Ok, I fully expect this to get a number of disagrees, but wanted to spark a discussion as the best teams in the past (including us) have always improved in every position if wanting to continue success.

We all know, from Ed002, that Salah's agent is trying to get him a move this year, ideally to Real Madrid, albeit their demands do not seem to have gone down well.

Let's say the agent succeeds. We now have confidence in Edwards that he will be able to secure an amazing price for him, if that's the case - personal view is £150m plus.

If that were to happen, would Mbappe be an option for us? According an article in the BBC Sport Gossip section (albeit reported via the Express 🙄) mentions that Mbappe is angling for a move. He would no doubt cost more than we could raise for Salah, but, Eds, is that even a possibility?

Also, fellow reds, would you see that as a step back or an upgrade on Salah?

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to break up a winning team, but if a player really wants to leave, the best we can do is to replace him in the best possible way - think Aldo for Rushie!

Don't Salah and Mbappe play the same position? If Mbappe is the Ronaldo replacement that is planned by Florentino Perez, then why would REal blow close to 150 million pounds on Salah just for one season? Makes no sense to me.
Imo, Salah will remain a LFC player for the foreseeable future and Real will sign Mbappe either this summer or next.

Zeddicus I get your thinking, but don't play into the agents hands.

No reason to sell Salah, massive monnies will not change that. Especially if Hazard is going there as well.

A side with Hazard and Salah on either side is mouth watering from a football fans point of view, but let's just wait and see.

Don't think Mbappe will ever play for Liverpool or ever in England.

First of all I think it was Rushie for Aldo for Rushie, I think 🤣.

It would be a disaster if we sold Salah. We would just continue the same pattern of the last 30 years, on the brink of something special and then sell 2/ 3 key players, and drop back down to 5th for another 5 seasons until we do it again.

I’d take that swap all day long. Salah’s amazing, Mbappe will be better.

Thanks for the replies all, and I take your point Irish, so in 2021 we should have both Salah and Mbappe in the team!

I think this post got held up in the system for a while as I actually typed it early yesterday, before further news came out that Mbappe was going to stay put in PSG for at least another year (and then probably go to Real) .

As I said, I hope we keep all of our first teamers and our more reliable backups in place, but was just a for instance.

In all seriousness tho. For me there is a certain level of player that Liverpool could never buy and I think Mbappe falls into that category.

{Ed025's Note - im with you irish, the klopp ethic is all about team spirit and working for each other, i dont think you need global superstars and even though he comes across as a nice guy they generally turn out to be arseholes in my experience mate..

Mohammed Salah is undoubtedly one of our most important players, no doubt. But let's not think for even for a moment that he is the "be-all" of the team or that he is not replaceable. Yes, it's a function of how much money you can spend to replace him, but he and his 25 goals and 10 or so assists (average) per season are certainly replaceable.

And let's not forget some of his history with us. He was Klopp's 4th choice. He was well known throughout Europe, and perhaps in the top 10 or 12 top wingers/ strikers. He came over. Klopp and staff shifted his style and positioning a bit, instructed him to go for goal as often as possible, setup the front 3 in the way they play, and he is now probably in the top 3 of European wingers/ strikers. Of course, his personal effort has been involved. But he walked into a system that suited him and the system has been tweeked to suit him also (two wingers who zoom into the center from the wings, a false 9 who plays further back than the conventional, and 2 fullbacks who rain in crosses from the wings)

So my point is that if Klopp has done it with Salah, it's certainly possible for him to do it again with another player with similar skills and abilities. In my opinion, Mbappe has a much greater upside potential than Salah, and is probably more talented too. I would take Mbappe and pay the difference, too. But keeping and holding on to Salah is more than good enough for the ambitions the club has.

This is all pie in the sky stuff, Mbappes next contract will be minimum 400k a week and he will cost £250-£300m. There are only about 2/ 3 teams in the world that could make it happen and we aren’t one of them.
On a side note I thought his whole more responsibility with PSG or another project might have been a warning that it’s him or Neymar there, if that’s the case then I would expect neymar to move back to Spain shortly.

I’m not trying to be facetious here Ed025 but which a/ hole world class players have you got experience of?
Kevin Keegan aside, who was and is not an a/ hole (met him recently and he was a gent like you said) .

{Ed025's Note - i had a cup of tea with KK many moons ago juicer and hes one of the nicest guys you could meet, im talking about the neymar,s pogba,s and ibrahimovic,s of this world mate and you could add messi and bale to that list as well, superstars who are egotistical maniac,s and despite being mega mega rich think they are above paying tax and treat other players and supporters with disdain, i dont know them personally of course but have read numerous accounts of their behavior towards others to know a shithouse when i see one..

The way I look at things these days is, no player is bigger than the club, no matter how good they are. If Salah is to move on this summer then I'd wish him the best of luck and hope for a decent replacement, would I want Mbappe? absolutely but I think we all know that'll never happen. I also don't believe Salah is going anywhere either, not this summer but I do think it'll come in time.

Mbappe is the better out of the two. I can never see him joining us or any English club but if we got rid of Salah, I'd want us to be going for players like him personally, we're at the top now with the elite, we need top class not mediocre players.

13.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 18:35:30
If Salah left, you'd have to change your name to Mane.

"He could never play for us. Let's be realistic and focus on the Begovics, Popes and Pickfords of this World". That was what was being said last summer about Alisson. And guess where he's playing now? "Oh he'll join ManC or Chelsea, they'll pay the wages he probably wants, we could never afford him". And that was what was said here about VVD, and we know what happened after that.

We paid a World record price for each of those players, at the time. I have no idea if we can afford Mbappe or not (i have no idea whatsoever of the financial picture of the club) . All I know is that we are not "bottom-of the barrel-scrapers" that some make us out to be.

21 May 2019 18:57:35
Sadly, I doubt Liverpool or any English club is high on the list of dream destinations for the very top players like Mbappe. Football these days is about more than just possible trophies, it’s about lifestyle and money and dreary old England just doesn’t match up to the sun and lifestyle of Barcelona or Madrid.

16.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 19:18:46
If he wants to go and puts in a transfer request then we sell him.
Don’t know who would replace him, a speed merchant of some description.

{Ed025's Note - usain bolt?...lewis hamilton?.. :)

21 May 2019 19:23:58
Ah good, my weekly chance to repeat (over and over) Salah is NOT leaving this summer!

JK_RED, you obviously haven't been to Cheshire (going by claims here a few days ago) 😂.

19.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 19:49:50
The one Liverpool player I think would really hurt if he left would be VVD. I think Salah has found his level here of being a 20-25 goal a season player, which is excellent. But, is that irreplaceable? And like ED025 said, Klopp has a certain character of player he wants, not necessarily the world's best in their position. Thankfully, we get both with Virg.

{Ed025's Note - i think you do burkey mate..

20.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 21:16:46
Salah has 56 league goals in 2 seasons. If he stays fit next year he will get min 25 league goals. There are only two other players in world football who could better or match this from the right are Messi and Mbappe.

I don't believe we have a chance on Mbappe do hope Salah stays as long as possible. In addition Mane would also be just about irreplaceable as well.

21.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 21:40:18
Very long thread with the wrong player being mentioned . substitute Salah for Moreno and replace Mbappe with Bale.

22.) 21 May 2019
21 May 2019 23:12:04
Football these days is about money, success and profile.

Money is king, the other 2 are much of a muchness.
By profile I mean ‘what the club can do to enhance your profile amongst your peers and through electronic media’.
These lads will be so rich when they retire aged 35 they can go and live anywhere they want. Football is still a short career. Success means that your name will live on after you die, you’ll always be one of the team that won . Like Djimi Traore - champions league winner or Bernard Diomede - World Cup winner.

23.) 22 May 2019
22 May 2019 08:47:38
VVD or alison leaving would be the worst players to lose Salah would be a loss but ultimately our team is more balanced to look for a replacement where in previous years we have still been building a squad and lost key players we have been building around.

24.) 22 May 2019
22 May 2019 10:41:08
I couldn't agree more berg.

25.) 22 May 2019
22 May 2019 12:36:41
I get your point Berg but who would get his 25 goals? Midfield don't score or create enough. Ox might get a few but very unlikely to get double figures. Firmino doesn't score enough and any new player that comes in would do well to play on the right and get 10-12 goals.

We would have to chance the formation and the way we play if we lost Salah, same goes for Mane both are irreplaceable.

26.) 22 May 2019
22 May 2019 14:13:39
Lets get LeBron James then! He scores and assists a lot each and every game! and he has very little share in our beloved club too!

Mark I'm saying we would be able to reinvest in salahs replacement in previous seasons we lost key players and spent the money buying 3 players to fill weak spots across the team I know we are not perfect but if Salah left for x amount we could reinvest in his replacement not need three or four players with that money plus if I am right Salah was klopp 3rd choice maybe his first or second options would be available now who knows but my opinion is if Salah wants to leave along as we get a good price I wish him well.
