The supply to messi was absymal. The wee mans missed a good Chance but Argentina should have won with those chances.
Praise to the germans, total football throughout the tournament and.it shows how important midfield is.

Believable9 Unbelievable3

Messi is supposed to be the supply! The only reason Lavezzi came off and not Messi is because of status. Messi had a shocking tournament and once again, him bullying the manager into playing how he wanted to play cost his team. He went missing yet again like he does far too often to be considered the best of his generation, let alone the best in history.

Agree8 Disagree5

14 Jul 2014 00:03:14
Wasn't total football against Algeria or USA

Agree3 Disagree0

I think if Argentina had Xavi and Iniesta playing for them

you would of seen a different Messi they do so much work

behind him at Barcelona, which allows him so much freedom

Pity there Spanish

Agree1 Disagree1

Messi has shown that it`s all about him and doesn`t care about giving effort for the cause. Case in point, when you see the way Miro Klose who is THIRTY SIX YRS OLD (36) battled, chased and ran his socks of for his team and see the way "the best player in the world" (lol) just walked around the pitch while the game went on unbothered and uninterested, shows you all you need to know about how arrogant he has become. Pathetic WC performance, really.

Agree3 Disagree0

Even after the 90 mins when the Argentinean squad were in a huddle with the manager messi just walked off and stood on the pitch "ready" by himself. it's a shame that he has almost become a disgrace at this stage!

Agree3 Disagree0

Golden boot he wasn't that bad now was he

Agree0 Disagree2

There was at least three in the German team more deserving. let alone others such as James Rodriguez.

can't wait to see the relationship with suarez 'flourish' at barca!

Agree5 Disagree0

Argentina have no midfield quality whatsoever to link defense to attack. They've tried several different formations throughout this tournament and one thing is completely lacking. A deeper midfielder who can control the tempo and passing. at time di maria was playing midfield (abysmally) Mascherano is a dogged defensive mid nothing more. Perez and Biglia panic quite often in posession and neither can really tackle.

If they had a youthful riqulme or aimar. I think they'd have done much better.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sickening that Messi gets player of the tournament with such a clear lack of effort. Yes he is probably wrecked tired but he could have fought much harder for his team.

I agree with Marshy on James Rodriguez being more deserving and from the Germans I'd say Neur and Muller were more deserving. I was hoping Neur would get caught out his sweeper keeper annoys me but he didn't so he probably deserved it.

Agree0 Disagree0

The poor costa rican keeper.won 3 man of the matches (I think)and still didn't get the golden gloves

Hi eds,

Just an idea. Can see you're getting frustrated by people continually asking questions RE: the same players. Would there be the recourses to create a separate page where could log info and rumours on individual players, just because the search function itself people don't seem to grasp the concept off and the relevant info can be diluted in a far larger post.

Cheers guys

Ok

So just for a bit of fun. and I'd live the eds opinion in this.

Who is the one player that we have signed that disappointed you the most.

Mark Gonzalez springs toy mind.

Opinions.
Tom

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Harry Kewell

Agree0 Disagree0

Luis Suarez

Agree2 Disagree7

Morientes for me.

Agree2 Disagree0

Joe Cole; Alberto Aquilani; Glen Johnson; Fernando Morientes; Andy Carroll.

Makes you realise how bad our transfer dealings have been as that's 5 major contenders from the last 8 years alone.

Agree1 Disagree1

13 Jul 2014 23:52:29
Mauricio Pellegrino for me. Apparently he was the rock that made Ayala look good, instead he was old, slow and consistently out of position.

Oh, Anthony Le Tallec, wasn't he going to be the next Henry?

Oh, Bruno Cheyrou!

Oh, Djibril Chase, we got Cisse Chelsea got Drogba and the rest was recent, quite painful history.

That being said, we have pulled some amazing rabbits out of the preverbial hat.

Who could have predicted how well some of signings have done?

Steve Finnan, Stephane Henchoz, Vladimir Smicer, Didi Hannah, Gary McAllister.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 00:12:44
Got to be Aquilani, but El-Hage Diouf not far behind him.

Agree0 Disagree3

Harsh putting Johnson in the list! Up to a season or two ago he was good!

Agree3 Disagree0

Robbie Keane for me.

Agree1 Disagree2

Rafa was the reason Keane failed

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Keane was the reason Keane failed.}

14 Jul 2014 06:45:23
Joe Cole and Ryan babel

Agree0 Disagree0

Philip degen, el zhar, babel, aqualani, joe cole, paul konchesky, david ngog, mark gonzalez, diouf there are more but every team makes bad signings

Agree1 Disagree0

Aquilani, Sean Dundee and El Hadji Diouf

Agree0 Disagree0

Paul konchesky. atleast with all the others we'd seen good performances abroad, and they just didn't transition to the PL or they looked good young, but never filled potential.
Konchesky just never shone as a left back, we had other options and paid for him, gave away 2 academy players. I don't thinka single eprson got excited by the transfer NOT 1

Agree0 Disagree0

Think people are missing the point of the original post and just naming all our dodgy transfers. My pick would be harry kewell. Remember being so made up in the pub that Friday as he was top drawer at Leeds. Big let down. Or robbie Keane. Big fan of his throughout his career and we finally sign him, for whatever reason it didn't work out and I was gutted.

Agree0 Disagree0

Poulson, voronin,

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally, it would have to be Andy Carroll or Robbie Keane. I thought Stewy and Andy would be world class for us, and we ended taking huge losses where they were concerned. Keane was expected to be a great complement to Torres and ended up frontflipping straight to the US. Granted, there was a lot of turmoil at the club back then, but those two certainly underachieved (considering the expectations).

Won't hate on Kewell too bad, as he did start for us in a CL final win (yes, I realize he only played the first twenty minutes). Morientes, who was cup-tied or the CL, is someone I expected tons of goals from, and he had 6 in two years. Cisse broke both legs (admittedly, not his fault) and Sahin was probably our worst ever loan signing. Special shout out for Joe Cole, who is our worst free transfer, IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 22:15:36
Wondering who well take our free kick and penalty next season? I believe Gerrard won't play every game . Hopefully ed 001 you can share some of your view thank.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Ed001 is not available but suspects Victor Moses will be taking them.}

Free kicks will likely be Coutinho, Lambert, Henderson, Borini or Gerrard. I'd expect at least one of them to be on the pitch at a time. Who knows, maybe Sterling can add that to his game like Bale did.

Penalties will be Sturridge, Coutinho, Gerrard, Lambert, Borini or Agger. Sturridge needs to get on the trainibg ground with Lambert, Borini and Gerrard so he can learn how to take them under pressure!

Agree2 Disagree2

Aspas will take corners

Ed002 Thankfully Moses is back where he belongs. Further down the league table ;)

Edda.

Why do Liverpool take forever to get the deals done? Other teams seem to move a lot quicker than us.

Believable0 Unbelievable6

{Ed002's Note - It is the hyperactive fans who struggle, not the club who do decent business.}

3 deals in 13 days with Bertrand, Lovren, Markovic and Origi all being worked on as we speak. Hardly slow.

Agree5 Disagree2

I would rather us take our time and do it right than rush and overspend or get the terms wrong. Other teams can afford to do things quickly, we are in such a delicate state that we need everything done thoroughly and properly.

Agree2 Disagree1

Andy Carroll is the answer you seek.

Agree2 Disagree0

How are we in a delicate state? I'm far more impressed w/ our own transfer dealings than MU's. Lallana will blow minds feeding Sterling, Sturridge and Markovic, and that's w/out fitting in Coutinho or Lambert. Gerrard and Henderson will be free to break up play, and the defense behind them will be improved as well. I'm confident we'll be in the top four at the very least, and we've got more options to proceed in the cup competitions.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 21:34:03
Watching this World Cup I have become more and more aware of a fairly obvious point in regards to some of the stronger european nations.
You look at the likes of France, Italy, Germany and Spain and realise that in each of these nations the national team is supplied by one two or three domestically based teams. Germany are mainly supplied by Munich. Spain by Real and Barca. France by PSG and a few others. Italy used to be mostly the Milanese but perhaps more Juve, at the moment but still.
The point is that each of these nations get their core players from teams where they play together week in week out in their native country.
Liverpool are quick becoming that team in England, with mkre English internationals already added to the 5 that went with the England team this year.
I believe that BR's time studying football around the continent has shown him that this is a the way to build a team. A core of players who can all communicate easily and build a rapport. And this obviously transfers up to the international stage as that club based form and rapport translates that much easier.
Get in BR, not only strengthening our club but inadvertently strengthening the national team.

Believable12 Unbelievable1

I can only think of three psg players in the squad? Matuidi, cabaye, and Digne?

Agree3 Disagree0

Wont work if you Roy at helm

Agree3 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 10:34:48
Interesting idea, Andy. I don't know how true it is though i.e. only 3 or 4 PSG players play for France.

Also lots of succesful international teams don't have this e.g. colombia, chile etc.

13 Jul 2014 21:11:24
Can I make a point with regards to losing Suarez for all to take on board.
Liverpool have lost a great player in Suarez and we can all get caught up in how are we going to replace him and his goals.
Suarez scored 31goals for us last season, so here is what we need to do
We conceded 50 goals last term so if we can reduce that by 15 goals and the players brought in score 15 goals our goal difference does not change and there is no impact from Suarez depature. This is achievable and we will be fine.
Can the eds comment on my theory

Believable6 Unbelievable5

Too simplified a view IMO.
What about assists?
It's not just scoring goals. It's results.
Eg 2 scenarios over 2 hypothetical games: first scenario: win 1-0, win 1-0
Second scenario win 3-0, lose 0-1. The goal difference is the same but the points difference is huge.

Ed with Suso now staying, do you see Teixera possibly going out on loan?

Believable0 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Too early to say.}

13 Jul 2014 20:05:43
I think we should give Lambert the #7, I think he would relish in the pressure.
I've just got a good feeling about him, I think his passion for Liverpool plus some management from BR, He might just be a star.
And if all goes smooth, He would in my opinion be the luckiest man on this planet, achieving all our dreams

Believable8 Unbelievable3

I had thought he was getting it and that's why he hadn't been assigned a number yet?!

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 19:55:51
Happy to hear the suso reports, firstly that he will be a given a chance, mostly though the fact that he wants to fight for a spot. Exactly the attitude we need, hopefully can prove he has the ability too!

Believable19 Unbelievable1

Think his problem is adapting his obvious skill to the pace of the BPL. A year playing regularly in Spain was a good choice for him, and I think Rodgers rates him enough to give him chances. Alberto went out, so right now he's our 3rd CAM option behind Lallana and Coutinho (IMO). Hope Suso, Ibe, Tex and Wisdom are given roles in preseason, and I think they will be.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 19:42:23
Hi eds, first time posting but followed the site for a while. I am worried about this transfer window, losing Suarez.

Whilst he is a great manager and has definitely improved our team, I fear that Rodgers has only made 2 good signings (Sturridge and Coutinho) albeit, we've not seen the likes of lallana in a red shirt.

Would we be interested in Reus? Just a question, I release it is highly unlikely.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable5

{Ed002's Note - I know nothing of Liverpool interest in Reus.}

Liverpool to sign Reus!
Thanks allot twitter!

Believable1 Unbelievable7

13 Jul 2014 18:17:17
Hi Eds,

Do these rumors of Reus to Liverpool have any substance? I read that he was a Barcelona target before Suarez, so maybe it has some truth? can't imagine Dortmund letting him go though considering the lost Lewondowski but would he be available for a large chunk of the Suarez deal? Maybe this is a reason why Betrand is being looked at as opposed to Moreno as they need to balance the books.

Cheers

Believable1 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - I know nothing of these "rumours" and am astonished you are not bright enough to have picked it up the multiple times I have stated that.}

13 Jul 2014 18:14:55
Eds apparently Markovic is confirmed as a Liverpool player, and has updated his social media status to " thank you and goodbye"

is this true?

thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - It will happen and will be done when the paperwork has been processed and his international clearance confirmed. Using Twitter or Wikipedia is not how the business works.

13 Jul 2014 18:12:43
Want Chelskis transfer committee.

£37 million for Mata

£50 million for a David Luiz

£8 million for Bertrand

Nearly £100 million for players they don't want.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea does not have a transfer committee. Mata was an approach made by an ex Manchester United manager and a well-known "consultant" to a director of Chelsea. The fee was more than you suggest and was pretty much resolved in one evening with the player immediately being asked if he would be open to the idea. The Luiz transfer out was negotiated by Marina Granovskaia as was the Luiz transfer in. Liverpool was one of the clubs who requested a price for Bertrand - you have finally gotten one price right. Chelsea consider it fair for the player but would not block a move if a sensible offer was made and a deal was made that the player accepted.}

So is Bertrand coming to Lfc, then?

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool have enquired on a number of occasions - and as recently as the past few days.}

13 Jul 2014 20:16:26
Prices are only from media reports if they are more than I posted then it strengthen my post. very high prices for players the manager didn't want

Agree1 Disagree3

Take it from me he is not coming to lfc trust me

Agree3 Disagree3

Considering we just sold Suarez (a player we. wait for it. don't want), I'd say you're being a bit hypocritical about Chelsea's 100 million for players they don't want. We made more on Suarez alone than they did on those three (if Bertrand is bought). Not to mention the sale of Chelsea 'hero', Fernando Torres Liverpool #9.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 18:08:02
We find ourselves in a transfer frenzy with a large sums of money something we haven't had for a couple of seasons

Here's what I think will happen with my limited info and covering the media over the last few weeks.

BR says six more players to come in

Origi & Markovic will sign no surprise there.

Bertrand or Davis will come in at left back (Davis for me) Sevilla are pricing Moreno out of a deal.

Vorm to sign BR wanted him last year.

Lovern wants a move to Anfield and will arrive.

Striker Bony, Lukaku, not suited to Liverpools style expect Rodriguez to arrive, Benzema doesn't want Liverpool

Coates, Assaidi, Aspas, Kelly, Reina to leave
Wisdom, Alberto, Ibe out on loan

Will listen to offers for Agger, skrtel Enrique, Lucas, Johnson but only if very good offers and replacements are found.

You will see a introduction of Wilson, Ilori, McLaughlin and Suso to the first team this season.

Not talking money as ed doesn't like it.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

{Ed002's Note - That's good CR.}

I don't see a keeper coming in to be fair, mignolet will get better with hopefully a stronger defence!

Agree1 Disagree2

And also, is that James Rodriguez?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I suspect he means the injured Jay Rodriguez.}

I personally would like to see Jay come, but I don't see how he could transfer with the type of injury he had and the sheer amount of outs at SH (probably including Lovren). He can't possibly play before October.

Hi eds (again!)
Just wondering, how reliable is the mirror's article about Ian Ayre travelling to Spain to finalise Moreno deal.
Thanks.

Hi Ed

I remember a while back you said you preferred Teixera to Suso (something along those lines)

What in your opinion separates the two in terms of ability, potential and flexibility in a system of play? I think both could be valuable assets (with Suso's latest comments underlying his commitment) this coming season so I'm just interested to hear your view.

Just want to also say great job eds, I've been following this sight for close on 9 years and very rarely post but your efforts have not gone unnoticed all that time, keep it up!

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no no, I prefer Suso, but Teixeira is the better player. I know that sounds silly, but I love the attitude of Suso, how he is not afraid to get stuck in etc. Overall though, in terms of pure ability, Teixeira is among the best we have. I don't think he is as flexible in terms of where he can be effective on the pitch, but get him playing at his best and his vision, technique and passing are top class.}

13 Jul 2014 17:40:44
Reet I apologize for people biting your head off over a funny well intended reply you posted on our page, I guess some people are not evolved enough to understand a harmless dig that's posted in the name of humour not malice .

Question to Ed001 - you've mentioned a couple of times amounts on here with regards to players (Lallana and Suarez costs); after you've mentioned this does Ed002 give you Hell?

lol many thanks and all of you keep up the good work!

Believable3 Unbelievable0

13 Jul 2014 16:15:36
hi eds. I think our defence needs some shiping out especially agger, who is not geting younger, high wages. he is highly rated how come there is no real interest in him. Is he overpriced by the club? also are we still trying hard for lovren?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool has had an offer rejected for Lovren, so an impasse right now. Agger was expected to leave this summer but as you say there is little interest.}

13 Jul 2014 19:12:22
I know it won't happen, but if I could pick any foward player for Liverpool it would have to be tomas muller, absolute monster of a player, gives his all and plays everywhere.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

13 Jul 2014 19:02:37
Offer Southhampton Suso on loan as part of the Lovren deal, I think that would be good for both clubs and Suso.

Hi Eds - great job yet again during another hectic LFC transfer window.

Has there been conformation on Suso's position with the club yet? I have heard that BR has told him that he is part of the clubs future and with that guarantee, he is happy to stay in Liverpool.

Cheers

Would Reus be a realistic buy? Or even schurlle from Chelsea?

Whatever happend to Marko Marin? Brendan loves giving Chelsea players an chance to shine

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - None will happen.}

Why would chelsea sell one of their very few successful attacking options to us?

Agree2 Disagree0

Liverpool could give them 20million reasons.

Agree0 Disagree1

Who would you like us to sign, striker/ attacker wise?

Agree0 Disagree0

I was really hoping for Sanchez personally

Agree1 Disagree0

I wasn't overly ecstatic being linked with bony, but the more I think about it, I think he may be just what we need

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 15:51:03
I Think Bony is really Underrated by most of our fans.
Maybe he's not a Suarez but he can add +15 goals and maybe even +20 goals with Coutinho Sterling and Lallana behind him.
If i'm honest there are better, younger and cheaper strikers like volland, Lacazette, .
But I wouldn't mind Bony at all some guys are acting like he's another Carroll/Aspas.

Believable11 Unbelievable4

13 Jul 2014 19:34:21
Totally agree with you on bony.
The lad did brilliant last year in a struggling Swansea team.
I'd be more than happy with him.
Seeing as a lot of you get hung up on the so called big names. Would you be happy with cavani for £50 mil?
Because IMO bony would do more than him.

13 Jul 2014 15:27:38
I have been reading reports today that we are looking at bringing in Arda Turan. Do you know anything about this?

I know that we have looked at him many times in the past and he claims to be a Liverpool fan and with a €40 million buy out clause I think he would be a great buy.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Nope.}

13 Jul 2014 11:08:22
Hey ed 01, what do you think of the rumour that Suso will stay and fight for a place? For a while now I have been hoping we will obtain another wide player, (mainly because I am a spoiled brat and I WANT Griezmann), but in fairness, he could play a role for us, and offer viable cover along with Borini!
Do you know if the club is pleased with his loan progress, and consider him ready for rotation?

Cheers!

Believable10 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is not a rumour mate, he has spoken to Rodgers and made his decision that he wants to stay and win a place. I expect him to get assessed in preseason, with the rest of the fringe players, and just hope he impresses now.}

Great news! Hoping he would get a chance

Agree8 Disagree0

Delighted!
I hope suso impresses.in pre season and gets a real chance this season. Quailty player.

Agree8 Disagree0

Hey Ed001.

What is Rodgers response to this?

I know you said he may be sold, but is Brendan happy to see how he gets on through the season. Or is it simply how well he does in pre-season and the decision will be made.

Cheers!

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it was after the chat with Rodgers that he made the decision, so I would assume Brendan was pleased and guided him to stay.}

Good on you Suso.

Do a Hendo and force Brendo to pick you.

Agree1 Disagree0

Just so happy to hear Suso is staying and willing to fight for his place.The lad has such potential that we all know and it's player's like him we need to stay and help keep the club on the road we are on now and if anyone can do it BR defo can.
What do you think Ed001?

I love suso he's got a bit of everything except pace great passer of the ball he just needs to do extras in training to show people he's not lazy or his attitude isn't poor let's see If he can make it on the big stage bags of potential

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001 do you feel that with BR as his manager he will really get the best out of Suso?Yes I know at the end of the day it's in Suso's hand's now.My point being that if any manager can get the best out of Suso it I'll be BR.

{Ed001's Note - he certainly seems to have a knack for improving players, well him and the staff he chose to work with. It is something the club has needed for a long time, a really good coaching base that improves a player's technique and improves their attitude.}

13 Jul 2014 15:16:46
I know it's been a week or so since, but what does everyone think about Lovren coming out and declaring that his head "is already at Liverpool"?

Do we really want another player at the club who like Suarez has no problem disrespecting their club?

Red Rum

Believable1 Unbelievable5

It could also be argued that he want to come to Liverpool so badly that he is willing to put his reputation on the line. I'm just playing devils advocate, if he really wants to go to Liverpool then submit a transfer request.

Agree2 Disagree0

You have a fair point!
I think he should have not said it, but I can imagine he is frustrated as a excellent player watching all the best players getting sold off. He like anyone has ambition so can see why he wants out, but maybe more privately would have been better?

Agree2 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 16:19:45
As he has arrived today in Belgium with Saints for their summer training camp he will only be able to join in the work with the ball at his feet then!
Maybe he will think again about what ambition means when his head in Liverpool watched the best player being sold to a bigger club?!

Agree0 Disagree4

With money being spent for incomings as well stmarys. not sure if we can say the same for southampton aye?

players come and go, even barca sold sanchez. us selling suarez is one thing.

Agree1 Disagree0

Don't be such a fool St Marys. The ed's said that the deal for Suarez was in fact agreed in November. I do not think many fans expected him to be staying, regardless of what he said, contract extensions etc. We have ambition but no single player/person is bigger than LFC.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yawn yawn you can understand him wanting to join one of the biggest clubs in europe why on earth would he not, everyone wants bigger an better things.

Agree1 Disagree0

Maybe Dejan just meant he is ready for the first game of the season!

Why are Liverpool such a soft touch when it comes to making transfers?

ssn say Aspas will join Seville on a LOAN DEAL yet surely it would make more sense for us to sell him to them for £5M or so as we are stil trying to sign Moreno from them.

Believable3 Unbelievable3

Can't really look any further than Ian Ayres.

two questions to ask you? Do you think it possible for brendan rodgers to play markovic as 2nd striker then a winger? Will he bought filip markovic to help him settled down? Just want to see your view . Thank for the hard work here cheer!

Ed's, are we truely linked with bony? When I first heard the rumour imy first reaction was 'why? We need a Suarez replacement'. Then I thought about it and have come to the following thought. We don't need a Suarez replacement. Those days are behind us. And we already have the second highest goal scorer in the league. Also, bony is big and strong and he would be able to hold up the ball and allow Sturridge to make runs. Finally bony himself scored a fair number of goals for a first season. With bony Sturridge and Lambert proven goal scorers and the odd 10ish goals from the likes of gerrard, sterling (who I think could find the back of the net even more this season), coutinho and lallana. we could win the league! Now I want him, way more than I want many of our other rumoured transfers. So, what's going on with him? Genuine interest or is my new love affair all for want?

Should Gerrard continue to be played in the holding role this season?

I'll keep my answer short and say no, because he doesn't provide adequate protection for our defence. We won't be able to out score our opponent as we did last season with Suarez, therefore, we need to ensure we are solid at the back.

Red Rum

Believable3 Unbelievable6

So we lose Suarez's goals and Gerrards passing ability form the back ( against someone like Lucas for example), our defence will have to be sh*t hot to give us a good goal diff.

Agree2 Disagree0

Sweeper role like lotthar matheus done coming to the end of his career.

Agree1 Disagree1

I like gerrard still as a player and hope he gets good amount of games but sometimes I do think he holds too much water in the club. He still has a great eye for a pass and is still a very good club player but not near world class imo anymore. Pirlo being a good example of a player in similar role who is truly world class and reads the game like a true master.
Not knocking Gerrard though

Agree1 Disagree1

Agree with you there red rum. Yes Gerrard passing might be missed but that role is all about protection of the defense, which Gerrard offers little. Gerrard should be used in the alonso role a little further forward if you ask me or not at all.

Hello eds n reds. Mine's a shirt number question. Do you expect Sturridge to be given the number 9 shirt if and when Aspas leaves and do you expect the famous number 7 shirt to be filled this window?
Cheers.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No idea, they are simply numbers on shirts and are of no significance to most people. I think you will find the number 7 shirt to be infamous rather than famous given it was assigned to Suarez who lied, cheated, racially abused and assaulted other players, cost Kenny Dalglish his job, cost Liverpool money, spent a considerable amount of time at the club banned whilst dragging the good name of the club through the mud and spent 18 months trying to get out of the club.}

His actions put Kenny in a difficult situation. I think it was more stupidity on Kenny's behalf that cost him his job.

No disrespect intended to the king.

Suarez did cause a lot of problems, but he is gone now it is time to move on. In relation to the op's question, I'd like Sturridge to take the number 9 and Sterling the number 7.

Of course fans are sentimental with numbers, as they are a reminder of the legends that have graced this historic club. In Suarez' case i'd use the words "great footballer" to "legend" to be technical.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Kenny cost his own job to be fair

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - He lost his job because of the actions of Suarez.}

13 Jul 2014 14:12:45
Ed002, I think you will find that anything Suarez done to degrade the number 7 shirt will not diminish 50 years of magical memories created by the former number 7's, it is and always will be THE iconic shirt at LFC.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - It is a number on a shirt, no more.}

It's not just a shirt for us. It's legendary

Agree2 Disagree0

I slightly disagree with you Ed. Suarez contributed to Kenny losing his job that`s very true. But IMO, it was not the ONLY reason. Kenny made mistakes i.e mismanaging the Suarez saga to begin with( those t-shirts were aweful and a PR disaster without firstly knowing the facts of the case), we were aweful in the league, kenny and/or Comolli pissed away large sums of money on poor signings for a poor showing in the PL, and the fact that he wasn`t even their choice to begin with according to some eds on here. The two cup contests (which it seems Kenny prioritized) just papered over these insumountable problems. Kenny was let go because of a collection of issues which most were of his own doing. In the end, he was the manager and the buck stops with him. Suarez was ONLY one of his problems.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Go back and read the posts starting with the incident in Wigan. You were told then he would go and he did.}

13 Jul 2014 15:49:38
Ed002 I do tend to agree with most things that you say on here, but on this one I have to disagree! Why do clubs retire numbers of legendary players then? If it's just a number. The number 7 is iconic not just for lfc but for many other clubs as well! It's about history and tradition which is what all our clubs are built upon. I can see why you would say it's just a number but for me some have more meaning that's all.
Thanks
YNWA

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - A few clubs have retired numbers. I guess you don't see Dalglish or Keegan or whoever else wore the number 7 shirt for Liverpool as legendary then?}

It might be a number on a shirt at Chelsea Ed but with a club with a history like LFC, it's a bit more than that. Similarly banners with meaning as opposed to plastic flags on seats.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I know Ozone, I am only teasing you and I know the number 7 shirt means a lot to Liverpool. Actually I have a vision of someone unpicking the S-U-A-R-E-Z letters off the back off the back of his number 7 shirt. PepeCam is still working and can just about make out the letters she will be sewing on: O-S-S-E-M.

I never sit in the ordinary seats so know nothing of the plastic flags. They will of course be reusable and are probably made from recycled material so, to some extent, environmentally friendly.}

Have to say Ed that is your opinion - not everybodies! Shirt numbers are significant to some people and I am one of them.

I think BR has done a tremendous job as manager but let's not forget Suarez' goals got us back in Champions League. What he has done is disgusting and he has bought disgrace on our beautiful club too many times and has paid the price and gone. But in footballing terms he was simply magical and that's how I will remember him.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - What would have been the significant difference if Suarez wore the number 47 shirt instead?}

It would have cost more to get his name and number on the back of the shirt.

Hi Ed's & reds,
More of an opinion than a question regarding the LB situation. It is possible that both Moreno and Bertrand could both arrive if we could find a buyer for Jose Enrique. Competition for places is vital and both could provide this. Whoever puts that red shirt on we get my 100% backing until they prove themselves unworthy.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Great response Ed002! I hope people will realise if we were to sign Bertrand or Neil Taylor or Ben Davies it would be to start not part of a double signing for backup. I know Bertrand is the only one with confirmed interest but some fans have said they'd like Neil Taylor and Ben Davies too.

Eds fellow reds, is there truth in Lukaka rumours? And I'm not going to post my opinion on anymore transfers as people on here are slating me, but that's fine . I followed LFC for 40 years and never known us buy a lot of players in one window (6/7 ) .if they turn out to be the top players everyone else believes them to be I will be the first to hold my hands up and say I was wrong .the only other point I would like to make is if they do turn out to be sour, I don't want the slaters to start moaning about them they will just have to except the fact .im just seeing a rafa / Lucas kromkamp Gonzales suituation .cheers eds

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what "Lukaku rumours" you are referring to but there have been discussions with a German side and there have been some approaches to take him on loan if a sale cannot be arranged.}

I think since transfer windows have been introduced we have always signed around 6/7/8 players - some are youth and some are starters - Houllier signed Meijer, Henchoz, Hyypia, Camara, Westerveld and Smicer in one window! Kenny signed 7 players one summer including Henderson, Adam, Downing, Bellamy and Coates! It's not something new and think we have to take each player on merit.

We can't slate Aspas as wasn't given a chance, Alberto is one for the future and I think BR got it right mostly last summer! Moses unfortunately didn't perform to the level we expected and or did Cissikho, but they were only on Loan so fair play to BR for not splashing the cash on them as they weren't good enough!

In BR we trust!

when faced with similar situation of losing Torres we brought Suarez, now with Suarez gone I think Firmino should be the replacement. His performance was better against good teams and he is versatile and has no significant weaknesses.He has that element of magic .

Believable5 Unbelievable0

16 goals and 11 assists last season.

He'd be perfect playing just behind Sturridge, chipping in with both goals and assists.

He is a different option to Coutinho, but they are both young and have bags of potential.

Red Rum

Agree4 Disagree0

I agree he would end our need for a first team striker and can play with Lambert as well as Borini because we would have enough creativity to score goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jul 2014 12:19:05
Is markovic currently good enough for the first team? anyone actually watched him play (not on youtube).

Believable2 Unbelievable0

Watched him a few times. He needs to get his head up when he is running. His passes are wayward and his crosses inaccurate. However his natural ability looks good and if we coach him right he could be another Sterling type to come through.

It has a degree of risk to it because if Rodgers can't fix is 'immaturity' so to speak, we could end up with a Lennon! Fast, beats his men easily, but never consistently finds the final ball.

I trust Rodgers though and Markovic is clearlytalented. He'll be a good impact sub and provides worthy conpetition to the likes of Sterling, Ibe, Borini and Suso for the wide roles. Was pleased to see Suso wants to stay. If he goes fair enough, but if he wants to stay and fight for his place, he is more than welcome!

Agree1 Disagree2

I don't think he is, but if Rodgers can sort his attitude out then give it a season and he'll be the first name on the team sheet.

Agree0 Disagree0

My only concern is the comment from Matic (Chelsea) who paid him a huge compliment but then suggested he needed to be more mature / focused on training etc.

If he buckles down and if Rodgers can develop him like he has other players then he can be a special player for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

What attitude would this be?

how can people judge a player's behaviour (which they don't know) before they even sign.

Morning eds & reds
Just wondered if any if the reds could shed some light on the buy players but loan them back to same club deals?
Lets just try use origi for an example(if he completes his move to lfc & goes back on loan to lille) are these deals usually just sweeteners in the negotiation process to bring the fee down by letting them stay with that club for a season? Who covers the guys wages, I assume but of course could be wrong that he would get a pay rise with his lfc contract do we as his parent club cover his wages of yhe loan or would lille be covering or paying a percentage? A loan fee would we be getting one or would that just be involved with the transfer fee & be negotiated before the sale of the player?
Iam in no way knocking origi here I like the way he played at the world cup & thought what I seen of him would be a useful addition to our squad but I do sometimes struggle to understand Liverpools logic. We are still as a club loosing money with each passing day, need a bigger squad to compete on four fronts thus coming season yet we are buying a player rumoured to be between 6-10m in transfer fee to loan him out again, we might not even be in the champions league when he arrives, wouldn't thus money we spending on him be put to better use for a player to go into the squad now, or hey buy him & keep him in the squad now don't farm him out & let's hope he comes back a better player, buy him & use him.
sorry for long winded message.
thanks eds

Been watching a few YouTube highlights of Origi and had a question.

If a player draws a penalty and it is converted does the player who drew it get an assist?

Also if a player causes an own goal does he get an assist? For example a cross is whipped into the box and player miss-kicks it into his own net does the crosser get an assist?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No on both counts. Although some stat sites attribute them, most do not. The Premier League definitely do not though.

I'm hearing the Lazar deal could be announced today. My question,, with all these Midfielders coming in and being linked. Something's got to give,, who will be most likely to leave the club?
I just can't see Lucas getting a kick, Suso has come out and stated he's going nowhere, Joe maybe?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

13 Jul 2014 11:49:15
Wont be Joe, not with his relationship with Rodgers. Markovic isn't a midfielder anyway (a wide forward) and I believe he was being brought in as an alternative to Borini or Assaidi. YNWA!

Agree0 Disagree0

Our only current winger is Sterling, therefore, we were always going to bring in another winger.

In midfield we now have Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Allen and Can. I think that gives us good depth in midfield to be honest.

I wouldn't mind us bringing in a proper defensive midfielder to protect our defence, but then maybe one player will have to leave.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Allen is more valuable to the the squad, and is more suited to the current style of football, than Lucas. It will be a sad day when the likes of Lucas and Agger will leave, but it must be done for the club to progress imo. Both have given nothing but 100%, even though both could have easily left us at various times during their career.

Lucas was abused by the supporters (including me) but he still carried on year after year and proved many of us wrong. He was the best Def. Mid in the prem just before that injury against Chelsea (I think?), but since then, he's been a shadow of his former self. He's been affected by the 2 injuries since then both physically and mentally. Lucas has been an amazing servants to the club and he deserves to be allowed to leave the club respectfully.

A midfield of Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Lallana, Allen and Can (I personally think it would be best if Suso went out on loan to a PL side that plays similar football (Southampton, Swansea etc). For CDM, we have Gerrard and Can, with Allen also being able to play there. Henderson, Allen and Can can all play as the engine of the midfield, with Lallana and Coutinho both good enough to start as the Cam, with Sterling also being capable of playing there. Markovic is a winger that can also play as a second striker/ deep centre forward, so he wouldn't affect any outgoings in midfield. I'd imagine one of Suso and Teixeira would go on loan, with the one staying, mainly playing in cup competitions.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I would definitely take 4th, make sure we continue in the Champions League. With 2 seasons in a row in the competition, we may just be able to attract and afford even more players to keep improving. I would still love a title push though, and finishing above MU again!

I think Allen will be really important in the European away games, when we need to keep it tight, play a midfield 3 and keep the ball.

To be a proven premier league goal scorer for two seasons running at only 21 years old is great achievement. I agree there is room for improvent, but he will only get better.

He would be a good option to have.

Red Rum

Agree4 Disagree0

I think there's a reason why Chelsea loaned him out last season when they were desperate for strikers and also why Origi (the unknown 19 year old from Lille) was played in front of him in the World Cup.

Agree2 Disagree0

Seemed disinterested to me in the World Cup when he was involved. Maybe he spat his dummy out as not being first choice? If that's the case, it's hardly a good choice for Liverpool

Would rather sign Balotelli for the same fee

Agree0 Disagree2

I couldn't stand signing either of them.
They both go from being unplayable to enigmatic from week to week. Both Balotelli and Lukaku are sensational on their day but when they're having an off day its like being down to 10 men they're so lazy and lethargic.
Lukaku might just need to be shown a bit of love at a club that matches his ambitions, like us. However, from what Iv seen of him at West Brom and Everton i'd rather out attentions go elsewhere, his goal scoring record is fine, its his work rate that wouldn't suit our pressing game.

This may simply be a cathartic post drunken ramble to make me feel better about losing our best player but here goes.
I believed that Suarez was only going to stay for one more season anyway, he was always tempted by Spain's big two.
He is suspended for four months of a nine month season.
Financially I think we have done well. He is suspended from any pre season so we wouldn't have made any extra income from his presence in fixtures anyway. He was on £200,000 per week . Over this four month period the club would have had to pay him around £3.5 mil for basically sitting on his bottom. If the figures reported are true then in my strange brain we are £75 mil +£3.5mil =£78.5 mil better off by selling a player who was perhaps only ever going to play for us for another five months and by the time he was eligible to play we may well have been out of cup competitions and falling short in the Prem. Added to this there was always the risk that if he were to re offend in a similar fashion his value would plummit dramatically. If we spend well then there is every chance we will be a much stronger squad for it. what a player though.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Good point. I think financially it was very good business from the club. We will be ok without him.

P.S. That post drunken ramble made more sense than my post drunken ramblings yesterday haha.

Would like someone who could play upfront or wide. Personally think Yarmolenko would be a great buy and not too expensive. El sharaway would be an option but think that's a bit of a pipe dream!

Bony all day long!

Of the 4 mentioned it would be Lukaku.

Red Rum

Rodroguez is the best player in that list.
Bony is alright as is Benzema.
Wouldn't touch Lukaku with a barge pole, I don't even know any Toffees who want him back due to the fact he has one purple patch a season and then goes missing for the other 6/7 months.

Can we have a sensible debate please and no putting down the Ed's if they decide to make a comment which I hope they will.

Last set of posted figure's showed that the club was losing £1 million every week.

I know commercial sales have increased and we have also secure some hefty sponsorship deals in the last year or so.

Also TV revenue has increased for us significantly and the money we will receive from a run in the CL will be considerable.

We have sold Suarez for quite a large sum of money too.

I also know that the squad was thin last season. And because of extra games from CL we needed to bulk the squad out BUT surely we have not turned things around that significantly we have the amount of money to spend that is being quoted in the press?

We have spent (if Origi and Markovic are signed) the money from Barca for Louis. And still we are linked with £50-£60 plus million worth of players.

I know that the club is now run on a pretty much sounder financial basis than it was previously, but have we really improved that much we can afford to spend this amount of cash without contravening FFP?

I know this is a touchy subject and you will always get some ar5e having a go at your replies.
I am just getting concerned with the amount of cash we are spending on players.

I don't think you need to worry. Fsg wouldn't do anything to put the club in jeopardy so relax :)

13 Jul 2014 08:49:20
I believe FSG probably don't want to throw their money away again . I am not an expert but as long as we look at the FFP implications ,so be it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally, as long as the club are in a stable condition, I will be happy. I know we are not quite there, but FSG are doing a good job which will only benefit the club in the long run.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

I am 100% behind FSG. They have invested substantially since there arrival.
Have move significantly on the redevelopment project.
We have a sound basis from management down to move forward again this season.
I just don't see, from being a million a week in debt, we have increased our revenue significantly enough to spend the cash that we are doing.
I know, there are going to be more out goings in the coming weeks, I just don't want last seasons improvement to come back and bite us at the end of this coming season because we fail FFP.

vrcomp

If we fail the Ffp then Fsg should be for the high jump. It is their job to make sure is all correct. I can't see them making such a cock up.

{Ed001's Note - no idea, not sure how a number on the back of the shirt matters? Surely all that matters is the Liverbird on the front??}

Well I want to purchase a jersey with sterling name and number on it, and since they are so expensive I would rather wait and see! But thanks for info

{Ed001's Note - ah ok, yeah I would never recommend getting a player's name on a shirt. Last time I got one was God and he left just after! I always get JFT 96 on my shirts.}

13 Jul 2014 07:18:56
exactly same thing with me but with torres lol! Thing is I hate getting jersey just plane, nothing on the back
Thanks

Agree0 Disagree0

Why did players start to get their names on the back? Was this a marketing ploy? Back in the old days, when I was a lad, there was just number a 7 and everyone knew it was Dalglish's shirt.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes, it was a Premier 'Greed is Good' League move to improve merchandising income.}

13 Jul 2014 08:04:04
I used to have a thing about getting the names of players I believed were unsung heroes, however, I got Arbeloa and then they sold him, I got Insua, they sold him. I also had a extensive argument with a girl in jjb when I asked for Cole (yes, Joe, dashed hopes there) then I went next door for something to eat. When I came back and it said J.Cole 7 I was livid. Did try explaining he was going to wear 10 and that his shirt would just have Cole as there are not any other Cole's in our first team. She simply told me I shouldn't have left without watching her do it.
So I learnt from my lesson and no longer get any name.

Agree0 Disagree0

I always tend to buy Gerrard for obvious reasons.

I have a brilliant plan around the whole shirt buying thing. Me and my dad have season tickets, but living in London sell them back to the club or to friends most weeks. But, because my birthday's on 3rd September, we always go to the first home match of September (unless it's a Sunday fixture and my playing team have an early league match (sorry.getting waylaid!) Anyway what I do is after the match I buy our Man of The Match (in my view)'s name on the back of the shirt.
In the last two I've had Allen, which earned a fair bit of banter, and then Jordan for his performance against United. I got slated at the time buy now I feel oh so smug every time I put on that shirt! Hoping I can bring good luck to another player this seas, as I did with Hendo!

Question for Ed1 if you are about. I posted the other day about Péter Gulácsi and how he has had an excellent season at Salzburg prompting interest from Stoke and Saints. I always thought he'd be a good keeper given a chance and now seems to be proving that. My question then: are there any Liverpool players in recent times that you feel we have let go to early and that you would like back at the club? Further to that if we let Suso go then do you think we might live to regret it?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I was just going to jump in with God, but then thought about it and realised it wasn't that recent, it just still rankles with me!! Other than that, our main problem has been the incomings just haven't been good enough, rather than letting them go too soon. I would say Gulacsi would never have developed as well if he had stayed, he would not have got the first team football he needed. So I am not so sure we did let him go too soon, despite the fact he was obviously a good young keeper. Personally I think that you have to let good young players move on and find themselves a club they can get regular first team football, if there is no chance of them getting it with you.}

The thing with Salzburg is that they are by far the best team in the Austrian Bundesliga. They are like Celtic up in Scotland. No disrespect to Gulacsi, but he would need to move to one of the elite leagues, before we can judge his improvements.

On another note we was linked with Kevin Kampl in January, who looks quality for Salzburg, but likewise it is difficult to judge players in that league

Thanks for the reply Ed1. In thinking about your answer Ed1 with players needing to move on to fill their potential; Is there a reason why British clubs don't use buyback clauses and thus circumventing the problem? Apologies if that has been covered before. At a guess I suppose there's a legal problem with buyback clauses in UK.

Why do people keep asking for positions to be filled where we already have 4 to 5 players already covering there? We have flanno Johnson McLaughlin Kelly and wisdom . Personally I think Johnson should be sold he has no interest in football and is terrible . If we get a good left back I think young flanno should be promoted to our first choice rb he very rarely let us down last year. Wisdom and McLaughlin should be sent on loan and keeping Kelly to try nurture his way back into the team . I don't believe Kelly will come back to the player he once looked like he could be. Seems to be very sluggish and has beefed up significantly during his lay off . Don't think there is a need for a rb what so ever
