Hi Ed001,

Hope you’re well today. What are your thoughts on Nesta at Milan, how good a player was he?

Also if Liverpool weren’t banned from Europe how would they have compared to that amazing Milan side?

Thanks

Crooky.

{Ed001's Note - I really rated Nesta, excellent defender at a time when defenders could defend, rather than just being midfielders playing deep. He would seem like some kind of colossus it today's game.

As for Liverpool, and any other English side for that matter of the late 80s, they would have carried on being highly competitive and winning it regularly. The ban from European competition allowed the rest of Europe to move back ahead and it took a long time to catch up. But that Dalglish side with Barnes and Beardsley would have stood out and been up there with the Cruyff dream team when people talk about European greats imo. And Everton would have been up there too, as that Kendall side was superb too.}

I have watched a few season reviews of when we got back in to Europe but we were very poor. I think you are right we really fell behind and it’s such a shame.

Thanks for coming back Ed, love your opinions 😀

Crooky.

I went to school with Howard Kendall’s daughter. She once drew a Liverbird ‘tattoo’ on my arm 😂.

Spot on Ed, re: Nesta. He was so elegant in the way he played that he made defending look easy. Was Lazio captain as a teenager and to me, played his best footie at AC Milan playing alongside the legendary Paolo Maldini. What a partnership that was in the early nowties.

IMO, Nesta was the last great CB from that era where defenders like Baresi, Maldini, Jurgen Kohler, Babbel, Thomas Helmer etc., did not even have to make a tackle. They knew what would happen before it happened and just snuffed it out. A brilliant footballer, indeed.
