i check out this site everyday an am addicted .having played myself for 25 years at local standard and now coach youth football , . i read all the posts about signing superstars and marquee signings that people want . i think alot of people lose sight of what is needed at the moment . i see alot of comments about downing not being worth the money being quoted but he is an excellent player , and year in year out produces the goods and has stood out for whoever he has played for , he will fit in straight away and not need time to adapt so if he helps us get back to where we belong the he will be priceless .we must also remember how in the second half of the season we gave the mancs and citeh a good hiding saw off chelsea and were as good as anyone in the run in . we had a strong starting eleven that is a match for any side but the problem was our squad wasnt strong enough to cope with injuries and also not the quality from the bench to change games . the players kk is bringing in are players who can add something different and make us stronger . when we played the so callled lesser teams we sometimes struggled to break them down and ended up drawing and even losing games , we were crying out for someone like charlie adam who could pick a pass or set piece to change the pattern of a game . and again he will fit in and not need time to settle.we have no euro football this year so our total focus will be winning domestic matches with proven premiership players . as the saying goes we will be dressing for the job we have and not the one we want . i also see peoples line ups for next year and on paper they look good but too many ommit players like kuyt and lucas as these guys are probably first names on the team sheet in kk, s eyes because you can have the best players in the world but you need to have the balance with players like kuyt and lucas who roll there sleeves up and work so hard for the team .
i for one am looking forward to the new season and am delighted that kk is pin pointing the players that we need and going all out to get them , take us back to the top where we belong.

Hi eds, quick question for you; if Aly Cissokho is so highly rated why is he available for transfer and why at such a reasonable price? I haven't seen much of him play but from what I have seen I've been impressed, I just don't understand why Lyon are willing to let him leave Does he have an attitude problem or is it those spinal concerns resurfacing? Thanks for your time, love the site...check it every 10mins ha

Cheers,
Red Pedro. {Ed009's Note - He has had a few moments with the Lyon fans and I believe he wants to leave the club. The player will almost certainly be leaving the club. I believe he would be a very good signing for Liverpool and is available for the right price. He would be a very good signing. Any "attitude problems" that may or may not be there would be sorted out by Kenny I am sure.}

Ed so whats the news on raul is he staying for deffo next season? what are yoour thoughts on the formation Ed?
Rumours growing on downing to sign on thursday for £18.5m, more speculation on bastos growing in france
YNWA
B {Ed009's Note - He isn't staying for definite. If he is willing to lower his wage demands he could well stay but he is on far too much money for a 'squad player'.}

Bad move by our club charging fans who pay cash for tickets at the box office a booking fee this a PR nightmare and the press are already having a field day so come on lfc do the fans a favour cut out the booking fee

TC YNWA

The booking fee is a fee the card companies charge. It's actually slightly more because the card companies also charge for refunds or any other activity. They also charge for chip and pin readers and the internet connection to process payments over the web.

The card companies justify this on the cost of security and insurance. Therefore retailers have little choice other than to pass it on to the customers who pay by card, or absorb it into the item cost - but that would mean people paying cash would have to pay it which isn't fair.

Debit cards should pay a lower charge and in a lot of cases no charge at all, but credit cards w
ill always attract a charge as the credit card companies use the chage to offset their fraud losses.

Maybe you didnt read my post correctly they are charging booking fees for CASH SALES

hi,
this is not liverpool-related, but i wanted to dicuss it with my-kinda-guys. i heard there are some major money/ business problems concerning berlusconi with ac milan and that he probably has to sell the club? another piece of banter i heard was that the club was run very fishy and maybe they'll go down because of all the weird business? do you guys know anything for sure? i can't find it in the football news really, only small notes.
thanks

Ed what is going on with Downing and Doni?
People are saying we have had a bid acepted for Downing and Doni was supposed to have a medical today?

Also do you know of any other players we are interested in that we can expect bids to be submitted for after these two have signed?

Finally, do you think that Henderson was signed to play on the right wing? Because with Gerrard, Lecas and Adam all in contention to play centre mid and Henderson onkly being 20 he could be waiting a long time to become a first team regular in that position.

Cheers
Harry The Red {Ed001's Note - Doni was flying in today, I was told his medical was scheduled for this week, today if possible. Just a few last minute wage details to be ironed out, but I expect his signing to be confirmed in the next day or two. Downing is being held up by Villa's need to sign a replacement, remember how the Torres sale was held up until we signed Carroll? Well this is a similar situation, they want N'Zogbia but his wage demands are excessive, over 80k a week. I think Henderson has been signed to mainly play on the right, yes. Oh and the other signings, I expect further movement on Bastos, Cissokho and maybe Vargas, dependant on whether the movement involves giving up on the first two or not.}

Ins
Henderson - 16m
Adams - 7m
Doni - free
Cissokho - 10m
Dann - 12m
Bastos or Turan - 11/14m
Adam Johnson - 18m
Park Chu Young - 8m

Outs
Brad Jones
Konchesky
Poulsen
Meireles
Cole
Ngog
Kyrgiakos
Spearing (Loan)
Shelvey (Loan)

In defence Cissokho and Dann can add a bit more depth but also puts more faith in Kelly, Flanno, Wilson, Smith and Robinson if injuries happen.
At the moment the midfield is to large. Poulsen, Meireles and Cole will not get the game time they want so we should lower the wage bill. For me Henderson was brought in because of his potential and ability to replace Gerrard so he may be on the bench for a bit this season. Bastos/Turan and Johnson will be on the wings with Henderson, Gerrard, Kuyt, Saurez and Sterling as back-up.
For me up front is missing a player with alot of pace and strong ball control. Park Chu Young is alot cheaper than Aguero and is desperate to play for the club.
Alot of people are wondering where Mata is but most football fans know his best position is just behind the ST and not on the wing.

12 Jul 2011 21:53:45
Doni, Downing are in the bag. Cissokho looking like favourite to get LB spot. This probably leaves 1 more signing which will be a striker. I'm thinking a striker around the £10/15m mark to support Suarez & Carroll. Only names I can think of are :- Doyle, Long, Rodallega, Roux, Affelay, Huntelaar.
What chances of these Ed? (out of 10)

Gav the RED {Ed001's Note - sorry I don't do the out of 10 thing.}

SMASHING NEWS

Liverpool have entered into talks with tennis star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, looks like he'll be coming to Anfield to keep the pigeon numbers down by firing tennis balls at them, I'm actually a pigeon enthusiast so I don't condone this but I'm sure it's whats best for the club. Flying under the radar,

liverpool have been linked with a couple of youngsters at aik , mohamed and teteh bangura any truth ed all so ganso at santos again strong links any truth there either. {Ed001's Note - just seems to be papertalk, they have been linking the Banguras with a different Prem club each week.}

More of an amusing observation...

Check The last picture on the LFC website of Day 2 training photos...

KKs face at Raul Meireles

Just thought it was amusing with all the talk of Meireles nearing the exit door. Looks like they could be discussing something to do with that or nothing of course

if inter are interested in mierellis or aquilini - why not set up a part ex with schneider and give the mancs a run for their money

Question for Ed001 - I have been an avid observer of your site for a long time now and have watched with interest in how this site has evolved. I note tonight that we welcome Ed033. Bloody hell it has has moved on since the early days Anyway the question is, without naming names and putting peoples reputations at risk, could you please give us loyal followers an insight into the backgrounds of some of the Eds i.e. Journos, former players, pundits, medical staff, groundsmen, players dog walkers, great aunties twice removed. I expect the approval process is rather intense to become an Ed to ensure you protect your brand but I (and I expect many others) am intrigued to know a little more. Keep up the good work but be careful you control the "monster".
Cornish red {Ed001's Note - that depends on the site, but as we closely monitor the posts we can tend to give people a trial for short periods and then get rid if they don't work out as it can be done very easily. Though we now have enough in place for a number of sites so we would only want ones with impeccable sources who can add something in terms of knowledge. It is not imperative because we have a widget that we can pass on information directly between editors, so it is more important that editors can make the chat interesting. Trouble is that I don't want it to be all about the editors, I want the contributors to be the main focus of the site. That is what it should be about.}

It is obvious that downing will sign for liveepool before friday or what do you think ed? {Ed001's Note - what if Villa can't get a replacement in?}

12 Jul 2011 22:18:43
Agger could be a top, top, world class defender if he could remain injury free.
His only downfall is his proneness to injury. Has masses of potential, but what good is it if you're never fit to play? It's a shame really, he really could be a phenomenal defender.

12 Jul 2011 22:49:23
looking at ynwa being blasted out the kop on youtube.i dont care who we sign just please kenny get us in the top four again and let us sing it like we used too on a big European night {Ed027's Note -

Centre Midfielders :

Why does everybody want Aquilani to stay at Liverpool, yes he is an exellent player when fit but he simply doesn't want to be here. The most important thing is players wanting to play for the club.

"We've got a challenge to ourselves as well. We're only concerning ourselves with what we do.

What we do is going to get us a lot further than if we start worrying about everyone else that we'll play against."

A quote from Kenny Dalglish, maybe more people should stop worrying what the likes of Chelsea, Man U and City are doing and just concentrate on supporting Liverpool.

No mate it wasn't common knowledge it was logical being that he was the prem's only half decent winger we could realistically buy. Its not rocket science its calculated guessing, nothing more.

Cheers

Akh666 {Ed001's Note - so why did he not say N'Zogbia who everyone else was claiming as the target?}

-------------------------------------------------------------

Akh666,

You are joking right mate?

Also you are right about Young, we did not sign but do you believe now we tried or was that just guess work?

I was wrong about Benzema as well, i can tell you we where very very close in Jan to signing him....

Can you tell me then mate who we will look to sign in January, really could do with the heads up

Cheers

After months of identifying the players required would it not be best just to go and buy them as soon as. We have known for ages who all the deadwood players are and I understand that some or if not all have to be moved on ideally before we bring in new players to balance the books. Maybe the problem is that some of the deadwood feel that while ever there on a fat pay packet and no new players are seen coming in that there is no need to move on, that there's a chance they will be bit part players.

Hate to say it but we ought to take a leaf out of the scum and do as they do, identify players, make a bid, then buy the players, Jones, Young, De Gea, then ship out deadwood O'Shea, Wes Brown. This way the deadwood no that there's not a chance of being part of the new season ahead.

I am happy with Henderson and Adam, but our squad of players is not as strong as the scums, Comoli for me needs to start doing what he's been paid to do, he's had long enough. Stop making rediculously low offers for players, make sensible offers and get value for money.

We all know as fans the positions we need to fill, it's not that hard, it's doing my head in. Get the players in now let the team start playing together, build an understanding and move forward together.

A fed up Red, sick of a waiting for the new season.

Rumours that Teteh Bangura is set to stay whole year out at AIK. But if Liverpool really want him then nothing should stand in their way.. But i don t really seeing none of the banguras fitting in the squad of Liverpool . I personal write the banguras of because aik really want them to stay and they are not ready for the premiership. best regards fr sweden.

It was never common knowledge in Jan when i first mentioned it..

Funnily enough do you know why it is common knowledge now, because that is who they want to sign..

Should not take a genius to work that out...

I can start making names up and that would not be common knowledge, do you know why? Because they would not be trying to sign them..

To the fella asking about Loic Remy, there was interest last july as i remember, however he was diagnosed with a heart defect and our interest cooled, he signed for marseille, underwent surgery and is good now.

Ed's- do you think Insua has any chance of being our first-choice left back next season? Or johnson there with kelly at right back?

Cheers- LFC4LYFE... {Ed001's Note - the plan is to sign one.}

12 Jul 2011 21:02:45
ed if we increase capacity of anfield to 60000 or if the new stadium capacity which 1 would generate the most revenue?? {Ed001's Note - that depends on the size of the new stadium, it should be a higher revenue for the same capacity on a new build. Mostly because they can build in more high value areas, ie VIP boxes.}

As for news, the only things I have new pertain to Downing just waiting on Villa signing a replacement, they want N'Zogbia but he wants over 80k a week and they won't give him that.}

Just my own musings but I feel I need to offer a balance to some of the 'Downing is average' and 'Carroll is overpriced' and 'KK should sign x, y, z...' nonsense I am reading on here. In my humble opinion, we have signed a striker in Carroll who everyone described as 'terrorising defences' when at Newcastle. We are chasing Aston villas player of the year, who was player of the year because of how he crosses a ball. Throw in a CM who can ping a ball forty yards onto a sixpence and is a deadball specialist, Suarez, who in the short time he has been with us has proved he has (IMO) the potential to be better at what he does than anything the other PL teams have/are linked with, and in KK, someone who lives and breathes LFC and dragged a sick club from the brink of monumental S**t to a respectable finish, but more importantly, gave back passion, purpose and pride, leaves me thinking that we just might be on to something.
So to all the KK and DC doubters - theyre running our club, not you. And I for one am glad.

Ed,

The more i think about the more I have great hope for the coming season. it may not be ours but it is going to be a lot more enjoyable to watch. If we sign Downing (or similar) and he can ping it onto the head of the big guy I am sure he will be close to the top of the goal scoring charts.

Suarez is just Suarez. A full season will be wonderful to watch. The midfield is now stronger with Henderson and Adam. Adam I am particularly happy with. We have missed a good passer in the midfield since Xabi left. But I think that Adam will bring more than what he did. Xabi had the best awareness of space and time of any player I have seen in a red shirt. As a player that dictated tempo of a game there is nobody in England like him. AThe only problem was that he was offensive enough. He did not score enough, he could not beat a man and he did not provide enough Killer balls. Adam on the other hand is not nearly as good at dictating tempo but he is a far more offensive central midfielder who gets into the box. He takes more risk than Xabi which in itself can be good and bad. In this case I think it is beneficial for Liverpool because at times our possession become predictable and when we play against teams with ten players behind the ball we need to take more risk.

But more than anything I think our opponents are weaker than they were.

The Spam have bought Jones, Young and De Gea. jones was only bought this year because we showed interest. Young is any better than Valencia and Nani? Don't think so. degea - have watched him in Spain a lot and I have really not been impressed. he is a good shot stopper, but not a very good communicator. plus he is not particularly physical so not sure he will be able to dominate his area. The spam have also lost a lot of experience Brown, O'Shea and Scholes plus Giggs will not play the same amount. they have weakened on their fullbacks and if Ferdinand and Vidic are out then it is young boys or Evans to take over. they are still bereft in thendefensive midfield position.

Finally, I really want them to buy Sneijder. he is a great player but where are they planning to play him? In a 4-4-2 formation and in the centre of midfield he is a player that does not defend. United do not have Roy Keane or Scholes to do the covering. In a 4-3-3, United player wingers not forwards so Sneijder would be expected to get into the box like Stevie did when behind Torres and that is not Sneijder game. same is the problem in a 4-5-1. Therefore can see the United team being unbalanced by his arrival which would mean worse results.

Chelsea - no Essien, a method of playing that does not suit Torres, an ageing team particularly Lampard who cannot be expected to provide his 20 goals a season. luiz looks a player but also one that will give his own sides a few problems. It will be interesting to see if Terry will be shown up without players that I thought actually held the defense together, Alex and Ricardo Carvalho.

Manchester City will lose Tevez. What I have seen of Aguero and have seen a lot I am not convinced he is suitable for English football. He is lazy and I can see that getting on the nerves of the other highly paid players. If not Aguero then Dzeko just does not appear to be at the races and Man city do not appear to want to play to his strengths in the air (johnson not played) .they will buy a load of players but not sure Mancini has the ability ot keep them all happy.

Arsenal seem to be imploding. If both fabregas and nasri gothen they willbe looking like a sinking team. What superstarswillwant to join. Plus Wenger just not want to strengthen where everybody says they need to.

Spurs have had the Sneijder problem with Van der Vaart. great player but rewally unbalanced the team. When you have e paceoflennon and Bale youneed to getbodiesinthe box and the problem wasSpursonly played one forward which meant the crossing needed to be spot on, something Bale and Lennon are not renowned for. With VdV not getting into the box and a central midfield that sat deep it was virtually impossible for the lone forward to score. Next season VdV will continue and no matter who Spurs buy without people getting in the box it is dificult to score.

Well I think next year will be a greatchance to bring in some silverware.

do liverpool really need to sign a forward.young adam morgan scored 20 goals for the u-18s and reserves last season drawing mark wright former lpool defender to conpair him to a young robbie fowler.what i have seen of him he looks good i dont think we need anyone else he could come into the first team squad.hes only 17 odd but he looks quite strong in his build.and has a real eye for goal.i think kk could well promote him this summer.he looks to me like he could get a few games this season at least lfc

keep hearing that we are signing all these players , Downing and Doni yes then if some players sold or released a left back will come and maybe a RW but no striker this transfer windowand dont think there will be a marquee signing of mata FSG are not the type to just throw money around its a slow and steady rebuild of the squad what do you think eds {Ed001's Note - they know they have to initially splurge to get things on the right track, that was built into their initial projections. Paul Tomkins did an excellent article regarding the plans on his website.}

Mereiles was asked by a reported on our tour if he will be at Anfield next season and he said "of course"

That means we will probably have to say goodbey to Aquilani. Prefer Mereiles anyways

I personally don't mind us signing downing BUT only if we then sign either a CREATIVE winger or a good solid YOUNG striker as back up. I have read plenty of rumours about wingers eds so I just want to know who liverpool mightbe looking at for striker? I think Roux from Brest sounds alright but I would prefer someone like goodwillie. what you think? Cheers {Ed001's Note - seriously? Goodwillie is a drunken thug, he makes Carroll seem like a stay at home teetotaller.}

i for one hope aqua stays i would love to see a fully fit aqua play, but with so many cm at the club i no we have to move some on, also i think we dont really need mata he is not your typical wide man he loves to cut inside so we would be left with the same situation we got now so i really hope we get downing he would fit in so well, and i 100% believe when the window shuts that we would of made the tranfer of the season in adam, for the price we payed its gonna be a bargain and really looking forward to seeing him in red

Hey Ed, just seen moussa sissoko come out saying hes flattered to be linked with us and city. People understandably moaning about another potential CM coming in but he'd give lucas competition for the DM spot and would be better imo. Do you feel if there is any approach, it would be after the priorities of downing, a left back and centre back are tied up, as well as getting rid of the likes of aqua?

Cheers
Amz {Ed001's Note - yes, priority positions first then strengthening the squad.}

All this "why are we paying £18.5M for Stewart Downing when Man. Utd paid £16M for Ashley Young" talk is annoying me so much.

Stewart Downing is the better player of the two and also has 2 years left on his contract, I believe. Young had 1 left. Simple.

I am a little worried about the Downing situation.
It is to be understood, or at least assumed, that the deals completion is hinged on Aston Villas purchase of a like player, to fill the void left by Downing.
As far as I'm aware, this player is to be Charles N'zogbia, who incidentally has a quite ridiculous 20 million price tag.
There is no way Villa will pay anywhere NEAR that valuation for a player less talented than the one they are selling, and for less.
So Eds, if you have an insight, where does this leave the deal?
Are there other players Villa have targeted, who are more likely to be making the move to birmingham?

On a side note, Harry Redknapp and Dave Whealans valuations of their own players is fecking batty Modric and Adam are the same age, play in similar positions, and while Adam is not as technically gifted with the ball at his feet, both his passing ability and scoring record arguably superior 27 million plus for Modric, 9 million for Adam. Figure that one out.

The Insane {Ed001's Note - the problem is purely N'Zogbia's wage demands, they are in excess of 80k a week.}

12 Jul 2011 19:22:27
Just my opinion but I see us playing 352 or 433 next season. These formations are more conductive to passing game and utilise the best areas of the pitch.

442 is an outdated system and far too direct and predictable, few teams play this formation anymore due to its predictability, england use it and often underperform as any opposition know that the ball will be pushed wide in order to cross in for a target man.

In contrast all the most successfull teams of recent years play 433 or a variant of 352, ie brazil 433, holland 433, barca 433, inter (under mourinho) 433/352. Its less predictable and very conductive to fluid fast football. People say we need wingers for carroll but he's got a rocket left foot and just needs to work on his accuracy.

Also 433 usually keeps ball to feet and its far easier to retain possession with ball at your feet.

I expect us to line up with 433 this season suarez, carroll, kuyt with mid being lucas, adam, gerrard. Wing backs will push forward to support attacks and lucas and gerrard will play deeper to cover if possession is lost.

Sorry for the long post but as a professional assistant manager I have good knowledge of these things. Currently unemployed but did coach at atletico in 96 and assisted in italy recently.

The tactician {Ed001's Note - you clearly don't understand tactics if you think a 4-4-2 means the ball has to be played wide then crossed in. Did you never see Liverpool under Dalglish the first time round? Or Arsenal under Wenger winning league trophies until they changed from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 variant. The formation is irrelevant, it should be just the one that best suits the tactics you want to play and players you have, nothing more.}

12 Jul 2011 18:35:38
{Ed009's Note - I really can't be making a habit of this, it just isn't viable, so please don't ask again - and don't expect any other editors to be as willing, they actually have stuff to do with their time. I'll give it a shot though:

we are almost certain to sign Downing. I believe a bid in the region of 18.5 million has been accepted.

Hai ed, So was a bid accepted by villa or is it very likely to be accepted? But price is little high. THANKS {Ed001's Note - it is more like the Torres situation in January, Villa want a replacement but when they get one it is job done.}

it seems to me john henry is so concerned about the sell on policy i don't know why we don't buy young players from Europe and south America because the clubs who seem to buy players from us are normally Spanish clubs and i dont think they tend to buy English/British players.

I was in my local David Lloyds gym, when I was just putting the red 25kg plate on either side of the bench press bar when it slipped out my hands and rolled away. I followed it is it weaved in and out of the treadmills. Totally oblivious to where I was going, I soon noticed I was in unfamiliar territory. I was in a dark room. I saw 3 shady figres in the back of the room. As I cautiosly walked over, I noticed that it was KK, DC & Sergio Aguero I dolphin dived accross the room and under a nearby chair where I overheard their conversation. Apparently he will be joining on a 5 year deal. To be announced in 1 week.
Eds, I dont post sh*t or made up stories. So please post this in rumours, thanks.

Everyone wanting mata, aguero, cissoko etc can forget it.

Comolloi said that british players are there prefered choice and there is plenty of them on the market so don't hold your breath on the foreign players.

For me, i just look at how good the likes of Reina and suarez are, not to mention our beloved Alonso, so i would like a mata or an aguero, but kenny wants an 80's feel to the squad going back to basics.

This may work but then again football has evolved since then... lets just hope he proves me wrong.

Remember: Carroll = £35 = Aguero

Who would you prefer?

This isn't ripping you Ed002, but your like Scott Tennerman, a charmer mate, it mostly works all the time, mostly. But your info is always bang on always so big respect for that Ed002, you broke the Adam story at least 3 if not 4 hours before sly sports did, but so did the Alpha Ed001. Liverpool's 1. prioity must be a left winger. 2. must be a left back. 3. prioity must definitely be a CB, because Agger is always injuried, the greek is too bad, Carra too old, Kelly and Flanagan are too young. So we only have Skrtel now. 4. prioity must be a back up attacker. Do you agree? {Ed009's Note - I'd put another winger above a back up striker.}

--------------------------------

We need 3 wingers, i am fed up of liverpool signing the minimum players for positions, we have players who can play out wide but we need the competition and the depth if we are to challenge, last season we had 10 first team players at best players thought they were untouchable and got comfortable and we were poor

12 Jul 2011 16:23:47
Downing will sign this week it's good to see finally fans have agreed with Kenny and accept him, Kenny will sign British players mainly for a reason.
Expect David Goodwillie as a 3rd striker again young and British may be about 6m, Left back may still be Wayne Bridge despite his age all depends on his wages Kenny wants best available British left back.
Expect Dann or even Shawcross
If both Merieles and Aqua goes we will be going Rodwell, and also heard Kenny is planning to spent up to 15m on Stephan Ireland

--------------------------

David goodwillie would only cost around 2 million I am from dundee and a liverpool and dundee utd fan he would b a great back up striker but I reckon he is off to either rangers maybe cardiff showed an interest as well as alex mcliesh while at birmingham but I reckon he may go to a championship side with promotion hopes so if they go up he will get to start games in epl thanx

All of you wishing for african and south american players like Eto's and aguero's, has it ever dawned on you that international competions and friendlies etc do not coincide with the european calender. That would mean liverpool would be without those players during every african nations cup or copa whatever etc...I'm sure kenny is aware of that and is willing to put up with suarez. But having many players leaving would upset the team.
So expect kenny to keep it local so he can get the same team playing together consistently so they can gel.

Akh666 i totally agree with you over Macca. Like you say he comes out with it when its 98% done, i want a 2% escape clause. Just waiting for Benzema and Young to follow him through the door and i will join the Macca's got great intuition and educated guesses but for being ITK forget about it. Oh no Youngs gone to Scum i forgot he must of escaped through his Macca's 1% escape clause. Karim, where are you?Macca said you were not just coming but nailed on. I've been waiting at JLA for your easy jet plane to land since July first and i'm getting hungry.Cant belive Macca has come out today to say downing's signing.Anybody else the reply's would be on s**t sherlock etc, but just Akh 666 had the balls so say he thought he's states the obvious. {Ed009's Note - he may stay if he lowers his wage demands. Unfortunately at this time he is asking for more money when he is already on double what Adam is. If he sticks with his hard line then he will probably go. We are now in a position to negotiate.}

Downing will be the only winger bought this summer.
Doni, baines will be the other players signed
Gerrard will be the starting RW next season.
Merielles will stay and will add to the midfield cover with henderson and maxi.
LB would be the biggest signing.
LFC would leave targeting another CB and Winger for the next transfer windows, most probably next summer.

There are times in our lives that we cling on to the past or something that is very dear to us when we know it is time we let go or change to have clearer vision of a brighter future/outcome but we are too afraid to make that needed change. We feel attached to our past because it holds to many memories (rich history); it hinders our progress as an individual or group of people. We all know that Change is inevitable and it is the only constant thing life; what we do as individual or group of people is a function of changes around us. I say lets march on to a new bigger, better, well-equipped modern stadium, one we can HOME and write another glorious chapter in the existence of LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB. YNWA

Sky Sports News just ran a brief story entitled, "Meireles Pledges To Stay".
I was quite happy, as I think he is a wonderful player to have in our squad, and if he wants to stay all the better.
I also expected to read his so called 'pledge', but was perturbed to read the extent of his dialogue in the matter, when asked whether he would be a liverpool player in the coming season, was.......
"of course".
How this can be descriped as "Insistent" or a "Pledge" is beyond me.
I honestly dont mind either way, but this is a prime example of SSN highly over-exagerating minute soundbites.

With us signing downing, anyone else think there is still a huge gap on the left side of the pitch? Ed what about christian ansaldi? He's strong, tough tackler which suits pl, two footed and 24 so ticks all the boxes for our left back. And do you think we have an 18.5mil bid accepted for downing? Just i haven't heard. Thanks. Check this site everyday now lol {Ed009's Note - Ansaldi is a good player but I'm afraid I know of no interest at this time. I think the Downing deal will be completed soon.}

12 Jul 2011 14:08:07
Hi Ed,
I was just wandering how many wingers we would sign apart from Downing because although Henderson has a great cross and engine he does lack pace for a right midfielder.
Thanks Raj {Ed009's Note - there is a chance of another one, our pursuit of Bastos (who I assume was for the wing) highlights this.}

12 Jul 2011 14:03:43
Liverpool's 1. prioity must be a left winger. 2. must be a left back. 3. prioity must definitely be a CB, because Agger is always injuried, the greek is too bad, Carra too old, Kelly and Flanagan are too young. So we only have Skrtel now. 4. prioity must be a back up attacker. Do you agree? {Ed009's Note - I'd put another winger above a back up striker.}

12 Jul 2011 14:00:56
What the heck is the fuss about Lavezzi? We seen him twice against us this year, and in the two matches he lasted about 30 mins before he was busted. He's carrying far too much weight..if he could do what he does well for 60 or 70 mins, excellent, but until he does, he's just a poor man's Tevez {Ed009's Note - he did score against us...}

12 Jul 2011 13:57:10
does the singings of adam and henderson prove the rumours of gerrard's injury being worse than we are being told? edd's can you give any news on this? {Ed009's Note - rumours, that is all. More likely they tell of Aquilani and Meireles' departure.}

12 Jul 2011 13:35:57
how do you eds rate skrtel and agger ? from what iv seen on here with peoples teams that they make, 95% of the people dont put agger or skrtel as cb with carra

just wondering how you rate both of them ? {Ed009's Note - Agger is a very good player. I imagine he is absent from teams because, quite simply, he is largely absent from the team. If he can have an injury free season he can be one of the best. Conversely Skrtel is prone to mistakes and is hot headed. He is not a bad player but should probably not be first choice.}

12 Jul 2011 13:27:14
Please put on rumours page){Ed002's Note - It could well be Liverpool. I would think one club nterested is Spurs. Inter have shown long-term interest as well. he moves it will likely be to Inter.}

My madrid source tells me the english club interested in banega is arsenal, as a possible replacement for fabregas. Dont know if that's accurate or not though, he's spot on with all my madrid info.

City have agreed a £400m sponsorship deal with none other than themselves lol

In what looks like a cynical way to circumvent the financial fair play rules, City's owners have sponsored the club via their own businesses.

At 400m, the deal is so ridiculously generous there isn't a chance they'll get a fraction of the value of their 'investment', as genuine sponsors such as Standard Chartered will, for example.

So anyone hoping that the spending spree was going to end can think again, sadly. And the idea of fair play is totally out of the window, as UEFA always new it would be.

Heard from a good source that Michael Owen could be on his way back to anfield.
KK sees him as a good 3rd choice striker and United are willing to let him go for a small fee.
Would we welcome him back?

Ed, if you don't mind could you post the squad for the Asia tour again because I can't find it. Cheers {Ed009's Note - Gulacsi, Jones, Hansen, Kyrgiakos, Kelly, Ayala, Carra, Flano, Robinson, Wilson, Wisdom, Agger, Skrtel (as far as I know), Adam, Meireles, Shelvey, Spearing, Coady, Poulsen, Cole, Maxi, Pacheco, Aquilani, Ngog, Kuyt and Carroll.}

Ed, whilst signing Downing would represent a hefty fee. The way the market is means that signing quality proven premiership players who are British requires hefty transfer fees. If we sign Downing we need to put the fee into context. Man U paid 17m for Young with only a year left on his contract. Whilst Young and Downing both have different qualities, Downing is in my view the better value for money signing. He is the more consistent performer of the two hence his Villa player of the year award last season. He is also the more adaptable of the two as he can effectively switch wings as well as play up front. The only area where Young beat Downing is in his pace (though Downing is not short of pace). It is clear that in bidding for Downing FSG are showing their commitment to improving the squad. If Villa don't play ball we at least know that FSG are committed to making further money available to KK to continue to strengthen areas of weaknesses in our squad. Happy days. News in from the Far East - when Raul Meireles asked if he will be at Anfield next season replied - yes of course. Great news which means competition for places.

Just want to voice my opinion and see if people agree or not.
I'm really optimistic about the coming season. The way things are going I truly believe that, although we may not have the best squad, we will be the most improved squad in the league.
All the spam have done is spent 50-60m and replaced Van Der Sar and Giggs (who is as good as finished) with De Gea and Young. Neither are better than who they fielded last season (Nani and Valencia). Jones is no more than back up for Ferdinand and Vidic and perhaps one for the future. Now they are looking to spend 35m on Schneijder who will be no more than a replacement for Scholes. So they have to spend to stand still.
Arsenal, whoever they buy, will still have probably lost their 2 best players from last season and will struggle to replace them. Even if they stay they will have 2 players who don't want to be there. I'm sure the whole squads morale will be disrupted either way.
What about Citeh?-With the money that they've already spent in previous seasons I can't see how their squad can improve massively. They'll lose Tevez and, ok, may get Aguero. An improvement yes, but Aguero may take time to adjust. Is Clichy a massive improvement on what they already had? Don't think he is.
Tottenham are struggling. They will struggle to keep their best player, which will again cause unrest in the squad. The players will get a feeling of lack of ambition and will struggle to see how they will be no more than part of the chasing pack. And they don't seem to be in the market for anyone as yet. I get the feeling that their mini empire they thought they were building is crumbling.
Chelsea - again they've spent big for many seasons and any signings they make will only be small improvements on what they already have.
Liverpool on the other hand, having not had huge amounts of money in previous seasons, will not only improve our first 11 but the whole squad. With Henderson and Adam already here, and Downing likely, we have 3 of the highest assist makers from last season, and probably the best players from their relative clubs. We will no doubt improve in the left back position. Carroll will be like a new signing when he's fully fit, especially if we have a wide man or 2, as will Gerrard, and a lot of the young lads are coming of age, so when you look at the team we were turning out at the back end of last season, and still getting results, and compare that to who will be lining up against Sunderland, it's exciting how much better we will be. I'd be interested in anyones thoughts. Eds included

Ed, why are you putting the replies on a seperate page? it was much better before, i don't want to have to goto an extra page to see the replies then have to start all over again, i appreciate it helps get the hits up, but i want to see everything in front of me, it's what makes the site so effective. Danny {Ed002's Note - It is a constantly improving process.}

12 Jul 2011 12:47:38
{Ed002's Note - Chelsea have been interested in Bastos previously and he has certainly been considered as a like-for-like replacement for Zhirkov who after much injury is due to leave. I suspect Spurs may have expressed an interest in the player but it is hard to see where he would fit in to the team at anything other than left back. The only thing holding up a move to Juve was an acceptable bid not being made. I think Clicy's move was critical to opening the window for a bid to be made for Baines - and I think he would be an excellent solution. However, I fear that the money Everton would want could be prohibitive. As I said earlier, I rather think Roma have moved in to pole position over Cissokho and I understand that a bid will be made anytime now.}

---------------------------------------------------

y wud roma want cissohko wen they just spent £15m euros on angel who is a LB?

{Ed002's Note - And how many left backs do Liverpool have? Manchester United have Evra/Fabio; Chelsea have Cole/Zhirkov/Van Aanholt; Arsenal had Clichy/Gibbs.}

There is no chance the first 4 of those are going to happen, and vargas and mata appear unlikely.

Pepe Reina to Arsenal
Nasri to Liverpool

Gerrard to Real
Higuain to Liverpool

Then two of Vargas, Downing, Mata with Cissohko at left back.

{Ed002's Note - I can't explain why it was put where it was. But I figured as soon as I saw the Reina/Nasri exchange that there was something wrong. Nasri is way too short to play in goal.}

Hi Ed, I think we've bought players so far who are home game players and not necessarily as good away from home. Bigger name players play well regardless of the atmosphere but from what I recall, Downing and Henderson aren't great away from Villa Park and Stadium of Light respectively. Charlie Adam had an impact at Old Trafford for Blackpool but we need to buy big to win the harder games away from home. What's your view? Cheers.

Re the Sun boycott discussion- it's worth remembering that Kelvin McKenzie, who was editor of The Sun at the time they published those awful headlines after Hillsborough, is now a columnist at the Daily Mail.

I think people should remember that McKenzie has never fully and openly apologised for those Sun headlines, and that he personally was the real villain in that affair, and has remained so due to his refusal to properly apologise.

I think people should consider whether to boycott anything to do with the Mail as a gesture of their feelings towards McKenzie- including websites and sponsored events.

The question is- should the guilt for those abusive headlines now follow the man who was in charge and published them, or stay with the Sun newspaper itself?

Hi eds.

Who do you think is most likely to fill the LB spot - Enrique, Cissokho or Baines? {Ed002's Note - It would be guess work right now - and Kolarov, Izaguirre, Bridge et al. For me Baines would be the best option for Liverpool.}

12 Jul 2011 10:52:00
I am sure we will be working on numerous targets at the same time but is it likely that any serious progress on lb, cb and possibly a striker will only materialise once the lw transfer has been resolved? Would it be right to assume that funding will primarily be set aside for priority targets and then any remaining budget will be worked out on the positions of less importance. If this were to be the case could it be likely we would see a larger budget for lb then cb and finally a smaller fee paid out for a young striker for example. I know outgoings would also have a bearing on this as well.

Cheers

Billy Bragg sings about The Sun

Roy Greenslade Monday 11 July 2011
guardian.co.uk

Now that the News of the World has gone... Billy Bragg turns his attention to its daily sister with a catchy number, Never buy The Sun.

The refrain suggests that the title should really be "The Scousers never buy The Sun" (a reference to the boycott that followed the paper's notorious coverage of the Hillsborough football tragedy in 1989).

It has attracted lots of supportive comments - and no objections. Expect this to be up on YouTube very soon.

Why are there still some idiots who are saying Maxi will go?

You clearly don't give a player the number 11 shirt, from number 17, only to sell him a few weeks later.

i have come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be that bad signing downing but only if we get an attacking lb, like cissokho, drenthe or marcelo. if we were ready to pay 20m for a rb and have payed 18m for one in johnson than why wouldn't we be willing to pay 20m euros for marcelo.

To everyone saying we have too many players for cm for next season the players we have at the moment are
Steven Gerrard - quite injury prone though surgery may have fixed it
Raul Meireles - for sale if the right offer comes in
Alberto Aquilani - must likely won't be here next season
Jordan Henderson - most likely to be played on the right
Lucas - our best player these last two seasons
Charlie Adam - New signing great addition to the squad
Jay Spearing - May go out on loan Christian Poulsen - will be sold
Jonjo Shelvey - may go out on loan
This leaves us with Gerrard, Adam, Lucas and Henderson in mid and with Henderson playing on the right I would keep Spearing in the squad and sign another cm. Ed, do you think we will sign another cm {Ed009's Note - we are looking at others, which surprises me, but we will only see one signed once we have secured all our other targets, if at all.}

think it might be if aqua goes or poulsen another holding mid or dm like gago?

It's that time of the year again. Yes, the mixed pleasures of the summer transfer window are upon us once more, and unless you have booked a very long vacation under a rather large stone formation, the following months will present you with a plethora of stories along the lines of 'Media A reports agent B has hinted X about club C on behalf of player D' (variations do occur, but this is the basic pattern). It's timeless, it's classic, and like all successful narratives it is repeated over and over again with a different cast of actors playing the archetypal roles.
Though you could argue that some of these stories are endowed with their own bizzarre brand of beauty, especially if they are either excessively elaborate or blatantly untrue, I must admit I have a weakness for those who have at least some connection with reality.
To that end, I make use of a few heuristics when assessing transfer stories. They are by no means definitive, but they do tend to limit the field of stories to take seriously rather a lot. As ever, my vantage point is the Serie A, but these guidelines should be useful on a global scale:
Initial reservations
The first thing you need to do when you encounter a transfer rumour is to check which paper/site it originates from. If this is not goal.com, you may cautiously proceed to the next step, which is to asses the source that is cited. If there is no source or the source is 'transfer expert NN', 'whispers around the club' or 'a general belief', bin it right there and then, without mercy.
If a 'proper' source is in fact quoted, it is very often a player's agent or the dS of a club (or, even more likely, Maurizio Zamparini but let's not over complicate things). These quotes might be of interest, as an actual person is involved and in some sense is putting his (or her) credibility on the line.
However, as credibility is not a trait traditionally rated very highly by neither agents nor sporting directors, the odds are very much in favour of these 'sources' simply doing what they usually do. This generally has precious little to do with providing readers with facts and a lot to do with talking up the value of a player (Agent) or pleasing fans and/or setting up smoke screens (dS).
The source of the article is in some (rare) instances the player himself. But although he is in most cases more trustworthy than the above, you should bear in mind that the player normally has no interest whatever in harming his standing with his current employer, nor in limiting his future options, and will consequently just say whatever he feels pleases the most people the most. Add to that the fact that footballers by and large are not very bright and there's still plenty of room for skepticism.
Sources, in other words, rarely offer any certainty as to the validity of their claims, even in the cases where these claims actually correspond with those of the article. So basically you're left with your gut feeling at this pivotal stage. Here, the only rule that applies is that an estimated 89 per cent of the remaining stories are utter BS (in some cases, e.g TuttoSport, the BS percentage is known to have been as high as 98, 4). Not much help in that, I'm afraid, but further reason to be wary.
Questions to be asked
When for some reason you decide to go along with a story, there are a couple of further points to be addressed before you pin your hopes or fears on it:
1) Do you believe it primarily because you wish for it to be true or because you are by nature a pessimist and such a move would be 'typical'?
- Although objectivity is an impossibility, both of these are unsound reasons, really the former more so than the latter and should ignite the spark of doubt anew.
2) Is it possible that this rumour has been planted in order to affect a third (or fourth, or fifth etc.) party?
- Both agents and clubs do this a lot. Ask yourself if this could be the case here. But beware Unless the 'hidden agenda' is fairly obvious/likely, speculation along those lines may result in conspiracy theories that are much more complex than the story itself not a good sign.
3) Does the move in question make sense at all for the player and the clubs involved? From an economic and a tactical perspective?
- This is admittedly a tricky one, as many clubs in the past have splashed out enormous amounts of money for players clearly unsuited for them, just as footballers have been known to make odd choices now and again (cf. above on the cognitive abilities of said players). However, if the above boxes are all ticked, the probability of the transfer materializing rises dramatically.
Conclusion/Disclaimer
Now, if a transfer story has made it relatively unscathed through both the reservations and the questions above, there is a possibility it might have some truth to it
However, just as not all transfer moves necessarily make sense (like we discussed above), some deals that seem a perfect fit for all can be affected or even ruined by rather simple outside factors (such as a WAG preferring to live in a city where garbage is actually removed from the street rather than left there to rot, or Maurizio Zamparini having a bad sandwich), which only goes to show that you should never believe a transfer story until it is wholly official.
But then again, if we were to be so anal about every rumour, what would we be doing all summer?
Enjoy the mercato (which ever way you please)

dmedly

Just a few points on the stadium.

It is no secret that we are struggling to find a solution to the stadium dilemma. We cant just build the stands higher and block sunlight from peoples houses.

My only problem is that you cant just build a Kop, a Kop is made over history. If we were to build a new stadium then we may aswell kiss our history goodbye. I read an article from the Echo this morning and it was quoted as saying 'it could take up to 3 years for all the obsticals to be moved'. Now for me I dont care how long it takes aslong as we stay at anfield.

as for left back, just wondering if agger may be seen as first choice and were not really bothering? Fit... I think he could be really promising there so why bother spending over 10 mil for someone?

morning eds, if we sign downing do u think we will sign a right winger like adam johnson aswell?/ {Ed009's Note - it is certainly a possibility, our pursuit of Bastos (who I assume wasn't for left back) highlights that. But it isn't an emergency as I believe we could see Henderson play there most of the time.}

THANKS MSE (SA) {Ed009's Note - I'm afraid you'll need to elaborate more than that. Paraguay have no big name wingers, so I can't think who you mean right now. Santos is 28, so past his prime, and you have to consider why no big team has gone in for him in this long.}

KK is doing what he did in 1985 . strengthen the midfield to dominate games .1985 one of his 1st signings - macmahon

my wish :

out : lucas, poulsen , cole ,

midfielders : gerrard, adam , henderson , spearing , Barton . meireles
may will be surprise about barton , but he will add steel in the midfield.

teams that dominate midfield will dominate games and teams that dominates games wins most of the time

Cheers

Hi, this is my first time posting on here. Think it's very unlikely that we will sign anyone else until kk and dc gets back from china. Mereiles did go with the squad according to the echo, so why people come on here saying that he's leaving because he's been left back at melwood is a mystery. Fancy downing to sign next week when they are home and then probably 1 of baines or Enrique. Keep the faith reds. We are on the way back.

Awesome info eds A query on the prospects of selling some of our forgotten squad: Any info on interested parties for Degen, El Zhar, Insua, or Poulsen? Hope we clear some room in the wage bill soon. Looks like Jova could be Belgium-bound shortly. {Ed009's Note - I believe there are a few clubs interested in Insua, including still Gala. Conversely, none of the others are attracting much interest at the moment and the club may make a hard decision to release them from their contract, with a hefty settlement.}

I think we should play Johnson right mid next season, look what tottenham did with bale, I think he can be that good, great speed and beat a man and put a good ball in, Anyone agree?

Totally agree, but in saying that, he could still do all that from RB, like Dani Alves, either way works for me.

eds im a lm a very long time reader. and i love the work u boys are doing. I would like to say I'm very disappointed with the urgency of people concerning transfers.. in my opinion the lads do the job there payed to do. if come september and maby jan 2012 tis not working out, so b it. but in fairness tis great to see lfc playing lfc football once more

Ed002, we get say we get Stew Downing and he gets injured. Then what. Back to square one re wingers. Having a better idea what goes on at the club then most, how are we gonna sort that out unless we buy another winger. Do you think Downing will be the only quality winger in this window.we need another like Mata or Vargas if we cant get Adam Jonson6 {Ed001's Note - we are interested in Vargas, Bastos and Mata, I am sure the club don't plan on just one coming in, though I think one is enough and would like to see Radio Raheem given a chance.}

Ed009 is an absolute legend whereas Ed002 would be if he supported a proper team, LFC. :) {Ed001's Note - I am sure both ladies will be delighted to hear that.}

so its looking like this then:
gk-doni
lb-cissokho or enrique
lw-downing
cm-adam done
cm-henderson done

then to sort out a cb possibly dann another winger and cm but only after possible sales of ngog, aqua, insua, meireles, poulsen, konchesky, el zhar who would bring in round bout 30m to use on these positions if needed.DORSET RED

With the imminent arrival of Downing, do you think we'll buy a RM too? I see Henderson, Kuyt & Gerrard filling that role.

Gav the RED {Ed009's Note - I think Kuyt is intended to be used as a striker next season. Gerrard could play there, because Kenny won't stand for any crap unlike Rafa did, but I think we could well see another winger if one becomes available - our pursuit of Bastos highlights that.}

I heard that the youth team coach at Sunderland fancied Henderson as a right winger. Thinks he could do a job there. Think this is where Kenny Dalglish will play him.
