Ed001
This has been one hell of a season. And it still isn't over. I wanted your opinion on what steps need to happen in order to take the next leap. I have full faith it will happen, but no clue what needs done. How do you improve a 97 point squad with a CL final four spot?
Thanks
Matt in FL
Ps Ed002 I would like your opinion as well so long as you won't get abuse.
Pps Ed025 Thank you for being a complete gent.

{Ed001's Note - keep the main core of the team and squad together and just add a couple more quality pieces. The team is young enough to improve.}

Sign Nicolas Pepe and it'll be fine.

We've done fantastically well and, in any other season, would've won the league at a romp. I think the quality of both ourselves and City has pushed both teams to keep on grinding out wins and make the race what it is. The league never lies, and whoever finishes top is there on merit - there is still one more game though, and stranger things have happened before.

So long as we do what Ed suggests, maintain the core and add a few quality additions, we will be fine.

Julian Brandt and Ryan Sessegnon are two signings which are needed to improve us, going further although unrealistic would be Wan Bissaka. Keep the front three, bring through Rhian Brewster into the fold and sell Sturridge, Origi, Lallana, Mignolet, Shaqiri, loanees such as Clyne and Grujic and we go again!

I’d like to see Adam Lewis promoted. A RB brought in to compete with Trent think it’ll help him go to the next level. Then Brandt would be a good option if the likes of lallana Sturridge etc leave.

Don’t think there’s a need for another 60-75mil signing like we had with VVD and Alisson. Think we will go back to trying to find the players that’ll turn into that level of player this summer unless Salah or Mane leave.

I wouldn't sell Origi, no chance.

The perfect summer for me would be bringing in Brandt, Wan Bissaka and Ndidi. This won't happen of course but it's a nice thought. It'll be interesting to see what business is done but I don't think there will be too much, too much isn't needed though.

We just need to continue what we are doing lads. Continuity was the reason we where so successful under Bill, Bob, Joe and Kenny. We have had a fantastic season so far one defeat in 37 games. Man City are a great side and they have used the 1nil to the Arsenal format to try and see them over the line. I am not giving up on Brighton making it difficult for them, who knows, it's a funny old game. Here's to next yr, we have a team that can compete with anyone, a few more quality players added to the squad and it's game on. We should not be judged on what City do. If you would of been told we would be on 94pts with a game to go, most of us would of said I wish. The boys have done fantastic, we should all be so proud. As for other fans cheering for City that shows you how good we are.

This has been the most enjoyable season ever for me. No matter if we get knocked out tomorrow and finish second (as hard as it is to say) . I’ve loved the ride and so proud of all the the team. Hold your head up high klopp and all the staff you’ve done a fantastic job.
Eds is right keep the core and it’s clear where we need to strengthen. Bring on next season!

Alonso1786. Sell Shaq and what spend 20+million on a player of. gis quality to sit on the bench. Shaq is a great option on our bench and needs to stay. he cost relatively little in today's market and is a important part of our squad.

I don't personally understand how we can ever match City, it's not like City will stay static either, I don't really believe we can surpass them, and they have great recruitment with unmatched funds to spend.

{Ed001's Note - they also have a core of older players who will be getting worse not better.}

Do you see David Silva leaving them this summer Ed mate? I seem to remember I think it was last summer he was due to leave and go back to spain but it didn't happen, I think losing him will be huge for them, how can you replace such a player? Fingers crossed he's on his way out. I love watching him, it's great to have him in the league but I don't want City to have him, he's getting on but still a very, very good player. I'd still have him at Liverpool given half a chance.

{Ed001's Note - his baby daughter is now not in immediate danger, which was the issue. However I don't think it will be long, he does want to return to Spain and Bernardo Silva was bought as his replacement.}

If you don’t improve then you’re going backwards so we have to do something to try and improve the squad.

Don’t expect anything like 97 points, I doubt we’ll get that.

I think we have to try and target trophies rather than points tallies. That would be an improvement.

True Ed, but they also have unlimited funds to buy whomever they want.

{Ed001's Note - they also are managed by Pep, whose teams have always got worse over the time he has been in charge. Which is why he has always left after 3 years because he says the players have had enough of him and can no longer do what he asks of them.}

Improvement is more than necessary BUT nothing radical and even Klopp has said not expect numerous big money signings. We have a core of 15 very good players, some of whom are bordering on world class (the front three for starters along with VVD and Allison) . What we need is to build out a squad with competitive alternatives, NOT back ups.

As Ed01 said, we need two quality signings in midfield and offensively (preferably a Brandt-type player who can play all attacking positions bar CF) and then get a reserve GK in to keep Allison fresh and hungry as well as competition at both FB positions. Also, we have Fab and Naby who will grow as well after a season under their belt. If we want to target trophies or the PL again next season, we're going to need to be able to put out more than competitive lineups out there to compete.

{Ed001's Note - I never said that.}

Sorry, Ed. I know you never said we needed two quality signings specifically in midfield and attack. I just added that in.

{Ed001's Note - ok.}

Salah, yes I would consider selling Origi for the sake of his career. He can go somewhere else and get first team football, plus keeping the front 3 and having someone like Brandt for the number 10 role but also providing an option of rotating with either Firmino, Mane or Salah. In regards to Ndidi, he is a very good player so can’t argue with you there but who would he replace? if you consider our midfield as it is.

Sessegnon would provide cover for Robertson because if he gets injured we have who? the gulf in quality drops and the thought of Moreno playing keeps me up at night. Sessegnon also would cover and rotate with Mane on the left hand side. Brewster would provide cover for Firmino as we introduce him into the first team set up and Salah can easily rotate with Mane if Sessegnon plays the other side also Brandt can play on the right hand side giving Salah a rest, this therefore ensures a lot of playing time for everyone.

Fruitba, Shaq is a good option from the bench and it can be argued both ways so I get your point. My rationale in suggesting it partly lays in points stated above but also the midfield spots would be well stacked if have Keita, Brandt, Ox, Henderson, Fabhino, Milner and Gini which is essentially seven players fighting for three places.
