none. So who realistically would you have signed to push mignolet for the no1 spot?

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I would have signed Begovic to be number one.}

16 Jul 2015 06:15:52

I've read we've tabled a €65M/£45M (€15M more than Real Madrid) bid for Reus and Dortmund have told Madrid to match our price before they allow Reus to talk to them. Is there any truth in this or is it just clickb ate (newspaper gets money for every click onto their website) for the newspapers?

Believable2 Unbelievable14

{Ed002's Note - Exciting times ahead.}

16 Jul 2015 05:27:16
Don't forget Messi and Ronaldo to have their medicals this week done and dusted.

Agree6 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 09:37:39
And matching our price would be so much better for Dortmund as then they would get the same amount and Reus would go to a bigger potential rival.

Makes so much sense, oh no wait it's a load of tosh.

Have Liverpool ever thought about making a move for Dwight Gale at crystal palace? Still young and has put in some fine performances against us!

Believable1 Unbelievable12

{Ed002's Note - You need the Dwight Gale page for this.}

16 Jul 2015 00:43:37
Dwight Gayle* isn't even a nailed on starter for Palace, he is no better than the options we have and I'd much rather use Sinclair (I hope he stays).

Given the treatment Borini/Balo/Lambert/Aspas have had and their previous goalscoring records compared to Gayle he wouldn't get a game.

Agree6 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 09:39:30
I'd go a little further than lmred, I think Gayle is actually available for sale, not because they think he's worth so much they want to cash in, just for sale as he's not as good as they want.

People need to stop judging players on just playing well against us twice a year.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 09:58:18
Might be worth signing just so he can't take points off you next year to be honest.
