Just watched the road to Istanbul cos I was impatient for the game and wanted some football on. Luis Garcia certainly had a knack of big goals! Baros was a strange one too, missed some absolute sitters early on!

I want to ask about Biscan, seemed to be in the team quite a bit, but I only really remember him as a bit part player. Was he any good? I don’t think I ever remember anything about him except tall!

Think I remember Biscan being on free kicks at one point? A bit Hamman-esque.

Haha. When Biscan joined, he was absolutely awful. I actually have biscan on the back of one one my Liverpool shirts from that time. I did it for a joke and ended up with the nickname "Benny Biscan".

He showed (albeit very rarely) that he had the talent, but very often he was just terrible.

It didn't help that he always came off the bench and hadn't bothered to brush his hair.

Because he was so bad, he became a bit of a cult hero whenever he did anything good.

I always had a soft spot for big Igor, I have idea why. I guess I believed there was a good player in there somewhere.

{Ed025's Note - maybe it was that he looked like sloth from the goonies irish?.. :)

I think Carra and henchoz got injured so he played cb for around ten games on the bounce. Certainly not the most talented but he wasn’t that bad either to be fair! Better than Traore.

Biscan was okay. didn't get the chances but i remember him playing well after a poor start to his career.

Biscan was a decent central midfielder. Could tackle, could pick a pass, positionally was okay, tried hard, but not anywhere near the level of our current center mids. He was able to hack the Premier League, but not quite good enough for a team around the top 4.

Houllier bought him in when he already had Hamann, McAllister, Murphy and Gerrard (albeit the latter two cropped up on the right a bit), and he basically never got a proper run in central midfield. If I remember correctly, he sometimes filled in for Hamann in the middle and other times was put on the right, where he was hopeless. He disappeared for a couple of season and then got back in the team at center back. He had a reasonable run there for a while, but then we played a team that were actually good (someone like Arsenal or Man U), he got destroyed and Houllier didn't use him again.

Rafa started bringing him off the bench as central midfielder (particularly after he realised Welsh and Diao weren't up to it), and he actually looked decent, and scored a good goal against Fulham. He also got a good few starts in in the Champions League when Gerrard or Alonso were unavailable, and played well against Deportivo, Leverkusen and Juventus. He became a bit of a cult hero for a bit, but with everyone fit he was 4th choice and Rafa let him leave.

He was poor, but I remember one European night when he played like a cross between Xabi and Iniesta, couldn't believe it.

I’m not ashamed to admit I had a man crush on Luis Garcia, he could misplace the simplest 5 yard pass then smack one in the top corner.

Zinedine Biscan, that's a blast from the past . Idontlooklikeklopp I think you may mean the game against La Coruna, from memory he played because Gerrard was injured and he did very well . to be fair to him, he was always played out of position . he did better when he moved on.

Quality player, 1% of the time. Loved him for some reason though.

If I remember, Biscans 2nd and 3rd games for us were against Arsenal and United, we beat Arsenal 4-0 and United 1-0.Biscan was instrumental in both playing centre mid, for some reason he very rarely played in that role again except if we were desperately short.
He came with a big reputation but sadly didn't fulfil it with us due to being played on the wing for most of his his time with us.
He did become a bit of a cult player for all the wrong reasons with our fans but I actually felt sorry for him, if he had played centre mid for us or another club in the prime of his career he would've become a much better player.

Believe he scored a worldy against Fulham in one game too. From afar he looked a bit like Hamann- didn't quite play like him tho. Still better than Cheyrou.

Igor Biscan was a cult hero because he was a actually quite an average player who occasionally did something so spectacularly good and out of character that you had to ask your mate if you had really seen what you thought you had seen. For me, his finest Liverpool performance was in the away leg of the 2005 CL Quarter Final against Juventus when Gerrard was missing. He was awesome that night against opponents including Del Piero, Ibrahimovic, Nedved, etc. but generally he was just average.
