My parents bought me a Liverpool shirt when I was about 7. Don't know why as neither follow football or Liverpool. I wore my shirt with pride without being massively interested. When I was 13 I went to Anfield for my first match (VS Arsenal, Perfect Fowler hat trick after falling 1-0 down gave Liverpool a 3-1 win and I was sold. Never looked back and my passion for the reds has grown continuously.

Wish everyone the best for the new season. Can't wait! Thanks eds for all your hard work and thanks to all the posters who offer opinions. Harry - your new found politeness is scaring me. EMS - always enjoy reading your posts!

Cheers!

My story starts with my dad, he's a big pool fan born on penny lane and was a bus driver in litherland where he met my mum. It was later when I was about 6 when we watched the 86 cup final I got hooked! In later years dad use to take me to anfield and lucky enough one day we met a very young Robbie Fowler and Ray Houghton out side our beloved ground. . that was it for me! I actually get emotional when it comes to Liverpool football club I really am lucky and proud to call myself a red! Cheers dad.

Why are people insisting on linking Bony with Liverpool. James Pearce has already said they're very unlikely to go back in for him.

Believable1 Unbelievable5

I have just read the same thing in echo pal.
Makes you wonder who Rogers has in mind as a striker then.

How did I become a red?
Quite simply I was born,
From a kid in the boys pen bunking into the Kop to getting the bus at 9am to be the first on the kop
Queuing up for 6 hours for a 3 o'clock Saturday kick off
Got to get to my barrier first before someone else after all it's my barrier I own it
Then to st.etiene where I was finally christened a red
Could reminisce all night
This is are year come on you reds

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Similar to you red wine first game I remember was 1971 FA cup but first game I went to was 1974 v Derby in the paddock. I also moved onto the boys pen and bunked into the KOP many times and remember going straight to Anfield after school to the St Etienne game and managed to get in before the gates shut with thousands locked outside. My best memories though were 1986 away at Chelsea and FA cup final to win the double and also a week in turkey in 2005 at the final. Worst day 15th may 1989 leppings lane section B.

I think you've got about 39 minutes at the time of typing this.

P.S this is the official website of the Premier League's fantasy football, not the *** one, as previously there was a confusion

Eds fellow reds .is there any truth in Alex song from barca, if so out of the 8 /9 players signed 6 of them will be midfielders .

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Um, ''is there any truth in Alex song from barca, if so out of the 8/9 players signed 6 of them will be midfielders''? Let's have a look.

Lambert and Origi are strikers.
Lallana and Markovic are attacking midfielders/wingers.
Can is a central midfielder/box2box.
Manquillo and Moreno are both full backs/wing backs.
Lovren is a CB.

If we signed Alex Song from Barcelona, that would make 4 midfielder signings : Can, Song, Lallana and Markovic.

But they are not all central midfielders, I have a feeling Markovic will be played in a front three more than as a 'winger' in the classic sense. Also, I don't think Rodgers has signed Lallana to stand in the middle of the pitch either, but even if they are 'midfielders' where do you get 6 midfielders from mate?

Agree2 Disagree0

6 of them? Guess you're counting markovic, although is call him a winger, but the only ones who are central midfielders like song are lallana and can? Plus lallana is a playmaker and can can do both roles, I'm guessing song would be a holding midfielder replacing Lucas?

Hi Ed's,

I was just wondering, in regards to the Manquillo loan, assuming we decide to sign him permanently for the agreed fee (£5 million apparently), can Atletico still reject that pre-agreed fee and opt to take him back, or would they have to accept it?

Thanks in advance, guys.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think I remember reading somewhere they have a buy back option, though i'm not 100% sure if this is true.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think they have to accept it, that's the point of a loan to buy right? Otherwise why bother putting down a potential fee at all.

I read they apparently have a buy back clause though within a certain time period. Not entirely sure how accurate it is.

Just read Divock Origi scored a 69th/70th minute penalty to give Lille the three points against Caen.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

I think he won the pen as well, I might be wrong.

Agree6 Disagree0

He did. Although looked like it shouldn't have been a penalty, honestly.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Aug 2014 08:49:42
It was definitely not a penalty. But in Origi's favor, he neither appealed for it nor was withering on the floor when the challenge was made.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2014 21:23:39
Origi came off injured in the 88th minute after scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. Hopefully not too serious

Does anyone else think if we had Bergovic last season we would have topped league?

Believable2 Unbelievable11

I understand what your saying but in my opinion its a team game, he could have made some mistakes where Mingolet wouldn't of have. Its hard to say really. :)

How did I become a red?
It was 1978 I was 10 years old and my life in deepest Cornwall revolved around 3 things. Hunting/shooting, fishing and rowing
I'd never been to a football match and never kicked a ball.
Arrived at junior school one Monday morning only to have my mate, Dave Clarke, say "Liverpool did well Saturday didn't they? You are a Liverpool fan aren't you?"
What else could I say other than
"Yeah of course I am, and weren't they good Saturday!"
I got home that day and said to my dad (who had zero interest in football) "are Liverpool any good dad? I think I may support them" to which he replied with a chuckle "yeah they're ok son, you won't go wrong with them"
Over the next few years I read and watched anything I could get my hands on that had anything to do with the club and although I had no links to Liverpool at all I was consumed by the club and what it stood for.
So, in short, a glory hunter I suppose but a true and loyal supporter none the less

Ballotelli on loan might be good but for me it depends on cost. Are we taking him on loan with an option to buy or is it that our primary target is not available. Of course it could be a loan until Origi arrives next summer.

Hello Eds,

Song available for 8m, but so also is Sami Khedira(according to rumours). Though Khedira's wage demands would be higher, I would still prefer him to Song. Khedira & Hendo pressing in front of Stevie would give the back four rest & adequate protection IMO.
I might be a lil bit of Oliver Twist here, but why can't we go for & close the Marco Reus deal. Looks like BVB wouldn't mind negotiating. I know some fans want Bony, but in a way, I feel his signing wouldn't give the fluid movement in the final third that we would've gotten with Remy or would get with Reus.

Thanks.

Believable4 Unbelievable5

Khedira will be more expensive than that no doubt! Song and rues would be dreaming I think mate!

Agree2 Disagree0

You had me with Khedeira. Far better player than Song. The fact you think Remy is more fluid than Bony is ridiculous though. Remy is completely one dimensional; hit it over the top and I'll chase it. Bony is far superior in every department excliding pace.

Agree3 Disagree0

Reus has a release clause no? One of the Bayern staff revealed it which annoyed Dortmund. I assume if anyone wanted Reus they would know exactly how much it would cost.

RE LOAN SYSTEM

The whole loan system has been bugging me now for a while, especially for the "big clubs" Let me try to explain. Clubs send players out on loan "to get regular first team football" with a view to coming back a better more experienced player, however what it actually means is the club saying we don't want you any more, go and put yourself in the shop window. Has there been any recent player at LFC that has been loaned out and returned and gone on to make a career at the club? can't think of many! From the players point of view do you think they know this or they genuinely believe they will go out on loan, play well and come back to play for us?

Believable2 Unbelievable3

The worse bit and anti sportivic one is that they cannot play agains their club.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Aug 2014 20:39:33
Well actually loans are often used to remove a persons wages from the wage bill eg Reina. Also they are used by buying clubs to see if a player is good enough and are loans with an option to buy eg Manquillo, Cissokho. As with Cissokho, aren't you delighted we got him on loan rather than a permanent deal?

Agree3 Disagree0

15 Aug 2014 20:39:50
I think it depends on the age of the player and the role within the club to be honest . It's a tricky one with many variables

Seeing as there's a few posts going around about how they start supporting Liverpool I thought I'd share mine. I grew up in London (now live in leeds) and for whatever reason Fowler was my idol, from putting tape on my nose to wearing fowler shirts . So obviously began to watch Liverpool games and I was hooked, and ever since then I have never looked back. I get the usual 'support your local team' but I just couldn't imagine supporting another team. There's something special about the club that I find unexplainable!

Hi Guyz. May I just I love hanging with u guyz. Was going crazy without regularly footy and the world cup cldnt help. Anyways been a Red since the days of Grobelaar. He got me into Liverpool also John Barnes wasnt far off as well. Followed ever since then. My instabul experience is slightly different. I didn't watch the match, was a nervous wreck and was still in varsity those days. Everyon e knew I was a red. Went to my girlfriend for the evening. Kept hearing shouts of joy. AC scoring 1,2,3 by half time cldnt take it. Went home and as I'm walking I hear another shout. And I knew it was back on. Ran to the TV room. Cldnt watch by myself. Watched the comeback it was glorious. I could tell the boyz were up for it at 3-1 and I kept shouting we can do it.just watch. Needless to say, we won. My worst fear had been lived out in the 1 st half. But the boys did us proud. All those gooners and mancs who had predicted our downfall were crestfallen.
Blah blah blah epic night

Hi to all the EDS and fellow REDS

on the question of how you became a red:

1971 FA cup final, Arsenal v Liverpool, I was a 15 year old in a Boarding school in the south of England, full to the brim with Arsenal fans. Seeing all the bias support for Arsenal (Teachers and Staff included), shouting and cheering even a throw-in, I, sadistically, began supporting Liverpool, not outwardly though, just in my heart, I was foreign, not stupid!
Then Heighway scored and my heart was soaring, seeing everyone quieten down. I really enjoyed the few minutes they were down in the dumps. Then when Graham scored that dodgy lucky equalizer the room went mental, naturally. Up to that point I had pretended I was a neutral fan but just couldn't help shouting my true feelings to the room. Needless to say when Charlie George scored the winner I suffered the humiliation of everyone jumping on my head and calling me Persian Scouser (I didn't even know what scouser means!) Anyway, although Liverpool lost, the way Liverpool played, the way Clemence dived and failed to save the winning goal. it all went towards making me a Liverpool fan. As I'm sure is the case with all of us, it was just meant to be!
And I have loved every minute of it, the downs the ups, the celebrations and the sad sad tragedies.
When I lived in Birmingham me a four other friends were season ticket holders for 7 years but then I had to move to London and only come up for the occasional match. my family live in London but my football heart and soul is at Anfield, my beloved Liverpool, the best club in the world.
YNWA, my brothers and sisters.

2) Song possibly on his way with Lucas going to Napoli
3) Bony signs next week after scoring 2 goals on Sat to give Swansea 3 points at Old Trafford

Bonza way to end the summer transfer window I reckon :-)

Rodgers saying on that most likely just 1 more signing after moreno

Believable1 Unbelievable7

You sure:

“I’m really happy with the players we’ve brought in because that’s going to allow us to cope with injuries and cope with the competitions.

“And, as I said, if we can add one or two more in the areas that we want to then we’ll have had a great window and it will set us up not only for this window."

Fencey he said this in his press conference today, also I believe he is including Moreno as a done deal because of his comments regarding Moreno being somewhere along the lines of it's all but confirmed.

Also Rodgers says "1 or 2 more" a lot, it's his way of trying to give as little information on transfers as possible. He said in January he expected "1 or 2" signings lol, I believe he even mentioned it in one of his first press conferences.

I'm afraid you must be getting me confused with someone else as I have only just registered on the site to respond to bob's comments earlier (having been alerted by his mother).

Robert may have used my name before as I am connected to a number of football clubs through my profession, but I have never been in the possession of any transfer information that is not public knowledge so I doubt I could help with the site.

"Please trust me, I can't tell you everything because it's not fair on everybody. It's not that Borini doesn't want to come. I have talked to him and things are clear, but it's a matter of doing it at the right time."

Sounds like maybe Liverpool are holding up the transfer til a new striker comes in?

Believable10 Unbelievable1

I don't like it when managers say stuff like this, its a bit sly, makes us look bad and forces us to respond

Sounds just as likely that Poyet doesn't want to pay his wages whilst he recovers from an injury.

Here's my question: If Rickie scores on Sunday what should he do? Does he celebrate like crazy because its his first Anfield and Liverpool goal or does he show respect to a club that has supported him for 5 yrs. I just care for the win but it would be interesting to see what you guys think.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I think he'd walk off out his hands up tk the saints fans, then fist pump due to pure emotion!

He should show respect to southampton but acknowledge the Liverpool support, just like every other proffessional has done and will do unless they are already on bad terms a la adebayor

Not celebrate; then hand in the air to acknowledge the Liverpool supporters.

Well everybody was sharing their stories of how they got into Liverpool thought I'd share mine

I live in India and football wasn't a big thing here 5-6 years ago (actually it was hardly a thing) and I was an ardent cricket fan at that time
During south Africa 10 my dad urged me to start watching some football and I obliged don't know why but I really liked the name "Fernando Torres" he hardly played but I really liked his name
and became a torres "fan"
So I started watching Liverpool to see Fernando I wasn't really a red in those days in fact I wouldn't watch if torres didn't play
then came January and judas left us
I was very close to start supporting chelsea then but fortunately something made me stick with Liverpool
And when under Kenny we thrashed Mancs 3-0 (kuyt hat trick) I completely became a red
Obviously by then I had developed a strong dislike for torres
Those years of hardship where all my friends supported man u because they were winning I stuck
I am really excited about this season as it will the first time I see Liverpool play in the Champions League
Greatest Regret of my Life -Missing Istanbul
In these last four years I just fell in love with the club and it became a part of me like a religion
so much so that if Liverpool lose I'm down for the whole weekend

Reds onwards and Upwards

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Have you managed to sit down and watch Istanbul yet? still an amazing game to watch, having seen it live adds to the emotion of rewatching it but i'm sure youd find it as great nevertheless

Agree4 Disagree0

15 Aug 2014 17:05:56
i too was in a similar situation, where all my friends were supporting man u just because they were winning . But the best part was in my 5th class and experienced that holy night were all my
fantasies of a team made by heaven came true . From then on being a red is part of my constitution. And finally in INDIA all the lfc fans are true fans were as the same cannot be said of man u fans.

My dad got me hooked on Liverpool . most of my family are born into it although we live in dublin, I've been to a lot of games but the biggest I went to was the istanbul final, I went with a mate, flew in that morning with whartons travel and flew out 20 hrs after the match after massive delays at our airport, will never ever forget that day .

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah, 2005!, who will ever forget it. The greatest comeback ever.
At halftime, I was as drunk as piglet, and sick of the constant "jeers and comments" of the Man U fans around me, I picked up the phone and called my local bookie (had 4K on credit with him), said what odds Liverpool to win it outright. much laughter later (he too was a Man U fan), he said 25-1, but I will give a stretch, and got 33-1, bet the lot. the rest is history!.

Sadly 2007 was not the same.

Seeing Irishkopites thread a bit further down the page has made me wonder whether any player has ever moved to 2 different clubs in the same transfer window?

Anyone know?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Didn't someone sign for Anzhi recently and got sold a few days later?

Hamann Liverpool to bolton too man city
And
Obi mikel

Didi Hamann moved from us to bolton and then to city.

It usually only happens with transfers that have already been agreed and then there's a change in management. It's very rare though

Loads. armero this window (udinese and milan), iturbe (verona and roma), last summer kokorin and denisov (anzhi and dinamo moscow). that's just off the top of my head

In January 2007 Odense bought a Serbian keeper, Nenad Novakovic from another Danish club for 600K and sold him to Reggina for 1.4M on the 31st of January.

Agree0 Disagree0

Most obvious ones are players bought and then farmed out on loan. Such as Chelsea's Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtios. Moving from Genk and going to Chelsea in 2011 to sign the papers, medical and the photo shoot and then leaving for Atletico Madrid on loan a few weeks later. Might be wrong but that one springs to mind.

I remember years ago Regi Blinker signed for Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic (i think) at the same time. That was before the windows were introduced but anything from the 90's is kinda bleached around the edges and grey in the middle for me. Not sure if it was Benito Carbone who did a similar thing in his career? Vaguely remember something.

Didi Hamann? Signed for Bolton from Liverpool for a nominal fee and then changed his mind and went to City I think

More than I thought! Although I guess it only really counts for permanent moves as there will be loads of young players coming in and then being loaned out, we've done it recently with Origi and it's what Chelsea do on a very regular basis!

Interestingly, Didi didn't (did you see what I did there?!) actually sign for Bolton as per Phil Gartside officially as the paperwork was never completed. They were compensated by Man City tho, so I guess it counts

Agree0 Disagree0

Man City weren't happy with what Gartside said and asked the League to investigate. They did, and found all the paperwork was correct so Bolton were ok. Otherwise it should have been a free, but Bolton ended up with a quick, small profit on Didi

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't believe people are forgetting Borini! signed for Parma from Chelsea I think who then loaned him to Roma for a season who then purchased the rest of him the following year only to sell him to Liverpool that summer.

Hi Ozone, thanks for the comments mate, much appreciated. .Yip, us "left wingers" have to stick together. .offer some balance, insight, perspective, and a reality check.

Maybe we can be the new 'STRIKERS' for LFC, as the team seem to be very short in this regard (response to a suggestion made).

I had quite a chuckle reading some of the responses, some were quite comical indeed, certainly some do not read the posts (you guys know who you are).
It took the human race 2000 years plus to figure out that the sun did not revolve around the earth.
Sadly it may take as long for 'certain supporters and FSG/BR disciples" to figure out the same.
Cheers, take care.

Believable3 Unbelievable14

The only plausible explanation for this kind of post is that you are hoping for a reaction, so you can sit there with a grin on your face whilst counting the number of replies, feeling satisfied that you have achieved something in your sad life.

Ed, these are the kind of posts that should be sent to the other page.

Redpumkin, please. Heliocentrism, the notion that the Earth revolves around the Sun had been proposed as early as the 3rd century BCE by Aristarchus of Samos.

It took Human's some 200,000 years to figure this out, according the fossil dates given for atomically modern homo sapiens at the Ethiopian river Omo.

But it wasn't until the 16th century that a fully predictive mathematical model of Heliocentrism was presented by Copernicus, leading to the Copernican Revolution. I guess this is why the Ed's don't like discussing the numbers. :D

The Ancient greeks were actually well aware that the earth revolved around the sun.

{Ed002's Note - LFC cannot talk to players without the permission of a player's club - and that normally means a deal has been agreed in principle. So at this time, I don't think so.}

{Ed002's Note - That is called tapping up and is illegal within the game. Maybe Bobatron's uncle could do that for Liverpool.}

15 Aug 2014 14:20:33
Isn't that Agents are for? Checking the availability of players ( Even though its the wrong way )

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't say talk to the player first - tell the selling club first you are interested, but you suggest the clubs can then go and have two months of fee negotiations and in theory all that time no one is asking the player if he is interested (or at least willing) at all, and then, after they agree a fee, the player say actually I am not going there, hate this country or whatever? Isn't the selling club at least have a duty to tell the player that there has been an offer in case he is not interested so save the megotiation time (they can sometimes try and force him to but still would like to know his view, no?) and really no one from the buying club wll give an informal call to the agent at some point just to check they are not wasiting their time and he may be interested (and wages demands)? Seem a very inefficient way to do things

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You are just making all of this stuff up.}

Alanhuyton,

Istanbul got me and my dad hooked! He had grown up in the late 60's and early 70's as a Leeds fan but lost interest in following the sport when he joined the army. By the time he'd left he was in his late twenties and his sport was fishing. He literally had no interest in football. My first kit (apologises) was actually a Chelsea kit (although to this day I don't know which sicko bought me it). When I was 8 though, I got dropped from my local academy and being a stubborn little so and so I sacked it in altogether to go and do karate! By the time I was 10/11 though I was missing the football so I went back to the game and idolised a certain Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen after watching them at Euro 2004. Anyway, on this fateful day I noticed that Liverpool were playing that night and knew from school that Gerrard played for them. I asked my dad if I could stay up to watch and he decided to make a thing of it and go get in the beers (or shandys in my case)!

For some strange reason I was drawn to Liverpool. Even after watching them get annihilated for 45 minutes I just felt a pull. When I heard the fans at half time I got goosebumps. I can't explain it, but now I know the feeling was that of a deep love growing for Liverpool. When Xabi knocked in the rebound for that equaliser I was over joyed! I didn't even understand why at the time! The rest is history.

So yeah, it was quite a first game to watch, but I spent the next 9 years up to present day religiously following Liverpool, blowing all my money on Liverpool merchandise and watching reels of footage of the 2001 treble and the great Dalglish and Paisley sides. It was like an addiction. Now out of everyone I know in real life, I'm probably the maddest for the sport despite not even following it until I was about 11!

That night when we beat AC Milan was the night that changed me from a football fan to a Liverpool fan, and it stole my father away from fishing for the next decade as well!

It's weird how life goes, but if when I'd asked to stay up that night my dad had said "no" I might never have been a Liverpool fan and I could've been trolling your site under the name "East Midlands Bluenose!"

Myself, I was born a red and was brought up by my Dad on a diet of everything Liverpool. I was lucky enough to go to St Mary's junior school in Garston, Liverpool. I say lucky because my first teacher in infants was Mrs Paisley, Bob Paisley's wife. We always got to see the great man himself and even the players would come to the school when we did our Christmas play (still remember being told to say my lines as I gazed into the audience and seen some of my heroes sitting there watching me.). Also, when we won the European cup we would have an assembly during the morning and in would walk the great man in his grey suit carrying the European cup. What made it all the more sweeter was seeing the look on my best mates face who was a blue nose. and whose stepdad was Tommy Wright who played right back for Everton. Still got some pictures left in the loft taken from the great man's many visits to the school. It truly was a magical time for someone so young and something that I will never forget.

Interesting!

I myself am definitely an OOT. In fact my closest club for the first 9 years of my life was West Ham, who I still have a soft spot for as I watched my first game at Upton Park. All of my family were Hammers fans.

When I was around 5-6 (early 1980s) I followed players rather than clubs, and I was a big fan of Keegan. So I supported Southampton and then Newcastle. When he retired I switched to Trevor Brooking and became a Hammers fan for 2-3 weeks until he retired too!

Thinking that I couldn't keep chopping and changing teams, I decided to spread my risk third time around and selected Rush and Grobbelaar, so my loyalties fell to Liverpool.

By the time they moved on, I was entrenched in the club and I have remained a red ever since. I could, however, have picked any 2 players and ended up supporting that team instead.

Agree3 Disagree0

I live in London and my grandfather was friends with Arsenal's then manager, Bertie Mee so he used to give us free tickets to watch Arsenal.

My favourite player was Ray Kennedy and when my grandfather told me he had been sold to Liverpool that was the first time I had ever heard of a transfer (I was 5 years old I think) so I just said "well I'm also transferring to Liverpool". Within a day of that I watched Liverpool beat Newcastle in the FA cup final and I've never looked back!

My whole family are born and bred in Liverpool. All my dad and his family are blues, all my mums side are red. Luckily I grew up on the right side!
Also, my first ever football match I saw was Tenerife. I grew up there and South Africa and oddly enough, Benitez was the manager then. After then moving back to England, I watched Liverpool v Valencia and Benitez was managing Valencia, should have seen the signs!
Cannot not remember I day I didn't support Liverpool and when we lose it completely ruins the whole weekend! Strange how a football club can mean so much to so many

Agree3 Disagree0

Adam. I was one of those singing at half time. I just wanted us to show some pride. By extra time I was knackered but was still trying to urge on the lads. We were riding a roller coaster that night. It was fate that we won it. Still not the best night for me. I was there in Rome in 77

Agree7 Disagree0

Well my dad and cousin (who we lived with for my early years) are both Liverpool supporters so I didn't have much choice haha, was probably wearing a Liverpool shirt before I could even comprehend what a football was

anyway, my most prominent memory of Liverpool growing up after running round shouting Robbie Fowler was being told I could stay up to watch the CL Final only for my mum to send me to bed at half time because it wasnt worth me staying up to watch us lose because I had school the next day - little did she know that I sneaked into the bedroom across the hall from me and watched it on volume 1 ready to run back to bed if I heard someone come up the stairs, luckily I only had to do that once or twice and nobody came upstairs to sleep so I managed to watch the whole game - well worth it

A little about me.

32, lifelong Liverpool fan as are my whole family. Live in Cardiff, go to Anfield about 5 times a season (should go more!) but with 2 little kiddies, isn't always that easy, especially when the wife has already planned the weekend!

Played semi-professionally in the League of Wales. Had trials for Cardiff, Swansea, Derby & Watford as a kid (who hasn't hey?). An FAW 'C' Licence holder, but haven't coached in a few years due to being able to play again (Cue violin!). Hoping to go back into coaching when the kiddies get a bit older.

Favourite ever player? John Barnes

Best player I've played against? Joe Cole - he played for Islington, I played for Cardiff schools.

A great player you wouldn't imagine being that good? Nigel Quashie. A few years older than me. Watched him against a good mate who was with Cardiff City and he was incredible.

Anyway. Have a good weekend and 3-0 Sunday.

Agree4 Disagree0

The only sport I really grew up with was Boxing, I don't think there was anyone in my family who was into football, but because I was from Leeds i'd always say I supported Leeds United, even though I couldn't name one player at the time.

I moved away from leeds when I was 8 years old and I only really got into footy when I was in high school. One of my mates was a United fan and I started watching footy round at his house. Just for fun, I would always cheer on the opposition whilst he and his family were all cheering for United.

I never really supported any team until watching the CL final 2005. After that match I knew instantly that Liverpool was going to be my team and haven't looked back since.

I am still really the only one in the family who is into football except for my 12 year old brother who is a Liverpool supporter because of me and my 2 year old son who has no choice haha.

Not sure if your interested but hey here goes.

Born to parents who had no interest in sport near Watford. Moved to a council estate 39 years ago approximately 40 miles from London (lots of London / north London families this was there first opportunity of living in their own home / not with family etc. ). Parent's still live in same house. Closest teams were Luton or Watford (but still 20 - 25 miles away).

Started playing football as a kid and as most people supported Arsenal and Spurs I didn't have any affiliation to a team on a Saturday I was allowed to watch Match of the day (as long as Liverpool were playing) - in short my dad didn't like football but if he was going to have to watch it he wanted to watch good / exciting football.

then it began; Liverpool scarfs, mugs etc. (first Mug was in 1977 with the players faces on; I think nearly all but one or two players had moustaches - I must have had that Mug 10 years!).

Yeap i'm an OOT one of my best mates lives down here (used to be my neighbour) and he's a season ticket holder; always welcomed but all his now my mates in Liverpool.

I grew up in New Zealand with a Scouse father who has always been Liverpool mad. Myself and my 2 brothers were always kitted out in something LFC related even when we had Hitachi as our sponsors.
Between us we must have converted hundreds of Kiwis who knew nothing about our beloved club to support us.
In a rugby mad country there was only one thing I ever really cared about and that was LFC.
I have lived and travelled all over the world and ended up in some crazy places watching our games in the wee hours.
Always with a football at my feet and a LFC shirt on I have meet fellow reds in the most unlikely places. We all share the same love regardless of where we may live.
I live in London now and get to all the London games and quite a few home games throughout the season.
My old man has just come over from NZ for a holiday and along with my son ( who is as passionate as any supporter I have ever meet ) we were all in the Kop together for the Dortmund game last week and are going up on Sunday for Southampton. Nothing better than experiencing together the one thing we all love more than anything else.
We love you Liverpool, we do!

Agree2 Disagree0

Adam, I became a red from birth, my dad came over to live and work in Liverpool from Belfast in the fifties, having no allegiance to the reds or blues he went to Goodison Park one week and then Anfield the week after and made the best decision of his life (he didn't tell my ma that though). The rest as they say is history, he brought 5 sons up as red men. I've got many things to thank my dad for but bringing me up a pred has got to be the biggest. I done the usual graduation for a scouse red, went with my dad from about the age of 6 (1970 ish) and watched the likes of clemence, lawler, lyndsay, smith, hughes, cally, etc, I then graduated to the boys pen and then took my right of passage to the Kop. Since then I've been to almost all league games at home maybe missing 20 odd games through family or work commitments and been to a fair few away games, in a ten year spell in the 80's me and my brother and our mates went home and away league and cup every week, if we missed 2 or 3 away games in a season we would be gutted.
A little story about Istanbul for you, at the time I didn't have a season ticket in my name so I didn't "qualify" for a ticket. Tickets were like gold dust on steds costing upton a grand, flights and hotel rooms were scarce to say the least. I could not get a ticket anywhere, I ended up feeling sorry for myself saying I love the team but I hate the club ( the way the club is/was run regards tickets is b*******) and was resigned to not going. On the Tuesday before the game (wed) I was on my way home from work and pulled into the petrol station for juice(petrol) and saw the Echo on the counter, on the front page was a group of reds with the scarves and flags with the Blue Mosque behind them, I thought, what the f**k am I doing here! I got home mad my eldest son bombed through the door and said "dad, my teacher has got a spare ticket, face value, he's in Istanbul, do you want it"? Are you kidding kid, I'm on my way I said.
I was told to meet the teachers dad in Taksim Square, he would have a Scunthorpe reds banner.
As I said flights were scarce but my nephew worked for a travel agent, he got me a flight to Frankfurt and a conception to Istanbul.
I arrived in Istanbul around midnight, I had nowhere to stay, I followed my nose and ended up in an area full of bars full of reds. I quickly met a lad from my area who said " jump in our hotel lad, no problem" typical scouser, we swapped numbers and I said if I don't get a room I will call him and take him up on his offer. Anyway, I was in and out of hotels with no rooms at all, then as I'm getting tired I got a room in a small hotel. I went back out, few beers bit of scran and back to hotel to get some sleep. I didn't have a clue where about in Istanbul I was so when I got up in the morning I was preparing myself for a trek to Taksim Square, I opened my curtains looked out of the window and what did I see? The Scumthorpe reds banner, I was in Taksim Square! What a touch, I went to the guy holding the banner, I got my ticket, face value plus a gratefully given drink on the side, I was buzzing.
We all know what happened, what a night, anyway my flight was early hours in the moring so I left for the airport more or less straight after the game, I gets to the airport to check in and found that I had no voice left, I mean no voice whatsoever, my mouth was moving but nothing and I mean nothing was coming out, I was like that for two or three days, I'd sung my heart out for the lads, what a journey, what an event to witness, and to think I nearly missed it.
Sorry for the long post lads and ladies but once I got going.

Nobody has been more critical than me of our defence over the last few seasons and sometimes I've been castigated for my views. However, I couldn't be happier with our current set-up.
Manquillo looks like a shrewd addition on the right and will hopefully crack it in the Prem. Moreno at LB will be a fantastic signing and with Flanagan, Johno etc. we look pretty well equipped in those positions for at least a few seasons.
The signing of Lovren is a no-brainer. . well done to us for securing our future captain!
I hope balancing the books doesn't prevent us from keeping Danny Agger but I feel it might. I think the lad deserves a decent move and I wish him all the best if he gets it.
Martin Skrtel will benefit from a vocal leader like Lovren and should prove to be a very able squad-member but Lovren/Sakho at CB should be a permanent and immovable presence for the foreseeable future.
I really hope we keep hold of Llori and Wisdom and that these two don't lose heart with the possible lack of opportunities.
Good luck to Martin Kelly (you'll need it lad!) and I always thought he could've been a fantastic Centre Back for us if he'd been able to steer clear of injury.
Additionally, we have a lot of talent at U-21 level who will get their chances in the minor comps in 2014/15.
As well as being better defensively, we are potentially more dynamic going forward from the back and more of a threat at corners.
I can't wait for the new season and I am confident that, despite a tricky start, we can secure 7pts from our opening 3 games and 10pts from the first 4 games.
Come on you mighty reds!

I very much doubt wisdom will make it for Liverpool. Decent player but he isn't the best fullback and may be a touch too small for centre back. He will make a good player for derby or notts forest in the future

Agree3 Disagree0

He might make a good player for West Brom? Remember he did play practically a full season for us. I think he could make it in the Premier League easily enough.

Agree1 Disagree0

Wisdom is so under rated on here. He was U21's captain for England. Too small to play centre back? He is 6ft 1 for god sake. I'm pretty sure Lovren is only 6ft 2. Wisdom is an excellent young player and he will easily make it in the Premier league. I personally would keep him as the third or fourth choice centre back for the 2015/16 season if his loan goes well.

It's not all about height. Wisdom is fast, strong as a ox and very composed. He reminds me of Sylvain Distin although not at that level yet. Ask any Derby fan how good he was last season. The two I know swear blind he was their best player and tipped him to captain the national side one day.

Agree8 Disagree0

Wisdom too small? He's a beast of a lad. .

Agree3 Disagree0

I really do not see Wisdom getting a fair shot at LFC. Too many CBs at the club already and Manquillo joining means the two positions that Wisdom can play are already over stocked. The loan looks more like a strategy to increase his transfer fee when the club decide to sell him next summer.

Carrying on from yesterdays discussion about finances, the BBC reported on a survey carried out across all leagues. It made very interesting reading, apparently 21% of Premier League Clubs Finance Directors (who responded) believed their "owners are considering a full or partial exit in the next 12 to 18 months, compared with none in 2013".
"while 57% of respondents were either not expecting to make a profit in their next accounting period, or were unsure if they will, indicating that loss-making is still rife".

Stark figures indeed! Worth a read.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Could you supply a link to the article, please?

Agree0 Disagree0

My uncle is an aCcountant at KPMG. It's worth noting most clubs try to avoid making any profit, as you get taxed. They will if they can do some clever accounting to make losses, so that any future profit can be offset against the losses incurred over a 5 year period. It's a very well known tactic within football accounting

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Is your uncle party to these frauds then? Another example of why we don't discuss money.}

Ed002 I know he's worked as an audit consultant when going through clubs finacial statements. This is what he told me is part and parcel of the business.

Sometimes the way they window dress the accounts is illegal other times it's a misrepresentation. He obviously can't go into details because of confidentiality. I would hope if he found something fraudulent he would report it, but not every case of window dressing is fraudulence.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is fraud and illegal - he has a responsibility to report this. If he doesn't he and he gets caught then he will be stripped of his credentials and be liable to prosecution. You might want to point this out to him. I don't know of any English sides who would condone this nowadays - certainly knowing that they would be stripped of points, thrown out of the league etc.. It would be relegation as a minimum I would think. There are plenty of examples of financial irregularities in the past - Hereford, Chester City, Rangers, Luton, Juventus and Malaga all come to mind. He must be the ultimate jerk if he works for a reputable firm such as KPMG and gets involved in this.}

Eds I could come up with several ways of window dressing balance sheets etc that wouldn't be illegal but I imagine you being the expert in everthing irregardless of a persons professional background would just argue against.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I don't give a damn what you or your uncle do for a living any more so than I suspect you care what I do for a living. You brought us news of fraud that your uncle seems to condone. Perhaps we can all go visit him in the big house some time. As for "window dressing" balance sheets - is this something your uncle showed you how to do?}

Bobatron I'd stop this discussion if I were you. I don't mean that offensively though so please don't take it as an insult, but you are not your Uncle and shouldn't try to explain what he explained to you, as your understanding obviously won't be as good. You could be getting things wrong and land him in a lot of trouble for someting I'm sure he isn't guilty of. It's unfair to discuss his business dealings without him being here to defend himself.

For your uncles sake, I'd let this one go mate.

Agree11 Disagree2

Sorry but I won't let it go, I get fed up of 002 making stuff up and not always posting comment, I had a debate with him a while back about sturridge not getting in the chelsea team and he said it was down to drogba keeping him out not torres, neglecting my final post where I pointed out to him, that sturridge still didn't get a start, and barely played for the 6 months after Drogba left.

It's not the first times certain debates have been nicely edited either. And I don't like it 1 bit.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I have not edited anything you have said.

Firstly let us deal with Sturridge. Sturridge was kept out of the centre forward position by Drogba when he was at the club. He was then injured for the first part of the 2012/13 season before his transfer to Liverpool - which is why he didn't get picked for the team. Nothing else.

So what do you think I have "made up". You come on here telling us your uncle is a fraudster working for KPMG. Fine. All I did was point out the error of his ways and pointed out that clubs do not condone the provision of fraudulent accounts. I gave examples of clubs that have suffered greatly when caught in respect of financial irregularities.

You then dribble on about "window dressing" balance sheets.

It would be interesting to se if KPMG wish to comment on your revelations and their employing this charlatan of an uncle of yours?}

Financial statements are for sissies. Because of accounting tricks and manipulations that do distortion on the real numbers. That's why some analyst say that the "profit" is nothing more than opinion of the accountant.
What is more important here - the cash-flow based models.
Profit? They use it to calculate how much tax to pay to the government.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Another great example why we don't want to be discussing finances with football supporters. I would be happy to do so but this is typical of the sort of stuff we see all of the time.}

Theres a world of difference between creative accounting and illegal activity.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - The hole of stupidity seems be getting a little larger now? The discussion was regarding the KPMG fraudster that Bobatron is related to, but feel free to bring forth your stories of Liverpool's "creative accounting"; or any other EPL side? I am sure the police, HMG, UEFA, The FA and The Premier League would be interested in them.}

This is easily the most entertaining back and forth i've read on this site for a while. Finally my Accounting degree has come in handy! Bobatron, I agree entirely with EMS, just drop it. It's very easy to pick up the wrong end of the stick when talking about big companies accounts, and if you don't have a financial background, this can then lead to things being said that a) might not be true and b) can get people in a lot of bother. If you insist on proving you're right, get your uncle to register and reply, otherwise, just leave it be.

On another note, one of my friends I went to Uni with got a job with Price Waterhouse Cooper when he graduated, and one of his first jobs was helping with the Audit of Rangers FC. i'm sure he saw some wonderful things going on in those books!

Agree4 Disagree0

So ed's, some form of window dessing is possible and not illegal.

It's done all the time, some window dressing can be fraudulent others isn't.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Astonishing stuff. You really have to keep this coming for me.}

Well, that was fun to read. Perhaps your uncle can turn me into a millionaire with his "creative accounting"?

Agree3 Disagree0

I wish my accountant could manipulate my figures. Let me know who your uncle is Bobatron. ;-)

Agree5 Disagree0

I'm a Chartered Accountant and cringing at this thread.

There are many ways to reduce a profit but I severely doubt your uncle was referring to cooking the books being one of them nor would he ever admit to it.

There are tax efficient ways to set up a company but In this day and age, stupid expenditure is a great way to bring down profits as is spending more money than you bring in which is the most common problem in football today!

Ed002 are you an accountant?

{Ed002's Note - No.}

15 Aug 2014 16:18:45
EMS i'm training to be an accountant myself, I know exactly what he meant. I just love it when Ed002 gets on his high horse about things he hasn't a clue about.
window dressing is something you learn about when taking your FSG exams with acca Ed002 such as how does an expense reach the criteria to become an asset, when reporting dates are altered, when to account for an asset purchase, on arrival/on payment etc etc.

There are ltierally 100s of ways to window dress accounts.
It's not illegal or fraudulant. Tell me Ed002 when Liverpool altered their reporting date to 10 months, was that illegal?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You really are a complete jerk aren't you. You come here with tales of your uncle and frauds he condones as an officer of a well respected firm of accountants, KPMG, who I have regular dealings with. I have more than enough knowledge of what is legal and what is not legal in respect of the running of football clubs.

I have no idea why you think Liverpool changing the date of their annual reporting period would be illegal- it is not and something which businesses often do.

If your grandfather was as much of a wanker as you are, then we would not need to deal with these tedious stories about the charlatan and fraudster that is your uncle.}

15 Aug 2014 17:17:31

There are some forms of Window Dressing that are completely legal. One of them certainly isn't 'cooking books' in order to avoid paying tax on any profits from the business. Any respectable accountant would immediately report any suspicions of malpractice, such as this.

For the avoidance of any doubt.

Window dressing is when you put on your clothes and forget to draw the curtains first .

Think i'm right in saying the Moreno deal will need to be officially announced before 12:30 for him to be eligable for Sundays game. One of the Eds may need to confirm that.

Either way, I don't think he will play anyway and more likely to be Johnson filling in their until we play the following week. They'd have been working on the back four for the game all week surely.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It is nothing to do with it being "officially announced", it is to do with the paperwork being processed by the FA and International Clearance granted.}

Not a question for the eds specifically, but other than Bony, what other good strikers are out there who we could realistically sign and consider a good signing? I can't think of too many personally.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2014 08:53:08
Theres good strikers available.
Mario Gomez
Bakkali
Lavezzi
Higuain
Podolski
Bony
J. Rodriguez (S.Hampton)
Eto'o

any many many more.

Its just whether any of them fit in with what we want in any way. They are all different ages and standards and offer different possibilities.
Pereonally only Bony, J.Rod and Bakkali would be an option for me, and J.Rod is injured, Bakkali is a bit short of experience. Higuain is good enough but expensive.

Agree0 Disagree2

15 Aug 2014 09:44:59
Podolski would be a decent signing IMO. He is clearly out of favour at Arsenal.
Bony looks like more happening given the fact, He is willing to come to us and is a proven goal scorer.

I would have added Eduardo Vargas in the list, He is a very talented yet underrated player. Would thrive under the counter attacking style we have.

TBH, We are expecting a lot from Sterling and Sturridge this season.

1. Has Moreno signed? I would have preferred to see Rojo come in.
2. Is there any news on Reus, Bony or Lacazette? I think if we signed either Reus on his own or Bony along with Lacazette we would have a very good chance at competing for the league this year.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

Moreno is far better than Rojo

Simply by the way Rojo has thrown all his toys out of the pram and a legal case might be occurring in order to push through a move to United, I say it is a very good thing we steered well clear. Plus Moreno is better and yes it should go through today.
