About Rafa:
He did not waste the money, he made a profit of ~25m in transfers over the 5 years.
The only time he was allowed to get his number 1 targets was in his first 2 seasons, these:
Xabi Alonso, Garcia, Morientes, Josemi
in the first year, and:
Crouch, Reina, Sissoko, Mark Gonzalez, Scott Carson, Boudewijn Zenden
apart from Morientes , Gonzalez (Houllier deal) and Josemi, the rest did very well, and were good value for money
And before anyone mentions Nunez, he was free as part of M owen deal that liverpool had very little say in, and Nunez was sold a year later for 2m.
from 2006/ 07 season things changed, including owners and Rafa had to sell to buy , with the only exceptions being Torres and Mascherano, he wanted Maluoda he was given Pennant, he wanted D Alves, he had to settle for Arbeloa,
Barry was not to replace Alonso, when we paid for Masch he was told he had to sell , and selling Alonso for 20m and buying Barry for 12m would have been good business considering that Alonso did not have a good 2007/ 2008 season.
Keane was Rafas biggest mistake , he was stupid to let his ego rule him, but none of us really know how it was to be in his position having to work with the stupid board he was dealing with.

To the Soulman who wrote:
"If your going to slag of rafa please get your FACT
right."
"1. Arbeloa wanted to go back to spain FACT 1"

You call this a "FACT". So a player holds LFC to ransom and Rafa is blameless? Why did Rafa allow Arbeloa to run down his contract? If Arbeloa wanted to go back to Spain then he should have been sold sooner. He only had a year left on his contract when we sold him to Real (which was a crime). FACT.

"2.JOHNSON 18 MLL PORTSMOUTH OWED US 7/ 8 MLL
WICH WE WOULNT HAVE GOT BECAUSE THEY'VE GONE BUST. FACT 2."

That is False not Fact. We WOULD have got the £7M owed to us as it was due on 11th July 2009 as a final settlement in the Crouch deal. Portsmouth would have paid us £7M by selling Johnson to Chelsea (if we hadn't gone for him). Plus, Portsmouth went into Administration much later in December 2009.

"so johnson cost about 7 mll with arbeloas money and hes english."

Not true. Johnson cost £18M not £7M. A cost of a player is the value that he is sold for. That is £18M that could have been spent elsewhere.

"right now barry / alonso question rafa wanted barry to play on the left stevie in the middle keen behind nando so stevie would have played in alonsos place FACT 3."

False. Rafa wasn't even keen on Keane (excuse the pun). Rafa would never have played Stevie in the middle regularly. Rafa has always been a defensive manager who likes 2 DM's.

"AND ALONSO GOOD PLAYER YES BUT HE HAD HIS BEST SEASON FOR US THE SEASON HE LEFT.
FACT 4"

False. You call Alonso a "good" player?? What planet are you on? He is one of, if not the THE best player in that position. . . IN THE WORLD (I say in a Jeremy Clarkson voice) :)

"TO say you don't blame the cowboys for the trouble were in is just stupid FACT 5."

Do you understand English? When did I say that the yanks were not responsible for ANY problems. I said they were NOT responsible for the pathetic transfers that Rafa had approved. Rafa had enough money to build a much better team/ squad than we have today. FACT.

Get your facts right first "SOUL MAN" before you talk out of your @rse. You sound like Tom Hicks.
Full of it.

All are waiting for the 6th October, when effectivley the RBS will take control of the club."

Some one correct me here, but RBS taking control means administration and 9 points deduction atleast, even if they sold the club on the 7th?
Roy

If and when Liverpool go into Adminstration there will be an automatic points deduction of between 9 and 30 points, dependent on the club's ability to get back into the black. It is also dependent on how much is owed in unpaid taxes and the general size of the debt and legitimate ability for the club to pay that debt off. The governing bodies of football don't like clubs who are in massive debt anymore, who are then taken over and then all that is done is the debt is rescheduled. They prefer if the debts are paid off either in part or fully, after a take over. The way things have been done in the past cannot be done the same. Which ties Liverpools hands when it comes to take any possible overs and Man U would be in the same boat.

Forgive me if this post sounds arrogant!

But i know we have match'es to play, team squads, Torres and Gerrard etc.

Nothing matters more than the Takeover nothing!

IF this Takeover fails like my good friend Martin Broughton said "we are f*cked"

But we will have to wait untill Oct 6th if not then somtime but it will happen.

With all the continued talk of Lucas being a player not fit to wear the shirt, I think some Reds fans need to start looking at the capabilities of Johnson. The man is going from bad to worse in his defensive performances, as the game aginst Brum confirmed, and the sooner Roy starts to put a little more trust in the likes of Kelly the better.

No its not Aqua's fault he was bought fo 18m +
Its all Rafa's fault. .every single thing to do with last season was Rafa's fault. He wanted full management control in his contract. he got it & failed miserably!
Rafa is totally at fault.
Feel sorry for Inter! !

Does anyone agree with me that Liverpool don't make the best use of substitutes? There are seven allowed for each match and I think that 1 defender, 1 midfielder and 1 striker of experience are all that is needed. This leaves 4. A goalkeeper is not really necessary (except perhaps for big matches) so 4 of the younger players should be named and depending on the state of the match the options are better - winning well - youth, struggling - experience. In the 4 EPL games so far only Pacheco (3), Spearing (1) and N'gog (1) have been named. How are these young players supposed to gain experience - we are never in the Cup Competitions long enough for them to do so!

Right, Lot of aqua slagging going on here. Whatever the reason we sold him or even signed him in the first place what everyone seems to forget is the politics that went on preventing him from playing and more importantly the contribution he made when he did play. 18 appearances and 2 goals. What has Lucas done in all his games? How many did Mach score in all his games? How long did those 18 appearances last? Most were sub appearances remember so not bad at all. Last season Stevie had the top assists ( obviously) Second? No not Lucas but bless the lad he tried hard. No not Mach, he was too busy sliding about and picking up red and yellow cards. No not Kuyt either, who was also trying hard but looked more like a marathon runner than a footballer. Second to master stevie was you guessed it, Aqua man! In just 18 Cameo roles. The guy deserves some respect and along with Robbie Keane a massive appology too for the way Raffa and our Mickey Mouse board and some fans too unfortunately (IRWT you know who you are) have treated these honnest footballers. To say Aqua couldnt cut it was wrong. When he had enough game time he looked a class act, unfortunately his opportunities were limited with raffas love child from a failed relationship in Brazil always got the nod. Whatever raffas game was it prevented Keane and Aqua making the mark they should have made at our great club. Raffa won us a very big cup but his arrogance and crazy football politics shattered the confidence of class players and unfortunately roy is now picking up the pieces. Please don't blame Aqua for this mess, he did well in the circumstances.

"Some one correct me here, but RBS taking control means administration and 9 points deduction at least, even if they sold the club on the 7th?

Roy

{Editor's Note: No Administration means a deduction - not a change of ownership - which I really can't see happening on October 6.}"

Sorry Ed this is what I meant: If the bank do take control , does n't that mean administration (hence points deduction etc),
The way I understand it, RBS taking over is not a change of ownership, its bankruptcy like a mortgage lender taking over your house and then auction it for the best value they can get . . and dare I say if no one buy the whole lot then they need to break it into bits and sell the bits off (I m not going to mention the dreaded phrase).

What do you think?

Roy {ed's note - absolutely correct Roy, no need to say anymore, it is a scary thought. Though they are hoping to get round the rules because the club itself is solvent and in fairly good health, it is just the owners that have money problems. Not sure if it will work though.}

The takeover is nearly complete. . Nobody knows who, but we will all find out pretty soon. In the meantime is anyone worried about the totally inept performance against Birmingham, i was absolutely disgusted with them all. It shows how are standards have dropped now without Rafa at the helm, sure he was defensive but my god he wiped the floor with Hodgson as a manager(hope i am proved wrong). He was crucified for finishing 7th, yet in six years he finished in the top 4 every season, reaching 2 european cup finals. Now we are all hoping we can finish forth at best, our standards really have dropped. I believe the players now have a smile on their faces in training under Hodgson, something they lost with Benitez. I know what i would prefer, miserable in training but winning on the pitch. Sorry for the rant. Macca

Please publish this Ed as i feel compelled to back you on the discussion on Rafa / Aquilani etc.
I have been a fan for 25 years now & have never criticised our previous managers previously but. . .
Rafa. .dear oh dear!
Lets go back to the start & work in chronological order.
Season 1 : Terrible in League, brought in one of the worst players in our long history (Nunez) in part transfer for Owen. .disaster! Josemi? Really Rafa?
In the Champions League final he got tactics all wrong so we were 3 down at half time. .brought on Hamman at half time to keep the score down (Dont tell me he knew Hamman comin on would mean we'd come back 3-3). Season 2: Poor in League again -hardly any improvement but reaches 4th. Couldn't believe he spent £7m on Crouch but to be fair he turned out to be a good buy (more on that later). Wasted £6.5 on Morientes in season 1 too who scored about 10 goals in 2 seasons!
But makes good purchase in Reina.
Got to FA Cup final where again losing Captain Fantastic rescued us in incredible style (Nothing i repeat nothing to do with Rafa!). Season 3: In fairness we deserved to reach the Champs Lg final that season but what does Rafa do in the final. drops the top scorer (Crouch was Euro Champs Lg top scorer before final) against an ageing Milan team who were definately there for the taking.
Brings him on with barely 10 mins left at 2 nil down (Joke!). Season 4: Makes what i thought was an obvious purchase in Torres that summer (i swear i had been tellin my mates for ages he'd be good but didn't think he'd score 30+ to be honest in season 1).
Plays Crouch only in some games as clearly doesn't like the man for some reason even though Crouch was scoring a good ratio of goals to games when starting.
Tries to turn a dynamo forward in Babel into a winger & ruins his confidence (Same later with Benayoun).
League position doesn't improve again, Season 5: Sells Crouch but doesn't replace him with another target man.
Tries to offload Alonso who is a genuinely world class player who to be fair he bought in the first place. But tries to replace with an average Barry but was willing to spend a little more on a worse player. unbelievable! Keane is bought by men upstairs to allow Gerrard to slip back to midfield but is treated like a dog & lobbed out cause Rafa seems to want to prove a point to the men upstairs who overpaid Spurs for Robbie (fair enough except we are now desperately short of forwards which i believe costs us the league later on & Keane just started to find form too). As soon as Torres gets injured we have only Kuyt / a very young N'gog. (Terrible management) This jeopardises our position trying to catch Man Utd & ultimately he puts his ego before the club! ! Disgusting!
Season 5: Again never replaced Keane / Crouch. Lets Hyypia go due to not giving the man enough games even though Hyypia played some great games for us (Man Utd away 4-1 win for example).
You could see after last game of season Hyypia never wanted to go! Never tried to replace him (Mertesacher) either properly except with Soto who in all fairness is not quite Hyypia standard! Season 6: Sells Alonso who is fed up being treated like dirt by Rafa but replaces him with an injured player who in fact will take 3 - 4 months to ever find any kinda form or match fitness & confidence in a new language, club & country. Now its getting ridiculous! Still only Torres as our main goal threat. Becomes injury prone all of a sudden but still no back up brought in in 2 or 3 transfer windows (Hodgson has carried this stupidity on now too).
Disaster of a season!
Is there one highlight from last season other than beating United at home? Er no!
Now i know i didn't mention he bought Mascherano but only time will tell if he is that good (i personally do not think we'll miss him at all). And some other good things he (Rafa) may have caused but over all he has gradually made us worse (Nearly had a good team in season 5) but i also didn't mention some other bad things ie Pennant, Lucas etc. I could mention loads more.
The whole point of all this is i want pro Rafa folks to wake up & move on. Hes gone now & hopefully won't return. Hodgson is in now & we need to back him.
I'm disappointed he left it till the last minute to attempt to get a back up to Torres. he had nearly 2 months so now if & when Torres gets injured (only a matter of time) who will knock em in for us?
We'll struggle if this carries on.
Anybody who says we don't need another striker, take Torres out of our squad & who would you say is a top 4 forward who'd get into Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham's side? Not to mention Man City's side?
Rafa wasted millions of pounds the club could have used for proper premier lg quality players.
His tactics were actually not all that awesome (Zonal marking), not anymore awesome than most other top ten managers in England. So Ed for people to have a go at you for saying Rafa's time was up is a disgrace! The Aqua thing was the second last straw. Coming 7th. .yes 7th was surely the final straw. For a man who failed so badly he has a very high opinion of himself too hence the contract stipulations at end of season 08/ 09. We'll see this season how he gets on with quality players at Inter.
I would almost bet my house they will not do anywhere like they did last season due to his tactics etc but we'll see. only time will tell but for now please get behind Hodgson (not my 1st choice - Dalglish was mine) as we have a very tough start to our league season so the players need all the support they can get now. .even Lucas.
Please everybody get behind our player cause they are our family of players right now! !

You can Mention all them managers but If you ever hear any , repeat any ex player who played under Clough, they have the utmost respect for him and would walk over broken glass for the man. .they like taylor but they idolised Clough.Managers like Clough, Shanks, Paisley, Stein, and maybe Fergie. are in a different league. Wow, you fans seem to have been busy today. All the doom and gloom, Remember what a difference a win will make against Man Utd.

Next week we'll be on track to win the title.

1)RE: Brain Clough. .

Yes clough liked to play attacking football and his players had good attitude to football. I liked that side of him.

But i don't think he would of done a better job than Hodgson did with Liverpool.
He can't survived in the premiership today because he was the type of manager who had to go out and buy the best players regardless of what the club could afford.

If he was at Liverpool, He would get in Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka. Then let them play attractive football.

He was never able to manage with limited resources

I still believe that Peter Taylor does not receive the credit that he is due. Taylor knew kind of players that could become stars. He was a good coach in my books.

2), Roy Hodgson at Liverpool

Now iv we have lived through Rafa benitez boring football. The fans know that 6th or 7th best that team can manage.

So why didn't liverpool board bring in a Attacking-minded manager. No dis-respect to Hodgson, but paying money to see that performace day in and day out hurts.

Bring in Luiz Felipe Scolari - someone with flair, that will play attractive football.

People want to entertained at Liverpool. Rafa hasnt entertained anyone for a long time.

I would be happy wotching attractive football and losing. or drawing 4-4. Its makes Liverpool a better product to sell to the fans,

At the end of the day, we all know that we are going to finish 6th or lower. So why subject us to that poor display of defensive football.

I want to see Goals and shots on Target.

Hodgson should concrete more on entertaining the fans

I'm usually not one to trash managers after one awful game, but the Birmingham game was very, very bad.
RH is mad, Birmingham are the most boring club in the Prem - therefore, all they do is defend - and he goes and puts Lucas (crap) and Poulsen (worse), two DMs in midfield when we has Raul Meireles, one of the best attacking mids in the world on the bench.
When Meireles came on, I saw a glimpse of what could have been and am royally pi$$ed at the moment.

Either Roy gets brave and plays attacking football, with our best squad on the field, or he should jump off to some club like Wigan who are happy enough just to stay up.

Rant over.

Sorry, I just want to talk about what I believe will happen. I believe RBS are forcing the yanks to either accept a buyer on the table or f*&k Off as they can sell the club for what ever they want in Oct, and should they sell below the loan owed its the yanks and its not the club who will owe the difference. God how i hope that happens. I also still believe that DIC willl be there on the fringes as I saw a comment about them being ther RBS biggest share Holders and it was rubbished by another but in a way the post was Correct on both counts. RBS are invested in by DIC to a huge level and have some influence within (use to work for RBS) but this does not mean they have a hot line but should they want a chance to bid RBS will have no problem letting them have a bite of the cherry. I also don't care who buys as I think this time we will get it right. This season a right off next season if the tide turns in Madrid and we get funding i would expect Jose at the helm and a raft of class to follow. YNWA

I know the depth of discontent with what is happening at our beloved club but to witch hunt players and have a o at the manager is not now nor has never been the liverpool way.We are the most knowledgeable fans and the most loyal fans in the world do lets show it. i am not saying don't voice an opinion but some of the stuff posted on here is over the top- yes we have problems that need urgent attention but we can't do anything until january.
Roy is clever enough and able enough to put us back where we belong but with little money if any and little time what did you expect?
this is a season that we all knew would be tough and if it wasnt for some fake buyers raising hope none of us would have expected any better than what we have now - a touch of realism required by some so called knowledgeable fans.
if Roy gets us into the top 4 by the end of the season he will have over achieved as we all knew the squad wasnt the best and after last seasons debacle it showed where we are truly at.
be patient wait for the buy out that will come when it comes and support the team, manager and club as we have always done.
the fans from every club are reading these posts and laughing their boll*cks off at our expense and as a scouser living in manchester these lot are laughing the loudest and we are just adding to their fun.
be loud be proud and be red till yer dead our day will come again

Firstly everyone stop withthe aground attitude to ed.
Secondly take over news
I am a server tech for lfc tv and I've heard that there is an offer on the table being mulled over by the club from willy wonka.
He has loads of money to invest after the success of theeverlasting gobstopper, and is looking for a way to promote wonkaTV.

On another point what has hapened to our midfield it's bloody awful

If Liverpool were in Kevin Thomson footy manager we'd be around a 8.

Oh and it's also worth noting that Aquilani is not necessarily a player who fits "In the hole" (sic), he performs more as a box-to-box midfielder. His scoring record is too poor to play off a striker and as for the claim that he readily took punishment in Serie A, it may be the dirtiest league from a technical foul standpoint, but physical contact is far from extreme. What little there is was usually soaked up by De Rossi at Roma which left Aquilani free to roam (when capable of using his legs). He fits the Italian league perfectly, just as Dossena was heralded as the best LB in Serie A before we bought him and found he couldn't cope with the pace. It is a slower, more tactical league that few sides in the Prem are looking to buy from if the intended targeted players don't have experience outside it, and for good reason.

13 Sep 2010 19:37:50

Agree, roy should give more chances to jonjo, pacheco & kelly. you can see how good wilshere, evans, pedro, busquets after given chances to play, I DO BELIEVE jonjo'd be better than lucas/ poulsen and pacheco'd be better than maxi/ kuyt/ babel. just believe roy like wenger and pep did.

I think that is a disgraceful comment.
Lucas is our only match fit experienced defensive midfielder at the moment. He is also a Brazilian International.
Yes, he is not the best player ever to pull on the red shirt but he is not the worst midfielder (e.g Ferri, Kozma, Biscan, Cheyrou) but because Mascherano went late in the transfer window Lucas is needed for the moment. This is why Liverpool allegedly turned down several offers of around 8 million pounds on deadline day.

To all the people bad mouthing Johnson. . I agree that he gets caught out big time trying to get back into position but I think that he could be a better winger than a defender.Seems more comfortable going forward.
Also bith Lucas and Polsen are not good enough. . simple as that. We went from Alonso and Masch to Lucas and Polsen what the F*ck do you think would happen .
We now have 3 great player - Reina , Gerrard and Torres all the rest are stocking fillers.
We now have a mid table manager with mid table tactics and mostly mid table players. . Guess were we will end up this year? ?

I have to say Joe Cole's ban must have been the longest ever. I suppose if you want everything to go against you, pick a period whereby a 3 game ban lasts over 5 weeks!

I have supported liverpool for 40 years since the age of 6, , I have seen 5 european triumphs, countless cup and league wins, numerous players come and go, managers change and through all this time I have been proud to be a fan and guess what I do like Lucas, so i guess this means I am anti liverpool as the narrow minded so called supporter suggest, , two words for you mate, , grow up

Totally agree. Why did we get rid of Arbeloa when we needed strengthening in wide areas. I'm sick of hearing "In Rafa we trust". I trusted Rafa to use our funds where we needed them most. £18M would have at least got us 2 decent wide men. Instead he ships out Alonso and Arbeloa and it seems like we are going to lose Torres too. I don't blame the owners for our pathetic purchases and sales. I blame Rafa 100%. He was backed and blew it on Keane, Johnson, Aquillani. All £20M'ish players. In Rafa we trust? My @rse.

CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHETHER THE RUMOUR THAT JOHNSON IS ON £138,000 PER WEEK, THE HIGHEST WAGE EARNER AT LIVERPOOL IS TRUE?

I am a big 442 fan. .And everyone thought this was ancient tactics. .all of a sudden everyones a 442 fan. .Your formation should match your players not vice versa. and liverpool can't play 442 with just torres as a striker. Holding midfielders are a myth. a centre mid is a box to box ball winning good passing good tackling workhorse. a permanent defending midfielder is just another centre half. i think someone dreamt up this holdng midfield position to give hargreaves a purpose in the england set up years ago. 13 Sep 2010 17:37:24
To all the negative crap being directed at stevie g and nando, they had no interest, not happy, coudnt careless. i for one disagree the problem is the rubbish that's playing behind them two holding midfielders to break up the attack of the other team when they do that that's pretty good but then they either play sidewards or back, theres no defence splitting pass coming from either just negative play i agree with many johnson needs pushed forward kelly at rb jovanavich needs to warm the bench sorry jo but your not good enough shelvey to replace lucas and sg back in the middle hes our general and should be there every game merelies behind torres.the defence would be reina kelly carra agger koncheskey midfield cole poulsen gerrard johnson forward mereiles torres.

Sorry to say. But our beloved club will not finish top 4. Neither top 5. Neither top 6, neither top 7, neither top 8, neither top 9.

Chelsea,
Arsenal,
ManU,
City,
Spurs,
Birmingham,
Villa
Everton
Newcastle
Liverpool.

Not the exact order till 9 though. And am a die hard red fan who spent all my summer on the net searchin all over the net to get good news about the transfers and takeovers.
I also thought Roy has handled the press really well. But its beyond him. He s good enough to take us to 5 or even 4. But the players at his disposal are abysmal.
Take away reina cos he s the only one commited fully to the club's cause. His 6 year contract proves it, alon with his determined performances.
Torres-unfit all the time, when fit enough to do somethin, his mind is not interested. Gerrard-in his 20s he was all liverpool hit and england flop. Now he is an england hit and pool flop.
Lucas, johnson-fit to be playing at charlton or any other championship side.
Poulsen-cant blame him. New. But old. Pointless signing.
Kuyt -no real genius. Jus runs around.
Carra-commited but too old, and holding club for ransom at times by demanding first team football.
Skrtel- not been able to understand his mentality.
Ngog-product of rafa madness.
And I say we ll finish 10th cos of the history of the club. .
God save the club.

Thought I would be a lot calmer today but sadly not. RH is really beginning to annoy me with his 'expectation' comments and now the players are following him. These are the questions I would ask Roy;

Why have teams such as Trabzanpor (anfield apart from 15min spell), Birmingham City been able to outplay LFC. Man City beat us 3-0, Birmingham should have as well. West Brom although we won deserved a point. These team squads are less than ours but show more guile & technique.

Why are you sticking up for Torres. His fitness is an excuse. I can clearly see he does not want to be in a Liverpool shirt. If he had stayed at Madrid he would at least have a Europa League winners medal. He wants out. He looks at the quality of player around and thinks what's the point. I agree with him.

Clearly you would have accepted an offer for Lucas but you still continue to play him. He is so poor. Poulson and Lucas are meant to be playing as defensive midfielders yet conceded so many chances to Birmingham. Clearly this formula not working. Wilkshire for Arsenal (19) wenger plays him in the middle with Fabregas. Shelvey (england under 21 captain) plays alongside him not given a chance. Would he be worse than Poulson or Lucas. Shelvey, spearing would at least give us a bit of youthful energy.

Play Gerrard centre mid stop trying to fill holes in other positions by moving him around.

Above all I am bored watching this shower. LFC are takin the p* * out of us fans knowing we will turn up each week watching this rubbish. It reminds me of the Souness era

I never thought I would live to hear a Liverpool manager say that he was "not that disappointed with a draw" against opposition like Birmingham (no offense to their fans). Sad times ahead. I feel sick.

Regarding the post:

If Jovanovic is a Liverpool player then so's my mother!

He gets the ball, runs 5 yards, turns back and passes back 10 yards. Or, gets the ball, knocks someone over, looks good. . oh no, he's lost it again.

You can see it in his eyes, he can't believe he's even playing.

I'd love to hear what Gerrard REALLY thinks about half the Liverpool team.

I think the best way for us would be to go British now, the football wouldn't be pretty but at least the commitment would be there. If we have the money, I'd go for Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor in Jan.

Stick Shelvey in the middle with Stevie and bobs your uncle, we would at least look like we care! I'm sick of this tactical bolox. If we can't win the league then lets play some attacking football for f* ks sake, take some risks. I was a fan of Rafa but after 6 years of tactical conservative football - and Roy declaring we can't win the league, then for god sake lets have a go at teams, I don't remember one good cross from an advanced wide position yesterday. Whereas Birmingham must have put in 5 or 6 top quality crosses and don't tell me Birmingham are better than us on paper.

And don't give me that crap about keeping a clean sheet - Reina pulled off some minor miracles - that's the only reason we kept a clean sheet.

I'm not looking forward to Old Trafford

Whats with everybody going on about aqualani for its not a big deal is it he scored a couple of goals 1 in the league 1 in europa cup i think, doesn't mean he was worth a place in the team! as for lucas being made a scape goat he is not good enough the efforts there but hes not good enough watch the way he plays hes slow on the ball he can't see a pass and can't throw in a tackle. and don't worry bout the midfield cole is back for sunday against utd gerrard back in the middle of the park and meirles came on and looked ok against birmingham. where lpool lack is there width you play through the center or keep cutting inside teams will have that all day its 1 dimensional why not try out
reina

skirtel carra agger

johnson poulsen/ lucas koncheski

meirles gerrard

We all know yesterdays performance was cr*p and its all doom and gloom but has anyone thought that a game against the manure is exactly what we need.
The only game we've shown any real fight and commitment against was Arsenal, a top 4 rival. So yes Roy needs to drop Skrtel for Agger, either Poulsen or Lucas for Meirreles and perhaps Babel / pacheco for Jovanevic and bring in cole and the following team should/ must put in a decent performance on Sunday

Reina
Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Konchesky
Maxi Meireles Gerrard Babel/ Pacheco
Cole, Torres

I might even stick Kelly at right back if he plays on Thursday night and does well

Do you even consider putting Kelly at rightback for the manure, play johnson in front of him and drop maxi?

Ed/ anyone comments please {ed's note - I would play Kelly at right back without question. Johnson has become a liability there.}

How can roy be happy with a draw? ?we played s* t yesterday, i spoke to number of liverpool fans who are saying whats the point of watching a team that can't be botherd, you could see it in gerrard and torres face as soon as they walked out the tunnel,
its getting so bad not even man u, arsenal, everton and spurs fans can be botherd taking the piss any more.
i don't even think a buyer is going to make any difference as roy seems to be getting rid of good players for s* t ones and wanting players such as carlton cole! !? ??

LIVERPOOL AREA BIG JOKE

Is it just me or does this new kit of liverpools add 20 lbs to the likes of torres and gerrards @rses, yesterday both players looked lethargic and mostly uninterested, and above all FAT.I for one wanted torres and gerrard to go in the summer as we have been in this sitution to many times and not learned any lessons , i.e Mcmannaman and Owen, THEY SIMPLY JUST GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS, I wish Gerrard would put an England shirt on under Liverpool one, maybe then we might see some craft and effort, They are the star palyers of the team as for the rest god help us, Jovanovich's thumb as more of a run out thaqn his legs as he's always putting it up to team-mates when hes mis-controlled yet another pass, it breaks my heart to see players like him, poulsson, and maxi' don this famous and once( give anything to play in the top) i know you will say we would have got any of the £70 million + we would have got for messrs Torres and Gerrard, but we might have been able to spend at leats half on 3 or four quality players with a bit of heart for the fight that we deaperatly need right now

Why when everyone is ripping lucas to shreds is there never any mention of just how poor stevie, g is playing of late[shooting from distance at every opportunity not tracking back], how poor jamie is[hoof it out-straight back to the opposition] its easy to have a scapegoat but the only player in our team a the moment who is world class is reina, every other player needs to improve. when i look at how poor we were against b/ ham i can not believe that the likes of shevly/ amoo/ pancheco/ babel etc would not be a better option than some of the current senior players
top eight is the best i expect this year

To the people saying we got rid of aqualani because he was too lightweight for the premiership, even though he had 4/ 5 good games last season when he was given a chance. Did anyone see how easily torres got brushed off the ball yesterday and in many of his matches, but most of the time he delivers the good. Bring back Aqua.

The usual doom and gloom from knee jerkers, you know the ones that say "we're in a relegation fight already" and the best one "if we don't beat utd 5-0 then mid table finish we'll end up" That's an absolute quality post.

The rest are so frustrated and venting their exasperation at the performances of the team. I can fully understand that. So i'll read the posts from frustrated supporters because they have valid points, just in making them they can go O.T.T in their comments.

If we take Lucas, ahhh our golden scapegoat. Without him who else would we moan at whenever we play poorly? Granted his passing (an area that he has struggled to really get to grips with) was wasteful at times. I thought he was laboured in possession, slowed the play down and went sideways a little too earlier and too often. However bear in mind what options he had when he had the ball and going forwards was not an option. Whether it should be or not is open for debate. He actually defended well yesterday and especially off the ball his positional play was at times excellent. He worked hard and basically did the job he is in the team to do. However he lets himself down and opens himself up to criticism with poor distribution of the ball and that is fair enough comment. But can we at least be a little more objective and stop laying the blame for all our woes at his doorstep. I've never submitted to a lynch party out for just one man, our problems fall a bit deeper than a young lad who struggles to pass the ball, most probably down to the fact that there is so much pressure put on him by us that he is too frightened to make a mistake. And we all know when you play with that mentality, mistakes you make in abundance.

More worryingly for us is the form of Gerrard, Johnson, Torres, Skrtel. The style of our play and method of attack. If we had the reputation as being fantastic counter attackers, teams would be less keen to go at us like Bham did. However we have neither this or the worry that we pose any threat going forward. Therefore we are seen as ideal for picking off. Perhaps the easiest of the 'big' scalps to claim a victory.

At no time did Bham ever leave themselves open at the back even as the game went on. They ensured that Dann, Johnson, Kelly and Ridgewell were all around Torres when we were looking to attack. Because of our slow build up, it gave them ample time for any of their full backs to get back behind the ball and within 10 yards of the two centre backs, as well as getting their two wide men (Larsson, Bowyer) neatly tucked in as well, creating little to no space, with little support afforded to Torres what do we expect? A glut of attacking, fast paced play.

We have limited players who can work in such tight areas with any ability in any event. Evidenced by our performance yesterday. New owners will not be correcting this any time soon. We are entering a new era, let us hope it is not of the 'Souness' ilk.

True Benitez, did build a great midfield unit with Masc & Alonso - but he also tore it down by trying get get rid off Alonso in favour of Barry. Huge mistake - and it cost him his job. Last season was down to the fact that we never replaced him because he was sold too late.

At least this year we've got the replacements in early - give them chance to bed in for god's sake. {ed's note - can anyone possibly say that they really thought Barry would be a good replacement for Barry? It is like having buying your girlfriend cubic zirconia instead of diamonds in her engagement ring.}

Why have liverpool still kept faith in lucas he is so poor , and got rid of aqualini what a total farce watching liverpool against birmingham yesterday was painful no creativity no idea whats going wrong .

Even if a takeover happens they would need a lot of money just to get us in the champs league.

i know its only 4 games in but come on the performances of are other top stops is rubbish jamie redknapp is right what he said, diabolicol, shambolic and that's being nice

Ok im shattered have been a liverpool fan for 32 years and its getting worse by the season.

kelly, wilson, pacheco, amoo, shelvey and sterling look great young prospects but will not get us out of this mess for a few years yet.

in my oppinion

I wish we could play 5.2.1.2

buy gareth bale from spurs
buy gary cahill from bolton
buy karim benzema from real madrid

. . . . . . . . . . . . . REINA. . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . CAHILL. CARRAGHER. AGGER.
. . . JOHNSON. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . BALE.
. . . . . . . . . . . . MORELES. . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . GERRARD. . . . . .COLE. . . . . .
. . . . . .BENZEMA. . . . . . . . . TORRES. . .

OPPINIONS ED {ed's note - that team would get ripped to shreds. Benzema has the same problem as Insua - he is overweight. Teams would overrun us out wide, neither of those 2 wing backs can defend at all and Cahill and Agger don't have the pace to cover out wide all the time. Cole and Gerrard are too lazy to track back, so we would end up with 4 players constantly out of position in the defensive third. That is one of the things that make Barca so good, players like Messi, Pedro, Xavi, Iniesta etc, they all work hard to close down the play when they don't have the ball.}

13 Sep 2010 13:55:18

Remember everybody this is Liverpool. You stick with this club through thick and thin. It has been generally fantastic supporting this club over the years.
The whole ownership issue is the thing affecting the confidence of the whole team. I am sure things will change once this is sorted. But if Torres is still unsettled he should be allowed to leave. This club will go on after Torres, Gerrard etc etc. But we won't get anywhere near £50m unfortunately, similar to Mascherano. We are in weaker position now concerning Torres.

I feel that Liverpool is actually a very strong team when all it's players are available. Just hopes Roy hodgson know how to utilize his squad. My own opinion of the best eleven:

Reina

Johnson Agger Skrtel Konchesky

Kuyt Gerrard Meireles Jovanovic

Cole
Torres

Subs: Jones(GK), Carragher(CB), Maxi(RM), Lucas(CM), Babel(CF/ LM), Ngog(ST), Pacheco(CF)

13 Sep 2010 13:45:45
I agree the performance wasn't good yesterday but we do need to get things in perspective; Birmingham haven't lost at St Andrews in a year; everytime one of our players went round one of their players they either fouled of stood in the way, pushed players etc. You only get those calls when playing at home.

A good point was the commentators yesterday, when a Brum player fouled Skrtel got fouled and the ball went to a Brum player and the commentator stated how well it was that the ref allowed play to flow! !

My main concern (and I've stated this before) is that last year we lacked creativity with players injured and now we have less creative players in the team (that get to play in the first team) with that we also lack width and teams are finding it easier to play against us.

I thought Meireles looked good (he actually made some movement but this may have been due to the tiredness of other players in the match). However at least 90% he held the ball or passed to one of our players then moved.

I didn't think Lucas played that bad in the 1st half and to be honest from the contribution Poulsen made I was a little surprised he wasn't off first.

Torres still isn't 100% fit but if anything was told to him (I'm not suggesting it was/ wasn't but he did hold in depth talks with Pulslow in Spain) then if he was promised the 4 / 5 quality additions that Rafa / Torres asked for last season then I can understand why he's downbeat (I know I am).

Some people menstion that we've been asset stripped, I think it's more to do with replacing v good players with average ones and making the business streamlined for any future sale.

From Roy's comments about allowing babel to go if we got a new striker in the last day of the transfer window then I don't think he will be with us come 1st February.

I'm not going to comment on new owners as I have no idea who they will be or if there will be; I wish people would stop suggesting anyone with some money or had money in the past and linking them. Although I'm sure people have links to inside this don't you think the media would be mentioning something if they knew anything and they've not stated anything recently (only about the debt being a toxic asset).

That's all folks.

Here's hoping Thursday's performance is better!

If roy gives lucas so many chances, I think it's being unfair to Shelvey and Spearing because I think they can play much better in CM than Lucas

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH SHELVEY IN PRE SEASON FRIENDLIES. LOOKS QUITE CLASSY AND KNOWS WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT WELL. SHOULD BE ON THE BENCH AND GIVEN A LITTLE PREMIER LEAGUE TIME. MAYBE HODGSON THINKS IT IS TOO EARLY, JUST LIKE HE SEEMS TO THINK WITH PACHECO. HOW ABOUT GIVING THEM EXPERIENCE IN EUROPA LEAGE AND LEAGUE CUP

13 Sep 2010 13:27:29

Guys, why not look at it another way. We played bad and were very lucky but we came away with a point against a team that hasn't lost there in the league in a year! Believe me when i say, there will be a host of other clubs who will drop points there including the big guns. Would you rather us play wonderful attacking football and lose?? me neither. It is so early yet and people don't seem to realise that the season has only just begun. Give Roy time for everybodies sake as he has had to deal with a lot of cast off and we are already realising the full extent of the fitness and the morale levels that Rafa left behind! !

THE AQUILANI SAGA:

I wrote earlier this morning about how we seem to invest our managers with some expert knwoedge and sit back and admire how tactically and technically brilliant they are.
I railed against this and said football isn't rocket science and this point about Aquilani confirms that.
Managers are simply players (in the main) who step up but without the education (football) to do the job precisely.

I and I'm sure thousands of other fans could have said Aquilani was too weak or lightweight to amke it in the league. Why couldn't Benitez see that?
Why did we purportedly blow £20 million on him and why didn't anyone in the heirarchy say - "this is a waste of our money!"?

I don't want to deconstruct the myths that surround 'great' managers, but I have never beleived they are geniuses or spiritually touched special people who know more about the game than I do. They are just people with the chance to show they are.

As an example: if David (I can't be bothered to do my homework for the money ITV pay me, so I will mispronounce every name and sod you lot!) Pleat's sole contribution to his analysis of games on the radio and TV is to say, "they need to score more" or "they need to push up more, " then how hard is it to be seen as a manager!

What you can't take away from Lucas is that he does appear to be making an effort most of the time. But its not happening for him at LFC, very sadly. Yes he has improved, and he does try, but the end product is what counts when the Man U fans are gloating about the CL at the end of the season.
I don't even like to say it about the lad so harshly, but he is just not good enough to be in the starting midfield of a top four team- and if that really is what we are aiming for, we have to take a whole different approach to the quality of the squad, as we are now seeing with Meireles.
City and Spurs are stuttering too, and its still all to play for. If we can just get playing properly with the squad that's there (as City and Spurs will do for sure), and if we can hang on within a few points of the top four until January, we'll have more squad improvements of the standard of Meireles or better, and we'll give the pair of them a real close race for a top four place. It all depends on how soon we really start to play and get some wins on the board compared to City and Spurs- one or both of those teams will get their act together and start building a points lead very soon. {ed's note - maybe if the fans got behind Lucas and lifted his confidence, instead of getting on his back and destroying it, we might see the player that was top scorer in Brazil.}

If we finish in the top four this year, I will show my arse on the town hall steps.

I want to get behind Hodgeson but I haven't seen a shred of hope yet. The fix-ture list hasn't helped but in all four league games there has not been a sustained period of good play. At least with Benitez we were dangerous at times. Now we look frail and toothless.

The first thing Hodgeson shouldve done was ask the team who wanted to leave and then sold them. Then he wouldve had the money and time to replace them. Mash was a top player but why keep him when his hearts not in it. He shouldv'e gone in June.

My worry is that come May 11 we will finnish 6th/ 7th and bye bye Torres. Its not just a possibility, its very likely that Torres will go.

Our only hope now is a new owner in October with 3 top signings in Jan, including a top winger and 2 top strikers. Then and only then, can we finnish top four.

Or with brian clough, history told us that Brian Clough was a loud mouth with no real management skill and peter taylor was the real brains behind clough.
RUBBISH. . the Damned Utd is a book of fact turned to fiction. . Like The Red Ridng Trilogy. .Clough Is a Legend. SMF {ed's note - Clough managed the Florists for years after a final falling out with Taylor and they stayed competitive until his drinking destroyed him. There was a lot more to Clough's success than Taylor.}

Absolutely correct ed. In the era after his partnership with Peter Taylor ended, Clough won a couple of League cups, a Simod Cup beating Everton 5-4, managed to keep Forest in the top 8 in the league and as we know took Forest to two semi finals of the FA cup against Liverpool. He always played an attractive style of football and gave us good players like Johnny Metgod, Des Walker, Stuart Pearce, Steve Hodge, Nigel Clough and Neil Webb in this post Taylor era as well. {ed's note - what I liked most about him was his attitude to the game, there was no cheating allowed in his team. No diving, no arguing with the referee, no play acting, etc.}

YOU ARE AN IDIOT {ed's note - personally I am sick of everyone blaming Lucas for everything. At least the lad tries every single match, that is more than can be said for Gerrard and Johnson at the moment.}
Very True. . for chrsts sake. .stop beng biased towards our Worldclass Players? Your all moanin about playin too many def mids. City did against us and made us look crap. .You slag the defence ?We didn't concede? The main problem is we can't create or score. .so whos to blame?SMF {ed's note - everyone should go back and watch the match over and over and see if they can pick out any kind of movement from the forward players. There is none, there is just nothing there whatsoever. Gerrard needs to play further back so he is not tempted to shoot every single time he gets hold of the ball. I know he can score fantastic goals from anywhere, but he would give himself a lot more time and space to score if he mixed it up a bit more and looked for the pass a bit more often.}

A point at Birminham might well be a good enough result! The performance was shocking. Torres has been getting a lot of stick & in a way, rightly so. But if you watch the game, he was given no support whatsoever by Jovanovic & Maxi. Both these players were terrible. If the forward players can't hold the ball up, then pressure is constantly on the defense who just weren't good enough. The amount of times crosses came in without a descent challenge was unbeleivable. If this happens against Man Utd it certainly won't end 0-0! And the biggest worry is that there is no one to step in to improve things. Maxi & Jovanovic have to be dropped & Babel & Pacheco put in to at least give Utd's defense something to worry about because if we don't, we are looking down the barrel of a 4-0 defeat! Lucas & Poulsen out, Gerrard & Meireles playing deeper & four blokes from a local park for the back 4! Any takers?

The Irish Rover

I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU ON THAT ONE ROVER.OUR DEFENCE WAS THE WORST.JOHNSON JUST LOOKED SH*TE HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING AT ALL SKRTEL WAS A COMPLETE SHOCK FOR ME WHEN WE HAD AGGER ON THE BENCH AND CARRAGHER JUST LOOKED OVERWORKED WITH HAVING TO COMPENSATE FOR THE TWO EITHER SIDE OF HIM THAT LOOKED LIKE THEY HADNT PLAYED FOOTBALL IN AGES.
POULSEN AND LUCAS IN MIDFIELD WERE DIRE CAUSING GERRARD TO SIT DEEP WITH THEM AND BASICALLY RUN A MIDFIELD ON HIS OWN.
JOVANOVIC LOOKED LIKE HE DOESNT LIKE THIS NEW POSITION AND KEPT TRYING TO WALK THE BALL INTO THE BOX AND PASS INSTEAD OF A GOOD CROSS LIKE THE ONES WHICH WERE TEARING US APART OR A DECENT PASS.
MAXI I THINK HAD LITTLE SERVICE DUE TO JOHNSON DISSAPPEARING THE ENTIRE MATCH AND TORRES WAS JUST PRAYING FOR A DECENT LINK UP WITH SOMEONE.
WHEN AGGER AND RAUL MEIRELES CAME ON THE GAME CHANGED COMPLETELY THE DEFENCE WAS STRONGER THE MIDFIELD HAD SOMEONE MAKING CLEVER LINK UP PLAY AND FOR PERIODS WE LOOKED IN DANGER OF SCORING BUT INSTEAD OF HAVING A DECENT SHOT FROM WERE THEY WERE OUR PLAYERS STILL LOOKED INTENT ON TRYING TO FEED THE BALL INTO A PACKED BOX AND NOT HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF SCORING THEMSELVES.

POOR VERY POOR.

After seeing some matches . but especially against birmingham i can state this

Gerrard has lost his touch for about 2 years now . he misses all his far distance shots. he scored those or get close back in the days . now he can't even shoot close enough , let alone on target

Johnson worst defender lfc have had . look at the balls he gives away . the stupid tackles. let alone his attacking power was nothing to be shown against bham .

Pep reina , carragher were Man of the match for me . they put alot of effort

What i also noticed was that even with 0-0 they didn't intend to hurry up the play . they played very slow , no 1-2 passing , and even taking there throws/ corners were slow paced . walking towards a ball instead of running and continue the play as fast as possible. . really if this is liverpool for this year i doubt im gonna enjoy any match . . boring play . . rather have a team who loses every year but has fantastic play , (arsenal) then a team who can't win and can't play beautiful football.

YOur opinion ED ?

{EDITOR'S NOTE: Give the boys time to get into Roy's style of play we have some good additions and will aim for top 4.}

How can u be backing lucas what an awful player he is, maybe all those who are talking only watched him when he played againt newcastle when we hit them for 5 and that is only one of his FEW good performances. No one is blaming him for our poor result but he has been with us from 2007 and he doesn't look that liverpool class. In my view lucas simple isn't good enough. And, if were going to keep having such poor players like lucas and shame to say we have quite a few poor players in the team right now then were darely to struggle like we did last season.

Sorry ed . But I disagree. Agree gerrard dint do tat well either. But I ve not seen lucas doing anythin tats got him a point of support. He doesn defend, he doesn attack. Whats he there for? And there was an instance in our penalty box when poulsen was shielding the ball for lucas(who came running in front) to clear, but he made a hash of it and gave away a corner. May be he is really good. But he s yet another of those brazilians who ve struggled to make a mark in the premier league. Only gilberto silva for arsenal did well. So I think he s jus one for cover, and send him of come january. I ll be happy with 5-6mil. And seems like inter milan mite well become the next liverpool. With rafa being interested in lucas! Pack him of there.

13 Sep 2010 12:08:28

The lad tries every game! Ha. Put me in the field I ll try well too! Utter crap. The whole game the commentator kept mentioning the amount of space he had and then he ends up giving the ball back with a pass straight to the opposition. Ya the lad tries hard getting the opposition on counters. . It shows how brazil have declined that they are made to play him in their national team. . {ed's note - I think it shows how little movement there was to give him an option to pass to a player in a red shirt.}

13 Sep 2010 11:23:32

Comrades!

Rodriguez and Jovanovich were shockingly ordinary (if they were that good). Torres is obviously not match fit and his self-motivation is suffering as a result of that and his all to obvious on-going lack of support from both flanks and the centre. Perhaps until he is a bit stronger he should only play half a game. In his current physical and mental mindset we are risking him and we are not in a position to lose him to another injury or depression.

Poulson and Meireles and Konchesky - nothing to shout about other than Konchesky is better than Insua was later on last season but not as good this time last season. Lets see how they do over the next 3 games or so.

Johnson. The man is not a right back. Either change the formation and use him as a wing back or use him as an orthodox right-sided midfielder in a 4-4-2. But a right-back he is not.

Let's give them all the benfit of the doubt for a couple of weeks but if the standard doesn't improve we will struggle to finish top-half.

Get the kids on. Can't be any worse.

Ed if you agree that our defence is weak, then isn't the best defence for us to attack? And not just at home, everywhere we go. 4-1 against united, 5-0 aston villa, 4-0 blackburn, 4-4 arsenal and chelsea, 6-1 hull, 4-0 real madrid. .id give up texting to see us play that kind of football again.
Red bl00ded! {ed's note - it would certainly be more fun to watch, but the best defence would be a good balance between attack and defence. I doubt we will get to see that from Roy though, he is not an attack minded coach.}

Look the take over is not going to happen till the intrest payment comes into play RBS has put the loan into a toxic state meaning it's not giving anymore money and not is looking to foreclose on the loan.

The massive advantage of this is that the Prats Sorry Yanks will have to sell for nothing or lose the club and take no payment and business men know this RBS will take control of the club and then sell for the Debt which is cheaper than buying from the Prats sorry again Yanks this is why no ones going to buy the club till Nov. Watch this space. So to my fellow liverpool fans hang tight good times will come by the start of next year big cash investment coming Jan transfer window.

{ed's note - Meireles is not fit yet, he was not ready to start in a far more physical league than the one he came from. Roy knows there are problems, there is a huge lack of confidence left over from the Rafa era, and he is trying to do what any coach will do - start by getting clean sheets then working on the rest from there. We just don't have the quality in the squad to go out and beat teams like Birmingham anymore, we have a huge squad full of journeymen and that is going to take time to change. This season is always going to be one of consolidation and the best we can hope for is a top four finish.}

You are right Ed that you have to start from the back to build a team, but yesterdays 0-0 was more good luck than good defending. I would be absolutely amazed if Roy could make the four that played yesterday into a descent defense. I'm assuming Roy thinks that these 4 plus Agger are the best he has at is disposal! Way too slow & nowhere near strong enough.

The Irish Rover {ed's note - I fully agree that our defence is weak, Konch is a huge improvement on Insua, but the rest of the backline are not up to the job. Neither Carra nor Skittles can pass the ball and hoof it everytime they get it, it is like watching League One defending. We should have kept hold of Ayala and played him alongside one of them or Agger when he is not covering left back. I am not going to even start on Johnson, I have never rated him as a player and his defending is the worst I have ever seen from an established international player. 18m for a defender that can't defend is just lunacy! Kelly and Darby should be replacing him at right back if we are going to have any chance. But other than that, I don't really see a lot more Roy can do with what he has at his disposal. He doesn't have the huge sums of money to squander that Rafa and Houllier did.}

What bothers me is that LFC don't seem to be matching the commitment of the opposition, apart from Arsenal 2nd half.
The Brum players gave everything for the cause, although maybe its easier to do that when you have an established squad and a proven system.
Maybe the takeover looming is at last starting to affect the players, but that could be just an excuse. He needs to get more fire out of them as well as gelling as a team, and it shouldnt matter that they are mostly an ageing squad- they should still have legs for most of the game.
Apart from the crappy selection of Lucas and Poulsen together (does he really need to see that in action for 70-odd minutes to know its not his best option, even at a tricky away fixture?), my own biggest worry is his decision-making during the games. I know he was desperate to avoid defeat, but I think he was wrong to wait so long before making changes. I can only hope he learned that at least from his very narrow escape.

It is refreshing to read how many true supporters are able to write about the real situation we are in, instead of always trying to make excuses.

Unfortunately, we are again in a situation where the manager can always fall back on the 'well I'm still new here and we are working on things' until there come a time when working on things doesn't work, as per RB, and we get a new manager, who can then start the cycle again. In the meantime, our squad is getting weaker. I could not believe it when RH said the squad is stronger since he arrived! !
Let's face it Birmingham will finish around mid table, and they played us off the park yesterday. As a supporter, I can put up with getting beat, if the players cam off the field having given everything. With Liverpool is slow, slow, and slower and so predictable. In fact woeful to watch. I don't want to be negative, but it really is a worrying time right now.

The club is being asset stripped.

No the club is not being asset stripped for a start the transfer window is closed and the club kept hold of it's best players. Your brain seems to have been stripped of any sense, stop reading the daily mail. You obviously lack the intelligence to determine what is true and what is made up to sell papers. Dum ass!

You need to look in the mirror my friend before you start calling people a Dum ass!

Masch out. .
Aqua man out. .(after long injury and no chance to show what he can do
Insua out. .
Beni out. .

Free or next to nothing players in? ?

Hmmm. . aint in obvious?

These were by far our most marketable players to sell. . Torres you may say. . but you forget he was still carrying an injury and had just had a bad WC so Madrid would of struggled to of recouped the transfer fee through Torres shirt sales. .
So any fee received would be far shorter of a fee received next year after a good season which is there plan.
Purslow was in Madrid for a long time trying to sell Gerrard(he refused to leave) and drumming up fee's for torres sale next year. .

WAKE UP! {ed's note - Aqualani was not up to the physical nature of the English leagues, he was always injured. He had to go or toughen up and he was never going to toughen up. Mash wanted to leave and good riddance to the whining card collector. Insua was unable to keep to the diet plans he was given and is overweight and slow. That leaves Beni, who wanted to go and pick up double the money at the Chavs. Nothing to do with asset stripping and everything to do with getting rid of deadwood that are not up to the job.}

Hodgesons team that will get a hiding next weekend -

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Agger/ Konch if fit
Poulson Lucas
Maxi Gerrard Cole
Torres

I'd put Shelvey in for poulson and Kelly at r back. Stick Johnson right mid. and give Babel 5 games on the bounce. Last time he got a chance he scored - was subbed at half time and hasn't played since. Shocking

13 Sep 2010 10:00:09
Your positives are reina was brilliant, gerrard was better when dropped back and mereiles showed he can play? Yes, true. Under rafa reina was brilliant, gerrard won the champions league almost single-handedly and raul mereiles is a top portuguese international so why can't he play? My problem is where is the improvement? Why wasn't gerrard started in the central midfield role (he is up there with xavi, iniesta, schweinsteiger, etc after all) and as for mereiles he plays for liverpool so he should have started, regardless of match fitness coz he is better then lucus, poulsen. And finally why arent we playing babel up front or anywhere for God's sake! Ed, help me please what is mr. Roy thinking?
Red bl00ded! {ed's note - Meireles is not fit yet, he was not ready to start in a far more physical league than the one he came from. Yes we have drawn against birmingham away and yes lucas is abosolutly pants but we will do better than most people think on here. 4 games in, joe cole banned, arsenal and man city straight away and torres finding his (always injured) feet again.
yes babel should of started instead of maxi and i hope roy will see that allthough not very defensive he does cause opposition problems. meireles will come good, always looks for the ball and passes FWD the only real problems i saw against brum was that we were very slow with the ball and we did not encourage konckesky/ johnson to push on. a number of times lucas/ poulsen should of released konchesky into acres down the flank and it never happened (as if told not to) but reds fans we are as good as spurs and man city (sometimes) so it will be those teams we are fighting agaisnt for 3rd down. Sorry!
People already posting saying "let's be positive, 2 "give Roy time, " "no knee-jerk reactions, " "it will get better!"

The same old, same old stuff we have been saying season after season after season after season . . and it does NOT get any better.
Someone has posted to say "I am not wtaching that dross all seaon, " and already the 'I'm a real fan' vultures are no doubt curculating to tell him to stick up for the club and question his loyalty.

We were abysmal yesterday and no papering over the cracks will do.

STOP STOP STOP DREAMING THAT IT WILL SORT ITSELF OUT OVER THE SEASON.
So tight and so fast are the games at the start of the season, that we will not make up the six points we are already behind Chelsea.
EVERY year we are told to wait.
EVERY year we are told to be patient.
EVERY year we dream about winning the PL.
EVERY year we fall apart early on.

Before I lose the plot and write soemthing I will regret, can someone tell me in simple and acceptable terms, why do we not give Babel a run if we say he is worth £11m?
Why do we not give Shelvey a run if we thought enough of him to steal him from Charlton?
And on and on . .

13 Sep 2010 09:36:38

Roy played his best team yesterday - raul is not ready he played twice for portugal and they are his only competetive games this season to then throw him into a new league that is faster and harder would have been ridiculous Roy brought him on because he had too. Joe Cole unavailable so Roy picked a team and formation the players know and got a point, not a brilliant performance but not many teams will win at birmingham this year.
Give him time when Roy can pick his team and system we will improve look at the posotives - Reina brilliant got over his cock up for Spain, Gerrard looked good when he dropped back and Raul M(cant spell his surname yet) showed he can play.
Roy knows Lucas isn't the player we need and that is why he will play gerrard, poulson in the middle he then has options with Cole and Raul playing behind Torres or coul use Babel - in other words choices, yes we need a wide man but that isn't gonna happen till the takeover happens so lets get of the teams and managers back we are 4 games into a season we all knew would be a tough one and that we probably wouldn't win the league but it is a season to condolidate stop the rot and change the owners and take steps forward from the debacle of last season.
Rafa has left the club with lots of problems - no wide men, too big a squad, too many average players and the owners we all know what problems they have caused.
so lets be real, patience is what we need not knee jerk reactions

13 Sep 2010 09:34:45
I know, lets go out and buy a top class midfielder then play Lucas ahead of him (maybe weve seen that before?). Liverpool were VERY lucky to get a point yesterday. Konchesky looked average, Jovanavic is the worst Liverpool player since Igor Biscan. Poulson looks miles off the pace and Skrtel is a headless chicken whos distribution is awful - as is carras's, plus Johnson's confidence is shot.

For god sake - Lets pick a honest team to win a game of football! Stick shelvey in instead of Lucas - he is better - even now! give us something to look forward to!, Meireles for Jovanovic, Gerrard in the middle for Poulson and Babel up top with Torres, Keep that team for 6 weeks on the bounce and I bet we'd start winning. When will a liverpool Manager have some balls?
Be honest, if it wasn't for Reina it would have been 3-0 by half time! Hodgeson's Liverpool have been horrible so far, disorganized, unfit and lacking idea's going forward. If teams push up on us we pump the ball forward too quickly. Lets pray Meireles has a touch of the Alonso about him and starts linking our play between defence and attack because not one person in that team gets the ball on the deck and plays at the minute. We need to be calm enough to pass and control, move pass and control - don't just pump it forward. I'm not

I'm starting to get worried fellow reds, I'm not watching that dross all year. .

Reina
kelly skrtl agger konchesky
johnson gerrard raul babel
cole
torres
bench: pacheco, mavinga, amoo, ecclestone, carra, shelvey, wilson, aurelio
i think we should move away from the poulsens nd lucas'es of this world. Give the reserves a chance thers no way in hell they can be any worse. I was only a spermcell in the 70's and 80's but im pretty sure by what ive seen from lfctv( over and over and over again!) that the likes of dalglish, rush, souness, and even the full backs actualy ATTACKED to score goals. But what will probably happen against manure? Reina, johnson(rb), skrtl, carra, agger(lb), maxi, gerrard, lucas, jova the donkey, cole, torres and mereiles and babel coming off the bench when we are already 4-0 down in the 87th minute and old trafford busy laughing their asses off and singing "number 19" or something like that. .s0rry if this takes up 2 much space ed or if im being too negative. No flair, no speed, no creativity, no spark. Absolutely bloody awful! The reason Torres looked so frustrated, was the complete lack of quality coming his way.

We are Liverpool. Why are we going somewhere like Birmingham to play for a point with 2 sideways passing, holding midfielders? This formation is sound, but you need the personal. Without two wingers who can destroy the opposition with their pace, its retarded.

Could anyone tell me what the point in Maxi Rodriguez is please? Jovanovic is also a bench player at best. Johnson was terrible yesterday as well.

We have some fantastic kids coming through, and its about time that we either trusted Ryan Babel with a run in the team, or flogged him.

First team should be. . .

- - - - - - -Reina- - - - - - -
Johnson- Agger- -Carra- - Konch
- - -Meireles- - -Gerrard- - - -
- Amoo- - - Cole- - - - Babel-
- - - - - - -Torres- - - - - - -

Carra has become a liability now. He struggles to keep up & stay balanced and will cost us goals & points this season. Its sad but true. Lucas would not get into any other premier league team and Torres looks unfit and heavy. Is he wearing Neil Ruddocks old shorts? We had no width, no crosses in the box and very few attempts at goal. It looks very bleak but will get better. Reina saved us (hero)and Gerrard was the only one who was busting a gut. Mirelies is good but needs a game or two to settle in. Coles return will make a difference.
We know the club needs a massive makeover, it will lift spirits and bring some optimism to a place that is crumbling before our very eyes, that can only happen with new owners.
H & G are you listening, please SOD OFF now, PLEASE. We were pants against Brum and its all your fault.

I like Roys press conferences and statements because he cuts out the bull but I'm strugglin to like his football. Slow, negative, 2 holding midfielders. Isn't this one of hte reasons Rafa went? We desperately need some creativity in midfield which hopefully Joe Cole can bring when he's back on Thursday and Sunday otherwise its going to be a long long painful season. I know its early yet but assuming everyone is fit for Sunday I would play

Reina
Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Konchesky
Maxi morieles poulsen, cole
gerrard torres

Get poulsen to mark Scholes out of the game ( he's been the manures best player so far) and hope the movment of gerrard, cole and torres can cause them some problems.

Believable / unbelieable team selection?

13 Sep 2010 08:58:56

Buying an extra striker is immenent - - santa crus maybe

AM getting pissed of by the Roy's choice - how in the world would you choose 2 CDM players( LUCAS and poulsen) for a premiership match - its killing us - - we are a big team - we should play attacking football . & why in the world is babel not being chosen( pace and power) - - he would have been influential in the last game . . ierd team choice in my view

And roy should also look at his bench ( starting 51 min not 79min) disappointed

What is the point of setting Ryan Babel targets to prove himself if he doesn't get any game time whatsoever.

Another performance lacking any guile or creativity.
What harm could it have done to unleash Babels pace on the right, or even benching Lucas, playing Gerrard central and Babel behind Torres.

He has pace. He puts defenders on the back foot. For F's Sake you gotta attack to score goals.

Play Johnson right midfied even, Kelly can cover right back - do something, anything other than the week-in-week-out dross we've had to endure for well over a year now.

To the guy who thot this vs man utd:

13 Sep 2010 01:25:00
Renia

Kelly -Skrtel -Agger -Konchesky

Glen Johnson- Meireles -Gerrard -Joe-Cole

Torres - Jovanovic

I think we should play this line up at utd. if its a 4-4-2. Get Glen Johnson in midfield. and Joe Cole out on the other wing putting in crosses into the box. Make Gerrard work for the team in midfield and hope meireles really is creative with ball.

i think its time to Play Kelly. Let Carrgher start on the bench and play with a strong CBK in Skrtel and someone that's comforble wit ball like agger that can pass it out of defense.

Carraghers hoofing the ball today, was stupid. wasted pass after pass.

i would change and go for this instead:

- - - - - -Reina- - - - - - -

Johnson Skrtel Agger Konchesky

- - - - - Poulson- - - - - - -

- - Meireles- - -Gerrard- - - -

- - - - -Cole- Babel- - - - -
- - - - - -Torres- - - - - - -

13 Sep 2010 08:17:12

There is a lot of justified negativity on the forum this morning.
Another new dawn already in flames and the manager saying we won't win the Premier League this season.
Not what I pay my money for; done 39 years of shelling out and wandering across the UK and mainland Europe in support of the team. Not sure I like this constant negativity - and that includes from the club as well!

We are always (like when you top up with Orange and Vodafone!) always 'one step away from, not a lower rate, but from winning something.
Endless seasons of "it will be next year before we can challenge" and that's usually said about eight or nine games into the season - not after four games!

Torres - sell him if the way he performed yesterday is what we can expect on a regular basis this season.
Lucas - should have gone pre-season.
Babel - what's the point?
Aurelio - what's the point?
Konchelksky - looks promising and steady.
Poulsen - needs a little time, but seems solid.
Kelly - keep him.
Meireles - why not on the pitch?
Kuyt - past the sell-by date.
Agger - wasted on the bench and will want out.
Jovanovic - needs a little more time but will be solid.

So what about the 'promising young players'?
Hernandez - I know he's Man Utd, but he's 14 months older than Eccleston and yet still plays regularly. So why is Eccleston not being fast-tracked?
Pachecho - I suspect he will want out in the New Year if he's not a regular squad member.
Amoo - groom him to sell him? What's the point of that?
Shelvey - looked very impressive for England the other week and although he looks and talks like a shy 14 year old, he must be a regular squad player as his passing and vision are superb.
Mavinga - good enough for France's winning U19 side; good enough to earn rave reviews from Houllier and Wenger - not even in the first team squad for any of the games so far.
Pointless!

Maybe I know zero about the game after playing it (poorly) for 29 years; managing three kids' teams (so so) and one adult team (South London Cup!) but I'm like thousands of fans that have supported the club and know what I like and want.
Don't tell me it's like micro-laser brain surgery and like Harry Redknapp and Gordon Strachan seem to think (that unless you're in football you know nothing about the game and should just accept what you get from the experts) - I understand the game and most people can tell you how poor Lucas has been and how average Babel is.

I'm not swayed nor impressed by the experts when they talk about zonal marking (disaster at most levels of the game) or when they say playing with a lone man upfront is the key to scoring a truckload of goals in this game. Professional tosh!

My summary:
- I like Roy Hodgson.
- He will be a good manager for us.
- We will finish no higher than fifth and lucky at that.
- Many of our promising younger players will drift away as we continue to play poor players, unhappy players and players who have no real love for the club.

A week or so ago I wrote that we are now an average club with a massive, yes massive history.
That's what we are now - history.
Scrapping to finish in the top six and grateful for it and still thinking we are bigger than Birmingham and Aston Villa.
Don't even bother replying to tell me I'm negataive and then tell me how real fans stick with the club through thick and thin.
I've been doing that for 40 years.
I support the club and will continue to do so.
I will NOT blindly accept everything they offer me and feel grateful for it.
We are not Barcelona or Real Madrid, nor are we Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or Ajax with deep and powerful shares (the fans) in the club and can affect the policies.
We are Liverpool with massive financial problems and a huge fan base.
But . . . all we now have is an impressive trophy room, huge fan base, massive history and as much success on the pitch in the past 20 years as the rest of the average teams in the Premier League.
But we are no bigger than Birmingham on the pitch these days.
Nobody is scared by us anymore.
Devestated!

The club is being asset stripped.

any player walking out of the club. won't be replaced with the same quality,

look at the f cukdmess he left Texas Rangers in, before it went chapter 11. Hicks sold quality All-star players, where sold at texas rangers, the money went missing.

The performance on the pitch was rubbish. they got to purchase no1 draft pick next season, but couldnt afford to sign him/ wages because the money had disappeared. The clubs land was sold. The franchise was also leveraged buy.

Hicks is real piece of work. Im guessing he likes american sports better than our football. Imagine what will happen here if RBS don't stop him.

On the other hand. I remember a simpler time when Everton use to play at Anfield and their was only one team in city of Liverpool. It went by the name of Everton.

im guessing when the club is put in to administration, The rest of the playing staff will be sold. Then reglation from the premiership.

Look at Leeds, and Portsmouth. Its happened before and it looks like its going to happen here.

rafa benitez saw that the ship was sinking and no one is going to ballout liverpool. Its just too much money to spend on a football club is no where near that value.

The clubs Debit will be refinanced and it will be worth 400million soon. I think RBS will carry on with this game untill they get atleast 250million but in repayment.

Then they look to brakeup the club because most of RBS is made up of Man Utd supporters.

And lets face it, who really cares about the value of the asset once u gotten most of your money back in large intrest payments.

Plus the goverment don't want LFC on RBS control. They don't want to known to be financing a football club.

RBS repuation for honest banking, Lets face it, we are not dealing with Barclays of a bank that needs to save face and will treat LFC in a responisble manner.

RBS are banking slags of europe. whores to the money and don't give a dam about their reputation.

If RBS have gotten 150million so far out of LFC repayments. They will try to pick up the mascherano money and anything else in re-finance of debit.

after that, they will call in the receivers.

The clubs already be listed at Toxic Asset.

Since im the only liverpool fan that doesn't rate torres ill get alot of negative response for this. Torres is not irreplaceable I appreciate all the goals he score for the club but I think we should of sold him in the summer for at least £60m yes I admit that he has an injury problem but to me he's been awful, lazy, tired etc he looks like he doesn't want to play for us anymore. I would rather have david villa or aguero on my team than him any day unfortunately those won't happen though jus wishful thinking of me. And, to all torres liverpool fan please tell me what trophy he has help us won I can't seem to remeber any. Although owen is almost finish torres can't even carry owen's boots

Is Lucas shared his weekly wages to rafa and roy to be played everyweek? I just wonder why formerly rafa and roy kept faith on Lucas, even Gerrard and Torres looked not confident with the starting line up, and things much better when meireles came in. Please don't play Lucas unless there are no more options. Tbh, I will lose my faith on roy if he can get the best out of Liverpool very soon when Joe and Meireles start to play together alongside Gerrard and Torres. Sure we'll need time but we've failed to impressed and we already 7 pts behind Chelsea. This is Liverpool FC roy, you have Gerrard, Torres, Carra, Reina, Johnson, Joe Cole, Meireles, Kuyt. you have quality players and now your turn to show a quality manager.

If we lose at Manchester Utd on 19 September. Our season is over.
1 point at arsenal, lost man-city, lucky-win WBA just managed get goal from nothing, birmingham draw.

Again no attacking flair. I think goals are going to difficult this season.

Next match is Man Utd v Liverpool,

We need to stuff Utd by 5 goals or its going to mid-table 12th place finish.

if something doesn't change.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Personally i don't care what happens on the pitch.

We have to think about the wider picture like the TAKEOVER which be under no illusions is the most important thing that matters right now.

Like sombody Great said "We have to destroy this village, in order to save it"

I've just heard from my friend (who gt this from his mum who works at the LFC canteen) that Liverpool hav not received a proper bid for the club so gillet aftershave & hickups are trying to use the money made from transfers to refinance the loan until january! (this is the rumour flying around at anfield she says). .

Judge for yourselves this is what I've heard & to be honest it would explain why all of sudden Roy hodgson says "we will need invest if are to challenge for the league". .

13 Sep 2010 01:35:35
Blair Mayne i thought we would of battered birmingham today. gone out with all guns blazing.

Because liverpool needed to show that they could win. Alot of people where looking for revolution to begin

Instead people are calling for Roy Hodgson to be sacked.

With poor results at arsenal, man-city, and lucky win at WBA. Liverpool really had to put on a performance today.

It was disspointing to see how liverpool played.

This reminds me of Damned Utd - brian clough,

if we lose at Man Utd, you have to say their is something really wong within the camp. the players must not be listening to the manager,

or with brian clough, history told us that Brian Clough was a loud mouth with no real management skill and peter taylor was the real brains behind clough.

Seriously did anyone think we'd get more than a draw today?

Birmingham had not been beaten in th last 16 home matche's in all competitions that's why i did today's match for a draw.

IF someone tells me i was wrong then i'll apologise BUT this time i got my bet up as i took a draw at 9/ 4. It's not me being pessimistic just a good bet.

Why don't liverpool play the same shape, formation that they did at Arsenal. They played like champions on opening day.

How have things gotten so bad, soo fast. was mascherano the only thing making us look so good on the pitch. We should have thought harder to keep Aquali at the club. No creative passing in midfield.

Paul Konchesky , Raul Meireles, Christian Poulsen were a waste of money. I havnt seen anything special in them at the moment. They look like squad players. Bit like lucas level (i feel the club is being asset Stripped)

Emiliano Insua, Javier Mascherano, Alberto Aquilani where hugely better quality players.

Also alonso + arbeloa too. . Great players for us.

-Pepe Reina is liverpool world class.
-G-Johnson isn't at the right level to play for liverpool defense(remember he came from Portsmouth, not woth 18m) also played out of position (think hes a winger)
-Jamie Carragher is too old and can't run, 32+. hes getting on,
-Aurelio getting on in age and his standard has dropped since benitez didn't like playing him last season.
-Paul Konchesky is not world-class quality. hes mid table/ bottom table player. should of bought leighton baines from everton
-Christian Poulsen is past it, 30+ player at end of career (another squad player like lucas)
-Steven Gerrard. Use to be great, but i really havnt seen anything from him in the past 3 seasons. 2006, he is past it, 30+. We should of sold him to real madrid.
-Lucas- at best lucas is squad player. not liverpool standard.
-. Maxi - was never good enough to play at liverpool, some-what thought he was purchsed to keep Mascherano wife happy.
-Babel - not liverpool standard.
-Ngog -shouldnt be anywhere near first time. he needs learn his trade on loan. his strike ratio is 1 in 10. at this level, not good enough.
I rate Kuyt - but hes 30+ *believe kuyt gives everything, each time he plays for liverpool. Works hard, runs.
Torres- great player, but always injuried.

Milan Jovanovic- looked great on the opening day, not sure if what happen. He might be a player, or another waste of money.

Joe Cole - can't wait for joe cole to get back and save our season. The best midfielder liverpool have left.

Re: Roy Hodgson.

I think roy hodgson has to figure out a philosophy, idea, ethos, vision of how football should be played at liverpool.

Arsene Wenger knew the kind of football he wanted to be played at Arsenal. technical passing football attacking attractive football. Wenger arrived at Highbury in September 1996 with this idea of how football should be played. It hook him 10 years to change the club.

Roy Hodgson should come out publicly and say what his vision for the football club is. how he see the club developing. I don't want overnight sucess, but want him to show us something.

Or otherwise he should have taken the england job. he would of been happier playing 4-4-2 with National side and getting love from the fans as he wotched free football games.

Why did he take on the job at liverpool. I remember him at Inter. He looked at the team and thought, they technical. So im going to build a team of robots, machines that keep going for ever, and never stop with big strong players that keep plugin away.

He managed to take inter from mid-table to success in league and europe.
