I don't know if its just me but I think that with the height and passing ability of Luis Alberto he should be converted to a CM.

He played there today against Preston alongside Pacheco with Lucas sitting behind them (in an inverted triangle middle three).

He seem suited for that role more than if he were playing at AM or LW.

His responses were good, made tidy passes but also penetrating passes & also made runs into the box from deep.

After 1 preseason friendly and first game for the club against Preston Your wanting to change his position!

At last the Team is on the pitch and for all those who pre judged our purchases in the transfer market can see what they bring to our club . It's been hard hearing all the criticism when these guys ain't even played for us yet. So let's just live the dream and have faith because who knows how special the season could be?

I just want to say, its about time the FA 'strengthens' retrospective action on incidents.

I really hope we see the end of dangerous tackles and violent behaviour being unpunished by the FA just because 'the ref saw the incident and didn't take any action at the time'

We shall see.

This will apply to everyone but the FA favourites, Man U, Spurs,

I posted here last week to say that we were close to signing Mickey unfortunately I was wrong and hold my hands up. I also said that Suarez would still be at Liverpool next season & I stand by those words. The club would be crazy to sell & they know it he is our best chance of CL football next season. The club hold all the cards and I think they will stand by their guns and keep Suarez and sell next season if CL is secured or not. EDS what do you think? Also, any news on the Canos and Chirivella signings? Apparently Canos has just about signed and we're still talking to Valencia about Chirivella, but I can find no confirmation anywhere.

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has turned down a move to Norwich City, according to the player's agent.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from Ajax all summer, with the likes of Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen credited with an interest in his services.

Good performance from the lads today encouraging signs with aspas, Alberto, sterling and Ibe putting in strong performances. Am I the only one who thought that Pacheco wasn't too shabby?

A great start to our pre season today, team looked sharp especially in the first half!

All of the new guys did well today, Alberto providing some nice short and long passes from deep, Aspas with good movement and a decent goal, Toure showing his leadership and ball carrying and Mignolet keeping a clean sheet with a couple of stops, he was also very vocal on the pitch and in organisation which was good to see.

Standout performers today for me were Sterling, Coutinho and Toure.

Ibe played well with his movement and directness and scored a nice goal, but he needs to work on his composure when passing, but hey I'm knit picking here as it was his 2nd appearance for the first team.

Onwards and upwards well done the lads today!

Went to the game today against Preston, enjoyed it seeing the new signings play etc! there was a lot if talk about Luis Suarez at the game! Everyone was saying that there is already a deal in place with Real Madrid! I got a programme and there was a page of all the Liverpool players profiles and Suarez wasn't even on it! The players that weren't playing were like Coates, Reina, sturridge but no Suarez! Coincidence? I think not! Watch this space! I remember going to the anfield shop and Suarez wasn't on the kop stand picture in the new kit! Just hope we sort it out soon and not wait until the last few days of the transfer window!

Good match today and nice to see LFC on a pitch playing again. Individual performances aside and trying not to read too much into a fairly benign preseason friendly, I would say that what we saw today is nearly a million miles from how we started in Toronto last season. Passing, movement, touches were all very sharp compared to last year so I find that encouraging.

Unsurprisingly Borini appears to be getting a bit of stick again. Yes he probably should have done better with what was a very good chance but to be fair his link up play was pretty good and he had a touch or two in the box that were very good. Most impressed with Aspas- his pass out to Sterling was brilliant and although his goal should probably not have got past the keeper it was incredibly well hit. Coutinho was amazing as always. Overall a very solid performance and I for one think we are in for a pretty good show every game.

Borini is trying too hard to impress. He's a good player but needs to relax more and play his natural game.

I've been saying for ages that Borini ant hit a barn door- he showed it again today- hopefully BR will realise from theses friendly that he is not PL quality and give him back to some Italian club willing to pay half of what we bought him for

Raheem was a revelation today. Now he's got his Court Case and injury behind him I reckon he'll be like a new signing this season.

the amount of players we have is unreal, besides the keepers today we had 22 players and we had gerrard/suarez /sturridge/ Enrique /quates missing. we need to trim the squad and bring in 2 defenders, I would sell quates/skrtl /spearing/ assaidi and flanagan/ robinson will never reach the level required. I heard br talking after the game abt how he wants to play and I am afraid henderson will be next to leave.

Speaking of, anyone have any insight on Enrique? I get why Gerrard and Sturridge weren't there and the situation with Pepe/Coates/Suarez is pretty well obvious, but where was Enrique?

Disagree about Flanagan and Robinson, they are still young and will come good, I would keep Skrtel as well, unless we can pick up two top quality defenders, the squad does need trimming, we have somewhere around 38 players that could play for the first team!

Trim the squad? get out of here, we would be in the same situation we were in at the beginning of last season.

interesting point made by the commentator.during the game especially for all them lucas haters.the only game we lost out of our last 13.was the only 1 lucas didn't feature in.really important to the team.

Lucas is for me the BEST DM in the premier league.

Last season we had Suarez running on all cylinders from the first whistle yet we only started to win games and concede less when Lucas came back.

Went to PNE to watch. Glad I did.

MotM: Jorden Ibe - Quality beyond his years.

Borini as usual was poor and this boy is not, never will be good enough for
vauxhall conference nevermind prem. We should give him away before he costs us
another weeks wages. He is hopeless!

Welcome Aspas: Positional play and passing was very good. Good goal too!

Luis Alberto looks like he needs time.

Sterling: As usual, quick, accurate and tricky. Excellent.

Kolo: Welcome to LFC. Solid without much pressure and good delivery.

Phillipe was solid too. In general LFC played steadily with good possession.
Passing was superb and movement was very good.

4-0 but should have been more.

I liked the look and feel of the team. Good times I suspect!

LFC have been quick to spend money on youngsters, notably Luis Alberto, but also Borini/Allen/etc. I understand that our valuation of Ilori is not as high as Sporting's, but what's with our hesitancy to offer more money when it is clear that we do rate the player? Mignolet was in goal and Ward substituted him in 2nd half. Ibe was great, he scored a nice goal and was strong on the ball.

Mignolet played 80 mins, Ward played the last 10. Ibe was pretty decent when he was on. then Sterling came on to show him how its done!

You are joking you are actually judgeing borini with his under 21 performance get a grip. As for first match of season I don't think so remember he's played in an under21 comp therefore should be at full steam. The barn door is very safe from todays efforts.

Ward did well and showed good composure when called upon and made some nice catches with composed handling. Mig's did well for 80 minutes with not much to do, especially in the second half.

His distribution was always short and quick with Toure dropping very deep to receive the ball in the first half.

The first half of the game against Preston shows atleast for me that Brendan had a reason not to play Assaidi.He is far behind the other lads in the game today atleast for me, missed most of the balls going his way.Not nearly as involved in the build-up as Ibe who was all over the place and working his socks off.
Go on young lad!

Ibe was fantastic, hope to see more of him and Dani Pacheco this season.

Liverpool are seeking to sell pepe reina to arsenal and it could happen next week. personally happy if it was the case we would miss how good he is with his feet but mistakes too much. u watch them against preston and u say that eriksen would suit Liverpool to a t! a rotational front 3 or 4

can somebody explain to me why brendan can not just say to saurez look you have 3 more years left on contract your not going full stop .if we do not hold onto suarez we will struggle again this season.

Suarez scored a lot less in the 2nd half after Sturridge/Coutinho came in the side. I don't think he'd get near 30 playing wider like he was (and where he would likely be playing this season was he not probably leaving).

The way I look at it is its better to have a few players to score goals than one. One player in Suarez can score 30 goals a season. Other players we are bringing in with the Suarez money, could get 40 goals between them next season which is better for the club and its reputation. Just my views of course. Cheers.

We didn't fall apart at the end of the season without Suarez, goals will come from elsewhere. United and City have strikers on a par with Luis, but teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs still managed to score goals and win games. Think about it, if our defense was solid as a rock and we conceded no goals all season we would only need to score a 38 goals to win the league - sounds silly, but it's a team game, everyone plays their part, and as much as I love Suarez and he had an awesome season (when playing), he can be selfish and the rest of the team rely on him too much. If the money we got for him was reinvested we could bring in 2 or 3 quality players that can boost the defense, bring some goals from midfield as well as a replacement striker who could contribute as well, thus improving the team. I don't mind if he stays or goes, but if he does go I def won't miss his off field antics tarring the good reputation of our club. Let's face it, nothing wrong with supporting our own player but if he was Utd's striker we would absolutely detest him.

i wonder what sort of season jonjonjo's going to have, its a real shame I realy thought he was going to gerrards future replacement
Rodgers also had big hopes for him at the beginning of last season.
i just hope it doesn't come back to bite us, maybe a full seasons out on loan would of been a better option to see if he could step it up.

Jonjo just wasnt good enough not fit to lace stevie g boots if i'm honest never saw him put two good back to back performances in .

Never rated him personally. Always lacked the workrate, decision making, and discipline any time I saw him play. Obviously talented but not LFC quality.

I am extremely confident it won't come back to bite us. He just wasn't up to standard. I feel the same has to be done with Flanagan and Spearing too.
Robinson on the other hand I think can be really good but needs a loan to a quality Championship side.

Ed do you know if Texeira is also training with the 1st team?
He is another one who think should get a chance this season especially with Suso going on Loan. {Ed052's Note - I think he is, a lot of the youngsters are. A loan is possible, as he wont get much first team action}

I have a gut feeling (not based on anything) that we may strike gold with Suarez, I have no idea why I think this but I reckon we could potentially get Higuan and Alonso for Suarez. RM seem keen on offloading the pair and have interest in Suarez. Don't think we would get any money for them but think our 1st team would be better for it.

Just watching highlights of last season.
Must say I'm very excited to see how Coutinho does this season.
He has huuuuge potential, already a fine player but he could be as good as anyone we've ever had at LFC.
He seems to have it all already at only 21, even started working hard to win the ball back a couple of games into his LFC career.
Looks like the real deal!

Thr good thing is your not putting loads of pressure in the lad to be your savior :-)

Must admit I'm a bit worried about 2nd season syndrome. He is being massively hyped by most.

I think the key to getting the best out of Coutinho is keeping Lucas fit and in the first team, which will give Bucko Boyo a bit of an eadache, we've all ready seen Shelvey ruthlessly executed, more exits, keep hold of Henderson, and Stevie Gerrard to teach Henders the finer points of distribution, if it clicks this season, the sky is the limit, no doubt, anyway the sun is blazing the reds are on the telly there's cold beer in the fridge what's not to like about it, I can feel it in the air tonight.

If you saw the highlight you would agree that skrtl should never wear the shirt again.75% of the goals before carra took over were his fault.

Hi eds. Do you know if the were any conditions in the sale of Shelvey that could see him in a red shirt again if he performs well, i.e "buy back" clause? I would like to think we have learned from the Tom Ince saga. Thanks {Ed002's Note - I wouldn't think so. Ince's contract ran down.}

Not entirely sure that's true ed, he was released from his contract and a compensation deal was agreed between the two clubs involving a percentage of his future sell on fee {Ed002's Note - The £50k or whatever compensation deal related to his age and being trained by Liverpool as a youth player. If he was "released" from his contract then Liverpool would not be in a position to negotiate anything. As I have said on numerous occasions I have no idea what the provisions of his contract are.}

Does anyone else think that Martin Kelly will be pushed forwad to cover RW this season?

In the same vein as GJ, he seemed better going forward than actually defending in the 11-12 season, while Wisdom showed some real strngth at the back. We still have McLaughlin, who shows real promise, and Jon Flannagan fits in somewhere.

2" taller than Gareth Bale, he has real pace and could be the answer to depth up front that we need, with Downing getting on a bit and probably moving on, and Alberto may not be ready for first team PL season right away.

this dedution is, of course, based on how his new hairstyle makes him look like Edinson Cavani.

Kelly doesn't have the skill for RW mate. Can be a brilliant CD in our system if he can stay fit.

Do you expect Liverpool to renew any interest in Ince now that he has decided to turn down Cardiff's offer. Correct me if I'm being an person, but if Blackpool accepted 8mil from Cardiff and Liverpool apparently get 50% of the sell on fee, could we swoop in now and get him for 4mil, or does it not work that way? Or are Liverpool simply no longer interested in the player? Would appreciate any insight you guys have.

Burak Yilmas is on the Radar supposedly from Galatasaray. I've just watched the "complete striker" clip on YouTube. Based on that and yes I know they only show the good bits, BUT he does have some really good striker qualities/awareness/touch/vision and at 27 years old he is, in my opinion the perfect partner for Sturridge and replacement for Suarez.

I can't see us signing a replacement for Suarez, I believe we have already signed him.
Other positions are being looked at rather than a striker, regardless of Suarez leaving.

Agree. Aspas and Sturridge for CF. We need a pacy quality wide forward or 2 that score goals. Play Coutinho as AM. I also think we need a top notch DM to compete with Lucas.

1) Burak Yilmaz
2) Christian Eriksen
3) Bernard

The Belgian from Ajax is a possibility but don't fancy getting any of the rest.
Yilmaz - scores goals but not proven at highest level consistently.
Erikson - likes to talk more than play, comes across arrogant and selfish.
Bernard - don't think we can afford him, he was priced at 25m at the start of the year before appearances at Confederations cup so that will have increased. His club's chairman quoted this in January I believe.

Yes but if we sign one of them they will be in our league ;-)

Don't know about you but I don't think I like the idea of loaning Suso especially to la liga, it will be hard to keep when he has the attention of a lot of clubs (which is inevitable);I thought he was ready to second coutinho at least this coming season as a natural CAM plus he has a unique way of moving with the ball almost as if there's no ball at his feet (like slicking thread through a needle)

Don't forget he's only 19, he needs a full season playing week in week out at a high level, he will come back twice the player he is now and if he doesn't you know he's not capable of making the step up.

I think its perfect for him, he is spanish as well so may like going back home to play for a year with regular football. Jdog

He will be an important player for us when he returns, Coutinho spent 6 months on loan at Espanyol and that's why we bought him in the first place, his impressive form for Espanyol.
He has a 5 year contract! He will Not remain in Spain, that's nonsense.

Good news! Murmurs from the corridors of anfield (well from a member of the medical team) is that they should be ready to conduct a couple of medicals in the coming week or two. Rumour is that we are competing with Roma for Erikkson. With the loss of Mickey, the club will be doing everything to make sure we don't lose out on Erikkson. Rodgers has stated (this is common knowledge) the one area he wants to improve for the first team is the AM position, Erikson is the 1st choice (younger, more potential etc) but the back up plan is Rakitic from Sevilla (Rakitic is disillusioned at the fact that the best players are leaving and feels Sevilla due to their crippling financial position do not have the ambition that he wants).
If Suarez goes we are definitely getting another striker. Sturridge is extremely highly thought of, but the club also wants to ease his burden and with his history of injuries they want to make sure he is managed correctly. In addition, Suarez scored 30 goals last season (roughly) and Brendan wants to add another 20 goals on top of the goals we scored last season. The signings of Aspas, Alberto, signing an AM and return of Borini it is hoped will cover 20 goals plus, but the club are realistic that to expect them and sturridge to also to cover the contribution of Suarez will be expecting too much. Yilmaz has been scouted extensively and is highly regarded and fits the bill, but it all depends on price due to his age. 15 million is the max we will bid for him.(I would love another striker if Suarez leaves - the top clubs all have 4 strikers and I feel Aspas and co are better suited in the attacking positions behind the main striker).
Jorginho is being viewed as being a Creative DM (in the mould of Pirlo). But Verona are playing hard ball and delaying tactics, they know AC Milan have scouted Jorginho.
CB was a priority, but with the likelyhood of Skrtl staying (his wages have put off a lot of clubs - it seems the only option potentially is one of the Moscow clubs), this has been put on a back burner for the moment as we are pretty well stocked in that department. This will only change if Schalke drop their price on Popadum. At the moment Illori is a big target (replace Coates) but with Sporting holding out for a bigger price (hoping other clubs come into play) and their problems with Bruma (potential termination of contract, legal proceedings etc) it seems that Sporting have a lot on their plate and the club is in disarray. Expect this saga to continue, but hopefully we will get our man for 6 million.
Downing is someone who has interested clubs (West Ham the obvious one - and well publicised) but Rodgers recognises his improvement and that he fought to get back into the team. His sale will only be sanctioned if we get a relatively good offer (8/9 million minimum).
LB - Cissokho is being viewed to give Enrique competition - not replace - but Liverpool playing the waiting game, they know he wants to come to Liverpool and Valencia like most Spanish clubs have money issues - 4 million.
PS - expect the Suarez saga to get interesting. PSG will come in (Ibra not happy with the signing of Cavani and the fact that Ancelloti has left - he's thrown his toys out of the pram and he isn't answering any of Blanc's calls - the club have even given Ibra an extended break so he can return to training later - but fear he is engineering a move away - Man City?! - Real aren't a possibility as it seems Ancelloti has an agreement not to sign any players from PSG - Ibra would like to come to the UK - he's annoyed he's never been rated here - he does have an ego)
The transfer merry go round is going to get very interesting over the next few weeks.

They are Sturridge, Borini and Aspas. For me, we have enough cover for when Suarez sods off. Why spend money on a position we don't need any more players for?
As for your other comment I do believe we need 11 first team players. We would get beat if we fielded less and I'm pretty sure there is something in the rules which means we can't field any more than 11.

Draxler is not a possibility. he doesn't want to leave - and has a 39 million euro buy out clause

2 things, one he is not the new Ballack as he is a completely different style of footballer.

Second, he has a £38mil release clause.

That went down by a million in no time.
At this rate we could get him for a packet of biscuits in half an hour, nice one.

I don't think that Real Madrid will go for Suarez! I think that higuain will stay and they won't need him! They have bought isco and that young Spanish lad up until now!

Ed's, I have heard that Madrid are lining up a Higuain +cash for Suarez. At first I didn't think anything of it but several weeks back Arsenal were about to sign him and there is no news since. What is the chances of this happening? If Liverpool were able to get enough cash to fund an Eriksson move, Higuain+Eriksson for Suarez is a great deal of business, definitely top 4 discussion.
