Great read Ed001. France '98 was the first World Cup I was old enough to remember, couldn't believe at the time the ref deemed a tap on the back of the leg worthy of a red card, but the abuse Beckham received for years afterwards really was shocking.

{Ed001's Note - it was not just him as well, it was his family too. Sad that people think that it is ok to abuse anyone over a game.}

Good read cheers Ed. I was 13 at the time but I remember it well. I've never seen a media reaction like it. It was as if the country just needed someone to blame because heaven forbid England couldn't just lose a football match. As a Welshman it was actually nice to see him score that winning penalty against them in the next world cup. He's not a bad guy for a Manc.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. If you didn't live through it, I bet it is difficult to believe there could be a time when he was public enemy number 1.}

Despite being a united player, I think that free kick versus Greece was one of the best England goals of all time. Last minute, to send you country to the World Cup, not many players can do that.

Really interesting read that was Ed. Thank you. I must say, regardless of his lavish lifestyle and the fact that he was a manc, he has always struck me as a genuinely nice guy.

{Ed001's Note - cheers Kk.}

I remember this moment like it was yesterday. I think we some times forget that when these players make it as a top footballer there still kids really and we expect them to perfect all the time. I know when I was he's age I was makeing a right arse of myself never mind playing in a World Cup and all the pressure.

Being a Liverpool fan and welsh never really liked Beckham and always thought he was over rated as a player. But what he did at Madrid has to make you respect him. He was frozen out for so long and worked his way back into the team apparently by being the first one in to training and the last one to leave and performing so he could’nt be left out. Then to list the clubs he’s played for that's got to be a kids dream when they’re growing up (swap the **** for Liverpool) . He’s obviously a decent bloke with all his charity work to using his profile for good.
