What do we think of Virgil's Balon D'Or chances this year then?

If he goes on to win the Nations league as well as the Charity Shield and Super Cup (may be seen as nothing trophies but trophies nonetheless) then he must be in that top 3 surely?

I only see Messi as his competition personally. If Messi wins the Copa then he should get it.

What do we think? It'd be amazing to see a defender win in an era of Ronaldo and Messi, and a Liverpool player of course!

Seems silly that the Ballon d’Or should only go to someone who has won trophies. Trophies are won by teams not by individuals. Messi has had a great season, as has Virgil, but Lionel would probably shade it for me regardless of which cups he has won.

I think Virgil edges it for me, Messi is the goat but c'mon La liga and copa del crap, or the Champions League. Haha in fact i take I it back, it's not even close. No doubt Leo will win though and when he does congrats to him.

I remember in 2014 Manual Neuer won the treble with Bayern (also UCL) and won the World Cup with Germany + He was by a mile the best keeper in the world and has pretty much revolutionized Goalkeeping with his playing style

Messi + Ronaldo both had average seasons and didn't win any international trophies. Neuer finished third.

-> the Ballon D'Or is biased towards attackers/ Messi/ Ronaldo and van Dijk will not win it, unfortunately.

Also don't forget that the Balon D'Or is an award ceremony, and just like any other award ceremony, it is simply a marketing-stunt where the price goes to whichever contestant brings the most publicity/ money. Award ceremonies are rarely objective :)

If van Dijk manages to gain 170 million followers on instagram until January he will be in contention. Until then Messi and Ronaldo will continue to win it.

Its a silly award IMO as no two player on a team does the same work so it should be best attacker best midfielder and best defender plus goalie different areas should be awarded for being best at their position. It's a biased award regardless of how well you've played.
