Reading a little article on line about Salah and the Olympics, wondered if any of the Ed's can clear something up for me? (this is in now way what I will think happen and wouldn't expect liverpool to try condone what I'm saying by the way) Can a player at any age "retire" from international football? Obvs I know Salah has had a lot of let's say difficult situations with his national team. I remember a year or so back Cameroon tried to call up Matip but he hadn't been in the fold for a while and for some reason said he was retired from international scene. If I remember correctly there was some sort of case to answer as Cameroon called him up but we/ he didn't want to go. Is this a thing a player can do or if you are actively playing for a club can your nation still expect you to turn up if called upon if you told them you have retired from the national team?

Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - It is a matter between the player and the country. In terms of Salah there has been an issue that has remained unresolved this year that has restricted his playing time. He can decide to retire and later come back. But it is not related to LFC.}

Surely there are loads of players who have retired from international football and you can do so whenever you want? Milner is.

My memory ain't great, but i'm sure it was said when Matip "retired" that there's nothing to stop National Team managers calling up people who have "retired", but it would be pretty unusual for them to try and do it if it's already established that they have "retired". I think the issue with Matip was that he announced his retirement after being called up (or something along those lines), but I could be making some or all of this up.

{Ed002's Note - If a player retires from his national side there is nothing to prevent him changing his mind and being avalable again.}
