Before his last game at anfield, i would like to take a bit of time to thank the man.

On the 30th of may 1980, a child was born, a child who made two people extremely happy, but even his parents couldn't imagine this tiny boy would go on to make millions of people extremely happy.

November 29th 1998, i was 7 years old, sat around my uncles house, as he were the only lfc fan in my family. There i sat with two custard creams and a lollipop that was also a whistle, remember those? My uncle from this day would always remind me, " do you remember where you were when he made his debut"

December 1999, it had begun. He drops his left shoulder once, he drops his left shoulder twice, he strikes the ball low and hard across goal, it was a technique little to our knowledge we would be seeing time and time again. It was also my first memory of him, i spent every saturday after that goal, trying to drop a shoulder on every occasion, he was affecting my life already.

Remember that alaves game, the bursting run from deep, a ball from owen, and there it was again, the technique that put liverpool 2-0 up. Do you remember how jubilant you were when we won that game from gary macs deflected free kick? The legend now making impacts in big games.
That year we won the league cup, fa cup and uefa cup, as well as the charity shield and super cup. The greatest haul of trophies at anfield in my life time, and he played a part in all of it, remember how you felt after all of those?

Your owens, fowlers, redknapps mcateers, hyypias etc came and went, but still, he is here impacting games just like the last 2 weeks.

Before i take you to istanbul, let's remember how we got there, with a qualifier against grazer ak, in which we won on aggregate, 2-1, guess who got both our goals?
After 2 wins 2 loses and a draw in the qroups, the pressure was on against olympiacos
"lovely cushioned header, for. "
I don't recall the rest of it at the time, as my house had just erupted and shingles were falling from the rooftop, remember how you felt in that moment?

Big games, some of our best games happened in that campaign, 6-2 against leverkusen, 2-1 against juve, 1-0 against chelsea. It was a maverick, massive, mesmerizing cup run. One ill never ever forget, all thanks to him and his team mates. Do you remember how you felt after those tight games?

May 25th 2005. Not a hope in hells chance, we've fluked it to be here they said. Cafu running at traore they sniggered. Baros up against stam and maldini they gloated. While you could some what agree, there was something they didn't have, they didn't have him. 3-0 at half time, its over. I stood there in the pub at the age of 15, head in my hands, balling like i did when i lost my labrador aged 9, i couldn't comprehend what had happened. But now i'm older and a tiny bit wiser, i see now that the fans singing ynwa at half time was a message to him, a prayer, a type of hymn. He absorbed it and came out fighting. Riise cross is block, he tries again, he's there, with the most majestic leap I've ever witnessed, as if he were being lifted by shanks and paisley to get the exact height to keep the ball down and in the corner. "hello hello, here we go"
How did you feel in this moment? the rest, well i don't need to tell you what happened, but ill ask, how did you feel when he lifted the trophy?

May 13th 2006
2 nil down, a he throws a 40 yard pass to cisse, 2-1, how did you feel? "two players far post, here comes. " 2 a piece. "risse cross, oh its fallen. "
millions of lfc fans jumped at the exact same moment, in awe of one of the best goals ever seen, hislop, no chance. Do you remember how you felt?

Since then we've witnessed some of his greatest goals and matches, my personal fav would be his goal against madrid, the cushioned volley from the babel cross? the tekkers on that!

STEVEN GERRARD, you gave your life to liverpool, and in turn to me and a million others. Youve made me laugh, scream, cry, shout, swear, hug and kiss people near by that i didn't even know. You are Mr liverpool, a true gent, a REAL legend of english football. I hope you do get your prem medal in the form as a manager, i'm sorry players and managers have let you down, it shows even more credit to you for sticking by us. I will cry come your last game, i won't know what to do, it could be a mental break down aha. To finish my post, and if youve made it this far, i thank you. Notice how many times i asked "how did that make you feel?" that's because next time you slag off an ageing gerrard past his prime and being played out of position, just remember, how he did make you feel.
thanks for reading. feel free to share your best stevie memories

{Ed007's Note - Mate I'm not a Liverpool fan and definitely not a Stevie G fan but hats off to you on that post. Good job I was taking a dump while reading it though, it was handy for me turning round to spew down the pan when required!}

13 May 2015 01:45:23
Great post and I love the man. There is a part of me that thinks he became too big within the club however. His best season was at right midfield, where his pace, right leg and license to get forward suited his game best as resulted in over 20 goals in a season and many more created. During his golden years I think we would of achieved far more if he hadn't refused to play there. Imagine alonso and masch in the centre with Gerrard on the right. Torres would of got another 10 each season and we'd have definitely won the league! A great great player but not a central midfielder and not a great club man for me. they play wherever they're asked to! I know I'm going to get slated for this post but it's my opinion and don't think I'm not a fan of the great man. He's within the top 20 players I've ever seen and I'm not a young man

im made up stevie g has started scoring again, is legs might have gone but he still has it in the head ( not a pun ) its just his experience that put him in the positions to score, we have missed his important goals all season, i have said it before i think he has been getting played in the wrong position, look at lampard he still plays is his position and he scored a few goals, in the def-mid position he was not very good, he needed his legs and that's what has gone on him all he needed was to play as an attacking mid and he would have played more and with his experience scored more as it has shown in the last couple of games,

would anyone sell sturridge if they knew he was going to have the same season as he did this season, i would because he won't score goals from the treatment table, with the money from his sale and wages we could get a really good striker, i'm not saying sell hom but just throwing an idea out there to see what peoples thoughts are and if we could have some one in his place who is just as good if not better

we should put sterling up for sale and stop him showing our club the finger and making us look weak, just sell him, the great mangers of the past would not have put up with all this from him or any player, other managers like fergie and the special one would never put up with it,

Believable5 Unbelievable9

13 May 2015 01:52:24
You wouldn't get jack shit for Sturridge after the season that he's had, so no don't sell him but to rely on him as a first choice striker would be stupidity. We have to buy a first choice striker and treat Sturridge as a bonus next season. Sterling should absolutely be gone. I know it's a different age but shanks and Paisley would march him out of the door and that's good enough for me

Agree5 Disagree8

13 May 2015 14:35:56
A first choice striker is a MUST. Studge can`t be trusted to stay fit so In that case, you act as if he will NOT be available and go from there.

12 May 2015 22:41:55
Here is my view about the Sterling saga. Some people here quite childlishly adopted the view that if he doesn't want to stay, then we don't want him as well and also we think that he is rubbish player and we have I've and Markovich so we don't need him so let's cash in on him.

I think this is childish and we should distinguish between how annoyed we are with him wanting to leave and a realistic appreciation of him. So, first of all, despite him need to improve many aspects of his game and him being far from the final product he is easily the best player we have. Comparing him to I've or Markovich is a bad joke. In his worst day he is way way better from both.

Also, as I said before, I think he will actually benefit from playing in a team in which there are more senior 'go to' players, say aguero, Silva and Toure so dribblnig to death is not a first and only option for every ball he gets and there is always target in the box for him to give the ball to.

Saying all this, I think we shouldn't let him go for any price. He is priceless for us and will give big advantage for our rivals.

If we absolutley have to sell him to fund a deal with a top striker I would defeinitley want to make sure the top striker sign first and make sure all is settled with him before releasing Sterling so we do not repeat the Alexis Sanchez saga. Even then I would insist on him going abroad.

In the past when players were not so powerful and the clubs had more say in where do they go, I would maybe offer other clubs a deal whereby we sell him to a club only if we get a top player back (plus cash) - say him to City for Dzeko or him to Real for Chichirito. But apperantly it is the players who decide where they go now so no chance for that because no big name want to come to us.

Selling him for cash will be really really bad because as saw last summer with money you cann't bring quality players if they don't want to come.

Hernandez is on loan from Man U

Agree1 Disagree2

13 May 2015 02:01:02
He is easily the best player we have. are you kidding me! Coutinho, Henderson. head and shoulders above sterling this season. Also would you see any successful manager. shankley, Paisley, Ferguson, morinho putting up with shit like this from one of their players? Absolutely no chance! Sterling should be the first out of the club followed by rodgers. Nobody should show disrespect to the club that pays their wages and for that reason, as great a player as suarez is. he had to go to

Agree6 Disagree4

13 May 2015 02:25:17
Why is it childish? Why would you want a player that is not happy and proud to play for the club? Sorry but in my opinion. highest bidder please? Yes I know that naive ed002

Agree1 Disagree3

13 May 2015 04:14:47
its not childish, he's had an okay season but has been given far more of a chance than the likes of ibe and markovich. many times he should have been taken off but has stayed for the full 90 whilst under achieving. I'd be happy for him to stay but if he wants to go we are fortunate enough to have people queuing up to take his place and he could raise some much needed funds to strengthen elsewhere. he's not the real deal yet.Loads of potential but he could also end up leaving and end up like Sinclair or SWP. if we can get 30 mil for a 'potential' player I would take it. better than us over paying on another potential player for a change.

Agree1 Disagree2

12 May 2015 22:52:02
i wanted us to sign milner but i can't believe some fans who say he is not good enough for us he is in the city side so why is he not good for us, a lot of fans go on about his wages and CL but i think milner does not need the money at thos stage, i think he is relistic to know he won't get the same wages as he is getting at a money bags club i think a lot of fans on here might be suprised what his wages are at arsena; they won't be a 120k a week like some have wrote, i love it when fans talk about a players wage being too much before we even sign them, if you want top players you have to pay top wages, you don't win anything with low wage players

Could you go into that ED . I have looked and searched but have found nothing.

Thanks

Believable12 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - they have gone public with information that should have been kept private in an attempt to force him to sign. Now he is getting abuse at every ground he plays at for being greedy, even though it is not the money that is the main issue. Rodgers has made a number of comments making out that Sterling is just being greedy and that the offer is fantastic etc. It is not how Liverpool operate, we deal with things inhouse and if a deal can't be done then we move them on with no fuss. Rodgers has turned us into a circus, and he is the chief clown.}

I think you all know where I stand on BR but all this talking through the media, maybe its a American tryst?

Agree0 Disagree1

13 May 2015 00:01:57
This is the way BR has mismanaged players and their careers at LFC and Sterling might just leave not because of the issues which are not money related, but because of the way BR has stuck his mouth in a situation where he should just have deflected the question. This is clearly something he has no prob doing when trying to absorb himself of any blame for our issues but has no prob mismanaging players and their careers like Sahko, Lucas, Suso, Kelly, Borini and so on. Now, Sterling might leave due to his incompetence in the media and his inability to just shut up.

Agree3 Disagree2

12 May 2015 22:42:28
ed001 your right in what our club used to do , but i think BR done the story because he felt that the kid was messing the club around , i think for what he has achieved and done for the club that the offer was too much , also if sturridge was not injured then the contract would not be an issue because he would not have been moved up front and now he thinks he is better than he is , the way i see him is he is not going to improve much , he needs to improve his decision making and his scoring but after all next season he will be made to go back on the wing or out wide , the way i see it this could be one of the reasons he won't sign , we will be getting new strikers in and if he goes back on the wing then he is out of the lime light , people can say he has not played well because of the contract situation but the way i see it i think he is just playing bad and he will have more games like he has then he will have good ones

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am sorry but if he is messing the club about then you just get rid, you don't go public about contract issues as it reduces his value if you do have to sell. Rodgers and the club have made themselves look like a bunch of amateurs. When you are as ridiculously overpaid for being inept, as Rodgers is, then you are in no position to moan about anyone else's contract.}

Ed1 can I ask what would your ideal summer transfers be? I know your a big fan of son but any others ?

Believable3 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - a top class keeper, and a midfielder with real bite, Medel type, as we still need one. If we had Son too, then I still believe the academy should be looked to for cover in case of injuries.}

12 May 2015 22:18:10
Is son a out and out striker ??? Always taught he was behind the striker center forward I think we need a proper striker

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he can play all over the front and attacking midfield positions.}

13 May 2015 00:07:28
Son is deadly with either foot as well and I agree with Ed as to what we need and thank Jesus, Milner isn't coming because he is not that midfielder with bite that we need. We know what we need and with a new manager who actually knows what he is doing, we will b ok.

Agree1 Disagree4

13 May 2015 02:11:53
Disagree on Milner, you can never have enough 100 percent men on the field. 11 men were hardly ever played in their correct position under shanks, Paisley or fagan but you could garaunteed 100 percent from all 11

Agree0 Disagree0

13 May 2015 02:39:20
Redohio I think you will find that throughout his footballing life he has the bite you talk of maybe your to young to remember him he is a very good midfielder who is very hard to knock of the ball ,I bet you didn't want fabregas because of his wages and thought he had lost his ability what do you think now of fabregas

Agree1 Disagree1

13 May 2015 01:48:35
Hey Ed. Could you please expand on the "midfielder with bite". You mentioned Medel but i haven't really seen him play. What would be the qualities of this type of player you are talking about. ? Cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I mean like the way Coquelin and Matic are operating at Arsenal and Chelsea. They protect the back four and give the attacking players the freedom to work.}

13 May 2015 02:20:51
Always respect your opinion ed001 but you're obviously a big fan of Gary medel. I watched him in many games for cardiff as I used to live there and took them on as a second team. For me he's a decent player in that he reads the game well similar to Lucas but always looks a bit overweight and slow to respond when his usual awareness let's him down? Could rossiter and Lloyd Jones not be decent cover for Lucas next season?

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - are you joking? He was the only thing keeping Cardiff within reach of avoiding relegation. He is stocky and powerful, not overweight. He never stops running. He would have also enabled us to not waste Can at centre back if we got desperate as he is a very good centre half too.}

13 May 2015 10:36:55
Ed1
I often wonder medel sanchez or vidal who'd you pick?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they all play different roles, so it is not a case of picking between them.}

13 May 2015 14:45:16
Brock, you don`t know how old I am so you are in no position to school me on anything. Milner made his debut for Leeds in 2001/2002 season at 16 and I was 25 years old at the time so I am not as young as you claim. Anyway, your opinion is welcome BUT he is not a Medel or Matic nor Mascherano so the bite you speak of, is not there. If we want a DM, we go for players of that calibre, not Milner especially at those wages. He is a utility player who can play wide and in central midfield but is NOT a central midfielder with bite as he was slapped around vs Barca in the CL this year. I`m glad he is not coming because we have bigger needs than him and we have enuff cover there.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 May 2015 20:32:29
Hi Eds, just wondered what your opinion on Teixeira is. He's injured at the moment but by all accounts he had a good loan spell at Brighton. Is he considered as someone who can make the grade or do you think he will leave? In my opinion players like him and Illori should be given a chance. The money wasted this season is a clear case for letting some more young talent progress. Even if it takes a few more seasons to break the top four consecutively. Unless it's a Stella signing finished article I really wouldn't spend the money. I Just wanted to know what you think/know from your sources.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he was considered good enough, which is why Rodgers gave him a cameo appearance. For some reason he was then discarded, despite the cameo being excellent. The coaches all rate him, as do the coaching staff at Brighton.}

13 May 2015 00:08:55
As long as we don't have a manager who believes in players like Tex, Ojo, Kent and the others, we will not see them grace Anfield ever.

Agree1 Disagree1

12 May 2015 20:21:31
Ed001- quick question as a Liverpool fan, there's been interest in Pjanic and Kovacic reported if you could choose one of the two for us who would you go for. I've not seen much of Kovacic but what I've seen of Pjanic he is someone I think could add a lot next to Lucas and Henderson in a three by dictating the game, although I haven't seen much of this season unfortunately.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no idea. I don't really watch a lot of Serie A.}

12 May 2015 18:39:41
Ed001 - would you feel that LFC should allow Sterling to leave this summer if Aubameyang (or Heung) was his replacement? I understand that LFC might be forced to selling him but the question is whether you feel the club would be ahead as a result of such transaction? Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - if it was either of those players or any other top class player, then yes, the club would be ok. It would stop it looking like a lack of ambition if that is what happened. If we do the same as we did when Suarez went, and buy a stack of cheaper half-baked replacements, then no we would be making a huge mistake. We have to make a statement of intent, not as big a one as United made when they bought Di Maria, but something like that would be needed or we look like we have accepted midtable mediocrity.}

12 May 2015 21:59:02
but ed 01, who cares if everyone sees as 'midtable mediocrity'. isn't the only thing that matters is identifying the right players who will improve us as a team not careless 'marquee' buying. at the end of the day everyone starts off with zero points and it is up to the team assembled to get us to the top. you don't always have to spend big to win big.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - if you want to attract players with ambition to better themselves, and I don't just mean bloody tents, I mean players looking to compete at the highest level possible, then you have to show that the club matches their ambition. If you sell your better players and just bring in average replacements, pretty much like we did in the summer, then you make players think twice about joining you. They want to join a club that will allow them to progress. That has aims to move higher in the table, rather than being happy to sit where they are. Otherwise we just become a stepping stone and that is not a long term viable way to progress. Clubs that are stepping stones eventually drop down the table.}

12 May 2015 22:30:40
Ed001 is absolutely bang on here. We became a joke last summer

Agree3 Disagree1

12 May 2015 23:51:43
Agree 100%, if we sell Sterling, then bizarrely our only marquee names (ie. someone who is recognisable to a broad range of global fans not specific to Liverpool) would probably be Balotelli, Coutinho and perhaps Sakho and 2 of those don't play regularly for us.

If we sell Sterling we absolutely need to bring in someone top class, not only to replace but to show we have ambition to remain a CL challenger club as we're already dropping far behind Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd in terms of recognised global players and that impact who else we can then attract as everyone wants to play and learn from the best.

Agree3 Disagree0

13 May 2015 00:16:55
Which is a big reason we can't attract top or true up and coming players with high upside. If you are seen as a selling club, you are doomed to attract mediocrity. You have to show such players you are ready to compete and those players must see that ambition o they will move elsewhere. It's like an interview process but it is the club that is being interviewed and not the player. We need such players to let the club be in a better position to attract top players. With BR, we will not reach that level because he is unable to attract such players because he was a youth coach and will always be a youth coach who can't handle big players who will always disregard such a coach with no pedigree.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - my statement would be to hold on to Sterling.}

13 May 2015 09:23:30
Fellas,

A few weeks back you were all saying we're not one of the big clubs who can spend the money so we need to find a way of winning the title similar to that of Dortmund and Athletico.

Now you're saying we need marquee, statement signings.

Which is it?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - we don't, we need to hold on to our good young players first and foremost. If we lose them, we will be forced to make a statement signing to prove we have ambition.}

12 May 2015 18:51:37
According to Alan Smith on SLY Sports Milner is off to Arsenal. IF and only IF this is true then someone has definitely put the monkeys in charge of the zoo.
What does it say when we can't even bag a "Free" (I'm aware they are not entirely before the Eds slate me) transfer.
30 years old and £100,000 a week maybe? Would that have been good business?
I think so on a two year deal maybe. Got a lot of Prem and title winning experience.
What say you Ed's?

12 May 2015 20:51:13
No, he would not be, IMO, Milner is not what we need and we can get a better player who ACTUALLY fits our need with thoses sorts of wages instead of wasting it on a utility player (we already have one in Can) who will not improve us. How about paying 120k in wages for a striker who will score goals/ That would fill a great gap we currently have in the team, right? We are drunk w/ midfeilders and short on a goalscorer so IMO, no point bringing him in when in fact, he will NOT be free due to his wages and sign on bonuses. I respect your opinion even tho i disagree with it.

have you spoke to milner has he told you how much he wants in wages , that's ok then , maybe we shold only get players who want low wages and see where the club finishes , are you ok with sterling wanting more than 100k a week , put it this way james milner has done and achieved more than sterling so why should he get less than him , look at what milners won and how many assists and goals he has and england call ups while your at it , if stevie g scoring goals has not showed you what experience can do then you rate players different to a lot of us

Hey eds 01 just want your opinion on this.
Last season our play used to be very direct with the sole objective being to move the ball quickly to the goal.
But this season I have hardly seen any of that.
Earlier I convinced myself thinking that it was the ineffectivness of our dear strikers. but against Chelsea when we brought on sinclair-a player willing to provide the running

{Ed001's Note - so what is it you want my opinion on? I am confused sorry.}

Im pretty sure The system we played last year was not rogers idea.from what i remember one of the eds said that rogers had taken advise from marcelo belisa and that's the system we used last year!
The system we started with this season was rogers

Is that correct eds ? I could be wrong

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he did discuss it with Bielsa yes. The back 3 system we changed to was also not Rodgers' idea, he copied it from Basel after being unable to figure out how to cope with it when we faced it.}

I think he is asking in your opinion whether you think whether the change in style of play from last season, is a result of new players and poor strikers or something else. I think it is Rodgers.

Would you want to tie-down a player who wants to leave?

If you were an employer, would you want an employee who didn't want to work for you?

Would you want a miserable get bringing down the squad as he's been restricted in his options to leave?

Do we want a 'bad egg' (couldn't resist) in the squad?

Not a criticism Dbol, but it makes sense to sell as there will be a tasty bidding war.

Who knows, it might be part of a number of reasons why the squad seemed so unsettled in the latter part of the season.

Good luck to the lad though, as Liverpool will be rewarded handsomely for our efforts in making him the player he is.

One thing I am convinced about is that he will not be the same player elsewhere, and I say that not in arrogance but after assessing his qualities.

yeah I realise it's dream land stuff with Bale. Was just wondering about the compensation rule. Also if a player runs down his contract to become a free agent and get a "huge" sign on fee.

But until August I can spend a bit of time in dream land, where we can just get who ever we want.

I hate all these posts about cashing in on sterling, okay, his season hasn't been amazing but how many better under 21s in the world are there! And how many players do you realistically think liverpool could sign? Or that liverpool would sign and be successful given the track record?
You may say we have better coming through, but why not develop all of them, let them compete and if we need to sell, sell the worst one not, currently the best one! I believe he just needs a bit of tactical awareness and to develop his finishing and he will be well on the way, I think people forget how young he actually is, he could have 5 years until his prime or maybe more. Has he truly had a 'hot streak' yet, maybe if he grabs a few in the first few games of next season he could get 20 from the wing?
Maybe he could fade out and not really improve too much, but who else has a better shot than him right now, I can think of but a few, all unattainable!
He's still a liverpool player and in struggling to see why he'd want to stay at s club where the fans treat him like a traitor before he's even left, there may be a contract dispute but if you were told the world was at your feet at 20, by media agents etc, what would you do, liverpool is not his boyhood club remember, but he has done very well for us up to now.
I for one hope he stays for years to come

Why do we need any more U21 players? There are plenty of players who are better but are over 21. I actually genuinely think Sterling is over rated. Once he gets an injury and loses some pace he'll be average. He's not that skilful, his control is average, he rarely beats a man with skill rather than pace, his finishing is poor as is his final cross. All in all he is easily replaced.

Agree12 Disagree0

12 May 2015 17:04:07
He is young and still learning BUT from the wrong people i.e his agent who will only ruin him because based on his conduct, he is getting bad advice. He is not as good as "some' people are mtelling him or the hacks in the media, are making us believe. He needs a LOT of work on his game and LFC is the best place for that atm. but if he doesn`t wanna play here then by all means, he can go because we are not wanting for talented wide players with Ibe, Ojo, Kent Marko and the rest. I do feel we need to stop the knee jerk reactions and allow the process to play out this summer and we go from there.

Ever wondered that it might be because the club and especially the forever talkative BR, aired our laundry to the public by saying the offer he was made was fantastic and all that nonsense which did nothing but alienate him with many fans to the point of earning abuse from them because he didn't do what he was told and sign a contract he didn't wanna sign? He's a young naive player who needs to be helped and to be protected by his manager and not hung out to dry by said manager and club just because he refused to yield to pressure coming from them. Sterling will probably be sold for big money and the reason Sterling is upset is that he did not recieve the contract he wanted end of last season.
The club is looking to offload at least 6 players (manquilo, enrique, borini, balotelli, lambert, lucas and gerrard, toure, johnson will all leave.
Depay was very close but he did not want to wait until sterling situation was solved.
We are looking at spanish cb from bilboa and will try to bring in 2 strikers 2 midfielders and a right back.
Money is available but we need to offload players and Wright said that if Sterling leaves we be spending big this summer.

Something has been bugging me. Parts of this have been covered on here before but I would appreciate some other views or challenges.

Isn't the way we play pretty simple and easy to figure out? We play 3 forwards all quite centrally in shallow arrowhead formation. Coutinho, Sterling and recently Lallana. Aren't those 3 fundamentally the same player? One is faster than the others, one more skilful and one has a beard. But they are the same players trying to do the same thing - pull off cute little passes on the edge of the box and walk it into the net together.

It's like having 2 more Beardsleys instead of Digger and Aldo / Rushie. I loved Beardo by the way. Best second striker I can remember. But you can't have 3 second strikers!

When we do walk it into the net it looks awesome. But this is easy to defend. Their fullbacks tuck in meaning our attacker is either forced down the wing (where he can try from there to walk it into the net or (but this never happens) cross it to nobody over 5 foot zilch) OR the fullback forces the man inside into traffic (now our man is facing the fullback and the nearest centre back) and from there we try to shoot from distance (where, to be fair Coutinho has had a bit of joy) or we try to walk it into the net despite being outnumbered.

Forcing the other team to defend narrow does create a bit of space for full backs that bomb on. Johnson has found space a few times recently. So he overlaps and cuts it back to somebody that tries to walk it into the net gets a cross in to . nobody over 5 foot zilch.

We have got ENOUGH of these auxiliary type forwards. Why are we seemingly in the market every single time a "winger" becomes available?

Ok, Studge has been injured. But we'd still have played narrow and tried to walk it in.

Please please please can we get ourselves in the market for a proper goal poacher. One that can get his head on the end of crosses and can find that yard of space to tap it in when we do try to walk it in.

Am I wrong? Overr simplifying? Maybe I'm just like one of those grandads that years for the days of 5 forwards, backward headers and balls (footballs) taht could break your neck?

Believable4 Unbelievable4

12 May 2015 12:42:04
You are not wrong. BR loves an attacking midfielder. He is buying more and more every window, and soon one will play at RB and be our back-up keeper.

Agree10 Disagree1

12 May 2015 12:44:08
I'm no coach or expert and I'm sure my answer will highlight this. For me the three players you mention work as they are interchangeable, which causes confusion for the assigned defender. Who picks up who and suddenly the one you're marking isn't there cause they've made a run somewhere else, no need to go towards that other one cause my CB partners job is him etc.
Secondly the full backs tucking in to help as you suggest, isn't that when the attacking wing backs come into play either into space or drawing away this help? as well as this these 'creative' players should be expected to unlock and make intelligent runs as they are supposed to be clever at reading the game and the talent to provide.

Just my thoughts, could be completely off

Agree2 Disagree2

12 May 2015 13:10:26
Yeah - but it's not that confusing is it. 3 similar players doing the same thing. Nobody really goes man for man these days so a well organised zonal system shouldn't have too much bother in coping with them interchanging. And the proof is in the pudding - it doesn't seem to consistently cause problems. Not for the other team anyway.

Yes it creates space for the full backs. But getting to the byeline doesn't much help when you've 3 plastic strikers who aren't going to get their nut on anything or attack the space like a proper goalscorer would.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 May 2015 13:32:35
I agree. We need a Striker also. Look at Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Real, Bayern etc. They all have strikers who the support strikers or other forward players can look to put a ball in the box and expect them to be there

Agree1 Disagree0

12 May 2015 13:45:18
FSG can see that buying young potential hasn´t payed off, so we go in the opposite direction, we buy old players with no potential. We sign up didi Hamann who will be giving an revolutionary new role, diagonally inverted Winger/sweeper, and his main responsibility will be throw-ins and tap-ins.

Sterling ofcourse, will have to adapt his game around Hamann, and will be forced to play as Box-to-box CB. His main task will be to help Hamann with cramps, but also being there for Brendan Rodgers to receive praise about his worldclass talent, being outstanding, having great vision, enourmous Character etc.

Last but not least our marquee signing will be the great baker of Lankasterchire in order to lure Yaya Toure. Yaya will ofcourse be in charge of birthday parties and have a part time role in Enriques instagram adventure.

Ofcourse during next season, Brendan will be forced to play all players in the attacking midfield role, including the baker, which means we will play a 0-10-0 formation. Unfortunately we only have 75% ball possesion, which means we are 4% short of having a 87% chance of not loosing.

Agree6 Disagree0

12 May 2015 14:01:11
Yeah no point in them being interchangeable if they are more or less the same type of player. Only worth while changing them round if they are different, say we need more pace on the left and more trickery on the right then swapping players round to get the most of them makes sense.

BR loves AM`s and is stock-piling them in droves every window as someone said already, with no idea what do with them or prolly play them at wingback and let the fullbacks rot on the bench, sold or loaned out. the prob is not that the players are interchangeable or not. The prob is that there is not definite, tactical direction as to how we need to play. I am all for adapting and improvising BUT with BR, he does it TOO LATE and only after getting found out and criticized for it and costs us games. That is not a proactive manager. That is insanity. A good manager should know after 20 mins that something is not working and fix it. Not after 5 games and 4 losses.

I'm not suggesting OUR front three can do this or at this level, but my answer was more that the idea of these three same type players can work that way and it works in the way Barca do it cause of the quality.

None of Messi Neymar or Suarez are out and out strikers or wingers, they are clever talented attacking players all the 'same' and it works well for them. There is a huge gulf in class hence why it looks rubbish with our three

I really do not understand the support some on this site are giving Rodgers.
Any other manager with this squad would of walked the team into the top 4 with their eyes closed.
Rodgers season has had a Huge failings at start of season, a small patch of success, and then another massive let down.
Since April 18th, Man Utd have gained 3 points out of 12. And we couldn't make them pay for their mistakes?? We've single handedly help paint over the cracks at Utd by gifting them 4th spot. Next season we won't stand a chance.

He has made us rubbish and the laughing stock of the league. he simply cannot motivate the team, he got away with it last year due to Suarez being motivation on the pitch giving the others belief.

If Rodgers stays another season, we probably won't make it to the champions league for another 5 years

Believable14 Unbelievable1

I think he suffers from a bit of satellite delay. Other coaches figure us out. We keep things the same for way too long and have a bad run. After the delay the information reaches Rodgers. We change something and it works for a while and we go on a decent run.

Then other coaches figures us out . repeat cycle until EITHER the satellite delay decreases and BR learns to stay ahead of the game OR the owners run out of patience. In that latter case BR will probably keep showing up at Melwood for at least a fortnight before his brain receives and processes the information that he has been fired.

Agree6 Disagree1

12 May 2015 13:11:08
Just in that first bit, walking the top four with this squad. I agree that Rodgers signed these players so should be accountable, but we lost Sturridge to injury and Suarez wasn't replaced properly. That I think was 60 goals plus however many assists taken away. Although Balotelli has turned into a shadow of a player I doubt anyone would have predicted how poor he's turned out. Leaving Lambert and Borini. Well we would have liked to sell Fabio to Sunderland, he didn't want this so had to stay. Lambert was to be a plan B, but that was when plan A (Sturridge) was playing. This was taken away and Lambert became redundent in effect. Plus without Suarez no one else drags players up and demands the small level (see Sterling last season to this)

So that was the area which got us to 2nd to be honest, the goals and the world class player. What stopped us from 1st was leaking goals and defence, well that has improved. It's all still not great, clearly, but something possible to change was corrected and improved and just bad luck the other end. This for me means most managers would have struggled to achieve top 4 and it also shows an area needing improvement was improved.

In a season where the PLis God aweful, this squad was defo good enuff for top 4 because the other teams are struggling big time and had we not wasted half a season screwing around with the incompetence and stubbornness that typifies BR, we would have been right in the Mix and the fact that we will finish 5th shows that. Max, BR knew LS would be gone and that Studge would defo get injured YET he bought or oversaw the arrival of Balo while rejecting Bony who was ready because we had CL so using studge`s injury as an excuse to absorb BR of blame flies in the face of the facts and clearly, does not even pass the laugh test. It is not bad luck or fate. It was bad planning, arrogance, tactical ineptitude, poor man and financial management and ego trips from the head man that cost us and those need to be rectified otherwise, we will be doing this again next season.

Don't think FSG will get rid of Rodgers, another year and then I think they will decide. We always knew this was going to be a working progress the way the club went employing a young unproven manager that is trying to promote youth. I think one of the main reason we can't sign top top player is because the club won't give them wages they want so we go for players that are good but are willing the accept wages under 100k. I think Rodgers is a good manager but I don't think he will be ever good enough with the squad we have to be challenging for the title and guaranteed top4 every season. We rely to heavy on Coutinho, sterling, hendo and Studge to do the business for us. I hope we do sign a top striker( not Ings and benteke) and a top midfielder if we can then I really do have hope for us for next year as clique as its sounds. YNWA

Is that a sick joke? We were second last season and now fifth this year with double the money spent yet we are a work in progress. At this rate, when will we ever get there? Hi Guys,

So another year nearly up & I suppose its been underwhelming to say the least. Looking on to next season, my opinion is there are plenty of players with uncertain futures at the club. Be it on unconstructive loan spells, not agreeing to new deals or simply not getting played I am sure a assessment will be made come the summer and a fair outcome for club and players will be reached for those concerned. I am convinced some changes should be made, firstly to the manager in which I think we should make a firm attractive proposition to Klopp. The most likely outcome its rejection but i'd rather we were rejected then never trying at all & who knows, I guess stranger things have happened in the world. Some tinkering with the committee, i'm not sure all these voices and opinions are the way forward. I am more of a fan of a sporting analyst working side by side a manager and identifying the weaknesses in the team and analysing what kind of player the club then need acting necessary to work on finding a player that meets the criteria. Its all well and good saying names and being drawn into bidding wars and high profile back page news stories but I think we need to be smarter than that.

Ive had a little think of players we need, you can also assume the senior players I haven't mentioned are not part of my plans. The other younger players that haven't been mentioned you can assume will remain in the youth for this season coming. So if we are playing the role club manager, this how I see we could benefit and improve our team for next term.

I am a huge fan of Higuain, whether he would join us or not is a different thing but a option that could be available for transfer this summer. Not just a goal scorer, he adds a wealth of experience at international level and would be a great player for the younger players to learn from. Possibly, dare I say it, the best option out there for Liverpool at present and I would make a monumental effort to bring him to Liverpool.

Midfielders - Coutinho Lallana Teixera Henderson Can Lucas Iturraspe Rossiter

Iturraspe has been a senior figure at Bilbao for some years, he has the bite, power and physical stature to get into most top Premier League teams. He is coming into the better years of his career, with a 40M euro buyout clause, it may be seen a stumbling block unless Bilbao were willing to negotiate a more acceptable offer. Who knows, but he is a player I very much admire and think he offers more on a whole than Allen who is just innefective.

Defense - Moreno Smith Sakho Lovren Howedes Illori Darmian McLaughlin

Howedes has made himself a important part of the German National Squad and is a leader from the back. Aerially very strong and exceptional positional sense I believe he would be the perfect partner for Lovren or Sakho at centre back. I think Skrtel is a good old bruiser but he makes the job for his partner at Centre back really difficult most of the time and lacks general quality on the ball and off it for the way we play. I believe since Carra and Hyypia left we never replaced that voice and command at the back in my opinion Howedes fits the bill in every aspect. Darmian is someone I've only watched the last 14 months or so but looks a real player. We have some up short over the years with Johnson being our number 1 right back and although Johnson has the ability to go forward but not back, Damian has the ability to do both and I think would be a great and again, obtainable purchase.

Goalkeeper - Cech Mignolet

It's a no brainer, the best benched keeper in the world and still one of the best around, with copious amounts of premier league experience he would be the obvious choice. Whether or not he would join is another thing with many Champions League clubs interested we would likely find it difficult.

Like I say its all opinion based but would love you views and possible amendments.

Cheers

Good suggestions, but Smith and McLaughlin will leave this summer. Smith was called back from him loan as he didn't agree a new contract at LFC and he has not been involved with the U21s after that. McLaughlin has had many injuries and they have been playing him as a winger to accommodate Randall at RB, who also is incidentally out of contract in the summer. McLaughlin's chance came and went when Rodgers's decided to loan out Wisdom, then loan in Manquilio, and then play Emre Can at RB.

I don't see Cech as a possibility. Mignolet will not agree to being a back-up as he made that very clear when Rodgers said he wanted both Mignolet and Reina at LFC.Ituraspe is a good player, but no interest, and even if there was interest, we need Lucas or Allen to leave for that to happen, and I don't think both will leave with Gerrard already on his way.

Can't see any of those additions to be honest. Got to face reality here, no CL football, no world class players that others dream of playing with, wage structure around performance bonuses (when others might pay straight) and a no name manager with a cv full of failure.

We are not in a position like Chelsea, Utd or City and even Arsenal. We're 5th. Those players, Higuain, Benzema, Cech etc don't have to play outside CL yet, don't have to accept bonus related wage packets yet.

Sounds negative for negatives sake, but it's not. I'm at total peace where we are. We are a massive club in terms of history and name, grateful for that and those memories. Also glad every season feels like a blank sheet and total expectation to compete with some great players. I look at other big names with big history (not a patch on ours) Blackpool, Leeds, Rangers and Newcastle and am really glad we aren't in that position.

Our squad, youth and a couple of quality editions, but realistic ones we could snatch top 4 next season. Also if we use the squad and play youth and fringe in the Europa. A fresh quality starting 11 each prem game. Then next summer buy the type of player you mention like Howdes etc that's when we push on and have the pull, imo.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 May 2015 13:25:19
@The real AG. I think two of the best things that could possibly happen in the summer would be signing Cech and Mignolet not agreeing to be backup.

The third best thing that could happen would be Mignolet replacing De Gea at that other lot.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 May 2015 17:24:39
The best est thing to happen to us should be to start with a new manager and new ideas, IMO because everything else can be easily tweaked to get us going because we ahve a good squad with a solid academy. All we need is a head man who knows what he is doing at all times instead of half tthe time.

Agree0 Disagree4

Milner is a player who will make no difference to our league position. If get doesn't come I am not bothered. He offers nothing but another squad number and high wages.

Believable7 Unbelievable7

12 May 2015 12:39:11
He's a stockier, less skilled version of Coutinho. A fatter, slower Sterling. A clean shaven Lallana. A short haired Markowicz. A pale Ibe.

To be fair, I do like the lad and his doggedness in particular. He would add a bit of steel to us. We will need to find that somewhere after Stevie has gone.

But other than that I agree he would be another in an already-too-long list of very very similar players and so won't make much difference.

Agree3 Disagree4

12 May 2015 13:29:48
MIlner is exactly the type of player we need!! He is nothing like what we have but what we need. He works hard a non stop but he is not a henderson. He is great pushing up but defensively good also. He passes when he should and will put low crosses in all day.
I would rather have him than another quick but slightly feeble winger.
He could play in centre or wing and can play pushing up or sitting back. IMo he would do a fair job of doing Gerrards role with the likes if can, and swapping their roles for sitting and pushing

Agree4 Disagree2

12 May 2015 13:42:30
@gareth

So he's nothing like what we have but he will put low crosses in all day. Like Sterling. And Ibe. And Markowicz. And Lallana.

He can play in all the positions you said - just like our increasingly long list of interchangable midgets.

But you are right, he does work hard and we need more of that.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 May 2015 13:47:02
Think you're wrong. Milner is a proven player of quality, high work rate and something we don't have anywhere once Gerrard and Toure go, a winner. He is the sort that young players will take advice about diet, training and see his tireless work on the pitch.
Our dressing room will have no winners and no senior pros that look after themselves like Milner, for free his wages will still be less then what others who've won nothing and need mid season holidays are asking for.

He`s not who we need to make a diff in the squad. He`s harworking and so what? Is that a quality right now? Well so is Suarez but would you trade one for the other? Didn`t think so. We need players who will make a diff and Milner is not that player especially at the wages he would want cos, he won`t be "free" as many on here think.

12 May 2015 11:57:25
Just a couple of things I want to say firstly I would do everything possible to keep Sterling he is a player of immense potential, he needs to improve on aspects of his game but he is young and do you really think with we could replace him with a player of the same ability I would doubt it. He has been so poorly advised he needs to change his agent even if he leaves his agent had made him suffer abuse from his own fans. He has made so many mistakes he could probably write a book on how not to manage a client. Sterling needs to sign a new deal or leave. I would love him to stay but I'm a realist if nothing is signed he will go and I would not expect these crazy figures going around like 50 million that's just people being silly. The club I am sure will sell him and do what's right making Rodgers look even more stupid telling the fans he will stay.I just hope we don't waste any more money on players who I have hardly ever seen play for the club. I am talking about all the players on loan around the world who were signed and never really given the opportunity.I also hope we don't sign players who will stop the development of a promising youngster in that position.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

12 May 2015 13:32:48
I have a feeling that he is seen as having "potential" as he is very young and very stupid. Perhaps naive would be a better word but I'm going to stick with stupid.

His best years may already be behind him.

Perhaps he will get a big money move to Real Madrid, play a few games, get offloaded to Newcastle be a big-name-no-game sub at United and finish off his career at Stoke. That's what happens to money grabbing little upstarts that leave us too soon.

The only difference between him and Owen is that Owen was more calculating than stupid, and was properly a world star for a short time at least. And Owen got to watch us with the CL on TV the year he left in search of silverware. That won't happen with Sterling.

Is it a coincidence that Sterling has the same agent as Berahino of WBA and look at the trouble and disrespect both players are showing

If thet continue to allow this wholesale greed i'm sure that other fans like me will cancel Sky Sports stop buying overpriced shirts and ultimately disengage from a sport that is no longer owned by the working class man. I love my club and always will but this brattish greed is ruining it for me and my children

Hello to all EDS and fellow REDS

Thank you for all the great work EDs

The crazy season is nearly here and this, hopefully, will be my last post until next season.
Fellow REDS, please don't despair about Sterling or any other player who seemingly wants to leave. Let's get a good price for Raheem, if he goes, and this time bring in what is needed. Kovacic and Ings would be a step in the right direction, IMO. Others will follow I am sure.
Personally I would like Yesil to be given a chance. Our youngsters will step up to the mark. We have some exceptional youngsters in the academy, great for Europa league (I know)who will only prove their worth if they are given a chance.

Have a great summer dear EDS and fellow REDS

Hi Eds, read an online interview with Tony Barrett of The Times yesterday. He reported that the academy has stopped buying up the best young talent from around the UK (Sterling, Ibe, Sinclair) and will concentrate on local development. He said he had no idea why they are pursuing this strategy.

Have you any knowledge on the matter and how do you rate the academy staff Brendan has put in place?

Thanks to you all.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Firstly, Brendan Rodgers does not decide on the academy staff - the academy is nothing to do with him. As for the academy, it is going well but I am not aware of policy changes. It is however always difficult to buy and relocate kiddies from the UK and near impossible from abroad. A local-based approach makes sense, but I doubt it would be exclusive.}

12 May 2015 09:55:19
Seems a bit off the mark given we just bought Paulinho (17) from A.D Sanjoanense - perhaps I'm mistaken and that's first team business rather than Academy but we're already overloaded with a huge foreign contingent in the Academy. We currently have German Samed Yesil, Spanish talents Rafael Paez, Madger Gomes, Sergi Canos and Pedro Chirivella, American Marc Pelosi, Hungarian Kristof Polgar and we have the Portuguese talents of Toni Gomes, Joao Teixeira and Tiago Ilori at Anfield. AND this list does not include young British players that are not local. Seems Tony Barrett has taken 2+2 and run with the answer 5 IMHO. That said, it's about time we did a bit more in terms of local development of youth.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - I suspect what he is referring to is the expectations of the new staff running the academy and not those that made most of those purchases.}

12 May 2015 08:39:53
So Sterling is selling his house and Thompson is saying that he expects him to leave in the Summer now that we are not in CL.

Seems that's that then.

I wouldn't believe anything that comes out the mouth of the very Arsenal biased John Cross of the Mirror.

12 May 2015 09:10:10
Get over sterling . In my view he's not as good as made out . He's final ball is atrocious . Get top dollar for him . I'd leave him out last 2 games . If he don't want to be there give a lad a chance . Use the oppertunity to give ojo a run out or someone else .

Agree8 Disagree0

12 May 2015 09:26:53
No big loss imo. Sterling cannot shoot or pass the ball if his performances in the last 8-10 games are anything to go by. Very inconsistent and wanting too much too soon indicates a troubled attitude which will no doubt haunt the club's reputation if the player is forced to stay against his will. Anything more than 30 million GBP would be a good deal for LFC and Ibe imo is a much better and matured player with his feet firmly on the ground.
The problem with Sterling is that he got too much too soon. The media made him out to be some extraordinary talent capable of winning the Balon D Or and this clearly got into his head. Sterling may well turn out to be a good player but world class??? Not a chance imo.

That might be relevant.

Sterling has been restless for some months. Rightly or wrongly he probably views Liverpool as consistently in 5th, 6th or 7th.

Hey Eds. With Ings looking likely to come in and Origi arriving, plus Sinclair and Yesil to support Sturridge; even if Aspas, Ballo, Borini and Lambert are all to go the squad still looks top heavy with strikers. Is a so called 'big name' striker which the fans appear to crave really going to happen? There's no doubt goals are badly needed but BR appears to have created a squad that is top heavy in many areas with his own signings which will surely make recruitment now challenging

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I have explained repeatedly - there is nothing more I can say at this time.}

12 May 2015 09:10:57
If we sign Ings then I would see it as one of two things (assuming we sell the strikers you have mentioned):

1 - We go and sign another top class forward and Ings is then unnecessary padding to the squad.

2 - We no longer go for a forward and we are no better than we are now.

Agree4 Disagree1

12 May 2015 09:34:57
Hopefully we go for a top class striker its what we desperately need.

As we have it now I would say the club imagined sturridge and balo as our main strikers with lambert and borini as back up

With ings in they hopefully see it as sturridge and ? as our main strikers with ings and origi as backup.

If ings is seen as back up which hopefully he is the question is do we need him with Sinclair and yesil? The answer is no in my eyes but as usually we will probably just buy a load of squad players making no difference to our starting 11 what so ever.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 May 2015 10:07:35
I think Aspas, Balotelli and Borini will all be moved on this summer. Lambert will be dependent upon whether he wants playing time or whether he is content to be at his childhood dream club. Studge will be lucky to play a competitive game before the middle to end of October, Sinclair will be used sparingly and Sterling is likely moving on. Other than Origi and Ings and ONLY IMHO one more forward will come in.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 May 2015 11:07:18
We need a CM and a ST. Anything else is just wasted in my opinion. There are far too many talents coming through being ignored. We have a squad built for champions league (ironically we were tripe) so we need to downsize before we buy more.

Does gerrard need replacing? By his own standards he has been nothing but a problem the last year and a bit. Granted his service was well received but he has struggled for form right up until the last 2 games we just played which came too late to make any impact.

I would rather we sell big, buy small and use the youth around us than shell out another fortune on overpriced squad players.

That being said, lacazetee should be a priority. A very sturridge like player.

Hi eds been having a browse on the other sites especially chelsea. They seem such a well run club. Do you think its possible for lfc to eventually get to a structure like that with fsg?

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - It is an apt question to ask Dorset Red, particularly given that so many see adding a "Director of Football" (assume this to be synonymous "Sporting Director" or similar job title) as the resolution of the issues that have been bugging Liverpool. So, I guess the first point to make is that different clubs are run in very different ways, even within the EPL. I know how Chelsea operate in detail and can to some extent explain that if it helps.

Taking Liverpool first with the management structure as it is and the handling of players and potential transfers. The obvious comments are:
(a) There seems to be little planned structure as to how to progress players from the academy and reserves through to the first team squad. The loans to the likes of Wigan for Ojo are very ad hoc and not structured and planned over a season. It doesn't help anyone.
(b) There is clearly a major issue with the signings from the summer before last with several players being sent out on loan simply because the club does not know what to do with them. It doesn't help anyone.
(c) Washing all of the issues arising with the playing staff in public is simply not the done thing. The situations surrounding the multiple disciplinary issues with Balotelli earlier in the season should not have been dealt with in public. The whole issue surrounding his fitness, the issues with Roy Hodgson and England, his mid-season vacation, his contract issues, his two "party" indiscretions were matters for the club and not for the press room. The lessons learned from allowing Suarez to swan around the world trashing the club in the press were clearly not learned.
(d) The transfer committee were created to help overcome clear short comings that Brendan Rodgers has in the transfer market when left on his own. It has not worked for a number of reasons, not least is the heavy involvement of Rodgers. The Manchester City model is similar but critically does not include the manager - this is very much in line with how many Spanish and Italian clubs work.

However, it should be noted that the club has done a lot to address many of the other issues it had and to start to push for commercial success - which it is doing very well with. A new office has been opened in London with a full time UK-based overlord now in place. The medical department has been cleansed and revamped. Three senior members of the scouting organisation have been ousted and the set-up revamped, work is well underway on the stadium - so it is far from all bad.

But that big decision still needs to be taken. FSG and Michael Gordon have been taking advice as I have explained. They will want to do what is best for the club in order to move toward getting the on field success to match and enhance the off field commercial success. This is really now a one-shot deal for them, they cannot afford to screw up any more. The club is a money pit and selling now would likely not give them a return on their investment taking in to account the crippling debts and the interest. They need to get it right.

As for Chelsea, they operate a very different model and, whilst having a Director of Football he does not interfere with the first team at all, but very much acts as a filter in checking out prospective new players, liaison with some of the directors and liaison with the other teams. It works well. They plan well to ensure that loans are structured. Each loan player from Chelsea has a liaison officer assigned (some are ex-players) who regularly see them, deal with any issues and report progress back to the club. For instance there was an issue with Lukaku and the club decided at the start of 2014 that he would be sold in the summer. His liaison tried very hard to reverse that decision, but to no avail. There was also a problem with a couple of players in the Netherlands and that resulted in the club having them get involved with spending sometime with the local community (schools and charities). In Italy I know that the clubs with a significant number of players on loan have regular contact and bring them back as a group for training on a couple of occasions mid-season. I am sure there will be someone at Liverpool keeping contact with the younger players on loan. In the case of Ojo and when he first went on loan, there were legal responsibilities as he was still, in law, a child.}

12 May 2015 09:23:12
I suspect that some of the problems with lack of planning and consistency in loans for academy players is also due to Rodgers having overall responsibility for the playing side.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Rodgers will not be dealing with loans for academy players. The academy has it's own staff - who again have been largely revamped this year by the owners.}

Just curious why you think it's a bad move.

{Ed002's Note - It was unplanned, not long enough to give him any benefit and probably too early.}

Anybody beating up on the owners in a bid to absorb BR or any other manager of blame will recieve nothing but slating from me. Just saying!

Ohio, who gave Rodgers a new contract last season?

Banter only, with all the talk re a new manager what do you think of a back to the "bootroom" scenario. Toshack as manager (good enough for Real Madrid, albeit 1 season) Keegan assistant Manager. (ex England) Steve Clark (if willing) coach and Roy Evans advisory role of sorts. Could be the sun/age has got to me but plenty of experience there and passion plenty. Thoughts

{Ed001's Note - that would be a disaster!! Toshack's time has gone. Keegan couldn't handle the pressure. Steve Clark is happy managing. Evans deserves better.}

How about a Spice Boys management team. God as manager. J Redknapp (although Harry would be a great one with his dodgy knee) as physio. Babb as defensive coach.

What do you think?

I'm guessing Rodgers will be still in place at the beginning of next season which is fine by me. However I just hope Jurgen Klopp doesn't find a club straight away.
He's the only available manager I think would be suited so if we have a bad start, it would be nice to have that option come January

Can you really see Rodgers being sacked? I can't. Not until he's spent another £100m on "improving" our squad and not improving the 1st team

Keeping BR for six months is a disaster and shows that all that revamping by the owners wouldn`t have fixed a damn thing. Why? because BR has made the same mistakes recurrently for three years and till this very second, nothing has changed. he spent 100m and got us from 2nd to 5th yet in his eyes, we are still improving. Only someone as deluded as he is will believe that and IMO, these owners might b naive but deluded, they are defo not. As for what will happen, nobody knows what will happen so guesswork is all many of us are reduced to atm.

Apologies if this had already been mentioned. Givin Emre Can's performances at right CB this season albeit he is a CM. can you see him being pushed into CM next season and would this open up the possibility of a new CB being sought after. A lot of what ifs I know but I feel with Stevie leaving and the possible arrival of a new CM coming in to fill the void I think Emre would be best suited to stay playing CB to gain more game time as he is still very young. What are you thoughts and cheers for any reply.

Skrtel, Sakho, Ilori, Lovren, Wisdom, Paez, Jones, Toure all still at the club (Toure may leave). I'd like to see Ilori given a shot, I'd start Sakho and Lovren together. I think Skrtel (and Rodgers) are the common denominators in our poor defense rather than Skrtel being the one consistent defender I think he puts other defenders under pressure with his positioning.

He's good at the rough stuff but not the clever stuff. Sakho/Lovren as the first choice pairing, Ilori and Skrtel to come in and cover. Ilori is so quick for a CD we could play a higher line if he was in the team. He won't get a shot under Rodgers though.

look out for ed002's comments regarding the amounts of CBs we have that need to be managed before we even think about getting one.

Have you not noticed that teams are targeting Can as he's not a defender? He looks great bringing the ball out of defence but his defending isn't great. He struggles with players running at him, for a big fella he is often beaten in the air and his positioning and marking are not up to scratch.

I cannot wait to see him in midfield next season. If he plays a half dozen games next season in defence as cover, absolutely fine. If he plays another 30 games in defence next season then I would consider that to be diabolical mis-management of both the player and the squad.

Lmred has listed our options at centre back. There are loads there. Coates is likely to be gone but he wasn't included, others will go too but that's fine as you see we have plenty!

I do realise we have plenty of options regarding CB. But only Sakho Skrtel Lovren are in for a shout as first team quality at the moment. With Toure capable of making many mistakes when playing I suspect he could be allowed to leave possibly Coates too. As regards Ilori Wisdom lloyd Jones there is some young talent there and I hope they are giving some good game time this year. I did notice players targeting Can many times, hazard at the Bridge in the Cup game as an example showed his weakness against fast skilful players but I do feel he has done a great job considering his age and the fact it's not his natural position. I'm just pointing out that hopefully he is givin game time for his progression much like Carra's early years where he played a vast amount of different positions as I feel he can be a very important player for Liverpool for many years. After all the players BR brought in last year, for me, he has been the standout purchase.

@Chardy, I agree with you that he has been our stand out purchase from last summer and I too want him to get plenty of game time. Midfield though for me and defence should only be on the rare occasion for cover.

Toure has been offered another contract but still may go but either way as you even say we have 3 clear first team centre backs at the moment. For me the younger players, who you say you want to get good game time, should definitely be allowed to be covering the rest of centre back positions.

If we go sign another then when could they possibly get this game time?

Even if Toure goes as well we have Wisdom and Ilori both returning and it's time we use the players we have rather than sign someone else to be backup.
