Is t just me but Sakho makes me very nervous. I watched him play for France and still looked clumsy and error prone. Then he was dropped.

Prefer Dan or Martin and would get rid of Sakho but this will not happen till next season.

Believable9 Unbelievable23

I agree, but he is only 24. A good run of games should boost his confidence and i'm sure we will see the best of him next season.

Also, the good thing about bringing in Lovren is that he can play in both centre back positions. So, if Sakho doesn't perform Skrtel will come in and Lovren will shift to the left side.

I would hope we can bring in Rojo as well. He can play left back and Left centre back and will provide extra competition for Sakho.

Hilaroius ignorance. He wad not dropped at all, and didn't put a single foot wrong in the tournument. at 23 I truely believe Sakho will be one of the best Centre halfs in the world in a couple of seasons.

Agree12 Disagree1

He wasn't dropped, he was injured.

Agree10 Disagree0

You haven't got a clue mate! Sakho will be the best centre back we have had since Hyypia!

Agree9 Disagree2

You are entitled to your opinion. However, there are people who will tell you that Dan and Martin make them just as nervous.
But, Sakho was NOT dropped. He was injured and Deschamps hoped for him to be ready for the Germany game (which he played in).

Agree3 Disagree0

Finally lads I taught it was just me he is not the answer to our problems for sure

Agree0 Disagree3

He always looks clumsy but his quite good actually.

Agree4 Disagree0

{Ed008's Note - Everyone's allowed to voice their opinion, I believe Sakho will become a very good defender maybe even World Class if he works on a few parts of his game he's still young give him time..

You are completly right paulmondo

Agree3 Disagree0

He's committed, physically strong, quick, a good defender and just needs to work on his game. Be patient with the guy.

Hey Eds. Is there a prayer we would get Lukaku. Represents goals, work ethic and future value at just 21.
Thanks as always.

Believable1 Unbelievable17

{Ed007's Note - No.}

Also represents a high price and a history with Everton.

Agree8 Disagree1

Think he's gone off the boil. Origi took his place at the WC, so looks like he'd be a better signing

Agree1 Disagree6

Gone off the boil? Nonsense he's a talented kid. Not fussed if he played for Everton, Man U or Timbuktu(Beardsley played for Man U when he was younger so by that l. If he wanted to play for us and we signed him i'd be pleased to have the lad.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 21:02:24
On a completely different note would you leave lalanna out of our first game of the season? I just don't think playing him would be the best option I mean he absolutely loves Southampton and still don't think he'd be happy in his first game if he helped tear apart Southampton (hoping we do obviously).

I can't remember the name of the guy that went from city to United or the other way and scored went off crying? Not saying this would happen but Southampton has been his life and just think we should give him any other game as his first!

Believable1 Unbelievable13

Is this for real? He's a professional footballer.

Agree8 Disagree0

In that case it could potentially mean leaving out Lambert & Lovren (if we sign him) too although I understand why Lallana would probably be the most affected with Lambert not likely to be starting anyway.

Depending on who else we sign, i'd probably start him on the bench and let him on in the second half that way he won't have to walk down the tunnel next to his old team mates. Having said that, he's a top professional and this is just a part of the game which I think he would most likely deal with fine in the circumstances.

Agree0 Disagree6

I'd leave him out because we have better options

Agree0 Disagree8

Think players should be picked on merit, their form and what is best tactically against the upcoming opposition.

Lallana is a pro. We've had many players play against teams they support and play well, score winning goals.

Get your concern, but no need to worry

Agree0 Disagree4

Didnt Dennis law relegate man united with a little back heel?

Agree3 Disagree1

No we don't ken, get a grip, we didn't spend £ 27 million on one of the nomenees of the pfa to take his career backwards. he will be brilliant for us and certainly signed as a definite starter! and is nothing like coutinho because his best position for the Saints was a free role starting down the right or left hand side.

Agree2 Disagree1

I'm not saying I would do it or it would happen but he is a human being as well as a pro. if Southampton go out their with a poor side from all the sales and we trounce them 5 zip as much of a pro as he is it would be devastating for him to play such a part in his club's downfall.

I mean people are now tipping them for relegation! It's sad to watch from the outside but if we get loveren we will have benefited hugely

Agree0 Disagree2

Hey "Lambertiho" it's called an opinion and I'm perfectly entitled to it so less of the aggression, son.
In my opinion we have got better options than Lallana for the first team.
Did spending £35m on Andy Carroll guarantee him a first team place?
Transfer fee does not give any guarantees about selection. He may have impressed some people who pick dream teams at Southampton last season but that doesn't mean anything about next season in a completely different team.
He's too slow on the football pitch, physically and mentally. He'd flourish in Italy, but in England you don't get the same time on the ball.
It's my opinion, same as you have an opinion, so build a bridge and get over it.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - he has done alright the last few seasons, in lower leagues where you get less time on the ball he stood out, steps up to the Prem and stood out. Your point is ludicrous, it just suggests you have never watched him play, he is far from slow mentally on the pitch. You don't get the time and space in the Championship or League One to be slow mentally. That is why Teixeira struggled so badly down there, he wanted time on the ball. He was fine in the Prem, because he got plenty of that.}

Nonsense, go watch a full match of Southampton, I built thar bridge now you are welcome to use it. Just stop wrting off players before they kicked a ball, its pathetic and clueless. Andy Carroll? Now I won't even bother discussing f.all with you. What an absolutley unrelated bollox.

Agree1 Disagree0

I'm not a Southampton season ticket holder so I wouldn't say I've seen a lot of his play in the premier league.
I have watched him live twice when Saints were in the championship and 3 times since they were a premiership side.
I think it's only when watching a player live you can really appreciate their all round performance. TV just distorts your view as you don't see movement or work off the ball as much. These are 2 qualities you can only really judge live and they reflect speed of movement and speed of thought.

So to my knowledge I've watched him 5 times live. Not hugely representative but enough, I feel, to form an opinion.

Others who have been to more Southampton games, I bow to your superior knowledge. Unfortunately, TV watchers have a distorted picture.

I think we have a great Premiership ahead,
We are starting to make great gains to improve the squad
Chelski also improving
Arsenal will be tough with their acquisitions and more to come
Man U starting to buy and LVG hasn't even arrived yet
City have a great squad and as always will add to that so are always dangerous.
Spurs have gotten a fantastic new boss and I think he will get the best from that group of players also will buy a few to put his spin on the team.
Martinez will spend the little money he has wisely as he is a shrewd man.
PLUS . There's always a surprise team to throw the cat among the pigeons
Most exciting league in the world starts on August 16, can't wait.

Believable10 Unbelievable8

Agreed I think spurs and United will be very close to breaking into top for next season we need luck with injuries to keep progressing

Andre Wisdom will be sold - Ipswich and Derby seem favourites, a little gutted, thought this guy had a lot of potential.

People need to stop barking for a "suarez replacement" - u cannot replace a player like Suarez. Its time to build and strengthen from the back forward. We have no problems scoring goals nor lack creativity.

A little birdy tells me that we shall be purchasing a player in the region of 50m - Eds can you shed any light on any major targets as opposed to the fringe players we are continuously linked with?

Believable2 Unbelievable13

11 Jul 2014 22:19:10
Can't blame Suarez for wanting to play for Barça. Especially as a Spanish speaker. Owen, lineker, macmanaman, rush and souness all wanted similar( not forgetting Sammy lee at osasuna too).

Ayre and FSG have done well in negotiating the new contract in December to ensure that we get 75 million pounds for a player who will be 28 next time he kicks a ball in anger.

Keegan went and we got dalglish
Torres went and we got Suarez( and, ahem, Carroll)
Rush went and we got Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and houghton. ( not too dissimilar to lazer, llama, lambert and can).

Im pretty sure that when the rest start buying big there will be allot of complaining going on! I mean we are already strengthening and there is still complaining. I used to read 80% of the posts but now I just scroll down cause its all about how much, why didn't we etc etc! I trust Brendan! last year he wanted diego costa for x amount of money, people were complaining and we all saw what happened! same with mikhitarian, people were like who is this guy and when Dortmund got him it was like ian ayres fault! we can't buy and attract players like others do, YET, so we hane to be smart about it for now. Trust the team people and support the players! All the players!

Believable15 Unbelievable0

Well said my friend.I have and always will back the manager and squad no matter what.Yes like any other team we will but not very often get a player in that just doesn't perform look it happen's but I will always give that player every single chance and that's what we all should do.So let's ALL support and back BR and the squad from 1st to last game.

If Liverpool are looking for a Suarez replacement, would it likely be a player with champions league experience (Eg huntelaar) or someone like Suarez was before, relatively unknown but with potential to develop (world cup aside). And if so would that player be someone like markovic. I understand that this question is a bit opinionated, in terms of how 'well known' Suarez was at Ajax, but I mean a player who is not playing in a top European side, such as Barcelona. Thanks

Hi eds have Liverpool approached illegally for Bony by talking to his representatives? I thought any club can speak to any reps any time? As long as it's not the player himself?

Believable1 Unbelievable10

{Ed002's Note - A club can talk to his representatives of a player.}

Its a stupid article. The owner of Swansea said something along the lines of "I don't think Liverpool would do that" and the tabloids turned it into "Liverpool should be ashamed".

Does anyone else feel that there are several players in the first team that need upgrading for this upcoming season?

For me, they are:

Glen Johnson - We have all seen his lack of effort over the past couple of seasons. His positioning and decision making have been awful.

Martin Skrtel - He is a warrior who gives everything, but he can switch off and become careless. He would be a good option to have on the bench.

Simon Mignolet - I always feel nervous with him in goal, especially from set pieces. He doesn't command his area like a keeper should and his distribution is poor. He would be a good backup keeper, but as far as I am aware he is on pretty high wages.

My choice of replacements would be: Serge Aurier, Dejan Lovren and Asmir Begovic.

Believable5 Unbelievable8

11 Jul 2014 20:56:57
Johnson is being replaced by Flanagan, who has had a great season on his weaker side and is developing game by game. Mingolet had his first season with an inconsistent and shakey defense, and he is young. I back him to improve and become a great keeper for us, he has everything he needs just needs to bring it together (go back and watch De Gea's first season with United for a good example). Skrtel is a worry but I assume if we get Lovren he will start over Skrtel, so evidently it's an area being looked at

Agree13 Disagree0

Not sure changing 4 out of 5 players in our back line is the best recipe to sort things out. We've gone through the growing pains with Migs & Sakho and still finished 2nd. They'll both be better for the experience this season.

Agree10 Disagree0

I know what you mean there red rum but I think we initially wanted begovic but we didn't want to cough up the money.what about Mexicos keeper? He s on a free ain't he?or has he signed for someone.I think we will have options at right back this season, its a proper left back we need.Defo need a centre back tho, we will see I suppose

Agree0 Disagree8

Don't get that post Red, several players need upgrading but you only mention three?
So in your opinion only two to three players really need upgrading.
Bit harsh on Migs seeing he had a seriously poor defence in front of him, even Neuer would have been caught out behind those boys during the season.

Agree7 Disagree2

Id really like to see mclaughlin be given a chance for rb

Agree10 Disagree1

12 Jul 2014 11:07:19
Mignolet only needs to strengthen his distribution and aerial command and he will be an all round strong keeper. He has some of the best coaches in the world to help him develop at Liverpool and spends his International time training alongside Courtois who is a brilliant all round keeper. Mignolet will get there.
Flanagan will take over Right Back this season, or continue on the left if we don't manage to sign a new Left Back, either way we can all see that he will end up being our first choice RB. I agree Johnson should be moved on but other areas are more important and although he needs a kick up the backside he's still a fairly solid option, as opposed to others in the past (Josemi. ). Its been turbulent there since Finnan left.
In the middld I hope we play Lovren and Sakho. Two big strong dominant fellas. Sakho is a bit like Luiz in his lack of discipline or composure and charges out and goes to ground too easily, but similar to Mignolet in that he's young and can be taught these things. He was certainly much more disciplined in the French back line. The two of them are confident and assured on the ball so it works well with our current playing style.
We will sell Dagger. So we will the Skrtel on the bench who is a brilliant back up with experience of the league and our style. Kelly can hopefully rediscover his young promise from his deputising role with Illori and Ryan Mc also breaking in and covering CB RB. Could definately do with a LB although Sakho and Can have both played there.

For anyone worrying about Suarez leaving, by using Bale's sale as a comparison to why we won't do well next year, I have a few statistics to calm you down. There is no question that Tottenham missed Bale's goals, but I'll argue that Suarez's goals won't be missed to such an extent at Liverpool.

Bale's goals 2012/13: 21
Spur's goals 2012/13: 66
Spurs without Bale 12/13: 45

Suarez's goals 2013/14: 31
LFC goals 2013/14: 101
LFC without Suarez 13/14: 70

These statistics show that Liverpool score enough goals to compete for a top 4 space without Suarez, while Tottenham were only scoring enough goals for a mid table position. Obviously statisitcs aren't always reliable, especially since it doesn't take into consideration assists or appearances.

However, this does show that scoring goals won't be too much of an issue for Liverpool without Suarez, as we still have players such as Sterling and Sturridge who have become regular goal scorers. The defence is more of a concern for me, so buying defenders should be more of a priority than "replacing Suarez".

Believable1 Unbelievable9

You need to factor in assists and penalties won as well then that will look quite different mate

Agree0 Disagree10

11 Jul 2014 20:59:53
The reality is that Spurs failed to spend their money wisely. That is why they failed. They did not reinforce the defense and they bought a lot of high level functional players, but very few with flair (and one of the two flair players they did buy was injured all year). If we spend the money across the whole squad and wise proper, careful planning, then we'll do very very well next season. Personally, I trust BR to do that. Fair play if anyone doesn't, guess only time will tell

Agree5 Disagree6

@lfcsam91 You're not wrong but then figure that we'd have stats for a 10-man Liverpool team. Assume that whoever would "replace" Suarez would at least equal in goals what Suarez would have gotten through assists and pen's won etc and the figures are still good reading for any Liverpool fan.

Also consider that Suarez gave the ball away 61 times last season, and figure how many less we would have conceded without him in the team. These things even out!

Agree5 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 17:46:22
Eds do you know if lfc still had to buy suarez out of the rest of his contact, even though suarez pushed through the move. Not sure how these things are finalised. Sorry if this has been answered already but can't find it if it has been.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

{Ed001's Note - the figures have been posted a number of times by Ed002, I have to admit that I can't remember what they are though either. I apologise, as I do know what they would have paid, but my head is spinning and I just can't think.}

11 Jul 2014 19:39:58
Evening Ed's, I'm a first time poster so please be gentle!

I am somewhat confused by our apparent lack of interest now in Moreno; I thought a deal was close a few weeks back (just a difference in how both parties wanted the payments set up etc.) Now, with LS's sale, we should have plenty of cash to pay what they want up front, yet we appear to be looking elsewhere. why, after being so keen?

The other names I've seen linked with us for LB don't really fill me with confidence, but I have heard great things about Moreno.

Great job you're doing guys, thank you!

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - we didn't get paid the money in cash up front.}

Thanks Ed, I wasn't aware of that! So we're in a completely different boat to the one in which Tottenham found themselves last year! Shame, I'd have loved for us to have got him, played Flanagan at RB and shipped Bad-johnson out!

hope we can stop talkin about suarez now on here and concentrate on our team

Believable14 Unbelievable1

We'll be talking about that lad forever more I believe friend. He's one of the best players and most productive players I think the Premier League has ever seen. 30 goals and 14 assists (i think), is ridiculously amazing considering he was banned for 5 or 6 games and took no penalties.

Suarez is of the Ronaldo, Henry, Cantona, Bergkamp ilk. He's easily of that quality and aside from his failings in discipline, which will also be a reoccurring talking point for years; he is an excellent footballer and a conversation point for goals and drama. Wait until he scores his first goal for Barcelona, the news will be talking about him, again. :)

Agree0 Disagree8

Yeah, that news report sometime in late November ;) We have plenty (of positives and negatives) to talk about, and I'd imagine most of the board talk will be the dozens of strikers linked in the next few weeks.

Agree0 Disagree5

Yes we all know how great and that but me for one is sick of all this suraez talk now its time get back to the team and admire the likes of sturridge and sterling and talk of players linked to the club i'm sick of hearing about the guy

{Ed008's Note - With the current signings already I think that's the idea.

11 Jul 2014 20:28:19

Agree2 Disagree5

I think that 4-3-3 is our best formation. it was only the efforts to fit LS and DS together that changed things. Each system has it's pro's n cons. but I'd prefer 4-3-3. But I think Brendan will swap and change the systems quite a bit again next season.

£75m according to the echo and I'll take there word over sly all day long.

Agree9 Disagree0

Its £ 71 million for Suarez.

Lallana was around £ 27 million, Emre at around £10.5 million and Lambert close to £ 5 million so around £ 42M. spent already. Markovic & Origi for a combined £ 30 million will see the spending rise to £ 72 million and the SuareX money gone. Further deals are dependent on how much the transfer budget stretches and on the further sales of the likes of Assaidi, Aspas, Coates, Coady, Robinson, Suso, Reina, Wisdom, Agger, maybe Lucas, maybe Johnson & maybe Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 19:52:53
I was disappointed to see Torres go but was delighted to see my first choice at that time Suarez arrive. I thought Carroll had great potential too. It's been a pleasure to see Luis wear the red. Sturridge is the obvious "replacement" but I'd like to see a top quality player arrive, not necessary a striker. Robben would be nice. Not a major name but I was impressed with Brahimi (Algeria) at the world cup.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

11 Jul 2014 19:44:32
Whoever comes in to "replace" Suarez is going to need a thick skin to put up with the "fans" and the pressure of replacing such a good footballer.
Either that or score 32 goals and give us all Suarez amnesia.
Wilfred bony is an excellent striker I would welcome him at Liverpool.

Believable7 Unbelievable2

Mikey, nice to see someone with a sensible and realistic attitude. These fanciful names being desired are just not realistic for where we are at just now. A few more years exposure at the top level then maybe, but unfortunately not now. So we need to make do with the next level. I think Bony is just that, plus his physical presence gives us an outlet if teams decide to press our defenders when our keeper has the ball. Which they were happy to do knowing that the resulting long ball would be easily won against the giants of Sterling n Suarez!

Agree0 Disagree1

Most of suarez goals came against small teams and we usually won by a few goals so we can afford to drop at least half the goals he scored and still be a success. A 20 goal a season forward is all we need. Would love a punt on balotelli but he is to much of a risk

Not gutted he's gone. Not at all. Not particularly worried about the number of goals that we will miss. We have options. What does concern me is the type of goals that will be missed. The guy has let us all down, but he is undoubtedly a genius. I just don't see where, when people park the bus that genuine creative spark of genius will come from.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

Its not a joke, but Rickie Lambert will offer more when people will park the bus. Sturridge and Suarez tried the same things against Chelsea, and we desperately needed another option. Teams park the bus anyway, but when better teams do it, another option is needed.

Agree4 Disagree1

We didn't need another option against Chelsea we needed to execute the key passes better and have more patience in the build up play, I remember Gerrard in particular smacking a fair few hopeful and long range shots. Neville and Carra analyzed in depth what Liverpool did wrong. I just don't get this myth that sticking a target man would've won us the match. Lambert is a fantastic footballer and much more than a target man. In fact I don't even think Southampton used him as one so we have no way in vouching for his ability in that role.

Agree1 Disagree5

Suarez got marked out of the game against the big sides and didn't actually score many goals. arguably it should have allowed more space for other players but it didn't as we still tried to play through Suarez as that's what we did.

Now everyone will have to step up and hopefully we'll have more of a threat from four or five players instead of one main threat with sturridge and sterling less of a threat

Agree0 Disagree5

In the Chelsea match it may not have won it for us, but against teams that park the bus, he will be very useful and potentially a game winner. I still feel we need another star up top, but I can wait another six months or a year if need be. Sturridge is a stud, Lambert and Borini are both worthy of the shirt, and you've got plenty of young'uns waiting in the wings (as well as Sterling, who can play all over the attack).

Even when saurez didn't score or assist his movement was pulling defenders with him and giving other players space.
Saurez is one of the best players in the world and were not going to replace him unless we bought messi.
The team as a hole should improve now with that money and its just getting the rite players in for us to move forward.
We need an established player to come in though not just players showing promise.
Strengthen the defence and we don't need 100 goals anyways.

What do you think the odds will be for Suarez to bite Ramos in the Madrid derby?

Believable7 Unbelievable7

Zero, because Barcelona and Madrid are two different Cities. The clue is that they have different names!

Any chance eds could dig up posts from last year, I am almost sure some people were moaning we didn't go in for Bony, and further back Remy? Now Bony scored 20+ in all competitions and Remy has scored goals for the past two seasons, they are annoyed at the links with these players. Wait till the likes of Lallana, possibly Bony etc play for the club and perform badly like Adam and Carroll before writing them off the same way. If Bony scored 20 goals I am sure nobody will be moaning then

Believable5 Unbelievable1

Why is it a problem that people don't want us to sign just any striker? Its as long as they support them after they have been signed. On top of this there is hardly a massive campaign of hatred against the pair.

Agree1 Disagree4

I wanted bony last season and even more so now! Never wanted Remy and still don't to be honest though. seems to have some off field issues

11 Jul 2014 18:33:42
Lot of people very negative about Bony. Not saying he is coming but on the off chance here is a query
1. What was Bony's goal tally for last season and in the World Cup and also his assists in comparison to DS tally. Asking purely to see how they compared seeing as DS would have had excellent supply in the league versus the supply Bony had.
Anyone got the numbers as some of you guys are 'stat animals'.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

Bony and DS both got 1 in the WC,

Bony was 15 in the league and wasn't Sturridge 20/21?

Agree1 Disagree5

11 Jul 2014 19:31:32
Only Suarez aguero dzeko scored more goals in all competitions last season, would be a great signing in my opinion

Agree6 Disagree2

Bony has had a similar progression to Suarez so far… took eredivisie by storm. Last Eredivisie season scored more than a goal a game - first full premier league season nearly scored 1 in 2 games (more than Suarez managed in his first full season / he got 11 but hugely influential).

now Bony is set up to reach 20+ goals in the next two seasons. if we sign him for £19m although his value might not reach £75m he certainly has the ability to double in value should he succeed at Liverpool. that being said Sturridge is already a 20+ goal player.

Agree6 Disagree0

Bony scored twice in the World Cup, both equalizers -- once, in the game against Japan which they went on to win, and once in the final group game (where they eventually lost to Greece after a stoppage time penalty). He split time with one of the heroes of football in Didier Drogba, who also did quite well at the tournament. Ivory Coast were unfortunate not to progress (and likely would have done better than stagnant Greece in the 16)

Agree5 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 17:42:32
Hi Eds, I know your not the Liverpool manager and this could be abit of a silly question but do you see Liverpool Looking for a striker to start up top along side Sturridge or do you see us just playing with the one up top. I also think we could have a new SAS is Sturridge and Sterling., If you remember when studge was out norwich game and sterling played upfront he was class. your thoughts mate?

Eds fellow reds, just read some posts and the reply from royzred (spelling) saying keep the faith BR will sign the quality neede . My question is out of all the players signed by BR which one do you class as top quality .because IMO he hasn't signed one yet .

Believable0 Unbelievable10

I've just read your last two comments Kingluis. May I just point out the luis in Dutch means exactly the same as in English - louse! What's in a name eh!

Agree4 Disagree6

All I want is a top quality team, we finished 2nd last year so we can't be far away from being a fairly top quality side. My hope is that the team is gently tweaked every season with one or 2 buys and we promote from within giving our youngsters opportunities. I seem to remember that was a model many years ago at Anfield

Agree8 Disagree0

The name king Luis is the king from kenny and Luis from Suarez .but my last name is Lewis

Agree1 Disagree7

Sakho and Sturridge.

Borini, Coutinho, Mingolet and Ilori have the potential.

You are ignoring what he has done with the current squad though. He upped the game of Suarez, Flanagan, Sterling, Henderson, Gerrard and even Downing.

Try not to be such a muppet please.

Agree9 Disagree0

This is the first season we have had CL. If you don't think the quality of players coming in this summer is higher than his previous windows then there's nothing I or anyone else can say to make you happy.

MIGNOLET - decent first season, plenty of room for improvement. GOOD
TOURE - signed on a free to replace Carra. Played nearly 30 games and we finished 2nd. GOOD
SAKHO - was always going to take time to settle. First choice for France. Kept Mangala out of team who's valued at 30m. Better and younger than Benatia who's valued at 30m. GOOD
ALLEN - signed when BR was taking over and worried he'd be without Gerrard who'd had lots of injuries the season before. The fee was a release clause. BR wanted a disciple. Gerrard stayed fit and Allen got injured so 15m looks expensive for what we've seen so far. Obvious quality though. Played his part in finishing 2nd and one of the core 14/15 players. GOOD
COUTINHO - tremendous ability and so young. So for the price paid and how good he can be. GREAT
STURRIDGE - No words needed. GREAT
ASSAIDI - paid peanuts for a squad guy. Don't think he's good enough for Liverpool. Won't lose money on him. POOR
ALBERTO - part of a Chelsea like strategy to buy players who can increase in value over time. Time will tell. FoR now POOR
ASPAS - the logic was fine, he'd done well in Spain. Never got to the pace of the PL. Won't lose a fortune though. POOR
BORINI - again made sense for BR to buy players he knew when he came in. Great attitude, decent loan spell. UNDECIDED
ILORI - just young and not often young CBs are trusted in a team at our level. Could be as good as Varane in which case we have a bargain. UNDECIDED
Loans were loans. At least we didn't waste money on signings we didn't really want and Cissokho & Moses played a part (albeit small) in finishing 2nd.
We haven't seen the new signings in action so it's impossible to comment.

So overall it's not a bad record is it? We might lose 2.5m on Aspas & Assaidi this summer. But Coutinho & Sturridge have gone up in value by c30m combined.

Trot out the usual stuff like the herd who don't think for themselves though if it makes you feel better. And we'd all care more if BR had taken us to 12th in the table rather than 2nd.

Agree7 Disagree1

Anfield boy, agree that coutinho and sturridge are good players wouldn't say great .would they make first team in the leagues top sides not sure .they would make 15 man and the only other mignolet but not any better than reina for me .the point I'm trying to make is that LFC recruitment staff aren't the best imo

Agree0 Disagree10

Luis. But we are a top team. 2nd best last season. What's the point of asking whether one of our players would get into another team? I'm only concerned with my team and if you're as fair as I think I have been you will see we aren't muppets in the transfer market. I haven't tried to say we've got it right all the time. But we do alright compared to other top teams. Spurs (Chiriches, Chadli, Capoue, Soldado, Lamela), United (Fellaini, Powell, Zaha, Buttner) and Man City (Sinclair, Rodwell, Jovetic, Savic). Make you feel any better? Probably not!

Agree6 Disagree0

Kingluis you are coming across as clueless. We just finished 2nd, tell me how you would not consider us to be one of the leagues top sides after finishing 2nd? Enlighten me.

Agree7 Disagree0

Don't forget lalanna ems ;) don't care he hasn't touched a ball for us yet he is and will be top top quality!

Agree6 Disagree1

Not saying we're not a top team, I'm making the point that all the teams around us are going to be better this year and we have lost our best player .thats fine but we need top players to come in not average prem players

Agree0 Disagree5

Average means in the middle doesn't it? Lallana was among the best players in the PL. Short listed for PFA award. Lambert & Bony among the top scorers in the league, hence not your average strikers. Markovich won the title with Benfica and helped them get to the Europa final and is considered one of a handful of players capable of becoming a superstar. I'm still not getting your point. Your own definition (average) can't be levelled at our actual or prospective signings. Arsenal spent 40m on Ozil and City 27m on Navas and both were bang average in the Prem. Is it just sexy names you want?

Agree4 Disagree0

I believe the transfer window is open for a few more days, and am sure once we get the first lump sum from Barca, we should buy a top player or two, just give Brendan time to make the right choice . ynwa .

eds reds now suarez has gone, good luck to him he gave us everything! but who do we get to play up top? I think sturridge as the main man would work and matbe that's what he wants. as a partner for danny i'd say maybe bony but a cheaper and proven striker is remy. 8million buy out clause can't argue with that in my opinion. godbless96 steviep62.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

I'd like his versatility as well, easily can play both wings and up top centrally. We should all get this whole "replace" out of our heads and just try to focus on what we can do to improve ourselves.

By that I mean he's terrible in comparison to Suarez but he's still very good so I'd be happy with him coming.

People now saying Sanchez isn't all that good since he signed for Arsenal. IMO it was a transfer tussle we lost they won. My opinion of the player won't change. He could get into any team in this league and could be the difference Arsenal need this year. I hope it works out for them and he hits the ground running. I'm not worried anyway we will look after our own business to keep the pace this year. People need to grow up. We're not supposed to be the bitters. Congratulations DG and the rest of u arsenal fans if your about you guys got a cracking player.

On to our own squad. I for one am delighted with what we have done so far. Although one thing that seems to be happening more is players giving ultimatums to there club's to force a move namely Lalana and Lovern. What if barca come for them next season, will they do the same to us? Don't get me wrong both are very welcome additions to the team. I trust BR & co know what there doing. I think if we can get Monero, Lovern, Origi, Markovic and what ever else FSG have up there selves this will the best transfer window since we seen the Spanish Armada.

I said it earlier Suarez left today and the letter IMO ensures no bitterness was left behind and hopefully if he comes back to Anfield he won't be subject to abuse unlike a certain Mr. Torres.

Cheers guys.

Now we have the Suarez deal sorted I think we'll see 4 deals pretty quickfire.
Lovren, Markovic and Origi look dead certs. I expect a left back also from Bertrand, Rojo and Moreno.
After that I think we'll sign one more forward; Ed002 says Huntelaar is most likely atm. The papers are all over Bony like a rash. Personally I'm hoping Rodgers pulls a shock out the bag. Someone like Reus, Lavezzi or Rodriguez that nobody saw coming. that's just me being hopeful though.
I also reckon we'll sign Vorm and expect the papers have got it all wrong regarding Bony/Davies.

Hopeful: Lovren, Rojo, Markovic, Lavezzi and Vorm.
Likely: Lovren, Bertrand, Markovic, Huntelaar and Vorm.

I would still be pleased with the likely scenario though.

Agree4 Disagree4

Defensive reinforcements should have

Believable0 Unbelievable2

11 Jul 2014 17:30:15
I don't think Brendan would consider letting a world class player go and not bring in a big signing. I know lallana is good, but I still think he's got a big money move planned

Believable0 Unbelievable5

Several. Markovich 20m, Lovren 20m & Origi 10m for starters. That takes us to 90m so don't hold out for the wet dream 40m signing. It ain't happening.

11 Jul 2014 17:28:24
With the speed that Rodgers has acted on this summer's transfers, I was thinking how he must have been severely constrained (financially) the past two summers in being able to get his targets. Not to say that the constraints are no longer there, but I wish a lot of the posters out here would keep all this in mind while posting about insulting other teams with low offers or not going after top or world class players (whichever one is popular at the moment). To me FSG just keeps on showing it's a professional, well run organization. You do what you can with what you have!

Believable1 Unbelievable6

11 Jul 2014 17:27:53
Luis Suarez: plenty of people asking how we will replace him. We wont

Plenty of people dissapointed he's gone.

He had to go, football genius that he is, the man is a liability, I forgave the previous misdemeanors, I supported him, but this latest incident was just too much, he could have dragged Liverpool through the mud again.

The club have done well to get as much as they have for him despite the recent problems.

You can't replace a player like Suarez, but you can move on and find another good player who can become great, the next best thing, might just be in our youth set up. who knows.

I am optimistic for the coming season, trust Brendan, signings so far seem like good options. players we seem to be strongly linked with that have some form of possibility (those the Eds have confirmed as much as they can that there is definite interest) of signing also look like good options.

This is Liverpool, we create legends.

Believable0 Unbelievable4

11 Jul 2014 17:26:16

Believable4 Unbelievable4

11 Jul 2014 18:34:22
Sanchez was a must, but he chose arsenal. Who have been constantly in CL for how long? He maybe saw us as not a dead cert to get back in after only getting back in this year after 5 years out of it. Also. Pride may have bean a factor. Nobody wants to be the make weight in a deal.
I would have fkin loved it though!!

Agree1 Disagree3

11 Jul 2014 17:25:29
I think Danny Sturridge will thrive under the
Pressure now as our main goal threat and As our
Main out and out striker I think he should easily
Get 25 plus goals. Sterling has been getting better
And better each game so I can see him getting at
Least 12 plus. With lambert, lallana, Henderson coutinho and Markovic all chipping in with 5 goals plus we will not struggle to get goals. The main concern is still at the back.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

He didn't thrive as the main striker for England at the World Cup, just an opinion, long range efforts was all.

Agree2 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - he didn't get any service either.}

I think what people are forgetting is suarezs 31 goals will be missed but if we replace him that new signing will get 20 /25 goals so even if they get 20 then the 50 that we conceded you can knock 20 off that our goal differance could be 9 goals better we need to shore up the defence and make up for what we may lose upfront

Agree3 Disagree2

11 Jul 2014 18:34:12

Agree2 Disagree0

DBol, you need to put things into context mate, he's banned for 4 months, he's consistently in trouble and banned for matches over the last three seasons since he's been in LFC's employment.

He was banned for racial remarks, banned for swearing at fans, banned for biting a Chelsea player and now banned for biting an Italian player in the World Cup. As good as he is, he is also a liability to our club.

80 million Euro's for someone who will be nearly 28 the next time he kicks a ball in competitive football and has a discipline issue unrivaled in the current world of football, is for Liverpool, very good business.

He hasn't gone to one of our direct rivals (like Torres did) and we have made Champions League and have an extra £25 million on what Arsenal offered us around this time last year. FSG/LFC have done pretty well here in my opinion.

It's tough because Suarez has so much ability but that's football, he wanted one of the big Spanish two and now he's got one and we've received 80 million euros after we paid 26 million euros for him 3 and a half seasons ago, this is and should be understood as the best possible outcome at this time for our club.

Agree1 Disagree0

At the very most Suarez will cost Barcelona £64 million. simply because his clause is 80m euro. that's the most he will cost. It will probably be £59 million which is 75 million euro.

It will be £59 million. Barca will not pay the full £64 million due to him biting. He should of behaved himself. He's to blame not ayre.

Agree0 Disagree1

Mickee. Do you have any evidence for what you post? I swear another paragraph would have had the fee below Torres.

It's like the old joke about the Jewish boy who asks his dad for 50p. His dad says: 50p? 40p? What do you want 30p for?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 16:49:50
I really think we should put our efforts in to convincing Thomas Muller to come to LFC. We won't replace Suarez player for player, this much is obvious; however Muller's positioning, work rate and finishing, as well as his big match temperament and age - this makes him the prime candidate to compliment our system.

I won't get into the financial logistics as I understand the confusion surrounding player transfers and what LFC can afford to do. But if it is feasible, we should make a concerted effort. Muller has expressed concern about his position at Bayern in the past so a move is not completely out of the question.

If it is to be Bony, I do believe he can turn out to be a great player albeit quite different to what we're used to. Trust Brendan, he knows what he's doing

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Obviously would be good but every team in the world would want him if he wants to leave which I don't think he does sadly. but even so out of all his options I doubt he would choose Liverpool over psg Madrid citeh Chelsea etc. unfortunately at the moment compared to the world's best we can't match location or money certainly not both :/

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 17:10:16

Am I the only one on here who actually thinks Bony would be a great addition?

Strong, reasonably quick, can get that half yard and an unbelievable shot. As good a scoring record as Benzema, Higuain and never gets injured.

Also gets involved and is very useful in Build Up play. I'm personally hoping this one gets done.

Underrated methinks.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

No Davey. I too can't see too much wrong with a feller who was new to the PL, played in a struggling team, had two managers yet scored 25 goals and then popped 2 in for good measure at the WC. He was also the striker that caused more problems than any other I can think of at Anfield last season. If he wad going to Borussia Dortmund or Arsenal for 19m the same people would be moaning that we are missing out on him. And to those people who say he can't play football. What team has been playing for? Is it the one that Martinez & Rodgers built.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you both.
He put in a fair share of 'eye catching' performances last season.
He ain't no 'Luis Suarez' but he has all the attributes to become another Liverpool Legend. If he's availible for £20 million he'd be worth every penny.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree. I think the main problem for some of our fans is that he doesn't play for a foreign team or have an exotic sounding name!

I personally think in his last 5 or 6 games for us Luis lost a bit of bite.

Though going to Barca will give him something to get his teeth into.

I just hope he hasn't bitten off more than he can chew.

Thought I'd get in there first.

Life goes on he will be missed but I have faith in Brendon, The Club and our other great players that sadly have been forgotten because of this media circus.

He like many others will never experience again supporters like ours all over the world. We are unique and we are irreplaceable.

gotta have my say.
£75mil is a v good bit of business. he was off no matter what. with his latest biting incident, whoever was putting the deal together deserves a medal for getting that kind of cash for him.
If the deal was in discussions in November, then even before the world cup he was only ever going to attract a price of £80mil tops. he's 27 with a history of suspensions. I think the club have done a great job keeping it under wraps for so long and commanding a good price.
Thanks for the memories Luis, the last game I saw you at was vs Chelsea at Anfiled last year, where u scored the equalizer in the last minute, oh and something else happened that we'll soon forget about.

If only his replacement came from the academy, a local lad, things would all be ok by the weekend.

On that thought, are there any local lads in the academy that are an out and out striker?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

11 Jul 2014 17:14:24
There's no way Barcelona have paid £75m for the Bite King. It's more like £64m methinks.

I posted earlier that I also think £75m was a good bit of buisness. Check out BBC Sport article on how "Barcelona get their man, Liverpool get their money".

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - should be yes.}

Gutted he's gone but a liability £75 million is good money, now let's not waste that money. Remember, if he bites/racially abuses again then his career will probably be over and Barca can't re-sell.

It seems like every time we sell our top forward, we get another one. Could Bony be that striker? I'm not sure. I honestly think markovic will be the next big thing. I'm more excited about that signing than I am any of the others.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

He's already at the club. Sturridge can easily score more than Torres & Suarez at the rate he's going.

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Jul 2014 16:11:30
I really do not want bony. No way is he a good enough replacement for Suarez, it's actually ridiculous.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I would say he's not the player we need. You can't say he's not good enough he hasn't even played for us! He could play really well you never know but I would much rather an attacking winger.

Agree1 Disagree2

I'm not so sure. Bony proved he can scrap and work hard for his team and getting as many goals as he did with, arguably, worse service than he would get with us can only give encouragement. Ultimately we are not going to get a player the same as Suarez, but we can get a player that is less expensive and less proven than he, but with the desire, ambition, hunger and raw talent to do the club justice. Bony might just be that striker. I would not bet against it at any rate. Would still prefer Robben though and throw him up front with Sturridge!

Agree1 Disagree0

Who is the replacement for Suarez?

There is no direct replacement for a player of his ability and attitude.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 16:48:44
Bony may be just the player to partner Sturridge, look at him like that rather than looking at him as a direct replacement for suarez

Agree1 Disagree0

Ok I get where you're coming from when you say "less proven", but lads, not every player is going to surprise us. Remember we got Coutinho. Nobody knew who he was, now he's 'suddenly' a great player. But we can't be clever all the time. We can't keep signing unproven players, hoping they get better. Potentiol is nothing unless it's achieved. What we need is a fans favourite, a freaking shot in the dark! Muller, Reus, I know I sound mad in the head but it's what the fans want, and it's what the team needs, and it will give the players confidence when they see a fantastic name coming in.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 16:07:31
The one player that really excites when he plays (apart from in world cup semi-finals!) is Robben. Whenever he gets the ball and has a little space I always feel like he can make an impact. For Bayern he provides much of the energy and he provided much entertainment in an orange shirt over the past month. I can just about forgive his theatrical because his footy is so brilliant. Any chance we can get him?
Thanks

Made we wonder how much successful EPL experience is worth? Would you agree that doubling a lower fee (

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Ern typing epic fail!

To summarise, how much do you think successful EPL experience is worth when looking at new players? Double the fee? Extra £10m?

Agree1 Disagree1

It's more to do with the money in our league. It's richer than any other. Surviving in it is therefore ultra competitive. Players who have proved themselves therefore have a premium because they can help you cement your place at whatever level you are competing at. For the same reason lots of clubs chase the best players so their price goes up. To balance things out every club has to look for bargains abroad. For every Michu (first season) though there are ten Bebe's.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 15:55:05
So if we signed markovic and lovern, I would be glad to just stop there. We don't need too many new faces or it will disrupt team rhythm. We have youngsters who are ready to step up; we are massively in debt, let's just use some money to balance the books so that in the future we could possibly invest heavily, safely. Arsenal were "successful" while balancing the books, consistently a big side. I feel like we need to string several years back in the champions league as it's not going to be easy with 8 teams competing for 4 spots each year.

Love to hear your thoughts, although we should avoid talking money I guess.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Agree with the sentiment but Arsenal had 2 issues:

1) the stadium - much more lucrative than ours, but hopefully addressed in a couple of seasons

2) they may have balanced the books, but all of their best players left and so they didn't win anything for years.

Would rather we saw CL as a fallback option whilst chasing the big prize, like last season. Then our best players (biters notwithstanding!) are more likely to stay long term and allow a legacy to be built a la the mancs.

Agree1 Disagree0

Need a LB. so no wouldn't be happy.

I'd like to say thank you to Luis Suarez for these last few years at Liverpool Football Club. Yes, he has been involved in some silly issues (and that's all that ssn seem to remember him for), but let's remember the good bits. Luis was the best player I have ever seen play for us. He is a footballing genius. Remember his surreal ball control against Newcastle before he rounded Krul and stick it in the net, or his goal from the halfway line against Norwich to complete his first Liverpool hattrick. (And it wouldn't be the last against Norwich either).

Suarez was an absolute joy to watch. It made you even more excited to see our club play, seeing the team sheet, noticing his name sticking out above the rest, and there was something that wanted you to score more than anyone else for our team.

I am sad to see him go, but he's going on to better things. I hope he achieves a lot in Spain and I'm sure he will.
I'll finish by saying, thank you Luis Suarez, you already have your place in Liverpool's history. YNWA

hi all

good luck to suarez for the future
he played 100% while wearing the shirt, the club had no option but to sell him
ynwa
remember we don't buy world class we make them

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Suarez wanted to leave Liverpool this time last season, he's banned for even longer this time around and we sell him for even more money than we were previously offered. Which all adds up as very clever business astuteness from the club.

Luis is going to be a couple of weeks away from his 28th birthday (January) before he kicks a ball in competitive football again. he's got possibly 5 seasons left at the top with 3 of those seasons coming over the age of 30 years old.

FSG really have done well in my mind. Keeping Suarez last season in the face of his desire to leave and Arsenal making a miserable offer of £40 million and 1 pound. We kept the guy another year, he played his butt off and earned a new level of love from the fans. He got a new contract and nearly helped us reach our true promised land by winning the title. Although we just fell short and instead we had too settle for a return to Champions League football, which has been missing for far too long.

So, all in all, in my opinion selling now for even more than we were offered last year, with the lad acting like a zombie fool again. It's well played. Yes, we lose a tremendous player but a tremendous player who is consistently the dirty word in football and who wanted to leave nearly every year he played for us. Neved and the Juve yacht twice, Arsenal's ridiculously low offer and two bites in the space of 14 months.

As strange as this sounds, it's a good deal for Liverpool to get 80 million Euro's for Suarez. I'm sure this amount of money will help the club and squad to evolve over the next few seasons without the talis-manic Suarez.

We move on without him now and let Barcelona defend the player and pick him up when he falls. We didn't think we'd find ''the magic striker'' when Torres moved to Chelsea, many probably feel we have a similar problem and rightly so, it is true that we've just sold one of the most productive players on the planet but we move on.

With Suarez all but gone we can focus on what to spend the money personally I only think we need 3 players of 1st team quality A new CB, LB and an attacking winger

If we got say Lovern, Rodriguez (wolfsburg) and maybe Candreva or greizmann I think we can challenge again this season, What I don't really want to see is us buy 5 or 6 youngsters with potential I think it that was great strategy for us but now we have a great foundation of young players coming through the academy on and ones we have bought over the last few years we need players who are going to be in our starting XI

and we still need to get a few players of our books, Aspas, Assaidi, Coates, Reina and Agger to name a few

Suarez is world class but also a liability. We will strengthen our squad and replace one player who has never completed a season without ban for us for several players who even combined will probably be banned for less games over the next 2 years, and will between them score or assist the goals we've lost.

I am of course Happy with the signing of Lallana, Lambert is a good plan b, Can no one has really seen much off so hard to judge. The same as Markovic.

This is now when we see what Brendan is made off. Can you get a game changer type player in or are we going to have to settle for the future stars or players BR thinks he can improve.

Personally I do not think Wilfred friggin Bony is the answer!

Last season we got it right with the type of signings we needed but didn't get - Willian and Diego Costa.

Come on BR get a plyer in that's going to excite us. Gunners got Sanchez and are trying for Khedeira, they also got Ozil last year! you don't have to be champions to attract elite players.

I do feel a huge let down coming though, with markovic and bony being our so called replacements for the best player in the world!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Guess you would have thought the same when we bought Coutinho? or maybe even Sturridge?

Let's have some faith that BR knows what he's doing.

Agree2 Disagree0

So agree with u

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Jul 2014 14:49:52
Aresnal can afford the so called "big stars" as they have been turning profits recently. As shown by the players that Rodgers has been linked to or bought in the past, he does not have much interest in "big star" players, but rather players who want to prove something and have the potential of being world class.

Just look at players like Sturridge and Coutinho, as both have helped turn Liverpool into the team they are today. Both have capabilities to be world class, yet we got them at reduced prices. This also follows the trend when we were linked to Diego Costa last summer, yet lost interest when his reputation began to grow along with his price.

Emre Can and Markovic have every chance of being world stars. I fully believe that in a year or two, we will look back at this summer, and think they were bargains, just as how we do with Sturridge and Markovic. Just because few fans have seen them play, does not give us the right to say that they are not top class signings.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 14:52:28
What footballing world have you been watching?

Markovic is being tipped worldwide as a future star, so although you may not have see much of him those who have see him as a great player with the prospect to be a great.

Bony, whilst not one of the worlds best, scored a hatful of goals for mid table team in his first season in the most competitive league in the world. Was Suarez one of the worlds best before we signed him? No. Did we develop his already impressive talent to make him a great? Yes. Is the same possible with Bony? Possibly.

You have an opinion and that is fine, it is however wrong. When Bony signed for Swansea there were some big teams looking at him, just as they are now. Just as big teams are looking at Markovic. We are trying to sign players that other top teams are, and when numerous big teams look to one player there's one certainty, they can't all be wrong; he must be a good player.

Lets be patient and watch this transfer window unfold without ridiculing linked players before they even sign. Sturridge should be a lesson to all who say a player is not good enough. Sometimed the right team can make a player great.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree have some faith Fred. Markovic is a very good player who will become world class in my opinion . Bony is not a like for like replacement for Suarez but who is. Wilifred Bony for me would be a good signing. He is very quick, a big strong lad with lots of ability and flair and at our club will improve his overall play. Still leaves us plenty of change at 19 mill for Lovren and another couple of quality signings. We are a collective and a very good team and Suarez leaving will only change the dynamics not the overall quality we still hve.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we had signed ozil last season would you be happy right now? Very few arsenal fans are!

Agree1 Disagree0

If we were to tempt Swansea with a bid, Sturridge, Bony, Borini and Lambert are all four totally different options in similar positions. I'd prefer flexibility over a like for like replacement for Suarez -- Sanchez would have been great, of course, but I'd prefer Bony to many others, including Jackson Martinez and Karim Benzema. He's BPL proven, scored loads in his first season in a new league with "decent at best" teammates, and progressed sharply afer his first six months in England. If we want players hungry to prove themselves at the top level, there ya go.

Agree0 Disagree0

I understand why you guys are saying have faith etc, D Studge always had talent everyone saw that at bolton, chelsea and citeh. Its only at Liverpool he started every game. Coutinho had been scouted since Rafa days so it was no surpirse he was going to be good (when he shows up of course).

As you say Markovic might well be world class one day but is he going to be the day the season rolls round?!

i am not being negative I am being realistic.

We should be able to attract one top player who will be a game changer!

Agree0 Disagree1

11 Jul 2014 16:19:28
Markovic has been scouted by Chelsea for a long time, and many people have tipped him to be a world class player. Everybody who sees him play say its obvious he has talent. At age 20, he's ready to play and will improve. Buying a player at this age and price makes much more sense than buying a player already at their peak for maximum price. So your defence makes no sense.

I think people are seriously underestimating Emre Can too. There are many people lauding him, including his previous manager, Hyypia. I think if we had signed him directly from Bayern Munich, people would have been much more excited, similar to why so many people are excited about the prospect of Shaqiri. Emre Can has all the traits to be world class in the future. Give our signings a chance for christ sake.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea has decided against taking him this summer for a low fee. They were looking to leave him in Portugal for another year.}

11 Jul 2014 16:52:59
Yes Ed, but the fact that they were planning on signing him next summer indicates they rate him. I think he's ready to play a role this season, but he wouldn't have been ready to compete with the likes of Hazard, Oscar or Schurrle

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Obviously he would have been much cheaper for Chelsea to buy and they still decided not to. It was the manager's decision.}

John I agree with most of your post, if we are going to compete well in the Champions League, we will need 2//3 world class players on the pitch, however, I believe both Sturridge and Sterling will step up this coming season, and hopefully 3/4 more signing will strenghten the team were we are a bit weak, say left back, centre back, winger, I have heard this 20 yrs old winger Markivic, spelling, will be a class act soon, look Suarez had to go, great player, always gave 100 per cent, but he wants a move, he will bite, and once bitten, twice shy, so let's trust Brendan Rodgers to take us to the next level . ynwa .

I can't believe the price quoted by balague - 81 million Euros! 64 million pounds - shocking if this is true. Once again Barcelona bully smaller clubs into selling players. How can the blatant tapping up of Saurez be legal too? Same as fabregas - same as Mascherano - shocking

Good riddence to him - he never once showed any loyalty to us after backing him through thick and thin.

I honestly think he will find it difficult in Spain. We have had his best years I'm sure.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why are you so bitter about it. The money should not concern you, and he will probably do well there.

Agree1 Disagree0

Spud. You got it all wrong with that post. His value is fair. You can't compare against Bale ( not you but lots of people are) who is much younger and doesn't bite people. They didn't tap him up. His reps were more than happy to talk to a number of clubs. LS made no secret of his desire to play in Spain. Therefore good riddance is probably being too disrespectful to a guy who always gave 100% and is probably the most gifted LFC player ever. I won't miss his antics but surely no fan of our club can ever forget some of the goals he scored and the sheer brilliance he showed many, many times in a Liverpool shirt. Cherish the memories but we move on.

Agree0 Disagree0

I figure that after the biting episode last season and the racism debacle he owed us at least a season. Before the latest biting incident I don't remember much talk of him moving, all was quiet. I think he has screwed us. I don't subscribe to the idea that he bit someone to get a move - that's just silly, but the whole thing has given him and Barcelona - aided by the media, the leverage he was looking for to get the transfer. Champagne corks will be popping in Manchester and London at this news.

I just hope Brendan gets it right with a replacement. If ever we needed a proven, consistent signing then it is now. We cannot afford to gamble this time. Easier said than done eh?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 14:51:22
whether he is successful there or not will depend to a large extent on Senor Messi

Agree0 Disagree0

Piledriver, we stood by that man to a point of ridicoulousness (the the shirts) that's why I feel bitter.

You say money doesn't concern me? I am a fan. My team is Liverpool. I want them to do well. More money = better signings. Look at city. Look at chelsea. Money = success - what don't you get?

I say this tongue in cheek but sadly it is true.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm choosing to believe £75m and in which case, I think that realistically is the best we could accept after he bit chiellini. Interesting article on BBC sport about how we have done well given the new contract. Only way, I believe, we could've got more than the supposed exit clause was if both RM and B were interested, and LS wasn't fussed so we got into a bidding war. But his bite put paid to all other suitors.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 17:42:09
Spudgun, This was inevitable, bite or not, as he is such a good player and his dream from the start was to play in Spain. As for the topic of money, Money does not equal success. What did Chelsea win last year (sorry Ed002). I am not going to tell you to support those clubs in reply, but I hope you understand that the club were not going to get a world record fee for someone of his age and ban. However, I think we both want the club to spend the money in the correct way, which they will.

Agree0 Disagree0

What on earth are you talking about Piledriver? Would man city and Chelsea have had any success with money? Answer absolutely not. It's nice to build on success but these are facts. Would City or Chelsea have won anything without cold hard cash to spend on transfers? Please answer truthfully.
Money isn't everything but sadly it is in football. Barcelona and Real Madrid spend BIG to achieve success season on season out. Fact of life. You can take that to the bank.

Lets agree to disagree. No hard feelings eh? :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Did you watch Ivory Coast in the World Cup or Swansea against City, United in the FA Cup. etc? Bony was joint fourth-goal scorer w/ Rooney and Aguero in a club you wouldn't expect to have a top five goal scorer. 20 million, strikers are wrapped up, and we can potentially bring in Markovic, Origi (loan back), Lovren and a left back. I feel a surprise class signing will happen before the window is over. Too much money not to sign at least a good striker IMO.

I remember one of the eds (Ed002-i think) said that Rodgers has less control over transfers due to previous buys. I was wondering if the eds & people want to share who they think was a poor buy?

Personally rate Rodgers but maybe a couple of poor ones, although I personally think this is due to them not being played enough rather than just poor players.

Illori has not played much-but think he could prove good signing

Aspas- never got enough playing time-but not good enough perhaps

Assaidi - great speed but not sure he is good enough. should get money back though I would have thought

Sturridge- great buy

Boroni - IMO very good buy. needs chance to shine but has good eye for goal, and will work hard-great attitude

Joe Allen- over priced perhaps but serves his role very well, mostly

Sahin - terrible attitude, clearly did not want to play for us

Yesil - can't comment

Alberto- no idea. needs more time, or sell. not sure he is good enough

Cissokho and moses - neither up to scratch-but maybe cover was needed?

Anyway over to you Eds & the rest

Hello Eds and posters
I would like to know your opinion on our transfer market strategy with young players. It is nice to see young lads with potential in our squad but is it really necessery to buy players from other teams when we already have some potential stars in our academy? No doubt Can, Origi or Markovic are players with bright future. But honestly, I would like to see more players from our academy in our first team with more time on the pitch next season like Ibe, Teixera, Suso (I would like to keep him but I know he wants out), Wisdom. Flanno and Reheem are great examples for them. We could save the money on stadium and strategic projects so we could be maybe more interesting destination for higher caliber players like Sanchez. i'm not calling for world class signings. I would like to built the team on players from our academy with few top quality signings around them in the future. They should be only missing pieces in the puzzle. History shows that top quality teams were often built on players from their academy - Barca, ManU, Ajax. I know it is very risky and you need a lot of patience as there is often problem for the young lads when they start to play with older (we can mention our Pacheco, Nemeth. ) What is your opinion on our academy, players and transfer policy? I believe in good and respectful discussion. Thanks for your replies and opinions. And again sorry for my english.
YNWA

I've read a number of posts here over the last few days on "how do we replace Suarez - how do we find *another* Suarez type player"?

I question whether we actually want another player of his type (if we could ever find one). I loved the style of football we played last year - but felt there were times where we over-elaborated in front of goal.

Perhaps Bony/Lambert type players have been bought to increase the directness of our play - to be supported by more creativity from the midfield (Lallana, Markovic) etc

Thoughts?

Cheers

I will be very disappointed if we change the way we play next season. It was the most I enjoyed watching us for as long as I can remember and every neutral also always wanted to watch us for the attacking nature of our game. For a first season in the BPL he had a cracker. He scored twice in the WC, both at very important times for his country; unfortunately, the defense let them down with a late penalty -- he equalized when they were down in the Japan game and against Greece. I really would like to see him join us.

It seems to me we are raiding midtable teams. No i'm not going to say this player is exciting etc.if he's not. Bony is no improvement on what we have nor need. Davis is a poor lb. If we cannot improve an area we simply shouldn't buy and give our youngsters a chance.
I hear the edds questioning fans and ffp and debts but someone should put a reign on BR. It looks like we will spend the most money in the PL this market and some of our buys are good players however excessively over priced. Bony and davis, betrand? Some of yous can say they will add depth but they will only add numbers. Il remind some fans of borini, aspas, alberto, sissoko, moses etc. Money wasted and the loanee players mentioned were poor last season.
We should be be buying 3-4 top players and giving texeira, kelly etc a real chance next season. Our defense was abysmal last season and were messing about with.lovren and looking at poor LB's. Chelsea, arsenal, and united are buying what.they need and.top drawer. that's called efficiency, we are buying numbers again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

OK, sure, mistakes were made in the past, but why are you criticising BR about Bony and Davies who are unconfirmed links? We should make judgement only on what has been finalised, not on any random name that pops up. Both Can and Lambert represent very good value for money, while Lallana comes with the englishman overprice, but he was one of the top players in the Premierleague last year! Of all the other rumored signings, only Markovic seems dead certain, and he is one of the top prospects in Europe

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree big al, where are these top players that being in the champions league apparently attracts! Chelsea sign costa, arsenal sign sanchez, utd going for vidal and hummels, we need to set our standards a little bit higher to keep up, otherwise without suarez and no world class player replacing him, it will be back to 6th or 7th i'm afraid!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree that we seem to be looking to increase the numbers with players we could have attracted whilst we were a mid-table side. We should be aiming higher since we are now back in the Champions League.

I do however disagree with you on Lovren. He would be an excellent option to have at the back.

Eds, As well as an attacking winger and a striker, do you know if we are are looking to strenghten our defensive midfield area? I think stevie will be used more cleverly this year and for sure won't be playing every game.We need a tough tackling midfielder .Lucas has had his time too n joe allen is a little weak for me.Was emre can bought in the for this reason? Or are we still looking for more depth?

Cant belive we might end up with borini and lambert to replace suarez goals. Borini is dreadfull at best. God I hope we get rid.

Everyone is, of course, entitled to their own opinion, and as such there will always be varying opinions on a subject. However, I think the way you have written that really is quite disrespectful.
I hope Borini proves you (and others) wrong this year. He is young, raw, he may not make it. But at least he will try. If we had more like him is the past we may not have dropped so far behind?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lallana, Markovic?

I hope we get rid of you personally! The world would be a better and brighter place without people like you constantly bad mouthing all the time!

Clueless dig at our players again there. Have you even watched either of them play? I cannot wait for them to prove you wrong. Mind, you pathetic excuses that call yourselves "fans" will just find something else to complain about.

Agree0 Disagree0

He does put in the effort but lacks pace and fear factor for defenders.

Poor post that man.

Agree0 Disagree0

Can we ban posts like this? I understand different opinions but this is just spiteful and unsubstantiated!

When it gets to a stage where there is no logic and someone just being mean for no reason I think we should be able to mark off posts/posters we don't want to read!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - If I blocked all posts moaning about Liverpool p[layers and potential Liverpool players there would be very little traffic.}

Why do they need to replace his goals? Lambert is just as creative as Suarez, just as good from setpiece situations and with the right service would score at least a third of Suarez's goals from open play.

Borini if he stays would be used out wide. He is no good when he has players right on top of him. He needs to be able to have space so he can either collect the ball and run at people or make a darting run inside the full back and behind the central defenders. Down the middle he is literally just a poacher who has not yet pefected his positional sense. Therefore it is wiser he plays left wing so he can come in onto his stronger rightfoot.

Sturridge will get so much more service than last year now Suarez is gone. Suarez for all his assists wasted so many attacks by taking a bad touch or trying something silly and he still had a tendancy to shoot from ridiculous places (which is fine against Norwich!).

Sterling is the only one who may suffer as his understanding with suarez was excellent. However if Sterling wants to be regarded as a star player for us he needs to start taking on the role Suarez played for himself. He needs to go looking for the ball and dictating the attacks. He did that brilliantly for England which would suggest that when it is recquired of him, he can step up to the plate and play without Suarez which we are yet to see him do. You might remember that Sterling was not part of the team whilst Suarez was out banned for the bite so as I say, we're yet to see how he copes. He'll either flourish now he can be the main creative spark, or he'll capitulate. You've just got to have faith he flourishes.

Then you have the likely signing of Markovic who looks every bit a top prospect. He probably won't start many games but he has pace, flair and the ability to stretch teams if nothing else. this makes him perfectly suited to coming off the bench when teams are tired and doing damage; something we lacked last season due to Moses' horrific failure to adapt!

We also have youngsters like Ibe, Dunn and Wilson who might all be looknig for a chance to shine next year!

Even if Aspas stays and we don't sign another attacker, what's to say Aspas won't kick into life when he starts getting more gametime. The only thing he lacked was a bit of upper body strength. His movement, work and desire were spot on. He was just far too weak and that made him easy to defend against. I think he'll leave anyway and I wish him luck as he trained hard every week, never complained and was there cheering us on from the bench every single Saturday!

Why do we need to repalce Suarez's goals though? even if these players do not up there game and we score say 10-20 less than last season, I'd like to think we'd concede less with Mingolet, Flanno and Sakho all one year older and more experienced. I'd prefer it if Skrtel and johnson were repalced with Lovren and any above average left back. If they stay though, I'd be shocked if either had another season as bad as the one just gone. If we concede 10 less, we can afford to score less.

Don't forget though mate, Suarez scored over half and nearly a third of his goals against teams who finished in the bottom 4. He never really did it in the big games or even just against quality opposition like Newcastle or Southampton. It is seriously being over played how much we will miss him and I'm sure Rodgers is telling all the players that too. Suarez didn't come second, the team did. take Suarez out and just put in Lallana and I don't think it'd make that much difference. We will be improving multiple area's though so just wait and see before you over react.

Agree0 Disagree0

Your last two posts have been slating Borini. Has he had a go on your Mrs or something!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 12:47:01
Yes I seen all his penalty's for sunderland. He's good enough for them but not for Liverpool. Take off the blinker's you lot. Brenda is good at wasting money eg. aspas, borini, alberto. If you lot think borini is going to replace suarez your just kidding yourself's.
He's a pub team player at best.

Agree0 Disagree0

*over half and nearly two thirds* that was meant to say!

Agree0 Disagree0

"Lambert is just as creative as Suarez"

I'll have what you're having mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

I looked forward to reading that reply, but once I read the Lambert is as creative a the nutmeg king, I stopped

Agree0 Disagree0

I know you can't block them all ed but the ones that are just ridiculous and clearly just hatred for no reason against a player like? If someone's voicing an opinion fair enough but this is not even that!

Secretly I think you like the controversial slating gets as much people posting as anything else ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Last season Lambert got 10 assusts. Suarez got 13. Lambert played in a midtable team. Suarez played in a team who came second.

Lambert is just as creative. He just doesn't score as many because he doesn't have the individual brilliance to beat two players or score from outside the box regularly in open play.

But sure, childishly ridicule me making out I don't know what I'm talking about when I bet you were completely unaware of Lamberts creativity :)

11 Jul 2014 11:32:35
Just looked down the page and I want to ask, do you actually read the full post when people send it in?

I haven't read one post saying llanna is crap or decent but not good enough for Liverpool, yet your all posting saying you hope he rams the words of all the " HATER'S " down there throats etc etc, WTF are you all talking about, the only so called perceived negativity attached to him would be posters questioning the fee we paid which is not a criticism of him but the clubs transfer negotiators.

I have no opinion on Llanna because I've not seen enough of him, but hopefully he's fantastic.

I will give you all an opinion that you can moan about to your hearts content, Wilfred Bony, NO NO NO NO, he's not even in the one season wonder Benteke Michu bracket ( there both s***e btw ), he had half a decent season, and there's know way we will sign him.

p.s. here's another, people saying they want Lucas to stay, the most over rated player in our history, if we get offered £5 million I would snap there hands off.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jul 2014 11:43:41
Waro, have you heard anything about Bony signing or any transfer rumors?

I have to agree on Bony, I don't see what he adds to the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 11:49:37
Have you actually read the full posts?
Plenty of people have been slating Lallana and Lucas was very very good until his injuries.

Agree0 Disagree0

I read all of that post and was thinking "Well I don't agree with him but at least he is coherent and makes his point well"

Then you state that Lucas is the most overrated player in our history and I realise I may well have been listening to my left testicle for all the sense it makes.

How can people say that Lucas is overrated? He is not rated. by anyone! But still season after season he puts in solid dependable performances, which have only become less frequent recently because of injury.

Now I'm not saying he is the best player we've ever had, far far from it, but the guy would give his all for the club and is still hated by some blinkered cretins.

If he does leave then he will be missed, and I wish him all the best for the future, he deserves it for all he's done for the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

To be honest, I only agree with your P.S. sentence. None of us will ever know how good a signing will be for our team, so I think you have been unkind on Bony and Benteke. You can probably find statistics against them, but you can't prove that they will be bad in a Liverpool team. But I do agree that Lucas should be sold. He is not the success story that everyone seems to refer to, when an unknown player is signed. But that is just my own opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 12:13:20
You're truly clueless if you think Lucas is "the most over rated player in our history", quite the opposite. He's always had plastic fans like you digging at him and yet, before his latest injury, was one of the most vital components of our team. Over rated? More like under rated.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree that Bony shouldn't be an option. Decent player, but we are a champions league side now and we should aim our sights a bit higher. It doesn't even have to be a striker. I'd make Sturridge the main man and bring in quality players around him. James Rodriguez would be my choice (but it will never happen).

I also agree that it is time to move Lucas on. He hasn't been the same since his injury problems, and we need to bring in a solid defensive midfielder who will provide adequate cover for our defenders. From what I have seen of Emre Can, he is more of a central midfielder than a defensive one.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Warp
What a load of nonsense
Lucas Leiva did not perform that well at the end of the season but if Gerrard is injured he can play the defensive midfield role well for us
The most over rated player in our history! You either have a short memory or are just writing that to get a response
Lucas is an excellent professional that has only given his best every time he steps on the pitch
There are others in the current squad who would improve if they had his attitude
Paul Stewart, Julian dicks, aquilani. Remember them?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think you would be a mug to take £5 million for Lucas.

Agree0 Disagree0

Classic Waro that post. You are annoyingly consistent mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Surely Glen Johnson is the most overated player in our history - or are we just all in agreement that he is crap?

Agree0 Disagree0

Bony is good but I don't think he'd suit us. No confirmation of any interest though, it's just media guessing. The talks may have been on Swansea enquiring about our players.

Lucas was absolutely superb before his last injury and only half a player since. Still worth more like £10m and after a summers rest I'd be happy to give him one more season to see if he can return to form.

For me Benteke is frustratingly inconsistent and Michu is over-rated alright.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think both Cheryou and Biscan win the overrated player award.
The next Zidane and Biscan was the next 'someone amazing'

Lucas was one of our best the previous season and played well until injured in this past season

Agree0 Disagree0

This is getting hilarious now. Bony isn't hood enough yesterday he scores at rate that is better than 1 in 2 games. I thought we were trying to replace LS goals? The creativity is sorted. Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge & Markovich. If our 4 strikers next season are Sturridge, Bony, Lambert & Borini then we will be picking from a group of players that scored 73 (SEVENTY THREE) goals LAST season. I swear some people will complain about anything.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 11:28:59
Really struggling to get excited at the thought of Bony signing, all be it just rumours at the moment.

I will give him my support no probs, just don't think he's good enough.

Hope I'm wrong.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

To score 25 goals in all competitions in your debut season in England is a great acheivement.
Add to that it was in a struggling team who were in a relegation battle, and had their manager sacked midway through the season.

I think he could be an excellent signing.

Agree0 Disagree0

Watch his goal against man u and tell me he won't get 30 chances like that for Liverpool! Just trying to get you excited ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm on the fence on him. Either he becomes the new Drogba or the new Ivanho Heskey.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree with you Jay.
I think Bony is awesome and really skillful.
His backheel assist for De Guzman's goal against Norwich was pure class.
All this negativity because we haven't bought Lavezzi or Falcao or someone else who'd cost a fortune. It's just really depressing.
Yes we'll miss Suarez but we coped so well without him.
The relief that we're selling him and getting so much money in return is immense. He WILL do something stupid again and he WILL get banned for Barcelona.
I predict it will happen in the Champions League.

Hi Eds,

What do you think of these Benzema to Liverpool rumours? lazy journalism?

Or, do you think it could be true?

Will Real get Falcao?

Would you be happy with Bony, Markovic and Lallana as Luis's replacements?

Thanks, hope you day is sunny!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't expect Benzema's future to be decided until a replacement arrives and that is likely to be Falcao. I would not say the three players are a replacement for Suarez.}

Thanks Eds,

Would Benzema be keen on a move to Liverpool do you feel?

Would you say the 3 are an alternative then as we will never get a like for like with Luis.

I do like that BR is going for a English spine in the team. Munich have a german spine and the best Barca team had a spanish spine.

It was interesting to read about interest from Southampton and Stoke in Peter Gulasci after an excellent season at Salzburg. I always thought he was a good keeper, but his lack of chances meant he couldn't show it. It goes to show that maybe if we'd given him more of an opportunity we could have saved ourselves some dosh. I dunno if a buyback clause could have been arranged, but it might have proved useful in hindsight.

I don't understand why we're in for Bony. I thought it was part of Rogers philosophy to have a fluid, inter-changing attack. I thought there were more flexible options out there for the money being quoted. Sorry, i'm just finding our business a little baffling at times. The only club doing what Rodgers said he would do in the transfer market is Arsenal. Ok, bellyache over!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

At Swansea Rodgers had a front 3 of Dyer, Graham and Sinclair. There was nothing interchangeable about it. He has two wide players and a hold up forward you gave Sigurdson and co time to break forward and support the attack. He played a fluid front 3 last season because we had the players to do so. It doesn't always work though and was only made possible by the fact Suarez, Sterling and Sturridge were capable of doing it. It's easy to park the bus against though.

I would take Huntelaar or Bony. They're not my preferred choices and I doubt it's even Bony we're after, but Rodgers will just adapt the system against certain opposition to fit a more rigid player in.

Agree0 Disagree0

On the same page as you brother. I understand that we want to have a variety of options in attack for games when we are finding it difficult to break teams down like Chelsea at home last year. However this is what I thought was the primary reason of signing Lambert and I was very much keen on this idea. It seems now though as if Lambert is going to be back up to Bony and Sturridge, with the physical striker approach replacing the guile and creativity of Suarez.

I was under the influence that with Suarez leaving we could now play the 4-3-3 formation we appear to prefer, with a goal scoring winger (Sanchez) replacing his goals. I'm not sure why the highest goal scorers in the league (admittedly 30 down to Suarez) would think, 'we are doing something wrong, let's change our philosophy'. We don't even really play with out-and-out wingers who cross the ball regularly, so I can't quite understand the logic behind targeting Bony even though I do think he is a very good player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rogers has said all long we need a bigger squad with greater depth due to the increase in games next season, Arsenal have signed 1 player!

Admittedly Sanchez is a great player but I don't rate Debuchy, and other players linked to them such as Remy are not world class.

Our needs are different to Arsenals, as are the finances.

Agree0 Disagree0

Please watch bony play he doesn't get many goals from crosses! Even just watch his goals for Swansea last season! The one against man u sticks out when there was good link up play a ball through and a incredibly tidy finish which was not easy but he made look simple. he is a very technically good player and while I don't see him being number 1 striker or breaking scoring records I would bet any one on here that he will score over 15 goals without being a regular starter

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 12:29:05
Adam, BR has changed his methods from his Swansea days.

Agree0 Disagree0

AG Rodgers has changed his methods about 4 times since then! He went from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 to 3-5-2 to 5-4-1 to4-4-1-1 to 4-1-2-1-2! what's to say he isn't looking to change it again? He is a great manager because he doesn't stand still. We are nearly impossible to tactically counter against because you never know what's coming! I think he wants options to change the formation as and when he pleases. Not like for like replacements for a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 13:53:02
Yes that is what I meant.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post EMS, we will need a much bigger squad for this coming season, it is clear, we had to sell LS, it is also clear that we want to go far in all four compitions, thus needing more options, which is why I would like Bony at our club, he would get us 15 to 20 goals, doesn't get injured, and has stated that he wants to play for us, he just got a couple of goals in the World Cup, the price is right, and he def would be a plan B, anyway, I trust in Brendan Rogers . ynwa .

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 11:04:44
I personally think Liverpool over achieved slightly last season in that we was fortunate with our injuries, (nothing major) our lack of competitions, (no Europe) and the best season out of both our strikers. Not to be pessimistic but unless these 20 year old signings (markovic and can) can hit the ground running I struggle to see us replicating last season. Especially with champions league in the mix as well as no Suarez. I haven't even taken other teams around us all signing top la liga stars in to consideration either! (Fabregas, Costa, Sanchez and Herrera). Hopefully who ever Suarez's replacement is will do the business fingers crossed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jul 2014 11:21:06
We were fortunate with injuries? We had Suarez suspended, Sturridge missed games and was carrying an injury, we were without Gerrard in the middle of the season, no Enrique, no Allen for most of the season, Sakho injured, Cissokho did his hamstring on his debut, Agger missed loads of games hence Skrtel getting another chance.
I would not say forutnate.
We have strengthened enormously with Can, Lallana, Lambert and (fingers crossed) Markovic. If we get another striker then great but if we don't then we can cope. Rodgers is the best manager in the league.
Have faith
I wouldn't cal that

Agree0 Disagree0

You can't be a fan surely?

Overachieve? I think we done well because the way Rodgers has put the way he wants to play across - We seen glimpses not last season but the one before where the 1st half we struggled whilst he was putting ideas across but then second half I think we only lost 4 games so last season it was all prepared to do well so I think you're completely wrong here sorry mate - Also other teams signing top players? Fabregas - I would say past his best / Costa yes good goal scorer but who knows what he will be like in the premier league / Sanchez - I personally think will struggle with the physicality and Herrera = Please explain where you're evaluation is of this guy being world class - If he was that great one of the spanish giants would of had him as they always do

Agree0 Disagree0

Flidby hit the nail on the head.
You can't be a proper fan if you think we had no injuries, you clearly didn't watch any games or even follow our club.
Injuries last season:
Lucas
Sturridge
Gerrard
Sakho
Allen
Cissokho
Enrique
Johnson
Coutinho
Agger

Suspension
Suarez
Henderson

Agree0 Disagree0

No way Overachieved! Our pattern of play was the best to watch throughout the league and we will see the same this year with perhaps more muscle.

Agree0 Disagree0

Our squad is small I think we can all agree. Manchester United suffered an injury to both Rooney and van persie at the same point in the season and look where they finished. Can you imagine if that had happened to us last season?! Aspas up front. Its not a secret that our squad on the whole is weaker than chelsea and Manchester City. Rodgers knows this, that's why we've been linked with dozens of players all playing in different positions. Of course we haven't spent as much as them but we are still competiting for the same prize. don't get me wrong I loved our starting 11 last season. It was the second best in league

Agree0 Disagree0

Normally I'd say your entitled to your opinion. However when you write such utter rubbish, I don't think you are mate!
Injuries and suspensions throughout the season. Some atrocious refereeing as well!
On top of that we finished second and dominated the top teams. Accomplishment is a more accurate word to describe last season!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 10:40:32
Can I just post a fair question?

Why when we sign a player do people start saying why weren't other top teams in for him?

At this moment in time if we went for a player where all the top clubs wanted to sign him we would have 0% chance of signing them and we would end up with no player.

What frustrates me more is that when we did lose out on the player we would then slate the transfer committee and Ian ayre who seems to be the cause of world war 2 and global warming at this stage?

If I'm missing something I honestly would like to know because at the moment I am just not getting this attitude?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jul 2014 11:20:45
I agree with this post although I don't think too highly of Ian Ayre but I think we need to look at Suarez - why weren't all the big teams in for him and look at the success he became

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2014 11:39:50
Which players are you talking about Shane?

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't say Suarez is the best example because we have seen why other sides weren't in for him.
The likes of Coutinho and Sturridge show us why it doesn't matter who else is in for a player.
I do think that after last January with Salah, the failure to land Konoplianka and last summer with Mkhitaryan questions have to be asked. Yes you can argue that we got on okay without those signings but I think the manner of our transfer dealings had to be addressed.

Agree0 Disagree0

When we missed out on mikhitarion willian and even Sanchez three players who just chose other club's over us Liverpool were slated.

I've also read if emre can is such a prospect why weren't top clubs in for him.

Same with Lambert no one else seemed to want him.

And even lalanna who is constantly referred to as a one season wonder or a 10-15 mill player when he has been quality for years and Ross McCormack just went for 11 million!

Finally very few people question spending the same amount on markovic who has had 1 season at Benfica but he is going to be the world's best. and the people that do question it again are asking why did Chelsea not want him so there must be something wrong with him?

I would just prefer us to be happy with the fact that we are getting players especially ones with class and or potential!

Agree0 Disagree0

Shane can't help but agree. It's the foreign are best syndrome again.

Re-name some players e.g.
Ads Lallaninho the brazilian sensation has just broken into the national side. He also has EPL experience. Last season he tore defences apart and captained his team to a very respectable place. He finished the season with 9 goals and six assists from mid-field.

People would be drooling simply because he sounds a bit Pele, and isn't English! Utterly ridiculous to have a pop over transfer fees, all English players are over priced! Doesn't change the fact he is a quality player bought as a experienced and ready for the first team.

Seriously fed up with reading the same nonsense from deluded fans on here, 'we need to sign World Class players', 'we should be signing Hummels, Sanchez, Reus', 'we shouldn't be selling our best players'. When have Liverpool ever gone out and signed the creme de la creme of world football, when have we ever been trying to sign the best player/s in the world, competing with Real and Barca for their signatures? We never have and hopefully we never will, I love Liverpool the way we are and the way we have been! WE MAKE STARS! Always have and always will!
Who was Keegan before we signed him, who was Rush, who was Torres, who was Mascherano, who was Alonso, who was Suarez, Arbeloa (not world class I know but still moved on to real), Owen, McManaman (not signed, I know, but nurtured by us), the list goes on and on? They were talented players who were not the finished article, who we took a gamble on and nurtured their talent and turned them into 'World Class' players! Unfortunately when you make 'World Class' players, other teams take note and want to sign them, and as has been the way pretty much since football began, signing for Real and Barcelona is pretty much the pinnacle of a footballers career, and virtually none turn it down!
Yet for some reason so many of you numpies out there think the club is being poorly run and that we will slump next season because we aren't signing these supposed 'World Class' players!
The signings of Can, Origi and Markovic could prove to be complete and utter disasters, and if they are you will all come out of the woodwork and criticise BR for signing them. But they could also prove to be masterstrokes if they fulfil their potential and turn out to be the next Schweinsteiger, Thierry Henry or Christiano Ronaldo, I bet if they do none of you will be complaining and saying BR should never have signed them! But the fact that so many of you are writing them off before they have even kicked a ball for us and before you have even seen them play properly is pathetic!
We are not and never will be Real Madrid or Barcelona and I am glad of that. I fell in love with Liverpool because they are Liverpool, I love the way we do things our way and I don't want us to turn into Real or Barca! Support the club. Support the players that wear the Liverbird upon their chests!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Fair point, but, while I understand the clubs limitations and the fact it still isn't easy to attract 'World Class Players' it seems since the Premier League era began we have been losing our best players eventually, never being able to fully continue our good runs. What I'm saying is for where we want to be we need to retain our best players and add other players, when needed, to continue our success.

{Ed002's Note - It is difficult to say what opportunities Teixeira will get - perhaps something in the early rounds of the league cup. Only now will the club be starting to figure out loan options - we will need to see what happens.}

Id like to see Jordan Ibe more in the team,

Eds does it look like he will be or is he looking to be loaned out?

{Ed002's Note - It is very early to say about loans but Derby has shown an interest in taking him.}

Soul destroying & defeatist are 3 words that spring to mind, and no i'm not going on about when I listen to Coldplay on my own in my room, its when i'm reading some of the un-logical posts that seemingly Liverpool fans are famous for, whilst listening to Coldplay alone in my room. Even when I go to the pub or get into work on a Monday morning, I'm filled with excitement to tell my colleagues 'Oh, we are signing so or so' and the glares I get, you'd think I just killed a baby. 'Who the'ells that? pfft probably rubbish' or 'Lallana, over paid British waste, probably another Downing'. Ummm short term memory my mucka's? We finish frikking 2nd last year and we are signing a lot of quality young stars in the making on top of proven Premier League quality what the hell is there to moan about? People whined and cried over us signing Coutinho, people called Sturridge a stupid buy and this, THIS all before they kicked a football. Before we assassinate our players, shall we give them the chance to kick a ball first? Hey, you might be surprised. In my opinion, there was a bad apple at camp who has been removed and trust me, TRUST ME all players are replaceable. I was a victim of this when Torres left, absolutely devastated I was, kicked a few wardrobes and punched a few pillows but then, we signed a Zues, a Goliath in Andy Carrroll, the rest is history he was absolutely crap. But that's not my point, we have a manager who is doing exceptionally well, the players need our support more than anyone so let's get behind them! As my mother always said to me, you can go into work with a frown or you can go into work with a smile on your face, it doesn't cost you anymore to smile and it will probably make you feel better too. The same applys for us fans, SMILE, WE ARE LIVERPOOL

Ed001, what is your opinion on us signing Wilfried Bony? Do you think he is (1) the best option out there and (2) the type of player we should be going after?

Personally, I think neither.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - 1) No 2) No. But he is a very good player, it is just I don't see how he would fit with our team. I wouldn't be upset if we signed him, just not convinced we should be looking to add him.}

I agree, I like him, I think he's a good player but I don't want him.

Exactly my thoughts. Bony, and now Remy are good players but in a way we already have similar players in Lambert and Sturridge and I don't see Bony or Remy adding anything extra to the team.

It is really strange to me that we are not going for a creative forward.

Hi eds, reds
I haven't posted for donkeys but was reading some of the posts and wanted to put my 2 pennies worth . Look for those of you out there who believe that only buying the "world class players" is the way forward well your wrong . Just take a look at Germany . There team is full of hard working players who are quality but not the most skillul . It's the way they play as a team . Constantly pressing making teams make mistakes then have the speed to counter attack in seconds . And if you look right now at LFC we are picking up players who have the energy/speed to do the same . I am going to miss Suarez but it's gone now instead of relying on him and studge let's get more goals shared around the rest of the squad .

I agree with the principle but Germany isn't the best of examples. They arguably have the best go in the world as well as the best left back as well as the all time World Cup top goal scorer they have Kroos who is one of the biggest prospects in world football and although I don't rate him myself many would argue that Ozil is world class to and that's only naming a few members of the squad a better example would of been the Chileans although of you look at them you can argue that they over achieved which isn't really what I would want Liverpool to be compared to.

Agree0 Disagree0

Get what you are saying but Germany are full of world class players
Who isn't? Neuer, Lahm, Kroos, Reus, Hummels. could go on.
Didn't Klose just become the highest scoring player in WC history?

They are all top draw players, that's why they stuffed Brazil and will probably win the World Cup.

They are all playing CL football each season and winning titles. But we don't need that type of player?

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree. Suarez gone now so we adapt (we need to forget about him). I actually think we'll be more cohesive now that he's no longer at LFC. We'll get the goals to win games from many more of our players rather then relying on 2 or3 as we did for most of last season. We are buying players that will fit our system, and we'll be very good. They may not be the 'marquee' signings everyone wants (though I think LFC will pull 1 or 2 out of the bag that catches the everyone by surprise), but we'll be fine.

Forget Sanchez, he (or his missus) preferred London, oh well.

On another note, I see the bookies are at it already, they have Manc City, Manc U, Chelsea and Arsenal (because of the purchase of Sanchez) as the top 4, not necessarily in that order. Thinks it's harsh on BR, they are making out that because Suarez is no longer at LFC, we'll be out of the top 4. At the start of last season, I predicted to family and friends that we'd be 1st or 2nd, they didn't believe me. It may be harder next season, but I believe we'll be there again. I'm going for a top 2 finish again, though hopefully, we can go all the way too top spot.

I have to agree to a certain extent with Jamesee. Germany and the players Crunch have mentioned are world class. NOW! They didn't used to be. They have grown and developed.
We are developing and growing, and whose to say in a few years Sturridge, Sterling, Flanno, Ibe et al are not going to be right up there?

We are now playing CL football for the first time in years, another point Crunch makes.

Give it time, trust what LFC are doing. We have done so well last year, we now need to build on that.

My view anyway. :o)

My opinion. Do the scouts of Spurs just follow what we do in the transfer target market.? If you read the BBC gossip pageS AGAIN today AND other medias it says LFC are after X and so are Spurs. LFC look to up their bid for Y and Spurs hold an interest. Spurs are looking to knock LFC off the interest of X LFC have upped their bud for Y but Spurs are willing to match???

Do they not have good enough thoughts on individuals without having to find out what other teams are planning to go after?

Spur's fans could make the same point too.

Agree0 Disagree0

Or maybe its spurs are shopping in the same market as us so the press constantly link us with them for signings its a bit asinine to think baldini and mopo are sat arround reading the daily rags going lfc in for him maybe we should bid too although it does seem like every player were linked with spurs are too maybe its levys new masterstroke to save a few pennys he's hired the water gate burglars to nip in to ian ayres office to steal the scouting files and his after lunch hobnobs move the furniture around make him think he's going nuts and make some scandelously low bids for players pause for thought

Agree0 Disagree0

They are desperate to be us, to have our success.
Apparently copying is the best form of flattery.
I like the way little Tottenham try to be a big club, makes me smile

Agree0 Disagree0

Well they were certainly interested in bony before us well as far as reports go and loveren is probably because of the manager. apart from that we are on a similar level in terms of buying opportunities with spurs. the same way man city real Madrid and Barcelona get linked with a lot of the same players

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask exactly what type of player is markovic because to be honest I've never seen a benfica match and YouTube can make anyone look good. What's his game like and is he first team quality?

And Eds and I know you don't like to discuss finances, so is there any article or maybe even a book that explains football finances in detail since this interests me a lot.

Anyways, I'd just like to say to keep the positivity out there. Lallana is a world class signing, and Lambert is a bargain. Emre Can looks exiciting and suited to the premier league unlike our previous signings, Aspas and Alberto, who posters are comparing to Emre can. I honestly am not heartbroken by Suarez leaving, I'd rather not have myself pissing my pants in the worry that he might bite once again and end up getting banned from life.

One last thing. I don't understand a lot of posters here. It seems like they don't know how to be a supporter of this great club. I for one would back and get fully behind any player signed, even if it was Fred. What's thenfun of supporting your club when you're rubbish scared of what might happen even before a ball is kicked. So my message to all the fans out there, KEEP THE FAITH.
And to all Liverpool players and potential signings, YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - a good start to learning about football finances would be to read a blog called Swiss Ramble. It is an excellent blog and one I recommend to everyone. Oh and no, it is nothing to do with the sites, it is just an excellent blog and one I read through myself when I get the chance.}

Good post apart from the Fred thing! He would drive me bananas if he signed! Odd that he was actually deemed a very good player a few years back! Completely agree with the support though! Price tags are just another reason to slate a player before they've signed! If it's too high we overpaid too low and they're obviously crap. and even with a fair decent fee its why weren't other top clubs in for him?

Thanks Ed001 for the blog link. I read it and found it to be eye opening. Really helpful.

I'd be happy if we signed Wilfried Bony, a powerhouse striker that can score goals, and prior to joining Swansea he scored 31 goals in the league for Vitesse so he knows about scoring 30 or more goals and with the chances lfc creates he'd do wonders just need a quality winger to pin in crosses plus the danger he'd provide in set pieces with his aerial ability.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I live in Swansea and at the start of last season after watching Bony in pre season games I bet my mate that he wouldn, t get into double figures in the premier league. First half of the season my bet looked a cert, but the second half he was superb after getting to grips with the pace of the prem. I had to pay out ( but his goals kept us up). Not sure whether he would fit in with Brendan's style

rumours of interest I Jackson Martinez been linked with top clubs for years don't realy no how good he is?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I honestly think he is one of the most overrated players in world football at the moment. just my opinion but from watching him a lot I would never class him as a world class striker more so the kind of player a team like west ham or Aston villa would take a chance on

First of all great work eds and fair play with the info for months now that Luis was going to leave even though the abuse for this was unreal! Just a quick question do u expect a striker in to replace Suarez?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I expect Rodgers to prioritise a wide forward and a left back first. So probably not, at least not this summer.}

11 Jul 2014 08:18:25

I like Rojo at LB

Hi eds. Was wondering that if we get a large sum upfront for Suarez. Could this be used for the money Seville was asking upfront for a deal with Moreno? Would we still be interested in getting him. In my opinion he I still the best left back that we have had any serious link with.
Thanks Craig

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no idea sorry.}

10 Jul 2014 22:21:29
Eds. Jack Dunn, you guys report any info on him for the next season?
Could he figure in preseason or is it too soon?
Is he looking ready for first team action?

I read he has good goals per game, unless I've got that wrong?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he should feature in preseason, he is another one of those that suffered a serious injury or he would already be either in the team or gone by now. As we have seen with Flanno, it is possible for them to come back from a very serious injury and win a place in the team. Dunn is a tricky forward who could very easily do well, though he could just as easily flop. Under normal circumstances I would expect him to get a loan to show what he can do, but his injury history might preclude him from a loan away. Just so we can better monitor him and make sure he isn't being trained in ways that might damage him.}

Thanks Ed001. Fingers crossed for him then. IF he were to not succeed, do we have any forward players ready to step up? I remember Yesil had injuries too.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - well hopefully Borini, there is also Ibe, could always push Teixeira in behind the forward line too. There are always a number of options, Markovic can play centrally for instance.}

Yeah, I really like Borini. Great vision, glad we have him and I hope he gets his chance.
Ibe looked great in that game towards the end of the previous season and then this recent preseason game

Hope Texiera gets further action. I know he's not a forward, but also hope Ilori stays and plays too

I can't wait for llalana to have an amazing season for us just so he can shut up all the critics on here. You should be happy the club are willing to invest this much money into players, especially when they are taking what I perceive as a smart approach to the market. Honestly, if Liverpool don't make the champions league next year (even though I hope they will) it won't be the end of the world. League table position and cup titles are nice but I enjoy just watching the team play every weekend. Let's just get behind the players and manager and let everything else take care of itself.

With you on that, hope he settles in to our system quickly and shuts up the moaners

Agree0 Disagree0

With you brother.

Agree0 Disagree0

Me too. The beauty of football is not knowing what's going to happen. Just enjoy the ride as we all did last year. Lallana doubters can doubt . They just don't get he's a major signing. Look at the company he was in for goals, assists and chances created last season in the toughest league week in, week out. And if he did that getting subbed every game he packed it into less time on the pitch! Last season we got a great start, built momentum, had few distractions and had the best player in the league. So it's logical that we will find it tougher this year. Let's see how the team that thrilled us last year copes. And before a ball is kicked just chill out. Stop worrying about what other teams are doing. Support the manager, players and team we have. Sermon over!

Don't want to slate players before they join but I'd be gutted if Bony replaces Suarez. Just can't see how he'd fit our system to be honest.
I don't think he's a bad player or anything just not in the same league as Suarez and not the type of player who'd settle particularly well into our front line.
We don't play the long ball unless it's in behind for Sturridge or Sterling to run onto, don't cross particularly often either. I know you adapt your tactics to suit the players you have but would he be the player to change our whole system for. I'd love Benzema, although perhaps he's a little too similar to Sturridge, and think he'd be much more suited.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He doesn't have to suit our system. The whole point is to have options. At the minute we gave Sturridge who as you say is an off the shoulder forward who likes getting in behind, we have Lambert who is a false 9 and drops deep to allow the wide forwards to break inside, we have Borini who is better as a wide forward and then we have Aspas who is probably leaving. Aside from that, all our other striking options are kids.

Bony is a completely different proposition to defend against. He is a powerhouse of a forward very much in the Drogba mould (who btw top scored the Premier league in a 4-1-2-1-2 formation under Ancelotti). He is not like Lukaku or Benteke as he has a decent first touch, technical ability and is a little bit better in the air. He's probably not quite as strong but he is a tad quicker I think. I don't see the problem with Bony IF we are interested. How can you say we don't cross it? We scored more goals from set pieces last year than any other team in the league! Skrtel, Agger, Suarez, Sturridge, Sakho and even Gerrard all scored a goal of sone kind from a set piece. We do cross it, just not in open play that often which doesn't suit Bony anyway. He isn't the sort to run into the box to get on the end of a cross. He scores virtually all his headers from set pieces. Most of his goals and scored from neat build up play with a tidy finish at the end of it, or picking up the ball with his back to goal before turning and driving 10-15yards and unleashing a powerful low pile driver.

It's not always about fitting the system. Bony would give us 3 different options up front in Lambert, Sturridge and Bony who are all completely different but could all be incorporated into a fluent pass and move style. The other option is Huntelaar who is a mere poacher who is deadly in the box but aside from that is just a hold up player. Again another completely different player and perhaps Rodgers wants both! It's a squad game and you need alternative options. Not like for like subs.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with both posts here,
@toddythered I agree in the fact we all know we play quick sharp attractive football and is Bony going to maybe slow that down but EMS is also right - I think last year we really struggled to have that person on the bench to make a difference and give defenders something different to think about unless sterling or coutinho started on the bench - I think we need to realize if Suarez goes then we are not going to replace him like for like and this is why Barca are paying the price they are paying for him so a good squad and options will be the best bet for us I think

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree EMS. Quality answer

Didn't we look at signing Lovren, and Bony before they signed for Southampton and Swansea? why didn't we buy them then, when they were half the money being asked now? I hope we do still buy them as I thought then they would be good signings and still do, they will make us stronger, go get them Brendon!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Because it would be a gamble. We gambled on Aspas and others last season, Swansea and Saints gambled on Lovren and Bony. Sometimes gambles paid off and sometimes they don't. Less of a gamble is buying someone who has already proved themselves in our league, but that does push the price up.

BTW, we gambled £22m on a player with no EPL experience and he's yielding us a return of roughly 3-times his cost. Chelsea gambled on, for example, Shevchenko and lost a bomb, United gambled on (amongst others) Veron, Kleberson, Bebe and got them wrong. But they certainly got Ronaldo right.

We can't win em all.

Agree0 Disagree0

Often do that. Could be wrong but I thought Bony had a trial at LFC?

It can be frustrating, but I guess at the time he they didn't fit or a target higher up the list was signed?
