Was a challenge! Had plenty of time to text this mrs during recording haha.

15 Jan 2016 00:32:09
Good to hear Harry though - he comes across better than his written words.

15 Jan 2016 02:51:32
Haha. Yeah, I feel like Harry was talking for about 70% of the time.

Still, great podcast. Banter.

14 Jan 2016 20:47:12
Hiya Ed, first timer here. Great work by the way.

These are not rumours but what I think would be good deals/ ideas;
I've just seen the Caulker loan deal and I think it makes sense that we are not going to panic buy and paying over the odds for a defender, but instead wait for the summer when more long term targets may be more available.

I think other transfer deals that would improve our team would be (buy a midfielder) Now Jonjo Shelvey has join NUFC surely Cheick Tiote must be on his way out and he would be a better replace for Allen who must be leaving in the summer. I'm not sure what his fitness is like as he has been on the treatment table for a while.

Striker wise: At present we can't get DS fit enough to play more than 3 games in a role. I would love to see get Javier Hernandez. I seen that there's lots of interest in him from other clubs, He had movement and is a great finisher.

Gk wise; stick with SM and extend his contract so that we can get a better fee for him in the summer when go for long term targets such as Butland etc.

What do think?

Believable0 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - I suspect Tiote is heading for China. Hernandez is not of interest and Liverpool has neither the space nor the money to make such signings right now. Butland won't be moving in January but clubs will look at him for the summer.}

14 Jan 2016 21:59:20
Money will be found though Ed.

{Ed002's Note - Ok Chris - then Tiote and Hernandez are arriving if you say.}

14 Jan 2016 23:15:52
Surely money has already been found and spent in recalling all these loanees and paying their wages.

15 Jan 2016 02:01:46
Can anyone please tell me where to find money - wouldn't mind a bit myself.

{Ed007's Note - Money won't make you happy dude, it just makes the misery more bearable.}

15 Jan 2016 03:53:55
Haha, will try that line with my wife - or perhaps not!

Was in Cape Town over Xmas (incredible place) and did a township tour and you're right, money and happiness aren't that closely related - kids were so happy kicking around a self made football made from plastic bags and litter and glass all over the place with no shoes. most of us are very lucky indeed.

I bet Yaya Toure was proper jealous of Emre Can's birthday cake it looked delicious.

14 Jan 2016 22:15:49
It has brought shame to England!

14 Jan 2016 20:01:36
I'm just wondering how our long term injured players are getting on . does anybody have any Joe Gomez or Ings news?

Ta.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

14 Jan 2016 20:05:52
Guess what they've both had a miracle cure and will be back playing before the end of the season. Oh no they're both still injured until the season ends and pre season starts.

14 Jan 2016 21:52:53
Anything on this Square Tomato?

14 Jan 2016 22:47:48
Samantha wrong time of the month is it!?

14 Jan 2016 16:35:34
Would you start caulker against United?
They will be trying to exploit our weakness at corners and in the air so makes sense sticking the big lad in defence, also I would instruct migs to stick someone at each post when defending corners as well.

Believable5 Unbelievable5

14 Jan 2016 17:50:35
Sakho is obviously first choice and I think Kolo did okay against Arsenal considering he had really an awful lot of protection from midfield and a clown behind him.

So no.

14 Jan 2016 18:02:43
We'll surely to god that's a hate crime if true
Up the pool
Jft96.

14 Jan 2016 18:07:09
The only scenario for a caulker inclusion is if Van Gauling decides to go route one Fellaini. He would be an excellent foil for that approach.

14 Jan 2016 19:23:21
Well let's assume van gall has no creativity and will use fellaini against us.

14 Jan 2016 20:00:54
I am a big fan of Sakho but am not sure he is the best solution against United in his current form. He had a poor game yesterday, his head game was never amazing and we will need someone tall with Fellaini, and they have some very quick players and work a lot with crossing. Whether Caulker is the answer or not I am not sure.

14 Jan 2016 20:56:19
Sakho, great guy, does his bit for the community / charity - absolute champ, but I am not a fan of him as a footballer, he is decent at a push but should not be first choice, he looks shaky on the ball, has turni g circle of thge team bus and doesn't win headers all the time. That said, I can't help but like him, i like his warrior likje attitude / spirit but just don't think he should be first choice.

14 Jan 2016 21:03:28
Not sure that Kolo can mange two games so close together, so maybe an opportunity for Caulker.

14 Jan 2016 20:20:57
I'd save Caulker to go up front if we need him. Honestly think kolo will do better against Rooney though, seems to be hitting a bit of form, and kolo will have a better chance of stopping him.

14 Jan 2016 21:24:53
Toure needs a run of games at his age to keep the legs going.

He's got the experience and class when fit.

Just keep him in the team.

14 Jan 2016 17:57:08
Just play ward and people will stop trying to exploit the defencive problems as they will settle down, with a competant keeper in the net.

14 Jan 2016 21:57:13
Hope sideshow bob is nowhere near the starting line up. the past 2 games he's started we've lost!

14 Jan 2016 22:02:08
As much as I like him I thought toure was poor v Arsenal. if he does start Sunday hopefully it was more he was just a bit rusty then poor.

14 Jan 2016 22:29:51
I don't think Toure can manage two tough games, so it has to be Caulker.

14 Jan 2016 23:16:42
Caulker will score the winner on Sunday.

14 Jan 2016 16:31:22
Evening all, just wanted to draw peoples attention to the story about a page on Facebook moking the Hillsborough victims, and Facebooks refusal to ban the page. Could I urge all the Facebook users on this site to complain about this and refuse to use Facebook and/ or threaten to close your accounts until they take this page down. Thank you!

{Ed002's Note - Waro, is there a link that you can provide? I will see if we can put some pressure on tomorrow.}

14 Jan 2016 18:10:21
Shame I don't have an account but agree with the intention.

14 Jan 2016 18:15:37
Sorry for the late reply ed002, I read the story in the Liverpool echo and I'm not on Facebook, but I'll ask around a few friends to see if they can sort that out for me, or maybe if one of the regular posters on here can maybe get there hands on a link. Thanks for the reply and potentially driving this forward. Top guy.

14 Jan 2016 18:50:18
Can't find the group mate, I find the best approach to these groups/ trolls is just to ignore it. The reaction is what they're after.

14 Jan 2016 19:00:59
I couldn't find it anywhere on facebook.

Very sad uneducated people.

14 Jan 2016 19:43:43
I think it's been removed now from what I've read.

14 Jan 2016 22:30:42
Top stuff Ed002.

14 Jan 2016 16:08:35
As a few people are mentioning our need for a winger i thought i would mention one that i think would give us a different dimension. Jefferson Montero has roasted quite a few full backs this season but is playing in a poor side who may well be in the champoinship next season.

Hi Eds, with the announcement of the Real Madrid and Athletico impending transfer embargoes, are there any players LFC maybe able to get on loan or permanent deals? Thinking Benzema for example.

cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

{Ed002's Note - It is nothing to do with Liverpool You are on the wrong page.}.

14 Jan 2016 17:58:18
Surely they would want to keep there players as there 'banned' from bringing players in.

14 Jan 2016 15:11:54
Hi Eds, Have we actually declared an interest to RM in Martin Ødegaard or is this nonsense?

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - You need to ask questions on the Real Madrid page about their children.}

14 Jan 2016 17:58:56
Recycled? He was at melwood last year training, as he did a lot at other places but chose nadrid.

14 Jan 2016 14:51:59
Hi ed's and fellow posters,

Not sure if this is already available. If not please evaluate this request if feasible.

The live chat page is open only during matches and that is perfect.

If possible can we have the page with all comments in read-only mode for view later?

It would make for interesting reading later for all fans.

What say folks?

Cheers
samikewell.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - that is something we intended to do originally, I will have to check with Ed033 when it will be up and ready.}

14 Jan 2016 15:41:57
Thank you Ed01.

14 Jan 2016 20:04:14
I think a one hour opening of chat a day would be a good idea too.

It would also lessen the work load of the eds too?

{Ed001's Note - it is much harder work doing the live chat mate, plus it costs money to do as it takes up more bandwidth.}

14 Jan 2016 14:44:39
Question Eds/ Reds, I am hoping someone can help with?

Am I right in thinking Ward cannot play the replay against Exerter as he wasn't registered in our books for the original game?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Yes - use the search engine or read the posts.}

14 Jan 2016 14:55:43
Yes your correct mate.

14 Jan 2016 15:40:06
Thanks Ed/ Itsonlybanter

Sorry Ed didn't realise it had been covered (but i suppose that is what the search engine is for :) )

14 Jan 2016 13:53:47
Genuinely think that we should literally just train corners this week. Yeah do the normal tactical work, but on the pitch, just practise taking, attacking and defending them. Teams are obviously targetting us that way, and it's so far behind the rest of our game. I'd like to see hendo taking them and Moreno or hendo again from the other side. We need that man at the front of the six yard box and someone helping mignolet clear space. I'd also like to see us leave someone like Ibe up front when we do defend so we have a slight chance of retaining possession, we are just as vulnerable after the clearance with the long ball back into the box.

Believable7 Unbelievable3

14 Jan 2016 14:27:51
Hendo was taking our corners at the beginning of the season when Brenda was still here and he was terrible. Smith would be the best in my opinion but he would need to be playing then.

14 Jan 2016 14:34:02
Couldn't agree more Fencey, I sit behind the goal to the right, so could clearly see the defensive, basic errors for Arsenal's first two goals.

We have to be one of the worst teams at taking corners, they either can't beat the first man or are floated over making it easy for the opposing defence to clear or the keeper to catch.

Why we don't whip a ball in is beyond me!

14 Jan 2016 14:40:16
I agree we need to work on them though. Defensively we give so much ground at corners but also all dead ball situations. I just think we have better deliverers than Hendo.

14 Jan 2016 14:46:34
We've always been bad at corners, as far back as I can remember!

14 Jan 2016 14:58:05
We would need to bring in someone to take them for defensive training, otherwise it would be a waste.

14 Jan 2016 15:35:25
Smith would be a good shout. We are dire at corners. But just crossing we don't seem to be great at!

14 Jan 2016 16:36:58
It is depressing that a team of pros who are paid thousands cannot kick a dead ball into a box with relative ease. I could do it, why can't they? In reality they should all be capable but aren't.

14 Jan 2016 16:40:58
Kloppo said you can train and do all the organisational stuff in the world but if the players switch off, like last night, mistakes will happen.
A dominant goal keeper does not allow the players to switch off when defending a set piece. They berate the defenders and make sure they are on alert.

14 Jan 2016 17:23:50
We need to stick somebody at front post who can actually head the ball, if we do that it would at least stop the balls like Arsenal scored from.

14 Jan 2016 21:08:32
Spot on, Ron. We currently have NO reliable goalkeeper at the club anymore which is why we will continue to struggle already especially with our poor organization at defending set pieces. No players on the post, no one tracking players, a GK that can't be trusted, the lot. This is why I still think we got screwed vs Arsenal. They were there for the taking and we let them off the hook due to the usual suspects making mistakes and our chronic inability to defend set pieces. This will continue to haunt us till the summer and cost us any chance of of a top four place.

14 Jan 2016 20:24:50
Bring in someone to take corners, what?! That's the point of practising it haha.
Hendo has improved his delivery from set plays and open plays, I'm sure he could do the same from corners.

14 Jan 2016 20:58:36
seems so simple have a man on the posts at corners would probably have a few more points in the league.

14 Jan 2016 13:16:04
Is it just me or, has Joe Allen playing a lot better under Klopp than previously under Rodgers? I thought he was excellent against Southampton in the league cup and very solid against Stoke in the same competition to the point that I was surprised when he was substituted. He has always been tidy in possession and I would take that right now as opposed to some careless and sloppy passing by Milner, Can and Lallana. I know he will not be in the running to take Lallana's place in the side, but I think the other two should be in danger of losing their place to Pirlo, sorry, I mean Joe Allen.

Believable14 Unbelievable2

14 Jan 2016 14:32:44
All of have improved under Klopp. I still don't think he's the answer. I don't think we have our Klopp midfield staff yet. Still imbalanced and weak in defence. I'm not sure we have the members in midfield for top four challenge yet. Miliner, Allen and Lucas aren't good enough in my opinion. Can needs a partner for me.

14 Jan 2016 14:33:35
I think he's only really capable In a midfield three. I also think he has had some good perform ads for us, but he doesn't produce enough. When we are playing well, he does help us tick over, keeps the ball moving and pushes us on. When we are not he can be anonymous. That's the problem with him for me, he just doesn't have enough in his game all round, he can help us play better, but he can't influence the game.

14 Jan 2016 14:41:54
Fencey you said it a dammed site better than me lol.

14 Jan 2016 16:30:44
and when do milner and lallana ever influence the game. what you said fencey could be said of anyone. they have all had shockers.

14 Jan 2016 16:41:29
He's improved, but that's not difficult.

14 Jan 2016 17:00:45
It is a positive situation as his performances of late will hopefully increase his value should he be sold or if consistent will merit a place in the team/ squad. I think he is a player that suits some games/ opponents better than others.

14 Jan 2016 13:14:53
The problem with the corners is the delivery, not the players in the box. The most effective corner is whipped with pace and relatively low. Even if a few get cleared front post and a few sail way over the the back post, our odds of scoring would be increased by the remaining good, pacey deliveries into dangerous areas. That's why we scored more from corners when Gerrard/ Suarez took them. In 13/ 14 season I remember Skrtl bagging about 7 or 8 goals, due to the delivery of Suarez.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 21:09:33
And SG.

14 Jan 2016 12:49:15
I made a similar post a while ago and Ed1 got very angry with me but this deserves a mention. Benteke is our Supersub.

He's come off the bench 6 times this season for a grand total of 178 minutes. In those appearances he's scored three goals and made two assists, that's a goal every 59 minutes and involved in a goal every 36 minutes. In three of the 6 appearances his contributions have improved the result of the game (two draws into wins, one loss to a draw) .

He looks like a donkey but you can't argue he isn't having an impact. Maybe £32M is too much for an impact sub but if he keeps this up he's worth his place in the squad.

Believable1 Unbelievable4

{Ed001's Note - angry? It is those kind of idiotic statements that annoy me more than the supersub crap. He had no impact on the game last night, other than that header. If that is what you call a 'supersub' than you have totally different ideas of what that entails. Mediocrity is, it seems, what you aspire to.}

14 Jan 2016 13:16:53
Ed1, I was trying to be lighthearted : (

My point still stands though. He may have only done that header but that header resulted in an extra point, isn't that enough? Does his contribution need to involve intricate passing and movement to be worthwhile?

He keeps coming on and doing nothing except score or assist. It seems the poor guy can't win.

{Ed001's Note - if he had come on and performed to the level he is capable of, that would be enough. Instead he ambles about providing very little and that is simply not good enough. Imagine what he could add if he actually broke sweat? If he can do this while sauntering round doing nothing, he could have ended up winning us the game by simply making a real effort.

He can win, but he needs to try to do so.}

14 Jan 2016 13:44:34
I think he is good as an impact sub, purely for his Ariel ability. However he still is lazy, and when you come on with 30 mins to go, is winning a couple headers good enough? If we wanted that we may as well have gone a guy with less natural ability, but more work rate, and equally good in the air, and probably saved about £20 million quid. I do think the big guy is very useful for the last 20 if we need a goal, most teams have one to throw on, or some start them; but benteke being a sub as much as he is, we may as well have stuck with lambert. He's as good a finisher, he cares so much more; and although not as quick, will cause as many problems as benteke has.

14 Jan 2016 15:20:40
Had we not paid the amount we did for him, he'd be a solid signing due to his goals and assists at vital times. He'll never live up to his price tag, but with a healthy studge playing with Firmino up top he'll always provide another dimension off the bench. Question is, is that the role he wants? Because that is what his attitude is getting him.

14 Jan 2016 15:45:56
Fencey, the difference is that Lambert had no impact, Benteke has. This is why I struggle with people's attitude to him, he's not a Ballotelli or Lambert, he's a guy who's made a significant contribution to our points tally. How he's done that seems less important to me than the fact that he has done that.

14 Jan 2016 15:52:01
Manahawkin, I just looked up your home, I want to live there! To me yours is the most sensible opinion expressed on Benteke so far.

14 Jan 2016 16:26:18
When Ibe made a really good run late in the game and crossed the ball in a perfect poachers position, benteke was at the edge of the box. And then even had the nerve to fuss at Ibe. Graeme Le saux who commentates for the USA viewers was FUMING. He butchered benteke for that attitude, and I'm glad he did.

14 Jan 2016 18:09:17
Muscatred, you're welcome to visit in the states anytime you'd like. I agree with you, he is frustrating to watch but you can't compare him to Lambert, Balo, etc. because he has made a contribution, just not a 34 million dollar one. TjRed I heard the same thing, it was ridiculous, get in the box, Klopp didn't sub you in to stand at the top of the box and take shots.

14 Jan 2016 21:18:40
TJ, I was going to post the same thing. Benteke did absolutely nothing last night. The header? So what? As Ed said, had he put himself about the way JA did, he would have scored earlier and had a chance to win the game. Muscat, your bar for success for a player is severely low. I heard the very same explanations used to support Andy Carroll being here whereas we all knew his purchase was a huge blunder. Benteke has all the ability in the world but just couldn't be arsed to work hard whereas, he used to do that at Villa. He's lucky that Ings, Origi and Studge are injured if not, he wouldn't even make the stands.

14 Jan 2016 21:06:18
I think the gaffer has marked his card? can't see no future for him hear or sturridge too. Crikey a gaffer with balls.

14 Jan 2016 14:24:41
actually buzzing for this podcast now haha.

14 Jan 2016 22:20:36
Any ideas when it will be uploaded?

14 Jan 2016 11:44:09
Corners are a big issue for us both defending and attacking.

From attacking point of view I think the main issue is that our big tall players have absolutely no idea how to attack a ball.

Our corners are played in (if they aren't played short! ) and our big men all seem to be standing directly under it, making it a straight fight between attackers and defenders and also making it much easier for the keeper.

We need our big men to be attacking the ball from deep, taking a chance and jumping on the run, who cares if you aren't anywhere near it and look like a fool at least you've got a run on the defender and given yourself a shot.

Historically the best i have ever seen this done was at Chelsea, with Terry, Drogba, Ballack, Ivanovic etc etc all looking to get across their man and attack the ball.

I don't know whether it is an issue of the players starting position being too close to the keeper, whether they are timing runs too early or whether the ball is coming in to slowly, but something needs to be done to give us at least a shot of getting on the end of it.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

14 Jan 2016 12:14:18
It'd help if we could get the ball past the 1st defender.

14 Jan 2016 12:24:20
The little chip floating balls Ibe was doing last night where utter crap! need power and precision balls going into the box so it does beat the first man.

14 Jan 2016 12:57:01
I think the 2 are linked. Because we are crap at taking corners, our defence never gets to practice defending against them!

Ibe has to learn to put in the early ball sometimes. His insistence on always dribbling makes him easy to defend against. He has to learn to vary it. Same could be said for Clyne and Marino.

14 Jan 2016 11:41:17
Can I just say, what a finish by Allen. In the last minute, came on as a sub, sleet in his face and under pressure from the defender. Very well executed and hats off to him.

Believable12 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 11:56:43
Thought he's actually been very good when played the last few games and looks a useful squad player certainly. For me what I've noticed recently which is his biggest contribution is he's the only midfielder bar Henderson and occasionally can that actually runs beyond the forward line trying to create space. It's been lacking incredibly in a lot of our games when hendo is missing this season.

14 Jan 2016 12:31:16
Makes you wonder whether he was a little too 'comfortable' under Rodgers and whether Klopp coming in has been a wake up call for him.

14 Jan 2016 12:57:54
Growing a beard seems to have matured his play.

14 Jan 2016 16:35:16
or makes you wonder whether rodgers was just bollocks.

14 Jan 2016 16:54:37
Rodgers played him as a DM a lot of the time, he's not a DM to me at all!

13 Jan 2016 23:16:53
Don't understand why on corners non of our defenders take away the opposition from standing on Mingolet and even at times surrounding him, it's happening every game. At times tonight Mingolet had Mertasaker and Giroud blocking his vision of the corner and not letting him get to the ball.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 10:38:21
As a fan you're only allowed to slate Migs on here 18&5. It has nothing to do with every other playing bad, every goal we concede is Migs fault. FACT.

14 Jan 2016 11:22:33
Why isn't migs either a yelling at every player we have telling them what needs to happen. few players have a better view of what happens on a football pitch than a keeper. Or b just run through the middle of them if they catch you or block you in anyway you'll get a free simple as. if migs wasn't a bottler I don't think crowding would or should be a problem.
I will give that we seem very poor at heading the ball in general. I would like to see a part zonal implemented where are three biggest players are left free one front middle and back and just tell them attack the ball no matter where it is. think this might give us some sort of chance?

14 Jan 2016 11:42:34
Just to add there was one good moment for migs when we were stretched where he read ozils early cross and made a great run and punch. you need a keeper able to dominate situations like this and would have prevented the corner for the second goal and a lot of pressure throughout the match if he had this.

14 Jan 2016 12:32:10
And nearly took the head of Ramsey! great goalkeeping there. It's what a keeper should do, win the ball at all costs.

14 Jan 2016 11:44:04
I don't rate Mingolet at all but in the case of him getting no protection at corners I think he could be helped. It does seem it is an instruction by Klopp, I presume that the defenders don't do it. Seems strange to me not to have someone to take the opposition away from our keeper.

14 Jan 2016 16:37:31
shane, i thought migs could have read that faster, i really thought he wasnt going to make that punch.

14 Jan 2016 19:44:11
i wish we would have men on the posts when defending corners.

14 Jan 2016 10:04:09
I think the Caulker signing is basically the same as when we loaned Paul Jones. He will get the odd minor appearance but apart from that he will leave in the summer.

I'd like to see the likes of Ilori getting his fitness built up as the season goes on. If he was fully fit now it would have been the perfect opportunity for him to stake his claim.

Hopefully over coming months his fitness will build up and hopefully no injuries.

I also would like to see what Jurgen does with the he likes of Alberto and Markovic. Both may still have a future at the club under Klopp.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

14 Jan 2016 10:36:57
I think out of those 3 only Ilori has a slim chance of being involved in the future at LFC. We messed Markovic about, and Alberto was never given any proper opportunity either.

14 Jan 2016 12:05:32
So you think we messed about Alberto and Markovic too much for them to have a future at lfc, but Ilori might? He was messed around worse than anyone!

14 Jan 2016 12:14:15
I agre Ilori was messed about a lot, but the fact he is back with the club and klopp can have a good look at him in training might help, that is all I meant. All 3 have been treated unfairly in my eyes.

14 Jan 2016 12:17:54
Maybe he isn't as good as you want him to be?

14 Jan 2016 15:38:53
I think a lot of players were messed about i'm happy to have Illori back at pool if he wasn't playing for other teams, not sure how good he is. we bought him a few years ago and since then you don't know how much he's actually been able to grow/ mature.

Not sure how i feel on Alberto I haven't seen enough of him to comment

I like Marko and would love to see him back at pool given a chance on the wing.

14 Jan 2016 15:53:43
That's in part what I mean not many of us have watched Alberto whilst he's been loaned and didn't really play for us under Rodgers, so I think he should be given a pre season at least to prove himself under the new manager. I'm by no means saying he does have one but I think he warrants a chance. Same applies to Markovic although I would prefer to see home back this month. Seems to be doing well in Turkey and still only a kid.

I think Ilori needs to build his fitness and he could be on the bench as cover over next few months. If he stays injury free he could possibly break into the team or at least be back up.

CONCACAF Dismiss Match Fixing Claims While Arsenal Look To Make Signing Before The Weekend And More News

{Ed's Note - We have posted a new article entitled, CONCACAF Dismiss Match Fixing Claims While Arsenal Look To Make Signing Before The Weekend And More News

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 09:28:58
Hi All,

Got into work this morning and my boss had heard we've just signed someone this morning. Anyone have any ideas who it might be, might be referring to the paper talk regarding Matip, but wanted to check to see if anyone had heard anything? Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - He is teasing you as a gullible Liverpool fan - nothing happened overnight.}

14 Jan 2016 16:45:18
I think many people would believe someone signed if someone takes a minute out there day to tell them. his boss must be a plonker or maybe the boss is the gullible one by not checking his facts.

14 Jan 2016 08:53:47
Liverpool corners and set-pieces are always a prelude to a goal-kick for the opposition. Opposition corners and set-pieces are always dangerous to Liverpool as this is a recognised fact. What is galling about the last two goals from a corner is that they were both very poor crosses. The Exeter one was too high for anyone except the goalkeeper (! ) and the Arsenal one was too low. I know that Giroud got a touch but that was too slight to make any difference and it should have been stopped by the goalkeeper. Had there been any defenders by the posts both goals would have possibly (if not probably) been prevented. Last evening there were also far too many misplaced passes out of defence and against a great passing side like Arsenal it was very dangerous.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 10:41:21
Our corner taking was shocking last night, absolutely awful. There is no excuse for that at all - there must be someone who can clear the first man without it going for a throw in on the far side.

14 Jan 2016 08:33:22
Morning redmen,

With the games coming thick and fast here's your midweek loan update.

Its back to back defeats now for deportivo as they lost 3-0 at home to mirandes.
Alberto came on at half time whilst the score was 1-0 but couldn't change the game.

Hes back!
On the subs bench at least.
The infamous 'why always me' ballotelli was an unused sub as AC Milan won 2-1.

Fenerbache won 6-1 last night so its all smiles at Markovic's club.
Lazor came on as a half time sub when the score was 3-0 and helped fenerbache continue their fine form in the second half.

Its back to back defeats for canos and the brentford gang.
Brought on at the hour mark to try and change the game canos was unable to have an impact as Brentford lost 1-0 to league leaders boro.

And its back to back defeats for Norwich as wisdom was an unused substitute.
For those who question why we signed caulker instead of calling back wisdom, your question was answered last night.
Caulker has been signed to be a 90th minute battering ram, wisdom can't play this role

And that's your lot

All others either didn't play or didn't feature.

He can head a ball it's always a bonus.
Thanks for your updates as always.

13 Jan 2016 23:34:25
Ed2 just too warn you, twitter is beggining to heat up again with lfc want markovic back this window. So a heads up incase you get the same questions coming your way.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Thanks DR.}

14 Jan 2016 08:36:33
Hey Ed, just read we may want Markovic back. hahaha

I'd be happy to see him back myself rather than buying someone else in attacking mids, Ibe is looking a little tired as our only pacy wide man (although would also be very happy to see Ojo given a shot but obviously less reliable/ experienced)

I still think Markovic showed enough to believe he'll develop into something useful, we just overpaid and then stuffed up his development curve. think Klopp would be capable enough to put him on track again.

14 Jan 2016 15:41:10
Definitely overpaid for Marko but i think a lot of fans fancy seeing him play in a Klopp side. He seems to have enough technical ability.

14 Jan 2016 07:04:34
Yo ed001, what did you think of the tactic to bring Caulker forward, instead of sub on a specialist attacker like Teixiera? I've seen a select few moan about that- one even said it was farcical. farcical? Hardly.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I think more of the problem is that it is clear Benteke is not doing enough, so we needed to bring on a big man to do the job Benteke should have done. That worries me more than bringing on Caulker did. I personally think that game was crying out for Smith, as Moreno had the freedom of the left side and Smith's delivery from those areas is the best in our squad. Teixeira I would have brought on to take the set pieces, but, against Arsenal, big men are exactly what they struggle against, so I fully understand Klopp's thinking.

I would not have done it that way myself, but it worked, so you have to say well done to Klopp for getting it right.}

14 Jan 2016 07:48:10
Hard to call something farsicle when it delivers the intended result.

14 Jan 2016 07:56:20
Well from what I remember, Caulker didn't have anything to do with that goal, so maybe you couldn't say that the Caulker move to striker 'worked' to get the goal. But Klopp's sink-chucking tactic of playing hoofball with a big body in the box did work to get the goal. But, assuming Caulker was present in the box at the time of the goal, you could also credit the decision to push him forward for the goal, as his large presence would have preoccupied more Arsenal defenders and kept some away from Benteke.

Moreno's crossing unfortunately still is bloody shocking. I'm mystified by why so many players in our team are such poor crossers.

It was a great game but I feel pretty disappointed we didn't win. We made a brilliant start but shot ourselves in the foot really. Arsenal fans could say the same about themselves, but we had the first onus in the match. and the second.

14 Jan 2016 08:03:06
It was that idiot Jaimie Kanwar. I sometimes can't tell if he's just an idiot, or just a sensationalist attention-whore. He will always look for the most frivolous and insignificant things to rage about.

{Ed001's Note - I have an idea, don't take any notice of him and stop bringing his name up on here and his moronic comments. I have no interest in what some pretend fan has to say in order to hit-whore. He is just another fake jumping on the back of Liverpool's internet fans to earn himself some money off them. In the early days, all the fakes used to set up Liverpool sites because Liverpool sites were the most searched for and visited of all sports teams. We used to check all the google stats on search terms etc, and Liverpool were always right up there in the top 10, not another sports team made it in those days. Probably changed now I would think, with the likes of Real Madrid being top but it did bring in the conman like that fat thief on koptalk.}

14 Jan 2016 08:24:08
How long ago was this? That's very surprising, I'd have thought that Man Utd would be more popular. Maybe Liverpool has more genuine fans? In Australia I'm sure there's more Liverpool fans than United fans.

{Ed001's Note - 14 years ago when we first started. At that time United were dominating, so the fans probably didn't have the same intensity to wanting to discuss their team, rather than them not being there.}

14 Jan 2016 08:28:11
and yeah sorry about that name drop.

{Ed001's Note - it's ok, I know you weren't meaning to advertise him, I was just making a point, there is no reason to let him wind you up, just go to a different site. Life is too short to waste on people like him. Plus, each time you go there you are doing him a favour.....}

14 Jan 2016 09:01:48
Yeah true, it's weird how you have much less to talk about when your team is on fire year after year. There's no problems to dissect.

{Ed002's Note - To answer about where the most fans are:

For a while now the stats for fans are based, as you would expect, on the number of fans on social media and that helps provide the demographics for where those fans are based. Top 10 at the last time of asking found Liverpool at number 7 ahead of PSG, Manchester City and AC Milan. Liverpool were just behind Bayern Munich, with Arsenal and Chelsea ahead of them. There was then a significant leap to Manchester United, Real Madrid and, at number 1, Barcelona.

In terms of the demographics for the five Premier League clubs:

Manchester United has the most supporters in both India and China - and given the size of population in those countries it is not a surprise to see them so far ahead. Their support is growing in America.

Chelsea are the club with the most supporters most in mainland Europe, Asia, Middle East, Central America and South America. Their support is growing quickly in America and they will soon be well clear of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Arsenal are traditionally the most followed Premier League club in Canada and the USA and, very significantly, throughout Africa (except South Africa) but the USA support is moving rapidly away from Arsenal and toward Manchester United and, in particular, Chelsea.

Liverpool has the highest number of supporters of any club in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and is doing well in some parts of Asia.

Manchester City are not leading the way in any one market but are picking up new supporters faster than any other side. This is a reflection of their success.}

Yeah true, it's weird how you have much less to talk about when your team is on fire year after year. There's no problems to dissect.

14 Jan 2016 10:30:04
Thanks Ed2

I would have assumed Liverpool would have picked up quite a bit more visibility during 13/ 14 challenge and perhaps also when Klopp came on board. Any figures that would suggest we've done better around either of these events?

I live overseas and it does seem most youngsters follow whoever won the most in last 2-3 years (as you probably would too if following a league on other side of the world) so I think it's critical we get back in the top 4 regularly with Klopp now and start to build a new legacy compared to relying on an increasingly distant past.

Appreciate the insight BTW - really interesting stuff.

{Ed002's Note - No, that really isn't how it will work. There might be a tiny bit of noise but taht would be it. I would not go on about any dynasty coming nor the impact of Klopp.}

14 Jan 2016 11:09:47
Yeah one season when you come second isn't going to make a noticeable difference in your fan base size.

14 Jan 2016 10:49:16
I don't believe that fan base estimations off social media followings represent the most true reflection of fan base sizes, and need to be looked at with some context. For example, Manchester City have 20M facebook likes. That is only 7 million less than Liverpool, but there is no way that Man City have already closed the gap that far on Liverpool's fan base- they couldn't even sell out a stadium in Australia with a 27000 capacity. Liverpool on the other hand sold out a stadium with 100000 capacity. I know we are the most supported club here, but I still believe that's way too much of a gap that the facebook like tally is not reflecting.

What it does reflect is that general football fans kind of join the bandwagon and click 'like' on on club pages that are recently successful, regardless of whether they follow them or not. The only thing generally stopping them from doing that is a strong rivalry. Another factor may be an affinity for another club with an underdog tag. As for myself, I also follow BVB, Bayern, PSG, Barca, Madrid, City, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa.

Even my mate who is a huge United fan also follows the City page. Bayern have around 7 million more facebook followers than Liverpool, but I find it pretty hard to believe that there are actually more genuine Bayern fans in this world than Liverpool fans. I daresay that their followers tally has shot through the roof past Liverpool's in the last couple of years, which coincides with their pretty recent ascent to super-team status. People are sheep and creatures of habit (I'm guilty of both here) and will just like any semi-appealing facebook page in front of them.

Another set of survey findings were published recently, and they found that United are the most followed in the world, followed by Liverpool, followed by Madrid, then Chelsea. This is the article about it:

Very interesting stuff Ed02 thanks mate!

14 Jan 2016 00:43:28
A question to Ed01, if you don't mind.

Similar to the previous question regarding Henderson. How would you assess Can as a player, in terms of his current performances and his potential?

I'm a little bit in between about him. I do like him. Sometimes he made me feel that he's a decent player, sometimes the opposite. I'm not putting the blame on him for the draw last night, but he frustrated me everytime he got the ball.

Thanks Ed.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - I like him, but he does need to move the ball on quicker at times and not always look to turn to create space, unless he is sure where the opponents are. At least in his own half. In the opposition half, I am happy if players take those kind of chances. I would also ask his team mates to tell him which side his man is on, when there is someone coming, so he can turn away rather than into them. Overall, his ability is excellent, he just needs to learn how to use it to best effect.

I actually think he was a big part of us getting the draw, in a good way, as his presence forced back Flamini. Flamini knew he had to cover for both Henderson and Can getting forward, so he had to be deeper to give him time to react, as Ramsey is always looking to get forward and leaves gaps.

Can is still young, he is still learning, being inconsistent and frustrating comes with the territory. You have to give him time to learn.}

14 Jan 2016 07:58:48
You're not alone there Haizan. I acknowledge Can's talent and potential, and I think he had a pretty good game, but farrrrrk me, his carelessness and sloppiness can make me scream at the tv!

14 Jan 2016 09:14:18
Appreciate your view Ed01. Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, it was interesting to read your thoughts.}

14 Jan 2016 03:24:12
Anyone else feel that our set pieces are wasted 99% of the time? ibe/ coutinho/ lallana/ Moreno/ hendo need to work massively on set piece delivery that or we need to sign someone who can swing in a decent corner

Corners and free kicks have been very very average.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 04:10:41
Bring Gerrard back.

14 Jan 2016 04:22:49
Agreed. why do I feel so scared when we concede a set piece yet so bored when we win one? Major problem for us at both ends.

We need a more dominant aerial presence at CB, a more commanding GK to control the box, and someone capable of whipping in dangerous crosses.

Perhaps Matip and Ward can help with the former, not sure I see someone obvious for the latter. Coutinho or perhaps even Brad Smith most likely to be able to step up?

14 Jan 2016 04:37:45
Our set pieces (especially corners) have been poor for years now. I can't believe managers haven't noted and improved on them.

14 Jan 2016 05:22:35
Slightly more than 99% I think.
Been this way for ages.

14 Jan 2016 05:55:55
They have been for a long time mate - we can neither use them effectively nor defend against them effectively - a massive achilles heel.

14 Jan 2016 06:32:30
Couldn't agree more. It's infuriating at times!

14 Jan 2016 09:03:09
Agree totally re set pieces, bit of a waste of time for us at present.

What baffles me at present is Migs. I appreciate we might have to "protect his value. " But if the rumours about a pay rise and a 5 year contract are true then that's crazy.

I hope Ward turns out to be decent for us - we need a decent keeper.

13 Jan 2016 23:05:45
Question for Ed001: do you think we will start Ward against Man United?

With goalkeepers they are usually given their chance after a slip-up from the first choice keeper so could this be Ward's chance?

It is a very big game though, would it be too much pressure maybe?

Thoughts?

Believable4 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I think he will hold him back from that one.}

14 Jan 2016 04:31:59
Agree Klopp will probably take the more conservative route on this - starting him in that match might be damaging for his career if makes any sort of mistake and would be under immense pressure! I'd love to see him play but my brain says start him against Norwich.

14 Jan 2016 06:34:33
I would love Ward to start against Man Utd. Migs' confidence must be shot at the moment with pretty much every pundit claiming 2 of the goals were his fault. Yes it will be massive pressure for Ward, but as Ed001 said in the podcast sometimes kids can come into the side and play without fear.

14 Jan 2016 08:31:38
It will be to much for the lad I think, I am not saying he wouldn`t raise his game he probably would just I don`t think is that stupid he will start against Exeter for is Anfield Debut and if he impresses I think he will start from there.

14 Jan 2016 08:52:10
Re ward I remember nearly 12 months ago- semi v cheksea- in the warm up- ward looked like the number 1- so much so I and others thought he was playing! Migs is a good shot stopper but the rest? ? We need another keeper! .

14 Jan 2016 08:59:10
I'd look the player in the eye and ask him how he feels.
If he's up for it then there is no reason to hold him back.

{Ed002's Note - The well trodden path to deciding who should play and who should not.}

14 Jan 2016 09:58:58
Not deciding who should play, just seeing if he is mentally ready or not.
Based on ability, he deserves his chance ahead of the other 2 clowns on our books.

{Ed002's Note - You might as well just grab him by the gonads and ask him to cough.}

14 Jan 2016 10:32:10
Priceless ed.

13 Jan 2016 23:53:41
I thought overall a lot of positives from this game. It was important to take something from it, and Allen's goal will give the guys some confidence. It was nice to score more than 1 goal for a change. Firmino showed at last why we bought him, we had a lot of possesion, kept on pressing, our passing was much better and we created many chances and kept on going until the end. Allen wasinvolved in a decisive goal in (his) second consectuive game. May well earned a new contract. A good assist from Benteke as well.

Negatives - defence and GK. I have to say though, without taking anything from our defensive and GKs errors, that the way we press in midfield with 2-3 players trying to intercept the ball every time an opposition player has the ball (Can is amazing in that bte - he is such a good pickpocketer), if the pressing players don't get the ball, they stay up and our defence is exposed. I don't complain, because when we do get the ball we can go at the opposition, but it is risky.

Saying all that I am a bit worried about Sakho's reaction time and quickness, and not for the first time. Ibe's decision making in the last third still not great.

But with Sturridge back (on the weekend? ) Couts and Origi not too far away, I think we have a lot of reasons for optimism. Top 4 may be lost but for the three cup competitions and the longer future we can be optimsitic.

Cracking game and proved a few points IMO

1) Benteke is a good impact sub but we shouldn't be Building our starting team around him, mobility upfront ties the whole thing together for this side.
2) Migs just isn't good enough
3) Hendo is key in midfield, great to have him back, such an engine in midfield

Can't wait for the weekend, hope we smash them.

14 Jan 2016 01:03:19
I agree. It was a good game and we played the way Klopp wants us to play. However, the two goals we gave up was the fault of the same repeat offenders as in Mingo. Getting beat at your near post and going to sleep on a corner is just unforgivable. Arsenal didn't have to break a sweat to score their goals. They just took advantage of our wayward passing in midfield atimes and our individual mistakes to pick us off. We don't have a GK anymore because the ones we have now are walking, talking mistakes. Must do better.

Zimbabwe that's all well and good and I happen to agree with you but as the eds have said more than once, Marko will want the transfer whether we want him to stay or not, too much damage done. I hope the eds are wrong but with the way he's been treat since his arrival I doubt it.

13 Jan 2016 23:45:58
I think we have a seriously good chance of getting 3 points from United. Van Gaal must have conceded to the pressure of boring football, definitely given more freedom to players but really didn't work.

If they come into the match in the same way they did at Newcastle they leave themselves so open at the back. Without getting so many bodies behind the ball the back 4 look seriously frail. Just goes to show how much they were relying on protection from midfield. I'm not saying we are stable at the back but we definitely have more attacking intent and perseverence and if Firmino has another stormer running at them we will cause them problems. We are going to come out of this game spirits high, where as United will not be at all happy with that result at the Toons.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2016 01:18:25
I love your optimism but with our GK who is a mistake waiting to happen in almost every game of late, we may just nick a point. I hop I'm wrong, tho.

14 Jan 2016 04:25:25
Yea, I really can't see Klopp going with Ward in this game either which is a shame. I suppose if he did take the gamble 1) if he did have a howler it would crush his confidence and really start him off with such a steep hill to climb and 2) the statement of intent in terms of Mignolet would be huge (not that I don't think he needs a kick up the arse) . With this contract offer and Klopp recent comments the press would have a field day!

I'm going to go for 3-1. If we nick one early it'll put the sh*ts up them and make things really hard. I think we need to come out guns blazing again and I would bring Lucas back in with Can for some extra protection. Just hope Hendo holds up as well, thought he was great today. I think he's vital to this team right now.
