Good news guys, inside news Luis Suárez has confirmed he has no intention of leaving Liverpool he is about to sign new long-term contract.

Tiger Jay YNWA

A new money term contract with like one year extra, same sort of thing we kept doing with Torres like 2-3 times no biggy.

It is a biggy when it throws millions onto the potential transfer fee (as it did Torres).

First of all, to those claiming that the '05 CL win had nothing to do with rafa because "it was houllier's squad" are deluded. If that was the case why didn't houllier win the CL? Houllier's team was poor, it was thanks to rafa's, frankly amazing, tactical abilities we got to the final.
So please don't slate rafa. Regardless of his last season, he will be a liverpool legend.

But that doesn't mean we should have him back. This is a new era at Liverpool Football Club - one without rafa. Rafa had some really great and some really poor signings. Had he been in kenny's position during our recent, relatively big transfer windows, who knows who'd have signed good or bad (or even average). And there's no point speculating either, as you are simply waisting your time.

Eds are we looking at Scott Sinclair as a possible creative player/winger. I think he's great. {Ed003's Note - Swansea games have been watched,I think he had a good/average start to the season but nothing special in my eyes}

Djibril Cisse, Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso

Rafa bought these three players to help him win the Champions league.

Rafa bought in Xabi Alonso and Garcia. At that time in history we had a very weak center midfield and he fixed it.

Inspired by the manager.

Houllier had no chance in hell of winning anything. Rafa changed that team with three signings.

Then we had a few other problems in midfield. The left side was weak and the right side was weak. In the end we put John Arne Risse on the left side and this new boy called Garrard on the Right side. That became our champions league team.

We bought in someone to play at lbk and Carra was converted to play as a CBK, Steve Finnan and we already has Hypia and Jerzy Dudek

Jerzy Dudek; 3-Steve Finnan, 4-Sami Hyypia, 23-Jamie Carragher, 28-Stephen Warnock;

6-John Arne Riise, 8-Steven Gerrard, 16-Dietmar Hamann, 25-Igor Biscan, 10-Luis Garcia;

5-Milan Baros

Ashely Williams - CBK seems to be good cbk.

Who cares anyway.
Its history, 8 years ago.
Try supporting the current manager in the same way that you worship at the Rafa altar!.

Cisse was signed by Houlier. Gerrard was our star player loooong before '05. Carra wasn't 'converted', he was played out of his chosen possition until 'converted' to a CB. Poor

just like to say as BLUERAY said the vast majority of chelsea fans observed the minute silence today , dont make the mistake of thinking different , 99.9 per cent of all fans from every club are descent people , we should not hate people for what no reason , dont fall into that trap , we are better than that...............lfc

Didn't sound like the vast majority observed the minute silence.

Completely agree - there are person fans in every club. Chelsea came out and apologised straight away for the behavior of a small minority of their crowd as they should. Lets not drag this out as an issue....lets just hammer the living daylights out of their goal in the cup final and publicly dedicate the performance to the 96.

All clubs have idiotic fans (even us). Unfortunately I think this will always be the case. But if this were our fans that did this today. You can guarantee it would be top billing on SSN.

The FA said that they wanted to stamp out the hateful chanting from all clubs fans. Lets see what they do about this, probably nothing.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Agree totally Blair. Just after watchin ITN sports news and they mentioned controversial incidents from todays football but no mention of it. Its sad really. I hope this doesn't overshadow what should be a day of remembrance to the 96 but at the same time it shouldn't be ignored. They shouldn't and won't be forgotten and should never ever be disrespected. That could be any fan of any club at any match but for it to be a semi on their anniversary makes it all the more shameful. I just hope our fans keep it together come the final and don't bow down to the level of those scumbags. I have no doubt thats a Chelsea minority, altho looking at the Chelsea fans websites about 50% are like "so what". They should realise how lucky they are to be alive tonight.

TAYPOT

Been in the house all day TAYPOT mate (got the flu). And not once did SSN mention our memorial service, for our 96. Even after what happened with the Chelsea fans, still no mention. They would rather talk about Neil Lennon's rant about the ref on twitter. SSN are the standard bearers on all what's wrong with biased sports journalism and the gutter press.

They might have forgot about them but we never will.

Chelsea fan here in peace. I know it makes little difference with what does goons ,wouldn't call them chelsea fans or football fans much less humans did today ,but I think I wouldn't be at rest if I don't come on here to apologise to all liverpool fans and the family and friends affected. There is no place for an act like that. May the 96 rest in peace and may God bless the families and friends. Again I'm really sorry and I can safely say not all chelsea fans should be condemned and Un behalf of all Chelsea fans on this site and the lots that are innocent we are really sorry. Goodluck to u guys . -BLUERAY-

Fair play to you, we all have person so-called fans. Got a mate who is a Chelsea fan, he is a good lad and I'm sure when I see him this week he will express the same sentiments.

15 million for a young keeper. The only way I'd do it is buy him now and loan him back.

I stood on those terraces at Sheffield Wednesday in the eighties watching United not knowing what a horrific tragedy would unfold only a short time later. I went to watch football innocently just like they did but I went home. I watched on the television on that day 23 years ago as the horror unfolded. May the 96 rest in peace and on this day my thoughts are always with the families and hope there is justice.

Red Man

Much appreciated - for many of us older fans, we know that this could have happened anywhere to any clubs fans. Unfortunately some people still believe the lies pedalled at the time about Liverpool fans as Ive seen on so many forums recently.
Its reassuring to see some of the Chelsea fans coming on here to apologise. Each club has its own share of bigots and we shouldnt tar the vast majority of their fans by the actions of the few.

Ashely Young Cheats alot. Why don't the Refs pick up on him. they must notice the way he goes down like a little boy. Does it make a difference that he does it at Old Trafford. He wouldn't get these decisions away from man utd game. Poor Referring, plain cheating and how can anyone want this type of thing in the game.

Is it a part of the game? should footballers think. We have Old Trafford Capacity is 75,811 so that means we get everything going in our direction.

The ref will cave in because of the size of the stadium. Man utd don't have the best team, they can lose away from home. So its stadium that feeds into these decisions.

Well thats fine then - if its `part of the game` why does everyone moan about suarez - ashley young is getting away with it too many time
- typical

Ashley young has gotten away with this far too often...he has done it for years.

i remember when he was at villa a commentator said he should advertise on the bottom of his boots with the amount of times he dives.

Eds, Macca, lads and lasses,
There's an interesting article in The Sunday Telegraph today (I got the link off the BBC before anyone asks) about how Ian Ayre is in awe of Kenny Dalglish, and that the club needs to find somebody who is "capable of standing toe to toe" with Kenny.
Would this be accurate ed ?
I could see why someone like David Dein coming in would be useful in that regard.
All the very best for the Hillsborough Families.
Shocking about the Chelsea fans today.

Chelsea won by 5 goals. Wow. Do you think Liverpool will see that as maybe well we should of gotten Tottenham instead. Before the game, everyone wanted chelsea becuase they play slower football and it might of worked

Had tottenham won we would of said "oh should we have gotten chelsea" etc.

Chelsea won by THREE goals and another gift from a referee. However that was today and means nothing on 5th May. Anything can happen before then. By the way, a couple of points for you - the word is 'because', the expression is 'might HAVE worked', and finally, you forgot to sign you name (if you know what it is!).
Dutchmal

I wanted Chelsea to win because we've beaten them in cup competition before and have won our last 4 games against them. They'll be really up for it and are a quality side so it should be a good match but I certainly think we can beat Chelsea

Red Ollie

Chelsea were terrible in the first half. If we get a couple of goals in the first half we're always more dominant in the second [in the cups anyway] so we'll hopefully go on to win.

BthekingB

Spurs were unlucky.
2nd goal should never have stood, and Cech should have been red carded.
These 2 incidents changed the game.

In one of the newest and most impressive stadiums, and in front of 85000 Martin Atkinson *nd his team truly 'fluffed their lines'.

I hoped we got chelsea, we can't play against spurs in the last 2-3 seasons. we beat chelsea a lot so that would be a better chance for us. and we would have the psychological advantage

15 Apr 2012 20:39:11
Yes it was horrendous what the fans were doing during the Semi, innexcusable. However you lot aren't always respectful are you? (The Oldam game). Anyway R.I.P to the 96 and Morosini.

Ben {Ed001's Note - Ben that has already been dealt with, perhaps if you bothered to find out you would have learnt that all that was shouted out was that he was called a Manc. But that doesn't make as good news as lying about it being racist abuse does it?}

Nice Ed, nice.

Lee YNWA

Your a disgrace Ben. Good on ya ed! LY

Well said ed. Its one thing calling a player a Manc but its something totally different disrespecting the memory of 96 people that went to a match and never made it home. Those low-life scumbags that made all the noise and came out with those vile chants should remember that those 96 were in the same situation as they were today, supporting their team, and were innocent victims. They should feel lucky to be able to go home or go for a few pints to celebrate their win. Our 96 never had that "luxury". Shameful. And I won't paint all Chelsea fans with the same brush. What that group of fans did was scummy.

YNWA

The guy who was arrested for supposedly abusing Adeyemi was cleared of all charges, yet the media persisted in vilifying LFC and all connected with it - meanwhile Man Utd had a fan convicted of actually abusing a player and Glen Johnson was racially abused at the Etihad. But of course all this was swept under the carpet and ignored as dirty Johnny Foreigner Suarez and his evil racist manager King Kenny were on a crusade against all that was good in the world.

Another disgraceful weekend for referees, FA and some person fans, but a pretty good one for us. I have a feeling that goal line tech, video, infrared, microchips, bugs, wiretaps and crystal balls will all be implemented next year. The Prem is turning into a real joke and it is so sad I can't even laugh it off anymore. Surely, this has got to be the absolute worst season of the Prem to date. I always considered myself a football fan first and a Liverpool fan second, but I have to say that if it weren't for LFC I wouldn't watch it anymore. Surely, something has to happen to fix this mess. I'm not looking to start anything with anyone; I just feel that when the league looks bent no-one wins.

Canadian Fan

Lack of goal-line tech and absurd penalty awards to Man Utd are making a mockery of the league.

The people running the game need to get their fingers out.

Ashley Williams - Swansea - CBK

now he seems to be great and all of Swansea play goes through him. His pass rate is very good, he is also able to pass the ball forward. So would a player like him fit into our team. I personally like the way he plays it. He also wins alot of headers and likes to get higher up the pitch when swansea play higher up the pitch.

And I wonder why media makes an awful lot for simple handshake incident and fans shouting something else against an oldham player and nothing for this pathetic behavior.

Trust me mate, I live down in London and I have hated Chelsea more than Utd for the last decade nearly. I've even had to sit in the Chelsea end at a game before as I couldn't get another ticket and the chants they were singing were sickening. Man Utd fans don't do that.

Any how on to the final, i am not worried about them, they were out classed first half but got a great goal through Drogba... that second goal was a disgrace...

but we have stuffed them twice this season, if we keep Mata quiet we will be fine, they play so predictable and boring, i'm not going to get into any arguments with there fans, they don't deserve it, i just can not wait until May 5th!

I wanted Tottenham Hotspur

I have a friend who loves to gamble and he kept going on about the pitch when lfc where playing. he said the pitch is too slow. The passing is down to the grass being too long. The pitch just isn't right.

Then he went on about Chelsea being a simple passing team who cross in the ball after a few simple balls.

Skrtel has shown what is needed by a Liverpool captain, he is the first one to congratulate anyone who scores he is the first one there when a player is being cautioned by the ref, he shows aggression in defence and inspires the others, like gerrard many moons ago. Make him full time captain.

6 months later might not even qualify for the Champions League and no trophies!

God Bless Ode Cheeky no VAT wideboy Deputy Dog Harry!

Lyndon

Kenny dalglish 2011-2012, 2 finals, 1 victory so far.
this during a run of poor form.

harry redknapp 2011-2012, a run of poor form equal to kenny's BUT WITH HIS STRONGEST 11.
his whole managerial career, 2 finals, 1 victory so far.

harry wil probably get to manage england despite his tactics being responsible for the 5-1 defeat when he took van der vaart out of midfield and allowed his team to get over run.

kenny has had a couple of blips in his 1st season back but wins a cup semi final with his substitutions at the right time and may well add to the trophy cabinet again!

for those that wish for a different manager, be careful what you wish for because even england's best ain't good enough.

I have always hated the view held in many quarters that footballers should be regarded as role models to young people.Personally I have always held the opinion that, apart from their football ability, that I could not think of any worse role models for my children.

Stand up Brad Jones,a perfect role model for anyone,a proud man who has been through the worst hell any parent can contemplate, such dignity and such respect to his young son.Brad,I for one would be honoured if my children looked to you as a role model and am proud to see you playing for my beloved team.

It was some of the Chelsea fans, f###ing classless scum, fair play to the spurs fans for showing a bit of class

It came from the chelsea end, i think it's to do with the fact we played yesterday and they play today, ahead of their champions league semi final. Absolute disgrace.

Apparently it was the Chelsea fans.

This is an absolute disgrace to the game of football;how can that blatant penalty stand or is it because it was manutd.I have never liked manutd and will continue to be.

What did the penalty change exaktly, wasent like Villa had the game til it happend. Lets focus on whats really mathers and stop being bitter, YNWA LFC!

The Rob

The Rob
The point is not what the penalty will change but it is not acceptable. We knew Villa had no chance ( no disrespect) but still there shouldn't be no favoring. If ts like that then why to play just award the cup to them . It is not just us being bitter but something has to be done , i mean they fall where ever in the penalty box under whatever circumstances and they get a penalty and the rest have to fight for it . It is not just us particularly but almost every manager facing them would say so.

AJI

I have to agree with you, but theres factors like the pressure on toilet with 75,000 screaming. And red nose pointing fingers..
I guess my point is that there is no luck, you make your own luck. The players most play thrue every thing (sendings off, peneltys etc) and the fans should focus on driving them on (as at wembley), and scream for the dessicions when Suarez wavs for handballs for exempel.
If a ref sees that a team plays with out any flow and fall over instead of going on ball 100%, and the fans sit quiet..
In the head of a ref in a 50/50 the scream from the fans might make alot of diffrence.

So lets make our own luck out there, and force the dessicions a bit.

Ed...my take on the owners not being present at semi-final yesterday was simply that it coincided with another appointment with Red Sox. I guess they wanted to send a message that Red Sox was still important to them. I also think that that the fact they took decision the same week during their visit to Anfield was also a sign that they're just as concerned with Liverpool FC as Red Sox. Nothing sinister in them not being at Wembley yesterday. Do you agree Ed? Thanks. {Ed001's Note - I don't see it as an issue, I don't really care if they are there or not personally.}

Atleast your owners have been to one. Stan kroenke has never attended a game

Exactly ed, who cares if they are there or not, I'd rather they gave their tickets to a real fan that would sing their hearts out for the lads. Like me. {Ed001's Note - exactly! They would have got some great publicity by giving a couple of fans their seats, through a charity or something.}

Before people say 'glasshouses' with Suarez etc..

I'll think you'll find we haven't had decisions go our way all season. Just look at 2012 for example - so many pens not given.

Suarez gets stamped on and gets booked for diving!? (thanks Fergie) ... Young gets a tap on the shoulder or sees a leg and WHAM - pirouette and pain face.

Lee YNWA

Not only that its also commentators they are supposed to be neutral at least while doing their jobs yet they would have digs at suarez i.e ohhh hes cleaver he obviously saw blah, blaj, blah and made the most out of it, and about other players they would say, they felt enough and went to ground.

Is it just me or is rooney the most overated player in the league? I have watched him show flashes of magic and schoolboys error consistently for years and even despite his goals this year(many penalities) he has been no world beater.

Just needed to get this off my chest, and I got into an arguement recently about this. does the fact that his overhead kick hit his shin not take away from the goal v city 100%, its not like he meant it to s**t his shin...luck at its finest.

I've been saying it for years mate but our English media won't have it, he really is the emperors new clothes but they love him and we all know they what they're talking about because they're the experts, right?

Chris in Tamworth

Its unfortunate england dont have another striker to compete because his guaranteed to start.

Have you ever watched Rooney play live? I think your judgement on him would change if u did.

Am an LFC fan but i don't agree...that overhead kick last season was the awesome....if Suarez scored like that..would u say the same ? Rooney has very good technique.....u have got to respect talent...whichever club it belongs to..

He's the best forward in the league, closely followed by RVP, Aguero/Tevez and Suarez.

Been a great player sure but can't put him above RVP this season, and i'd have have any of aguero tevez or suarez in my team long before him...

He is overrated but is still a great striker I won't include Liverpool strikers to be fair

Watched Moyes's post match interview, after yesterdays game. He said either side deserved to win and he thought that Everton had contained us well in the 2nd half.

It should have been 3 or 4 only for Andy missing the header and Maxi hitting the post. We had most of the possession, we tried to play football (all they did was hoof it up to Jelavic), we had more chances and controlled most of the game.

I don't think Moyes was watching the same game the rest of the world was watching? But that's a toffee nose for you, full of sh!t and bitter to the very end.

Herrera played for Pachuco yesterday in a 1-2 defeat at home. Bueno came on as sub and scored the goal. Does anyone know if he will still be joining Liverpool now that he is 18?
Dutchmal

I hope, so. there's hardly a point of him not joining. he impressed during his trials and is looking a very top prospect in the mexican league. Hope, it'd be done soon. He seems a very top talent. YNWA trustme

Get both, they would have each other as company although herrera is older bueno is 18 still.

Carroll, Henderson and Downing WILL all come good - just Adam who I believe is out of his depth - Can see both Henderson and Carroll being long term at the club and bring talked about in the same terms as Toshack and Gerrard - Have faith - Alonso coming back to add the ammunition from midfield

The Justice Bell:-

A schoolboy holds a leather ball
in a photograph on a bedroom wall
the bed is made, the curtains drawn
as silence greets the break of dawn.

The dusk gives way to morning light
revealing shades of red and white,
which hang from posters locked in time
of the Liverpool team of 89.

Upon a pale white quilted sheet
a football kit is folded neat
with a yellow scarf, trimmed with red
and some football boots beside the bed.

In hope, the room awakes each day
to see the boy who used to play
but once again it wakes alone
for this young boy s not coming home.

Outside, the springtime fills the air
the smell of life is everywhere
viola s bloom and tulips grow
while daffodils dance heel to toe.

These should have been such special times
for a boy who d now be in his prime
but spring forever turned to grey
in the Yorkshire sun, one April day.

The clock was locked on 3.06
as sun shone down upon the pitch
lighting up faces etched in pain
as death descended on Leppings Lane.

Between the bars an arm is raised
amidst a human tidal wave
a young hand yearning to be saved
grows weak inside this deathly cage.

A boy not barely in his teens
is lost amongst the dying screams
a body too frail to fight for breath
is drowned below a sea of death

His outstretched arm then disappears
to signal thirteen years of tears
as 96 souls of those who fell
await the toll of the justice bell.

Ever since that disastrous day
a vision often comes my way
I reach and grab his outstretched arm
then pull him up away from harm.

We both embrace with tear-filled eyes
I then awake to realise
it s the same old dream I have each week
as I quietly cry myself to sleep.

On April the 15th every year
when all is calm and skies are clear
beneath a glowing Yorkshire moon
a lone Scots piper plays a tune.

The tune rings out the justice cause
then blows due west across the moors
it passes by the eternal flame
then engulfs a young boys picture frame.

His room is as it was that day
for thirteen years it s stayed that way
untouched and frozen forever in time
since that tragic day in 89.

And as it plays its haunting sound
tears are heard from miles around
they re tears from families of those who fell
awaiting the toll of the justice bell.

Everyone was complaining about why Carra was starting, and why Enrique was on the bench....
I firmly believe that KK gave Carra the nod out of respect to his service to the club. Kenny knew that if we got to the final, Jamie would be on the bench, so this was the best opportunity to give Carra a run in a red shirt at Wembley.
...something I think we can all agree he deserved.
Mark my word, the starting back 4, barring injury, will be: Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique.

YNWA USA

We'll see

Carra was there not out of respect to him, this is a semi final , not a testimonial, sentiment does not come into it, I think Carra was a starter because Kenny wanted players with semi final experience and derby experience, yes he made a mistake but I think most of us at Wembley saw and heard him organizing the defense again and again, when you have a rookie keeper, you need a cb to boss and organise.
I wont be surprised to see Carra again in the final.
Roy

They seem to manage fine without his shouting or organizational skills and they're of little use when you're the defender that needs the most shouting and and organizing. He's become the elephant in the room now only an elephant wouldn't be f**cked after 25 minutes

its the managers fault the way we have performed this season, swapping and changin the team every week just for the hell of it. i hope kenny see's his mistakes and learns how to play inform players regulary and believe in them. and not let money make him decide to put in the team to justify his buys. every manager has bad buys.

Yeah he just does it for the sake of it and doesnt take into account the talent of the players or how they do in training. there is alot that we don't know

I think that if lucas stays fit for all of next year we will be in with a good shout of 4th place providing we sign one winger. i dont think that we need soldado as andy carroll and luis suarez are starting to link up well and could be a force together next season. if we sign munian (big if) we will have a very good team

reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique

Downing Gerrard Lucas Munian

Suarez Carroll

also are we interested in gaston ramirez. i have watched him a few times and think he is a very good player

Just bcoz suarez and carrol have played well doesnt mean we dont need a striker. Kuyt will be leaving n needs replacing. Carrol is a targetman, suarez a creative striker, n our new signing shud be a clinical finisher, preferably soldado. To compete at the highest level, every team needs atleast 3 quality strikers.

Just watched Money Ball the movie. If it is as the movie, what they are trying to achieve at LFC. We will be a force to reckon with in the future. The only thing is that we need a manager that will gel all the players together. We have that for now but not sure whether Kenny can keep up with it. I can see a younger version of Kenny coming in the future.

Red in Shepp

It only just about worked in baseball and has
NO CHANCE of working in football. The whole
thing about the BPL is that is is so unpredictable you seriously can't be considering our chances due to that film I saw it too and if you knew anything about baseball its that the red sox got lucky and there are many other teams better than them who dont use moneyball.

Fact I agree, that there are many teams that do not use it. I for one wouldnt use it but I understand how they are trying to use it from watching the movie. Not easy and statistics dont always work. One thing that stats dont show is the passion and drive that players have or how big their heart or balls are. So im not sure how that stat is analysed

Are you sure you watched the movie? it had nothing to do with the red sox it was about the oakland A's and how they turned their form around with a fraction of the revenue that teams like the yankees had. the only reference to the red sox was at the very end when john w henry tried to sign billy beane (brad pitt) for boston because of what he had done at oakland. im not saying i buy into the idea of that working in football but at least get your facts straight if your gonna slag off the other guys original post

Excellent article in yesterday's Guardian by the secret footballer about moneyball http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/apr/13/secret-footballer-moneyball-stoke-liverpool?newsfeed=true.

The gist of the article is that baseball is primarily a 1 v 1 game pitcher v batsman. Football is a true team game and therefore harder to apply simple stats to. Stats such as final third entries, penalty box entries and regains of the ball in the final third can highlight imortant contributions of players who don't necessarily get many goals or assists. However such an approach better suits a team like Stoke with a simple game plan - balls into the box to Crouch, than it does a team who want to vary the point and style of attack. I think moneyball might well help a team consolidate itself in the Premiership like Stoke have done and Bolton did for years. However to challenge for the title, or even just the top four, you need creativity to unlock well organized defences (this is something we have lacked this year hence the number of draws at Anfield). This needs flair players with great individual skills and a great tactician in charge. It pains me that over recent seasons were we regularly linked with Aguero, Silva and Mata all of which have proved to be great successes in the Premiership. If we had signed just one of these flair players a couple of seasons ago I think we would be in much better shape now.

Today is a day when football takes the back seat and seems a little irrelevant, any of the Dalglish haters should remember what he done for the club, the city and most importantly the families after the Hilsborough disaster, I can still remeber the day, one of my earliest memories, the confusion I felt as a child as to how that could happen at a football match, my thoughts today are with the families who were affected, 96 never forgotten, and the pursuit of justice never given up. RE: Moneyball

I think it is one of a number of tools that can bring success to a club. The other factors (not in any order)are:

1) Stability
2) Money (Revenues/sponsors etc)
3) Scouting network
4) Manager and support staff/network
5) Player desire/will to win
6) The fans
7) Statistics/Analysis
8) Youth investment/structure (includes some of the earlier points I know)

So the big question is how much of these have Liverpool got in place vs our major competitors?

1) Stability - Not really, three managers in three years is not stable, plus the ownership change and ins/outs of senior people at the club does not give the impression of stability.

Man Utd - Manager has been there 26 years and the owners have been there several years with just ocassional movement in Fergie's support structure.

2) Money - there was a good article on this the other day. Liverpool have not increased their revenues due to lack of Champions league football and hampered by the stadium size. Manchester Utd and Manchester City have bigger stadiums. We have resolved our debts issue, however we are outmuscled financially for several players which means we cannot get the world's best talent consistently which of course will hamper the team's chances.

3) Scouting network, our scouting network is not particularly impressive - very hit and miss to say the least. Needs reviewing, just look at Newcastle's scouting network, good players on small transfer fees and no doubt wages. Manchester Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City also to some extent have a better scouting network, though Arsenal and Chelsea have dropped off noticeably over the last couple of years. Is this for us a disconnect between strategy and player scouting and acquisition? I personally believe we need to look at more foreign talent, there must be more Torres and Suarez out there!
4) Manager and support staff. Fergie has been around consistently for 26 years and had won most things numerous times. Liverpool have had 7 changes of manager in that time. Dalglish was out of the game for 13 years before he came back whereas Fergie had been there all that time, also the likes of Wenger, Mancini and most of the Chelsea managers had recent experience and success. Howevewr Dalglish has won a trophy and on the verge of possibly another trophy. He knows how to win, but is he the long-term solution. Most of his signings have been very poor indeed and only in the cups have they looked anything towards being decent. Liverpool's league form has been shocking when you consider how well Newcastle and Everton have done with little money. He should be judged on this. Do we need to change manager or give Dalglish another year to get us into the Champions league.
5) Player will to win - that has been severely lacking in many league games and it's noticeable Gerrard has only been at his best here and there and the team lacks a driving force. When we have gone a goal down, we go another goal down without responding or we just cannot score. The players all need to look at themselves. Look at Manchester Utd, how many last minute goals do they get or get lucky breaks. Or Manchester City to a lesser extent, they find a way to win - we need to do that. We did in 2009 it wasn't that long ago!
6) The fans - we don't help ourselves at times by not getting behind the team, me for one but it's difficult when we all know the team should be higher than 8th in the league. Maybe we need to perform better?
7) Statistical/Analysis - It is a good to have these tools as it highlights a players strengths and weaknesses but is purely an objective tool that doesn't include players passion or subjective opinion. Also it only shows players in another team and their situation and can't take into account what happens when you put them in another team with different teammates and the all-important "gelling" and "chemistry", we've seen players not doing what they did for their previous clubs last year because they are doing slightly different jobs or playing in a different system/position; Adam,Downing, Carroll, Henderson are prime examples. Adam is playing a deeper role, not suited to him, Carroll has not had the service, Downing has been played away from the left at times and Henderson at right back or right wing more than the middle. This partially explains the lack/loss of form. Dalglish is at fault for not building a team and not using players atttributes correctly. Look at other teams and they've had players that slot in and deliver particularly Newcastle but then that is tied with scouting and having a system and good strategy. Man Utd have had problems as have all our rivals with team gelling at times.
8) Youth investment - excellent over the last five years and must rival our competitors. We have seem Spearing, Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson and Sterling all come through with the latter having most promise of all. Also there are many other youngsters not far away such as Suso, Coady and Morgan that should push for contention. We are buying good young talent such as Jordan Ibe and Shelvey which shows we have a good youth scouting network and good coaching structure.

Hessle Red {Ed001's Note - you do realise that what people incorrectly refer to as Moneyball, is simply the statistical analysis of players.}

You never mentioned talent in your 1-8 list, something we are seriously lacking.

I can see dan the man in that position, I think he could make it his own!!

I don't think Agger is a good enough passer for CDM. Good enough from the back, but not good enough in the busy areas. He was sloppy with his passing from LB on the weekend.

I suspect the sinister twist to which Macca refers re: Comolli is the fact that the Frenchman tried to get his excuses in first with the owners and was actively trying to get Kenny the sack to bring his own man in. It backfired spectacularly but Dalglish is not safe as manager.

well done yesterday good luck in final , i can't stand london teams .i live in liverpool walton i support newcastle united most liverpool fans i meet now are very bitter towards my team WHY ?would u swap your season for newcastle 's ? the problem i see with liverpool at the minute there not bringing world class players through there youth system like in the past likes of gerrard fowler mcmanaman carra etc . also need to build a bigger stadium cos they could get 70+ a week there i kno a lot of supporters can't get tickets for home games too many foreign supporters in anfield

Think most lpool fans would like to see newcastle get into the champions leauge this season mate , its only banter when newcastle fans come on here giving it the big one , but remember its geting into the top 4 year after year that makes you a big club mate , something even we have to start to do again , about the forgein support , its great for the club , as lpool are a gobal brand and should increase ground capicity to 70 or 80 thousand ,but as i said newcastle have proved this season a team can be built and its not all about big money transfers , think your manager has done great and i for one will be cheering you on to get that 4th spot, goodluck..............lfc

To be fair, its the other way too- a lot of Toon fans are still bitter about some of Kennys decisions when he was managing up there, including him bringing in an ageing John Barnes and getting rid of some top quality players.

But personally I like the way Newcastle play, and they're my second club.
I've been visiting the town every few weeks for the last year or so, and I have to say the people up there are brilliant too. They treat you like one of their own no matter where you're from.

will the team wear the new kit for the final ?

15 Apr 2012 08:44:21
The Carling Cup triumph and the FA Cup Final are the cause of the poor league form. We don't have the squad to fight on three fronts. If we can win the FA Cup that will enable Kenny to focus on the league next year without critics carping about lack of trophies. Watch next yr the cup teams will be "weakened" and the league position a lot better.

A wise and wizened sage.

You have made a very good point there, the team and management signalled there intent when we played Exeter City in the second round of the Carling Cup. Next year we will probably play more of the youngsters in the Carling and F.A Cups, while the first team squad focuses on the League and a quality european run. With the Europa tho i would mix it up a lot tho, first teamers and reserves. I would keep carra, bellamy, spearing, adam, to play all the europa games with some of the youngsters like wisdom, suso, adorjan, flanno, robinson, coady, sterling just for the experiences.

Mourinho for manager? If FSG are not into controversy the answer has to be no. He would be a nightmare when it comes to PR. He'd diminish their 'asset' and he'd leave Liverpool like most clubs he's left, squabbling. That's not needed again. They need someone good and non controversial. If FSG appoint the ex Barcelona DOF then that for me indicates that they think that Barcelona are the blueprint to follow. That to me would point to Guardiola as the man they want. As is known Borrell and Segura individuals responsible in part for Barca's present success with 'homegrown' players they coached are a fundamental part of Liverpool's coaching staff now. I wouldn't be surprised if FSG are prepared to wait for Gaurdiola.

Guardiola wud be a dream come true.

They'll have to wait an awfully long time for Pep. Mourinho certainly isn't the answer, he may achieve some short term goals but he has no interest for youth development or long term gain.

Papa G

Guardiola has a rolling one year contract with Barcelona. He will leave them soon. He (or his wife) said recently it is aging him.

He will almost certainly come to EPL when he leaves Barca. The owners are on top of it, I am sure.

I don't think Carroll is a number 9 material for our club. A decent squad player maybe but definitely not a player to play alongside the likes of Suarez and Gerrad. We desperately need some quality in our squad or we won't be able to compete with the likes of Manchester clubs, Chelsea and even Tottenham. Setting apart Gerrad (who is also not playing good) and Suarez where do you guys think we have quality..?
These clubs have the likes of Rooney Nani Young Valencia Giggs Scholes Bale Modric Van der Vart, Aguero Silva Toure Nasri Mata and pardon me but Torres is not finished yet. He will come back faster and stronger..

My point is if we want to challenge for title or even the fourth spot we need a lot more quality in our squad..

Musicnation YNWA

Stop moaning and support your team no wonder he's playing bad 1 cup another final ? what does it take to please reds ? would you swap with newcastle 's position

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about do you....you Carroll haters do my f**king head in!

The Carroll & Suarez partnership is starting to shine and will be great for us for years to come! So instead of keep putting him down why don't you start supporting him for a change!!!

It's the midfield that is not working because there is no balance!

Carroll's improved form is the tip of a very large iceberg imo. It's clear to me that he has the attributes to be a top premier league centre forward, should he want it enough (which I think is the bigger issue i.e. work hard for proper top football career v's make enough money whilst enjoying lots of 'me time'?)

I think it's unquestionable that an in-form and fired-up AC would be a great asset for any team.

The Squirrel

Drogba has been succesful at Chelsea and Andy Carroll's style is not a million miles away from his.

Just because Andy has a different style to the other players you have mentioned doesn't mean he won't be a success.

Final third Regains:
So affording to stats. This is our strongest team. I've been reading Moneyball Statistics and Damien Comolli and Guardian article. This stat about final third regains (FTR)

Having read the above theory that the target for FTRs is twelve per match, I was disappointed to see that Liverpool have yet to achieve that at all this season (the 0-0 draw at Anfield with Tottenham Hotspur saw this season's best performance on this metric, with nine). The Reds' average of 3.31 per match also seemed hugely underwhelming.

Until I looked up the figures for the rest of the Premier League that is; whilst a long way short of the supposed figure of twelve required to potentially win a game, it turns out that Liverpool have the highest number of FTRs per match in the division.

"At Liverpool Comolli has relied more heavily on the so-called "Moneyball philosophy" (which, irritatingly, has also infiltrated my club), which argues, among other things, that a team that wins more than 40 headers, or crosses the ball more than 30 times or makes 12 regains in the final third, will nearly always win".

perhaps twelve FTRs is a much harder target to achieve per match than thirty crosses or forty headers, but it certainly appears to be a statistic of interest to Comolli as the Reds are currently the best team at it.

___________(???)

Luis Suarez
Dowing_Adam__Gerrard_Bellamy

Enrique__Skrtel_Agger_Kelly

___________Renia

Crossing the Ball:

It's clear that Liverpool have been crossing more during this season than in the previous three years, average figure per game has been 30.3,

From the previous four seasons of Premier League football, only the Manchester United team of 2009/10 crossed the ball more than this year's Liverpool side, and only 0.1 times more per game at that, for a manager to have seen an almost 50% increase in the number of crosses per game is clear numerical evidence of a radical switch in how his team plays.

So this team should intercept the ball more and cross the ball more than any other. The big question mark remains over the player playing at sole striker up front. We need to find someone who can convert the crosses into goals.

Final third Regains may be all well and good, but isn't it a sign of pressing game. barcelona and Man utd to some extent try to close press the ball in order to get FTR

Good post thanks for the info. I watched Moneyball last night interestingly enough and my over riding feeling toasted this, is it won't win u anything in footy.

While I'm no baseball fan the game calls for specialists at certain areas. They play in certain zones which eliminates a lot of varability in the calculations. Adam for example may have excellent stats however covers a lot of ground and would be pivotal in that midfield position. The likes of opposition formation, cofidencs, how quickly a team presses changes these calcs.

Footy I believe is a very unique game, things happen and change so regularly that it means it can't be 'tracked'.

Just my thoughts anyway.

Heart goes out to the familys of the 96 today.

Regarding above when shankly was asked by a foreign reporter what his tactics were . shanks replied its quite simple . WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL WE ALL ATTACK AND WHEN WE DONT HAVE THE BALL WE ALL DEFEND . this rule will still apply in a billion years time . thats the game of football summed up in one sentence . just a side issue people need to see sunday mirror picture of carrolls winner afro head has tried to tug of war him this picture needs to seen by all refs no wonder he hasnt had a decision all season . i didnt know he has been fouled like this every game.

The playing style improved a lot under Kenny but lack of goals and thus favorable results has put our team under immense lot of pressure. We desperately need a technically gifted and efficient goal scorer because if we get one Suarez will provide him with tonnes of opportunities. Carroll isn't fast and mobile enough to play alongside Suarez.. A pacey and tricky winger will also be a welcome relief. A backup CDM because all can see how our season went down after Lucas injury. And most of all a major overhaul in coaching staff. I have little complaints with Kenny too but i believe if we strengthen our team in summer with quality then he will much better.
My two cents..
Please don't abuse if you don't agree..!!

I think we will all have to agree, it is obvious Liverpool have no hope in the Final. Two time FA Cup Final, LOSER, Tim Cahill has passed verdict on our chances and dismiised any chance of a win, so it must be true.

What a t**t he is, not to mention a sore LOSER. He says we scored 2 goals from Evertons mistakes. Did they not score from our mistake? Remind me Cahill when you last won anything more than a game of cards on the way home on the LOSERS bus. Have some dignity ands just admit that you were not good enough. You say that LFC have a lot of work to do... agreed... I think you Toffees have reached your peak and can't stand the height, the only way for you now is down down down. Enjoy the ride Bye Bye.

Cahill is soooo jealous....and they wonder why we call them the bitters ?
Tel 1949

So bitter, he also says that some decisions didn't go their way. I can't really think of any significant ones. The dodgiest of all was in their favour for the 'just' offside goal.

This 1 is 4 macca. is it possible dalglish said carroll and co were his signings so they wudnt lose confidence or the media going on about it? it wud explain why they sacked comolli.

Our signings were Dalglish's choice but the negotiated transfer fees was Comolli's responsability.
If we paid
10 mill - Carroll
10 mill - Henderson
10 mill - Downing
Then that would be a fair price and wouldn't of created the circus surrounding over price players.
Football is a business as well as a passion but the right men who negotiate these deals need to understand value and not pay over the odds regardless wether they get the player or not.

Great result today, but why did agger start on the left? Drop carra. Hendo played a lot of the match in the left? Why? Bellamy changed the game. Confusing.

Aldo's tash

We won doing that didn't we?

MIKEY

Only reason I can see to having Agger on the left would be that his quality in the final third is better than Jose's. Jose has the pace and the strength to get up and down that wing all day but his final ball tends to let him down... Daniel Agger is a center back with an amazing skill set to be honest and he's better at helping organize the back four.

Hendo got switched mainly to allow Downing to run at Baines... which worked quite well to be honest. He should have gotten an assist.

And I think we'd all like Craig to play every minute of every game but we have to be realistic with his fitness.

Our 2nd half formation and tactics were great, and Kenny realized Bellamy could get us the win and put him on. What more could you ask from the King?

Sorry forgot to sign..

Henderson played a lot better on the left than he did on the right

Exactly, MIKEY.

I think agger played at left back for defending set pieces it is quite obvious, they have a big team with good delivery. Also we made our own set pieces more dangerous

Still don't agree with Enrique not playing today, drop carra . Why was hendo on the left? Look what Bellamy did? .. Good result though boys.

Aldos

Was he injured

Have you not been watching his performances over the last few weeks? Or is it that you watched him training this week and considered that he'd sufficiently recovered from his run of bad form?

Moot points. We're in the final.

Let's enjoy yesterday and pay our respects today.

The Squirrel

You still dont agree with Enrique not playing despite a wonderful win? Just because you dont agree, do you really think anyone cares ?

We won a semi final for christs sake and all your interested in is that you thought Carra shouldnt have played instead of Enrique. Kenny is our manager and he knows what he has to do to win at Wembley, try supporting him for once.

This post really annoys me, you have an overinflated opinion of just how much tou really know about football dear chap.

We play football to win, especially against everton in a semi final. We won, and were in a SECOND final in Kenny first full season.

Get over it and stop worrying about the fact that Kennys opinion on team selection doesnt quite match yours

a question for ed001, I was reading the discussion earlier about the owners questioning KK about maxi and all that. Is this normal for owners to get involved in footballing decisions? If they have never been football managers before should they really get involved? I don't want to become like abramovich when he gets involved and it always ends up bad. thankyou
hibsylfc {Ed001's Note - owners have always got involved, more so when things are going badly, less so when things go well. It is nothing new mate, don't worry.}

I feel more reassured now, I was starting to worry. Thanks
Hibsylfc

On the subject of owners questioning kenny about maxi.
it was the same question every Liverpool fans around the world has asked themselves recently. Why is a man who has scored 10 goals in 20 games not playing while a man who has only scored 10 goals in 50 games is.
And maxi will be asking himself the same question too, probably why he will leave in the summer. Andy Carroll is working hard, I beleive he is feeding on scraps most of the time.
His killing zone is 7" of the ground in the 6 yard box, plenty of pace on the ball and he will have many more goal scoring opportunities.
So often he is making little one two passes on the half way line and losses procession or can't keep up with the play, he is not built for speed.
I hope we invest in proper wingers who can provide the right crosses, our players always look for a low pass into the box or shotot when their around the edge of the 18 yard box.
Suarez is the worst or this as he never looks for Carroll as if he has so little faith in him. I hope now that andy has two in two that his confidence will improve so will that of his team mates. They now know where to put the ball if they want him to era p the benefits.
The manager has tinkered to much this season, Carroll has not played every minute of every game not even close. Had he played more often his goal tally would surely have been better.
I hope he is now on his way to a success full career at Anfield.

Eds,
we really just have one player who can make things happen and go past one, two or three man - Luis Suarez.
Other teams in the prem have more, for example ManUtd: Rooney, Valencia, Nani, Young

Do you think we will look for a "special" player in the summer who is technically gifted and can change things and turn matches around? {Ed001's Note - I certainly hope so, but those players are difficult to find.}

Raheem Sterling is one which will be one of the greatest hopefully gets more games next season
