Looking at Chelsea, I really can't overstate how lucky we are to have defenders that can actually defend.

A left side of Alonso an Thiago Silva absolutely criminal from Lampard. West Brom CBs are tearing past them.

for me I don't see lampard lasting the season as manager
just another example of a former top player getting a top job because of who he is and not what he has actually achieved in the game coaching wise
lest not forget he actually failed at derby
whilst a manager like scott parker achieved.

And don't forget the left hand of havertz.

Lampard had ever get his ship together cos if not, he will be sacked one of these mornings after another pathetic performance.

To be absolutely fair to Lampard, I wonder how much input he had into the decision to spend £200m on forwards and sign defenders on "free" transfers?

That Sarr chap they got is highly rated, but he's going to need to be the next Laporte to sort that out.

Chelsea got a great team. Question will be will Lampard be given the time after spending so much this window. Every manager needs time.

SR to your point, I had and still have a feeling that these players were signed for Lampard BUT if indeed he is not the answer, the next manager will have a lot of top quality material to work with. Just a hunch.

Red Meister, Chelsea are a bit like us in the first half of 2017/ 18. Phenomenal attackers like Salah, Mane, Bobby (& Coutinho until he left) capable of racking up goals for fun, but the likes of Lovren, Klavan, Mignoletagoalin and Karius leaking them in at a similar rate the other end.

And tbh, I think I'd take 2017 vintage Karius, Lovren and Klavan ahead of Kepa, Zouma and Christensen.

They'll be potentially brilliant in individual games, maybe even runs lasting a month or two. But they can't win major honours with the defenders they have, and will probably end up 20 points off the top of the league. Just like we couldn't win things until we got Virgil and Alisson.

Whether Lampard stays or someone else comes in, they need to get quality at the back to match what's in attack. Maybe Sarr and Mendy will make a big difference, but it's a big ask for them to settle in and do it straight away.

I've been saying it non stop since lampard has been in charge that the amount of naivety he continues to show time after time regarding his defensive decisions is always going to hold Chelsea back. I said it all summer that the investment put into havertz and ziyech was going to be a waste of 100mil as long as they still defended like a relegation battling side. Imagine if that 100mil was used to buy a CB and top keeper. Would be far more effective than 2 more attackers. He's picked 2 full backs who attack high up and left out of position while are weak defensively even when facing the attack. Lampard then opts to play 2 slow immobile CBs to cover for his invisible FBs. Chilwell and the new GK can only improve but they're not going to be enough to fix that defence. Azpilicueta should be his go to man and their best defender, most versatile and also the only one with a voice at the back. He left him out against mane and salah which hurt them and again today his full backs all over the place. Rudiger being made available to leave while a 36 yr old Brazilian CB who's spent his career coasting through the weak French league with no stress was expected to suddenly be capable of making the step to English premier league when his legs are already gone to even consider keeping up with the pace. It's laughable how Chelsea have tried to improve on last season. The GK has been an issue for a whole year but 5 or 6 other signings were done first and Chelsea played their first 3 games without a new GK and now already 5 points off the pace. It's funny their 3 scorers who saved them today were the 3 young lads who came through the youth ranks and over the summer saw Werner, havertz and ziyech cost 150mil to apparently make Chelsea great again. There's no identity there.

A group of young British talent who showed the desire to work their socks off and play together for the manager was being admired early on and the only positive to take from last year. He then adds 4 or 5 new faces all coming from European leagues and for big fees with no experience of English culture and that can't be the right way to build a squad with balance. Perfect example is thiago Silva making his debut alongside brand new teammates who he hardly knows and unable to even speak the same language as his defensive line or even his manager. I know he's proven as a great leader and captain for psg or Brazil but to expect him to organise a team he's never played with and players he doesn't even know personally shows how weak chelsea are in terms of leadership skills.

He'll be givdn time. He's Frank lampard. They love him.

I think he should've spent more time learning the trade tho.

The money Chelsea spent on Havertz should have gone to getting in a quality CB like Upamecano or Konate. They are too top heavy and rotating and keeping all their attacking players is going to be an issue for Lampard as the season goes on.
Their defense on the other hand is a complete shambles. Grandpa Silva is not going to fix those problems and the decision to send Sarr out on loan just looks ridiculous to me.
Chelsea's entire transfer window this summer has been opportunistic rather than strategic. They have signed all these players simply because no other clubs could afford them. There doesn't seem to be any real strategy on how to help these players gel or how to fit them all in an ideal formation.

I can remember a debate with eds25 over who was better Alonso or Robbo. Never a a debate eds25. How’s your nosebleed 😂.

{Ed025's Note - i think you have me mixed up with someone else ace, alonso is bloody awful and always has been, we are doing ok at the minute mate but the acid test will be the derby..

Does havertz play in Mason mounts position? If so it was a pointless signing. Mason will become z very good player.
