Is it just me, but being a red since 1974, growing up I never recall the pre-season debate of "well make 4th", "we r no better then 8th" etc etc, you just looked for key fixtures, were just excited to see us play again, score again. You start the season trying to win every game and add the points up after the last kick of the last game and see where we got. (Quote KD), can't we discuss ok transfers that's the way world now, but more, who we think will have a good season?, who concerns us, what wrongs from last season we hope too right, and get positive, rather then arguing about where we will finish before a ball has even been kicked.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said Eddie I'm with you brother. Been following the lads nearly as long and that is the mentality we were brought up on. Never really thought about the result or formation at all. Just wanted to see the lads play.

Got a ticket for the game Saturday so can't wait.

Agree0 Disagree0

Great post, this is how every fan should approach the matches, get behind the team

Agree0 Disagree0

Been a red a tad longer, not that it matters, but can remember when it was a shock to draw a game and losing was unthinkable!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers, Eddie! I predict we would do much better against Stoke for the opener. Mark Hughes does love a bit of football in his team, clearly its English styled but as long as Agger, Toure, Lucas and Mignolet are revved up, we should be winning by 2-0.

Enrique and Johnson will have a field day but they will hit us bad on the counter using fast wingers and crosses.

Heard there is also a closed-door friendly. Any idea who we're up against?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 23:29:28
hi eds. just wondering. I don't think agger would consider leaving but say for example he wanted to leave and rodgers felt the time was right. could there be any chance in a swap plus cash deal for mascarano. obviously cash would come in our direction. would work out ok considering mascarano can also play cb as well as the anchor man. {Ed002's Note - I really have no idea. Have you spoken to any professional about these ideas you are having.}

Hi all

What's with the negative vibes we lost one game and most people are saying the signings are crap, this is the same team that won all the other pre season games, we will win some lose some and draw but have faith and back the team don't slaughter them.
We played well against Celtic the mistake cost us the game all it is we have to make sure we learn from our mistakes
I know we all want a marquee signing but that won't happen over night, that will happen when we start getting top 4 finish I'm sure the club is trying there best to sign players
Just remember what mess we were in prior to FSG taking over so give them credit
Who agrees

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The other teams suck though.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2013 09:25:34
CC that is disrespectful BS, complete BS.
Olympiakos was much better than Celtic. We were much better than Celtic. Stop being a fickle person riding the negative bandwagon after losing a friendly played for conditioning and match fitness only!

21 days left in the transfer window! getting almost panic time be interesting to see what happens and who goes where. hopefully we get some good deals in this week so we don't impulse buy!

We are in a ware position than last season.

If anyone thinks we will be anywhere near the top 4 must be seriously deluded!

This is going to be a season of real disappointment.

Players not coming in, players wanting out, a manager that is so full of cliches and is clearly out of his depth.

I don't want to be negative but don't expect anything but midtable mediocrity this season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

"I don't want to be negative"
I have had a really gloomy depressing day, but that cheered me up endlessly!

Agree0 Disagree0

If you can't support the team then do one . Cork
YNWA
Jamesee

Agree0 Disagree0

Wow M1- you are a little ray of sunshine

PS: M1 You've failed - you were negative!

Agree0 Disagree0

Serisouly you must be having a bad day! :(

I hate to tell you but your post is rather negative! I also think we will struggle to make top 4 but still love this team and will support them through thick and thin. I honestly never thought 2-3 seasons ago though that we would come close to top 4 for 5-10 years but now feel like we are absolutely on right track. Maybe we won't make it now but soon we could.

Please do not forget our previous owners and some of the purchases we made pre BR and even PRE Hodgson. we were going backwards!

The only players also that want to leave the club as far as I know are Suarez and Coates. 1 I can't blame as never played much and the other is a brain dead person. but also as Carra said currently maybe too good for LFC current team, though I do feel he owes us a huge apology?

But for me and most others I love this club and am just pleased to see it move in the right direction.

History moves and changes all the time also and we cannot thick LFC are owed greatness or that we would be the best team for ever, it will also move and change. We have a great history but now we need to move forward and slowly build greatness again. hopefully we can

Agree0 Disagree0

As per Gareth there are 2 players who want out and 1 is because he isn't getting games the other is a DF. And M1 you're deluded yourself we'll b 6th at least not any lower and certainly not around 10th

Agree0 Disagree0

In my view top 2 will be between Chelsea and City

3rd/4th and 5th: between United, Spurs and Arsenal

6th/7th and 8th: between Liverpool, Swansea and Everton

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2013 09:35:14
Absolutely shocking, clueless and fickle! This is the same team which was 3rd in the form table since January and have replaced some "bad" unwanted players with true class. Iago Aspas is fantastic, so is Toure & Migs. Everton & Swansea? Wow, how fickle are you. BEHAVE or stop posting if you have no clue about Football.
Swansea will have a newcastle like season. I don't give a hoot who they signed, just like when newcastle signed all those players last Jan. And still almost got relegated, you would have thought the hype on here about the carp they bought made them any better? Nonsense. Everton? SHOCKING again.

Please do us all a favour M, we know you are a bitter blue, stop posting and pretending to be A Liverpool supporter. YOU ARE NOT.

Hello Eds. A quick question if you don't mind and sorry if asked before.

I said a while back that I would love to see Honda come to LFC and one of the Eds and several supporters told me he had signed for AC milan (i think AC) but then I believe this proved premature. Do you know if he has signed for a team or will do?

thanks {Ed002's Note - He has agreed to join in January but attempts to get him earlier are not working out.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thanks Eds for clearing that up, appreciate it. I was hoping you would say he is no longer going and wants LFC only etc etc

hi edds, has anyone shown an interest in dhiego martins of south china? seems a quality player and still only 24 although he's playing in a terrible league {Ed002's Note - Let's assume not.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2013 21:44:20
Ed's I know we've been over Eriksson a million times but can you confirm if we were interested someone said we'd agreed terms with his agent, if so that would mean he must of been interested in a move? {Ed002's Note - It is true if you are an AC Milan supporter.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2013 21:43:14
Eds do we actually still have offers on the table for either Alderweireld or Eriksen?

I remember you saying we had placed an offer for Eriksen, and that we walked away from the original value for Alderweireld, but is there an actual offer for either from us at present that the two players would have already seen?

Jonesred {Ed002's Note - You are correct that I said LFC walked away from the original price for him. There is nothing on the table from Liverpool for either.}

I am beginning to hate the transfer window, confused by constant newspaper headlines linking us with every tom, dick and harry, snippets of mis-information that raises my hopes only for them to be dashed a few day's later, feeling frustrated at losing players that would be good for us, it's driving me mad, is it any wonder fans get their posts wrong when all they have to form an opinion is what they gather from the internet and newspapers, who have an agenda to make up stories to sell papers! I posted a few nervous thoughts earlier, not surprising really, I will wait till the end of the window and also see what team BR puts out and go from there, I hope it works out for us.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2013 21:57:12
Hope we sign another CB before the season starts although seems unlikely now, would be very happy with sakho though my top choice is still papadopolous but it's clear we don't want to pay the price being asked, I'm not concerned with alderwierald as I believe we would have bid by now if we really wanted him the price is low IMO. The club was a bit hasty in sending robbo out on loan because it seems like we are struggling to secure LB cover the defence needs sorting first we can last for a while longer searching for the right replacement for Suarez.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2013 21:54:01
Suarez has said he will NOT apologise.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What a shock!

12 Aug 2013 07:47:49
Y u shocked, He believes what he said is right, and he doenst want here.
Lets all contribute to 2 mill and hand over to either him or the cluba dn let's sell him.
Pls. Other are laughing at us.
Its becoming true, Suarez is becoming biggger than the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry, I for one certainly wouldn't be willing to contribute to Suarez he can go FSG himself. He needs to hand in a TR and shut his trap.

We can only sell him when we receive the offers. The only club which have bid so far are Arsenal and we would be an even bigger laughing stock if we had accepted £40m + £1. Accepting that would be caving into his petty demands and antics it would effectively be the club bending over and taking one from Suarez.

Tony barrett reports that we are close to a deal for siquiera (spelling) 5 million the reported fee and that agger is considering a move to barcelona via his agent

Ian the red

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It doesn't say that at all, why do people twist things? It states that Barca have bid and Liverpool have rejected it, nowhere does it say that a move is being considered. It's posts like this that wind people up.

Agree0 Disagree0

If Tony Barrett says we are close to signing someone, then you can pretty much guarantee it won't happen - don't think he's ever been right about anything LFC.

Agree0 Disagree0

Scouse_tommy thanks for your reply mate, I included Van Wolfswinkel because I could spell his name LOL! seriously, because he was a goalscorer and in the right price bracket, I was thinking more about Soldado when I posted.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 21:45:40
players that would have been good buys for Liverpool have not been bought but have gone to other clubs, Bony, Van Wolfswinkel, Soldado. if BR knew Suarez was going to turn on us why did he not take action?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Seriously!
Mate Vanwolfswinkel was scouted in depth by 2 of the top italian clubs and a number of spanish clubs at least one Bundesliga club and a number of English clubs. The only club that wanted him was Norwich! If all those scouts and managers thought he was a Person why do you think he would have been a great buy?

1. Astoria.
2. Papadopulos.
3. Matri.
4. Alderweireld.
5. Sahko.

Jonesred {Ed002's Note - I can 100% assure you that Matri will not be Liverpool's centre back next season.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

My mistake sorry Ed. have never seen Matri or Astoria play. Italian league not my bag.

Who do you think would be most likely from the four?

Jonesred {Ed002's Note - I can't do most likely.}

11 Aug 2013 21:28:54
If Brendon think's we will get top four without making the top quality signings we were promised and that Suarez will apologise and all will be well again then we are in trouble, I wish I had his faith, but I fear we will repeat last season without a striker that scares the S**t out of defenses, and a centre back that is good in the air, that can read the game as well as Carra to snuff out danger, I am not convinced with the present team, hate to say it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sturridge will put away more chances than Suarez will.
Toure will fill the void left by carra at least for this season.
You need to stop being a little bitch and support the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

MIKEY1985 I need to support the team do i? I have supported the team for 55 years mate, travelled Europe supporting the team, if I have an opinion and or some reservations I will express them, I would walk through fire for the team, so don't give me that blind faith rubbish!

How can u fickle fans writes off Top 4 spot before the Season begins after losing a Pre-season Friendly. I think we are not far off from title challange never mind Top 4. The squad needs few additions in DM, CB, LB and Wings. Every team going to play with 11 Players and on every Match day the team with better tactics will won the match. Consider the Manchester city, who had very quality squad for last 2 season and eventually sent pack in group stages. The consistency is the main attribute we have to had and if we had consistency we would be in top 4 last season itself

Grow Up! Support the club through thick and thin.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We are supporting the club and some don't think we will make the top four me included. There is excellent cause to think that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very sensible post harisengg - we need to get ready for the negative posts when we concede/lose. or last season where fans questioned formation/timing of substitutions - I think we can progress this season - I can see two more additions before the end of the window - but may not be spectacular WE ARE LIVERPOOL - BRING ON STOKE!

Agree0 Disagree0

"The squad needs few additions in DM, CB, LB and Wings."

So only 5 additions to the first 11.

Agree0 Disagree0

These posts are just as bad as the negative mid table posts. 5 signings but you think we could challenge for the title, that's not optimism that's just blind faith. Realistically I see us finishing 6th but we have a chance of finishing 4th. We are much better than 10th yes but we are miles from challenging.

How long before we get a Suarez update from the man himself when he's away on international duty? What do you reckon eds? Will we send an official over with him to watch what he says? Cheers guys {Ed002's Note - For the sake of the club, I truly hope he says no more on the matter. I explained pre break that the club should have babysat him then, if they had done that (which was discussed in the States) we would likely not be where we are now.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed no 2 that you did but can I ask if some one was with him why do you think it wouldn't of happened do you think some one got to Suarez to push a transfer
What I am trying to say is surely he would of spouted to the media sooner or later
Lurgan red {Ed002's Note - He is dumb as a box of rocks. That is the reason.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Your absolutely right Ed, he has less intelligence than things living at the bottom of ponds, by some margin.

Hi would one of the eds be so kind to reply as to the nature and extent of skrtels injury as I understood he was close to leavingor perhaps he is only here until agger recovers. Also coates seems to have slipped below wisdom in pecking order but no interest in him. We seem content on letting players leave before replacements are secure strange {Ed002's Note - Until the club say anything about it no one will know. Ed001 has climbed the fence at Melwood before and tried to examine the players himself, but the court order means he cannot do that any longer.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You can not win with the replacing before someone leaves or vice versa as if the player does not leave then you are stuck with two (Reina, although I know he is on loan) or if you let them leave before you replace you could be caught short (Carroll). While we sit on the outside as 'experts' on what should or shouldn't be done, it is all far more complicated than most of us realise.

Andy K

Agree0 Disagree0

Carra 's not fast now! my Mum is faster and she 's 91'! but he used to be quick and was always quick in dealing with danger, which is part of my point, thanks anyway Andy.

11 Aug 2013 20:54:59
Suarez is gone as far as I can see, we must sign another top striker now! a deadly poacher who rarely misses or can cause chaos and panic, who when he gets the ball you think "here we go" without Suarez we don't have that feeling, if we don't buy someone in this window to replace him we will be lucky to get 6th, I don't think Suarez will say he's sorry he will not play for us again, we also need to buy a defender who is fast, can read the game, and snuff out the danger like Carra used to, I haven't seen that since he left, teams like Swansea and Southampton will give us trouble again this season, add that to the top 6 and you will see how much we need those signings.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Did you say "a defender who is fast. like Carra"? Jamie is many things, fast is not currently one of them.

11 Aug 2013 20:48:26
hi eds I just want to say I don't think we will sign any more players, i'm not really sure but I think we are up in our transfer deals, meaning we have made more money than we have spent, I know we have money to spend and this player who cardiff have just signed the midfielder what I've read of him I think he is a very good player with a lot of experience, imo I think lucas is too light weight because teams just walk through our midfield at will and he had a shocker against valengrena, again he was getting the ball taken off him and losing 50-50 balls plus he was so slow and not strong enough, but teams got through our midfield all last season and all of it can't be down to lucas, if we not in for medel I ask why not, we messed up last summers transfer dealings and I can see it being the same this transfer window, medel was quite cheap so it shows there's players out there who we can do with to fill the places we need at cheap prices, I know we can't sign everyone but if we leave it too late then we will be without the players we need, it will show us the owners intent by who we buy from now till the end of the transfer window {Ed002's Note - The club is trying very hard to get two or three players in. I appreciate the pointlessness of me keep saying this.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So if Downing, Suarez & Skrtel are sold as expected. Only a left-back, centre-back and maybe a winger/forward will be signed? I am not sure Liverpool fans would be happy with that when the window shuts.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd be happy with a left back and a centre back.
I think we have goals to spare, it would just be preferable that we won't need them.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well Mickey b, I just want to say I think you are wrong and we will sign more players yet

Yilmaz hasn't played, so I take it was a complete waste of time from our scouts? or will they get information over there? thanks in advance {Ed002's Note - He stayed on the bench so there would be nothing to see. Sometimes that happens.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2013 20:24:25
Hi Ed's, any chance that an automatic notification email could be sent out once you pass a rumour or comment to be published on the sites? Obviously only to those who submit an email address.
Sometimes takes a while to get posted and then takes a while to find your post and any comments. {Ed002's Note - No, sorry, that is not viable. Everyone has been great for a week but my sharing what is happening with Yilmaz started off abuse again. As such there is no way I would want to advertise anything I say at all.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You could click on your own name and it shows all interaction, but you still have no way of knowing when lol

Agree0 Disagree0

Is it possible to say what is happening with Yilmaz please? I missed half of what was said due to it being took down. I only read that we were sending scouts to the game. thanks for your reply earlier as well much appreciated. {Ed002's Note - You have the crux of it - but the longer version: Before he left Trabzonspor for Galatasaray in the summer of 2012 Burak Yilmaz attracted interest from Sevilla, Spurs, Fulham, Dortmund, Beyer Leverkusen, Liverpool and Newcastle. Lazio and Lokomotiv Moscow spoke with the player in January after the clubs agreed that they would meet the asking price from Galatasaray - but that has now risen considerably with his performances in the latter half of the season, as Chelsea were recently informed. Atletico Madrid has dropped what interest they had but two clubs do remain in discussion with Galatasaray but he is not the preferred target for either club. As far as I am aware Liverpool has not approached Galatasaray about the player yet, but they were represented at the Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce game on August 11. Yilmaz, rather unfortunately, spent the evening on the bench.}

11 Aug 2013 20:17:10
Hi all, just wanted to raise a subject that I have never seen discussed on hear before and hope it will raise a few constructive comments.
The champions league used to be just for the champions of the respective countries, then extended to a number of clubs from each country with the amount from each country decided by some kind of UEFA equation that I don't even try to understand.
There are a number of clubs, especially in the early qualifying rounds that in my opinion are not even close to the standard of the top 8 English clubs ( The same probably applies to Germany, Spain, Italy etc )
For UEFA to have the best teams competing from the start there must surely be a better way of choosing which teams enter at the qualifying stage.
I would love to see teams like Spurs, Everton and yes, Liverpool, have the same chance that some lesser clubs do to try and qualify.
Most teams change a lot from the end of one season to the start of the next ( not always an improvement I admit ). But there must be some way of giving more clubs the chance to progress and not to be just held back because they happen to drop out of the top 4 in their country at the end of the previous season.
I know this just sounds like desperation from an old Liverpool fan trying to think of a way to get us in the UCL but is something I have thought about for many years (but even more so recently!).
Any good ideas Eds, anyone? {Ed002's Note - You are clutching at straws. If Liverpool wish to be in the Champions League they need to get in the (currently) top four and (maybe in a couple of years) top three. The ranking system is simple and Liverpool sit in 17th at the moment - by the end of the season they will be 19th or 20th in all probability. The way to improve it is to get back in to Europe.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thanks for the answer but i'm still not convinced. I do agree that I am clutching at straws though :-) {Ed002's Note - If anything the number for England will drop.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Should be for champions only. Rest can go into Europa League.

Agree0 Disagree0

It probably will drop with the current system. What I was really after though is, is there a better way it could be done? Maybe completely different to the current system?

Agree0 Disagree0

The Champions League was initially set up for the champions only. More teams = more matches (group stages & knockout rounds) = more money. Your idea would have those finishing 6th/7th in the top leagues knocking out champions of smaller leagues who already struggle to qualify, therefore increasing the gulf in class between the bigger and smaller leagues kind of like the barca/Madrid TV deals and Spain. This would be terrible for the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sean, I see what you mean but should UEFA's premier competition be used to finance the improvement of lesser leagues or should it be the best most competitive competition it possibly can be.
Maybe the billions raised every 4 years from the world cup by FIFA should be used to finance and improve lesser leagues and the UCL should be about quality? Just a thought. {Ed001's Note - god no, that would just mean the big clubs get richer at the expense of the little clubs. The UCL is crap because there are no shocks, no little clubs getting shock wins against big boys because they have had to fight through extra qualifying rounds already. The FA Cup is great because of the shocks, UEFA should learn from that and get rid of the ridiculous leagues.}

Agree0 Disagree0

You're talking about increasing the gap and instead of trying to level the playing field you would be giving the big leagues an even bigger advantage.

Take an example of the Irish league. An Irish club managing to qualify for the Europa League group stages stands to make enough money to pay for the next 2 full seasons so that they can stay professional and add players rather than sell players. This club stands a chance of improving rather than having to sell their best players to fund wages & running costs for the season. If they improve they could qualify again and then you have even more money left over to get better again. The cycle goes on and in theory this gives these clubs & their leagues a chance to improve without handouts like you are suggesting. Receving handouts wouldn't generate interest in the clubs like European games either so clubs wouldn't stand to gain as many fans as they would from playing Sporting Braga or whoever, etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just a quick one for the EDs if they got time?
How many posters on the lfc pages do you think are actualy lfc fans? Only reason I ask is how many doom & gloom posts there are. The season hasn't even kicked off yet & most of them seem to have thrown the towel in already. Now I don't visit other clubs rumours or banter pages but surley they not as demoralising as our current page? The majority are. It is just them being fickle.}

Panic stations panic stations may day may day team down team down. we lost a friendly!
Lets not make knee jerk reactions to the Celtic game. Yes we need to add a couple more players, the game helped highlight that so it was a good thing to lose to Celtic. We will go into the Stoke wary rather than over confident so let's support the team, the manager and look forward to an excellent season. One loss pre season. i'm happy with that. We will add further class to the team before the window closes

The Spurs stalking is all getting a bit silly. Who cares what they're up to? They've bought some good players, yes, but it would be wrong to asume they're all going to gel and play at their best in the PL. It takes time to blend in new players, and remember how lots of peole bemoaned the fact that we missed out on Sigurdsson and Dempsey? We've got a team getting used to a good system with some good situations starting to bloom; the Coutinho/Sturridge understanding (the Coutinho/anyone understanding come to think of it), Jordan Ibe looks the business, we're targetting a new left-back, Agger is staying, we're not rolling over for suarez but sticking to principles etc etc. There are lots of positives and some people on here would be a lot less miserable and tedious if they concentrated on these things instead.

Have to say, if spurs sign Alderweireld and Eriksen for £15m, I will feel extremely sick seeing as we spent a combined £35m on Allen and Downing, who don't actually seem to be footballers of any appreciable ability.
Anyone else feel the same?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No. Watch what you say about Allen, I think you may have to eat your words come the end of the month. BR is trying to get us to play a style of football that Allen is particularly good at.

Agree0 Disagree0

I will admit that I would have hoped we would bid on Alderweireld at least but Erikson I think has shot himself in the foot and not too keen on his attitude.

Downing and Allen were overpriced in my opinion but 1 was purchased pre BR and the other in priniple could be worth a lot more one day soon?
I am not Allens biggest fan but can see what BR saw in him and his style and maybe this season or next he will adopt a little and grow in the areas I think he needs to to be able to play that style but without all the flaws he has now

Agree0 Disagree0

Downing and Allen are both talented, maybe not showing it as much as they can, but still talented. Allen has to impress this season when he is called upon. Downing has had a lot of chances to shine, alas he hasn't reached his full potential, all in all a good squad player. We overpaid for Downing most def.

Would have been great to get the two players you mention. but eriksen ain't interested.

All this top 4 this year is rubbish in my opinion, with this current squad we will struggle again i'm afraid. The defence will be the area that will let us down we havn't recruited in this area and it shows. Everyone is going on about we have won 6 out of 7 pre season, I suggest we look at the oposition as the strongest team we played was yesterday and we got beat. We looked poor in defence yesterday not just in CD but all across back 4. Hey BR you told us we would be recruiting in the starting 11 so owners put your money where your mouth is and bring some quality to the team.
Sorry ed's need to get it off my chest.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would have liked (like everyone else) a couple of good first team signings and if they do not arrive then I wish BR had not of made that statement. However, I guess we may get 1 or 2? and if not sometimes with football its difficult to forsee how targets will go, even when you think you have a player almost sealed it can fall through

However, maybe BR should have not said anything {Ed002's Note - Putting aside what Rodgers said, they are trying real hard to get the players he wants in. The club will (hopefully) not sign players they don't want simply to satisfy the fans.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Eds, I was just making an observation he should probably not say these things as can only hurt him rather than say nothing on the matter other than being "hopeful of a couple of signing" perhaps, and this way it can't really hurt him in anyway

Don't get me wrong though and like I said in my message I do fully presume LFC and BR are trying really hard to get the players he wants, but doesn't always work out

Thanks for the amazing feedback you guys give, keep up the good work. {Ed002's Note - I don't know if Sakho would be interested or not. There was interest from Newcastle to take Downing on loan and there is interest from West Ham.}

Cissoko seems to have edged a step closer now and I'd be happy with his signing, as he can be better than Enrique, who although is defensively sound (at times), lacks the ability to play simple pass and move football. Mostly because he struggles to complete a 5 yard pass.

Now Agger seems likely to stay, surely Skrtel will leave. Personally I still want Papadopolous, despite the costs and risk. That said I would be happy with Sakho, although two sided centre halfs playing together may lack balance. In happy with Toure playing, but we need three top CB's with further support coming from Kelly/Wisdom.

What concerns me higher up the pitch is the imbalance in the side. I'm not going to try and sound like an expert, but it's clear that if Lucas missed his tackle (he doesn't patrol, he attacks), then we're often left exposed on the counter. Good sides punish this, especially when our full backs are caught high up the pitch. Agger although a good leader, interceptor and tackler is often turned easily when one of one and without a beast next to him we may struggle. Toure is no slouch, but we do need someone quicker, unless we look at two stronger holding players or a shift in formation.

The stronger base in midfield, will allow Coutinho to play at ten were he really excels, especially with Sturridge up top. I'd personally like to see Luis Alberto play left and Sterling right, as I feel they'll make the strongest contributions. However it's clear we're targetting a player for up top, with Downing and Assaidi soon to be out the door. I like Aspas and Borini, but see them as slightly down the pecking order at the minute, but it's a long season with lots of opportunities.

Suarez is a huge factor in all of this. I still think he'll leave to Madrid, but we desperately need to work on the defence and midfield before any talk of replacing him. Once he goes, let's hope his replacement has quality and for me experience. I'm unsure on Yilmaz, but he can certainly score goals.

Its a crucial few weeks for LFC, but I do trust the board and BR to get it right. All will be revealed in a few short weeks, but no matter what happens I'm pleased to have regular, competitive football back.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I love the post Papa G. I couldn't agree more.

Agree0 Disagree0

A very very crucial 3 weeks indeed Papa G! I would be happy with Yilmaz, Sakho/Papdapoulos and Cissokho. While I feel we have a good squad now, we need that extra little quality to push us on.

And ofcourse Suarez sold ASAP!

Hi all,
I just wanted to know everyone's opinion on where they honestly think Liverpool may finish this coming season.

As much as I hate to even suggest this I honestly believe this will be a worst season than any we have had in recent years and we have had some shockers lately.

I just don't see us competing with any of the usual top six this year and if I'm honest I don't even look at Liverpool as a top six team anymore.

We are mid table standard at best!

I will not doubt get hammered for my comments but we have not bought the players required to improve from last year and we will continue to create chances but drop points next year

Am I the only one who is concerned by the lack of quality signings?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Honestly? 8th.

Agree0 Disagree0

Probably 5th or 6th, with a bit of luck maybe a push for 4th. Can I ask why this surprises people?

There is a pretty clear statistical correlation between wage bill and league placement. We have the 5th highest wage bill (or used to- Spurs have got to be getting up there these days) so the logical conclusion would be 5th is about right.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'll offer my honest opinion.
With your current squad without Suarez, your league position will be worse than last year. And this is not a dig at Liverpool.

Agree0 Disagree0

8th. With current squad and base on Suarez sulking like Torres. Cannot see where any on the improvements to the first team are coming? Anyone we're linked to seem unlikely or going to Spurs.

8th. If Suarez sold and nothing decent is brought in. Which is looking like the way it is.

3rd. If we actually buy these supposed target for the first that Rodgers has publicly promised we're tirelessly working on (yawn).

Agree0 Disagree0

Some fan you are, I actually believe we will be in an improved position this season, and its not far fetched to think it either, i'd go with 5th

Agree0 Disagree0

Is the transferwindow shut? No its not, please wait untill after its closed before u start nagging on about "lack of signings"

Agree0 Disagree0

You won't be the only one worried about the signings. I don't understand why people can't c us getting top 4. We had the worst start last season for a hundred years and we were still only 4 wins off 4th and in this window we got aspas (better than downing) alberto (better than shelvy) mignolet (better than Reina on current form at least) so with just the squad players brought in we have improved the quality in depth and no doubt more players will arrive in the next 3 weeks. Add to that coutinho and sturrige from the start and even without chewy I can c us getting 4th or even 3rd this season. People need to stop with this mid table c/;p. thank you for sharing your opinion and this is mine.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm concerned that we are short in key positions like centre midfield, centre defence and in wide positions, I honestly do not believe that Wisdom is good enough at this moment in time to be counted as cover and Skrtl and Coates just aren't up to it.

Still not convinced by Allen, not an exceptional passer(anyone can pass sideways and backwards!), not a great attacking player, weak in the tackle and not physically strong, honestly feel that he was a waste of £15m considering we could of had Diame on a free! As for Downing, a winger who can't beat a full back, can't cross and can't finish, has no fight in him and is very one paced.
I hope we do get a couple more players in because as things stand we are well short of being able to compete with the top four.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the signings thus far are stable, but we need 2-4 more players. If we get the right guys, we can go 4th (with just a little luck too). However, if we don't get at least another quality CB, and a good offensive player, we will be 6th.

Drigan

Agree0 Disagree0

Will be interesting to see imo. I think 4th is going to be very difficult overall, it will require a lot of players to really up the consistency and way better finishing. I believe we need to be a little more aggressive in the final third, more ibe less downing, driving at the defenders. I also think we need to get someone to get into the 6 yard box, it's a joke atm that someone isn't there for the tap in.

Overall I think Man City and Chelsea are miles ahead of everyone else. Arsenal/Man U/Spurs and Us will be fighting it out for 3/4th place. Overall Man U and arsenal are the obvious favourites, with spurs with a good shot too.

Wouldn't go as far as mid table, but unless the team gels well it might be a repeat of last year.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we have the potential to be a top four team. It will depend on whether we can eradicate this infuriating trait of playing some brilliant football and then either losing or drawing. But I don't agree we are going backwards. We have a young team full of potential. But we still need three or four players who would get into the first team. And Rodgers said we are trying to get players for the team in so we will see. Something in the teams mentality has to change into a steely resistant attitude that says we will not lose. I'm actually looking forward to the season it may be a really good one.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 18:44:00
im just hoping the club r working on a couple of good signings there is not enough quality to compete with spurs and arsenal never mind the big 3 imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

No your not and if people comment on the lack of quality people throw a hissy fit and say we are not true supporters. We need quality signings or it's midtable mediocrity again as far as I'm concerned. I predict 6th for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

The squad is much better than last year.
We have a keeper who wants to be here. Defence already looks better with toure, Enrique will get pushed by a new LB, Kelly will be back, wisdom a year older and experienced. plus one more centre back to come in.
The midfield will have a fully fit Lucas, Allen. Henderson is getting better, coutinho might end up playing there as well. plus we have Alberto who looks promising.
The attackers have gone from suarez on his own flanked by 2 kids (sterling and suso) to sturridge, aspas, coutinho, borini, plus sterling is a year older and is looking good, ibe is also looking to make the step up as well.

To say the squad is weaker is just plain wrong.

When Suarez is sold we can use that money to buy a left winger and move coutinho central, or an attacking midfielder and keep coutinho left.
Cover for Lucas, cover/replacement for Enrique, another versatile striker, and another centre back.
That will improve the squad even further, if all that happens and the replacements are decent then I can see us being top 4. Or at least top 5.

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree. I think we'll finish better than last season. thwe potential ib our squad is something which other teams will underestimate befasue of. of a lack of expericne. we'll probably lose the odd game but I think a challennge for top four will be within our grasp but ji feel we''ll fall short by a few points at the end of the season if not champions league. still unsure about our attacking options but my main concern is our defence, we still seem weak against physical teams like stoke.

hopefully we'll be able to unlock teams like stoke through technique rather than sheer physicality.

Agree0 Disagree0

Funnily enough I quite fancy our chances, 4 of the teams that finished above us have had changes of management. I don't see moyes doing anything at utd, I don't see Martinez doing anything at Everton and I have a feeling mourinho won't hit the ground running this year. Arsenal I feel unless they add to the squad will be that much competition . Spurs and city will be up there and if we can play the sort of football we ended the season on I honestly think a top four finish is not out of the question. I also think Swansea are going to surprise a few people

Agree0 Disagree0

I see it this way. Liverpool's squad is stronger than the start of last season, no debate about that. Alberto stronger than Jonjo or Spearing, Kolo is an able replacement for Carra, Mignolet is a good keeper and let's be honest Pepe suffered a huge dip in form last 2 season's. Then add the options up front we didn't have last August, Coutinho, Aspas, Sturridge and a fit again Borini. Fair enough should Suarez stay we lose if for the first 6 games, but if I am honest for every great opportunity he creates I think he wastes 2 or 3. Those other players make up for his absense.

Then I look at other teams, Man City look stronger, Chelsea too. But Manchester United do not, and with Moyes at the helm that lack that extra 10% Fergie could have got out of his players. Arsenal also don't look stronger. Spurs do at the moment, but when they lose Bale that is a huge step backwards, he was single handedly responsible for at least 12 points last season.

That for me means I think we have a great chance at getting back into the top 4. BR claims he stay wants to bring in players, if we can sign a cover for Enrique, Lucas and a strong replacement for Skrtel who we expect to depart, then even allowing for injuries and suspension's we should have a squad more than capable of competing. Add to that the emergence of Ibe and Sterling with 1 season and a good rest under his belt, I don't understand the negativity.

ChrisE

Agree0 Disagree0

I think there is a realistic chance of top 4, as long as we get off to a strong start. If we can beat the big teams in our early games or even draw with them, then I think we'll stand a good chance of getting top 4.

We'll have to see what Arsenal do though, they've been rebuffed on two of their targets(Suarez and Higuain) and there isn't much out there to choose from now. Spurs have really strengthened and done good business, but the players they've bought have all come from weaker leagues and may take time to adapt, but then again, they could instantly click and maybe break into the top 3.

With so many changes this season and the ambition shown by the smaller teams, this campaign could be quite difficult.

My personal prediction is that the league will be incredibly tight all the way from 1st to around 14th. I also believe this year will have the lowest points haul in the premier league history for the league winner or close to it at least.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 19:04:36
If we get a good start and some early momentum, I say we will finish 4th. Maybe even third behind Chelsea and Man City depending on if Manchester United crumble and the 2 North London Clubs have blips.

We've seen how good we are when we're on top of our game, the main thing is consistancy.

Lastly, I think Aspas and Alberto will suprise a few people this season

Agree0 Disagree0

Honestly? No worse than 6th, but I won't be happy with it.

Agree0 Disagree0

9th or 10th

Agree0 Disagree0

If we can bring in defensive reinforcements and another defensive midfielder, we can certainly challenge for 4th. If you look at each team, Man City and Chelsea are almost a lock for 1 and 2. After watching Man U today, there's nothing that frightens me there, Arsenal and Tottenham are beatable. There is no reason we cannot challenge for top 4. I think the goals will come with or without Suarez. It was proven at the end of last year that we don't need Suarez to score. I like Aspas and Alberto. I'm more concerned with the back third. I like the Toure signing and Mignolet, in my opinion, is a step up from Reina. If we can get a stronger left back and someone to challenge Lucas, we will be in very good shape.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we can add Yilmaz, Sakho/Papa and Cissokho, definitely a very good chance of 4th.

Agree0 Disagree0

Newcastle with a squad nowhere near as good as ours almost got top 4 a couple of seasons ago. It was on for them going in to last 3/4 games which shows that with a good start and momentum top 4 IS possible. My honest opinion of where we will finish is 5th or 6th which would be limited progress but progress nonetheless. Much depends on LS and who comes in. Squads aren't confirmed yet and 1 or 2 players in and out can make a difference.

Agree0 Disagree0

Based on current squads/managers:

1) City
2) Chelsea
3) Spurs
4) Man Utd
5) Arsenal
6) Swansea
7) Liverpool.

I don't think we'll get near top 5, they are far better than us. It'll be a scrap with Swansea for 6/7th.

That's my honest objective opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lfc will be in top 3 at the expense of united arsenal if they don't sign anyone worthwhile and we don't either( not possible)

elsewise I see lfc at a pretty 6th(we don't sign anyone)

and pretty much even if we sign someone I don't see us above 5th. unless that some one is zlatan imbrahimovic
because by the league law of zlatan, u win the league if he plays for you.

I think one lb cover, one cb (if skrtel leaves) and maximum 2 attacking players(considering Saurez to leave and may be downing) to come this transfer window.
Ed, Do you think we leave it too late to complete the transfers as there is a chance some transfer can take more time?.
P.S I understand ed why my post in the morning didn't went through. Take a look at this type of wind up merchants also

11 Aug 2013 14:22:15
Hello fellow kopites,
Just wanted to know what do you feel of our transfer window so far?

Please don't take it in a negative way but I think its been very poor. Its not about the players brought in, as I reckon they are all looking pretty good, its just that I felt we needed atleast 4 more. The most problematic area for us last season was CB, LB and DM. We have rectified none. Was it really hard to improve our team?

I mean for CB- Papadopoulos, Sakho, toby alderweireld all available and pretty much an upgrade on Skrtel and Coates.
For DM- Javier Mascherano, Capoue, etc. available
For LB- atleast its looking like we are about to sign Cissokho.

Then on attack we just needed a quality winger to complete our attack. Was it so hard to find an upgrade on Downing?
Konoplyanka, Diego Costa, Bernard, Munian you can go on and on.
Most of these players wouldn't even have demanded CL footy.

Yes we brought in 4 players at the very start but since then then window has really been on a downward spin.
People may say stop moaning and support the team but look at our rivals they are pretty much getting away from us. Each year we finish outside top 4, the more harder it will become to break through in it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If i'm honest I was expecting a couple more starting 11 players as BR stated a few weeks ago. We need another quality CB I think its a bit early yet for wisdom or kelly as we saw yesterday.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey I totally agree

i like brendan as a manager.

but the signings he has made or not made. has made Liverpool football club very very weak. as of now we can be lucky to finish 8th.

so I am keeping my fingers crossed. 3 weeks will define if the club want to finish 4th or not

Agree0 Disagree0

I think yesterdays game highlighted were we are short. We lack quality at LB, CB, DM and attacking wide player. If we are to have the season we are all expecting we must strengthen these areas before the window closes.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 15:11:25
capoue will sign for spurs in the nxt couple of days

Agree0 Disagree0

This squad won't get top 4. Not a chance. We need 2/3 top class players and it doesn't look as if any are coming in. 7th at best

Agree0 Disagree0

Lucky to finish 8th, I am not having that . We wil be a top 6 team for sure, I reckon .

I think it is going to be a very exciting season this year, I can't wait for it to start .

Incidently what about the FA again organising pre season friendly a few days before the PL season begins .

Steven Gerrard will captain England 63 hours before the Stoke game - madness!

Agree0 Disagree0

Current squad if remains injury free and plays like the end of last season will finish 6th I reckon.
But if we add 2 quality attackers (Yilmaz & a winger possibly Konoplyanka), a top CB (either of Papa or Sakho), a LB (Cissokho) and a strong physical DM we will definately challenge for 3rd and 4th spot.
The best part is atleast 4 of the 5 signings can be funded by the sale of Suarez, Downing, Skrtel and Coates.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed. Not much chance of 4th with current squad. If we have any serious injuries to key players we'll battle to make top 10.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gerrard should have never played full time yesterday- not sure what BR was thinking there.

I see us as 5th or 6th with an outside chance at 4th. A well supported team (by us supporters) has a better chance at 4th I would think than a team who is being told they are not good enough for CL.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok guys you all need to take a chill pill here, first, if you think LFC signings this season have not been what you expected then have a thought for Arsenal and Manchester United fans, they've signed no one, secondly, we will only be playing one game a week so what's the point of signing a DM player when we have Lucas? Do you want him to sit on the bench? Do you want him to hand in a transfer request? And lastly we still have three weeks to go and money to spend, let's just see what happens but always remember WE WILL ONLY BE PLAYING ONE GAME A WEEK!! That means 14 players will be unhappy at not playing in any given week, especially in a world cup year :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Tobey. We will not just be playing one game a week unless you hope we exit both cups ASAP.
We should be looking at close to 50 games plus our players are international so will b involved like the ludicrous England pointless games just be the season start.
When have Lucas, Agger, Gerrard, Sturridge played that in one season?
Injures aside consider suspension too

Why is it whenever I watch Manchester United I hold no fear of them whatsoever? Havent been wary of a Utd team for years now, just don't get how this team won the league, apart from Fergie that is but even with him to win the league you would have thought that they would have something about themselves.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I cannot say the same sadly, watching Liverpool terrifies me ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

There better than us which all that matters.

Agree0 Disagree0

Momentum, in their squad they don't have a bunch of world-class players, they just have decent players that have good chemistry and work-ethic.

Hello Edds great site as always, as we are looking for a left back how comes Brendan hasn't made a cheeky bid for Baines. Surly he would be a great buy. Yes he comes from the rivals but he's a very decent left sided defender an matches what we need. Would also stop the mancs getting him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is this a serious post?

Agree0 Disagree0

The same reasons we don't go for Wayne Rooney. (Aside from wages)

Agree0 Disagree0

Baines and Wayne would be an improvement for our squad so why not make bids if they are for sale?

I live in Australia and had to watch the Celtic game on cable ia the US Espn channel. What struck me was the negativity of Steve Nicol as a commentator. Did not have a positive thing to say about the team or Rogers. Not sure what his beef is, but it was pretty poor!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Prob just mad that his idol KK got the boot.

Agree0 Disagree0

I noticed this last season Stevie Nicol

was having a little dig at Rodgers.

I don't think he liked the way Rodgers

was talking about changing the style

of football . as though Liverpool were

Big Al, always thought we got the wrong manager when BR signed .my preference was laudrup quality player and manager .never mind think they will be top 6/7 this year .

Honda and medel are.two excellent players in important areas, why not top ten, depends on form and confidence. I just wish we would be more astute with our signings. Aspas and toure will be two very.good players for us but I hope we address the need for more defenders and.a.top CM/forward. mo

Look, we weren't that bad against celtic but I think it's obvious to all of us we need that bit more quality to break down teams. We've hardly depleted our transfer funds at all this summer whilst spurs have been throwing money all over the place strengthening their team considerably.

If we're still aiming to get top 4 we need to start spending a bit more to slot another 2 or 3 players into that first team.

For me Eriksen is a must: no one wants him at the moment so why not just come in with a 15 million pound bid? There is no doubt he'd strengthen our team. A midfield of eriksen lucas and gerrard then push coutinho out wide. Eriksen could even switch with coutinho.

I don't know why we keep pondering over these transfers- Eriksen is available and would move to us, so where is our bid?

Disappointed with Brendan after such a promising start to the transfer window.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Omg eriksen does not want to come to lfc. have u not read what the eds have been saying. use the search function man.

Agree0 Disagree0

You come and go fans always complain about the manager not getting players YOU want, even if the club want the player there ain't much you can do if the player don't want to come to us, so unless you know the details stop blaming the club and manager and put your support behind them

Agree0 Disagree0

Why would he want to come he prob looks at the suarez situation and thinks errr no thanks.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don`t waste your time with these types of fans. They want who they want and if for some reason the manager isn`t interested or the player doesn`t like us, they blame him. I don`t know what type of fans some of us have become. We`ve lost one pre season game after winning 6 in a row and all the doom-mongers are out in force. We all supported Rafa, KK, Houllier and the like thru thick and thin BUT because its BR (who`s not as experienced) he gets criticized for the slightest thing he does. He`ll make his mistakes and that`s ok. Even the great ones have made mistakes. Let`s all support our team and manager and stop bitching because he doesn`t do things YOUR way.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Went to palace v derby last season and he was the best player on the pitch. He had a wide range of passing and can score quality goals he is really creative in the final third. Also at he's age to be playing over 30 games a season is maybe the best thing for him to develop. I think there will be a very long line of clubs ready to buy him if derby want to sell.

Agree0 Disagree0

Saw him a couple times last season and thought he was good then watched derbys game last week on sky and he was outstanding, I actually posted on here after watching that game last week that we should do what man u did with zaha and buy him and leave him at derby on loan for the season. glad to see the papers are finally catching up with me lol :)

Hi Eds and fellow Reds,
I suppose I'm asking this of Ed001 and Ed02 with their apparent expertise in football related legal and financial matters (sorry to any other Eds if my analysis of expertise is wrong on your part). ANYWAY. I just wanted to know why (given John Henry's latest comments about concern for a lack of contractual privacy in football) football clubs, players, their agents and representatives are not made to sign non-disclosure agreements when a contract is drawn up or extended? It seems fairly bizarre that a standard practise in all other aspects of business life is seemingly ignored when it comes to football. Just wondered if there was any reason for it or logic to it. {Ed002's Note - In the majority of cases there is no issue with contract and the detail of the explicit terms are not known. When clubs and players agree an extension to stop a player moving (as Liverpool did last year with Suarez) then people will look to seek out the terms that a club is effectively giving in to - and this is what happened with Suarez last year and it was discussed openly here at the time. In most cases it is of little significance whether such details are known or not. For some reason the Liverpool fans are looking for a conspiracy here - there isn't one.}

I didn't watch yesterdays game I'm on holiday however I was previously concerned about how we've been dominating the friendlys as the pace we've been playing at and the tests we have received have been low. In preseason you need to play teams that can beat you & make you run around abit which hasn't been the case. Especially with the football we play its far too easy to dominate the ball & not get a proper work out & I fear this is the reason for our poor starts to the campaign. I hope things are the opposite this year

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don`t really get your point, mate. I`ve played football at every level but the pros and the thing is that every team wants to dominate the ball if they are allowed to. We have dominated every opponent we`ve played (including Olympiakos who are a CL team). The fact that Celtic scored first and PARKED THE BUS the whole game made it difficult and that will happen once in a while. We were unlucky to lose to them but all in all, it was a good work out. and BTW, we had a poor start to last campaign because we had a new coach with a poor squad, period.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 11:56:45
Looking at the squad and I think we have a real strong young team. okay I feel we lack a steel midfielder because sometimes we do get bullied abit. like QPR, Oldham, Stoke and Celtic yesterday but our team is young, enthusiastic, energetic and technically strong.

I think Rafas young academy players are come through at such speed.

Cant see Suarez staying and if he goes I hope its to spain.
But you got to stay positive because if he stays then top 4 is a realistic target.

dont think we are good enough to challenge yet though.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don`t know about those analogies you just made (apart from Stoke). We have a young team that plays slick passing football. What we need is to be productive at the top end with all the possession we will have. and BTW if you think these players would have gotten the amount of experience they`re getting now if Rafa was in charge, u`re fooling urself.

Agree0 Disagree0

We do have quite a small team with the academy full of small wonderkids. A bit of steel and power in the team wouldn't go a miss.

I know it wasn't an ideal result yesterday, but let's have some positivity. we're still looking better than this time last year.

As for more signings. there's still time. keep the faith people. We're watching a player today who I would presume that we're going to be in for shortly. Also, if we sort this loan/permanent deal situation out regarding Cissokho then I'm sure Enrique will have to step up his game or lose out altogther

I know it's only paper talk but to sell Suarez to Spurs would actually be worse than selling to Arsenal. The only plus would be that we'd know they'd have 85+ million from d sale of bale so we could ask for about 60m but unfortunately if you added Suarez to the players they've already added to their team then we can kiss any chance of 4th goodbye.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

so I went to watch the game at the aviva yesterday
have to say I left very disapointed until sturridge came on we just didn't look like scoring . I know we did well in our previous games but the standard of teams we played has me thinking were we that good or were we playing average teams.celtic were in control in the first half .Ispas had a couple of chances but really light weight he seams to have trouble holding the ball up against big defenders .this worries me as we play a lone striker.countinho was absolutley class .borini never got on the pitch with sturrudge iaspas and suarez borini won't get a look in he is just not good enough.
I left the stadium very dissapointed not just with the result but with the standard of some of the players was really terrible ie downing enrique allen just looked so average.the worst part was I walked away feeling its not going to be better than last season I pray i'm wrong

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A lacklustre performance, hopefully due to all the air miles the team has clocked up. International break won't help either. I'm sure everything will be OK come next week end though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Isnt it crazy do we are looking at selling players like downing and skyrtel 1 week before the season starts and yet downing started yesterday if were selling him why play him one week before we kick of the season . we can not say we are putting him in the shop window he has been playing him all last season.we have not had are star signing this summer it has to be a striker .i like rodgers but enough with squad players we need to improve our first 11

Agree0 Disagree0

So not being in Europe is considered to be a blessing in disguise by some people and now we are saying that collecting air miles effects our prospects.

Based upon that logic I wish we could play every game at home

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't say Celtic where in control in the first half at all, we where camped inside their half for most of it! The only problem was it was just passed accross a high defensive line for half an hour with the occasional ball to the wingers, which was then played back, Celtic had a few breaks and scored from one, our problem was too much passing and not enough direct play . As usual

Agree0 Disagree0

Celtic controlled the first half? What game did you go to? They parked the bus most of the match and scored from one defensive mistake. We controlled the whole game, lion share of possession, and created many scoring opportunities. So we didn't finish one, it happens.

Agree0 Disagree0

The fear many people have is that Aspa's is too weak for the EPL was only amplified at yesterdays game, he seamed to easily muscled out and appeared ineffective.
As we know Stoke are no bunch of shrinking violets

Agree0 Disagree0

So because he`s had one bad game this pre-season, he`s weak. We will find out if u`re wrong or right but he`ll need time so support him instead of slating him because of one game.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its not how big/tall a player is. Suarez isn't a huge lad, but he is quite strong on the ball. Aspas looks weak, like Allen and Sterling. Ibe on the other hand shows strength as well as pace.

Playing a lot of crap teams in pre-season ain't good at all. If u want to improve then play against top teams and lose.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Losing every game in pre-season will do nothing for the players confidence.

Agree0 Disagree0

What an embarrassing post. Crap teams? Crap poster more like. You need to have some respect for the Scottish Champions, the Australian champions and the best players in Indonesia and Thailand

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2013 12:08:29
No disrespect, but u surely can't deny that those were all crap teams. Could have done better with teams like Everton, Swansea, Milan, Inter, Real, etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

You have to bear in mind that most of the times playing crap teams means taking the game lightly.
This year's pre season proved me one thing. We are starting to see every game seriously, unlike previous years.
This is the one good sign. The other good sign is crap teams or not crap teams 6 wins out of 7 with just 2 goals conceded is a major feat.

Agree0 Disagree0

Could be worse, look at Man U.
Only 40,000 at Rio's testimonial to see them lose 3-1 at home to Seville
Did they win any pre season games against even 'lesser' opposition?

Not bothered about the result, football is often about fine lines and when you have a marginal squad in terms of quality those sorts of results are inevitable and I believe it will ultimately hinder our push for 4th.

This can be remedied by the acqusition of some quality before the close of the window. It has been interesting to see our dealings in this window, mainly with the outs rather than ins. Fourteen players out so far, admittedly most of those were fringe players, but the first teamers that have departed or currently due to depart have undeniably weakened the squad if not the team aswell. No doubt we will be in a better financial position as a result but without replacing the lost quality we will struggle.

Without some serious work over the next 3 weeks by the LFC transfer team we will undoubtedly be mixing it with the likes of west brom and swansea again. I sincerely hope there are some surprises in store for us, Yilmaz looks exciting if we are serious about him, prefer him to costa tbh he is a more complete striker. Similarly if we lose Skrtel we need to replace him with real quality because as we have seen wisdom is not ready for the step up, illori is not the answer either.

Now Suarez, the club for me have been naive and a little too vocal, my mum always said actions speak louder than words. I would have preferred we went all out for our main targets (Mikitharyan, Costa et al) and then when they were in the bag sell the turncoat to the highest bidder whomever that may be. Alas we are in posture, counter posture, it makes us look foolish in my opinion. Now he has gone to his best mate cavani to put his two pence worth in knowing he does not have a leg to stand on legally. And when we eventually sell him on the final day of the season to real madrid or insert another club offering us 55m plus as we all know will happen people will be wondering why bother making those statements in the first place.

Its going to be a crucial few weeks, i'm just praying we have enough in the squad to make a good start against stoke and use it as a springboard to a good season.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree0

Most supporters see the importance of bringing in the quality sometime in the next 3 weeks. This also has been reiterated by the club and staff. Let them do there job and maintain a level of patience. The speculation of our league placement would be better served after the windows closed anyway.

And if the quality they seek does or doesn`t arrive for some reason, fans like me will still support the team while "other" fans will still moan.

Question: Is there any way back for Suarez if, as reported, the club are adamant he will not be sold this summer. Or has he burned his bridges.
Demanding an apology after forcing him to train with the reserves (quite correct imo) hardly motivates him for the upcoming season. But the question is would he be able to mend his relationship with the players? As far as the fans are concerned, whatever we may say now, once he starts scoring goals we would be behind him again. But I'm not sure the players would feel the same, remember the images of a sulking Torres!

DAILY MI$$OR. "edinson cavani slams lfc for going back on their word, he says everyone close to LS knew he had an agreement with lfc that he could leave if they did not qualify for the CL. LS gave everything to try and acheive CL qualification at lfc and lfc have totally disrespected him".theres no smoke without fire, you can't hold the guy hostage ffs, take the moral high ground and do the honourable thing before the name of lfc is totally in the gutter {Ed002's Note - Cavani is speaking on behalf of Suarez and saying what he has been asked to say - not for the first time this summer. Suarez used Martin Cacares to do the same last summer.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Alex don't be daft.
If we won't sell to Arsenal what makes you think we will let anyone else in the Premiership buy him

Agree0 Disagree0

I like the way LS is refusing to accept any responsibility in us failing to qualify for CL. Being banned for a lot of the season, may have contributed.
I can't wait until this poisonous slime bag is away from our Club.
Cavani can shut his mouth. Not ounce of integrity between the pair of them.
Signing for Monaco whose ground holds about ten people, for 'Footballing reasons.'
It is easy to understand any stigma non-football fans have of our 'professionals.' Pffffftt. {Ed002's Note - Cavani plays for PSG not Monaco Davey.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Then if Liverpool give in and sell the headline will be "Weak LFC cave in to player power" Saurez is wrong, Liverpool did not make an agreement, or nothing was written down. If the tables were turned and Suarez had promised something off the record, he would be denying it too. LFC have been handling this situation perfectly. Let him train on his own until he says sorry, its in his interest as its World Cup year. {Ed002's Note - I am sorry but that is a very naïve view.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh apologies ed. damn, takes the sting out of my rant doesn't it? That's what Google is for.

Agree0 Disagree0

I respectfully disagree, ed. Lfc is in a "damned if u do, damned if u don`t" scenario. The media will spin it how they like regardless of what happens. Therefore, the club has to show some steel and nerve and not bow to a player`s demands (especially one who has thrown the club, the fans and his own teammates under the bus). Lfc have show they will not stand for that. They should do what`s best for the club because the media will have their way anyway. IMO, objectivity does not exist with the media so one should not care what the media thinks all the time because they are there to sell papers, that`s their bottom line. Suarez will go eventually but ONLY when we say so and not when he says so. {Ed002's Note - I think your view of the media is rather warped, but regardless, nobody cares about any messages being supposedly sent out by Liverpool right now. For the sake of the club, they should stop discussing the matter in the public domain and expedite the sale of the player. At the moment, the media are feeding of the public comments of the owner and the manager - and they will continue to do so until things change.}

A tough defeat to a soft Celtic side but I do agree with the real AG that we have had a great pre-season but we do have to remember that allthough pre-season is good for confidence it is the start of the season that counts. On another point because it is so close to the start of the season we need to put Luis Suarez to the back of our minds and concentrate fully on the team, our reacent signings and the new signings to come. First time I've asked the Eds this but Rumours this morning that Mascherano might be looking back to Anfield as he might be subject to requirements at Barca, any truth in this? Allthough he is a great player I don't no if I want someone playing for us who refuses to wear the great shirt and basically spat on our fans, plus if we did sign him it would have to be for a low fee considering he is 29, any thoughts?

ED's I have been using this site for years however recently I have become deeply disturbed by a growing problem. However I think I have a solution!

Do you think you could set up a Liverpool Banter- Mental health page?

You could then in theory automatically route the anger management/Paranoid and delusional/or chronically deeply depressed people straight to this section. It means we (eds and posters) would no longer have to read their insane ranting! You could take on a new ED with the right training who could listen to their ravings and assess whether they will be a danger to the match going public or to themselves. The deeply depressed and negative like Harry scousser can then be sectioned for their own good. You would be providing a valuable service to the football community. As always thanks for the good work! {Ed002's Note - "Questions" is now "Other Posts" which is where the repeated posts and other nonsense is going.}

Players were clearly saving themselves for next weekend, so not bothered about defeat to Celtic. Largely dominated game.

Worry is the lack sharpness in final third. Same problems as last season. Other than Gerrard and Coutinho, our players seem to look confused when they get near the opposition area. A lot of poor decisions, hardly anyone near the six-yard box.

Wisdom is not ready for this level. And two things we already knew: the Enrique/Downing positions really need to be strengthened.

All in all, very good pre-season. Now really need to hit the ground running against Stoke.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mate I really don't get your post. Stop jumping on the media bandwagon and start calling things properly.

Wisdom looked great. We let in 1 goal and all defenders make mistakes.

Enrique and Downing. I am seriously sick of the slagging these two get. They are reliable and quality pro's. if you sell them you will soon be moaning about their replacement. Downing looked sharp yesterday and a major threat and Enrique had a great game.

In summary. It was a friendly. We lost. Were we totally out classed? Not at all we dominated and controlled the game and Celtic defended like Trojans and hit us on a break.

Maybe this may fire us up to put it right next week. You think?

Agree0 Disagree0

Enrique had a great game, really? In what parallel universe was this? And Downing did his usual, started well then faded when he'd decided he'd done enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

What are the players saving themselves for next weekend? Stag do?

Agree0 Disagree0

One preseason loss in 7. Won six in a row by dominating possession and scoring 17 goals with 2 conceded. If we win first 4 in a row in the league, nobody will care.

Enrique was very poor, Downing was ok.

Agree0 Disagree0

What "media bandwagon"?

We are struggling to find a buyer for even a measly 5 million for Downing. What does that tell you? That all the managers in world football are brainwashed by the media and don't have a clue?

WE DON'T PLAY WINGERS! 4, 3, 3!
It is about two triangles of flexible/inter changeable players.

Every pre-season we kid ourselves we have a team capable of competing and every season we are left dissapointed. Its time to stop kidding ourselves people, this team playing this type of football will once again struggle to beat teams at home. We may monopolise possesion but it is all too easy to defend against and we simply do not get enough numbers in the box or put the correct ball in when it matters. If anyone is honest playing this way we will do well to get 5th.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Might as well end it all now then my friend.

Take a chill man. At least with expectations so low things can only get better for you.

Agree0 Disagree0

Correct.

This type of football has been found out. Wenger has been failing to win anything with it for 8 years. The premiership managers know how to defend against it.

Before anyone screams "Barcelona" in a Freddie Mercury-like way, remember Barcelona have the luxury of Messi. No team with Messi in it will struggle to break defences down.

Take Messi out and it's a different story.

Spain don't have Messi. Look what they have achieved. Before you start talking about the confed cup, their players were clearly tired and didn't play well in any of their games but still reached the final

Agree0 Disagree0

Might as well not show up and pack it in for the season. Stupid post. Spurs got waxed 5-2 by Monaco last week. If that had happened to lfc, fans would be asking for BR`s head b4 the season even started. Calm down and support your team. Celtic are in the CL and are Scottish champs so they are no mugs (even if the fielded a weaker team).

Ed, do we still have a partnership or whatever it was with Lebrob James?
Cheers {Ed002's Note - He is a very minor investor in FSG; that is all.}

Not to be an alarmist on anything, I was watching BR's press thingy where he was talking about Suarez training on his own for the past few sessions and saying he will look at him when he returns from Uraguay. It struck me that he may go on 'strike', not return perhaps? Where would we stand if he did that? Can he do that?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He can do what he wants and he has pretty much. Though with it being the Brazilian year of the World Cup I think he will play at some point.

Agree0 Disagree0

Didnt Tevez do something similar and lose weeks and weeks of pay?

Agree0 Disagree0

He can go on strike.

But then he would be open to being fined 2 weeks wages (the maximum) every time he does it.

For it to be a legitimate strike he'd need the ballot backing of the PFA, which he won't get.

I don't think he'll down tools in a World Cup year, he needs match fitness.

Agree0 Disagree0

People do realise that Uruguay aren't guaranteed to qualify for the World Cup? At the moment they aren't even close.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nobody cares what he does. He has been dealt with by the club and will train on his own until BR sees it fit for him to return, period.

I think we all now have a good idea of who'll be the starters against Stoke on Sat. I just hope, like AlexYNWA pointed out, that Hendo is preferred to Allen, especially being a home game. Allen's finishing is circumspect at best and Hendo will add more as an attacking threat.

I also think Coutinho and Sturridge will link up well, both are very intelligent on and off the ball and seem to be developing a real understanding. Not since Gerrard/Torres have I seen a more exciting pairing in the making.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hendo looked poor when he came on . Our best football was in the 1st half when allen was playing . we def need 2 up front if sturidge is 2 start as he drops to far back

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said jcan. Can't wait for the big kick off now. You nailed it pretty much. Pre season is about trying things out and looking for a good starting 11. Great to see Strurridge back. Think he'll link up well with Aspas too.

I'll be like a kid again on Football Eve this Friday. Buzzing.

my take on the transfer and the team so far
1) ungrateful person will leave and we will get a AM instead of him. every match I have seen so far our Am get enough chances, that is the reason why BR wanted someone like HM.
2) we desperately need a LW - would love to get the Konoplianka and I think if we show intrest he might come or Costa is good to but 25mil is too much for him.
3) if downing leaves we need a RW as well and then the Ibe and sterling can provide cover for both the wings.
4) DM is the other position that should be sorted but I think we won't buy anyone for that and gerrard will provide cover and that might even prolong his career( like giggs)
5) CB we need a good good CB. According to me the most important position to be strenghen is CB, AM, LW. someone dominat in air.
6)we will get a LB to cover enrique and then next year it will be enrique and Johnson out of the door.
The team is playing good football just need few good player to slot in the team directly and we will complete for the top 4. Aspas will come good, may be borini will leave.
Few team will struggle but I don't want us to wait for others downfall instead of that let get better every day so when the time comes we will be ready to face anyone.
I totally belive in the way the club is going forward. they have a plan its a long term plan, it not the plan Anzii took, it the route Arsenal went borussia went and they are very successful club and probably the few clubs making money. What Br said perfectly sums up our beloved club that it based on humility respect and hard work and if someone like BR who is been with LFC for more than a year is ready to fight to preserve these few things why can we. I don't know any thing else except LFC and I have nor will support any one except LFC so I will stand by him and the club in every way possible to preserve those things.

Just watching LFCTV with Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan. Houghton speaks some sense. saying that Liverpool are a "global Club" and that the youngsters who played in front of 95,000 in Melbourne etc. can't fail to realise how big we are and what they need to aspire to.
Lump-in-the-throat time before today's friendly with the brilliant Celtic fans and, I dare say, mucho vino afterwards (I can't imagine too many hopped on the first flight back!)
A good work-out with the wrong result doesn't spell DISASTER by any means. in fact it means very little.
The quality of the opposition was far above what we've played pre-season and Celtic were fitter than us.
With some signings to come in and maybe a positive outcome in the Hannibal Suarez saga, I can see only good times ahead.
The four newbies have equipped themselves well and we've sold/loaned out players we won't miss at the moment.
We are currently addressing our "problem areas" and fans and management appear to agree on our priorities (a refreshing change).
We have (at the moment) some borderline "world-class" players and many potentially world-class players. in fact we have loads of potential!
I've bet a ton on us winning the League at 28-1 but I don't think I'll be troubling the bookies next May!
However, I do think we'll benefit from concentrating on domestic competition for a season.
Being in the Champions League can attract mercenaries (it's purely a shop-window for S.Americans, Africans etc.)
Let's carry on with assembling a decent, hard-working squad of footballers who really want to play for Liverpool . let's just get behind Brendan Rodgers and his staff!
ANFIELDPETE
(P.S. Lay off Harry Scousser. even though he can't spell he's clearly passionate and sometimes talks sense. Waro and Daveybootle are also clearly passionate. All the Irish lads talk good sense and Nevada is someone I always side with. Anfield Andy is annoying because his name is similar to mine but he comes up with some good points and look forward to reading posts from JAY, the midlands lad whose name escapes me (likes fishing) and loads of other regulars. all passionate in their differing views!

Hi eds and reds
Disappointing result today but all in all what a fantastic pre season it has been, I can't remember the last time we had a pre season like that, and people moan about quality of opposition but to be fair it is always poor just usually one more tougher game in there but majority are always poor standard but some how previously we have stil only got draws or defeats or narrow wins.
Think today showed that against a team like stoke we need to be up for it physically, I know today they were protecting themselves for the season but we really need to be on it from the start.
Personally if he is for enough would start Kelly right back with agger and toure and the Enrique or even Johnson left back. Think both full backs weren't great today and Johnson is poor physically and Kelly would add height
Also think it showed against this type of opposition I think hendo with gerrard and Lucas in much better than Allen just for his slightly better pace and work rate, one of the best engines at the club.
Think up front it needs to be coutinho sturridge (if fit) and then I am torn between aspas for his aggression and ability on the ball or someone like ibe or sterling for some good pace in the side.
Thanks

Brendan Rodgers really does make all the right noises. Personally, I want Suarez out the club. However, having said that, it's so nice just to see a whole management team and owners not being bullied by a player throwing a tantrum and demanding out the club at the first opportunity. No new contract, no reduced fee exit, just old-fashioned sulk and train by yourself until you apologise and respect the club. Respect in this manner is something that has been missing from our club for too long. Torres and Mascherano spring to mind as players who bullied their way out, and we let them. Suarez has no choice, if he stays, it's a world cup year, he'd probably go to Brazil anyway, but I can't see him sulking all year. If he goes, it's on our terms. Beautiful.

My only concern is should Suarez now be sold, it will look a little foolish considering just how many times we've said there's no way he's leaving!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree with you except that it will make us look foolish if we sell him. All I can say is don't believe every word the manager or the owner says, he will be sold but we will never say or should never say that we will sell him. we are not desperate to sell him other want to buy him and he desperate to leave.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think BR and the Owners will have a sh*ep storm from the fans if Suarez stays.

Just my personal opinion that we sell him. I wouldn't minded if he stayed but not after publicly saying he wants out. It's not a good look to keep him. He won't be the same or I should say watching him won't be the same.

before all this has gone on and he played he regularly lost possession and kept sulking. that was fine because he we knew he was committed and he was fighting for the team. now every time he does silly things like twisting 10 times to get past a player and ends up losing the ball the fans will get fed up, which will result in heavy criticism as well as creating more negative vibes from the media.

Clubs would sense that we need to sell him therefore we won't be in control which could affect his price.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you about the way the club our now taking tough stances rather than been bullied about by a player, but I think Henry coming out with his statement was to send a message to the likes of Arsenal and Real, if they want him, then they have to put a top bid in and quick

Agree0 Disagree0

That`s exactly what he signaled by his outburst. It was a two-point move. Suarez will rot by training on his own until he apologizes and shows commitment OR if a good bid comes, he can go. QED!

It's pre-season, relax people! BR already had a full year to implement his style of play and this pre-season, like any other was about getting back into fitness, maintaining intensity and trying to get back into the rhythm; and will be for the first few matches, except points are vital in competitive games of course.

We played 7 games in 6 countries and won 6, lost just once, scored 17 times with 9 different scorers and conceded just 2 goals! Now, that is pretty impressive in my opinion considering we gave opportunities to the whole squad, tried many different things and this all with a squad that many here believe isn't good enough. factor in the heat and humidity the players had to deal with very very early in pre-season, and it looks a good little feat IMO.

For those who are curious, compare this to the past 4 seasons where we played a combined 20 matches, won 6, lost 8 and drew 6, scored 28 and conceded 29 with only 4 clean sheets!

While I fully understand the situation at the beginning of pre-season might have been different for each of those seasons, my point is that this time around, we have done very well and that little shock of a defeat to Celtic would no harm to the players, who have so far frankly, hardly broken a sweat.

There were plenty of positives including Sturridge's inclusion, and more encouraging, how sharp he looked for his first 45 minutes this summer, Ibe, Coutinho and Aspas as well as Toure; all of whom have looked good while Kelly returns from injury!

With a favourable fixture list, if we can get off to a good start, I believe we could surprise a few people this season! So, let's look forward to next weekend! Come on you REDS!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Post of the day. Well said A.G

Agree0 Disagree0

Great post mate. I like your enthusiasm, as I feel the same way. We can really push on this season, on our day we are superb. A couple additions we will be fully involved. I like aspas, seems a confident lad. BR is putting together a well oiled machine. Sterling is kicking on nicely, Ibe looks great. Alberto looks classy, may turn out to be a real shrewd piece of business. I trust BR, I like him, you can tell he understands the magnitude of a club like Liverpool.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spot on AG, we've been exceptional this preseason. Compare us with the Mancs who are expected to contend for the title, we had much better results against basically the same calibre of opposition, and many people, fans included, don't think we'll even be challenging for the top 4.

The detractors will say preseason is nothing to go by. Well, in that case, there shouldn't be a fuss about yesterday's result then, should there?

Agree0 Disagree0

I hear you, mate. People also forget the club ended last season pretty well. Put all of that together and there is cause for optimism. However, until LFC has (for the first time in a long time) a positive start there will always be doubters.

Agree0 Disagree0

No one is denying the positives. People's complaints come from the fact we desperately need further additions and nothing seems to be happening on that front. All the experts, fans etc can see it but I can see it coming to the final day of the window and there will be a lot of hope then clouded by doom. We will not make the top four with the current squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good lad well said!

Someone said on here that celtic would be the real test as the previous opposition were not that good well.
