Wow injuries taking place and fast but we got players that are dying to prove what they can do, so even if they don't turn up we still will see how well they perform and I just think they will surprise some people how good they are. Its a time like this I hate that Suso has gone out on loan.

Shakhtar's front 5 of Fred, Texieria, Costa, Taison & Adriano look very good and fluent and are ripping Utd apart everytime they attack, i'm sure I've read that Douglas Costa is seeking a move in January if that's right then we should certainly consider him as he plays on the right side where were weak, he has bags of pace, skill and trickery and would strengthen our 1st team greatly, price wise i'm not sure but i'd think somewhere around the £15M - £20M mark.

Is anyone else watching the bayern city game wondering when our top teams fell so far behind? Don't get me wrong love the premier league by far the most entertaining but I remember a few years back when the EPL dominated the CL. We beat real 5-0 on aggregate and had two seasons (I think) where 3 of the 4 semi finalist where English teams. Don't think any of our teams are anywhere near bayern, barca, and real. If I remember correct bayern have beat city the last 4 times they played them and their favourites to win the title

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Haha may have posted that a wee bit too soon! In my defence at 2-0 down in 15 mins did anyone see then winning 3-2 and James Milner getting the motm and score the winning goal!

Agree0 Disagree0

Football is a funny old game, eh .

Agree0 Disagree0

Andddd then City go beat Bayern and your post is ruined

Agree0 Disagree0

Slightly embarrassing, considering they won.

Agree0 Disagree0

You were saying?

Agree0 Disagree0

So far behind its disgraceful
Teams representing England go out and beat the best team in the world who over two legs destroyed Barcelona 7-0
What are they implying about the state of football in our country- surely not suggesting it's 'good'
Because that's too awful a thing for this pessimistic country to hear

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair he admitted his mistakes but second half city done great

Agree0 Disagree0

In fairness I did post it too soon but still stand behind my general statement. Fair enough city won and praise to their time for putting on a great comeback. But if I gave you £100 and told you you can either bet it on bayern, real, or barca to win or any English team who would back an English team? Was a great come back from city but still our best teams are a far distance off the best in the world. Just find it weird considering a few years ago we had to best teams in the world and now I honestly wouldn't put any English team as top 3 in the world. City may have won the match but bayern finished top, are champions of Europe and IMO favourites to win it again this season

Agree0 Disagree0

City are only confidence and european experience behind real bayern and barca

and that win will do their confidence a world of good

i bet none of real barca psg or atletico, the four sides city can get next round will be looking forward to pulling city out of the hat

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't take too much away from this match. Clearly half of you weren't watching. Bayern RUINED city in the 1st half, it could have been 5-0 at half time. In the 2nd half Bayern just switched off completely. who can blame them, they were through 2-1 up, city had to score 3 goals to go top of table. If you think this match was a true representation of competition you are truly mistaken.

Everyone's got their wish (myself included) bout a midfield without Gerrard. It will be an experience to say the least. I imagine it will be the same back four with Allen Lucas coutinho our midfield 3. Moses sterling and Suarez. If rather Alberto got a start over Moses. Best way to about spurs would to be play deep and hit them on the counter with Allen joining in. Looking forward to it

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would rather he picked up the injury in January after we have strengthened our midfield, but I suppose it opens up an opportunity for other players to prove themselves. Hopefully we can grind out some good results from now till January.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Not my wish lad. I'm gutted

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not sure about this welcoming Steven Gerrard's injury, he deserves better from LFC supporters and it may just cost us big time over the next 4 games atleast .

Sitting deep against Spurs when they have such a fragile defense is a terrible idea. We tried the counter attacking stuff and it barely got us past Sunderland. I think we need to press them back, and force them to give the ball to their weakest players (Naughton, Kaboul and Walker). That way we can win the ball high up the pitch and punish their poor defence. If we sit deep though, as soon as we win the ball we will still have to penetrate their midfield. That is where we will struggle as they have the likes of Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro and Capoue who are all very solid and there will be no Gerrard to play a 70yard screamer out to the wingers. We need to get Coutinho in between their defence and their midfield so he can do the most damage and that won't happen if we sit deep. Walker is a full back who will not be beaten by a speed merchant. If you play Moses or Sterling there, he will simply beat them for pace, and reclaim the ball every time they knock it past him. However he is awful at tackling and positionally all over the place. Putting somebody tactically clever and skillful on him will cause him nightmares, therefore we should opt for Coutinho wide left, cutting in to support the attacks. Wide right, I agree that we should play Sterling as Naughton is very bad at defending against faster players despte being more disciplined than Walker. I would play Henderson in the number 10 position purely because without Vertonghen, Spurs defense will be very sloppy and it'll be easy to press them into conceding possession. Suarez and Henderson can offer that sort of pressing. If Henderson isn't fit to play, then Alberto should be given a chance as he is great at seeing gaps in defences and Totenhams will have plenty. If we sit back though, they will just come at us wave after wave and eventually we will make our usual 'once a game defensive error' and they will score a lucky goal and leave with a 1-0 win. Spurs are there for the taking, and the reason our away form has been so bad is because we don't go for the throat like we do at Anfield. If we seriously want to be considered for the top4/title, we need to be beating teams like Spurs home and away. They are very average this year, and have their best player missing in Vertonghen. Lucas and Allen are good enough at dictating the game to plau Spurs more direct midfield off the park. The wingbacks will probably be unchanged, but we need to bring Agger/Toure in for Skrtel so we can hold that high line. Tottenham have a couple of fast players and we need our defence to be able to drop faster than Skrtel is capable of. He sits deeper than the rest of the defence and that leaves gaps in behind because he plays people on side. As a pure defender, he is great. Positionally he is just awful. Like I said though, we should be attacking this Spurs team. They have no decent strikers, have barely scored from open play, are missing two of their first choice back 4 and have needed scraped results against Fulham, Crystal Palace and Sunderland! Do not fear them, for there is nobody to Bale them out this season.

While Hendo and Steve G out how about a formation of mid with Toure - Lucas - Allen. Toure played in mid for Arsenal. As ed001 stated earlier it will allow Lucas little bit freedom. ed001 what do you think about it. Do you think we need Toure or Alberto considering that upcoming matches are away against bigger teams

Ed - just a shot in the dark but do you think Ilori can be brought in to play in defensive midfield- he can pass the ball well, being a defender I am sure he is able to tackle and he is probably quite energetic because of his youth.
Worth a try whilst SG and JH are out?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I expect Ilori will move on loan in January.}

I have just seen Momo Sissoko at the job centre in Garston, he says he would jump at the chance to play at Tottenham at the weekend and, of course, he is available!

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Dec 2013 20:03:55
Best quote I ever heard about Momo:

"How was Sissoko's passing today?"
"Crunching."

Still late in the game, oppo starting to get a lot of the ball (as they've done a few times this season) and press us in. Could do worse than sub Allen or Gerrard and unleash a Momo rampage.

Echo reporting that four players are up for free transfer in January. Alonso, Toivonen, Ince, Menez? Eds any chance we may go for one or more of these?

I'd personally take any of them or even all of them which I know would not be possible. I say go for Toivonen and Menez as Alonso and Ince have had there time here. As they say NEVER GO BACK!.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - You have misunderstood something.}

10 Dec 2013 19:32:48
The article says their contracts are out in the summer, but we supposedly can agree a contract with them in Jan (although I don't think that applies to Ince since he's based in England. Or does that rule only apply to players in the same league?) for them to move in the summer.

To actually conclude the transfer in January, we'd probably need to pay a fee. That being said, I'd snap Madrid's hand off if we could get Alonso for a few million in Jan.

Agree0 Disagree0

Was it the African echo?

Agree0 Disagree0

They are up for pre-contract agreements, am I right Ed002?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Any player who has a contract expiring can speak with clubs from other leages in January.}

With Gerrard and Henderson now out, our midfield options include; Lucas, Allen and Alberto (who can play in midfield). Coutinho could also drop into midfield, but we'd miss him in the final third too often. I think a midfield 3 of Lucas holding, with Allen and Alberto just ahead would be great in terms of ball retention, but it does lack a bit of power. However, if we can defend with the ball (possession) and just press the opposition high up the pitch I think this Midfield could do it.

People put a lot of emphasis on the need for pace and power, but at the top level of football, positioning and awareness are far more important. All 3 of those midfielders have excellent tactical awareness and should more than hold their own against a limp Tottenham team and Cardiff at home. Hopefully Hendo can battle back for the Chelsea and City games as we'd miss his work rate there.

At least this really outlines our need for Midfield depth in January and we also may see a bit of Rossiter, even if he only gets a few minutes from the bench.

YNWAdam

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would play with 3 centre halves again with hopefully Agger being one of then and Lucas and Allen in front of them. Coutinho, Sterling and Luis up front. I can't see Alberto being an option. He is too slow.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we play with Lucas, Allen and Coutinho sitting in front of them then I would imagine that we'll see some lovely football. Very fast, sharp passing. Gerrard likes the spray the ball to the wings, this won't happen as much when he's not on the field as Allen and Lucas don't have that in their locker to the extent that Gerrard does.

If this midfield trio is a success, I can see Gerrard being phased out and used as a sub more often than not.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Dec 2013 19:29:37
I think it'll be nominally 433 with Lucas, Allen and Coutinho in midfield and, Sterling and Moses and Suarez. In practice, it'll probably shape up more like a 4231, with Allen and Lucas clearly sitting deeper than Coutinho.

I think Brendan's gone cold on the idea of 3 CBs, tbh. I also think that Flanno needs to be on his stronger side to be effective as a wing-back.

Just when I thought we might be getting the breaks. Now with 4 first team players out we will either get a spanking at Spurs (Please God, no) and against city and Chelsea OR our deputies will step up to the mark and make us PROUD! It can happen, I would like to see Aspas getting his act together (if given the chance) also Alberto to show what was all the fuss about when we were trying to sign him. I only wish BR had used these players more to get them acclimatized to EPL. I am worried yet excited. but more worried. Texiera also has been looking good.
BUT FELLOW REDS. Please don't lose heart if we lost games and dropped down the table as we can always climb up with our boys back and whoever BR brings in in January.
And Please BR, field a team that can have a go at these 'big' teams. As we have seen, the only time they have faltered is when teams are not afraid and have a go at them. and don't forget we have the most potent attacker in the PL, so please BR go for it, we are ALL behind you. YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Don't worry, we will beat Spurs, probably 1-0, with a deflected strike from one of our midfielders. Remember I told you so.

Time to Stand up and be counted!

Injuries are mounting Sturridge 4-8 weeks, Gerrard 4-6 weeks and now Henderson out 3-6 weeks, I know a lot of people have been slating Henderson but you can not fault his work rate and closing players down although his tactical awareness needs to improve he is still young and I hope will become a much better player.

Time to shine for Allen and Lucas, I for one have been hoping Allen and Lucas will get time together but I didn't want it with no experienced back up players available if it doesn't work out. SG will be missed in the coming Xmas period along with Sturridge we are missing 2 vital cogs from our starting 11.

We have several youth players that have been performing very well but are they ready to make the transition to the first team I guess the coming fixtures will tell. Sterlings confidence seems to be returning and his tactical understanding is certainly better than last season but we still need additions on both flanks especially to free up Countinho for the AM role.

Will Aspas get another chance? he is technically gifted and can keep hold of the ball, I would have hoped with Sturridge injured he would get more playing time and he can play on both wings.

I am not a fan of Moses and think Ibe would be better placed as an attacking winger than Moses, hopefully Alberto will get more playing time from what I have seen he seems very capable.

When we press teams we have looked outstanding unfortunately we do not maintain this for 90mins and with crucial players out for Dec we will struggle to stay in the top 4.

Their have been many names rumoured to be joining us in January if we make similar additions to the quality of last January I will be very happy,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Pain injections for a ankle hendo be fine

On a serious note we only have 4 center mids we play 3 two are injured so you can put coutinho center or alberto and play with 2 winger like we did at hull or give youth a chance or play 442 with aspas up top with suarez

Can't find anything on the Henderson injury. You have a source? Massive blow of true!

Agree0 Disagree0

Just a thought, what about teixeira on the left couts through the middle and alberto/sterling on the right, this maybe the time for him to finally break through?

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe on the bench and alberto to start

Agree0 Disagree0

Sadly welsh boy its on BBC gossip page and looks Legit. Really bad news if we lose all those players for 3 weeks or more

Alberto may slot in but not sure his lack of pace or work rate will be enough at the moment to keep the ship steady when we play attacking sides

Sturridge over exerted himself on England duty and it looks like the same is the case with Gerrard

Hi all ed's and Reds, to Ed02 who have Liverpool got an interest in for January because I'm sure we don't wait till the window opens before deciding who to go for? We must have an attacking mid a left back and possibly a striker? Hopefully you can explain. Thanks

Ed001, how do you think Coutinho is playing in that number 10 role?
I really like Coutinho and he has an eye for that final pass but I want him to face the opponents back four with the ball in control more often. He did alright in that matter v West Ham but do think he drops deep because of Suarez willingness to play in the hole? I just remember Alonso playing so many passes through the opponents midfield to Gerrard when he was playing there. Obv its more difficult to find that hole when they drop real deep vs us but just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Cheers as always

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - more of an issue is that he is mainly being used on the left, in my opinion.}

So from what is being said, henderson might be added to the injury list from the foul he got from Nolan. So somehow the gods have been angered by us and therefore injured Jose enrique, Sturbridge, Gerard and Henderson. It's up to the fringe players to come in and put in a good performance, if Hendo can't play I'm sure Rodgers will put In a midfield of Lucas, Allen and coutinho central with Moses/aspas/Alberto/sterling on either side of Suarez. Obviously we are good in defense, Rodgers might have to go with a back 3 again but I'm sure we can come away with 3 points. Our potential is there but I feel when important players get injured our mentality and moral may go down especially away at spurs. I feel as long as our defense is solid and midfield presses and keeps a good shape we will come away with 3 points.opinions?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think our defence is good at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

It would be hilarious if we played City, Tottenham and Chelsea away and got 9 points from it. We'd be title favourites then, surely?

However unlikely it may actually be, it's nice to dream once in a while ^_^ I think we'll get a maximum of 6 points, with Chelsea probably being the easiest of the 3. I genuinely can't see us beating City at home, I'd be ecstatic with a draw in all fairness. Tottenham I'm on the fence about, simply because we've not had a result there in a while, but they've not been overly good this year, so we'll see.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea the easiest?what planet are you on.we would be lucky to get anything from those 3 games

i couldn't believe nolan done that to henderson and him a Liverpool fan you could see jordan saying to him why it was just a bad malicious assault.I believed from fixtures where out in june that this was going to be a very important period and we were going to be needing r top players, however with gerrard and henderson sturridge out imo the mentality players coming in should have is, its their chance to be a first team player now and show the fans their value to the team, the likes of aspas should be chumping at the bit to get a chance and if he r any other player coming in isn't they r simply wasting their time at anfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

"we would be lucky to get anything from those 3 games"

I take it you don't make a living as a motivational coach?

We would be lucky to get a point from a team City hammered six past?

Or to get a point against a team that Stoke can beat?

We should expect 5 or 6 points from these three games.
