i think i speak for most fans today why was jordan henderson picked over Dirk kuyt? a must win game in my eyes to give us a great confidence boost when going the emirates next week.. im sorry but kenny got that decision badly wrong an i will stand by what i said when we bought henderson hes garbage an will be a major liverpool flop, went missing in the game, hardly touched the ball, when he did pass the ball there was no mvement off the ball from him and i know the eds r saying u cant judge him from 1 game but i watched him for england an he was exactly the same its one player KK an DC have got very very wrong wont last 2 seasons i think and charlie adam will be r best buy this season..... asin his price was low an i think he will shine at liverpooli know we willplay better this season but dropping dirk was a stupid decision an am still flabergasted at the choice bad bad mistake..... an i think flano was right to be picked over kelly because Kelly has look suspect at the bk in pre season... flano is young an will make mistakes he will learn from those mistakes and will make him a better player sorry for the down beat attitude to this but it was a good game just henderson needs to be on the bench an see how he gos. cheers

are main opposition for 4th arsenal didnt exactly play well today they only drew so i think next week is the most important a must win game.if we are in top 5 and only 3-6 points off top by xmas i will be happy.remember the king had 4 new signings trying to mix it wid lucas and suarez who came back late.i think we should be ok next week.also we were without johnson skrtel and gerrard so not a bad resuly.DORSET RED

This is the best we've played for a long time. Could have been up 4-0 at halftime. Carroll's goal should have stood. How many times will Suarez miss a penalty. Downing's effort off the cross bar would have been a candidate for goal of the season had it went in. He should link up nicely with Gerrard. The kids are alright. They'll be fine in time.

I liked the look of Jose Enrique today.
He's a big, strong lad with a real turn of pace.
I can't see him getting beaten on the outside too often.
I know it's very early days and all that, but that looks like a very decent £6m spent there.
When he gets bedded in, I can see him offering pace and width up top too.
Him and Downing on the left will give us something extra that we haven't had there for a long time.

Does KK see Adam Morgan as part of the first team squad this year could be 4th choice this season or even Ecclestone?

A lot of players out there today looked short on fitness and
I think we did not get enough pass and move together. But
I think there are lots of positives. Firstly we could have easily
won the game - Adam should be taking penalties, Carrol's goal
could of been given, the big fella showed great first touch bringing that down on his chest. Sunderland's goal, defensive error, completly on his own in the penalty area - fatal mistake by Flanno not keeping tight. I thought Enrique looked class for
someone only a liverpool player a couple of days. Early days yet.

Give Flano a break. Everyone is asking why Kelly wasn't playing, but did anyone watch the preseason when Kelly repeatedly was late stepping up to challenge shots? Yes I would have liked to see Kelly, he is a better player with more composure going forward which really would have benefited Henderson going forward, but I suspect Kelly wasn't playing due to a slight injury or lack of fitness. Give Larsson some credit. It was a great volly/bicycle that was tough to cover for any defender as it was fading away from the goal. I think the bigger problem had to be general team fitness as it is the only explanation for the poor play in the second half. Suarez went from being a world beater the first 45 to disappearing in the 2nd half (I wish he had been pulled off earlier for Aquaman, but he wasn't on the bench). Kuyt should have come on for Henderson earlier too. I really look forward to seeing Gerrard take Henderson's spot in a few months. Downing, Carroll, Suarez, and Gerrard in attacking roles is as frightening a proposition as any lineup in the prem.

Guys we haven't anything to worry about. Yeah the second half wasn't as good as the first but we showed a lot of promise. We have Johnson and betrays to come in and luis is only going to get better when fitter. Bring on those gunners, a great time to play them and a good chance to break our duck at the their place. Let's keep the faith and look forward to a successful season

Extra note I wouldnt mind an out and out winger for the right hand side and one more forward. The plus side all the new signings did well today.
Cheers

Hi Ed,

I don't think today is as bad are people are making it out to be, we never start well in the league but I still reckon we will win the title, the team look really good(we haven't had a team for 20years, just individuals) just a couple more games to gel and we will be alright.

On the Cahill situation would he get into the Liverpool 11? I would have Carra and Agger infront.... would he want to Sit on the Bench?

How do you reckon Liverpool will do this season?

What do you think about the game today?still nobody on the wings and need a cb and a cf these need to be top players. 2 win anything this season

{Ed001's Note - I think Flanno was left on to learn and because it would have damaged his confidence to come off. Sometimes you just have to accept bad performances from youngsters and let them suffer through it so they learn. As for right wingers, like I said all along I don't see us playing with a right winger but a right midfielder. More of a Ray Houghton on the right, someone to play narrow when needed but get out wide to whip in a cross when they can. I just wonder if that is where Gerrard is seen as playing, he is a fantastic crosser of the ball, quick and strong, he is also excellent in the air and got a good shot around the edge of the box.}

Spot on Ed, Flanno had a bit of a mare, but certainly a learning curve for him and most certainly would have knocked his confidence if Kenny had brought him off.

13 Aug 2011 21:15:41
I'm stating the obvious here, but if Suarez scores his penalty then we go in 2-0 up & it becomes a completely different game in the second half. Also why wasn't Richardson not sent off? Weird decision

That aside, I thought we were brilliant in the first half. Downing, Adam, Enrique & big Andy all looked really good. I was a bit stunned by Flanno starting in front of Kelly, but we will play a lot worse than that & win this season.

Anyway, at least we played some really good football, but you gotta put them away from 12 yards with only the Kepler to beat Luis

Hi eds ,I respect your opinion about
not replacing flanagan but I do not
agree ,the whole Idea is to WIN the
game if it was a preseason I would
say fine and leave him in BUT this
season is going to be really tough &
ever missed point or (penalty) is
going to count and I wouldnt like to
finish in the top four Id like to win IT
and to do that their is no room for
sentiment. {Ed001's Note - I understand what you are saying, but sometimes you have to look further ahead than just one game. What Flanno has gone through today is a learning experience that will stand him in good stead for the next ten years.}

To all you under age half wits that are whinging about todays result. Okay I know I may have used proper words, so you probably haven't understood a word I've said so far. Rome wasn't built in a day As other posters have said this team have hardly played together. So for f***s sake stop your bitchin'. I've followed the 'reds' for over 35yrs through the good times and the bad times It's a 38 game season, so to those who think it's over all ready f*** off and become a manc

do u think cahill will sign yes or no {Ed001's Note - not for us I don't, no. But that is just my opinion, I don't have any knowledge of his situation at Bolton other than City and Arsenal moves not materialising so I am basing my opinion on that.}

People seem to be treating the draw as a lose

13 Aug 2011 20:34:13
hi ed quick ?why did we sign henderson ,is he gerrards future replacement and lucas in the team i really dont like this player gives me the feeling he midtable player dont get me wrong he is a very solid player in his own way he is more suited to blackburn or west brom and henderson is not and never will be again sold for 16 to 20 mill dat is a definate loss and by the way i like most of our squad i just want 2 c the best for liverpool ,also against arsenal would love 2 c a strong first 11 on the pitch and a strong bench aqua has to be part of the team for that game differences aside........ {Ed001's Note - bit harsh to say that about a lad after one game. He is a young lad who is very good technically, he has a damn good cross on him and can shoot. I am not sure you can truly replace a player like Gerrard, not like for like, you just alter the way you play to suit other players instead of him.}

Hi eds ,It was mentioned earlier that
miereles was brought on so downing
could help flanagan(who needed it)
why not bring on kelly.also we are
really short of attacking players it
never ceases to amaze me how ALL
the fans realise we need a right
winger and the management buy
midfielders who today seemed lost.
After spending a 105 MILLION the
owners must be tearing their hair out
wouldnt you.never mind there is
always next season(joking) {Ed001's Note - I think Flanno was left on to learn and because it would have damaged his confidence to come off. Sometimes you just have to accept bad performances from youngsters and let them suffer through it so they learn. As for right wingers, like I said all along I don't see us playing with a right winger but a right midfielder. The commentator on Setanta said Adam was playing the quarterback role this afternoon; We must be playing american football at Anfield now...? Shame about today's result, especially after dominating the first half but still it's early days and I'm well up for the season now mouthwatering...

First things first. I have never seen the league won in August. For those of you who have given up already, good luck to you as you must have a dim outlook on life.
I thought today showed tremendous cause for optimism for the future. With a bit of luck the game could have been won by half time. During that time there were some highly encouraging performances coupled with some that were decidedly more average. Personally, I thought Suarez was found wanting at times and his touch not as perfect as normal. The 2nd half was less coherant and we tired. Mistakes happen when you are tired. But I can assure all those who doubt our chances that the team that looks on top form and potential worldbeaters this early in the league will not win it. You cannot sustain that type of form throughout the course of the season.
However, I am much more encouraged by our performance this afternoon than Arsenals. Next week will be the perfect time to play them and I suggest anyone who likes a bet should lump on Liverpool.

I think we played very well in the first half and less so in the second, and I also think all teams today after the 70th minute looked tired, you could tell suarez was not firing on all cylinders as the game went on , but good overall do not forget sunderland are not a bad side. Your thoughts ed?

hibsylfc {Ed001's Note - I think it is clear that our build up to the season has been hampered by the long trip to Asia, that was not ideal and clearly a mistake in terms of getting off to a good start. But worst of all was the need to play the players we don't want in the hope someone watching would want to sign them. That will also have to be looked at I feel, we needed to play a fairly settled side to allow them to get used to each other's game. Obviously Lucas and Suarez being away and the injury to Gerrard have also hampered us greatly in our preparations. All things considered I guess we should just be looking to build on the first half and looking to learn lessons from the second half. At least we didn't get underway with a defeat, so confidence shouldn't be suffering.}

13 Aug 2011 20:08:37
we are unfit because none of our players hardly played pre season

we used player who we have no intention of using very odd and very stupid forget putting them i a shop window we should have been playing them were possible to get fitness and playing together
why give Aqualinia 4 games if not going to use him

13 Aug 2011 20:06:10
Thought we played well today in the 1st half.
2nd half exposed the 3 weakest players Carra ( just not a good enough footballer),Flano ( too young and inexperienced),Henderson ( just ran around looked nervous, probably needs to be eased in slowly) all on the right side.
Sunderlands goal Carra got dragged too far over so did flanno and Henderson just stood there ball watching 2 yds away.
The way we faded not too dissapointed with a point.
Next week would like to see Kelly partner Agger, Johnson back and Kuyt in for Henderson.

Cundy really slating us on sly sports, a broken record saying worried about a team that relies so much on missing player gerrard.

Did he not see a run in last season when stevie was out?

We really get a tough time in the press. We need a seige metality n make a few pundits eat their words.

13 Aug 2011 20:00:43
I agree with the point you made earlier about needing more pace at the back ed001. Do you think we are genuinely targeting Cahill/Dann or will we look to Kelly? Personally I think we could do with buying one of those two and moving Kelly into the center because of Agger and Kelly's injury records. Appreciate your thoughts.
Anfield Rapstar {Ed001's Note - I did wonder if Kelly was benched to give Flanno the chance to see if he could make RB his own. That way Kelly could play in the centre, he certainly does have pace.}

13 Aug 2011 19:59:28
Eds just reading your post about cahill and bolton been hard to deal with if they were to continue been difficult and no 1 matched there valuation dont you think near the end of the transfer window or january they may be prepared to take less or risk losing him on a free surely bolton would be prepared to take say 13 million and ngog rather than lose him for nothing even with the fact they have to give villa some of the transfer fee surely thay would rather have some money rather than lose him for nothing I just cant see anyone other than maybe man city or chelsea that would pay 17 million and its not like there banging on there door well man city have bid not sure they need him tho
giblet {Ed001's Note - you could be very right there, that would make sense, but they might see losing him as tantamount to relegating their side. Relegation costs a lot more than 17 million.}

Ok it was not a good second half performance and we can probably admit it is two points dropped, let’s hope we’re not looking back on this game at the end of the season and say ‘if only’. Let’s not forget thought that Sunderland beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season and drew with Arsenal at the Emirates.

However, I think the first half performance was encouraging and gives us a glimpse of what we can expect to see in a few games time when all the players are up to fitness and had more time to play with one another. I don’t think it is a coincidence that our second half performance dropped off at the same time as Suarez and Lucas’ fitness started to fade. These two were arguably our best performers last year and both have been playing all summer in the Copa America and have only played 45-minutes between them in the pre-season friendly’s.

As for the selected team – I am sure everyone when they saw the team sheet must have thought the same as me, this is a strong looking team. Surely all these people saying this person or that person should have played (especially ‘Aquaman’ what has this person ever done to be given a super hero type name? he is certainly not impervious to everything but Kryptonite and he doesn’t want to play for our team) must agree that this team, when fully fit, will beat most teams in the league.

I think Henderson will prove his worth when he has a very attacking full-back behind him in Glen Johnson. I think we may see Downing playing more on the right than we might of expected as we saw last season that Suarez like to take up the left-wing position and attack the full-back on the inside. The times he done this today I thought he was taking the space that Downing would liked to have occupied.

So it was a set-back but not a disaster – I think in a few games time we will see the best of this team.

Man U drew 5 of their first 8 games last year, and went on to win the league. Draws were against Fulham, Everton, Bolton, Sunderland and West Brom. Get it in perspective guys. I'm as disapointed as anyone, but I believe in our manager and the team he has assembled.
Time for all the woud be managers out there who want to rubbish KD after one game to start signing your posts. That way you can see your name in lights when the archives come back to haunt you.

We r all disappointed with today's result after a very encouraging 1st half. But alot of positive signs & as fitness comes & the new players gel performances & results will become more consistent.

Kenny is king. But for prob 1st time since he took over I was left bemused by a pick - flanno instead of Kelly? For me not much to choose between Kelly & Johnson.

Nevertheless fellow reds keep the faith n stay positive.

the team we need to play against arsenal, with what we have at the moment

-----------Reina----------------
Kelly-----Carra----Agger-----Enrique
Kuyt------Lucas/Aqualani---Adam--Downing
------------Suarez--Carroll-------

13 Aug 2011 19:53:43
Todays game wasn't that bad at the end of the day its the first game of the season.
Players are still trying to get back upto full fitness which shown in the second half with tired legs.
It's just a shame we didn't get a second goal when we were dominating.
Arsenal next no gervinho and hopefully no fabregas and no nasri.
Good chance to get our 1st win.

We easily could of won that game today if it wouldn't of been for a bit of bad luck with the refereeing (what a surprise there) and the penalty miss. That Carroll goal was easily a goal and should of stood, i don't care what any one says. Carroll hardly put his little finger on the guy but he went down like he'd been shot and hit the deck like a sack of sh*t.

Apart from the disappointment of not getting all three points, there are many positives to take from the performance of some of our new players. I thought Enrique did a grand job in his first game and looked pretty solid. Adam is starting to get in there with some long shots and is showing an essence of the Liverpool spirit which has been lacking for so long. Downing was good, mainly in the first half.

I think with a few more games the teams fitness will start to improve, they will gel a bit more and the results will come. Good results breed confidence. I personally believe we will reach the top four based on the fact that last years squad was inferior to what we had now yet we finished 6th. Anything else would be a welcomed bonus.

So glad the football season is back

Onwards and upwards redmen

What a rubbish penalty its shades of Roberto baggio 1994. Henderson was a unnecessary signing and a waste of money and Adam should be on pens from now on and why was Flanno playing instead of Kelly Cundy is sky sports ripping in to our players and said we are not close to top 4 Why buy British when they are over priced and over rated

I tell you what Ed, I dunno about 50 / 50 challenges, but how mad does Meireles look with that Mohican ?
Lol. You wouldn't want to be bumping in to him on a darkened street or what ?
Maybe this is all part of a new harder approach ?
I think the whole team should get mohicans before we go to Arsenal. Scare the life out of them.
Mind you, Pepe would have to stick his on. Lol.

I have said for along time now, how a certain person dictates how we play at home pulling everyone else back into deep position.He is a rock,a warhorse,The greatest, hardest,Evertonian in the world,who should play for us for the next 20 yrs. It doesn't matter that he gets turned all the time,or that he hoofs the ball all the time, because he can't give himself time on the ball to seek out a pass.We will never win anything anymore,with him in the side,but it doesn't matter.Cause he's a rock.and a legend and he's a legend and he's a legend .So lay off him and don't dare call for him to be replaced by a younger, quicker, defender who can score goals,because he is a legend and have I said he's a legend. Because he is a legend and a Rock,He's a rock legend.

Back home for the weekend went to the game good first half (the sunderland lad should have gone off in the first half) but we were bad in the 2nd Adam, Henderson, Carol were p*** poor, Enrique & Downing well done. It was the first game (we needed a win) Flanno is good but did not get forward may be Kelly? The next month will tell us what the future holds

For me this was the most strange thing. Raul played last season on right coming in and played well and downing did well on left in first. This just killed the game when raul played on left and downing on right we became narrow and started hoofing balls to carroll.

Red indian {Ed001's Note - it was obvious why it was done, clearly Downing provides protection to a full back, Meireles provides none. Flanno was struggling and needed help so Downing was put in front of him to give him that help. Enrique on the other hand was in need of some space to bomb into so Meireles was placed on the left to drag the opposition in narrow to provide the space.}
---------(--------(---------
I agree with you ed that flanno was struggling but raul could also have helped him out. Also enrique getting into space on left also did not happen.we had 35M target man upfront who because of this was left with no service.

In honest we both are right its just 1st game of season.we will get better.

I hope you understand my day ed not the best of days india lost no. 1 spot to england. And then my beloved reds do this.
I just hope ed you are watching arsenal game gerviniho is off wenger is fuming lol.
Red indian {Ed001's Note - you are right it didn't work as it was intended, but that does happen at times. Meireles couldn't have provided protection though, I don't know where you got that idea from, he lacks defensive discipline and doesn't get stuck in. He has a large number of qualities, but protecting a full back isn't one of those.}

Hi, i really hope we get Cahill. And I'd another striker as backup. We should pay what we have to to get Cahill. However include N'Gog and stay at nothing over £15million plus N'Gog. Then we should just try and get a big name striker. No harm in trying for Lavezzi, Tevez, Forlan etc. I mean we could've got Aguero if we put the money in. He is a LFC fan after all. Anyway when Stevie is back this should be the starting XI:
Reina
Johnson, Carra, Cahill, Enrique
Downing, Adam, Meireles
Gerrard, Suarez
Carroll (or the big name if we can)
Suarez could also play left wing or why not swoop for Mata, however we would need to sell Aqua, Degen, N'Gog, Loand Insua out as he has become a stronger and better player. What d'ya reckon eds? {Ed001's Note - there is no chance we would have signed Aguero, not only are his wages obscene but we have a captain with a contract clause that guarantees him parity with the highest earner. So we would have had to nearly double his wage too, then Suarez etc would have looked at it and wanted bigger wages and so on.}

Haha Ed sorry for that essay I just sent in (if it got there) but here, let me summarize in a smaller sense:

All Liverpool "supporters" proclaiming doom and gloom for the season based on the first performance of the season with four new signings in the starting lineup need to get a clue and find the definition of Liverpool Supporter.

Get a clue. All the way over here in America, never set foot on English soil let alone in the city and I feel like a more faithful fan than some of you numpties :/ SUPPORT.

That being said, expect great things this season, and we have plenty to be excited about.

I think the main problem is fitness...in the 2nd half they looked so tired
The first half was awesome, downing and suarez was unlucky
A bit disappointed I admit but I can't understand some so called supporters slating Kenny and the team....maybe they should apply for Liverpool manager job and prove how good they are....
And that Sidney guy....why bother comment on here, I believe you're nothing on the real world

Please tell me you lot are joking about a horrid performance and how it's dooming our season. Get a clue, and SUPPORT the club. You're SUPPORTERS, right?

We played pretty well in the first half, always threatening, always creating, everyone interchanging. It was a joy. Yes, it's a shame that Luis missed a pen. It happens. Richardson should've been off, and a whole game with ten men... that's a whole new ball game. As it is though, we got a point from our first game of the season with FOUR NEW SIGNINGS starting. One of those has had what, one practice with the team?

I hope Gyan is okay, too. He looked pretty pained, could be a muscle injury.

Wes Brown played the best game I've ever seen him play in his entire career. It happens. We've got the entire season.

A must win at Arsenal or we'll be too far behind, I read from another poster. Really? I forgot that United, Chelsea, and City will NEVER draw a game at home all season. NEVER They'll win every single home game and end the season with 120+ points.

(if that happens I might die)

Sorry to rant (no, I'm not) but some of these fickle "supporters" are ridiculous and I for one wouldn't mind them gaining a bit of respect for the club that will hold my heart for eternity. And by the way, I'm born and bred in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and I feel like I'm more of a fan that several of the local lads who post here. Support the club, the players, and expect great things this season.

And is anyone watching Newcastle versus Arsenal? Snoresville.

With Nasri looking like he will complete the move to City in the next day or two, is it possible that we will make a move for Adam Johnson? I really think he is just what we need, a player with some creativity and ability to beat his man. I realize that we will likely have to move a couple players first (Aqua, Poulsen, etc..), and even then I am not sure that City would deal with us. The best chance would be to make our intentions known and hope Johnson requests a move to us.

Good to see most of the posters remaining positive after todays performance. A number of new players together means it may take time to gel and instance success is not a given. We seemed to get very leggy in the second half and as Jan said the first game is always a difficult encounter.

Lets remain positive...

lack of match fitness was to blame today.
we looked really good in the first half before the players became quite clearly tired. we could/should of been 3-0 up by half time. teams will struggle against us this year when we can play 2 halfs of football rather than just the one. we started so many new players today lets be happy with the draw because I for one can see a lot of promise in this team. flanno was found out today so i would expect kelly back there and maybe kuyt back on the right. adam was the best player for me. might turn out to be our best buy.

I can't believe all the negative stuff already. We were great first half, and if Luis had stuck away the penalty, it would have been a landslide at 2-0. Anyway, they got a foothold, and then played really well. Players need to gel, and KK and Stevie need to look at different formations and player positions but we have plenty of options. We'll be alright. Better than last season, at least. YNWA. Steve61.

why is Cahill 18million? {Ed001's Note - because Villa have a sell on clause and so Bolton will only get a small amount from the deal. It wouldn't leave much to buy a replacement.}

we will be fighting for 4 spot this year and if we fail us not buying more this window will turn out to be a mistake.
i give henry all credit for buying the club,but he needs to realise that we are behind and we cannot wait many more years.and nonsense that we have spend 105mil,we have sold 60mil.45 mil isnt alot of money when your behind and lost march too.we need to get the best in the world so forget dann cahill scarcross.those will not make us much better than we are.

L. Suarez and A. Carroll are both not match fit. Suarez is lacking energy, and Carroll just off the pace bit. I would play Suarez and then Swap him Carrol. They should share the position.

Someone needs to inspire in midfield. Hope Charlie Adam can do the job. Maybe give him more responsibility in the team and let him take penalties

Steady on boys, not too bad today.
Some good things, one or two not so good.
Enrique was pretty solid, like his athleticism.
Adam and Downing quite good, especially in the first half. Suarez buzzing in the first half.
We did run out of a bit of steam, and were especially affected with Suarez tiring.
The full backs didn't offer much width going forward.
In reality, we're looking at catching up with squad strength by January next year really.
We're still very vulnerable to injuries to say 3 x key positions - CB, Downing and Suarez.
But we'll still be in there. Need a result next week though.

STOP SLATING ANDY CARROL

guys common we in our team have two X factors one is Suarez and other is carrol
Now Suarez is an individual magician he does not need service from anyone to score a goal he can change it in a second.
Carrol needs service he is a monster imagine him in united team with those wingers he will score bucket loads of goals what we need is service for him its not his fault that we paid 35M for him so stop judging him for that.
And its not carrols fault that our team starts hoofing long balls back to front. Team has to learn to utilize the asset.
Don't judge him on being skilled like messi or fast like young owen he can never be that.
He is a giant who can be handful if used well.
Also Flano is only 19 like I said he needs to learn to defend.

Downing in this game was good in first half but then they marked him like any good team would do thats why I say we need 1 more winger United have Nani, Valencia,Young and giggs.

Our 1 out and out winger is downing.
We need one more pace and trick winger.

1 very important point we have bought lots of very talented players but from mid table teams where drawing or even loosing to a team like Sunderland will be ok just hope kenny changes mentality of these players quickly into those who take responsibility and stand up.

For me what ever happens we have a battle on our hand for fourth with arsenal but we will get it if our team stands up for the shirt.

How long before we start to hear this.

It is only one game, we have 37 to go. I believe that in time the team will get better, plus we still have time to bring in a new player. If we get the champions league spot back this year i will be more than happy.
we can then build on from that, remember its a marathon not a sprint.

Player Ratings

25. Pepe Reina (8)

Looked more solid than ever in Liverpool's goal. His command of the defence and organisation was almost flawless. When called upon he was solid despite some suspect approaches for crosses. Not his fault for the goal.

38. John Flanagan (4)

A young prospect for the future but needs in my opinion 4 years to be somebody who would command the right back slot. His inexperience showed and Steve Bruce capitalised by overloading Sunderland's attack against Flanagan who was exposed with Henderson unsupporting. Needs to carry on improving but looked good in spells.

3. Jose Enrique (7)

To say he had 1 day training to get used to the way we play and our systems, he played well. He was solid and looked like nobody was getting past him today. Linked up brilliantly with Adam and Downing in the first half showing great promise for the season. Second half dropped off but overall was solid.

23. Jamie Carragher (6)

By Carragher's high standards this was an average game for him. He did everything you asked but looked tired and slow. His command of the defence and partnership with Agger looked well asured however.

5. Daniel Agger (7)

To put it simply Liverpool's best centre back. Has the aggression and determination to be a quality centre back who can at the turn of a clock, turn into a defensive midfielder laying off balls with quality passing. Played well today and commanded the defence with Carra.

21. Lucas Leiva (6)

His first half was brilliant. Passing was accurate and his tackling and reading of the game was brilliant. Second half his fatigue from a busy summer showed and he began to get sloppy losing men, giving away fouls and sloppy passing. Needs to work on his fitness.

26. Charlie Adam (8)

Totally dominated the midfield of both teams in the first half. His passing was precise and zipped and his set pieces were also good. His link up play with Downing and Enrique as well as Suarez running into channels was awesome. He dropped off in the second half and the game began to fall away from him but the final 5 to 10 minutes he tried to drag the team to score much like he did at Blackpool.

14. Jordan Henderson (5)

To put it kindly he did the simple things well but never showed any quality that he is worth £16m to £20m. Never showed an attacking potent winger option on the right side forcing Flanagan who likes to attack to stay back. Went missing for long spells in the game and provided no outlet for the team forcing everything down the left side.

19. Stewart Downing (8)

Probobly the best player of the first half. His attacking runs, dribbling, passing and crossing showed everybody why we paid £20m for him. The second half he dropped off dramatically simply because his first half was that good. With the players arounding him fatiguing and performance levels dropped, he couldn't influence the game as much.

7. Luis Suarez (8)

Was at the heart of everything in Liverpool's attacking arsenal. Despite the horrendous penalty that should've been Charlie Adam's he was lively, winning key free kicks and looked sharp. Great positioning for the goal but the second half showed his fatigue from a long summer in the Copa America. I suspect 5 to 6 games before he is back to 100%.

9. Andy Carroll (6)

Tried his best to provide for his teammates but faced a tough battle with a highly motivated Wes Brown. Unlucky not to score for a very soft decision but his link up play with Suarez and his ability to hold up the ball and link up with the midfield was good and looks promising.

18. Kuyt (5): Never really had enough time to impact. Should've started. 4. Meireles (4) Played out fo position and never impacted on anything.

today showed that we still need improving. our midfield was weak, it took sunderland half hour to get to grips with it, then they took control, cattermole throw some hard tackles and lucus was no where to be seen. adams brilliant going forward but has no understanding in denfending. henderson was like a head less chicken. upfront suarez look good but not fit enough yet and as for carrol it look like someone had taken away his talent away like in the spacejam movie. there was no sign of pass and move and there no really sign from the bench that someone there could make a difference.
i also think that daglish is tactically native and not once tried to out think steve bruce who side press high and won ever second ball. something that benitez tought us a long time ago. we were slow and didnt have a clue how to deal with it.
i`m sorry everyone but with arsenal next it going to be a bad start now and it could get worse.

Not sure why downing ended up on the right wing second half and merieles on the left wing? Not the best result but new team and will need some time to gel properly, enrique played calmly and composed for someone who signed 3 days ago. 13 Aug 2011 17:40:51
2nd half peformance was a joke. I said on my Twitter and Facebook that Flanagan would cost us a goal and play awful. Er correct what was Kenny's thinking?

Dirk Kuyt's game would've suited a team like Sunderland so why not play him over Henderson who did absolutely nothing at all. Provided no attacking threat down the right, drifted into the middle all too often instead of hugging the touchline and providing options for the attack. Instead he came inside and crowded the area where Lucas and Adam were operating perfectly.

Suarez clearly is fatigued from his busy summer, still did well. Carroll played well I feel, excellent first half and 2nd half tried his best to rally his team mates who were clearly not as fit as he is. Downing, Adam and Lucas was awesome first half. All 3 slacked off in the 2nd half Lucas the most which I will put also to fatigue from the Copa America. Adam and Downing also seemed tired but lacked inspiration in the 2nd half Adam became revitalised in the final 5 minutes but it was too little too late.

The defence looked solid all game apart from the right back Flanagan. He gave the ball away on numerous occasions, poor defending led to the goal and his lack of experience at this level showed. The main question I will be asking is why not play Martin Kelly? He plays like he has been at this level for 5 or 6 years, 3 times better than Flanagan and would be most fans first choice right back above Johnson. Kelly's attacking prowess as well as his solid defending and all round game is much better than Flanagan and surely should be noted for the next game. Against Arsenal I don't think Flanagan would stand a chance and will surely be a weak spot that opponents will pin point.

wondering why Kenny started Flanagan instead of Kelly , the lad (Falanno) has to learn a lot before playing regularly, he is not up to the task yet , kelly can do a better job
Its early times the signings needs time to bed in Disappointing second half though
Enrique, Adam, Downing did well
I think the title is a bit unrealistic target, top four and a cup will do it for me

First half, sunderland has a kid in the centre, he was builled by Lucas. Shocking play

sunderland had 10 people on the pitch. liverpool should of wraped it up

I like Kuyt in pitch, workrate is great/

13 Aug 2011 17:34:30
How fickle the crowd on here really are, with so many new players starting, not a bad performance. Suarez led from the front, but you saw his work rate drop as he got tired, and that ran through the team.
Dissapointed at the final result but all in all not a bad performance. We looked fairly solid at the back, Seb Larsson's goal would have gone in against most teams, you just have to give it credit.
I still fully expect a re-vitalized performance next week.
Wish everyone who chats a load of nonsense would go elsewhere, moaning that KK has got it wrong orthat our players arent good enough, it takes time to build a team and a winning mentality, get behind your team, fools
*******************************

Why do you say some fans are fickle?We were at home for a start and correct me if I'm wrong but didn't sunderland also have some new boys in their team..............you make it out as if we are the only side who have brought anyone new.

**********************************
As the original poster, the fickle people I was highlighting were those who are all of a sudden saying that KK made bad signings, were terrible and so on, that is fickle. First game of season. Fair enough both sides signed new players, so a draw isnt bad at all. Was pleased with the way Adam and Lucas played together in midfield. Downing and Henderson caused problems.
Enrique was faultless, amazing considering he signed yesterday.
And to everyone saying they are athletes how are they tired, there is nothing like a competitive match to get match sharp, and the players werent quite there. Suarez has travelled round the world in the past month.
Get behind our team, Arsenal next week will be a cracking match,especially with Fabregas and Nasri out, may be a chance for Liverpool to snatch some points before Arsenal sign a midfielder or before their youngsters settle in the role.

we should have won that game, why didnt raul or aquaman play?

I didn't understand the 4-4-2. seemed too simple. I thought we where going to play some magical formation.

I wouldn't played that strategy. Luis Suerzes needs a least one other player on the pitch that is at his level. Able to pass to and from. Get Assist off of.

13 Aug 2011 17:33:05
Andy Carroll...now if i say anything about him then the old lfc faithful supporters will not accept it but the truth is since his 1st match at lfc he hasn't been any great we have been forced(overly relied) to hoof the ball upfront which is not working at all...honestly being 35 mil player doesnt make u a starter and in all seriousness kuyt and suarez form a much better partnership...yes there is room for improvement for AC but at the present moment he certainly doesn't look like bedding into the pass and move football...we desperately need another striker someone who has pace and can also do the heading bit...someone different from AC and Suarez(who looked tired and lack of match fitness)...yes i may not be a football expert(only 17 years) but anyone can see with Andy upfront it just isn't the same LFC as it is without it

Adam and Downing looked amazingly good...Enrique on the other hand had a decent debut but i never understood why was Henderson picked ahead of Kuyt and Flanno/Kelly

Ouch. Not supposed to get too depressed too early in the season, but that one was a huge blow. I pray we sign Cahill. Carragher far to slow, and while Flanagan has promise, he was downright awful today. Whole squad look exhausted....on the first day

13 Aug 2011 17:27:38
Some of you fans need to go support someone else. United always starts off slow, but they learn. We need to do the same.

There was a lot of talent, but a lack of playmaking. Aquilani or Meireles really should have started in place of Henderson, with Suarez playing on the right. And Kelly should have started in place of Flano, who did not have a good game. I believe these voids will be filled with the return of Stevie and Johnson.

And yes we do have to figure something out with Carroll, but it is not his fault. His presence makes it too tempting for the rest of the team to play a long ball into the box in hopes of him getting on the end of it. They should be playing one touch pass. Maybe starting Kuyt would be better.

before everyone starts having a go, we were beaten by the ref. If that is a penalty, richardson is the last man and that should have been red. you look at this game again with sunderland down to ten men after about 10 minutes, completely different outcome.

We are Liverpool, we get behind our players, we do not slag them off. All these people screaming for Aqualini to start, REALLY? would have hindered us. Would have been kicked all over the pitch because he ISN'T premier league standard.

We have had a lot of new blood bedding in today, Enrique done brilliant considering he's had no time training, Downing looked dangerous, Adam looked more than capable and Henderson had a solid outing, bearing in mind, he's not first choice at present but someone for the future.

Am i gutted that we didn't get 3 points, course I am, but the positives far outweighed the negatives, as for a centre back, we don't need one. I thought we looked comfortable, the goal came because Flanno was out of position. Flanno had a strong game and shows he is going to be strong, solid and brilliant in the future but lack of experience showed a little. Why was Flanno on when we had Kelly available. He should be first choice.

All in all, not the result we wanted but players already starting to gel which is a good sign. Our buys this window are spot on and I still think we will challenge. BUT THE SO CALLED FANS NEED TO GET BEHIND THE TEAM. Just out of curiosity, if the players, especially the younger ones, because this site has been running so long, come on here to see what is being said, do you think we are being constructive or destructive?

I still see a definite top four finish with a strong push for the title to come. We don't need negativity, it puts doubt in players minds and causes needless arguments with supporters.

Support your team, through thick and thin, really listen to the lyrics of YNWA, sums us up perfectly.

Looking forward to next game, we will not just get better but dominate, as we showed in the first half.

some of you should be ashamed of yourselves,flano had a bad day one bad day for christ's sake and some of you are saying put him in the reserves what it's along season and need time to gel more players coming gerrard to and we played very well in the first half good things to come i reckon, plus sunderland are no mugs i bet were not the only one of the top sides they take points off we will improve lay off eh give a bit of time.

13 Aug 2011 17:15:01
The only players who were impressive today were Adam and Enrique. Enrique defended pretty well, and showed that he was a quality defender. Adam sent in some decent crosses, corners, and got an assist. Carroll was awful, he had plenty of chances but wasted them all. Kuyt is WAAAYYY too slow to be playing winger.

13 Aug 2011 17:14:53
Not rumour but an observation

Kuyt should have been on from the start

Flanagan should have been on the bench and Kelly should have played

Bel = agree Unbel = disagree

13 Aug 2011 17:14:03
Carra - Bench
Flanno - Bench
Kelly - In
Dann/Cahill - In

13 Aug 2011 17:13:58
Calm down, first game of the season. I know, I'm disappointed...but, I wont start criticizing our players; what I'd do is to find the weaknesses.

*Flanagan needs to learn.
*Carra has lost his legs; new CB.
*Suarez was tired.
*Downing was great.(Bad lack hitting the post)
*Adam was great.
*Henderson is never a winger.
*Enrique was solid.
*Carroll worked his socks off. (His goal should've stood.)

I remember United drawing the first game of the season and later went on to win the league.

Bring on Arsenal I'm happy to get started.

Player ratings

Reina- 8. Solid game, dealt with crosses well, couldn't do anything about the goal.

Enrique- 6. He was ok defensively but he just kept hoofing and hoofing and hoofing. A little disappointed.

Agger- 7. Solid game as well, won plenty of headers in the box. Now let's give him a partner and we're good in CB.

Carragher- 3. Poor, really poor. Slow, and had to make poor challenges. Best days well behind him, time for him to make way.

Flanagan- 2 Even worse. I have said before that he is rash and jumps into tackles. Poor marking today. Doesn't have the maturity, defensive or offensive ability and height of Kelly. 3rd choice right back behind Kelly and Johnson. He was why we conceded that goal.

Downing- 7 He looked better on the left wing to be honest. Not a bad game, but he needs to be played on the left. He'll be much better in the future. Of course he didn't benefit from all the hoofing in the second half.

Adam- 7. Good free kick for the goal. In fact his set pieces were fantastic. Think he needs to develop a chemistry with his midfield partners. He didn't have that chemistry with Lucas but it should develop over time.

Lucas- 6 Average game, needs to link up with Adam better.

Henderson- 5 Average as well, needs time to settle as well. Didn't see much of him. Promising

Suarez- 7 to be fair he looked tired after his exertions at the Copa America. Poor penalty but he made up witn his goal. Should be given time to recover.

Carroll- 3 why on earth was he even on the pitch. He had several opportunities when the ball went straight for his head and he missed them all. Happened last season as well of course, still unconvinced.

I suppse the only bright point about this game is that we are in third and in the champions league but I doubt we will be there after tommorows games,,,,,,,,Zincho

Have you guys employed Big Sam or something? That was a shocking second half performance. Once again The Lamp Post shows just how good he really is. ;)

wont get any easier next week, we got arsenal away. liverpool better wake up and play kelly instead of flanagan, kuyt instead of henderson and take carroll off until he improves.RedTurk

13 Aug 2011 17:07:24
its just start of the seoson. we have 4/5 new player in starting 11. so may be its need a bit of time to be a team. if we score penallty then its our game. the missed chance can make us 2-0 that will surely a win for us. hope better fuure

13 Aug 2011 17:07:14
shame about result anyone else think flanagan was rubbish thought downing did well

13 Aug 2011 17:06:57
I said it six months ago, im saying it now, and i know i will continue saying for months if not years on end. Andrew Carroll is rubbishe. KK should never have bought him. And we will never progress to the next level with him on the field.

We spent how many millions to get supply to andy's head, which we did with great effect, i counted 9, not 1 was even near the target. This is his strength, he cant even do that with any efficiency. He cant pass, he has absolutely no positional play, cant dribble.

KK cut your losses now. he will never get better. I know im going to get slated for posting this, but come on people. TAKE YOUR BLINKERS OFF. Suarez and Carroll will never be a deadly partnership cuz carroll cannot read the game. It hurts watching him run around in a red shirt.

13 Aug 2011 17:06:21
No aquilani in the squad at all... best player in pre-season, he must be on his way

13 Aug 2011 17:06:04
Wots with all the long balls wots point in spending so much on midfielders and just by passing them I expected a lot more need another striker

13 Aug 2011 17:05:53
eds what did you think of enriques performance? i thought he did really well. {Ed001's Note - early days but he wasn't bad at all, will be better when he gets an understanding with the man in front of him.}

13 Aug 2011 17:05:37
nice to see 100 million wasted, 1-1 draw against a team who sign rejects and free agents. well done Kenny, nice transfers and starting 11 you put out where was aquaman and kuyt? get lucas and flanagan to the reserves for abit

13 Aug 2011 17:05:25
The story of Beauty and the Beast... magical first half and absolutely disguasting second-half performance of the team. Why oh why world - famous Liverpool fans get all of a sudden quiet when the team concedes a goal (shouldn't support increase instead, in this case?). Too many prawn sandwiches?
I know the King will get them playing pretty soon and well done for brilliant attacking football in the first half.

see cahill scored for bolton take it he is nt at anfield then

13 Aug 2011 17:02:59
Was carroll any good sounded crap mostly and out of the game apart from a few good runs and the disallowed goal. Bench was disappointing IMO too.

13 Aug 2011 17:02:55
Henderson should be in middle not out wide

if we needed a right winger should have spent 20 mill on a winger he is a center mid

with downing on left and Dirk on right till the all get use to playing together

dirk should have started no need to make that change with so many new players

13 Aug 2011 17:02:46
hey ed, please tell us when liverpool will get rid of those players that are destroying the club. we should be winning these games against sunderland, and yet again we draw. after all that hype, its stupid. lucas is not good enough to play, he always gives away free kicks every single game. flanagan was the reason why we conceded that goal, and he is not good enough to play for liverpool. those two are stupid and also guys such as kryiacos, ngog, poulsen etc. also i know that we aint going to win next week. so please ed tell us what is going to happen with these idiots please. thank you. {Ed001's Note - idiots? I am not going to waste my time on giving you a proper answer, you clearly know little about the game to suggest Lucas isn't good enough because he gives away free kicks. That is one of the most idiotic comments ever, next you will be saying Luis isn't good enough because he missed a pen.}

13 Aug 2011 17:02:11
And so the below average performances begin.

Suarez subbed and Mandy (one trick player) Carroll left on?? As soon as Suarez came offwho else thought "who can score us a goal now?"

We have a big problem at LB when Johnson is unavailable, and a HUGE problem up front.

It's depressing to know Dalglish has forced himself to start Carroll because of his price

Completely average squad. No creativity, urgency, patience.

Where is Aquilani?

Chipkin9 (EIRE)

13 Aug 2011 17:01:59
not a bad result least its not a loss.no injury concerns to worry about.the players looks so tired.giving ball away alot.enrique played well good crossing.bit disappointed just hoofed it to carroll.1st touch needs improving and carragher needs replacing at back.your thoughts ed on the game and what you thought of enrique?DORSET RED {Ed001's Note - I just thought we lacked match fitness, our pre-season jaunt to Asia hasn't helped, that was a huge error, teams that travel such huge distances tend to have bad starts to the season. The level of the opposition while we were away just wasn't good enough either, nor the teams we played when we got back. That will be looked at by the coaching staff I am sure. Enrique wasn't bad at all, I would rather wait until he has had a run of games before judging him though.}

13 Aug 2011 17:01:45
am absolutely furious, how can the players look tired, there supposed to be athletes. maybe if they played in pre season instead of the junk that was played. everytime opposition have a set piece it seems like they are going to score. i hope kelly was not fully fit otherwise its suicidal to play flanagan. can we please get rid of aurelio if he is injured.
opinions welcome

13 Aug 2011 17:01:36
Before people start slating Kenny or certain players please remember that it's only the first game of the season. New players still have to gel and there will probably be one or two additions to the squad before the end of the month. The first half shows what the team is capable of; yes, the second half was disappointing but at least we didn't lose.

One down, 37 to go: if we have only have 5 points after 5 games, then I'll be disappointed and worried but I refuse to panic after one.

Mr Benn

Centre back pls

13 Aug 2011 17:01:10

different season same rubbish ....2nd half shocking

13 Aug 2011 17:00:30
why the hell did downing play in the centre of midfield for most of the 2nd half..im sure we got him to beat defenders and cross the ball in :s am i right ed? {Ed001's Note - why are you asking me? Clearly it is an opinion not a right or wrong question so don't drag me into trying to back you up.}

13 Aug 2011 17:00:19
another long season watching others play attacking football while we struggle against mid table teams

13 Aug 2011 16:59:46
You can have Gibson on loan if you want? You could do with a decent midfielder. Should have bought Obertan rather than yawning, I mean Downing.

Sydney ;)

13 Aug 2011 16:59:23
Hope that goal has pulled every one down to reality, we dont have any silky, skillful players who can beat their man and CREATE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING Our new signings havent looked bad but their not showing this 'class' many people on here claim they posses. We better hope Arsenal fall without fabregas other wise it's fifth.

Sharky

SHARKY,completely agree mate, i brought this topic up a couple of weeks ago, many of the top teams around us have skillfull pacey midfielders, arshavin, nani,silva etc and we don;t have anyone in midfield like that aprt from suarez who needs that sort of supply. Ed, would you agree? {Ed001's Note - nope, we just need to give our players time to bed in, instead of being fickle and on their back after one result.}

13 Aug 2011 16:59:15
Was always going to be 1-1

Missed pen
Disallowed goal
hit the bar = Sunderland will score

13 Aug 2011 16:58:53
Great first half today, we played very well. Should have put the game to bed. What happened in the second half tho? we looked like a different team. We need to play like we did the first half for the full 90. Think we do have a great team tho and they showed it first half and I think with a few more games for the team to gel we will be playing at the high standard expected from the GREAT L.F.C

cheers deSouza

13 Aug 2011 16:57:37
That's what happens when u spend over 50 mil on average players.First game 2 point dropped.Man u,Chelski wont drop points against this team.Same old,Same old.

13 Aug 2011 16:57:20
In matches like this you can see how much we're missing the king of midfield Steven Gerrard, need him back a.s.a.p

13 Aug 2011 16:56:58
well shocking display i was really excited before the game thought we might have been capable of doing something on that performance our buys looked average at best and if we dont improve we will be lucky if we are fighting for a uefa place let alone a champions league place or the league we still need a right winger as well
stuart

13 Aug 2011 16:56:25

13 Aug 2011 16:55:55
i think maybe we should of played better opposition in pre season and played more competitive in those games
comparing Man Utd's pre games to ours they played against much better opposition and treated them like a real match.

13 Aug 2011 16:55:54
Lucas was awful today, he gave the ball away cheaply all game long. Flanno looked out of place, not sure why Kelly wasn't given the start. And, as usual, we are lacking creativity anywhere outside of when Suarez has the ball.
Mark

13 Aug 2011 16:55:38
I think adam was very lucky to stay on the pitch, some of his tackles were awfully timed...all in all a decent ish first half and a very poor second half

13 Aug 2011 16:55:06
Oh well...same sh@t different season. Roll on next year lol

13 Aug 2011 16:54:28
Two points dropped already very dissapointing
We should of won that easily.....

13 Aug 2011 16:54:20
Flanegan isnt good enough. We need a decent RB, another winger and another striker. We seemed to lose the midfield today and second half tiredness kicked in.

13 Aug 2011 16:54:18
God damn it Liverpool-1 sunderland-1. Zincho

13 Aug 2011 16:53:54
**sigh** Rubbish second half. early days but we need to do much better

13 Aug 2011 16:53:51
flanagan instead of kelly cost us the game today , has there been an injury to kelly or something ed? cheers

DEANO {Ed001's Note - he was on the bench, Flanagan hardly cost us the game anyway, we should have scored more and then it wouldn't have mattered.}

13 Aug 2011 16:53:48
flanagan was shockingly bad today gave away the ball so much and his defending itself was horrific

13 Aug 2011 16:53:40
Dissapointing result, I feel we were lacking firepower in the second half. Flanagan also had a rough day, defended extremely bad... What do you think the problem was eds? The players seemed tired after the first half... {Ed001's Note - just lack match fitness, it takes time to get that and it doesn't help that a lot of our players were playing during the summer so haven't had a proper break.}

13 Aug 2011 16:53:03
OUR CM IS NOT GOOD ENOUGHlucas, im not even going to waste my time on the subject and adam isnt mobile enough, yes we lack match fitness but we desperately need gerrard back in cm or keep aqualini.

13 Aug 2011 16:52:59
Very impressive

Sydney ;)

13 Aug 2011 16:52:24
Quite dissapointed in that had it down for a 3-0 win

13 Aug 2011 16:49:37
I think we don't need one more winger brigade needs to wake up.
Flano needs to learn how to tackel he jumps in and cost us 3 points with his poor defending..

Red indian

13 Aug 2011 16:48:59
bit disappointed....but i guess we lacked that leader to kind of give everyone a lift and a burst of energy..

13 Aug 2011 16:48:45
We need another striker that can play the ball on the ground, not just hoofing it up to Carroll and pray we get lucky. Different team, but at the moment....same old LFC

13 Aug 2011 16:44:24
Flanno seriously not good enough, we need kelly or glen jon back, think henderson needs to improve aswell

13 Aug 2011 16:43:52
dalglish not doing well, why did he take of luis carroll is not impressing {Ed001's Note - Luis was tired, his workrate dipped, he needed to come off.}

13 Aug 2011 16:42:17
We've gone to bits this 2nd half, look tired

13 Aug 2011 16:38:30
Can someone explain to me how the ref is giving Sunderland the benefit every time one of their players falls over, most notably Wes Brown?

13 Aug 2011 16:34:19
Ohh no suarez is off and meireles is on not looking to good. Zincho

13 Aug 2011 16:33:51
Ed, i thought we were going to start plating pass and move football but it seems we are hoofing the ball and its pointless most of the time. Ed,is this what kk has in mind for the future? {Ed001's Note - don't waste my time with this rubbish.}

13 Aug 2011 16:33:50
For me, the electric Suarez from the first half has tired quickly sinse the break, and that has been the difference. Its obvious to see, his drive pushed us on in the first half. DOwning has gone a bit quiet also. What ya think ed? {Ed001's Note - I agree, he looked shattered and needed to come off and we have missed him.}

13 Aug 2011 16:33:13
Think its a good idea luis gt subbed looks a bit tired in the 2nd half

13 Aug 2011 16:32:19
did miereles get a hair transplant too?

13 Aug 2011 16:32:08

Keith YNWA

13 Aug 2011 16:26:49
Eds is it me or do liverpool look lifeless in the 2nd half {Ed001's Note - lacklustre is the word that comes to mind, it happens in early season games, players are still searching for match fitness.}

13 Aug 2011 16:24:39
we look tired.
aintree dave

13 Aug 2011 16:23:20
Ed, does it get on your nerves like it does mine that we choose to hoof the ball to carroll or suarez when UNESESSARY and end up causing our own problems? Carrager needs replacing by cahill and we need REAL steel and technigue in CM and lucas isnt that though everimproving. Ed, would you agree? {Ed001's Note - not with Cahill, he has the same tendency as Carra, he is so used to playing with a big lump and hoofing it to him that it has become ingrained in his play.}

13 Aug 2011 16:17:43
we badly need some1 like cahill who has pace and cn command the back four

13 Aug 2011 16:14:49
God damn it I hate u Sunderland now ,,,,Zincho

poulsen wants out from liverpool but is this correct because didnt he say he wants to form a partnership with charlie adam only a week ago? Or was he on about Fifa 11?

13 Aug 2011 16:01:13
At last we've got a pundit that talks some sense. Mark Bright on Final Score reckons with the players signed and the team spirit were gonna end up winning the Prem, who am i to disagree with him. Jonson6

13 Aug 2011 15:55:44
cahill scored a cracker for Botlon.

Chi-Paul

13 Aug 2011 15:54:40
The hindsite thing wasn't aimed at you Ed001, i've never disbelived anything you've said so ye fair enough you were rooting for Adam. Like i said though that miss has more then likely put Adam on em and were winning so its all good Ed001. Jonson6. {Ed001's Note - I hope so, he really is a top penalty taker, though now I have said that he will probably make a mess of his next few!}

13 Aug 2011 15:53:51
Quite impressed with Enrique Adam and Downing. Suarez and Carroll are working well too. Aren't we top of the league atm? =)

Wow wat a performance so far they just doont know how to deal withh saaurez we should be 4 up carroll has been anonymous so far but he dont after do much the team is doing so well hopefully we can get a goal in the second half to put this to bed not that we shouldnt have all ready
giblet

13 Aug 2011 15:44:48
I politely disagree over Gerrard as a pen taker. He improved dramatically at em over recent seasons and never missed one in any shoot out we've been involved in. Just saying fair enough is Adam is on em Ed, just saying with hindsight its alright saying Suarez shouldn't have taken it. Anyway as i've just said to my mate he's got his goal and Adam on pens probably now so its all good. Just the hindsight thing Ed thats all pal. Jonson6 {Ed001's Note - I was sat here screaming at Adam to take it before it was taken, so not using hindsight, but I do understand what you are saying. There is a difference between a shootout pen and a pen in normal time though. Gerrard has a great mentality for a shootout but I just don't think he is a good regular penalty taker.}

13 Aug 2011 15:43:00
Squad looks good so far, and if we get Dann or Cahill I would be satisfied (until January ;-) ), and thats without Gerrard or Kelly/Johnson. Just my opinion,

- (The Ever) Jolly Red

13 Aug 2011 15:42:54
Ed, we spent 50plus million on midfield yet sunderlund are dominating possesion. Is this whats to come for the rest of the season? {Ed001's Note - or you could be watching a different match from the rest of us? Or perhaps you are a WUM?}

13 Aug 2011 15:40:47
Early signs are really good, kk looks to have got it spot with all new signing's, come on you reds

Ed, are my the only one who thinks carrager ruins our good play the majority of the time. what do you think mate? {Ed001's Note - he marshals the defence well, but there is something lacking when he is on the ball, so long as he has Agger or Kelly alongside him to play the ball out of defence I don't see it is too much of a problem. Though it is not ideal.}

13 Aug 2011 15:37:35
Why is Aqua not included?? Here we go again, he's just said he's prepared to stay and how do we repay him after his terrific pre season, not even a place on the bench? He's far better than spearing, just give him a chance he will show his class

RDR {Ed001's Note - he WANTS to leave, what part of that are you not getting?}

13 Aug 2011 15:30:14
Coulda woulda shoulda,Suarez has taken enough pens in his life to fancy or if he's the nominated taker. He scored a big pen in the semi final of the Copa, alright after the fact ramp saying Adam or someone else should have it. Come on anyone can miss a pen, even Gerrard blazed one last season. Jonson6 {Ed001's Note - I would never have anyone other than Adam take a pen if he is on the pitch personally, he is the best penalty taker at the club. Gerrard is not a good pen taker, I would not let him take them, he misses too many.}

13 Aug 2011 15:24:38
Oh dear... Agger injured

13 Aug 2011 15:23:39
Why are we going after Cahill? He's good But Agger is pure class and We have Plenty of Cover for his partner with Carra, Skrtel, Kelly and The Greek.

13 Aug 2011 15:21:17
Why isn't martin Skertel even on the bench?

13 Aug 2011 15:19:56
Hey ed, do you know why is Flanagan playing at right back instead of Johnson or Kelly? I think Kelly should be our first choice RB. Thanks.

Keith YNWA {Ed001's Note - I don't, I can only assume Kelly is not fully fit or Kenny likes Flanno's pure competitiveness, he is a proper battler.}

13 Aug 2011 15:18:38
Suarez has 3 points on fantasy football 1 for apperance,,,4 points for the goal,,,-2 for missing the penalty,,,but he has 6 points for me because he is my captain. Zincho.

13 Aug 2011 15:10:04
There is one rule of penalties. Never let the man who draws it take it. They will always put it over. That should have been Adam's.

Aquilani not in the squad my fellow Reds.
He will be gone before the window closes.

Very excited about the team that Dalglish has picked. Carroll and Suarez upfront, oh get ready for a whipping Sunderland.

13 Aug 2011 14:44:54
Aquaman not even in the squad, could this be the clearest indication that hes on his way, shame i thought if he stayed on for a while and performed well he would either stay on or at least raise his valuation.

People getting abit over excited for the season I think. Dont get me wrong its great to have optimism but saying we should be targeting 1st or 2nd is madness. We have signed pretty average players from lower premier league sides in which they stood out. I feel when you watch gerrard and Suarez this season along side some of the new boys, you will clearly see the gulf in class. Lets be optimistic but realistic we should be happy with forth, then when we are back in the champs league we can bring in the players that europes elite will be targeting, they will give us a real chance of winnng the prem. It is a steady rebuild now, although I believe it could of been different if we had signed players from abroad (Diego, Sissoko, Godin, Jansen and Mata for me would have won the league)

My prediction:
Man UTD
Man City
Chelsea
Liverpool
Arsenal
Spurs

E.H LFC {Ed001's Note - we have bought the best players from those teams, there is no gulf in class and it is not just disrespectful but downright insane to claim those players are 'pretty average'.}

13 Aug 2011 12:41:35
hi ed's
will suarez start today ? and if not do you think we will see him at some stage ?

also, what is the supposed value of diego godin ? after hearing 17m for cahill, i believe he would be greater quality, and would be 1st choice straight away.. although personally i think an engish centre back with heart and premierleague experience is essential for the team.
thanks, any thoughts appreciated.

Suare7 {Ed001's Note - I expect Suarez to feature, most likely to be from the bench though. Godin's price is raised by Atletico's lack of desire to sell now they have offloaded Aguero, they don't need or want to lose Godin. I would think they would want 20m for him now.}

lfc.tv have still not released the news on the squad to face Sunderland.

I even went onto the EPL website and Sunderland's squad is already showing but not the LFC squad.

Surely Dalglish has made his decision on the players by now? It is a bit frustrating waiting like this. FFS just put the fans out of their misery, surely we should know by now which 18 players have been selected?

I don't want to read too much in to it but does it have to mean anything that Aquilani has been given number 15 on the official website of Liverpool? Players such as Degen or Insua (who you expect to leave) haven't been given a number. I mean I for one hope Aquilani has at least one year left to see if it works out at LFC. If it doesn't work out then so be it.

Just a thought, I wonder if we specifically targeted Cahill first which focused Arsenal on Dann. Once Cahill has signed, Dann would then stop courting Arsenal and make the switch to us. Been a Liverpool fan it would be wise to leave him till last so that other managers still thought he was available and enabling us to get both our targets. As I said just a thought.

Or it could just be that Cahill is preferred due to having a better injury record over Dann.

Would be a great coup if my first notion happened.

Ed how do you think they will line up today. I figure these players are fit and ready to go:

Reina
Kelly Carragher Agger Enrique
Henderson Adam
Kuyt (Aquilani/ Meireles) Downing
Carroll
Bench:Doni, Kyrgiakos, Flanagan
luis suarez, Lucas(too soon to play them)

with injuries and lack of fitness, the team seems to pick itself. I figur Aquilani or Meireles is the only choice

13 Aug 2011 10:50:17
Lets hope the Nasri to City happens quick, there will be no better time than next week to play the arse, no fabregas,nasri,wilshire and vermalen all out, the teams morale should be rock bottom, great time to give them a real hiding while they cower and lick there wounds, even if they do bring in replacements, ie mata is not a good match to make your dubut.
Jaydee

13 Aug 2011 10:45:09
If our summer spending is over I feel we are seriously going to struggle to get ANY higher than 4th, 5 average signings when we are still capable of getting some quality players. I personally think we should have bought atleast one more player like Suarez or Aqualani just to give us a bit more style and quality. The rumours of Higuain were obviously too good to be true because of our new pointless policy of sign only players with prem experience or Birtish players. Maybe next year if we can scrape 4th place we'll step up and look else where for quality players.
But I am glad Aqua seems to not mind playing for us, I feel he will be almost like a new signing, I know people have their doubts on whether he'll adapt but he hasnt been given a fair chance in his lfc career.

Hi everyone

It is the first time I am taking part of fantasy football and entered my team with the name of Red Rebellion and joined
the Liverpool rumours and another private league.

When I logged on this morning to make a late player change I noticed that I have been removed from both leagues. Is it because the word Rebellion would have been deemed unsuitable? I have changed my team name but does anyone know whether they will reconsider the new team name and allow me to take part?

Just a quick question eds, do we think Enrique will play today, or too soon do we think?
I think he should play, i mean, although he hasnt been here long, he just needs to keep tight at the back today, and the rest of the team should be able to take the game to Sunderlarnd with that firm foundation?

Anfield Andy {Ed001's Note - I expect him to play now Aurelio is out, but you can't second guess Kenny.}

13 Aug 2011 03:55:57
Ed33 maybe because they have only signed Tuncay on loan and they want something more permanent.Are teams only allowed to sign 1 player for each position.Bolton are light up front with Elmander going,Sturridge back at Chelsea and Davies isn't getting any younger.JC

has adam morgan made it to lfc 1st team? i mean the 25 member squad.

13 Aug 2011 08:11:59
Any truth to the rumours that Shawcross is Kenny's preferred CB?

With Cahill next and then Dann?

{Ed006's Note - If it is Shawcross, and for the £17m muted I will go mental. Why sign a mediocre centre half when we could play Sama and Wilson if we get injuries.}

I wonder if bolton are stupid enough to be conned into buying ngog. A player LFC would pay to get rid. Even take Credit note against G Cahill deal.

They could take Pacheco, Kyrgiakos too and make the G-Cahill thing happen. IF it was me, i would give them all three for Discount on Cahill.

with all the talk of finishing in the top 4, and that only utd,.cheski,city ,can win the title i think kk will be doing his upmost to bring the title home again,he will not be coned by the so called footie experts that say finishing 4th is the best we can do,theres one thing for sure we will give it one hell of a try this season, and who knows with a little luck on our side we might even be crowned champions again........lfc

if dann goes to arsenal and bolton want ngog would that make cahil to liverpool more likely eds your thoughts please {Ed033's Note - That deal could be considered but it is all speculation at the minute. Bolton have just signed Tuncay so would they want another forward?}

they might if they were to use tuncay as a midfielder

i think that we have by far done the best buisness in the transfer market this summer, ok so city bought aguero , chelski bought lukaku etc etc , all outstanding players in thier own right but suited to the pl , only time will tell as we have seen how much of a flop chamak and dzeko have been, but with liverpool we have bought so far 4 of the stand out performers from the prem last season who will all hit the ground running come tomorow, they know what to expect and have the skills to more than deal with the rigours of the pl so im sure i am not the only one who is very very optimistic about this coming season and im sure that im not the only one who thinks we can win the pl outright never mind a fourth place finish. a squad playing 451 or as some call it 4231, look at the 5 in mf. thats a very strong team

reina
johnson, skrtel, agger, enrique
lucas CM, meireles CM
gerrard RCM, aquilani AM, downing LW
suarez ST

doni (gk) - kelly, flanagan(rb) - carra, soto(cb), aurelio(lb-lw) maxi - adam, poulson(cm) - henderson, cole(rw) - carroll, kuyt, ngog(st)

why should we only settle for 4ft? we should go out to win the league only if that is imposible then go for the next best spot.

.we have the best gk in the prem.
.two of the most attacking rb's in johnson and kelly
.one of the best cb in agger
.one of the most balanced left backs enrique
.the best ball winner and safest passer lucas
.two of the most creative cm's in the prem meireles and aquilani
.two of the best set piece takers adam and gerrard
.one of the best poachers kuyt
.one of the most electrifying players suarez
.one of the most imposing cf carroll.

By 31st August this could've happened..

Alberto Aquilani > AC Milan £8m
Philipp Degen > Released (£1.5m payoff)
Christian Poulsen > Fulham £1.5m
Emiliano Insua > Genoa £3m
Nabil El Zhar > Released (£1m payoff)
David N'Gog > Bolton P/E
Gary Cahill >Liverpool £14m + P/E

I believe however that Aquilani will end up staying until January where he will leave. Cahill is 50/50 as to whether he will come. It will be a late one.

Hi Ed, can you shed any light on the severity of Steven Gerrard's injury and what is likely to be the affect in terms of his future playing career.

Thanks,

LG {Ed001's Note - hard to say, it is a case of healing an injury made worse by not getting treatment earlier. It is a make or break period, but he should be back playing in time, it is more about how long it takes. Though any operation does carry a risk.}

For the posters who disagree about Taarabt...

Copy and past the following link on google and you will have the pleasure of watching Taarabt in action. I thought Turan had quick feet, this guy is like lightning. Enjoy the goals, especially the first one.

Red4ever {Ed001's Note - he may have ability but it is useless when he can't harness it to be part of a team.}
